http://www.asur.org.uk/ulthuan/viewtopic.php?t=21337 A nice collection of rumors and pictures. Go to the last post, there are links to Khael Vraneth's photobucket account- painted new figures, possibly from Gamesday LA?

Good stuff. Thanks for the link, Fellblade.
Unfortunately, I think all of this might be for not until we see some point values. But I'm sure everyone agrees that getting rid of Intrigue at Court was a good place to start.

Wow, why must my High Elves look so flim-flamming stupid this run? What are Alith Anar or Caradryan doing? Why would you ever stand like that? Ever, on or off the battlefield. And why are the horses anorexic? Are elven steeds skinnier than normal horses, and have pointy ears? That's the stupidest thing I've ever seen. Sigh.... Maybe I shouldn't be selling my old High Elves on eBay. Soon, nice looking elf models will be an endangered species.

I'm more curious as to how always strike first is supposed to be a balanced mechanic for an entire army.

Posted By AoD on 08/14/2007 8:03 AM I'm more curious as to how always strike first is supposed to be a balanced mechanic for an entire army. Well, perhaps they're defining always striking fist as going in initiative order against chargers. That does sound like a doozie against White Lions and Swordmasters though. Well, nothing some firepower can't take care of.

Well, nothing some firepower can't take care of. I'm skeptical of your statement. Always striking in initiative order is a very specific ruling, as is always strikes first, especially in the context of WHFB. I'd find it hard for a person with a rudimentary understanding of the game to confuse the two.

Looks like I'm gonna have to invent a new nickname for Wood Elves, because "Broken Elves" could now mean something else :|

I understand the difference between the two rules. I was hoping that, "perhaps," although the gamesday presenters may have told the audience that the High Elves will "always strike first," maybe the rule actually reads "always strikes in initative order" instead and someone made a mistake by saying "always strikes first." I suppose I'm hoping for a gamesday gaffe on the part of the presenter, but "always strikes first" would be a very serious change. Giving an entire entire army a rule that supercedes the most visible advantage of a basic game mechanic seems over the top.
Am I right that no one has seen the official text? If not, I'll happily eat the humble pie. The whole thing.

Giving an entire entire army a rule that supercedes the most visible advantage of a basic game mechanic seems over the top. It does sound like something GW would do though. They know Elves are broken and the only reason Wood Elves are succesful is because they mostly use monsters and not Elves, so they come up with a trump card special rule that makes High Elves ignore the most basic game mechanic (chargers strike first.) I'm still hoping that this new always strike first is simply a High Elf core infantry special rule, much like the improved longbows that the Glade Guard are using. It would promote ranked core infantry units just like the Glade Guard longbows and underpriced Orcs with choppas.

Does Always Striking First not interact with Striking First From a Charge to produce Initiative Order Combat or am I completely off track here?

Maybe, just maybe, it's a rule specific to high elven spearmen, much like the rule for charging pikes from the front allowed the pikemen to strike first.
In which case I'd say that's probably balanced as High Elf spears were over priced but such an addition I think would make them worth their points value. However, as an army wide rule? Oh lord no.

Actually my GW rep came to town and said that strike first was an army rule. And that their spears can fight in 3 ranks.
He's been fairly trustworthy in the past with rules, so take it as you will.

From the rumours I have heard, it interacts with striking first as IOC and applies to the whole army. Flank those units, they lose the strike first. It makes the High Elves unique to play against. An entirely different strategy. I look forward to it.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die. |

Too bad gw won't supposedly upgrade the current high elf core boxes (shelms, spears & archers), which have some issues imho. Hopefully they'll do that in not too far in the future, as with the chaos initial release and chaos warriors box with SoC... *shrug*
