I believe that is an Athern HO scale bridge kit right? Slightly more expensive than the cheap ATLAS kits, but nice!

Nice rivets...but I think you need
MOAR rivets

Thanks a bunch for the kind words guys, much appreciated!

@Bruticus - Afraid I couldn't tell you where the bridge is from - I got it for £3 off eBay from a gent who was cleaning out his garage. From the dust coating them when they turned up, I'd say they'd been in there for a while! Cheers for the tip - I've not done much playing with magnets, but I was thinking of trying some out for this project. Not sure I'll want a sump river flowing through the middle of every game...
And I am not going to discourage you from making more necro terrain - I can always use more inspiration! You can't quite cover an 8'x8' table yet, can you? True necromunda afficianados wouldn't stop until there was no room to move in the room you'd built it in

@LDD - Thanks a ton, man, much appreciated! Zombie posing is a lot of fun, and I maybe do some pantomiming to try out the poses when there's no one around

@nathanie - Thanks! The zombies are mostly flaggelant, catachan and cadian parts with a fair bit of GS to angle the bodies and slacken the limbs a little. I'll try and get a better shot and a parts list for you when i get home.

@Dave - Could well be, I've no idea! MOAR rivets?! Is that just revenge for everyone posting that all over your own threads? I'm running out of plasticard rod for the rivets at the mo - there's got to be about 30-40 on that scaffold structure alone! Quick trip to the FLGS around the corner will sort me out, I'm sure.

Loving the bridge so far Scarp, and the little 'dio' was very cool

Agree that magnets are the way forward, gives you plenty of flexibility with terrain.

Athern and Atlas hey Dave? Cheers, I'll look those up

A rotating bridge.....will have to make one myself. Im so glad there are so many great projects for necromunda going on dakka dakka right now, it's really gotten me back into the gaming craze.

I must admit its been too long since I've read the rule book and scenarios so I'll have to do moar research into the toll bridge, but your work is inspirational.

Really digging the sniper perch on top of the bridge.

I may be wrong, but...

The bottom one is the Atlas, the middle one is unknown, and the top one is Athern
..I THINK...
Don't be afraid to look into O scale (Lionel) either, rivets work in any scale

I scored a bunch of the bottom ones myself. Got to check out other local train shops. Found an o scale motorized gantry crane... But at $250 I can live without it.

@Cap'n R - Not at all, it's not exactly a requirement! And you may hopefully have a vested interested in that table improving in future

@Monkeytroll - Thanks a lot! Chuffed that you enjoyed it.

@Theophony - Thank you, that's really kind to say! Dakka has a fantastic necromunda scene, and most of my ideas tend to be amalgamations of other people's ones anyway The toll bridge isn't one of the RB scenarios - I think it was released in one of the magazines they did, not sure. Have you found yakromunda yet? Fantastic website and well worth a sign-up. They've got the community ed rules, and a free PDF download of pretty much every necro scenario or rule that's ever existed. Give it a look!

@Dave - The bridge bits say 'Tri-ang' in small letters on the side - I was just about to scrape them off, but I thought it might be useful info for you! I'm clueless about model trains - is that a company?

The following shot is for Nathanie - will do my best to go through what's in each one.

Spoiler:
From left to right
Zombie 1 - Dragon forge african american head carved to fit a FW cadian helmet; Body and legs from cadian command squad, some carving and GS for the angle; Arms are flagellant kit and cadian command with the angle adjusted
Zombie 2 - Pig iron legs; cadian torso and ?right arm; Cadian command left arm; catachan command head and flamer tanks
Zombie 3 - Empire free company legs with the angle changed; Half a flagellant torso; Flagellant right arm and cadian rifle; Catachan head; Probably flagellant left arm
Zombie 4 - Catachan arms, legs and torso with some reposing and GS; FW cadian backpack with some grey stuff backpack straps; Dragon forge african american head with GS mask
Zombie 5 - Nice and simple. FW chaos renegades trophy with catachan legs and a ton of GS
Zombie 6 - Empire free company legs with necron right foot; Cadian torso; Empire free company right arm with catachan hand; left arm Anvil industries bionic; Pig iron gas mask head.

Hope that helps - hopefully you can see that you can use basically any parts - it's all in the movement and angle of the head!

And finally, a few smaller walkways I've been putting together for my tin can towers:

Hope you like, and please let me know what you think!

@Theophony - It's an amazing resource, so handy to have everything there. It is indeed aluminium mesh - got some off eBay for a song.

@Shaso - It has indeed! They're a really fun part of the setting, and well... I just like zombies

@LDD - Well spotted, I missed that. It's a hand from one of the studio miniature multi part plastics, to be exact. Good eye if you got the rest though! You're a walking bits encyclopedia

@Nate - Hahaha, it was a typo mate, honest. Though Nathanie does have a certain ring to it... Looking forward to seeing what you do with your own zombies!

@Dave - Well found, that certainly looks like the bit, though I'm missing the struts and the cross braces. Still, £3 (maybe $5?), so I'm not complaining!

@Cap'n Roderick - Well thank you kindly, that's really good to hear! I did not know that you'd started a blog - give me a second to finish this up and I'll be all over it!

@Two Spartan - Thanks man! Glad you like it - The nest was a lot of fun to put together.

@Skalk - It was your use of railway bridges for your awesome hazard stripe bridge that got me to bid on the tresses in the first place! That is a massive compliment though, and I really appreciate it, thank you. Hope I can keep it going

@Vik - Hahaha, I think you may have said something similar when I posted the last batch! Thank you for the kind words.

Showed the start of this a little while ago, but I've been making more progress on the shanty housing and ruins. It's still very WiP (a lot to do on the floor, in particular), but this is as far as I'm getting tonight.
Hope you like!

Please let me know what you reckon - there will be a few more homely details around the shanty before I'm done

Reply time! Apologies for the delay...

@LDD - Orange indeed! It's actually cut from a clinical waste bag I took from a roll at work - I considered painting on a biohazard logo, but thought that might be a little overkill. Should break up the black ones a little, anyway. Cheers for the kind offer!
I'll try and get an updated shot of that building up when I've finished it in a day or two, including a shed shot.

@Skalk - Mate, what you've done is in no way derivative of mine. They're both bridges, yes, but that's hardly a trademark, and you've outclassed mine by several hundred degrees. I'll be commenting on your thread as soon as I've finished replying here, but that drawbridge with the pulleys is full on incredible. So no apologies required!

@Vik - Thanks a bunch! I was just thinking of the give-and-take you tend to get with real graffiti I'll get a shed shot soon, I promise!

@Dave - Thank you very much! I actually looked at what you'd done on your fantastic factory a few times while I was doing it, so stole some tips from the best

@RW - Good to see you man, you've been quiet a while! Hope you're doing well. Thanks a bunch for the kind words.

@Theo - Thanks very much! I'm working really hard on improving my skin tones, so I'm really chuffed you like em. Great (though lengthy!) video on painting caucasian skin here, incidentally.

@Vik (again ) - Hahaha, you can be forgiven, because it was a few pages back, but aye, Salute of the Jugger was a pretty big inspiration for the guy who designed the figures. It's a gent called Scurv over on Lead Adventure, if you're interested. Thanks for the compliment!

@Ruglud - You're very kind! I'm also drowning in all the Necromunda awesomeness on Dakka at the moment - wish I had a lot more time to comment on stuff that I do!

@LDD - Cheers man, much appreciated! Really glad you like the skin tones. There are two more teammates to come for these folks, but I'm taking a mini break to paint some other stuff before I get to them. Will get them finished soon though, I hope!

@Dave - Thanks a lot! I've been trying to stick to some vaguely similar colours so they look sort of coherent as a team. Hopefully it'll pan out for the last two as well.

And now for something completely different -
Josh the thug, first painted survivor from Zombicide

My wave 2 minis of season 1 arrived a few days ago, and I was starting to get intimidated by the big pile of unpainted stuff, so I thought I'd get to work! Hope you like, and please let me know what you reckon, as always

@Peter - Thanks so much Peter! My terrain painting is still in the 'early learning' phase, so I hope I can do it justice

@Dave - Oh no, good or bad?! So frustrating when that happens, especially if it was a long post. I'd love to hear what you had to say though, if you can bear to retype it...

@Dr H - Welcome, please ignore the mess It's always nice to have someone new aboard, and thank you for the kind words! Criticism is always welcome (it's half the reason for posting!), and yours is definitely a fair one. I was struggling for something to do with the flat black of the guns. I'll definitely need to head back and touch them up at some point, but by then I was getting sick of working on him. That's usually a good time to step back for me, or I rush and get sloppy. Thanks again for taking the time!

@Skalk - That's very kind! I was really proud of this gent, so I'm pleased that you like him. Took a little longer than some other figures I've painted recently, but I'm really trying to step up my game with layering!
Off to bed soon, but I'll see if I can hang round for your post - can't wait to see what you've done next.

@Theo - Much appreciated, thank you! Hopefully I can get a similar standard with some of the others. Ned is up next on my painting table, though I may finally paint up Coop first - the Jackals could use their last member back!

The hoody is a nice colour choice and stands out great against the jeans, you did a good job on the eyes as well although I do agree the guns are a little flat, but if you don't feel you are going to do it right best to leave it till later

@shasolenzabi - That's the one! Lots of inspiration in that movie. Thanks for the compliment.

@Dave - Thank you so much, I really the kind words. Really high praise! It's such a great sculpt, it really paints itself - the entire hoodie is pulled down by the weight of the pouch, so impressive for a 28mm mini.

@LDD - Thanks a bunch, LDD! Nice eye on the kicks too - I was trying to go for a complement to the orange, glad you noticed
The jeans are actually really simple, it's basically wash painting! Start from a white base. Do the skin through the tears first, then retouch any areas so the jeans are all white. Light, very controlled wash with asurmen blue (any pooling will totally ruin the effect), a couple of layers depending on how saturated you want the colour. Then touch up the tears and the highest folds with a teensy bit of white. Finally add some weathering powder dry for ground in dirt, spray varnish and you're done! Cheating, really

@Cpn R - Thanks for the kind words, mate, but I'm still not seeing those new pictures!

@Monkey - They build up quickly, don't they? Kickstarters are terrible for building massive piles of models. You're very kind!

Managed to drop a knife on my foot a few days ago(*facepalm*), didn't have time to go to A&E as no one could cover my ward, so it's now infected (*double facepalm*). On the plus side, I got the day off work today while the fluclox kicks in, and had some time to finish up this familiar gent. Still needs some basing, but I think I'm happy to call him done.

Couple of things didn't come out perfect, but I feel like he has a lot of personality. Here's his previous, happier incarnation for comparison:

Hopefully an improvement?! Would love to know your thoughts, as always, and cheers for reading!

First of are you not supposed to heal rather than harm ……. especially not yourself hope your feel better

Now down to the little feller lets say I feel his pain , it's amazing how much depression and pain that face has LOL

Even the stance is like he is dragging himself along, he has almost given up but just keeps going.

The paint job is great love all the little touches, see he has a nice new pair of Timberland boots there

Love the hat I think i have the same one the 5 o'clock shadow is well painted as well

That face is really well done. I feel depressed just looking at him, he has been painted up really nicely indeed.

He gives me the distinct impression that he is shambling along but won't hesitate to blast someone with that pistol, pretty much without hesitation anymore. Poor bugger.

@Scrazza - Thanks so much! And your first line was a very fancy way to say "he looks depressed"

@Shaso - Very kind, thank you! And the foot wasn't actually that sore - it was more of an "did that just happen?" moment than anything else!

@LDD - Those are some really kind words, thank you! And the harm was unintentional, rest assured. The torso is one of Victoria's Victorian torsos with some hack and slash / rebuilding around the collar area. Fun set - think I'll be getting my hands on some of the new resin ones soon!

@Vik - That made me laugh loads - I'm sure the kit on his back is just for morale building camp fires and toasting marshmallows. Thank you for the compliment!

@Peyma - Not too far off! Some fluff to come soon, actually - I want to get down what actually happened to Riff, but I'm struggling a little. Think it's been too long since I wrote something! Thanks very much for the kind words, mate, much appreciated.

@Dr H - Thank you! I'm trying to use some more muted tones all around, now that I'm trying to work in some layering and mixing my own colours. The day glo tones on some of my previous models were fairly unintentional

@Theo - Don't talk about 'oozing' until I've finished my antibiotics Thanks you for the kind words.

@Weety - Thanks a bunch for that offer, I'm really flattered! At the rate I currently work at though (it's been, what, a month since my last post?), it would probably be a year or two until you saw a return. And I can't keep giving myself stab wounds to facilitate extra modelling time! Have you tried your hand at much greenstuff work yourself? Would be sacrilege on some of those RT models, but I'd love to see what you could do!

@Neil - He's wearing the jumper just for you Really glad you like.

@Dave - Much appreciated, thank you! I will do my best.

Back at work today, as my foot fitted in a shoe again. So good news all round!

Also - anyone happen to know of a good spray matte varnish that WILL NOT FRIGGING FROST UP available in the UK? Just had to a fair bit of repair work on Mr. Coop (don't worry, he's fine!), and it's happened too many frigging times, so my Krylon matte finish is going out the window. I'd love any top tips!

He looks great, very nicely painted face especially and that model has a great expression.

I don't know about a primer except that the GW satin one is not really very noticeably shiny. I don't usually bother varnishing though. Or when I do, I paint it on or spray it though an airbrush as I haven't seen matte sprays in the UK either.

I use hi-cote matt acrylic car primer spray from the local hardware store - I don't know what they think I do with all that car primer! Anyway having tried army painter and GW spray I'm convinced that the cheap car spray is the best.

Don't worry scarper I won't mutilate any antiques - I will get some plastic kits like what you use!

I'd suggest using Anthony Case's Attack Pets.pdf rather than the other dog rules - in which case you can buy a hound right away. I'd also suggest adding a house rule - you can always choose not to shoot at a pet even if it is the nearest target. Otherwise pets can be quite annoying to play against.

Thank you so much for all the kind words, guys, they are all really, really appreciated.

@Bruticus - I think I've seen those rules before, but not for a while. Will have to dig them out again - thanks again for the tip.

@LDD - I have indeed, and they are beautiful! Maybe a little high tech for Caitiff though

@Castiel - Mate, I would absolutely love to head back to the ELG, but now that I'm working, my hours just won't allow it. Are you posting reports and that up anywhere? I'd love to watch from the sidelines anyway!

@Neil - LONG overdue. I'll have to get back in gear! I'll have to see what I can do over the next couple of days.

Again, thank you for all the comments - you're all very kind!

Managed to get a game in with Cpn Roderick over the weekend (thanks again if you're reading, man - it was a lot of fun!), which let the Jackals see their first fully painted outing. It went fairly well, with Twitch taking the opposing gang leader out of action with an incredibly lucky shot and Skragg rolling a statistically ridiculous number of 6s, but was pretty close fought all the way through.
After the game, though, I purchased a mutt from the local traders, and a new juve ganger was kicked out of one of the settlements.

So two new models to paint already! This is Ivy, and the mutt with her is Fluke. They have a little backstory to come (hopefully by Weds!).

As you can see, she's pretty tiny.

Hope you guys like them - I'm really looking forward to painting them up! I've got a few character touches in mind for Ivy, and I reckon they'll be a lot of fun. As ever, I'd love to know what you think - any comments and criticism are much appreciated!

Great. I really like it when juves look like juves, it's difficult to do using say, GW plastic kits and they grow up so fast that they tend to get forgotten about. But I think it adds a lot to the flavour when there are teenagers running around cluelessly.

Yes - it is a game about gangs so you really need the teenage contingent for authenticity. And its fun to have some cannon fodder.

She looks cool - is that a sawn-off double barrel?

Thank you so much for all the kind words everyone - you're all far too nice, and you're in danger of giving me an ego It is much appreciated nonetheless!

I do really enjoy what juves add in terms of flavour, even if the ruleset basically supports using them as walking meatshields. So much more fun when you have a tough ganger who limped their way up from juve, riddled with bullets and full of personality.

Bit of a change of tack (briefly), but I finished basing all the zombicide figures I've painted so far, and I thought I'd show them off here. Really fun to work on with leftover green stuff from other projects, or quick things to pain between more detailed works. They're all quite speed painted and you've seen some before, but here are the groups I've been working towards so far. They'll all grow in size - I'm hoping to eventually be able to do a themed set of zombies for various areas and scenarios

Hospital

Office / business

Casual dress / non-specific

Retail

Military

Road / Construction

The smaller groups will obvs get more members in time. Hope you like them!

@Capn R - You'll have the fangs of Fluke to get past first
Can't wait to see some more of your gang with paint on - update your blog!

@LDD - You're absolutely right, that would improve them loads, but at the mo I'm just trying to power through them all - there's about 100 in the box, and I've got a fair few more coming with the next kickstarter

I've just been off to Venice with Hannah on my first annual leave in a fair few months, and it is an absolutely beautiful place. Seawater and tourism also does stunning things to stone and paintwork, and as is becoming a bit of a habit, couldn't resist taking a few reference pics to share! Hope they're useful for someone - I'm definitely saving them for when I get around to terrain work.

p.s. I have a ton of normal person vacation pics too, it's not all close ups of peeling paint, honest! Just thought you may not be quite so interested in ones like this
Spoiler:

(That beer cost 8 fecking euros!)

Also did this when I got back - was having a lot of trouble fitting Ivy with the colour scheme for the rest of the Jackals for some reason.

I'm hoping to try out a fair few new techniques! Plan is to experiment with blending pink into white for fluke, like this chappy here:
Spoiler:

And Ivy herself will be getting some paleskin and sunburn, possibly with marks spared by her goggles

Thanks a bunch for all the comments!

@Bruticus - Thank you! The girl's body is a female scavenger model from a system in development called Scavenge Skirmish Survive. The sculpts are a little ropey in places (I had to resculpt her left hand, for example, and there are a few thumb prints here and there), but they are interesting and fun. The head is from Statuesque Miniatures resistance line. The dog is from the Convoi starter set from the Eden game system.

@LDD - Very kind, thank you! Though I wouldn't have called my original half-arsed colour plan 'art work' Good eye once again for the Statuesque head!

@Weety - Thank you very much! I don't think you've seen this particular mutt before, but I did put up a picture of a similar hound to steal the colour scheme from, so maybe youre thinking of that

@Dr. H - Thanks a lot! I sometimes worry that I use too many earth tones, but you can get some fun effects with a little variation in shade.

@Peyma - Thanks, man, much appreciated. Did you have any more luck with the eBay scores? Would be great if we had two bases to play over... And they were definitely cheating. How else would you explain three gangers being torn to pieces by the same dog and then my team running away?!

A few simple new things:

A speedy paintjob on an unfortunate gentleman who will be playing a role in an upcoming scenario

And some finished greenwork for a bounty hunter who has entered the fray.

Hope you like, and an update on gang status soon.

I think the unfortunate gentleman (or Saturday night guy ) looks pretty cool although a little fetish Scenario hey

I to stick to the earthy tones myself but I found a cool way to get around this , just add one bright colour to the mix it is quite amazing the difference it makes but still keeps the same earth tone you love.

The Bounty hunter is a cool looking miniature love the use of parts, ok here goes Vostroyan sniper body, Vic miniatures shotgun trenchers arms and Vic resin head Penal legion I think.

The only thing stumping me is that grey weapon, not sure if it is the Elysian rifle or something completely different

Great job though all looks great mate

Yeah, on top of it this guy is the ing MAN. due to his cunningly concealed flamer, he's snookered me a couple of times now. And he's just always so laissez-faire about everything, like 'ah, well, another gak day, might as well win hard at life in the underhive, meh'

total beast.

And Scarp probably wouldn't like to admit this, but he's actually got the most wins in our campaign... I might have a gang rating over 2K, but he's got the most victories. In fact, the only time he lost to me was when it was the Jackals AND the Red Hands trying to sandwich me (joint rescue mission) and the Red Hands were about as good at stealth as a battalion of redcoats in a knocking shop...

@PDH - Thanks a lot! It's the head that does it really - great sculpt that oozes menace

@Vik - He does indeed and it certainly is. His captors obviously don't play nice. Thanks for the kind words!

@LDD - Cheers, that's very kind! The fetishy bit didn't even occur to me, but to each their own I guess The bolter substitute is an elysian lasgun (one of the bullpup type ones) with a couple of modifications. I really like the design of the original!

@Baiyuan - Not at all, that's really nice of you! Means a lot. Would love to see some more of your stuff soon too - I could use the inspiration!

@LeadLegion - Welcome! Hope you find something else you like.

@Weety - Thank you!

@Igandris - Cheers! See where you're coming from with the bag - will have to do something about that.

@Roddy - He's looking pretty scary now too with T4 and W2! I'll try and get the bounty hunter painted up, but 2 new juves and a plasma heavy on the work bench at the moment. Those settlements are really pumping them out!

@Migs - Thank you very much! Glad you like him.

@Scrazza - Glad you like! It's mostly the pose on the original, I just made some small changes

Couple of painted cargo containers for today. I've been playing with weathering powders, which I've never really used before. Steep learning curve, and I think I overdid it a bit in places, but they're fun to work with!

Hope you like, and more as I work on it.

p.s. I can't find the original plaster ones I got off eBay anymore, but there's a gent here selling what look like exactly the same casts in resin for a really good price.

They're really versaltile and totally worth a look for a skirmish-style board.

Thanks very much for the kind words guys! I do really enjoy working with blue and orange - it's probably going to come up a lot in my terrain

@Neil - I bought those stands a few days ago because I basically had no space left to paint in - I doubt it'll stay that neat for long

New girl today - plasma gunner to replace Skragg as the gang heavy, as he's currently doing time in Cpn R.'s mines. Breakouts will happen some day though!

I'm a little disappointed in the photos for this lady, just can't seem to get ones that look right. Hopefully the paintjob will fix that.

Her name is Moss, and she's already paid for her plasma rifle in wounds put down on the Red Hands

Not the greatest pics, but her backpack has a spool of cable hanging from it. She's an electrician by trade, and has some limited experience with the hive tech surrounding Roth.

Original model is one of the hasslefree modern soldiers here.

Hope you like her, and as always, please let me know what you think!

That is what I love about what you do those real life aspects, the casual hats jumpers jackets then combined with the grisly look heads just brilliant.

The juves bionic arm is a great addition not over complicated simple design works great in the setting, the seconds juve waistcoat is a nice touch makes her look more ready for an Apoc setting great work once again.

Hmmm... that 'back in the fold' update didn't last too long, did it?

@Weety - They're a great line. The jacket was supposed to be flak armour, intentionally a little too big for her. Could work for both I suppose, though! The spear-weilding chap was originally going to be called Tjader, but Viggo has kind of stuck

@PDH - Thanks Peter, really glad you like them! I was looking at Copplestone's scavenger line and admiring all the useless junk they carry with them, made me want to try a few more character touches on my own folks. Don't get me started on Mr. Hunt...

@Dave - Much appreciated, mate, that's really kind.

@Skalk - Thank you! I think It might be Fink (the lass in the flak jacket) first on the painting table, but we'll see how things go. Might need to knock together some more terrain before then!

@Monkeytroll - Good to see you around again! Thanks for the compliment. Viggo's head is one of the resin ones from Victoria Lamb's penal legion line.

@Sageheart - Thanks!

@Neil - Thank you very much! Really glad you like them. And I keep having to make new juves because my two settlements keep spitting them out! That and Peyma's Red Hand Bastards keep wounding all the grown ups...

@LDD - Thanks a bunch for the kind words! The bionic arm was a lot of fun to do - I was looking at the simpler things I've found in sci-fi films for some inspiration

Today's update is my entry for Skalk's awesome junk pile contest. The premise involved producing a pile of scrap ideally using no pre-fab items at all, but entirely from junk found around the flat. Go check out the competition thread for more entries. There are some really fantastic pieces in there and voting's currently open for the grand prize.
My entry represents a storage point for a group of scavengers; a spot to stash anything they find that might be useful or valuable before transport shows up.
There are two WiPs because I painted the shelter before cramming it full of junk.

CLICK THE IMAGES FOR BIGNESS

In case anyone's interested, here's the stuff I used:
Base - Cork from a placemat
Bus shelter walls - Expired work ID badge, expired student offer card (sob!), expired Historic Scotland membership card.
Bus shelter window - Clear plastic cut from a blister pack
Bus shelter roof - Offcut of corrugated plastic
Bus shelter rivet - Slices of plastic toothpick

Pipe bundle - Plastic cotton buds with the ends removed twined with copper wire
Fire damaged barrels - Diodes(?) from my old computer circuit board
Tool barrel - Eraser holder off a pencil
Sledgehammer - Toothpick wood and a mysterious metal piece found among junk on my desk
Paint roller - Toothpick wood and paperclip
Wrecking bar - Paper clip
Cogs - Watch parts
Bin bag - Square of bin bag plastic filled with plastic and wood offcuts and tied off with twine
Wheels - Wheel from a toy car cut in half

Really enjoyed all the weathering and the graffiti, and the whole thing was a lot of fun to put together. Hope you like it!
(and Peyma, if you're reading this, the QA won't forget about Saltash, taunting graffiti or otherwise )

@Monkey - Very kind, thanks! The graffiti was really fun to do. It's reaching the point where painting the rest of the terrain is just the chore until I can vandalise and weather it

@Andy - That's really kind, thanks! Really well done on your silver, you totally earned it.

@Cap'n R - Clearly too afraid to give us the opportunity now that we're not completely fumbling and blind

@Ragsta - It had to happen somewhere! Pleased that you like it.

Today's update is a redo on Riggs. I never really liked the previous model and felt like it didn't really fit his character, so I thought I'd make a new one where he was actually toting the needle pistol I found! Been a while since an update, hey?

I'll leave excuses aside and just be glad that I've been painting a little more. I'm sure there are a few things to show, but here's a start -

Extra member for a long running future sports team (the models are a great homage to Salute of the Jugger, a fantastic / awful Rutger Hauer B-movie from the 80s)

One more to go to complete the team!

A pair of stranded peacekeepers - hopefully a full squad to come.

I struggle with blues and whites, so thought these guys might be a good way to force myself to learn.

And finally a few modern things I've done that don't quite fit the theme for this blog, but were fun at the time:
Spoiler:

Hope you like, and as always, please let me know what you think. No promises on the next update but maybe soon?

Thanks for the replies, folks!

@CptJake - Love your take, and a little jealous that you have someone to play the actual game with! How old is your girl? Both teams look good!
The nosering gent is a combination of two models with a little greenstuff. The body is from a model from Scavenge Skirmish Survive, right hand side of the top picture in the link. I like the models made by this gent, but not a huge fan of the faces! The head is from a Victoria Miniatures set, though I can't quite remember which one. Maybe the penal legion? Thanks for the kind words!

@Weety - Cheers! It's a great film, isn't it? I can never find a decent quality copy, but totally worth the watch. I like Rutger Hauer in most things he's in!

@LDD - Thanks very much, it's good to be back! Admittedly they're not as involved as my usual fare, but some of the civvies do have some green stuff work. The roadworker gent is described above, and the lady in the stab vest is actually this Hasslefree survivor with a bit of work. I wanted to make her look a little more equipped!
I'll try to make the next few things I post a little more on-topic

A few more models before I'm away in Cornwall for a few days.

A unit of creatures:

(Hasslefree Mawe and Lesser Mawes with a little green stuff)

Called "mourners" or "howlers" by the people of Caitiff, these creatures use echolocation in a similar means to bats when hunting. Their haunting cries climb to higher and higher frequency as they approach their prey - higher frequency allows for better definition. When you can no longer hear them, you're either safe or they've slipped into ultrasound, and are right on top of you. Better keep running! Originally dwelling in caves and subterranean rivers below Caitiff, they have adapted well to life in the deeper levels of the hives. The set here are a mother and her brood.

And a scavenger mini too:

(One of the Last Heroes from Lead Adventure)
I enjoyed painting his backpack!
Spoiler:

He's absolutely tiny, and was lots of fun to paint.

As always, please let me know what you think. See you all in a few days!

Couple more models for you:

EM4 future skirmish scavenger (£1.50 model!) with legs carved off and resculpted. He had a bit of a clown feet vibe going on and was a little short for my tastes too, but I'm happy with how he turned out.

Moss, a Jackal I converted a wee while ago, but have only just been brave enough to paint. Based off this Hasslefree lass with a fair bit of greenstuff and borrowed bits. The arm is plastruct rod and green stuff with a zombie hand on the end! I'm reasonably happy with her, and I'm hoping the things that are irritating me are things only I will notice. Fingers crossed!

Please let me know what you think of both of them.

Also! Apologies that I've been away for a little while, but with good cause - managed to bugger up my foot good and proper and needed a few operations to get it sorted. Gory pics for those who are into that kind of thing below the cut

Good to see you back again again

Glad to see you still have that creative streak, I have to admit the EM4 miniatures do have a tendency of adopting the clown foot syndrome so good call on converting them.

I also have to say I actually have this mini and it's actually a really nice miniature.

As for Moss I think I recal you showing this before in some stage of construction, turned out looking great mate and the arm came out tops, as for any issues I can't see any springing out.

Now to the last pic WTF did you do to achieve that mess, I gather it wasn't a scalpel slip ........

@Dr H - Thank you! It's getting better, albeit a lot slower than I'd like

@Baiyuan - Thank you again! It's a real shame you've slowed down on the modelling - I really enjoyed the intricacy of all your work, and could never quite fathom how you'd make a cohesive whole from so many small parts. I can relate though, playing with grown up toy soldiers needs to take a back seat to other life things. I've way less time for this stuff myself at the moment (first wee one on the way in less than a week now!), but I'm still going to try and do things whenever I can. Your praise means a lot though, so cheers.

Different kind of wee beastie today - a giant spider from Bones to grow my bestiary a little bit. I've not done much fur or scale, so I'm trying to branch out with a few different creatures. Quick and fun to try something different though. Hope you like!

Out of interest, has anyone got a small number of varying creatures painted up for skirmish games and the like? I like the idea of having an unpredictable pool of critters to throw at people, and I'd love to see examples of other people's zoos!

Struggled with taking pictures of this gent for some reason - just couldn't get the colours to come out right. One of my favourite Copplestone Scavengers, I've been meaning to paint this gent for a while. I love the awkward stepping pose, it's so characterful - I gave him a slight right leg wound to explain it. Was going for a fleecy collar look as well, which I hope came through. Let me know what you reckon!

EDIT: I'm also going to be really crass and point out that I'm selling a bunch of OOP guard stuff (and a few other things) on eBay with a sale that ends tomorrow morning. Feel free to have a nosey at my eBay page! /plug

Cheers LDD! Let's not start the fisherman thing again

The sneakers definitely have a converse feel to them - it was my wife who suggested the orange colour as a contrast to the rest of him, which I think came out pretty well! I've got a few other EM4 and Copplestone guys that have been in my pile of shame for a while; I think they're the type of cheap models a lot of folks will have impulse bought. I'm trying to power through a few of them without obsessing too much on cohesive colour schemes and the like. Much less angsty painting something I haven't spent hours working with green stuff on!

I should start a 'paint the damn things' challenge or something...

I think everyone has an Em4 or Copplestone mini in their stash, I actually quite like them as they have a touch of old school to them.

As for the 'paint the damn things' I think this could work to motivate

But I like the militant look you have gone for with her, quite subdued for your normal palette.

Thanks mate for making me feel old but it was the very end of the 80s almost the 90s if that is almost your decade

They did kind of push the Rambo theme a bit with the range but I still have a soft spot for the old unloved range.
Plus I have seen a couple of simple conversions, one that stood out for me was the one with the cowboy hat which really changed the look of the model.

I noticed that the colour pallette was a change from your norm but worked well.

Just a quick update, first model I've managed to paint whilst my newborn son is napping!

Original model is part of a group of yakuza type robots I received in an indiegogo bid - I never really had a use for them, but the guy was £20 off hitting his target with about two hours to go and I really wanted to help out. I filed off a little detail, added the stowage and weaponry, and sculpted his facemask. The paintjob wasn't quite what I hoped it would be, but I'm happy with him overall.

He'll be part of a group I'm playing with creating at the moment, a sort of anti-slavery group freeing AI. Partly inspired by the new Star Wars films, I'm hoping to give the robot characters a little personality whilst they are clearly still automatons. This chap, though you can't see it in the pic, has a wooden robot model on the back of his belt, childishly painted in the same colours as himself. Humans in the group (Moss, the previous model with the bionic arm will likely be the first) will all have some form of augment. Hope you like, and please let me know what you think!

Like the model and the paint job, also loving the fluff gives more character to your design.

I was dissapointed that this wasn't an actual miniature it looks really cool, the work you did to face section really pulls it together.
Could do with a picture of the back to see the toy robot though ha ha

Also don't know if it is intentional but is that a C3PO reference from the force awakens ?

@weety - Cats certainly seem to sleep more than this little guy does... I;m glad you like the corrosion! It's mostly stippling of browns, but there's a oil wash and a little weathering powder in there too. My main problem seems to be knowing when to stop!

@LDD - I really liked the wooden storm trooper doll at the start, that was partly what inspired me! Apologies, I'll get a shot next time I post. It's really just a bunch of rods, not that impressive and I feel like it's built up now...

Been messing around with some foamboard for a bit of new terrain! Just needs a blast of texture spray, which as you can see from the little spurt on the model I've run out of. Then some plastic details (doors, windows, supports etc.) and painting!

What do you reckon? I'm still enjoying foamboard, really easy and fun material to work with. I've heard good things about insulation board too though - anyone had more fun experience with that?

Finished up the terrain, and a bit more graffiti stuff to go with it. I was trying to create a garage with an attached shop / outlet, and tried to add a few touches to make it look a little more lived-in.

A few more shots under the cut:
Spoiler:

And a shot with the other building I made already:

I loosely based the shape of the building off a design I found online, though the dimensions are different as I built it around a box and some foam from Christmas gifts!
Spoiler:

The wind generator is plasticard, cotton buds and parts from an empty pen. I was pretty pleased with how it came out, though not sure it'll survive too long when it starts getting bashed around during games!

Over all I like it the only thing I can suggest is the following :

1 Some kind of shop sign above the shutters.

2 Add a few posters here and there, maybe with relevance to the shop and its use.

3 Security wire around the edge of the roof perhaps barbed wire.

4 Maybe add a security gate half way up the stairs.

Hope these might be of some use mate.

I was hoping I could pick Dakka's collective brain, if anyone could help me out. I've tried to print tiny posters and signs before, but they always come out blurred when I shrink them down. I've followed some guides that should keep the images high quality, but they're still basically unreadable. Nice looking buildings. Ruin's coming on well.

Printing. Can't help specifically, but can you adjust the quality of the print (on the printer or through the software)? Look for raising the resolution (dots per inch = dpi on printers) and maybe trying with differing quality settings; such as "for text" or "for photo".

It all depends on the printer and the software as to what you can try. And as I have an Epsom (still an inkjet), I can't comment on what HP's use.

@Roddy - Hey man! Hope you're doing well down South. I've not had a chance to play much lately, but I'm actually seeing P tomorrow for a game of zombicide! We'll have to open an extra beer for you.

So who knew having a kid takes up so much free time?! Finished up the building I was working on, and all in all I'm pleased with how it's come out. Needs a wee bit of stencilling of a hab block number and maybe a few posters here and there, but I'll do those at the same time for all my buildings.

The idea is that it's a 'hot bunk' type dorm system for workers, now left abandoned. Gameplay wise it allows for hard cover on one level, two-directional cover on the second, and a flexible third level which can have varying scatter terrain. Should sync up well with connections to the other buildings too!

I'm quite proud of some of the smaller details - the doors are mostly card, and the pillars are made of tubing a paintbrush arrived in.

These stairs are card with press moulded grey stuff detailing, pinned into the wall

Some of the graffiti round the back

And finally a shot of all the buildings so far together. Coming together into a nice little outpost!

Next on the list is probably some scatter terrain or makeshift bridges, just to break things up a bit. Please let me know what you think though - I'd really like any tips or comments.

I love the graffiti on these! You've got a great theme going on with these. I like the varying levels on your buildings and the little details like the dumpster or generator thing in the back of your newest piece. Might I suggest, perhaps for your next piece, a few simple blocks or squat cynlinders on the roof to represent air conditioners and also provide limited cover up there? You could even make the units separately as a sort of "roof scatter".

I have some ideas for adding detail to your pieces without a whole lot of work. In see you have an overhanging lip on the roof of your latest piece. Perhaps you could tuck a small rectangle of cardstock or plasticard up under there as a fuse box, junction box, or vent? It doesn't even have to be huge, just as long it's painted like it's metal. It's a tiny, tiny detail that adds so much to a piece. You could run really thin plasticard rods from the ground to the "box" and make them look like wires. Maybe bend a few into a window or a drill hole in the exterior wall like it's a cable feed?

If you add "rust" streaks from your metal details and splotchy black washes on your exteriors it goes a long way towards adding the look of age.

And if you're not already, I recommend doing image searches for abandoned buildings. If you look up "sandy hook shore battery" or just follow this link, because I already did, it should give you a treasure trove of reference photos for the stuff you're making. Hope this helps!

Wow, lots of comments! Thanks guys!

@warboss waaazag - Thanks a lot for the kind words, and particularly for the suggestions. I like the idea of the air con units, particularly for the flatter roofs without wall edges. I've been trying to think of some roof clutter that would provide small areas of cover without looking too jarring and they may well be right on the money! I'll have a go at your other suggestions too - breaking up flat spaces with something like a junction box should work a treat.

@Cleatus - thank you! I'm thinking of some big ventilation fan type things on the bigger storage type buildings too, will see what I can do!

@drcheese - thanks a lot! They were surprisingly easy to do, and I've been looking to spend as little money as possible on these

I'm on late shifts all week this week (typing this from the staff room on my break!), so progress may be a wee bit slow. Hopefully something new to show you soon.

Thanks a lot, Dr. H! I wasnt sure how sturdy they'd be, but with some decent pinning, they can definitely take the weight of a lead figure, which is always useful!

Lots of little projects on the go, but I thought I'd do a quick summary post on where I am just now.

Tried out Rogue Stars with my friend @Ragsta, and test game featured a little droid robot that annoyed the hell out of him. Anything that irritating of course required a proper model, so I've knocked up Dipper (DP714, a repurposed maintenance droid) out of green stuff and plasticard.

He's tiny, and was lots of fun to make.

Willow, the tech who made him, will feature in a future post.

I've also been working on a larger building. Still very WiP, but you can see where I'm going with it:

I've tried to take some advice regarding detailing from comments on the previous buildings. The painting has only just started, obviously. Needs more detailing, a lot of weathering and some more graffiti. In particular, I'm planning on making a little access ramp to cover the gap between the building / walkway before doing any more painting.

I've also made a few quick barriers:

And (off-topic), made tons of zombies for zombicide.
Spoiler:

Please let me know what you think - comments are always much appreciated, and often give a lot more inspiration than you think!

Tom

So Dipper is finished - really pleased with how he came out. First model I've ever made completely from scratch, and the final thing is pretty close to the image I had in my head! He's equipped with a wee probe for maintenance and repair work, which can also deliver a nasty zap to any unfriendly individuals that get too close.
Paintjob's a little lacking, but he's a tiny thing, so I'm not too fussed.

Please let me know if you like him, or you don't. It's been a little quiet in here lately!

Any chance of a reverse angle so we can see the leg better (and the other 50% of the model)?

Thanks a lot for the replies folks!

@PossumCraft - Thank you! I love painting faces as they carry all the character of a model. It's often the first thing I paint, and then spend the rest of the paintjob being terrified of slipping and ruining the face

@Dr H - Cheers! The model is actually an amalgamation of lots of different bits, mostly from Victoria minis, but also the DE hellion kit and a few other things.

I tried to take some extra shots, but his leg is mostly hidden by one of the grass tufts. There's an unflattering close up under the cut.

Spoiler:

@Weety - Thanks very much! Wish I could have an output of painted models like yours

Thanks Theo! The rubbers I mount them on to paint do look a lot like a pedestal, right?

I'm off work for a few weeks after another op on my foot, and I thought I might try something I've been meaning to do for a while - sculpt a mini from an armature!
I'll be following some step by step tutorials, and I thought it might be fun to post here as I go. Maybe someone else wants to have a go and we can compare notes? There's some good videos here. I'll be personally cheating a wee bit and using an existing head and maybe some hands.

Anyway, here's the inauspicious start of Imogen Bracken, the leader of the Broken Tree Salvage Company. Hopefully will turn into something fun!

@Peyma - You should try too! Would be fun to see them side by side. I'm afraid I did send off all those bits in the end. Ebay has its uses.

@b-tone - Thank you! They were a lot of fun to make, and I'm hoping to eventually have a full tables worth.

Two fairly unexciting further steps completed today -

Armature posed and filed - the filing is supposed to help the first layer of greenstuff stick to the wire a little better, though I'm not sure how much it helped!

Thin rough coat of greenstuff, acts as a layer for later, bulkier sculpting. Apparently trying to sculpt larger things directly over the wire results in it sliding around and forming air pockets, which make it weaker and tough to cast. Learning things at each stage!

Not looking like much yet, but it's been fun so far. If anyone knows much about sculpting or armatures, please feel free to chip in or correct me at any point! I'm flying blind here.

Slightly delayed post, but yesterday I did some bulking on the legs and hips. Still very rough, but trying to get some vague muscle group shapes on the go for my own practice. Just looks more like she's wearing big pants!

Will hopefully get the top half bulked this evening.

Good choice to avoid the head and hands, they are the hardest parts to sculpt (because they are so recognisable).

Something a bit different this week - expanding on the Caitiff wildlife with a new creature, the basilisk. I've been trying to produce more creatures to use as NPCs in various games on Caitiff and it's surrounding planets, and it's a lot of fun trying to base them in your setting!

He's a fairly big fella, as you can see here

Big, naturally armoured and cold-blooded, basilisks adapted for life in the Savannah areas of Caitiff, before the large-scale industrialisation that came with the hives. With an incredibly low metabolic rate and little to fear from predators, these creatures will remain perfectly motionless for days at a time waiting for prey to pass by. Their main food source used to be the herds of large grazing creatures found on the plains of Caitiff. When the time is right, the basilisk can move with frightening speed with a burst of adrenaline from a specialised gland, taking down prey and gorging on enough meat to sustain itself for a further week of patient waiting.
Basilisks have adapted well to the deeper depths of the underhive, feeding on spiders, rats and occasionally unwitting humans. They are uncommon nonetheless, being solitary animals that react viciously to a rival within their large territories. Should it have fed recently, an encounter with a basilisk is harmless to a travelling hiver - they have little interest in humans and will rarely attack unless provoked. Even their name was coined by hivers based on the statuesque stillness of the creatures, a spin on a half-remembered Terran legend. Despite this, many tales are told around campfires and watering holes of the terrible ferocity of these ancient reptiles that spring from the darkness where they have lain unseen, and it is not uncommon for them to be blamed for anything from missing children to vanished caravans.

The model itself is a basilisk from reaper's bones line. I love the sculpt, but am really not a fan of the material. I lost a lot of detail before I started painting due to problems with the paint adhering, despite a thorough wash to get rid of mould release agent. Ended up needing a coat of primer and a matt spray before any paint would stick to it. Some spiders that I have painted from the same line also reacted strangely, with the paint becoming sticky and flaking off a few weeks after painting. Managed to rescue them with a few coats of a different varnish, but the line has definitely caused me a few issues. Anyone else had similar problems with them?

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the paint job or fluff for the basilisk. Also still open to critique for Bracken above! Any and all comments and criticism is much appreciated. Cheers for looking!

Nice. Like the cute little thingy. Nicely painted.

Oh, and good work on the sculpting.
Only bit of feedback I can see is the shoulder to hip ratio. Her hips look too narrow for a woman compared to her shoulders. It's probably the easiest way to distinguish the sexes in model form (without boob armour).
But great work on all the details.

Thanks for the comment, Dr. H, and the advice too - that's really helpful. I thought the shoulders might be a little too wide, but by the time I'd noticed I was too far in to correct it. Was hoping I'd have this finished before the next update, but I'm off to the US for my brother's wedding tomorrow, so won't be able to do any more on it for a while. In the meantime, here's a WIP of Ronan Decker, security for the salvage crew the Riggs and Bracken are part of.

I'm fairly happy with how he is so far, but open to suggestions! He has two bionic legs which are turning out a little more complex than I planned, hence the cutoff picture.
The head is from Victoria Minis - it's an old metal range that I'm not sure she still casts. Goggles and a bit of extra hair are mine, and the rest is scratch sculpted.

I'm enjoying sculpting a lot just now, but I'd love any comments or criticism, so please let me know what you think!

Looks nice so far. Why the cut-off picture? It may just be me, but I find it really helps to appreciate the miniature and see how it all fits together if it's all there, even if some parts are unfinished. for instance, his hips seem a bit narrow to me because there's not enough of the legs to get a good size comparison (and from this angle the helmet cuts off the view on his bum ), if you know what I mean.

@Dr H - Thank you! I've probably been watching too many westerns, but I thought a poncho would fit my setting fairly well.

@Geifer - Thank you. You're actually dead on - the reason I cropped it was that I'd realised the hips were too narrow and needed fixing. Thought that they might distract from the stuff I've done on his upper half, but obviously I've not cropped it well enough!
Should probably have just waited until he was finished, but I wanted to post something up before I was away. I've been doing some fixing and sculpting today, so back-shifts allowing, I'll be able to post some finished photos this weekend.

Fool! The Witchfinder General cannot be tricked!

I know the feeling. I like seeing things grow, but all too often catch myself thinking "woah, this is shoddy work. Can't show it at this stage!" It's why I don't normally post many WIPs, especially early ones.

But you shouldn't let something like that get in the way of excitement. That's what WIP is for. If it want's to be posted, who are you to deny it?

Not sure if you've watched too many westerns, but I like the poncho on this model. It's a good detail to add and I think it goes really well with his head. It would be easy to evoke too much of a western feel if he had a cowboy hat to match, but the goggles and shaggy hair make the look distinct and modern rather than last century.

@Ynneadwraith - Thanks very much! I'm really glad you're enjoying it; I'm a big fan of your world building, very inspirational in what I'm making just now, so I hope you can find something here too. When it comes to the sculpting, I would say just dive in. The mental block of taking the step and starting is probably the hardest one to overcome, and getting fairly decent basic results is pretty easy. You'll see that I was pretty terrible at the start of the blog and I'd like to think I've improved a lot, which means anyone can do it If I had one piece of advice it would be to get a decent set of colour shapers like these. The silicone tips completely eliminate the problem of GS sticking if you keep them wet, and I found everything a lot easier after I started using them.

@Geifer - I often feel the same! But I've found I'm much happier to continue a project I'm frustrated with if I can see that someone else's WIPs don't look fantastic, so why not Thanks for the kind words.

I've actually finished my sculpt for Ronan Decker, security for the Broken Tree Salvage Co. His bionics are a little unusual, but I was inspired by advances in exoskeleton systems that I've come across at work and running stilts.

He's a big fella with the prosthetics in place, around a head taller that other folks in his group. I tried to keep his proportions in check for a reasonably sized human with the exception of the bionic additions.

Do you think it works? I've been deliberating a little bit over him, but I think I'm finally at a place where I'm satisfied with him. Please let me know what you think!

Looking good. While I'm a fan of T-800 bionics and never tire of seeing those, it doesn't always have to be that and I think the stilt prosthetics fit him pretty well. Height looks in line with what you would expect. He doesn't look freakishly tall, but you can see that something is off (other than that he's missing his legs ) with his proportions because of the foreign devices grafted on his body.

@Littletower - Thank you! I've got my models for the squad lined up (apart from the final one I'm sculpting!), and they look okay to me.

@Geifer - Thanks! 'A little off' is exactly what i was hoping for with his proportions, so I'm really glad you said that In my head, the 'exoskeleton' fits into embedded ports along his hips and spine, allowing it to be released when he is in a zero gravity atmosphere on the Nomad. Same kind of relief as ditching a suit after a long day at work

@Dr H - Cheers! I'm glad you think so.

Bit of a cheat, as I've posted these models before. I'm trying to expand the Caitiff bestiary, however, and I thought I'd throw these up again with a little fluff piece I've written to keep the Basilisk company.

Mourners are known by different names in the various settlements found within Skew spire - some call them 'howlers', 'hunters', 'blanks' or even 'banshees'. However they are labelled, mourners are almost universally feared by colonists in the deeper sections of the hive.
Evolving in some of the deeper cavern systems below Bolne, these beasts are well adapted to the darkness of the underhive. Pack hunters that time and evolution have left completely blind, mourners instead use a complex form of echolocation to tail their prey. From a distance, a pack of mourners emit long, low vocalisations that deeply penetrate the area around them, like a cross between a dirge and a growl. As the pack approaches their target, the sound climbs to a higher pitch as the frequency of the calls rise and the detail of the image returned improves. Yips and squeaks from the excited pack join the crescendo. Settlers who have survived attacks by a hunting pack describe a chorus of mournful screams and wails, rising in intensity even as the group flees. When a pack is upon you, a sudden silence falls as the packs' calls rise above the frequency of human hearing. Respite from these nightmarish wails, however, will be sadly brief.
Some particularly brave settlers have hunted mourners for meat and leather. Their hides are dry and coarse, making sturdy footwear, and their meat is sweet and slow to spoil. With most packs moving in matriarchal groups with at least 4 members, however, picking off a single target without drawing the ire of its brethren is difficult.

Mourners are Hasslefree mawes with a little filing and greenstuff work on the smaller ones. Beautiful models, and pretty scary to look at!

I hope you're enjoying the mini bestiary tour, and please let me know what you think of the words or the models. Thanks for looking!

Latest model sculpted and last one for the Broken Tree Salvage Co. A void-born tech called Willow. The model is supposed to sync up in pose with Riggs, which should hopefully be a little more obvious with a group shot once she's painted. I really struggled with photos for her - all the different tones of green have made it quite hard to differentiate different parts. I'm not as happy with her as some of my other sculpts, but hopefully I'll pull a rescue with the paint job. Current plan is some spiralling symbolic tattoos to her right side, and the green / brown scheme with dark teal accents to match the rest of the crew

As always, I'd really appreciate any comments and criticism (constructive preferred ), so please let rip!

Agreed on trying to see beyond differently colored components. I've learned to trust that the paint job will fix it, but I too struggle to see everything fitting together on occasion.

Nice job on the sculpt.
Looks like someone slipped a brick or two in her pack. "Is this heavier or just me?"

Multi-coloured sculpts / builds are tricky to assess during the process. This is what I find primer is useful for; it's the last step before painting that will show if the build is complete and nothing has been missed; can always be primed again after modifications.

Thanks very much for the kind words, guys, they're really appreciated.

Okay, time for some background! The models I've been working on the last few months are a little different - I'm actually working on my first crew for a game system called Rogue Stars. I'm trying to make them very personal and unique, as each band is only between 4 and 7 models. The system is kind of RPG based and rewards narrative play, so I've tried to come up with some decent background for the team and the setting. The crew are merchants flying on the LCS Samara, though they also do a little less-than-legal salvage on the side. The setting I'm working in is Comora, the system in which my old planet of Caitiff is based, and I have some plans for expanding the background of a few more worlds as I play. Lots of world building fun to be had!

First model up that you've seen painted already is Imogen Bracken, captain of the Samara and leader of the crew.

I've got a little background for her that also covers the group as a whole:

Imogen Bracken. Trader, amateur botanist, captain of the LCS Samara, and in her own words, complete fool.
Born the fifth daughter of a middle class family in a relatively affluent system, Imogen grew up with an education, but no expectations. Disappointing her family with drugs and 'unsavoury associations', she was told to straighten herself out or leave. Though she cut the stimulants, Imogen found it harder to cut her ties with her friends, and eventually a decision was made on her behalf.
With a sudden urgent need for income, a strong sense of adventure and a fairly naïve view of life in the drift, Bracken set out to leave the planet. With funds amassed with friends, sponsorship from local businesses and in debt to some very questionable former associates, Bracken purchased a small ageing cargo lighter and began heavy modifications to the ship. The plan was to outfit her with an array of hydroponics equipment and life support extension to allow for mid-range travel both within and without atmosphere, allowing the transport of crops and medicinal plants that would not survive the journey in a conventional cargo hold. With a skeleton crew of folk she could trust, Bracken dusted off on the newly christened Samara. There was a potentially a good living to be made in the outer systems, where crops and plant supplies were the lifeblood of the new colonists. Unfortunately, Imogen's reception into the world of interplanetary business was lukewarm at best.
Bracken lacked the ruthlessness for large scale trade. She would sell at a loss to struggling colonies, refuse to undercut competitors for whom she had personal respect, and was over-optimistic in her calculations of potential profit. Pursued by debtors and feeling responsible for worsening conditions and the growing distress of her crew, Bracken went against her better judgement and took on a well-paying job off-system with a man named Vane Finner.  Finner introduced himself as an 'Inquisitor', reportedly working for an influential government within the central planets. He required several samples of rare and dangerous toxic plants from a research base on the jungle planet of Amarok, within the Comora system. The payoff for the job was grand, and enough for Bracken to overlook several crew members' serious concerns about the distance, as well as Finner's evasiveness over the purpose of the samples taken. They made the jump mag-locked to the Saragossa, a jump-capable frigate run by Finner's men.
The job was a disaster. Finner had misled them on the dangers involved in the requisition, and they faced hostile wildlife, virile infection and a local militant group. Bracken lost most of her crew to disease in the hostile jungle of Amarok, and the Inquisitor himself died along with all hands of his expedition team fighting cultists on the planet's surface. The Saragossa jumped from the system in the midst of the conflict, leaving Samara, with no jump drive of her own, stranded in foreign space. Panicked and with no defence against incoming hostile forces, Bracken ordered a dust-off before the return of the last stragglers of the expedition. She would tell herself that this had been a required measure to protect her remaining crew. Perhaps this was true.
A few years have passed since the events that stranded the crew of the Samara in the Comora system, and Bracken and her surviving friends have carved themselves a niche among the foreign worlds. The dead have been mourned, and new crew found both among Finner's marooned men and the populace of local spaceports. Bracken has resumed trading as the Broken Tree Salvage Co., with healthy plantlife again a roaring trade on barren worlds like Caitiff or the many moons and satellites of Dullahan. A new line of work has also emerged in salvage and repairs - jump technology is a rarity in a backwater like Comora, but with enough hulls cracked...
Still a touch too trusting, the difficulties of life in an isolated system have hardened Bracken's heart, and her resolve. She is fiercely defensive of her crew, and has developed a skill at inspiring loyalty. The echoes of her actions on Amarok have not left her mind, or those of her shipmates, but Bracken has nonetheless earned a modest respect from many local traders as a fair and reliable captain.

And finally the cards I've made for her character in game. Rogue stars is a fun system, but relies a lot on modifiers and rules that can sometimes be hard to find! Thought that this would be a decent middle ground for additional info in game.

Apologies for the huge dump on a single character, but I'm really excited for this project!

Please let me know what you think. I'd love any encouraging words, ideas or useful criticism, so please fire away!

Thanks, Llamahead! It's a fun system, and something I'd encourage more people to give a go. You can get a PDF of the rules fairly cheap from Osprey Publishing if you're interested in having a look.
I was considering a model for the Samara, but at 28mm it would take up most of the board! She does have a small shuttle attached used for smaller missions, and that is indeed on my list of projects to tackle soon. Should be fun!

Next member of the crew is Levin Grigg, ship mechanic, and actually a model I've posted here before. Not a scratch sculpt like Bracken, but using legs, torso and face from Victoria Miniatures, GW hellion arms and a fair bit of green stuff.

An image of the sculpting stuff:

And a little character background:
A born engineer, Levin Grigg has spent most of his life underground. Raised in a  small community deep within a dilapidated region of Skew Spire just before the environmental disaster that poisoned Caitiff, Riggs was well into his teens before even seeing the surface. He started his career maintaining runners for a merchant in the Warrens, the vast network of transportation tunnels that connected the massive hives penetrating the atmosphere. He served with the Jackal cells of Pinepoint, earning a place in the sprawling town by clearing the mine shafts below it. Even when his military role was ended by a decades-old landmine, Riggs threw himself into improving his home town, working on a water filtration system and rudimentary equipment for the developing hospital. As conditions on the surface improved and off-world trade finally began to return to the barren planet, it was Levin who learned to repair and maintain the often battered trade ships that visited.
Riggs was hired to fix Samara's overloaded afterburner a few months after her arrival on Amarok, taking the initiative to improve her ablative heat shielding and recalibrate the engine drive system as he did. Despite his pride in his work, Bracken's offer of longer-term employment took Levin by surprise. Though he would be leaving behind good friends and good memories, Riggs felt that he had had his fill of life in Pinepoint. It was time to see the sky.
Affable, good humoured, and with a darker sense of humour than his manner would suggest, Levin quickly fell in with the crew of the Samara. His main role on board is the maintenance of the mechanical systems of the ship, but he is also called on for away expeditions where his mechanical expertise may prove useful. Afflicted with a new wanderlust, Levin thrives on novel experiences and new cultures. Fond of cheap alcohol, exotic food and any excuse to explore with his two dogs, Sasha and Bo, Riggs needs little encouragement to join an excursion planet-side.

And finally, the cards for using him in game:

For folks who play Rogue Stars, what do you think of the homebrew rules for his crap prosthetic? Gives the same effect as a crippled limb, but with the added bonus to armour of a bionic. I've valued it at -2XP. Does that sound reasonable?

As before, I'd really appreciate any comments or criticism on the model, the painting or the background. I'm also open to ideas for the crew or the campaign background. Next model is something brand new, I promise! Thanks for reading!

Thanks very much, Dr. H! I'm never sure if anyone's actually reading the background bits, so the comment is much appreciated

The next two crew members aboard the Samara are up now, one of whom you've not seen before.

First up is Willow Teague, another scratch sculpt, with the exception of a Victoria Minis head. Again, quite a few things I'd like to change if I did it all again, but I'm satisfied with how she came out.

A little background for her:
Willow Teague, shuttle pilot and technician onboard the Samara, is more comfortable aboard a ship than off it. Without the gentle hum of the motor, the whirring of the life support and the creaking of metal, the world seems cold and quiet. Willow was voidborn, with no state or planet, on an ancient Ark ship travelling between worlds.
Creations of the Thainian religion over five centuries ago, the vast Ark ships were at the time the largest vessels ever built in a human shipyard. Home to several hundred families, the massive craft were sent out into the void with no navigational equipment, leaving the fate of the hundreds of chosen to their creator. Their religion had taught them that the planet on which they landed would be a holy and promised land, where everything they could ever want would be provided for them.
550 years later, life on Ark 7 was less idyllic. The Ark, though well built, was never designed to fly unmaintained for as long as it had. Over time, circuits failed and cables corroded, and technical problems became more and more commonplace. With localised hull breaches, life-support failures and even rumours of savage creatures in the oldest parts of the hold, death on the Ark was brutal and random. Few remembered the religious teachings of their forefathers, but a new superstition developed among the surviving nomads, passing from generation to generation.
Willow met Imogen Bracken as a young woman in her home city of Tavi, having been placed there as a refugee following her eventual rescue from the Ark. Close friends and drinking buddies, the Samara was a shared dream between them - a freedom to choose their own destiny and escape the enforced paths of life that they had found themselves in.
Notably skilled with technology from a lifetime of fudged and desperate repairs on the Ark, Willow is invaluable to the running of Samara. Her character is odd - she has an optimistic nihilism that some find disturbing, coupled with a few tics and routines that she could not shed on leaving the Ark. Despite this, Willow has an exceptional gift for bringing out the best in others. New crew members initially tend to give the strange tattooed girl a wide berth, but to those who get to know her, she is a loyal and supportive friend. Willow has a fascination with plants both comestible and recreational, having eaten only nutrient slurry for her formative years. Bracken has allowed her a reserved area of the hydroponics bay for growing whatever she can find, and Willow is well known for sharing both delicious foodstuffs and potent drugs.

And finally her cards for the game:

In addition, I have a little buddy for her, DP714, a maintenance droid. First robot I made from scratch, and a lot of fun to do!

Here's an reminder of his green:

A little background for him:
Never far from Willow is her companion and sort-of-pet DP714, known among the crew as 'Dipper'. A maintenance droid originally serving upon Ark 7, Dipper was found in a state of disrepair by Willow as a teenager. Over time she has fixed him up and gradually augmented him with new features and programming routines. Capable of on-the-fly repairs aboard the ship and a fair degree of autonomy in combat with rudimentary AI, DP714 has become a valued member of the crew.

And finally, his cards as well:

Hope you like the two of them, and as always, please let me know what you think. Any ideas, comments or criticisms are much appreciated.

Thanks very much, kestral! If you like spring legs you might be a fan of the next update

Up today is the FINAL MEMBER of the Samara crew (who will appear in campaigns, at least) - Ronan Decker. He's an old soldier, and acts as expedition security for the crew.

He's another scratch sculpt, with only a GW cadian helmet and a head from Victoria Minis (with sculpted hair and goggles). The bionics are wire and plasticard. I wanted to do some slightly different bionics to the usual terminator-style stuff you see, so these are more of an exoskeleton affair. I was inspired by stuff like recent advances in treatment of folks with paraplegia and running stilts

As you may remember, he's a big fella with the prosthetics in place, around a head taller that other folks in his group. I tried to keep his proportions in check for a reasonably sized human with the exception of the bionic additions. I was going for something a bit 'other', and I'm hoping I haven't overdone it.

As always, here's some backstory:
Ronan Decker has survived a lifetime of conflict. Drafted into the PDF on Osciae II as a child, he has served over 15 standard years in the armed forces, and a further 15 as a mercenary. He has fought for governmental forces maintaining order against radical rebel elements in distant colonies. He has fought alongside freedom fighters oppressed by distant and tyrannical regimes in the central planets. Ronan has assisted in the purge of alien threats as well as the protection of persecuted alien refugees, and been on both sides of an orbital bombardment. For what felt like longer than any other task, he has stood endless nights of guard duty for self-important arseholes who never bothered to learn his name.
As all his years in hellish warzones have blended into one, Ronan realised that he had learned only two things -

- Fate is a bastard.
- Few of the folks on the ground deserve what's coming to them

Decker learned early that the most well prepared soldier in the world can still be the poor bastard to step on a landmine, and that stray shots don't care about rank or training. He has no grand notions regarding the reason for his survival above that of endless colleagues, but he is grateful for every day that he sees ceiling when he opens his eyes.
Ronan has fought alongside a great many different people, and seen a lot of the things folks will fight for. He has seen people driven by love and loyalty, by the need to protect their homes or the people they care about. He has seen many more of these men through the sights of his rifle. He has seen men driven by hatred and revenge (also having once fallen into that camp himself), has seen thousands of those who would give their lives for an idea fed to them by someone with no care for their well-being. Decker has seen many things, and they have made him - tired. When he was young, he was sure of himself, and of the decisions he had to make. Some people lived, some people died, and that was how it had to be to keep order. Lately though, whatever side of a conflict he finds himself on, Decker sees the men and women from his past, both friends and foes. Taking a life seems – bigger, and no longer a choice that is his to make.
In the last few years, the cocktail contained in the darts loaded into Decker's rifle has changed. There was no specific turning point, but the toxins that Ronan mixes have been less and less potent, more sedative than poison. Ronan is no doctor, mind, and some of his targets will still experience the long sleep. Despite his new leaning towards pacifism, Decker is not naïve to the dangers of life in the outer reaches, or the fact that some people will only respond to violence. He values his own life and the lives of his friends, and his sidearm remains as deadly as the day it was issued.

Decker was hired with a large contingent to fight alongside Inquisitor Finner on Amarok, and is one of the few mercs who returned to the ship. Stranded with the crew of the Samara in foreign space, he initially took on Bracken's contract with a view to making enough credits to buy passage elsewhere. It did not take long, however, for Ronan to feel at home among the civilian crew of the Samara, and his credits have now found more short-term use. Decker is quiet, but friendly, and has developed a reputation as an understanding ear amongst the crew.
His cybernetics are attached via ports in his spine, a process both painful and draining - At any opportunity Decker disables the artificial gravity in his quarters, preferring the freedom of flight unrestrained by his exoskeleton. Though he talks little of his injuries and his past, Decker cannot stand crowds, and becomes sullen and unpleasant in such situations.

And the character cards I'll be playing with:

Non-lethal rounds and the combat helmet are homebrew, but I feel fit with his character.

I really hope you like him, as he was the model I was most unsure of when sculpting. I'd love to know what you think, so please let me know, good or bad. Thanks for looking!

Thanks again for the kind words, folks! Another wee hiatus - I'm DMing my first game of Dungeons and Dragons for my wife and a few friends, and worldbuilding sucks up a LOT of time!

Here's something a little different - I've been playing with the Frostgrave Gnoll kit to make an alien species to expand my galaxy of Comora.

These guys are Maroques - indigenous sentients on Amarok, a jungle planet in orbit of the Comoran sun. Though making contact with non-space faring sentients is banned under several universal laws, Amarok has many rich mineral deposits, and a number of corporations have set up base planetside to begin extraction. Maroques are smart, curious, and natural scavengers, though their own tech level was little beyond smelting iron at the point of contact. As such, it did not take long for off-world arms and armaments to fall into the hands of some of the more enterprising Maroque settlements, drastically altering the balance of power on the planet.
Maroques are mainly confined to the planet of Amarok itself, having no real understanding of the science behind space travel, or the weaponry they steal or buy. Some groups have been armed and trained by local interests to attack their rivals or defend their installations, while other groups may attack or harass colonists to steal what they can use. Rare groups of Maroques have stowed away on some of the larger cargo freighters, and can occasionally be found wandering the deeper reaches of space stations or hives. The equipment they use is a mix of scavenged modern weaponry and iron age tech, with different groups' equipment largely reflecting whom they have been able to raid most recently. Laser armaments and other self-charging weapons are highly prized, as Maroques lack the knowledge or equipment to produce kinetic ammunition once what they have is spent.

Modelling-wise, they are a fun mix of medieval parts and sci-fi tech. I wanted to integrate the parts a little to stop them looking too much like medieval figs with guns glued on, so a fair bit of green stuff work, and some mixed added equipment too. I'm looking forward to painting them - going to do a little experimenting, but I'm picturing earth tones for the robes and gear with maybe a green spot colour, plus an incongruent camo scheme (maybe urban?) on their scavenged equipment. Should be fun!

This gent is the pack leader - a little older and more confident than the others. The smooth top he has on is a scavenged stab vest.

One of the younger pups - less gear, more enthusiasm!

Close quarters enthusiast. The axe in his left hand is a modern trench weapon and a recent acquisition, the one in his right hand is still his favourite - a well worn crude iron piece.

A maroque with a prized laser rifle - leave it in the sun and it gets all its charges back!

And my favourite for last - an intimidating gent with a scavenged flamethrower. Works almost as well filled with pitch and tar.

I hope you like them, and please let me know what you think. A little different to some of my other models in this thread, so very open to C&C.

Thanks a lot for the kind words, everyone! Gnolls are one of my favourite D&D races, so it's a lot of fun to try and translate them to something that fits a sci-fi vibe.

@Syro - how's the DMing going? It's been a lot of fun on this end, but my players certainly have a tendency to do stuff I haven't planned for. Accidentally killing one of my NPCs who was supposed to give a ton of exposition, for example. Lots of thinking on your feet! How far have you got with the starting campaign?

Painted up the first gent over the last few days. I'm new to painting fur which was a bit of a learning curve, but I'm still fairly happy with the results. The drab cloth for his clothes blends a little with the tone I've used for the fur, but I'm trying to go for some variation in their colouring so hopefully it'll balance out once the others are done.

I'd really love any C&C on this bloke, as I'm working through the others as well. Always looking to improve, so please fire away

That finished knoll is looking good. I'm impressed with how much has been added to the base. Was this particular knoll all from the original knoll mini except the gun? I think the gun looks very smooth and natural, like it was always part of it after the work you have put in.

Thanks for asking about the DMing. We were planning on playing once a week, but everyone's schedules got so crazy, that we haven't played since that first session. We finally managed to get all the schedules lines up for next Thursday, so hopefully I'll have more of an update. I'm glad you're having fun DMing too, and it's funny the monkey wrench your players have been throwing into your campaign. Luckily my players haven't derailed anything yet, but I guess I jsut have to give it time

@Syro - Wow, thank you! That is some serious dedication to trawl through this thread - thanks for the kind words on my early attempts. My first models were probably around 2008 or so, so there are a few abominations that never made it onto the internet. I think most folks have a fairly critical view of their own modelling - it's hard sometime to not want to go back and touch things up as your skills improve, but that way lies madness. I saw some of the info on your thread about how the D&D campaign is going - your crew certainly utilise some out of the box thinking! Love the terrain you've built for it - really adds another level to the game.

@monkeytroll - A fair criticism, thanks! I've tried adding a few more highlights on leather and fabric on this gent, so hopefully it shows.

@Dr. H - Thank you!

@IGtR - Would love to see some results if you did. Thanks for the kind words!

@Skalk - No shame in that - I must have been averaging a model every few months in the last few years, so I'm not doing much better. Good to see you back!

Today's update is Pascha the Runt, leader of this pack. I hope you like her!

I'm still trying to get a decent tonal separation between the gear that the Maroques have produced themselves and the gear they've 'acquired' - greys, whites and blacks for stolen equipment to match some troopers I've already made, with greens, browns and drabs for their own equipment.

Here's a quick shot of the two of them together.

As always, C&C much appreciated. Hope everyone's having a good weekend!

Thanks Scarper, I'm glad you like my terrain. I figure, being for a starter set, it may be more re-usable than some other stuff I may make for D&D. It also might just be that I got my start as a war gamer so it's hard not to make terrain for the location the gaming is happening

I agree about trying to avoid going back to touch up old models, though I constantly feel the temptation too. Pascha the Runt looks good, especially when you zoom in on the picture to see the face details better. The way the image is compressed for the thumbnail, it looks a little like she has googly eyes at first glance, but not when you view the real image. These space knolls have been a lot of fun to see you creating them, how many do you plan to make? And as usual for you, i like how each is unique and full of character.

I actually like the first guy's low contrast clothing. It's not something you want on every model, but it certainly looks the part in a group. Especially a ragtag one where you would expect good variety between individuals. Really works well with the darker face mask, too,

@Syro - Thanks a lot for the kind words, much appreciated. I totally hadn't noticed the googly eyes, but now I can't unsee them At the moment I have five Maroques sculpted - I bought a single sprue of the gnolls off eBay as a test of concept more than anything else. They've been a lot of fun to play with and paint, but I think after these are done I'll move on to something different. I've got some ideas for an AI-sympathiser faction and a few more aliens to flesh out my setting.

@Geifer - Thank you! I'm really glad to hear you say that, as I quite liked how he turned out, but my colour scheme senses were telling me it was wrong. I hope you're right - it'll be interesting to see how they all look as a group a little further down the line.

Love the gnolls! Going to have to take a look at the rest of your blog in my spare time. Do you mind if I copy the gnoll idea at some point in the future?

@Geifer - Thank you! I'm really glad to hear you say that, as I quite liked how he turned out, but my colour scheme senses were telling me it was wrong. I hope you're right - it'll be interesting to see how they all look as a group a little further down the line.

I'm confident. The group shot of the two looks promising. If you strike a similarly good balance between individual and shared looks among the rest of the gnolls, I don't see what could go wrong.

This is probably not the best time to mention I have been frequently accused of having particularly bad taste, though, is it? Just as an aside.

That's excellent. Really see the contrast without it being detracting. Nicely done.

Thanks for all the comments, folks!

@Syro_ - Thanks again.

@JoshInJapan - I'm actually really glad you did, because your blog is one of the first places that I actually saw the gnolls painted up! You could always buy some more...?

@Rinkydink - Thanks a lot for the kind words! I work at a pretty slow pace, but it does mean I can put a little bit more thought into things. If you like seeing alien subraces, I'd suggest having a good look at Ynneadwraith's blog here - there's some amazing inspiring work in there, especially on the 'crow' race he's done most recently.

@Chaoticmind - Many thanks! Not at all, please go ahead. I'm certainly not the first person to have done them.

@Geifer - Cheers for the vote of confidence! I hope the model below first the bill.

@Skalk - Many thanks, man. That's much appreciated.

One more for the pile today -

Found this gent a bit of a pain to paint for some reason, but I'm pretty happy with how he came out. I've been trying to push my highlighting a little bit, as that's an area I feel I've been lacking in the past. As always, I'd love to hear any C&C, good or bad. Thanks for looking.
