Here is an early WIP render...
There are spots on the sides that could theoretically be used for sponsons. This was not my design but I like it enough that I will keep it as close to the picture above as possible. Some details will change to make casting and printing easier.

Those Sons of Chaos are great, and suitable for a huge variety of modern/futuristic urban/gritty/post-apocalyptic games.
The only downside is that they're so distinctive, most players will only want one set.

You could put them in baclavas, have the bottom part covered with neckerchiefs like bandits, helmets and sunglasses, bald heads (Happy and Juice), the DaNamian heads and other personality sets.. really there's a lot of options unless you're trying specifically to do the rest of the cast.

Also, arms with jury-rigged weapons would be cool. Like a spiked fire extinguisher or something that was made from found junk.

Hey Mad Robot, do you have or know of any pics of the Dragon breastplates with any sets of legs? They didn't have betls like a lot of the other torsos so I wasn't sure how they'd look with different leg options, or if there was a particular type of legs they were designed to work with. I went through a bunch of pages on the thread but didn't see anything except just the torsos.
Thank you!

@cuda1179: The turret is bigger than the LR. I believe the entire tank will be about the same width & slightly longer than an LR.

Turret looks good. Very Tiger-y. I imagine there will be gun options to represent most/all of the Russ weaponry?
Any thoughts on doing more vehicles for arty and/or APCs in the same vein?
45264
Post by: mad robot
@Blacksails: 5 weapon options in all, I'll post more previews as the release gets closer. I would like to do more vehicles, large and small, but that depends on how this first attempt sells. I can't see the sense of making a tank and then not making a different one to fight against it

Well, with this tank and the Maxmini KV2, maybe consider going American or British? I'm full up on klunky main battle tanks but if you were to do a sleeker one more in like with the CDF or Van Saars or closer to an Abrams, I might pick one up. APCs, Dropships/VTOLs, MRAP type stuff.. that's probably going to snag some of my cash pretty easily. I know you've gotta do whatever sells but I'm much more fond of Vietnam to Modern Era armor if you're able to push in that direction.. EDIT: If you send me one of those turrets I can check for ya

Yuk.. That think looks more like the Pig-Iron vehicle.. which isn't a bad thing but the only thing Abrams about it is the turret.. which seems like it was swiped off a 1/35 or bigger historical kit. It's too tall or not wide enough.

There IS sanity to the proportions - Compare any GW vehicle to a RL tank and you'd find the proportions ridiculous - I made the model to fit within a 10% margin, that I found reasonable for a "counts as" model - And yes, I took heavy inspiration from the Abrams, since my IG run a more modern/near future look as opposed to Grimdark-Lets-Cover-Everything-In-Skulls-And-Spikes-Tchno-Goth - Its not for everyone, but then it was never intended so...
...Sorry Steve for the hijack - love the Gideon design.

Is that one of the Juve bodies? I like the suit design a lot. It looks like a cross between a Dune movie style Stillsuit and a Crysis Nanosuit. I'm curious, how does the body look with your respirator heads? Are there still plans for a high tech helmet/mask to go with this body?

@Barzam: That's the adult body, more pics tomorrow. Are you talking about the beret heads w/ respirators? I'll try and throw that combo together but it may take a day or so. I want to do a small follow up wave of additional parts once I can get some feedback from people. The helmeted head to match the bodies will happen then, I estimate it will be another month or so.

It's the heroic thing throwing you off. It makes them look stumpy. If you use non-heroic heads on them it minimizes the effect a little.

Yeah, the beret heads with the respirators. A follow up wave sounds like a cool idea. If you are planning to use the Crysis helmet for inspiration, can I recommend that you consider the far superior multiplayer helmet designs over the single player one?

From the looks of things, the top and bottom left helmets actually aren't all that different. The main difference seems to be the visor area. You could probably use the same model and just change up the visor to do both types.

Post by: Slayer Dragonwing
I am really liking the look of the Vanderbilt Fighters. If I get a Necromunda game started again I will definitely keep them in mind.
Whether to go with the new suits or other figures, do you think it would be possible for Mad Robot to make a set of heads along the lines of the ODST helmets from the Halo series? I am having a surprisingly hard time finding anything remotely like them. The only ones I have seen are from Pig Iron, and they are closing up shop and have none left in stock.
45264
Post by: mad robot
@Barzam: Definitely a niche that needed to be addressed

Curious, will there be a ww1 style French leg set to go with those fine heads in Adrian helms? the way the French trench coat sets on the lets is rather unique I find. Torso's will still work, as will any arms. though I wonder if there is a bolt action styled las rifle inbound?

1. WW1-WW2 'stock and trigger' style laser/automatic rifle
2. Standing collar safari tunic and Safari puttee legs? as seen below

Post by: mad robot
@Lone Cat: I believe some puttee legs will be in order when we do our first regiment of desert troops this year. The other parts are already there; Fatigue Arms, Imperial Torsos 3.
I've been pondering some guns like that for a while but they would require new arm designs to accomidate the different grip. Not sure if that will happen or not.

That tends to go towards the fringe of a brand new category for us. My future efforts would more than likely be focused on additional vehicles first. Only then would I really consider some supplemental parts.

Hey folks, I finally have a...
GIDEON MBT UPDATE: Many of you have been asking about the Gideon Tank release so I thought I'd post a quick update. The model is very complex and after failing the first attempt to print it, I had to basically start over and redesign a big chunk of it.
Currently the parts are being printed and I am hoping to have it released by the end of April. I know I previously said Q1, but hey, crap happens
The pic below is still WIP but will give you something to look at
I'll be at Adepticon Saturday morning with a sample of what this baby will look like, come find me if you want to take a peak.

This design wasn't mine originally but I was such a fan of it, I haven't done a lot to alter it. An ambitious hobbyist could definitely fashion something that might work there but there is nothing being done as part of the kit. At least not right away.

The Gideon Tank will be priced at around $70. There will be a price reduction on three or more. The new arms are just the one style, shown in the picture I posted a few days ago.

Having an excess of Wargames Factory Great-cloak guys and wanting something else to do with them, I picked up some Ushanka and Kurgan helmet heads to make them cheaper not-Valhallans and using Cadian arms on them.

That is an excellent looking vehicle. I'm assuming its roughly the same footprint of a GW Leman Russ?
The only complaint I'd have is a lack of not-Plasma gun option, but I'm sure I could jury rig something up.
Definitely on my radar, especially if there's more in a similar vein to come, say for not-chimeras and not-basilisks or not-manticores.
Very cool though, resin looks super crisp.

We'll see what happens with the next designs. I invested a pant-load into the side pieces of the tank so I was hoping to use those as the base for building new/variant hulls.
Still a ways off, but if someone wants to get creative with a pencil, let's see some design ideas

You mean other vehicles, re-using the side bits from the Gideon (track and wheels and mudguards and hull sides)? An APC not-Chimera version would seem very doable, for starters. Could also be good for counts-as marine vehicles, e.g. a not-Vindicator.
45264
Post by: mad robot
@Clang: Correct, the middle hull is built like a shell that fits between the 2 sides. I can easily make changes to that, widen it or lengthen it, to make it into an APC or mobile artillery platform. As far as other uses...that is up to the end user

My experience is that most people think the Russ seems like it's far too small and the most common complaint is that the Russ is built like a wind up toy tank. Almost every guard player I know wants a larger, beefier tank which is why I'd assume that the Gideon is scaled a bit larger.
Did you not see the pictures of it showing the scale vs the crew when you bought it?

Definitely not taking him to the petting zoo . I think the myth started because in the olden days if you were caught stealing a sheep it was a death sentence, but if you were caught having relations with a sheep it was a roll of the eyes and a stern warning. So if the authorities caught you most men just dropped their pants and say they were caught before anything could happen.

And yeah, sounds right -- officers need to be kept alive and functioning! Thanks!
Threw this is with the other prints last night...hopefully this works
Now that looks like a seasoned command head!

I really like those gun carriages. Everything else is lovely but those really appeal to me.

Thanks for the feedback guys! Just to note, it's more of a HW platform but I do have a brewing idea for some real artillery

Does the hole on top happen to be the same size as the pegs on the bottom of the IG HW? That would be extraordinarily convenient..

Just stumbled onto these beautiful miniatures while poking around for ideas to restart my Guard army. You guys clearly make some great stuff. I don't suppose there's any word or possibly even photos of other vehicles in development? I really want to see the mad robot Chimera.

Thank you! I too would like to see and APC happen, perhaps sometime in 2017, not sure yet.

I've been waiting ages for someone to make robotic horses (a la Galaxy Rangers), but I'll take cyber camels in the meantime!

He needs to be called Joe......and have artificial lungs to go with the artificial throat....millenia of smoking repaired all grimdark like.

Try Copper Mine Miniatures who have a range of steampunk style horses.
Cyber camels though?
Now I want to throw together some counts as Rough Riders modelled as Kitchener's Camel Corps to go with my Praetorians.
Mad Robot, you know what to do!
Even if it is just a joke response to a light-hearted request in the thread, I love the "Coming Soon?".

reminds me of my stuffed toy camel from childhood! All my yes!
Will it be a Dromedary camel (1 hump, remember D for 1 hump) or a Bactrian camel (2 humps, B has 2 humps) ?

How about a Bacta camel, ready to dispense gooey health juice from its single large tank?

Yet another reason why I love DakkaDakka. I learn something new every day.
Plus manufacturers actually listen to the little guy, even though I'm completely bonkers.

Given the response, they will happen; just a matter of when. I might be able to start them before the end of the year, perhaps look for them early Q1 of 2017.

@MLaw: That's a preview of our first motorcycle, the first of many. No firm release date but it will be the first release of 2017.

lol, ok.. after those other pictures I was starting to worry!
Will the bikes also be available separately? I want some for riders but some for terrain and mounting on vehicles as well.
Between some of your heads and a few from other places I have an Expendables thing going and this is something I've been waiting for a bike for

Motorcycles would be nice. Nobody out there really makes IG scale motorcycles that are nice, simple, and utilitarian. While for IG specifically they're of limited use (basically just rough riders) a lot of games use bikes for human troopers. A kind of sci fi ish and rugged looking simple bike would be a cool option to see.
No idea how well it would sell, but it'd look cool.

Do you still make your 15mm Jump Troopers and Harook?
45264
Post by: mad robot
@MrM: It really is a classic battle rifle.
@Big H: Not sure, they will fit but whether they look good might be a bit subjective
@Maniac: No, I got out of the 15mm biz a while ago. The Harook were sold to Skullduggery Press last year.

MR- On Facebook you asked about Mordheim so I thougght I would reply here (posting is bugged for me on FB).
Females.. Hammers, Whips, Flails.. basically anything from Sisters of Sigmar.. they just don't really make that stuff in most places. Let alone modular form.
Males.. Arms holding grappling hooks is the first thing that comes to mind. I'll have to break out the book and see what else was a PITA. I have most of the books if you have any questions.. though I know there are places hosting PDFs too.
