I have been looking through your stuff quite a few times already by now and am very pleased to see that there is still new stuff coming from you. I have to say that your models are one of the main reasons my first army is going to be Khorne Deamonkin now, even after originally starting out with a few converted Nurgle models (anything but Chaos would not work, as I too love to convert the models ). I absolutely love the look of your Angron model and although a bit late I'm deeply in love with your converted Cataphractii!

Can't wait to see Angron finished and painted on his base, keep up the good work!

Cheers, guys!

@ Pneumo: That is very nice of you to say, mate! Thanks a lot! In other news, Khorne is pleased by your decision!

So with the ongoing nice weather, I decided that today was a great day to troop out my entire 40k chaos collection and take some new photos that I would like to share with you. Here goes:

So, first up, here's an army picture of Khorne's Eternal Hunt. This is what the army looked like earlier today:

The most noticeable addition to the army is the towering form of Gilgamesh, my converted Chaos Knight, now finally marching to war alongside the 4th assault company’s coterie of Daemon Engines:

Another part of the army that I am still tremendously happy with is the Master of the Hunt, Lord Captain Lorimar, surrounded by his Terminator bodyguard, Lorimar’s Fist. Take a look:

And there are many other parts of the army that make me happy whenever I look at them. For instance, this was just a happy accident, but I really love the way my true scale Khârn seems to get psyched-up for battle in the following picture:

I didn’t even stop with the World Eaters, but took photos of my entire 40k Chaos collection while I was at it! Next in line was my small detachment of Traitor Guard, known as “Urash’s Marauders”:

Now this certainly isn’t a big army by any stretch of the imagination. But then again, it’s a rather sizeable collection when you consider the fact that these guys were mainly built on a whim, back when there weren’t even any proper rules for using Traitor Guard (beyond the Vraksian Renegade rules put out by Forgeworld, that is). Anyway, the Marauders can provide some support to the 4th assault company when needed, plus most of the models can do double duty as cultists in a CSM army.

I’ll really have to return to these guys at some point: Looking at them again makes me realise how happy I am with my chaotic Tempestus Scions:

I still have an unpainted icon bearer for this squad — maybe I should paint him next? Anyway, it’s a fun little army project that can complement my World Eaters but can also work on its own — at least from a visual perspective

But there’s more: Over the years, I have dipped my toes into several smaller chaotic warbands and sub-factions, and each of them could be expanded into a stand-alone warband or detachment at some point.

For instance, here are my Blood Wolves, created to fill the role of Chaos Space Marines with the Mark of Khorne in my World Eaters army:

Joras Turnpelt and his damned brethren surely warrant some more attention — in fact, I have quite a few models already built for a whole squad of Blood Wolves. Ahh, so much unpainted plastic, and so little time (and, let’s face it, even less discipline).

There’s a squad of Plague Marines big enough to actually use in games, if the 4th assault company should ever require their scrofulous assistance:

Let’s not forget Warsmith Greimolt Sturm of the Iron Warriors and his first two soldiers, either. Iron Within, Iron Without!

Once again, these are merely the first models for a small kill team of Iron Warriors that will definitely be finished one of these days! Scout’s honour!

Back in 2012, when the then-brand-new Codex CSM was released, I celebrated the occasion by building and painting one Astartes for each of the four cult legions, and I am still pretty happy with the models. Take a look:

I tried to capture the visual quintessence of each of the four legions aligned with a major chaos power, and I am still pretty pleased with the outcome. From left to right: Malchius Blight of the Death Guard, Gades Elphenor of the Emperor’s Children, Suresh Asp of the Thousand Sons and Targon Kel of the World Eaters.

When these were posted on my blog, each of the models was actually accompanied by a little...well, poem sounds pretty pompous, but they were little poems. Let me share them inside the spoiler tags, for those of you who are interested:

Spoiler:
Brother Malchius Blight, of the Death Guard

He chuckles at the pinpricks of their fire
Like gnats, for all the harm they do
He cuts them open then, his axe
Pitted and scarred, but oh so sharp.
Their death is quick and merciful.
Unlike his own, millennia in the making.

Oh, how he envies them.

***

Captain Gades Elphenor, of the Emperor’s Children

A dance of death
A line of crimson
The sweet caress of pain
What does it matter
Who lives, who dies?
When all is rapture
And pleasure alike
Show me more!

***

Magister Suresh Asp, of the Thousand Sons

On and on they come, the fools.
According to their leaders’ plans.
Oblivious to the hidden patterns:
Schemes within schemes, great Tzeentch’s design,
In which they all are naught but pawns

He laughs, except for when he wakes
From dreams of falling silver spires,
The taste of ashes in his mouth.
(No man can know their master’s plan)

And all is dust

***

Huntmaster Targon Kel, of the World Eaters Traitor Legion

While the battle lasts, that’s all there is.
That, and their lord’s unending thirst.
But off the battlefield, he thinks
Of them; The Carrion Emperor’s dogs
His soul’s ablaze with hatred then
He will not be a slave, a dog.
But a hunter of men
And a taker of skulls

Blood for the Blood God!
And skulls for his throne!

Oh, and last -but very definitely not least – is PDH’s wonderful version of Lord Zhufor the Impaler, given to me as a fantastic gift a while ago:

So yeah, that’s the painted part of my 40k chaos collection. I just love chaos in all of its colours (especially in red, though), and I actually see the many projects I have already started – or partially finished – as great little or small hobby endeavours to get back to whenever I feel like it. Anyway, so much for my collection. I hope you’ve enjoyed these latest pictures and I would love to hear any feedback you might have! As always, let me know what you think!

I've recently been going back through your thread from the very beginning (again ) and it's incredible to see all the work you've done over the last few year amount to such an impressive collection! And think of the grey and WIP miniatures waiting to be added to the collection

A spectacle to truly be proud of!

I found your Angron conversion to be quite inspiring so.... I'm "borrowing" the idea of using the slaughter priest for a primarch or significantly larger than average marine conversion.

Hey, just wanted to add my 2 cents! I just found your blog the other week and I'm enjoying going through your archives and seeing the Hunt grow! There's so much creativity with the lore and characterization in each of your models that I can't help but be inspired. I've never been a Khorne fan, but your take of the fallen noble warriors fighting to retain their minds and cohesion has made me see the followers of the Blood God in a whole new light. The Traitor Army is fantastic as well and the Knight... holy cow!

Everything is so cohesive without being too matchy and the conversions (and the INQ28 stuff!) has just blown me away. It's really inspired me to start back in on my CSM guys and push my comfort zone to follow in your very big footsteps!

Keep it up, all of it!

Hey everyone, here's a small update: I's been quite a while since I last painted a new model for my World Eaters, so to ease myself back into the flow of things, I decided to paint something quick and fun to get a taste for all that red again

Back when Age of Sigmar was released, I instantly felt that the huge icon of Khorne carried by that Bloodsecrator of Khorne (what a briliiantly imbecilic name, btw) was far too huge for any infantry model, but would work for a Knight or Titan -- well, I went back and used it to built an optional back banner for Gilgamesh, which I am currently painting. Take a look:

Possibly my favourite part is how the icon slots neatly into that hole in the middle of the top carapace, due to the foot I built using a bit from an old plastic model truck kit (I am getting quite a bit of mileage out of those leftovers, come to think of it). So I can add the banner or take it off again at will -- maybe it could even work as some kind of extra equipment?! Or maybe "Gil" (*teehee*) just puts it on whenever he wants to feel extra Khornate?

Anyway, I've put on the highlights earlier tonight -- maybe I'll get around to taking a better picture tomorrow.

Huh. I was thinking more along the lines of Sacristans mounting the icon before special battles or something, but I cannot be held accountable for your dirty imagination, of course

Anyway, here are some pictures of Gilgamesh with the finished banner. The weather isn't great today, so the lighting in the pictures isn't ideal, but you'll still be able to make out the details, I believe:

Post by: KrautScientist

Cheers, guys!

@ King Pariah: Haha, fair enough -- it should be "The Sound of Bloodshed", though: Can you imagine that? It would be one hell of a musical number

@ corpuschain: Basically, yes. The paintjob is entirely based on Vallejo's Halcòn Milenario Turquoise: First I mix it with a small drop of black and use the resulting colour to paint the entire blade. Then the edges get picked out with the original colour, then more and more white is mixed in to add a slight gradient towards the tip. And that's it, really.

Khorne's Eternal Hunt - The World Eaters' 4th assault company: I LIVE. I HUNGER. @ 2016/05/26 14:10:07

Post by: KrautScientist

So here's another update on Skulltaker: I added another round of highlights and tidied up the last rough edges. Most of the changes probably won't be all that visible to you, but they do make a difference up close. So I am basically calling the model itself finished now:

This is actually my first Khornate daemon - or even my first daemon, period - and I daresay it's a pretty convincing premiere, all things considered. One thing I am really happy with is the skin, and I need to give credit where credit is due: I painted this part of the model faithfully following the first part of Duncan Rhodes' two-part video series on how to paint a Bloodthirster. It's a really effective recipe, and it worked just as well here - using somewhat smaller brushes, admittedly

So with the model itself now finished, I am currently working on a suitable base for it. Some experimentation is involved. Stay tuned for more

Until then, as always, let me know what you think!

Cheers for the feedback, guys!

Brother Payne is exactly right about the blue, by the way: It serves both as a contrast and as a visual link to my World Eaters. Oh, and yes, the model definitely still needed a base, so that's what I worked on earlier today.

So here's my first completed model for this year's ETL, base and all: Calvarax the Exalted, my counts as Skulltaker:

Under normal circumstances, I am not a big fan of skull bases, but it did feel appropriate to use on, just this once

I am really very happy with the model, to be honest! It

may not look like it, but I really moved beyond my comfort zone with this piece, especially when it comes to the recipe for the skin! And while the red used on the model are quite different from my World Eaters, I think there are enough touches (the brass, the turquoise, the general look of the bases) to link this model to my army:

Nice. The extra height from the base makes him that little bit more imposing and I think adds to the model's dynamicness too (that's totally not a word but I have no idea what the noun for dynamic is haha).

What's next on the cards? Look forward to whatever it is as always !

Thanks, mate! To be honest, I initially wasn't really sold on the extra height while building the base, but I do think it has really managed to enhance the model for the reasons you mention -- btw, I think "dynamism" may be the work you were looking for -- don't ask me, though, as I am not a native speaker

Next up will be the rest of my first ETL vow, so it's either the 4th assault company's apothecary or a counts as Contemptor converted from a Kastelan robot:

More news on this as it develops...

Cheers, mate!

Just as planned, I am currently working on the second model for my ETL vow: Apothecary Dumah, Chooser of the Slain, Primus Medicae of the World Eaters' 4th assault company (and also a stand-in for Fabius Bile, should the need arise). This is what he looked like before I started painting him:

And this is what he looks like now, mostly finished:

Unfortunately, the lighting in the pictures eats up quite a few of the subtler red higlights, making the armour look flatter than it actually is -- you'll just have to give me the benefit of the doubt here

Another effect that I am fairly happy with does show up in the pictures, though: I tried to suggest the impression of liquid sloshing around in those vials on Dumah's belt and inside the huge syringe on his narthecium gauntlet:

As always, let me know what you think!

Ay! I must say I really like the way his skin tone has come out. It might just be that his face is positioned next to black rather than the usual red, but the grey tones seem more accentuated on this guy - I like it

You're right about the red not showing up too well but I'll take you're word for it and those vials came out brilliantly!

Thanks a lot, mate!

So daylight was already on its way out by the time I took the following pictures, but I was just so happy to have mostly finished my next ETL model that I simply couldn't wait. So here's the model, finished except maybe for a tiny touchup here and there:

Apothecary Dumah, Chooser of the Slain, Primus Medica of the World Eaters‘ 4th assault company

The presence of Lord Dumah could be one of the most important reasons for the ability of the 4th to still function as a fairly coherent fighting force, for it is due to his art that the company still has access to a way of replenishing its ranks instead of being left to slowly bleed out over the millennia: Apothecaries are a rare enough breed in the traitor legions, and especially so among the World Eaters, whose Apothecaries have succumbed to the bite of the nails for the most part, abandoning their former battlefield role in favour of bloodshed and insanity.

During the times of the Great Crusade, Dumah served directly under First Apothecary Fabrikus, and he was among those tasked with duplicating the archaic and little-understood neural implants Angron had been outfitted with on Nuceria. While working on the task of implanting an ever increasing part of the legion with those “Butcher’s Nails”, Dumah became aware of their debilitating nature and began in-depth research into the possibility of mitigating the negative effects of the implants.
Yet there was little tolerance for this kind of experimentation within the legion, as the Red Angel himself regarded any attempt at tempering with the function of the nails as a way of compromising their effectiveness and purity. So this line of research was quickly abandoned by all but a few Apothecaries, while the legion fell deeper and deeper into madness and bloodlust.

Ten millennia later, Dumah still serves as the 4th assault company’s Primus Medicae and has earned the epithet “Chooser of the Slain”, as his task is twofold: As a dark, Grim Reaper-like figure, he moves among the fallen and chooses which geneseed to harvest from fallen World Eaters and which to leave to rot, because it is too twisted and curdled by corruption to be safely used for implantation any longer. And he looks for those fallen enemies whose prowess in battle and martial honour have made them eligible for being inducted into the XII legion – either by being granted the kiss of the nails or, in very rare cases, a full conversion to an Astartes in the first place.

When off the battlefield, Dumah still continues his experiments with the aim of countering the nails’ degrading effects, and he feels that he is coming closer to a possible breakthrough with every generation of new implants and with every harvested progenoid. The only question is if there will still be enough of the company left to profit from his eventual success…

As always, let me know what you think!

Love the back story! Think it fits perfectly into the Eternal Hunt's fluff. I like the idea that he not only brings new Astartes into the folds of the 4th company, but gives non-astartes warriors the Butcher's Nail; gives you room for including all kinds of warriors into you army from an infinitely wide range of backgrounds.

I must say I chuckled when I read he's known as the Chooser of the Slain, as all I could think of was him being lined up next to a bunch of Space Wolf Rune Priests' pet birds (that go by the same name) and the PDF officer asking the civilian "Now which Chooser of the Slain was it that you saw tearing your homeworld to shreds?"

Excellent work as always!

Cheers for the positive feedback, guys!

@ Brother Payne: Well I'll be... that's the second time GW's authors have used the same idea as me then (first the Huntmasters and now this). Oh well...

So another short update regarding Apothecary Dumah: One thing that I need to mention is that Dumah actually uses a colour recipe that's fairly different from the rest of my army: Ever since my last reserves of Blood Red have run out, I was faced with the task of coming up with a new recipe, and I think I have finally suceeded with this latest model. The downside, if you want to call it that, is that the new look does differ from the old one to some degree:

The Terminator Lord in the middle uses my original recipe, based on the now OOP Blood Red. The Lheorvine Ukris conversion on the right uses a somewhat more experimental version of the recipe I used for the Apothecary: It's slightly closer to the original colour than the red on Dumah, admittedly, but it's slightly more messy and less elegant as well, so I think I may ultimately be sticking to the new recipe, after all. The difference in reds is something I think I can learn to live with

On a related note, having finished Dumah means that I've already completed two of the three models that form my first ETL vow:

So that's two down, one to go

Side by side you really can tell the difference in reds but I actually really like the vibrancy of the new recipe. It seems a little less orange too which again I like; I think we see to many "orangy" reds in the hobby. (Then again that may all just be the lighting ). What colour did you end up using as a substitute? I too am running low on my Blood Red

Khorne's Eternal Hunt - The World Eaters' 4th assault company: I LIVE. I HUNGER. @ 2016/06/03 12:25:42

Post by: KrautScientist

Thanks, mate!

Yeah, I kinda like the vibrancy of the new red myself, although adding some measure of depth to the red remains a challenge -- maybe even moreso than before

Anyway, the recupe for te red parts of the armour looks like this:

- Chaos black undercoat
- basecoat with Khorne Red
- wash with Army Painter Strong Tone
- add a layer of Mephiston Red
- add some highlights with a 50:50 mix of Mephiston Red and Evil Sunz Scarlet
- glaze with Bloodletter
- selectively apply some Druchii Violet into the recesses
- add some final highlights with almost pure Evil Sunz Scarlet

And it's a nice enough recipe, really. It just results in a look that's different from my earlier models, as you can see above.

Thanks a lot, guys!

I have a little "bonus model" for you, so to speak: Back when GW released the Mephiston Red spray, I got a can of it straight away, because I thought it might become a very valuable tool for painting my World Eaters and my Chaos Knight. Unfortunately, the stuff performed rather terribly, and I ended up with a test model that was a slog to paint:

Everything still looked pretty nice until after spraying, with a nice red undercoat across the whole model. But when I began to pick out the details in different colours, I realised that the undercoat had a somewhat strange texture that made the colours on top behave strangely, turning the whole painting progress into an exercise in frustration:

Now this is about as far as I got with the model:

But when the colour actually started rubbing off in places, revealing the bright red undercoat, I basically abandoned the whole project as a failure -- and the half-finished model kept sitting on a sideboard, daring me to finish it at some point.

Well, with the recent success of finally having painted Apothecary Dumah, I thought "What the heck?" and gave the model another try: I repainted the armour with the new red recipe and persevered, because I really rather like this particular conversion and didn't want to abandon it completely, and here's what I ended up with:

Now this is hardly my best work - and it couldn't possibly be, what with the damage left by the original undercoat - but this guy is at least presentable enough now to take his place amongst the rank and file, and I am pretty happy that I've managed to finish the paintjob, after all!

As always, let me know what you think!

Haha, yeah, not gonna happen here in Germany, mate The best I've come up with so far is a brand of floor polish that seems to work well enough. But even then, it would have dissolved the GS work on the right hand in this instance, so stripping the colour of the model wasn't an option.

Plus there's also in fact that I am lazy enough as is, so the prospect of actually having to paint a model twice is not exactly a fun idea to me

In a way, this picture really serves as a short visual history of my last five years in the hobby, as the first of these guys must have been built shortly after I got back into the hobby in late 2010/early 2011, while the most recent one was finally finished this week.

Cheers for the kind words, everyone!

@ STG: As I am fairly terrible at thinking up suitable names, I keep an ever-growing Word doc, and whenever I come across a name that might work, I chuck it in there with all the others. There are also all kinds of RPG name generators online that can help. For World Eaters, I generally make sure the names are suitably blunt and guttural, with that certain bit of chaotic "je ne sais quoi"

@ KernelTerror: Cheers, mate! The one thing I am actually the most happy about is that none of the models sticks out as particularly ancient or anything

@ Brother Payne januine & Boss Salvage: Thanks a lot, guys!

@ Ashenwyte: That jump pack is a conversion bit from MaxMini.eu

So I don't want to spam this thread with old content, but here's another picture from the same shooting, albeit taken against a diffferent background. I wanted to share it because it rguably does a much better job of showing off the colours as they are looking in real life:

Cheers, guys!

So here's another small update for you: A lack of Chaos Black spray currently prevents me from tackling my next ETL model. However, in order to at least keep my painting momentum going, I quickly started to paint a model for my Traitor Guard that I have wanted to paint for quite a while now -- and it had the advantage of already being undercoated as well Take a look:

This guy is the icon bearer for my converted, chaotic Tempestus Scions, and I am pretty pleased with the conversion, to be honest. He's still missing a bit of detail work (and a suitably heretical design on that banner of his), but you get the idea.

Thanks a lot, guys!

So a short while later, here's the finished model:

I decided to recreate an effect that I had used on my Traitor basilisk, painting the banner to look like flayed skin and then using Tamiya Clear Red to dab on chaotic icons. The general idea of using incomplete circles like that originally came from Dave Taylor's Blood Pact, possibly the coolest Traitor Guard army in existence.

And this means I now have a full squad of these guys, too. Take a look:

This squad has taken quite a while to come together, but I am actually really, really happy with the result: The squad has a certain look of uniformity about it, while also being feral and vicious (and, well, chaotic) enough to read as an archenemy unit.

Anyway, as always, let me know what you think!

They suck

Ok seriously, I really like the mix of red, blue, grey (bases) and bronze/metal you use. Especially the blue is just striking. The squad looks great as a unit.

Sometimes conversions like the head on the right cultist and the plasma gun look a bit out of place or too big but when you show the painted squad they blend in nicely because of the selected colours. It works really well.

This Golden Demon '93 army is one of my alltime favourite depictions of Worldeaters

Hey guys,

so here's a small addendum to that plastic Angron conversion I shared with you fairly recently: I was incredibly lucky enough to be sent a nearly complete Angron model by fellow hobbyist Adam (of Between the Bolter And Me ): The model is merely missing a few bitz and bobs, and it's certainly a great feeling to be in the possession of the Lord of the Red Sands now As an unexpected bonus, this has also allowed me to take some comparison pictures featuring both FW's stock Angron and my own plastic version. Take a look:

Now it's not an easy comparison to make, given the stock Angron's very crouched pose, but I think the FW model would be a bit taller, if both were to stand up straight. However, the difference in height is not nearly as extreme as one might have expected, while the difference in bulk is easy enough to explain away by the FW version being fully armoured. So all in all, I am fairly confident that my plastic conversion is actually tall enough to work as a Primarch, after all!

Cheers for all the positive feedback, guys! I really appreciate it! And I also have something new to share with you:

To be perfectly honest, I've spent most of yesterday watching the news of Brexit hollow-eyed and with a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach -- what an utterly awful day! But after moping about for a couple of hours, I decided I might as well try to transform my sadness into something more productive and started working on my converted Kastelan.

One funny thing is that the model basically looked almost like a standard Kastelan during painting, because I had taken off virtually all of the armour plates to have an easier time painting the thing:

But they came back on quickly enough, as a motivation fueled by a particularly mixture of sadness and madness saw me complete the model in record time. Now be advised that the following photos certainly arent't brilliant, on account of the perpetual rain over here and the overall gloomy weather, but anyway: My Counts As Contemptor (I yet have to settle on a snappy name):

And since this model formed the final missing part of my first vow in this year's ETL event over at The Bolter & Chainsword, this also means that my first vow has finally been finished:

And there's more: While I originally didn't want to risk a second vow, there is one particular model that I really want to see finished, and the ETL just happens to provide the perfect incentive. It'smy bestial Daemon Prince conversion here:

The black undercoat and dark brown paint are remnants of an ill-fated previous attempt at painting this beast. I'll be painting right over them Wish me luck!

So yeah, that's it for today -- as always, let me know what you think!

Cheers, mate!

The almighty rain has finally let up a bit, allowing me to take some slightly better photos of the counts as Contemptor, so here's another look at him:

I am still looking for a suitable name for this guy, by the way, so please feel free to let me hear your ideas! I'll be needing both the pattern designation for the machine as well as the name of this particular model, so I'd love to hear your suggestions! Please refrain from going Age of Sigmar levels of cheesy on me, though

Here's another photo of my first vinished vow:

That's a cool additional 500 points for Khorne's Eternal Hunt

But I also have something new to show you: It seems Khorne is indeed pleased with my recent completion, as I have been making some massive progress with that bestial Daemon Prince. Take a look at him:

Once again, Duncan Rhode's video series about how to paint the Bloodthirster has been an invaluable asset to me, as I've used the exact same recipe on the Daemon Prince's skin (just like on my Skulltaker earlier), and it has been a blast to paint the skin! The oily metal emerging from the arms and legs, though? Not so much -- I am sure happy to be finished with that part!

I've also given some extra care to the mouth area, due to the fact that this part will be much harder to reach once the ears/horns have been glued to the head:

As always, let me know what you think!

Cheers, mate! That is a very cool idea for a pattern name indeed! Thanks a bunch!

In the meantime, I have been pouring quite a bit of work into painting that Daemon Prince, and I was surprised how much I actually enjoyed painting that big lump of plastic! I do of course realise that the model is a bit of an acquired taste, as there is a misshapen, overmuscled look to the whole thing. Let me just clarify though that his was very much an intended effect: The idea for this model was to show how a World Eater, at the height of his madness and bloodlust, maybe wouldn't be transformed into a darkly angelic figure, but into a feral daemonic beast. The idea grew from the scene in Betrayer where Angron ascends to daemonhood (and you get the idea that he becomes an even bigger monster during the process) and a throwaway line from Codex Chaos Space Marines where it's stated that to become a Daemon Prince effectively means eternal servitude, and not even death offers an escape any longer. Hence the bestial look of the model.

Anyway, here he is: My converted Daemon Prince, dubbed the "Avatar of the Hunt" for now:

By far the trickiest question has been to figure out what to do with the armour plates: The bronze trim was a no-brainer, but I didn't want to go for predominantly black armour in order to avoid the Black Legion look. I also tried to paint them red (my old red recupe, even), but the result just lacked contrast when compared to the skin. And then I realised that all bronze armour plates might end up looking very Khornate: Now I have this image in the back of my head of the red parts of the armour turning into blood and running off during the Daemn Prince's ascension, or boiling away as the daemonic brass underneath becomes visible. And in any case, since this guy is basically a just for fun project, I might as well try some new stuff, right?

Like I said, I wanted some visual elements hinting at the Daemon Prince's Astartes roots, in spite of his animalistic look, hence the shoulder pads, the remains of the Astartes backpack on the shoulders and the sockets appearing on the Daemon Prince's body where he used to be connected to his power armour. As you can see, I painted the patterns etched into the shoulder pads with Tamiya Clear Red -- I didn't want to risk a silly looking OSL effect here, and the blood seemed like a nice fit

In fact, there are even more hints as to his origins, such as the Triumph Rope scar, a remnant of his life as a World Eater:

And the chains dangling from the Daemon's mane of hair are actually his Butcher's Nails implants, transfigured into the shackles they always were...

Speaking of the creature's head, here's a closer look at the face, an area I am especially happy with:

I believe the colours and recipes used on the Daemon Prince and Skulltaker conversions will facture rather heavily into any additional daemons that may be in the cards for my army -- for instance, after two successful test runs, you can expect the recipe for the skin to appear again on my Bloodthirster.

But anyway: For now, the finished model also marks the completion of my second ETL vow. Yay!

As always, let me know what you think!

I wasn't sure about this guy's composition at first but the paint job is excellent, and I think he's growing on me Running with the boiled blood idea, might be good to add a little blood here and there in the recesses of the brass? I think this would really add both to the fluff, and to create some more contrast on the armour.

It also hadn't really clicked as to how big this guy is until the comparison shot with Skulltaker there nice work!

Looks brilliant. I really dig the idea and how it shines through in the finished mini.

I think the armour plates would look good in black...perhaps many glazes of black over the recessed areas. At the moment there really isn't enough contrast.

Very nice stuff yet again. Did you think of painting the plates in the Heresy-era World Eaters colors of white and blue? Perhaps (if you haven't thought of that mini's background yet) he may have ascended shortly after the heresy, before he had changed his armor's color. Anyway, fantastic mini, looking forward to see what's next

Thanks for the positive feedback about the Daemon Prince, guys! I will admit that this has been a bit of an improvised project from the start, which makes it all the cooler now that you seem to like the model! As for the armour plates, I will say that using the Pre Heresy World Eaters colours never really seemed like an option to me, mostly because I'd like to keep a visual distinction between my 30k and 40k World Eaters. Adding some definition by adding a darker wash of black, brown or maybe even Smoky Ink to the recesses of the armour plates, on the other hand, definitely seems like an option worth looking at -- by and large, I have to admit I am pretty happy with the overall paintjob, but I agree that the armour plates might profit from slightly more depth.

In the meantime, however, I have already thrown myself headlong into the next project (and also the next ETL vow, as it were). Because, ultimately, both the Daemon Prince and the Skulltaker conversions, in addition to being fun models in their own right, were also test runs for this guy:

I have owned that Bloodthirster for quite a while now, and it is one of the models I really want to see finished. As you can see, I have already made some serious progress in just a few days. In fact, Duncan Rhodes' painting tutorial saved the day once again: It already worked really well on the two previous models, but it's just fantastic when used on the model it was actually intended for

I am actually even closer now to finishing the model, having started to paint the armour plates earlier today -- time to get dressed

As always, let me know what you think!

I like it but, I would not use the rectangle base IMO. Since everything is going round or oval. The nub on the right hand ? Trying to figure out if you're painting that separately or have something planned ?

Cheers for the feedback, guys!

@ Sammoth: The finished model will of course be on an oval base. I just attached the Bloodthirster to that rectangle base so I have something to hold on to during the painting process.

@ Pekel: Mate, what can I say: Every once in a while, even I encounter a model that I think is pretty much perfect If this is any consolation to you, however, I do have another Bloodthirster sitting in a box, and that one is going to see some fairly major conversions. Don't hold your breath, though

@ WarbossDakka: Cheers, mate! My thoughts, exactly

So, work on the Bloodthirster continues, although progress no longer happens in leaps and bounds, but rather in smaller increments: The Bloodthirster is one of those models where you cover lots of ground early on and can then spend an eternity on all those intricate details. That being said, I think the main body is just about finished now:

Now there's a detail that I would really like to hear your thoughts on: My original plan was to use the full set of armour plates that come with the kit, i.e. a breastplate, the two upper-thigh plates, a set of vambraces, a skull-shaped shoulder pad and the two smaller tilting plates that attach to either side of the breastplate. But now that I have added the breastplate and thigh-armour, I find myself reluctant to cover up more of the red skin: I really like the look of the bare shoulders and the part where you can just glimpse the musculature of the daemon beneath the breastplate, and I am beginning to feel like adding more of the armour would actually diminish the coolness of the model -- I'd love to hear your thoughts on this matter!

As always, let me know what you think!

Speaking from personal experience, the shoulder guards look pretty daft anyway. They stick out really far considering they're meant to be armour.

I'd leave 'em off, makes the model look so much better.

I love how crisp you got the skin to be, it's just right for daemon-skin.

I like the skin tone alone. I do however like the armor pieces as well. Maybe a way to put them on so you can take them off if you wanted to. Don't think that would be possible but, you can look into it. IMO If you just go plain skin you might want to do more highlights on the skins, veins, wing membrane, horns etc. It's not that your paint is bad I am just suggesting making it pop a little more if you don't add the armor plates. Something to break up the contrast a bit.

Oh wow he's HUUUGE!!

Loving the progress so far - the skin looks great and I like the armour plates black with gold/brass accents - think that works really well. Regarding the addition of armour plates I thinkhe looks a little bottom heavy atm. If I were you I think I'd be adding one shoulder guard (idk how many the kit comes with), preferable on the left shoulder, and the just leaving the vambraces off. I think that would help give more balance to the model.

As it is I think the skin worked out incredibly well, and look forward to seeing what you do with the rest of the model. ( And indeed the mystery right hand )

Thanks for the feedback, guys!

@ Sammoth: Maybe the latest pictures don't get this across all that well, but every part of the skin (every single vein, in fact) has been highlighted, and there is actually quite a bit of pop to the skin area -- that's the whole reason why I was considering leaving off the armour.

After much deliberation, I have decided against the shoulder pad: I mocked it up in place, and it ended up covering too much of the skin, just as I had suspected it might. This is basically a first for me, as I am a huge fan of extra detail and additional armour, but just this once, less indeed seems to be more. I might still add the vambraces at a later point, but for now I think we can call the model itself finished:

Let me just say that painting that whip was yet another exercise in patience, pretty much on par with the wings

So with the model now finished, that just leaves the base to be constructed and painted - a project that should keep me occupied until the weekend With a bit of luck, I'll be able to post the finished piece later this week!

Until then, as always, let me know what you think!

@ Jehan-reznor: "Little demon"??? You cheeky git!

I originally expected that Bloodthirster base to take me at least until the weekend, but then I couldn't leave he model alone, and so, after a frantic building session that lasted until late at night, here's the final update regarding the Bloodthirster. I give you...

Ghor'Lash'Kharganath, the Gorelord, the Ever-Wrathful, Chosen Hunter of Khorne

And here's a closer look at the finished base:

There were several elements I absolutely wanted to incorporate. First and foremost, a symbol of the Imperium's shattered power. I think the shield fills that role rather nicely

In a bit of an in-joke, the bease also features another helmet from the Golden Legion, my DIY Astartes Chapter created for INQ28:

And finally, I really liked the idea of the earth itself reacting to the daemon's malign presence where his ironshod hooves touched the ground -- hence the bloody bone spikes jutting from the rock. And in the middle of it all, the Bloodthirster is ascending from a pit of boiling blood on a pillar of fire:

And finally, another closeup of the axe:

Since Brother Payne asked, here's how I painted this part:

For the silver metallics:
- basecoat with GW Leadbelcher
- a heavy wash with a mix of Army Painter Dark Tone & Vallejo Smoky Ink
- another was with Army painter Dark Tone
- and finally, I carefully highlighted the blade using GW Mithril Silver

For the bronze metallics

- basecoat with Vallejo Tinny Tin
- wash with Army Painter Strong Tone
- drybrush with GW Dwarf Bronze

There, hope this helps!

So, anyway, I am not going to mince words here: I am incredibly happy with the finished model! From a purely technical standpoint, this is very probably my finest paintjob to date. Oh yeah, and this also means another thing: This also marks the completion of my third ETL vow -- Huzzah!

Cheers, guys!

@ Sammoth: Uhh, off the top of my head, the heads I used on the base are:

- a standard Space Marine helmet with some added damage
- a horned skull from the plastic Warriors of Chaos
- a damaged skull from the old WFB plastic Skeletons
- a slightly smaller skull whose origins escape me right now -- I think I've probably cut it from some chaos model or other, but I cannot be sure.

On a related note, I snapped a quick picture of everything I have painted for this ETL:

For the sake of completeness, I have also included the two "bonus models" I painted beyond my vows while I had to wait for the opportunity to pick up some new Chaos Black spray: one rank and file World Eater and an icon bearer for my Traitor Guard. All of these provide a nice enough collections of shapes and sizes, that should give you a good idea of the various models' scale.

Thanks a lot, guys! I am really, really happy with the Bloodthirster, which makes me extra glad that you seem to like him as well!

As for the model besing mostly unconverted, I believe I will make amends for that with my next project, because I have already thrown myself into the next conversion: With all the successful painting recently, I think I have earned the right to just convert something for a change, right?

Anyway, here's what I started with:

Huh? What's that supposed to be...?

The plot thickens...

As you will already have guessed, what we are looking at here is a conversion of Angron in his ascended Daemon Primarch form. I have wanted to do this conversion for quite a while no, especially since I received a second Bloodthirster a while ago and immediately set it aside for this, and I think it's finally time to go for it

To give credit where credit is due, I have to mention my two main sources for this project: One is the artwork of Daemon Primarch Angron by Alex Boyd:

While the art does provide quite a lot of inspiration, the painting style is also loose enough that several details end up looking fairly ambiguous -- which is excellent, because it allows for slightly different interpretations!

The other source I have been drawing lots of inspiration from is Reg's absolutely amazing Bloodthirster-based Angron. The conversion is so awesome that I cannot possibly hope to match it, but then the guy does already have about a dozen Angron conversions under his belt, while I am still learning At the same time, I also want to diverge from his model in a few areas, trying to put my own spin on things.

So here's what the model looks like now:

There's still quite a bit of detail and cleanup work left to be done, but the photos show you the amount and placement of armour I am planning for the model, as well as how it all goes together when the wings are in place.

As always, let me know what you think!

Haha, that made me laugh!

"'Tis but a flesh wound!"

I have completed another round of detail work on Angron, so strap yourselves in for a bit of a picture extravaganza

Nothing new and exciting to see so far, although the left hand and axe have finally been glued to the rest of the model, and I have also added another small cable or two to the head.

Now here's where it gets a little more interesting:

As you can see, I have added some skulls and chains towards the back of Angron's mane. It's a fairly subtle effect, but one that should provide a bit od contrast on the painted model. I have also wedged some pieces of chain in between all the cables and fleshy tendrils on his head.

Here's a look at Angron's back:

With the ornate crest and cable mane taking up the upper part of the back, I wasn't able to use the bit of hair that normally goes there on the stock Bloodthirster, and besides, a crest of hair like that didn't really suit Angron anyway. So I thought I'd incorporate a bit of an in-joke: My other plastic Angron conversion was based on the Slaughterpriest and had that gross, exposed spine, so I thought it would be cool to duplicate that effect on the Daemon version as well, although it still needs to be blended in a bit better.

One thing that I really like is the depth to the head and neck, with layers and layers of cabling visible:

It's really rather gross, but also pretty appropriate, wouldn't you agree?

And finally, the poor Ultramarine is also finished now:

I have given him a broken sword (the other half will be added to the base) and added some shards of his left shoulder pad where Angron's fist grips his arm.

As for the gore factor, while I don't want this part to be too cartoony or graphic, I've added the tip of a spine and one coiled rope of intestine hanging from his belly:

Most of the rest will be achieved by painting, although I am not ruling out an UHU string or two

"It didn't say anything about stuff like this in the Codex Astartes!"

As always, let me know what you think!

I especially like the visual coherence between this one and the unarmored Angron the twisted spine gives. And I pitty that poor loyalist soul (why do we Ultras always have to take the beating though ) One small question though: where are the shoulder pads from?

Cheers for the comments, guys!

@ Gordon Shumway: Indeed, the Marine's lower half - or some of it, at least, will be a part of the base. I am actually thinking about adding some more fallen Astartes to the base, to show how a Daemon Primarch is quite a handful, even for a squad of the Emperor's Finest

@ Legio Ultra: Regarding the Marine, it was a toss-up between using Ultramarines and Grey Knights. The smurfs won in the end, because the model will arguably work both in the 30k and 40k timelines that way. I also made sure the fallen Marine resembled Cato Sicarius a bit, just for fun

The shoulder pads are shields -- from PuppetsWar, I believe, although I am not 100% sure , as they were sent to me as part of a larger bitz drop by a fellow hobbyist.

Thanks for the kind words, guys!

There will be more work on the Daemon Primarch conversion before long, but for now, I had one final vow for the ETL to get out of the way:

Now I didn’t harbour any ambitions to contribute a huge amount of points to the ETL, as there are some other people who have that particular corner covered much better than I ever could. But somehow I did want to read the 1,000 points mark — and as it happens, I realised that I had one last model on my unpainted pile that perfectly fit the bill:

Some of you may remember my first “Thamier-pattern” Obliterator, based on some excellent, custom parts provided courtesy of my fellow hobbyist Thamier (hence the name). Those parts allowed me to finally come up with an excellent Obliterator design that fit my army as well as the outline of what an Obliterator should look like. Back when Thamier sent me those bitz, he was awesome enough to include enough parts for two Obliterators. But I only ever managed to finish one of them and just couldn’t seem to settle on a final configuration for the second one.

For some reason, however, this changed after finishing my Bloodthirster recently — something must have been shaken loose in the back of my head, and suddenly I knew exactly how to build this guy, easy as that. A short while later, I had the finished conversion in my hands:

And as luck would have it, a single Obliterator can count as a squad and is worth exactly 70 points — just the amount I was still missing! So I decided to finish my contribution in this event by making a fourth and (final) vow. I was really looking forward to finally owning two finished Obliterators of this size and design!

Besides, it was just a single model, right? So what could possibly go wrong?

Unfortunately, the last couple of days have been the hottest days of the year so far in northwestern Germany, with temperatures of more than 30 degrees Celsius outside. Hardly the perfect weather to be painting miniatures — quite the opposite, actually!

However, I realised that losing momentum was the biggest danger for me, so I soldiered through the paintjob. And I managed to finish the Obliterator yesterday. Take a look:

And here’s a closer look at the weapon arms, spliced together from many, many different bits and kits:

Now it has been pointed out to me by Thousand Eyes and Augustus b’Raass that the armour trim needs some cleanup work here and there — particularly on the leg greaves! And I happily agree — painting this guy in the sweltering heat – and in a slightly darkened room, no less – certainly didn’t do the exactness of my paintjob any favours. But I think those problems should be easy enough to solve with some minor touchups when it’s a bit colder, and I am still reasonably happy with this guy: Now I have two massive juggernauts that can lay down quite a bit of fire between them. YAY!

And with the points of all the models I have managed to finish not at exactly 1,000 points, I think this is also the perfect moment to consider my contribution to this year’s ETL concluded: I’ve already done three vows more than I had originally planned, and while it has been a blast, I think it’s important to end things on a high note. I also don’t want to fail again, like last year!

But even so, I couldn’t be any happier with my performance: Granted, 1,000 points isn’t all that much when compared to the amounts of stuff some of the crazier contributors have come up with, but then I think I have really managed to complete some rather cool models — some of this stuff is arguably my finest work to date:

Another thing that pleases me immensely is that each model is one I have wanted to get painted for quite a while. And I even managed to paint two extra models during the event, bringing the overall number of finished models to...eight. How auspicious! I hope Khorne is pleased:

As always, let me know what you think!

Nice work on the Obliterator, although as a Blood Angel in the ETL I can't condone such speedy painting and single handedly accounting for 1k of points

Seriously though, nice work.

So with my part in this year's ETL now concluded, I was free to return to my Angron conversion for another round of fine tuning. The changes and additions are geting smaller and smaller, which is a sign of the conversion rapidly approaching completion! Here's what the model looks like right now:

So, what did I do?

Some trophies and skulls were added to Angron's belt area, in order to bulk him out a little and to make his armour look less like the standard Bloodthirster set. I didn't want to go overboard with this however, so I just added a trophy here and a lenght of chain there:

You may also have spotted some tweaks to Angron's face: I added some small horns to his cheeks to approximate the spiky growths appearing there in the Alex Boyd artwork. As an added bonus, the spikes also give some tecture and definition to the GS'ed area on the sides of the head.

And I also added some skulls to his wings, as this kind of trophy is mentioned in ADB's depicition of Angron in "The Emperor's Gift":

Beyond these new tweaks, I don't really see much that I want to add or take away -- although I am always happy to hear your suggestions! I am considering another cable/tendril or two on the head, but I have run out of GS for now, so this will have to wait.

As for the model's paintjob, one important thing will be to figure out the right colour recipe for the skin: GW's Bloodthirster recipe is quite fantastic, of course, but I think I want to achieve a slightly brighter red on Angron, so I think I'll be tweaking the recipe a bit, replacing Khorne Red with Mephiston Red, for instance. Fortunately enough, I have just the perfet test model for the tweaked recipe: One of the old Bloodletters that I received as part of a bitz drop a while ago:

Granted, these guys have all kinds of problems from a modern perspective, but I remember liking them immensely back when they came out, and painting one for fun (and in order to figure out the right skin tones for Angron) should be a nice little throwback to those innocent times The sword had been snipped off when I received the model, and even though it is in my possession, I decided to replace it with one of the modern Hellblades, as the old swords are arguably the models' weakest point (well, that and the anatomically dubious bare asses...).

Surprisingly enough, I had a blast painting this guy, so I've already managed to finish him:

With the exception of a single colour, these models share the exact same palette. And look how much of a difference it makes regarding their respective skin tones!

I am also 100% sure now that this is going to be my skin recipe for Angron as well: The red is quite deep and luxurious, but also a bit brighter and has more pop than the red I have used on my Bloodthirster and Skulltaker. Here's a comparison picture that shows the difference really well:

With the exception of a single colour, these models share the exact same palette. And look how much of a difference it makes regarding their respective skin tones!

As always, let me know what you think!

Angron is shaping up to be truly amazing.

One thing though. Is it possible to twist the head to the left a bit more on the dismembered ultramarine?

I feel that he should look directly at Angron and now he's kinda looking out in the distance. Surely, a raging deamon-primarch in the process of ripping you apart should command the full attention of even the staunchest son of Ultramar.

Thanks a lot for the kind words, everyone! I really appreciate it!

@ Zywus: I have gone back and forth over the particular angle of the Marine's head, and while there's only so much give in the pose to begin with, I think I have come up with the angle I like most: The Marine isn't totally out of the game yet, which is why he is looking towards Angron and probably contemplating one last stab, but he's also suffering from the consequences ofa horrendous injury, even for an Astartes, so he is probably groggy and not wholly focused any more. I think the angle of the head as is conveys these two things, which is why I think i'll be leaving it like that.

So here's another - likely final - round of minor tweaks to my Daemon Primarch Angron conversion: I was able to pick up some new hobby supplies in Hanover yesterday, and so I broke out the GS earlier today for some final touchups. I was prepared to add much more cables to Angron's head, but he did feel "finished" a pretty short way in, actually. So here's what the finished head looks like now:

Regarding the forehead, I decided to add some small - ambiguously metallic - rivets to Angron's brow as another callback to the Alex Boyd depiction of him.

I also used some GS to add some more detail around his spine and make the whole area look extra icky:

So all that's missing is another layer of carefully applied Liquid GS, and then the Lord of the Twelfth Legion might actually be ready for his paintjob...

As always, let me know what you think!

Again, thanks for all the kind words, guys!

Like I said, all it took to finish the conversion work at this point was to add another, carefully applied layer of Liquid GS over the various converted areas, especially the back. And with that, the Angron conversion was finished:

Although not visible in the above pictures, some GS has been added to the curved inside of the Space marine torso piece to resemble the Astartes' torn flesh and muscle -- I think it's going to look pretty convincing once painted.

And here's the finished spine:

I think the Liquid GS has done a pretty good job of blending the sculpted areas and the rest of the model's back together.

I am really happy with the way Angron's face has come out, even if the Lord of the Twelfth Legion seems to be suffering from a slightly misaligned jaw...

And here's another look at the tangle of cables, tendrils and chains on Angron's head:

And finally, a comparison picture with Angron next to my first Bloodthirster: Of course there's no complete disguising the fact that the base model is identical, but I think that I've still done a fairly good job of making Angron look different in silhouette and general direction:

But wait, there's more: In the meantime, painting has already begun:

Look, everyone! It's Angron in speedoes! What a Dreamboat!

Only the skin has been painted so far, but the pictures will at least give you a good idea about the skin tone. There's always a bit of anticipation when painting a converted area, because while we all tend to give conversions a bit of leeway while everything's still grey and green, it all needs to blend together when actually painted. And I have to say I am really rather happy with the whole head and neck area:

With the skin now mostly finished, the model has begun to resemble the artwork it was based on even more closely, which is quite a nice surprise!

In other news, I have received a wonderful gift courtesy of fellow hobbyist Brother Jim: A Khornate Marine converted by him in his trademark style:

There was really just one detail I wanted to change: Tthe bare classic berzerker head Jim included with the model is certainly one of my favourites, but it already appears multiple times across my army, and these days I am trying to avoid repeating the same head too often. So I tried several options I had already set aside for this occasion, but in the end, I realised that nothing short of a custom helmet would do, so I made this:

As always, let me know what you think!

Thanks a lot for the enthusiastic feedback, everyone! I am certainly glad to hear that you seem to like Angron, as I am currently in love with the model, if I do say so myself. I've never worked on a model where the mere act of picking it up already makes me feel good, and it's a great feeling alright!

@ Azazelx & Dark Soldier: I imagine the helmet was even intended as a trophy, as that is very much in keeping with Brother Jim's style, plus the guy also has a terminator helmet on top of his backpack. In any case, I'll be painting the helmet in the colours of a different Traitor Legion, just to make it obvious that it's a trophy rather than the Marine's alternate helmet.

@ JustaerinAtTheWall: I don't really want to change much about the model, as that would feel pretty disrespectful towards BrotherJim, to be honest. Maybe a small danglimg trophy/chaos symbol will do the trick? But the claw itself will definitely stay like that.

@ Winter: While I see where you're coming from, I've spent ages poring over that head now, and it's frankly precisely as (non-)vertical as I want it to be I also got rid of any horns on purpose, as I really wanted to make Angron's head shape look unlike that of a Bloodthirster, and I wanted the Nails to be very prominent and define the entire shape of the head.

So here are some updates from the last two painting sessions:

My normal approach would have been to paint the eyes bright blue, but seeing how I want Angron to be less of a regular part of my army, and more of a "special guest star", so to speak, I chose a different colour this time around. The orange also works really well for the smouldering ember look, and that in turn supports the look of rage, wouldn't you agree?

I had some time for painting today, so I went back and coloured in all the leather straps, piercings and general smaller doodads on the body, cleaned up the wing membranes, stuff like that:

This was basically painting by numbers, as I've done it all before on the first Bloodthirster, but it was still an important step in that it adds a lot of depth and detail to the model and serves as preparation for the more interesting (and challenging) parts to come!

As always, let me know what you think!

@ Boss Salvage: Haha, yeah, half a dozen times or so

The standard recipe goes like this:

- basecoat with Vallejo Tinny Tin
- wash with Army Painter Strong Tone
- drybrush with GW Dwarf Bronze

Now for Angron's armour, the recipe was supplemented with a few additional steps and became:

- basecoat with Vallejo Tinny Tin
- wash with a mix of Army Painter Strong Tone and Vallejo Smokey Ink (to create even deeper shadows)
- drybrush with GW Dwarf Bronze
- drybrush with a 2:1 mix of GW Dwarf Bronze and GW Mithril Silver
- drybrush very lightly with GW Mithril Silver

So here's another round of updates: All of the armour plates and trophies on the belt are now in place. There's also something that I need your help with, but we'll be getting to that in a minute. First, pictures:

So here's the thing I would love to hear your feedback on: I am not perfectly sure about those kneepads. They always seemed like a no-brainer during the conversion process, adding some additional bulk to the model and further differentiating it from the stock Bloodthirster, but now it seems to me like they actually make the model look slightly too clunky:

So what do you think -- should I keep them or lose them (they are just tacked in place for now)?

As always, your input is much appreciated!

In the meantime, I have finally managed to paint that unfortunate Ultramarine:

Aw, man, look at him, all clean and pristine -- alas, it was not to last...

And here's a closer look at the finished Astartes:

I also tried my best to take pictures of the gory parts:

I think part of what is making them 'clunky' is that there's nothing on the model indicating how they're attached. That's an issue that gets run into a lot with these models- there's no connectivity bits, and so things look, well, tacked on or slapped in place. If you were to have some scarred flesh between them and the legs, or straps going around behind the knees, or bolts showing them attached otherwise, they'd not look as clunky. But, of course, that would mean doing a little sanding and modelling , which would screw up the paint job on the knees.

I doubt you'll do that, which is a bit of a pity, since I think, like you said, that the knee armour does add a lot of extra distinction, and does a lot to make him more grand and have more presence here.

Looking awesome man. I actually feel like the knee plates would work better as part of the shoulder guards, covering the 'armpit' space between the pauldron and the breastplate. Not sure if his face would get in the way though.

If you feel okay with adding straps or something to indicate them being held in place, I think they'd look great. But now that you mention them as is, I can't stop noticing how dorky they seem to be just having to appearance of being just there. Pity too because the knee pads themselves are quite nice.

I think they look cool, but have to agree about the lack of straps. While “because demon” is a valid excuse for why they are stuck there, the fact that the thigh plates look to have straps undermine that.

I do like their inclusion though. He’s not just a demon made from warp stuff. He is an ascended from a primearch, to whom armor was a part of his identity.

You could go either way and make it work.

I was going to comment on the lack of a highlight color, but the Ultramarine does a very good job there. Helps offset the otherwise two tone model. The axe might also do that once it gets done.

Thanks for the well-considered feedback, everyone! I agree that some straps would have made the kneepads seem more plausible, but seeing how they always seemed like an optional part of the model for me, to be added or left regarding whichever looked better, creating straps and then maybe not having anything to add to them would have been a bit of a gamble -- and then I'm just a lazy bum like that.

I am not really sure the presence of straps would change anything about the clunkiness, however, because it wouldn't really change anything about the shape. And just because something's plausible doesn't mean it cannot kill the flow of a model

But to be honest, I am slowly growing used to the kneepads as is -- haven't entirely made my mind up yet, though, so I guess they'll stay tacked in place like that.

I will say that I like the way there's a bit of Angron's bare skin showing between his pauldrons and breastplate, though: I think that's something that's really important for the contrast and colour balance on the model, so that area will definitely stay that way.

So anyway, with the Ultramarine out of the way, there was really no excuse to put off painting the axe any longer, so that's what I did today. Which means that, apart from some highlights and minor cleanup work, the model itself is just about finished now:

As for the axe itself, the strangely organic shape of the blade would have made painting it in simple metals seem like a bit of a cheap cop-out, so I went for something partially organic and disturbing, trying to duplicate the look of ElDiablo's/Midian's excellent Bloodthirster axe:

As you can see, I also added some blood to the axe, mostly because it made sense, what with Angron clearly just having cut apart an Astartes... I believe that'll be it for blood effects on the model, though. There might be some more blood on the base...

So yeah, I do have to say that I am actually really, really happy with this guy -- in case you hadn't noticed

So while you guys are probably tired of seeing the model, I would of course love to hear your feedback! As always, let me know what you think!

Thanks a lot, guys! I really appreciate it!

@ LeCacty: No problem, mate! Here's my reasoning behind the axe:

It's true that, canonically, Daemon Angron wields the Black Sword, a weapon forged for him during the Heresy by Vel Kheredar. It's the weapon that appears on his ancient Epic model, and it also appear in the recent fluff.

BUT the one illustration of Daemon Primarch Angron (by Alex Boyd) shows him with what looks like a daemonic version of the axe Angron has in most of the old Heresy artwork by Wayne England (and also in the first illustration of Angron by John Blanche), with the characteristic eagle wing behind the blade. And because I love the old JB/ Wayne England art and also wanted to base my conversion on the aforementioned Alex Boyd piece, an axe it was. Well, that and that fact that I just couldn't think of a decent way to come up with a suitably awesome and unique sword -- Biohazard is currently doing really well on that account, though.

Oh, and the Black Blade actually gets shattered in "The Emperor's Gift", so all bets are off anyway

You know what would be awesome for a Khornate sword, sometime? A completely plain blade. The most basic of basic cruciform swords. But a solid, otherworldly red. (so paint it in a completely different style to the rest of the model)

Because Khorne is the god of battle and war as well as slaughter and blood and skulls, and if you're showing the purest essence of war and combat wouldn't be something covered in fangs and eyeballs, but rather an incredibly archetypical sword that conveys, well, the 'essence' of 'sword'.

I don't it would have felt as Khornate if it wasn't an axe IMO. Also, I don't mind the kneepads actually, even without straps. However, if they were more curved to fit the knee better or angled at the same angle as the shins, it would look less "tacked on". Nice model either way.

Cheers, for the feedback, guys!

@ Anvildude: While that is certainly an interesting idea, I think it might clash rather horribly with the hyper-detailed GW style of doing models: I totally get your idea, but a completely plain sword on a model this detailed would just seem unfinished, in my opinion. We have to take into account the look and feel GW have built for this universe, and it tells us that the weapons wielded by massive daemons have to be either equally massive and spiky or crazily mutated and disgusting.

The one approach that I could see working would be an upscaled Bloodletter Helblade: relatively simple, yet jagged enough to read as a daemonweapon. I remember Wade Pryce doing an Angron conversion back in the day, using one of the three-up Bloodletter swords, and it worked fabulously -- only that none of us mere mortals would ever get access to that particular bit

On a mostly unrelated note, those remarks about a completely plain sword kinda remind me of the ending of Indiana Jones III; where the correct solution was not to choose the most ostentatious cup but the real holy grail, a comparatively crude and simple carpenter's cup.

The stock Bloodthirster I painted for the ETL got quite a base, with lots of customisation and special effects, which really raised the bar for me and means I will need to come up with something pretty nifty to beat that. There's also the fact that I like the idea of this Angron model not really being locked into the 30k or 40k timeframe, but rather serving as a connecting piece between the 30k and 40k incarnations of my World Eaters: After all, Angron ascended during the mid-Heresy, so he would basically look like this as early as M31, right? And he'd still be looking like this in M41, give or take a few scars and skull trophies

But if I really go through with this, I need a base that would work with both versions of the army -- which is complicated, because my 30k and 40k models use different styles of basing (and consciously so, I might add). So here's that crazy idea I was talking about:

How about I sidestep the issue by not putting Angron on a standard base, but by basing him on this piece of terrain from the Honoured Imperium kit:

Could there be anything more fitting for the bestial might of a Daemon Primarch than standing (well, floating) triumphant on a shattered Imperial aquila of that size? The piece would also have enough space for the missing half of that poor Astartes, plus maybe one or two of his buddies. It could be painted in suitably neutral colours that would work with both versions of my army (although there's not really a 30k army yet, but you get what I mean). And while it would turn my Angron into more of a mini-diorama of sorts, I think the model really warrants the extra bit of oomph. Here's a very primitive mockup:

Of course I do realise that there are quite a few problems about this idea: The terrain piece is quite a bit bigger than the regular base, and also pretty unhandy -- but then, it's not like this guy will be getting huge amounts of game time or anything. And maybe it's just a foolish idea to begin with. So please let me hear your feedback on this matter!

You could always mount a large, thick piece (or two, to keep orientation consistent) of wire into his feet/contact point, and then create two bases - one for each army. The HI piece looks great, but it's also a bit way too big..

Alternately on the HI styled there, smash up an UM rhino or other vehicle with crossover-ish enough markings for both eras and use that as the base!

I think the broken Aquila is ok in size but it'll need more elements added to it so it's more of a diorama than just a base. Few more dead, dying and dismembered U-Smurfs for instance

I’m a little fuzzy on the 30k lore these days, but I thought the Aquila was rare? I know marines for the most part did not wear it. Was it still in use for buildings etc. that would generate rubble big enough for a demon prince to stand on?

While I do thing he would look good on it, the gamer in me would prefer to see something a little more appropriate for table-top use. But the Rule of Cool covers a lot of slack, so he could hit the battlefield on pretty much anything and I’d just roll with it.

I'm all for large architectural rubble as diorama stuff, but for bases I've always liked things that look like they could belong on any table.

For this guy, for example, it would be awesome to have him mounted on a base that makes it look as though he's corrupting the ground where he walks- maybe have like, bloody mud oozing up around his feet and around the edge (in a sort of teardrop to show advancement) with the rest of the base filled with shiny red blood rippling out from the hoofs.

Cheers, guys!

@ Nevelon: It was stated in the older fluff that the Emperor's Children were the only Astartes legion to be allowed to bear the aquila, but if I remember correctly, this has mostly been retconned into the two-headed aquila being free for all to use, while the EC are the only ones (beside the Custodians) to wear the Palatine aquila, that is the one-headed eagle that's the Emperor's personal heraldic device.

And anyway, I think architectural aquila elements are something altogether different, anyway

@ Anvildude: Yeah, but I already did that with my first Bloodthirster, with the ground basically erupting in bloodied bone spikes where his hooves touched the ground, so I think I need something different this time around.

Folks over at the Bolter & Chainsword, particularly Biohazard, provided some excellent ideas regarding the base, suggesting to try and create something resembling the bases from the Horus Heresy character series, were a smaller base will actually slot fairly seamlessly into a larger piece.

Now my first thought was: "Nah, that would be sooo much work!". But then I tried to get my head wrapped around it, and I started actually doing it, and it will be a lot of extra work, but it's also going to look awesome. I hope.

So here's where I am right now, having used my trusty, cheap-o carpet knife from the DIY superstore to carefully saw through that aquila -- at the cost of several small blisters, I might add -- the things we do for true art, eh?

Of course I had to select a slice of the aquila that would make sense if seen on its own, and due to the size of the piece, it was either a full wing or the double head, so I chose to have one complete wing and one head, which I think works pretty well. Here's the base with the pieces taken apart a bit:

If I manage to position the smaller piece on the base exactly like this, both pieces can basically slot together seamlessly (there might be a very small gap between both parts, but I can live with that, especially since the aquila is already looking pretty broken up as is). But what is even better is that I'll end up with a piece that also looks suitably dramatic on its own:

However, this is the moment where the Miliput has to come out, as I will need quite a bit of the stuff to sculpt a new "cliff-face" style of outer wall for the hollow part of the base that shows up rather hideously at the moment:

The truly complicated part will be to make sure the new additions don't mess up the way the two pieces of the aquila fit together, though -- oh boy...

But I think it can be done, and - more importantly - it can be made to look amazing! As for Angron's position on the base, I think he'll be positioned on the tip of the wing, facing towards the centre of the aquila, as everything else would just kind of defeat the whole exercise. I've made a shoddy Photoshop mockup:

This also means that the smaller base only really has room for the lower half of that unfortunate Ultramarine -- however, I am free to add one or two additional Astartes on the big aquila piece, showing their last stand against Angron.

As always, let me know what you think!

Some great food for thought, guys! Just to avoid disappointment, though: Keep in mind that the objective here is to base Angron (who is and will remain the undisputed star of the show) and not to build a massively awesome FW-style duel scene, especially with an enemy of equal footing with Angron. Some poor Ultramarines? Sure. But certainly not Dreadnought or Primarch. Sorry

You implying that “some poor Ultramarines” are not match for a demon primarch?

You should have two Ultras, preferable behind some sort of cover. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush...

How about a Chrono-Gladiator? It would add an element of irony and be slightly cruel for old Angron in a way, killing a fellow gladiator.

Or maybe just a regular Guardsman or Imperial Preacher, eyes closed, holding up an Aquilla.

A few Ultramarine and human corpses/body parts to tie it all together, would give the impression that Angron has just charged into some giant defence line, with the Ultras going down first as they were naturally at the front, just leaving some poor schmuck at the back as the last to go. It would be a good metaphor perhaps: the Aquilla crushed under hoof, Mankind's best defenders ripped apart without effort and a lowly human left alone to face the might of the daemon primarch.

Cheers, guys!

Regarding Daemon Primarch Angron's base, there are basically two factors that need to be taken into consideration: One, whatever gets put on there must not overshadow the Primarch himself, which is why a bigger squad of models (or something bigger, like a Dreadnought or another Primarch or what have you) is not going to happen. Two, what I really like about the model so far is how it theoretically works as both a 30k and 40k representation of Angron in his ascended form (and I have carefully chosen the armour parts for the poor Ultramarine held in his grasp so they could work for both 30k and 40k as well). The flipside of this that I cannot use anything that would clearly "date" the model (so no Guardsmen and/or Solar Auxilia, and no Imperial Preacher either). Right now, I think that two or three additional Ultramarines, probably fallen, sound like a good plan, but we will see.

I am putting off the base until later this week when I'll finally be getting access to some mulliput, courtesy of my friend Annie. Until then, I really needed to do something less involved, so I finally made some slight touchups and adjustments to some of my 30k World Eaters.

So first up are some guys that you might already have seen a while back, a Plasma Gunner and Triarius for my slowly growing collection of tactical veterans:

The Plasma Gunner remains unchanged, but I've tweaked the helmet on the Triarius and like him much better now.

I've also finally managed to put the finishing touches on my 30k WE Contemptor, and I am really happy with the finished model:

Quite a bit of cleanup on this guy, including the drilling of barrels and exhausts. Plus I finally sorted out that brutal looking Iron Halo around his head cavity. And maybe my favourite small addition to the model: The stubby fingers of the BaC plastic Dread were carefully lenghtened using fingers from a 40k Furioso Dreadnought:

I also had to convert a new character. Now here's Huntmaster Bardolf, one of the first Huntmasters I originally built for Khorne's Eternal Hunt:

He was one of the first more involved conversions I did after getting back into the hobby a couple of years back, and while the conversion does show its age a bit, I am still enormously fond of this guy, mostly because he was my go-to Chaos Lord in all those smallish 500 and 750 points games when I re-learned 40k. As a consequence, his various victories and losses really turned him into a character rather than a mere playing piece, and helped me to figure out what I wanted Khorne's Eternal Hunt to feel like. So I thought it would be fun to build a younger, uncorrupted version of Bardolf, from his time as a fresh-faced veteran sergeant during the Heresy:

The idea here was to take several elements from the 40k model (the pose, the weapons, and a couple of bitz) and incorporate them into the 30k version as well, while still making him seem like a more restrained 30k character (and also a sergeant and not yet a powerful commander type):

And since even the World Eaters still occasionally used slightly more conservative Astartes warfare tactics back then, I also made sure to add a standard bolter in addition to the axes

I am pretty happy with the finished model, and here's a comparison shot showing Bardolf now and then:

And in a really neat development, a recent bitz drop from fellow hobbyist Helega has finally allowed me to replace the missing cape on my Forgeworld Angron:

A slightly tweaked version of the chain cape from the WFB Chaos Lord on Manticore seems like a pretty ideal replacement for Angron’s standard cape — the conversion isn’t quite finished yet, but I do think I am on the right track.

In closing, I thought it might be fun to take some pictures of all the 30k World Eaters I have assembled so far. I was a bit disquieted, however, by the fact that something that I keep insisting won't turn into an army has begun to look suspiciously like...an army:

And here's a closer look at the various officers so far:

From left to right, Tech-Marine Deracin, Lord Captain Baltus Lorimar, Primarch Angron (DUH!), an as-of-yet unnamed Praetor and Primus Medicae Dumah.

As always, let me know what you think!

@: Zywus: The head on the plasma gunner is from an older FW Raven Guard conversion kit (I think. At least the head used to have a RG legion badge over one ear...), and the Triarius' head is a Skullcrusher helmet with the bunny ears cut off and a horsehair crest from a Betrayal at Calth plastic Mk IV sergeant added on top.

As for the chain cloak, yeah, it's from the WFB Manticore Lord, and it does occasionally pop ip on the bitz sites, although I wasn lucky enough to get mine in a direct trade.

Yesterday I met with my good friend Annie for a little hobby session: Annie worked on painting here crazy awesome, pirate-based Blood Bowl team. I would be remiss not to share a snapshot of it:

Meanwhile, I worked on several smaller projects starting with another go at Angron's base:

I started where I left off last time:

I plugged all the holes in the base using Miliput, and added some structure by pressing some cork into the putty after it had begun to dry, stamping a rocky texture onto the surface:

Next up is a lot of cleanup work, some cork, sand and slate, and some skulls.

I also mostly finisheda base I've wanted to build for ages:

Creating that Space Marine with the open ribcage felt strangely cathartic, for some weird reason that probably doesn't say anthing good about me...

And here's the future owner of the base, my plastic Giant Flesh Hound:

Just a note with the milliput- if you want it to look really realistic like stone, I'd suggest taking an X-acto after it's dried, and shaving a couple flat spots into it. When stone cracks, it tends to shear in places, as well as having the rough bits.

If it's meant to be concrete, though, that should be a fine texture.

Cheers for the feedback, guys!

@ Anvildude: Good point about the stone texture! Given the Imperium of Man's scale and utter disregard for its individual subjects, I suspect many of its monuments would be mass-produced poured concrete creations, following successful templates. Which is why it might just be okay to keep the texture as is, I suspect...?

@ evildrcheese: Hmm, let me see: The flesh hound is basically a Dragon Ogre lower body combined with the neck portion of a plastic Daemon Prince, the head from a plastic Bloodthirster and a vestigial pair of Vargheist wings -- yup, that about covers it

So, with degrees well over 30 degrees Celsius outside, the last few days didn't exactly lend themselves to outstanding acts of craftsmanship. I've still managed to mostly finish the extra detail on Angron's base. Take a look:

The first step was to cover the empty parts of the base in my usual mix of cork, slate and sand and seal it all with PVA glue and plastic glue. The effect was also used to blend the seams between the different areas and materials together.

I also added some skulls to the front of the base, both to make the area look more interesting and also because, well, Khorne! (DUH!)

Two spiky poles were used to add even more of a chaos feel to the base -- I am planning to add a beaten up (yet still upright) Ultramaerines vexilla to the other side of the base (the bigger part), so there will be an underlying theme of chaos creeping across the base towards the Imperium's defenders.

And I've also built the lower half of the poor Ultramarines officer clutched by Angron:

Some gap filling ist still needed, but I am pretty happy with the pose, and if you look closely, you can even make out a piece of spine emerging from the lower back...

I'll also be using some Liquid GS to add a bit of texture to the flat stony areas. But I am already pretty happy with the overall look of the base:

I have also been working on another model that I am really happy with right now: A 30k World Eaters Chaplain:

The stock Kurtha Sedd model didn't do much for me, so I used the legs for my Sergeant Bardolf conversion, swapped in some new legs, took quite a bit of inspiration from Poom's chaplain and added a touch or two of my own. I really liked Fabricator General's take on the World Eaters' chaplains serving as "Chain Dogs", the grim overseers of the fighting pits, and I tried to make my chaplain reflect that concept.

As always, let me know what you think!

Hmm, it was a bit that just appeared in my bitzbox, but I do think it's a piece from one of the plastic undead wolves from the Vampire Counts, and it's normally used on - you guessed it - the hounds' rib cage

Cheers, guys!

So today it's finally time for a rather sizeable update about Angron's base -- and also about adding the model to the base, but we'll be getting there in a minute

Since we last saw the base, I made a couple of important steps: The left size of the whole, the part Angron will actually be standing on, was completed:

The green you see scattered all over the base is a thin coat of Liquid GS, applied according to a suggestion by fellow hobbyist Augustus b'Raass, in order to give the stone a more interesting and believable texture.

Then the base was undercoated black:

As for the right side of the aquila, I gave it the same detailing treatment, adding stuff and finally settling on two additional Ultramarines. Here's the finished ensemble:

The fallen Marine in the middle of the base came from Forgeworld's Angron model, which I think is a cool little shout out. The guy on the right is acting in true XIII Legion fashion, taking cover and shooting at the charging Daemon-Primarch in a desperate, yet disciplined, last stand:

"Theoretical: There's a massive, angry red Daemon...thing charging right at me. Practical: Best shoot the hell out of it!"

Tell you what, I almost find myself rooting for the little guy

With all of the conversion work and extra texture on Angron's display based finished, I headed outside to add black undercoat to the right side of the base as well. And then both parts were sprayed with Army Painter Uniform Grey (a bit more carefully this time around):

Now at first glance it might seem as though we were back to square one (the unpainted plastic), but upon closer examination, the grey works really well with the Liquid GS-based texture to create a slightly sandy, stony look on the aquila parts. There's also a slight shading effect on the areas that aren't part of the shattered aquila, as a consequence of focusing the grey spray on the actual stone.

I decided to focus on Angron's actual base first, because I really needed a milestone achievement somewhere in there, so here's the finished left part of the aquila base:

Regarding the blood, I was ridiculously careful not to overdo it, aiming for as much blood as necessary and as little as I could get away with The blood was created using Tamiya Clear Red (although BftBG works exactly the same, as far as I know), and I did start by mixing in a tiny blood of black paint for the first coat of blood, then adding pure Clear Red on top. I think the combination gives the bloody areas a bigger amount of depth and texture.

So with the base out of the way as well, all that remained was to add the angry red daemon beast on top, so that's what I did

Actually getting the model to stick to the base was, once again, an exercise in frustration. But as you can see, things worked out in the end

Here's a closer look at the base:

Two more "special effects" were added to the base: One is an additional spot of blood directly below the Ultramarine's torso (for obvious reasons). The other effect is something I had never tried before, and I am rather happy with the outcome: I wanted the stone in the direct vincinity of Angron's right foot (and the flames below it) to look as though it was heating up due to the Primarch's daemonic presence. The effect was achieved by carefully building up several layers of Bloodletter glaze:

And with the model and base now combined, our brave little smurf finally gets reunited with his lower half. Well, sort of...

I know I am probably boring you to tears by saying this, but I am still so incredibly happy with Angron's head and face...

To wind things up (for now, that is), here's a comparison shot showing Angron next to my "regular" Bloodthirster model:

Both models' skin colour actually differ far more in real life than is obvious from looking at the picture. However, I do think I've done a pretty good job of surpassing the base on the Bloodthirster and of making both models look pretty different, in spite of being built from the same stock model.

And here's a hint of things to come (not this weekend, though, so please don't ask )

Phew, this has been quite a ride, indeed! As always, let me know what you think! And if you like my version of daemon-Primarch Angron, feel free to give the pictures some votes in the Gallery section!

I think you'll want to add a little more blood to the base- consider that Angron is moving, and even on top of that, he's probably swinging the top half of the Ultramarine, pulling him from the lower torso- there's going to be at least a little blood spatter trail going from the legs to the spot- and the spot, I'm not sure, should be a spot at all, but maybe just a little bit heavier blood spatter. Possibly even have a little spatter further on, in the path that the torso is probably swinging.

That should help add to the sense of movement on the base.

First of all, thank you all so much for the very enthusiastic feedback! I will admit that this does feel like one of my best models, if not the best one, which makes it all the more awesome that you guys seem to like it so much!

@ Anvildude: Cheers, mate! Everything you're saying about the base makes sense, and yet I doubt I'll be adding any more blood, mostly because it's such an easy effect to overdo, and I feel the base is already one drop of blood away from being OTT

@ JustaerinAtTheWall: You might want to take a closer look at the bigger base in one of the last pictures, mate Besides, I've carefully considered how many Marines to add to both parts of the base, and three all in all seemes like a good balance.

In other news, here's a little something I made just now, using Photoshop and Pixlr:

And here's that piece of artwork showing Angron by Alex Boyd that served as ine of my most important pieces of reference, once again:

While my Angron is far from a perfect match, I do believe he looks like a plausible interpretation of the same character, wouldn't you agree?

Again, thanks for all the kind words!

Again, cheers for the kind words, guys!

But there has to be a life after Angron, and while I'll be finishing the rest of the display base shortly (I hope), I also find my mind wandering towards the coming Call of Chaos event over at The Bolter & Chainsword: There are quite few stragglers left in my collection that I didn't paint for the ETL, so I should have some interesting stuff to paint for the upcoming event. But there's also the fact that this year's Call of Chaos is dedicated to Tzeentch -- easily the chaos god I am least interested in from a visual standpoint. But that somehow made it all the more tempting to include a little something Tzeentchian as part of my CoC vow, so I started working on a suitable model. Cheers, guys!

Chaos Emperor is correct, of course: That Thousand Sons Sorcerer is Iskandar Khayon, viewpoint character of Aaron Dembski-Bowden's "The Talon of Horus" (which I cannot possibly recommend enough), and that axe is Saern, taken from a slain Space Wolf during the Fall of Prospero. So I guess that explains it

I'll have to wait for the actual Call of Chaos before I can get some paint on Khayon, however, so here's something else for you:

I recently painted a modern plastic Bloodthirster using my - now pretty well established - daemon recipe:

And I am pretty pleased with this guy! The interesting part, however, is that I am currently working on an "older brother" of this particular Bloodletter design, because fellow World Eater AMaxmimus recently sent me some of the late 90s/early 00s' Bloodletters, and I immediately started repainting one of them:

The model was missing its two-handed axe, but a modern plastic Hellblade arguably improves the somewhat clunky base model. If all goes well, I'll end up with a nice little comparison of three of the four incarnations of the Bloodletter:

On a somewhat related note. AMaximus also included this old chestnut in his bitz drop: a leftover vintage Bloodthirster head:

And here's a little fun bonus: A picture of all the models I've managed to paint so far this year:

Only 22 models so far, but I am still pretty happy with my output As you can tell from the amount of red and bronze, it has been a very Khornate year so far, although there's also the beginning of a fairly promising pitslaves gang and a couple of Inquisitorial Henchmen that I am pretty fond of.

As always, let me know what you think!

Thanks a lot, everyone!

So, time for another update:
Earlier this week, I returned home to discover the cutest little package in the world had arrived from the UK. Inside the package, I found a wonderfully sinister cultist of Khorne built and painted by none other than spectacularly talented Terrain-Overlord extraordinaire Neil101 :

Now I was already aware that Neil had built this model for me a while ago, but the fact that he also chose to paint it in his trademark style was a wonderful surprise indeed! The result is something far more painterly and visceral than anything I could have come up with, and I am really in love with this guy right now. And that wasn’t all, because accompanying the Khornate champion came a wonderfully macabre “Bucket o’ Blood” (followers of Khorne never leave home without it!):

As is usually the case with Neil’s work, there’s a wonderfully macabre and demented nature to the whole affair, calling to mind both the infamous Yggdrassilliumme as well as the kind of characters you would see in the golden days of Realm of Chaos. And while I am already hard at work figuring out a suitable angle for this guy as a part of the Velsen Sector (he’ll be a member of the so-called “Duelists”, an insidious Khornate lodge operating in the sector), Neil was also kind enough to provide his own little vignette of background:

Coal black eyes kindled the embers of hate, as the headsman daubed his breastplate with the aged ichor of his enemies. His skull face plate chafed at the nape of his neck, the fitting too tight for comfort.

So much he had given, but the Blood God’s bucket had a hole. Never enough, always more.

The unsaturated hunger for power, for glory, always gnawed at his soul. Like the itch of his helm, the one he couldn’t scratch…reminding him that his work was never done. His bucket never full.

In other news, I posted my thoughts on the new model for Khârn the Betrayer on my blog earlier this week, in case anyone's interested.

Last but not least, I also finished this guy:

Angron Thal'kr, Lord of the Red Sands

And the nice stuff keeps coming!! This new Angron of yours is really neat, and the painjob really does him justice. This new skin tone you used really fits him imho. And great idea to paint the base as sand rather than you usual dark grey, suits the gladiatorial feel very well. I think it could use some blood right under that helmet (and btw where is it from?) though it is common knowledge by now how reluctant you are when using that special effect
Another thing, very nice review of the new Khârn model

Cheers, guys!

@ Ashenwhyte: The skin recipe goes like this:

- basecaot the skin areas with GW Rakarth Flesh
- wash with GW Ogryn Flesh (or GW reikland Fleshshade)
- add a thin layer of GW Cadian Fleshtone
- add a mix of GW Carroburg Crimson and GW Druchii Violet to the recesses to create shadows, bruising or distressed looking skin as needed.

@ Legio Ultra: Seeing how this is basically Angron in his pre-Imperial life, the sandy arena base was a crucial part of the model! Ths sand was created using Vallejo Sandy Paste, which is a great little tool for basing!

As for the blood: My take was that the helmet doesn't come from a recent opponent (which is why it's partway buried in the sand), hence no blood The bit is from MaxMini.eu, I believe.
