There are a wide range of paint ranges out there and beefHeart requested a poll of what people actually use so here it is. There are loads of ranges and we cant list them all, so I tried to do the major ones.

i'd say that Vallejo Game Color are better than Games Workshop (Citadel) but i only have a fiew in the Vallejo range plus you get more paint for less money!

I use to have about $200 worth of GW paint. My biggest turnoff for GW was how quickly the paint dried out. Ended up experimenting with Vallejo back in grad school and never looked back. I just love the dropper approach. GW does have some amazing washes though...if a bit expensive compared to Kell's Magic.

Lately I've been all about the Reaper Master color Triads. Reaper has a nice flow an open time right out of the bottle unlike Vallejo.

I do Like the Vallejo Metallics and Airbrush series but Game Colors and Model Colors seem really thick to me so I wind up diluting them with a flowaid/retarder/water mix whereas I don't have to do that with the reaper paints...

GW & P3... What can i say other than i really hate the flip tops. Dipping for paint, in my experience, trashes my brushes way b4 their time. I do keep a few GW colors around, Brazen Brass, Dwarf Bronze and Scaley Green because I have not found good replacements for those colors.

I tend to do a fair amount of Glazing and by far P3 seems to work the best in that regard. P3 colors also seem to mix well especially on a wet pallet. Also there are two P3 colors(Coal Black and Frostbite) that I could not live without...

I have used Tamyia and Model Master Enamels for years with my 1/35 models. I have just kept using it as I'm familiar with it, and I already had a lot.

Except for washes and foundation paints. Those are awesome!

I use a mix of GW and Vallejo (both model color and game color).

I rarely buy new GW paints except for a few Foundation colors here and there, and the new washes. Any other time, if my GW pot dries up, I usually buy Vallejo Game Color to replace it.

A lot of the Vallejo Model color I use for historicals, like Flames of War. GW and Game Color tend to not have as good a selection of the more drab colors, so except for a few colors, I rarely use them on historicals without some mixing.

I've also got a few other things, like some bottles of Kel's Magic Sauce and Didi's Magic Ink (which I love.)

I used to use the vallejo paints a bit, but i didn't much like the necessary commitment to the blob of paint dropped out. Course, that would at least make for easier blending. But even though they do dry up and are somewhat expensive, I stay tight with Citadel and their paints. I especially like the stackability of them.

I'm starting to substitute Vallejo's Game color for my GW paints, but for now I'm sticking with GWs metallics. I've used a few of the Foundation paints, but I feel like I'm just using the Vallejo Model color range. I've also just recently discovered the Citadel Washes. I've found that these dramtically improve my painting time as I'm able to skip 3-4 steps per mini. I would probably try the Reaper stuff, but nobody in our area has sold it for several years.

I use VMC, VGC, RMS, GW Foundation, and some PP. I find I like certain color mixes etc and like the flavor I get across lines.

For my Metallics I now Swear by Model Colour. The Game Colour Metallics are crap compared to them

I have them too! , but they are too similar to GW paints so i generally go back to my vallejo box.

But 100% great paints to use if you like how GW paints work , 3x bigger for 1/2 the price i believe? ( so thats... 5x the worth around there.... )

I started painting using P3 paints mostly because my first miniatures that required painting were Privateer Press stuff. For Reaper I've only used their paint on black primer. When I was getting heavy into painting my Hordes stuff and alternate schemes for some of my Khador I tried out a bunch of Vallejo's paints. I've only recently incorporated GW/Citadel paints into use.

Most will point and laugh, but I use Apple barrel extensivly. (i always water down my paints anyway, why not get pre watered down? )

I use P3 and foundation for basecoats, and citadel washes/inks.

Here are what i use! ( i think thats 5 shades of black and grays from vallejo , and 4 more shades of lighter ones from GW
this way i dont have to mix and end up with different shade by accident or failed memory! )

i started with reaper, til the store i got them at closed, since then i've incorporated a goodly number of gw paints, since i've been lucky on finding them on sale.
given the option, i'll probably add in some p3 stuff, i tried out a few my friend had, and rather liked them

I started on GW and then tryed some reaper paints and P3, but hated them with a passion. I personally have found that GW paints and brushes last me forever even tough I do pretty bad stuff with them [sometimes I undercoat with the fine detail brush] and they still have fine detail and the paint range is large and lasts forever with me. They dry fast [which is what like to speed paint]. Someone will have to make a paint god to turn me from GW paints and brushes. Yes the cost is high but some is the return for me.

YMMV

I still have and use some of my Ral Partha paint, but mostly use GW paints. I had the entire Ral Partha line, and much preferred their screm top lids to the very crappy GW ones - old (thin round bottle flip top - the flip eventually breaks), slightly newer (the hex bottles which suffered the same fate as above), the screw tops (hard plastic mean that there was no flexibility when paint got caught between and you would not get a good seal), current paint, foundation and washes - where paint dribbles down the back when you open them up.

I also use Windsor and Newton inks - they can't be beat for their richness of colour, however you do end up with a glossy finish (fixed with a matt coat...)

I've been think of investing in a full set of Vallejo Game Colour...

QFT - I've used FolkArt Artist Pigments since the line came out. I have separate mixing containers, use about 50/50 water paint and have never had an issue.

I like their metallic line as well.

I use a whole lot. GW for metallics, VMC for general use, some VGC for specific color matching, some P3 because I wanted to try them out, and also reaper master for flesh tones.

However, my star players are Liquitex soft body (and some heavy body) artists acrylics. They have the best working properties and pigment strength (as you would expect, being artists grade) and I phase them in as I run out of other colors. Though I stick to an artists palette with these i.e. warm and cool primaries and some earth tones.

Basically as I run out of gaming company colors I don't replace them, prefering instead to mix them myself. This is taking a while though so I still have a ton of specific colors taking up a lot of space on my desk.

If i could get exact matching colors from the valleo line i would switch.
But after starting army's with GW paints im afraid to switch and have to custom blend all my colors to match whats already done.
For the most part gw stuff is good tho im not fond of skull white,4 coats over lightest foundation paint to get a templar shoulder white is redicoulus
scorpion green could use some tweaks too

Actually, you can download an equivalency chart from the Vallejo website to match up with Citadel colors (and just about any other brand). Also, I'm pretty sure someone on here did one a few months back. Edit: There it is posted above me.

Also, another vote for Vallejo! I've had some of mine for about six years now and they're still good to go!

Edit: Just looked at the chart, and might have to try the Vallejo paints that one of my friends uses.

I use all GW.
Got the giant case so I was set for colors.

Ive tried Vallejo Game Color, and frankly I dont see what the hype is about =/
The Charred Brown I got covered miserably compared to the GW Scorched Brown, and even the gold GW has covered better than the Vallejo.

I think I really only use Vallejo if I need a particular OOP color (like Hammered Copper, which I am pleased with the color, however thin it goes on)

So Im gonna stick with GW, unless I find something better.

GW (because I have so much of it)
Vallejo (both line, just started using it for FOW)
Tamiya (mostly because I was looking for certain colors and its great for airbrushes)
Poly Scale (not sure if this line is still active anymore, but I still have bottles)
Testors Acrylic (usually comes with some models)
Delta Ceremacoat (for terrain)

Vallejo is tempermental because you have to shake it... a LOT.

I purchased one of these because I have to shake the bottles so much.

I use primarily MP Miniature Paints: made by a bloke in his garage, high quality pigment with good flow and transparency. I use the GW greys and sivlers extensively as I like them, some old and new GW washes, Vallejo and P3 metallics for brass/copper tone, Tamiya smoke and pigment powders, and even some old i-kore (now urban mammoth) paints as I've yet to find a better bone colour (and bless em, when they stopped making it, they gave me their last 3 bottles - ah, back in the days when I was on speaking terms with urban mammoth!). I guess it's got to be a case (trite as this may sound) as find what works for you.

On a side note, what about brushes? I use GW masters and tank brush, Tamiya fine and humbrol basics.

I'm doing the exact same thing
Got years of paints to get through yet though, my oldest one is a Sunburst Yellow from 1996, which is as good today as when I bought it (so its essentially bright yellow water) but is currently seeing much action as I'm painting an Iyanden army.
The vallejo paints are better but I've got a Vallejo black ink and the amount it has to be watered down is obscene. Still, it'll last for years so I don't really mind.

I find Vallejo superior in terms of how much you get in the bottle, but the squeezy bottle itself is a great idea, no more flip top lids!

i started with gw and got the mega paint set -the OLD mega paint set-. since that time they switched lids from screw top to flip top, introduced new colors, and discontinued colors (including at least one newer than my set). some have dried out and one has even run out but i replaced all of those with non-gw substitutes.
i really love reaper master series and have been trying to expand more into that range than any other. my second favorite range is p3 i dislike the bottles but the coverage and consistency is so worth the mild annoyance of those lids. i tend to use VGC paints for direct replacements of gw paints and they are pretty good but not amazing. i have not found better metallics than gw and he washes are unique and useful. i also own some foundation paints but i only find red and orange all that useful now that i have p3 white.
i have tried two model color paints and hate them more than apple barrel. they were entirely different colors and had completely different problems which were both significant.

I dont think it'd work too well especially on minis.

Its latex-based, so it ALWAYS will retain that rubbery texture.
Plus, they're thicker than most any other paint, and in my experience do not thin well at all.

On terrain its great though... acts as a bit of a cushion for when minis fall over.

Though i think there may be acrylic wall paint..... i dont know about it though.... *has no experience with it ^^;;*

I use a few GW foundations, washes, and metallics. My dozen or so go-to paints are VGC. For slapping on terrain or if I simply don't have/can't mix a Vallejo/Citadel equivalent, I have a big old box full Apple Barrel Colors, with a few Delta Ceramcoat bottles mixed in that I inherited from my mom's days of kitschy pseudo-folksy crafting. Not the greatest paints in the world, but if the damn things still mix and pour after a decade in the basement, so I'm not worried about trying to use them up. Too bad half of the colors are neon affronts to my sensibilities. Slaanesh would think them too gaudy to paint an army with. Regardless, that still leaves me with probably two dozen bottles of various reasonably useful colors that get the job done, if needed.

I personally use GW, Reaper, Tamiya, Testors enamels, and Poly Scale Steam Power Black. I find Tamiya paints don't dry-brush nicely or work as washes and the GW and Testors are used because I have them. The Poly Scale is used because it's more paint than any other company sells in one bottle that can be used in any application which is great for flat black.

having used both games workshop paints for the past 10 years and recently moved to using both vallejo ranges I wish I'd have known what I do now years ago. Vallejo are a far superior range, boasting more colours, more paint per pot, cheaper per pot and some other little gems like metal medium allowing you to mix any colour into a metallic version or formulated thinner to help the colours flow! I'll never recommend games workshop range to anyone ever again having made the conversion myself...especially with games workshops constant price rises :(

I use mostly GW. When I started, I bought alll my paints from the FLGS-now defunct and it was all they had - even though I had a friend tell me to get Vallejo.

Now I wish I had listened to him and tracked it down on the internet. I plan to switch over to Vallejo paints as I use up my GW stuff, though that will be ages and ages from some of them. Scorched brown will be gone fairly quickly - Liche purple might take a few decades.

I also have some Reaper paints and they are great (and the only other paint aside from GW I can get locally). But the shear number of triads I would need is offputting. But I will use all their excellent skin-tones.

I use Delta Ceramcoat and Folkart craft paints almost exclusively, though I do have a couple of pots of Mechrite Red in my collection just to help get red paint over a black undercoat to look better.

I've been stuck on Citadel paints for years. I tried Reaper Triads and loved them but of course my FLGS stopped stocking them as he said "No ones buying them". Once my current stock of Citadel runs out I may acquire some more Reaper and give a go with Vallejo if the price is right online.

Same. I do dislike the way foundation paints tend to flake up so easily in the pots, and though citadel washes are fantastic, one fault is that it does get thin and gunk accumulates at the bottom, which means you have to really dig at it in order to use it.

I use Reaper Paints. I was introduced to it by dakka users. Expensive, but works extremely well, they have every color I need, and only on very rare occasions do I find myself going back to find GW paints.

Before I used Citadel Paints, I used Testors Enamel. I stopped using it, but one of my friend's still uses it. The colors are very rich, but it's hard to do any kind of subtly or depth with it. It can also be a pain to work with, as it's much thicker than normal paint. You need a chemical thinner, and it tends to dry out on the pallette.

I use the cheap acrylic paints, no particular brand, whatever color i think is the best shade is the bottle i pick. I have really gotten into metallic stuff, tends to spread easier and cover better than the usual fodder.

We are currently finishing off our Games Workshop pots here in the studio, in probably a month we will be ordering the entire Vallejo line (I heard they throw in a stand if you do this, can anyone confirm?).

Vallejo has the same color line, just as brilliant colors and has squeeze bottles. And is 25%+ cheaper per volume.

The amount of paint that is lost here due to drying up in those terrible citadel bottles here is painful.

Comparatively, GW's green and yellow line has absolutely terrible coverage.

I typically use the old Citadel colors. My Marines though use 2 colors by the discontinued company, Ral Partha as their primary colors. But I find Reaper's Metallics to be somewhat better than the old Citadel colors.

I had bought way too much GW paint.
Switched them into eye-dropper containers, helped also with the drying out problem.
(GW 12mL = use 15mL dropper): http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/50pcs-15ml-Empty-Plastic-Squeezable-Dropper-Bottles-Eye-Liquid-Dropper-LDPE-NI5L/507931_1051186658.html

I now have switched to Liquitex: much cheaper and better paint.
http://www.liquitex.com/us/Shop/The_Professional_System/
I tend to thin these for airbrush (which works fine for brush work too!) so I put them in these:

Oh yeah, and add these:http://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/G1000-AISI304-AISI420-Stainless-Steel-Pellets_60104856449.html

To each their own.

Citadel's easiest to find, but Vallejo makes better paint. Longer shelf life, less gloppy, and the alcohol-based metallics cover evenly and opaquely in one coat.

Except when I get confused and accidentally borrow oil paints.

That's understandable. I would recommend Vallejo Air Metallics, though. I think they have a really fine grain and interact well with Citadel washes.

I use almost exclusively Citadel paints. They may be a bit on the pricey side, but they are really good, and I never have to mix them to get the color I want. I do have some Vallejo brush-on primer, though, as the Citadel brush-on stuff is pure crap in a pot.

GW's paint, Reaper MPS, small amount of craft, and my personal favorite: Ral Partha. These are the old school paint pots with the U.S. Address on them. About 20 years old at this point.

Honestly, a mix.

GW - partly for convenience, but the base colours and shades are really good.

Foundry - convenience again, as my daughter has guitar lessons about 10 minutes from their shop, and I do like several of their triads a lot.

Vallejo Model Colour used to be my go-to brand for reds and yellows. Carmine Red and Lemon Yellow are still favourites, but GW Mephiston Red and Averland Sunset get a lot of use as well.

And a mix of other stuff - Coat d'Arms, P3, any colour or group that takes my fancy. P3 Menoth White, Morrow White and... White are a great combination for linen and warmer whites than highlighting up from grey or blue.

Always fancied trying Reaper - maybe one day. ANd Army Painter washes sound good. Been tinkering with my own home-made washes too, with some OK results.

For terrain, Anita's Craft range of acrylics were great, but I'm having trouble finding them locally so I tend to go with cheap acrylic gloop these days. Reeves I think?

Sure I read somewhere that American craft acrylic brands were significantly better quality than British ones - I certainly wouldn't use Anitas for figures.

Still on GW's paints but they are eventually replaced by Vallejo Paints. AV is cheaper and better, also Vallejo's paints don't get lumpy after half a year passed.
