[img][img][list] I have obviously been working on a huge amount of models so this is now my CITIES OF DEATH terrain BLOG
Yeah guys I am looking for some color ideas for my Shrine Of Aquila Conversion project. I have been playing around with a marble-ish paint job but can't decide. Any advice you guys have would be awesome. You can see the raw version in my gallery.
Thanks in advance for any input.

looking cool dude! if you can pull off that marble effect then i think that would make it look pretty awesome and unique.. what sets did you use to create this inc. the shrine?

Post by: jabbakahut
I wouldn't try marble buy in a few spots. Imperial building and architecture tends to be metallic and concrete.
18867
Post by: madmartykmf
It is a combination of all three cites of death kits mainly the Shrine of Aquila and Sanctum Imperialis. As for the color ideas I already have three other kits in the grey, metal, imperium look. Just wanted some ideas on something more unusual, like the marble-ish look. I think I am going to go for an ivory color and a darker gold color for the aquilia. I will post some pics soon.
Any other ideas would still be welcome.
Thanks for the comments

Nice! If you want some easy candles, a bit of plastic rod and a cut-off of most top-knots will make a nice candle.

i am happy you like it... the recipe is bestial brown base coat, dry brush stone brown, dry brush bone white, dry brush mithiral silver (very very lightly) , and wash with devlin mud!!
i tried it on a test piece first to find the right blend, so try it first and figure out what amounts work for you.

Nice! You have a pretty sweet project going on here. Original and great idea. I agree with the aquila on the front of the altar. Can't wait to see more

Post by: CommissarKhaine
For what it's worth: I like the altar. I might consider filling in the roguht spots with greenstruff, but that's just personal preference. I know the termie is still WIP, but I'd really consider adding lots of weathering to the model - the paint isn't made from ceramite AFAIK
Good job, keep it up!

Post by: madmartykmf
thanks for all the feedback, it has helped out a ton. The problem with the altar (it is a prototype) is that it is made from pink foam! which as we all know melts when glued and sprayed. the top is plasty card and the rest is pink foam. I have been thinking about what other pieces I can use but nothing comes to mind. Forge World has a nice resin one but it costs like $20 us. What do you guys think? I need help on this one cuz without the altar the whole idea is pointless.
as for the dead termie I cant wait to weather it!! lots of dings, dents , and scratches are forth coming!
HELP I NEED AN ALTAR! ( at least one I love anyway ) OH well back to the drawing board!!!
Thanks again,
Mike

Just fill in the spared bits with plasticard, then spray it black again. Or build the basic shape out of plasticard and add bits, it should be feasible. As far as I can tell from the pics, sliding a bit of plasticard between the decorations shouldn't be too hard? As an alternative, get hold of the old heroquest boxed set. it includes an altar

I dig the alter, I'm jealous.

Post by: Chibi Bodge-Battle
nice work - love the project
the alter seems small to me - but is a prototype?
the Imperium seem to do things LARGE, so see it as being a huge solid affair - I like the idea of the Aquila which is de rigeur for all things imperial.
FWIW I have found that the best results for sticking plastic card to foam is the No-nails type adhesive.
It can be a bit slippy at first but once in position and left to dry gives an excellent bond.
Another advantage is that it is available here from the cheapo shops!
look forward to seeing more
ps What about an alter cloth over the top to add more interest

@Chibi Bodge-Battle
after a great deal of thought I think I agree with your larger is a better idea. My new altar will be a multi level with an aquila proudly displayed at the top. Also I LOVE the cloth idea! I am going to steal that from you.

Facing a pink foam alter with plastic card shouldn't be too difficult, and would give it a sense of rigidity. Mounting it on a small platform would also make it more imposing.
I also think a free standing Aquilla in place of the goblet would work well!

Lets put it to a vote and the most votes will determine the color!! I am good with any of the above

In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only dirty water.
I would make it a very dark blackish colour, if possible. Clean enough to drink without making you too sick, but dirty enough to show it has been in the system for a long time and has picked up plenty of dirt and grime along the way.

the tank has a skeleton and a skull at the bottom so the color of the water needs to be translucent ,but I am think you guys are leaning to "DARK" if I am not mistaken!! I will be adding a lasgun, guardsmen helmet and other detritus.

ok well just a short story about this one. I was having an ADD moment trying to finish my altar and started surfing Armorcast's site . When out of no where I see this sediment collector, perfect for water effects. I have been toying around with water effects and wanted to do a fountain, but it didnt fit my over all theme. So whats the next best things?? A freakin water pump station. So I went to my local GW which is run by a really cool dude ( side note, he hooked me up with the zombie ) thanks Will, and picked up movement trays and a mechanicum building and voila a zombie infested city water pump system. WARNING dont drink the water!!!!!
This is a rough build but any ideas you guys have would be great!!

Post by: dietrich
Looks good. I might repose the zombie. Right now, it's obviously coming out of the pool to get someone. I think if it was hanging on the edge, it would be more nebulous - is it a dead body hanging on the pool, or a zombie pulling itself up? And maybe put a guardsmen helmet on him!

Wow I have been away and a surge of interest hits! Thanks for all the comments, I have been REALLY REALLY busy with work and no time for mini building ( sad sad times ). But with all that behind me I can start working again. So let me start by saying thanks for all the positive feedback, it makes all the had work worth while.
1) Shrine Of Aquila: after weeks of toiling I am done trying to scratch build one soooo at the bottom of this post you can see what will become the Altar for my Shrine!!
2) Water color for the Treatment Plant... aaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnd the color is DARK!! hahahahahahah! After all the responses to the water color I have decided to go with a murky but see through dark green. Think sewer, there will be dark green flock in between the layers of Water Effects. It will take some time to perfect but it will look like trash floating in the water.
3) ZOMBIE!!!! I have not finalized the design yet but I like the idea of him coming out of the Treatment Plant. The IG Zombie is a neat idea but this is easier said then done. Believe me when I tell you have have torn that Zombie apart and gave him all kinds of poses. The lunging Zombie is my favorite. I did however get a ghoul from MANTIC Games that I will also have a picture of at the bottom. Let me know what you guys think.
Thanks for all the comments and support!!! As always PLEASE keep them coming, every idea makes this project a community project! This is for you guys as much as it is for me!!

The altar is looking good. if you want it to be a focal point though, I think it needs to 'pop' a bit more. Maybe a marble effect on the top slab of the altar?
Also, the ghouls just begs to be sitting on the edge of the basin, with an unfortunate victim trying to crawl away through the sludge and refuse - classic horror movie stuff

Looks pretty sick dude! One thing I might add is some gs to the bases of those candles to mold them more into the surface they're sitting on and maybe some wax drips below. At the moment it looks a bit too much like they've just been stuck there.
If you wanted it to really look like an ancient shrine that's been getting some serious use over the years you could go really overboard with the wax, adding layers and layers of the stuff and big stalagmites of it on the floor below.

Looking good! Marble soundslike a good idea, and if you can pull it off, illuminated lettering on the open books would make it look more ornate, adding to the altar feel.
18867
Post by: madmartykmf
@CommissarKhaine- I am doing marble effects for the bulk of the altar and metallic colors for the rest. How would you go about illuminated letters? I am interested in that but how do you make letters look like they are written in fire??
@jackanory- The collected wax sounds awesome, I am def stealing that idea!!
As for an update the Dead Termmie is nearly done being painted ( pics soon ) and I am test painting the marble effect. It is not as easy as I thought it would be!! HAHAHAH

So here is the question:
Zombie or NO Zombie??
17349
Post by: SilverMK2
The pigments look good - how are you using them, if I may ask? Edit: And without the lasgun or zombie I think - unless you dirty up the bottom even more (ie add more rubbish etc) and generally make the water quite opaque.

Post by: madmartykmf
@SilverMK2
Thanks for the compliment. As far as the usage goes it is very simple. The product is "Self Adhesive", so all you really have to do is put the powder where you want it and rub it in. I am using an old dry brush, but I assume that any stiff brush will do. It is VERY VERY messy , and leaves little control. The control factor comes from the self adhering product. If you miss the target and get it into places you didn't want it well get ready to repaint that area. Most pigments are set by rubbing alcohol so overdusting is a matter of simply blowing the remaining off. (Note: with this particular brand if it hits it sticks) All in all it was great fun and turned out great .
I would recommend that beginners try this out on scrape plastic to see how it works.
Thanks for the comment and hope that this helps.

I have MIG pigments which I fix using alcohol (and sometimes use in oil paints too for extra colour and texture).

I love Warhammer Fantasy movement trays!! all of my bases, and floors are made out of movement trays. The marble-esque floor is a steady hand filling in a cut to fit movement tray!! I really like it. Great work all around, especially the rust. IMHO you could make the melted gaurdsman thing that extra bit cooler by putting a couple nurglings in the goop. Maybe one sneaking out from under the helmet and a fat one on the leading edge of the goop?

Great stuff so far. The weathering powders really added a good deal of depth.
Re: lasgun/no lasgun. I vote no lasgun. Something would have come by and nicked it for sure. Even waterlogged and non-functional, it would probably get looted.
Re: Coloring water effects, don't use paint. Use ink. Most art supply stores will sell you any color of the rainbow for a couple bucks. And use them very, very sparingly. One or two drops of ink for your entire pool batch is enough to add color to water, without losing the detail on the pool floor. You can always experiment with color combinations.
Good luck, keep up the great work!

Though if you have to wait for each layer to harden, it does give you scope to add in floating bits of weed, etc.

The water effects I bought have a 1/8 inch pour every 12 hours. Basically you can't pour more than that to get a good result. Hardening time is 12 hours so it will take me roughly 2 days to finish. I am going to place some mold around the edges of the plant in between the 2nd and 3rd pour. I will take a picture of the process for you guys to see. I am excited to see the end results!!
Thanks for the comments and keep um coming.
Also do vines turn color in the fall?? I am thinking of using fall leaves and dead trees for my city ( http://www.skullcrafts.com/bs_1403.htm). The only problem is I already used green vines on my imperial command building!!! SOOOOO does anyone know if vines on walls change in the fall. My guess is yes but I am looking for a second opinion. Or do you guys think it will look okay with green vines and orange/red foliage.

I am glad you like everything, it means a lot when people comment on and critique my work. It is always nice when people like what you do, so thanks for the compliment and keep your comments coming.
As for a tutorial I think it would be better for me to just have you PM me with any questions you have. That way I don't have to make a new thread and any questions that you have about a specific area are clearly answered!! So fire away!!

GW made a gothic graveyard a few years back for WHF. I use it often in my 40K games. I think a graveyard would be a great idea. Peopel still die in the future......I know my basic Guardsmen do. Can't wait to see it.

Thanks for the hint, I am not 100% on the idea of a graveyard but if I do go for it I will be using Armorcast , and GW cities of death kits. To me it just sounds like it would be fun to make a graveyard BUT does it go with the overall theme?? That is the big question

You might find a small graveyard sandwiched between buildings, perhaps in some "lost" ground that has been forgotten by the administration and used by a family or group of families who have been working in the factories for generations?
My view of it might be something like the graveyard in "Lost in Space" - no tombstones as such, but markers/totems with personal items of the departed, their names, etc, graves dug wherever there was room, so no ordered rows, etc.
I can't find a picture of it, but I hope you know what I mean.

Good morning everybody!! Well I can't sleep so here is a picture of the Imperial command buildings bases before paint. Also the second pour has been done!! It is looking better and better, but it may be more like 5 pours total. That sucker is deep.
So here you have a mix of pink foam, sprue, bitz, and sand. Paint to follow along with the fall foliage and rust effects. Pictures as soon as they are ready.

I like the raised edges between the paths and the graves - it really helps to define the space in a way that just having grave stones would not.

I think the piece, itself, looks neat. I don't like the *idea* of an old-fashioned graveyard in the 41st Millennium. I think they'd have different ways of doing things by then (cremation, giant underground tombs, shuttling the bodies off into space, warp rifts [LOL], etc), since real estate would be at a premium.
The actual piece IS starting to take a nice shape, however.
Also, something I discovered on Water Effects... You don't have to color ALL of your pours. Often, just coloring the FIRST pour gives you the color you want. Leaving the following pours clear will help your details to stay more visible.

just a quick one for tonight thanks for all the feedback and comments!! I understand the graveyard being sort of out of place but the total cost of the build will be like 20 bucks!! It was made out of left over bitz mainly, I think once it is done it will fit with the whole chapel motif, whats a church without a graveyard right?? Anyway I am back to work so lets see what I can get done this week. As always keep the feedback coming. I love to hear from you guys!! I want to put some algae in the water plant but don't know what type of material I should use. Should I use a certain type of flock?? The static grass I have doesn't look convincing at all !! Well, I was planning on doing some blossom on some trees using really finely chopped up bits of coloured paper stuck onto lichen bushes. Thought of anything like that? Though having just thought about it, perhaps you could add a dusting of weathering powder between layers? That would probably fit algae more closely than chopped up paper.

Looks good so far, not sure if you need more water in there or not.
Just a note on the toxic water - you may want to add a little bit more running out in the cracks between the paving slabs, was fluids tend to run into cracks before flooding over slabs (unless they are particularly sticky )

I am glad you like it!! As for the bases for the buildings I use warhammer fantasy modular movement trays. They are very versatile, you can cut them and use them for bases, floors, ceilings and roofs. The Water Plant buildings roof is actually a movement tray. Look very carefully and you can see every time is used them. Try it out they are wonderful!! Keep the comments coming!!

I'd say rubble over a crater...unless you have rubble and a crater with the inner walls burnt or covered in mud/dust etc from the shell/explosion.
The main reason I am posted though is you shrine looks beautiful. To the extent when I start building some Nercomunda terrain I may have to pinch some of your cool idea and implementation.
Thanks nice log

Maybe if the crater is going to be in the factory, it could have been caused by a defective tank shell ( or even the tank itself!) it would explain the explosion inside methinks! The weathering looks great on those buildings btw.

Let me know what you guys think. A mausoleum will be in the area where the wall has been ruined with the thought that it was bombed out to steal whatever treasure the owner was buried with. The graveyard will be very overgrown and not taken care of at all (overgrown grass a cracked in half tombstone, etc) . I am excited to have this one finished and remember the 3 chosen dakka members will be buried in the graveyard. Your layout (in the second last picture) seems to be the best. Maybe add some small bits of rubble near the broken wall section.
I'll give you some input for when it is past the mock up stages as well. It needs....... a shrubbery. Joking aside, some small plants dotted around the graveyard and maybe some flowers by a few of the grave stones (when you get to the painting stage).

The grave yard looks nice but from experience I used to work at Brompton Cemetery, in London (plenty of pics on google, its beautiful but creepy)... I would say you need to pack it with more Head Stones (though from a gaming perspective maybe not a great idea). Also from what I've read in this log I get the impression your grave yard is meant to be old/battered, so remember subsidence will make the head stone sink into the ground.
I second Gathering Storm's suggestion about flowers/offerings. If you are putting flowers down I would suggest dead/dying colour scheme, uncared for in a battle field kinda way.
Looking forward to seeing it finished.

With regards to the graveyard; those graves need some serious mistreatment. Battle damage, sides broken off, cracks everywhere, mould, overgrown/burnt grass etc. etc.

Anyway back to the THREAD TOPIC (don't want to get in trouble )
The graveyard will have plenty of ruble and believe me it will look gnarly!! The one thing that I have really been thinking about is over grown grass and yes a few broken headstones. I would love to have a ton of headstones but this piece is not a diorama, it must have function. My bitz did not arrive today, but the feedback you guys have given me has really got the old gears turning!! I making a scratch built tomb for the one corner of the graveyard. Pink foam, plastic card, and bitz. It will most likely look similar to the original altar that I built. I have started working on it so as soon as it is done pics to follow. Thanks again!!

Here we go one scratch built sarcophagus!! It is ornamented with purity seals and no doubt holds a hero of some sort. I have melted the top in place and added handles to simulate the separation of the "lid" to the sarcophagus. I also added some battle damage to liven it up a bit. This one will be a tan-ish sandstone color with the top in a burnished bronze. It will look as if it has aged and not be cleaned for a loooooong time leaving it more greenish ( i.e. the statue of liberty ) Let me know what you think, love it or hate it, plus suggestions are always appreciated!!
Thanks and here we go...

You'd think a hero would have a whole mosouleum (spelled that wrong!) or maybe more. And if he was a local hero, wouldnt he be honored with the greatest local stone?

Hey!
I might be tempted to make a small cut into the foam around the edges of the lid to make it look like the lid is quite thick and is sitting "in" the stone block, rather than floating on top?

The first one that I made had a deep cut around it but it didn't look right. If you look close at this one, I attempted to make it look like a lid with decay around it!! I will probably paint it tonight so after it is done you should see much more detail.

This is excellent. You could make the moss a bit darker/browner so its a little more creepifying. Though glowing moss might be unsettling too so maybe brighter.

Nothing of the sort, I just thought you might find it interesting
The tarnish you have on your piece seems like it has only been building up for a short while, which would fit with a city recently under attack (about a year or so perhaps?) - the people who usually tending it perhaps having been killed, or unable to stay there long enough to clean it properly?

After a super frustrating time I have ordered a pre-made mausoleum from armorcast!! I will save the bitz I ordered for another building, the final one I think . Anyway that is for another post. So with the day off and paint on the brain I decided to have a go at the Altar!!! It is a simple paint job lots of subtle color change but the big question is how do you like the marble effect . It has a few layers of Ard coat and I think it turned out good!! So feedback on this one would be very much appreciated. As always thanks for the views and comments, keep um coming.

The marble looks pretty good - did you think about spackling on some different colour, such as red, green or black by flicking paint off a brush?
To make this kind of marble: http://mayang.com/textures/Stone/images/Marble/spotty_marble_4142267.JPG
Another idea might be to use a small quantity of really thinned oil paint and create a thin layer over the top of the glossed surface, and drop small drips of thinner onto it as it dries to create the kind of mottled marble effect as seen here:
http://budgie.deviantart.com/art/Marble-Stock-Texture-For-You-57816005
The white areas would correspond to the base colour and would be where you dripped the extra thinner.
I've not tried either of these methods really (the oil paint one I have accidentally done something similar ), but thought they might interest you if you wanted to have a go.
Looks great as it is though
Also, are you going to put any text on the books? Some illuminated lettering would be quite cool

Post by: madmartykmf
My wife the artist who is always the biggest supporter of my painting does NOT like marble effect I did . After listening to some ideas she has, I think it is simply missing the veins that marble has running through it. If I get a chance to re-paint it tonight I will put up pics.
@Whalemusic360
The skulls ,candles, scrolls, and the like have not been painted yet. They make more sense and look better when they are all together. I like the light on the altar though, it seems fitting in a sci-fi way. There is also a servo skull that will be floating around the top. Thanks for the feedback and as always keep um coming

Well, the ones I have seen most tend to have green, red and gold in the lettering. I would start off painting a small gold square, then frame it with a very thin box of red. Then do the main letter inside the box in the same red. Then add in a few very small blobs of green perhaps? At this scale you don't have to make it look like a letter really though. Then add in the usual squiggles for letters, etc for the rest of the page

Hey
I'm liking the marble, I tried painting it once and gave up. Adding the smoky brown veins really brings it out. Are you going to be putting the three skulls back? Because I think they would help break up the surface and add another point of interest.
As for the chalice it looks really nice and that's my problem with it. Its in a ruin cathedral in a war torn city. So can I suggest when you paint the one Whalemusic360 sends you please dull down the Blood/Wine a bit. eg http://image.shutterstock.com/display_pic_with_logo/55983/55983,1162235772,1/stock-photo-close-up-of-chalice-with-wine-and-bible-shallow-dof-2082977.jpg

Thanks I am starting to like it more, and more. Marble is a pain in the and I am glad to be finished with it. As for the skulls, yes!! They will be back along with books and candles. I also get what you are saying about the chalice. That is why I am giving this one to Whalemusic360 The paint doesn't fit the theme, but it is sweet!! As for the graveyard I am at a stand still until my armorcast order arrives. I am excited to finish it, but kinda glad that it is on hold. As we all know sometimes it is hard to finish a project 100%. The Altar was the very last thing I had left to do. So the delay in the graveyard gave the final push to finish the Altar. As soon as the candles, books, etc are painted I will have pics up.

I am very happy with it, BUT I have to tell you the cloth really tied it all together. The items on the Altar were lost because of the complex colors of the marble. I needed to break up the color confusion. The cloth was a simple way to do just that. I am probably not going to glue anything down except the cloth thus making it an objective maker!!
Thanks for the comment!!

If I may suggest something, (if you haven't done it already, I have only read a few pages) you should make portable MG's on a bipod (I think in 40k they are autoguns) in some of the windows, to look like someone set up a camping spot and then left.

Thanks for the comment, but which one of my buildings were you thinking about? The chapel doesn't lend itself ( in my mind ) to need gun placements. It is a cool idea though and the command building already has a perch for a sniper. Maybe I will look into doing something like that in the future.

Ahhh gotcha. I tried MDF but after I saw the movement trays I knew I had a winner. They are thin enough to not have a "CURB" effect and still ridged enough not to warp. Plus you can cut them to size and also use them as roof tops.

Well, if you use GW paints, they often get a build up of paint in the top part. If you grab the dried (but usually still flexible) paint with so tweezers, it makes pretty good roots. Not sure I have any examples, I think the models they were on took a Simple Green bath.

The first one is very imperial. Not to sure on the second one tbh.
Question that's been bugging me for a while. As your using the movement treys, which have once inch squares (I think, I dont play fantasy), do you have any concerns with people being able to measure distance without having to measure?

Thanks for the comment. Question number one: Thanks and yes it is super awesome and lookin very Imperial! The guy on the spike will be modified to look like a priest that was left as a warning to anyone coming to reclaim the city!! Question two: I have never really thought about that before; I guess that you could but the whole table will be the RoB board. Only the city buildings utilize the movement trays. I just always thought that they look cool ,kind of like a real city street sidewalk, curb"ish" look.

Well at the very least now you can use that to your advantage when planning assaults and whatnot. They do look cool, I was going to steal the idea until I thought of that. I may still anyways.

Out of sheer curiosity I just measured the squares, they are actually NOT 1 inch squares they are more like 3/4 by 7/8 inches!! I guess you could estimate movement but it would still need to be measured with a tape of some sort!! Just an FYI

Ah cool. Thats what bugged me about the GW "roads" was they were easy to pre-measure with. That and they suck

Thanks for your kind words, your stuff is pretty ace as well!
I do have a question to pose to you all today though. " TO PAINT OR NOT TO PAINT?", What I mean by that is I am going to be using more flocking and sand, ballast etc then I have ever used before. I am by no means a rookie painter ( I like to think I have a good degree of skill ) but I wonder if I need to paint the ground cover? I will be using tons of static grass so the first thought is it would be a waste of paint. I have never based anything with natural items, I have always painted it. So I guess what I am asking is do you or would you think less of the final product knowing that the modeler did not paint everything ,relaying on the natural color of the basing material to do all the hard work?
Here is a quick pic to wet your appetite for the finished product. Unfortunately I have been so busy at work I have had little time for painting By the way Dead Rising 2 Rocks! Anyway I will be hard at work this weekend to make some major progress so stay tuned for updates!
Thanks as always for your comments and critiques,
Mike

I've never really thought unpainted ground cover works very well, something to do with the scaling of the colours and light, but if there's plenty of static grass going on a wash or two might be enough.

That was sort of what I was thinking. Woodland senics offers so many pigmented ground coverings it seems as if they are designed to not be painted. The color I picked out is a small ballast with a darker brown color. I may do a few test examples and let you guys decide which one looks better.
Thanks for the input,
Mike

I am glad it looks like a tree to you and not a shrubbery
Fall Out New Vegas looks good, but my short attention span leans me more towards faster paced games!

I use the GF9 small grit and large grit to base pretty much everything (along with some field grass and GF9 static grass). I never paint it or wash it.
I've not used any "natural" stuff (twigs etc) though. I would echo monkeytroll though - the scale of the colouring might look off.
Though I am planning on adding a few more scenic bases into my Eldar army, and nothing but scenic bases for my IG when I get rount to them

I think I am going to paint the ground covering minus the static grass of course. I am not using any "NATURAL" items per say just ballast that is already pigmented I am really excited to start this project back up and looking for any ideas for my next piece, Any Ideas? I have an Imperial Bastion done already here is a pic. I am just itching to start planning my next building. I was thinking of doing a Landing Pad.
Thanks as always for all your comments,

Why not try and make an Arbites Precinct with attached landing pad. Like for SWAT insertions and stuff.

Nice work on the bastion, it looks like it needs a small splash of colour somewhere to break up the grey.

Thanks Commander Cain. The lighting is off in these photos but the gray is actually three different shades. The entire bastion is covered in rust and battle damage burns. Thanks for the comments and suggestion. I wanted the bastion to look like it is all steel and concrete. I was going for a simple hurried look.

THANK YOU When I was planning the color scheme that was the first color I threw out!
Thanks for the comments

If you leave the ballast unpainted, you might want to give it a really thinned down wash of PVA, just to make sure it's not going to go anywhere. Sort of filling the same job the primer normally does.

I was planning on that but great point and thank you . Woodland Scenics will used throughout the whole graveyard. I will be "Inking" as needed, but mostly I will be using pre-painted ballast and static grass.
I did see a great video by an incredible modeler at Terranscapes here is the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6O5TxneYTIc The Spanish moss is amazing and I will be using that technique in the graveyard. Make sure you check his work out! This guy is amazing
Thanks as always and keep the comments and suggestions coming
