I'm honestly not sure what the buyer is planning to count the jetbike as. He asked me to build it, so I did... but I'm assuming it will just count as a regular bike in game.

I hadn't been quite happy with the insides of the bike's wings... they were just too plain.
So, I scribed in some panel lines, and added some hydraulics. I'm also looking at options to magnetise the wings for safer transport.
Meanwhile, a little more putty work on the legs:
Started on the backpack:
And added a blade to his weapon and a magnet to his shoulder:

Post by: Aduro
While the wings are smaller than what I'd do, the membranes are coming out really nice and smooth. How do you get that kind of effect on something so large and thin and strung out between two anchor points like that? And then still have some wrinkled details along the edges?
99
Post by: insaniak
I was going to do up a quick video tutorial on the membranes, as it's a little hard to explain in writing... but turns out my camera only does video in 15 second snippets, which wasn't going to work...
So it will have to wait until I can either figure out how to describe it in a normal tute, or get a video camera...
Meanwhile, Membranes all in place:
A couple of them need a slight trim, and then the 'hands' need thumbs.
Also need to replace the magnets in the shoulder sockets, as the wings have turned out a little heavy for the ones I have in there now...
17349
Post by: SilverMK2
I love the look of those wings. So much better than the standard ones. I have to say that the first time I saw the reposed tyrant (have to say that I loved both the flying and reposed versions), I thought "Crouching tiger, hidden Tyrant" Great work on everything I have seen here.

Post by: insaniak
Biomorphs!
The biomorphs were intended to go along the same lines as those on my previous Tyrant, although a few minor tweaks were necessary due to this one being made entirely from Tyrant parts, whereas the first one used a Carnifes top half, which gave a little more play room.
SO, I trimmed down some adrenal glands, and inserted steel pins into the underside of them. I then drilled 2mm holes in either side of the Tyrant's neck, inserted small rare-earth magnets, and then puttied back over the hole. That way, the Tyrant has a normal looking neck when not using the Adrenal Glands, and they can simply be slipped into place when needed.
The implant attack was made a similar way, by carving a hollow spike out of a piece of off-cut sprue, sticking a pin in the back end of it, and implanting a magnet under the end of the Tyrant's tail:
The Toxin sacs were a little more difficult, as there really wasn't any flat surface big enough for them without sticking them on his carapace. So, I drilled a hole in the end of each sac, and inserted a piece of steel wire. I then drilled a hole up into the chest of the Tyrant, neatly disguised in the shape of the exoskeleton:
The wire slides into the hole, and the close proximity of the magnets in his arm sockets holds the sac in place quite nicely. Once he's painted, the holes (when the sacs aren't in use) should be practically invisible.
Along the way, I also removed the original magnets in the wing sockets and replaced them with much stronger ones. Didn't bother with pictures of that, though...

Started adding plates to the backs of the wing vanes, and started on his 'thumbs':

The head, torso and legs are all standard Tyrant. For that matter, so are the arms... just reposed a little. Really, the only significant alteration aside from posing is the feet and the addition of wings.

Speaking of wings...
I finished sculpting the thumbs, let them set, went to shave down the claws to a nice claw-ey shape... and one of them had a giant air-bubble in the middle of it.
Luckily, I was cleaning up the shed today, and actually found the Scytal thumbs that I had intended to use in the first place but lost a while back...
So that should be about it for this guy. I'll get some finished and assembled pics tonight when the GS on the thumbs has finished setting... assuming he fits on my lightbox

It looks fantastic, a lot like molochs flying tyrant which imo was the best flyrant evar.
The one critique I would give is to budge the left leg to be more in line with the right, lending to a striking at a target look, right now, with the feet pointing diff directions, it looks as if he is a bit off balance and wobbly, as opposed to on the attack.
It's a very subtle thing but I really think it would completely change the character of the pose to something very aggressive and dangerous.

Lord of Kaith wrote:Absolutely amazing! You'd better do it justice with the paint job, or..or...or....*goes off to plot what he will do*

Fantastic idea with the interchangable bodies! I could totally see changing it according to what army your playing against. Would be a good source of intimidation methinks.
99
Post by: insaniak
That was the general idea behind it, I believe ... I can't take credit for the idea (just the execution of it ), as it was one of the things the buyer specifically asked for. But it's an awesome idea, and one I may have to use again on one of my own big gribblies.
99
Post by: insaniak
A last-minute addition...
This guy was started while the last Tyranid codex was current, when the Lashwhip/Bonesword combo was pretty poor. They're a better option in the current codex, so the buyer asked if it was possible to add them on.
The problem is, they need to still allow the other appropriate weapon combos... So what I came up with was to build a left and right bonesword arm (with a bonesword made from a trimmed down and reversed scytal), so that all of the other weapon options can still combine with it, and add the lashwhip as an extra long whippy tail extension...
Still WIP, obviously...

Got a little more work done on the True-scale Sternguard...
Started with sanding down the torsos to get them nice and smooth and armour-ish.
I had to go back afterwards and do a little gap filling, where the sanding didn't flatten out a few small divots, and a couple of the collars still need some attention
Also started detailing the bionic legs:
And then started in on the arms. These are being converted from assorted Terminator arms with the hydraulics and cabling removed, to make them look a little more like regular power armour. Here's a couple of mock-ups to see how they fit together, with a regular Marine thrown in for scale:
It's a bit of a relief to find that the bolter arms work... The left hand, in case anyone's wondering, is from a 2nd-edition Chaos Marine. They had mammoth-sized hands, so work out pretty well for Terminators.
More soon...
99
Post by: insaniak
A little more Sternguard tinkering. The buyer wanted a Heavy Bolter that looks a little more like a conventional heavy machine gun.
I have made up this prototype, as a sort of 'proof of concept'.
The inset is after a little photoshopping to try to show how it will look finished off, as it has a few minor details still to go on.
99
Post by: insaniak
One member of the Sternguard squad will be a comm specialist, equipped with a vox-pack and auspex (just for show).
The Vox-pack is made from a Cadian backpack, with the bottom and sides trimmed down and the bottom and vents from a Marine backpack added on.
The auspex is a regular auspex top and base added to a Terminator Thunder Hammer hand.

Is it bad that with all of the crazy work on this page, it was the commo backpack that kept my attention? :p It's a simple thing, but a very very cool idea and detail.
99
Post by: insaniak
I've completed basic assembly on the Commtech for the Sternguard squad. The pose is a little rough, as his hand is only tacked on at the moment... I'll adjust it when I'm ready to glue everything in place and sculpt on the missing detail.
I also realised that the entire squad was just a little too 'upright'... so I ripped off one guy's legs, and put him into more of a crouching pose:
Obviously he still needs some gap-filling, and a left hand.
99
Post by: insaniak
I did a little more work on the Sternguard's Heavy Bolter, folding up the bipod and adding a carry handle. Still a little more detail work to go.
Also got the basic assembly done on two more Marines, with bionic arms. The first will be holding a grenade once he has a hand...
And the second, similarly missing hands, just advancing and scanning the nearby shrubbery:

I'm glad that that hand isn't fixed yet, it kind of looks like he's facepalming at the moment.

I've been intending to update the Marines for a week now, but wound up working longer hours than usual at both of my other jobs, so only just got caught up...
I performed an arm swap on the first Heavy Bolter marine, to bring the weapon up into more of a 'bringing to bear' pose, and swapped his arms onto the second heavy marine, who is in more of an advancing pose...
Also finished basic assembly on the remaining two marines:
So now it's on to the detail work...

I should probably mention then that this will be the end of this particular thread, as this was theoretically kind of my last commission. (I say 'theoretically' because that was the intention when I decided to stop taking commissions, but then I decided that I might still take the odd one if it's something I'm excited about, so there may actually be the odd one from time to time...) So this seemed like an opportune time to put this monster of a thread to rest and concentrate more on specific projects, starting with my Plague Demon sculpting practice that's going on over here.
Cheers to all of those who have followed this thread though...

So, it would appear that I am just pathologically incapable of working on a single project at a time...
I had decided to wind this thread up, and started a new thread detailing the sculpting and painting of some Plague Demons that I was playing around with. But then I got sidetracked with a whole bunch of other stuff as I have finally managed to work a regular 40K gaming session into my week and it's got me all excited about modeling again. So rather than clog up the Blogs forum with a dozen different threads for everything that I'm likely to be working on at any given time, I figured I might as well dust this one off and carry on where I left off.
So, about those Plague Demons. About halfway finished on the painting here:
I have been teaching my brother to play 40K, and we've been playing a lot of 750-point games to get him into the swing of it, which gave me a good excuse to put my Red Corsairs back on the table, as they slotted in pretty much perfectly for that size game. Since we're not going to stay that small for ever, though, it also seemed like a good time to finally start expanding them out into a proper army. So, to kick it off in perfect Red Corsair style, I stole a rhino from my Imperial Dragons Veteran Squad, and started repainting. Still WIP, obviously:
.
The plan is to update my Imperial Dragons vehicles to the current style vehicles. I'll be using the original vehicle variants in my Red Corsairs, and (because there are already a couple in there) the 2nd edition variants in my regular Chaos Marine army.
So the Corsairs will also be getting an original Rogue Trader-era Predator that I scored off eBay a couple of weeks ago. Also still WIP:
I also have a squad of mixed 2nd edition and Rogue Trader-era metal terminators who will be getting Red Corsair-ised, just as soon as the simple green does its magic:
And while we're on the Terminator front, I found a whole bunch of original Space Hulk terminators on eBay a couple of years ago, that have been sitting in a box all this time waiting for me to do something with them. I decided that they would fit perfectly into my rather dated Imperial Dragons Lost Company army. This was my first ever 40K army, mostly assembled back in 1994-95. They were cobbled together from whatever I could get my hands on at the time. I have decided to keep going with the 'slightly dodgy' theme, and these Terminators fit in perfectly there:
And finally, (for now at least) I started work on my contribution to the Waaagh: Dakka page:
More soon.

Not sure where the green's coming from, unless the colour balance on my monitor is more whacked out than I realised
So far, it's just boltgun metal washed with black ink. I needed something that was going to look reasonable with minimal effort, but that could still be prettied up on the characters... metalics are the best option there.

What unit and load out is the Space wolf guy?
I have yet used any of those axes and arms, probably should?
99
Post by: insaniak
He's a Grey Hunter. I'll be using a similar pack marking system to regular Space Wolves, although all will be on a red shoulder pad... yellow markings for Blood Claws, grey for Grey Hunters, white for Long Fangs and black for Wolf Guard.
As much as possible, I want to use two-handed axes for close combat weapons, so he has a wrist-mounted bolt pistol to free up his left hand. For Grey Hunters, I'm considering the idea of having a bolt pistol on each arm to represent their bolter, to get around the need to put pistol, CCW and bolter all on the same model.

The problem with leaving stuff sitting around for a year or two without finishing it off is that when you go back to it, you see things that you could have done better...
I dusted off the trio of Ultramarine characters that I started working on some time ago, and wound up replacing a little detail on the Captain. His chest icon was a little wonky, so I ripped it off and replaced it, and the eagle on his left shin was frankly quite terrible. So it also came off, and was replaced. I also started adding the icons on the bottom of his loincloth straps, and roughly fleshed out the fingers on the right hand powerfist.
Meanwhile, the Librarian gained a psychic hood, and some icons on his legs:
For the curious, once they're finished, these guys will be destined for the UTC online store, along with a bunch of other conversions that I am currently working on.

A little more work on my Khornate Champion/Lord/Whatever...
Added iron sights and a new (properly centred) muzzle to the bolter, started adding some toothey trim to the armour plates, and ripped off the axe head as it wasn't working for me... I have an idea for that weapon that should be a lot more fun...
This is another model destined for the store. Watch this space for updates.

I finally started in on my Space Wolves army for Adepticon…
I’m going for a bare-metal and barbaric approach, and calling them the Iron Wolves. In keeping with that, I wanted Thunderwolves that were (a)cheaper than buying mulitple copies of Canis Wolfborn, (b)not as silly-looking as Canis Wolfborn and (c)looked like robot wolves…
Enter the Thundercrusher:
Converted from a plastic Juggernaut. Still needs toes and a little final detailing, but I’m pretty happy with it overall. Now to build 4 more.

Big fan of the thundercrusher for all three reasons you listed (well, mostly the first two). You've done a great job de-chaos-ifying it so far!

Plugging away at basic assembly work. The end is nigh for the units, after which I can start on whatever needs sculpting, and then get some tanks put together.
The first Rune Priest - still waiting on beard and hair:
Scouts:
Dreadnought:
Bloodclaws:
Grey Hunters production line:
To help differentiate a little on the table, the Bloodclaws are left a little more plain than their Grey Hunter Brethren, although I've tried for as much variation as possible with armour throughout the army. The Bloodclaws also all have helmets on, whereas the Hunters will be a mix of helmets and bare heads.
Due to time constraints, I wound up discarding the wrist-mounted bolt pistols.

Very nice work, dude. I hope you've trained your Space Puppies with a trigger word! Oh, are they regular Space Wolves or like 13th Company or something? Look at me trying to act all knowledgeable. I read a small excerpt on the 13th Company recently and was very intrigued by Space Wolves for the first time ever.
99
Post by: insaniak
I wanted the Iron Wolves' vehicles to be a little distinctive, with the idea that they are a Chapter that spends a little time customising their machinery. With that in mind, my eye fell on the Land Raider Armoured Proteus from Forgeworld. This is an updated version of the original Rogue Trader-era Land Raider design, with added armoured sponsons.
The only problem is that the Proteus doesn't have a front assault ramp... And given that I had been trying to build the Wolves to fit WYSIWYG as closely as possible, that obviously wasn't acceptable. I also wanted to run a Redeemer in my Adepticon list, which meant a little weapons swapping was going to be required.
So, a bit of hacking and gluing later:
At this point, initial assembly is nearly complete. The weapons are magnetised so I can swap them out for other Land Raider configurations later. The top panel is also magnetised, so I can just lift out the actual mount for the hull weapon if I need to. I'm using Chaos autolaunchers as the frag assault launchers (also magnetised so they can be removed when using it as a regular land raider), and will fit a regular smoke launcher to the top hull. Automatically Appended Next Post: LostSoulCasey'sLaw wrote: Oh, are they regular Space Wolves or like 13th Company or something?

Lovely, Is that 4 Missile Launchers? I've been seriously considering a similar squad set up for my new BA. What's your experience with them and do you have any tips on the rest of their kit up(the Sergeant for example)? I'd be tempted to throw in a power fist but it feels like a points drain especially with what appears to be a very cost effective unit.
99
Post by: insaniak
To be honest, I have no idea how effective the Long Fangs will be. So far, I've only been playing this army at 400 points, testing my Combat Patrol list for Adepticon (Rune Priest, small squad of Grey Hunters, 3 Thunderwolves and a Razorback).
At this stage, the full list probably won't see the table until the weekend after next, as I've entered a local tournie to get in some gaming practice for Adepticon. So I have a deadline of friday week to get these guys painted to at least a standard that I wouldn't be embarrased putting them on the table...
Made a start on the weekend, although I had an unexpected change to the colour scheme when I discovered that the Devlan Mud I used on the first 16 guys was actually Badab Black... and now I'm out, so am hoping my replacement order arrives in the next day or two.
Pictorial update soon...

SO, a while between updates... I've been frantically painting away at my Iron Wolves whenever I have time, while trying to squeeze in some practice games with them on the side. I had been intending to post WIP shots as I was painting, but that obviously hasn't happened...
However, I have started in on the display board, and got myself a little more organised. So, for starters, a rough mud-map on paper:
Transferred onto 3mm MDF:
Layers cut out of MDF:
And then spacing added with foam core:
Minis in place to check for room, and to mark out base holes:
And said holes drilled in:
Next up: glue it all together and start texturing.

25mm spade bit for the smaller holes, adjustable hole cutter (goes in a power drill) for the big ones.
Managed to mess one of the 25mm holes up when the board moved on me, but I just drilled an extra and will cover the dodgy one with a rock

Hopefully coming soon
The display board looks like it is coming along nicely - what sort of style is it going to be?
It will be mostly sandy gravel/rock to match the bases, with industrial-looking metal retaining walls to keep the iron theme running through. Nothing too elaborate, but will hopefully frame the army nicely.

woo I have another good question.

Venerable Dreadnought tucked into the corner...
Long Fangs:

The 'tassles' are just rolled out of green stuff. For the seals, I made up three little textured stamps... roll out a ball of green stuff, sit it on the top of the tassle, push the stamp into it like you would with sealing wax. Rough up the edges a little with a tool.
Painted red and bone, washed with Devlan Mud, and then the text added with a micro pen and hit with a good coat of sealer.

Cool conversion insaniak. It has a nice feel to it.
99
Post by: insaniak
Yeah, I'm really happy with the chunkier look to the front. It's quite distinctive compared to my previous quads, but has more of a solid, assault vehicle feel.
I'll get a shot of the heavy weapon mount tonight.... It's basically just the attack bike sidecar axle with some plastic rod pivots added, and a magnet to hold the weapon on.
99
Post by: insaniak
Some sanding and gap filling going on... and the promised shot of the heavy weapon mount:
And a little further along. At this point, it just needs the rest of the trim on the front mudguards, a little putty work, and some shoulder pads for the crew.
Meanwhile, with Quartermaster II next weekend, I realised that this weekend is my last chance to get my army updated. Not a lot to do... my revised 1750 point list drops out the Dreadnought and a Grey Hunter, swaps the plasma gunner for a melta, and swaps one of the Thunderwolves for a Twolf Lord. So I need to do a weapon swap, plug a couple of now-superfluous holes in my display board, and for the Lord I decided to bling up an existing Twolf rather than build another one at short notice. So here's where he's at so far...
21358
Post by: Dysartes
How do you intend to plug the gaps in the display board, insaniak?
99
Post by: insaniak
The Grey Hunter slot can just be covered over with a rock or something. The Dread's hole is a little trickier... I didn't previously have my objective markers on the display board anywhere, as they are a little boring. But I'm building a 'dispenser' for them, which will sit over the Dreadnought hole.
99
Post by: insaniak
Progress on the Wolf Lord... Hair and beard repainted, decoration added on the other side, on the Twolf's head, and on the backpack (which doesn't really show up in this pic), and the blade of the spear broken off (which may have been accidental, but I'm not admitting anything.)
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
Very nice insaniak. What happened to is backpack? Fittings get loose?
99
Post by: insaniak
No, I ripped it off so I could get at the shoulder pads. Also made it easier to paint the knotwork on the backpack... You can barely make it out against the glare, but the flat panel on the back of the pack has the same design on it as on the Twolf's shoulder. It's also on each of the Lord's shins, and on the front of the wolf's shoulder hump.

So, I got a little side-tracked, as I had an idea for a gunship to fill the Storm Talon spot in my Imperial Dragons army. Introducing the Stormclaw:
Still a WIP (needs the other gun pod added on the right side, and either a 4th tail wing or a landing skid on the back section. Canopy glass will be added in when the vehicle is painted.
The tail assembly rotates. Just because.
A more frontal shot with the tail in normal flight mode:
The lascannons are magnetised. I'll add in missile pods and heavy bolter pods when I get some bits for them.
It's probably not quite as true to the Space Marine aesthetic as it could be... but then I don't think the Stormtalon is either. And I don't really care... it was an idea that was cool in my head, and I love how it is turning out

Haha, looks cool (also looks like one of the ships from Lost in Space http://www.igorstshirts.com/blog/conceptships/lost_in_space_concept.jpg )

That is very cool insaniak! I was also reminded of one of the LiS fighters (you only get to see them at the very beginning of the movie).

Awesome! Really nice use of the drop pod wings; they definitely work better on a SM vehicle than on some other projects in which I've seen people use them.

Yeah, the Lost in Space fighter was the main inspiration for this fella...
+1 internets for anyone who can pick where the cockpit comes from

Please make a scout-termie that looks like Ripley. You owe it to the universe.
"Get away from her you B****!" - best line EVER!

Although a Sentinel-sized version would be a little more Aliens...

He did ask about a "scout-termie that looks like Ripley" though - you can't get anymore exact than your stuff!

I didn't know Ripley was a dude!
Have I been missing something?
(perhaps you should do a sentinel sized one to use as a dreadnought, driven by a woman. would be fething awesome!)

You did know that there are no female Space Marines though.

Small update on the Stormclaw... Added the second cannon, and the last tail fin. Also moved the flight stem to run up through the rear, replacing the original spindle. So the wings still rotate, but the stem is no longer impeding the chin gun.

Mate, just been through your entire blog while watching the Euro final and I struggled to focus on Spain destroying the Italians!! Awesome work in here, makes my plasticard work seem suddenly very amateur. At least I can try and aspire to gain your level...

Coming along beautifully insaniak. You have me thinking evil thoughts about the two pods I have lying around that I'll probably never get around to painting...

ZOMG stormclaw = Starwars B-WING!!!
stealing IP from the father and mother of SCI-FI!!!!
hehe just kidding Insaniak, although i do see some B-Wing features like the rotating wing... (?)
did it serve as inspiration or is it random coincidence?

Post by: Gitsplitta
Apparently it was inspired by the fighters in Lost in Space.

No, much lamer than that...
DijnsK wrote:...although i do see some B-Wing features like the rotating wing... (?)

The B-wing was sort of part of the inspiration, although the B-wing's cockpit is on an out-rigger, rather than in the centre. As mentioned before, it was based more on the Lost in Space bubble fighter, although only for the basic idea rather than specific design.

So my Iron Wolves have now seen action in 4 fifth edition tournaments, and transitioned into 6th edition with Quartermaster III. They’re still a work in progress, but for each one I’ve added a little more detail, and tweaked a little here and there to slowly get them to where I want them to be…
Here’s a more or less finished teaser of the Wolf Lord:

Finally got my attack quad finished... so that would be the Scorpion MkIV:
For anyone who's interested, it's up for grabs in the UTC online store, along with the Ultramarines Captain. You can find them here.

Dear Iain,
Your skill with plasticard is offensive and makes me feel bad about myself. Cease modelling immediately.

walker90234 wrote::O how you make?
You might need to be more specific...
It's basically a regular Marine bike with an attack bike sidecar reshaped to fit in over the rear mudguard, and new mudguard assemblies built from plasticard.

Quad - lite...
I actually did a few of these up last year, as demos for a quad bike-building tutorial for the first Auscon. One of them was painted up for my Imperial Dragons, and the others have been sitting around waiting to join the party. With us moving house later this month, I decided it was better to clear some space in the cabinet and sell the unpainted ones off. I can always build more later
So these guys are up with the Captain and the Attack Quad in the UTC online store, along with a bunch of freshly listed Dark Vengeance components. [/shameless plug]

So, far too long between updates, what with moving house and getting prepared for a new carbon-based lifeform in the house... But I decided that it was time for my little gaming group to dust off Necromunda and see if it still holds up to a good kicking...
I have a completed Escher and Orlock gang, but needed a few extra gangs for other players... So after a rummage around in the bits boxes, and a bit of prep work and undercoating, they're on their way:
Goliaths (mostly the starter set plastics with a few modifications here and there) and Ratskins, with Schaefer's Last Chancers filling in as Van Saars. More soon...

Goliath Gang with most of their base colour in place. The leader has also had a wash at this point, just because I got impatient and wanted to see how he would look...
I deliberately went for a fairly basic scheme with these guys, because I just don't like the Goliath models enough to spend any large amount of time on them. They're purely being done to have a spare gang for other people to use.

Post by: Yggdrasil
The leader with just a wash looks much better than the others !
Did you make a few headswaps ? (HB dude, for instance)
43612
Post by: Rawson
I think there are quite a few SW heads in there. Nice to mix things up
99
Post by: insaniak
Yeah, there are a few Space Wolf heads scattered through. The Heavy was a second-hand model, and the previous owner had nicked the head and heavy bolter for a Chaos Marine conversion, so I had to find replacements. The other couple of head swaps were just to add a little variety to the plastic Starter set models. There's also one in there who had his legs swapped for Gorkamorka ork legs.
I'm building some Juves out of Chaos Marauder parts, but they'll be in the next wave. I want to get the Ratskins and Schaefer's not-Delaques done first.

Post by: insaniak
Small update on the Goliaths. Base colours all finished, and initial washes applied.
There are a few 'crazy eyes' here and there that I need to go back and fix, the leader's melta cabling needs a brown wash, and the weapons and boots need another layer or two of black wash, but while that's happening and I'm figuring out basing, they're effectively table-ready. So at this point I'll probably put these guys aside and start in on the Ratskins.

They're gangers... "crazy eyes" seems appropriate.

No, I'm still here... just been a while between updates due to an increased level of baby in the house.
Hoping to get back to work soon, as I need the flyer and some scouts for a tournament next month
And for anyone still wondering, the cockpit is from an old Seaquest DSV model kit. A flatbed sub for lugging cargo around. I picked a few of them up cheap years ago, intending to turn them into antigrav cargo haulers for scenery... but this seemed like a more productive use

Soon... I have some second-hand scouts bathing in simple green as we speak, and am just planning out how to swap the fighter over to a Dark Talon analogue and then finish it off.

You mean the stripping around the outside? It's just plastic edge stripping, from the builders section at the local hardware store.

Great plasticard skills, although i would have added a slightly larger tube over the current rod, now it looks like they have no front-wheel suspension.

Totally agree... However the point of that particular conversion was for something that relatively inexperienced modellers could build in a one-hour tutorial. So it was kept fairly simple deliberately.
