@WM - Legend, thanks mate! every vote helps (im up to 37 now, quite a bit ahead but its early days so far)

@Mark - Hahah, I'm able to invoke dual emotions in one hit. I would not have thought it possible but sounds like a compliment so I'll take it I wouldn't say I'm productive, I usually only get about an hour to an hour and a half to paint/model a night so I try to make the most out of the time I get.

@Blackhand - Awesome thanks man! I wouldn't say I 'frequent' the Silvia park GW but it is the closest GW to where I live so I do pop down there on the odd occasion Whens your tourny next year? whats the point size etc etc?

@Stoned - such a definite command, how could I decline!

Update: More on the tac marine done last night, small bits done on the DK legs but nothing really worth posting yet.

But I did get my fluff finished, I'll post the entire lot incase people wonder what happened to get to that point.

Spoiler:

“So how are you not dead?” Koali was snapped out of his reverie by a voice nearby. “Say again?” Koali uttered, his voice was mechanical and deep, it echoed in the hollow chamber where he was resting. “How is it that you are not dead? Due to the amount of injuries you’ve had…” The voice belonged to one of the imperial guardsmen that had come aboard the Cruiser ‘Intolerance’ when their attack had failed. “Quite the insolent one aren’t you?” Koali paused just long enough for the soldier to shift awkwardly “Is that any way to address a Techmarine of our most honorable Emperor?” The soldier looked up at the towering form of Koali and sneered “Oh wise and most venerable Techmarine of the honorable emperor, how is it you’re not dead?” Koali reach forward to grab the wretch and teach him some manners however the soldier ducked back quickly and moved behind one of the chambers support pillars.

“Look here you insignificant bag of flesh, I’ve lived for over three centuries, fought in hundreds of wars and have sustained countless injuries to protect the empire you so carelessly insult!” Koali’s metallic voice now was loud enough to attract the attention of others in the chamber, they came over to investigate the commotion. Noticing the small gathering the soldier quickly changed his tune “Look, I was only interested because with so much bionics you surely should have died long ago, yet here you are in front of us! And I want to know what happened”

Realizing that he would not catch the soldier with doing some serious damage to the surrounding area; Koali sighed, the sound came echoed out of his vox box sounding like an angry growl as he strode back to the alcove he was previously in, he then turned to face the small crowd who were waiting. “So, you want to know how I got to where I am, closer to the Omnissiah? Well stay a while and listen and you will know what I know”

Koali cleared his throat, “As you may know the Grey Knight; Brother Captain Stern, had combined the remnants of all loyal forces into a single army and ordered that all armor be painted grey to differentiate us from the chaos supporters who had turned during the beginning of our war.” What you may not know is that our early battles were small scale, a hit and run here, a surprise attack there, only a few units were ever engaged and it was just using bolters and other small caliber weapons. However it was noticeably escalating, I was moving more into a direct support role on the battlefield rather than an after battle support fixing broken armor and weapons. It was when we started to use the larger weapons and tanks that Stern knew something had been testing us, learning our tactics, finding our weaknesses.

I’ve survived due to my bionics, the first; my arm was grafted to me after an ambush while we were moving towards the capital palace. The attack was all a blur but I do remember this, the cultists moved quickly. They came at us from the sides with chainswords and laspistols, our amour withstood the low powered laspistols, but when they got in close the chainswords were just getting through, they kept on coming. I was pulled to the ground by four of them and while I was strangling the life out of one of them the other three leapt on my arm and started to saw, by the time we had cleared the ambush five of our marines were dead and over half of us were greatly wounded. I created my own arm and it’s served me well.

I received my next bionic, my legs, after the tank I was repairing was destroyed, I was repairing the main turret on one of the force’s razorbacks when our position was shelled by chaos marines. I was thrown from the top by a blast that wrecked the Razorback, fortunate as I was not to be killed, the turret followed me off of the tank, I ended pinned by my legs and it took four marines to move it off of me. By that time the damage had been done, Senior Techmarine Onox constructed my leg and I could not have asked for better.

I got my cranium bionics next, this one I do remember vividly however I understand this makes no sense having suffered a head wound. We were attacking a bastion held by approximately four score of chaos supporters, the environment had just turned and there was rain, lots of rain. I was tasked with close support of the Predator tank ‘Sularo’ it had taken a Krak missile from the battlements and one of its side sponsons was heavily damaged, I was working to fix the energy coils so it could rejoin the battle when the vehicle was rocked by another small explosion and I was thrown aside; my helmet ripped from my armor. As I was getting to my feet up a second larger explosion came from inside the tank, I was told later that a lucky round had penetrated the frontal armor and had detonated the tanks internal ammunition stores. The side sponson was ejected directly into my stomach and came to rest on my legs, Omnissiah be praised that due to my legs already having been made of metal I felt nothing however the sponson had pinned me down. Shrapnel from the ammunition inside imbedded into my head and I was knocked unconscious. The next thing I remember is being woken up aboard the Strike Cruiser by the Grey Knight apothecary ‘Vertz’ and being asked to complete the first four rites of remembrance. Onox and Vertz had both done their very best work and I have not noticed any decrease in my mental faculties.

Koali’s giant frame shifted and he looked at his mechanical fingers as he flexed them; attempting to recall how had had gotten his last gift from the Omnissiah. “Giving your life in the service of the Emperor is something we are all prepared to do, you and I know this to be true” Koali addressed the crowd with a fire in his one good eye “I was certain death had come for me when we were set upon by red skin demons. Our strike on the summoning ritual had started off well, we had advanced to the perimeter of the site; our suppressing fire blasting apart their defenders. There was however a static in the air which made the most of our electronics start to function at elevated levels; it made me feel very uneasy. Koali paused, formulating the next words and weighing them before speaking. “We were given the order to advance on the inner circle, as soon as we had stepped over the perimeter line we must have triggered their trap. Flames leapt up around us, the ground rent open and unspeakable horrors burst forth. I admit I was fearful of what was coming, however the rest of the Grey Knights showed no fear and charged the incoming masses; the fire only felled a few. I instructed the gun servitor with me to open fire into their ranks and the loading servitor to wait for them to reach us.

I remember emptying my bolter into one large red skinned demon as it bore down on me; my rounds did nothing but aid in making it angrier. When it tackled me it was like being hit by a Squiggoth, we wrestled but it ended up on pinning me to the ground its mass defied its lithe frame, it started to hit me with its large fists and with the sharp spikes it dented and cracked my armor with each hit. I looked into its black eyes and saw only a blackness and with its snarl I was under no mistake that it had an intense burning hatred for us mortals. Suddenly the loading arm from one of my servitors gripped the demons neck and pulled it backwards off of me. With this respite it gave me enough time to get my servo arm and grip the demons head in its clamps. I rerouted the power from my pack packs energy cortex to the servo arm in an attempt to crush the demons head, it popped like a balloon, horns and gore went everywhere.

Sadly the servitor didn’t last much longer and I watched its body getting pulled into quarters by a large pack of smaller red skinned demons these ones were much more squat and muscular than my previous kill. As they finished with my servitors and turned their gaze on to me, I quickly reloaded and rapid fired into the pack. I managed to take down three of them however they were almost without number and I was set upon and dragged to my knees. The smaller demons were strong, their arms rippled with muscle and sinew, they started to pull apart my broken armor and started to destroy what lay beneath, they ripped my helmet off I was struck down and everything went black. Koali stopped talking, the chamber was silent, and all eyes were on his red segmented armor then to his scarred face.
Koali continued “I was technically dead. I have no idea how they got my body away from the little demons or even what convinced the Emperor I was worth saving… All I know is that I am still here, still fighting for the sector and that I’m being looked out by something higher” Koali picked up the Thermoplas cover for his sarcophagus he was working on with his massive power fist and he pressed the cover to the front of his life support frame, the gaskets hissed and expelled gases as it formed a tight seal. “I also know that with this dreadnaught body, those little demons won’t stand a chance now!”

Thanks again for checking in

Whoa, seven responses! amazing.

@Mark - I assume you're referring to the fluff piece, if so cheers if not cheers none the less

@Rev. Reiko - Thanks for taking the time to read it

@DSS - Thanks, it's my third try at fluff, so if Ice Angel's Fluff is anything to go by mine should get better.

@Vit - Perfect, that's what I was trying to achieve, there are small little parts which hopefully convey the whole part of the story on what he was.

@Stoned - Almost, I'm not up to the body yet, but once I do it'll be looking awesome I'm sure of it!

@Gitsplitta - I'm honored to have you comment on my blog, your Doom Eagle blog was the reason I signed up to Dakka.

@CLS - Cheers!

Update: got a little bit done last night, mainly on the DK's feet and hand, There still plenty of inscription to be done on the feet/arm but I will do them when the model is together to avoid smudging (A very real threat might I add)

Also, I posted this on the previous page, it's still valid and for those who have voted, I thank you very very much! I'm currently leading but I really want to keep the lead so every like will count.

I've submitted my Paladin Terminator to my LFGS's Facebook model painting competition (model had to be painted this month) and whoever gets the most votes wins (not sure what you win, probably nothing except bragging right's)

So I would be deeply grateful if anyone reading this could vote for my model:

You will have to like their page first

Then go into the comp and click on like for my model

The legs do look a bit silly on their own.

Loving the red casings on those weapons though! The litanies on them...in the first picture they fooled me! I thought you'd done some sort of fancy spiral pattern on them!

@Broken - I agree, whats worse is the legs are the wrong way around as well (armor on the inside of the thigh)

@DSS - Thanks, I was hoping the red casing would break up the massive sea of grey, looks like its working.

@Graven - Cheers mate, the white is painted on, I havent been able to find a white micron pen small enough for my tastes so its all a fine brush.

Anther bit of fluff for those who are interested:

Section 3 - Snatch and Grab

Spoiler:

Part 1

Koali was in the ships Mechanicus Forge; he had been repairing damages all afternoon and had made quite a lot of headway with the repairs. The rooms return cart was half full now and he looked over to the fresh batch of new arrivals, mainly small arms and a couple of heavy weapons. His work bench was currently clear so he moved the damages cart over to his bench and moved the top portion on to his desk and laid them out, He took his helmet off and placed it on the bench and started to sort through the damage tags. One of the ships scribes came to the door of the forge and addressed Koali.

“Sir, orders are in five minutes located in the war room, Brother Captain Stern has requested your presence”

“Very well, I’ll be heading over now” Koali responded, he wondered why he was being summoned to orders, this was not normal, only the most senior Techmarine on the ship were typically required. The Scribe gave the sign of the Aquila and disappeared down the hall. Koali finished reading the damage notes on the weapons and headed to the war room.

Koali was the second to last to enter, Stern followed behind him. The war room was half full, the officers and sergeants currently not on missions were gathered to receive their orders from Brother Captain Stern. The walls were a soft cream which looked out of place compared to the bland metallic table in the center of the room. Stern moved to the head of the table, he leaned on the table edge and started to read a data slate full of information. To his right sat the Senior Techmarine Onox who nodded at Koali when he entered. On Stern’s left was the command squads veteran sergeant Lokni, after him were the sergeant’s from the tactical squad one, two and four. Squad three was currently on deployment. The assault squad sergeant and Captain Lirael were on the opposite side of the table, with a spare seat between Lirael and Onox.

Not everyone was seated however, the forces Chaplain was standing under one of the eaves behind Stern, his eyes studying every marine in the room. It was customary that for these briefings the combat armor and weapons were not worn and every one bar Koali was attired in simple robes. Feeling out of place at the briefing Koali moved over to the spare chair near Onox and took the seat.

“Welcome brothers, I’ll try to be brief so we can get back into it, the first mission is to pick up the Governor from his palace planet side” Sterns voice had a twinge of disgust at having to issue this mission.

“Why in Terra has the governor gone planet side?” The words slipped out of Onox’s mouth as he shook his head. ”Doesn’t he realize that the entire planet is wracked in war!”

Brother Captain Stern looked at Onox silently regarding his outburst “it would seem..” he paused as he weighed his words carefully “That our esteemed guest, the Governor, is under the impression he is safe no matter where he is”

Onox shook his head yet again “well if he feels so safe why are we going to get him?”

“Because…” a deep voice interrupted

“… without the Governor, there will be no one to command this system when we rescue it” The voice came from the forces Chaplain.

“Then why is it our job to save him from himself?” Sgt Emorej of the Squad one interjected.

“I agree with you all, but as Sylekta has advised, without the governor, all the saving we do here will mean nothing without structure afterwards” Stern’s words were quiet and controlled.

Everyone in the war room went silent. Ever since the command was given to have all forces unit under a singular leader, there had been more than a few unhappy marines and they were more than happy to voice their concerns. It look like the only thing holding everything together was Stern’s leadership, of course is reputation surely didn’t hurt either. Stern moved back from the table and walked towards the Hologlobe, he stepped down into the semicircular pit and keyed on the globe. A map of the sector sprung into life on the wall and Stern zoomed in on the part of the sector where Couture was, after a few more key presses, blue travel lines intersected the planet and continued out of view.

“As you can see, this sector feeds both hardware and troops to the Sabbat worlds, without this planet those forces will be cut off completely”

Stern now turned to face the briefing table, his old face a stark contrast to the light grey of his robe.

“We will go and get the Governor, we will save him from himself. Once we have rescued this sector I feel a quick chat to the local inquisitor may be in order”

The majority of the room had a small laugh, the thought of the Governor being interrogated by an Inquisitor seemed fitting for what they were going to go through to get him.

“So how do we ‘convince’ the governor to come with us?” asked Vet. Sgt Lokni

Stern turned back to the hologlobe, he zoomed into the main city and highlighted two areas

“A night drop, three Rhino’s away from the city here” Stern pointed to a plain just north of the city “This will be followed up with an approach and ‘extraction’ on dusk, there is no convincing needed here brothers, just a simple snatch, grab then get out”

“Deployed forces Captain?” Sgt Cromat of Tac Squad two asked.

“This one should be relatively easy but I’m not about to go in under manned, two squads should do it” Stern looked around the room, extraction missions were quite boring and his Sergeants were all looking for more action.

“Are there any volunteers?” Stern asked

Sylekta deep voice spoke out “I’ll go. I need to get off of this cruiser at least once during this campaign, and who knows, perhaps my presence will cow the Governor into coming along quietly” he chuckled quietly at the thought.

“Great, your leadership may be needed if any of the brothers are looking disturbed” Stern thought back to the fact that many marines had lost their minds when planet side and started to fire on their own battle brothers, the presence of the chaplain should greatly help.

“In case the transports need repairs, I should go” Senior Techmarine Onox stated

Stern looked at Onox “Sadly brother I am in need of your services up here, I need you to work on fortifying one of our Nemisis Dreadknights, Elvale feels a little…. out in the open. Why not send Koali?”

“That is acceptable, Koali is more than capable enough for this. I look forward to seeing what I can do with the Dreadknight” There was a gleam in Onox’s eye that that having Koali summoned here was no mistake.

Great thought Koali, just when I was looking forward to getting some repair time on the damaged tanks I get sent on a fetch mission

No one else spoke, the sergeants were not keen to commit to the mission when they felt their squads were more valuable committing to a raid or to a destroy mission, not going to get the male.

Stern looked around the room “Well, I guess I will have to choose now”

Stern pointed at two Sergeants “ Sgt Jutan and Sgt Emorej both of your squads will accompany Sylekta and Koali on this one”

Both of the Sergeants were about to object however Stern’s gaze gave them second thoughts.

“Enemy forces?” Captain Lirael asked

Stern looked back at the hologlobe, he depressed three buttons and the image on the wall changed “At this point there is a high chance of local militia made up of traitor guardsmen and civilians. There have been reports of Chaos Space Marines as you get closer to the palace however as you are approaching at night this should be of no concern” as Stern mentioned the enemy forces an outline appeared on the wall of each one with a small layout of potential weapons and armor.

“Will we have Grey Knight support?” Sgt Jutan from Tac Squad four asked

Stern paused “…Currently the remaining Grey Knight forces are either deployed or are undergoing repairs, this one is without support”

“What if we encounter demons sir?” Jutan responded

“Then we kill them!” Emorej bellowed smashing his fist into the table. The others cheered their support, all except Jutan whose stare never left Stern.

“The mission details will be sent to squad sergeants for review. Prepare your squads, I want standard weapon load outs, be ready to deploy in one hour” Stern touched another button on the hologlobe and entered details into the machine.

Stern brought up another map, this one was of a weapons factory highlighted with at least twenty red triangles throughout the structure.

Koali could see that Emorej and Jutan were both unhappy they weren’t going to be able to fight in that battle.

“You four are dismissed now” Stern turned back to face them.

Koali, Sylekta, Emorej and Jutan all stood up. They gave the sign of the Aquila to Stern then left the room.

@Vit - Cheers

@Ice - Thanks man, it means a lot! more fluff it is then.

Spoiler:

Part 2

On the way down the corridor to the armament chambers Koali over heard the sergeants talking

“Seems a complete waste of time sending two squads to get the Governor” Jutan scowled

“Agreed, this could be left to Imperial Guard if you ask me” Emorej point out

“Brothers! We have been tasked with a mission. One that in the long term would see the Imperium grow stronger and more secure, is this not valuable?” the deep voice from Sylekta caused the two sergeants to stop in their tracks.

“Yes, I live to serve the Emperor and the Imperium. I live to see its enemies defeated to that it shall remain strong” Emorej put his fist against his chest making the sign of the Templar’s honor

“I too live to serve the Imperium and to see its enemies crushed” Jutan chimed in

“So what’s the problem then?” Sylekta asked them both, he looked into both their eyes and they both could not hold his gaze.

“There is no problem Chaplain” Emorej said looking at the chaplain’s boots

“Yes, no problem here either” Jutan said behind gritted teeth while looking at the wall.

Koali chuckled to himself, he had been to see the chaplain once before and he remembered the intense gaze the Chaplain had, it was as if the Chaplain could look right through him into his soul, it was a very intense moment. The thought of the two sergeants squirming under Sylekta’s gaze seemed funny for some reason.

Arriving at the Armament hall Koali plugged into the nearest data terminal and downloaded the mission details, he opened up the document then compared required hardware to that which was currently serviceable.

Inside the Cruiser’s database he could see that there were currently on board four serviceable Rhino’s and two serviceable Razorbacks. Whether or not the database was up to date was another matter entirely. Koali checked available space transports, there was a total of five Thunderhawk Transporters in the fleet, one was currently undergoing maintenance another two were out on deployment with the force, luckily the other two were available. Koali selected both and registered them against the mission log along with three Rhino’s, the acceptance nodes flashed on screen. He had at least forty five minutes before the Rhino’s would have to be loaded and there were plenty of repairs to complete on damaged equipment so he headed back to the Mechanicus forge.

*just a heads up I currently have about 5,500 words written for this one (and they haven't left the ship yet) but not sure if I want to dump it all in one post because it would be very TL; DR so I might just post a chunk each time to spread it out - I'll post the full story on my fluff blog after its done)

Yeah, i'd try to chunk it out if you could. If you post too much at once a lot of readers will stop and come back at another time or miss it all together. Believe me I know!

Sweet, that sounds like a good plan then

Spoiler:

Part 3

Koali was back in his element now, the workshop was well lit with high wattage bulbs set into the high ceiling, the north wall was covered in tools and pieces of metal all the tools had a red outline behind it making it easy to return tools to their proper places. The east wall had bins full of spare parts; the west wall had a long window which opened up to a long hallway with multiple targets at the far end. In the center of the room were four work benches arranged in to a square pattern, the walls were a bare metal. On Koali’s work bench were two faulty bolters, a power sword which was having power issues, a lascannon which had somehow fried its internal wiring, two bolt pistols with faulty safety catches and a missile launcher with a jammed rocket in the tube. In the damages cart there was plenty more however these items should take him the least amount of time to get repaired.

Koali stood in front of his bench looking at the weapons, the task at hand was never ending. He felt like he was always here and was always alone. The ship suddenly felt even more cold than usual. Still he was a Techmarine and a Space marine, the life we live is one that will end in service of the Emporer. He picked his head up, even though he might not get through all the repairs, his brothers depended on him so he would do all he could.
Koali uttered the prayer or repairs to the Ommisiah and picked up one of the damaged bolters, looking at its damage tag, this one was reported to jam frequently. As he was taught, the weapon should be checked in case there was a live round loaded so he pulled the bolt parts to the rear and inspected the chamber, there were no rounds in the chamber or in the magazine. He removed the magazine and returned the bolt parts back to its original position. Using his servo arm’s pin claw he removed holding pin which kept the red cover over the main body of the bolter. With this removed he twisted the barrel clockwise at the same time depressing the barrel holding lug and pulled the barrel out. He inspected the inside of the barrel and noted there was score at top, this could catch rounds but not jam it. His servo harness reached over and took the barrel out of his hand and hooked it up to his bench lathe, he tapped the lathes power button and the barrel started to spin faster and faster. Once it hit the right speed he pressed another button on the lathe and small arm extending through the center and started to re-plane the inside of the barrel. While this was happening Koali inspected the gas recoil parts, typically this would get damaged or blocked and this could cause jams. He pushed down on the top of the first gas piston and twisted it clockwise then pulled out the first chamber, he looked into the space that was left and he could see carbon build up blocking the exit port. “Poor weapon maintenance” Koali said out loud, he reached over and picked up one of the half full cleaning bottles and squirted in a small amount of the liquid in to the hole, using a small wire brush he gave the chamber a quick clean and the carbon fell away. He could now see into the next chamber and suspected it was equally full of carbon.

He replaced the first chamber and locked it into position. He then spun the weapon one hundred and eighty degrees and pushed in the second piston and turned it counter clockwise and removed the second chamber, this one was in the same state as the first one. After cleaning this chamber he put the gas piston back in. The barrel had been re-planed and he inspected the work, he was happy that it was clear. He put the barrel back onto the bolter and turned it anti clockwise till he heard a click. With this in place he refitted the outer covering and slid the locking pin back into place.

Normal drill detailed that after repairs weapons have to be test fired so Koali loaded one of the test magazines from under his workbench and headed over to the hole in the west wall, the test firing range. After repeating the rites of firing he squeezed off the clip into a target dummy and the bolter didn’t jam. Satisfied the repairs were sufficient he put the bolter onto the return cart near the entrance, he added a note onto the bolter to reprimand the poor weapon maintenance he had discovered and headed back to his work bench. Checking the clock that repair had taken him five minutes “Not bad” he thought, he had done quicker. He wondered what could have caused the owner of the bolter to miss maintaining his weapon, he knew the force spent eighty percent of their time planet side either fighting or moving. Koali felt a rush of excitement, he was going on a mission, there may not be any fighting but he was going to be deployed. He thought of Onox giving him a look when Stern had mentioned his name, the older Techmarine must have sensed that Koali was getting restless always being in the forge. Onox had always looked out for him, ever since he was chosen to attend training on Mar’s, he had even warned him about ‘The Mercuralogist” and to always bow your head when speaking to him.

He grabbed the other bolter, this one was reported to have the magazine continuously fall out when conducting battle drills. Interesting thought Koali bolters was not known to ever have this issue, he pulled the bolt parts to the rear and inspected the chamber, there were no rounds in the chamber or in the magazine. He removed the magazine and returned the bolt parts back to its original position. He spun the bolter over and inspected the magazine housing, there were no disconcerting flaws in the metal or release mechanism. He checked the front edge of the release slide there was scuff marks on the slider, there was also paint on the slider bar that’s odd though Koali. He held the bolter across his chest and checked clearance from his armor. Plenty there, certainly nothing that would hit the slider. Koali fitted the magazine and put it back on the bench, this one would take some more work to figure out. His thoughts went back to Onox again, since their arrival in the system Onox had been helping Koali and the young adepts with repairs, but in the last two months Onox had been called away time and time again to work on special projects under the command of Stern until it seemed he was never in the forge. While he felt happy that the older Techmarine was being recognized for his outstanding mind and being given opportunities to create new STC variants, he had felt a little left behind, someone who had to pick up the left overs. Koali shook his head, thoughts of personal gain were wrong and he knew it, one day when he was more experienced, He too would get a chance to prove what he was worth.

He grabbed both bolt pistols next, faulty safety catches were a common occurrence, the bars that slid across to block the trigger would bend if one of the battle brothers tried to fire with vigor without disengaging the safety first. Both the pistols were checked for rounds and their magazines removed, the next step was to dismantle to get the grip off the pistols, Koali pulled the bolt parts to the rear and locked them in place with a holding pin, he then turned the pistol over and using his servo arms pin claw he pushed a locking pin from the top of the grip, this allowed the grip to slide forward and it disengaged the firing pin at the same time. With the pistol grip free he was now able to unhook the bent bar from its slide, it took some wiggling and some force and he managed to extract the bar. He fetched two new bars from one of the parts bins on the far side of the workshop fitted the first new pin. He slid the safety leaver to safe and tried to pull the trigger, the bar successfully stopped the trigger from moving back. When trying to pry the second bar from the other grip Koali had to resort to a small welding torch to cut the metal as it was to warped to be pulled from its slide. After fitting the bolt pistols back together he loaded another two test clips into them and fired both of them down their practice range. Happy that the repairs were sufficient he put both weapons onto the returns cart, the repairs had taken him nine minutes. While being common place, Koali had to think what would cause a brother to try and pull the trigger without disengaging the safety leaver, he had heard some terrible tales from marines in the infirmary while grafting bionics on to recently removed appendages. Tales of unworldly creatures who’s claws could rend armor and who were impervious to bolter rounds. Koali stopped in front of his bench again, he had seen countless wars, but he had known the enemies, he understood what they were and how to kill them. If the tales were true would he be able to triumph over them?

Looking at the remaining weapons Koali had a choice now, dislodge the missile, repair the lascannon wiring, figure out the swords power issue or spend more time on the last bolter. He chose the Missile launcher as the next thing to work on, powering up the missile launcher the targeting lens flashed with two red blinks this indicated a jam or unsuccessful launch. “First things first, let’s deactivate this warhead” said out loud and he extended his servo arm down the barrel, using the micro lens attached to the end of the servo claw he located the stuck rocket, the red warhead with dual white strips around the head denoting the munition as a Krak missile. With a thought he had his servo arms claw attach its self to the end of the rocket and the Servo arm’s pin claw unwound the safety locking ring holding the warhead to the rocket, with this removed he retracted his servo arm with newly detached warhead. Setting the explosive aside Koali tipped the missile launcher on its front end and removed the four locking bolts which held the rear loading coil to the missile tube.

With this removed he had an unrestrained view of the rear of the missile. Now he had to remove the secondary fuel cell from the rocket in case it decided to ignite while he was getting the rocket removed. This one was relatively easy there were two indentations on the rear of the rocket, with both of these held down he was able to unscrew the exhaust end of the rocket. All that was left in the tube now was the outer shell of the projectile and one large sliver of metal which looked to be quite jammed between the missile and tube. “Ah ha, now I’ve got you” Koali said out loud.

Thanks Git's!

More fluff

Spoiler:

Part 4

“You’ve got who?” a voice asked.

“Just the cause of this weapon malfunction Onox” Koali said looking up, he had recognized Onox voice instantly and wanted to pay the older marine the respect of looking at him when he addressed him. Koali looked back done and continued to try and pry the small strip of metal blocking the missile.

Onox picked up the recently fixed bolter from the returns cart, he studied the note added to the bolter and looked up at Koali “Poor weapon maintenance?” he asked quizzically.

“Yes, whoever was responsible for that bolter had not cleaned the gas chambers in at least a day, I’d say that’s a dereliction of duty?”

“Fair enough, I’ll see to it that your observations are passed on” Onox replied back.

Onox moved over to Koali’s work bench and picked up the second bolter, he quickly studied the damage note, “the Magazine falls out? What on Mars?” That would never happen Onox said to Koali. “What have you checked out so far?”

“I know, I’ve looked at the release mechanism and there is no mechanical reason for the failure. I did see some paint on the release slide, however the clearance is standard so that one has me wondering” Koali looked up from the missile launcher again. Onox was looking at the damage tag again he raised his eye brows “This one was submitted by brother Kitalia, I recall he’s part of Sgt Jortlok’s squad isn’t he?”

“I think so, they change squads so much I’ve not had a chance to review the latest Orbat listing” Koali answered no listening intently to his old freind

Onox laughed “I think I know the cause of this weapon malfunction”

“Care to enlighten me Onox?” Koali’s reply was terse and he quickly wondered if he had missed something basic?

“I caught up with Jortlok’s squad while they were conducting battle drill before their deployment, Brother Kitalia has… adjusted his armor” Onox was chuckling now as walked over to the returns cart.

“Adjusted, what do you mean? How would this cause the magazine to continually drop from his bolter?” Koali was quickly losing his patience with this game. He knew Onox enjoyed dragging things out but this was getting ridiculous.

Onox put the bolter onto the returns cart next to the other bolter “Brother Kitalia has attached his old chapters shoulder shield to his belt buckle, similar to Brother Fuldo from Lirael’s command squad, the main difference is Fuldo is using my combi melta-plas, you remember that special weapon I was working on two weeks ago?”

Koali looked surprised “I do, so his new belt buckle is touching the release slider?”

“I bet its fine when he’s not aiming, but I suspect when he bring up the bolter his buckle is hitting the slider in the right spot” Onox replied

“Then why was this not diagnosed before coming to me, it’s a giant waste of my time to look into faults like that!” Koali’s temper was rising.

“Calm down Koali, there's a lot to do and I understand you have enough pressure to repair what you can. Let me speak to Sgt Jortlok about Kitalia you focus on repairing” Onox advised

Reciting the prayer of peace Koali felt his temper receding “Thank you Onox, that one was going to have me perplexed for a while” Koali didn’t like to admit when he was wrong but he was very grateful to have Onox take care of that one. It wasn’t the first time the Senior Techmarine had shown great insight, and certainly wouldn’t be the last time to advise on his musings to his younger counterpart.

Changing the tone Onox looked over at Koali “I actually came here to offer you my Tech Rhino for your morning mission. I was kind of hoping to take it for a drive, however Stern has given me an opportunity to work on a Dreadknight and there’s no one else I’d trust to use it”

A smile appeared on the older Techmarines face at the thought of getting his mechandrites on the venerable wargear. “You know that Rhino is large enough to fit Terminator armour. I bet Chaplain Sylekta would be most please if he was able to deploy with his more regal armor. You could be able to get another two bodies in there as well, will you do me the honor and use it?” Onox leaned on one of the spare workbenches while looking at Koali.

“Onox, I’m speechless. I know that your Rhino is quite special to you and you’ve done a lot of the work on it yourself, The honor would be all mine if I could use it” Koali was taken aback by the his offer.

“Don’t get me wrong Koali, if you break it, I’ll make you my personal servitor” Koali couldn’t tell if Onox was being serious or joking around, he decided to go with the former. “I’ll take care of it Onox, you have my word”

“Then it’s done, I’ll update the mission register to include my Rhino” Onox made the Mars sign of brotherhood and walked out of the room.

Well that was unexpected Koali thought as he back to extracting the missile housing from the launcher. He remembered when he first joined the Brotherhood on Titan, all the assistance he had received as well as the tools and wargear he had been handed from Onox. This additional gift, even if only temporary, made him feel slightly more valued to the old marine.

Cheers Gits! are you much of a fluff fan? if so I would be interested to get your input on what I've written so far.

Update: In the process of finishing up the last of the NDK!

However

I would like your opinions on the top of it

Your choices are:

Just the two Ravenwing uprights
Just the Lights
Bare

Top version 1 right view

Top version 2 left view

With nothing on top

Please post or PM your suggestions.

I like it with the stuff on top, though it is very busy as a result. I would lean towards either the lights or the banners, not both.

Banners was my favorite. The lights were more of an after thought.

Only need to paint the sword and do something with the cod piece white now.

So close I can smell it!

The ravenwing thingo's are definitely a yes, they really balance out the top half of the model and also make it seem taller: thus meaner =).
But I'm not sold on the lights...

Hey Knightly, I'll have a read this afternoon.

Looking good... I kinda like busy, dreadnoughts and their ilk are kind of "contraptions" anyway... seems appropriate.

I like the ravenwing banners they look like there were made to go there, the searchlights look wrong though

The thing about the searchlights is the look like eyes which really does emphasie the whole baby carrier thing, probably really cool if you wanted to a pilotless automaton version but doesnt look right with a pilot if you get my meaning

@Graven - Haha, I kind of set my self up there didn't I... If clarification at this point is needed, the model is so close to complete I can smell the fresh paint? Not on the cod piece.

@Tyraide - Thanks, looks like the Raven wing bits are becoming favorites as well.

@Gits - No worries, only if you get the time. Compared to my Venerable Dread on page one this guy seems a wee bit more busy, but I guess that's intended (I can only assume not every one things the way I do about it)

@Asylum_Inmate - Thanks for comments, I agree with you so I might use the lights on something else later on.

Update: Sword done and some WIP on the last marine for this push!

Sword - The big issue with this one was there was no flat level before the blade went to the cutting edge so I wasn't able to do my normal lay out on the blade, on top of that there is the huge hole in the base of the blade which meant I had to improvise on the power half helix.

Marine - The last one, I just have to remind my self not to rush this one.

I'm still looking for your votes on what you want to see on the top of the NDK!

Thanks Gits, I'm pretty sure there will be a whole bunch of photos tomorrow. It will be the last model in the push so there will be army shots as well as pics of the NDK!

@Gits - You're far to kind, I have one more NDK to build/convert/paint so fingers crossed it will be as epic as this one!

@Stoned - Thanks! Although I do find white a real P.I.T.A. to do

@Graven - Cheers mate

@Blackhand - Thanks for the comment, hows the little one treating you?

@Lipsdapips - Haha awesome your an Aucklander as well. This Sunday I hope to bring it in to the store. just not sure how I will go getting there, I may need a lot of sleep.

@Rev. Reiko - Cheers bud!

So, lots of comments, awesome looks like I did this one right

I guess second push picture time eh?

Full pic

For some reason the left pic didn't get copied, oh well Center pic instead

Right pic

So this push took me 80 Days in total to complete all the models, I did a rough break down and it took:

17 days for the NDK + 3 marines
5 days for the Paladin
6 days on the attack bike
5 days on close combat marine
6 days on techmarine
6 days on the Irconclad repaint
4 days on first interceptor
8 days on 3 interceptors
1 day for the obj marker
4 days for the next 3 odd assortment of marines

Not every day I was painting/modeling/converting and usually I would get about 2 hours a night all in all a very long time but I've already started on the next one.

To Repaint:
10 x Tac marines
1 x Rhino
1 x Pred/razorback
2 x PAGKs

To model/convert/paint
1 x Librarian in Terminator armour conversion (building)
1 x Sgt. Normal Bike
1 x Command squad holy marine
1 x Engiseer
4 x Paladin Terminator GK's
5 x Power Armoured GK's (Purifiers)
1 x Adeptus Mechanicus Terminator (concept stages)
1 x TAGK - being Gravens grandmaster

I might also look at slapping in another 10 man tactical squad or another vehicle of some kind. not sure yet.

I should actually get started on better assembling/ undercoating etc

Update: I had a game last night with my SM version of my army (sorry, in fact it was my Ultramarines force) played 1000 points against the same DE force which tabled my GK force in the last battle. I'll try recollect how the battle went but I lost by 1 inch (or lost by not rolling a 5 for my run movement) It was a truley EPIC battle and I fully enjoyed myself this time.

When I got home I did the primer on Gravens GM

Then started working on my Techmarine in Term armor. Shoulder pad is going to get some GS to fix up the edges on the mech icon. Also need GS on the belt shield and legs. The three lengths of guitar string with ends will go just under the belt sheild somehow.

WOW!

Is that a conv. beamer in his right arm?

Made me think that would be a sweet setup for a servo-arm.

I do feel the plas pistol could do with a bit of integrating more, a bit of GS on the cutoff bottom would help imo.

I agree with Dave. You truly love your work, and it shows. I wish more wargammers would put that much effort and thought into what they did.

Would be a much more exciting hobby than it already is!

@Vit - Indeed it is mate, I banged this one up around page 1 or 2 of this blog then shelved it waiting for the best time to use it. and now it has arrived! The plas pistol arm is getting some GS loving, only to fill in the gaps between the pistol and the tube, I'm not that good as GS.

@Tipios - Thanks for taking the time to comment, I'm glad you like it.

@Graven - Course, this small section must be close to heaven for you?

@Gits - Thanks!

@Rev. Reiko - Cheers

@Dave82517 - Thank you very much for taking the time to comment, hopefully your impressed enough to keep coming back to check up

@Markillius - Thanks mate, I'm only a small part of this community and there are some truly fanatical bloggers out there who I take a lot of my cues from and give it as much effort as I can

Update:

Gravens GK WIP2

Gravens GK shoulder sheild done

Remember how I said I'm no good at GS, this should prove the point. I should hopefully be able to save some by using a sharp knife to give the plates some edges. either that or the paint job should hide it heh.

Now on a rather sad note, my work has finally blocked Dakka so I can't check the site every hour like I used to without some serious work arounds, so updates will slow down, possibly every second day with pics.

I'm gutted.

@Markillius - Cheers mate! the axe has actually claimed some blood already (managed to slice a decent chunk out of my index finger when I slipped while cutting the semi circle)

@Graven - The apoth head on a DK would look pretty awesome, I might have to follow suit cheers for the idea hehe.

@LDP - Oh yeah, Tenacious D and Foo's going to go off! Fully hanging out to get tickets now aye!

@Rev. Reiko - Jealousy will get you know where, he offered to send me an old school libby and I felt honored enough to send something back to him

@Gits - erm, I could have sworn there was supposed to be 3 testic.... erm, tentacles one seems to have fallen off. Now I have to search for it... I can't believe I'm now having to search for a testicle... I mean a tentacle... wait none of this sounds right.

Update: Why on earth did I have to have such a long name for a character!?

Legs done

Right shoulder

Sword incl. both sides

Which means.....

Hes done.

Front

Side

Back

the Sword and Psycannon arm are not affixed at this time as I have NFI how I'm going to get this guy to England from New Zealand without having some damage...

Ideas anyone? lots of bubble wrap? wrap it in glue and let Graven break it out with a hammer and file?

I've been successful by taking packing peanuts, and actually fitting them around pieces to the point that they're almost in a packing peanut shell, then using either tissue paper to wrap it all together followed by bubblewrap for transport, or just follow it up with some bubble wrap.

Thing that's tough is is has to keep models in place, which means makin it really packedin, but you have to accommodate for added external pressure from shipping, so you have to give it some give.

Hope that helps.

Also, DAMMIT STOP BEING SO AWESOME!!! How can i possibly keep up? =P

Get a large pill bottle from your local pharmacy, stick em in there with some packaging peanuts. I'm sure Graven can handle putting the arms on if needed.

Nice freehand work & love the sword. Just a really nice figure all-round and the unorthodox design really makes him stand out.

Bubble wrap, but put folds of it beneath his arms to support them so when it bounces around they don't bear the weight of the figure by themselves.

@Graven - Sweet I look forward to seeing some totally completed pics in about 2 weeks (or however long it takes to wing its self over to you)

@Markillius - Thanks man, some good advice, I went for a bubble wrap insert into the areas I thought might be weaker, then put it in a baggie and wrapped that baggie in more bubble wrap.

@WM - Ooh a pill bottle, I wish I had seen this before I sent her off (I would have as well if work hadn't blocked the site..)

@Gits - Cheers Gits! maybe when I get to make tactical squad four I might do a GMS mission for anyone who's keen.

@LDP - Thanks mate!

@TyRaide - One dash of awesome, I just need a way to send it to you. Any ideas?

@DSS - Welcome to [DCM] hood I do have a question though, is it tempting you with the dark side when GK's are supposed to be holy good warriors? if you do feel the need to collect I'd be happy to subscribe to it

Update: back in to build mode again tonight, lots of little bits of gluing but and I have the following to show thus far. Tac squad three has the theme of all bare heads and shoulder shields on the deathwatch shoulder pad. Not totally sold on it but no turning back now!

squad 3 marine 1 front

squad 3 marine 1 rear

squad 3 marine 2 front

squad 3 marine 2 rear

squad 3 marine 3 front

squad 3 marine 3 rear

I would hope so! It's the best way to keep things sorted and arranged.

BAGGIES FOR EVERYONE!!!

Loving the progress man. I did a little recap on my blog of the Legion so far, and I know your pain. I still have so much to build, but it seems like it's already been a lot.

And I'll be honest, your's are the only marines that I've seen converted to GK's that I ACTUALLY LIKE. So Gotta give you even more props.

Hope to see you round the blogs some more!

@DSS - paying off your debts eh? after seeing your thread that could take some time oh and yes, every model has a baggie, oh you only asked about paladins. I guess another secret is out of the baggie*

@Markillius - amen to that man, I saw the recap and posted on your GK thread, looking tight good sir! I'd like to be more active however not being able to connect at work leaves me with little time at home, I do have a list of threads I check religiously (Gits mammoth 189 page thread and your GK/Iron mongers thread to name a few)

So every one gets a baggie? yes.... yes they do

From left to right, 2 rows of Paladins, a GK justicar and Command squad holy marine, below them is a pewter tech preist and pewter term libby. Next is a row of 5 Purifiers then 5 tac marines then 5 purgitation marines, then another 5 tac marines. A rhino and a bike are on the far right

*I never claimed I was in any way humorous, worth a shot though.

I haven't done any painting tonight, went to the not so FLGS for a game against the DE player who tabled me when I played my GK force, finally came away with a win! so stoked and happy now.

Hopefully tomorrow I might try post a BR of it if I can remember what happened (might also post what happened in the last BR as well. so 2 for the price of 1)

@Markillius - Thanks mate, I was pretty stoked to pull out the win, I look forward to how your battle went.

@Ice - I'm just posting the 2nd BR from the 5th July, hopefully I can post the 3rd BR soon enough.

Please remember this was all from memory, so dead numbers and movements may not be 100%
Spoiler:

Map

Deployment

My first turn

Pred’s move forward one 6 inches the other 12, rhinos move 12 inches right. Dread moves to right hand side of ruins, libby moves high onto gangway, tech missile launcher hits biker, kills. 6 inch pred hits biker number 2 kills him. Scouts open up with missile launcher, blow up raider, archon and wyches disembark, scout bolters open up on wyches kill 2 or 3 tac squad lascannon shoots at venom = weapon destroyed.

Opponents first turn

Raider moves over to first obj and fires at 6 inch pred does nothing, venom moves around ruins in front of scouts open up kill 2, bikers move past scouts in front of dread shoot at dread do nothing wyches on foot move toward scouts no shooting, he wants to get into close combat.

My second turn

Autocannon dread shoots at foot wyches, kills 3? Scouts shoot at venom and do nothing.
Pred’s shoot at raider, blows it up, rhinos move next to dread and shoot at bikes, they do nothing
Other pred shoots at wyches from recently exploded raider and kills 2 or 3 missile launcher from tac squad shoots at wyches and kills 1

Opponents second turn

Archon + wyches move and assault the scouts, kills them for a pain token and consolidate in to trees. Bikes move to block cover from rhinos and blow up the dread. Wyches from the last raider move, assault the 6 inch pred and blow up a weapon, venom flies just behind the bikes and blows up the 12 inch pred, disembarks trueborn who move to where the dread was.

My third turn

Libby moves to open window, passes psychic attack and flames the bikes and venom, kills bikes and shakes the venom (no move or shoot) flamer squad disembark and move forward 6 inches to archons lot, flame on and kills 1 or 2. Tac squad missile launcher shoots at CC’d wyches on pred and kill 2 (should leave 2-3 left) rhinos open up on archon do nothing.

Opponents third turn

Trueborn pop a rhino and move closer to the half tac squad which flamed the archons mob, wyches in cc with pred break combat and assault the missile launcher half squad and lose one. But stay strong. Archon assaults flamer tac squad and wipes them out… consolidates closer to wrecked rhino.

My fourth turn

Disembark melta tac squad and shoot at archons does nothing or kills 1. Free rhino moves up towards trees objective, lascannon shoots at venom does nothing, pred moves back 6 inches, it can’t shoot at anything. Missile launcher squad CC’s wyches taking out all but 1

Opponents fourth turn

Archon breaks from wyches and assaults the lascannon group wyches and trueborn assaults melta squad kills 4 however sgt stays strong killing 2 (should leave archon and 2 wyches and some trueborn) lascannon squad get pwned and the archon consolidates closer to objective. Pred assaulting wyches are killed consolidate 2 inches to far obj

My fifth turn

Libby moves down a level, pred opens up and takes out archon? Libby moves around flames true born kills them wych takes a hit but saves, libby assaults wych and gets stomped by higher initiative. Rhino rams the venom the blast is epic both die. Missile launcher squad try to daisy chain to far obj but are 1 inch short due to rolling a 4 on my run.

Opponents fifth turn

Wych runs to objective with ease.

Games ends with only 1 DE on the board and SM’s with a turretless pred and 5 marines.

Dude! That squad looks amazing!

Really like the Holy Marine head, always have major respect for anyone who can pull off faces properly so kudos to you

Congrats on the win too, DE are nasty, the trick is not to use MSU from what i can tell, makes it harder for them to get their much needed pain tokens. You do lose out on maneuverability though which is an issue...

And to counter an earlier made comment, trust me, you arent going to lose people because you happen to be busy and cant post.

The marine squad is fething beautiful! love the kit bashing, customization.
Really moves them along from the bog standard marine.
in my eyes all marines would be like that, only very few chapters wouldn't steep there armor in lorrals.

Hate to say it, but I'm just not feeling the turret. The dreadnought is just to dreadnought-y for me to pass as a turret, more in the lines of an ork thing than a SM thing imo.

...I'm inclined to agree. I think it works but the dread sharcofagos? should be coverd? it looks like the loading/fireing mechanicisum for the gun, but maybe if you just put a bit more amour on, plasti-card squares hear and there, but not enough to cover it up!

and maybe trim the tops of the shields, add some card at the bottom, and bulk up the back. then it would look a bit like the amour around the middle has been taken of, or something maybe.

@Jirc - Cheers man, I posted on your blog my tips/ticks for tank assembly/painting. btw no airbrush here

@Rabid Ferret - Thanks for taking the time to comment! I'll continue to convert as much as I can.

@Graven - Thank you, I was pretty happy with his face so the rest of him was mediocre compared to it

@Stoned - Cheers, I agree that marines would end up with a bit of personalizing of their hardware.... except ultramarines, they are to stuck up...

@Greyguy13 - Cheers Grey, My advice would speak to painters who you like. There are many different techniques/styles which will supply different results. I've gone for a clean smooth look with no weathering, where as painters such as Grey_Death will mix it up on every level. For me using the foundation paints followed by a wash followed by 2 thin coats of the main colour and a watered down highlight seem to work the best.

@WM - I know what you mean. The turret was put together in 2005 and my bits box (more like a small ziplock bag) was quite low on available bits. I keep it like it is for a reminder on where I've come from with my converting.

Update: the tank is finally done for its main armor panels, I need to do highlights and attach the additional bits to the sides etc. No picture at the moment as one of the lights stopped working. got a replacement bulb in my hands now.

Will post pic's when I get a chance.

Very nice knightly. I think they really need weathering though. And I don't say that lightly because I usually don't weather my vehicles. But with that fairly plain, light shade of color I think the weathering would give it some extra character.

I like the turret conversion for the pred!! and nice new paint job!!

I agree with gits though on weathering, unless you are saying it's just arrived of the production line, and is nice and shiny

Hey Git's/Tipios I agree with you both, the downside is that the pred/razor is on its 3rd repaint (first was my grey knights silver color = horrible, second was the grey pic shown at the top = horrible not at that bad and the last... well there you have it) inducing another coat of paint to it is not something I look forward to. I've also tried to explain through fluff why the army looks like its just been painted... it has, Brother captain stern has decreed it when he formed the force to distinguish the loyalist from the traitors who had turned (and not gone chaos black)

Next up is the repaint of the tac squad (black swords) and their rhino, then I can get onto newer stuff

Edit: I will be trying weathering on my next force, as well as trying OSL on weapons. Any ideas on a force which isn't power armor based? I was thinking Eldar

Guard are always good for mucked up vehicles and having right around 0 power armour (besides Stracken, if you take that approach with him). Or, if you instead want expensive but dainty power armour, there's always Sisters. I haven't seen any of them around lately, though I might not be looking in the right places.

The ball's in your court; dribble, shoot, or pass. I'm sure you'll make your decision with class. Kaesar II

If you're feeling brave you could always physically chip some paint off, exposing layers below. Maybe try it on a test patch underneath?

Also, I have a feeling you doing eldar would be fiendishly pretty. But, with your talent for faces, I'd love to see you do IG.

Personally, an army I've always wanted to see scuffed up and dirty is nids.

Dinged up plating, dirt and muck covered hooves, blood spattered, and glossy, moist looking organic parts. It's one of those armies that you can really apply all the really cool detailing and painting methods to and have them look sick.

But if you're looking for a non nid army, I vote for Tau. Play different from Marines, look distinctly different, and look sexy when torn up.

@Valkyrie - Thanks Valk, hopefully your keen to keep an eye on this blog for the future

@Gits - This is true, I can't exalt threads either perhaps lego/yak has disabled it for the moment.

@LKII - IG, another good choice, Lots of tanks scares me to buggery though, I've put off doing my last Land Raider/Storm Raven/Predator and 2 Rhino's because I'm not a huge fan of doing tanks heh. It's also weird you mention SoB I actually looked around and from what I can gather all their models are pewter and they are quite rare. I'll consider the IG and perhaps see what an all inf force would look like really digging the rhyming by the way.

@Graven - Hahah, not that brave yet, I'd end up cutting a leg or an arm off, I'm thinking I could try Grey_Death's sponge technique to induce chipping. I think the Eldar might be the go, I can do faces with them as well as just nice smooth lines!

@Markilllius - Hmm hadn't considered Nid's I guess the whole painting a swarm is the thing holding me off. It would be awesome to paint them up all beaten up and bloody. Tau would need a codex revamp before I think i'd consider playing them (I have some already painted so would have to strip them. What painting scheme would you go with?

Update: I won the FLGS painting comp with the Paladin term so thank you thank you thank you to all those who voted!

Been working slowly on the PA Libby:

Almost done one model repaint as well, just forgot to take pic's of it.

Very pretty! You do love those helmet wings doncha?! I probably have a spare set if you need more, btw. Like the combination of the DA vet backpack with the paladin icon, that's one I shall thieve. Scroll down the middle's very clever too, that off the DA stuff, trimmed accordingly?

Gratz on the winning paint job!

As far as paint schemes.... If you're talking nids, I don't really like going for the traditional schemes. My thought is that nids are crazy-f'n-retardedly-stupid fast adapting on the genetic level. So, having those schemes where every unit is painted to look the same way just doesn't fly with me.

I got my start (the latest and most successful one, as I'm still going strong) with a 3k+ nids force. What I chose was a snow theme, because I liked the idea of having them mostly blue and white. Giving them that cool, sleek tones to contrast with the vivid, slimy organic portions of their bodies and the bloodiness they would have on them from gore and what have you.

What I've seen that works well, if not best, is basecoating them white, no matter WHAT scheme you' decide to go with. Then washing the bodies while the carapace plates wait for later. The best is, as usual, devlan mud. Gives you a really good bone color when it's done. Or, you can paint it bleached bone then wash with devlan mud for even better boni-color.

But honestly, far as nid painting goes IMO, you need to decide where they're fighting first. Nids are one of the best armies to add slicked up bases to.

For example, next time I decide to try nids again, I'm going to go with a grasslands theme. Tall grass on all the bases, letting the bigger units have it matted down beneath them, while the fast hormagaunts and termagaunst would just be flitting through it like raptors in jurassic park.

Find your location, then decide your painting based on that. OR, think of what they'd be fighting there, and paint how you believe they would have to adapt to survive.

Looking very good man, I am in awe of how you paint your marines, all in bits like that, that is an amazing amount of work! It seems to be paying off though, they look really awesome! I have to say I am a HUGE fan of weathering vehicles, I assume you have seem the way Nerdfest does his weathering? I bought some of the Maskol he uses for doing my three Rhinos, I love the look of it.

@Graven - Funny you mention it, I tried to stay away from the wing motif for so long, it was only till a mate gave me the scheme to paint it up did I then start to incorporate more and more into the army. I figured you would like the combination of the paladin poles on a model, I'm surprised I haven't seen more to be honest. The scroll down the middle is actually from a BA death company set, I had to trim some of the offending BA icon's off of it though (you can see I slapped an Inquisitor symbol on his right thigh)

@Markillius - Cheers man, your vote helped RE: nid painting I'd almost want to have one common denominator, like chitin color, or talon color or even just a belly color, something that would tie the force in together. I do like the idea of the grass, and I could totally imagine the small nids finding their own way through and the large ones just barreling through.

@Jirc - Thanks mate, I like how you paint your SW's as well, so smooth! In pictures I bet all those bits would seem like there is so much to do, however I can pic up one bit and focus on one small part, once done I can leave it to the side and not have to worry about it. I can't say I've seen Nerdfests weathering technique, I'll have to look through his blog again, that is unless you have a link

@Graven - Cheers, I'll take a closer pic when I get home tonight for you, I also should have your bits in the post today as well.

@LDP - Thanks, I can't wait either, only his head and back back left!

@Gits - Heh, I missed a TON of mold lines on this squad, but that was before I started cleaning them off the unpainted models, I can say "At least I drilled the barrels!" I figured I might get one or two comments on the libby's axe, so I took pictures stage by stage of it which I'll post soon

@Tipios - Thank you, It's really easy perhaps I should do a guide on faces as well?

Sword guide:

I start with a foundation paint blue base (Mordian I think) and give it a black wash, the next up is smooth coat of Regal Blue leaving the darker area near the hilt with the wash showing. the first layer is Regal Blue with a very small amount of white added to the mix. This is painted almost to the centre of the blade, leaving only the ridge showing

Next up, add more white to the mix (still a very small amount) and add water to make it translucent and put this over the blade leaving the ridge and a small line of the last color showing (apologies for the blurryness)

Each of these steps are basically the same, just with more white added in

Once the mix gets to about an Ice Blue color you should be about half way down the blade towards the cutting edge

The next stage is adding twice as much white as previously added to ramp up the brightness, this stage has to have a lot of water as the goal is to have the paint slightly pool in places along the helix as this will supply the pulse nodes to suggest power being surged through the blade, continue to paint this color towards the cutting edge

In this one more white is added, but not applied to the whole helix, only towards the pulse nodes and a small line is added (if possible try to get a see through trail on the back edge

The last step is just pure white, small dots are added to the nodes on the forward edge and the cutting edge is given a white coat as well

I'm just putting together a guide on the Axe scheme, hopefully it wont take to long to do

@Tipios - Thanks, Not sure if I want to do a face tut, doing a close up of the repainted sgts head made me cringe somewhat, however I'll see what I can do for the Libbys head and might post that for you

@Gits - Cheers Gits, I might get to see it on one of your models eh

@Miss Dee - Thanks

@Graven - Happy to help, btw heres the close up of the head.... you asked for it.... shudder

A bit done tonight on the last 3 marines of squad 4, all the armour has a coat of grey and shouldnt need another, so it will be highlighting of the armor then cloth, yay!

Oh and axe tutorial below

Started with a Liche Purple base coat and washed it black then waited for it to dry, once dry it got another coat of Liche Purple. A very small amount of white was added to the Liche purple and quite large lines were painted out to somewhat simulate lightning

More white was added to the mix (still small increments) and a thinner line was painted leaving the darker fatter line still showing

Even more white was added and thinner lines were painted in (the ultimate aim is to have very thin lines if white basically)

When the lines become to small to paint down I started to focus the lighter paint at junctions where lines meet

The aim now is to bring the paint at the junctions to a single point on the junction as white

and the final result hopefully should look better than this

Very nice indeed, and thanks for the flayed face pic too! My only comment - and this is bearing in mind you are far, far better at painting than I - is that I would consider having the lightning working out from the "ball" on the weapon, like a plasma sphere. But, fab nonetheless.

Post by: Knightley

Oh wow, quite a few comments it seems

@Rev. Reiko - I didn't know Cattafish did it like that, I had seen a guide on how to do molten blades following the same effect (instead of strait lines think more flowing and in orange/red) I'll have to look his up and see if I can improve.

@Miss Dee - Thanks, I might give another one a similar try as I have one spare to see if I can make it better (painting over a painted face leads to lost details)

@Gits - I'm pretty sure I could have done it better if I had done more of them before hand (this was my first try so I made a ton of mistakes) and I think you're far to hard on your self, I've seen your painting and I consider it much higher than mine.

@Graven - Cheers mate, I agree with you on the lighting from the node, it was one of the mistakes I made when painting it, if I do it again I'll be fixing the mistakes I made on this one

@Steve.C - Firstly thank you for posting, hopefully I can fill you in on how I get to it.
For my first step its a GW white undercoat spray, this is followed up by the Foundation paint - Adeptus Battlegrey with some water to improve the flow and make it less clunky (for some reason my foundation paints have bits in them..)
once this is dry I give the model a black wash to give shading in the joints/recesses.
After that is dry I start with Fortress Grey with water, I think its about 2:1 but could be slightly more) and the aim is to get good coverage and wait for the water to evaporate leaving the paint flat with out streaks (I was recently taught to add water to paints, but had figured out that once the water evaporated the paint that was left looked much smoother)
There will be cases where the paint wont cover all the foundation paint as it was quite see through, in those cases I will give it another blast of watered down Fortress Grey.
Once that is done I do Spacewolf Grey lining of all the plates and on characters higher models might get a even lighter raised edge highlight.

Hope that helps and thank you all for commenting.

Update: Marine 8 done, I thought I'd try a leather look for his robes, something akin to a leather coat, not sure if I pulled it off but it was worth a shot

Squad 4 Marine 8 front

Squad 4 Marine 8 Rear

Squad 4 Marine 8 Side

Squad 4 last 2 guys WIP 2 - Just need to do the robes and these are basically done

Love marine 8, that leather coat is brilliant!

Ont thing, the barrel of the plasma gun looks... odd being the same colour as the rest....

Hey Knightley, there was a chap looking for a method for purple power weapons. I re-posted your tutorial, hope that's ok.

@Rev. Reiko - Cheers, and noted about the barrel I will change that tonight when I get home, it looks totally odd having the whole thing the same color.

@Lenny - Oh wow, thanks! I wouldn't think it could get used so quickly (I assumed some one might try it in 5-6 months) Totally stoked to have it posted somewhere

@Tipios - cheers, I may try it again on another one in the future. Is there anything you would change about it? (is the highlight so light or not light enough?)

@Lenny - I guess its better to underestimate than just brag about how good I think I am, there is still so much I can improve on.

@Tipios - Cheers, Looking at it in natural light I'm slightly agreeing with you, I might give it a wash of devlan mud to see what that might do to it

@Gits - Thanks! I think that if you do a PA Libby you could pull off the robed look (or even a honor guard with robes) that way you could fit it in with your Mantis Warriors.

@Graven - Cheers mate, I'm not sure I get the sweeping dusters comment though (Is this an English saying?)

@CLS - Thank you, Sadly I've seen other painters out there (and on Dakka) and it might be more than a year before I could submit anything to a GD standard

Update: Marines are done! Back pack and face on the Libby are done! so much achieved today!

Excellent work as ever. Love the Libby, the pack detail even more so now. All I meant by sweeping dusters was the sense of them wearing full-length dusters like cowboys sweeping past and catching in the wind. Adds great energy and style to the figs.

@Gits - Cheers

Update: PA Libby done. Here's the bad new, I don't like him.... He's far to busy, the angle I went with on the legs makes him look off balance. If I were to do it again, less crap on him. Still happy with the color and technique I used.

Looking great mr! I kind of agree with you about the libby; maybe swap the head for a helmed one, that way there's a central uniform colour? Also, lmk if you find yourself needing more bits.

Post by: tipios

Great group shots!!! did you do a mock up of the lbby before you glued him? He is very nicely painted, but because you mentioned it he does look like he has tripped over:(

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2011/08/14 21:08:27

Post by: Knightley

@Graven - I would swap the head, however the sod is plastic glued in now and wont move unless I go at it with a blowtorch and jack hammer. I'm actually considering giving this guy away for bits so I can try make another one, reckon some one would like him? If I can get some bits, I'd do a bolt pistol with a force staff in a neutral pose with a helmet (with a scroll between his legs like this one - May need a Justicar leg set though)

@Tipios - Cheers mate, I did do a mock up, however plasticine gave him an awesome pose which I couldn't re-create once all the bits started to glue together that was my curse of trying to add more bits to him.

Update: Quick and dirty face tutorial, however looking through the pictures there is a lot of glare which hides the actual work. Feel free to comment on stages you change or how you would paint a face, I'm always open for suggestions/ideas

First Stage, base face with Tallarn Flesh and give the face a good bath of Ogryn Flesh wash

Second Stage: this is just a strait dwarf flesh layer (plenty of water) focusing on leaving recess with the Ogryn wash showing, areas such as around the eyes, around the veteran marks above the eye brow, bits beside the mouth and little bits on the nose.

Third Stage: this is a 50/50 mix of Dwarf Flesh and Elf Flesh, this stage is aimed at raising the lightness of areas where the sun would hit, so cheek bones, top of the head, bridge of the nose, eye brow region , lips, chin, the aim here is to have the first layer not totally covered up by the new mix.

Fourth Stage: This stage is just pure elf flesh, The aim here is to paint raised edges where the sun would hit it the most. This includes areas such as top of the head, bridge of the nose, eye brows and cheeks.

Fifth Stage: Eyes, teeth and scar were done at this point, using a 000 brush I did the teeth first then the eyes. Using a 00 brush added purple wash to the scar above the eye and a 000 brush for the pupil of the eye.

The next face I do i'll try take better pic's.

@Tipios - feel free to post your results if you end up following it (on here is fine heh)

@Miss Dee - Fair call, before I learned how to paint faces I was doing all helmeted (which helped when all the old OOP metal GK's had helmets)

Nice job on the faces Knightley. One thing that you've left out though are the service studs on a few of the heads. They're the ones on the side temples that look like the marines have a bad case of acne. According to the fluff it's suppose to be given for years of service. I almost filed off the ones from my first few heads when I first started painting thinking that they were just flashing .

edit: Here's a link: http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Space_Marine_Honour_Badges#Service_Studs
I paint mine with just boltgun metal.

Actually it's not from the DA vet sprue as the pic from GW's DA Veteran pack is here: http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m2070130_99120101060_DAChapterUpgrade_873x627.jpg

Can't remember where the half bionic head comes from...I know I have at least two in my collection.

*Edit: sorry you're right it was included in there though it's apart of the normal special weapons sprue that comes with the standard tactical squad. http://bitspudlo.com/t/category/66-tactical-squad?page=2

Awesome, another page down (only 191 left to go till I can catch Gits...)

@Egg - I'm honored you've commented! your Blood angel blog is truly inspiring and your painting is top notch! Re the service studs I wasn't sure if I had wanted to paint them metallic, I've highlighted them as if there was something under the skin as I figured that the rate at which an astartes regenerate would have skin trying to over grow the studs. This does give me more opportunity to add differences to faces now, I could do some boltgun, mithril, gold, bronze or tin to designate certain stages, thanks heaps for the Link

@LDP - I'm sure I'd be amazed with anyone I would meet

@LKII - Seems I was a little late in responding but yes, the half heads I have are from tactical boxes of marines, I could have sworn there is two different types of boxes as the old Sgt heads were quite plain in comparison.

@Daxx - Thanks mate, no worries about the time in between posting I'll keep trucking on and the next time you check there should be more to look at

@Stoned - I first thought that as well when I found the head (back when I would take all the bits out of sprues first) and ordered another DA pack only to find it wasn't in there.

@Miss Dee - Agreed.

Update, the last repaint for the second strike squad marine is done

Holy crap knightly, you've been busy. You know you might be able to address the off-balance issues of the Libby simply by rebasing him. Giving him some rocks orde ris to move across might make a world of difference.

@LDP - Ah, misunderstood the intention there.

@Gits - Thats an unfortunate problem with so many models left to paint, I'm always in progress mode! I'll seriously consider changing the base of the libby and see if that helps me with his posing (wont help with the over abundance of swag he has on him though)

Update: was supposed to post a couple of days ago, so you get both barrels now:

Hey Knightly, the Rhino is looking awesome so far. As far as the libby goes, have you considered not just re-basing him but moving him to a 40mm base. That should alter the perspective of the whole model and reduce the effects of the swag.

Man, it's been some time since I made a proper visit on dakka! It's nice to see that you have kept up your good work! The Dreadknight turned out great as well as the librarian! I also like the red bionics on marine 7 from sqd 4, my first thought was on Ratz from Neuromancer whose prosthetic arm got a casing of pink plastic, which seems more rational than bare steel. Don't know if that is anything near what your painting is meant to represent, but cool never the less!

@Gits - Thank you! I am really looking forward to seeing this force completed now

@Graven - A keen eye my friend, yes, I tried my hand at some free... um hand and the I was was I could start with

@Lenny - Could be an idea, I'm not 100% on the bases sizes, 28mm is the normal round bases, is 40mm the terminator bases?

@Tipios - Thanks, I started with a micron pen and dotted out the outline (for the corners) then basically joined the dots and filled it in. I'll have to buy a bigger drill bit for the exhausts

@TyRaide - As a WIP of the rhino I'd never leave it in that state, I did it like that just to get a separate line for red/white and I've blocked over the join with black (see below)

@LDP - Well, fingers crossed this next Paladin is my best yet, been trying to go slow and steady on the paint job to make sure it is crisp.

@Count - Welcome back The Sgt for squad 4 was my attempt at fresh/not fresh burnt skin/face like he was hit with a flamer and has continued to fight on. It was easy to do and looks quite good against the grey of the armor

Update: Rhino for Squad 4 is done.

@WM - Yeah that was my first thought as well, I'm trending more to kit bashes then over the top conversions, there will still be the odd one of those coming up though.

Update: to give my hands a break (using the 00 brush lots cramps my hands up a bit) I've started on the next lot. 5 Marines for squad 3, these guys will all have bare heads and shields on the right shoulder guard. hopefully they will look ok.

Looking good man, can't wait to see them all finished. How on earth do you paint them all in bits like that, how do you hold them? I must try it, as it seems to work for you, what with your awesome army and all that as proof!

Cheers Jirc, I can't wait either, problem is there is still a huge amount to go. I guess I found a way to paint in bits and it works for me, not sure if it would work for every one else, so if I could offer any advice it would be find something that works for you

Update: quite a few small pieces have been completed - I've also learned how to use crop

Apoth shoulder pad 1 done

Apoth shoulder pad 2 done

Skull for the base

Tilt plate

Weapons WIP 1

Cheers for reading

@Gits - Thanks, I read your second BR as well, love the narrative

@Crusher - Thank you I Started off with a Liche Purple base coat and just added very small bits of white to it.

@Tipios - Just my eye balls at the moment, I must be blessed with semi decent close focusing eyes

@Miss Dee - I'm thinking the red triple helix (similar to his left arm) but not sure, I could go a Red moon with a black sword through it.

apoth is brilliant - can't think why I didn't think of that loadout (beyond the demented cost, that is!) Outstanding as ever.

Thanks mate, its a point sink right there, however most of the gaming I'm doing is 1000 points and paladins aren't enough for me in those games.

Update: So close to finishing!

Arm done, tried my hand at some small bits on the blue screen, not sure if I pulled it off completely, ah well better luck next time

I added blue power spiky bits on the staff, they look ok in person, not so sure in a picture. (edit - adjusted thanks to Gits sorting the white balance out)

Thanks for watching

@Tipios - Cheers, I'm a little hesitant on doing OSL on my SM army, I've not done it on any other model so it might look out of place, I could give it a try on a test model to see how it goes however

@Miss Dee - I'm hoping he can turn his wrist a bit to see the screen

Update: started to glue him together, should done in a bit also edited the staff pic to include a white balanced shot courtesy of Gits!

The apoth looks pretty sweet as well, the eyes and those other lenses looks flawless!

@Tipios - Thanks, although I think the white shield shoulder pad could have been more refined with the Icon and Sword, the sword kinda looks like gak close up :S

@Gits - Thank you!

@LDP - Chur, I think I'll submit this one for my single model category, it's still not golden demon quality, but its currently the best painted model I have.

@TyRaide - Which part in particular?

@Miss Dee - Course, I listen to my fellow posters and try to incorporate their ideas into my modeling

Update: spent most of this weekend getting two coats on all the grey armor on my next half squad

@Arashi Hyuuga - Thank you very much for your comments! I guess the next question is, who would you kill for some skills? I have some people I might require to "take a holiday"

@Miss Dee - As do I, what started this was my lack of ability to paint silver properly, the next best thing... paint grey

Update: Got some paint on the Biker sgt and did all the grey highlights on the 5 tac marines (however didn't take a picture)

Thanks for reading

I've brought the GK codex as well as the SM codex however, not being such an avid gamer I've not really committed to running the army in a set way, there are bits of the force I could never use in the GK list (bikes, thunderfire cannon etc) yet there's no real normal SM option for kick ass marines and terminators so if I could offer a fence sit and say I'm allowing myself to do both armies.

As written above I can fence sit and run two armies, a normal SM one and a GK one, all with the same color scheme, and hey, if there is ever an apocalypse game I could field the whole army as one glorious force! Hope this explains it a bit

Dude, I've got to say, I've been stalking your thread for a couple of weeks now (and shamelessly stealing your ideas for my grey knights, 'cause you know, silver is the enemy) and you're FREAKING AWESOME! and I hate your soul :p

Love your models, inspirational. Do you still paint with fortress grey - badab black - fortress grey - SW grey? I'm contemplating whether to go metal or grey for my GK's, your models are making me lean towards grey (might go a bit darker though as I'll most likely play against SW armies, or unprimed, i.e grey armies).

@a_h_d - wow, I've not considered myself anything near an inspiration before so I'm not sure what to say have you posted any of your models yet? I'd be keen to see how you do them.

@MrFish - Thank you heaps for you words and I'm honored your first post was on my blog! Regarding the painting, I'm doing the majority of my guys in adeptus/badab/fortress apart from my paladins and purifers they will be adeptus/badab/codex, have a look at the latest paladin if you want to see how it looks a little darker.

@Miss Dee - Hmm, let me do a quick stock take and I'll get back to you on the legs and body

@Ogryn - Thanks!

Update: been a long few days, I've spent the last 2 days at another Lan so very little painting has been done. I've gotten through some bits and finished some others. However I do think my loving partner has used the camera and mentaled some of the settings as I swear the photos look shocking (something I'll have to have a look at later)

I'm going to be bold here - I don't like the 2nd guy that much. I know it's partly the size of the image but the detailing on the lower half doesn't look as crisp as your usual work. I stress that it's still far better than anything I could achieve, and of a great standard - just, I dunno, it's not quite there, for me at least. Sorry to be negative. Top half - face, bolter, and sight especially are lush.

But hey, if you interested http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/392388.page has my test piece so far.

Also, that marine looks f***ing beastly. Bit messy on the lower half, but still epic as F***

I love painters who do so thorough a job like you, it makes the model seem bigger as there is so much detail cramped in there! Great stuff

Post by: Knightley

@Gits - Yeah, needless to say I may not be doing that close cropping again, time to live in the "it looks good from a distance" shots

@Graven - I agree, the sword on his tabbard went up the creek as the micron pen had a hernia and blotted ink all over it, that was my attempt at fixing it. I may have to go back over him once this squad is finished and see if I can save him.

@a_h_d - I've posted on your thread, hopefully you are ok with some comments I've made.

@LDP - Cheers mate, I think that because the model picture is so close, thats why the model looks cramped... then again, he's got a lot going on with him

Update: Squad 3 marine 3 done

@Graven - Cheers for the vote of confidence, I've been dreaming of painting eldar next, but also have a hankering for some nid's.... could be an expensive idea.

@Miss Dee - I think black lining works well with my army, I'd suggested doing a test model for you scheme and seeing if you like it before committing to doing them all again.

@Tipios - Haha, thank you for the compliment, there are little things that I can see that make me think I should slow down a bit and not rush, particularly the edge highlighting.

@M0Rdain - Thank you for taking the time to post even if you are speechless, it helps knowing there are others who are enjoying looking at my work!
