Green is my favourite colour.
I'm not sure there's ever a place for green tint, but especially not on minis that are predominantly dark coloured.
I feel you'd be better off keeping the ambiance as clear as possible so the contrast makes the black pop more, and the colours that *are* bright offset the darks in a really effective way, but that filter washes them out.
Just my 2c.
I don't want to seem like a downer though, I love this thread and it always inspires me to work on my own stuff more

If there isn't a place for green/cyan that isn't a world I want to be part of. I actively make the black pop less because there is a tendancy for the blacks to get crushed. I let the black stay crushed for the nid pictures, some of them are better for it, a lot of them look worse and the historgram looks like a cliff. I don't use filters, I set a white balance and an offset.
White light is really boring I find and often incredibly harsh to skin tones and paintjobs alike. The other problem is it's a moving target to some extent because of the flicker cycle of the lighting in the basement, not to mention when I use the ring light for a setting sun effect it only complicates that.
2000pts game vs lutnit's imperial guard. I ran my deathwatch as chaos, mainly nurgle. I managed to squeeze my count as forgefiend and plague drone into the list so that's cool. Lutnit didn't mind me running a single fw unit.
1) Why have I never seen this thread before? I've been missing out!
2) Damn, those are some gorgeous models. Makes me wish I could paint/model that well.
Awesome stuff so far. Particularly love the city board's posters and so on.
Thanks mang

Big 3000pts 2v2 game. Khain's eldar and lutnit's farisght enclave vs skimask mohawk's raven guard and my deathwatch (white scars). Played on an 8x4 and decided to setup roads again, they look nice but they're a nightmare for dice. Batrep is in the oven.
I'd just like to post a warning that the cancer that is 7th edition might negatively effect the rate of picture taking; we might need a few games worth of chemo therapy (a.k.a learning the new rules) before we get our game time down to a picture taking level
Andilus Greatsword wrote: Damn, I need to get down to Ottawa again for a game some time... Lots of epic shots here.
I'm just happy GW decided their game was no a "shared" experience. I was worried I'd have to pay for it
I'm down for a 6th ed game for now, 7th maybe in a month of two.
Yeah I know what you mean, my local group needs to get a house rule doc written up to make it all work and fix the stuff GW couldn't be assed to. I'm a bit busy this weekend, but I'll see about working something out in the next weekend.
Audio issues with the rep but here's the pictures. This was a 6th ed game I played against lutnit when the the new ig codex dropped. Ghazzy managed to cut down yarrick with a single wound left. Yarrick, do you even narrative bro? lol
2nd 7th ed game. Myself and lutnit vs skimask Mohawk and an00bis. This was a damn good game, back and forth all the way. Ended with a tie, both sides holding one objective each, us with first blood and linebreaker, they had warlord and linebreaker. FYI we weren't really playing 7th, we used this thing called and foc.
hey @Crablezworth, I know you've mentioned cameras like the canon 300hs in the past, but do you have any idea how well a gopro performs for this type of shooting?
varl wrote: hey @Crablezworth, I know you've mentioned cameras like the canon 300hs in the past, but do you have any idea how well a gopro performs for this type of shooting?
Pretty badly. It's too wide for its own good. The good news is everything past a few inches is in focus but the fish eye effect is very strong because it's just such a wide lens.
Yeah, the quality from close-up wouldn't be very good either, you'd lose a lot of the finer details. Helmet cams are great for more intensive activities than 40k.
varl wrote: yeah, I was afraid of that. considering picking one up for other reasons but was hoping it might double for some tabletop shooting. oh well
Boom! First 7th ed batrep is in the oven, hopefully I'll be able to get it up soon. That didn't sound right. Anyway, 1500pts, we used this weird thing called an foc. My orks vs skimask mowahk's nurgle marines. It was a bloodbath. Quite enjoyable game, lots of close combats and it got really gory towards the end. 7th is ok, not really digging objective secured on dedicated transports. Orks are ok, not great. Tried some of their artifacts, was not disappointed in that area. The stikk, oh lordy the stikk. Take it. NOW!
Game vs skimask mohawk's raven guard. We've been playin 1250pts for the last while so it felt good to get back to 1500pts. We've also been playing on a 4x4 so getting back to a 6x4 felt weird. Batrep is in the oven.
3000pt game, 2v2. Each player had a 1500pts single cad list. Thanos ran chaos daemons, I ran death watch count as raptors, khain ran eldar and lutnit ran guard. Very good game, went back and forth quite a bit. Took us about 10 hours but the good news is there's a batrep in the oven
1500pts game vs an00bis's tau. Good game, came down to the wire. I ran deathwatch with white scar traits. Also had a few units of legion of the damned.
That objective marker has blown my mind... I keep meaning to crack on and make some cool stuff with my left over big bases from stormclaw, seeing that I don't even know where to begin now!
Absolutely amazing.
Fantastic photos help a hell of a lot, you should be proud of these images, they look better than most of the stuff in WD

1500pts highlander, my count as nurgle deathwatch marines vs an00bis's tau. No batrep on for this one sadly. Final score was 11 to 1. I had 3 objectives, first blood and linebreaker, an00bis one shotted my warlord with longstrike to get warlord. Very close game, I had some very good luck on saves, especially my daemon prince. Highlight of the game was when an00bi's riptide fired on the cultitsts only to have the blast scatter back and take it's final wound. Narrative forged. In case you're wondering what the cyborg tyranid warriors are, they're count as nurgle spawn and the axe wielding terminator dude is a count as nurgle mutilator.
Highlander has been a blast so far, I beat tau with orks!!
I love these. Its so cool to get a models eye view and see the battlefield from your troops perspective.
The painting is great, the models are good and the scenery is all painted. Its the perfect view of a Wh40k battlefield
And the painting on the Tau and allies is great. Can I ask what the recipe for the vespid was?
Cheers

1500pts highlander game, an00bis's Tau vs Skimask Mohawk's Raven Guard (ultras traits). Batrep is in the oven, should be up soon. Very interesting game, raven guard also had cypher.
It really depends. Some games it gets killed and doesn't do much, though it will usually shred flyers. This game it immobilized a devilfish, put a hull point on a skyray and killed a piranha while driving up onto his objective; for 80 points is pretty useful.
The big kicker is av 12 on the front and sides for it
Bunch of games, been playin a lot of practice games for a highlander tournament that coming up this weekend. An00bis's tau and skimask mohawk's raven guard. As always my deathwatch are being played as count as chaos.
Nice pics as always! Still can't get over how awesome the "spawn" are. Also, the meltabomb dispenser on the Termie is cool - did you build it, or is that an existing bit that I've never seen before?
In any case, I'm looking forward to the tournament, the complete meta-shakeup will be extremely refreshing!

It's from the ravenwing box I believe, meant to go on the back of marine bikes.
Yeah, so far everyone is bringing a different codex so that right there is awesome.
good stuff, as usual. it's amazing how much better the dreadknight looks in a black paint scheme can't recall if I've asked this before, but where'd the bases for the quad gun and icarus lascannon come from?

I wish I had done a bit more of a conversion but black does suit it

First game with my guard vs an00bis's tau. 1750pts practice game for golden skull next year.
Spoiler:
Second game with my guard, against... tau (happy thoughts) . Lutnit's farsight enclave, 1750pts, another practice for golden skull in january. Batrep coming for this one.
Such great work. Angles and perspective are a forgotten aspect of battle reports.
Getting down at eye level makes for so much more epic shots of the little soldiers. Used a lot of it for my Dark Verngernce campaign report. Wish our models were painted half as well as yours.
It really comes down to the basics. An even basecoat followed by a wash and just a dry brush can really make a difference, though some models take less well to dry brushing. Crabs doesn't consider himself a great painter, but his models can come out very well and for the most part he skips line highlights on his marines (his deathwatch have the silver drybrushed followed by a wash and then a layer to make it pop again).

Discovering washes was the day I became a man. Joking aside, they really do make a major difference to even a mediocre paintjob when you get the hang of them, and they don't require hours upon hours of effort either. Look at the difference below to see how even a good paintjob gets vastly improved when washes are thrown in the mix:

Oh, mine aren't painted because I'm lazy. I like building models. Painting them is less fun, lol. If I'm going to spend long periods of time hunched over tiny plastic dudes and tempting back pain, it probably won't be painting. Converting the models to evoke movement and personality is what inspires me in the hobby.
But the pictures would be a lot cooler if they were painted, lol.

Personally I love painting individual models over building (either an army or one thing in particular). The most inspired I'll get is a really cool kitbash, but painting that same model is still so much better for me. Maybe if I had your skills when it came to converting it would be different
3 1500pt nid lists vs 2 1500pt guard lists and 1 1500pts space marine list. Chimera's nids, skimask mohawk's marines (ultras traits) and mine and an00bis's guard. I believe this is only about half of the nids chimera has painted, he's a painting machine. Beautiful army, really great colour scheme. An00bis's guard are based on the command and conquer games's "brotherhood of nod" faction. The level of detail and conversion is crazy, he's free hand painted every nod scorpion symbol, the cyborg count as bullgryns are pretty badass.skimaks mohawk's raven guard are getting scarier, he's added a couple more pods to his army, he's also got some anvil industries dudes as sternguard.I managed to get a vendetta painted up for my guard.
Very bloody battle, the first few turns were incredibly tense. there's really nothing like a living wall of green and purple to help test the old sphincter muscles. We rolled for deployment and ended up with hammer and anvil. Hammer and anvil on an 8x4 was interesting, big backfields to drop into. Don't wanna give too much away, first batrep of 2015's in the oven.
A couple of practice games for an upcoming tournament. First one against skimask mohawk's raven guard, second game against lutnit's guard. 1750 for both, got a batrep in the oven for the second game.
Of course there were. They were the 19th of the 20 space marine legions, their Primarch being Corvus Corax. It was their successor chapters that weren't around.
That said, it does look like the Raven Guard player may be using a mix of 30k and 40k models. Kayvaan Shrike certainly wasn't around in the 31st millennium.

Shrike wasn't, but mk VI armour was; he was the seargent of the dark fury squad who gets a pair of ravens talons, artificer armour and ws 5 stock so I figured it was appropriate. It's also a bit ironic that I'm getting grilled for using one model when crabz' army was almost all 40k models...

lol he's just sensitive about his count as 30k army
1750pts game, 1 foc (or cad for you poor souls who started in 7th). An00bis's nod guard vs my guard. Very close game, came right down to a few rolls and a turn 5 end. Wyvern's are like escalators, fear and respect them. Came down to 10vp for me and 7vp for an00bis. I had 3 objectives and warlord, he had first blood and two objectives.
My deathwatch and skimask mohawk's raven guard go up against an00bis's tau empire and lutnit's farsight enclaves. 1750pts a pop, we chose our warlord traits and of course all chose master of ambush because narrative. There was vodka. And land raiders.
Spoiler:
NSFW - language
We broke a new record, 57 minutes. It was a long day to say but well worth it. Tau are still huge a holes and hopefully we can find a new angle other than tacky space magic to deal with them.

You nailed it, finecast terminator libby with I believe a grey knight terminator sword I believe. The storm shield is from the assault terminator box, I believe it's the sgt's.
1500pt practice game vs an00bis's tau. Rockin professor doctor lias issodon, tested out a tournament list for golden skull. Issodon got instagibbed by longstrike. He's a dick

Practice game for golden skull 3. My deathwatch count as raptors vs an00bis's tau. 1500pts, forgeworld was in. One cad, because we don't play apoc, we play 40k.
Andilus Greatsword wrote: How did you make the Xiphon? Looks like a pair of Pod Racer engines glued onto... maybe a heavily-converted Stormraven chassis and wings?
Got a wip post, it's almost 100% pieces from the fw avenger. Hoping more marine player whip out a xiphon
Deathwatch vs farsight enclaves and chaos. 4 1500pt lists. 2 deathwatch lists (an00bis couldn't make it) both using white scars traits vs lutnit's farsight enclaves and skimask mohawk's chaos nightlords. 1 cad/foc each. We all chose our warlord traits and mutually agreed not to take master of ambush lol
We tried out a few forgeworld units. I had my xiphon in one list and two deimos pattern vindicator tank destroyers in the other, clarence was running a hellblade and a contemptor dreadnought and lutnit ran a y'vahra battlesuit.
As always fantastic pics! I really did the night lords force in this set, I think they enjoyed hogging the spotlight in many of the pics too, that dreadnaught carrying the corpse is very photogenic

Skimask mohawk will be happy to hear that, he's been pluggin away at his nightlords with a good pace.
A huge variety of very nicely done minis there! Nice pics as always. Not to belabor the point but the lighting actually works very well with the still images so no complaints from this grouch.
An00bis vs Deadlights, 1850pts. This was a practice game for the upcoming powerfists and psykers tournament at fdb on the 28th. Batrep is in the oven and should be up shortly.
Tried planetstrike out, 2500pts with the attack/defender foc's. It was interesting, also an00bis got his barracuda up and running. That damn thing's got a 2+ jink
Shot this on the 5D mk2 to give ya'll an idea of the downside of big sensors for miniature photography, it's difficult to keep much in focus; On the upside the dynamic range is pretty sexy.
1650pts test game vs an00bis, we tried out the 4th mission from the tournament format we're working on. 3 objectives with normal secondaries, troops lose os but elite slots gain os and everyone can assault out of reserve and outflank (just not deep strike). An00bis's new assassin is terrifying, he stalked tigerius and blew his brains out, mine managed to off a riptide before jason's assassin put mine in the ground (omg I think we just forged a narrative  ) We both rocked some fw stuff, I had a deimos vindicator tank destroyer and jason had a unit of tetras and a barracuda. Batrep's in the oven
Andilus greatsword dropped by with his wolves. We were supposed to play a 2v2 against tau and chaos but sadly skimask had to drop so an00bis just made a second tau list. 3000pts a side. We've been playing with a house rule called "fear the flanks" and it basically allows units coming in from reserve or outflank to assault provided they didn't disembark from a non assault vehicle transport. It's honestly made the game so much better, the 5th ed nostalgia is strong.
On a technical note, been shooting a bit wider and at time faster than the usual f/4. The lens seems to be even sharper at f/2.
Lutnit's farsight enclaves and an00bis's tau empire vs my deathwatch (ultramarines traits). I had two 1500pt lists and lutnit and an00bis each had a 1500pt list. Each side also had one count as culexus assassin just for the hell of it. Batrep's in the oven.
Registered just to comment as I love the topic and experience of taking beautiful photos to chronicle my games.
I find that its not really the camera that matters as much as it is what's a good shot, and what's not. Settings play a larger role than camera does as well.
These were shot using my smart phone, and people always wonder what camera I used. A smartphone is all, just got to set up your shot properly and choose your distance, angle wisely.

The most important factor I find is stability, so many people try handholding shots and get blur.
2000pt game vs surprise surprise an00bis again, on the upside he brought out a new toy he had just painted, a scratch built ghostkeel. I switched back to ultramarines traits and dropped loth for tiggy. Batrep is in the oven.
On the picture side, goin for a bit more neutral look.

Can't this weekend or next weekend unfortunately (got an office Christmas party/car servicing and have to help my dad get a Christmas tree, respectively), but after that I would be good. And yeah, Nid could be a good shake-up. If I could finish painting my Sisters then I'd love to get them in for a game, but I still have to paint up most of their tanks unfortunately.

2000pt game, An00bis's tau vs Thanos's Daeomons. An00bis got his other flyer painted and whipped up some turrets for his strike teams. Thanos's daemons look amazing, a true feast for eyes. He just put the finishing touches on skarbrand and it was a joy to photograph . Batrep's in the oven.
Andilus Greatsword dropped by with 2000pts of bugs. I gave chaos another try, as always deathwatch count as. It was a really cool game, close combat is back bay-bee! Batrep is in the oven.

Daeomons! Daemons everywhere! Oh and Skimask Mohawk got a new toy painted

Put the finishing touches on a new terrain piece with clarence's help painting all the details, may I present "Sallieman's Gas Station". It's a big los blocker for the upcoming age of darkness tournament. Some futurama and idiocracy related ads.
I'm glad I found this thread. It's made of AWESOME, with a healthy side order of WIN.
Very nice work with the photography. I hope you will post more.
Your wish is my command, good sir
Ok so it's no secret skimask (clarence) and myself are running a 30k tournament in a little over a week. So here's an lcbr special edition
Wip shots of a new big los blocker for the tournament, callin it "the factory" . Still got some stuff left to paint and gotta get clarence to do some finishing touches on the details. Putting the big in big lost blocker
Sadly I wasn't able to get any pics of the tournament, too hard with playin and toing at the same time.
Here's a 30k game I had vs an00bis's alpha legion with my "sons of the sigilite" using iron warriors legion rules . 2000pts, I also gave the namean reaver a try and both of us took splinter rounds on our quad mortars. An00bis's bad ass contemptor puts mine to shame. Batrep's in the oven.
Another 2000pts battle against alpha legion. An00bis whipped up a converted lightning strike fighter and I gave fortifications a try. I also got my count as kyr vhalen painted . Batrep is in the oven.
2500 point game vs skimask mohawk's nightlords. Solid game, mad outflanks. Curze and his raptor entourage managed to wipe out my tyrant siege terminators pretty effortlessly. Managed to put the final wounds on curze with my mortis contemptor, my warlord even fought curze in combat and lived . Skimask's herald model is lookin pretty boss. Some pics of my primus medicae.
Another 2500 point battle report vs skimaks mohawk's night lords vs my sons of the sigilite (iron warriors). Curze got my hq but we ended up tieing the game which was cool.
Inevitable_Faith wrote: Great pics as always. Is this the first time we've had Daemons on this thread? It's a great looking force, really digging that half-snake lady.
Gamgee wrote: I need a new camera after a break in the thief dropped mine and busted it. Lens won't focus. Lucky it even starts. Those pictures look so cool.
Those custodies look great. Love the terrain used for these. The propaganda posters you see in the odd photo just add that little touch of realism and make the whole thing come alive. Great job.
Inevitable_Faith wrote: Wow yeah those reactors are a lot bigger than expected. Fantastic photos as always dude, once again you get a real feel for the battle taking place.
Yeah they're massive, they cover like 2/3's of a knight. Thanks for the kind words good sir
2500pts strickent's sons of horus with emperor's children allies vs skimask mohawk's loyalist nightlords with custodes.skimask brought his freshly painted caladius grav-tank, stricken brought his knight acheron (that thing is fast!). Batrep's in the oven.
Awesome photos thanks for sharing! Really dig the power weapon paint job on the custodes! May have to do something similar!! Love how minimalistic yet effective it is!

Skimaksk mohawk will appreciate you saying that
3000pts skimask mohawk's mechanicum vs my sons of the sigillite. Batrep's in the oven.

Thanks man! It's just black into blue for the blade and then you highlight it with turquoise into white
Inevitable_Faith wrote: 3000 points, that's a big match. Great photos as always, some new terrain in there that looks really awesome. Is the poker chip an objective marker?
Thanks guy . We're lovin the look of the new terrain, necromunda nostalgia. And ya the poker chips are objective markers

Thank you. Please keep it up.

2500pts raven guard vs alpha legion. Batrep's in the oven.
Its a kit bash, the blade is necron I believe, the piece in it is an ig shovel without the shovel part. The power units is part of a meltagun, cord is necron and handle is from a thunderhammer I think/

Basecoat Warplock Bronze. Drybrush Sycorax Bronze (or airbrush it if you have one). Basically the goal is to get the entire model sycorax bronze without it being gloopy, the more sycorax is over the warplock, the brighter the end result is going to be. Wash with Devlan Mud. Dryrbush with Sycorax and Mithril/Runefang Silver, you want to still be able to see the bronze in the mix. Wash with Nuln Oil Gloss. Optional last step of with Sycorax and Silver
So I recently got to play with a canon G7X MK2 and I shot some pics during my last game against skimask mohawk's nightlords. I tried a variety of apetures but with a 1 inch sensor the depth of field was much more shallow than on my S100. The background is pleasing and I can see the potential for like f/8 to f/11 but oh wow is it different. The screen is amazing though, I'm able to focus by just touching the screen on the focal point i wish to focus on. The tilt aspect of the screen is sick, I was able to frame shots in so many situation that wound normally be guess work. I'd still choose the S100 for the kind of look and depth I prefer but god damn is this thing a beautiful cam. Gonna give the 60fps a try for a batrep soon If you're lookin for something smaller than a dslr, oh man, this thing is a gem
Davor wrote: Marvelous. Love the camera work as well as the minis. Yes I know I said it before, but so worth repeating. Thank you again for sharing, love it.
Amazing shots as always dude. That last Corax shot really is beautiful. What are those walker things with dual minigun arms? I've never seen them before. While the models may be the stars I wanna put a shoutout to the terrain, without the gorgeous terrain you guys use these shots wouldn't be able to be nearly as epic as they are now.
I have spent an hour at 6 am in Spain looking at all the 20 pages. The Sly Marbo posters on the 4-6 pages, OMG. Lovely.
The best scenery outside of Warhammer World I have ever seen!
Wow, just wow. I at first thought it was a bit too dark with all the black, but then seeing how it enhances the glow of the plasma weapons, just look freaking awesome.

Thankyou kind sir skimask mohawk takes all the credit for the pretty minis. The walker things are mechanicus vorax battle automata. Terrain is at the top of our list every time we play, gotta build a world

So skimask mohawk and an00bis tried out a 1000 point game of 8th edition. Batrep's in the oven. Also, been putting older pic posts in spoiler tags to save scroll time.
Not too many pics this time, I'll post more when I'm confident that expressing wrong think about 8th ed on dakkadakka won't get me banned every other week.
An00bis's tau command console is still the coolest 40k objective I've ever seen.
Fantastic photos, I think my favourite is the 5th one. Gotta love them cultists cheering around the dead Tau battlesuit. That obj marker is superb, such a cool concept.

Awesome! I thought it looked necron-y!
Owner of the Alpha Legion models here! It is actually 3 parts: a Tomb Kings Casket of Souls guard sword. a Crisis suit Burst cannon barrel, and the hilt is a completely stock power axe hilt/power unit from the Chaos Terminator lord box.

Thanks man I wanted all my different races to stand out but still look great next to each other
Great photos again. The terrain is so wonderfully set up for this match, very thematic. And my goodness I never thought I`d see a Vostroyan force fielded, seriously classic models. Very nice.
