With the release of the next big boxed game from GW, I saw the new style plastic termies and had a thought...

... so I have bagged a few off Ebay and await their arrival to see what I can make of them

I have received my 5 Tartaros termies today so i will be having a bit of tinkering time to see what I can do with them.

The 'fully poseable' arms and torso will be very easy to deal with but at first glance, the legs are useless for my plans so will not be used (I'll have to scratch build the legs).

These (when they are finished) will be more Exo-armoured Hearthguard (just a more specialised unit) .

It should be fun

I have got some now and here is an assembled torso next to an existing Exo:

I reckon there's enough space for some stumpy legs under that torso

It's been a while but here is the latest WIP for the Terminator suit. The head is loose (and will be replaced with a better one), the fists will get lightning claws, and the crotch/legs will be getting more armour... but it's the first WIP from my new house and I'm happy with it so far:

I'm a little further along now; beefed up legs done, just the crotch area to add armour to and then a general tidy up and he'll be done:

One step closer . The legs are finished and tabbed, ready to go for casting . As you can see from the picture, they are designed to fit in one way only (so adjustment would need to be made to turn the body, if you wanted to do that). I have also shown that the legs fit other bodies from the same kit... now it's just a case of getting them cast up ...

Thanks to SDKFZ (an excellent tank builder on another forum) and his excellent Hanomag scratchbuild for a Chimera... I have started converting a 1/35th Tamiya Hanomag half track. So far I have glued the top and bottom of the hull together and then cut down the centreline of the kit. I then cut out a segment about 2cm from each side. The idea is to shorten and widen the kit. So far so good. All the cutting has been done and I have cleaned things up. I have also put in a lot of battens so that I can join everything together (they still need trimming but they need to dry at the moment). The next job is to put in a 1cm spacer down the middle and then assemble the hull. Here is my little workspace while my house is in disarray:

Note... the port is sitting minding it's own business...

Wow! Your skills are off the charts here! I especially like the various Robots and the mechanicus conversions are really good I think - using their guns is a very good choice. I like all the different lines you've worked in as well. The only thing I gotta throw some water on is the two PF terminator off the new GW one. Top too big, legs too small, IMHO, even if it is a squat. Brilliant, brilliant work - I like your clean, bold sculpting.

As for the Tartaros Squat Exo, I have deliberately made them a bit top heavy and once they are finished, it will become evident that they are more geared towards weaponised mining suits than suits designed for fighting.

But, it's fine to not like them . I would never hope to make everyone happy... I'd go for world domination if I could do that

Have a look at this diving suit and imagine that it was weaponised with big claws:

http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u27/Order66Customs/DiveSuit2_zps41303c58.jpg

EDIT - In order to create a full review, I have fitted the legs to all of the torsos from the Tartaros terminator sprues and am in the process of building my little Wolverine unit. Here is where I am at so far :

Love yours, Shaz (I follow your blog/plog on here daily ).

I am in the process of fitting a turret to mine but because I have shortened and widened the chassis, I am going for a small, Russian styled, conical turret. It suits the look and will be just big enough for a scratch built multilaser

Very nice decision as those usually fit smaller vehicles, you saw the massive metal Multi-Laser mine has. (Secret Weapon Miniatures made that beast)

Sometimes you see something that just shouts out to be converted (the Wolverine squad) and other times you see a conversion that just screams out to be tried (the halftrack)... Fortunately, both seem to have worked OK but for every one that does, a couple fall by the wayside

Cheers .

The Squats have not had any love for years... and the plastic arms were a dreadful fit on the metal/plastic bodies so the easiest option was to sculpt my own (I had the putty and it meant I didn't have to trial out a load of arms for a good fit).

The old lasguns were always cool but far too long for Squats so it was an obvious decision for me to shorten them.

The beards were added because there are only three varieties of head... so it increases the variety.

Then came all sorts of reasons to include the other bits and bobs .

This army is very much a 'live' creation. Everytime I see something I like, I try to fit it in to the army and give it enough fluff to be feasible.

At the moment, I am even considering some more xenos allies (Tau, in ther own right)... then of course, a scratch built 'counts as' Imperial Knight

I love watching this project grow! I want to hijack it a bit though, do you know how well Cadian lasgun arms would fit, say a WHFB dwarf?

The start of a Squat force (Using Rogue Trader Plastics). @ 2017/02/14 17:05:16

Post by: Inso

I have seen it done and they fit OK... HOWEVER, they look a little long so you may need to trim them down a little (I would trim off some of the shoulder pad and resculpt it lower down).

More commonly, I have seen scout arms used and they suffer the same problem. It's nothing that can't be fixed but it will take a little extra work

Here is a Googled example of scout arms:

https://www.spikeybits.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/12002864_1027537023952674_7710476736737374203_n.jpg

... and Cadian arms:

I very much doubt that the AoS stuff will get included in this particular army because the new Duardin are just TOO different and wouldn't fit in.

There are a few bits I like but I fear they may be somewhat larger than I want... so I would need to see them in the flesh before I make any plans.

The arm/hand work is astonishing, though have you ever considered chopping off the original squat hands, and limiting yourself to sculpting the arms?

I have sculpted a thumb or a finger on damaged models, but sculpting a whole hand is too fiddly and difficult for me. Above my skill level.

I occasionally use the Squat hands (on pistols/close combat weapons mostly) but I am quite happy sculpting hands... it increases the range of grips I can use.

To keep the ball rolling with these, I have now finished adding beards to the full platoon which means that next, I will be adding weapons and back-packs (as required) :

Just saw your pics of the Hanomag conversion- love the work! I'm doing something very similar myself and will be stealing some of your ideas. I also wanted something with a footprint more like a Chimera's and widened the body (by cutting right down the idle, like you did) but I didn't shorten the engine compartment enough- my Mark I will end up being too long.

I didn't think firing ports along the sides for the infantry inside would look balanced, but you've carried it off. I've got to coordinate where those go with the interior layout I have in mind, because it will be visible with the hatches and ramp open.

But, lots of new ideas to incorporate into the Mark II!

I look forward to seeing more of your work.

The next Hanomag will be shortened and widened in the same way BUT I will be extending the cabin forward so that the 'windscreen' bulkhead will be further forward on the bonnet. That way, I will get the appearance of more cabin space without leaving the vehicle long.

The first one will be used as the army command Chimera so can get away with being different

I bought some of the new Kharadron Overlords today and thought I'd share a few scale pix. Before I do, I reckon that they are a bit big for this current army but have potential for a future faction... here they are:

Lot of potential. Maybe a bit too big for your current, though I always say not everyone is the same, not all dwarves are 4'6'' not all humans are 5'9''. A bit of variety won't hurt.

Got to say I prefer the Old Steel Warrior.

Any chance of a scale shot with IG or SM, just for comparison.

Those few extra details you have added to that tank model have gone so far to 40Kifying it. Nice job!

Those squats are awesome too, obvs, looking forward to see where this sniper goes.

Well... now I've 'scratched the Kharadron itch', I can get back on track with a bit of sculpting so I am now 2 finished and one WIP, where Halfling snipers are concerned:

It was one of those times where I started sculpting, did the whole face at once and suddenly realised it was finished without realising it... it is a common phrase "it sculpted itself" but this time around... I wasn't controlling the outcome so it really did sculpt itself

The one on the cork will get a shielded face like the other two but the following one may well be eating/drinking/smoking so will get an uncovered face... hopefully, that one will sculpt itself too !

Those snipers are looking excellent, would like to steal the idea, not that I could come close to your finished results here.

Thanks for the scale shot, those Forge Fathers are a pretty good scale really, I honestly don't think that a mixture of all the different ones will look out of place, one or two interspersed would look odd, but a fair mixture would look fine I think.

You guys can try what you like... I'll be sticking with what I've been working on for... what?... Two years so far?

The Arkanauts that I have bought are joining a box of thunderers that I have ordered and will be turned into a Demiurg army with lots of drones and very few Demiurg.

I expect that I will start a new topic at some point... but the Arkanaut Demiurg I make will be 'rock people', not Squats.

Absolutely brilliant stuff, those snipers are just brilliant, some of the best sniper models I have seen.

Oh and of course, it's your baby.

Interested to see where you go with the Arkanauts, understand you wanting to be true to your army. Shows great patience and resolve, I am afraid I lack, too flighty in my head, see new things and want to fiddle, you know how some people are easily dist...........OH SQUIRREL!!

Now he is a big boy, took me a few looks to recognise just how big.

Love the idea, and really looking forward to seeing what you come up with. Always fancied doing a few Ogryn myself. So very interested.

I have had an idea for a couple years, of getting a squad of Halfling snipers together with a landrover, the 1:48 would do the trick, as it is a bit small for normal IG, but would suit the Halflings perfectly. Would dec it out all SAS.

BTW I have seen a bit of the world, and actually come from down near you, and would agree, when the sun is out, you would be hard pressed to find a better place on Earth to be. I truly love Trevose Head area, on the north coast, spent years down there surfing.

Looking genius indeed. I'm sure you know this, but did you spy that Squats are back in 8th?

Glad you like these Halflings and the WIP Ogryn... they will be cast and put up for sale fairly shortly

Yep... I love living in Cornwall (South cost for me)... I was stationed here for a few years when I was in the RAF and moved down here when I retired. Excellent choice... I am as happy as a child in a sweet shop

As for Squats being back in eighth... they never went away because... I don't game at all (I just love the miniatures and fluff side of the hobby).

The snipers have all had their basing tabs added:

They have been packed up and will be sent to my caster tomorrow, for casting in July/August (he's a busy chap). Once they are cast up, I will be able to sell some .

Work on the Ogre sniper continues, now that the Halflings have been sent off for casting. I have continued to bulk out the torso and add the muscle groups. It is almost a shame that all this will be covered over... but at least I have a good foundation to work on:

Next will be the lower back and then the feet and lower legs. Lots to do .

It appears that Photobucket is holding me to ransom. If I don't pay $399.99 a year, all of my photographs will remain as those photobucket place holders.

I will not be held to ransom so I will be looking for an alternative host. In the meantime, I apologise for the fact that all of my images are gone... and are unlikely to reappear.

I had no warning... the hosting update that apparently happened on 28th June has obviously come into effect. I now know why I have been seeing the place holders on so many forums.

Fortunately, the pictures still work if you 'right click and view image in a new tab' on each of the placeholders... so they aren't completely gone.

It doesn't make it any less infuriating though

I have switched over to Imgur and will be callously forgetting about all of my previous topics in order to leave those nasty placeholders behind.

I will be making new topics and linking to the old ones (just in case people are foolhardy enough to want to right click on old images).

It will take a while though.

This thread is dead and has been moved over to here:

https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/731849.page

In answer to your question, they were cast in resin but the greens were then sold to a manufacturer who makes them in metal.

If you want some resin ones, I still have one or two sets left so if you are particularly keen to get resin ones, drop me a PM.

If not, you can get the metal ones here (cheaper than resin):

https://cpmodels.co.uk/shop/ru13-halfling-snipers-full-gillie-suits/

When they are painted better (my green scheme was more to show them off, than to be used for gaming) , they don't look bad:

Now... don't reply here, use the thread I linked to above ... all the miniatures have images there .
