"Oh Shrikey.. you came and you gave me a turkey.."

I have sitting on my lovely shelf A captain Shrike ( has not been stolen yet ) and a forgeworld Raven commander in the middle of being painted up

As they are pretty much the first serious 40k I have touched, look I love dragons shutup my god I have decided to blog them as they go from angry black primed men to angry black primed men with white bits.

Stage one: Blacks

The request for Shrike was that he be as close to the heavy metal version as possible, except with blue tints to match him with the rest of the owners army.
After some thought, I decided his black armor would be chaos mixed with a small amount of space wolf grey, and a even tinier amount of boltfun metal.

In general I don't actually like to use pure black to add highlights to, it never looks right.

To enforce his slight blue scheme, I carefully paint his metallic joints/grill with bolgun up to chainmail with repeated blue ink washes. Whites are on about layer 5 in this pic, but you can see the hint of metal in the black armor.

ALL THESE PICS ARE BROOOOOKEN, SO SAD

Stage two: Whites

One thing I do love painting is white, and he has some pretty stark examples. All his white armor areas were basecoated in foundation grey, and given a very heavy asurman/badab wash to blue up the recess's for me.

His whites took around 15 layers of foundation, to spacewolf, to skull white mixes in very very watery layers, one by one making sure to let them dry in between.

These were then given light washes repeatedly with the same mixture.

ALL THESE PICS ARE BROOOOOKEN, SO SAD

All in all, the whites took about 3 hours of solid work.

Automatically Appended Next Post:

Stage 3 : Metals and Armor highlights

Metals were simple enough, wanted them to be slightly worn but still well kept.

Started off with a base layer of boltgun. Repeated sepia washes were added around the grimy areas, and all over the internal workings of his backpack as I wanted the pipes a little more golden/bronze.
Highlights added on in chainmail leading up to mithril with more sepia+ devlin mixes added around bases.

Armor was highlighted with shadow grey darkened down to near black. About 4 layers of thin line highlights added going from shadowgrey/chaos up to shadow grey/white. The armor was finished with a light gloss.

ALL THESE PICS ARE BROOOOOKEN, SO SAD

Sadly the quality of light I had to use has butchered the subtlety of the highlights, but further pics during my weekend days off should sort that out

Added bonus for tonight :

ALL THESE PICS ARE BROOOOOKEN, SO SAD

Ba da ba baaaaaaa - khorne mounts completed, riders on the way.

Excellent job so far. Really nothing I can add for C & C.

You have a soft white color that isn't caked nor overpowering intensity. Just marveling at your work. Keep it up.

Really nice Ifalna... I've always steered clear of both blacks and whites as I wasn't sure how to handle them. You've done both masterfully... looking forward to seeing the bits and bobs & how they relate to the overall look of the figure.

I think I need a nice banner for it to be honest, but I am allergic to photoshop.

Edit: Gitsplitta I am looking forward to it myself The commissioner has requested he be close to the heavy metal version, so he will have red trim guards and mini cape, but I will be adding blues to his accessories to tie him in with the owners raven guard.

I am really excited about the Korvydae though, so this weekend will certainly be fun.

Failing that, paint something up on paper or cavas, pic it and use that instead as a banner.

My attempts to get more work done today have so far failed, as it is so hot today in Cork that the paint is literally drying on the brush before it reaches the model.

I have no idea how, its windy out and there is no sun, but the heat is insane and this country does not believe in Aircon in apartments.

Hopefully by tonight I can get his holsters and purity seals done, but for now I have to go lie on the floor and try not to shrivel up.

Live Inoculations for Kenya have decimated my right arm and left me not at work for the last few days, but to make up for intense lack of updates on Shrike ( his dark metallics eg: piping, belts, tubes etc are now finished due to not being able to paint detail with a bad arm ) I have some pics of a Carnifex my Dad asked for for his birthday a while back which I can get up for tonight.

Sorry for the boring thread folks, will be on to his purity seals and cape once I no longer have shaky paint arm.

Very very watery paint and a lot of layering. I have been thinking of trying out with a white prime at some point to test out whats its like to use in general, but I think I will keep that for a random spare model and not one of these

Greens to be highlighted once more, and parchment to be done, then there is just some cleanup like the black bars over his ammo strip things attached to his fists. This chap will be finished by tomorow and I will be starting on Korvydae.

I think I went a bit too "Ifalna" with the colouring, but I will tone it down the the owner is not happy.

I hate to be that guy, but honestly shrikes ok and a average table top standard. You would have a easier time with the white, and find more effect out of your painting if you primed in white. The reason being colors primed in black do not show the true color you are painting as they do in white. Also the black is extremely glossy you have on him. Your stuff is alright and clean I will pay you that complement, but like I said not amazing.

Re:Ifalna's minis - Celestial WraithKnight Update + Fire Prism for sale @ 2010/08/07 00:32:26

Post by: Munch Munch!

I think if the black wasn't so glossy, it would look soooo much better.
But it is definatley above tabletop standard.

You must play in an area where 'tabletop' means something other than, well, 'tabletop'!

I think this Shrike is a notch or two above tabletop!

Empchild wrote:the black is extremely glossy you have on him

Its been glossed purposefully for this guy, ardcoat watered down.

Im deffo going to try out priming white when I get a chance to work on something spare that I dont mind wrecking. In general I can see it be a lot easier to get stronger pastel and pale shades using it, but a bit less forgiving when it comes to mistakes or problems with paint thickness.

I guess it will be a whole new way to learn to paint.

Edit: As a note, gloss tends to look pretty bad in photos, at least any I take do anyway. I have a feeling its because of the lighting I use. To see him in normal electric room light or day light, its quite a bit less overpowering then it is with a whitelight directly aimed at it. Ill try to take some at normal lighting tomorrow to see if I can show what Im trying to explain

I'd apply a coat of matte varnish so it won't be as glossy, but still be protected against the elements.

It doesnt have gloss to protect it, its a commission and was part of it Only on the black armor parts. Ill try and get less horridly stark lit pics when I get up for sure.

Ah no Munch Munch I didnt mean that in a way you should apologise for, just explaining a bit of method behind the madness.

I took these two just now. Why I am up at 7.30 taking shots of a toy soldier is beyond me, but it shows what I meant about the armor not being as in the flesh.

I was thinking about it last night and if people still think the shine detracts from the armor, what I can do is quite easily repaint the plates and offer the owner the choice when he collects, its not like painting on watered ard coat is hard to do afterall

Thanks for the advice Armorum Ferrum, it's what I joined the site for

I have sent pics to the owner, if he is happy to go ahead as it is, I will keep the colouring, if not I will be neutralising it a bit, toning down the colours used.

Maybe try a brownish gold tassle instead for sure.

May be random, but have you thought about grey priming?

While white helps with light shades, it is also very unforgiving to even the slightest mistake.
Black is great for pre-shading and adding highlights, but also darkens the whole model and makes light colours a real pain in the ass for multi-coats.

Grey however gives you the best of both worlds with less problems ive found.
allways primed grey, never had any real problems.
The only exception to this was snikch, but thats simply because i wanted him shadowed and dark.

Also, the glossy look isnt bad, makes it stand out alot and look more ceramic, rather than flat.

Re:Ifalna's minis - Celestial WraithKnight Update + Fire Prism for sale @ 2010/08/07 12:57:10

Post by: Ifalna

Update from the owner: He wants to keep it as it is, so not going to be repainting the plates or tassle, though I might darken the tassle rope down a bit to finish it off.

Jack, that could indeed be something to test out. I just need to get some spare time where I am not justy doing commission work and can work on something silly for myself, I have tons of eldar and HE's that a white -grey prime on would be fun to use.

Hopefully I have 3 days completely free this weekend, so fingers crossed for that. Still have my Khorne knights to get going!

He is indeed, from the same owner.

Plan for him is to basically keep him the same as Shrike palette wise, but I'm going to be giving him very small amounts of burnt gold trim on some of his detailing, whereas Shrike is all silvers when it comes to metallics, bar his darkened parts on the back of his jetpack.. thing.

What should be my first attempt, Orc, He, Nid, Beastman, Chaos war or Sm?

In my experience... white priming usually helps "light up" a figure... so whatever you choose should have a bright color scheme in order to take advantage of the primer. Bad Moon ork, slanesh chaos, any brightly colored marine, the right nid. Just make sure the fig isn't so "busy" that you lose your ability to assess the effect of the primer on it's overall look.

LOL... yeah... that would do it!

Though, if you really wanted to explore what the white primer did for you vs. your norm, you should paint a figure very similar to one you already have using your normal primer, that way you can set the two side-by-side and make your assessment with clear examples.

Be encouraged. It looks great. White can be difficult as you cannot lighten it. you have to start dark and work forward.

Think of it as it you can do white well, you should be good on most other colors. reguardless it is very clean and I consider that equally important in the model's presentation.

PS.. I think this is more than table top quality. Consider that most figures at my local hobby shop are splashed with paint or not painted at all.

vote me " a fan" , looking forward to see more of your work

I can't say more then what has been said....the person will really like what you have done.

Is the base going to be completed though? Its a real shame to paint a great model and not have a nice looking base to it to compliment it....unless that's what the clientele wants

Other than that....really looking forward to your next model.

He requested the base be untouched as he wanted to base it himself

In general basing is something I include as something the model requires to be finished, so I don't charge for it, but this was a special case!

Ive started on Korv, the metals on my C.Knights and my white primed model which is just a high elf metal boltgun crewman, and god it is really strange.

I've only been playing with it for an hour or two but I have learned so much. Not having black to fall back on to tidy a model forces you to think very differently.

Post by: Ifalna

Shrike is off at his new home and safely on display in the other realms cabinet until its time for use, so I continued with the white prime model I was waffling about before.

I made a lot of mistakes. White is very unforgiving. I would say so far about 30 minutes of paint time on this guy, and 20 more of fixing mistakes.

Badab black to darken white shadow areas was a silly idea, I know to water it a hella lot more in the future. I started the skin tone off way to dark, and the red way too light. I need to darken down the red so it can actually take a non orange/pink highlight. Metals need another highlight but Im not going to spend much more time on him bar to just get him finished, Im not going for great quality, just trying out new ways of using colour.

Other then that, I am really enjoying the white prime, and this dude will be finished shortly. While it demands you to be a lot neater, you get a much better result faster, so it is all about keeping your concentration up.

Edit: And dear god what is wrong with his finger?

It looks good....and seeing how it went for you, it was a definite learning curve for you.

White primed models is really unforgiving and forces you to do things a bit differently, for the contrast of colors does change a significant amount.

One thing I may suggest for doing white cloth is not to shadow it with washes, but to work the whole cloth the same way you would if you primed the model black. Some mistakes people do is assume you need to work backwards when doing white cloth.

For example if you wanted the recess areas to be grey...then start off with a base coat of grey and work towards the color white. It will be tricky to achieve, but the overall effect will be worth it.

Again it will be all trial and error and as you mentioned it forces you to think differently when attempting certain things.

All that matters at this point is that you are learning from this experience and enjoying every bit of it.

Keep it up

I myself tend to find that Blue-ish greys(astronomican grey/space wolf grey) work better as a basecoat to white flat areas - cloaks, robes etc but your painting attempt is quite good - washes often stain the white and its creases ruining your undertone so I'd stick to use them to darker hues. As for red mechrite red with a coat of devlan mud darkens it anf gives it so much dept- allowing you to gradually highlight with richer reds like blood red and adding a little bit of dwarf flesh to lighten it and not letting it turn into yellow or shoddy pink !

Thanks for the tips guys.

I 100% agree about not using washes to shade the whites. From what I have learned it seems you need to build up white regardless, shading it down rarely works.

I went for blood red on the reds which I instantly regretted, but as he is a speed paint test, I can go over it with scab or mecha tonight and sort it out

Something else that I have enjoyed with him is the lack of being able to blackline, something I automatically do with most models.

Not being able to do that forces you into lining with shadowing based on a darker tone of the colour you are lining, and I can see myself integrating that into all my models having done it with this one, so I am really happy that I tried this out.

Doing it hands on gives so much more experience then reading about it, for sure.

Update time

Started on Korv's skin earlier today. I like to do the entire face at the same time layer by layer.

Flesh foundation with a layer of sepia/flesh wash, then the eye picked out and mouth based.

After that it takes a dwarf flesh highlight and then a final elf flesh highlight with washes used to paint in shadow around the mechanical parts.

Teeth are astro grey brought up to skull white with devlan mud around the roots, tongue is mecha brought up to blood.

Edges are untidy, that will be sorted out as I continue

Will have shots soon of a FW greater demon of slaanesh I finished off a couple of months ago asap.

They do!

The older the Raven Guard marine, the paler the flesh, the blacker the eyes!

Still, this looks great - and I can understand not wanting the whole 'zombie looking' thing too, but at that point, keep them helmets on!

Aha! Thanks for the info. I have no concept of fluff.

Ill contact the owner and see if he wants him brought up paler, won't be that much of a problem honestly

As for the white base, its astro grey and necron abyss in a 50/50

Edit: Basically how I work on commissions is that for the likes of these showpiece standards, I sent constant WIP pics to the owner. Any of the pics I have up here would have been sent to him too. The owner of these is very very sweet and polite though, so I have to heckle him to make sure he is ok with colouring etc and to make sure he would not like anything altered! While the mentality of " You're painting it, do whatever you like!" is awesome, it's not my model afterall!

Ok cool, going to repaint the flesh.

Happy with how the tan turned out so I will keep that in mind for using on other models.

In regards to the black eyes, should it be pupil or the entire sclera? Google is being a bit contradictive.

His pupil is black at the moment, but I can make it a bit bigger to emphasise it.

I couldnt be goth if I tried, not thin enough and I love colours too much, hah

Black just lasts longer.

Kenya was indeed spiffing, though very exhausting.

I spent 4 days in Samburu and 4 in the Masai mara, in unfenced camps, meaning you had to be escorted through a jungle in the pitch dark by armed guards just to reach your tent.

I was woken up a few times by an elephant cow and her calf gently hitting my tent while munching at 4 am, and saw some amazing things

Going to be uploading the vids to youtube in the next few days and will Pm them if anyone is interested, hah. Main prio is on painting though.

It is crazy just how much I missed doing it while away!

I definately don't envy the amount of work you put into the White on Shrike, but I can say the result was well worth it. That is one of, if not the most striking white dominant models I have ever seen.

I bow to your skill

Re:Ifalna's minis - Celestial WraithKnight Update + Fire Prism for sale @ 2010/08/31 14:35:05

Post by: Ifalna

First 3 layers of white down on Korv.

From what I learned from Shrike I am leaving his black armour coats untill the white is almost completely finished, as it lets me clean up any grey or washes from around the white areas.
Going a lot faster than Shrike did, despite the much higher level of detailing, I guess the experience I got from doing Shrike first was handy

Next up on the white is a wash layer, 2 more white layers, another wash, then around 2-3 more layers of white untill he glows. Lot of effort with watered layers, but worth it imo.

Also messing around with this rat lord, trying to limit myself time wise to get some speed paint practice, about 2 hours on him so far, max, which is short for me

Bad pic is murdering his highlighting, I will have a better one tomorow :( Bed beckons.

Not sure where to start here

1: Im going to have to steal your method of painting those badges for the termies i have (picked up 5 hulk termies to play about with)

2: Count me in for the vids, ive been stuck in this dead end town all my life
Seeing something like that would make a change, and possibly push me towards taking time off lol.

3: how does being thin fit the criteria for goth?
Amy-lee from evenessence is 1 example, and not soo much goth, but hayley from paramore (i do listen to some reaklly random music)
also, it may last longer, but you spend how long painting?
Not like you would go into shading and highlights on nails...... right? 0_o

4: The teaser is just that
Been looking into it for a while as a project, but generally hate FW's service.
did you put the thing together, and if so, was it a pain in the arse? (the hair on it looks annoying on its own)

5: (and final)
Loving the progress so far, that korv model is looking really nice, and may cost me soon

So, imagine your eyes start out a nice light blue color and your hair is blond.

Also imagine that you've been inducted into the Raven Guard chapter.

Then, imagine that, as time goes by, your eyes turn dark blue, and your once blond hair beings to darken.

Then, as more time goes by, they both get even darker! Maybe your eyes are so blue as to be almost black!

And your hair?

It isn't even brown now - but black as well!

Then, as even more time goes by...

...yes?

Many replies!

Gitsplitta: Cheers, that is exactly what I am aiming for, which this site has helped insanely.

Empchild: The camera blurred the highlights, he is really not as smooth as he looks as he is a speedpaint, so 4 layers of paint/wash per area max. I do think I could highlight that smoothly if I spent the time on him though, but I am forcing myself to be as fast as possible as a exercise.

Cain: Thanks dude.

Jjjjack: I should have the vids soonish, mem cards are fine but camera is having a derp attack trying to upload the pics+vids to our pc's, may have to just get a card reader instead.
The FW Demon was assembled (bar the hair) when I was given her, but she was seriously brittle, I was afraid she was going to shatter every time I picked her up. Colour scheme was once more down to the owner, but she turned out pretty cool. He attached the hair afterwards and based her, so I have no real experience if she was awful to assemble or not.
And no, my nails are not fancy sadly. Unlike the chav girls back home with 10 inch talons encrusted with faux diamonds and printed on klimpts. I feth you not.

Alpharius: Cheers, I feel at least 2% nerdier now!

Timwhosomemaycall: I'm booked up till December so it is going pretty well I am delighted.

Scipunk: Thanks I am starting to really like the white prime now, I have to say. The real challenge at the mo is working out what parts I should quickly undercoat darker and at what point in the model process, like his chest and belly will need a black/brown base now to bring them up to dirty metal.

SONS of ORAR: Thanks for the tip, I can check that out while at work!

Post by: Jackal

Iiiiiffy: lol, atleast you have a cam at the mo
Mine got "borrowed" so ill see that in a week or so i guess.
atleast it gives me some time to work on the termies. (gotta love cell shading for quick results )

Thats what i feared.
I have a tendancy of having a drink (or 10) while i paint, so i think i may have to pick the model up and paint while sober (would be a 1st)
Im sure ill swear a few times putting it together though.

Ive got a black nail too, mine was the result of side door on a van lol.

You missed that those hands were clasping a can of stella or white lightning
But otherwise it sounds like the local wildlife here.

Random Q here, but you do the same as me and paint assembled right?
Any way to avoid the usual problems of obscured areas?

(cant stand glue after paint as im not the most careful person, 1 slip and its back to the brush)

Re:Ifalna's minis - Celestial WraithKnight Update + Fire Prism for sale @ 2010/08/31 23:41:10

Post by: Ifalna

I do paint assembled for the most part.

The only exceptions would be horses+ riders or something with an ignorantly large shield which I would try to add on last.

I get around it with a size 0000 brush and a lot of furious concentration.

I do like to have some JD and coke or Jaeger and red bull while I paint, but while messing around on my own models

Picking up 5 chaos termies and a new demon prince tomorow for a commish, going to be painted up as iron warriors, but not sure if he wants pre heresy (?) or not yet. Will be fun!

Re:Ifalna's minis - Celestial WraithKnight Update + Fire Prism for sale @ 2010/08/31 23:53:30

Post by: Jackal

Ah, i tend to go a step further and keep the whole model together lol.
I just find it annoying to try and glue after paint, even more so with a heavy metal model (thirster springs to mind)

Not sure on exact size of the brush i use since i get them from an art shop not too far from me, but its near on 3-5 bristles, yet takes soo long because of this i end up leaving models half finished.

Had me on the JD, then lost me as soon as you added in a mixer for it
You cant ruin one of the best drinks in the world like that (absinthe '80 being the best, followed by JD then smirnoff blue)
Saying that, most of my injuries while messing about were while i was sober 0_o

Now you have my interest yet again :(
Do you only take class commissions or something?
Yet to see a model i dislike.

also, if you want daemons to play about with, just ask.
A friend quit recently and left me a 3k army, with 4 princes (1 is now skarbrand) all 4 greater daemons and a ton of basic troops.

He was actually pretty flawless when I got him bar a tiny amount of mold line.

The owner had assembled and primed him but from what I heared there were no issues.

Shrike on the other hand only had half a face, for serious :( The side in all the photos is fine, the other was just empty, like a massive bubble had gotten cought and wiped out half his head.

Luckily it was very hard to see unless you wanted to specifically look for it, but it was still an amazingly bad cast.

Well the High elf horses were not exactly.. pleasant on the eye, even with 4 hooves.

The new ones are lovely in fairness.

I have a high elf mage that is so badly molded that the two halfs dont actually fit together, and one side is a good mm higher. It is crazy.

I got the limited edition chaos sorc a few years back and its entire bottom half was just riddled with holes and massive missing chunks.

I got an absolutely shocking box of Sternguard Veterans. Much like your problem with Captain Raven. I took them back and my local GW were excellent about it. They gave me another box plus a $10 voucher (Which I spent before I left).

By law if a product is defective they are (In New Zealand anyway) required to either refund or replace said product... Give it a try next time you get a bad one ^_^

I went as light as I was comfortable to go to without losing out his lovely details :(
Final two highlights are 9/1 skull white to codex, and pure skull white. I kind of feel that if I had not had a greyish base, his detailing on the face could have been lost out a bit, as he has fantastic wrinkles and scarred bits!

Do you think a paler base would have worked out better? Im all about improving as much as possible

No, I think you've got the right balance. If you tried to go lighter / paler the face would of lost all definition and just become too white. The problem then would be the face and the white would look far to similar. It's good, move on to the armor. ^_^

Thats too cute
Thinking about it, im 6,4 ish, so a good foot taller.
I do bet you dont hit your bloody head half as often (labouring job, site work, scaffolding, just everything out to get me)
cheap night out would be a dream.
I generally use a tumbler and go through a glass every hour or so while im painting, which to get that much in a club would be me broke for the week.
Also, the only time ive ever mixed JD i was ill lol, so no more mixing for me.

The good thing i guess is that alot of decent models are highly detailed, which may put newer painters off and give you something nice to paint.

Yeah I do think the Orcs might have the advantage in that setup

Quick update while I take a break from tonights painting.

I am happy with how he is coming along considering he is 3 layers max from primer. I feel more and more confident working with white as I go. Washes are complete lol over white prime.

Korv is on his last 2 white layers, then Im going to tidy his black plates. I will update once that is done as watching the whites get slightly whiter just plain cannot be entertaining While I doubt I will get his armor highlighted tonight, his base colour and white tidying should be all done by the morning.

I also decided to try out making a little wet palette after reading a lot of good things about them, and wow, I don't think I will ever be able to to back to just using a plate/tile/normal palette.
Having the paints stay wet for as long as you want and having such minimal cleanup time is amazing, I am really happy with how much it is speeding up the downtime it takes to keep your paint at the right consistency.

Really liking the how the skaven is coming along, especially the bronze armour.

I too heard a great deal on wet palettes and would like to try it out my self one day. I have finally started to use flow aid with my paints and that thing does wonders, including increasing the dry time of the paint, but too much will thin down the paint and you'll be doing a lot of layers - _ -

Make sure you have a lid for your wet palette in case you get tired or used too much paint...the lid will prolong the paint well over night....or so they say

i'm using a small plastic blister box, one that is just one piece but hinges at the bottom.
That means I can close it again with a really good seal as well as having a nice bit of depth to place the wet paper in.

I have about 4 layers of thick kitchen roll cut to size in it and kept wet, then 2 layers non grease proof cooking paper, and it works absolutely perfectly

I might eventually look for a professional one, but my little one is good for now.

The details on Shrike were so insanely easy compared to this model.
White has taken absolutely forever but is finally all done. Some of the iconography was so small that I literally had to paint on the white with a 00000 brush, then redetail it by painting wash into the recesses. Absolutely crazy.

Anyway, the "hardest" part is finished now, and his blueblack armor base is also on, so time to move onto the armor edge highlights I think.

Ohai shrike fancy seeing you in this thread regarding shrike!

I had to repaint Korvs face already and it didint lose out any of the detail, I just had to use very thin layers. The models detailing is rather severe, unless you really laid the paint on thick, I don't think you would lose out much by repainting. Or maybe you could strip the resin? I am sure I saw a thread about how to do it recently

Cpt.Klaw haha, ravenguard tiem??

Serious question though. His jetpack has 3 parts. The front grill which I painted white, the middle which I left black, and the back part where the actual jets are.

Now looking at the final part, I am not sure how to handle it. Leaving it black is an option, but I am worried if that is going to throw off the colour balance, as it will be 2 large black areas touching with no additional detailing. The only other option I have would be to paint it up silver, which all his doodads will be like his chest emblem, belt, little badges etc, but I think that too would be overpowering :S Bit of a conundrum with it at the mo.

I guess I can just leave it black right till the model is finished and see then, but I have an irritating feeling that there will be too much pure black in that one area :(

As for the model, I have greyed out all his silver areas and badab'd them. There will be a few worn gold parts, like the cross on his knee and the skull on his leg (bone wont fit with the owners army, a gold ornamental skull would) I am leaving armor highlights for last incase the metals get a bit messy.

Hmmmm.... have to see what the jump pack looks like when the rest of the model is finished. You do have the symbol on the right jet, and the studs on the left... those could be painted. That might give you enough visual interest to make them jump pack "balance" correctly with the rest of the model.

Hey Ifalna, this is some seriously good work!

Could you post the recipe for that skin, it looks awesome and i always have trouble doing pale skin! :/

As for the jets, what about painting them with a blue OSL kinda thing? Will try and find a link where i've seen it before.

Here you go, something like this from SONS of ORAR http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/88558-Assault%20Marines.html

Re:Ifalna's minis - Celestial WraithKnight Update + Fire Prism for sale @ 2010/09/03 10:33:34

Post by: Ifalna

OSL could work alright but it would look pretty out of place with the rest of his units, which is a problem. It's also something I would like to practice with before I used Screwing him up would cause massive nerdrage.

The skin is about 80/20 astro grey to skull white as a base. The washes used to pull the detail out were all badab and flesh mixes of varying thickness. Highlights were the base colour with more skull white added per layer untill the final extreme highlight was pure skull white. Trick is to water the paint done slightly more for each layer, so quite thick for the base up to milky for the final highlight.

Hehe Osl is on my list of things to attempt to learn, including NMM also, which although I am not a huge fan of, I do need to learn how to do to a competant level incase it is requested for a miniature.

As for Korv, I think the best thing I can do is just finish off the metals, get the black highlighting done including on the back of the jetpack, then have a good look at it. Gitsplitta is right that the white icon on the back may help balance the colouring, and perhaps just painting the nobbly parts with the same highlight as the black armor will be enough.

OSL is a relatively easy technique to learn as long as your proficient with highlights and glazes. OSL also seems to add a little extra to the model and my friends seem quite impressed if it's done well. I practiced on my brothers Plasma Gun weilding marines and after 4 attempts I can now do it to a decent level (not amazing but getting there ), If you have some skaven lying around Warp Stones are good to practice OSL on.

NMM is frustrating to learn but if your proficient at blending then it becomes easier, I keep on trying and I can only pull of the basics (paint that vaguely resembles metal).

I'm very impressed with your painting prowess and the Shrike you painted looked amazing. As for Korvus, I think Gits is right about the white icon on the back.

Going to wait and see how it looks before doing anything drastic.

Iron warriors have arrived, so going to go spend a bit of time playing with masking for their warning stripes, and a bit of weathering with a sponge. I also ordered some Vellajo metallics as I hear they are superior to GW, and some of their thinning agent. No idea when it will arrive though as I have had no response from the ebay seller just yet.

Hi Chris.

I have indeed thought about having a go at source lighting and other advanced techs, but at the moment I only have time to work on commissions and I would rather not experiment on them! As soon as Korvydae is done I will be starting on tabletop standard termies and waiting on a shipment from a customer, so I can try out some new techniques in between. I was testing out weathering on a sprue last night with a couple of different mixes and some sponge, but I will be trying it out on some models asap

I honestly believe I have had more improvement this year than I have had in total since I started painting, which is almost entirely due to this site and a couple of painting blogs. It is a shame that so many people are not aware of how great some of the free resources available are.

Quick update on Korv.

I personally feel my biggest failing are metals. I am rarely happy with how they come out in general, so before I went ahead with his silvers, I looked into different ways of strengthening the variation in metallic colours. Something I have seen mentioned repeatedly in blogs is to undercoat grey for a strong steel, and brown for a rusty silver metal, so I tried out undercoating with a deep grey and not painting any silver at all into the recesses to leave it showing through.

I am quite happy with how it turned out and I left it as simple as possible. Based mixed dark blue grey, layered chainmail, washed with badab/asurman, layered mithril. I don't want to dull the shine so I won't add another wash on top as I find it really dulls down metals, but I think I will carefully re-depen the recesses around where the metals join the skin with a wash before moving onto his golden hammer If anyone has any ideas on how to improve on this please do tell, as I reeaallly do struggle with metals

Metallic colors are also my weakness, especially when it comes down to shading and highlighting...could never grab the concept.

As the basecoat....I normally go about doing black or grey for silvers and brown for golds.

When it comes to shading the silvers I would use brown/blue/black washes....mix and match the washes to get an interesting look at the end. It can be a slow process but worth it at the end if done properly.

So far the model looks great....really liking the whites. The silver is also coming along nicely.

Keep it up

First off Nice stuff and great job on the raven gaurd guy.
Well for metalics I have a few tips for ya.
1 Silver is a serious pain in the ass to paint and get to look good but I usually just blend up from black to mithril silver it seems to work. then a quick wash in the recesses and viola.
2 If you need help with gold I always start off with 2/1 scorched brown shining gold and then blend up using burnished gold and further blend in mithril silver until about 3/1 mithril/burnished gold. then a wash in the recesses with grimstone sephia.
Great job so far.
Looking forward to see more stuff.

Eric

Thanks all, and happy it was of some help, weetyskemian44

I started off the Tabletop standard Iron warriors termies last night. While the only thing finished is the striping, they just need another 2 gold highlights and then their washes to grime them down a bit and darken the joints. After that it is just a bit of weathering on the weapons, and to pick out the details.

My Tabletop standard is in general 3 layers + 2 washes max, so I had to limit myself timewise with these while still trying to get a decent result.

Midprogress -

Fethin stripes ¬_¬

If you feel like making stripes that's alittle more challenging, try doing the shoulderpads to, I had to use masking tape to get a decent result, but it looks great http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/131878-Chaos%20Terminator.html

Post by: Ifalna

Im pretty sure a soft tip felt pen could help out alright, but it would be very hard to vary width with it, and the only kinds soft enough to not get cought on small amounts of detailing would be very close to a paintbrush regardless.

I started off using a tiny brush and carefully painting each line, but they ended up wavy, the wrong width, too close, too far etc. so in the end I went for a 000 brush with a square tip and painted each stripe very quickly with a straight stroke. The longer I spent painting the stripe the more my hand would shake, so it worked out 100 times faster to just relax and not worry about trying to get it perfect each time.

Masking off the yellow parts would be the best way to work I think, but the parts I was painting were tiny and that would have been stupidly hard to do :(

They are washed now and dirtied down with some weathering on the striping, looking a lot better.

Edit: Nice Limbo I have to keep their shoulders free for the owners VII symbol, but I am doing a IW Demon prince for him as soon as I can get one from my flgs, and that will be to showpiece standard ( korvydae ) so there will be pleeeennntty of stripes to come

Afaik it's not a legion number, it might be something personal as I know he has been playing these for a very long time now. Either way, I won't quiz him on it as it's not really any of my business! The DP is going to be the standard new boxed plastic one, but I have some ideas to make it really pop. Going to try out metallic to flesh blending for the legs to move from iron up to skin (time intensive but I've managed it before to nice effect ) and also make use of a lot of weathering and masked out striping.

Hey, stripes arent soo bad
As a previous iron warriors player and alot of random adeptus mechanicus models ive learned a few things to help

Masking tape is the gak for this.
simply get a piece about an inch long and fold it back on its self (sticky side to sticky side)

You then have a flexible flat edge you can use.

Do you use a clap set to paint with? (ive seen a few people using these, along with myself)

Its simply a case of throw the model in a clamp, then you have both hands free. (painting the stripe and holding the flat edge.

Failing that, if you dont mind touching up a few bits here and there and dont have a clamp, it can still be done.
Simply cut off a tiny piece to use as a flat edge and stick it straight onto the model.
Masking tape isnt very sticky so it doesent leave residue on a model, and it shouldnt damage the paint if you take care.
Your then again left with both hands free to paint by the lines.

Another way: Micro-pens.
Brought some age ago for hard-lining tau models, which never got painted anyway.
I ended up using them for outlines for freehand work and things like stripes.

And as allways iffy, looking great
(naking me want to buy a korv model now)

Cheers ۞ Jack ۞, I will deffo be trying out different ways of getting the stripes done accurately for the DP. Masking off does seem the most foolproof

IW's have all their metals done now and a spot of detailing. All that is to be done now is some washes around joints and the guns, then finishing off their bits and pieces like the heads on spikes etc.

hey Ifalna...

looks like you've hooked up some really fun commissions so far...
great way to paint the cool minis without shelling out the cash...

i'm a little late to the party here, so maybe this has been covered already...
how are you painting the hazard stripes???
are you trying to paint the yellow lines over black???
just a quick tip, i find it easiest to paint the whole area with the yellow you want, and then come back in with the black for the stripes...
this makes it easier to get a nice yellow tone without having to worry about using too many layers, and making too many mistakes with a color that can be a pain to get good coverage with...
a liberal coat of dark brown over the black basecoat, followed by a mid-brown, and then the yellow...
it's much easier to get the fine stripes with black, than it is with yellow...

keep up the good work...

cheers
jah

U MAD??

No I'm no masochist, haha! These are tausept ochre, black stripes, then tausept + white as a slight highlight on the yellow. I can't even begin to imagine how horrific it would be to try and paint the yellow stripes over black. Thinking about it is physically painful! Thanks for the compliment though, coming from a painter of your caliber, it means a lot.

Trim -
scorched brown base
1/1 tin bitz/shining gold layer
thick wash 1/1 badab/gryphonne
final highlight shining gold.

Shoulders-
scorched brown base
1/1 tin bitz/shining gold solid layer
shining gold drybrush
thick wash 1/1 badab/gryphonne
shining gold drybrush

I started painting around 6 years ago now I guess, but I stopped for about 3 years and only took it up again in 2008. It was surprising how a break like that can wither away your skills. It was only when I finished my HE lord that I felt like I was back to where I had left off :S

Final work on the Iron warriors nearly completion, but I need a bit of advice please dakka!

The termies have random tassles on their shoulder spines which I cannot work out what colour to paint. Now usually I have no problem working out matching/clashing colours for the tidbits on a model, but the only colours on these termies are gold and silver, and so nothing is popping out at me as being a good colour to use. The only colours I can really think might be ok are pale grey or dark grey as they will neutrally match the silver.

What do you think? :(

No idea how to continue with them bar a grey..

I also applied some really basic (I cant really afford to go overboard with these afterall )weathering to the chain weapons, it gave a nice overall effect but I definitely need to practice with a sponge and weathering colour mixes in the future!

I have ordered some Vallejo metallics, thinner, and black and whites that should be here within the week, and a couple of new brushes going all the way to a 10/0 which I am pretty sure is just a single hair. I also ordered a small lightbox with coloured backgrounds to attempt to get more coherent and better lighted pictures taken in the future. God bless you Ebay

Finished off the tabletop standard Iron warriors this morning. I find it funny that I have never painted a space marine before this year, and have spent the last few weeks working on nothing but. Curse you tiny spacemen.

They have custom bases on the way in the mail, so the black crappy ones are not what they will be on when they are mailed back to the owner. They took me no time (comparatively ><) so I am happy with how they turned out. The VII was awkward as I have no real experience at freehand, so I am adding that to the list of things I seriously need to practice with. Incoming massive photo spam D:

I really thought the one above had a fancy tongue coming out of his helmet and was considering cutting it off due to how ridiculous that seemed. Then I realised it was a hook, which is only slightly less ridiculous.

Poor Salamander

Weathering attempt 1

Weathering attempt 2

All together now

Korvydae updates will be up in a few hours, going to go grab breakfast now.
His mace, gems, and golds are finished and his armor highlights have their first layer down. He does not have much longer to go at all.

You really went allout with the stripes on that bolter and reaper, very brave. Your tabletop puts me to shame -.-

Post by: Ifalna

I have no idea what the VII is hehe, I'll ask him when I contact him next to solve the mystery!

Limbo, the bolter was the first one I tried stripes on. I made them way too thin. I think they need to be wider to actually be noticeable on the mini's, but doing them small first trained my hand a bit for when it came to doing the rest. Thanks for the compliment too, means a lot.

Korv is well on the way. I want to keep the golden mace looking very old and oxidised. From what I read about space marines, their weapons and armor can be centuries old, so I don't feel a sparkly golden mace would really suit very well. I may put another highlight on it, I may not, I want to finish off everything else and have a good look to decide on if it should be brighter or not in comparison to the rest of the figure as darkening it back down to how it is would be awkward.

And this is to show just how different he looks in natural light. I really can't wait for my lightbox to arrive so I can diffuse it properly, the light in all my pics at the moment is just way, way too harsh.

Lookin goood. I concur on old weapon theory. Although if you want it shiney you could say he polishes his hammer (teehee)

Post by: Gitsplitta

Coming along very nicely. I like you're comments about the gold hammer, however you might think about adding some bright highlights where the hammer would actually be striking objects, as whatever patina had developed over the centuries would be removed with the contact of battle.

Just a thought.

This is the clean vs dirty argument all over again though I think Iffy, half of the people on here will say that its centuries old and should be weathered the other half will say " but its holy wargear that is lovingly maintained by its wielder". At the end of the day which ever way you go I know it'll look fab.

btw I just love the detailing of the face, always makes me think of what a seriously p off Borg drone would look like.

Re:Ifalna's minis - Celestial WraithKnight Update + Fire Prism for sale @ 2010/09/09 17:07:38

Post by: Ifalna

He looks like a borg to me too A really angry one.

I'll leave the mace as it is for the moment, and if when the model is finished it looks too dull, I'll give it a subtle mithril/shining gold highlight to bring it up a bit more. Personally I can't really decide which makes more sense, it being dull or shiny. I am sure they take good care of ancient artifact weapons of legendary strength, but at the same time centuries of dirt and blood would be rather hard to wash out, yet alone the natural dulling of the metal.

Then again if you want to be realistic, a solid gold mace would last about 3 days of smashing into people before it was a solid gold matchstick

Thanks for the comments all!

His armor highlights are done now. I just need to emphasise the change between the armor joint and the plate as some of his metals joints are getting hard to see. I tried to get some pics but the morning light is really ruining them, his armor looks grey in it and it is completely one sided lighting, so I will get some pics up later tonight when I wake up for nightshift I am counting down the hours till my lightbox arrives. It hopefully will cut out having to deal with this crud.

I am a noob in the world of primers I'm afraid. I have only ever used GW black up until very recently when I tried out white :( I have heard good things about grey though.

My new brushes and lightbox have arrived at work so I am excited about testing both out No sign of my Vallejo paints or bases for the termies yet, just have to wait.

The model is coming along nicely. I like how the skin tone been done.

I started using grey primer myself....brings out the detail as if sprayed with white, but more forgiving.

Its a neutral color and found out that you have little more control on your color tone/hue/palette than you do with black or white.

Wow, so the lightbox... made a slight improvement in photo quality.

Maybe not the black background next though, he has vanished! It came with a blue green and white one too Really happy with it for the €16 ish euro it cost! My new brushes arrived too so Im going to go slap that Skaven with them. As for Grey primer, that sounds like a really interesting choice. I'll see if there is anywhere around I could try and get some from to try it out. Always open for new things!

Very dramatic! I got a little cheapo light box off the net and it's really helped out my photogrophy as well. I settled on a grey background as it doesn't mess with the color balance or over-power what I'm photographing.

Re:Ifalna's minis - Celestial WraithKnight Update + Fire Prism for sale @ 2010/09/11 12:41:54

Post by: Ifalna

Haha yes, I didn't think, I was too excited to actually get a photo taken in it to think about what a black model on a black background would look like. He is a floating head and mace of pure rage.

It is a 50 by 50 cm cube, but when it arrived it was folded into a CD sized disc shaped bag. I opened it at work like the pro I am and it literally exploded into its full box shape, so I had to pretend I meant to do that and calmly try and twist it back into its tiny shape at my desk. I think I broke both my hands.

That looks much clearer. try the white one!

What kind of light box is it do you know? Is it big? My flats pretty small but I really want one if I can find it for that kind of price! thanks!

Re:Ifalna's minis - Celestial WraithKnight Update + Fire Prism for sale @ 2010/09/11 12:50:50

Post by: Ifalna

It folds down to the size of a CD, I have it flat at the moment on a shelf in a wardrobe. Its 40x40 cm cube ( I double checked and was wrong about the 50), so actually decently sized when up, but either folds completely flat and square, or into a thicker small disc

This is where I got it. http://cgi.ebay.ie/16-40-x-40cm-Photo-Studio-Shooting-Tent-Light-Cube-Box-/170519062517?pt=UK_Photography_StudioEquipment_RL&hash=item27b3ba67f5

Skaven lord finished.

I held back on this as it was a time test. About 4 hours work in total I guess, bar the washes drying as thats more leisure time than anything. First finished white prime model. Quite happy, even if he is a little messy. I took the pics far too close to the background so it's not blacked out right, I will prob retake these for my site gallery when I put him up.

Edit - new pics below

Any hints or critiques are welcome as this was an exercise in speed painting and I want to try and get the best out of my time spent on this level of paintjob.

Nice, very nice, particulary like the tarnish on the helmet, and I'm not going to go anywhere near the fact it only took 4hours - I guess my super power is sloth-like paint skills.
I'd probably drybrush the grass to tone the green down a little, and something's bothering me about the brazier, but I can't place my finger on it.

The brazier literally has one coat of paint and a wash, it was one of my sacrifices for the speed paint exercise, that and the base :( I will deffo wash down parts of the grass to dull it out. Over white it really is far too bright, and I would be blacking/browning out the base in total from now on. Lesson learned for sure.

It would be take a lot of time but should be possible. Getting the raven off his backpack would likely be the hardest, followed by his shin. Everything else is not very thick and should be possible to file off.

Post by: Ifalna

Cheers Empchild and Limbo. I enjoyed working on him as I had to come at the painting from a different angle in order to get it done as quickly as possible while trying to get it over tabletop quality. I find doing new exercises like that are the most helpful ways for me to learn and improve.

Next in line to be conquered are the right camera and light settings for the photo's. Korvs looked great but the Skavens are slightly blurred and the light is overpowering. It seems you need a lot less light for a lightbox then I had read about, I originally started with 3 but the model was pretty much glowing, so I am down to one but I think it still needs to be further away. Aperture 8 on the camera with a between 1 and 2 shutter speed and iso 80 are what I was using, but I need to lower the shutter speed for longer exposure for a clearer pic. Hard to find the right balance so I need to experiment more.

Re:Ifalna's minis - Celestial WraithKnight Update + Fire Prism for sale @ 2010/09/12 00:34:06

Post by: Ifalna

I did it completely wrong which I realise after checking out some fire tutorials, hah. Basically it was enchanted blue base blended down all the way to skull white in the center, then drybrushed with a couple of layers of skullwhite/blue mix all the way up to white again. There were a few asurman washes in between.

I will try to get some in focus shots once I get home, the blur is ruining the detail.

The backgrounds for the lightbox I have have no greys, does anyone have a link to a nice gradient background I can print out? Grey to white, blue to white etc. Would be a great help.

I am waiting for contact back for this months commission slot owner, so without the DP to start on all that is left is to finish off Korvydae's tassles and then hand him back home, so I might try out some more testing. Maybe some Orcs and Tyranids this time Need to tide myself over till the commission arrives.

Part of the reason I wouldn't want to do this is because I would hate having to give the mini I had painted away after, especially with so much work put in.

Haha, bingo. I also like that models I have painted end up being used in other parts of the world. Gives a strange warped sense of achievement

I would definatly do it - so long as I could get at least ten pounds an hour (skilled labourers wage init) plus expenses. I think I have more to learn yet though.

I would need to speed up immensly to reach that. Korv is on about 10 hours work at this point, so I am miles off. I think to be able to reach the required painting standard while not going over a time limit, you would need to have good experience with an airbrush.

Most of the painters I have seen who ebay their models and make an actual living on it focus on Space marines using an airbrush for the base armor + highlight. It looks great and only takes a very short time.

fair doos. I'm going on what I make doing pet portraits. but they are easy compared to models. I suppose you could take the attitude that if you know you are going to paint minis anyway you might as well have some money at the end of it - even if it isn't really a fair wage for the time you put in.

I don't really spend more than 3 hours on a mini myself (not including drying time and staring at the mini trying to decide what to do next time). But thats reflected in the quality some what

Thats exactly how I see it Weety. I can't expect to be making normal salary per hour when such great quality models are selling for $50 on ebay, but I figure actually making any money at all is still good, as I do this as an enjoyable hobby

Iron warriors are finished and off home tomorow, Korv will be complete by tomorow morning. I know they aren't drawdropping, but they are only to requested tabletop standard.

Any advice on how to up them a notch for next time? Metals really are my main weakness imo.

They look great! I would love to see individual shots of each Terminator.

You could try blood effects next time. And maybe have the blood splattered on the armor nearest the blade.

Love the bases! Custom made or did you buy em from somewhere? Also, does the middle terminator have hazardstripes on one of his trophy spikes?

Those terminators look really good. One of my favorite things about CSM terminators are the trophy racks. I'd really like a rack to have a full tac squad of Ultramarine helmets on it--that'd be a baddass terminator. Awesome!

@ Limbo, pretty sure those aren't hazard stripes on the trophy spikes. You can see more pictures of the terminators on page 7 and I'm not seeing any stripes on the trophy racks.

With your metals, one trick I'm trying currently is undercoating Grey, seems to flatten the overall colour out a little bit.

@Tim : I will try and get some tonight, but can't make any promises as they have to be packed up and on their way Blood would be awesome on the chainsaw.. guns.. you are totally right. I tried out weathering on them but kind of clipped out of my set time to work on tabletop so decided not to go too much further. Maybe some for the demon prince though!

@ Limbo : Those are Ebay bases the owner asked for, but I can't recommened them. Whatever resin mix was used was not one I have tried before, it was like glass. Scrubbing it in hot water and washing up liquid + a nail brush made absolutely no difference to its ability to take paint, and the actual casts themselves were full of holes, actually taking off the bolts on one on the bases. You can see on the middle guy by his back leg that paint is already coming off them. Was not impressed :(

Yes the middle dude has some hazards on his broken spear, but thats because he was the one who ended up cutting my palm during assembly, so he got them as a reward!

@ Coldfire :Haha, his whole back would have to be nothing but trophy racks, it would be amazing

Korv is due in the morning so he will be getting finished up tonight. Will be kinda nice to see him back beside Shrike in his owners store, will be a weight off my shoulders to have him all done, means I have spare time till this months commission slot contacts me, though that is looking unlikely :(

Oh and @ Anthony : Yes that is awesome, I tried it out on Korv and was really happy. These have chaos black + boltgun mix as an undercoat, so their dark recesses are actually still metal. Doesn't show that well in the pic but it adds an extra dimension when seeing them irl.

Great job Iffy, I can second the message to use caution on Ebay when buying bases. I bought around £25 of bases for my army, when I received them I found that the detail is just placed between the troops legs. As such they are useless for my BT tabards and assault running poses. :(

Shazam. Very happy with how he turned out, but it is a shame I don't have a second light to help with the photos at the moment. I went with a blue background because the options of white or black both looked awful due to his colouring.
Dakka is actually blurring the image a bit, you can see it is a bit cleared on imageshack http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/7573/korvfinished.jpg
When I get another light, I may very well ask to have him back for a day to get more detailed shots, but these will do for now.

Now I no longer have any commissions to finish off, I think I might try some experimenting with some of the techs I said I needed to practice with before, like nmm, zenithal lighting and weathering. Or I might just play Dark Chronicle and take a break.

Absolute best I can do with what I have on hand, and even then the light is awful as the side lamps are energy savers, meaning they are pink. If you ignore the pinkish shine, at least you can get a better idea what is happening on this one, but I think the darker one looks better overall. What you are missing is not really a huge deal as he has an intense lack of detail below the legs, bar the skull and purity seals :(

Next buy will deffo be two basic computer desk lamps with white light, the energy savers are a massive no no.

Edit: Whooah, holy crap, 10k views. That is pretty mindblowing.

Iffy, if your looking at lights and bulbs you can allways go with daylight bulbs.
They arent cheap, and will pop if left on all night (had a few do this) but it gives you a nice natural light with no tint to it.

Failing that, the old strip lights work just as well (like the old school style ones)

Either one will give great light for a pic, and you can get a light box setup to work fine with it.
Just watch out though since they do generate a gakload of heat over time.

Aye dayglow are win, problem is I am out of time now. Had to make do with 2 small desk lamps I stole from the bedroom, meaning the light was Peach--> <-- Peach and white on top, so a dodgy effect. 2 small desk lamps will be on the way shortly, but Korv will be gone by then so the pic is just to show that extra bit of detail before he is on his way.

Just arrived in the mail Thinking I will either paint him up as a Smurf in between commish work and ebay him, or if anyone would be interested in taking him and would like a different scheme, drop me a PM.

Got word back about the DP, so construction will commence when I get home Actually excited about painting him, I get to revisit my ollld favourite, grey skin. Hopefully when his base arrives, it won't be as much of a failure as the poor Iron warriors ones.

Thats an option for sure Lennysmash, but I need to make sure he has the best chance to sell on ebay, so I will take a look and see what the most popular chapter selling is ( I imagine smurf )

Demon Prince ASSEEMMBLE

Way too much GS needed. I can fill in gaps fine with it, but don't ask me to sculpt, hah.

Priming starting now. Plan is to keep his armor the same as the IW's, his skin will be pale grey blending down to vallejo gloss black for his claws and spines/horns. Gold trim on all the armor, and some hazards where I can fit them. He will be to character standard, so a bit above tabletop.

The owner of the Ravenguard was so happy with Shrike and Korv that he has asked me to do his Forgeworld venerable ravenguard dread, which is an absolutely stunning model, so I am very chuffed Won't be taking it on for a bit, and it will likely be quite a while till completion as other commissions have prio so it will only be worked on while I'm taking a break from them.

I tried out some super basic zenithal lighting on my old HE bolt thrower guy. I think I have the basic idea, and it became a lot easier when I stopped thinking so hard and just let the obvious lighted areas from above take over. I found treating it more like something I was colouring on a 2d medium more effective then thinking of it as a model, as my brain kept being overrided by what I have beat into it from hours of normal hightlight. He is only tabletop but I learned a lot so I am happy regardless.

True to a point, when it comes to a proper pro painted mini and not the some people call pro painted on Ebay the chapter doesn't really seem matter as much as which mini it is. I think there may be difficulty selling the AoBR commander for much at all. How much were you going to sell him for anyway?
Ifalna wrote:Way too much GS needed. I can fill in gaps fine with it, but don't ask me to sculpt, hah.

I'm the same I working up to asking Blackhand and the like for a full shoulder pad sculpting tutorial. All the tutes I've come across are good but a bit more geared towards the basics, like mixing the stuff and keeping tools wet.

Sounds like some really good colour choices, for the hazards how about painting one of the fists in kind of a broken hazard pattern, to show the hands conversion from a power fist through into its mutated form now. Just idea and one I've probably failed to express properly,

Need to keep an eye on it now the DP is started
Gap filling and sculpting arent that different iffy.
Both require a range of techniques to get right.

Grab some cheap GF9 GS and give it a go, you would be supprised how easy it is once you get the basics.

Sounds decent, but wont the model be very grey/black? I mean, the hazard stripes and trim will break i up, but will it be enough for a centerpiece model?

Pale grey will be enough to make it an eye catcher, it won't be dark once all done. Something very similar to

The amount of gold trimming will definitely help it stand out too He is all undercoated now and I am starting to build up his skin. Will be leaving the metals till last as none are being obscured by any of the flesh, which is awesome.

@ Jack : Oh gap filling is np, I have just never had much interest in sculpting with GS, bar when the gap that needs feeling is huge and needs extra detail on top. My rubber top paint shaper tools make it a walk in the park.

DP is now on his way

First coat - Codex grey + small amount of chaos black over all skin.
Heavy wash badab, then a drybrush of codex grey to help distinguish all raised areas and show some shading.

Eyes - Scab red base, highlighted to blazing orange at bottom. Black slit pupil, white edges to create red Iris.

First highlight - Codex grey with small amount of chaos white, thinned down and painted over all raised areas, leaving very little recess showing.

There will be two more layers of highlighting bringing him up to a very pale grey. All ridges/bone/fingers will be grey blending into gloss black.

lol, being as old as they are, i think thats the most up-to-date paint scheme for them.
However, with the new imp. armour book im sure they will get a new scheme.
Chances are they will simply make the scheme a bit darker than before, and a possible pattern change. (no other chapter really uses patterns)
However, DPM marines wouldnt look bad.

also, i actually have time off work lol, so i get to paint for once

Re:Ifalna's minis - Celestial WraithKnight Update + Fire Prism for sale @ 2010/09/22 08:33:05

Post by: Lennysmash

The picture of the Astral claws actually dates back to when they were refered to as the Tiger claws in the background fluff I'd assume. Therefore any scheme would be fine. The other scheme offered is the Red Corsairs scheme which I believe was chosen after they had been declared excommunicatus, but I have a feeling that this doesn't not match their original livery.

Although it has to be said that GW will probably take the easy way out on it and make it so, how novel of them, more red marines, lol.

I dislike the Dp's face options immensely, not enough options at all, if you wanted to go anything other than Khorne or Undivided, you have to convert it. Even the more Slaaneshy of the options just does not look right at all. Nice set of plastic wings though.

Jack, I did indeed order one. Cant wait.

Reecius, thanks very much! He is indeed one of the nicest models I have seen so far. His claw fist is really astounding.

I did not get as far with the DP as I had hoped tonight as I was only able to start painting at 5am, but he is well on the way now. Just one more edge highlight layer and is skin will be finished off. The grey is Fortress grey and the final layer will have a speck of white added to it, but it will be an edge highlight only. Fingers crossed I can get his claws and horns done before bed, maybe teeth too. My chair is not helping as I have not gotten a proper sized seat for me since moving and I have to hunch over an awful lot to paint, which means repeated breaks for my back :(

If I get his skin and horns done I will post an update later, if not, they will be finished and armor started tomorow He has raised markings all over his legs, they look like unpainted dodgy grey bits in this pic but that is because he has not had his cleanup yet. His legs will look a lot neater once those look separate and not like badly painted side patches.

Edit: Oh, and next month will be a full Lizardman army for this blog. I freaking love painting them, so excited D:
