Eggroll's Blood Angels - 15k pts Army Showcase - Pg 55 @ 2010/08/23 22:08:06

Post by: Eggroll

Thought I'd start a post on the WIP for my Blood Angels. Bit of a background first...started in this hobby 2 years ago and have been strictly a hobbyist. Don't know much about the actual game play as I have never tried a game though I do enjoy the fluff. Since getting into the hobby, I've been mostly buying HQ/Elite models as they seemed "cooler" to paint than the normal rank and file troops. Recently, I bought an army from Craigslist and have since started off creating my first army: Blood Angels!

Here's all the models I have so far:

- Mephiston
- Brother Corbulo
- Lemartes
- Librarian in Terminator Armor (Already Painted, need to repaint shoulder/knee pads red)

- 2 Tactical Squads (Used)
- 1 Combat Squad (Used)
- 1 Jump Pack Assault Squad (Used)

- 15 Units Death Company
- 15 Units Sanguinary Guard
- 1 Command Squad
- 1 Devastator Squad

- 2 Rhinos (Used)
- 1 Razorback (Used)
- 3 Vindicators (Used)
- 1 Drop Pod
- 1 Baal Predator
- 1 Dreadnought
- 2 Irconclad Dreadnoughts (Will convert into Furioso and Librarian)

All the used models have been soaked in SimpleGreen and stripped of paint already. I've started work on the 25 units that will be the 2 tactical squads/1 combat squad.

Here's a picture of the 5 guys I've painted so far.

Very nice, I'd digging the darker blood angel look.

Thanks wizard12, I never personally like the bright cartoonish look of the normal BA scheme so I tried to go for something a bit darker with deeper shadows and darker reds.

Ok. Got some pics of some of the rest of the tac squad finished and in my display case. They have a satin finish which really shines from the camera flash but they are much more matte in appearance in person.

Also finished stripping paint from a few more models, got them rebuilt and rebased.

being a blood angels (or rather, Flesh Tearers) player myself, here are some units that i really really recomend you use, just because they are so awesome
HQs: none of the named characters are really worth their points, however dante, astorath, and seth are fun and pretty good. dante because you can take sanguinary guard as troops, astorath because he removes the death company 0-1 limit and also gives red thirst on 1-3 instead of on a 1, and seth because he is quite hard in close combat with s8 and rending
Elites: Sanguinary Guard are very good, however they are also very expensive and dont have an invul save. Sanguinary Priests are a must. They give furious charge and feel no pain to anything within 6 inches, and you can take 3 as 1 elite choice. Corbulo is nice and hard to kill, but a bit overpriced. Furioso Dreadnaughts are basically venerable dreadnaughts without the 'venerable' rule, but they are still good. i recomend frag cannon and heavy flamer. Mag-grapples are nice but not a must. Furioso Librarian is also nice, but again not fantastic.
Troops: Death Company are expensive but good. I recomend take 9 of them, with 3-4 power weapons and a hammer, with a chaplain(now elites not HQs) in a rhino. Don't take jump packs because they are overpriced, unless you're gonna take lemartes with them, and even then only take 5 of them.
Dedicated transports: Blood angels can now take all 3 land raiders as transports, however being land raiders they are still really expensive and not really recommended unless you put assault terminators in them. O and land raiders can deep strike now too.
Fast Attack: Baal Preds now have scout and fast. Arm them with inferno cannon and heavy flamers and watch your opponant cry.
Remember that all your infantry and dreadnaughts have red thirst, meaning that you're gonna get a fair few furious charge and fearless marines. So even your tactial squads with red thirst are gonna outfight vanila marines on the charge.

Yup, everyone with a SM army needs a plasma gun shy model!

Thanks! I haven't bothered creating an army list yet since I don't know if I'll be playing the game but if I do, I'll keep your advice in mind.

Really strong paint jobs there. Are you going to trim the shoulder pads? I think it'll help break up all the red. Looks just a little too much right now.
You've got skills there though mate.

Yup, originally I was going to do the shoulder trim in black to give more definition but all the reference pictures I found on BA Tacticals had all red shoulder pads except the Sergeants who have a black middle. I tried doing more shading on the bottom half of the pads to give more contrast between the middle and edges but I don't know if that shows up as well.

Thanks. Bases are done with torn up cork boards. Then sprinkled with GW basing sand for the cracks in between.

Good eye. They are airbrushed for the basecoat, shadows and highlights. I then go back and line in the details and paint the metallics. Saves me a ton of time. Also I do my basecoat/primer using Duplicolor Rust Primer which gives it a darker red base.

well your method works fantastically, I've not toyed with airbrushes yet but would love to as i'm all about chasing a good loking army that is quick to paint, and i've always loved the look of airbrushed marines, it suits the shapes of the armour much better than brush blending, and your models are testamount to how good it looks!

Lovely paint scheme, I think darker coloured BA look great too. Makes me want to get an airbrush even more! Just hand painted a BA Razorback, about 8 coats of Blood Red thinned down later and it still looks awful to me, brush marks etc, airbrushing would make it smooth and take a fraction of the time I guess...

@Redbristles In the mean time why not try out army painters range. It may help you cut your paint time, I know it did for me. Especially on vehicles.

Ah, it was a box of Ravenwing Bike Squadron I picked up for free. The upgrade sprue it came with had the typhoon missiles in it and I just figured I'd throw it on the main bike for fun. Don't plan on running a DA army so doesn't need to be game legal.

For my BA army, I've been using Duplicolor Sandable Primer Rust which I picked up at Canadian Tire which is a hardware store in Canada. 10 bucks a can so compared to GW, it's relatively cheap and provides good coverage w/o obscuring detail. I also use their black primer as well and I think it's the best compromise between quality and price. If you can find it, definitely try it out as it will make base coating your BA a lot easier.

Got the other 8 units primed and airbrushed tonight. Primed using duplicolor primer rust colour.

Here's the first airbrush step where I've added highlights using Blood Red airbrushed on top of the primer.

Second step I've added shadows using a mixture of Createx Airbrush Colors paint: Opaque Red and Opaque Black in a 50/50 mix. I also added blue masking tape which is specially designed for painting on the bottom of the shoulder edges so I can add the darker transition between the shoulder pads and outer rim.

Final step I've used a watered down Opaque Red on all of the surfaces to kick back the Blood Red. I personally don't like the orange-ish red hue of Blood Red so this is basically a filter that gives it a richer red colour while removing the orange hues.

Your painting is excellent and a nice break from the blaringly bright red we normally see.
My one problem is the blood drop icons on the shoulder pads, it just somehow seems like a very stark contrast, maybe weather them a bit or use a darker yellow?

Just a quick post of a melta gun marine. Singled him out since he didn't have a helmet and had to do his skin.

Also, a side project is my DA Terminator Captain. Used some parts from the DA Vet Upgrade Sprue including the autogun. Just need to finish up a display base for him which is delayed by my order from Bitz Barn. I'd have to say they are the worst Bitz company I've ever ordered from as it's been a month since my order. Anyway, that rant is for another time.

Thanks. Looking back at the decals now, you're right, they do stand out a bit too much. I'll have to revisit them later and see if I can tone it down a bit. Shading them lightly along the bottoms shouldn't be too much work with the airbrush.

Thanks, though I haven't really started the whole weathering process. So far it's just been airbrushed using color modulation and black lined by hand. I'll be applying decals next and sealing them. After that the weather really starts. I'm going to try out using some oils which are completely new to me. Should be interesting...

Another update...

Finished off my vindicator and quite happy with how it came out:

Propped the model up on the book to keep it out of all the bits of plastic on my desk. Been hacking up a dread arm and making it right handed so I can make a dual blood fist furioso. Pics to follow soon.

Ha no worries. I looked at your CMON gallery and you've got some great stuff there. Really like your Raven Guard stuff.

Alright, quick update. Didn't do much tonight, spending some time to read that book the Vindicator was running over. Just a quick cut job for a Furioso dreadnought. Cut up two old dreads to make the two DCCW. In the picture I just finished filling in some uneven gaps with milliput and still have to file it out smooth tomorrow once it sets. Tried to mirror the arms as much as possible. Right arm was done using an assault cannon arm with lots of cut bits. Managed to line up the storm bolter directly under the ammo box so I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out.

Dropped the other arm in Simple Green and will have it stripped by tomorrow. Plan is to use both arms on an Ironclad Dreadnought body since I prefer the look of the heavy front plating on that model; suites a close combat dread more than the standard one. Got a Venerable Dread body coming from ebay soon which I'll turn into a Librarian dread later.

Another quick update, started working on a Razorback and Mephiston. Managed to get some base coats on both models.

Also did some more work on the drop pod though the interior is still not done.

Got another two dreads, one regular with missile/las cannon and the other furioso built up and waiting to be primed. Will have pics up of those this weekend.

Finally, been ordering a ton of bitz off ebay, once they start arriving, I'll start building some assault troops. Got another 3 brand new boxes of death company coming in the mail as well as Dante...should be interesting.

Excellent. Im glad you to are dabbling more into the airbrush ways. The outcome is just amazing, especially if your doing mass amounts. Great job on the vehicles as well. Did you ever do scale modeling, if so it shows. The vehicles seem to have that extra touch to them that just makes them great alone or with an army.

Thanks! I actually haven't done any scale modeling before though I have seen a few tutorials for scale modeling which I've used as reference when doing mine. The shading I do with my airbrush is what scale modelers refer to as "colour modulation". I've got some pigments and oils as well though haven't actually tried them since those seem to be reserved more for display models where as these I might actually use for gaming at a later time.

Worked on the drop pod since my last update and finished the details and weathering on the outside. Need to start on the interior this weekend.

Great looking stuff. But imho I think you should try to paint lemartes hair blond. I base this on the fluff that BA got blonde hair, and more importantly that if both his hai and the collar is blask there is just to much black. The hair disaperes in the black background and almost give him a bald aperance. This is ofcourse what I think but maybe think about it if your sure about he colour.

@Rose_Mountainz - Thanks and I do agree there isn't enough contrast between his hood and hair. I just couldn't stand to make the guy with long blonde hair. Personally I hate the way they portray the blood angels as blonde pretty boys. I figure with the age and battle SM see, they should look anything but, even if they are vain and narcissistic.

@Lucifer - Thanks. I'll think about modifying his hair a bit to give it a greyish tone.

Here's a shot of my BA army so far in my display cabinet. Shows everything that's been painted. I'm estimating I'm about 15% done.

Going to be taking a break from the BA painting for now. Feel a bit burned out. I will be entering a local painting contest later in the month with a Marneus Calgar and Honor Guard squad. I'll post my progress here for that eventually.

Yup I'll try and post something up next time I do a vehicle. It's pretty easy actually since I usually just do hand painted chips with black on random edges which are filled in with Boltgun Metal. I then do a light drybrush of the edges with Boltgun metal to give it more definition. For the dirt, I do a stipple using the foundation brown along the bottom areas or anywhere dirt would accumulate. I also have pigments but haven't used them since these models might see some gaming at a later time.

Actually it's just normal GW paint. I basecoated the main area with white, followed by a thraka green/asmure blue wash. Then I airbrush the area including any other surface that would be hit by the glow using goblin green and ice blue.

Mafty wrote:what do you use for weathering? paint...powders....specific brands? hand painted or airbrushed?

I use the airbrush for the darker areas of red, I had paint the wear which includes a base of black with center filled in with bolt gun metal. I then stipple on the dirt using Calthan Brown. I have pigments but don't use them in this army in case I play with the models in the future.

Thanks. I would recommend an airbrush to anyone doing vehicles or large amount of models. The amount of time saved and quality a good airbrush can produce is definitely worth it. I spent around $300 for my airbrush/compressor/accessories and am thinking about upgrading/buying a new airbrush soon.

Alright so today an order showed up from MWG which I placed during their big birthday sale. Here's a picture of the loot(left) next to my previous models on the right. All the boxes contain complete sprues. I've just opened all the boxes to checked the models for miscasts (my baal predator has some miscast issues :( )

List of new stuff:
Commander
Command Squad
Ravenwing Battleforce
Land Raider Crusader/Redeemer
Baal Predator
Predator x 2
Razorback
Venerable Dreadnought
Death Company x 2
Terminator Squad
Terminator Assault Squad
Assault Squad x 2
Dante (Not Shown)
Corbolo (Not Shown)

Can't really help it...sale was 30% off which doesn't happen often so I splurged and bought tons. I now have enough of models to paint for a couple of years. I realize many of the models I have aren't optimal for a BA army but since I don't really play, I'm looking to collect at least one of each model in the army.

This will probably be an ongoing project that I will keep as a display army. I mainly like the painting/building side of the hobby so I plan on taking my time with this and making this army include as many of the various types of units possible even if they don't perform well in the actual game.

Xenon wrote:Very nice work.. I like the way you've painted those power armours.. Shading is very well done! But I wonder why lascannons in razorback aren't glowing? :/

Thanks! You caught me with the razorback lascannons though...I was hoping no one would notice. I bought the razorbacks and 3 vindicators off someone who had it prebuilt so the cowling was already in place over top of the TLLC. Couldn't get inside to paint a solid coat for the glow source so I figured I'd leave it out and hope no one would be the wiser. You've now gone and ruined all my plans heh heh. Looking back, I missed the TLLC glow source on my dreadnought as well.

Been awhile since my last update though I've been making good progress on the two vindicators and two rhinos I had primed from before. At the moment, i've finished off the one vindicator and half of the other. I'll finish the third vindi before I get shots of the three together.

The red rhino is also completely done with my first "large" freehand image on the top hatch. Finished that off last night and here are the final shots:

A closeup shot of the freehand. I did the blue shading of the wings with quick bursts from the airbrush.

Finally, I've prepped and primer coated the two HQ's I bought recently. Corbolo's grail was a pain since the model comes with the cup 'filled out'. I had to use varying sized drill bits to drill out the top of the cup which I'll later fill in with some red coloured water effects. So far, all my HQ's have been based with a skull on the base somewhere and I've kept it with these two except dante has a huge pile of skulls on his which he's jumping off of. Figured it would be fitting for him to have a ton of skulls since he is the chapter master:

Quick shot I took a few days back during the painting that shows my armor painting process at different stages:

Starting from left is vindi primed with rust colour primer and shadowed and highlighted with airbrush, middle shows vindi with detailing picked out with black paint by hand and then coated with gloss varnish, right shows decals applied and then a coat of testors dull coat. After that step, I pick things out in metallics, paint the wear, pick out details such as lenses and finally airbrush shade the metallics and light sources.

Thanks though no, I don't do commissions. I only paint for fun and doing this as a job would definitely take some of the fun out of it.

Well I managed to finish off my third vindicator last night and took some pics but the camera ran out of juice as I was about to transfer the pics. Had to wait till this morning for the battery to finish charging and transfer the pictures. The leftmost vindi is the one I initially painted and I can't remember if I gloss varnished it or not - judging from the pics, I didn't. The other two looks shinier in the picture but in person, they have a more matte finish as they've all been sprayed with dull cote. The shininess in the pics is probably from my otte light bulb which is positioned to the right of the pic. One on the right is also missing its headlamps which unfortunately is the way the unit came when I bought it off someone. Anyway, here is the line breaker:

Also, another pic of all the armor I've painted so far:

Stunning. The weathering and grime is well done and adds a lot to the finished models.

One of the best BA armies I have ever seen.

i also like that even though it is BA you aren't just focusing on all the new hotness but are doing lots of core units and models: dreads, rhinos, tanks, tactical marines, etc.

This seems to suggest you love the army/chapter itself and not just what the band wagon crowd and army jumpers are excited about...

Thanks. I'm more of a collector/hobbyist so I picked the army I felt was the most aesthetically pleasing. Also a big fan of red though not in the bright hues BA armies are painted by GW. Not sure exactly what the band wagon crowd paints but I've got just about every possible unit for the BA's purchased so I'm sure I'll be painting them soon

I use Krylon Gloss varnish. It's really cheap (about 3 bucks a can) and never had any frosting problems. I'll apply one or two coats of this followed by one or two coats of testors dull cote. Again no problems with frosting on the dull cote in any weather. I'm from Vancouver and it rains here 80% of the year and dull cote has always worked flawlessly. I tried Army Painter Matte Varnish as well but that frosted almost right away, even when doing it indoors so I would avoid that.

Matrim wrote:i REAAAAAAAAAALLY want to know how you have done the weathering on the Dozer blades. it just look so sexy.

Weather for the blades is first shaded by airbrush. Then I pick out large scratches along the edges with black, filled in with boltgun metal. Then I do a drybrush of edges with boltgun metal to further pick out the edges and show more wear. Finally the dirt is stippled on using a large brush with Calthan Brown. Very easy and since I don't use any pigments, it's all tabletop friendly.

Red Corsair wrote:So you don't actually play....just paint? I bet you could ebay this army when your done to finance your next project if you wanted....this would move fast!

No, never played a game in my life though I'm open to the possibility later on once I get more of the army painted. Right now I"m just a hobbyist/collector and would never think about ebaying this army. Spending too much time and effort to sell it off right now. Money isn't an issue with me since I work full time at a well paying job.

Not a problem, I'm happy to share my experiences. Good luck with your airbrush. First few months might be hard trying to get used to it and learning the techniques but once you have a handle on its use and maintenance, the amount of time it'll save you and quality of results will definitely be worth it!

Ah, well actually I think I'm quite slow. I only manage to do about 1-2 vehicles a week. I've got a ton of models lined up for painting, still need to finish off my furioso dreadnought, then have Dante and Corbolo to do. The arm is from the missile launcher in a devastator/tactical squad. Basically, it's the left arm of the marine that's used to brace the launcher.

It's a normal arm that normally holds a bolter cut up and reposed so it's straight.

I use an Iwata Revolution BR. It's only about 100 bucks so it's quite cheap but dual action with gravity feed cup. thinking about upgrading to a new airbrush soon, might get an infinity.

This topic is a pictorial argument to make me buy an airbrush.

There are absolutely amazing figures and i can safely say they are amount the best WH40k armies i ever saw.

This thread is full of inspiration. I have just started to paint a blood angel army, they were my first touch to 40k about 20 years ago and same as you I'm going to collect and paint them with gaming as secondary goal.

This is a great thread for great looking army, thanks for sharing.

Haven't had an update lately since I got Fallout New Vegas. It's been sucking up all my painting time. I did manage to get some painting in this past week to finish off my DC rhino. Quite happy how it turned out with the skulls on the top and rear hatches. Also working on Brother Corbulo which should be done in the next day or so.

Heh, yup, I made some stencil cutouts. Was a pain sizing them and doing it properly but the end results were worth it. I did the template using just paper and had A LOT of overspray since it didn't stick to the surface flush.

Thanks everyone for the comments.

Finished off Brother Corbulo tonight. Drilled out the grail and filled out the cup with some water effects with red ink...

Nice Corbulo, my only somewhat negative comment is that the chalice is too full and the blood should be slopping out the side at that angle with that depth if you know what I mean.

Can't wait for the next update.

Yup, the angel of the surface is tilted and not level with the ground unfortunately. The actual water effects I used was woodland scenics and is really horrible stuff in terms of viscosity and actual volume it loses after it's completely dried. Picture was taken when it was wet and now it's actually about 3/4 of the way full now that's finally dry.

Be ready to spend a lot of time doing trail and error. I watched a miniature mentor video on airbrushing a dreadnought taught by Mathieu Fontaine. It's what prompted me to buy the airbrush though he makes it look a lot easier in the video. Dialing in the proper air pressure and getting the right paint consistency mix is crucial. I usually use about 2-1 mix of water and paint at around 15 PSI. You can find general airbrush instructional videos on youtube that will teach you the basics like dagger strokes. Also, be prepared to clean out your airbrush a lot since they do have a tendency to clog frequently. Good luck!

I might at a later time. The start of this thread already has WIP pics of my airbrushed tac marines and later pics does show the various stages of my rhino/vindicator during painting. Not really that much additional info on how I paint them, it's all pretty simple. If you have any specific questions, ask away.

Finished off my Furioso last night. Not happy how the banner turned out but I guess I'll live with it. I botched it a few times before getting to the current version which is somewhat acceptable. Put some additional work on the base so that my dreads will all have different bases. The presculpted base of the dreadnought is a bit too plain and common these days.

1st - Excellent dread, although I feel a touch more freehand would be cool, mix in a bit more of the mustard yellow hue and maybe a chevron or 2 somewhere?

2nd - For the tutorials, I am more curious to see how you are holding the airbrush, what goes on in what order, the minute details as opposed to an overall vehicle or whatever. Particularly curious if you are using masks or other things held in your other hand to block the spray at points, or if you are just freehanding it completely. It was a question aimed squarely at the red. I own an airbrush now and am going to start having a more thorough go with it, so that is why I am interested in seeing more about the technique itself as opposed to wip's if that makes sense?

I like the brighter red on the models moreso than the darker red on the dred, but it is still a great dred. I would like more freehand on it as well. It looks a bit too plain, and I always had that issue with dreds since if they are suppose to entomb a hero than i would expect a ton of decorate drawings, names, combat medals, etc. That may be just me thou.

I hold the brush like I would hold a pen or pencil. The smaller details won't be conveyed through just pictures. Best thing to do is to youtube airbrush instructional videos which there are plenty of. You don't have to limit yourself to just model airbrush either, the canvas airbrush might be more beneficial when first starting out and will teach you much of the basics such as setup/cleaning/maintenance of your airbrush/compressor.

Thanks and yes I do agree. I should have placed more items such as purity seals and whatnot on the front armor which does loook a bit sparse. I still have 3 more dreads to assemble and paint so those will get more details added.

Let me first say, fantastic work. This is turning out to easily be one of the best looking BA armies I've seen. I love the darker feel as opposed to the cartoonish coloring most of them have. I have only one small nitpick. Your OSL effects on the Dev squad are fantastic, I actually caught myself squinting a bit when looking at them, however some of vehicle lights, particularly the headlights are less so. It might be a trick of the camera, but it seems like they are lacking the really light/white highlights that make it truely feel like a light source. The actual spill of the lighting onto the armor is almost the same shade as the areas that would be the brightest part of the actual lamp itself, which kills some of the effect.

Example:

In the top pic, if you look at the headlights compared to the search light, the search light has white/almost white highlights where the headlights are far more muted. It could be an actual reflection of the lighting used for the photo, but regardless it shows the desired effect. It's a minor thing and it's really the only flaw I see, as everything else is fantastic, but I thought I'd point it out as it's something that can be fixed fairly easily.

Again, great work and I really look forward to seeing the progress

Thanks though the highlights and searchlights are done with varying intensity on purpose. I'd assume a search light would be a lot brighter which is why there's a stronger highlight near the center.

Thanks Lenny. When I did the servitors with just the standard flesh, it felt too pale. I figured the servitors being half machine would have more beaten up flesh given that they're half machine so I mixed in the blue and red hues.

Nope, no OSL on the techmarine. I don't think he needs it and I've already spent enough time into the guy. If I put more paint on him, I'd feel obliged to do the other details I missed too and that's not something I want to get into.

The scrolls on the previous vehicles were done in red since I didn't really feel like picking them out or giving them names. Maybe one of these days once I have some names for them I'll go back and do them but for now they'll stay that way. I did however pick out the scroll in the land raider and wrote in "Blood Angels" on it. Sadly, I lack creativity in the naming department

Landraider done and photoed. Couldn't get it to fit in my lightbox so the lighting isn't that great in the pics and a bit uneven. First picture is a better representation of the red while the other three have more of an "orange" hue. Also, it appears to be glossier in the photos because of the glare but the finish is more matte-satin in person.

not really comparable to 'eavy metal considering these are done with an airbrush while the 'eavy metal ones are not.
also, painting just red marines is relatively easy while the 'eavy metal daemon prince in white dwarf 368 is a true masterpiece that actually requires a high degree of skill

Thanks for the comments guys. Decided to build my first tank today. All the previous vehicles I've painted up to this point have all been bought off others so they came prebuilt. Since this is the first one I'm building, I decided to go all out with a Baal Pred with fully magnetized weapon options. In the end I ended up with 4 configs: Flamestorm Baal, Assault Cannon Baal, Assault Cannon Razorback and Rhino.

Took me a few hours today to figure out how to get everything magnetized properly. Ended up using as many metal plates in between pieces since I had a limited amount of magnets available. Still have some cleaning up to do on some mold lines left to do but all the pieces will hit the primer soon!

Firstly you are my hero!
Secondly I hate your painting abilities.
Thirdly, I have the same display case as you, I recommend never moving it from where it was originally placed unless you want to take it apart fully. The case loses structural integrity once moved. atleast thats what I found with mine.

Now back to the models, damn, I can't even pick a favorite, there just all awesome. I'm going to follow this thread!

Yeah it's an ikea furniture piece so it's pretty much guaranteed to be unstable. I've disassembled and reassembled it a few times now for moving and it's held up reasonably well. Lucky for me I haven't clocked my gf with it yet. I'm running out of shelf space on mine and need to get a 2nd one soon!

Finished off my beakie combat squad I showed before. Had some bad luck doing this squad which included dropping one of them one the carpet right after spraying a fresh layer of gloss varnish. He ended up being covered in carpet fuzz which I had to pick out with tweezers afterwards. Also, my compressor decided to crap out on me (never buy a Campbell Hausfeld compressor). Specifically the air regulator decided to give out so I have no way of dialing in the proper air pressure. Looks like I'll either buy a new regulator adapter or a whole new setup. Anyway, here are the finished models:

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I managed to pick up a new compressor this weekend so I'll be back to airbrushing soon. In the mean time, I assembled and primed 10 death co w/ jump packs and 10 assault marines on foot.

Also assembled so more dreads

Sure thing, here's the two levels of my display case with my BA army so far. Definitely running out of space.

Eggroll,

Beautiful work dude, but it's your deltolf I want to comment on.

Three points:

1- seal the gap
2- extra shelves
3- lighting

Normally, I wouldn't comment on this kind of thing but I really like your minis. I can advise you on those three points further if you want.

I mean seal the gap between the door and the frame when its closed. This way the inside of the case stays free of dust. Otherwise, you'll need to dust your models frequently. Worth the little extra effort.

Thanks! Not sure how you would seal the gap though I don't have an issue with dust. How do you put in extra shelves? I've got lights installed in there already, ikea LACK lights which work quite well.

Yup, it's freehand.

Well after a break from painting due to the holidays, I'm back at it. Finally finished off my death company 10 man squad. These guys took an insane amount of time due to all the little bits and bobs they have hanging off them. Also, pretty happy with the way the blue glow on the jet pack vents turned out...

Nice one! The jump-pack glow never ceases to amaze me! I will have to try it out on my own DC. Your black highlights are a little confusing, some parts of the model (like the powerfist) have very bright highlights when other parts (helmets & backpack) have no highlights at all, is there a particular reason for this? Also, from the pics, the eye lenses look a little flat compared to things lie the gems. I really like the gold colour that you have got going on there, it looks almost tarnished.

Thanks and you're right, the edge highlighting isn't consistent. This is the first time I"ve done edge highlighting on my troops as I'm not a huge fan of the technique. I built the body and painted those first, then painted the jet packs and finally the head before assembling the three. I started edge highlighting with the body which ended up a bit thicker. Once I got to the actual helmets, I had a better handle on it so the lines for the edge highlighting are thinner and more precise. You're also right on the eye lens, I had just put down a flat white and airbrushed the red to get a small glow over top. I should probably go back and highlight the inner edges with orange or something at a later point. Thanks for the feedback!

Great looking unit again Eggroll!

The sergeant's face looks really nice and the jump packs are really effective in bringing another color to the figs.

The scroll on the front of the Rhino looks a bit wrong though, it looks unfinished in the tank's base colors. It would look better painted in the same colors as the scrolls on the marines. The squad overall is stunning though, really nice addition to your Angel collection. What is coming next?

wolfshadow is correct in that the glow is airbrushed. Unfortunately, there's not much of a tutorial writeup that I can do for this. It's just airbrushed enchanted blue, ice blue and white applied in that order with the airbrush.

I know you get annoyed when asked, but it isn't as simple as that. The areas you are spraying step by step, the distance you hold the airbrush at, the angle, whether you use masking or not all make a huge difference to the result.

We all just love your fantastic work, and the speed with which you put it out! Even a few stage by stage shots as you switch airbrush colors and what they are as you do them would be hugely beneficial for a lot of people I'm sure. The fact is, not many can get the results you are getting, so you MUST be doing something a little differently or better!

Oh, and still enjoying your continued awesomeness btw!

Heh, no worries Tom and thanks. The problem is what you describe can't really be photographed in a way that will convey all the proper info. Best thing to do is watching instructional videos which unfortunately, due to my lack of access to a vid cam, I cannot make. For anyone wanting to learn how to airbrush, I recommend them check out Les's youtube videos under his name 'awesomepaintjob'.

Thanks Gundor! At the moment, all these models are planned for use in my display case and nothing else. I actually don't know how to play the game and don't know anyone else that plays. Maybe once I finish more models later this year, I'll get myself into a shop for a demo game. I've entered my shooty dreadnought into a competition last year and it placed first. Otherwise I don't have any plans to enter anything else.

Ah we are in the same boat! Just a hobbyist... It's amazing you'd think we would focus on individual models, but I can't help but want to see an army lol.

I hear ya for the trouble involved in doing a tutorial btw, it would be best shown in video form. I have only used the airbrush once so far, and ended up doing zenithal on instinct, but something that stopped me from going back and messing around with it more is how long it takes to switch paint colors. I am so used to the brush and digital taking 10-15 mins to completely clean out the airbrush and load a new paint in is really awkward for me right now. I also have no idea besides conceptually on how to mask something properly, especially something as small as a mini. I have thought about using blue-tac and clay shapers to create an effective mask, but I can't help thinking there must be an easier way.

What's your background out of curiosity? How did you get started on these and did you have experience in art or model making before?

I used to focus on doing just individual models but I loved the look of the new blood angels so much I just had to do a whole army. They also look amazing when you see them as a whole.

I actually don't mask my infantry models when painting. With marines, the armor panels are large enough so that they aren't that susceptible to overspray. If there are any overspray, they're covered up when I go over the details by hand afterwards. Colour changing is a pain with the airbrush though I usually only use 2-3 colours in one painting session. I find with the gravity feed, top cup, I can blow out all the remaining paint, fill in airbrush cleaner, blow it out and load in new paint in about 2-3 minutes. I don't do a full teardown and cleaning of the airbrush until my whole painting session is done. I also prime my BA with a red primer so the main basecoat is already done for me before I start airbrushing. I usually just hit the units with highlights and shadows on the airbrush and everything is pretty much done. For my tanks, I do use regular painter masking tape you get at the hardware store though recently, I've been lazy and have been doing it all freehand with no masking as well...I don't notice a huge difference in the end result.

My background is actually not related to art at all as I have a computer engineering degree and currently work full time as a programmer. Painting is something I picked up about 2 years ago as I've always loved the miniatures in the GW display cases as a kid but could never afford to buy them. You can say I'm making up for lost time from my childhood My first models I painted were some sniper scouts with paint straight from the pot. They were pretty bad and they sit boxed up in my closet now. Never had any experience with painting or model making before this and everything I've learned is from practice and reading/watching tutorials. Hoping to get into sculpting sometime in the future...after I'm done painting my BA army!

That's awesome info. I checked out Lburseleys blood raven tutorial, half an hour but man it was worth it. Thanks for the point, I had seen his stuff before, but last time I looked he was showing a tank, not a minis themselves.

I found his silly putty masking quite effective lol, also the fact he lists every product he uses on screen as he works was a nice touch too.

Still, you get better results than he does i.m.o! Anyways, all very interesting and informative. And, for someone without art background and on his first army, this is NUTS... congrats man, it's just all the more impressive now

Thanks Tom. Les is a great painter though I think he scales back most of his youtube videos so they don't take *too* long and are easily followed. Using putty for masking is something I've always wanted to avoid since I feel it takes too long to apply and since I'm doing a large army, I wanted to find the most efficient way of doing things with the quickest turnaround time.

Gibbsey wrote:One thing i do have to ask... (not sure if its been asked already) what air brush do you use/recommend?

No worries. I use an Iwata Revolution BR airbrush. I think the nozzle size is 0.3mm and it's a dual action gravity feed airbrush. I picked it up for around 100 bucks Canadian. It's apart of Iwata's entry level airbrush line and it's served me well so far and I have no complaints.

Any chance you are going to experiment with some Zenital Highlighting in the future? I get my airbrush in 2 days (Have never used one before) but I went out and got the same colors and I plan on trying your color scheme with Jes's idea's on Zenital. Think it should result in some great stuff. Then again never airbrushing ill probably just ruin 200 dollars worth of mini's.

Actually I do use a form of zenithal lighting when I paint my current minis with the airbrush as there is a transition from lightest at the top of the figure to darkest at the bottom. I think the zenithal highlighting you're referring to is just doing a general spray of the mini from above? I've seen it done using just black and white primer to get a basecoat that will show where the light should hit. I find doing it with an airbrush isn't as efficient as the airbrush has a lot more control and doing a general spray from the top causes tons of overspray on other areas of the model which means there's more cleanup work to be done by hand afterwards.

Once you get your airbrush, practice on just plain sheets of paper so you get used to controlling the air and paint flow. Check out some general videos on youtube that will teach you how to do "dagger strokes" which aren't necessary for mini painting but will allow you to increase your control skills. Hope that helps

OK.

First off - wow! Stunning stuff in here!

Now, the questions!

1) What compressor are you using?

2) How did you paint the Death Company?

I'm about to start painting a lot of Black Power Armored marines (Raven Guard) and I'd love to achieve something close to what you've done!

Again, outstanding work!

I do my shade first, then highlight though the reverse would work just as well. It's just a matter of personal preference. I do this for both my tanks and infantry.

Thanks! The compressor I use is a hardware compressor I got at the hardware store...Campbell Hausfeld 3 gallon compressor. I wouldn't recommend it and if I had to spend the money again, I'd pay more for a quieter compressor actually designed for the airbrush. For my death company, they're just black primer with airbrush highlights of black/spacewovles grey in a 50/50 mix. Rest of the details were picked out by hand.

Just posting a quick update of a pic of my assault squad. Just finished doing the OSL for the power weapons. Still need to clean them up by hand, dry brush the base and do the banner for the sergeant before I spray varnish them. Oh yeah, also need to finish their heads as well

I know I sign on every time you post something to say 'awesome'... but... awesome!!

Because of you I signed up for an airbrushing class... I have the same compressor too ironically, so I can only assume you are not working inside??? not in living areas anyways lol...

When you work, do you only have one airbrush, or multiples? I have heard from my teacher that getting 2 or 3 more increases your working speed exponentially, lets you clean up and correct rapidly and leaves you with literally faster, better results. I thought he was trying to oversell me at his store, then I saw his kit and demo... sick!

I'm very excited and inspired and want to try a lot of different things soonish. I've had real trouble finding a suitable place to do my Airbrushing, but am now in a position to solve it.

I thought he was trying to oversell me at his store, then I saw his kit and demo... sick!

Thanks Tom! I've been checking out your WIP blog too and David Bowie would be proud! About the compressor, it's horrible. I already had one fail on me, the air regulator didn't work anymore and had it recently replaced. I also find it's not very accurate so I bought another air regulator with finer control at lower PSI's. I only have one airbrush and don't plan on getting anymore. I try and wait till I have to do a whole batch of models before starting to airbrush which helps the efficiency. Also, I've gotten used to changing colours so that a colour change takes me about 1-2 minutes. What kind of classes are you taking? I think Mathieu Fontaine is in your neck of the woods. I learned how to airbrush by watching his video on airbrushing the dreadnought. I do all my airbrushing inside in my apartment. I try not to turn it on after 10pm and with the 3 gallon tank, it lasts me for a full painting session. I have to give my gf prior warning though before I charge it up so she can hide in the bedroom or put in ear plugs.

Just took a good look through this thread from page one, and i have too say...... its just full to the brim of awesome. I love the smoothness the airbrush give to your armour and vehicles. The step by step is v helpful too. Sorry if this has been asked before (didn't read 'every' post, just most), but what air brush set up to you have, how much was it and where did you get it from. As a little addition, i REALLY love the source lighting, i'm more off an old skool painter, just brush work and blending but this thread make me think iv been wasting painting time, when instead i could have been air brushing. At least from the base colours. Are you going to do some honour guard? i think that you could pull off a great set using met colours and washes with your airbrushing skills.

Seriously great work. Cant wait to see more.

Alright, downloading miniature mentor course on his airbrushing on your say so!

I am considering watching this and deciding whether it would be better to buy an airbrush specific compressor with the class money (was gonna go join on sat) or go to the class... it isnt a mini specific class, just airbrush general stuff.

Thanks!

p.s, how do you set up inside? It would be cool to work inside for me too, but I can't picture not making a mess! (by inside i mean not in the garage or basement, but plopped comfortably somewhere in the vicinity of a tv! lol)

Thanks. The airbrush I have is an Iwata Revolution BR. I paid around $110 for it at my local hobby store in Richmond BC Canada (Imperial Hobbies). I'll be doing an honour guard soon, I have an unassembled box of Command Squad that I'll build and paint as a BA honor guard. Also I have a 10 man sanguinary guard squad to build and paint as well so plenty to come!

Yup, that MM video is quite helpful and Mathieu goes over the operation and usage of the airbrush in detail. It probably isn't as good as taking a class but in my case it was all I needed. I had my eye on a Sparmaxxx airbrush compressor from DeSerres for awhile now though it's around $400. Once my current compressor dies again, I'm going to spring for that.

For my setup, I paint in front of my computer. I got a large Ikea desk that holds everything including my airbrush holder on the right. In the picture, the compressor is just off to the right of the picture.

Nice to see some more models churned out from the Eggroll factory! Seeing the setup is also cool as I'm changing mine for the airbrushes, but now seeing yours I'll leave it as it is.

Loving the OSL on the power weapons, will be something I try when my new airbrushes arrive next week, maybe mix it up with my new lighting effect over metal blades. How many Stormravens you planning!! I think we're all going to be following Tom's photoshop mods though!

Yeah, I never changed much when I moved over to an airbrush. I actually built my own spray both using a large opaque plastic bin with a hole drilled in the end and a large 120mm computer fan installed to pull air out but been too lazy to set it up everytime I use the airbrush. I'm not too keen on the new storm raven and with all the models I still have left to paint, I'm going to hold off from buying one for now. I'm definitely picking up a dreadnought kit though so I can build a death co dual talon dread! Tom's photoshopped version is definitely looking better than the stock one so once I do buy the kit, I might try and build it like in his pic.

Quick update for tonight...finished off the sergeant model by doing the 2nd company banner on his back. Some of the proportions are a bit off but overall i'm quite happy with how it turned out.

Banner looks great, as does the sarge. I would maybe suggest though that you think about doing the wings with beige/brown or grey shadows instead of blue. Or even give them a go in black! I find blue is very tough on white in terms of transitioning from one to the other, whereas the other tones are more forgiving as they look more like natural shadow if you know what I mean?

P.s - downloaded the dread vids, AWESOME! And thanks for the pics of your set-up, I feel much more at ease about doing it in the house now!

I'll look into doing a different base colour for the winged shoulders in my next batch. Glad to hear you like the dread tut, it's got tons of great airbrush techniques as well as intro into using oils for weathering. Also, the airbrush indoors is only good if you're doing it in small quantities and using acrylic based paint. I have ran into the problem of getting red soles on my white socks once in a while after a long painting session but my furniture seems fine.

I've ordered an Iwata Studio Smart Jet, based on noise and size (and they have to ship it to Peru), the advice I had was that it was the best for my requirements, living in an apartment, not too much space etc. I'll let you know how it goes, should arrive next week.

@ Eggroll - like the banner a lot, nice details

I'm hesitant to butt into a discussion between such painting greats, as I'm still fumbling through the slow process of learning the airbrush, haha I received a Smart Jet compressor for Christmas though, and I've got to say that it's definitely small and quiet. I can hear my TV at a reasonable volume when I have the thing running, and I live in an apartment and have had no complaints. It's certainly been powerful enough to handle everything I've demanded of it so far, but again, my knowledge base so far as that goes is pretty limited.

I like the sergeant quite a bit, however, i'm confused about the OSL on his backpack? Is the skull meant to be glowing or is there a piece that isn't yet attached?

I've also grabbed the miniature Mentor vids on your recommendation, can't wait to try them out, I bought their first one (the rackham wolf) and loved the content and quality

There's no OSL on his backpack. It's just metallics so it's probably just that and the lighting that causing it to look like it's glowing. Enjoy the MM vids, definitely some of the best instructional vids out there.

These are beyond stunning Eggroll. They're quite simply the best marines I've seen in a very long time. Each and every single marine is jawdropping, but what gets me is the quantity you put out. Normally it's either quantity or quality, but you're the exception to the rule.

I just finished up the miniature mentor vid, awesome sauce, very nice recommend and something I'd push on anyone looking to learn hobby airbrushing.

BUT

I hate it when they don't finish the model. They did this for the Uncle Meat sculpting tutorial too. They show a finished piece and you expect to see it all the way through, but they end up stopping before the end without really telling the client that beforehand.

That being said, it did cover everything I wanted to learn from it, just would have been great to see him work freehand and 'normal' painting too!

BTW I'm pretty sure the Sarge's power pack is overloading

Ah, did you get a sub to MM? I had one a year ago so I never saw anything past the Festus tutorial. After you see a few, they're mostly the same though I'm thinking about getting the speed painting one which looks really interesting.

I just realized the pic of the backpack and the blue glow in the centre. That's actually from the lighting and the glare. His backpack is perfectly normal

Yeah, looking back if I were to do it again I'd try to get more contrast between armor plates and detailing items. Oh well, I'll keep that in mind for my next assault squad. Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks and feel free to copy what you see. I've copied various methods and painting styles from other fantastic painters as well and eventually come up with my own style. I think I"ll do a Storm Raven eventually but right now my blacklog of models to paint is too big so I'm going to finish off what I have at the moment and then think about buying and painting more. Yup, I only weather the vehicles right now though I'm starting to do a bit of dry brush around the feet of my marines when I'm doing the bases to simulate a little bit of dirt there. For edge highlighting I use sparingly since I'm not a huge fan of the effect. I used it a bit more in my DC since their armor is all black though.

Thanks Sarigar. I think it's mostly past the last few years that the artistic part of the hobby has really grown and expanded. I'm always amazed by the difference in paintjobs and model details when I look at the older models from the 80's and 90's and compare them to what we have now. The technology for model making has definitely come a long way since and with that the painting techniques and methods has as well.

Me and my son love your Marines Eggroll, he is 12 and is in the middle of painting a blood angel style army. Your minis are very inspirational to both of us.

Would you be willing to post a tutorial on how you do your absolutely ridiculous power fist/thunder-hammers and plasma/lascannons, that's probably the best painting I have ever seen.

Point airbrush at power coils, activate airbrush, lightly spray thin layers of bright color, each time focusing more on the coil.

Right Eggs??

Yup, pretty much though you forgot to basecoat the light sources in white and hit any surrounding areas

Small break between painting and decided to build some models tonight. I ended up doing a honor guard squad for Mephiston...more details below...

But first, here are some models I built before that still need priming and painting
Chaplain w/ Jumppack, Terminator Chaplain, Librarian

Sanguinary Guard...I still have an unopen box of these to make 10 in total, think I'll wait to build the other 5 before starting on the whole group. I'm also leaving their wings off till the end.

All the armor I've been slowly building so here's what's included - 1st box: fully magnetized baal pred, landspeeder, bike, attack bike; 2nd box: lascannon pred, autocannon pred and razorback.

Finally my honor guard for mephiston. These are from the DA veteran squad box and since Mephiston wears robes, these guys will work well with him. The banner is from the fantasy empire general box which fits well here for the honor guard for the lord of death. Did tons of chopping to put it in the hands of a marine with a somewhat proper pose. I also used a spear head from a dark elves on cold ones box since the empire standard originally came with the grim reaper holding sigmar's hammer. Had to chop that off, drill and pin the spear. Was nerve racking trying to drill a hole in the spear banner pole that's maybe 1mm bigger in diameter than my drill bit. Also had to scrape off the sigmar's comet from the shield as well. Also spent a long time cutting off all the DA specific iconography though some areas with just a general sword symbol I kept since it's more universal.

Looking very nice Eggroll, though the alignment of the two poles are off so it looks a little odd to begin with. That's an impressive amount of work you still have to do, but I'm sure it will be done in no time at all knowing you .

Altough the honour guard look very cool, I'm afraid that Mephiston can't join them dude. He's counted as infantry, not an independent character which means that he can't join any squad at all. You must always have him as a single model/"squad".

Looks like you are going to be busy for a while with all that stuff to paint! If you really wanted to remove the sword symbol on the honour guard, I managed to scrape away the hilt and pommel and from there, fashion it into a blood drop.

Nice work on the converted banner, looks like the sort that matches Mephiston well. Keep up the good work!

Thanks Lenny though the poles isn't my fault, it was designed that way I swear! Actually I had to double check the pic on GW's site and it seems it is the way the kit goes together. Anything of mine that doesn't look right is solely the fault of GW's.

Thanks usukgoose. An airbrush kit doesn't need to be that expensive and I'm quite sure there are some cheaper kits on ebay that would work just as well.

Yup, that's fine. I just wanted a reason to include the DA vets in my army without it looking too out of place and their robes seem to fit Mephiston. I don't actually play the game so it's all good to me if he can't join them.

Good stuff! Glad lots of people are getting into the airbrushing side of things as I'm sure it'll improve your enjoyment of the hobby. For a creamy white it would be tricky, you can try a white primer followed by a medium brown and then a creamy white with white highlights?

Bastion of Insanity wrote:Beautiful work. Even my girlfriend is impressed and she has no interest in this hobby at all!

Thanks! Now that I know I can impress girls with my minis, I'm going to have to put the pics up on my online dating profile!

Heh, my pics actually didn't show it close enough but that's exactly what I did. Out of the 5 models, 3 have skulls on the chest and 2 have the DA sword symbol which I carved apart to look like a blood drop. Thanks for the reference pic.

Yup though since I don't play, it's not unlikely to assume that I didn't know. Anyhow, I listen to a ton of podcasts while I paint so I did know awhile ago when people were doing the BA codex review about how he can't join squads.

They're just bits of torn up cork board. I'll also be adding normal GW sand in between and on all the black surfaces which I haven't done in the most recent pics yet.

Hey Eggs,

First, a suggestion, I really think a few tufts of green static grass would really help contrast the minis, really minimal though, just a touch. I have a similar if more terracotta basing scheme, I really like how the greens/dried yellows interact with the red.

Second - How long would you say it takes you to complete a piece, squad, tank? If you could, an estimate on the airbrushing and then brushwork after. I am very curious as you seem to be able to pump out a completed squad a week, I'm wondering what that timeframe actually represents in hours, as I assume you also manage to go to work and make eye contact with your GF once in a while lol!

I actually thought about adding some grass to the bases but I personally don't find static grass very appealing or easy to work work. Also, since the BA's homeworld is suppose to be Baal which is more of a harsh barren world, I figured the less grass the better.

For the squads, I think they're around 3-4 hrs per model? I started the two (DC and assault) back in early Dec and managed to get a lot of painting in during the xmas break. For a tank, I can do it in about 5-8 hours depending on amount of detailing. I'm pretty good at managing my time and my work hours are the standard 9-5 so things are good and I do do more than make eye contact with the gf

I agree with what your saying about static grass, it's not my fab either. It can give good results tho, and some dead/brown/barren grass in small parches might give the bases a little extra depth.

Also, not to thread jack.... But iv got to thank u, as you know after seeing your thread I finally decided to finally order an airbrush. It arrived on Friday and iv been practicing with it all weekend.

Here is an attempt at White:

One last thing, could you give us a run through of how you painted up the power sword on the Sargent? It's looks fantastc.

I had very similar ideas for my Mephistons' "Honour Guard", i.e mixing DA/BA parts but haven't started them yet as was put off by the rules. Probably will do something soon though!

Big Kudos!

Sorry about the late response. Been busy lately as I've had some out of country visitors. Haven't done much paint work at all though I have had time to assemble some more models. Hoping to get back into the painting groove later this week though.

Thanks. Your terminator looks great, wish I was able to pick up a set of Space Hulk when they were out. For the Sarg's sword, It's airbrushed starting from black to enchanted blue to ice blue to white with some variations in between. Then the reverse on the blade edge. Finally the edges where picked out with a brush in white.

Thanks EC. I actually don't play the game so I'm quite free to do up anything I want though I try and keep to the fluff side of things. Looking forward to your HG for Meph.

Thanks Calas though I've got my hands full with the BA army as it is. Depending on how the new Demonhunters models turn out, I might get into those

Thanks. There's plenty of good video tutorials on youtube that goes over basic operation of the airbrush. I also recommend the dreadnought tutorial by miniature mentor which is $25 download but totally worth it. Make sure to post your progress!

Ha, don't melt your BA! You can always strip it and start over. My first models weren't that great either but persistence and practice paid off and got me to where I am now. I'm sure if you spend the time, you'll see the improvements.
