I have an obsession with old minis.
My other obsession is getting it perfect... Have you ever noticed that if you take a really sharp photo of a mini and zoom in a bit you start to see all sorts of misatkes and blotches that you just didi'nt notice before? that really narks me off so with the aid of camera, magnifying glass and tiny tiny brush I will endevour to improve. I'm not really a great painter or anything, I just really want to be...

Sadly I don't do conversions these days because I hold my vintage lead miniatures in a kind of reverence and will not cut them - Maybe I should get some cheap plastics and experiment though. I see some amazing things on here. Gitsplitta's rebuilding the mantis warriors is my current fav.

Now if anyone starts going on at me about how the old minis were badly sculpted and new plastics are the way forward I will just have to say that I just don't care, its not a rational obsession and anyway I think most old minis can be redeamed with a good paint job - Back in those days all the non-pro's would just slather on the paint in great swathes and obscure all the detail - one of my favourite things about buying second hand is dettoling off the cr*ppy old paint job and seeing the fresh mini beneath.
So lets cut the cr*p and get to the minis.

These are what I currently have stripped, assembled and undercoated. the one with the scanner thingy is a medic (apothecary). I'm going to do a small squad painted in the colors of my made up chapter The Dark Knights (derivative but who cares). They are related to the dark angels and they borrow a lot from the deathwing colour scheme

and heres the color scheme

and here are the work in progress shots for the prototype - This is the first marine I have painted in 10 years so be gentle

And heres the next two I will do - I hope to learn from the first and make these dudes even better

Coming soon - Chaos squats! Other squats! Eldar! Necromundia! and a really old Inquisitor!

Seeing as I said extra squats I suppose I better pop a few up for your delectation

I'm going for a broader colour scheme for the next lot of squats I do. Throw a bit of red and colored metallics in there. Maybe redder beards too[u]

Hehe. Seriously? But I have a whole army of space midgets to paint and post! I think this calls for a sit in and some placards.

here are some other dudes I won on ebay. Old eldar, two necromunda types, a mutant space pirate and an oldschool assassin.

the quote is from Jarhead (or Full metal jacket) and is a Marines homage to his rifle.

I love the older minatures they rock. have just started stipping a load down that i found laying around to repaint.

Post by: Lennysmash

Lets stick with it being a Full Metal Jacket quote it's an eminently better film.

Always fun to see some older models, especially some of the Eldar ones. As to the Imperial assassin I never could shake the image of sub zero or scorpion from my mind with that one. It may be a cool little pop culture homage if you were to paint him up in some of the old mortal combat colours.

Like what I see, so you have my attention. Subscribed.

I assuem that some of these models have had paint on them at some point. How are you stripping them?

Quest for Perfection, Crimson fists & Helbrute @ 2010/09/06 18:47:01

Post by: weetyskemian44

Anthony_D its dettol I use. But anything which contains isopropyl alchohol will do, so cheap poundshop stuff will work but not as well. The dettol softens up the paint and it tears off in sticky threads. I recomend leaving metal models for two days in pure dettol (it corrodes plastic a bit so just over night for plastic) then fill a sink with water and a big splash of dettol, get some rubber gloves on or your hands will stink and use a stiff brush that you don't mind distroying to rub off the acrylic. I often have to finish off the bits of paint in cracks with a needle though...

The quote is most defo from full metal jacket. I felt that jarhead was a depressing letdown (in that of course it perfectly described the first gulf war).

lennysmash I love your idea about the mortal combat dudes!! I would probs go for scorpion cos I like the color green.

I will have finished some more marines soon - they are going to be an improvement on the first! Im getting better at fine work as I just bought a thinner paint brush.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Look what came out of the paint stripper!!

there are 2 heavies, one dude with a flamer, champions, a captain or two, 2 apothecaries a chaplain, 3 or four librarians and a lot of standard troops. A couple are duplicated so if anyone wants to make me an offer then I would consider it. I hate painting the same model twice unless its years later.

Does anyone know if the dude with his arms in the air and a hood on his head (there are two of him) is an inquisitor? I bought him on the assumption that he was but all it says on his slotta is 'Marine'.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
And here are the Humans - top left has had his head swapped for a beakie helmet. Two along with the chainsword and gas mask is an imperial captain. Bottom right is a necro delaque ganger, next to him is one of the very first imperial guards - a heavy infantry as he was known and then next to him with the heavy machine gun is a dude from chainsaw warrior - even older than rogue trader I think

And then there is this superb Imperial guardswoman. I picture her as being a bit like Pvt. Vasquez the cocky Hispanic marine chick from 'Aliens', cept she hasn't got such a big gun.

I'm trying out something new with the paint job - I have spread armour wash over the primed model to give a shaded grey, and then drybrushed heavily in white. I'm going to paint the colours over in watery layers and finish with some extra highlights - this blog by Ilfalna inspired me: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/307516.page

I personally use nail polish remover for my metal minis leave them in for around 20 mins then scrub, back in for another 20 then scrub and finally wash in warm soapy water. It is very important not to wash the metals before the final stage as this causes the paint to coagulate into a sticky gunk. if the models is a little messy whilst you are scrubing just dip the bruch into the nail polish remover and use the this to clean off the debris.

Hope this helps as two days sounds rather a long time to wait for anything in this hobby

He certainly is a marine from 1988, I believe it is only later that he became described as a librarian. If you are doing a project of this type then stuff of legends will help you out immensely, I've included a link to the citadel homepage but remember not all of the early minis were produced by citadel. The site has catalogues for these as well.

There were 3 chainsaw warrior models. On your group photo, 3rd row down, 4 from left...is that a fabled Rhino Warrior?

I went to B'n'Q yesterday and was banned from buying nitro mors by the wife, instead i picked up white spirit, brush cleaner and wall paper stripper as basically the idea i had was how to undo what abuse I'd given the models.

Stuck some test minis in and they scrubbed up clean after 12 hours or so, the bases turned to mush though so plastics need to be watched but do clean without loosing details if you only dip them for about an hour or so.

This is the wip for private Vasquez. For some reason i cant get my camera to focus today. She is gona look cool.

Thats the rhino warrior I think - he was also described as heavy infantryman on solelegends I think.

Nitro Mors? Isn't that like a heavy duty industrial varnish stripper? So It gets the paint off really well but then you have cancer? hehehe the things we do for love.

Heres a couple of dudes I finished off real quick like. Not happy with the delaque though, i love the colors but he is not well executed (thats probably cos I didn't have the extra thin brush when I did his basic colours.

The other dude is a mutant pirate from the space pirate set!! He would make an excellent cultist.

Ebay. I've got about ten unpainted ones coming soon. 99p each. The secret is is to find em when they are first listed and have no bids - and just put a 99p bid on EVERY SINGLE ONE. You wont win most of em, most of em will sell for 4-5 quid (10dollar?) but a few will slip through the net

Weety!

Knowing how difficult it is to strip and paint these miniatures I think you are doing a awesome job!!

Can I convert your guardsmen to my cause? They seem to have smarter uniforms than mine!! :-p

Have you got any squat heavy weapons/trikes?

Ohhh yes - I'm subscibed to your thread. I love your big old school army - It is bigger than mine.

If you mean by that can you steal my paint scheme (mars regiment) then yes. On the other hand if you want to buy them, yes but with reservations (I guess I will have to think about it basically) I have a few duplicates that I could paint up and sell for sure but I'm not sure about the rest. I had always intended to sell on eventually - so I can buy more and paint them too (never ending hobby for someone with limited space and money).

I have two squat heavys one special weapon!! but no trikes or bikes (too expensive - people keep outbidding me)

I shall look up this mars regiment! I like the respirator on the SM. If you don't mind I will half inch that - as I think I have the same model.

I really like the look of your SMs. Are you just drybrushing the bolters? Can you give me some tips - your painting is clearer than mine!

Thanks Kid.

Did some painting yesterday and tried out my beach sand for basing. Basing worked great, I based one of my random minis - this nurgle marine, and I'm pleased with the results

Then I painted another RT marine. Stil having trouble with up-close smoothness. It doesn't really matter when you look at them with the naked eye, but the camera is cruel. So I went to GW today and got some proper spary primer - which is much smoother tan the crappy car primer I was using. So there should be a marked improvement soon.

Post by: weetyskemian44

Yeah its beach sand! I live next to the coast so its easy - I would recomend getting very fine sand and then some corser sand for when you want it. If you just walk along a beach for long enough you will find different grades of sand. Its a nice walk too.

Dipping - well all the ones I did a while ago (most of the imperial guard and the goblins and the squats) I dipped in a mixture of fleash wash and green wash which is my best approximation of devlin mud. Its a sort of all round shade which will do for most things - although from there I had to repaint the skin tones and squat beards.

More recently I have not used this and I add washes were and when needed. What I do do is after I spray them with white primer I wash all over with armour wash to give a shaded grey base - this eems to help me with neatness and picking out detail.

If you have a bit of cash to burn look up army painter dipping wash as It looks like a really quick and easy way to shade an army

Quest for Perfection, Crimson fists & Helbrute @ 2010/09/13 10:32:30

They sell the washes in the hobby store here (manila)...do I literally just dip them in it? Sorry I am going a little bit of topic, but you have nicely painted minies which are basically the same as mine...except they are nicely painted! haha

well you can just dip em and then shake them off. But if you drop the mini when yoy shake then its a disaster. Or you can just load up a brush and wipe it on all over. You might still need to shake, depending on how much wash is on. Shaking just removes the excess

another way of doing it is to use a second, dry brush to leach some of the excess ink.

I got this elegant beauty for 99p plus 2 pound postage.
its made out of all the same parts as the wraithlord but its got no arms or torso. I have a feeling that it was a cheaper alternative they had back in 2nd edition. Not sure, will do research. Anyone can tell me and save me the effort.

But seriously 99p!!! I have a feeling I'm going yellow and blue for my craftworld colour scheme, Nearly got an army now!!

That looks like some-one has built a Scout Walker. It was a homebrew variation on the War Walker/Wraithlord components by a Mr Rupert Hammerton Fraser (a Golden Daemon winner, apparently), the 2nd edition rules and datafax for which were featured in Citadel Journal issue 8.

Apothecary update:

I want to do my hooded librarian next. If you look at the picts of unpainted marines he is the one waving a sword above his head.

I want to go totally over board with free hand on him - he has big greaves which can be done and his cloaky thing. I think he will be a very dark blue - with lighter blue free hand spirals and chapter symbols. His cloak will be errrrrrr purple? maybe not, maybe grey. I will do some paint sketches to try and figure it out

Automatically Appended Next Post:
First basic steps with the librarian.

Dark blue (moody blue?) for the armour - needs retouching as the wash spread. sunburst yellow, with yellow wash and red wash for cloak and sword. I feel good about this basic paint scheme. Its really going to shout "LOOK AT ME, i AM GOING TO KICK YOUR ASS" and will stand out like a sore willy in my army of white and pale green!

Next I just need to tidy him up and add colour for pouches guns pipes etc and I can begin on the excessive free hand.

there is a few flaws in the highlighting on the greaves that I just didn't see until I uploaded the photo. Once I correct them I'm gona do some lightning blasts (for the easy option) or If I feel brave I might try some squared off spirals in a pale blue

I do wonder how I will progress further with the free hand - this is obviously ok but not really good enough to make me happy, and brushes just don't come any smaller- anyone here ever try painting with a pin?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Right - today I purchased from a lovely little outfit called home hardware:
one adjustable magnifying glass with "helping hands" clips to hold mini in place
one hand drill and tiny drill bits
two rolls of wire
snips
superglue solvent for taking apart minis
fine metal saw.
to add to my already purchased green stuff and milliput. Now when I get the chance I can do conversions! hooray. First off I want to make some banner poles for my space marines.

Problem is I have stacks of minis that need painting - what to do first?

Today I tried sculpting in green stuff for the first time - kudos to Ambull for getting me enthused about it. I didin't find it as hard as I thought to sculpt on such a small scale, going on my experience sculpting clay - but it turns out that greenstuff has a lot of advantages over clay at the smaller scale. It doesn't dry out and crumble like clay does when thin and it sticks to itself much more readily.
This standard bearer nearly went tits up when my drill bit broke off - it is still stuck there inside his hand. so I had to go round it and then rebuild his fingers with the green

If anyone has any thoughts or comments please post them as this helps me!

Post by: monkeytroll

Looks good weety, with your background in clay sculpting I have no doubt we'll son be seeing some lovely conversions from you. Only thing I can suggest is the handle on the standard needs to come up to meet the hand, the gap seems a little obvious at the moment, but then again pics do tend to make things like that stand out a bit more than they do in RL. Or at least that's what I tell myself everytime I look at pics of my stuff

I have to confess to having done the same thing with several drill bits now

Yay! Green Stuff in action! I like to see that it has been good to you the very first go.

I once was drilling a skeleton arm lengthwise, for pinning, and the bloody thing snapped... probably a good .375" in there. I had to drill an alternate hole just to the side, which worked out alright, but I know that feeling: drill, drill, drill...*snap*

Hahaha, yes it sucks, but you've gotta laugh. I probably should have waited till I get a vice. I was holding the mini between my knees and my hair kept getting trapped in the drill gears - recipe for disaster

Wow, the banner topper (skull with wings) and rope on his shoulder are awesome! The hand I'm not sure about, but there's a drill but stuck in there

"So, last night I was working on my toy soldiers and I got a really cool hole right through this one guy's hand. Oh, yeah and I managed to rip half my scalp off at the same time"

I was kinda hoping you weren't using a power drill to drill a model between your knees - ripped scalp and a bit of knee surgery at the same time - sort of like a combined hairdressers/operating table/modelling shop.Hmm, thoughts start wandering off back into orky territory....

Laugh! no I've got one of those ones were you turn a little handle and it connects via a gear to spin the drill bit - fairly non-lethal.

We had some funny inncidents in university though - something to do with having a bar on campus I think. One girl fell asleep on the band saw - just for a second. but only need a few stitches.

This old guy was polishing a block of glass on the flatbed sander and he dropped of for a second, releasing his grip on the glass and it flew across the room and smashed against the wall - lucky.

Me I just got a few minor lacerations due to my mistaken belief that broken plastic can't possibly be that sharp...

I knew a girl who was cutting something and wound up with an X-Acto planted .75" into her thigh.

My worst at art college was a palette knife that had been sharpened to an incredible razor edge by years of mixing pigments into oil mediums. I had no idea how sharp it had become, and whilst wiping it clean one day it sliced effortlessly through the cloth and through my thumb. Ugh.

I think the lesson in the last few posts here is: Be Careful!

Now let's see some more classic Rogue-Trady figgies!

ahhh the terracotta troll heads I assume. Well I can't make any more right now as I have no studio so you'd have to go with what I've got - I did make an absolutely massive one but Its now part of my dads rockery - makes a lovely garden ornament - better than gnomes.
The two I have, well I suppose I would ask for maybe 30 each or 55 for the pair? I like to get at least 10pound an hour for my work and I'm sure I put at least six hours in.
as for postage well, they are just under 1.5 kilos each, and I would want to use a lot of bubble wrap and a hard plastic box - so about 6 quid for postage

I would suggest that if you wanted to, unglazed ceramics takes acrylic paint rather well so you could even paint them

I count three chaplains on foot and one on a hoverbike. thats a lota chaplainly goodness - the flag is helpful - mine will be brighter but I like the idea of dogmatic psalm-like sayings in the flag. "the emporer is my shepherd" or "Thy prayers shall be as the firing of a bolter in the ear of the heretic" not great examples but it requires thought. It has to be very pious but ironic enough to make an atheist laugh...

Thankyou very much for posting it, please post others as and when they are appropriate. I think it is good for people coming to this thread who have no idea of RT to see the old art work and know where their hobby came from

cool, thats great to see those old chap's (pun)
the top strumps cards were great they had proper heavy metal painted stuff - A hell of a lot of it was chaos space marines and chaos mutant/beastmen. There were some space marines and just the odd smattering of imperial and eldar. The imperial guardsman was like the dummy card - you knew that he didn't stand a chance.
Those old chaos marines will always be my origianl favorites, but they are seriously expensive and I had succeeded in colecting four when I had a money crisis and had to sell them all

yup - and if they were really cheap then I guess I wouldn't be quite so proud of my collection (maybe they will become properly rare and expensive when I get old and I can line my nest egg with them)
But its only a matter of a few quid - you can get RT marines for 99p-1.99 but the chaos RT marines are more like 5.99 each or even more. So if I really wanted them I could dip into my savings - but that kind of attitude will leave me with no savings at all

GW have gone tits up since they took on the licence for Lotr and they are now stuck with a dead donkey untill the Hobbit is released in the cinema and that will die again in a couple of years.

As a result of buying that licence, and subsequently the game not doing even half as well as they'd hoped (cos it's glorified Yahtzee) they have had to cut the staffing levels in most of their branches and now are extremly short staffed.

Quest for Perfection, Crimson fists & Helbrute @ 2010/09/21 18:03:56

Yeah I've noticed this on ebay - they can try and sell Lotr figures till the cows come home but mos of the time no-ones bidding. I was vaguely tempted at first - maybe one day they will be rare collectors pieces, But I doubt it a bit - the thing is that someone somewhere will always be making Lotr minis so demand is always low - I remember the first ever minis I saw - prince albert minis, theyve been doing lotr since the early 80s and they still are doing it. I think their ones are betterer too

your moot sounds like a hoot... (sound of wind blowing across the plains).

I've been a bit lazy on the warhammer - but recently I find myself becoming a little obsessed, so perhaps a little break won't hurt. I see my friends and they say "so what have you ben up 2??" and all I have to say is - painting warhammer. Its not a bad thing to be a geek, but it helps to have other hobbies too. So you might have to wait a bit for that beautiful Inquisitor while I go for a nice long walk on the beach and through the woods, maybe get drunk in the local and just possibly do some highbrow art to put bread on the table. On the other hand I might do some conversions...

Getting a life seemed to work - went to an ann summers party! few glasses of wine and a whole lotta lingerie. But I couldn't help noticing how most girls didn't have paint under their fingernails - they had friggin manicures, and how the host's house was a spotless temple to orderliness and minimalism, boring sods. I think I'm better off being a geek, Its probably cheaper (cost of manicure 15quid average)

But it was nice to get out and have a laugh. Also making blackberry and sloe wine with some friends - got 6 gallons going!

quick update - chaplain has a flag - another "first in ten years" moment - I think I have improved.

Gosh, you're my kind of mini-restorer!

Let me ask a question: are you finding any signs of 'lead-rot' on the older minis? I think the mid eighties on are safe. I'm just curious as I don't really know what the metal recipe in old Citadels was (I wonder if anyone working there back then did, for that matter).

Hey, when that wine finishes fermenting, uh, send a snort over to the 'States, yeah? Hah! Sounds tasty.

haha yes i do enjoy a drink. Our government is forever trying to convince us not to enjoy drinking so much by hiking the price - this has lead to a massive resurgence in home-brewing! I want them to ban it altogether so I can become a bootlegger and make my mint.

No sign of any deterioration in the lead - aparently its caused by vinegar in the air?

"Acetic and some other acids, in the presence of carbon dioxide, catalyze with lead to produce lead acetate and lead hydroxide. Lead acetate and lead hydroxide together react with carbon dioxide and form lead carbonate. Lead carbonate then releases acetic acid and the process becomes self-sustaining" from www.dt.navy.mi

I don't understand why there would be vinegar in the air - but It is often associated with old wooden display cases - when the wood decays it must release the vinegar vapour into the stagnant air of the display case

First the anti-rave law, and now banning drinkees? Awful business it is. Reading your threads makes me ache for a pint. Or two.

The lead rot is more of a concern with figs from the late 70s on up to about 1981, and I tend to collect from that period at the moment. I have no idea how any of these oldies were stored so it's hit-or-miss when I buy them.
I tell you it's downright Nurgle-ish. I read a tale of a man who stored his figs in a wooden box, came back a few years later to find nothing but dust.

I do have some older Citadel minis but the metal content may be such that it is not effected.

"...Pint! Pint! Pint! Pint! Arrrrrrgrghhhhh!!!"

Haha. We all got real angry when they did the anti-rave law, but they never seem to inforce it at the little farm-raves I go to. I guess there just arn't enough people at these things for them to even know about it - The legal limit before a party turns into an illegal rave is 100 people and I there are usualy 50-150 people at the kind of things I go to. Good times

Good luck with the minis, I guess the best way to deal with it is to wash em well when you get them in detergent. and dry well.

Having your raves split up tends to depend on the local police - we've had small ones jumped on, and the Criminal Justice Act made it illegal to gather together to listen to 'repetitive beats' - 2 peeps if they were believed to be preparing a rave, 10 peeps if they were believed to be 'awaiting' a rave and a full-scale rave for 100+. Let's face it pretty soon it'll be illegal to do anything (unless you're a politico or a footballer), just pray they don't decide wargaming is teaching peeps violent behaviour

Think I managed to avoid switching into full-on rant mode there

edit: Oh yeah, mini's looking good there too

That last fig is awesome! He's got a great expression, these colors are really striking, this is going to be quite a collection.

Forget to say that I have a Citadel Grenadier 1982 D&D Lizardman (pre-slotta) base (it also appears to have a musket)...the metal on that is a sort of tarnished bronze colour. Actually its not...its more brown.

Anyway...I guess that could be to metal rot.

I think I might have taken that off my cousin when I was a child or something as I have no other D&D stuff (only paper cutouts and plastic).

Post by: weetyskemian44

Ahh now thats a good question - the space marines I could do with some feedIback on - originally they were 2 be the red star chapter - but I scrapped that idea when I changed their symbol away from a star - I think they are like space knights so something vaguely chivalric would be good.
emperors paladins?
Dark Knights?
Azure Crusaders?

The guard are sorta based on a description of tech-guard I read in a book - they have red armour, so hence why I was calling them mars regiment - but I need to find a tech priest, servitors and maybe do some bionic body parts before they really look like a tech guard

Seeing these classics so fresh and bright makes me well-happy. I particularly like the symbols, shin guards especially.

You folks from the other side of the world always seem to be up so late!

Manoknok: If you poke the dark areas of a figure afflicted with lead rot it will basically 'crumble' into dust and form a little cavity, it doesn't sound like that oldie has it, but you can poke at it to test it.

Ohh very cool mini and nice paint job, like the red and green goggles.

Think the retro mini's are popular for a few reasons. Obviously there's a nostalgia thing for some of us, there's the fact that retro is always cool for geeks , there's the collectible side of things, and then there's the fact that a lot of the older sculpts just have a lot of character, even if they're not always the best sculpt in the world.
Hmm, not the best phrasing in the world there, but in my defence I'm only just waking up

I haven't given up or anything - I've just been working - yes they finally gave me more hours again in my sh*tty job. I'm annoyed I don't remember asking for more hours - oh wait yeah I remember now - I moaned loads when they cut em. wata drag, ... anyone remember that lead zeppelin song "workin 7 till 11, drag drag drag" is the lyric

Anyway I will have an update for the squat pictured above in the near future - 2morrow if the sun will come up early enough. He will have red armour, he looks kinda like brian blessed in that programme ultimate banzooki

The fluff for my army is that they are an alliance of disparate forces on the edge of explored space - a band of space-marines and tech guard assigned to an inquisitor who have thrown their lot in with the local squat warlord to combat space pirates and eldar raiders

Automatically Appended Next Post:
They are low on vehicles because they travel on a small vessel and are low on space - maybe the squats will have some bikes if I can prise them away from all the other bidders on ebay. And squad sizes are a little irregular cos of casualties - Same reason they have a lot of characters (also I get fed up painting in batches after a while)

Brian blessed is all done and ready (but gotta wait for sunrise for a proper shot) - his beard is a bit whiter than it should be for proper blessed - but he is the current leader of the squats so I figure he needs the white beard as a badge of authority.

Never even heard of it ( I think I watched to much TV in my youth and I only watch it round friends these days ) but just looking at that shot makes me want to go find it on the interwebs. But not now, no, not now, must..go..workroom. Or actually just keep browsing dakka Just noticed the time, know I was working late again tonight ( I know where you're coming from in that respect) but it seems I've managed to compose 3, now 4 replies tonight, and done NOTHING else, not even get some food (I don't think the crisps and the chunk of cheese I bought home with me counts really).

And what sane person would be fond of a creature which naturally has more limbs than a tyranid? I don't think they're natural at all.

Now this thread has everything! even BRIAN BLESSED. So where are all the people?

Thought it might be something like that from the background. But let's face it the mud was half the fun in takeshi's castle And the other half was the paper sheets they had to jump through - oops, that one's wood! 'Course I was normally channel surfing whenever I came across it so they were probably the only bits I'd see

I'll make a note not to look at any squat bikes when I head over to e-bay for some bits ( quick mini related reference in a vain and blatant attempt to keep vaquely on topic )

edit: lol, nice, now it does indeed have everything you could possibly need - squats, chuck and BRIAN.

Rumours of a kiln and wheel going for free have been circulating and if I want them I better get off my but and find a studio. And If that turns out to be bullpoo I might do a night school ceramic class and just say to them not to bother teaching me, just let me sit in the corner with a big pile of clay

I have a new project - I cant seem to win myself a rogue trader dreadnought, and anyway I always thought they kindof sucked - so I'm going to be a little ambitious and make my own, combining my fav bits of the rt dread and the 2nd ed version. I have started with milliput for large parts and will finish up with green stuff for detail - which I hope will redeem this as its looking a little lame at the mo. Its going to be the lascannon / powerfist with twin bolters version. I'm considering making the lascannon a twin linked version but I am short on RT lascannons. Heres the work so far

I'm not sure whether he should be a tech-guard dread or space marine dread - Or even inquisotorial

I love the Dread so far! You're right: that original official GW Dread design was so awkward, yours has way more style!. Keep it going.

Cookies, huh? I love UK television. I just started on 'The Sandbaggers' 1978, Roy Marsden. Kind of like 'The Sweeney' without as much action.

Quest for Perfection, Crimson fists & Helbrute @ 2010/10/02 01:29:53

Post by: monkeytroll

Don't remember much of the sandbaggers, except it was kind of gritty, talky spy stuff, may have to look it up now I've been reminded of it. Obviously can recall Sweeney though, essential viewing when I was a lad - 'Get your trousers on, you're nicked', 'You're going down you slag'

Weety - you updating the legs a bit? I seem remember the original ones as a bit skinny, could have sworn I had one at some point but buggered if I know where it is now .
Think I may have a spare RT lascannon laying around somewhere if you want, I'll have a poke around - the plastic version I'm afraid Certainly got some of the space crusade marine ones, that might work as the upper cannon if you're doing an over/under style.
Looking forward to where you go with this anyway.

Quest for Perfection, Crimson fists & Helbrute @ 2010/10/02 10:11:22

Post by: weetyskemian44

Yeah I'm going for a sort of transitional dreadnought as I never liked the skinny legs and arms - it made them look a bit feeble. any heavy weps would be useful, I was thinking of doing an over-under type system!

I'm a bit worried aboot the powerfist and the feet - they will be buy far the most fiddly bits, I'm going to wait till monday when I have some 4 cm scenic bases arriving before I make the feet - I can make them in situ.

In all probability nothing will get done as a friend who likes drinking and watching films is coming over with a bottle or three. Good times

Just had a rootle and came up with these :

The old shoulder mounted lascannon is probably a bit weedy. The tarantula twin-las is only so-so, may not be what you're after. The Space Crusade lascannon would be good on top, depends on the other I suppose.

And these:

Space Crusade mounted twin las, might be okay, but I reckon the original Land Raider las-cannon might do the trick

If you're interested PM me your address and I'll send 'em off.

well Ive already incorporated one of the shoulder mounted RT ones so another of those is what I'm looking for - your right they are a bit small, but so is my dreadnought - Ithink I should have thought it through a little more. Body wise he is the same size as a terminator, but he will stand out a lot more due to large legs and arms. I seem to remember the old dreads being small so it probably doesnt matter. thanks a bunch!

here we go - I've got my new card reader

first things first - new squats with special weapons!

and heres a group shot of all my finished squats

Love my sqats - they are like 23 years old!!
And heres some WIPs of the dreadnought - not at all pleased with the power fist - going to redo that

As you can tell from the last pic with SM for scale my dread is a bit too small - thats what comes of not having a plan - but I learn from my mistakes

Finally I have decided my army is crying out for leadership so here is my captain, pinned and ready to paint - Inquisitor to follow shortly

Comments, hints tips and insults are all welcome

I like the Dread, it's got a nice stance and I think the scale is fine.

If you'd don't like the scale, maybe add a bit to the bottom of the feet to increase the height, and a bit in between the arms and torso, to widen it a little. Honestly I think it's a strong mini as-is.

Oh yeah, and that Terminator is such an awesome figure, the first time I saw a picture of that was the old Red-covered Citadel Painting Guide.
I wish I still had that, it had a great diorama pictures on the back, I think Mike McVey had built it.

Quest for Perfection, Crimson fists & Helbrute @ 2010/10/08 22:17:17

Post by: weetyskemian44

I think at this point I will keep the scale as is and maybe make a slightly bigger one with what I've learned. He is goin to have green stuff emblems on his legs and shoulders and an engine bit on his back, maybe a banner pole. I think the hard part now is getting his fist right - I really want to put twin bolters on it as thats what they used to have.

Hope I can do the terminator captain dude justice!

Squats looking great as always
Agree the dread should definitely have twin bolters and want to see what you do with the termie cap. I may even dig mine out and get him stripped - of course he'll then just sit around waiting for new paint for a few millennia
Hmm, okay, think I really need to go freshen up after my 23hour stocktake at work now as I'm just making comments on blogs with no useful stuff in

Oh, yeah got the red box fine, thanks a lot. Did you realise you left some terracotta stuff in there?

Wow, I love this trip down rogue trader lane, great stuff! Man I could use a couple of those old mkI landraider lascannons! Can't wait to see more!

Thanks heliodore, and don't worry I think this thread will be going for a while as I've got about a hundred unpainted old minis and I just cant seem to stop myself from buying more! If only I could paint as fast as I can shop.

Monkeytroll you just gave me my first chuckle of the morning. Dont worry about those old bits of clay in your nice shiny red box, If I were you I would chuck em in the lake...

I think I am getting a studio for ceramics soon - just need to shell out a bloody grand or so for a kiln and I will make more trolls - this time with arms legs and body and maybe genetalia

Oh and the postman just called - thankyou high-spec lenses LTD for your splenid lascannons! I wonder if they have tiny lenses in them - for focusing the laser-beam

everytime I type 'laser-beam' I have the urge to watch the austin powers trilogy again.

Take it that means the rumours of a free kiln/wheel were bullpoo after all then? Well, good luck on the studio front anyway.
Slaaneshi trolls then ?

Sorry no lenses in the cannons, you can probably see the holes where I ripped 'em out so as to re-fit one of the cyber-pike. Waste of time really, because when I threw one of those bits of clay overboard the stupid fish managed to get it's snout stuck in there. Now it's swimming around blindly bumping into boats.

Oh, and now I can focus again after a LONG shower, is that a nasty old mould line on that bolter wielding stunty?

Quest for Perfection, Crimson fists & Helbrute @ 2010/10/09 11:32:01

Post by: weetyskemian44

I got two free wheels but the kiln is a 2ton job that runs on gas and you whould need a small crane to shift it!! still - two wheels for free and maybe I can sell one to help buy a small kiln

It is defo a nasty mould lines but thats what I get for photoing right down the edge of it - Its too much hastle to remore it now - I might drill out the bolter barrel to make it look better though. got my tiny drilling set!

an old flame saw my minis the other day and said that I had gone all anal retentative on em and was that because I was getting competitive because of dakka! have to admit that he was right but I take it as a complement. theres nothing like a healthy mix of pride, jealousy and vanity to get me painting better. I already have sloth, greed and malice aplenty so thats all sins covered, I think its nearly time I went to the dark side and start painting chaos...

Quest for Perfection, Crimson fists & Helbrute @ 2010/10/09 13:16:45

Post by: monkeytroll

That makes six by the arithmetic I was taught, and I'm fairly sure I was also taught there were 7 sins Then again, reckon I've discovered a few that weren't mentioned, although if we're talking sloth I don't think your painting counts, several of your mini's seem to get painted in the time it takes me to decide a colour scheme. So far today I've managed a couple of small patches of red, a flesh wash and some black stockings and cap. And a few looks at dakka.

I was avoiding the temptation to mention drilling out the barrels

Thanks, when I get started I usually finish in the same day - but its just getting started thats the trouble - I've got the inquistor and the captain sitting here undercoated and with a thin wash of dark grey to bring out the detail and I just cant quite get off my ass to do anything else just yet. Maybe lunch first - going out for drinkys later so they might not get done

Damn whats that other sin - I could just google it but thats cheating... errrrrrm errrr, Lust thats the one - how could I forget.

lol, easy to forget that one

See, that's a sign from Slaanesh, you need to look at some of the old chaos mini's too Definitely a lot of character to some of those, and just as further temptation I may start on a couple and throw up some progress on my chaos thread later...

edit: Although that's definitely not a reason to forsake the squats

Quest for Perfection, Crimson fists & Helbrute @ 2010/10/09 14:28:42

Umm, of course, yes..yes..the umm, the chaos squats. No..no,no,no, of course I hadn't forgotten about them, how could I? Those were...ummm..the...err..the very thing I umm had in mind, yes obviously.

[casually walks off whistling]

And having said I'll do a bit of chaos stuff, I suppose I really should get off my backside and wander down to the workroom (sounds so much grander than room full of toy soldiers and assorted crap)

HAHA, and another one falls into the web of chaos.

Can't wait to see where you take them paint-wise, for some reason I can't help but envisage a real 'Blanchitsu' vibe coming from them.

Quest for Perfection, Crimson fists & Helbrute @ 2010/10/10 19:05:21

Post by: weetyskemian44

well having done a lot of research I would say blanchitsu would be great! if I can pull it off - I want bright colours and contrasts, detailed and bizarre freehand, and a slightly surreal feeling. Also I'm afraid that a uniform paint scheme is right out - which may make them look a bit incoherent, but that's cos they are incoherent - I'm fed up of churning out uniforms. Time for a bit of fun...

On a more boringly uniform note here is the first draft of my captain - he is by no means finished but its not looking to bad..

weetyskemian44 wrote: I want bright colours and contrasts, detailed and bizarre freehand, and a slightly surreal feeling.

Excellent, just what I was hoping for I think you can pull off that blanchitsu feeling, your minis already have an old-skool 'feel' to the paint which I think is sometimes lost when people are painting older figures. Your squats are excellent examples of this, they just ooze that original Rogue Trader vibe.

Cap's looking sweet so far, nothing boring about it, the Imperials go for that whole uniform thing after all Is that a resin base he's sitting on? Well standing on, but you get my drift.

Quest for Perfection, Crimson fists & Helbrute @ 2010/10/10 22:15:06

Post by: weetyskemian44

yep resin base from ebay - ruined city style - they are about 4 quid for 2.

I think half the reason my paint job looks retro is cos I still have the same paints I bought 20 years ago - they are getting a bit crusty now. still liquid though. But no seriously complement accepted - old school was what I was going for.

I've pinned together my first chaos warrior and given him a curvy knife from the night goblin sprue. he will be given a lick of paint real soon - I think I'm feelin like sky blue, fiery orange and a smattering of pale purple, with a lotta copper and gold. he is gona be one psychedelic marine

thanks pennywise and manokok, I really enjoy painting the squats too - they have a small surface area so I can paint three at a time!

I've been a bit lazy recently - what with work and friends. But I've made a start on the first chaos dude - he is a lovely shade of blue at the mo - and he will have a flaming orange border detail.

Glad to help tortured robot - I love my little nostalgia trip - its special to me.

I'm making a start on my first chaos marine, he is not as old as I would like, hes like 1995 I think, but he still fits in with the overall theme.

The yellow is going to be very carfully washed with red wash - don't want any overlaps with the blue - I want maximum contrast on the colors - his pipes will be dark green and his knee pads and gloves might be purple - not sure - might go for a natural horn color for the horns but I don't know - any thoughts or comments are welcome

Quest for Perfection, Crimson fists & Helbrute @ 2010/10/13 20:47:25

Post by: monkeytroll

Yep, you were right when you said you were going psychedelic Not sure if the green will work with the blue/purple/orangey thing, but will hold off judgement till you're done, I was looking at a few of my old chaos marines last night and they have a real mish-mash on them so can't really comment - I'll blame it on impetuous youth and strip 'em down. Horns might be good in a very dark red fading to bright red, probably best to wait till the rest is done though.

And suitably cunning, I hadn't twigged to your speed being down to the size of the minis

Be careful now! You're starting to slip into the territory where some of us have the models

I'm not sure I'm sold on the rainbow color scheme. If the colors aren't too drastically different, I think it could look really cool. But, you don't want it to slip into where he ends up looking like a clown.

Monkeytroll - saw the ogre with the mona lisa - amazing work and pretty bizare also! - If you can let me know roughly which WD he did his column in it might help - sometimes they come up on ebay for 99p a pop and I got a great one the other day with 1988 golden demon photos in it. actually that might be an idea - I should go visit the golden demon gallery website (unofficial). that always inspires me. I'm probably just having a mid-army crisis.

JB - Do it! you wont regret it. Its amazing how time flies isn't it! I don't feel that old - but my toys are from a different century.
I quite liked the old orks and I used to collect them the first time round but lost interest when they re-released orks for the third edition - they were just too mean looking and seemed to have lost that happy go-lucky approach they were famous for. Of course they were a great improvement on that horrible plastic goff ork that came with the game in 2nd edition!

Do you have any of the old metal freebooters? they were my personal favourites

Yeah, no problem I'll pull 'em out tonight and have a flick through them - it's been an age since I looked at them anyway.

The old orks were some of the ones I ignored back in the day, just had real issues painting orks back then - my adolescent mind just seemed to go 'they're orks they'd be badly painted' (I actually seemed to do more painting back then )
As a consequence I only picked up a few and now I've fallen in love with the greenskins (really shouldn't have taken me so long with their obvious conversion potential) I'm really regretting that fact.

There must be a great sense of retribution having finally got what you " lusted after "? for such a long time. your blog has a sacrosantic quality not found with the plethora of plastic (but nicely detailed) models about nowadays, not to get too nostalgic but even your background pics are retro! feel like i opened up issue 101 of wd (incidently first one i baught ) and you have the advantage of not having to go into your local gw which can get a tad irksome with the hard sell and all that jazz!

Well had a quick flick through some old WD's for you (can't resist those chewwies ) but didn't find as much JB mini's as I thought. The blanchitsu articles I came across were more him talking about various painting/modelling aspects with most of the pics showing other 'eavy metal artists. Guess that's the old rose-coloured specs entering into my nostalgia , I'll have a deeper delve over the weekend and see what I can find, may take some pics of some of the other stuff anyway, it's all good.

I'm very much a nocturnal animal, which really doesn't help as I'd much rather be going to bed a few hours before work insists I get up 4.30 seems a reasonable late nigt, certainly not a good time to be getting up.

Uh...no...my Orks are older than the freebooterss...think back to the very first Orks when the Rogue Trader rulebook was published. Yes, the ones with bolters, heavy bolters, and plasma guns. I have one of the boxed sets, an original Killer Kan like model, a dune buggy, and a lot of the two figure blister packs. I'll have to look at the The Stuff of Legends website to see which of the original Orks I'm missing. I'd like to have the full set from the first run.

I know the ones you mean. I love that stuffof legends site - its great for a browse through. just think how nice they would look with a nice new paintjob. looking at your gallery you have good skills.

Monkeytroll - thanks!! thats helpful - i love those pics. Looking at that i think I need deeper shadows and much paler highlights on my neon marine to tone him down a bit and give him some class and stop him glowing at me from across the room.

neil101 - yeah definitely. I actually hated the 80s while it was happening but then immediately got nostalgic for new romantic electro and fluorescent socks as soon as it was over...

Why stop him glowing? You know you did it as a subconscious reminder of those flourescent socks
Which I don't think you should be all that nostalgic for, electro - yes, new romantic - yes, mis-matched flourescent bobby sox - give that one a miss

Although to be fair the latter part of the 80's was just a mis-matched alcoholic blur to me

That WD101 is interesting. I have two of those figures (goblin archer and orc shaman). They are still part of my Orc and Goblin army for Warhammer. I mixed in my old, old Orcs and Gobbos with the newer variety. They actually blend in pretty well since I keep the Orc regiments separate.

I have a couple of old human minis too that are painted but they're not in that WD.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Weety, the Chaos Warrior looks good to me. A bit more exotic than the palatte that I normally use but then I tend to paint pretty mundane armies - Orcs, Orks, Cadians, and Ultramarines. I also overuse black, green, and blue. I probably need to try something new and experiment with some of the colors that you are using.

Have you ever read any non-GW painting guides? CMON has a decent one. I wonder if Reaper has any?

I have forced myself to be adventurous with colour and thats part of why I'm trying to paint slaneesh chaos at the mo as its such a bizzarely colourful army. There has been a lack of painting recently and I put that down to it being brass monkeys cold in my flat - I spend my evenings huddled in a duvet. Time to get the heating fixed - I do this every year I swear. But I got 2 chaos marines pinned, glued and undercoated this morning and I have two old-school traitor renegade marines and a possessed marine conversion arriving soon

Wow! Those are some classic pages! My first issue was way up at 136. It changed my whole attitude about role-playing and minis.

It's getting colder here too but not like you have it over there.

I've never painted any chaos marines. Back when Rogue Trader and Marauder Minis were the norm, my friends and I divided the various army types. I got Orcs and Orks so that's why I have a lot of those old minis. The chap that got Chaos...hmm...I don't think he finished many and he doesn't collect them now either. I think I have one old Chaos marine with a plasma gun lurking about but he's not painted. I don't think he has a backpack either. He's probably a 1990s figure. I looked him up on Stuff of Legends but I don't think he was on there. A variant like him was there though. Perhaps GW had variant heads. They did that on models back then.

He is a mutant Iron Claw space pirate! http://www.solegends.com/ironclaw/ic301spacepirates.htm
His name is ooglorg the cruel. I've go a few others of these guys - they are pretty bog standard sculpts but full of individuality.

i used to have on of those space pirates , painted him all gold lol even his gun, your right about quality and character though , i think every model in your collection was an individual back then , i suppose thats one of the reasons the plastic conversion kits are so popular. everybody wants to be unique , nice tidy little warband you have there!

Thankyou Ambull!! I'm glad your enthusiastic about it. I shall bring back the old school.
So to start I've got another necromunda cultist dude - note the tiny slaneesh symbol. He has a pink rubber trenchcoat - which is the best look this season for slaneesh cultists

Then there is that standard bearer I converted with the GS. I wouldnt mind feedback on what kinda flag I should do - any links or anything to flags you have liked. The regiment is meant to be some kinda martian tech-guard unit - they are going to have some servitors and techpriests soon

These guys are an Iron claw pirate and a mercenary who I think might be a counterfeit as the slotta is completly blank

I like the pink coat a lot, in general I always thought the Necromunda stuff really cold have gone places, now that the early 90s seem like an eternity ago it makes me ache for that short-lived cyberpunk style.

I love a bit of cyberpunk. necromunda is on my list of thinks to obsessively collect - but they sure are pricey these days. Got the rest of the metal goliaths arriving soon. do some conversions maybs.

thanks
I decided that as mercenaries they would have picked up armour here and there with different shapes and color schemes, and probably decorated their own - but I'm trying to throw a few reacuring themes in such as go faster stripes and stars (which incidently gives them a slightly confederate/rebel/biker pirate look). I'm not sure about the guy at the back who looks a bit like a cop - think I might strip him and give him more of a biker feel

I've decide to paint 6 squats at once instead of three so I might not be finished till this evening or tommorow morning

Jive and rehabilitation - they kind of resemble drive and ambition, well, if you squint a bit..through a mirror..in a darkened room.

I like to think I could get a figure done in six nights - don't believe it's true, but like to think it anyway

But you do need to find a little of that drive and ambition to sort your studio out, have you tried looking behind the sofa, stuff always accumulates there.

Quest for Perfection, Crimson fists & Helbrute @ 2010/10/27 18:14:54

Post by: weetyskemian44

Yes - I've been thinking just that; Not much point paying for a studio if i cant even speed paint six tiny squats - But in fact I have nearly finished.
I dont have a sofa I have a sofa bed - I will try looking under it. In fact I know whats down there - glaze chemicals, clay tools and a 5 kilo block of well wrapped clay!
so its all good, I just need to convince people with money that they want to own my sculpture/garden ornaments.

Ok, I can't deny that a squat's shoulder is a good home for a RT lascannon And I'm certainly not one for insisting one model gets done before another This does however mean I expect to be impressed when you get back to the dread, and doubly impressed when I see whatever you come up with for that double-las

Finished shorties look good as expected, love the goggles on the las-maniac. On the guy flipping his visor(the one with the bent las ) did you add a wash to the gun, or is that due to the lighting?

Quest for Perfection, Crimson fists & Helbrute @ 2010/10/28 18:20:38

Post by: weetyskemian44

oh yes - multiple washes on all metals, and it does seem to stand out on that particular gun - I think it looks good, makes the gun look slighty oily, like he has been polishing it with gun oil. His lasgun is a tiny bit out of wack isn't it. I suppose considering they've been posted in flimsy bubble envelopes it could be much worse

Yeah. looks good, I like it, just wasn't sure if it was down to some dodgy yellow house-lamp as it stood out particularly on the centre figures.

These models are cool, btw.

My question is about the older marines in the very first forum post. That green.... how did you make it? It looks lighter than straight-up dark angels green.

Quest for Perfection, Crimson fists & Helbrute @ 2010/10/28 20:04:41

Post by: weetyskemian44

Ah well Nu11nVO1D thats some real dirt cheap painters acrylic called 'Anita's All Purpose Acrylic' and its No. 11047 dusty grey. I found it kicking about and though it was a great colour.
Its shaded with armour wash and then highlighted with more dusty grey. I think it would be difficult to get it that colour with citadel range. you would have to experiment. You need a green thats verging on being aquamarine and then just add a bit of very light grey.
It seems to work pretty well although its not quite as smooth as model paint should be

monkeytroll I cant rule out crappy light being involved in the color but I try and get it fairly right by photographing in daylight. But there is less and less of it at the mo.

the look really nice especially the sqaut with peg leg's helmet.
the metal looks i don't know mottled and old. the colour scheme of blue and green is different, i personally think that grass green colour is underused in the grimdark 40k unvierse in general. although i was expecting slanesh pinks and tezentch purples for your shorties, maybe thats for the chaos squats?, as usual i am astounded at the painting qaulity and originality in these blogs. and all that from under a duvet in a poorly lit flat ;-)

Quest for Perfection, Crimson fists & Helbrute @ 2010/10/28 21:26:25

Post by: weetyskemian44

I think its best to save pink and purple for slaneesh - and maybe eldar (the 'kinky' races). I picture squats as being quite conservative in the use of color, they are like mechanics and miners and other macho engine grease covered sweaty occupations. but that certainly doesn't apply to chaos squats.

does anyone know of a good varnish spray to give these guys a protective coat?

Another classic mini, another nice paint-job

On the spray varnish front, tbh I've not really come across any favourites, used a variety over the years and still do, never had any issues with the GW stuff except the price At the moment I'm using Humbrol Gloss and i-kore matt, but they just happen to be what I had in my spray box.

edit: Actually I've just noticed that the last batch didn't get very good coverage from the matt. And I've just broken one of them which isn't really down to i-kore I suppose, but I'll blame them anyway

fair enough - so what your saying is that it dont really matter. I like that! saves worry. I do worry of course as I saw major toms thread where his space hulk terminators got frosted and mottled when he spray varnished them. but I think that had more to do with ambient temperature and humidity than the brand of spray.

Anyone wanting beastmen with guns should check out this link - they are cheap and cheerful but they dont have any close combat weapon choices unfortunately. I'm going to buy some thats for sure http://www.em4miniatures.com/acatalog/Beastmen.html

I was very lazy today - only one mini painted in a day where I really wasn't doing anything else apart from watching films. But in my defense I was out clubbing in Newquay last night at the 'alternative beauty awards' which was great but my friends didn't win unfortunately. She did a great burlesque striptease but instead some skinny pale chick who wasn't all that great at singing won. Rigged I say!

Also saw an awsome black metal band called ABGOTT - they looked like some kinda evil undead goblins. thats what I call stage presence.

The bright neat colour schemes are really doing great justice to these old gems Weety. I check this blog whenever I want to see something colourful and entertaining

The old eavy metal guide you were linked previously is amazing. Perhaps one day with practice, we can all reach the levels of painting mastery required to actually get these expressions onto miniatures.

Well, it's probably worth bearing in mind that in the last few years I've actually got round to sealing very, very few minis. And note the edit to my previous I still worry slightly when it comes to sealing as I had a bad experience years ago, due almost soley to me, but still preys on my mind. Also bear in mind that some of the cheap'n'nasty arts&craft type varnishes can have slightly dodgy coverage..hmm, maybe you should just completely disregard my previous post and wait for some better informed opinions

Post by: weetyskemian44

Thanks Ifalna! I do try and get a bit of colour in! And I think a finer brush is needed before expressions can be had- just out of interest what kind of brush do you use? I get cheap ones from the local cash and carry but I'm buying an army-painter insane detail brush as the cheap ones seem to get bent over at the end after a little use.

Monkeytroll I will wait for more advice - perhaps I can find some suggestions in the tutorials section. I have never sealed anything ever - and as I dont play anymore its certainly not urgent.

I use pro arte size 0 to 10 zero, mostly as they hold point well and have really comfy handles. I also use winsor and newton Sceptre Gold II as they are a sable mix, but I want to move to full sable soon. Expensive, but they hold more paint and seem to not curve as easily :(

10 zero? What is that, 2 hairs? Don't think I've ever owned anything more than 0000, didn't even realise they went to 10

It pretty much is, except it doesn't bend the way trimming a brush to a few hairs usually would I rarely use it, I am afraid it will get ruined so I keep it for crazy detail work.

I will get a shot when I get home tonight, basically just an absolutely tiny kneedle point brush.

Do they sell Testors Dullcote in England? It's the only matte spray that I use. I will occasionally use a gloss coat first for better protection. Then I'll spray over that with the dullcote. If something small needs to be shiny, I'll touch it up with a liquid gloss coat.

I should point out that most of my 40K IG figures aren't finished. I always want to add more details but I never seem to get around to finishing up all the things I wanted to add. It doesn't stop me from pushing them around a tabletop.

My fantasy Orc and Gobbo army is all spray coated because I was using them a lot and didn't want their paint to rub off. I still need to go back and add some liquid gloss coat on them though.

The finishing issue is a problem for me. Because I dont play with the models I feel like I should go back to them and add extra highlights and details before I bother to varnish them.

What varnish to use seems to be a contentious issue on P&M forums. Dullcote gets a lot of good feedback but I will have to pay extra to have it posted from America.

That RT tech priest in the link, I have thrown big money at him and fingers crossed he is mine. I won a different RT-Tech priest yesterday and it cost me 6 squid. They are obviously a rare catch - so anyways soon I will have tech priests.

Manoknok - on the subject of painting - Especially skin bit often for other areas I do try and give several thinner coats. How i do it at the mo is I start with a white undercoated model and hit it with some slightly watered down black wash to give a grey tone and pick out the shadows. But you could just as well paint it black or grey. Then I just get a tiny bit of flesh color on the brush and spread a thin coat all over. You dont want to much paint on the brush so wipe a bit off and spread what you've got left as widely as poss. You will keep running out of paint on the brush and having to get more, wipe some off and so on so its a slightly tedious way to paint but thats the way I do it (it might help to water down the paint just slightly - but on the other hand you dont want it too watery or it will spread like a wash and you dont want that) then once that is done you add another layer, slightly thicker but ignoring shaded areas, then another coat on the more raised areas. Then wash (Im using browny yellow skin wash sometimes with a little red), then highlight just the bits like nose, chin, cheekbones and the front of the forehead
