i finally choose to postpone a further work on my airship to paint again some minis.
subject is a little cadian mini that will mark the backbone of my upcomming steampunkish Praetorian army with lots of multiculural influences of different armies from the widespread empire of queen victoria...
the army concept is a bit like the roman empire where celtic and nubian and roman warriors fought side by side... so there will be jungle fighters fighting alsongside mordians and praetorians and other exotic fighters in that big army...
as a starter i am working on a suitable paintscheme that will tie all further minis regardless of their origin...
firstly i want to show you the first batch of minis that i will work with ...
these will serve as stormtroopers...and lots of brass will be used here...
these will be my backbone troops, evertrusting and shooty as hell...or hell in form of a commissar will get them...
captain Reed of the Royal Queens Brigande reported lastly for duty in Her majesty´s army and will be a big leader here...
andto get a more steampunkish air about the army this little fella will provide so almost unconvertedly...^^
so now to the maineven, as i present the for now paintscheme...
i painted the shoulders and the helmet white, boots and belt in black and the uniform clothes will be red...
now the tricky part is for me to determine what color should i do the carpace in? white might be the default chioce here but i am rather open wide for suggstions here as i am not really sure about that...really please lend a hand here, it is much apreciated...
the weapon is a mixture of black and metalic and i am rather unsure of that too...
Yay new work! This looks interesting vik , the red is great is it red gore ? very neat work so far , and the white is crisp too !
I suggest codex grey or brass, maybe a nice snake bite leather , though simple white is always effective! looking forward to more !
codex grey or brass or even snake bite leather .... never had i thought in that direction....well tahts the input i was searching for...cool i will do some on paper tries and will let you know...
the red is just blood red, some layers... and the white was rather done well for the grey primer underneath... really helps a lot...
don´t tempt me man...we´re on a tight budget here^^
seems also i have to seriously invest in some paints now...
as i recall i dont have any codex grey and snakebite leather...
only bestial brown and that brownish lighter foundation, forgott the name... damn airship and modeling forgott so much about painting in the process...
If you want to make them look supplied cheaply by mass production and low visibility in spite of red cloth(Which can mess up the eye) Then codex gray, otherwise, for a more showy army, brass up that armor! Show pride in the colors!
my wife suggested maybe go with a more traditional look and get the trousers look more white/creamy...the brass for the carpace?...well i probably will do a test mini for that as i will be very interested how this might work out...
there will be only some camo...i dont know what and how for the snipers in the army...for the rest although i wont feel restricted to use only praetorian minis i will stick to a very old fashion british look...as much as possible with about a hundred catachans in the fold now^^
i think if at all possible it will be a stretcher between cheap massproduction and showy colors...so it will be kind a massproduced pride then^^ (in germany toilets are numbered PPlol...boltfire...)
well i have done some new testing on the poor cadian trooper...he will need a name too as one to be subject to such horrible colors should have mourning personality...go figure^^
well at first i made a decission and painted the carpace and the helmet in vermin fur ...for my part this doesn´t work one minute as the brown blends with the red so well you think you have all in all a muddy red over the whole mini... so i needed to fix that...
by the way i redid the trousers too from blood red to deneb stone in one go...unwashed for now...
then i wanted to give brass a go over the brown but had to find out that my brass color dried up totally in the time since its last use... and i made quite a mess on my workspace trying to recover it....talk about handywork talent or rather absent of said talent...
well then i went to plan B and added burnished gold for testing and i think that didn´t went to well on brown, as it didn´t create a very recognizable effect... but i didn´t let that stop me, now did it?
so i then added a small amount of my favorite wash, flesh wash to the helmet and carpace but i think to rather no avail...
see for yourself:
well just as i had touched up the last bit of the wash on the mini the dorr bell ang and i went for the door to receive these new fellas to serve for the ole queeny...:
well these inis will make do as a sentinel squad of now five minis. the red and metal one i had for quite a time now and wanted it to add as a dreadnought for my sons army but now it will be enlisted in the victorian army...as a sentinel... oh how the mighty have fallen...^^
some of the soon to be sentinels have either GW weaponry now or rather no at all, but i guess i will find suitable ones in my bitsbox...
any help from you regarding my paintscheme is as ususal greatly apreciated and needed^^
that stung man^^ i will see to it that i get around buying some brass reall soon...darn when paint dries...do you think a more metal/steel carpace would look good? i could do a test painting on that, heck i will do so aspa^^ talked me into it^^
Sorry Vik, that wasn't meant to sting, the look of the armor was looking rather like my rusty treads on the Akuyaku is all. But try a steel look as well, very European. ^^
i am by far struck only feel the guilt of having done a bad job, so no offence taken here^^
Automatically Appended Next Post: So i went on with the painting with "dun it duncan"...
now i went for a more darker scheme alltogether and made a few needed touchups of red with mecharite red instead of blood red...this gives the whole mini another mood altogether...
also i did the capace and helmet firstly black and then steely and then again went over the steely bits with flesh wash to create a somewhat brassy effect...
hope it shows now...
also i washed the trousers with ogryn fleshwash and the white face too... so the trousers then received a rather heavy drybrush of undiluted white and where washed alter with fogryn wash again...also i couldn´t help but did the base too as i saw i reached quite a good level with the mini real soon...well there will be some work still on the mini but in concerns for the overall paintscheme i think i was kind of satisfied for now...
do you mind? do you think its not suitable? then tell me^^ as i would gladly do another testing before i go into large massproduction^^
the base of course will get a bit of a wash too and thus a bit of grittier look then...
well i got some of them from a former firiend of mine who bought them in their time of release... also i recently bought a truckload of paints from a local art shop off real cheap as they didn´t understood then what treasure the just wanted to get rid off...some people...*shakes head sadly...*
well the shoulderpads are off white with a bit of badabblack wash over them to make them look a bit tusseld/used...
ups just realised you eant the cuffs^^ silly me^^
they are intend to be bright white as they try to give the "i-starched-my-shirt-so-hard-its-now-got-a-cutting-edge" -style...
so they will stay that way... it was an attempt to givbe this mini a bit of a posh look....something not done lightly in a war-related eviroment^^...
would a cigarrrrr do? i mean i will be doing usakar creed for a suitable comannder of the fleet so he comes with a built on cigar...enough? and comes time and money i will be getting that general drake from reaper
and he too has a cigar....never did work with Gs tho i dont know if i am capable to sculpt a pipe...^^
Viktor von Domm wrote:would a cigarrrrr do? i mean i will be doing usakar creed for a suitable comannder of the fleet so he comes with a built on cigar...enough? and comes time and money i will be getting that general drake from reaper

^him...with a pipe!
I am looking for either:
-a monocle
-a pipe
-a blunderbuss
-a moustache
if it doesn't have one of these I will cry.
ah now this is a bit of a cliche`for a fourteen something kid...a girly kid at that...
so soldier wipe of that grime in your face and get a pair...
hmmm actually the commissar drake as shown above could indeed be sculpted with a pipe...hmmmmm and i guess a mnocle on fatty creed is also not out of the question....well i also happen to have him and he comes with a monocle up front so i got one out of the first to do tasks^^
phew.....
Automatically Appended Next Post: how about if i sculpt him with an eye patch instead as an homage to the true nick fury of S.H.I.E.L.D?
would´t that be even cooler than having him a pipe?
-I'm not girly! I prefer "having feminine qualities"^^
-I saw this somewhere...forgot what site describing creed- "and a collar so huge it blocks his peripheral vision" ^^
-eyepatch would be cool.
So how many commanders do you have? creed, the monocle guy, and the eyepatch guy?
commander reed, former praetorian footlogger now airship companyleader,
when done he will be the first true praetorian in this army...hopefully tehre will be more of them one day...
need to rob a bank probably...
nah....he is more of the dashing type...but i promise there will be a guy with schnautzer, monocle and pipe and possible a wooden pegged leg...satisfied?
well maybe i will stuff the idea with the leg...^^
so will you comment on the paintjop ORRR WHAT???
vik
by the way your avatar pic is creepying the feth outa me...
ächem...if you got more than one monocle its called glasses...and i think it is reaching ridiculous amounts if you have more than two, cause last i checked most people have two eyes and not one that i know of has more than two...
well its my duty as mature grwon up to point that out in case the youth of today gets some funny ideas of life on plant earth...
to all, please have a closer look on the tummy of the commander, for now it is red but i am very unsure about that...something tells me there should be another color but its not telling be which....
and shaso, thanks for the comment on the brass armor ... i found out about the wash metalic mix with my earthangles and ever sice used this methode... one day my suply of flesh wash will be depleted and then i will be in deep trouble...
looks good, I thought you meant the OOP metal pretorians
and do you find the old bottles a hassle to open, I got a load of then recently and ended up with a painty streak across my face
also your army must have the maximum amount of: monocles, pith helmets, pimp canes (for lack of a better word), and pipes/cigars, also Coats hanging off sholders, because hats and coats denote rank in the absence of pauldrons.
the old bottles i open up by popping them with an old cloth peg and like someone lese would do with a bottle of beer...its rather simple but i had to endure lots of pain to get there... once i nearly peeled my thumbskin ...not funny really...during that time i was really painting addicted...
i saw an old bit at ebay with a sergant cane... thats something i will be getting to buy and for a nice conversion...
as for pith helmets, well i ordered the soupplate hemlmet of secrets of the third reich seperate heads system and these have gasmasks you will be seeing in the future of this blog.... i havent had the oportunity to order the pith hats then... so for now soup plates first... but this is an army with quite a large amount of planned men under weapons so there is still enough room for more pith hats here...
vik
i have based an entire squad of 11 Cadians to be fighting in a muddy scenery...
then i worked on a scout to go as stormtrooper but i am not sure so i will post tomorrow...
then i worked with some warzone minis i also want to use in the army. purpose has yet to determined, for now they count as german conscripts depending which heads they will get.,.
if these:
then they will stay german fighters in victorian service
if these:
then they will be regular british soldiers in service of the victorian army...
either way their behinds belong to the queeny...
the concept behind the army is that lots of diferent cultures just like the tau got swept up in the victorian army and serve therin but retain a certain style from ther way back former courty associated army...so germans with the pickelhaube, maybe australien catachans, mordian soviets?, praetorian brits and fantasy imperials as french/italien mix? and all other i can get a hold of...
so again i would like you all to post some comments as to what i could do...paintwise and modeling wise....
also i raise now an open question to you all:
i´ve got
4 mortars,
4 autocanons
3 lascanons
3 heavy bolters...
which would be the best to get them crews and then based?
what works best what looks in your opinion the best?
and another question too:
how many minis to go for a normal IG footslogger unit? what about special weapons inside these platoons...is there every time a comspecialist needed? where should the standard bearer be? medics where, snipers where? and i ghave some panzerschreck kind of weaponry in the heavy weaponsprue as well, wher to be used???
help me as i am not really able to answer these questions myself...
thanks in advance
vik
Automatically Appended Next Post: by the way, yes FITZZ we talked about the pith helmets by secret weapons... i like them so much but i got hold of the soupplate helmets for now and i fear i will use them at least on the catachans i have...

Vox-casts are useful- every squad.
10 IG per unit.
standard bearer: I don't use 'em.
IMO mortars are more fluffy (I can imagine steampunk mortars really vividly), but I prefer heavy bolters. That AP4 is pretty useful against anything but MEQ.
hmm no prob there as i have lots of bits with com packpacks and and enough of these special helmets for the com heinis...
so ten only? why not more? could you explain that a bit more?
iwll probably doing anyway mostly mortars as i can use them on a slota base^^ and the rest of the weaponry could be used for vehicles then....
be sure of taht perkustin and thanks for the nice comment on the first done cadian, he really grows on me^^
first thing is expect a full 10 men squad with vox and sarge for these first batch of soldiers for the cause...
i hope tomorrow i will begin with batchpainteing them...
oh i am very alergic to timetables and schedules...thats why i probably quit WOW and wont get into work easyly...
if anything gets to look like work i am quite lazy... i i get sort of aroused by a project i need no food nor sleep...
its the cause that has to get me...
so i cant answer your q shrike...
only that i hope we all enjoy the ride...however long it might gonna take us...
ah now i get your comment about the hannoverian minis from perry...well your right prussian would seem a good choice...
about the airship...really its a schedule thing, one day i want to play, the airship as of now keeps me longer from playing so i do army now and airship later...
and by the way one day i havbe to seriously think about what tanks to give these wild bunch of men...
Man i turn away for a second and what do i miss , arhh!
Well The cadian looks good , the camo chest plate aspecially at the back looks very good, i dont like his base though a bit too green and brown at the moment , maybe a wash for it?,
and i too hoped for a bit more brassy old style look , but the colour choice is very well implemented, so congrats matey.
So captain Reed looks very dashing and handsome , i bet he is noble, brave proud and good with the ladies no doubt! lol whilst still retaining his humble roots. i can't complain about his paintjob , you did the pretorian proud !
Wow bloody great sentinels mate , the look the dogs as we say over here! your army is shaping up to be a force to be reckoned with.
and last but by no means least the german and british warzone figs look spectacularly good and so perfect for your force , really excited to see them painted up.
just one question , wheres the cheap aresed skin flint vik gone ? these babies must have cost an arm an a leg , and another arm! lol
well on my sins i might have lived a bit more out of my wifes wallet then i should have done so, but all in all the cheap vik is up and about^^
so your post showed me i didn´t updated the lil cadian anymore...his base looks in my opinion way better now as there is no green left^^ and i matched after this image 10 more of these bases, so there will be 11 gueardsmen to be made...
the warzone minis will either be germans or britisch with soupplate helmets, so what should i be using for heads, could go either way? got a squad of ten wazone minis and a for now looking like an executing commissar... will post pics later as the akku is empty so no pics now but expect the worst^^
about the sentinels i am rather proud, big bargain and i can upgrade them as i want as some of them are as yet not with weaponry equiped...
in my last update i asked about some questions , could some of you fair people out there take the time to answer them for me and my army?:
also i raise now an open question to you all:
i´ve got
4 mortars,

so i promised a picture update and here it is now, note the shoulderpads where i tried a bit of freehand tehre, nothing special as i haven´t got the knack of designing one of my own...for now...its just a roman 1 and a styliezed "V" on the other...
base is now completly covered in vermin brown all over the static grass too and then washed flesh wash and babdablack any old how...
so here are the pics...:
i am currently in process of aplying basecoats to the current batch of minis to complete the first infantry squad...10 men including sarge...one comlink and for now no special weapons...maybe later...
so please take me to the cleaner with your comments^^
good job. Gotcha! seriously nice work. Can't wait to see thse fine chaps on board the airship- got a name for it yet? Victoria? Victorius? Ol' bessy? BTW pics by tomorrow- my mum's got the camera and gone out. And army lists posted in my article.
lol, seems not only mods i can escape but negative critizism as well^^ well all well that ends well^^
saw your update will post asap^^
and i should do a seriously thinkingtime for the name of the airship...would be also easier to write than all the time airship...airship...airship... pretty anoying and could be a whole lot faster with simply "Bessy" but thats sounding a bit like an old cow...
He looks top notch Vik , i love that your ship is getting some infantry now , are we going to see the snipers in this blog as well ,i loved those guys!
Looking grand Vik
Have you decided on schemes for the German Conscript and Tommy Aitkins yet?
I see the Former in typical Prussian Blue from the Franco-Prussian War era.
i guess so, are you ferening to the musketteers sniper of fantasy warhammer? will take probably longer till they´ll be shown here but in due time of course^^
thanks man i only hope i can keep the level of "duncan" to paint the others too...
is it better to paint color ater color or each mini after another?
guardsmen- batch paint. It's the only way to do it and remain sane. I did tyranids, orks and imperial guard. trust me.
BTW anyone know of a good UK spray gun, or a foreign one with cheap P&P?
???? whats that matey?^^ speach lack of vocabluary on my part...
and blue is forbidden on behlaf of queen declaration...so no royal blue anymore in victorian empire...she is a wife in mourning and lets the whole empire mourn her husband and king for the last 40 something thousand years or so....
i guess the old assmbley line is still the best for quick and effectiviness but the burnout is that way also far easier to get too...but when your right your right as they say...
vik
Automatically Appended Next Post: the airship loks good, where did you find it? funny as i havent pictured a paintjob for my mega build yet....
care to share a link where you found it FM nInja?
The British nickname of Tommies came from the First World War. Army Instructions on how to do certain things used a sort of everyman name, "Tommy Atkins". Seems that the origins were much earlier
The Prussian Blue is not the same as Royal Blue, Vik. It was much darker, more Navy Blue.
Automatically Appended Next Post: yikes sorry everyone didn't think the pic was going to be so BIIG!
lol... well i know that shade of blue too, but as they look good the quirk of the army is the rule surpreme of queen victoria mourning her husbands early death and that she shows by completly banning the blue...this gives everything a lack on the colorpalette andthus making all a bit more grim...it was at first a rather hazy thought too quickly mentioned but i lkie the absence of a whole color in a society more and more...
sounds ridiculous but i think in the 40k universe far worse atrocities had happend...^^
and as "scheidige" unifoms goes the prussian ones are side by side with the redcoats^^.. the rest is sloppily excuses of a picture of a soldier...^^
am off for now as i need some sleeeeeeeeeeeeeeppkdgfdhjl....
*I would type waves here but I'm too tireeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee- sorry, dozed off for a minute thereeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee- you get the idea. ^^
Nice big picture chibi , very cool , , but whats the guy with the bottle doing... he looks like one of those guys who hijack tv reports in the background of football matchs and the like. lol
Was a suggestion for Herr Pickelhaube.
Sorry if I missed something along the way Vik
Struggling with concentration lately
Mourning weeds sounds interesting, especially in a universe of universal suffering as you say.
Sort of suggests Her Madge has slightly gone off the rails!
Adds a bit of background imho
Chibi Bodge-Battle wrote:Sort of suggests Her Madge has slightly gone off the rails!
she's starting to sound more and more like "queenie" from blackadder...
in a good way...
Q- "FIGHT! FOR ME AND COUNTRY!!!"
"I F***ING LOVE YOU..."
Q- "OFF WITH HIS HEAD!!!"
yep thats how i imagine her...short temper, and the comment from alice in wonderland is a real good one i think i will use that as a standing procedure of execution by commissars during battle...
"the queen commands me to.....OFFFFFF yer head....now charge you cowards..."
I think in the new alice in wonderland film, they based the quenn of hearts a lot on queenie from blackadder. She bellowed "OFF WITH HIS HEAD!!!" at every opportunity.
thanks shattered soul, i loosed today as i wanted to give you some daylight pics of my first model to update the very bad ones from last update... but i had lots of familytime today and didn´t come around to do them so...
BUT!....
postman brought 12 mint mordians to me and they got instantly sprayed in grey primer and although its not related to this blog i sprayed a whole bunch of minis SM for my son to be made for his iron templar chapter... will post pics of these and a very nice version on how to prime minis a twisted way tomorrow, so stay tuned fellas...
at shrike, well thats her main sentence...and a good one at that...cant get wrong with that one as otherwise....YOOUR HEEEAAADDDD IISSSSS OFFFFFFF! fer sure...
well queeny would be some kind of capital offence otr even treason dont you think so? although the troops in their barracks would call her that way very likely...
so again its update time here on my lil blog o steampunkish/modern praetorians...
so first i want to show you some better pics of my first cadian ...his name stays with duncan, he got some few touchups and then i took some daylight pics as lots of contrast and color gets lost by artificial light as of last time...:
and then i want you to show some of the things to come into the future...
a batch of mordians...
mixed groupshot of catachans (metal) commissar and a female ghost, and a vostroyan one...
some ten cadians for further fleshing out the army...note the kneeling sargent one of my first new converted soldiers, i had this vision with him kneeling on the ground and commanding his fellow soldiers to charge...maybe he would be good on the trenches?
a closeup of him^^, as i really like him, probably will do him way earlier as planned to have him watch my desk^^
and then i started to convert some shotguns for the use on veteran soldiers ...after a lenghty helpfull pm session with perkustin...thanks man for your insights^^
this is made after your inspiration!
basically a heavy flamer IG arm with some bits of (dark) elven quivers for shotgun mags...
and although it is not really Praetorians related but shows a god and helpful technique of quick and easy spray priming i want you to show how i primed the next batch of iron templars for my sons army...
basically used binders for cables to strap the minis to a rod of plastic (any other rod would to as well) and then spraeyed them...the thing is due to the binders the minis stay upright and wont fall around and i really like that for unbased minis....as these will get lavabases as the rest of them already got...
so would be nice to read your comments here, see ya, vik
cause of natural death : either boltround through skull by commissar, nidsclaws, friendly SM fire (lol double pun)and oh so much more...
sometimes i think, are there enough cadian males around to mate so that humanity strifes on?
Wow your Ig guys and mordians are fething A ! And your converted captain looks the bees knees, I thought you said you didnt work weekends ? looking forward to seeing these mean sons o biatches painted Vikky!
mean sons, now thats a good name that inspires some images...will remeber that one...
well it was a non secure time...could be over anyminiute so you make due with what you can...which was rather a lot...^^
well the priming was done yesterday anyway^^ but well...^^^
what do you think about my shotgun version? convincable?
i probably get enough together for seven and then some flamers as you suggested... i need to buy some fresh cadian bodies though as all my minis are prebuilt when i bought them so no virgin ones left^^... but i will probably order them via ebay in the next week or so...
gosh there will be so many minis...
concerning the comand squad, how big can i blow it up or is the 4 +1 iron and cant be enlarged? i wanted to use the mordians for that psecific use... they are 12 minis and wouoldn´t make any sense in another squad then...
Shotguns look aces Vik,I did something similar to make mine.
As far as Command squads 4+1 (advisers not included) is the rule AFAIK.
Looking good so far Vik,definitely keeping up with this one.
your absolutley right, lots of flashes or mouldlines to be seen... when i got around painting it was after a long cleanup of my workspace... i was frustrated as hell as i dont like to clean up... then i was in painters heaven and ddn´t want to ruin the moment for cleaning up mouldlines... so yep there on my sins will be lots of more minis with mouldlines...one day this will be my ruin....
would love to but the bitz box wouldn´t support that...and the ones i got i probably need for the real deal to make widespread carnage in the name of the empress..
Command squad is 4 guardsmen +1 commander. You can increase the size with an optional 1 astropath, 1 Fleet officer, 1 artillery officer and 1-2 bodyguards. The astropath is the only one who wouldnt look fine as a Mordian IMO. @ FITZZ, i like the shotgun is very Max Payne.
hmmmm have to give the additions a thought....willl have to look up whats possible through them...
in videaogames i tend to use shotguns a lot, like the full sound of them and the vast destructive power.... something about a shotgun thats just says: yeah suckker thats for you and i anint fuzzing around no more...
Viktor von Domm wrote:i probably get enough together for seven vik
Viktor von Domm wrote:and then i started to convert some shotguns for the use on veteran soldiers ...after a lenghty helpfull pm session with perkustin...thanks man for your insights^^ this is made after your inspiration!
Hey, nice, simple conversions! How did you do them?
well my shotguns work but the FW loks really good...doesn´t it? by the way you could as well order from a german trader via eby , you do realise that? cut out the middleman^^
well its easy and might get GW stuf copied for good and cheap by everyone...that is something in the black book of GW...
and the shotgun is made out of a standard flamethrower arm IG issuea and then cable and pouch and ignition cut of then the drilled thingy turned upside down... although i am not sure if that was a goo decission... will work on that tommorrow too so expect a new version soon^^
say mate, what do you think about using tau weapons as shotgus? worth a thought?
just been rumaging through ebay and saw these:http://cgi.ebay.de/BITZ-6-Pulssturmgewehre-Tau-/360312325942?pt=Rollenspiele_Tabletops&hash=item53e449c736
Also thought you might like to have a look ( or a squint since the pic is so small) at this.
Mordians done up in a more "Praetorian" color scheme...thought you might find it helpful.
something on the lines of these i had for my minis envisioned... thx FITZZ
at shrike...i probably thought the same... will see... made a bargain last year and bought a wild bunch of bitzmix on ebay and there was a bit of tau stuff also... and i found some nbits of them on ebay for refill^^
letter? About what?
The only DKoK unit that has shotguns is the engineers- basically the only choice that I'm buying official models for...
I might get some anway for inquisitorial henchmen or something...I'll wait until C:GK comes out...
Oh, that. Sorry, my brain's tired. Yeah, well, until I get the casting stuff (see my schedule), then it's postponed. BTW any chance of a pot of blazing orange to go with the shotgun?
Do you want me to cast the vox-caster as well?
Just so you know, this all depends on if I can fit the bits in one pack of the stuff. I might buy two...maybe...
if possible the voxcaster would be superb^^
well i could send you a pot no problem there, but expect long waiting.... i send neil something before chrimbo and it took way too long but i will do so...if you want a pot it might belonger as then i will do a package and this will take some time... needs to be built^^
i´ve run again havok on ebay and found q2uite some good parts as replacements for mags for shotguns... tau and marines have lots of usable stuff.. ad if all fails we could use scoutarms with shotguns^^ the have them for sure... and they wouldn´t be the worst looking ones^^
my oldset son has holidays tomorrow , winter ones so we will head to GW shop and buy a few paints and stuff and hopefully we will afterwards get some time to paint some of his minis...

my oldset son has holidays tomorrow , winter ones so we will head to GW shop and buy a few paints and stuff and hopefully we will afterwards get some time to paint some of his minis...
we´ll see, and now off to bed mate , me too, vik
Remember, it all depends on if I have enough mold. If not, I'll cast the torso, head and arms for you.
so i have now three arms for the future use of veterans as shotgunwielders...need now some divesifications as i couldn´t stand the idea of seven minis with the same arm...
get a bolter.
cut off the magazine, sight, and barrel.
glue 2x 2mm plasticard rods where the barrel was (in a vertical line- the rods are the same size as the bolter barrel)
get a heavy bolter mag and glue that on.
drill the plasticard rods.
Are you gonna psot a pic of them matey , i could do with some nice shotgun inspiartional pics, since i just threw out my tau weapon converted shotgun sqaud:-(

I will soon, probably this weekend, along with some pics of my WIP imperial fist libby, commander lenore and honour guard champion. I'd just like to mention that I dropped my heav bolter mag on the floor and it disappeared, so I've got an ork shoota boy's trimmed-down mag instead. It does look quite convincing, and soon I'll cast it and send you guys some if you want some if shipping isn't too much.

yep carpets are a devil send for modelers... i considered for a few secs a medeling apron once... you then stick the cloth to the table and trala^^ nothing ever disapears... but alas mostly my cut offs just soar freely through the air i would have to make it allover airthight...like a oxygen tent...
well did a quick shop built^^ and here it is from bolter to shotgun...my idea... couldn´t find suitable heavy mag and i dont know particular why anyway...

would that work?
vik
my version is similar, but with more chunky & short barrels and no safety (magazine covers it)
I'll post, and I much prefer my version to the scout ones, even though they're kinda similar.
well for a caidian there is a lefetime expectancy of a mere 30 seconds? so gun failure and hamr for arms is something not taken into much account with the armory?...
as for the vickers or the thompson? on to`p? i thought these had them hanging too? would you care to show me a pic of that?
thanks in advance and i wish you all a good night mateys,
like the lewis gun, know her of a game i played till my fingers bled^^....silent storm, thats a realy good strategic game and i recommend it to all that would be willing^^
will not talk about resin fumes^^
but back to shotguns...the flat disclike mag of the lewis and the sten mag would look not shotgun like...
what about mounting the bolter mag on top and have it look like a brengun?
would that still be looking like a shotgun?...
now there is a thought to be having.... my praetorians with brengunlike lasguns...hmmmm....
wher do i get a muuuuilllllionn mags now in the middle of the night????
Mine has a similar magazine, but straight (not banana-like) and fed from the side. The scout trimmed-down heavy bolter mag was the best. I'll go hunt for it...
Aussie: You call that a knoife?! This is a Knoife!
Normal: That's not a knife that's a gun.
Aussie: I see you've played Knoifey-Gunney before......
"Bang" I win!
normaly we have something like that at home...but well...normally as i said^^ but fear not i will be up and about tommorow and show you some updates i have been lazy about posting^^
sp after a far too long time of no update and mere stupid banter i want to show today some of the work i have done with my stil WIP minis of my cadians and also a testmodel of a future karskin standin model...
these represent (they are!) the first models that i have based in unique fashion... the plan for now is to give the different units different bases and thus showing and identifying them easier...the first abse is kind of muddy terrain...
there is still lots of work to be done but i wanted to show some effort here for you all out there...
since it will be a long hunt out there for some more true praetorian minis to form a unit i am constantly thinking about promoting commander reed to the titel commisar...what do you think, does the model fit the bill or would i get some difficulties with it?
well then there is the need for stormtroopers and i will use in this spot my not needed atm scouts of SM to fill the gap... for me it currently works... whats yer opinion?
here is a different scheme shown as i want them a bit darker and deadlier looking than the average footslogger...as seen above...
some more pics as i wanted to show off some effects via different lighhting...
hope you like and if not then dont bottle it up spill it out and let it be here^^
ouch that is a good one... the vet sprue i mean... got a closer look on the sprue somewhere? it would solve the shotgun problem in no time^^...
i am not so sold on the respirator heads...for some reason i think they do look quite good as is, but i have thought about using some of my cadian heads i got some habe these commmasks and some have glasses...
and dear shrike...never would i consider divorce...thats against god...you know? murder...welll thats a nother story... but do i have to remind you that a good relationship needs sometimes counseling?... we´re gonna see this through...stay strong and we get this sorted out...
I think you should get that praetorian some friends..he's fed up of drinking tea and eating cucumber sandwiches while hunting ospreys on his own methinks...
keep him as commander...and I might steal that different basing per unit idea...
how about this:
you get loads of other bits, and the heads really look the business:
http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Imperial_Guard/Cadian_Shock_Troops/CADIAN-INFANTRY-SQUAD-WITH-RESPIRATORS-UPGRADE-PACK.html plus you get a guy pulling a laspistol out of it's holster...kommissar konversion khance methinks?
lol jsut saw the last pic with the one baldy who appears to be a head smaller^^ he is looking fromleft to right... darn why must i work with all those giants...
the shotgun crew looks really good, the belt is priceless in itself...
how do you pay with FW? do they paypal? this is the easiest way for me to pay someting in different currencies... paypal just does the counting^^ me the paying^^
well i am still hunting down some cocumbereaters every now and then so one day he will get his chaps back i guess^^
are respirators really necesarry for stormtroopers?
the torso with the pistol drawing arm is a wonderful thing to behold^^ and i do want it...
-respirators would really make them look the part, and though not vital, would look really cool.
-the middle guy's belt- "you have half a pint in that canteen? I've got three."
-that midget...he's like that guy off pirates of the carribean:
register an account and send them your credit/debit card info.
well there starts and ends the trouble right there, me i live without a credit card and will do so for the time being...
the whole croakes issue is also because of that... just checked the payments variants and the wont do business with me it seems...
yep that midget looks extremly the part...
lol and i did the same thing with my catachans i refitted some of them either with helmetwearing heads or put helmets on their belts... looks cool will show some pics tomorrow...
well got some spare ones i could muster up from a barsprawl...
so seriously here lots of guys have cards too, but just not me and ther is a reason for it, banks dont trust me...and this is just as well, no pun intended ...
so how do you like my painting...?
hey hey hey hey hey hey hey!
ain´t even cold yet and you try to grab me stuff....
push off!
now seriously had a bit of a depressing day, but you guys showing how you missed me helps in that matter...even so you are a greedy, steeling and schemeing bunch of leftover grabbers...
will post some based and before priming soldiers i´ve made the last days so far to ease your pain fellas....will that help?
also as i made some quite nice deals in the last days via ebay and will be getting quite a bunch of catachans these days again, i am thinking of putting a force of them to a sideshow army together....like some attachable army and also working alone...
the footsloggers alone now go into the 100...
ach they you of when the postman rings...not what you are thinking neil....behave...and shrike as youzr underage your forbidden any nasty thoughts wahtsoever...!
or i tell you little sister!^^
by the way matey, so when is a picupdate from YOU happening? is it time to grab your stuff instead???? is it, is it, is it? now is it?
He he he , not laughing at the thought of your depressing day honest. just at the trouble you will get into if you continue buying minis ...instead of painting them! seriously hope everything is okay! great to hear your going to be doing some new conversions. and here is a little present to cheer you up...
Linking to examples of IP theft is not okay on DakkaDakka! Thanks! ~Manchu
aw, MODquisition killed it.
Vik, I'm just waiting for "natural" light- ATM I get home on weekdays at 6:00-ish, and by then it's too dark...bug me on friday and through the weekend...
now i am seriosly pi...ed off by the inquisition... shrike so waht was you saying lastly? i think they did that on purpose to show whose boss...
no on to some picture update of some work i did and on some work ahead of me...well quite some work ahead that is...
i recently assambled and based and remodeled quite some few minis...
from warzone i built some models to go as german looking trenchers with a stand in commissar...
they were based with PVA glue and then littered with some dried milk flakes...these later where sprayed on with some mere water to melt on the base...
the effect should ake the base a muddy heap in parts...so is my hope...well, we´ll see...
Groupshot from above...part of a for now fully armyshow...
Stand in Commissar from warzone...question, is this a functioning commissar mini?
melted junklooking base of the sarge...does anyone know what line faction these minis are from?
then i did some serious conversion work on some not so heavy ugly catachan minis i got from ebay...these minis did a deep plunge into the bitsbox of mine and came up with helmets either on head or on their belts. some of them also received an armschange or two and got extra equip with pouches and holsters...
they will be the first in line to get a new scheme to blen into this army...
these are 18 catachans helmeted...and soon to be primed...all plastic ones...
these here are all metal and expept one all primed...
these here are their colored ugly counterparts soon to be stripped to get a new and shiny face for the victorian empire...
closeup of uglyness soon to be mended...avert thy eyes...
some last chancers... i will be doing some penals to go with those as i like the idea behind the penial legion...its what i would do if i was a general...
well here comes the rest of regular cadian minis...and command as it is for now... more to come when bits arrive...
my mordians,
the still WIP cadian platoon...
stormtrooper scouts...
my OOP cadian force minis with some additional weapons from the here and now...maybe if i can get some spare weapons from the OOP times i change them back...
and for now these count as special characters as long as i dont have enough minis from their lines to form entire platoons from them...
Praetorian Commander Reed, and yet to be named Tallarn Sargent and a Gunner from Vostroya...at least the latter will soon be getting some "Kislevh" musketeers to be added to him...
and a full army shot of what i have currently under command... note that the 3 heavy weapon teams still on sprue are apsent or the time being as they will be getting the treatment later...
yep, that at least we can be asured off^^...and still there is no pic of my also soon to be enlisted fantasy stuff like musketeers, pistoliere riders, a canon, and some crazy fantasy stuff i want to use as preachers/ psykers and such things...all in all this is going to get pretty messy and hughe...
Wow you have loads of men it will be good to see them painted in a unifying scheme, i think the commisar look perfect, although i would swap out his gun for a boltpistol, or plasma pistol.
will post some conversion ideas later for my struggle to get vets with shotguns...
Automatically Appended Next Post: so today i converted a regular lasgun cadia style to work as a shotgun...in a nutshell...
as seen in the below pic i took a standard lasgun, scrabbed off the second hand and remodeled the longer part of the gun by adding a oart cut antenna of a tau drone...
this part now serves as a new barrel...
after that i took a secend edition SM bolter and cut off the mag and glued it on the shotgun. after that whole procedure i used a special glue for mending ceramics... it is somehwhat more ticker and thus i could use it quite good for gapefilling...
then for the show up effect i simply basecoated/primed the whole bit with chaos black and added afterwards some metal color...then badab wash...end result is here to be seen...
above the wooden cutting mat^^ i show a different aproach of the shotgun search...again a secend edition SM bolter that i cut off its barrel entirely and added a double barrel bit i created out of two parts from a spear form elves sprue...

so which design looks more suitable?
vik
hmm...the top one looks like a kind of semi-auto one like the AA-12, while the bottom one looks kinda like a pump-action...both look good, but depends what role...semi-auto or pump-action?
BTW what's the commissar from? I might get one with dual-bolt pistols and a DKoK head...
he´s from warzone minis.... might be bauhaus style don´t know really...
i have also thought of adding a round mag for the lower gun...or the upper don´t know...probably the look i wnat is something like:
the hackhammer fully auto shotgun...deadly as sin and perfectly for anti riot...
Viktor von Domm wrote:he´s from warzone minis.... might be bauhaus style don´t know really...

lol...the muzzle looks like a lasgun muzzle...
If you're trying to go for rapid-fire, go for a drum mag.
maybe about 5 guys with riot helmets, batons (CCW's) and those..perfect riot guardsmen...
if you did, I'd pay for a few of those to go in a diorama...maybe even swap my diorama imperial fists for a few...
hmm...maybe I could slot in my favorite models into the diorama slots whenever I want...thanks for the (unintentional) idea, vik!
but yeah. Drum mag on the top one is a must.
BTW link to the commissar stand-in?
Spiffing army old boy! You could use a stormhammer with the commander taking tea and crumpets on a deck while ordering a broadside and admiring the view. (I think that tank is just a navy battleship with wheels)
thanks FiTZZ, i am really trying as hell to ghet the look right...the left one is my favorite so far but tehre is still something tahts still not filling the bill...
on coincidence i aquired 10 more today^^
and also some hounds i want to remodel as they are a bit zomby looking for now but will be like a hunting flock of my HQ... what rules could work for these then?
Viktor von Domm wrote:on coincidence i aquired 10 more today^^

dunno...there aren't many fast infrantry units...and I don't think rought riders suit hounds...
make up your own:
Unit- 10-20
hound- WS4 BS- S4 T3 A2 W1 I4 Ld7 Sv-
move through cover
rending
12" movement
6pts each
hunter- WS3 BS3 S3 T3 A2 W1 I3 Ld7 Sv5+
lasgun/laspistol/shotgun
counts-as rough rider (lance and one of the above weapons)

i made a drum mag out of those things the curtains roll on the rails if you use those at all...will show you tomorrow... the scale is for me perfect...
Automatically Appended Next Post: and best thing is i could use the grenade launcher psraer mag pouches that you get in abandon on every sprue then too.,..
If your looking for Victoriana old boy Copplestone Castings have some nice bits and bobs. I also rather like whats been showing up on the Lead Adventurer forums. Are you aware of the Wargames Factory British Firing Line as well?
this will look so cool, if i can pull it off my vets will look like aussi bushwackers and have their shotguns and of course some nice flamers to go with them ...so takje heed hordes armies^^
Viktor von Domm wrote:this will look so cool, if i can pull it off my vets will look like aussi bushwackers and have their shotguns and of course some nice flamers to go with them ...so takje heed hordes armies^^
these rapid fire shotguns better be wielded by the proper aussies of 40k- catachan.
so small update time for my soon to be built up vets with shotguns...
continuing the discussion and work on how a shotgun should look like i have worked some more on the bolter like shotgun and added a grip and a round mag...
seen below...
then i worked on two catachans to look like aussi bushwackers...hats are from fantasy epmire musketeers and i added on the one bloke a grenadelauncher mag pouch...
hope you like the very easy conversion of lasgun to shotgun, the conversion is now without the further need of tau parts and for me looks like i hit the nail on the spot so to speak...
those bushwakers are pretty nice vik the guns and hats really suit them. think your onto something there. And the bolter / shotty looks nearly perfect just slice of that imperial eagle, cut a chunk from the roud mag and shift it a tad higher, well in my humble oppinion anyhow ;-)
neil101 wrote:just slice of that imperial eagle, cut a chunk from the roud mag and shift it a tad higher, well in my humble oppinion anyhow ;-)
^ what he said.
trim the mag down at the top, re-glue, file off the eagle and we'll take another look. Then I'll decide if I think it need the grip to be cut off.
well mates your ideas i will take in consideration, tomorrow i will do the suggested work asap...
but bear in mind that this is rather a sideproject for shotguns...the real deal will be done with standard lasguns converted into shotguns...
and again there is a pic update here on this nice blog^^
i recently finished building and converting FIVE aussi bushwhackers...(had it looked up and it needed an extra "H" to be correctly spelled^^)
used numerous parts form fantasy empire stuff like heads and hats^^
all are now wielding the new shotgunmodel...its the fashion these days...
the work is a bit subdued now as i ran out of new and fresh minis to remodel in that fashion...i hope during the next week some of my bitz shipment will arrive and then it is on to more veteran bulding...
so without further addo here are my first veterans :
groupshot...
reloading and patched one...
CHARGE!!!!
take this and this and this and this and this and this....
C&C please as there is some unsuryness about the size of the heads...
look about two pages ago and that was my first go at the shotgun^^ wasnt that good in my opinion...that new one is one heck of a better try...and all in one go and also multi poses able too...

If you don't have a caster, post me one and I'll cast it, and hand back the original.

i know a good idea when i see one . the vets are looking spot on matey , shotguns are perfect , and the detailed touches such as the knife in the ground are really characterfull

remember?
I meant leave the "tubes" on as the barrels, with this version- Imagine it w/o nozzle or tank.
now i understood...see a pic speaks volumes more ...even dummies like me then understand^^
so fellas here i have some work done...i have currently the heavy weapon structure of my army under my wing and therefore i am creating the bases to go for the autocanons and the likes...i am also maybe planning on magnetising the weapons so to use them in whichever way i need them...sounds messy? probably will be...
for the for now four bases of heavy weapons i have now completed the third sandbagbarrier to shield the crew...
see for yourself...:
the crew as seen is from the first team...one normal looking screaming gunner and the other one is supposed to be having a break from sweating his helmet full of angst...he is preparing to get a drink from his canteen...i combined for him the screaming catachan head and a helmetholding arm from the command spure of cadia...
the next crew will be a shooting one kneeling and also a angstridden cadian soldier with desperate flailing hands...
the idea behin all these is that i want to create the bases like small dioramas... each telling a different and unique story...so i try to also create the bases as homely as possible with lots of details thrown in...hope they dont get to busy looking...but i think if you put that much work in a fortified postition you will try to get it at lest a bit homley and comfy for the time being...well thats the former lazy sodier in me doing the concepts^^
feel free to comment, leave criticism and whatewver you deem needed here^^

nice job there!
you got any of those SM flamers to cut up? I'm all out...
I can just imagine a drunk heavy weapons sarge...
"Hey mate- shoot whatever, I need to p***...."
"But sir-"
"-I F***ING LOVE YOU, MAN!"
"thankyou, sir, but shouldn't you be directing me?"
"nah."
"the commissar's here, and he doesn't look happy..."
"hey, commissar- your father was a jokaero and you mother smelt of eldar berries!"
*blam*
nope neil, the sandbags are made from FIMO, a putty that has to be heated to get rock hard... if not heated you can work with this putty for days...it has a very soft structure so no real modeling in small detail possible to my opinion...but maybe if you add a cable inside you can get a bit od more detailed modeling done...and one thing thats not possible...like GS can be used for hair and stuff or belts and other things directly on the model it wouldnt work as you have to heat it up to 170 (?) degrees... at that temperature the plastic would melt but the FIMO would get hard...
but for me now it is perfect to get a bit of sculpting know how to learn and try...
at shrike i do have some of those flamers...you think i should do that even if i have a working model of shotguns? will have a go tomorrow on that try...
for now i want to show you the complete crew of the heavy weapons teams i have done so far...including a medic and an officer all in kneeling position^^ as this is the only pose i have left for now of feets^^...
the officer and the medic have been made from tankcommander bodies i brutally cut up to be mounted on some extra leftover kneeling feets...with added details from sprues it really worked...
so here are the pics...:
and here the medic and officer together in close up...
i need lots more fantasy heads as these give my minis extra tons of character^^
that crazy medic:
"IT'S ALIVE!!!"
"I was already alive, then you saw a wart on my arm and amputated."
"...IT'S ALIVE!!!"
"I'm not an it- I'm unique."
10,000,000,000 guardsmen in unison- "we're all unique!"
well i had a quick go at a flamer and it came out ugly... didnt made a pic yet but i can show it...it looks too boxy in my opinion...the guardsmen are to tine to have these big shotguns... all parts on their own work good its just when one sees them in cadian hands that they look off...
Viktor von Domm wrote:well i had a quick go at a flamer and it came out ugly... didnt made a pic yet but i can show it...it looks too boxy in my opinion...the guardsmen are to tine to have these big shotguns... all parts on their own work good its just when one sees them in cadian hands that they look off...
will post `morrow some proof shots^^
vik
well, the flamer was a marine one, so it'll probably look good on a scout or SM...
not for now but maybe i can make some loose mockup and comparissionshots for cadian and catachen...i secretly plan on at least making two vets squads, so one will be catachans as bushwhackers and one will be more cadian looking...
Viktor von Domm wrote:not for now but maybe i can make some loose mockup and comparissionshots for cadian and catachen...i secretly plan on at least making two vets squads, so one will be catachans as bushwhackers and one will be more cadian looking...
got it now^^
yeah i just loved the head... so much character and he even looks a bit anoyed, like : "what? your wounded...again??? you know some of you gueardsmen know that i am a busy man and die on the spot instead of coming to me all wounded and making a fuss of them selves to me...cheesh...guardsmen these days...give me 100 SM instead of 10000 guardsmen... at least that would be less work for me..."
vik
Automatically Appended Next Post: thx perkustin... yeah i thought i need lots more of really aiming vets... after all they are called vets for being still alive...so this means in short they had to shoot the way to actually get some of their enemies... instead of being just meatshields^^ and whoever shot a gun in his life will know that shooting from the hip is wont cut the thing....
i bet a shotgun isn´t that easy to get shooting and actually hitting the "aimed" (for lack of a better word...) target...
and a minigun unless your a SM is totally out of the question... the gatling minigun they use in the first predator movie is just ridiculous to get a decent hit... it is the same effectiviness as a nuke... general area to hit and after all is devasted you say: "we won"... for a clear and clean shotr alwas aim...better lay down on the ground and have a nice firm threepoint hold...then your able to actually hit the aimed target... and not by sheer luck...
a good swing with an axe is another thing so... but if you never swung one you might actually cut off you own legs^^ rather then anything infron of ye^^ and if you dont hit anything in the first swing then your bound to have lots of fun after that failed attempt...

-with the amount of shots the big miniguns dish out, you don't need to aim. That is, until it jams...
-assault cannon=minigun?
they look really good... maybe one day i will consider buying some...would probably look good for catachans in full camo like in the predator movie^^
hell yeah, there´s never a super heavy axe when needed...but then again if the axe is very light weight where do you get the killing amount of energy to slash and maim? you build up energy with the first swing and release this in the crushing swing... if the axe is to light then you wont get that hard impact you need... swords are in my opinion easier to handle in some parts... long blade vs small but heavy blade... weight with an axe is your friend here^^ swords can be non heavy as their bladeedge does the cutting...

hmm...good point...
but we can all agree that the best kind of blade is a katana. strong, lightweight and they look awesome.
no way... wanna know what blade is best? i tell ye...
turn around and the nonglittering edge thats slithering through your now turned throat is^^...i was right behind ye biding my time and then a quick slash of steel against unprotected flesh...quick, noiseless and better than anything else... in killing there is no glory or decency just someone willing and doing a dirty deed thats needed doing...
well one things fer sure here i wont do any weapons with leftover blood... never liked that... after all when your done with your victim you can clean the balde with its clothes^^
what if his clothes are covered in blood?
and what if the killer doesn't have time to wipe his blade clean?
what if the killer's ork or chaos, where they don't bother?
hmmm chaos is a tricky one... one day this could take me fancy^^... messy orks... blundgeon one to death? nawww... their builts look stunning but i am not for the green hides...
and since i cut from behind the back the throat frontside i think the back will be left pretty clean.... after all i dont want to ruin my all spruced up tuxedo....

and that line is pretty clever^^
I like the idea of a blade sharpener as a piece...no rules of course...purely decorative...maybe have one on the airship?
with a suitable old-man head?
Vik- You have to make this thing.
You have to put it on the airship.
You have to either give him an old-guy head or a classic "oliver"-style cockney flat-cap urchin head.
think this would look cool too...there will be definatly some psare charcters on the airship for athosphere... like deckscrubbing ones and such stuff... the sharpener is a cool and i think very original idea...and lots of scratchbuild oportunities...best thing would be to get a child or mybe even a hobbit body to use it....hmmm
cool idea mates... goes to show when lots of minds work in unison^^
Automatically Appended Next Post: or better still what about a goblin/gretchkin to use as a oliver here? could GS the hair after that... got some old space crusade gobos i could use as base to built him up...
i could do the whole decking crew with them got quite a bit of them...
well at least you have to admit that using urchin kids for that job is a well tested methode...
as i´ve read by a favorite author of mine...:
You did something because it had always been done, and the explanation was "but we've always done it this way." A million dead people can't have been wrong, can they?
as a rather uneducated german i have to ask for either quotations notifications or a translation... you sir have a written accent thats got no matching in translation...
