Red Corsairs WIP (Tiger Claws Return from the Maelstrom) @ 2011/02/25 16:46:17

Post by: Styrofoam04

So I decided to update this Blog to suit my recent changes in my Army. For those of you who haven’t read this blog before please keep in mind that I have copied the Original Post and pasted it in the second post to avoid confusion.

In April of 2011, I have decided to give up on the Chaos Codex. I never really thought of the Red Corsairs as Chaos anyway. TBH I don’t even think of them as Traitors or Renegades. I think of Huron as a monarch and the Maelstrom His Kingdom to Defend; the Red Corsairs, his Royal Guard. But instead of being called King he named himself Tyrant. The Tyrant of Badab. The Imperium was threatened by his power and unjustly removed him from his throne. All titles and records removed. Like any monarch with their kingdom lost, He Fights Back. Builds an army with anything he can take from the plate of the imperial table.

That being said I believe that the Red Corsairs would have access to all SM equipment and technology (anything they can take). So the next step was to pick a codex. So I created a Thread Red Corsairs List from Chaos to Renegade Marines and with a lot of help I chose the SW Codex.

HQ: Huron Blackheart - complete
1 Wolf Lord in Power Armour, (Belt of Russ;Wolf Tail Talisman; Power Weapon x1; Powerfist x1)

(The original post has been moved to here for clarity and continuation)

So I received a PM asking to create a thread of my Red Corsairs and Progress. Currently I have a Showcase thread of all my completed work called Master of the Red Corsairs, and a WIP of a Marine swap with Gits, called Last Corsair Standing. But i dont have a blog of my actual progress of the Red Corsairs. I have a tendency to not finishing things(I still haven't finished Gits marine ). I have alot of half finished works and new ideas that I started that I would like to post here. Maybe with a little push I can add finished work to my Showcase.

As for what I'm doing right now:

  • I started to make a squad of SW Chosen. Captured and converted (or even stolen geneseed) from the wolf of Fernis. These will replace the Chosen lost in the Last Corsair Standing battle. These will be called Huron's Wolves. I bought a Rhino on Kijiji, and it had the razorback top piece glued on, using plastic glue so there is no way that that is coming off. I painted it the same colours as my other Rhino but I added alot of weathering and rust to it. The interior I painted grey, and put on some space wolf decals in there. I then used the Hairspray method and using my air brush, painted it bleached bone. I then scratched off some paint to make it look like animals were trapped in there like dogs (HA! I kill me). I haven't done it yet but i decided to use a dollar store strainer as a chain-link fence and cover the openings. LIke a Dog pen or kennel, with a 'release the dogs' feel. As for the Chosen's progress, I have painted one body and I really like the way it looks. I converted a SW bolter to a melta and it needs to be painted. I have also painted 20 SW faces to pick and choose from. This squad of chosen will be 2 meltas and 3 flamers. I am magnetizing the arms just in case i want to change this.

  • I'm not a fan of the Red Corsairs being Chaos. I believe that they are just Renegade SM. (I really don't see them as Renegade either, more like they were betrayed by the Emperior). In time I would like to convert my army to SM so I started ripping off the heads off my Khorne Berzerkers. I want to make them less Khorny (Ha! I did it again). I'll make them a SW/zerker mix. Huron playing around with SW geneseed. I have air brushed a majority of them with Red Gore basecoat. I have run out of paint and would like to buy the Vallejo Game Colour Gory Red and Bloody red, but i'm having a hard time finding it. I was also thinking that I might use that converted Rhino for my Berzerkers instead (haven't decided).

  • I have added to my first Rhino. I have cut out the Red Corsairs symbol out of plastic card and glued it to the top doors and painted it to match my avatar picture. I want to cast this symbol so I don't have to do it again but its already finished and worried about wreaking it. After I do it I would like to put another symbol on the side, but just the fist.

  • I have also done alot of work on my LR. It's about 90% done. Painted using my airbrush.

  • like I said I have alot of unfinished business. I really need to finish Gits' Marine

I normally Dakka when I'm at work. So the text usually gets written here and the photos are added when I get home. I will take a picture of everything for each section. Maybe with some inspiration I will figure what to work on first.

Thanks ahead of time for your patience and alot more puns to come

    (End of Original Post)

I did a bit of clean up on my first post.

Here is the SW chosen painted body test:

And here is his converted Meltagun:

Keep the red bright, I say. I enjoy painting red, but it can be hard to pull off right. I'll be the army will look great on the tabletop. I hate dull looking armies.

And this is what I have added to it. I have cut out the Red Corsairs symbol out of plastic card and glued it to the top doors and painted it to match my avatar picture.

Like i said in my first post I want to cast this symbol so I don't have to do it again but its already finished and worried about wreaking it. After I do it I would like to put another symbol on the side, but just the fist

Here is the current WIP of my other Rhino the one I bought on Kijiji. I going to cut up a cheap strainer and cover the openings for a chain-link fence to make it look like a Dog pen or kennel, with a 'release the dogs' feel.

    The Interior

I still have alot to do for this as well

Nice work, I'm looking forward to more.

Two questions, firstly how do you paint your red? it looks exactly like the colour I'm aiming for.
Secondly, how did you get the peeling paint effect on the inside of the rhino, its amazing!

    Keep it up!

Thanks, I have alot more pictures of all my WIP but I dont want to overload with too many pics.

As for the red on my marines:

    Basecoat: Mechrite Red
    Then: Red Gore
1st highlight: 50% Red Gore and Blood Red
2nd highlight: Many thinned layers of Blood red, until smooth
Wash: Devlan Mud in recesses (I'm now experimenting with 50% Devlan Mud and Baal Red wash)
3rd highlight: re-apply the Blood red
Final highlight: 40% Fiery Orange and 60% Blood Red (They no longer make Fiery Orange, but it is pretty much Blazing Orange and yellow)

As for the weathering inside the Rhino I used the Hairspray technique
Here are a few Videos I followed:

    like this Land Raider:

I painted this using my airbrush, but I ran out of paint. I'm looking to buy new paint but I dont want to use GW paint. I would like to try Vallejo paints. Unfortunately I need Vallejo Game paint and I can only find Vallejo model paints.

    These Game Colours in particular:
    Gorey Red
    Bloody Red

Nice stuff so far! The converted SW for your bodyguard are great.

You might want to wait until you start a model fresh to switch to Vallejo- switching mid-model can be a bit odd, even with fairly compatible ranges.

I started Working on my berzerkers. And I need a little advice. I started ripping the heads off them, (Because I dont like the rabbit ears) and filing down the khorne symbols. They are still going to be my berzerkers I just dont like them looking like berzerkers.

Here is what my berzerkers look like before (mind you I only painted 2)

Here is my test model. The shoulder pads will be black with red trim

What do you think? Any suggestions?

well since I didn't get a response on my berzerker issue I decided to put it aside like everything else.

So I bought some items from Bunker's swap:

    2 Razorbacks/Rhinos

    5 Missile Launcher Marines

    2 Dreadnoughts (AoBR)

    2 Predators

I got a good price for them. The paint job on them was done with an air brush and it looks pretty decent. The only problem I had was the everything is glued in to place. The turrets, Storm bolters, doors, hatches and even the front window cover.

For my army, well the Chaos part of it, only needs Rhinos. So the first thing I needed to do was take apart the Predators. Luckily, the main turrets on both, only had a bit of super glue. So with some force they came off easy. With a bit sanding it was easily cleaned as well. The sponsens were easier to come off. Woot I have 2 more Rhinos! But I didn't spend money on Predators just to make Rhinos. I plan to magnetize them to switch back and forth for when I switch over to Space Marines. The problem I have with them now is the back and top hatches are glued and not budging.

The Razorback's top hatches switch from Rhino Hatch to Plasma/lasscannon turret. The Plasma/Lascannon turrets are also glued in place. With force I managed to separate them into each piece. I then pinned them so it now pivots up and down and the turret also rotate. Again the back hatch and the Storm bolters are not budging.

Is their a way to weaken superglue?

There are nothing wrong with the SM missile launchers or the Dreads. Although for the dreads, I will need to buy bases as these ones didn't have any.

The next step would be if I should paint them all or not. Now My army, being the Red Corsairs, they pretty much take technologies and refit them. So should I leave them the way they are and just put a red 'X' on them? Should I do the hairspray method and paint over them and scratch way the top layer paint to show the colours underneath? Or do I just paint them in my colours?

    Suggestions really needed

Great looking miniatures i wish my corsairs were that good!
as for the dreadnoughts i think the hairspray technique would be the best as long as the corsair scheme is more prominent.

Superglue becomes brittle if you freeze it or make it extremely cold - some people say nail varnish remover of some kind weakens the bond too.

Nice looking force so far, excellent work with the weathering, both on the inside and out!

The other way to work on super glue is with acetone. Stop at your local drug store and you can pick up acetone in the nail polish remover section really cheap. Don't buy the hobby acetone as you'll pay about 10x as much for it and it's the same stuff.

Red Corsairs WIP (Tiger Claws Return from the Maelstrom) @ 2011/04/04 17:46:48

But what about the plastic? I heard that the acetone tends to soften the plastic or even melt it?

Red Corsairs WIP (Tiger Claws Return from the Maelstrom) @ 2011/04/04 18:46:29

    Post by: Gitsplitta

I'm sure if you left it on long enough it would, but in the short term the glue will soften before the plastic starts to fail.

Thanks I'll give it a try

Talking to friend of mine, he suggests that I paint all of them in my colours but make 1 Rhino with the hairspray weathered paint flakes showing spots of white and green

    like my SW captured Rhino

That's a good idea Styro. I was wondering about the esprit d' cour (sp?) of the corsairs... Would they go out of their way to make equipment look perfect (i.e. take pride in having a cleanly "corsair" rhino) or would they just make it identifiable so it didn't come under friendly fire & then use it up until it was just discarded. Not meaning to cast any aspersions here, just wondering about your opinions on the "professional pride" they would take in aesthetics (as opposed to things that worked well for them, which is another matter entirely).

Red Corsairs WIP (Tiger Claws Return from the Maelstrom) @ 2011/04/04 20:25:08

    Post by: Styrofoam04

Thats a tough one. I believe Huron has alot of pride, and is full of himself. I think he believes that his army can take on the imperium. So I would say yes he would go out of his way to make his equipment look perfect. He would make sure that his enemy knows (and fears) him.

On the other hand, How much resources does he have in the Maelstrom and how far does his claw reach in the ranks. His 1st company would be pristine, but what about the rest. Pirates, Rebels, converts would they follow suit? If so, to what end? In the last Chaos codex they have chapters converted to the Red Corsairs. They kept their colours but put a Red 'X" over their symbols and icons (I will prolly do this until I have painted them). Pirates have more 'individuals' and therefore less likely to care for the aesthetics.

Rebels are unified, and aesthetics would be 2nd to usefulness. They would have pride in their equipment. It is their lifeline. repair and functionality would be priority over looks. If resources permitted then they keep their equipment in perfect order for their cause.

Lastly, It could be a tactical ploy. If his army looks unorganized and dilapidated, it would confer his enemy with more confidence and more likely make mistakes.

As I said it's a tough one! and prolly needs much debate and that why I'm asking for suggestions and Ideas. Right now I have one converted SW Rhino for Hurons Wolves. Should I assimilate Bunkers army to look Pristine Red Corsairs, or a dilapidated Black & Red with his colours seeping through, or Pristine Bunker units w/ the Red Corsairs 'X'?

    Here are his pics:

I think at least in some cases... leaving the original colors in tact with just the "X" to show the assimilation into the corsairs would be a very powerful image... especially when combined with elite units that "pure" corsair and wear the full colors. The simple act of NOT re-painting the armor into the corsair colors shows defiance and disdain for the established order...

Very appealing to me on a number of levels... an outward rejection of Imperial philosophy expressed on their armor.

That a good point. I plan on doing the same for your Mantis warrior you made me. I plan on the whole squad to match his colours in defiance of the Emperor. Well that will happen after I finish my marine and terrain. Until then keep him safe lol

I guess for now I will paint the 'X" on them all until I sort out which will be painted or not

So I put my models in the freezer and I forgot all about them, Until the 'My Old Lady' opened the freezer to figure out what to make for dinner.... Rhino Stew, Predator Sandwich. lol

With some force I manage to separate the Storm Bolters, remove the top hatches and open the back hatch. Only one back hatch refused to open. On one top hatch a little tab broke off. I removed it w/ and exacto knife and glued it back into place. I'm really happy how this turned out.

    Thanks Earthbeard

As for the rest I'm not to worried about it, but if I do I will go with the nail polish technique.

So a few months back I created a Warhammer group Toronto WH40K and I met a great group of players. We try to play once or twice a month.

Well last Sat April 2nd I was having a horrible day! we were to meet at a certain FLGS around 11am. I met up with one player before hand and we had breakfast. We ended up getting to the FLGS around 10:45am. We got in as soon as they opened and headed to the basement gaming room. This place was disgusting! It was dirty and smelled like feces. Turns out the sanitary pipe was disconnected for the trap of a fixture above. 10min later a repair guy came by and extended the pipe to the trap. Around that time we noticed roaches. Some magic kids were about to sit at a table under the "fixed" pipe when sewage splashed on their table. That was it and we left. I felt horrible because I had no way to warn the others.

So my buddy and I went to a GW instead and we had a quick game because I had not much time left. During my rush, I knocked over my defiler smashing it to pieces (the good one) and about 5-6 marines, them breaking as well. Some fat guy knocked over my $7k laptop... but I caught it by the corner at the last second. Later while chewing gum(which I haven't done for a long time) I bit my tongue to the point where it was bleeding. To top it all off I also lost the game out right.

I got out of there, jumped into the van, and picked up "The Old Crow'. On the way home on the highway. a few cars in front slammed on the breaks. I stoped in time, and we were ok but my mini flew (and me bing too cheap to buy real cases, they were in boxes) and spilled out and alot of them broke.

So now I have alot of repairing to do

Red Corsairs WIP (Tiger Claws Return from the Maelstrom) @ 2011/04/06 14:08:43

    Post by: Gitsplitta

Look at it this way.... you just worked off an entire year's worth of bad Karma in one day. Should be clear sailing from here on out!

You might also talk to the heath department about that FLGS, seriously... that's not OK. Especially where kids are involved who might not realize the risks.

So I did some repairing last night. My good Defilier, the one that shattered is fixed again, although one claw will no longer open or close. I had to glue it in place. The rest of it wasn't difficult to repair. So it looks as good as it did before the accident.

Glued back together some of the damaged marines. I still have a few to go.

Tonight if I find time, I will prolly work on the Terrain piece for Il Duce.

So I had my second game against More Dakka and his Bad Moon Orks. I don't think I have ever been wiped out completely before. We had a Pitched battle, Annihilation game. and thats what he did annihilated my Corsairs. I bought a new set of dice and they worked! So I can't blame them ( I can only blame the Codex now haha)

He built a Killa-Kan wall which I couldn't get through. Also being Squad based I couldn't kill them either. I played More Dakka before and in that game 1 squad of 8 bezerkers killed 30 of his orks in a few turns. So I expected this again so I up'ed my zerkers to 10 and added Skull Champions with power swords.

Boy was I surprised! Figuring my Zerks had no chance against these walking garbage cans I hesitated and held them back. This ended up being my fatal mistake:

For as you can see I blocked my self in and created a wall wreaked rhinos. Which he overcame. My bloodthirstily Berzerkers fought really hard causing more wounds then ever before. but it was not effective enough. I had 3 squads fighting his one Hq squad. but his Boss had some field and the rest had feel no pain and on top of that each had more then one wound. So they held their ground. I don't think I faced anything this tough before.

It didn't take long for his Kans and boys to catch up ans slowly take my squads out one at a time:

All dead, 3 ineffective squads dead! I had the best rolls of my life and I could get passed the double saves.

Turn 4 all I had left was a chosen squad in a rhino that outflanked on the wrong side and 2 Chaos Marines holding back the horde:

My chosen managed to kill a Kan for my one and only kill point before ... they died by 'Mr Happy':

    More Dakka's Deff Dread

If there anything I missed or that More Dakka can fill in by all means. I need to fig out a counter for this. I cant wait to play him again, hopefully I'll be ready.

Nob squads are really tough, 2 wounds, better armor, invuls if you pay for them, FNP, multiple PKs... there's a lot to contend with. Put them on bikes and it's even worse.

Kans are great... love them. Decent BS and their low WS does not hamper them all that much in CC (table is favorable). I'm assuming he had a mek w/ KFF somewhere?

Orks are a tough nut to crack... very competitive, multiple ways to get invuls. They do have problems popping heavy armor from a distance, but even the rank-and-file are formidable in CC and they'll be all over you by turn 2.

As a marine player who also plays orks... I have a couple of suggestions, but they're far from a sure thing.

    - Bottling up the advance is a good thing. If you can sacrifice a cheap rhino or two to plug a hole, it's usually worth the extra turn of shooting it buys you. That's terrain dependent though.
    - Taking out transports is important. That nob squad is no where near as imposing if it's foot-slogging it's way across the field.
    - Pie plates (even weak ones) can really hurt them.
    - Kans can be killed by immobilization as they're taken in squadrons, giving you a 50% chance for a kill on a pen & even a chance for a kill on a glance.
    - Beware battlewagons w/ deff rollas... (brings back Adepticon nightmares... *shudder*)
    - One rifleman dread (don't know if you can take these) can completely ruin a Kan squads day due to shot allocation rules.

Nice to see your boys in action Styro. Keep the faith brother! (or lack of it)

    Great game man,

I had a lot of fun, and it was also fun just hanging out and chatting about 40K stuff while we were playing.

One thing that was left out in this batrep is the sheer destruction that my Lootaz caused all game. I had 12 in a building on the top left corner of the board (from the perspective of the pictures).

All of the craters you see on the board are the remnants of 4 rhinos and 2 defilers that the Lootaz blew up in each round. I attribute this to luck and the fact that they were un-harassed all game. I rolled the full 36 shots on them every round but one where I rolled a 4 and got 24 shots (I think 22 cause 1 guy didn't have LOS).

If they had been killed/routed or just worn down a bit in T1 then most of those vehicles would have survived all game (I honestly had no other contingency for the Defilers).

The Nobz just shined that game, I think I just had amazing rolls with them as I fully expected them to be killed when you charged with the berzerkers and CSM squad with the PF. But btwn 4+, 5++, FNP and full wound allocation they just kept shrugging off turn after turn of punishment until 1 Kan and 30 Boyz got in to support them.

For those interested it was a WB with PK BP AS Cybork and EA, Big Mek with Kff and Burna, 6 Nobz inc Painboy with Cybork, 1 PK and Waaagh banner, 2 Uge Choppas, 2 slugga choppas, all equipped for wound allocation.

During the game with my Rhino wall I thought of your battle report at Adepticon 2011 at first I thought it was good, but I should have played more aggressively I should have had 2 full squads of zerkers charge the kans 40+ 6str attacks

Thanks I tried to block that out of my memory

The Test model looks really good , especially the armours colours and the converted Melta. Will any of the Huron's Wolfs be affected by the Malestorms Warp energy? Like mutated Wolfen or unaffected.

I have picked up and started reading other codex's in order to make the transition. SW looks promising and balanced. But BA is about CC and my army is too. Then there is regular SM

I anyone can help with my list please post here
If you have suggestions modeling the conversion then by all means stay here

    2 Dreadnoughts (AoBR)

    2 Predators

I got a good price for them. The paint job on them was done with an air brush and it looks pretty decent.

So I finally Had a few games with my Red Corsairs as SW.

    "Huron's Wolves"

There is a tournament in July that i would like to go to, So I need to practice my SW. A few Guys and I from the Toronto WH40K thread met up at a local FLGS and had a few games.

I had 2 games. both 1500pts and both against BA players.

    My list

    HQ: Huron Blackheart
1 Wolf Lord in Power Armour, (Belt of Russ;Wolf Tail Talisman; Power Weapon x1; Powerfist x1)

    Elite:
9 Wolf Guard in Power Armour (Bolt Pistol ; Power Weapon x9)
    1 Rhino

    Troops:
10 Grey Hunters Pack, (Meltagun x2)
    1 Rhino

10 Grey Hunters Pack, (Meltagun x2)
    1 Rhino

10 Grey Hunters Pack, (Meltagun x2)
    1 Rhino

    Heavy Support:
5 Long Fangs Pack, (Missile Launcher x5)
1 Squad Leader (Bolt Pistol; Close Combat Weapon)
1 Razorback (Lascannon and TL Plasmagun)

    1 Predator, (Lascannon (each side))

    1 Predator, (Lascannon (each side))

    1447pts

Not the best SW list, but it suits my play style.

The first game was C&C with Dawn of War. This was my first time using the SW codex and for that reason my opponent decided to make a fun list. It was a good game that lasted 7 turns. If it ended on the 6th turn it would have been a tie. At this point He had wiped out my long Fangs and a unit of Grey Hunters at my control point, but he failed to destroy my Rhino which contested it. Huron and His Wolf Guard and the other 2 Grey Hunter units had to foot slog for 3 turns, but finally in the 6th turn I was able to contest the other control point for the tie. We then rolled for an additional turn and rolled a 6. Game On!! Huron and his Wolf Guard wiped out the remaining unit in 1 assault for the Win!

It was a great first game. I believe that if he had stuck to his original list he would have won.

The second game was against Bunker. It ended up being annihilation with Spear Head. Bunker Had the advantage for I have alot of units and rhinos. A few of the guys who were cheering me on were telling me that I have to hit him hard, because he can get more kill points off of me. The luck was in my corner (and my new dice)! ... I only lost a total of 3 kill points! He forfeited in the 3rd turn with not much left on the board.

Bunker wanted to waste away the tanks that my army pillaged from him, he managed to wreak one and immobilize another. The other two were unscathed! After the BA retreat these tanks and many BA tanks were salvaged to be used another Day for the Lord of the Maelstrom!

VVV I added these battles into my Signature Battle Reports banners. hopefully there will be a different pattern from my Chaos VVV

Here's a question. Now that I'm using the SW codex, should I start a new WIP thread?

My Colour scheme is not changing, and they will still be the Red Corsairs Just more wolfy.

2nd question: Should I keep the name "Red Corsairs" or change it to "Huron's Wolves"?

I think the front page (OP) is kind of a living document. Especially since this blog is still young, you'll get a lot of people reading it from the OP. So if it's relevant, changing the OP to reflect your current activity makes a lot of sense. However you don't want the following posts to not make any sense or be confusing once the OP is changed... so there's a balance to strike there.

I would recommend re-organizing it a bit, showing all the completed items at the top to get people's interest up, then the various stages of WIP projects from mostly done to less and less done. That way people can scroll down and see more and more pieces elevated to "complete" status, it also gives them an idea of your priorities as you build and paint.

I saw a cool picture in an old white dwarf from maybe 10+ years ago.

The guy was doing red corsairs, however in each squad he had 1 or 2 models who were ging through the "change"

For example he had a deathwing terminator who had decided to join the red corsairs, he painted the model as Deathwing, then over the top began painting the red corsair colours as if the armour was gradually changing (iirc he painted the model half red and half bone, going diagonally across, the loyalist half kept its original arm, but the red side had a chaos arm, the red then looked like it was branching or running (like tracks of blood) into the bone armour).

Good God that was long winded, but it may be a way to do the marines as they transform in to Corsairs.

Also I cannot remember which bookmaybe legends of the spacemarines, has a story about Huron Blackheart and Honsou of the Iron Warriors.
Huron owns a world, and has a vast army and resources, every so often he holds a competition on his world where mighty champions vie for the honour of creating an army and causing mayhem in the Imperium. Each defeated champions army joins that of the vanquisher until 1 stands with a vast army. To the victor Huron lends a portion of his army who then fight in his name.

So with those kinds of resources and the geneseed he stole from a loyalist chapter which were then doomed to extinction. Every warrior could be made to bend the knee and wear his colours, however recent inductees may still wear their own colours but defile the aquilla and cross out their chapter insignia in red until Huron could outfit them properly.

    Just my thoughts

Those are great thoughts, and I think the same. Right now I have a few Items I bought from Bunker and They are still in his original paint. For the time being I will put Red 'X' on them untill I get around to Painting them.

I think the best part is when I play that opponent and they see what has become to their unit. It is one thing to repaint them, but IT becomes a emotional playground when they see their unit defiled.

It would be nice to add other chapters to "bend a Knee" to my army.

One suggestion... if you aren't going to post pics of your completed models, you should make the world "complete" in each case link to the final picture of that model in your gallery, so people can quickly hit on the "completes" and see your work.

I have its set so that the side doors swing open and closed(when the lascannons are out of the way ) It still needs some paint and i still have to work on the little pieces.

I also have just recently bought a Redeemer/Crusader so I been thinking of magnetizing this one to take on those parts. I'd still need to find some reference material to do this, but that will be in time. then I should have an all in one LR.

    Thanks guys,

for the door I found this tutorial a long time ago (in my browsing days for a forum) but I never had the chance to use it because my Rhinos were already built. For my LR I deliberately didn't glue the top hull or the bottom tracks on, so that I could glue the wire hinges down. When I get home I take a pic of the wire hinge

here is the link of the tutorial:

Im not sure if you can see it in the photo but both the red and black, fade from dark to light. It is my first attempt at zenithal lighting. The black actually goes from pure black to 80:20 Hawk Turquoise and black.

On one of them I decided to keep the DCCW as is. I really like the paint job. It suits on-field repairs like it was stolen from a fresh wreak after a victory.

I got a bit of over-spray on the arm, so I will have to touch up the white.

I want to work on the Rhinos, Razorbacks and Predators that I bought from bunker, But I have more pressing units to fully paint. So in the meantime I want to put the Red Corsair "X" on the Hatches. Although if I do that the predators do not have hatches and I'm not sue what to do for that. I have 4 Rhino bodies. and i have 2 Predator kits, 2 Lascannon plasma Razorback kits, 2 heavy bolter Razorback kits. So these 4 Rhinos can be converted to my needs. So I decided to go to Photoshop.

    here is the original photo

This is the "X" on the top hatch

My other Idea is to put an "X" on the top. This way it can be seen when the Predator Kit is used.

Please let me know what you think and If you have any other Ideas.

So I had a game Sunday. I was against my rival. If this was wrestling then I would be the Heel and he would be the Baby Face. He started the hobby many years before I did, but never played a game until I joined. So any game I played was against him. Let’s just say it got boring and I got fed up with losing! I couldn't survive past turn 3, so I stop playing. I don’t mind being the Heel (someone has to be the bad guy), but want to be a challenge.

Then one day during my journeys through Dakka Dakka I posted a thread in the "Find a Game" forum Index called Toronto WH40K. I met many good players and played very entertaining games. Over time I have gained lots of knowledge and dumped the Chaos Codex. So a year later I challenged him to an 1850pts game (It was supposed to be 1750 but a typo made it 1850 lol)
He uses Space Marines. A chapter he calls Iron Fists, Loyal to the Emperor. I used my Red Corsairs Using the Space Wolves Codex. Loyal to the Tyrant of Badab.

Our game was a Capture and Control, Pitch battle deployment

The Iron Fist received reports of Pirate activity on a remote moon and was sent to investigate. Scout reports of the moon show the Red Corsairs responsible for the raid and Huron Blackheart himself was still on the moon. For the loyalist to crush the Red Corsairs once and for all they would need to capture two strategic buildings, the fortified stronghold in the area, currently occupied by 2 units of Red Corsair traitors, and a ruined building in order to cut off any retreat and capture Blackheart.

    Deployment:

The Red Corsairs deploy two units of Huron's Grey Hunters in Rhinos to defend the Fortified Tower. Two Units of Long Fangs enter separate buildings to gain higher firing ground. They are accompanied by a Lascannon/ TL plasmagun Razorback each. A Predator rolls beside one of these buildings to provide additional cover fire. While two more units of Grey Hunters in Rhinos one led by a Rune Priest advance towards the 2nd Strategic Building to ensure escape. Following these units is Huron Himself with his Wolf Guard in an assault cannon Razorback.

The Iron Fist's sent only two units of Space Marines, each with two Lascannons. One squad sent to fortify the ruined building objective. To prevent Huron’s escape they need to hold this building. The 2nd squad fortified another building to cover the stronghold. Both units combat squad and take separate floors of their buildings. The rest of the Iron Fists stay in reserve waiting for the rebels to make the first move.

    Turn One:

Long fangs spot the enemy, sending volleys of Frag Missiles and reducing their numbers which causes a unit to fall back. The Predator and Razorback provide cover fire as the Rune Priest and Units move flat out in open terrain towards the escape objective. Huron’s razorback moves safely behind this Rhino wall.

After regrouping, the Iron Fist units, greatly reduced in numbers, return fire. One Lascannon shot Pierces the Predator and causes it to explode. Another expertly aimed shot causes a Lascannon/ TL Plasmagun Razorback to explode as well leaving Huron’s Razorback flank exposed. Two more Lascannon Fire and his Razorback too explodes a long with two Wolf Guard and raided loot stored in the razorback.

    Turn Two:

Long Fangs Continue to deliver havoc to these units. The Rune Priest and units move towards objective. Huron and Guard Foot slog behind. The remaining Lascannon/TL plasmagun moves to cover Huron’s advance.

The Remaining Iron Fists reduced to 6 Space Marines rejoice when they see the reserves enter the battle field. A Land Raider followed by a Lascannon/TL Plasmagun Razorback, a Rhino, A Multimelta Attack bike and a rhino all outflank beside the Fortified Stronghold. The two Units of Grey Hunters are outnumbered and out gunned. The closest unit’s Rhino explodes and then is overwhelmed with gun fire and falls back and out of combat. One Multimelta Attack bike outflanks on the opposite side and a joint effort with the remaining lascannon Marines Immobilizes, and then wreaks the Rune Priest’s Rhino.

    Turn Three:

Huron’s guard fires bolt pistols then charges the Attack Bike and eventually Huron rips apart this biker with his own hands. The Rune Priest summons up the Living Lighting Spell Which destroys the remainder of a combat squad with a Lascannon. The other Grey Hunters disembark from their Rhino. They send Bolter Fire through the windows and walls of the second floor, wiping out all Iron Fist from the building. Thus securing the Objective. Long Fangs started firing their Krak missiles at any vehicles in sight. Unfortunately they did not make a dent. If anything all they did was slow them down.
Meanwhile on the other side of the battle field, as a last ditch effort, The Grey Hunters Forward their Rhino towards the Land raider. They disembark as close as they can pull out their Meltaguns, aim, fire … they only manage two glancing hits and the Land Raider is only stunned!

The Land Raider Front Assault doors open and out charges 5 Terminators led by Korsarro Khan. The last attempt of the Grey Hunters sent them in to the jaws of death. The Terminators made easy work of them. The two that lived fell back to fight another day. The only thing keeping the Iron Fists from this Stronghold is one Rhino.
More Iron Fist Reserves enter the battle field. A Razorback arrived on the side with the Stronghold and a Rhino with 6 Sternguard on the other side. These Sternguard and their combi weapons are the only unit close enough to stop Huron! They use their Combi-Flamers through the top hatch of their Rhino to burn down a units of grey Hunters, killing only two.

    Turn Four:

The unit of Grey Hunters returns fire with their Meltaguns and explode the Sternguard Rhino. In doing so they killed two sternguard and one Grey hunter. Now out in the open the squad of Sternguard was easy picking for Huron and Guard. Removing each of their heads.
The single Grey Hunter Rhino contesting the capture of the stronghold tries to tank shock the Terminators but they step aside and embark their Land raider as it blows apart that Rhino. The Iron Fist now controls the stronghold and succeeded in removing the pirate threat. Unfortunately they let escape the Tyrant of Badab along with most of the plunder from this moon.

    Turn Five:

Not much changes, there is nothing to stop the Red Corsairs escaping with the Plunder and a Red Corsair Razorback failed to contest the stronghold (1/2” before getting wreaked)

    Outcome: Draw

It was a pretty good game, I was able to last more than three turns and put up a good fight against him. I can’t wait till I Beat him. So bring it!!

So for that last game I needed alot of troops. 4 units of GH and all I had was 25-30 marines so I had to pull out my SW pack sprues and with other bits I was able to make 12 extra marines. Now since there are so many weapon options for SW I decided to magnetize the arms. I managed to get all 12 torsos magnetized, but only 6 sets of arms. so I kinda lucked out when playing. I lost enough marines that I didn't need the armless ones lol. But I did have the 6 on the board.

I'm not sure if anyone else has experence with Magnetized arms, but mine wasn't pleasent. The magnets are strong considering their size but manhandling them, causes a few arms to fall off. (mostly when removing them from the board when ur less carefull and sad). So I thought I lost an arm after cleaning up and spent half an hour searching. Normally i wouldn't care so much for a arm, but there is a magnet sticking it it! I found it after I got home and was unpacking my boxes. Turns out it stuck to another armless body.

I just got in the mail yesterday 2 more boxes of SW pack. yea thats another 20 SW to work on! Thats another 112 Heads!! I think I might glue a bunch of them together in a bloody mess objective marker. Huron's failed conversions or insentive.

I need to fig out if I want to Magnetize these too.

I do not have the codex in front of me so not 100% on this but pretty sure thats the rule.

If so your friend was runnng 2 illegal tac squads as you said they had 2 LC each

I think I might have made a mistake on the heavy weapons. They were 3 combat squads. the other halves were probably in the 2 razorbacks theat never disembarked, as for the third I have no Idea.

Suncrusher was the player, He just joined Dakka Dakka after this game. Maybe he can explain it better?

    For Huron I used:
    HQ: Huron Blackheart - complete
1 Wolf Lord in Power Armour, (Belt of Russ;Wolf Tail Talisman; Power Weapon x1; Powerfist x1)

No heavy flamer or Warp time tho
    I'm up for better suggestions.

Meh, no need to be impressed by me... I think you do great work, be impressed by that.

Yeah, some days things just don't pay out like they should, and it seems to me (as a purveyor of shooty armies) that shooting is more susceptible to dice failure than assault is. Might just be my perception but I have had monumental, army-wide shooting failures in 5th but hand-to-hand generally seems to be pretty reliable. (not that you always win, but things tend to perform as expected).

Without being able to see the board it's hard to give you any suggestions on how you might have dealt with the battle more effectively. I couldn't "see" anything in your description that sounded wrong, you just had one really bad turn of shooting early that put you behind the 8-ball from that point on. Nothing you can do about that.

But... there's always the next game!

Yeah styro got it a bit mixed up...I had a total of 3 tactical squads each of which had a lascannon. I deployed two combat squads into my objective and a second one directly across from his... the 3 lascannons that barely missed that game also ended up doing next to nothing the following game!

So on Sunday I managed to put together the 20 SW I got. I decided against magnetizing the arms for these guys. I have a total of 12 guys magnetized and I think thats enough. I can make them what ever is needed; Wolf Guard, Grey Hunters, Lone Wolf, and even a squad of blood claws(if I was ever to use them)
I hope to prime them this week

Now that I have way too many models and going overload. I now have 5 LR! 10 Rhino/Razorbacks, 3 Vindi, 5 predators, and 3 baal ones which i dont know what to do with. I dont know where to start. I have no interest in starting a new army... I really want to finish the first one. Maybe when I see more Complete's on the Original Post then i might consider it

I am lucky, but they need alot of work. again like the last time everything is glued. So I started freezing them and taking them apart.
All the red needs to be re-done and I'm not a fan of the black either.
Even been thinking of stripping them or just air brushing over it.
    alot of work

woot I just noticed that this is the 100th post for the Blog

Sorry, the stuff I do sell will be sold locally

    So I have some questions

I started this army as Chaos and with chaos you have CSM, Aspiring Champions and Chosen. You didn't really have to make them look too different. But now that I'm doing SW do I have to? Do i have to make it visably clear the Wolf Guard from Grey Hunters?

    If So:
I have been converting my Berzerkers and giving them a different colour scheme to become my Wolf Guard. I was proxying the Chain axes as Power weapons, but I dont think I can do that in tournements. I really like the work I've done on them. Should I try to rip off the arms and magnetize them for real power weapons?

But now after buying 20 SW and getting alot of troops from bunker, I can replace my berzerkers. I have magnetized 12 or so SW, that way I can switch out power weapons and stuff. These guys can be my Wolf Guard and they can also be plain marines. I'd like to keep these my normal paint scheme, but then you cant tell the differnece when I use them as Wolf Guard. Should I paint them my other scheme thus making them Wolf Guard only?

I also now have tons of bits. Is there certain shoulder pads or helmets to tell them apart? Most of them I dont even now which chapter they belong to.

    If not:
Then dumping the berzerkers and equiping the magnetized marines in power weapons should be enough, right?

Red Corsairs WIP (Tiger Claws Return from the Maelstrom) @ 2011/08/24 18:01:02

Yeah, the power weapons will make them stand out.

    Post by: dantay_xv

The difference between wolf units is shoulderpad design on the right shoulder, grey hunters generally are red and black, blood claw, sky claw and swift claw would be red and yellow, long fangs, black and white, thunderwolf cavalry, wolf guard are yellow and black. Wolf Lords... go nuts
The left shouder has great company design on it.

Otherwise they look the same, but you could do more detail work etc on the wolf guard to make them relly stand out.

The chain axes could be frost weapon, the chain section is krakens teeth etc frost weapons = power weapon with +1 strength, Power weapons would make them more identifiable however.

You could also use the wolf shaped helms from the sprue if you do not want bare heads

File off the bunny ears on the berzerkers and you have MK3 helms.

If you need a look at the codex let me know...

Thanks again for the help dantay. I like the frost weapon Idea.

Because these SW have sworn loyalty to Huron Blackheart and the Red Corsairs I dont think they would keep their ranking colours.
As a gaming standpoint I had one person mention that they couldn't tell the difference between my guys and that I should show, some how ,that they're different.

Here are my pics of the converted Berzerkers I did:

I like the way they turned out, I dont mind removing the arms and magnetized them. Its really up to how many come apart.

Or since I bought more SW guys and Magnetized them, it will be easier to use them for Wolf Guard. but only if I dont have to paint them different. I would like to paint them the same as my regular marines so I can switch back and forth.

( oooh just thought of something now ) I could always paint the shoulder pads on the magnetized power weapon arms different scheme (black like the berzerkers) and regular bolter arms the same scheme (Red).

Yes they do look good. The faces look suitably feral and the glow on the eye lens is nice.

I have never been completely sold on the head of the centre model, so never use it, but it looks suitably "regal" for a wolf guard, I might have to consider using them in future.

Hmm white pad for long fangs, yellow for claws, red for hunters and black for wolf guard. Would be a quick and easy way to tell the difference. Or possibly silver trim on the hunters and gold on the guard?

I think the chain axes look really lethal, but maybe give them a silver/ blue glow so they look energised maybe?

So if i was to paint it a glowy frost blue you think they can really pass off for frost weapons? and are they worth the points to take?

I have a friend who knows where to download the codexes for nada, i will see if i can get you the link.... I think they cost an extra 5 points more than standard power weapons.
As to whether they are worth it. Depends what they are hitting and also if they can reduce that to wound roll enough to justify the kills.
I think it will bump them to strength 5 from 4 so no instakilling going on from the strength, but it might make it easier to kill off stuff due to the power weapon effect bypassing armour.
Just paint the teeth wwith a light blue undercoat then a very very thin layer of mithril over the top and voila glowy blades.. the thin ness of the silver will allow the blue to peek through. YOu could even try some blue osl.

And yes it's the right pad, so the left would be free to add any icons etc you wish.

It might be worth finding legends of the Space Marines, atleast I think its that book. The first story is about Honsou fighting in a tournie arranged by the tyrant

I wanted to buy Vallejo Paints, mainly for the airbrush and I've been looking for Vallejo Model colour in Toronto for a long time now, to no succuss.
Two weeks ago after a game at a FLGS I saw them!! They just got them in, and I was really excited. Unfortunatly I forgot which paints I needed and as soon as I got home I got the comparision chart and wrote down what to buy. This FLGS is not as local as I'd like it to be, over an hour commute, so time passed by. Then the NEED hit again when I recieved Bunkers tanks. All that airbrushing! Excitement!
So friday I get off work early (1pm) and head to the FLGS. I get there and the place is closed! I was pissed! Two hours POOF, gone! I really wanted to paint this weekend. 'The Old Crow' is working both days, and that means paint-a-thon!
My buddy calls me up while on the way home, and envites me to goto Fan Expo. I've never been so I said sure since I'm not painting.

I had a good time a Fan Expo and after I decided to goto the FLGS for another shot at it. I'm half way there anyway. (for some reason it still took me an hour to get there) ... thank god it was open! I went crazy and bought $35 of paints. At GW thats about 3 pots, but Vallejo thats 10!!

    3 Bloody Red
    3 Gory Red
    1 Orange Fire
    1 Black
    1 White
    1 turquoise
    1 Dark green

Of course, The Old Battleaxe finished work so Saturday was a painting bust!

    Sunday!...
I set up the compressor, pulled out the air brush ... and spent the whole day painting. My hand were completely red (I really need to invest in some latex gloves). So I managed to paint 2 of bunkers primed only Rhinos and basecoat 25 marines before I called it a day.

I've taken some pics on my phone, but I forget it at home.
I'll post them as soo as I can

I still have to do detail work on this one. all the detaill work needs to be done on the other one.

I had 2 Really good games Today,

One was against Guis and his Orks (He must have the funniest Orks ever)

This game was Capture and Control but only went to 3 turns. I was too overwhelmed and surrendered. His Nob Bikers took out Huron and his Wolf Guard in one turn (I have never lost him in a battle before)

The second game I found more fun. it was Against Rythem and his BA. We had to end the game early on turn 3, at that point I won. If we continued I believe I still would have won or at least tied.

I cant wait to play them again

Glad you had a good time Styro. Nob bikers can be a real beast, that's for certain. If you don't have the right kind of stuff do deal with them they can go through an army like tissue paper.

Ya no kidding, I have no idea how to counter it. I dont have enough shooty and they reach you in 2 turns. He also had 2 trukks and a battle wagon. Do I just ignore that? Because those over ran me too and wiped out 2 units of GH.

Thanks Gits, That post is very usefull

For me though that means changes. Dreads and termies... Are they good in the SW codex?

I have to take 2 dreads for them to be usefull and/or drop pods.

Or Termies and a LR Redeemer?

I also need this list to be competitive against other armies too.
Where do I find the points?

Red Corsairs WIP (Tiger Claws Return from the Maelstrom) @ 2011/09/26 19:55:12

    Post by: Gitsplitta

Yeah, well... that's the rub isn't it?

You know that nob bikers and skull crushers are both integral to two very competitive builds... but at least with orks there are three other very competitive builds that don't use them (battle wagon spam, kan wall and horde). Not sure how many really competitive builds there are for the chaos dex... but I've had my a** handed to me by both units in my time. I'll be honest, I don't have a great answer for either though I'm a bit better off against the crushers with the dreads in my list. I have been tabled by turn two (twice) by ork bike lists (not my marines, but my ork army has).

The thing with the nob bikes is to physically stop them somehow (or at lest slow them down). I did this last Adepticon by using natural pinch-points in the terrain and sacrificing my razorbacks in order to stop their momentum. It worked... and it really limited their impact on the battle... but by the same token it cost me something too. So think about using your cheaper vehicles to block or delay death-star type units if you don't have an answer for them. (Pods are good for this too.) At lest that way the rest of your army can go about it's business unmolested.

    stop it!!!
Your making my Red Corsairs look like scrap!
I was just thinking about the fact that RCs are just space marines, so theres no real reason for daemons.
I'm getting a SM dreadnought beacuse it looks cooler and probably the type of dreadnought that Huron would have in his army.
    But none the less....

Alright Mr. Awesome! It took me 2 years to realize that the Red Corsairs are just Space Marines. If they ever come out with a renegade Codex then I'm all over that. In the meantime, I'll hide in the SW codex.

lol thank you, really though about your RCs, I'd add them to my army in a heartbeat. All I would do is give them a wash in Devlin Mud to add shadow and done... a very large Red Corasirs army

in the meantime, one of my marines has a trophy with the head of a tau on it but I dont have the paint for the ordinary tau army. So is there any substitution for the colour or a good scheme that look nice on the end of a spear?

thats not gonna happen as i dont know anyone who plays tau.........
i guess a light blue could do

I just had an epiphany about the Red Corsairs!
The RCs turned on the emperor and the Emperor disowned them. After Badab was lost, they fleed to the maelstrom, I have found no records that the chaos Gods have confronted the Red Corsairs so they act like pirates with no actual alliance with any faction.
This gives them no reson not to have vehicles, troops and anything else from another faction as you can say that they stole them from a raid or an attack. so you could use anything from a tau hammerhead to an Imperial Guard Baneblade. Yay!!!

Yes Sw termies are good as you can arm them in any way you wish, not just the standard SB & PF of other codex armies..... so you can go power weapon/rune weapon crazy and retain the initiative to strike first (orks are I3 i think), you acn throw in combi weapons too if you wish and for each 5 a special weapon (ass cannon h flamer cyclone) to suit your needs.

Wolf Guard are pretty good too able to take TH/SS without the termi armour so almost as survivable, just think sternguard but without the magic bullets, and a few more toys.

Dreads are similar to codex dreads, just no ironclads

I have been reading the Gildar Rift which is a Silver Skulls vs Red Corsairs battle book, very enlightening.

Seems those who were not Astral Claws to begin with do not automatically get the red armour but keep their own and deface/ mutilate the Aquilla's and deface their chapter sybols with red crosses, it mentions there being troops from the Imperial Fists Space Wolves White Scars and a few others.

I believe the effect is to dis hearten the other loyalists, that their brothers could fall... maybe wrong about that.

Anyhoo, I really like the way you are doing them Styro, I prefer the unified look you are doing, keep it up man. I am seriously impressed with the rhinos, especially the one with the damaged interior. Most people do not paint te interior and just glue the doors shut, yours look cool and kudos for going the extra mile

Thanks. That rhino was a test rhino, and I havent done it since. I havent' even finished that one. I still want to fence up the doors like a dog pen. Mark of the Wolf maybe? Fill them up with Wulfen?
I was thinking of taking one of the white Rhinos I have and do same thing but to the exterior. And I was even thinking of painting one rhino to match my friends army then deface it too. meh heh heh

I will take the other White Rhino and leave it but put the red 'X' . But I also don't want it to overwhelm the look either. I think a few mixed Tanks and Troops should be enough.

Right now I'm working on normal red ones, I seem to get alot of flak that my rhinos arnt red. I have started weathering them but I dont like how it turned out. Its way too easy to get carried away and overkill it too much. when I get home I'll post some pictures for opinions.

Soo Dantay when you finish that book, why dont you toss it over the pond my way lol

Lol, maybe, I think its not due for release yet, but I got it at GD UK.

Rather than just a red X how about scraping it up, and putting gouges where an aquilla would have been.... get a bit brutal with it.

After all they wouldnt just get a paint pot out and do a little graffiti, they would be showing how loyal they are by defacing and mutilating anything Imperial.... so get the scalpel out and start gouging.

Lovely weathering, and i really like the idea that the army is made up of many different forces with different colour schemes, just be careful in my opinion otherwise the whole thing might get too disjointed and not look like a single army

Which tread looks better the one with weathering or the one with out. TBH i cant really tell the difference.

Thanks young, I agree, I'm worried about it being disjointed too. I need to put that red "X" to unify it or something.

I have taken new photos of my army. I had to separate them because I didn't have enough space. These are of the pieces that I can use and/or willing to use. Not including in these picture are the 3 vindis, some LRs, 3 more Rhinos, unconverted berzerkers, and alot more marines.

    MY tanks:

    My troops:

Just looking at these pictures and I see i have alot of work to do. I have less the 10% of my troops painted and only 30% of them have heads!

Gitsplitta is right the racks are more likely to get weathered than the outside of the tank because they are in direct contact with the ground so i would defiantly weather the tracks, if you want everything to be muddy try sticking some modelling sand in the groves on the tanks and then paint that as well and that might help

    So I bought this thing

I bought it because I was having problems with the Vallejo paint I bought. For some reason the pigments doesn't mix well and it seperates in the pot, red in pacticular. I found shaking the bottles didn't do the trick.

I got it in the mail three weeks ago. and unfortunatly it was to big for the Vallejo pots

But i fixed that. I used my dremel and trimmed it down. I mixed a pot of Bloody Red with it. Normally it settles and seperates in a few hours, I looked at it the next morning and it was still mixed! I love it!

Three weeks later its still mixed!!

I also went through my GW pots mostly the ones that were drying up. I added a few drops of reducer and poped in the mixer and the paint is as good as new. I wish I had this thing a few years ado whould have saved me alot of money. Works on metalic paint too. My boltgun metal was very thick and not eay to paint with it. Ive tried adding water or reducer and shaking it or stiring with a tooth pick but it time it got thick again.

So i will see how long it lasts *fingers crossed*

    Thanks Guys,

I'm at a point where I'm not sure how I want to proceed. When I First started my SW I didn't really have many troop models. So I started converting Berzerkers to wolf guard. Through trades I now have plenty of troops. So I started magnetizing some arms on 12 of my guys so that I can make different combos for my wolf guard. dantay_xv gave me a suggestion of just painting the shoulder pads different. That way if I need more Wolf guard or a plain Grey hunter i can switch it easy.

    Wolf Guard = Black pad
    Grey Hunter = Red pad
    Claws = Yellow Pad
    Long Fang = White

So this was my test model for the new Wolf Guard:

The only difference in the colour scheme is the shoulder pad it is black.

but this guys colour scheme is reversed

So I'm at a loss for I like both of them. One can be Interchangeable which is really cool but the other strands out better

I love the claw but I'm not a fan of the shoulder on it. I might use the square dread shoulder and somehow attach it to this.

For the civil war heads I only reall got them for the one in the cowboy hat. I think it would look amazing on power armour

The warewolf heads... mark of the wolf maybe... wulfen?!

    Thanks Mr.

I always thought it was mixed up and random, But I kept mine unified. Red with black trim. Only reciently that I decided to make the right shoulder pad changeable based one status, Grey Hunter, Wolf guard, Long fang, etc. based on this conversation with Dantay
    http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/90/349389.page#3246909

The left shoulder pad is for the Astral Claws symbol (If i ever get the Decals lol) which is the black claw on red shoulder

I never thought of that. I just gloss the red because i find the Air Brush paint too thin and I have a tendency to scratch it off. I also find that a gloss surface is easier to add washes to.

One of the airbrushing tuts that I've found on the web talks about spraying on a satin varnish before you try your wash as it really channels the wash into the recesses nicely. I don't do it as a matter of course... but then I often use my washes not only to enhance the crevices but to stain the overall color of the base paint. No question the satin varnish does help to make the wash flow nicely.

    Thanks,
I have a tendency to paint the heads last, mostly because I dont know what head i like per model

So yesterday I managed to work on the werewolf head. I gave it some character. The original look of the head was a bit scary and primal, so when i tac the head on a marine it looked out of place. 'why is a beast holding a bolter?' So I tried to give the head the look of intellengence. while doing it I kept thinking of Wolfman Jack, the wolfman from the hilarious house of frightenstein and alittle bit of beast from Xmen.

    "Awooooooooooooooooooooo... Werewolf!"

Clap for the Wolfman - by The Who

Magnetize or pin them so you can trade them out as you wish. (perhaps leave the human head until his first kill)

Thanks Gits that sounds like a good Idea. I can picture it now during a game. He jumps out of a Rhino and charges in to combat and transforms into a werwolf and uses his D6 attacks Awooooo
(but I think that might upset a few WYSIWYG players)

I think I'd mostly want to know if it works. What do most SW players use for Wulfen? links, photos?
Should I give him wolf hands?

Ha Ha I didn't see that until just now. Brother Lemmy

It's funny that you should say it fits the fluff. I posted this on another forum and I got:
"I just dont see how either head makes sense O.o "
I started doubting my decision, But now I think its a matter of him looking at the pretty pictures and not reading the actual posts before commenting. Thanks. Bring on the Wolfman!

SO i had an amazing game on Friday. It was a real nail bitter.

A co-worker and I decided after work to have a quick game. We have never played each other before and we get of early on fridays, so why not.
He plays IG and the last time I played IG was with my Chaos and I got wiped out. So with some help from More Dakka I came up with this list (mind you its not too different from my normal list)

    HQ:
Rune Priest, Living lighting, Storm Caller

    Troops:
9 Grey Hunters, 1 plasmagun, Rhino
10 Grey Hunters, 2 plasmaguns, Rhino
10 Grey Hunters, 2 Meltaguns, Rhino
10 Grey Hunters, 2 Meltaguns, Rhino

    Heavy:
6 Long Fangs, 5 Missile Launchers, 1 Seargent, Las/Plas Razorback
6 Long Fangs, 5 Missile Launchers, 1 Seargent, Las/Plas Razorback
6 Long Fangs, 5 Missile Launchers, 1 Seargent, Las/Plas Razorback

    1500pts on the button

He had around 7-8 Chimeras with alot of squishy guys inside. 4 armoured Sentinels and 2 Manicores. including hunterkiller missiles, grenade launchers he must of 20+ missile spam.

Unfortunetly I took no pictures I forgot.

For terrain setup we had 6 ruined buildings one hill and one swamp forest thing. some how we managed to setup the buildings in a 3x 2 formation mostly on one side of the board a players long edge and the other players long edge only had the hill and the swamp thingy.

    --------------
    S______H
    _B__B_B
    _B___B_B
    --------------

    B=building, S=swamp, H=hill

Then we rolled Seized Gound and Pitched Battle, with 3 objectives. oddly enough the 3 objectives where place on the empty side. My buddy and his IG got first turn. His choices for side were insane amount of cover for his gunline, but then he would have to advance on to the ojectives that I would be sitting on. Or he could himself sit on the objectives and just shoot everyturn.

He chose to sit on the objectives. He created a wall of cover for his Manicores with his chimeras. His Sentinels on both flanks.
I put my Long Fangs in or near the 3 buildings the best i could. I used the razorbacks for addition cover but also keeping them spaced out(worrying about those barrage atttacks). My Rhinos, I deployed 2 on each flank matching the sentinels. one of each meltas and plasmas.

Boy was I terrified of the first barrage attack.

The game about to start when he reminded me about sieze initiative... and I rolled a 6!!!
That my friend changed the game entirely I actually have a chance.

So I moved all my tanks, the Razorback only 6" and the Rhinos all 12". I left my Long Fangs where they were even the ones not directly in cover. I had about 20%-30% line of sight to the Manicores and I took it. I managed to stun one and shaken the other. That was good enough for me, the rest of the shooting phase was concentrated on clearing out the cover in front of the manicores. I managed to explode a few and wreak others but it wasn't enough for clear view. I popped smoke on all my Rhinos. My rolls were amazing!

His first turn he had to change tactics due to the advancing Rhinos and the fact that he could not fire the manicors. My Rhinos were set up to the point where he couldn't concentrate fire. aslo the fact I had 3 Las/Plas Razorbacks almost in full firing range. So he ignored my Long Fangs and fired his 20+ missiles at the closer threats.
Now i seem to not remember exactly what i lost in the first turn but it wasn't alot. Maybe 2 razors (or I lost one in the first turn and another in the 2nd), the third kept getting shaken results. I lost one melta rhino (wreaked) and i think one stunned

In my second turn My greatest threat were the Sentinels there was no way i could afford to any unit tied down in CC (should have taken a WG w/ fist) so i concentated fire on them, with not much luck. only managed to Explode one on each side. and thats even after disembarking my other Melta unit.
    Manicores untouched

Here come the pain. He was firing all over the place. I lost some Long Fang sergents, my HQ's rhino. I think that 2nd Razorback, the 3rd shaken again. The he pulled out the big guns. he droped the manicore pie plate right over my rune priest's head, who were stuck in a creater. I lost half that squad and some from the melta squad nearby. The other shot when over the opposite side over the other melta unit it only caused 1 death but they got pinned and it caused damage to both rhinos

my next turn i was in a pretty pickle. I had to stop those manicores again. I managed stun them both again. Again I tried to take out the sentinels. I failed completly on the one on the right. the on on the left i managed to stun.

in his shooting phase (so many guys that can shoot) he concentrated on my last razorback because it was getting close and on some of the long fangs. I lost afew LF from each unit but they stuck in there. and lost the lascannon on then razor. he put out of his mind the advansing SW troops on the right because of CC . he didnt want to lose the range with his sentinel and he was on difficult terrain. there was nothing the other sentinal could do. so that ended the shooting phase.
then hes says "ok thats it for my turn"

I feel bad because he forgot to move his sentinel into assault. I didn't remind him and i said "Is it my turn now?" and he responded yes and I took to moving my stuff. then i moved the unit he was going to assault. and thats when he remembered. He asked to redo it and after discussing it and felling bad i said fine. but then he didnt want it if i felt bad about it. so we rolled on it. and it ended in my favor. If i was locked in combat there i would have very little chance to get out of it.

I managed to destroy the sentinel and immobolized the other.l I weaked one of the manicores and some chimeras. I moved the plasma unit on the left around the immobilized sentinel towards the objective.

His turn the remaining manicore shoots again but i dont remember what it hit a unit from a immoblized chimera shoots flash lights at me killing 5 Grey Hunters from my melta unit. I only have 4 guys left in that unit. he advance a unit of 2 towards the middle objective

In turn Five. I need to clear out these objectives. I move my recently pinned melta unit twards the center objective but im out of range but I shoot the unit of 2 and kill one only. then i move a repaired rhino into 3" of the same objective and kill the last guy. my two now half strength units on the right take out the squad of flashlights and wreak its immobilzed chimera. there are 2 guys 7"or 8" away so i try to shoot it with every thing i can to secure this objective. ... not one single wound!! not one!
On the right my plasma squad moves into 3" of the 3rd objective. there is no way i can take this one because of the immobilized sentinel and a Chimera with a unit in it close by. In a last ditch effort i use Livinig Lighting on the side armor of the ramaining maniacore... boom explodes!
so as it stand in the top of turn 5:
I captured one objective and contest the other 2 ... i got this! if his 2 guys that are 8" away dont roll a good terrain check .. I win!!

he rolls the dice (my nails all chewed up)... and he rolls ... a 5 CRAP! its ok that means its a tie no worries it was a good game i can deal with a tie

Anyway he continues his turn. He moves his HQ unit toward my rhino thats contesting the middle objective. He cant capture it either. Then out of the blue he decides to tank shock my plasma unit on the contesting objective and dont you know it, .... I fail the leadership and run away no longer contesting..

    Bottom of 5th:
he controls one objective and contests the other two

    He wins, How?!

So both of us are to scared to roll to see if we get a next turn, so we got a spectator to roll for us. Both of us watching as the die flies in the air. I'm praying for another turn he praying for end game!!

...and thank the 40k gods Turn 6!!

i carefull try kill the 2 guys contesting the objective but only manage one in the shooting phase. I repair the orher rhino and move it to contest the objective where my guys ran from. and my guys flee some more. my melta squad move towards the middle objective. I decide to take a risk by shooting the living lighting from the right side of the board to the centre to kill the HQ guys contesting. Because at the same time this stops me from shooting the remaining guy sitting right in front of the rune priest. I have only 4 marines there and I'm taking a risk, and hoping that they can kill one guy in CC alone. So I roll the Living Lighting and get only one attack and kill only one guy. oh well.

Assault: My four guys manage to kill that one guy so the risk still paid off. My melta squad charges the HQ squad and wipes them out.

Top of turn 6: I control 2 objectives and contest one.

His chimera and remaining sentinal wreak my Rhino. Its now 2 objectives for me to his 1. He tries everything to kill my guys on then middle objective. He kills a few but not enough.

I win the game! a very good game.

After the game he realized what he could have done. instead of rapid fireing me he could have assaulted that last unit and that would force me to pile in. and doing so would pull me off the objective, for the tie.

it was a very good game.

I'll prolly have to do some editing but i need to rest my eyes a bit.

That's a question for someone more steeped in Imperial lore than I am. I'd always assumed that a purity seal had to be issued by some credible authority... like the inquisition or some such. Not sure though.

So I've decided to finish the Cavalry Hat guy Instead. Mostly because he's nearly finished. So I glued down his head, I tried my luck on the power weapon and OSL. Then I glued down some sand. While waiting for the pva glue to dry I started on another guy. My hands were all over the place, I kept making mistakes, so it was a good sign for me to stop, but i didn't!
And I forgot that the Cavalry Hat guy was still drying and I started to paint some details I noticed. Of course I touched the sand with my thumb and wreaked it spreading gluey sand on the model. That sould have been the second sign!
After fixing it, I decide to take photos and while setting up I dropped him on the floor and he fell apart

I picked up the pieces and ... turned off the lights. Thats enough.

So its time to unveil My first installment of my model of the month...

This is my first time with OSL, so please any tips/comments are very welcome.

Few things first, a while ago I bent the tip of my needle and the Fluid Nozzle. I straighten it as much as possible, but according to these pictures i'm getting alot of splatter. Looks like I have to buy new parts. I also learned another thing from these pictures... wear clean rubber gloves. I used the same gloves that I used to paint the red a while ago, and now I see flecks of red on the model. This was easily brushed off but I didn't bother retaking the photos

    Again C&C are welcome

There... see?? All that angst and you ended up turning out a fantastic looking model!

I am constantly bending needle tips... and I have no idea how as I am *very* careful with my airbrush. I think the end of the needle is so small that gravity pulls it down!

In any case, I try to straighten them as best I can too... but eventually I end up having to replace the needle.

Beautiful conversions and excellent paint! Quite the daunting task to bring all this up to the level you are striving for but everything you've finished so far is excellent and looking great! I really like how you paint flesh / faces, so vibrant and full of character! I'm jealous of the Power Maul you did, I tried for a similar look w/ a model I painted and fell short (but I'm lazy and always looking for the quick way out, so whatever )

I absolutely AM subbed now and I will be back for more updates!

Thanks guys, Its been kinda lonely here. If it wasn't for Gits I would probably have lost all motavation.

    @Skalk Bloodaxe
Thanks It is quite daunting, But I keep striving to learn new things and to better meyself. One day i hope to put it all together in to my work. So far everthing i have done is been mostly test out this technique ... okay that worked now try this one. Its one of the reasons why I haven't finished anything.

That and my very short attention span

I really wish I knew what I was doing when I do faces(everytime I type "faces" I think of poo). Each time I end up with different results. Some turn out great and other ...uggh.
But hey I guess that goes for people too.Everyone's different.

The Power maul was my first attempt at it, And I found it very hard to control the Airbrush for that small of a piece. Some of the guys out there make it look so easy. psssfft done! I made sure that I coated the marine in a gloss coat because I had to use alcohol and a brush to strip it back down, everytime I blotched it up.

This guy here is my very first Power Weapon, 3-4 years ago

I haven't really done one since, until now that is.

So I got some work done. But I'm still not finished. I worked on the shoulder pads and the backpack. Basecoated the chainswordand gave it a wash. painted all the gold.
All I have left to do is paint the bone, fix and touch up, base him, and give him a coat of satin varnish. as Mr.Awesome pointed I have one extra day, with out it I dont think I could do it.

    Anyway here are the pictures

This guys arms are magnetized. So if I get time I would like to paint other options for him. Most likely Worlf Guard options.

    C&C are welcome

    I'll take pictures tonight

Hey, this is pretty inspirational. I like how you are getting a model done each month even with everything else you've got going on. You are certainly putting me to shame.

Keep it up, its good work and I'm looking forward to seeing Jans Febs and Marchs models altogther.

    Thanks c9805222
It is hard to find time, one model a month means I will only finish 12 models. But in the last few years I have only finished 2 models. I guess it's only one model now. Mr February is in pieces And even then they were only completed because of the Model of the month.

I love the hobby and I'm just glad that Dakka Dakka was not blocked at work, because I dont think I would continue otherwise. There is alot of inspiration in these forums and tons of resources to learn from. The reading here is also a good distraction from work, but on the otherside, when I get home I have Way too many distractions to do much of the hobby.

Soo 12 models in one year is big... Maybe I'll make a calendar!

Anyway So for March I have some work cut out for me. I need to re-base Mr Feb. and glue him back together. Touch up any paint and them finish a new model by the 31st. I guess that sounds easy to most.

Hey styro, have you considered a little bit of edge highlighting on the black? I'm thinking just the upper edges of the lightening claws, skull and pad edge. Might make the black pop as nicely as the red does.

Pretty much. I bought a squad of SW pack to add to my Chaos. I created a Rhino that was a converted SW rhino and it was repainted and scratched up in the interior by wolf claws. I planned on having a 10 man squad called Huron's Wolves. The rest of the 64 heads in the box would be used as bloody trophies all over the Rhino as incouragement or punshment for failure.

But now my entire army is SW so I get to use those heads

    @Gitsplitta
Side by side they are darker then my new stuff, but pretty close to my Old Chaos ones. I'll take some pics of them together. My only nitpick is the helmets should be black. It's no big deal, it kinda seperates them as a unit. On the other hand it makes it difficult to swap guys... So My question for everyone is to re-paint or not re-paint? Should I re-do the helmets?

    @Chemical Cutthroat
Thanks for the comments. I think the green could use a wash to darken it.

In general what to people thing of "green" seals on the red. So far I have been leaving them black or red because I dont know what to do with them. They dont have to be Purity seals, more like loyalty seals.

So just when I finished highlighting the black on Mr. March, my attention left the model and I started something else.

...I started creating a mould for the Red Corsairs symbol I created for the top hatch of my Black Rhino.

I hope to pour the Rubber tonight before I lose interest. I'll remember to take pictures too

Being an expert on Green Purity Seals and the conflict that comes from them... (no really)

They look awesome and you should totally do it. You just should make them darker. The problem you're going to have is that your Marines are Red, so if you have that green and red you risk Christmas Territory. And 40K only has room for one God Emperor amiright?

An option I've seen for Red has been a purplish tone, or even a rich yellow. I for one, like yellow purity seals, they look neat on certain models.

So I got alot done on Saturday. Although, none of it was for Mr. March. I managed to get some casting done.

So on Thursday, I created the mould and I promised you all pics

As soon as I got home on Friday I poured the rubber, 6 hours later this popped out:

I spent all day Saturday casting (well most of the day, the evening was spent at a pub and having some green beer for St Pattys Day)
I did about 6 casts and only 3 of them turned out. Due to bubbles and bad mixes. The three that did come out needed to be cut out and trimed. The came out a little thicker then the orginal so they needed to be sanded down
and i got 3 of these:

    Next to the orginal:

It was very time consuming but I feel it was still faster then cutting them out of plasticard

You know Styro... I look at that and I think to myself... "It needs more "pop"." But then I look at your finished figures and they pop just fine.

My only comment then is that the red is showing through in places on the jets of your back pack, clip of the bolter and tip of the muzzle of the combi-melta.

Yes, I have come to loathe macro-photogrophy. Primarily because there are some things that are just so minuscule that there's no way I'm going to waste my time fixing them... then I have to fix them because TFG (in most cases... it's ME) sees it on the close-up photo.

I had a great game on Sunday against Dark Eldar Elite. I have never played Dark Eldar before and DE Elite was very helpful. While playing he gave detailed information on each unit and even told me which was a greater threat. He is very forgiving and stern. He is a new player himself. So when I made mistakes he would tell me about it and let it go. On the otherhand when I would let his mistakes go, he wouldn't allow it. (trying to learn from his mistakes) Which made me feel crappy about it.

Anyway, He won first turn, and decided to go second. It was Capture and control and spearhead. He kinda told me he was putting everything in reserve. Since I knew ahead of time I deployed differently. I put one unit of Long Fangs on top of my bunker Objective and the other two Long Fangs I put in their Las/Plas Razorbacks (which I never do). I knew I had 2 free turns of movement. I placed 2 Rhinos and 1 Heavy Bolter Razorback as close to the edge of my deployment for max distence. In both of them were 8 Grey Hunters with Melta and a Wolf Guard with Combi-Melta and a Power Fist. The HB razorback was amy power ball of 5 Wolf Guard all with Power Weapons and Huron Blackheart (Wolf Lord, Power Weapon and Power Fist and Runic armour). I also deployed another 2 Grey hunter Rhinos. One of these Rhinos had a Rune Priest. these two I camped by my objective.

First and Second Turn, Very straight forward. I moved my Long Fangs razors towards terrain and deployed them in cover. The two Rhinos and HB Razorback went all out to get in range of his Objective
Unfortunetly I dont know much about Dark Eldar to really complete a detailed BatRep. I can give you the jist of it. He brought in a transport and a unit of witches. The transport hid behind a bunker and the witches behind his objective. He shot at my Long Fangs and I lost the sargent.

Turn Three, I got my three units in 3" range of the objective, I lined up a Las/plas Razor to shoot the Witches (but I forgot about it in the shooting phase) My long fangs returned fire on the transport and wreaked it. Some Dark Eldar guys came out all of them had Power Weapons. I shot some Frag Grenades at them, 9 hits but only Killed only one or 2
He deployed a cool black jet thing with lots of guns and missiles. a monsterious creature thing, a little skimmer thing that had 5 guys in it and I think 10 regular guys walked on the table and another transport. He wreaked Hurons razorback. They Disembarked out the rear in cover. He then wreaked the Rhino Next to it. He also wiped out a squad of long fangs.

Turn Four, I exploded the jet thing, wounded the monsteriuos creature thing, shot Krak Grenades this time at the power weapon guys killing 2 more. i move my ramianing Grey Hunter Rhino thats near his objective towards the transport. I disembark and shoot everything at it. my meltas were 1/2" out of range, and the bolters only got a cant shoot result. Im not sure what else i got.
He brought in another jet(placed in in the crater of the first one...taboo), some wing things. I think at this point he gave up thinking of capturing my objective. He was going to skim accross for the contest. His main concern was getting these damn Grey Hunters off his objective. His jet thing shot eveything at my long fangs leaving one ML to remain (passed leadership at the end of shooting). He weapon's destroyed one of my Las/Plas Razors(yay Bumper car). My rhino-less Grey Hunters get shot at and assaulted by the monster. But I kill it in the assault 5 marines remain in this squad. A squad disembark out of the transport lead by Lelith(bad a$$). They multi-assault my Grey hunters and Huron's Unit of Wolf Guard. Lelith had like 11 attacks, and her squad had alot of attacks too. I lost all the grey hunters in that squad and left behind a Wolf Guard. Huron's unit brushed off all attacks. I return by killing only four guys. I lost the assault. The lone Wolf Guard passed the Ld save, but Huron Fails. I also lose the initiative test. and had to take 3 wounds. I lose 2 of them.

Turn 5. Not looking good for me on his side, I need re-enforcements! I move my Rune priest Rhino 12" and disembark the Rune Priest. I use living lighting on the witches sitting on his objective and with the help of pistol fire from the 5 Grey hunters I cause them to retreat off the table.
Soo the funniest part of the game. my Lone ML Long Fang decides to shoot at the black jet in the crater. DE Elite says to me if you wreak this i will jump over the table! ... I roll a 6 on the damage chart .... and he runs around the table and playfully checks me into the wall. We laugh then remember that it was a glancing hit so it was only immobilized.
My full squad of Long fangs sitting safe on my objective split fire 3 shots into the jet to finish the job. The other two shots go on the advancing power weapon unit and kill 2 of them.
My assault phase didn't go too well. I lost it again. Lelith over killed my remaining Wolf guard(in the Grey Hunter unit) with 10 attacks. Huron gets a wound and I lose a power weapon Wolf guard.
Last ditch effort He skims across the table to my objective but is 10" short. His power weapon unit also moves toward my objective. If he rolls a 6 for running then he contests... thankfully he rolls a 1. His assault phase Lelith is not Base to base with Huron so all her attack are agains the remaining 2 Wolf Guard who of course DIE. He has 2 reamining guys with regular weapons and Huron only needs 2+ saves and I roll a 1!...I'm just glad he has 1 would left.
End of fifth turn. I hold strong to my objective, and Huron and an empty rhino contest his. If the game ends now I win. If it continues, Huron dies... rhino explodes ....and the reinforcements dont make it. For the Tie.

I ask DE Elite so do you want someone else to roll the die for next turn... his reply was "I take fate into my own hands" ..... He rolls a 2 ...Game Over... for the win.. really good game.

Edit: I changed "DEE" to "DE Elite"

Wow that mould is brilliant! It makes me want to do something like that for my RCs because I really suck at larger icons. How did you do the original icon?

I cut it out of plasticard...It took forever!! I'm really glad the mould worked out. There is no way I'm cutting that much detail out of Plasticard again.

I got some painting done on Mr. March. But I kept messing up. so I called it quits. So today I will have to fix them and get painting. I predict that I will finish painting the marine and base him...but he wont have a head.

    I messed up Mr. March!!
He was all finished and looked pretty... Then I decided to try weathering on the fist. and I ruined it it looks like garbage! Im not sure how to fix it. I think i have to strip it. I took pictures but Im ashamed . I didn't bother uploading them. I also took pictures of different heads but the light was off and I guess they been sitting too long and have a bit of dust on them....they look like crap too.

No Mr. March ... I failed, I lasted over 2 months.... how many New Years resolutions last that long?

So I guess its back to my old habbits of starting things and not finishing them. I been wanting to do something new anyway.

I been Looking at terraclips and Im really considering buying a kit to two. and play some D&D.

I just want to start off by saying sorry for considering leaving the hobby. I ended up going on vacation and When I got back I wanted to game again. I had a few games, and I am going to stick with it.

So yesterday ... I think I made a mistake. While searching on Kijiji I impulse bought an army of Grey knights. I dont know why. I just sent him an offer and picked them up within a hew hours.

    I got a DraigoWing Army:

    2 dreadknights
    20 Terminators
    1 Draigo
    1 Librarian
2 Dreadnoughts with forgeworld twin autocannons

As most of you know I can never finish a project. So I'm not sure what to do with this

    Should I keep it...
  • Think of a way to put it in the Red Corsairs
  • Have a Grey Knights aremy
  • Create a new army with them like the Astral Claws(if possible)
  • ...or do I Just Re-sell it

So confused. I know I really dont have the time for it. But it was a great deal and they are pretty

I'll take photos when I get home

I'm going to go out on a limb and hope that you accept truth with some grace.

Why did you put a considerable amount of money into something you're not entirely sure about? From my perspective, it seems you're still a little confused about continuing with the hobby. Take a break for a few months and see if the itch is still there towards the end of the year? Keep the GK until then; decide what to do with them when you know what you'll be doing with the hobby. I say this in the hope of saving yo' mind and your wallety.

    Thanks for the hard truth.

I dont know why I bought it. I thinks its the addiction... Plastic Crack!

Most of my problems with continuing the hobby, is not money, ...It's time. between work and the 'Ol Lady, I can barely sit down.
Space is also an Issue. reciently my Sister moved in and took my office. So right now my hobby area is in the living room.

I just been frustrated and I Thought of giving up on it. ...But I love it, the painting relaxes me and gaming new players is tons of fun. But I have no idea how some people find the time.

On top of all this Im picking up Diablo 3 after work!! No idea how Im going to find time for that either lol

Having a lady and work is problematic, at least. It is entirely possible to make time though, plenty on Dakka do. You've got to find the time, organise and make it happen. Maybe speak with your lady? Suggest to her that you'd like to be free to spend an evening or so dedicated to the hobby each month//week//depending on how lenient she is. Got a local gaming club? Maybe head down on there for your free evening, play a couple of games, do some painting, a couple of beers and have some fun. Everyone is eligible for a few hours of /me/ time - irregardless of how hard or busy one's schedule is. It just ain't healthy otherwise...

As it stands, you'll be banging your head against a wall for some time to come until you make the free time happen. You'll feel much better, I reckon, if you manage to find one evening a month even for the hobby. Something to look forward to, right?

or I could quit my job and Dump the 'Ol Crow.

Kidding aside, your right. I do Make time for gaming, once or twice a month. But i havn't thought of that for the hobby part. I'll see how it goes. Maybe I can get back on the model a month thing I had going.

As for the GK Im still at a loss?

Cool beans. Then make something special of it, dude. Find some local players and have a game or two with a beer and food!

Save the GK, I guess? Come back to them later down the pipe. If you still don't dig them, sell them.

    Consider this Styro...

If money is not your problem, would you consider hiring someone else to paint your GK's? That way your red corsairs stay "your special project", but you get another nice looking army to play with. You could probably have it done unit by unit so the entire cost didn't hit you all at once... and you'd have a nice looking, competitive army to play with while you were working on your RCs.

I'm still on the fence about them, I got them because they were a good price. I could sell them and make a profit.

Or keep them. Sink more money and/or time into them. I dont have the Codex and i know nothing about them.

At first i was hoping to add them to my RCs, but i dont think thats an option.
Then I thought I could make them Astral Claws, Using the GK codex, but they look so advance and the Dread Knights wouldn't fit the fluff.

Painting scheme for grey knights is pretty simple. I could just spray them and sell or keep them.

are they a worth while army? i dont see many posts on them. is there a reason?

The DriagoWing is pretty well known and competitive to a point. I don't think it's considered a "top list", but I think it's certainly considered "competitive".

Then again I'm probably not the best person to ask...

Now that i look at it after a nice vacation in Mexico and a break from the hobby for a month. It's not that bad and fixible.

I think I give it a try tonight.

Any one interested in following the Grey Knight I created a Blog with a nice poll on what to do with them here:

Oh ya, I just noticed the seal needs to be done too. What did everyone think about the green seals? or should I just make them red?

    C&C welcome

Came here for the RC update, but saw the GK dilemma and am going to offer my own opinion. Then I'll rave about the new RC stuff you posted.

I've been involved in this hobby for a very long time, and I've suffered from the same "plastic crack" addiction. You can read about the horror and my eventual triumph here if you want (scroll down to my most recent update).

If you want the short version, my advice is to take a break from absolutely everything for a while. No painting, no playing, no eBay, no anywhere else, no Dakka... and then head back to your hobby table. Take a long and hard look at everything. Figure out how old you are and how much time you may have left before you die. Then figure out (based on current data) how long it would take you to paint absolutely everything you own right now, w/o ever buying another thing. If your answer is "dead for 20 years before you get 1/2 of it done" then my recommendation is to pick the things you are genuinely connected to and let the rest go.

It's a brutal thing to think about, but the truth is that even if you have an unlimted cashflow, you have a finite amount of time. Quality or quantity? And if you keep going, who is going to be responsible for cleaning up all this stuff for your estate sale? Harsh words perhaps, but a sobering way to focus on what you truly want to do.

I have a friend that has Plastic Crack addiction coupled with "Newest Codex Release" syndrome. At this rate his kids are going to have to hire a backhoe and dump truck when he kicks off. Don't do that to yourself. Less truly is more sometimes, and this is a great example of that.

    *steps off soapbox*

Fantastic job on that model! I especially like the fading on the fur, it's very well done. The flesh tones you get are amazing as well. Really enjoying this thread and glad to see you're going to keep it going.

That is the funniest yet insiteful response I have ever seen.

    Lets do the math:
  • I plan to live forever

  • My RCs should take me forever to finish

  • These GKs might take 6 months to finish with my air brush

  • Therefore
    My RCs alone: Forever=Forever
My RCs and GKs: Forever+6 months=

Maybe I shouldn't metion that I want Tau as well

Thanks for the comments on My RC, I hope that yopu live forever as well so you can continue to follow this thread.

ROTFL I dint think that could get any funnier!

Im throwing that in my sig as well

    Update:
So ever since I got those grey knights, I haven't been able to put the brush down. Not a drop of it was on the Grey Knights, but surprising on my RCs.

I started by buying paint for the GKs Vajello Model Air Gun Metal and Silver. While in the model shop "Hornet Hobbies" I picked up 5mm masking tape. (over priced and an impuse buy)

Almost as soon as I got home I started on my RCs. I masked off 2 rhino top hatches(the red ones) and started spraying them painting the black boarder. I trying to recreate the black top hatch that I did a while back which matches my Avatar photo. After the first coat dried I re masked them and painted the thin black inner box.

photos will come like i said I couldn't put the brush down.

Maybe I should wait to finish this update until after I have pictures. I have alot to write and i think pictures will save time.

I've been doing RCs for years now and I am starting to get tired of red, so I decided that I was going to start another chapter to give more variety and colour to my army. And thus began my work on a world eaters army. So now I have a dark red army and a bright red army! From what I have experienced, starting a new army when you start to lose intrest in the hobby makes you want to paint and play more.
