[spoiler]Hi

I thought I'd start a blog here as the other forum I'm with seems to have no interest for my Thousand Son's army.

A quick bit about me, I've just decided to return to the war gaming hobby after an 18 year break and these are my first painted miniatures apart from my test marine who is in counselling at the moment!

The army will be based on an ice planet hence the cold look to the bases, I do have plans to branch out into the other chaos goods at some point when I need a break from painting blue Marines.

This is my latest Raptor Sargent which I would be grateful on feed back on before I paint the other members of the squad.

Now going back wards through the other painted miniatures.

This is Ezekiel once of the Dark Angels, now fallen to the temptation of Tzeentch.

This is my Havoc squad the first painted unit in a very long time.

Thanks for looking

Nice stuff! The use of sang guard parts is very effective with this army and gives it a new flavour that many csm armies are lacking.

Keep up the good work!

Awesome concept!

May I suggest a alternative recipe for gold?

1st = 50:50 mix of Mithril Silver & Macharius Solar Orange & a little water to help the mix (shake very well) - Apply as a base coat.
2nd = Fine highlights of neat Mithril Silver
3rd = Generous coat of Gryphonne Sepia

It's a really simple method but I'm happy with my results, try on a test piece but feel free to ignore I won't take offence.

Keep the pics coming!

Yeah the heads will add a bit onto the price of the army but they will look much better, good luck with the plasticard idea I'm really bad at modelling so wouldnt even attempt that.

Sounds interesting using Solar Orange, its not a paint I have currently though so will give it a miss this time but I will pick one up for the future and try it out.

They look great, except the loyalist weapons somehow ruin the effect...I think it would look better if you made them more ornate, if not necessarily chaos-y. At present they look too functional compared to the ornate armour.

Those are some awesome models.

But I do agree with the guy above.
Maybe some sort of ornate gun barrels just to keep up the look of the army.

But that Ezekial is just pure win,I'm sorry but I'm stealing that now.

I choose to use the imperial heavy weapons for two reasons the first is that the devastator box as so many more heavy weapons compared to the havoc box, secondly I wanted to try and keep the army quite clean as in not much chaosing them up with skulls etc.

As the Thousand Sons are a mutation free army I wanted to build on this a bit more as they are the closet to imperial marines that chaos has to offer if you can get past the we no longer have a body issue lol.

Oh I forgot to say the Sergeant in the havoc squad is a converted Techmarine, this is the picture before he was painted.

FAir enough, you seem very capable with GS so just adding some rivets or guilding to them would make them look more ornate. It would improve the look a lot IMHO...

I like the idea of some rusty rivets, although I'm not sure if GSing onto a painted mini would work. I wanted to make up the other two heavy plasma guns so I have a choice of weapons for the squad, might have a play with them and see what I can come up with.

I actually didn't even notice the weapons!

I don't think they look out of place though, but maybe that's cause I'm a loyalist at heart!

Some really really good brush control here GiraffeX, especially on the sword detail and helms. Looking great. For the first minis in such a long time, these are absolutely excellent.

Looking forward to seeing how things progress as you get more into the swing of painting again!

The raptors had a small break this week while I painted a miniature for my girlfriend.

I present to you a fair lady upon a white horse

This is the the feudal knight mounted sorceress with parchment from Gamezone.

The miniature was a nightmare to put together and required lots of GS and was not easy to photo either but I loved painting it.

It's update time

It took a while due to being too busy with work the last few weeks but I've finally finished my Raptor squad now.

For some reason they just ate away the hours painting them as there are lots of layers to get to the final result for each colour.

I also thought today would be a good day to so you all my work in progress shots so you have an idea of whats on the horizon.

First up is my Daemon Prince who is next on the painting table, I'm looking forward to painting him but a bit worried in case I mess it up.

I've also got a dreadnought ready for painting although I still need to do a little bit of work on the sarcophagus (not sure if thats spelt right).

Then we have a chosen squad although the main guy at the front needs an arm removing as I modelled him wrong as he cant have both of those weapons.

Last of the Thousand Sons stuff to show you today is a bulk of Thousand Sons marines for my basic troops I've more on the way as well.

I've also got a pic of my Purge Daemon prince as well who is very much still a work in progress

That's it for the chaos side at the moment. I also wanted to list whats in my head for other units as well to keep me going and also to use it as a tick list.

Thousand Sons
Necrosphinx/Defiler conversion
Grey Knight/Thousand Sons terminator conversions
Magnus the Red (big conversion job)
Vindicators
Greater Daemon of Tzeentch
Dryad/Horror conversions

The Purge
Terminators with Lightning Claws (FW parts)
Bike Squad (FW Plague marine parts)
Plague Marines
Commander using Kazyk The Befouled On Rot Beast (FW, already bought still in box)

Slaanesh

Warmachine/Terminators conversions
Warmachine/commander conversion
Dark Elder Wyches/Daemonetts conversions

Khorne

Daemon Prince (FW)
Death Company/Khorme Berzerkers conversions
Rhino

As you can see I have a lot to do and I expect I will be adding to this list as well.

I'll also be starting up other threads for my Red Scorpians (small force) and WFB Marienburger Empire army which I'm slowly picking up models for, expect lots of pirate action in this one.

When the 40k chaos army is finished I plan to start on an Imperial Guard Beastmen army, all the foot troops will be beastmen apart from the Commissar's as some one has to be in control of the beasts!

There's also going to be some one off models for something different to paint as well.

Wow awesome, the wings are a great idea. The only probalem I see with the wings is they don't keep the egyptian theme. Swooping hawk wings might work, I don't know if they are big enough though, In case you are wondering egyptian style wings would look like the ones on this picture

I think Swooping Hawk wings will be too small if GW still sold bits then I think the wings from Lord Baharroth, The Cry of the Wind would be perfect (Swooping Hawk Exarch).

Yeah should be good I know where I want to put the cannon, hopefully it wont look too dodgy I'm just trying to work out if I need to add an extra pair of claws from the defiler and how to do the twin lascannon.

Love the work you've put into the whole thing.

I like the raptors, but I would have used Chaos Marine torsos (or 1kSons torsos) instead of the BA torsos. The collar obscures the face too much, IMO.

Any chance of getting a closeup of the Daemon Prince? Looks like a different head on the beast. Also, what wings did you use?

Finally, what part is that in the right arm in the Purge DP? Looks like a giant flaming ball of barbed wire!

Looks great all around!

The Thousand Sons torsos are a bit boring to be honest, the BA ones make them stand out a bit more from the rest of the army.

I'll post some pics of the Daemon Prince later before he was under coated he didnt have his tail in those pics though. The head is the horned DP head with a GS beak, the wings are from the High Elf Griffon same as yours I just spread them out to make his wing span look bigger

In the right arm of the Purge DP is a skaven Plague Furnace, yeah he's that big!

Glad you like the army so far

Ok - accepting that this is WIP - this is awesome. The forward stance, the swinging censer/mace (from the Skaven line right?) all imparts a wonderful sense of movement.

Also, I love the raptors - the 1ksons helms really work with the Blood Angels bodies/wings.

Looking foward to your paintjob on the your other DP!

I managed to finish my Daemon prince of Tzeentch this weekend, there’s no chance he will be missed on the battlefield.

His colour scheme is based on the Eclectus Parrot, his bone parts aren’t great as it’s not something I’ve painted much before so I might re-visit those parts later. His demon weapon I decided to try out a sort of white kind of bone effect , it doesn’t look so great in the picture as you can’t see the highlights which always seems to be the case in my images but they are there!

I picked an unusual colour rather than the standard blue as I like to be different, when I pick up my Lord of Change I might do him the standard colour or base him on a different parrot. When I used to play 40k chaos were always bright and colourful, GW seem to have lost some of that over the years the latest codex being a very good example, if its chaos paint it black.

I’m not sure what’s up for painting next it’s either a squad of Thousand Sons or a Warmachine figure I picked up cheap on ebay for something different to paint.

Oh nearly forgot to mention the red shoulder pad is to show he was one of the original Thousand Son's and was granted Daemon hood before their bodys were turned to ash.

I really like the sculpt and I get the parrot scheme but it doesn't work for me personnally. I dunno if I saw that in battle I don't think I would be quaking in fear I think it would be better in more traditional Tzeentch colours and it would tie in with thousand sons better too.

I wanna see your chosen painted too. They look cool but It's hard to tell when they are all black.

Keep it up

Thanks I was going to paint them next due to your comment. I started to get them ready for painting last night but have had some news that a club may be strarting very soon in my area so I've had to put them back on hold while I get some of my basic troops painted, otherwise I wont have a playable force. I plan on weathering these using the tips from grey_death's site, I'm going to try and pull off a red look to the damaged area's to make it look like they were the original Thousand Sons who have since painted their armour blue.

I feel like the slowest painter in the world at the moment, it’s taken me ages to paint the figures for this post and they are my basic troops!

Well I tried both ways of painting the Thousand sons with damage didn’t look great the idea works fine but not with the way I paint my armour. I also tried painting selected parts in red and they looked too much like Khorne worshipers.

So in the end I painted them up as standard Thousand Sons as below, the sorcerer will follow later as I'm waiting for some new paints to come in the post so I can try a different way of painting gold on him.

I got a few bargains as well off ebay a load more Thousand Sons marines which I chucked in the freezer so I could break them all up again as they weren’t in the best positions.

I also got a Forge World daemon prince of Khorne, he did have a lot of spikes missing so I spent most of yesterday chopping bits off left over parts to make him spiky again and I also gave him a nice Micro Art base as well. Here he is below, he's all sprayed up now ready for some paint at a later date.

More bits this time from Forge World I picked up the special weapon pack for the Missile Launchers and Melta Guns. Here's some Thousand Sons from my bargain buy with their new weapons.

Trying to get these to stick together was a compete nightmare every time I thought I had them sorted, When I picked them up something fell off.

I've also ordered my Necrosphinx so the Thousand Sons Necrodefiler will be happening soon.

Not sure what’s up next on the painting block, we shall see.

Hi the blue is done as below, I'm using Vallejo paints but I've listed the GW version of the same colour as well.

Base coat Army painter spray black
Undercoat Imperial Blue (Regal Blue GW)
Highlight inside areas of Imperial Blue with a mix of about 70% Imperial Blue (Regal Blue GW) 30% Magic Blue (Enchanted Blue GW)
Highlight any areas where light would reflect Magic Blue (Enchanted Blue GW)
Ink Wash Asurmen Blue

---

Oh does anyone have any ideas for the colour of the Necrodefiler's rear body, I was thinking of a ruby effect but I don't want it too Khorne like as the main body will be gold of some sort.

Here's the first two Chosen painted up for my squad, I'll start working on the other two soon. The fifth needs to be built due to a weapons mishap with the original fifth member.

They have cloaks as I liked the idea of them sneaking across the battlefield due to their infiltration ability.

I did try the pre heresy colour on a few armour plates of one of the Thousand Sons marines but it looked to Khornate so I went over it in blue. As I intend on adding some Khorne berserkers at a later stage I'm not sure if I will go down that route.

Still open to ideas on how it can be done though as I have a second squad of Thousand Sons to paint and I could do with a different colour to paint other than blue!.

I'm afraid they are already under coated black. I'm sure I can think of something else to do red.

Well my thinking is on the ball today I could paint my terminators in pre heresy colours. I plan to use Grey Knight Terminator bodys for these, they would look very elite in red.

Or a dreadnought but I don't have either of these yet but the terms are on the list of things to buy.

Oh speaking of buying models I had a strange idea when I've painted army's for all four chaos gods I had an idea to have a character to tie them all together like a master of chaos. The plan although I may not be able to pull it off was to do a daemon prince size terminator based on a 54mm model. I'm not very good enough at GS to build one from scratch but may be able to GS a suit onto a model as it should be less work.

Quick question from back in The Lost and the Damned did pink horrors turn into two blue horrors when they were killed?

I know they don’t now, I'm looking at painting mine the main colour whichever one it was I can’t remember now it’s been a while and then fading the second colour into the extremity’s head feet and arms.

Well I'm on my holiday at the moment so when I get a chance to stop doing the gardening I'm painting up my Thousand Sons.

I managed to finish two more Chosen today as below, there will be a big gap before the next one is painted as he's in line to be undercoated with my objective marker I keep forgetting. I need a few more models though before I spray them.

I also have an army pic of the models painted so far for you.

I have an event that I'm hoping to play in at the end of August its 1500 points and will be my first game since 2nd edition. Yeah I know I'm jumping straight into the deep end.

In regards to the army from my so called army list I still have the following to paint before then.

2 Missile Launcher dudes for my Havoc squad

1 lone Chosen marine

1 Sorcerer for my Thousand Son squad

1 Full squad of 6 Thousand Sons and Sorcerer

1 Vindicator (to be purchased)

1 Necrodefiler (waiting for delivery of the Sphynx to convert)

It doesn’t look much but with how slow I paint it’s going to be close and I expect I will muck the Vindicator up, never was any good at painting tanks.

Exciting Times!

Well a little mid week update for you all.

I've been trying out a paint scheme for the basic Chaos Space Marines for my army, they cant be Thousand Sons as they would get mixed up with the actual Thousand Sons marines and that could get rather complicated during a game. So instead I've chosen to paint them in the colours of The Reborn.

This is the test mini, thanks to Gitsplitta for some tips on how to get the effect on the armour.

I'm going to look at getting some older style marines for this squad when I have some spare cash, most likely from Forge World and maybe some heads from Chapter House. The Reborn are supposed to use antiquated weaponry and wear corroded armour.

Also I have started a mini blog for my none chaos stuff which can be found here with my efforts from this weekend.

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/367392.page

On a Khorne realted subject what colours should Khorne Berserkers be? All the pictures of models have them as either World Eaters or Black Legion, which look really bad. Is there any other chapter that worships Khorne with colours that are not red and gold?

Thanks

If you want to do them another colour just choose another one, say that they worship a different manifestation of khorne. He dpoesn't care as long as there is blood.

I'm ok at small conversions but no good at modelling, I have sent a query off to some one who is though. I'm waiting to hear back on how much a custom 54mm Terminator would cost me, at the end of the day if its too much I'll have to think of something else.

Miss Dee wrote:or do them blue and white pre heresy colours

Just a few shots of my latest WIP for my Thousand Sons which I've been working on today, a Necrodefiler. I need to do some small hole filling and cables for the heavy flamers but it all went together better than I planned.

Keeping it short tonight as I have to get some sleep as I have to get up for work at 03:30 tomorrow morning (Sunday ), I couldnt resist showing him off though.

I think they had the same idea and decided to call me early at 01:30 instead and I've been up since, I was even varnishing my painted guys after I finished at 6am.

So as I've mentioned above all my painted guys now have two coats of varnish so that gives me some more room on my painting area to fit the Necrodefiler in and a Vindicator I won off ebay.

I've got a few odd guys left to paint up then I can work on the defiler.

1 Sorcerer for my Thousand Sons squad, I've been doing a few bits on him today. I'd say 50% finished at the moment.
2 Missile Launcher Havocs
1 Chosen

Then its the Defiler, a squad of Thousand Sons and then finishing off with the Vindicator which gives me 1500 points for the end of August. Oh and I need to work out how to play as things have changed a lot since 2nd Edition!.

After that I have a ton of other Chaos stuff planned and my list keeps expanding.

I got put off painting the last few weeks due to to all the bad vibes from Games Workshop with their planned price rises, the new Finecast range and what they have done to stop mail order companys supplying the sounthern countries.

But I've kicked myself back into gear today and finished my Thousand Sons Sorcerer and undercoated my Vindicator as well.

I've just put in an order for some special pearl (pearlescent) paint. I'm looking forward to seeing what I can do with this, it should fit in with the Tzeentch change theme on my vehicles.

The Necrodefiler is still waiting to be green stuffed at the moment.

Thanks daxx, I'm using Vallejo paints but I've listed the GW version of the same colour as well.

Base coat Army painter spray black

For the Blue its

Undercoat Imperial Blue (Regal Blue GW)
Highlight inside areas of Imperial Blue with a mix of about 70% Imperial Blue (Regal Blue GW) 30% Magic Blue (Enchanted Blue GW)
Highlight any areas where light would reflect Magic Blue (Enchanted Blue GW)
Ink Wash Asurmen Blue GW

For the Gold its

Polished Gold (Burnished Gold GW)
Ink wash Gryphonne Sepia GW

On the Sorcerer I tried a coat of Heavy Ochre (Tausept Ochre GW) before applying the Polished Gold, it gives the gold a warmer feel.

Thanks the pearlescent paint (powder) arrived today, looking forward to using but I need something to test it on before I hit the Vindicator with it. I might try and get some panels on my dreadnought painted and test it on that. Well I've finished my two extra havoc marines with FW Missile Launchers. To be honest they were a complete disaster from the start. Trying to glue three different types of material together wasn’t easy to say the least, these guys have plastic legs, back packs, shoulder pads and backs, metal heads and front and resin weapons and arms.

After I managed to get them to stay together the spray undercoat went horribly wrong as its all rough on the legs and the front of the missile launcher on the left hand side. I've no idea what caused this and the rest of the minis that were sprayed at the same time came out fine including my Khorne FW Daemon Prince, I would have been most upset if he came out like these two.

In the end I didn’t enjoy painting them and it does show, but here they are none the less.

Next up is the Vindicator as the Necrodefiler is still waiting on work, I can’t use GS while the weather is bad as it really irritates my skin.

I started painting my Vindicator today and it was going very well until I decided to test out my pearl powder I had for this very project. Of course me being me I forgot to test it first, so I mixed it into the varnish to apply it on a 1 to 4 ratio as per instructions (it could have been a bit more…).

Well it didn’t go very well that’s for sure as below. The pearl powder had a strange effect on the varnish and it didn’t dry clear as per normal leaving me with a very streaky mess.

I then walked away in despair hoping that if I left it for the four hours drying time for varnish it might get better, I wasn’t hopeful though and four hours went past and it stayed the same.

So I’ve just gone over it with a very watered down blue the same colour as the base coat and then washed it in Asurmen Blue to try and take some of those streak marks away.

I’m now looking at this.

I don’t really know what to do with it now, it’s still a bit streaky but it’s not as easy to notice although the blue has a very odd colour effect to it (it’s not a bad odd).

Should I keep it like this and try and replicate it over the rest of the vehicle or try something else, any advice would be welcome.

I will be weathering and doing damage as well to the vehicle.

You need to use purity seal after Varnishing. Varnish always leaves a shiny reflection. Anything that I paint and seal I start with hard coat and then follow up with purity seal.

I really like it so far, some insane conversion work going on.

My favorite part is probably the custom banner on the thousand sons, looks sweet.

My opinion on the regular csm marines is to paint them something other than that gold scheme, I dont think it will look good with the rest of the army. Mabe paint them purple or blue and black or something.

Thanks glad you like them.

The custom banner is actually a converted War Banner from Crocodile Games.

In regards to the regular marines the gold ones (The Reborn) they should look ok when I get the right models from FW, the army wont be just Thousand Sons there will be lots of other warbands as well as I have too many ideas to limit myself to just Thousand Sons.

This is going to be a huge project.

I've since painted the rest of the Vindicator and it looks lots better I need to redo the highlights on the side I done first as per the pictures in the above post.

Once I've got it all to the same level I'll post another WIP pic, should be in a few days.

Thanks both.

I finished the pearlescent Vindicator this weekend, here's a few pictures from the garden, sadly it wasn't sunny.

The other half of the eye symbol will be on my second Vindicator when I get one as they will be a pair. The Hieroglyphs on the left which represent the name of the Vindicator, as they are in a cartouche translate roughly to Hell. The other Vindicator will be called Fire.

Thanks for the comment Markillius08 glad you like my Vindicator.

I got my powder from ebay you need to search for "pearl paint powder"

This is the shop I bought mine from they ship to the US and do a range of different colours. They do lots of other interesting things as well which I haven't tried out yet, just need to find the right models lol.

specialist_paints_0114-3277848

A note of warning though you only need a very small amount of powder. I do one small pile of powder for every six drops of matt varnish (the pile of powder is the same size as a drop of varnish), that's how you paint it on you mix it into the varnish.

This vindicator has four coats.

THANK YOU!!! Did the size of the flake matter? I'm looking at his stuff and I'm not sure if the flakes are the same size or if it's just the amount you buy them in that changes.

It's not the flakes you want, I used this one as an example.

The flake ones will actually have flakes in the powder which is different to what I used, I went with pure powder.

moonshine wrote:Oooh good idea. Are these thousand sons in the black legion ? Are you going to use a heirogliph for knowledge on your other vehicles ?

No I'm actually doing a Thousand Sons army, no black legion for me. I will be doing other warbands but not the black legion as it makes things to easy from a painting perspective to tie in the units together.

I'm not sure what's going to happen with my other Vehicles at the moment, the other vindicator is planned so it makes a pair with this one. I would like to get some Rhinos at some point but find the price in £'s is a lot more than their points worth in the army list.

I may do some Landraiders at some point in the distant future but they will be for my Iron Warriors, I'm also getting ideas for a Predator but that will most likely be part of my Red Corsairs warband.

When I get round to play I will be using legal warbands fighting along side each other, so each warband I paint will have a minimum of two troops and an HQ unit. It makes it more fun from a modelling perspective no idea if it will work in a gaming perspective but as long as I have fun that's all that matters.

Lots of warbands are great. I agree having the freedom to have lots of warbands is much more fun for modeling and painting.

Thanks Remi I don't like doing freehand either I'm really bad at it. For the tanks I drew the lines in pencil first and then painted over them, it made it much easier.

In regards to what's next this is what's on the table at the moment.

Currently painting an objective marker which hopefully I will have finished tonight.

One Thousand Son Squad which I may start painting the base coat of the first few guys tonight.

Necrodefiler which has been built and converted just waiting for the dreadknight base from the US to mount it on before I can undercoat it.

One lone Chosen Marine waiting for the next batch of undercoating.

Skyrar of the Dark Wolves who is in the modelling stage.

I'm also doing some modelling work on my Nurgle daemon Prince as I want to enter it into the dakka painting competition this month, this month its best unpainted conversion.

A very small update for you today and this will probably be all I have for you this week as I came down with a migraine today which has put me out of action and I'm working tonight so there won’t be much of a chance of me finishing anything tomorrow.

So this is what I finished during the week, I have noticed that I forgot to go round the base in black which I shall do as soon as I can. There is also a blue mark on the bottom which you can see in the pic but doesn’t show up in real life and it will be too much hassle to fix it.

The crack through the middle of the base is filled with water effect but my camera doesnt pick it up for some reason.

So here is my first objective marker for my Thousand Sons, I'm planning on doing three in total. Would you ever need any more in a game for your own side?

A small update for you as I'm still busy painting my Thousand Sons squad, well I might have had it done today if I wasn't distracted by the below.

So today I have some WIP shots of a few minis I made when I should have been painting.

Now there is a story here last Friday (not the one just gone) I went to my local GW and picked up a Captain Stern model as I wanted to convert it into an obliterator, yeah expensive but i had an idea I wanted to try.

So I got the new mini home and was quite excited as it was my first finecast model. Got it out of the pack and my jaw dropped it was the worst mini I have ever seen so many miscasts and air bubbles, to say I was disappointed was an understatement. So I fired off an email to GW saying how unhappy I was with the purchase. I had a look on ebay and picked up a metal version instead (for nearly half the price) and returned my finecast model on Monday for a re-fund.

A few days ago my ebay Captain Stern arrived and all was good although it would be more work to convert it, then the next day GW responded to my email and said they would send me another copy, bargain.

My Finecast model arrived today and was free of flaws it was lovely.... and this is the results of a hard days work!

Metal Captain Stern

Finecast Captain Stern

I plan on getting the Astral Claws terminator from FW for my third Obliterator.

I also finished making Skyrar of the Dark Wolves today as well

The only down point to the day is my primer ran out so I now have a half primed Necrosphinx

I forgot to ask about colour advice for the obliterators, I don't want to use any colours of the four gods of chaos so the below are out as they may be used for the other parts of my chaos hordes.

Blue/Gold
Pink/Turquoise/White
Red/Brass
Gold/Green/Black
Green/Brown
Darkgrey/Light Blue
Red/Black
Blue/Red

I have thought about purple but not sure what colour to combine with it, it would have to not be similar to Slannesh schemes though. I wouldn't want to use red as it would be too close to the Night Lords colours if I do them.

I finished my Second Thousand Sons squad tonight.

I decided to paint their left shoulder trims in white so I could tell the units apart on the battlefield. The sorcerer had a slight conversion at the last minute as I wanted to make him look a bit different to the other sorcerer (same model) so I changed his weapon.

The changer of ways is spreading his influence far and wide it seems

---------------------

I've only the defiler and a chosen marine left now that need painting before my first game in August. I'm well on track at the moment although the place I order my black primer spray is out of stock which is a bit of a nightmare as they both need undercoating.

I only have two figures undercoated at the moment to paint a FW Khorne Daemon Prince and a Thousand Sons dreadnought, I expect I will start painting the dreadnought this weekend.

I've also been thinking about what to do with this blog when I've finished painting my Thousand Sons. I do plan on doing lots of other Chaos warbands as below although they are still in the thought process although I have purchased some bits for some of them.

Should I change this blog into an all powers chaos blog and take over the universe or seperate them into individual blogs?

Heres an update on what I have planned/painted so far

Thousand Sons

Chaos Sorcerer - painted
Daemon Prince - painted
Chosen - painted bar one
Thousand Sons Squad - painted
Thousand Sons Squad - painted
Raptors - painted
Havocs - painted
Vindicator - painted
Vindicator - not purchased yet
Defiler - Waiting to be painted
Dreadnought - Waiting to be painted
Lesser Daemons - not purchased yet
Greater Daemon - not purchased yet
Magnus the Red (counts as Daemon Prince) - not purchased yet
Terminators - not purchased yet

The Reborn (Nurgle)

Daemon Prince - in conversion stage
Chaos Lord (terminator armour) -
Chaos Lord (on bike) - Purchased (KAZYK THE BEFOULED ON ROT BEAST)
Chaos Marine Squad + Rhino -
Plague Marines -
Plague Marines -
Plague Marines Bike Squad -
Terminators (LC)-
Dreadnought -
Typhus Herald of Nurgle -

Khorne - Chapter not decided yet

Daemon Prince - purchased
Berzerker Squad + Rhino -
Lesser Daemons -

Slannesh - Chapter not decided yet

Terminators -
Chaos Lord -
Lesser Daemons - Purchased
Lucius the Eternal -

Night Lords - thinking of basing these on the assault side of the Blood angel codex

Red Corsairs

Predator -
Chaos Marine Squad -
Huron Blackheart -

Iron Warriors- I might use units from both the Imperial and Chaos codexs due to better tech in the imperial codex.

Daemon Prince -
Land Raider -
Land Raider -
Warsmith -

Skyrar's Dark Wolves - thinking of basing these on the space wolf codex

Skyrar - purchased

Other

Obliterators - in conversion stage
Horus -

I think this lot will keep me going for years but its going to be fun and thats not including the other armies I want to do on the imperial side. When I get into a hobby I get rather addicted!

All hail the dark gods

Well, as a Chaos Fanatic I had to check this out. So, I've just read through the entire blog. There is some excellent stuff here, particularly those Thousand Sons. The blues are nicely done and the gold is pretty crisp and shiny.

The Tzeentchian Daemon Prince looks brilliant, kind of how I originally wanted my DP's to look.

Anyway, it's great to see another Chaos devotee. And, I think your right, Tzeentch's influence spreads and corrupts the best of us.

Really glad you like the army so far, the defiler should be really special.

Yeah I do need to paint something different Emperors Children or The Flawless Host is what I've been thinking of lately.

The Slaanesh (must start spelling it right) models will incorporate a lot of Warmachine conversions from the ideas I've had so far.

Miss Dee wrote:Do you want me to do your Night Lords for you?

Thanks for the offer Miss Dee but I'm ok doing the Night Lords, in fact I'm really looking forward to doing them. I need to pick up a BA codex to see if I can pull it off though. I want to have the models in dynamic poses but I'm a bit worried if I put them on bases with high scenery like bits of buildings it might cause los complaints in tournaments.

If the codex works out I'm looking at running the Sanguinary Guard as gargoyles for the Night Lords , need to pick up some Scourge wings for those.

I'm also going to read the Night Lord books to get more of a feel for them.

I really need to sort myself out and decide which force to do after I've finished the Thousand Sons, otherwise I'll try and do them all at once and have a melt down

Those are some lovely painted models you have there. I like the idea of running a squadron of vindicators, 3 big templates at a higher BS than the defeiler, plus if you get a weapon destroyed and loose the cannon, as long as you put the siege shield on, tank shock and ram everything else.

Thanks, I'm not keen on that arm either but it suited the movement of the model.

I just hope I can do the model justice when I paint it.

Not a painting update although my Dreadnought should be finished this weekend but I'm not liking how it looks at the moment.

Today I realised I have less than two months before my tournament, I may only have a Defiler and a Chosen left to paint although there may be a few Thousand Sons I need to do as well.

But I'm at that stage where I'm getting rather nervous about playing again.....As I've mentioned before I've not played 40k since second addition, I've read the rules (once) and know my codex quite well. There is the issue of not being able to practice, due to work commitments I cant make it to the weekly clubs in my area.

So I'm going in right at the deep end with no experience under my belt and no idea about what I'm going to face as I dont have any of the other codexs. Tau, Sisters of Battle, Dark Eldar and Necrons weren't even around in my day and models had their own movement rates!

I'm going to try running a few skirmish games against myself to get a finer grip of the rules, sad I know but not much else I can do.

My tournament (if I get a place) is 1500 points and this is the list I'm looking to run at the moment. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm going to drop the Havoc champion to save a few points to bring it back in range.

Chaos Sorcerer 110
Warptime 25
Bolt of Change 25
Jump Pack 25
Mark of Tzeentch 30
215

Chosen 6 Men 108
4 Meltaguns 40
Power Sword 15
148

Thousand Sons 6 man squad 198
Wind of Chaos 30
228

Thousand Sons 6 man squad 198
Wind of Chaos 30
228

Chaos Raptors 5 man squad 100
Flamer 5
Champion 15
Power Fist 25
145

Chaos Havocs 5 man squad 75
Lascannon x2 70
Missile Launcher x2 40
Champion 15
Power Weapon 15
Plasma Pistol 15
145

Chaos Vindicator 125
Daemonic Possession 20
145

Chaos Defiler 150
Twin Linked Lascannon 20
170

Total 1509

I also have the following models which can be added if needed

Daemon Prince 110
175 Wings 20
Mark of Tzeentch 20
Bolt of Change 25

Chaos Dreadnought 90
105 Missle Launcher 0
Close Combat Arm 10
Heavy Flamer 5

If anyone can see any gaping holes please let me know, I had planned on joining the Chaos Sorcerer with the Raptors and using them to Deep Strike. The Chosen are my anti tank unit.

I just finished reading A Thousand Sons last night and didn't feel it was that great a novel unless of course I'm missing a sequel. There were a number of points that weren't answered in my view manly the fall of the legion and the Rubic spell. Are these covered in another book?

I've only read a few other 40k books Brothers of the Snake and Grey Knights which were an excellent read.

I think I might try Soul Hunter next although I have a lot of other books to read first.

Just took some pictures of my Thousand Sons dreadnought I finished last night, I wasn't very happy with it until the last moment and it suddenly pulled its self together.

No conversions as its not something I'm going for with the Thousand Sons, fluff wise I dont even think its possible to have a dreadnought for these guys any more, never mind.

I hope you like him, one thing I have noticed from the pics is I may need to darken the centre of the skulls eyes but I'll see what you all think first.

I've also started to paint my Necrodefiler, its looking really nice so far

edit: Oh looks like the warp is creaping into the picture on the right, a true sign of Chaos!

I wasn't either to start with but since I've added the rust stains it feels a lot better, I nearly did paint over them at one point but felt the dreadnought would look too much like an Ultramarine dread.

I'm hoping the yellow and blue bands will tie in with the Thousand Sons helmets.

In that case GiraffeX, you made the right decision. Great dread... O.K. so I'm just a sucker for dreads.... but that's a nice one! :-) You might add an additional chaos icon or two to the upper half of the dread... the wings make it look SO Imperial and there are so many skulls in standard Imperial iconography that it's not enough by itself to set it off as a traitor machine.

I thought I'd tease you with some work in progress shots tonight.

First up is a Slaanesh daemonette, I thought these would be easy I bought a box of wyches and some daemonette claw arms and was just going to glue them on, seems easy doesn't it. Well I didn't do my home work on the daemonette arms and didn't realise even after purchasing them that the shoulders are attached to the bodies, who would have thought that!

So I've had to do some major chopping and pinning with the arms in the box to bring the first daemonette to you. As a plus it means I have full control on the arm poses now, I just need to make another five and because of the thin arms the pins need to be really tiny which I'm not enjoying. I'll get there just have to do one a week or something like that.

Next up with have some what will be pink horrors, I've built three so far. I need to do some work on their backs with GS to fill some holes but with a lick of paint I think they will pass very nicely.

I saved the best for last some WIP shots of my Necrodefiler. I have some time off work over the next few weeks so will be spending a lot of it painting this beast up.

I hope you like it so far.

Thanks moonshine, the Hellpit Abomination is a good idea for Nurgle thanks .

I had an idea last night of using the Arachnarok Spider as a Khorne one but I really cant stand spiders so it may not happen.

Now all I need is an idea for Slannesh one and I'll have a full set.

If you are looking for a model to make into a khorne Defiler then with some heavy conversion you could use the Lizardmen Stegadon.

And for Slaanesh how about the Tyranid Trygon/Mawlock ? That could work.

I had thought of something similar for Khorne but instead of using the GW Stegadon using the Banebeast Ulmons, Tarask of Var which is bigger and better, how to add weapons to it is another matter though.

Heres a link to it http://www.maelstromgames.co.uk/index.php?act=pro&pre=mae_blg_bnb_mon_013_000

I also found a pic of it unmade in the rumours section.

I'll have a think about the nid stuff.

Him not sure about the necrodefiler, dont get me wrong even in PIP it looks like it's going to be great i'm just not a fan of the conversion.

I dont think the weapons just stuck on the 'wing-blades' is imaginative enough. However i am slightly biased in that i hate the 'wing-blades'; personally i think they ruin what could have been an amazing kit from gw. I do like the belly cannon though, didnt notice it at first just assumed it was part of the original kit

I too have the same thought about the guns on the arms but I can't really criticize as where else is there to put them? Perhaps integrate them with the blades more smoothly? but this takes away from the chaos look a bit. dont know if there is a good solution here.

Yeah there wasn't many options for where to place the twin linked heavy flamers.

I feel the lascannons look ok though.

Not sure about the Tarascus inmygravenimage, I feel it has less options for mounting weapons than the Banebeast.

For the Banebeast you could mount an auto canon in each horn or have them as bio weapons coming out of its flesh each side of its mouth.

No idea where to put the cannon though. You could raise the top armour plate and have it between that and it's head not sure though.

Hi All

It’s been a busy week this week with a few random minis for different units. I usually take pics before I varnish my guys so these will look slightly different and the varnish went a bit haywire and has given them a very glossy coat which I'm not happy about as its matt gloss and has been fine for the rest of the army so far. I was lucky as I varnished the Necrosphinx at the same time and it pulled through ok.

From left to right we have an alternative captain for my Havoc squad with no additional weapons, A random guy for one of my Thousand Sons squad so I don’t have to use my test mini and the last two are the final members of my Chosen unit, the gloss has killed all the weathering effects on the cloaks

This week I also knocked out a unit of Pink horrors as below, I really like these they have different washes on them to give them a slightly different look.

There was also going to be a cool objective marker but it’s not ready, I over did it on the special effects and it’s not dried yet, it’s only been drying for two and a half days now!

I hope to bring it too you sometime next week.

On an alternative note for those of you familiar with the FW Contemptor dreadnought and if not the pic is below, does anyone have any ideas on how to Khorne this mean machine up. I'm looking at purchasing one with two powerfists and I'm trying to think where to add skulls etc.

More images can be found here http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Space_Marines/Space-Marine-Dreadnoughts/CONTEMPTOR_PATTERN_DREADNOUGHT_BODY.html

Thanks for dropping in to my world of Chaos.

Nice objective marker

You want to khorne this dread up, wow!!!!!!!!!
If you don't mind spending the money, I would also get the new MKIV Iron Clad Chainfist!! and add that to the underside of the Close comat arm, thats if it comes in parts and is not just one big resin piece.

For ultra khorne blood and guts I would even get a chainsaw on each arm.

For skulls, you could try what I did on my khorne dread with the spikes, or get a load of skulls and drill a chain through them and have that either as a neckless or wraped around the leg or arms.

I want to buy one now

I really like the idea of using dryads for the pink horrors- I started in a time when they were squat thingys with big hands. I like that yours look like pink/blue flame elementals (about to put "flaming" but realized that's probably not the best word choice... )

Also, nice marker- Where's it from?

I'm not sure if I will be able to afford the chainfist arms as well as I'll be getting some other Khorne stuff at the same time.

I am looking at trying to find a good source to get plastic skulls from, I was thinking about putting them on the shoulders and along the front above the head as part of the armour so they kind of come out if you see what I mean.

I did think I would catch your attention with that Dread lol

Well after my next objective marker I'm all ready for my first game, I have my tickets for the tournament now. So its just a small case of working out how to play.

I'm currently painting one of my obliterators which should be finished tomorrow after that I don't have much left on my painting table.

I think I have two Daemon princes one Nurgle and one Khorne but I don't want to start them until I get some guys to go with them.

Some Daemonettes to make although I have miss-used some parts so I can no longer make a unit of six that I intended.

Another obliterator which needs priming

My failed attempt at the 40k pimp my sorcerer competition model, I cant even look at it any more its so bad. This is where my poor Wyche and Daemonette parts went.

Oh I could finish my Empire General on griffon, needs a load of converting work.

I'm probably going to move on to my next Chaos god now which will be Khorne. I still have a few things left to do for the Thousand Sons like some terminators, a Lord of Change and a second Vindicator but they are not urgently needed.

The next tournament after my one next month is a 2 player event in November so I'm going to see if I can purchase/paint up the below for my force.

Chaos Lord with Terminator armour and Lightning Claws

Daemon Prince of Khorne

Chaos Dreadnought with two combat arms

2 units of 10 Khorne Berserkers

I think that's it, I will try and make sure I have two obliterators in case the HQ is limited to one per player.

I did go over the top with all the chain fists business Skulls coming out of the armour will be cool! Is it going to be a dread or a daemon type thing? It's my birthday next week, and I have asked for a dreadknight, which will become some sort of chaos dread or DP I didn't decide yet. After seeing the pic of the dread you are getting, I nearly changed mind

It's going to be a close combat dread. I might see if you can fit in a Khorne Berserker head, that might look good.

Yeah Dreadknights are nice I want to build something like the GW Daemon Prince/Knight using bits from both kits for an Iron Warrior DP. I plan on using different wings though.

This is a good example of what happens if you don't keep your protective runes in check when deep striking, it leaves you open to disease.

Obliterator number 1 - Captain Stern

I went for a colour that none of the other chaos gods use so he would not be mistaken for a normal terminator.

The last few days I've been painting up some test minis which you will find below. I was going to also do a Night Lords mini but with the rumours going round of a Chaos Legion Codex about March time next year its put a big dent into my esteem for this project.

Its great if its true but it means I don't really want to be buying models that I may no longer be able to use in a few months time.

I have put in an order for my small World Eaters force (900 points), I'm quite excited about doing them.

The Night Lords will go on hold with The Reborn and the Flawless Host. I'll still be painting anything I need for my Thousand Sons though and anything I currently have waiting to be painted.

After my Khorne force (which will include a Flawless Host sorcerer) I'll be looking at either doing Skyrar's Dark Wolves based on the Space Wolves codex, might start a separate blog for them or I'll turn traitor and start looking at doing some of my Imperial projects in my other blog in my signature. If I don't see any more rumours of the Chaos Legion Codex by the end of the year (it will take me to November painting all my Khorne stuff) I'll pick up on the Chaos stuff again.

Ok enough of my rambling here's the test minis, note they are badly constructed have random super glue splashes and missing bits of armour! They are left over parts from a Thousand Sons auction I won off ebay, I have given them new heads and a few other bits but they are in a bit of a state.

Flawless Host

World Eaters

Skyrar's Dark Wolves front

Also trying out something different for the bases with these guys as they will be a separate army, I'll also be doing battle damage for these as well using grey_deaths sponge technique.

I know I need to work on my blending of the purples and greys a bit more but I didn't want to go over these guys again.

Let me know what you think

Thanks tipios The trim colour on the Flawless Host marine I'm not 100% sure on yet either. I might try blending up instead of using two different colours.

Glad you like the Khorne colours, I've just got lots of stuff in the post this weak so will be building a lot of Korne stuff over the next few weekends.

These will all be World Eater Berserkers and there is also a Contemptor dread in there some where as well.

Still waiting for a few more bits from America skulls for the dread and a few alternitive close combat weapons for the zerkers.

I've just finished another TS marine to fill in some points for my 1500 army and also finished a Sumo wrestler which is in my mini project blog, link in my sig.

Still have an objective marker to go for the Thousand Sons then it will be time to start building zerkers.

I have another update for you today.

The first is my third Thousand Sons objective marker.

The other thing I have today is my first World Eaters Berserker

I wasn't expecting to finish him as I only started painting him today.

There must always be blood for the blood god and I feel this mini fitted the role perfectly, he will be a normal berserker in the unit.

Hi Spartan the Berserkers will be running normal berserker rules, maybe in the future they could be used as Death Company marines as I want to base my Night Lords on the Blood Angel codex depending on what happens with the rumoured Chaos Legions codex.

tipios wrote:How did you do the gold on the objective maker? looks nice. The beserker lloks nice, did you consider have some blood spillling out of the cup?

The gold on the objective marker was a dry brush of Bright Bronze over a black undercoat and then dry brushed with Polished Gold and a very fine dry brush of Ice Blue (all Vallejo). Yeah I have had thoughts of putting some water effect in the top of the cup as there is a slight indent so it would look ok and have a bit spilling out. I'll give it a go over the weekend if I have time.

I like the idea of skulls and additional icons but I'm no good with GS so we will see how it comes out cutting up bits and using them.

I'm not sure I can pull off the claw fists, I'll be painting on some Khorne symbols, I did have a look at the FW brass sheet but their version of the symbol isn't what I'm after I prefer the old school version. The skull idea sounds really nice but sadly not something I will be able to pull off.

Not sure If I will have much of an update this weekend as I'm busy out and about doing summer things, never know I might surprise you though.

I like the idea of the contemptor in khorne-flake flavor. The mods are pretty damn sweet on it, I must say.

However, I gotta say the pose is somewhat static... It might just be me, and you may prove me totally wrong (to which I'd gladly bow to your expertise), but I see Khorne, I think berzerker barbarian. I'd expect a more dynamic pose- one foot forward, back leg on the tippy-toe, dread beating its armored chest with the dead DC marine, or a vicious roar pose (see Fable 2 "evil" expressions)... the standing upright is just... unnatural to me.

But other than the pose, the dread has been converted nicely. I'm looking to the paint-job. You going pre or post heresy World Eater?

Keep 'em coming, GiraffeX!

Thanks guys he does have a bit more movement in him but its not picked up in the pictures. I'll get some better pics from his other side tomorrow when I get home from work.

Remi your pose examples did make me laugh, they are very good ideas. I'll take them into consideration when I do the other Khorne Contemptor Dreadnought (where did that come from?). I just had an idea for it actually posed kneeling on one knee with its fist on the ground in a kind of a "you want a fight, bring it!" pose after wrecking some dread or vehicle of some sort.

He's going to be done in a post heresy paint scheme.

I kind of will make my World Eaters a close combat army 2 big units of berserkers 2 close combat dreads and a unit of close combat terminators.

Speaking of berserkers I picked up the FW berserker upgrade kit and some plastic berserker shoulder pads and heads from ebay for bits to mix in to make 20 berserkers but the plastic stuff is really tacky compared to the FW kit.

Do you think they will mix ok or should I get another FW kit?

Heres a pic of my first berserker.

Here's the Flawless Host Sorcerer that I converted up today, she will lead one of the units of World Eater Berserker's when they have their first game so will be painted up along side them and the Contemptor.

Her left arm looks a bit bigger than the right but its a spiked glove from the Wyche box and is slightly bigger than the normal arms which are the same size as her normal one if you know what I mean

I've added a few more spikes and a few chains to the back of the Contemptor, I'll post a pic tomorrow if I finish assembling the first berserker squad. There's not much to see though, its going to be down to the paint job to pull off the rest.

Ace models man, im really liking the thousand sons troops.

And the contemptor

Here is a tip you might find useful for your contemptor, you might like:

Add chains to the bottom of the body, and add a dead body to the base (use a race that you don't see everyday like DE or necron)

Hope your army goes well for you.

Thanks happygolucky glad you like the Thousand Sons.

I did look at putting chains on the bottom of the body but it looked a bit dodgy on the Contemptor as its a bit more human shaped than the normal box dreadnoughts. I have added some hanging off the back from the exhaust housing though.

The body is a good idea I might do it on my next dread as this one has a lot of things going on already, cheers.

Here's a shot of the finished berserker squad, Contemptor dread and sorceress before I finished the basing and primed them.

I've also finished the basing on my Sumo in my mini project log as well.

The way I painted the gold came out really nicely I think, thanks to Emperors_Champion for the idea all the way back on the first page of this blog. I do keep all the ideas you give me

I was intending to paint a special model after every five berserker's but I may end up doing the dread first, I can't wait to start painting it.

LOL... give in to the power of the Darkside, and finish the Dread!

Yeah Dreadknights are nice I want to build something like the GW Daemon Prince/Knight using bits from both kits for an Iron Warrior DP. I plan on using different wings though.

From GW's site converted by Donald McCallum

That's my basis for my daemon prince... but I'm going to create rocket boosters in his greaves and his back and then add some guns and a minigun to make him look like war machine

All good ideas-though it MUST have a helmeted/masked head!

Yeah the Darkside is winning by a mile at the moment.

The Sorceress is a Warmachine model, cygnar constance blaize, knight of the prophet

Thanks, I hope I can do the dread justice.

I liked painting the DC marine and felt like doing a squad of them after how happy I was with that guy.

The defiler mask might look ok

Will you add some OSL on the dread arm from the sword, or is it a little to far away?

I think it will be too far away and its pointing away from the dread.

I will be doing OSL from the green power source running along the middle of the base though.

There's not much to see though, its going to be down to the paint job to pull off the rest.

if you don't mind me asking, where is that female model from?

As Miss Dee says its from Warmachine from the Cygnar range the name of the character is Constance Blaize, Night of the Prophet.

Here's a link to the mini on Maelstrom, both arms are separate from the main model.
