Khorne Berzerker Dread! *Dang... It's been a year? Update-time!* @ 2011/09/04 11:31:27

Post by: GuitaRasmus

Edit: READ THIS FIRST!

A lot has happened to my focus since I started this blog. I've been asked to put some of the tastier stuff together, so people can get an overview. On page 51 I have put up pics of all the Dark Mechanicus I'm working on up, in a single post, since there's a lot of pages. Feel free to look through them, and please comment - I love getting comments and critiques.

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/1500/395043.page#5845165

About a month ago, I sold the Khorne army to a guy who will really appreciate them. I have to admit that while I liked the project, I eventually found my Death Guard and now Dark Mech much more exciting from a fluff and conversion perspective, so they moved on. My Death Guard isn't going to go anywhere though, they're too close to my heart, those nasty little buggers. I'll put up a collection of photos of those in the near future too.

And here's where it all started:

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________

Hi guys - my dreadknight project had quite a bit of interest (http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/386829.page), so I figured you might find this interesting as well.

I've been thinking about getting back in the game (in a very small scale, but just a game now and then for fun), but I can't really see myself playing Grey Knights. Great models, great rules, but they're just a little too pure for me. I read about someone making a khorne army, using blood angels codex, and this sounds like it makes great sense. I'm also considering using juggernaut mounted marines, using the sanguinary guard rules (movement, fear and extra armour save makes sense, doesn't it? Bear in mind that I've been out of this hobby for 15 years)

Back in the day, I used to field a very big chaos space marine army (nightlords and khorne), and I've always had a week spot for the chaos powers. I really like them all, but Khorne and Nurgle are really fun to paint and play. I've got 3 of the old chaos (also the present I guess?) dreads, and I really think the design team missed designing these. They just look kind of silly. Anyway, I got inspired; I want to field a berzerker/khorne army! It needs berzerkers, terminator berzerkers, berzerkers mounted on juggernauts, and a berzerker dread!

The current dreads are nice, but a bit static, and the chaos one just suck. The forgeworld ones are better, a bit static as well, but I like plastic - I can't say enough nice things about the new plastic models, even though I grew up with the metal ones. Anyway, I thought about it, and came to the conclusion that a furioso would be the closest thing to what I needed. And a box of bloodcrushers! This will make sense in moment.

I wanted it to be aggressive and roaring, like a machine and man, driven mad by frenzy, and roaring to the sky. I cut most of the symbols off of the DC dread (leaving the skulls), and cut as many spikes and put them on as I could, and used a juggernaut head, and put it on a scenic base. I'm pretty pleased with it. I also like the broken chains a lot - in the old fluff, the chaos dreads were chained, when on the spaceships, to control them in their madness - is this still true?

Anyway, 4 hours of conversion later - meet Spike aka Bob the blender (he really needs a proper name):

Let me hear what you think.

Also a nurgle deamon prince, just because I like the model:

I might make some plague marines as well, but we'll see.

The next project is assembling a great Berzerker terminator I've bought as well, and the juggers, and getting them painted.

Jeez that thing is awesome/scary! The model alone would make it a shooting magnet cause no one would want it in CC

Thanks for the nice comments guys!

A berzerker terminator lord joins the party:

I used a plastic terminator lord, and did some reposing on the legs, to make it look like he's charging, and ditto on the cape, so it follows the pose. The head is a shaved down bloodletter head from the bloodcrushers box, I think the roaring face suits the charging pose nicely.

BTW, please excuse the pics - It's getting a bit too dark to take pics using natural light, but I wanted to show him off.

I just primed them, and I'll probably get a bit of paint on them tonight.

Blood Angel codex as a Chaos army!. . . Hmm. . . Sanguinius would turn in his grave!

Is a good idea though, i've actually considered myself a couple of times!

As for the dread, I don't like it. . . I love it! Really nasty looking! He'll look awesome in khorne colours!

Only one crit, I i'm not keen on the termies cloak, I'm not sure why but cloaks don't really seem khornate to me. Great pose though and again, he'll look badass when painted!

Keep it coming!

Subbed!

Thanks a lot guys!

Emperors Champion: Just had a look a your blood angels - really crisp and beautifully painted. Would you mind sharing how you paint your gold? My basecoat is dwarf bronze, but it really annoys me that it is so thin that I have to paint 2-3 layers.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
So, I've begun painting the lord;

A couple of problems though - the armour is a bit too orange for my taste. I've found this tutorial, and it looks great, so I guess I'll have to go buy those paints he used for the red:

http://www.40konline.com/community/index.php?topic=181487.0

Would I be able to make it more like his, using red glazes? Or should I start over?

Also, gold is pretty hard to paint nicely. I've basecoated with dwarf bronze, and highlighted with shining gold (the old one), and it doesn't look too good. Any tips for painting nice and quick gold?

Thanks a lot guys.

Tipios - just saw your dread-thread - amazing work.

I've begun the painting of the dread - just got hold of a scab red, red gore and blood red, and will try out the method posted earlier. Whew... It's a lot of work getting a good even basecoat on a dread.

Thanks for checking out my Blood Angels (There's Tau in there too now)!

Your Termies looking awesome!

As for my gold, it's really simple (although I feel it may be a bit clean for khorne) but here it is;

50:50 mix of miltril silver and mach' orange (the foundation)

Fine highlights of neat silver.

Generous wash of sepia!

Simples!

Thanks a lot guys - I'm a bit moved by the responses on this and the dreadknight - I'm just an old timer, coming back into the hobby, and having some of you guys, who do such great work, complimenting mine, really means something.

Killmaimburn: Thanks, your chaos conversions look great as well. You (and anyone else) is welcome to use any and all ideas. That's the great thing about a forum like this.

Emperors champ: Thanks for the tip - I've gotten hold of some shining gold (which is MUCH better than my 15 year old bottle - which has always looked more like a mix of silver and gold), but it's still quite thin - it needs 2-3 coats to cover.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
BTW: I've painted a large part of the dread - but's it's too dark to take pics now - hopefully, I'll have some tomorrow.

The kids at work and I were joking about the berzerker army I'm starting - you know, one could say that berzerkers are insane, perhaps a bit FLAKY? Now, if I called the berzerker lord Khelok, wouldn't it be awesome to have the army called Kheloks Khorne Flakes? And the dread would be called "Ol' Cereal Killer".

And... I'm pretty much finished! I got so excited about it last night, that I pulled through and got him to this stage. There's a bit of detail work left, and I'm still wondering if I should try a stippled armour look, but I'm pretty pleased with this so far. I think this is one of the best models I've done - paint and conversion.

I got the gold look as I wanted - 2-3 coats of shining gold, a devlan mud wash, and recess detailing with badab black. Perhaps it needs a shining gold highlight, but I kinda like the dull gold look - no one wants to get close enough to this guy to polish him! The red is getting much better, but still not completely there - or maybe it is - it looks kinda dark, and suits the berzerker theme well. It IS really difficult to get a good even layer, when scab red is so thin, though.

Anyway, here he is - this has been a blast to convert and paint.

A detail of the glowing eyes:

Let me hear what you think - improvements, tips, etc.

I just ordered A LOT of chaos marine stuff - I'm getting really inspired by this project. I can't wait to get my hands on the berzerkers, terminators and especially the possessed. Oh, and the deamon prince, and...

I've got a few berzerker and terminator parts lying around, which I'm starting to convert. A few teasers - there'll be juggernaut cavalry, and jump packed berzerkers.

Hahaha, your wife collects Khorne? That's awesome!

I'm busy converting a couple of Khorne Terminator at the moment, just taking a break. The first juggernaut cavalry is done, and I'll probably get a couple of pics up tomorrow morning, when I can use the natural light for photos. I think I've come up with a pretty cool solution for the terminator helmets, but I'll let you guys be the judges tomorrow.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I've done a few more.

The juggernaut cavalry; wow, space marines are hard to repose into riders! He'll get a better head soon - I've just used some bits I had lying around, I've ordered a battleforce, and a lot of other stuff, including the FW berzerker kit, and lord zhufor, so I'm just waiting for them to show up.

A winged berzerker - using tyranid gargoyle wings. I'm not completely happy with him, so I'll propably redo him with a worn jumppack instead.

A berzerker with chain glaive - using a grey knight glaive. I'm not really into unhelmeted heads, but this was what I had lying around. New head coming soon.

A charging berzerker:

Khorne terminator - I just got a box of the plastic terminators, and the models just aren't as good as a lot of the rest of the range. The detail (especially the rims) suffers a lot from the casting. I've got a lot of the old metal terminators, but they just look too small, compared to the plastics, so I'll have to make them work. I think the details can be saved by careful painting.
The head is, as you can see, from grey knight terminators. I pondered a bit between these and paladin heads, but I think the sharp edges of the GK terminator heads work really well. I did a bit of chopping and reposing:

I wanted him to have a reaper autocannon, but I think the reaper look suck - it looks too thin, and not like a proper CANNON. I took a gun from the plastic ork bikers sprue, cut it up a bit to make it fit, and made a bajonet from an old plastic orc sword, and added an ammo belt; much better:

The exalted terminator champ - I wanted him to have a really badass chain axe, so I chopped up some ork chainswords, combined it with a sorcerer staff, and did a LOT of reposing and chopping. The plastic terminators are difficult to repose, but I think I got it to work:

Saintspirit: To be honest, I don't really care too much about what is allowed - I just want to models to look really cool and inspiring. If I'm going to play, I'll either play with friends that will allow those options, or proxy them.

I've gotten my hands on a deamon prince, and wanted to try out an idea - to carry on the theme of roundsaw themed weapons, and juggernaut heads. I used the legs from the nurgle deamon prince, since I wanted more of a gigantic space marine power armour look, and glued them together. I think it's okay, but would have liked a bit more of a dynamic pose - the arms arent really very poseable though. Perhaps I'll redo him, but for now:

I also got started on a box of possessed:

Aspiring champion perhaps?

I also got the terminator squad finished. THAT was hard work. The terminator just plain suck, regarding poseability - they're very static, which is not what I had in my for berzerker terminators. They took a long time to convert into cool poses, with tricky drilling, pinning and cutting stuff up, to have CC weapons in both hands - I've used various bits, including GK and SW terminator parts. I'm pretty happy with the outcome, though - Excuse the lack of helmets, but I've ran out of berzerker parts, and am still waiting for them.

As you can see, I've gotten hold of a bunch of the micro art studios bases, and decided to have my whole warband based on these - I think they look great, give more possibilities for dynamic poses (running uphill, downhill, standing on a cliff, etc) and I really like the weight they add. They are a bitch to get the miniature mounted on, though - that resin stuff is hard!

Also, I've decided that every single model in the warband should be converted, in some way - this is the dogma.

Let me hear what you think - I really appreciate any and all response.

Btw: Next up - Forgeworld berzerkers, more jugger cavalry, a Lord Zhufor (helmeted option, which is just about the coolest chaos helmet ever), and more possessed.

Excellent work in here. Thanks for sharing. The attention to detail and (especially) the use of the juggernought heads leads to fantastic results.

I agree that the current terminator models are a bit static. I guess its supposed to make them look slow and ponderous, but that doesn't really mesh well with the idea that they are massively powered and don't particularly slow the marine down much. You really need to chop the legs up pretty badly to rebuild them in a dynamic way. In my experience that leads to madness and green stuff

I like the daemon prince, The hand and head looks like he is saying "come and get some, you cowardly curs, I will kill all of you and feast on your flesh" or something, or swearing, are you sure he wasn't an angry marine that got a bit too angry.

I love the Dog heads and the roundsaws. For some reason those go together. At first I thought the legs on your dread too short but when you painted it it came together. Needs more chains and spikes! I would try getting more little spikes and fixing them to those dog heads, and buying some of those little chains they use for jewellery, and put them all over the place. Especially on that Daemon Prince he could be more pimped out. Also I don't think that capes or drapery work too well with this theme you might want to avoid those.

Looking very nice. And I can understand that berzerker terms wouldn't care much about petty bolters when there's chainaxes around... Guess they can thow them at the enemy to represent guns?

Oh right, I like the daemon prince really much. Just don't overdo it with juggernaut heads.

Thanks a lot guys!

Meade: I like chains, and would like to use a lot more of them, but I'm not really into using real jewelry chains - I think they are a pain in the butt to glue and paint. Any good sources for plastic chains, preferably with skulls, etc.?

This afternoon I was about to assemble a couple of possessed, but I found a spare pair of terminator legs, and I wondered what to do with them - so I got the idea to make an Obliterator! I hate the GW ones, so I wanted to get a bit away from that. I was looking through my bitz box, and couldn't really decide on which arms I would use... So I got the idea to make him six limbed, with four arms.

Here he is:

The flail arm is from an ancient khorne blood slaughterer I painted when I was 11 or 12 - don't worry, I'll strip it before painting. I have no idea where the rest of the model is. He is basically made up from spare bits and bobs, cut to fit, and glued together, to make him as imposing as possible. I don't know if I'm in love with the head - should it be demonic, machinelike or khornate? Any suggestions are welcome as usual.

Edit: He isn't completely done - still needs some greenstuffing, and perhaps a few more bits.

I like that - and I'd say you should keep the head - but yes, it needs some green stuff to fill the joints and the like.

Thanks a lot guys!

I've looked a bit more at it, and googled some obliterator conversions, and it just doesn't seem bulky enough. I could green stuff it, but I'm afraid it'll just seem like a giant blob with weapons sticking out... Hmmm... I'll have to think about it.

Unfortunately I've run out of CSM and berzerker parts (I just used the bits I had in my bits box so far), so I can't really get any further on the heads for the terminators, jugger riders or any more berzerkers till they arrive, hopefully thursday.

Anyway, I've started a Kharn conversion very much based on this one:

http://www.the-vanus-temple.com/?p=715

I've got the body together, I'm just needing the head and chain axe.

Any tips on where to get plastic chains?

Well Guita, I would send you my extra plastic chains because I don't want them, if you want to trade PM if you want (I'm working on a large chaos force and I have a pile of extra bits like that I dont want)? Honestly though I don't see how you would have a problem with the jewellery chains. Maybe I don't have as much experience but it shouldn't be difficult as long as you use super glue and drill a hole where the chain goes. Also for painting them, you can get different colored ones or black/gunmetal/dark brass colored that essentially don't need painting if you shop around, or if not then your coat of primer should adhere to metal as well... I don't see why it would be hard and there is no substitute for real, bigass chains! I always like to use the real item rather than facsimile if I can.

I'm working on some obliterators too check out this guy: he would make a good khornate obliterator with some tweaking, more chains and skulls of course.

Thanks a lot, and absolutely. I've been out of the hobby for 15 years, and got started again a couple of months ago, because of the kids where I work - I work in a youths club. They started showing interest, and I sort of followed along. I'm amazed a how great the plastic models have become, and I love how easy they are to convert. Plastic models used to suck bigtime, and metal was a lot more work to convert - now I can cut up anything, and I am completely hooked. (It's also great actually being able to afford the models, being an adult and all that. ) I really like painting too, so don't worry, they will get painted - I'm just on a conversion roll right now, so that's what I'm focusing on. I'm really having great fun, and I am going to convert every single model in my warband.

Jwalker52 wrote:Are those grey knights helmets:0

Why yes, they are. I think they look great, the sharp edges and evil eyes having a khornate touch, and it's an added bonus to use them for the helmets of the GK's worst enemys.

DOH! That's what you get, when you're up 'till 4 in the morning, converting. Oh well. I also found out, after having finished the obliterator, that they can't use ammo based weapons. Which is great, now that he has 2 autocannons. Still, as I said earlier, I'm more of a modeler than a gamer, and I probably would have used them even if I had known.

I've gotten a little further on the obliterator, bulking him up, and he looks much better now I think. Pics to come.

Kharn in the works - I'm not sure that he's bulky enough, or that the head fits - it was just an experiment. I really like the old Kharn model (which I've converted a bit), but I wish he was a little bigger.

I got hold of another berzerker head, which I promptly made into a terminator head:

He looks pretty menacing, no?

And I've bulked out the obliterator with some ork burna boy chains, and other bits. I think I like this head better, but I can't decide which way he should be looking, or if its the right head for him:

Thanks a lot - really appreciate it!

To be honest, it's a pain getting them fit on the bases - I spend quite a bit of time grinding the bases, to get flat spots for the feet, and I pin them in place. However, I think they look great, gives them some nice added height, and they give you the opportunity to make some more dynamically posed models (running uphill, downhill, standing on rock, etc) with a lot less work than making the bases myself, so I think it's worth the effort.

Oh, I just found out that my FW lord Zhufor and berzerker parts have arrived - this will be epic!

So my GW and FW boxes arrived, and I'm having a blast looking through all the sprues, and putting together some great models.

First up is Lord Zhufor - funny thing, I stumbled across him about a year ago, while trawling the net, and remember thinking "If I played WH40k, I would get that guy!" I actually forgot about him when I got back into it, but now I've got one; the head is quite possibly the most evil head ever made by GW. I love it:

I made a new chainaxe for him, as his own looks a bit wimpy, reposed a bit, a made him a new trophy rack/icon.

A couple of berzerkers with jump packs (yes, I know they can't have jumppacks, and no, I don't care - of course berzerkers should have jump packs)

I also got a box of havocs, and was pretty disappointed when I found out the heavy weapons are metal. Oh well, back to the bits box. I made a custom autocannon, 3 more (or heavy bolters) to go:

I also got started on a Khorne Rhino - I was putting some models together with a buddy of mine last night, and he collects Ogres, and have two of the new warbeast kits, so he gave me the leftover parts - and I got this idea:

Quite a bit of way to go, but I reckon it'll be pretty good when it's finished.

As always, questions, comments and critic is welcomed.

I've got a defiler lying in a box, and a couple of things I need to exchange in my local GW shop - I'm going there tomorrow, and I need to find out if I should make a Defiler (converted of course) or a soul grinder? (ditto converted).

I'm thinking about one of the new ogre beasts as a HUGE demonic mount for a champion as well, and using the DE talos as the base for a demon engine. Any ideas?

Think a soul grinder feels a bit too daemonic IMO. The defiler design fits world eaters more (particularly if you also consider the Blood Slaughterer's design).

A Stonehorn as a daemonic mount? Rather a greater daemon! What would you use a lord on that thing as?

Hmmm... I may need to think about this... I really like the look of the soul grinder more than the defiler (someone on the net wrote "soul grinders challenged cousin" ), but I kinda like the idea of my warband having only a few deamons.

I have no idea what I would use it for. As mentioned earlier, I'm not really into gaming. I suppose I might play a few games, but I'm really into modelling, painting and fluff. As long as it looks good and is fluffy, it rocks in my mind.

zechariahsword wrote:OMG!

Thanks! It's really not very complicated. I used a furioso dread kit, a bloodcrusher head and collar, and the bloodcrusher standard for the back banner. The saw weapon is from an ork deff dread (or maybe a killa kan? I can't remember). I cut every imperial detail off it, used some creative cutting to repose the arms, and finished off by adding as many spiky bits as I could find - the ones on the wrists comes from the deff dread as well.

Were you thinking slaanesh? In that case a lot of chains, greenstuffed stretched leather bits, and monster parts would look great. I'm also thinking about a lot of tzeentch conversions - trouble is, though, that it is extremely unfluffy to have khorne marines alongside tzeentchian.

If that's what your Khorne Dread looks like, I'm worried I may mess my pants after seeing your Tzeentch (or Slaanesh if you ever decide to go that route in the future). I'm super excited to see anything you have next to post!

Oddly enough, my Dread plans are all for Khorne, Tzeentch, and Nurgle. I feel dreads don't fit Slaanesh well, although it can be pulled off. My armies are lead by Slaanesh for the most part, seeing as how followers of Slaanesh crave attention and admiration, whereas those working for them is everyone else.

I have 3 AoBR Dreads I was going to convert into Chaos Dreads for the 3 gods I listed above for Dreads. My Nurgle was going to be covered in tumors and wounds from greenstuff, for Tzeentch I was going to attempt something a like to a sarcophagus, but my Khorne one was going to end up being pretty bland and generic... not anymore! Your work has given me better ideas for my excessive need to kitbash.

I have an idea for at tzeentchian dread - how about using the cockatrice head?

I think it would look great, with greenstuffed feathers to conceal the joint, and perhaps make a power claw from the cockatrice claws. I also had an idea for a tzeentchian defiler/soul grinder - using the fantasy necrosphinx torso, plus assorted parts - I think it could look awesome.

BTW, I just read a piece of fluff, and an awesome idea for a Khorne defiler is forming in my head. Nope, you'll have to wait and see.

Also, I got to thinking - how about getting a fat belly from the fantasy giant, for the nurgle dread?

The belly may be a bit huge in scale to a dread, but I wouldn't know exactly as I don't own a WFB Giant.

The head of the Cockatrice would be amazing. Although I was thinking of using that specifically for a future Tzeentch DP.

Love your painting and converting.

I'm not a fan of the jugg head on the dread tbh. While the conversion is clean and well painted, and I understand what you are going for, it just looks over the top and sort of "Beast Wars transformers" to me.

Sort of overkill and distracts from the rest of the model.

But hey it did come out nice.

I don't know if I'll go through with the thousand sons - like I said, it's very unfluffy to field them (or slaanesh) on the same battlefield, but still - the models I could make if I combined chaos parts with tomb kings... *cues Homer drool sound*

CT Gamer: You know that theres weight behind the words, when an Ork collector calls your work "over the top"! Actually, I laughed about your beast wars transformers analogy - I haven't thought about those in 20 years! Still, since I didn't think of those myself, I guess it doesn't remind me of those - and I'm pretty happy with it, so I'll keep it as is.

This thread makes me think 40k needs a special rule where if an opposing army is painted sufficiently good enough, your units have to take a pinning test every turn, as they stare, dumbfounded, at how utterly incredible the opposing army looks.

Every time you have to remove one of these models from the table, a painting angel loses it's wings.

So, I took a long hard look at my Defiler kit, and concluded that it sucks. It really looks like a challenged robot spider, or something like that - and I decided to do something about that.

I was searching the web for fluff ideas, when I stumbled upon the Khorne Slaughterfiend Defiler - for those that haven't heard about it, it's basically a defiler, souped up for CC, but with the added twist that somehow a champion of khorne has been loony enough to bind it to his will, and use it as a mount. Also, berzerkers close by, will run close to it, and latch onto chains, etc, and use it as a transport. I loved this idea, and set out to create one.

The main things are, of course:

It has to have a mounted champion, not just a guy glued onto it, but actually controlling the thing.

There has to be some reasonable way to having it transport a unit of berzerkers.

I thought a bit about this, and came to the conclusion that something "flatter", like the brass scorpions that some people on the web have been building, would make for a good way to transport troops. Still, I didn't want it to be as big as a brass scorpion, and didn't really want to use 2 (!) defiler kits for it. So I grabbed my defiler kit, my bits box, glues and knives, and went to work.

This is the result - I still need to bulk up the tail a bit - I would have loved to have an extra defiler leg or claw, but I made one from some of the turret bits.

I think the chains hanging from the sides of the trophy racks add a nice touch, and give the berzerkers a way to latch onto the machine. I used some hobby chain, and used thin superglue to set them. It works pretty well, and it's a first for me.

As some of you have noticed, I used the skull from my rhino - I really liked the look of the rhino, but I needed the head for this guy more, and I'm just going to have to try to get another skull for the rhino. If any of you guys, or someone you know, has one to spare, it would be much appreciated.

Comments and critic is welcome!

Then I saw your defiler... amazing I love what you've done their with the brass scorpion look. Is that battle cannon hidden in the skull?

I think you need MOAR SKULLS.

but apart from that, the defiler is awesome.

to get a new head for your rhino, go and get a human skull, at least it will be authentic looking

More skulls? I'll see what I can do.

Actually, I HAVE access to a REAL human skull, believe it or not. My dad's a dentist (now retired), and back in the 60's when he studied to become one, they were required to buy one (no, he didn't charge someone, crying "Skulls for the dentist-god!" ), and since this was before the age of plastic (at least detailed pressuremolded plastic), they used real skulls. Poor people in India used to recieve a bunch of money, in return testamenting their earthly remains for purposes such as this. And so it was, that I grew up in a home with a real human skull on the top of the bookshelf. I used to love looking at it. Guess thats why I like Khorne.

But in all seriousness, should I get a larger human skull for the Rhino instead?

GiraffeX: Thanks a lot - really appreciate it. No, it's not a battle cannon - it's the original defiler head innards - I just needed something to mount the skulls on. Should've thought about the battlecannon.

I've just picked up one of those skulls for my World Eater Rhino, now just need to find a second.

Mine are going to be behind a Dozer blade so will look a bit different, I'll only be using the top part.

Just worked out the parts for my Rhinos are going to cost more than the rhinos themselves

Thanks - I'll keep that in mind! Actually, I just remembered that the father of one of the kids at work collects ogre kingdoms, and when he picked up his daughter (who collects slaanesh daemons! ), I asked him about the part, and he said I could have it.

Thanks! I don't think I'll do a soul grinder - I considered it, but I'd like my warband to be more marine based than daemon based. I've already made a dreadknight (see my sig), albeit a regular GK one. I actually like the chaos warmachines not being bipedal - the look more monstrous that way.

I've been converting a couple of characters for the warband.

First off, a Skull Preacher (the khorne equivalent of a chaplain). He's made from a finecast chaos lord, that I was given, that had some flaws (the heads have also been used), with a lord zhufor unhelmeted head (cut down in size to fit), and various space marine bits. It was a PITA to get the original legs dug out from the cape, but I think the result is worth it. Here he is, roaring litanies to Khorne out into the sky:

A random character - I call him Messor the Harvester of skulls:

Also got my berzerkers with jump packs finished (still missing a few spikes for the jump packs):

I've been fighting the urge to run raptors in my CSM because they're just not that good, but you have inspired me to convert some up anyway.

THE DEFILER IS AMAZING.

The rhino is cool, but for a model that will spend most of it's gaming life exploded or wrecked I think the ogre parts would be better served on a Land Raider (plus it has a wider face, won't look so wonky.)

Overall awesome work.

My local GW store has baneblade on sale, and when I saw the fantasy storm of magic skull tower and chaos sorcerer whirlwind/whatever, I got to thinking; how a bout a tower of skulls? Mwahahahaha...

Long range support doesn't fair well if your going to use it in games as chaos dreadnoughts have a good chance of frying your own troops.

Unless of course you just play for fun then go for it.

Hmm... I'll think about it.

In the meantime, I finally got my black surgeon of khorne finished. He took a while, because I wanted him to have the right look - as in, completely and utterly mad doctor, obsessed with blood and surgery. When he's not in battle, giving out combat drugs in plentiful rations, he's back at home performing the berzerker surgery on captured marines. I am really happy with his head - I got just the right look - he really looks crazy. I sought long and hard for heads, and of course I found this in my bits box. It's the head from the hanging corpse in the stonehorn (ogre) box, which I've shaved off the hair, and made a bunch of cuts in the skalp, inspired by pinhead (hellraiser) and the Sam Neill character in the film Event Horizon (very chaos-like film btw).

I also got started on the second dread. It looks pretty dull right now, compared to the other, but don't worry, it'll get suitably pimped, khorne style.

Lol, it's easy for me to wreck rhinos (Kharn be praised). Yeah dude I think the land raider will be a solid choice. You are doing awesome work with chains on your stuff. Thanks! The black surgeon seems pretty popular - I guess people just like mad doctors.

Here he is with some paint on. I deliberately stayed away from using all red, like the rest of the army, to distinguish him. I thought black was very appropiate as the opposite of the apothecarys white armour:

The highlights look a little lumpy so close up, but he looks pretty good IRL.

I've gotten a little further on dread #2. I decided that I didn't really like the positioning (leaning forward), so I ripped it apart (VERY hard to do, with the hip ball joint properly plasticglued. :S ), and repositioned it a bit. Also I got the knee bent, which is not easy on a dread either - lots of careful cutting. I put some more bits on it, and while he's far from finished, I'm beginning to like what I see.

I also reworked and repositioned the autocannon - needs an ammo belt, and more details, but getting there:

Oh, and I just picked up the DE Talos kit today - I've loved it since it came out, but didn't know what to do with it, and while I was looking at the box in the store, inspiration struck - A Daemon prince! I'm not happy with the guy with the jugger head, so I'll make a new one, based on the talos.

I am in the process of painting a couple of the foot troops (so I don't get caught up in painting all the characters first), and sheesh, it's taking a long time! I didn't consider at all how long it would take to properly highlight space marine armour PLUS getting all the gold trims done. Especially with shining gold, which doesn't seem to cover, unless I put on 2-3 coats. Do you know of a paint in a similar shade, that has good coverage?

Here's a couple of finished guys and some PIP:

It takes a long time getting all the extreme highlights there, but I kinda like the effect. What do you think? (I put the lines everywhere, not just where the highlights would normally be, to give a sort of glowing feel to the armour). I tried with much more subtle highligts at first, but the models just seemed way to dark, looking at them from more than a feet away - this way they "pop" more. (Pop-Khorne? )

No problem at all - please ask any questions you want. The autocannon is made from an ork warbikerz gun, with the bajonet being a fantasy orc sword. The handle is made from various bits. I used the handle from the fantasy orc sprue sword (the extra one) on this:

and I actually like it better. Other than that, just add some ammo belts and the nozzle is from the chaos tank sprue.

Been up all night converting - I'll take some pics tomorrow, there's some cool new guys joining the warband.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Big update!

I've started progress on the painting, and converted some more.

A little progress on the slaughterfiend:

Land raider under construction - needs lots more spikes:

Same for the storm raven (Carrion Assault ship). I'm going to put pointy wings on, a big skull, and other goodies:

Dread #2 is almost done - I'm considering making him a rifleman though, so I might have to make a new left arm.

I wasn't satisfied with the running terminator, so I made a new one - I like him a lot more:

My new berzerker squad - lots of work went into these poses:

Chain glaive:

Another interesting pose I had to try:

Champion with powerfist - I'm not sure about Kharns head on this one:

One of my favourites - with a HUGE chain axe:

And I've started painting my lord - for some reason the natural light at this time of year is screwing with the colours - I can't seem to get a good shot of him. I promise, it looks better IRL:

Let me hear what you think.

Awesome, love the berserker on the light post.

2 questions.

1. Whats on top of the storm raven? (I demand to see it! Haha)

2. What did you use for the ports on the side of the storm raven?

(Also, Kharns head looks good on there.)

Thanks mate!

1. It's the "port" wall from CoD with a lot of skulls in it - it's still very much in progress.

2. I actually had to look a bit to find out what it is - I just took them from my bitz box, but it's the sides from the defiler torso hull.

The slaughterfiend is looking very nice indeed. I also really like the berserker up the lamp post I was going to do a Night Lord in a similar pose, Very cool

I've started work on my Khorne Rhino using the same skull, have a look in my Chaos blog (last few pages) and let me know what you think.

I put another head on the champion - this one is a better fit:

I'm almost done converting my Chosen of Khorne (DC with jump packs) - the heads are temporary, to get an idea about the poses, until my FW renegade enforcers arrive - I'll use the heads from them:

Here's the psychos - it took a long time getting the poses perfect, but I'm pretty satisfied with the results - I need to get some resin jump packs though, since these are very heavy. They balance okay, but if they fall, they fall hard.

Champion with powerfist:

Psycho with chainscythe:

Exalted champion of Khorne (Reclusiarch or Chaplain)

Still needs some details and green stuff, but comments and ideas are welcomed.

Thanks!

Reanimator: LOL, no, I just traded with some guys on a danish forum.

Lord Skulk: All the heads are just plastic chaos heads. The Champion is the standard champion head, with the horns cut off. The one with the scythe is a possessed head, with berzerker bunny ears added.

BAN: I considered it for a while, but I don't think the mutation thing fits khorne very well, except for some having skull heads. Mutations are more fitting for Slaanesh, Nurgle and Tzeentch, imho.

That Defiler is amazing. It looks waaaaaaay better than the GW one (and I actually like the GW one!) and the paintjob is amazing! The paint just looks so... realistic. My models always look flat, but via blending and fading and all of those other fancy paint job terms that I'm probably misusing it looks excellent! And the Raptor Berzerkers are some of the best conversions I've seen in awhile. Their poses are amazing and they defiantly look Khornish. I'm eager to see more Khorne stuff from you!

LoneLictor: I just had a look a your minis, and if I may give you a piece of advice, it would be to thin your paints, and paint multiple thin layers to preserve detail, be as neat as you can (as in put the paint exactly where it needs to be), and use washes - that would definitely bring them to a very nice level. I like your colour scheme.

Thanks, btw. It is actually very simple. I did a basecoat of mechrite red, with a bit of chaos black (about same shade as scab red, with MUCH better coverage), stippled blood red on, washed with badab black straight out of the pot, and did the blood red edge highlights. The only thing that took more than a few minutes was the edge highlights, which I still find difficult and takes some time.

Both the conversions/repositioning (which I really love!) that make each model have character and life, and your painting (which thankfully doesn't detract from the awesome conversions) are beautifully done. I look forward to more! Also, how do you do those bases? I've recently been trying to get better with my bases. Thanks! My goal is definitely to have as much character as possible in every single model in the army - which means I am converting every single one. It takes a long time, but hey, I like doing it, and I am not planning on fielding them anytime soon. Now, I've been looking at my terminators and becoming more and more dissatisfied with them, so I'm selling them, and I am in the process of making new ones, with more action-like poses, based on the Terminator Lord. I've made 3 so far, and they look really good I think. Also on the worktable is a dreadclaw. (and the stormraven. And more troops. And the land raider. And getting paint on them. I need to stop buying and converting stuff, and get some paint on them! :-D )

The bases? That's just me cheating. They're chaos bases from Micro Art Studios. Great looking and not too expensive.

Thanks a lot, guys - I'm really overwhelmed by the response.

I'm going pretty strong on painting the squad of berzerkers with the lightpost guy, so they'll be finished soon, and the new terminators are coming along nicely as well. I had a buddy of mine come over last night, to paint together. He is the manager of the GW store in Denmark, and told me that I should definately enter the Armies on Parade (deadline 29th of november) - I'm very tempted to do it, since it would give me an excuse to make a nice display board.

Hello GuitaRasmus ,

Just been looking through this thread , and i have to say very well executed. At first i read the title and thought ok this could be something good , I'm so glad that i did this thread is really inspiring and full of great and creative ideas. It certainly want to make me dig out my old box of CSM !

The modelling on the first dread looks amazing and the paint scheme really pulled off the look of the model for me , keep up the great work. Will certainly be subscribing to this thread. Very keen on the idea of a display board , is there anything that you have in mind. I was thinking baybe a chaos warp gate ?

Good job + nice army

Thanks a lot! I really appreciate the feedback, it makes me want to do more. The net is fantastic for this sort of stuff, because you can get really inspired. For the display board, I think I'll use the temple of skulls as a centerpiece.

I've taken a few pics of the new terminators, based on the lord kit. It's going to be an expensive squad, but since they should be one of the centerpieces, I think it's worth it. I just wasn't satisfied with the old ones, and especially them not having lightning claws. These are quite a bit bigger than the standard chaos termi, and much more detailed. Also, like I mentioned earlier, I just didn't think that the poses of the old ones were up to par with the rest of the army. So, without further ado, here are the first 3. 2 more to go, which I think I will take in a different direction (weapons and poses)

As you can see, it did take quite a bit of cutting and greenstuffing to get them to charge:

Sounds like a really good idea , can't wait to see the display board coming together. The terminators look good but for some reasong i am never a fan of them can't quite work out why , however with the grey knight heads i think they will come out really good looking , can't wait to see some more painted models

Also you say about using different weapons on the next three. I personally would love to see something like a thunderhammer , maybe or maybe power axe seeing as your good at modelling

Once again good job.

Now, THAT's a big statement - there are so many incredibly talented people on here, and I often sit in awe when looking on peoples work. That said, thank you very much.

I've just put the finishing touches on the champion for the terminator squad, and this guy is so characterful that he might just take the place as my Khorne lord. Very nice conversions! Both with the Terminators and the Champion. The Terminators look very menacing with their poses and are great as is! The Champion's power axe is superb. His left food seems a tad off to me, though I can't quite tell since maybe it's jsut the picture angle... but it seems a bit too twisted and downward... not sure if this is true though, or just how the picture made it look. Also, maybe make the skulls hanging from the banner above him swing a bit more behind him. They seem a tad static. Though these are all very minor things... he's very very cool looking!

I've started work on the display board - I would really like input on this, as this is a first for me. Too crowded? Needs more levels? More terrain? Anything?

I like the layout of the display board. How do you plan do do the ground? Will you have a little path similar to the stairs and jagged rocks all over the ground (like on the unit bases), or just sand (which would be easier for standing guys on)?

Right you are - and it's not finished yet. I still need to make the claws more clawlike, and add lots of spiky bits. And thanks for the kind words!

I've dabbled a bit more - In order to break up the landscape, I've decided to do a chaos symbol "growing out" of the rock - so it'll have several different levels, made of foam, and lots of pebble, rock, sand, etc. Here's a pic, if you can make out the idea. The chaos symbol also functions as a path leading to the temple.

As usual incredible models and the display board looks great with the chaos symbol breaking up the terrain. How about a river of blood on the lowest level coming from the big skulls in the back left corner. would be very Khorne, same with piles of skulls.

I thought a lot about it, and I'm not really into the whole mutation thing regarding Khorne - perhaps some face mutations, but not so much with crab claws, tentacles, wings, etc. However, it really annoys me that they tip over so easy, so I bit the bullet and ordered a bunch of these:

I think they'll look good.

Sort of - it wasn't difficult, but it was a bit tricky to hold the doors in the right position, while positioning the wings. The wings are very snug - actually I had to scrape a bit of plastic of them to get them to fit. I still need to add lots of bits, make it more spiky, and extend the wings a bit.

Thanks! I'm starting to get some paint on the terminators, and I'll hopefully post a painted update sometime soon. They do take a long time, though - it takes about an hour just to basecoat it, courtesy of all those damn ridges and gold trims, that have to be basecoated brown first.

In the meantime, I've done a piece of fluff for my warband, and the commander, Lord Khelok. Be easy on me, I've never done this before, and english is only my second language.

“As he stood on the bridge of the battle barge, silently watching Abaddon instructing his captains on his tactics for the pending Dread Claw assault, Khelok heard a whispering; “Do it. For the glory of Khorne. Kill him. Take his skull. Let me taste his flesh.”. The voice belonged to the daemon Khyil’Dem’Awl, an unusually spiteful and bloodthirsty bloodletter. It resided within the archaic engine and blade of his Bloodfeeder, Bane, a massive glaive topped with a rotor blade of unknown alloy, capable of cutting through steel, ceramic, bone and flesh with equal ease. It had taken tens of thousands of skulls, and would continue to do so, with Khelok wielding it, as long as the Blood God saw fit. Khelok had aquired it for what seemed like aeons ago, crushing every imperial guardsman, space marine and grey knight in his path to it. He had gotten word of it residing deep within the vaults of the inquisition on the planet Dumane. The inquisition had likely found it out of pure dumb luck, and, not knowing it’s true power, but sensing it’s taint from the Dark Lord, had decided to keep it safe. However, he had heard the daemons whispers across the warp, and heeding the call, he had summoned his warband, and launched an assault on the Imperial Fortress on Dumane. His berzerkers had crushed every guardsman in their path, but the Inquisitors and their seers had sought refuge deep within the Imperial Fortress, in the vaults where Bane was encased in psychic chains. Their psykers had called for help, and a force of Imperial Fists and Grey Knights had arrived, bringing severe losses on his warband. However, the Lord of Skulls had different plans, and summoned 8 Bloodthirsters, when the battle was looking bleak. Khelok had looked upon his squad of Khornes chosen with a mixture of wonder and delight, as wings, fanged maws, bulging muscles and and spikes burst through ceramite armour. The bloodthirsters quickly turned the battle, all but crushing every space marine.

Khelok, still gazing through the windows of Abaddons command bridge, looking at the stars, savoured for the moment the memory of the Imperial Fists commander, lying on the stairs, bones shattered from a blow from Kheloks powerfist. “Where is your god-emperor now?” Khelok roared, as he raised his foot and crushed the commanders head under the weight of his ancient terminator armour. Alas, his skull would have made a fine trophy, but there would be many more.

As the wounded and dying space marines lay in the halls of the fortress, the black surgeons wandered amongst them, gathering progenoid glands from the unsalvageable, and dragging the wounded warriors of the feeble and pathetic emperor to the operating rooms of the battlebarge, where Kheloks most skilled black surgeon, Kroenen, would transform these once mindless followers of the imperiums false preachings into glorious warriors of the Blood God, wielding torture, brain surgery and chemicals as his preferred tools. As he strode through the barren bloodspattered halls of the fortress, he heard the daemons whispers grow stronger. His bodyguard of chosen, encased in terminator armour, ripped through the blast doors, as they got closer to the heart of the fortress, the vault. Their lightning claws sliced through the last of the blast doors, and Khelok strode into the room. A dozen of quivering adepts, psykers and inquisitors were kneeling, facing away from Khelok and his bodyguard, deep in prayer, without a doubt knowing their doom was at hand. Khelok knew his loyal bodyguards thirsted for blood, and with a word from him, they lunged forward, transforming the loyalists into a fine mist of blood and tissue with their claws. Khelok gazed at a corner of the room, where an ominous glow emerged. There, fastened with steel straps, the daemon weapon sat. He strode across the room, and looked upon it. It was a savage piece of weaponry, spartan and pure in its construction. A massive saw blade emerging from an engine, the workings of which seemed impossible, protruding into a scarred and battle damaged shaft of black metal. The only decoration was a strip of cloth, it seemed, wrapped around the handle. Upon closer inspection, he saw the strip was not cloth, but rather a ragged long piece of human flesh, roughly sewn together from many pieces, each adorned with tattoos of the Aquila, an honour only bestowed upon the greatest warriors of the false emperor. A weapon worthy of a true servant of Khorne. Khelok ripped the straps of the wall, grabbing the weapon in his hand, and felt a rush of rage and power rippling through his darkened blood. The daemon spoke; “I’m yours. Take me. Together we shall gather millions of skulls for our lord, and leave a river of blood in our wake. Take me.”

Khelok stood by the tactica screen, only a few feet away from Abaddon and his commanders, captains, lieutenants and sycophants. “Do it. Take his skull. I want to taste his Tzeentch and Slaanesh tainted blood.” The daemon spoke once again, urging him to kill Abaddon. Such was the mind of daemons – never caring whose blood flowed, as long as it flowed. He had long ago grown used to the daemons constant whispering, craving blood, carnage and skulls. He felt the shaft of the weapon tremble in his hand – he calmed the daemon by quenching the handle, once more showing it who was the weapon and who was the wielder. It hadn’t always been like this. Not long after he had aquired Bane, he had duelled with a champion of Khorne simpleminded enough to challenge him. As the champion had hurled himself toward Khelok, Khelok swung Bane, and sliced straight through the berzerker mid air, and the torso fell to the ground, dark red and black blood splattered on Kheloks armour. The daemon within, infuriated by the disappointment of the quickness of the battle, somehow impossibly took control of Kheloks arm, and redirected the swing of the weapon slicing open Kheloks skull, and removing his eye. Thanks to the Blood God, he was not mortally wounded, but it taught him a valuable lesson – to wield Bane was not only to fight your opponent, but also to fight Bane itself. He was never to let down his guard, for the bound daemon was just as eager to spill Kheloks blood, as his opponent’s.

His bionic eye whirred as it focused on the tactica display – the clicks and whirrs a constant reminder of that day where he saw the true nature of Bane. Kheloks mind had wandered… As it so often did when the other commanders spoke of virus bombings, trenching and worst of all – psychic barrages. Where was the glory in that? How could you go without seeing the enemys terrified visage, the moment they realize that they will be yet another skull among the billions at the base of his lord Khornes throne?
Abaddon thankfully realized that this was not the way of the World Eaters, and made extensive use of Kheloks warband as shock and assault troops, throwing them into the midst of battle, to great effect. Such was the rage of his warband, that they could wipe out an entire company of space marines, and even the most bitter and battle hardened black legionaire dared not come near, until their berzerker rage had worn off. Abaddon gave out their assignment; Dumane had been repopulated, and the imperial fortress once again housed an astropath – an astropath, that could possibly catch drift of the Abaddons plans, and so had to be annihilated. The Imperial Fists forces on the planet proved a bigger task than the cultists could handle, so Kheloks warband was to be drop assaulted inside the fortress walls, and wreak havoc.
“Nabiskho” Khelok spoke, as he walked aside his long time battle brother and lieutenant; “You are to assemble the warband, ready them for the slaughter and load my Carrion ship – we will attack in 18 hours. Awaken your Slaughterfiend – the feeble loyalists will see who the true God is.”

Glad that you like it! I just sat down for a couple of hours, and wrote the next installment.

As Nabiskho, Kheloks lieutenant, walked towards the battlebarges barracks, he felt a rush of blood to the head. He had been a berzerker of Khorne for so long that even the thought of pending battle could bring his surgically implanted glands, residing in his corrupted brain, to begin to release adrenalin and reducing serotonin, the process involved in inducing the berzerker rage, so feared by ally and foe of the World Eaters alike. He had long ago learnt to control it to some degree, only allowing himself to give in to the rage in the midst of battle, unlike the lunatic Kharn – he was without a doubt one of the greatest warriors of Khorne to have ever lived, but he was such a liability that very few lords dared send for his help – and somehow he still managed to show up without a warning, even on the most desolate of worlds, ready for slaughter, as if the Lord of Skulls himself had summoned him. True, he was a force to be reckoned with, able to turn the tide and wreaking havoc, but so strong was the rage with him, that few of Khornes chosen dared to be in his vicinity when all foes were slain.

However, such was the nature of the rage for many a berzerker – only the most experienced and strong of will was able to control it, and if a berzerker had been gripped by the rage for a full day, it could often take him another full day to calm down.

Nabiskho walked past the vault of the battlebarge, opening the bulkhead and entering the huge chamber. Here was the armoury of the World Eaters. He looked at the walls, where the many terrifying chainaxes, chainswords and glaives of the berzerkers sat, no doubt eager to have their archaic teeth whirring once again, cutting through blood and bone alike, bringing glory to the Blood God. A smile, revealing a mouth full of sharp jagged teeth appeared on Nabiskhos face. His features were indeed terrifying. He had long ago ripped the service studs of the false preachings from his skull, leaving indented craterlike scars. The mark of his lord was prominent, a never healing sore on his bleak bald scalp, and his brows, cheeks and and features had grown more bigger, granting him a beastlike appearance, in order to bring fear to the heart of his enemies. He relished in this – knowing that the last thing on this world his victims felt, was pure and utter terror. His power armour was ridden with spikes and jagged edges all over. Nary a spot could be touched unprotected, without drawing blood. His gloved hand dragged across the edge of his chainsaw, hanging on the wall. He longed for the sensation of feeling the handle with his own skin, but he had not been out of his armour for millennia. Such was the blessing of Khorne – the wearer of the armour was slowly but surely fused with his armour over the course of years, ceramite and skin becoming one. To remove his armour would be the same as removing his muscles and skin, not an ordeal to be survived. However, this gift was a great boon – it granted the wearer agility in wearing the armour that could never be accomplished by the equivalent worn by the armour worn by the pathetic loyalists.

He strode across the room approaching the warmachines. He stopped by a massive shell, bedecked with skulls, spikes, and brazen trims, hunched over, deep in slumber. The warmachine was thrice his height, a behemoth of a dreadnought, scarred with bullet holes and chipped paint from thousands of battles. The ceramite plates had once been blue and white, the colour of their origin, but now only a crimson red was to be seen – Nabiskho knew not if he had been repainted in the favoured colour of their lord, or if it was from the bloodspattered remains of its tens of thousands of victims. A dozen massive chains held it against the wall, for long ago they had learnt that a Dreadnought of Khorne, withheld from battle, was not something to be taken lightly. It had broken free from the vault, and maddened by the absence of battle, rampaged through the corridors of the battle barge, taking many a berzerkers skull before they had it chained down once again. The sarcophagus of the Dreadnought was adorned with a huge juggernaut head, eyes glowing brightly green in the midst of battle, but in its slumber only deep black holes were to be seen. “Soon” Nabiskho spoke. “Soon, my old friend, you will be released from your chains.” The dreadnought, now named Ragnarok, had once been his battlebrother Nestley, and they had fought many a battle under the command of Khelok during the heresy. Upon being mortally wounded, Nestley had been placed in the sarcophagus, once again ready to slay for their lord. No follower of the emperor could stand against the raging behemoth, charging towards them, power claw glowing and saw whirring.

Nabiskho walked towards a dimly illuminated corner of the room. There his steed stood; a gigantic piece of machinery resembling a scorpion, a long extinct creature from the days of yore, on Terra. Gigantic legs, adorned with crimson armour plates, brazen trims and hundreds of pistons, carried it into battles, where its huge claws could crush anything in its path. Its tail held a massive battlecannon, responsibly for bringing down many a battletank. Nabiskho look upon it in awe and joy. A true defiler of Khorne. He had found it on the barren planet of Klekron, where it rampaged through the terrified human encampments, and revering in its destruction, he had decided to tame it. It had taken a fierce battle, costing the lives of most of his bodyguard, but in the end he had managed to leap onto the back of the beast and as the defiler reared, he slammed his fist into its skull, and grapping hold of the horns on its skeletal head, had taken control of the beast. As he held onto it, he roared: “I am Nabiskho, chosen of Khorne, slaughterer of thousands! You are to bow before my will!” and the daemon within had calmed. Whether it was through his will, his lord Khornes might, or if the daemon within had sensed an opportunity to be brought to bigger slaughters than Klekron had to offer, was unknown. Nabiskho cared not. He had rode it hundreds of times since, and struck an alliance of sorts with the daemon. Since he had had its hull modified with reins of chains, and a platform to stand on, as he rode the gargantuan slaughterfiend into battle. The platform was ridden with spikes, frames and rails, bristling with chains, allowing squads of fellow World Eater to latch onto it, carrying them into the heat of battle, in manner terrifying to behold.

As the lieutenant stood and beheld his great steed, cultists scurried about the chamber, preparing weapons for the forthcoming assault and lubing the pistons and machinery of the slaughterfiend with oils and fluids. A hunchbacked cultist, dressed in tattered robes, approached Nabiskho. “My lord…” he spoke. “… We are almost finished preparing your steed for battle. However, it seems to be in a sort of slumber, from which we cannot awaken it. What are we to do?” Nabiskho smiled, baring his grizzly teeth. “That, my servant, is where you come into play.” Puzzled the cultist looked upon him. “Come with me.” Nabiskho said. They walked over to the slaughterfiend, where the other cultists curiously looked at the lieutenant and the cultist – the lieutenant towering over the cultist, being almost twice as high. “The slaughterfiend must taste human blood regularly, in order to stay awake.” Nabiskho said. “I see, my lord. Shall I fetch one of the thralls, from the torture chambers?” the cultist answered. “No, my servant, as I said, that is your assignment and destiny.” Nabiskho said, as he quickly grabbed the cultist be the head, crushing his skull with armoured fist, as the implosion of blood splattered over Nabiskhos armour. Nabiskho ripped the bloody pulp that was once the cultists head from body, spine still attached, and squeezed the fluids and blood unto the gleaming brass symbol on the slaughterfiends forehead, as the remaining cultists looked upon terrified, but not saying a word. As the blood ran down into the beasts skeletal mouth, the eyes began to dimly glow an ominous green. “Awaken, my loyal steed.” Nabiskho spoke. “We are going to war.”
A growly impossibly deep voice roared from the beasts jaws, and echoed through the chamber; “Warrrrr…”.

I love the paintjob and you certainly made those beautifully positioned models look that much better. The bases are great too... though to me they look a bit too lively/lush compared to the grim looks of the Khorn Killers. Definitely a nice contract, and well done in both areas, just a bit off to me... but maybe that grass just hasn't been corrupted and then slaughtered yet?

Thanks a lot guys! Really appreciate all the kind words.

A new champion for the dynamic berzerkers:

I also wanted to test out my idea for the Death Company/Chosen squad, and did this guy - still needs greenstuffing, but I think the pose is pretty cool:

That pose is pretty cool! I've seen that skull helm a few times before. Is that from the WoC sprue? I think the front leg could use some re-positioning. It still looks a bit like it's standing on the ground. Maybe bring the knee up towards the chest a little and straighten out the foot?

Keep up the good work! Subbed!

Hmm... I'll look at the legs. It IS a difficult pose to get right.

The skull helmet is from the forgeworld renegade enforcers - I had to have those heads.

Looks really good! However it seems like a little too much movement/speed for the bloated, diseased Death Guard. Still, I like the pose very much!

Ah - sorry if I didn't make myself clear; it's not Death Guard, it's Death Company (aka Chosen) - I intend to use these as blood angels, until GW writes up a decent codex for chaos.

Perhaps a move ready-to-slice-you-open pose would be him gripping his axe with two hands, over his head, readying himself to leap at his target? Also, great work! I love your Lord Zhufor(Where's his head from?) and your Khornate dread.

Sounds like a good idea, but I'm having a bit of difficulty seeing it - could you post a pic or drawing showing what you're describing?

Thanks a lot - the helmet for lord zhufor comes with the kit, just like the bare head.

Could really use some opinions on it, as I'm unsure if its too much compared to my other one. On the other hand, they shouldn't be too alike, should they? The rider is just a mockup to see the pose, I'll make a different one.

Something along the lines of this. I tried to draw it as dynamic as I could, but I can't pull off the way the body/legs are twisted in that pose. Hope you get the idea!

Oh, and the slaughterfiend looks perfect, 'cept that perhaps the marine shouldn't be there? Afterall, it is a daemon bound within an engine, and chances are it'll tear that marine off. But still, even with the marine on it, it looks great.

Now those are some nice Termies you've added since I last stuck my head in for a gander.

RE lightbox. I'm from a design background, and 'lightbox' to me means something like a pizza box with a white light inside, a white interior, and a translucent white lid, used for tracing. I'm guessing your lightbox is more like a micro photography studio?

Okay so just read this thread from page 1 until the very end. Obviously I'm a bit too late to the party to note everything I liked, but I have to say in general, everything you've posted is painted/converted to a magnificant standard! Yup, you're absolutely right. I used to study graphic design, and I've drawn all my life, so that was a brainfart.

Do you have any tips for lighting? That's my biggest problem with photography - getting enough light on the minis.

The position of the marine jumping over the wall is awesome. Though, I suppose if you were inspired to fix it a bit. His legs should be a bit more forward, preparing his feet for the landing and continuing charge at his target. Think of a Parkour runner jumping over a rail. You have to keep your legs in front of you

Bad picture, but it shows you the basic idea...
Spoiler:

And of course you wouldn't want to put the legs that high up on a marine, as it would look weird/not work in the armor, but at least a little would be more accurate. No real need though. The model looks good as is too.

On the topic of that Defiler's pose. I love it! It's not at all over the top! That pose makes it so much more imposing/frightening compared to your other amazingly well done defiler.

The defilers pose is awesome! but it does raise a question about what you are going to do with the lower jaw?

Already figured out - I worked a bit more on it:

I just need a tail for it, as well as a new one for the other slaughterfiend - I'm trying to find either a defiler claw or leg, but they seem to be sold out in every bitz site.
