Every so often an auction appears that makes me go, "Wait... wut?" The latest example is a buy-it-now auction for Baal Predators with 5 listed as available. I'll give you a moment to figure out what's wrong there.

I was poking fun about the fact that Aussies pays for so much more, that $100 is probably still a "normal price"
hence the --> xD

Well when you said "catering to Aussies" you made it sound like he was selling them to Australia at higher prices because it's still cheaper for them than buying locally.

At least then I could try to make sense of this, seeing as how it's within the US only it's completely fething bonkers.

The Baal Predator guy is just trying to rip people off, but he's technically not doing anything wrong.

The Necron "Monolith" is actively trying to deceive people by the way he's created his listing. If you can't sell Flayed Ones asFlayed Ones, don't sell them. I feel badly for the 1 person who actually bought one. But Ebay has a report function for a reason but it's on the buyer to read everything too.

Please report these when you find them - having the title and actual item SO different is so far removed from Ebay's approved practices that even Ebay's notoriously miopic CS department can't ignore complaints about them.

You, of course, could also message the seller to find out for sure what he's selling. Monolith or Flayed Ones? It could very well be an honsest mistake.

Myself I stay away from sellers with a low rating and check out the feedback from a seller I'm considering buying from.

I'd be willing to bet that the monolith one is actually an honest mistake. The auction he listed right before that was actually flayed ones, so it's probably a copy/paste error. Everything else he's selling is a few dollar below retail.

Yep, because a saved template saves time ( especially sometimes i want my auctions to end back to back, not 5 minutes apart )
because if you have like 20 related stuff to sell, thats 1 hour and 40 mins.

Ya im the mean type of seller, i put them almost simultaneously to make it harder for people to snipe xD
thus increasing the bid they have to win

A bit more on topic, I also love seeing occasional auctions for currently-in-production models, with a starting price at twice or more of retail, with "OOP COLLECTORS MODEL" plastered all over the listing.

Are they currently available? The supply from Forgeworld is very patchy, they have stocks when they decide to run up a batch but often there are none. These epic titans do sell at a high price when unavailable and yes, £30-40 each it not unheard of.

Take what you "think" i said, ONE step further.
See, you assume that people that uses esnipe is the people I create the auction for.
No. the people that will pay higher price will be the ones that will attempt to offer "a higher than esnipe bid" just to win.

Two possible explanations here.

The first is that the FW titles (in fact, all of GW rulebooks) are not available to the book trade. Anyone not familiar with the company but familiar with bookselling will check the availability under the ISBN and get back records that make it look like it's out of print. Now, there are a good deal of opportunistic people who buy up OOP books and whack the prices up to something astronomically stupid. It's worth their while doing it for the 1 in 1000 people who actually are willing to pay for it. It's disgusting to me, because it artificially inflates second hand book prices as others see the price and imitate it. So we end up with a ridiculous premium on out of print books. But, hey, what can you do? So, it could be that this guy is one of those guys. I'd bet on it, personally.

The second is that it's a typo.

But who is going to inquire "Hey, I saw you have this book for $1800 bucks, how much are you selling it for?"

Particularly when its easily available from GW or FW direct for a ton less.

I had heard that some companies use programs to add a small percentage to the cost of an item, so that it compares similar items, and charges a tad more, as a way to make updating webstores easier. When multiple companies do that, the prices jump up across the board as the bots battle it out.

I'd bet its on the odd chance somebody actually plunks down the money for it. I guess it depends on how much it actually costs to post it in the first place. +shrug+

It's a very common practice for TF sellers on Amazon. A $50-100 G1 figure will go up on Amazon for 200% mark up, 2 weeks later, it's down to the average price.

It's an interest drum up to get them on the map.

So rather than just put it at the price they intend to sell it at, they put up a fake price so they can, what, look up and see what the price is meant to be? Which takes all of ten minutes? I can't say as this strikes me as very logical. Sounds more like trying your luck at suckering someone and then lowering the price when you fail to sell it.

I get offers all the time for free listings on ebay. I read a while back that most of the time those are placeholder listings or something that are then modified at a later time to have the correct information. not really sure on that, as I am not really an experienced ebay seller.

Ebay gives normal sellers 50 free listings a month. If you own a store you do not get 50 free as a default, but you do get lower prices for each listing. Ebay also has free listings day a few times a month. I do speak from experience as I am top rated seller and complete at least 100 transactions a month.

On a side note check this out. Not a hobby auction, but still totally ridiculous.

I'd honestly be careful if you've ever brought/plan to buy anything from the TrollTrader.

A few years ago i brought various Necromunda models from him which included a group of 5 Necromunda ratskin braves, when they arrived i admired them for a few days then promptly put them away with the rest of my ratskins.

A few months later when the urge to gaze upon them kicked in i noticed i had 2 copies of one of the braves, an original that i purchased from GW and the model that i purchased from trolltrader. After browsing the two i noticed that the one from trolltrader was a fairly obvious recast, it was made from an easily bent metal and it was noticeably thinner than the original GW model.

Unfortunately i had already left him feedback so couldn't take any action, so be warned that anything ever purchased from the Trolltrader could potentially be a recast.

Nope, but all it takes is one desperate fool to keep the price high. Another 'favourite' of mine is MarkfieldMinatures (sic). You'll recognise the name if you trawl ebay for Epic models. He's the one that lists a single Epic knight for (I kid you not) £19:99, IG moles for £39:99 each, FW Epic buildings for near £100. He even managed to collar some Warmonger Titan parts a few years ago. They're still sat at buy it now for extreme prices. He even runs multiple accounts for some reason that I can't quite figure.

I've bought from TrollTrader in the past. Got a bag of Skaven bitz for £15, was reasonably happy with it. Had a couple of metal minis, a few of the monkeyrats, and lots of weapons, arms, banners, etc. Got the Island of Blood Warlock Engineer for £1.49, and 10 40mm bases for £1. Postage on top, I still felt like they were worthwhile purchases.

So, yeah. I'm not saying the guy doesn't list things for stupid money, but he does some okay deals, too. I'm happy with what I got. Sounds like he's someone to avoid if I want older minis, though.

If you buy 'new' from TrollTrader they are usually pretty good deals. I got one of the MAS District-5 apartment blocks, and they were £20, which is as far as I know the cheapest in the UK. Like you say though, beware the older OOP stuff (although to be fair, they are generally very highly priced on ebay these days).

It's a shame you can't post comments on auctions like you can on Youtube or such. Some of these auctions make me seriously question the sanity of the people posting them. Are they delusional? Are they aware that most of the time they have to pay fees just to put the auction up? It's just frustrating to know that such "less than averagely smart" people exist.

So true, when i see someone selling at a stupid price, i always click on other sellers Items and often see not a single offer on 20 or so auctions.
I know that for alot of people the minis mean alot to them and it would take a decent offer for them to part with it, I guess they are opening the ads just to see if someone will be stupid enough.
My pet hate is when they tot up the prices that everything cost and then start it a little cheaper, not realising that the fact the models have been assembled already (normally quite badly) and covered in about three thick layers of paint takes the value down alot.

When I see something ridiculous, I simply chuckle and move along. I just can't see how it's logical or healthy to get bent out of shape about it.

Maybe, but if you look you will see i never said hate, i said "pet Hate" which is a bit different really, its a term for a "minor annoyance".
Not quite all out hate hehe.

Fair enough.
Probably a simple difference in communication styles across the pond, then. The term you describe would be called a "pet peeve" over here. "Pet" is simply a word used to describe something favored or preferred. Typically, the word "hate" has a pretty common definition here.

pro painted eh? bol... i mean, that is incorrect, drybrushing is not pro-painting, the silver is blochy the blues have just been painted over the silver giving a bad effect, £875... nope not for models that are just below average painted and will be hell to strip.. Ebay folly

I don't necessarily agree. Now, I'm not saying that it's worth the money. I didn't take the time to compare the model price vs. auction price to see how much they're charging for the painting, but I don't think the painting looks bad at all. I've seen commission painters - people who paint models for money with a growing client list - who don't do that good a job. "Pro painted" doesn't bother me in that auction at all.

While that may not be a 10/10 paint job, it is a fine above standard tabletop quality job. I don't see why you would need to strip it, it looks fine to me. That may not mean that the pricing for it is right, but it is worlds better than most "pro" painted things on ebay.

"Pro painted" is so misleading anyway...
Pro is short for professional. So as long as you have taken money in exchange for painting, you're a pro painter - no matter the level of painting you've got.

My buddy could pay me $5 to prime and basecoat his army, and I can call myself a pro painter.

Very much this. It isn't like the guy said 'Golden Daemon quality'. Just pro.

Strictly speaking, this is untrue.
To be a professional painter, it would have to be your profession; your job; your means of support.

You could not accurately describe yourself as a professional painter in the example you give above. You could describe yourself as a commercial painter, at best. Commercial and professional are not synonymous, though they are often treated as such.

@MM: I agree with that. For example, a baseball player who plays in the minor leagues, but has to work at Kroger in the off-season to pay his bills would, at best, be considered "semi-professional."

Being a teacher is a profession; tutoring kids out of your house for extra money in the evenings is not.

I should also say that there are varying degrees of "professional" paintjobs. Some are very basic with no shading or highlighting, others are Golden Daemon winners, and there's everything in between.

I think that's because TrollTrader buys off other players, then sells them back. I've gotten a fair number of minis off of him and I haven't had any issues (then again, I have to pay Canadian prices here so everything looks like a steal).

Maybe he was trying to type "2.00"?

I really hope so !!
Even if someone did accidently buy that and then get billed with £200 shipping, no one in their right mind would pay that, hes a seller too, so he cannot even leave bad feedback if the payment was refused by the buyer.

I've bought from their site before, and they usually ship pretty fast (free internationally, too!) and offer good service. That's just for small bits and hobby supplies, though.

Maybe for all the OOP stuff and bitz, they're more or less just reselling them secondhand and can't really be guarantee their condition or veracity? Just my two cents.

My guess is he wants people to make offers rather than use buy it now. Probably because he thinks that's the way to maximize profits. (afraid to put too low a price on the buy it now, yet also afraid he'll have to sell them for $0.99 in a fluke auction)

Then perhaps your technique still rings true despite the size / details of the photo.

A good example ... if you can imagine a whole army that is dry brushed.

From far away + proper lighting + small picture, they might look as smooth as airbrush.
that is if you dont look closer.

Essex Girl certainly likes her Squats - oooeer missus.

A look at the OOP section of her webstore is a real eye opener on what you might get for some of the ugliest models GW produced.

Wonder how much I will might for an unopened box of Space Dwarves (28mm) ?

OK, I have spent a LOT of money on models over the years, and I will pay over the odds to secure a particular piece I want for my collection. But never, ever could I justify spending over £80 on a single resin lasgun. When the winning bidder opens that package is he going to really regret it? Whats the point as you wouldn't dare use it on a model, just going to put it on display? I really don't get it...

Well it is a 54 mm lasgun, so at least it will be on a prominent model, not drowned between a hundred guardsmen.
edit: although I personally probably couldn't use it on a model. Just the thought of the value plummeting the moment my paintbrush hits the resin.

It's also a relatively common term for the 'package' level of a car model, which may be what is intended here. For example, may cars are available in a 'Sport', 'Limited', 'Deluxe' package, or trim level. I assume this may be what is intended here. It's pretty rarely used for female body parts, at least locally. I think I've heard it used in that sense in a movie once or twice. Maybe that use is regional?

Apparently, if you look at the last pic on the auction, if you line up the rhinos with the roads on their roof, it makes a landing strip for your landspeeders.

I can sorta see that though as it is painted to a reasonable standard and is enough of a standalone that you wouldn't have to worry about it exactly matching the rest of the army. Now if it goes for much more than retail I'll be disappointed, but retail value for something like that isn't bad.

How much smack would it require to think building a three part mobile runway on top of APCs would not only be cool (Not to mention that land speeders are VTOL), but also appeal to the average buyer?

Back in the golden days of Epic 40,000 I was considering converting an Imperator into an aircraft carrier complete with Nimitz style launch deck in place of the imperial city.

Don't blame GW for price increases, they're just looking at Ebay.

I posted the same thing on another forum, FW heresy era SM armour going for 2quid less then FW price why would you bother for 2 quid if anything is wrong with them the come back with FW would be so much easier,

In regards to the auctions where the GW price is lower then the ebay price i see that a lot on ebay, hell a few years ago I started buying PAYG mobiles from carphonewarehouse that were on sale and putting them stright on ebay and making 20% more some people just dont know how to shop around and assume ebay is the cheapest.

I'm fairly certain that such things are from people selling the items off site, so instead of taking down the auction they just change the price to something ridiculous with no description, knowing that no one will buy it.

I'm not aware of any penalties for taking down auctions early though, so not really sure of the purpose of it.

Acutally It is more like a long term auction, not sure if ebay pricing is the same as the UK but we have listing fee's as well as final value fee's, if the product is out of stock the retailer will just change the auction title and price so no one will buy it and leave it running until they need to add another auction, then they just edit that auction with new title pictures details and price and it saves paying another listing fee.

For auctions with BIN extra pictures sub title the listing fee's do add up when you have a lot so instead of just ending the auction and 'losing' the listing fee they do this instead

By the looks of the 5% off it is probably a blanket discount and wasnt specifly applied to just that one advert

Edit, just checked the link and he has two auctions with high prices and no pics or description, one of those say army is being parted out (spilt up?) and BIN price is 2k dollars reduced by 5% again and on both auctions the offers where quite a few months ago so it does look like those are long term auctions, dont be surprised to see in the future these having new items on there not for 10k

"Only about 5 protoypes of the dressing gown were ever made."

...So, I thought it would be a great idea to spill ink on it while painting in it and wear it around the house until I eventually wore holes in the armpits!

LOL

Surely, that's worth 100 GBP.

Erm.

"Sprues have been removed from the box for shipping" means he's not sending the original box, but everything that came in the box is included.
And shipping in the US is 19.99, not 54 dollars.

This seems like a normal ebay "deal" - not amazing, but decent.

Ah my bad! must of totally misread that, plus the shipping is going to have been adjusted for the uk then the only problem with that ad then is the fact he is selling something he hasnt got, never a good idea but thanks for pointing that out! i did think it was strange considering the amount of other GW stuff he has for sale,

That's about $27 USD.
So, you're looking at $4.50 USD per model. Yeah. That's a pretty good price. They usually sell for $6 to $10 here in the US, depending on condition.

It seems after not selling, the Games workshop dressing gown is re listed and the price has increased substantially.
Must be one of the most expensive dressing gowns ever, and it looks cheap as piss though it still may be a bargain as it has only a few rips and some paint down it !

I'm worried about someone who thinks a bath robe with 'Warhammer World' embroidered on it is worth that much money.

This is a drawing of a spider. I value it at $233.95

Art is valued a little differently than clothing.

I did a mural for the old Dakka Dakka shop. It was roughly 5'x9' which is about $4500.00 as a friendly price.

But I'm too cool for such nonsense and charged $400 in product.

Saddly half of my products were stolen from my car while I was at work.

Undead Dragon, Wood Elf Dragon, Skaven Doom Bell and several other things I don't even remember. I had only owned them for like a day.

Not sure what creeps me more, that he's painting a giant table in a bathrobe, or that other people might have been with him while he's painting in a bath robe.

interesting, a folly on the part of the buyer and not the seller. Haven't seen that since people sold Xbox360 boxes empty.

I started tha auction before the box was released the 7 day auction ended on the 2nd, day after the box set was released so they were the only pictures I could find at the time. I thought I was clear enough in the title and description and wasnt trying to be misleading at all. I had another 10 auctions with the same picture and simular descriptions, none of those went for silly money. The guy has had the models since tuesday and have had no email or feedback yet
