Hey there people!
Been lurkin here for ages, but decided to start sharing my own stuff too. Its not much, and it will be a continual growing and changing delusion, but bear with me... It'll be fun at least.
I used to play necromunda extensively way back when, but since a couple of moves lost touch with all the players. Now I did get some friends interested in some post-apocalyptic style gaming, so I decided I needed miniatures, terrain etc...
I'll show some of the stuff i have so far, and will keep on updating new things.

What I'd like you guys to do is comment, and comment a lot. But constructive! I love ooh's and aaah's as much as anyone, but its the criticism I can learn from!
So shoot down anything if ya think I can learn from it
Anyways, here goes, with my first piece of totally scratch terrain...

Its totally cardboard, and I don't think I actually measured anything. It was just fitting, cutting, fitting and maybe even cutting too much. But heck, I had fun!
Eventually its the paint that made it work, even for myself...

On to miniatures...
They're all combinations of space marine scouts, eldar wyches, catachans, cadians, and militia. Over time more and more GS (grey stuff) is becoming a standard on my models. You'll see once ya reached snow white

Please, again, comment all you like

And here she is, mostly greenstuff...

SNowWhite...!!!

but disturbed hehehe

They're random models, some belonging to gangs, others being just that, singles. As we combine different games to play our own post apocalyptic thingies, a single character is perfectly acceptable. Please, comment on all the minis, ask questions, post remarks!!

Thanx,

MauS

Yep, some need to be dusted off by the way

Wow Man! Welcome! You have some awesome stuff! The crane/loader thing is scratchbuilt? It looks just like an old Tonka truck, that's what I tfirst thought the cab was from! Very cool painting too, the rust is quite effective on the yellow paint. As for criticism....you need more rivets

Madness of Maus... Still Alive! @ 2012/01/19 23:58:06

Post by: MauS

Rivets... Hmm...

DSteingass

The crane is just good old cardboard, the thin stuff used to seperate layers in shipping boxes. At my workplace we recieve all the medicine in boxes with this layering. Its about the thickness of cereal packaging. The rust worked beautifully yeah. I now noticed i totally forgot to paint and weather the inside of the base construct... Hrm... touchup needed there...

But rivets...

Hmm...

Hey man, the best modeling material will always be free modeling material! Rivets or skulls make anything instantly grimdark

Madness of Maus... Still Alive! @ 2012/01/20 03:13:31

Post by: MauS

Yeah... been trying to avoid too much grimdark. I'd like the terrain to be useable in a lot of different games and settings... But rivets can't hurt. I promise, my next terrain piece will have rivets.

Madness of Maus... Still Alive! @ 2012/01/20 03:16:28

Yes, Rivets are more timeless than diamonds.

I like your terrain and those minis are all full of character! Although you could probably straighten the hazard lines with some tape. Otherwise i don't have too much critism. great work.

hey...that is the second thread i follow now thanks to daves nudge in your direction...

a fellow cardboard builder! a merry welcome to dakka mate! i too dabbled quiet a bit with cardboard and made tanks and other stuff from that... and as for rivets... i use a holepunch set with different diameters to make quite convincing cardboard rivets... stuck on via a needle and then glue them on with PVA and you have a nice uneven surface that takes all to well to drybrushing!
the cardboard i like the most is the one from old collegepaper pads... they have a slightly riffeld surface and can look quite good as wooden texture...

if you are interrested go and visit my gallery...there you find at least two cardboard tanks that i pride myself are not imidiatly recognizable for their materials...

as for your minis... wow what a charcterful bunch...
that red/roagne ninja is by far my favorite mini of yours... he would be cool to see in a full squad... would you care as to share how you did his hat? i like that look very much...as i am currently making a brishish flavored steampunk army something like this could look quite good on some concripts or penial legionairs...from china^^
also i would like to ask how you did those clips on the flintlock pistol...this looks very convincing... i might need to nick that idea for my own weapon design scheme...

how much non GS bitz did you use on snowwhite? seems only head and arms are bitz...the rest is all sculpted? very convincing but a bit more muscular than i like my snowwhite LOL

also...what i really would like to see is more agnled shots of your minis... only one of each brings us to miss out on so many good features of your stuff... and i see there is in the background of your pics lots of nice stuff i have even now springing questions in my mind...

hope to see way more of that cool stuff!

Micro Mark sells an interesting, although expensive little tool called a Parallel Cutter
http://www.micromark.com/parallel-cutter,8715.html
This thing interests me for masking smaller hazard stripes, and for masking off panel lines that I have already inked or washed with the airbrush. The smallest masking tape I have seen is 10mm wide stuff by Tamiya.
And cutting regular tape into consistently-sized smaller strips seems difficult.

Here's to answering all this...
First of, my penal ninja....
He's just regular cadian and catachan command squad bits. I used the crouching legs of a heavy weapon, and two suitable sword arms. The medic head (bald, with goggles) and a nice round bit of milliput. I shaped this flat and round, and when partially dry, indented it to look a bit conic in shape. Presto, one straw hat, simply done. I need to do some more soon, and will then post a little tutorial here.

The clips on the flintlocks... They are also pretty easily made. The catachan command sprue has a big serrated sword on it, with a straight edge on both sides, and a little bloodsleave. I just cut this up, took two straight pieces, and directly glued them to the weapons. The flintlock arms themselves are empire militia.

Snow WHite, yeah, she's a different story. My first nearly all milliput model.
Actually she was an accident. I used some GS to build up regular trousers on the guy in blue with the bolter, as to give him a proper-stuka-gothic-pants like my own, including the neon green lining. The blob of GS I had left ended up on the table, end soon found its way in the hands of my GF. She started rolling and turning it, fiddling as she does while wondering what the heck I am doing, when suddenly I saw the beginnings of a dress in it.
Now, my GF is a big disney fan, and soon the subject became disney princesses. So I decided to build snow white from there.
The bottom half as such is green stuff, while the buff muscular upper body is I believe all Dark eldar Wych. The hair is also greenstuff, and she's carrying a Dark eldar trident-thingy cut to shape. Also she's toting one of my new 'seven-dwarf-pattern' bolters/autoguns.

I'll post more pictures later, I've still to upload lots and lots more. Cardboard shuttles, a refinery, several loose bits and pieces, en at least 40 different models, all converted. I hate doing stuff the original way.

Anyways, if there's anything you guys want close-ups of, just tell me, and i'll see what I can do. Now first to dust of some stuff

Cheers,

MauS

now that is a sweet delivery of explanations...

so the coneshaped head looks more difficult than actualy is... ok...i am currently learning to use GS and my recent works are not that good...but i hopefully get better...^^

and i think you must have a pretty good eye for details...if a bloodsleave can be a mag for you!°° that is sure imaginative to say the least!

as for the snowwhite... well isn´t it nice to have GF that spices up the imagination and inspiration?

and by all means...post anything that you are able to come up with...if i have to sak for something special it would be that blue building that is in the background of some pics...

and...more views with different agnles of your recent minis!

well that snowwhite makes me every time i see her/him chuckle^^ your seven dwarves" pattern bolter... is that a termie bolter or a vehicle SM bolter? with added grip and stock?

the blue squad looks very good...i would like to see a closeup of that base... is it texturized or did you just use a flat 2D methode to make it look raised...? just highlights?

that APC has a very nice urban camo...very convincing!

by the way your pics are now way better... much more focused... would love to see some of these minis in daylight tho... nothing beats daylight^^

More

hopefully^^

The bases are all just paint on flat bases. I paint them Vallejo Green grey, place some black lines, and highlight these on two sides with 50%greengrey/50%white. Then I 'low'light the other two sides with USA Tan or USA Field Drab. It immediately looks three-dee You can see the same type of bases in my earlier post. All finished models will get these bases. When the base is done, the model is done. (actually, a model is never done, but at that time i consider it so. If no, i never finish anything)

The bolter is a regular imperial guard cadian lasgun with the mag cut off. It was cut directly after the mag, and the end part of a space marine bolter (cut just before the handgrip) was glued to the rear. Instant Seven-Dwarf pattern boltgun , lasgun or autogun (whatever the gang can afford, its multi-possible)

The APC is a russian BRDM-2, scale 1/35. The paintjob is SU-27 Flanker or Mig 29 -style...

Post by: Viktor von Domm

ah now i see how you did the SD pattern bolter...clever idea...but may i ask...did you leave the wing of the aquilla on purpose? it is just one wing now...it doesn´t look bad but i am a most curious one^^

so i thought... flat bases made by clever painting skills into 3D...cool!

Madness of Maus... Still Alive! @ 2012/01/20 21:47:35

Post by: MauS

Did I leave it on purpose... No...

I cut the bolter and only then noticed i had forgotten to shave it off. It works better when the bolter is still intact, i have something to hold on to that way. But it seemed an almost perfect half eagle, so i decided to let it stick. So it turned out a bonus, but I cannot take credit for things that happen by accident, however good the outcome may be...

lol...honesty gets you much further ...always^^... i had to ask becuase in some way it reminded me of the ravenwing of the DA...have a unfinished force of DA and when you work with bitz to spice up your SM you bought second hand you get to use these halfwings a lot^^

And the next batch:

First off, on popular demand, the blue building, followed by the green building

Nothing fancy, so army men tripwire, some cardboard, the accidental KRASH bit... But it breaks line of sight, and adds a height level.
Speaking of height levels... the green building:

And a tree

Now on to some modded weaponry:

And angles, characters, thingies:

Not the best picture i shot, i know

More to come, stay tuned!!

Post by: Viktor von Domm

that pumpaction conversion i have seen from time to time...you used a bolter muzzle,eh?
that small laspistol thingy is very cute...cut up lasgun?
and my favorite has to be that HMP looking lasgun with the sights...is that again a catachan sword gone magazine? never saw that used before... thats what i like when new guys here on dakka come up with their stuff...always new and original stuff to see...!!!

and that crakced base looks even more stunning!

the blue building looks very good...i have to ask tho...that webbed window (or whatever it should pose as) structure on the front...what is it made of? also...don´t shy away for shwing in the futire some work in progress pics... always nice to see how peeps are tackling certain ideas...

as for the green building... first some critizisms...i would ahve not used flat cardboard here for the ladders... they look a tad too flat... more wooden sticks...or these long matches you might be able to get...heck even china wooden eating sticks would be good...but i think you are far from finished with this one...but the general shape is very promising...!

also i like how you mix WHFB stuff like militia bodies and then mount these then on Imperial guard torsos... i have done so on numerous times too...

and some time ago i have seen that methode of making palms/trees from...cones too... iirc they even used tp coat them with PVA and then tunr them in grass...

The pinecones I used a lot when building my 1/35 Vietnam diorama two years ago. They work better as palms than most aftermarket resin can ever achieve.

The green building was a try at building something fully cardboard. It failed I guess, and a new one will be done in plasticard and foamboard soon. But for gaming purposes it works.

The blue building's 'window' as you call it is the base of a WWII 1/35 scale mortar. I haven't actually considered it a window yet

The Mag is indeed a cut up sword, yep. The fancy laspistol itself is a boltpistol without mag and a lasgun nozzle. It also has a SM scout lasersight.

Post by: Viktor von Domm

wouldn´t say failed to the green one...it isn´t just finished...there are many nice features... and like some have pointed out...rivets will almost everytime help to make a structure more convincing!

as you describe your conversions they become more clear to me... now i see those bitz and cuts that i would need to copy those too...very inventive!

also...well window or whatever^^ but it sure looks nice and meaningful...without meaning something in particular^^

Its usually just fidling with bits and my knife

After that its piecing things together. I try to give each model a bit of personality, so everyone is unique. Not much stock stuff here lol.

Edited my last picture post , it has even more pictures... some more weaponry too, and Cars! I love Cars!
And there's always more in my galery

Feel free to shoot at all of it people!!!

actually i was a bit confused...thought i grow forgetfull in my old days^^
these minis are all with character aplenty! great poses and you truly aim for individuality!

as you point out that you love cars...what scale are these? and where do you find them... i tried to get some cars...but either the kids are too fast and grab them earlier or they don´t fit the scale...

i would like to see you paint that still unprimed laspistol and tau" sword wielder...that is a very cool idea! a powerweapon? there is so many ideas here! i really have to take notes^^

specially that first of your newly added pics...the rocker with those nice pants...lol...

your painting style is very clean and more comicesque...something i cant do myself as i don´t have that good an eye hand coordination but i really like seeing that style...!

Madness of Maus... Still Alive! @ 2012/01/20 23:28:45

Post by: MauS

Viktor, thank you for all your kind words. Ya startin ta make me blush

The cars are all scaled 1:43. Looks good enough with models on bases i guess... It should be 1:48 really, but see if ya can find those Nope...

More painting will be done over the weekend. I'm trying to commit to just picking 5 and finishing them. But with 40 or so on the bench, thats hard. I like them all too much... And there's so many ideas for even more...

When painting i try to just make it look good on table. Stuff like eyes and thingies i have yet to perfect. I do love to use clear colour schemes yas, and contrast on table and in my models. And any building mistakes I try to 'fix' with paint.

I'll see if i can select the lasgun thingy in the five to be painted this weekend. I should be able to do that I guess...

Madness of Maus... Still Alive! @ 2012/01/20 23:37:44

Misfits have a gazillion crazy fans, me being one of them! But if I have to build them all... I need more bits!

The punk has te become one of at least a group of 5, so the mohawk man is a possibility. But he'll have to go to the end of the list for now. The 5 first to be finished have been decided. I will first finish Henri Quatorze's Distorted Buccaneers...
That is
-the two flintlock guy
-the two-handed chainsword guy
-the portable cannon man
-the scoped-bayonetted-blunderbus dude
-the lasgun laspistol fallen nobleman

we'll see what comes after

Did any of you ever see that movie Rowdy Roddy Piper was in? Where there were aliens taking over earth but they were disguised as humans and you had to wear special glasses to see them as they really were. I think it was called "Them" or "They" or something. It was pretty ok but I think it was meant to be aserious film and came off as campy....

GUYS!
Back on topic
I'm in the process of painting mr. Beerbelly, and it finally happened... I'm at a loss for the colours. I want to give him a parka of sorts, and a decent pair of civilian pants, but for the life of me cannot decide on colours...

So i'd like suggestions really. The bloke has to look civilian, and he's going to look a 'little' down on his luck. My camera is currently recharging, i'll post a pic of what I have done to him so far as soon as its full, but what colours would you guys suggest?

Madness of Maus... Still Alive! @ 2012/01/23 14:11:52

Post by: Scarper

Tattoos! Preferably really faded, and stretched out as he gained weight

And a brighter colour like red or blue could be weathered a little more easily to show that he was 'down on his luck'?

I don't think I've actually commented on here yet, but amazing amazing eclectic stuff. Subbed!

How about the jacket being a black / grey to look like faded leather, and have his trousers as a very faded (stonewashed) denim?

I've been thinking about this guy a good bit because he reminds me of my uncle. I was thinking that instead of bald maybe you could give him a Picard-esque bald pattern. You know hair all around but not on top. Then you go for the really aging metal head look by making it long and stringy. Or, if you prefer, think of Richard O'Brien's Riff Raff from Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Thanx for all the ideas guys...
I decided to base his clothing a bit on a friend of mine who had at one time a serious drinking problem. He could always be found wearing the same outfit, and it was easily recogniseable. Hence the purple/yellow parka. To offset this i decided on plain grey trousers. The Picard hair was the plan from the get-go
below is what i've done to him so far. Its just the basic colors, no highlights or shading yet. I've got to go and see a movie now, and get some nice steak somewheres. It seems my GF has her birthday today

Enjoy the pics people!!

Chest hair is on my to-do list for sure... a sort of 5 o'clock chest-shadow that is...

Well, by popular demand, here's the parts list:

- 1 regular round base
- 1 set of empire militia legs (the tight leggings one, with the codpiece)
- 1 catachan heavy weapons torso
- 1 empire militia spiked club right arm
- 1 empire militia stretched bow left arm
- 1 empire militia head (the one with the metal skull-cap)
- 1 tamiya accesoires clear bottle
- lotta milliput grey stuff (belly, hair, pants, club)

Next one i do i'll take pictures of the working proces, and try to do a how-to...

Thanx for all the good comments guys!! That keeps me going

Question: How bout those colors? Do they work, or are they too much?

Thanx for all the ideas again people! Still thinking about how to make a fro-pick, but i'll get there somehow. For now though I'll post another few WIP pictures, and the final pictures of Snowy White. Her base is done, hence she is done. I know myself well enough to limit myself. If I do not, I just keep doing stuff to her (nasty stuff too)...

Anyways, enjoy, and comment, criticize, ooh aaah and such... (specially on snowy white's status, and any advice concerning Soul-Fro is also welcome)

SnowWhite done:

Seeing her now on-screen there are some things i have to re-do. The studs on her belly for one, and add a bit of depth to her collar... Anything else i'm missing?

Soul-Fro:

Concerning Fro i'd like some advice on how to do his skin. I dont want to make him too light, but I also want to see the details in his skin. I hardly ever paint black skin, so any advice here is more than welcome. Also still thinking bout the color of his outfit. I'm thinking either Bobby Farrell white, or rastafari red-green-yellow. Any ideas?

I'm off to do some more bases on 'finished' models, so I hope I can post even more later today...

Greetz, and thanx for all the comments,

MauS

Where are the flared or bell-bottoms trousers?

Madness of Maus... Still Alive! @ 2012/01/25 15:54:28

Post by: MauS

@ Selvaggio: Yes, the flared trouwers... They are curing out as we speak
I tend to do things all bungled up. At times i'm painting while I know there are still details to add or remove. But usually seeing the color in advance gives me ideas and inspiration on how to do more to a model. That does unfortunately mean that i hardly ever finish a model. Hence my basing rule

Love love love the colour scheme on the fat guy - the jacket stripe absolutely sold it for me. The pose just screams a kind of inebriated arrogance, and you nailed the face. Ace work!

I can also honestly say I've never seen someone recreate Disney princesses for Necromunda before either, so kudos for being first on that one I feel like maybe her waist it a tiny bit thin, but that really suits the character, I suppose, and it's only from one angle. Nice job on the hair! Can't wait to see how the afro guy turns out - I know it's been mentioned a couple of times, but have you considered a little afro comb sticking out the top? A tiny bit of plasticard would sell it really well, and if you could sculpt it into a gang logo or something similar all the better! Keep it up man, this stuff is brilliant

if you can take a bit of criticism... here it comes... that shadow on the staff wielding arm... i think it is too wide... i suggest you make it slimmer...other than that i think it is a cool mini... i have a slight problem with the base dress combo... too much yellow on one section of the mini... but i see for the purpose of the mini that the base ties her in to the rest of your gang... also snowy has to have the yellod dress... but i hope you see my point here even if there is no way to do anything about it...

the afro ganger... did you sculpt that hair??? stunnig... and i think those militia legs wont ever be associated for me to not seventy disco style again...^^ cool combination...!

as for the movie...saw it a while ago as a teaser wip...this will be very interesting...i didn´t see it in the vid...when will it hit the theatres?

Madness of Maus... Still Alive! @ 2012/01/25 22:47:35

Post by: MauS

The movie will be first premiered during the Berlin movie Festival in Februari. I've been following the development since the early start some three years ago.

Good call on the shadowline on her arm. I'll slim that down.
As for the yellow... It will remain as it is, keep the Snowwhite link intact. My GF wants a Cinderella, sleeping beauty, Jasmine and Ariel too now

The fro is my own sculpt yes, and an easy one at that. Just a blob of GS, pushed onto the head, shaped round and dotted with the tip of my X-acto.

His legs are no longer recognisable as the militia legs. They are now tight flared trousers. DISCO fever people... The suit will be a crisp white jumpsuit with golden yellow trim

Still not convinced on the fro-comb though...

glad i could help... your stuff is great and i like that you are able to take the odd criticism...it is seldom given here... but much needed to get better... if you see something that deosn´t swing with my own stuff... be as blunt as you can^^

never did hair with GS for now... maybe i will try that later... after all with a knife tip you can do freaky things while sculpting!

@ Vik : If I couldn't take criticism, I'd better not post here. Thats why we blog, to receive any and all feedback, including criticism

Anyways, some more WIPs:

Broke my own rule here, and have the base on Fro done already. I was basing others, and decided to continue on with this one too... The suit needs more glossy white and shiney gold, and the skin needs another three of four layers of highlighting. The entire face needs to be done, but here's where we are with Fro though:

Some more vehicular WIP:

And another future bounty hunter/ganger/survivor:

Any criticism or comment is welcome people! Questions will also be answered

wow... those pants...of the new guy... cool...just again GS work to make them bootcut? wow...also i like how you have mixed the bitz on this one...a bit of GS work is needed on the handrail of the gun... then the rail looks very good... might steel that idea too^^...that underslung grenade launcher needs some work too.... as is it is a bit lopsided...

the biker i like already... using HWteam arms froma gunner for the steering arms...brilliant idea!!! what kit dod you use the plane wings and jet from?...very good idea to use such a small scale kit for that idea!...

the only suggestion i can make on fro is that the white needs to be layered more to not have the basecat shine through.... some parts still look as if there is a hole...which in reality of course there isn´t... maybe next time use a foundation paint before going white? i use dheneb stone before aplying white... but the whole mini is such an amazong piece!... i think on some future model tho you should let the straped legs stay as is ... they too had that wonderful ´70s look to them....oh and i love the balck skin... looks really convincing! (yes i say black... sorry guys... i wont use other terms as i think this is all nonsense...it is just a word... i have colored friends and i think they would be ok with that word too...)

Madness of Maus... Still Alive! @ 2012/01/26 14:15:06

Post by: MauS

@ Viktor:

Good things again all of them

The pants is indeed only GS, worked up around the boot to make the pants ankle-length. I loved how this one turned out to look like the old WWII falschirmjäger pants. His rifle needs GS filling indeed, and the top bar i think is too thick. So it needs some sanding too.
The underslung grenade-launcher is in fact not a grenade launcher, but a flashlight... Must steal the grenade-launcher plan tho

The jetbike parts are SM bike and 1/72 cheapass Italeri F16C. The detailing will use various parts and thinges from where-ever I can find them. (SM backpacks, KRASH bits, said F16)

The white on Fro is supposed to look torn and damaged at places, thats why I actually sculpted some holes and the torn edges along his shoulders. The problem is that the entire thing looks way too worn now, and I cannot get the white clean enough yet to make it look like just worn at the intended places. I guess more white layers might help yeah...

As for the black skin... Its going to turn out just a tad bit lighter i think, after all the highlighting. But I like it so far, its convincing black, but the detail shows through in the shading, something I thought would be more difficult.

Thanx for your extra set of eyes man, appreciate it!!!

OMG, the white bellbottoms rock! And the new cargo pants are kicking ass!

I have found when painting black skin, that thinned dwarf flesh highlights can be surprisingly effective over dark flesh or even bestial brown base skintone (but not too much) you almost want to blend it on the high points like cheeks, nose bridge, lips, etc.. Using flesh wash is also effective for shading over brown basecoat, as it gives more suddle color variations.

This pic is gak, but that is how I did this guy. Of course, your lighter clothing will help contrast a lot better than my green fatigues.

It needs more color, or more contrast or shade around the weathering. Just a little something to seperate the two colors... Or is it the pic?

ok... i just love this piece... problem i am facing is... can´t decide atm if it is camo or weathering on the wings i see... it is probably weathering ...but for me it looks like very good and unique camo...for weathering it is not ragged looking enough... but as camo it would be a very neat thing... love the front with the teeth too... one minor thing tho... if i had been you i had added a bit of plastic card to the wings before painting... the connection between the wings and the bike "body" looks a bit "not enough"... if you understand me... would have been a bit more convincing if fleshed out...

but the paintjob looks very cool!

oh... and on the seat i see a major ugly moldline...

Madness of Maus... Still Alive! @ 2012/01/28 23:59:07

Post by: dsteingass

The leading edges of any wings would be scratched in straight lines, as the speed of the bike whipped sand and gravel, etc. past it. Everything else looks awesome!

Madness of Maus... Still Alive! @ 2012/01/29 00:47:36

I use the sponge left from the case tray to do weathering and I like the effect, try it out, just pick some color on the sponge and gently put on the piece You want to get "ruined".

I came here cuz I thought you had RT SM jetbikes and I was about to get super jelly. But this is even better than sm Jetbikes. I really want to go make gangs of awesome people now too. Too bad I only have SM and demon bits. I think it would be cool to make like a Planet of the Apes style ape gang of like human trappers. lol

Thanx!
Best part is I have spare shizzle enough to make some ten more

Dont think I will tho, as I no longer play space marines, and have no need for ten Jetbikes in my Necropocalypse campaign.
What I do have a need for is Zombies tho... best start making them by the dozens, as the first weekend of battles is nearing. Its almost the 17th of February, and that means my annual birthday game weekend... Necropocalypse will be heavily featured. I have enough survivors to give all players a couple of characters... But I do need the Zeds...

Working on them now, maybe I can post some later tonight

Automatically Appended Next Post:
well, a quick paint helps me make my 'dead'line... (pun intended )
I present to you in full ombopocalypse glory, the first two of the dead!
Yes, the square basing is 'intentional'. Due to my extensive swapping of bits, I have run out of round bases. that is, I dont have some 40 of them, the amount of Zeds I will need... But I do have square bases amassed, and the players that will attend the Annual Gamefest that is my birthday don't know the game yet anyways. As I borrow rules from various systems to enhance necropocalypse, I figure having 'the enemy' on clearly different bases will help them to decide who to shoot, and who not to shoot (They obviously still can if they want, its still necromunda )

Anyways, comments are always welcomed people!!
Enjoy

Shoot me people! Comments and criticisms please!!!!!!

cool zombies...one day i want to go wild with zombies too... of course only hobby wise^^

the kneeling Z is spot on...very gory and all...like the mix of bitz you used...
have you decided about the base design yet?

the second one looks very good too...the face specially...! how did you get that zombie head into a spare cadian helmet?
and then... he has a powerweapon??? i thought these living carcasses are so dumb they are unable to use doorknobs...hmmm...anyway...^^ the sword looks very cool and sufficiently sparkly^^
one thing tho... i think he hasn´t got the guts for being a wounded^^ no , what i menat before the pun to say is that i think the guts could be a bit more gory... there is only few blodd running and all...but other than that ... very good work...

so ...38 still to go? lol

@ Vik: Thanx for the reaction man! The basing will be the same as all the others, as you can see at the zombie with powerweapon base...

Speaking of him... his powerweapon is for show only i'm afraid... none of my zombies actually use weapons... its just what they carried around in life...

His head is mostly just the face. There's not much of the skull behind it left It was a PITA to fit that head in. I ended up cutting most of the head away and scraping out the inside of the helmet. Not sure if i'll do that again...

So you think they need more blood? I'm really not sure, don't want to go over the top with that...

38 more at least yeah...
I figure out of one box of 20 WHFB zombies is should be able to make some 40 Its just mixin an matchin

Post by: Viktor von Domm

well GW is a miser of a company but i doubt you could get more than 20 out of a box of 20 from any other company than GW^^ so this might actually work...

even if those filthy undead cant wield weapons i sure would use the odd lasgun as a club or other stuff on those lines...

will your gaming board be done in a likewise manner as your bases? i think we need to see some new footage of your works... i am intrigued...^^

i have long ago heavyly thought to make this conversion with head and helmet to my catachan guys... and kept from doing it because of the fiddly work it sure would have been... i see now that i was right in terms of the work needed... but i should have tried it on my own...as the outcome is very rewarding!!!

as for the blood issue... dripping bloody zombies...with too much blood and gore and intestines and bones and gak...and ...what was your question again?

Youch, thats a bummer. The max you can work in the UK is 12 days straight, as you ahve to have 1 day off in 7 or 2 in 14.

well these regulations always have to be considered with a certain kind of job... some peeps have quite different working hours... if a job needs to be done...then you have to keep in the job for as long as it takes to finish what you are currently doing... tho these kind of jobs are fairly common...

I desperately wanna take pics of all my buildings to show tomorrow.

if everything tuns out good and hopefully it will...then coming august i will start an aprenticeship to become a nursery nurse...i then will work in a school to assist the teacher... and your worklife shows that you must have a sheer endless suply of nerves and understanding... this is truly not something easy! and doing that in a good way...i would say that resembles something of a true calling...

Ah, the wait is over people! At least it sort of is. I find i still need to get to know my camera a bit. Shot some 200 pictures, and only about 50 are sharp enough. Hrm...
Anyways, I'll still post them, but the chronology of the fight will be out the window. I'll try to talk you all through anyway.
Please feel free to post questions, remarks, stuff you want more shots of etc..

Situation:
A small settlement near a refinery.

Gangs involved:
-Little sister's Snow white's merry men
-Maus' Lawless Lawmen

Task at hand: Chance encounter

***

The merry men set up at the refinery, the lawmen at the outskirts of town.

Both sides use their first two turns just to advance. Aside from a juve and a heavy hiyacking a car, the merry men seem to go for a full assault, with all their close combat prowess, while the Lawmen use the cover of their big bad APC.

The APC attacks the out in the open merry men, and jams. The lawmen disperse into cover, as the merry men enter the hamlet from their side.

Pot shots are taken here and there as the merry men close in. Luck must certainly be with little sister when a shot from her punk with missile launcher blows up the APC, killing its driver. The gunner gets out unscathed. He is then besieged by the merry men.

All out combat breaks out, with the gunner of the APC cut down by a drunk with bat, and the only close combat Lawman cut down by The Oriental.
Snowwhite manages to shoot one of the Lawmen inside the building, even while they blaze away at the just arrived Cayenne with merry juve and heavy.

With nerly half my gang gone, i bottled... Not of my own willing mind you, the dice forced me.

Snow white fought the Law, and she won...

Any and all comments welcome people !

LOL...nice battle... and it yet again shows me how much fun you can have with munda... smaller armies...in fact gangs that just scream to make totally individual models for and lots of nice and cool looking terrain pieces... tho i have to say... grim dark never looked so cheerful as on your table

by the way... what are these new grey looking and grafitti treated buildings made of? is it MDF? they look sturdy...and where they airbrushed or just the ole paint from a can treatment? anyway...the grafitti really makes the rock^^

i think when i see this... since my older son is getting to school this summer... i need to make a table worth of terrain so that we can play munda together soon too... the only fact that stops me for now is that he still can´t read...but after that is achieved...there will be fun times ahead!!!

very nice work...terrain and battlereport alike!^^

cheers, vik

Its foamboard all. Nice and cheerfull mostly due to the green underground i'm afraid. I need to ge some suitable gray boards. It'll make a world of difference. The buildings are modular of sorts, as in stackable. That way you can easily create height when needed.
You should really give it a go. Small gangs that actually grow in experience and skill will keep the youngsters more interested. After all, if you use th same guys for a couple of games, they become really badass...

Post by: Viktor von Domm

yup...besides being an old RPG player it is the very esence of gaming i like... used to play all the big rpg strategic games on PC...

well the cheerfulness i sorta liked...but true...some nice rotten roads or other concrete looking undergrounds would be of course better for a certain kind of mood you want to play with^^

stackable buildings is always a good idea... we don´t live all in big castles with lots of room for complete tables to stay set at all times now?^^

ah... foamboard...i should have thought of that!

Post by: MauS

They are honestly not that hard to do. Biggest poblem I have is getting all the walls nice and straight, but fo all you guys with a decent metal ruler and sharp hobby knife that should no be hard.
Anyways, the process is a follows.

Take a piece of foamboard. (2 layers of cardboard with foam inbetween, most hobby shops have it)
I use 3 mm thickness.

Next, mark out pieces of 8 cm broad, and as long as you can make with the piece of board you have. I buy them in 90x90 cm, so i get strips 90 cm long, and 8 cm across. Cut them at the lengths of the walls you intend to make.
Inner walls should be about 5 mm (0.5 cm) shorter than outer walls, so they fit snuggly inside.
Mark out doors and windows. My doors and windows will be at 4,5 cm height, allowing most models to stand in the doorways. They are 3 cm wide. Windows start 2cm up from the floor.
Cut out all the doors and windows you want.
Presto, walls!

Cut out a piece of foam board the size of the building you want. This will be the base. Make it 1 cm longer and broader as the wall length you intend to use.
Ergo, if my wall is 10 cm, my base will be 11 cm.

Now, cut another piece of board the same size as the base. This is now the roof, or if you are ambitious, the base of the second floor

Use simple white glue. Mine comes from the 1 euro shop, and works like a charm. Glue the walls together, by glueing them to each other and the base. Do the outer walls first, and space them half a cm off the base edge (remember the 1cm extra we did?)
After that, glue in the inner walls of the building. Remember, doors inside yes, windows inside no
The white glue will bond quickly with the fomboard, and it will be hardened enough to handle in an hour or so.

Keep the roof unglued! That way you can play inside too!

Take out spray paint. Also euro shop, colours black, green, red, blue, grey primer and white. Spray the entire building. Thin layers, as the paper might soak up too much paint and come loose. Any colour will work at this stage. Let dry.
Take grey primer spray can, and spray another layer, but uneven and at different distances. This provides you with instant stone/weathering look. Experiment with these for different schemes.
Let dry.

Print out posters, plaques, signs and whatnot. Stick them to the walls.

Freehand graffity. Have a history with graffity for ideas, like me, once upon a time, on trains and bridges...
Or, look them up on google

Anyways, thats how it works, without pics to show. I''ll be doing another building in the next few days, so pics will be made and shown later on.

Meanwhile, if there are questions, shoot!

Post by: Viktor von Domm

of course...white glue (PVA) as the foambard has paper/cardboard as a cover on each side...that way it can bond easily... i have to remember that...

Scarper, feel free to post any pics of what you make in here mate... would love to see wht others can do with this simple tutorial.
The green grass will definately NOT be on the table next time. Green Grass is for smoking, not for Necropocalypse.

And yeah... i got soundly trounced... in my defense, we used only basic rules and models... not my 'true' gang

the amount of new and overly cool minis... wow!

47 is really a cool conversion... what did you use? looks like you sanded the parts like the devil

the postapocaliptic gangers looks very good... the wynch conversion in particular... but my favorite... by far is the smiley hippy... and it s mostly because of those frail arms... that creates an awesome look!!! brilliant...

by the way... what took you so long to come back here? you are not supposed to update every time you stick your mug out ^^ you know? you can just mingle and banter too

anyways...welcome back^^

Madness of Maus... Still Alive! @ 2012/06/28 21:18:55

Post by: MauS

Ah yes, mingling and bantering... I\ll try to do more of that,..

47 is really fault of all you guys and your suit avatars... I decided i needed a suit. So i took a sharp knife, a catachan commander (on command sprue, the one with torso and legs in 1), and a lot of tissues (sharp knife remember)
I proceeded cutting everything i didn't need, as in all the detail. Then i elongated the trousers, sanded the shirt smooth, and gave him a tie. I cut the barrel of the militia pistoleer hand, added two pieces of spear shaft for barrels, and presto, a sawn-off. Bit of colour did the rest of the 47 look.

The smiley hippy is a zombie with wych arms, brownstuff trousers, and again, just the paintjob...

I think, in any post-apoc world, with our consumerism infrastructure gone, people would always revert to Cannibalism to survive, but how to model those second generation post-apocalyptic cannibals that are still shunned from pockets of society??

Hey man,

I appreciate the amount of work you've put into your pet project. I can relate: I'm big on converting army man models from the dollar store, as well, I enjoy making GS models, too.

So, speaking of the work you've done, I thought the pinecone tree was quite clever. That particular breed of tree is quite common in my area, I see the cone a lot, yet I'd have never thought to turn it into the base of a jungle tree. That's quite ingenious. My one bit of criticism regarding said-tree, however, is that unpainted it lacks a cohesive look, with the base and the plastic aquarium plant being quite different both in colour, texture, and look. If you gave the entire thing an undercoat first and then a quick paint job it would help blend the model together. Though, painting aquarium plants is kind of a drag... you need oil paints else the colours just crack off with handling.

The other thing I wanted to mention was in regards to your "green building." It's a monstrous thing, and that's super cool. There's nothing like a huge looming behemoth structure on the battlefield to remind your troops just how small and frail they are! While the building should be huge, and indeed, it is, bigger is not always better when it comes to the more subtle features, in this case, the ladder. As it is, the ladder (being cut from a light gauge cardboard, I'm assuming?) is disproportionate from the models. Its rungs are very large- too large for a model to cling to. As well, because of the nature of the material used to craft it, each rung, being wide, flat, and very sharp-edged geometric, has the appearance of being crafted from something akin to sword blades. That is, visually, the ladder does not look like something you'd want to cling to.
I used to make ladders this way, also. But I have for a while now been producing ladders from rounded bits of balsa wood of plastic pipes / tubes, etc. I would encourage you to look into new ways of making ladders; more to-scale and from materials that better represent the real life devices. While your current ladders do allude to what they are, taking extra time to produce more convincing extras will go a very long way to add more intense and realistic detail to the complete structure. Not everything needs to be made from cardboard!

EDIT: one little nit-picky thing: you gotta get a dark grey or similar urban coloured tabletop. The green grass clashes hard with the post-apoc / cyberpunk aesthetic of your units and buildings.

Finally, I'm really digging your individual unit models- namely, the punks and freaks. There's a ton of unique character in each model. I love the drunk guy, the clown, the croc handler and the afro soldier. They're hilarious but oddly well suited for the theme of the game. It's great being able to produce any model that you feel like for your own game and amusement, eh? Placed on the battlefield, I'll bet they add a ton of life to the table top.

@ Flu:
Thank you very much! Thats the kind of criticism i love and want to recieve. Good points all, and things I will be certainly looking in to.
The big green monstrosity is actually just something I fiddled together while watching some chick-flick with my girlfriend, and is by no means a good piece of work. Indeed, I myself would never climb such a ladder. Normally I'd use staples, matches or stuff like that, so as to make it more in scale. But at that time all i had was cardboard, and the idea of having a ladder is there. But a well point, and well taken.

The pine-cone palmtree is actually a piece of scenery for my 1/72 vietnam wargaming. As are the green tableboards. I have since painted the other sides of the boards black and brushed them gray, so the buildings will from now on look to be in a city, instead of the irish countryside. And as much as I agree that the plants should be painted, I'm not even remotely thinking of going over my entire collection of Vietnam scenery to do just that. Too much, too fiddly, and not worth it. They look suitably green for a southern vietnam jungle, and i'llk stick with that for now. But anything that will be built new, will be painted suitably. Because anything I build these days, is for my necropocalypse board. My nam board does still see extensive use, but there will be no more work done for that. 28/32 mm is my fetish these days.

Thanx again for your well put comments Flu, they are much appreciated! Keep them coming, thats the stuff that helps me improve. No more cardboard ladders hehehe

Sheesh Vik... a how-to...
Man, thats a tough cookie. I usually get my inspiration ad-hoc... The same with these two (camera-man and interviewer). There was this richard gere movie on yesterday, in which he plays a war correspondent in Serbia (the name eludes me, feel free to help)
At that moment I was fiddling with some bits, and yes... out came the sandingpaper, the knife and the bits box. 20 minutes later I had removed all detail from a marauder torso and militia legs, removed the tube from a catachan bazooka, and turned a radia and ammo box into a camera. Some more bits later i had also turned some dark eldar stuff and militia torso and marauder legs into the interviewer. But as far as how-to's go, I wish i could do that. Its just trial and error here tho.
So as for my tutorial: Be Gutsy! Do not fear screwing up... its bound to become something...

Post by: Viktor von Domm

actualy i can picture the cameraman now pretty good! i bet he looks very good... the catchan bazooka arm is a strike of genius!

and yep... one has to have the guts to do all that getting rid of the details...

and... i am the least person to help you with the gere movie... him and cage are my most ...non loved for a lack of a nicer word actors out there^^

look at the size of that...wait for it...cam^^

cool looking cam at that...specially that searchlight!!!

tho he looks atm a bit busty methinks

and the interviewer looks a bit as if he is trying to fence with his mike^^... the nono pointy finger is looking cool tho^^ also good use of the pouch as a taperecorder (?)

only nitpick on him would be the DE head... i am not atm feeling it... but that might change... maybe give him a nice hair do like this:

Madness of Maus... Still Alive! @ 2012/07/07 23:48:02

Post by: alabamaheretic

those look pretty snazzy their maus. i agree with vik not digging the de head right now maybe if you clipped the pointy ears it wouldnt be so bad or like vik said glob some hair on em and cover them pointy ears

Waaaah!!! Nooo, not a yellow hairdo like that! Nooooh.... He;ll be old and ted nugenty... He will be in khaki suit with flak vest for warzones, and a flashy yellow mike. He'll be fencing/shoving it up ganger faces at the most unwanted times, drawing attention, blowing cover, screwing up overwatches... hehehe... the mic will be connected to the pouch in the back yes

The Camcorder guy needs another few layers of greenstuff to bulk out his to-be hoody (open to colour/pattern suggestions). I'm in doubt if I add a power pack and cables...
I also wondered for a while if I needed a sound guy, but I guess two will be enough...

i think you should do some thing geeky for his hoody like put the symbol for PI (he is a kinda big fellow and he must like to eat) or something along them lines would be fun

definitly do a sound guy! if you have as you stated so much DE stuff there should be some nice pole holding arms... so you could do a cool looking sound guy holding that big mike on a stick with some big headphones...

well...as it is a raised terrain piece....i would like to see how it works together with other stuff... and what will you add to it? will there be pipes and such things... where will the "water" come from?.... and don´t get confused by my questions... i really like your work here!!!

Madness of Maus... Still Alive! @ 2012/08/15 20:53:22

Post by: MauS

Ah yes, gotcha...
I planned the water to come from a seperate sludgequaduct in probably 4 pieces, so I can use them as high walkways and connect them to this thing. Besides, I want to experiment with dripping water. The raised bit is something i need to figure out. I guess it'll be some ladders here and there. A model can just about hide behind the walls... So it blocks ground line of sight, unless you are a tank or so... Pipes and stuff are a good idea I need to figure out too.

Hey, Maus, how did you do the APC on page 7? The mainly-pink one, with dual Lascannons on top? I want to do some Cultists with a custom APC, and I want to use that (if you'll let me.)

Madness of Maus... Still Alive! @ 2012/08/16 09:39:07

@ Brotheralexos:
The APC is a 1/35 scale tamiya germen Sdk 222. I built up the chassis with card, and gave it some nice terrain wheels (could be hotwheels, could be legos, not sure)

If you need pics of different angles for the reproduction just let me know. And while you're here, comment on the rest of the stuff too

Sorry, I saw the APC and I just needed to konw. The models are great, I especially enjoyed the Disco Guy. That, and I'm tempted to do an army of Clerks and Accounting Agents based on Catachans because of you. That would be sweet. Instead of a Baneblade, they'd have an Office Building like in the beginning of Monty Python's The Meaning of Life (IIRC).

First of all, some paint on my cameraman. I just noticed the arm looks baaad!! Its not nearly as bad IRL, but still, i need to fix it.

Then we have a bounty hunter... with a servo-skull too

Then we have a cultist head-loony, aka the high priest of the cult of Nuts&bolts

And an assortment of abnormals/mutants/demi-humans/freaks

Thanx Rogue Wolves.
Yep, bounty hunter looks rather regular indeed. At least he looks rather Games-workshoppy. I admit it isn't my best try at ungrimming, but for a bounty hunter it don't matter much. Its actually one of my favorite models as there is so much scratch built stuff in him that one can hardly notice.

As for Elmo... well... You just gotta love elmo! I'm glad you actually recognized him

Nice find on the toy truck, I always look out for vehicles in the right scale and they are often tricky to find. It looks great.

By the way I can see you are into modern/quirky characters - check out Crooked Dice's range of heads and bits, they have plenty of stuff that would look right at home on your minis.

Hey Guys,

Back after a little hiatus, and i have a confession to make...
I abandoned all previous projects, and started a small shanty-town. This in part due to my new addiction, called fallout...
So yeah, thanx for that Vik and Dave...

Anyways, i'm more and more sliding away from necropocalypse, and toward fallout. Not that big a change i think, I just need to build a lot more shanties and garbage, rubble and junk. And i'll likely need some cola machines soon, so i'll likely pay Galorn's site a visit before long.
Heres 5 shanties so far, and I would appreciate any pointers, tips, critique etc...

They are all works in progress, and I plan to add tags to them of all members of the league. Aye, blatant theft of Dave's work of art. Let me know what ya all think people. And give it to me straight up. Gently healers usually leave stinking wounds remember...

hmmm... i like them... what is a bit turning me of atm is the amount of rust... a bit less would be better... suggestion: sponge on some other colors like green or blue to the corrugated iron walls... thus giving the peeled off effect a bit...

as for adding the league members tags... artistic theft is the greatest form of flattery...so i´ve heard

oh... a thought just crossed my mind... you only did box-shaped sheds... why not make a tent-like one? more triangular than angular...?

the tower in the middle looks interesting... like a stronghold version for the underhive^^

oh and the details like signs and graffity already look very cool!

does that by the way mean you will do some fallout-ish characters for that inspitation too? i bet you come up with some very cool dudes^^

oh and don´t thank me... i just wanted to share the pain a bit with addicting others to FO too

Ah yes... there will be fallout inspired minis for sure!! Specially some in feinforced leather, some with merc armour... etc...
And definately there will be raiders... and ghouls... and and...
I should stick to one thing at a time hehehe

The tower is like a stronghold yes, and as a high point in the necro-hyves...

Good point on the squareness... I usually make my bases rectangular or square, dunno why. It kinda forces me into square buildings too. I should remedy that...

I'll try some yucky green sponging on one too see if that fixes some of the rust issues. Not sure bout the blue...

Shanty town looks great! Excellent build and the rust looks excellent, really like the fading from one color into another. Looking forward to seeing more work along this line, it's genuinely inspiring.

Thank you Skalk! Coming from you i consider that a huge compliment for my work!

I tried Vik's suggestion for the sponged green or blue, but immediately scratched the idea. I didn't like the look one bit. It looked too new to me, and the plan for the necropocalypse shanty-town was nothing to do with new. Albeit a good suggestion, I tossed it aside.

I have however build three more shanties, so now its paint again. I must, for i have run out of Foamcard...

Haha! Awesome! Absolutely excellent, but the signage should be weathered a bit more. Shiny new signage on shanty buildings..

I agree steingass... but the boards are all so small i need smaller rivets... Must look up ways to make them smaller...

Edit: Good one on the signs... hadn't thought bout that one...

Those ...."buildings"... look really good, MauS! I would love to see a whole town in fallout-style!

Working on just that MrMerlin. The shanties combined with my generic concrete housing makes it look fallout-ish already... but i now need several (20+) bases of random generic rubble. Can't create a fallout look without lots of rubble...

Anyone have some good tutorials on doing rubble bases quickly??

Yes. Get your hands on a regular real brick (or 2) and a hammer. Put it in a paper bag and wrap the paper bag w/ a plastic garbage bag. Beat it up pretty well but don't go all psycho on it or you'll wind up w/ more dust than rubble. Glue to a base, spray black, drybrush gray, ruined city in just a couple hours!
