Ork - Scratch built and Converted models (and some Chaos) @ 2012/01/30 17:58:57

Post by: wazzoo2000

ive been asked to start a blog, i've never done anything like this before in my life.

i would love any tips on any part of my models, but please understand i have never played 40k, and i know im not a good painter.

this is one of many scratch built vehicles i have, every thing is made from plastic card apart from the tracks and wheels,

For Thor665 -there is a hole in the model where the fuel tank is and the back of the rockets are, thats where i put a bar to attach the wings, i use plastic tubes, but if i was going to do it again, then i would of used brass, place a large one in the hole, so that a smaller one can slide into it, make it a snug fit, this all so help with painting, you can still remove the wings, once painted, then glue in place.

also another tip, i love DeffKopptas as a model with loads of conversion aspect's, the model it self is well bad, so when i use one, i try to use all the bit that i take off it, as my bit box is not very big. when you come to make the rotor blades, trim off the ends, so it does look like it will lands and not F**k up the blades on landing, coz there are loads of models out there that look awful and a small touch like that makes all the difference.

This Looted wagon is one of my fav's, i love the Iraq Style Bar Armour, all made from plastic card, it touch some time making, but i think looks the bizz, the twin DakkaDakka's on top and ment to be Heavy, like the heavy bolter that comes with the model, this was made from scratch to. love it.

I'm a huge fan of making the deffcopta into a prop plane as I've toyed with trying to do a biplane before - any advice with how you did your build of it? What worked well, what didn't?

i wanted to make a tank, but had no wheels or tracks left and GW has stopped making them, so i went with a looted style vehicle and made it from a rhino, i thought it went well, there are some things i might chance next time i make this, we will have to see.

Wow. This is truly some of the most amazing, inspirational scratch built stuff I have ever seen. And that should mean a lot, because like any inspiration-hungry mek out there I have spent hours scouring the internetz for scratchbuilds...

I am definitely subbed for more. Your painting is fantastic too. And, I really like your homemade big shootas- would you consider selling some?

Now look at that! I browse the blog page, find an intersting title, go there...... and find these awesome conversions i have already seen in the gallery a few days before. Looking at the creators' profile page a few days ago, I discovered that he has not yet started a blog. I pm him and tell him to start one, but then i forget about it because im visiting denmark with my family.
Now i get bored, start dakka, and find this blog! what a coincidence!

Really awesome models here, im sure gonna copy some of these ideas!

Looking at my recent attempt at scartch building and painting though, I've come to the medical conclusion that your almost annoyingly modest!

Wow some flippin' amazing things in the blog. Honestly I don't think i've seen many conversion better done.

I'm always on the hunt for converting materials and the like. Could you let me know where you get your textured plasti-card from? Please

Ork - Scratch built and Converted models (and some Chaos) @ 2012/01/31 20:02:21

Post by: wazzoo2000

i get ALL my plastic card and plastic tubs from my local model train shop in York, but i've also got some from a Flying model shop in Leeds, i dont like buying it Online, as i like to see the stuff befor i buy it, like some of the card, the really thin stuff to the thick stuff, i like to see what i'm working with.

just google "model shops in ......................." (you Local town) and i bet you get about 4 or 5 you had no clue were there, then ring them and ask if they sell it, then bob's your uncle, your working with plastic card you wanted all along.

too Matphat - the GW ork truck is a very good kit, loads of stuff on it to use in conversion and scratch building, so i there for do not encourage anyone yo copy GW stuff, as they get very funny about it, yeh you can buy them on ebay, but for the price they sell them for its not worth it.

i got a casting and moulding kit on Monday, just to give it a try, lets put it this way, eBay no longer has my business when it come to wheels, but ill always get my Deffkopta's from there, rule of thumb is never pay more than £3.50 inc postage for them and ill never run out of wheels again.

Really good scratchbuilds, Do you generally have a plan before you start because it looks like you do a lot of pre-measuring and cutting of the plasticard before assembling the basic framework for your designs, Very rarely see so much precision in orky builds.

i never plan anything, i see some thing i build it, i like some thing i built it. its all in my head, i can sort of see the finished model in my head and then that's my goals, some times i base my models on real vehicles, so that makes it easy for me to make them, but other than that, its all in my head.

God, I am so impressed with people who are good with plasticard, especially people who are insanely good with plasticard.

On top of that, you're a fantastic painter. I don't know if I've ever come across someone who was both so fantastic at painting AND scratchbuilding at the same time.

You, sir, have reached 40k hobbying enlightenment, and should be justly envied for it.

thanks again,

here is what every Ork Army should had, when this first came out, i wait a life time before i got one, but i always new i would end up with one and converting it, its not finished again, i hate the base, so i will be changing that when i can be bothered. the big gun is scratch built.

YES! I thought the exact same thing.

Wazzoo, like others have said, amazing work here.

I did an early Looted Dreadknight, and found that the AoBR warboss fit so perfectly it was like they were meant to be... I was very amused and happy to see you used the same warboss, same configuration, along with the same "remote controller" idea! Overall, I think you ended up with a much more impressive final product.

I <3 your buggies most of all, though.

yeh, before painting, PVA glue on the area, dont go mad, GW sand, pinch and sprinkle on the area, let dry, paint over it with some PVA glue and let dry again, then undercoat, once you've done your 3 mud paints, dont forget to dev mud wash it.

Lots of awesome here! Some questions/thoughts:
1) How long have you been at this?
2) How long do these monsters take you to create? Paint?
3) What I would love to see in the future is in progress shots of the build.
4) A tutorial or just step by step in progress of some of those twin linked big shootas (well, and everything else, but gotta start somewhere) would be good too!

Keep it up!

1. i'm 39, and been modelling since i was 14, ive only been converting since 2004.
2. most stuff take 2 or 3 days to a week of 2 to make, painting takes about 3 days. ( thats all on and off and when i get chance)
3. my next model will be dont with progress shots, that should keep you all happy.
4. see top hahaha

Expanding on 2 -
2.1) Is that actual or elapsed time? Ie how many hours per day average?
2.2) Also, some perspective from your answer to 1 - how long was it taking you back in 2004? If it was slower, how long ago did you start modelling at your current rate?

Apologies for the 20 questions - curious minds need to know!

Looking forward to the tutorial and progress shots - I'm sure they will be very enlightening (appreciated *almost* went without saying )

1. i'm 39, and been modelling since i was 14, ive only been converting since 2004.
2. most stuff take 2 or 3 days to a week of 2 to make, painting takes about 3 days. ( thats all on and off and when i get chance)
3. my next model will be dont with progress shots, that should keep you all happy.
4. see top hahaha

Scratch built Heavy DakkDakka's

Ok the first this we do it chuck away GW glue and go to a good model shop and buy some liquid glue that you can brush on or it squirt from a needle.

next are your tools, that pic below is mine, i use metal rules too, a big and small one, all so a girls nail file, best thing ever and also some sand paper, fine is good.

the next things you'll need are plastic tubs, buy them online if you know the size or go to a good model shop and buy with your eye's, you need to buy 4 different sizes, they should all slide in to one another, you will see in this tut as we go on, make your on minds up, im not here to wipe your ass.

cut to size, remember your making gun barrels, so if your making small dakkadakka's then cut them small, how ever we are making the big mothers.

draw a line down the centre, the is just a guide for when we drill the holes, we start drilling in the centre on the line and work out.

i use my GW knife to make the holes bigger, i just stick it in and twist, it all so make them look a bit uneven and ork like.

put some glue on the inside tube, this wont need loads, then side them together, twist as you do so so the glue gets everywhere.

now we are going to cut some rings from the 4th side up plastic tube, this will help with the look of the gun barrel, you can use very fine plastic card and cut into strips and rap it round till you have the right side. i have done this in the past on bigger guns.

next we are going to make the bodys of the gun, this is make from just normal plastic card, the thicker you have will determine how many you need, as you can see, i only need 2 bits to start with

i'm starting now to cut up other bits of card to build up the look of the gun, i some times us GW DakkaDakka's and copy a small bit of what they do.

this part of the gun (below) is the empty case ejection hole, again build it up with plastic card, don't work if it looks all over the place, its Orky.

now stick the barrels to the body of the gun, to keep the gun looking straight, the nail file comes in handy and all so twist the barrel round, some times this helps, do this as your (NONE GW) glue drys

making the ammo boxes is easy, we can all make a box, if you can't, then dont read on, and go play with doll's.......OK !!!
you can see ive also made some bits to stick them to the gun and for the ammo to lay on.

i always save the ammo belts and gun sights from my ork models as you never know when you will need them, as a small bit of GW model will help are scratch built guns look the dogs bollocks, and they.

the ammo belts are a little rounded, so just squash the with your finger and remove the mould lines.

now im making bits that look like the ammo boxes are attached to the guns and that the ammo is sat in a cradle, this dont have to look great, as we is Orky Army.

you can see how i'm building it up, its not hard, just cut to size, have a play, then stick.......easy hahaha.

now we are using the smallest tube, not really a tube, more of a soiled small plastic rod, but it fits inside the inner gun barrel, that's the bit we cut into rings, this part of the gun is the recoil rod or Gas buffers, if you know out about guns, but anyway, it make the gun look like a gun.

just copy what ive done and stick it at the bottom of the gun.

now we add rivets, this is cut from a very very very small rounded rod, like the one above, but well smaller.

and now paint.

i hope you like, Orks for ever !!

how to make a scratch built hatch for you Orky Army.

First off get some 0.1mm plastic card, I've tried my best to make the hole thing out of the same sized card, so to keep it very simple, cut 3 1inch by 1inch squares out

Stick 2 of them together and dill holes in each corner, this needs to be bigger than the plastic rod you will be using later to make it look like big rivets in the holes. the stick the last bit of card to it.

Now with your GW knife, roughen up the sides like I'm doing, this will make it look like its been cut with a welding torch.

Cut up some more card, this is going to make the sides of the hatch, so up to you really how high up you want your hatch to sit.

Build up the sides like I'm doing.

Now make some re-enforcements just like I've done and stick them on, you may need to file them a little just like i had to.

do this on both sides, you can make the base bigger, and do this on all 4 sides, up to you.

Now file the side at an angle, this is where the hatch will sit, it also makes it easier to stick and stronger.

in the picture above there are some tubs and rods cut to size and ready to be stuck on like in the picture below, these are going to make the hinges.
i also filed down a little of the hinge to make a flat area to stick the hatch, just makes it stronger again.

make the hatch doors to size and stick it on, also make up so detail, ie I've put some card inside the hatch to make it look a bit more real.
the area's highlighted are area that again I've made look like they have been cut with a welding torch, just do this again with you modelling knife.
These bit will be stuck to the out side of the hatches.

Cut a small bit of Tub, the same stuff as before, this will make part of the hatch handles.

then cut some bits like i have and stick on like handles.

make some rivets now by cutting a fin peace of card (square) just bigger than a smallest plastic rods you have, you may need to us you modelling knife to pick these up at they should be very small.

are now paint.

hope you like, just file down the edges before you paint as this will help it not look so new.

Post by: wazzoo2000

this is my Ork War buggy / truck Tutorial, I've tried to keep it simple for all you big kids out there, you should be able to follow this no probs, if you can't you need a new hoby

the first pick is my tools as always, you need good glue too, NOT GW GLUE, there are some very good glues out there, i use Humbrol poly cement, it comes out of a needle point almost, it rocks

Next you will need a GW Deffkopta, buy them from eBay, don't pay more than £3.50p for them, thats postage too, this guys is where i get all my stuff from http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/the-bitz-store/?_trksid=p4340.l2559, make sure your Deffkopta is not built or stuck together, it makes life a whole lot easier.

you will need to cut the model up like ive shown with the red lines.

all the bits left put in your bit box, you never know when you need some crap for your basing.

next are the wheels, you can get these from eBay, more a GW model or mould your own, up to up, i'm not here to wipe your ass.
i made some discs, this is just to give me some support at the back of the wheels, this is made from normal plastic card

i then made the bars that the wheels go on, you wont really see this as it will be under the vehicel, and i normally cover it in mud anyway.

sit the Deffkopta on the bar to give you an idea what its going to look like, at this point you can still change things if it looks crap, so dont glue, anyway its not going there.

now we build up the front of the Deffkopta, mate it look abit like this, it dosn't have to look great as a Ork skull symbol will be stuck on it, ive put a big tube cut in half there to, this is there to give it more strength when i stick it to the wheel bar.

this picture shows what the wheel bars look like, i sit them on my table and moved them around till i like the size, then i make the bars marked with the red line, these are like girder's, i got them from a model train shop, you can buy big and small, as i said before, this is the underside, and wont be see, but do what i've done if only for the strength of the model.
the big red arrows are showing some supports that are there for mud guards that i was going to put in later, but i didn't.

now sticking time, stick the front down, well easy, the back is different, you will need to make up some sort of support like i have, stick the model down first, then build up around it and make sure it straight, then leave to dry, 2 hours or so, MAKE SURE IT STRAIGHT.

once dry, i then build up the strength of the model, putting more beams in, plus it looks good

and again here, dont go over board with them, too many may look silly.

this is a good time to fill in any hole that might be there from cutting up your Deffkopta, or like me, put some more armour plates on it.

now we are going to make the suspension, this is easy, dont panic, garden wire is your friend, go buy some, its kool, get some plastic tube or brass, drill a hole, stick it in the hole, twist, hay we made a spring, trim, bingo.

cut to size, mark a little support and stick.......well easy

do both sides

now we going to make it look like it can steer, again, this dosn't have to look great, i will probable cover this area in mud

follow what I'm doing, build it up with card and tubes

ok, the bits that are marked are struts that will support the mud guards.

now make your mud guards out of flat plastic card, just bend it to shape, take you time, get it right, don't forget to cut out holes for where the springs will sit next to, marked with red rings

bang on some armour plating, mark it look abit of a mess, this is where your off cuts come in handy (never chuck anything away)

make a skull symbol, draw it first then cut out, don't forget to make it a bit rough, if you struggle, copy a GW one or go to your bit box.

stick it on

make the back flat bed, dont stick it down yet tho, we are still building it up

these bits and supports as i wanted my one to be big big big

now stick it down, at this stage you should be thinging, do i stop, and make it a flatbed, or keep building it up, what ever look your going for keep at it or stop

i built up my sides

and put some armour plates on it

add the roll bars, easy to do, just build it up

bang some armour on it, make sure the ork can see out, it will look crap if he cant and you wont like the 10 year old telling you at a games one day.

making rivets, start with small square

stick them on, randomly and in places that look like a rivet should go

cut some suds

stick them on, also stick some on where you havn't put squares, its all orky

looking good

hope you like, i will paint and post at a later date.

I have improved at painting my infantry but I still am not great at getting the look I want for my battlewagons, and I saw all your vehicles and they are exactly what I dream mine might look like one day.

Do you have a brief tutorial or tips on how to get that sort of red and weathering done?

when i paint i start off with a black undercoat, i then paint a gunmetal/black 50/50 mix, i dry brush this on, it gives a nice dark metal look, this is a heavy layer, but always dry brush, then ill go for a bright silver, again, dry brushing it on.

next i paint my bloody red, i try to do it as if the orks them self's are doing, i do it with a small brush and i only paint in small area's and work out, i always leave the edges alone, so it looks like worn. add detail, then wash with Dev mud.

im wont do a Tut on Painting, there are far better painter out there than me, and there are loads of Tut showing you how to paint, just go on Youtube, there's 100's

Lovely =] you should magnetise it so you could attach 'the rest' of a lorry, brilliant mental images of thousands of orks, tipping dangerously on a reallly long open top lorry.

I second the idea of a painting tutorial.

You shouldn't sell yourself short. There might be many painting tutorial out there, but we want YOURS.

Nothing elaborate is needed.
Just grab an armour plate, slap another plate on it and paint it while taking step-by-step pictures...just like you do your wonderful building tuts.

Okay, this is all pure awesome. First, this is why I would love to do an Ork army, it lends itself to scratch build for everything, and you've captured it wonderfully. The first pic of this thread I was blown away, all your work is inspiring. The Airship is out of this world, and the big rig is just as cool. And right, your painting sucks...? I actually really liked the dirt and wear you put on the vehicles.

Sorry to say, but wheels area hard to come by, unless you mould your own, and if you do copy GW then don't say you are, they will hunt you down.

Not sure where to send you or what to say to you. (I made a mould)

amazing build on the HGV with trailer. However i think its needs a few upgrades to it. How about a large missile? theres plenty of ww2 v2 missile kits that would look great on that trailer?

keep up the great work!

nope sorry, but i think your wrong, i love this as it is, i did think of putting some heavier weapons on it, but my Ork have a normal look about them, i dont like these model on here that go way OTT, i love this the way it is hahahaha

I agree with you, Wazzoo.

Some really cool ideas sometimes gets destroyed by either make a vehicle waaay too big or adding enormous weapons/rockets.
I find it really sad when something like that is done, all in the name of "But it is Orky!!".

Yes, leave as is, don't go OTT looks great.

Although next time more pics of the WIP that way its easier to steal your ideas the frame work on the trailer is great and I cant see enough of it in the one WIP pic.

This makes it way to hard to steal and replicate the style …. DAM YOU !

No I really like the way the frame turned out on it, if you could do a how to on it I would be ever so grateful

So cool! dont usually comment but could not resist. Makes me want to build orks so bad... maybe just a small army wouldn't hurt. I'd love to see a gargant conversion. Maybe find some dinosaur toy and stickin' orky stuff onto it? But my vote so far is for the grot tanks/looted tanks and the bikers being the coolest. More grot stuff!

thats is very very very nice mate, 10/10, but its not scratch built, thats means you built it up for almost nothing, yours is a very very nice conversion, top marks mate.

ps.......love the rusty look, very nice painting

hey wazzoo, your airship looks fantastic! You are going to add afew armour plates, right? Apart form that I'd keep it as it is and paint it. The orks at the side hatches are a great touch!

edit:

oh and bushfire, thats also a very cool conversion you got there!

Well it's official. You're models (both conversions and painting) make me weep steaming tears of blood and failure. I will now burn every ork model I have ever assembled or painted, and quit life.

Gitsplitta wrote:Question... how do you intent to run it rules-wise?

well seeing as i don't play the game, i have no idea, but i make my ork models in the hope that GW will one day make a rule book for ork converters so that can chop and change things as i do with my models, i go for the look of a model rather than obeying rules to me my number one rule is "make it so it almost looks like it will sort of work" and number to is "make it look good in the process"

I think that depends on what you are considering on making and the overall look of said project, I have found 1/48 great for some stuff and 1/35 for others.

If you can at least give us a clue it might help

thanks guys for all your non Warhammer 40k kind words, baby Joey is doing mighty fine and will be building Ork models as soon as he can walk.

ok to add, i do do commission and i feel im quite cheap, i charge for all the matts use and at a rate of about £8 an hour.

so this (see the pic below)................................would cost £150 to £175 depending on what weapons you where asking for (thats Unpainted, just with a black undercoat on and postage not counted).

broken down on price....

Converting the Trukk
1. the Trukk model = £20
2. matts = £5
3. my time = £25
4. over sight = £5 (other matts and stuff)
toltal = £55
Scratch Building the Trailer
1. trukk model = £20
2. matts = £25
3. my time £40
4. over sight £10 (other matts and stuff)
total = £95

grand total of £150+, i feel this is right for a model that no one else will have, i will make it different from any others ive made in the past.

feel free to message me asking about any models and costing
