Develain's Project Log: Terrain Scratchbuild goodness @ 2012/02/27 18:51:52

Post by: Develain

Hey there Dakka.

Couple of years ago I started a similair thread featuring scratchbuilt tanks.
That project failed because my plasticcard skills werent good enough for my taste.

2 years later, plasticcard skills improved, I picked up the project. Got some inspiration from various people around the webs, especially WIP forum, great builds there.

Enough talk and on with the pictures.

This is a chimera based of the WW2 russian KV1 tank:

And next to these scratchbuilt tanks I wanted something else that involved a lot of conversion possibilities.
Seeing that there is only 1 faction for Ogryns (Cadians) I want to make Vostroyan themed ogryns of plastic ogres.

Started on the guns. I sticked with the original concept:

So thats it for now. I'm making more chimera's at he moment, including a moderate chimmy for the Ogryns.
After that its time for Leman Russes, Ragnarok Pattern!

Also Converted Veterans using several kits and bits.

Hope you like it so far. C&C welcome.

Develain.

You know, up until that last pic of tanks (2nd to last pic), I was thinking "Meh, scratch built tanks to save money" then BOOM, awesome tank that is unique, but still totally 40k. I'd love one of those for a command tank in a standard IG army.

Chimera with WW2 designs?

And what about your vostroyans. will you use standard GW or will you convert from other boxsets?

Develain's Project Log: Terrain Scratchbuild goodness @ 2012/02/27 19:50:39

Post by: Develain

Thanks!

@ Lone Cat: Yes its based of a KV1 tank, and yes the vostroyans will be converted from other box sets.

Thanks. I am not going to,
Going to make 2 more of the first one. Then it's on to the Leman Russes. 3 probably, maybe even 4 Depends on if I make a vendetta or not.

Got some Sentinels to try out the painting scheme I have planned for these as well.

Keep an eye out for this log next couple of months! Clones are Done, Valstroyans are in!

Great job on the Imperial vehicles. Check out http://www.zealot.com/ there are other sites as well that deal with paper-cardstock models also. Over at zealot, search for the warhammer 40k threads and look for armormans thread. There is an armory of all the imperial vehicles for you to choose from as well as tau, chaos and a few eldars. The majority of these and yours, can also be transferred over to styrene. Ay Zealot you have to wait a while before you can access the free download but at amormans thread, you can download instantly through depositfiles. Enjoy and hope to see some more of your stuff.

Moving on.

Chimera with Track guards:
As you can see there is a rider on it. It's a Valhallan one!

I am currently painting some Valhallans that I purchased from Ebay, in Vostroyan colors.
So I guess you can call em Valstroyans. When I finish some you will see them here.

Amazing tanks here, mate! Looking forward to seeing some paint! Standard Vosty colors?

Got some models of of Ebay:

Valhallan Officer, will be Lucas Bastogne in the game:

Commissar, with sunglasses: Deal with it.

Tank Commander for a Chimmy: This turret is for the last Chimera I am finishing currently (need more plasticstrip to finish the tracks).

Also have the Commissar tank commander. He will be riding a Leman Russ though, more on that later..

Haven't gotten an update yet for the painted Valstroyans.
Will finish some of those foot-troopers soon.

Cheers.

Jesus develain, these Kv1s are astounding. Truely if I could ever get a sratchbuild looking as good as that I would be incredibly happy.

This thread is going in the exact same direction as my guard, so I will be watching intently to get pointers!

(You could make T34s for sentinels....(not that it makes much sense...in fact, scratch that, but I still would like to see your take on a T34.))

p.s. this thread has been subscribed to, I almost missed it altogether!

p.s.s.s.s. By the way how did you make your tracks? I would be forever indebted to you if you could just describe it briefly or do a mini tutorial. The rest of this totally beyond me, but If I could just make the tracks I would be happy.

As promised earlier today:

W.I.P. pics of a Leman Russ:

Started detailing the back a little bit, FW inspirated:

Made a crate with some stowage in it. Saw that in an older chapter approved book with Armageddon Steel legion chimera's:

And how it looks on a chimera:

And the thrid Armoured Sentinel:

Thinking about what to do with the red/white surface..
Probably a black circle with a number in it. Also like the Armageddon Steel legion chimera's used to have.

Enjoy.

I need to learn something from this painting of yours. My vehicles are white. You basically take a light color here and slightly edge it to make it stand out. I'm not sure I'll have that option, but maybe I can find a slightly less white to repaint the large surface areas of my vehicles and emulate this.

Very well done. Gorgeous plasti-card work. Have to say I love the use of Valhallans as Vostroyans. Great fur-caps you've sculpted for them too. Much better looking that the actual Vostroyan mini's.

Very nice painting on the tanks. Trying to decide if they're sand, bone or something in between. Can I be cheeky and ask how you painted them?

Thanks everybody.

@ Von Domm: I think premade tracks are waaay more expensive than what im doing. I buy an L-beam for like 2,- euros. and the rod for 1.5,- Ofcourse the time it takes..

@Leadlegion: I haven't sculpted any fur for these models lol. I do have some pig iron winter militia helmets swapped with some original heads.

About the colour of the tanks. Pretty simple:
Dheneb Stone/Ceramite white 60/40, and shaded with Graveyard earth and something that looks like scorched brown.
Hope that helps

Hah! Yeah, like that's ever gonna happen. If GW would just drop the Catachans and revamped one of the metal ranges, like the Vostroyans or Steel legion. That would be something..
I guess plastic sisters are more likely to happen before that.

Hah! Yeah, like that's ever gonna happen. If GW would just drop the Catachans and revamped one of the metal ranges, like the Vostroyans or Steel legion. That would be something..
I guess plastic sisters are more likely to happen before that.

Totally agree but it would be a nice surprise I would buy plastic vostroyans and steal legions by the bucket load

You definitly wouldn't be the only one!

BAN wrote:omg, with plasticard skills like that do you ever even have to buy a tank? lol

Not for this army.

Some years ago me and a guy were joking about Lucas Bastonne, that someone should model and paint a box of cookies from a famous brand here in the Netherlands, called:
Bastogne!

And that the model should be carrying a mini version of it!

Well, since this army will include a Lucas Bastonne. He is getting it!

Needs the white letters, and a better picture once finished:

And some more w.i.p shenanigans:

Been messing around with a press-mould. Here's the result:

All the tanks will be getting stars with a different colour as you could see on the first 2 chimera's.
These are the rest waiting to get some colour: (they are just square cut plasticcard. Saves me alot of time painting white squares )

And lastly. Some test numbers for the transports:

Cheers!

Awesome stuff, nice work on the eyes btw. I was wondering when we'd all get to see some more infantry

What are you aiming for with your red? It looks ok to me, a bit bright and orange maybe but that looks to be your painting style,
maybe try an under tone wash of purple or brown on a test piece, just to dull it down and increase the contrast.

@Onemanoodles: No the red is fine and how I like it. I just cant get the red right onto the pictures

@Kestral: No washes here. Line painting is my style, and washes can't give me the result I want.

@Masterdoobie: No hyperbolic time chamber training for me. Couldn't get to the lookout in the first place..
Haven't done any tutorials. I learned all my stuff from other WIP forums + practice makes perfect, how lame that might sound

Bought a stowage kit from tamiya. I am going to stack the tanks with this alot! Will make pictures when I have some painted up and attached to them

For the Commissar tank I had the Executioner tank in mind, the one with the round plasma cannon from the Ryza pattern FW Leman Russ as I am not really fond of the current square looking one GW has at the moment. I started making the coil by wrapping 1 mm plastic rod around a tube I thinkened to size. Here is the result:

This will be placed in a wider tube so that it is embedded in the cannon.
More on that later.

When I read the rules for the Eradicator Leman Russ tank I knew I had to add this tank for this army. I always presume that this is the replacement for the FW Leman Russ Conquerer in some way.

Here is my attempt at recreating the FW conquerer cannon functioning as an Eradicator cannon in game:

Cheers!

Looks great. Fits the KV1 turret style nicely. The surface details on the cannon make it look like each section recoils into the previous one, which makes the gun look very dynamic.

It's mostly subtle washing with a soft-tone earth-shade, but started by painting the recesseses with a hard line of graveyard earth a little thicker than the highlights I use.
And whenever I think it's too clean I just smack some more shade on it by either watering down graveyard earth or the soft tone wash

Something about the ogryn's armor, I think its the modular thigh plates, makes me think he's an EOD tech.

How did you make the armor for the body? Is it just layers of greenstuff/puddy, any tips on making something like that? How to lay it on the model, etc.

Yes, it is layers of putty. I press it on the model about as thick as I want the armour to be, and then I cut it to size.

Here is some W.I.P. shots of the other 3 Ogryns:

P.s.

How do I change the title of this log? so that it shows in the forum list?

Hey thanks! The gun was built primarily with plasticcard and plastic tube. Brass rings, I forgot where I got them from but they are straight out of a bag nothing fancy converting here. And the aquila is from the Small brass aquila set from Forge World. Hope that helps!

And now.. Before I start painting the Ogryns.

The work on that Commissar Tank is great, the freehand is cool and the commissar on top is full of character. I can also imagine him using that storm bolter for mass executions... I bet no one fall back while he's around, he'd mow down the whole platoon, not just the sergeants!

Develain's Project Log: Terrain Scratchbuild goodness @ 2013/10/01 14:16:57

Post by: bebopdrums2424

Gorgeous. What a great choice with the sea green to compliment the palette. As far as the missile...youve somewhat painted yourself into a corner eh? Youve got so much great detail on the one side, and as far as balance is concerned, you dont want it too close to the busy areas on top, id imagine. (not to mention, realistically, itd probably kill the commissar upon ignition). Id say your best bet is just above the 91 (assuming that panel is flat and even with the chassis, and not at an angle, its hard to tell). I dunno sir, quite a dilemma....well lets see whatcha do?!

Very nice models! Particularly the ogryn, the mirrored pose is a nice touch in the scale shot! however it's those tank turrets which are the best, they add a really distinct identity to your tanks. My only criticism is that the plasma coil on the commissars tank could be a bit more glowy, maybe more intense highlights or a go at OSL?

Develain's Project Log: Terrain Scratchbuild goodness @ 2013/10/02 19:05:20

Mr Sighs wrote:

Yeah I have been thinking about adding an extra light layer to make the glow stand out a little more, when I painted it I thought it was good enough, but now that I see it on the pictures I'm having doubts too. More on that later!

Develain's Project Log: Terrain Scratchbuild goodness @ 2013/10/02 21:13:45

Post by: bebopdrums2424

Yeah Dev, great placement on the missle. You tackled it perfectly. As for the osl idea, ...im against it. i think it looks just great the way it is as your style is neat and very tidy. Adding osl i think would contradict the overall design of your palette. Thats just my two cents and clearly whatever you intend to do will look great.

Develain, I have to say that of all the painting styles on this forum, yours is one of if not the best. I love the sort of clean, but still a little 'smudgy' in the recesses look. Across all your blogs, the star wars IG, vostroyans, SMs, it's all consistantly fantastic. Keep it up mate.

@ Mars: Rivits: 1mm plastic rod, cut slivers of of it, glue them in place, file them flat if they aren't and then you can also check if they are glued properly.
That's all to it, hope that explains it a bit

Actually it is not NMM. I try to make it look like a rich yellow hinting that it's gold but it's not. :p
Don't ask me why, I just like it that way.

But I can break it down how I do it:

Over a black undercoat it's Tausept Ochre as a base.
Then about 50/50 Tausept/Averland Sunset.
If there are details on the yellow flat surfaces, paint the recesses with scorched brown, followed by a light soft tone wash.
To finish it off by highlighting with pure golden yellow.

Then you'll get something like this:

This is the Banner bearer almost finsihed. Working on the banner still. More pictures tomorrow. As well as the Ogryn Bone 'ead.

Keep an eye out! This army is reaching completion.. Grand Tournament is at the end of the month!

OH that? lol I was thinking.

Uhm yeah it's practically the same, maybe I used the wash a little more and a lighter highlight because it was too detailed to keep it flat looking . Just depends on the area I'm painting on

Very unique style. Doing without most of the techniques that are generally deemed desirable these days (no zenithal lighting, not much weathering etc.), but still maybe because of that achieving an incredibly picturesque and pretty look.

It's a blank one made from grey stuff (Almost exactly like green stuff), and freehandend everything.
If you look closely you can see some ruffness along the edges, that;s from cutting it to size.

Hahaha, easy guys!

Praetorians.... hmmm. They are red too.. I never paint 2 armies in a row with the same main colour..

Catachans.. hmmm. I wouldn't wanna compete with Bepops army, He already did such a good job, I could'nt even try to do that better. No wannabee catachans for me!

Steel legion eh? I do know a guy who has 50 of them unpainted in a case.. who knows..

No, but in all seriouness, a second IG army is not very likely to happen (at least not very soon).

I think I might look into making molds and such, you know really start making master models and such so that I don't have to build every tank by hand!
Commission work perhaps, pick up my eldar. Or start working on some Space marines. Choices choices!

But first things first! Finishing this Vostroyan army!

Tank Banner:

This banner is based off of this image that you might know:

Have to add the wreath though.

Funny thing is, this never was an official Communist flag for the soviet union. A friend of mine made this for an imaginary science fiction faction. (Urustavia or something like that)
He noticed that this flag design was around the web alot, even the first google search hit when you look for ''russian communist flag''
You can even see a little flaw in it. If you look close you can see that the laurel wreath is cut out with photoshop so you can still see the ruff edges.

Believe it or not.

with the laurel i think it will look better...atm it is not speaking too hard vostroya to me...

maybe some golden trimmings on the edges too?

Nice Valhallastroyans. The subtle conversions and amazing paintscheme looks great! Any chance of a group shot of the squads at some point?

i like the laurel... but i still think the edges need something to be added... maybe some weathering at least?

Looking sweet as candy dev. I see you got bitten by vik too !! Since you dont post many wip pics regarding your minis, id like to ask...are you painting over or white, black or zenithal prime? And also your reds are always so vibrant...i achieve a "similar" look by painting literally 20 to 30 coats of red. Im thinking your way is probably better? Anyways, fantastic progress. On a side note, love love love the fuscia plasma glow. great choice in spot color sir....keep the candy coming!

Hey BB (I can call you that, right?)

About the red. It is painted over a black undercoat. I have a red painting pot mixed with 50/50 Scab red/Blood red, with which I base all my reds with, and from there on it's mixed with a little more blazing orange every step.

20-30 layers eh? For the banner I used probably 5-6 layers and then a light glaze with blood red to blend in the transition a bit. I think the ''trick'' here is to get that almost perfect water/paint ratio when adding the layers. I think someone called it as thick as skinned milk

Glad you like the plasma glow. maybe one day I might try OSL like you did on the priest plasma

@ Viktor: I am going to keep the banner like this. Want to focus on the print as much as I can, think weathering would not look bad at all, but it would distract a little too much IMHO.

About the candy.. The Grand Tournament is next weekend and the tank banner was actually the last thing I had to finish for this army..

So...

The army is finished!

That doesn't mean that no more pictures will be posted though. I have been updating some units, improvements and such. Will post about that in preparation of the Tournament + a complete army Pic.
That will probably be at the GT itself when there are better camera's and lighting. Might also do a little coverage of the Tournament itself with pictures from battles that I play and other armies that I stumble upon and are worth sharing with you.

So all in all keep an eye out for the conclusion of this thread!

Ok 20-30 may be an overstatement lol but I think a key difference here is your adding increased amounts of orange. I'm gonna try it out
Congrats on a fantastic gorgeous army!! Good luck!

So yeah, the light tent doesn't work well with the reds I'm using at all! + my phone camera doesn't fare well with group shots.

Busted out my digital camera!

Bastonne's squad:

Other Red shirt squad:

And then the batteries died.. So no squad pic of the Carapace armour squad.. Yet!

Enjoy!

Awesome, the infantry are just as epic as the tanks. I also love the idea of banners in each squad. Do you use them to represent Vox casters or the like, or are they just decorative?

The Grand Tournament was last weekend. Had an absolute blast!

I'm looking through my pictures I took. A lot are shaky, and I'm selecting the best of em.
Hopefully I can get some better pictures from people who took better pictures of the event and also from the Nominated armies.

Here is a teaser picture:

@MazzHammer: The banners are made from Grey stuff, very similair to green stuff.

Lol @ the dice. I usually don't bother buying matching dice for my armies, would have ended up with a gazillion dice by now, haha.

Here are some more pictures from last weekend's Grand Tournament:

The guys @ work:

Random army shots:

''The Cheese'' And yes, those are decepticon icons

The Hotel bathroom: ''supperior'' class

The Nominees:

Eldar from a french guy:

Tau/Eldar from the only woman in the tournament:

Pre-Heresy World Eaters:

And me very own Imperial Guard:

Pretty stiff competition..

But I got the most votes and prolonged my Best Army on Show title!

Well that's all folks regarding Vostroya! Had a blast making this, and sharing it with you guys!

But I will return with other stuff!
