Welcome to my plog featuring my custom Guard army called the EDF... heres some fluff..
The largest terraforming ship to ever leave the shipyards of mars was the Eden, the ship housed several regiments of newly formed imperial guard, ground and air vehicles, building materials and many families to be a strong workforce once the terraforming process was sucsessful.
the ships aim was to find a suitable planet to terraform and become a new earth and a new location for the imperiums efforts to push into deep space.
The Eden ran into trouble though, during the long flight the ship entered the warp and this lead it to be lost, when the ship finally exited the warp they were greeted by a series of class 6 planets that could take up to 10000 years to terraform.
during the terraforming process cabin fever became common and many generations of humans never saw outside of thier ship sectors...this lead to several wars on board the eden and factional warfare and gangs became common, until one man stood up and helped form a peace treaty to reform the crew... with the ideals of 20th century democracy he formed a strong leadership and crew morale until the ships doors finally opened to the new world ... EDEN
The edf belive the imperium have abandoned them and now fight for the defence of their home planet, in truth the journey through the warp did many unexpected things.
not only did it take them far from the influence of the imperium, but also took them onto a new dimension that tecniqually if acsessed though wormholes sits somewhere near the eastern fringe close to Tau space.
Eden is a peaceful world, and sends small envoys to find new citizens throughout the stars... Eden is home to many different species.
well enough of that... kinda hate writing fluff, it always get all cheesy ... basicly i wanted an army with all kinds of races, like an overly clever ork that didnt fit in etc... purly bacause painting and modelling humans all the time bores me a little and i like the challange of converting different species now and again...
ok so heres what i got so far....
EDF command
EDF heroes (count as commisars)
Charachter stand ins
Marbo
this is my harker mini... to fit in with the 20th century military style i decided that his weapon must look more like a 50cal m2 rather that the heavy bolter... so.. imagine that the weapon smiths stripped a Hvy bolter down to the componants and put it together in the lightest most practical way for a human to carry... not that this harker stand in wouldnt have the strenght... he stands a full 5mm higher than any other trooper, hes a beast of a man...
Harker
Pskyer
master of ordanance
Troops
showing different conversions
havent got many squads made up yet, but i plan on having a few interacial xenos squads... heres a beastman prototype
heavy weapon team
Elites
ratlings
ratling squad 2
Ogryn unit WIP
working on a rough rider guard biker squad at the momnent, heres a prototype test
all my vehicles have magnet technology to interchange weapon loadouts
transports all WIP
all of my vehicles now have custom track armour like this
vendetta
Hellhound/banewolf etc
Leman russ
Destroyer Tank hunter
Fast attack
Tauros stand in WIP
and one for scale
Sentinals
Manticore (scratchbuild)
Basilisk WIP

im not a 40k player yet... i used to be back in 2nd edition , but i dont know the rules, the reason i say this is because im not painting to play, im treating each and every mini as a unique work of art... i may well change my styles when i actually have to complete squads in a timely fashion when i decide to learn the rules... but im really treating the EDF as a showcase army.
kenshin620 wrote:Haha! Now this is a cool army. Love the "Psycho Mantis" Psyker.
The Launcher is also very awesome
The psyker model was the first model i brought when i got back into the hobbie... i was planning on making a Nazi styled chaos renagade army, but considering my other half is german, this was proberbly in bad taste if i were to ever show her mum what ive been working on... either way i based it on psycho mantis... might add more MGS styled minis when i get around to it.
SelvaggioSaky wrote:Great idea and even greater execution

only after putting the vehicles together did i realise how dated they look... i wanted to give the tanks modern styled upgrades so i came up with the smooth track armour... i might make a quick tutorial on how to do it if theres any intrest.
thanks for all the great feedback, im pleased that you have taken the time to veiw them and comment... if you ever have any questions on methods and techniques il be happy to reply and help out.
if you can thik of anything else that could improve the look of my army il be happy to take any advice onboard and perhaps use it.
The EDF is split into two distinct military detachments.
the Lightsiders and the Darksiders
The lightsiders are the main element in the EDF, they comprise of all ground troops , light transports, light and heavy tanks, artillery units and fast attack ground vehicles... the main responisbility of the Lightsiders is to hit the enemy head on.
the lightsiders wear 20th century ACU pattern fatigues with desert tan assault gear.
The Darksiders are the EDF's specal forces and comprise mainly of Air attack, air support and marinetime assault... The darksiders main roles are recconisance, air assault , special operations and black ops.
The darksiders have no set uniform, the units choosing what suits them best when they need it. The darksiders all comprise of veteren troops, and with this status ...recive the best gear the EDF has at its disposal.. many Darksiders are issued with NVG and newer more powerful autoguns and lasguns.
My work on the Lightsiders in nearing completion, i have several chimeras to paint, stormlord, ogryn squad and biker squad to finish, another hellhound, 2 demolishers 2 heavy weapon mortar teams....and 3 sqauds of troops (yeeah maybe not finished then .. lol..)
i have made some protoypes of the darksiders already, and will be starting then very soon... heres some pics..
standard Darksider veteran wip
finished model
seargent
also every now and again i make something unique just to test if i can... im sure you have never seen troopers like these before...
EOD 'hurtlocker'
still not too happy about the basing on this so i may well change it soon... il put up new pics with the black background when i do.
EDF SEAL

Post by: MrMerlin
WOW man, those new specialized troops look awesome! I love the'hurtlocker'! Your greenstuff skills are really good!
I love it when other people also take some (or in your case much) extra time assembling the model so it has more detail and character..... many just throw the pieces together and it looks weird.....
Also, you said you took so much care of every model because you weren't playing yet.... well, I play AND take as much care of every model as l can! Dont do "meh" models just becaue you want them on the board quickly.... I did that with my first 30 boys, and I regret it very much!!
Keep up the great work!

When I first saw the thread, I thought it was all going to be an Imperial Guard force based off of Earth Defense Force, the videogame where it puts you in the shoes of a trooper fighting off B-Movie monsters... mainly super-giant insects.
Despite my initial disappointment, it was replaced by an entirely new bit of wonder at seeing your conversions. Your kit is top-notch, from the Psyker to the SEAL, it's all spot on. I particularly liked the different turret for the Chimera that makes it look more like a Striker.
Great work all around, and good luck in your future conversions.

Not gonna lie; your Harker is fantastic! I've been thinking about doing something similar myself for my Cadians--but seeing you pull it off gives me hope that it can in fact look quite good.
The Basilisk looks great; and it's such a simple change that radically alters the dynamic and makes it look a bit better.
Your Master of Ordinance isn't too far from what I'm doing; albeit I'm using a few Forge World components(a dataslate from the scanner operator from the Cadian HQ and the backpack from the Rapier Laser Destroyer Operator; alongside of a respirator helmet like the rest of my army).
This thread is going to be watched.

really appreciate that comment... and so far since sept 2011 ive used nearly 100 inches of GS... i found a seller on ebay that sells 36 inches for £8... much better that GW's prices... id be broke by now if i hadnt found the ebay seller.
Currently working on a HALO Jumper to add into my unique mini collection of realistic military troops... ive become re-inspired by the navy seals on 'act of valor'... good movie by the way... army porn at its best... il put up pics later tonight of my finished basilisk and a few of my other WIP's ....

just a quick update of what ive been working on for the last few nights.....
Basilisk is finally painted! ive had this sitting on my desk unpainted for a month now, so i decided now was the time to get it done.
im pretty happy with how it turned out... i dont usually weather my tanks as much as i did this one... i like the clean look of a freshly painted and well maintained tank, but i thought id make the main cannon look well used, by adding paint chips, carbon and some rust.
next up is a small project ive been working on since watching the opening sequence of 'act of valor' ... here is my rendition of a HALO Jumper ... i plan to paint this on the weekend and have him mounted to the rear door of my vendetta... ready to jump out.
used a valk door gunner body as a base, tank crew arms , pilot head.
planning on him wearing DCU with black parachute and combat gear... maybe a blue/gray visor
lastly im putting up a few better pictures of my main commander General Petraeus and his communications officer captain blake... wanted to do some better close ups as im not really happy with the size of the composite picture... this is part of an ongoing effort to upload better pictures while i find the time to do so..

Post by: sparkywtf
Okay, I love that tank. I may have to steal some of those ideas if I ever do an artillery company (which I am sure I will down the line).
The Halo jumper looks awesome too. Would make a really cool Marbo too. I may have to steal that idea for mine if I ever get around to it.
And the commander looks awesome too.

may i add a bit of crtizism to your otherwise splendid looking parachute trooper?... the whole mini looks highly detailed and i really like it... just his parachute backpack looks still to bare... here i think you should add an extra dose of detail like bands and maybe a zipper? something to break up the bigger space in the middle...
the basislik looks stunning... love the control mechanism... looks like an actual working piece

i totally agree with you... i need to add some more detailings to the chute... by adding more detail it will also bulk it up a bit which il be happy with too... also thinking off adding some PABS to his boots for the rough landings.... i shall have something better later to show you

Post by: ashotninja
ok so i modified the parachute somewhat by adding a zip and a couple of strap lines to it... im much more happy with it now.. except that after editing the photo... noticed i messed up the zip a little... but from normal veiwing distace it looks fine and should look ok when i paint it..
also working on a few other conversions atm...
heres the start of my creed stand in...
insted of him having 2 super hitec laser pistols, i chose to give him a couple of oversized hi caliber 1911's ... not too sure where to go on this model... i could go down the big flappy cape direction.. but im not a big flappy cape kinda guy... and with this guy being a general, hes unlikely to be carring much equipment...
any ideas? perhaps more pistol mag pouches and a helmet hanging off his belt... sword? i just dont know..
next is a little veteran unit ive started working on based on US special forces in afghanistan...
this unit will be made up of old catchans i have lying around, and converting them to have better equipment, chest rigs, pakols , dishdash , backpacks and of course the massive SF beards...
if any of you have any suggestions for this build please let me know... im even consideriong swapping their weapons for small m4's or even ak's
next... heres a couple of snipers i converted in september...
these may get a repaint... my painting style has changed and improved since i started and now im just not sure if im happy with them... i plan on making lots of converted snipers from cadian plastics and maxminis barretts anyway so i may just retire these guys compleatly.
ok lastly the big conversion... my WIP vulture made entirely from a valk kit with 5mm and 1 mm plasticard...
ok heres the details.. so its basically a valk without the cargo area... the two masts have been combined to create a single shaft on which the rear fins are attached...
the front has had a magnetised 180 degree heavy bolter turret mounted on the nose and the nose also has a moveable IR painter added.
because of the shape change , for the wings feet to touch the ground i have added 10mm worth of plasticard to the wings and now it sits really snug to the ground... the weapons will be mounted on the pylons attached to the main body..not the wings... im a few weeks off of ordering the punisher cannons for this. although all weapons will be magnetised so can enjoy all options and loadouts.
c's and c's are always welcome... thanks for looking!

your counhts as creed... i really like that gunslinger attitude! i wouldn´t add a helmet... instead eiter a rolled up berret in his side pouch of his trousers or a cap hanging just from his belt...
the vets remind me a lot of dwarves...lol...but i like their look!
and that new version of the parachute backpack! yes...that´s good looking stuff!
besides...that valk is stunning... very clean looking plasticcard work !

For Creed, might I suggest a cloak (Or a trech coat over his shoulder) and some extra armor since he's wearing carapace. Great work on all of this by the way!

Post by: Chemical Cutthroat
Perhaps a communicator or radio strapped somwhere, like on his chest or back.
Or some sort of map or command device strapped to one of his legs like a pilot would have?
Just something to add to the 'command' feel.

Try give him a good old fashioned "Rambo" knife and maybe a couple of shoulder straps with the grades.

That Vulture is bad-ass! I might have to steal the single-tail idea from you when I get to my Vendettas (that won't be transporting dudes).
I also like the Basilisk and that modular Chimera is almost exactly like a project I'm attempting - the only difference being that I'm using a complete scratchbuilt chassis instead of the base Chimera.
Looks great so far, and I anxiously await further updates!

Post by: ashotninja
much thanks for all the input everyone... so heres what i got... i think the sculpting is finished on this... i dont want to over do it...
anyway...
so hes got..
beret with cap badge
harness with quad pistol mag pouches
groin protector
modular kneepads and elbow pads
two kydex pistol holsters
PRR in pouch mounted on belt with whip antenna
tactical wrist band ( map holder)
might add a knife once the majority of its painted.. there is a little space on his belt.
should go into paint tommorrow... im not fully sure how yet to base him... proberbly on a 50mm base on top of a rock.. to make him look important... or i may wait till i start on my kell stand in..
ok.. so for the rest of the night i think im gonna paint up another ogryn... i think i may tackle the female one...im sure she will get alot of people talking.

Baiyuan wrote:Awesome conversions, really like the style. Subbed.

you not the first person to say that and i take zero offence to it... this was the first vehicle i scratchbuilt, and lacks alot of the details of my newer tanks.... in my head when i designed it i was thinking ' big us army MLRS manticore with a missle rack that goes up and down'.. in actuallity it was a bitch to build and i got severely bored and just finished it without almost all the details i had planned for it... because it lacks detail it also got a crappy paintjob too to match... i really need to learn to make rivets as its instant detail... please someone link me a tool i can buy on ebay to make rivits...
i will be going back to the manticore and giving it an overhaul.
Banahir wrote:Weird how I havent seen this army until now

Oh and, /sub'd
i aint been on dakka dakka very long... week or 2 maybe... so im not suprised... i get bumped off the first page after a few hours lol...
fitting the guardsmen in the warthogs is pretty easy... firstly the drivers are from the sentinal kit, hence why i got only armoured sentinals lol... ive used the figures for the warthogs... anyway to make them fit, you need to shallow off their ass and back of legs, to take about 1.5mm off of its ass and then cut off 2/3rds of one of the guys feet to make him fit... once the drivers in place you cant see the cuts... il put up a pic or two tommorrow hopefully . the worst bit is making the gunner stand in the correct position... it was very awkward to make him stand and hold the gun at the same time.
TheLordOfSins wrote:Wow! Your creed is brutal! He looks far tougher then creed really is! lol
id like to think so... i havent named him yet but hes alot younger than creed and the EDF provide far supreior military training than cadia guardsmen receive... i reckon my guy could take creed no problem!

yeah... i find painting skin on standard sized troops much easier than very large area... getting a good even finish after the first wash i find the trickiest... and building the highlights i find very tedious...

thanks very much... im particualy happy with how the interior of the DTH barrel worked out, i wanted it to look like its charging up and ready to unleash hell on the enemy.. im gonna take better pics of it soon because the ones i took were a little grainy...
tonight im working on two more ogryns, the fem-ogryn and the ogryn i describe as an exploited trooper style... basically he wants to look like a normal EDF trooper and fit in with the other 'normal' troopers , so the units have made him his gear... and in compensation they get him to carry ammo and weapons around the battlefield for when they run out... trouble is the ogryn dont know hes being tricked... he will never be 'one' of them!

Just a very small update... been pretty busy this weekend doing conversions rather than painting but i got this done this evening.
heres the finished EDF HALO jumper (high-altitude-low-opening)
im really happy with the paint on this... took only 2 hours in all...
his feet are magnetised so at some point i will make it so he can be mounted on the rear door of a valk ready to jump out.
sadly thats all for tonight...
tommorrow evening i should have had two of my ogryns finished .... be prepared for giant fem-ogryn boobs

amazing work here, i love the specilized troops, im going to have to attempt to copy the NV and SEAL soldiers, but i have 2 questions, 1. page one, you have one of those catachan chainsword sergants with a GS tac vest, next time you do something similar, could you post a tutorial?? and 2, what models did you use for your ratling snipers?

The ratlings are the old school models that are OOP. Should be able to find some on the cheap on ebay at some point though. Never bought any myself but they don't look nearly as cool without the guila suits ha ha. His do them great justice!

Red Corsair wrote:Awesome work mate! loving every model in this thread! Could you tell me what parts you used to make your psycher btw, as I haven't come across a better vision for PBS as that model.
Sub'd
the psyker model is called 'dr klaus' from the projekt X range of minis... kinda alternate ww2 models in standard 28mm scale... most of the models from this range would be pretty cool for renagades armies..

its pretty tough for me to do tutorials onmodels i may only ever do one of, but i can definitly put up detailed photos of the sculpted minis before paint... most of the chestrigs and platecarriers are really easy to do, i just press the gs on it, cut it to the shape and then add detail from there... most i just sculpt with a scalpel.

yep... i never really liked the old models, not keen on the redcoat styled dress uniform they had and i really hate that ratlings run about barefoot...that annoys me... so as i decided to modernise the look of the EDF , i chose ghille suits.... very easy to make and to paint.
PapaPiggy wrote:This thread is subbed, This is awesome. Are you doing full squads or just single models, When it comes to the navy seals and the low alt. jumpers? I can't wait to see more from you.
the combat diver, EOD and HALO jumper are just some unique models i made just to test my skills, im not planning on them becoming part of a squad. The nightfighting troops are going to be made into squads and are part of the special forces side to the EDF named the 'darksiders' ... overall i should have 4 sqauds of light and 4 of dark.
i havent fully ruled out the idea of making a waterborne element to my army, and if i do then i will be making a full squad of combat divers...
thanks for all the comments from everyone else, im glad you lot like what im working on... im trying my hardest to make things no-one has done before.
just finishing the camo on my 2 other ogryns atm... and working on a sm scout landspeeder storm to be use to drop special weapons teams into the feils like littlebirds. ... i love those choppers.

Is it sad that the female ogryn looks like my sister? Either Way great job! I love the ogryn models, and yet you have turned them into the best looking models ever. Do you plan on using them? Or did you just do it for the fun of it?
The IG transports can go in water, (Can't spell the correct word for this mind you) So a team of combat divers would be so cool. Not to try and get you to do more of them... But if you where to, That would make this thread even better than it already is. Right now this thread is like 99.5% Badass, more combat divers would give you that extra push to get to the 99.7% Doesn't seem like much, But when you are at the top of the hill its hard to go up from there.
KEEP IT UP!!! great work can't wait to see more.

Great work on the Ogryns, the female one looks disgusting! (Wich is a good thing, since female Ogryns are supposed to be disgusting..... )
If I may add some constructive critism, maybe add some beard/stubble/mustarche or combination of such to the ogryns? That'd make them look much rougher and meaner!

Hi there! First, let me join everyone else and say this log is a real blast! I've just read through the entire thread and I must say you have some serious conversion/ GS/scratchbuilding skills! I've always liked the idea of making IG or SM with a modern, special forces feel and you certainly achieve that!

Do you wait until the GS as dryed a little before sculpting or do you work it while it's still quite malleable (spelling?). I'm asking this cause the shape of your bags and pouches are perfectly smooth and though I've been trying my hand with GS for a while, I never could get something so smooth.
Anyhow, keep up your good work and keep posting, this log is amazing. *hitting exalt and subscribe!"

TheLordOfSins wrote:I hope for more updates soon, I've been watching this thread like a hawk! It's nice to see someone accurately model ghillie suits with the padded fronts, instead of just covering the model in the camo. Nice work. The Kroot is pretty cool too, though I'd like to have seen him with camo paint or something else to blend him more with his sniper buddies. yup, although the guy crouching is the only guy with the pads fully sculpted the other have less detailed pads... i agree, its not just about the twine of the suits, ghille suits are only camoed from the rear, so its seen while prone...
and the crouching guy never quite got the hang of stealth... i imagine he wouldnt last long in a firefight lol... all my kroot are going to be different coloured skin... hes lucky hes got green skin... i thought of camo paint but i really cant pull off camo paint... same with tattoos too... i need practice, cao paint looks like im a rubbish painter when i try.
anyway... thanks for all the nice comments guys, i really am trying to produce something different from all the standard guard armies out there... and theres alot more to come.
ok heres all the stuff ive been working on recently
worked on my transports to get a finished prototype of how they willl all look...
pretty simple, but smooth and modern at the same time... im currently painting this up and converting my others.
HERE IT IS, The vulture!
its lacking insignia as of yet... mainly because i still haven found the right style of what markings i want in my army... when i do il repost detailed pics but heres the finished paintjob.
i wanted it to look dirty and used and much like the US marines super cobras in a grey plain paintjob... although a touch darker shade.
the forgeworld punisher cannons are sadly very permanant... i did want to make the pylon weapons detachable but the resin would not let me glue very well... the things were dripping with mold release and i tried to clean them up as good as i could, but the glue would not take, so they are perma pinned in place.
this is the beginning of the darksiders air attachment... i am currently working on a darksider plasma vet squad...with shotguns, kroot soldier and rhino grenadier... these guys will be finished sculpted by the weekend hopefully.

thanks, even though you cant really silence a shotgun .. they got suppressors on anyway to match their stealthy style of combat...
i was suprised too how well the kroot bodies fit to the cadian torso... it took a few misplaced cuts at first, but i reckon it lines up pretty well
Rogue Wolves wrote:woh woh woh, is that a rhino in the darksiders!?!?!?!? they looks so cool!
yep, in the far reaches of space there are still some un-recorded xenos unknown by the imperium... from a high gravity world the tribal people of Numbaia look very much like the rhinos that used to inhabit earth. Short and muscular they have adapted well on eden after their home planet was taken by a tyranid hivefleet.
the head itself was brought from hasslefree minitures... its a pretty nice sculpt.

i did finish my creed stand in... but i havent based him as of yet... this is because im thinking of putting creed and kell on the same base together... but i havent modelled kell yet... perhaps i should just stick creed on a temporary base so i can show you..
i have got plans to make a straken charachter... but i want him to be of xenos race ... dont know which yet... definotly a kroot this time, but im leaning towards a tau in EDF darksider uniform.
Rogue Wolves wrote:i like your creed standin because the chest rig you gave him is very solid snake like.. and i like that
yup, the chest rig was totally ripped off of solid snake... il admit it lol..
talking of solid snake... im thinking of making another marbo stand in... hehe..
UPDATE TIME... not much il admit but i have a reason...
a shelf with all my paints (126 of them) decided to fall off my wall onto my desk yesterday and destroy everything i had on my desk... this chimera had pretty bad damage and so did my manticore (which i re-modelling and painting atm) ..creed was saved by the bulk of the manticore, if it had hit him, he would most definitly been declared KIA.... very annoying... but i put in some work last night to recover the chimera as it was looking pretty worse for wear yesterday, i managed to fill a crack added a strenghener to the inside, re paint the damage and its as good as new... also took that snapped weapon and made the gun magnetised (something i should had done anyway) so now working on other weapons for different loadouts.
anyway.. here it is...
heres my finished 1st chimera (1 of 8)
its fully hand painted btw
as like always, it has no insignia, i will add once i figure out the best approace
hope you all like... shuld get the manticore re-finished tonight... and let me tell you... the manticore looks 1000 times better than it did before... ive got into rivitting in a big way..
also tnt delivered an old skool 1998 chimera to me unbuilt in its original box today... i wanted it mainly for the tank wheels for other (secret) projects but the main vehicle minus the tank wheels will become a griffon with automatic reloader... it should be awesome.

BIG fan of your work ashotninja. I love the thought that you have put into all your minis and army, very characterful!
All your work is great, but personally my favorites are the following:
- Staff Sergeant Knarll
- MSGT Suntan Jack
- Harker
- Vendetta with painted teeth on the side
One question, did you happen to use any of Chapterhouse weapon packs or are your weapons scratch built?
Keep up the good work, it's inspiring the hell out of me

yup, the weapons are the sentinal multilaser and the hk from a rhino/predateor... i prefer the sentinal weapons because of the hanging power cord... makes it look heavy... and the shroud on the SM HK is way better than an exposed missle with fins, never been a fan of that look..

ok, so ive been away for a while, mostly been working on a new project where myself and a few friends are re-designing necromunda to make it set on a frontier world and involving vehicles and stuff... we are mostly just making terrain atm, but i will put up a plog on this soon...
apart from that, ive been working on a vehicle to enter into a compertition on another forum... this is it..
EDF pattern 'Griffon' heavy automatic mortar
basically, i wanted an enclosed hull, where the mortar folds up inside, and when the doors are opened, it swings out, and extends to reveal the mortar...
making the door hinges was a real pain... but it works fantastically, and the doors close up perfectly... the mortar itself is a seperate unit that is magnetised to the inside of the hull, it has full movement inside and the inner barrel extends outwards... i think you can see how it works from the pictures...
hope you like!

i think i will put someone inside of there, just to change the mortar magasine... i made the mortar inside to look like it takes a 3 round mag, and i do want to put a crewman inside to swap mags... il get on to it !
thanks for all the great comments guys, ive been pretty busy with work recently so havent updated in quite a while... but i got a small update
. im working on a few different odds and ends atm...
first up... a salamander conversion
the conversion is based apon a 1/35 scale ww2 m-20 scout car by italieri models...
its a great kit, and not overly large, and imo perfect for a scout vehicle...
with the conversion, ive added kromlech wheels because they are larger and more rugged looking than the wheels that were on the m20..
its got an autocannon attached to the weapon mount and ive made a custom mag for the autocannon out of plasticard.
ive just undercoated this and i hope to get it painted up pretty soon... im planning on giving this a propper camoflauge paintjob, as i dont want it to look like the rest of the infantry vehicles i field ..
next up is an alternative to a heavy weapon team...
i got a pack of the M249's from max mini and i was suprised with just how massive the guns were... i converted a trooper holding one and decided that i would use the 249;s as heavy bolter stand ins, and because of thier size, they would be better being attached to vehicles.
i could field this idea as either a single unit with 2 wounds... or perhaps have a trooper controller as the second model for the heavy weapon team...

thanks Leadlegion, just listened to your podcast and im so happy that it made your discussion... and more importantly the way the fluff was explained... i find many players just see the 40k fluff and form a rigid idea of how it is and how it cant be affectted... but it was nice to hear my fluff explained by someone else ( who has a better vocabulary than me lol) to other people who may not have seen it... basically, you got it spot on, and that makes me super happy...
well ive bookmarked your podcast and il be listening in when i model my army in the future... just wanna say that im now a fan, and i like how in depth your discussions get... keep up the good work dude.

Might I suggest adding the same plasticard rivets thats on the gun sheild of the heavy weapons robot and adding that to the gunshield on your wheeled vehicale. Gives a nicer, more detailed look!
All still looks amazing though! ... Still waiting patiently on that Creed! If the model survived the great paint storm of 2012.

Honestly, great looking IGuard armies are the best armies the game has to offer. It's not easy to make them great though, since the plastic infantry models are pretty uninspired.
That's why I think most of my favorite Project Logs are IGuard or Cult/Renegade ones. It takes a lot of modeling and painting skill to pull them off. I mean, everybody (should) like Space Marines. They're a giant pile of awesome. But the Imperial Guard are the true soul of the Imperium. And if you can inflect some of that soul onto the tabletop, it's way more rewarding. I almost gave up my Battle Company project to focus on IGuard for a bit.

i gotta agree with you... i should love marines but they seem a little rigid with the scope that can be attained from converting them to what i want them to look like... where as the guard range is fairly boring unless they are converted ( imo)... that said... i generally dont have a massive love of the 40k universe and i want my models to to be slightly more realistic as a modernised fighting force... i understand it all, but would rather my army wasnt part of that.. at least i get an oppertunity with guard to convert models like soldiers i like the look of, and not be stuck with powered armour that really can only be different from another sm army by the colour.
Flinty wrote:Lovely work, especially the Salamander. Regarding the little heavy weapons carriage, I think you should do a guy with a control box as a wound marker.
i took your idea and i made him up... hope you like.
first up... another basic infantry squad nicknamed 'the sunshine crew'... they just love to train in the scorching hot eden sun and work on thier tans... sunglasses are a must for these guys!
next is a prototype for a darksider squad who will all be running / charging into battle... the legs are from kromlech...
next up is the nearly finished 'drone heavy weapon team' ...the controller is undercoated now and im starting to paint him
lastly is a teaser pic of my stormlord/shadowsword... none of this model is finished, but i got a little progress on it... note the reactive armour...

I really must use those Kromlech legs the way you create units and continue with the theme is so effective, the salamander is great and so looks the part, I have considered this model my self but you have pulled it of perfectly

yeah thats the m249's from maxmini used as my heavy bolter stand in's... hehe... now you said ipad i think im gonna make some troopers texting on thier iphones and on their ipads lol...
i dont fully hate on SM, i just think that you cant really do much with them to set them apart from any other chapter... in 40k fluff, they dont use camoflage , which i find is proberbly the most important way of making your troops look different from someone elses... chaos sm's are ok, just because you can go totally crazy and do whatever... that said, i am thinking of a space marine army next, but based on egyptian gods , puppetswar do lots of nice egyptian gods heads and it would be a cool theme for an army... or perhaps slannesh chaos army...

er... well... heres a quick list...
wheels x4 small chimera wheels from old kit... chimera tracks..
main chassis made from plasticard
lense at front is targetter from sm vehicle HK missile
single hatch door from chimera kit
battery from sentinal kit mounted to the rear of chassis
2, 5mmx2mm neo magnets
maxmini m249 machinegun
ig heavy weapon armour plate
hunter killer rail from chimera kit
thats all the parts... i will be making 2 more so i guess i could do a step by step in the future...
realised i finished the repaint on my scratchbuilt manticore so i thought id put it up and show you all...
basically, i added new side armour panels, panels on the launcher and rivetted the whole thing... after that my shelf fell on it and broke it a bit... thankfully its a solid lump of foamex so it didnt damage the overall structure... well after some minor repairs it got a suitable paintjob and camo netting. i still may work on this further, but for the time being, i think it fits in with my army a bit better
ok.. prepare to defecate ones britches.. or not..
anyway... got a prototype paint for one of the darksider troops..
the squad will be painted to look like US army rangers... heres my inspiration
so... here he is... just one for now... just a prototype i knocked up last night as a paint guide... as you may have noticed... he dont look like the original darksider prototype i made 6 months ago... ive based this models paint on a semi- modern US army rangers unit...
for clothing hes wearing the ACU patterned trousers, a pcu jacket without camoflage... olive green armour and pouches... tan helmet, brown gloves and tan boots.... most of the unit will be wearing this configuration of uniform, although some may be wearing different camo trousers and different coloured jackets... mix and match depending on thier personal styles...
comments welcome... i imagine this will anger some people as there is alot of different colours going on and will definitly not look very guardsman

Post by: lone dirty dog
Cool idea why have matching unformed troops, you don't in RL so why not in 40k.
I think this adds to the overall look, and brings in a new visual aspect to your army, I hope to see many varieties and combinations of uniforms.
It will be visually pleasing and interesting to see develop maybe some outfitting conversions as well clothing variations

thanks... well ive only played one game of 6th edition 40k since i started back in october... and i got my ass handed to me by a tourney ork player.... but it was just a learning game... im testing using them and learning my tactics and soon hopefully il be winning games with them...
got some more bits and peices to show you guys... been really busy painting recently...
first up... the basilisk crew... been meaning to get these guys finished for a while now...
they are the original metal basilisk crew but added helmets and interceptor vests to make them look more like lightsiders...
next up...
i wanted my orgrns to have thier own dedicated transport but i thought the standard chimera was a little too small to transport 6 orgrns in so i got myself an tamiya m113 (m901 hammerhead) kit to convert for thier personal transport...
here they are disembarking...
thats all for tonight... i will post up the ogryn transport wip as well as another finished chimera, demolisher and the heavy bolter drone operator...in the next few days... just finishing off the weathering on the tanks right now.
also one more thing... thought id show you a commission im working on of roberto guilliman for a freind from another forum...
its about 35% done so far...
hes going to have the powerfist with bolter combo on his left arm and pointing a sword with his right... im trying to capture him in motion and during battle... he is truescale plus some as hes the main chapter master, hes going to tower over the normal marines... should stand at 43mm when finished

well karma tells me not to post without pics so heres this weeks projects finished
first up... vet squad with 3 grenade launchers and a mortar... this is a stand off squad im going to use to harrass anyone that gets near my deployment
ODA TF 122 trains in the mountains beyond the northern desert that connects to the inhospitable deadlands at the nothern pole... they specialise in mountinous terrain and specialise in mortars...
i gave them beards and pakols (afhgan pudding hats) with the intention of looking like US special forces in afghanistan.. for those who have played the latest medal of honour , they are based on the guys in that... otherwise google the image 'special forces cowboy' and you will see what i mean.
next up... autocannon team... the loaders are magnetised to the base and can be removed for wound purposes...
the legs are the new kneeling legs from kromlech.
edit... just noticed i havent sculpted the hydration packs on the loaders.. balls.
next up... something ive been promising myself for a while... got both of them cheap off of ebay ... £10 for the hb , £13 for the lascannon one...
took me one evening to paint up... and im super happy with the results.
and the lascannon one... i wasnt aware that there was imperial guard and space marine varients... but heres a space marine style lascannon one.. i think i prefer the space marine style..
the camo nets are brass etch modern desert camo nets from 'accurate armour' a scottish resin company specialsing in 1/35 modern and ww2 vehicles... their stuff is top notch and very expensive...saw their stuff at a stand at the war and peace show in july... the camo nets cost £10 (you get 2 5cm x 11cm nets in one pack) ... when i brought these i also got 5 1/35 scale L119a1's (british dmr's)(£9) with acogs which il be putting on a sniper vet squad soon.

so true... beards are super manly... and they look like a bunch of rugged mountain men imo.
Baiyuan wrote:Great work as usual, especially on the turrets. Not to fond of the yummy hamburger-hats though...
yeah ... the pakols were kind of hit and miss, on a few of them i think i sculpted them right, on a few minis they just seemed a little large...
@ Bobulus - the camo nets are from a company called ' accurate armour' ... they specialise in 1/35 scale ww2 and modern vehicles... mostly transport stuff... they have a large range of diaorama parts... the nets cost £10 per pack of 2.
@ paxole - yup correct again... you certainly have a good eye and knowledge of bits
@ twitch - glad to know spock approves... its only logical he loves my models. hehe
@ egon ... thanks dude... i tried really hard to make the plastic ones fit in with the metal ones... the only reason i added 3 plastic ones is i failed hard at removing the lasguns from 3 of the metal figures to replace with the grenade launchers...
@ivory .. yup... wish him all the best... i too have had many friends who have undertaken multiple tours of 'stan ... thankfully they have all come back safe... as will your friend.
ok chaps... update time...
heres my hydra... based on the real life PANTSIR form the russian forces. sadly like a complete dumbass i forgot to take wip pics... so i will run down the things that i did to make this badboy after the pics.
firstly... i used an old chimera kit for this build... considering i had already raped the kit for some tank wheels i decided to redesign the track layout for a shorter varient... i cut the top of the outside panel and made a shelf over the track area, then made the sculpted panels and the stowage compartment... as well as the opened stowage bin...
i built the main crew compartment up from plasticard and added large compartment to the sides that i imagine would hold the ammo and coolant stuff.
the turret is made to look like the PANTSIR from battlefiled 3... using pics from the internet i tried to make it as close as i could in look, but simplified it for sake of actually building it.
the radar panel at the rear spins manually, the turret rotates, the autocannons elevate 120 degrees ... thats all i can think of on this for the moment... any questions about this please just ask away.

very cool hydra, I like the paint chiping, care to tell me the colors used
56423
Post by: ashotninja
thanks.. the colours i use are...
base coat of army painter desert yellow
wash with agrax earthshade (or devlan mud - so hard to find now)
several coats of gw desert yellow (i stoicked up on this when they introduced the new paints)
drybrush with screaming skull (bleached bone)
rusty bolts and streaks are seraphim sepia (wash)
paint chips are P3 formula 'gun corps brown' with screaming skull highlights.
ammo boxes, rucksacks and jerry cans are - base coat of castellan green , black wash , highlight drybrush with old camo green.
metals are boltgun metal / leadbelcher , washed with black wash ... highlighted with chainmail.
i use only MIG pigments for the carbon buildup and the sand buildup on the tracks and bodywork.

steal away! i really dont mind people imitating my stuff... maybe il get a pattern named after me like other guys
Flinty wrote:Your hydra is fantastic! I really like the additional stowage you've added.
the extra stowage was my favourite part of the build and quite accidental... i needed some of the tank wheels (its an old chim kit) and during my 'experiments cut the top of the sides quite badly forcing me to cut the tops off... then i decided to have a lower set of tracks with a flat stowage bin setup above it as well as the shaped fronts to fit with my other tanks.
well... anyway, back to business...
how long has it been? well... too long since my last update... things have been slowing down a bit recently because of work and the fact that i actually play with my army now...so less time for modelling that before...
first up...
on another forum i put some quick pics up of my airfix land rover wmik, well this morning i decided to finish weathering the thing and get some pics... still though, its missing the missle launcher guy on the back...
when i finish the guy il put up a seperate pic of him .. hes a catchan missle launcher dude with a head swap for a plastic cadian.
next up is one of my two armageddon opatterned medusas , but as they are heavely converted, im gonna call them EDF patterned SPG.
the other one is still in its basic form, and awaiting tlc... also just wanna add that this kit from forgeworld is possibly the worse fitting kit ive ever seen... i scolded myself with boiling hot water trying to get this kit to fit together, and the sheild needed cutting away to make the barrel poke out from the hull, otherwise it simply was too big to come out... both cost me £120 (with postage) from FW and i honestly reget it as i think i could have made a better scratchbuilt model myself.
next up are two WIP's
second salamander, this time with a turret rather than the open style i showed before.
this was a M8 greyhound scout car 1/35 scale by italeri.
next up is an odd thing that im turning into a crassus armoured transport style troop carrier..
i got a very cheap german army jaguar tank destroyer (1/35 scale) off ebay and it was a little larger than i thought originally... its odd shape made it easy to determine that it could easily be made to look like a kind of amphipious transport... i will be putting up home made rules for this thing once its finished.
i will be adding some autocannon mounts to the top of the cargohold so the troops can fire them from the large hatches at the top... or i might add the large optics that is meant to be mounted on the nose.
anyway... hope you enjoy... tommorrow i should be able to put up the pics of my banesword i used in the recent appoc game... as its finished!

Your German Jaguar tank destroyer conversion is FANTASTIC !!!! Great job on the panelling and after seeing this you should have scratch built your own EDF SPG
The salamnder stand Ins I love, I had thought of using these for Orks at one time but you have used them in a much better way indeed, the turret version looks great.

You always manage these nice little touches that add the 40K elements to the models oh-so-well. Swapping hatches and weapons, making sure they look 'stocky' enough. Making plasticard your bitch. All good things. I love watching your conversions, and it gives me hope I might be able to give it a shot if I'm feeling adventurous.

I have the 2 set of Airfix land rovers (bought on a wim) but was not sure how they would look now I don't need to worry Your German Jaguar tank destroyer conversion is FANTASTIC !!!! Great job on the panelling and after seeing this you should have scratch built your own EDF SPG The salamnder stand Ins I love, I had thought of using these for Orks at one time but you have used them in a much better way indeed, the turret version looks great. Awesome army amazing conversions and oozes character How did you do the rivets on the Jaguar conversion by the way
thanks very much... yeah althought the airfix landrovers are quite spindelly i buffed them out a little with the front panel and widened the axels a touch... it really didnt look 40k till i did that. the m10 scout cars would look great as ork vehicles, they are the peerfect size and to me, seem a good shape for that kind of conversion aswell. LeadLegion wrote:Absolutely gorgeous. I'm very glad you posted again. I was starting to wonder if you'd been suffering from gamer ADHD and moved on to other things. nah, im constantly busy, i say i spend about 4 of the 7 days a week solidly modelling, painting, ebaying and bitz sites browsing or just scratching my head figuring stuff out... the thing i dont make much time for is taking photos... its always dark when im home during the winter, so getting decent pics is awkward... plus my slr camera is quite broken... it still works, but the lens points downward from the veiwer... and pics seem a touch off on colour too.... anyway... got some stuff for you to check out... enjoy! Making plasticard your bitch. All good things. I love watching your conversions, and it gives me hope I might be able to give it a shot if I'm feeling adventurous. most of the conversions i do are very simple, and i really spend alot of time deciding on what parts to swap out for 40k parts when convertion RL vehicles... usually its just a matter of adding some armour panels to buff them out, or a hatch and weapon change ( tbh, thats a must) ... but the best way to do it is to sit down with a lenght of styrene rod and a scalpel, and cut thousands of tiny rivits... then mentally prepare yourself for the hell that is applying 300+ rivits to a single tank. ... gotta love it though! anyway guys... well heres some of the stuff ive been working on over the last few months... not alot to be honest, as i have lots of stuff half finished .... but heres todays things... amphibious assault transport (customised stats vehicle... think of an amphibious crassus with less weaponary) enjoyed painting this, was a nice change to paint green rather than the usual desert stuff... reason is that it would be better suited to be darker for blending into the water. not too sure if its obvious but the whole tank is covered with rain marks where the dust has dried to the running water when it has left the water... apart from that quite a fast paintjob on this... the final touch was airbrushing the dust to the bottom skirts and underside of the tank... really happy with how it turned out. next up is a thing i have been working on since the model came out... i brought the ork dakkajet the day it was released with the intention of turning it into a thunderbolt... well after much messing around, its now become a lightning. im very happy with how it turned out... painted the whole thing in 5 hours or so on christmas day... mostly airbrush work except the camo which was hand painted... all rust streaks and grime was done with washes. im happy with the paintjob, but im not really feeling the model itself as an EDF plane.... to me it just does not fit with the rest of my stuff... i am considering selling it depending on how good the voss patterned lightnings are. (EDIT - i now have a voss paterned lightning and i defo want rid of this flyer) lastly for tonight is my BANESWORD. this model took me ages to model and paint... i acually finished it in november for an 30k appoc game i had at the local club, which won me the best painted army/ vehicle award ... the model istef done great, knocking out a stomper, a squad of geanestealers, and about 50 charging orks. i have at the moment wip- special reconassance artillery spotting tank. (needs weathering) 3 chimeras (1 needs minor paint work ) 2 need modelling still armoured salamander (needs weathering) devildog (basecoated) atlas / trojan (basecoated) and plenty of troops still to be done... i am still working hard on my army... sadly i also need to make time for my 2.5k necron army and the necromunda/borderlands project im still very much busy on.

One of the things I like most about your work - as the banesword shows really well - is the amount of kit details (packs, storage, etc). It adds such realism - well, for the magic space future. Great job!

well i have made a modular tank to act as a atlas, trojan, IED and mineclearer and an ambulance based off the manticore chassis... i pictured the atlas on a previous page and ive only completed the atlas and the ambulance but for the trojan i guess i would just make a box with a large loading door and an mechanical arm to assist the troops unloading the ammo vehicle.... not too far off the fw version

Heres one!
ive been toying with new xenos ideas and got myself a few lizardmen to cut up... so heres one i made to add to whatever squad i might swap a flammenwaffen with.
anyway... got a few more pics ... firstly..
another basic infantry squad with a grenade launcher...
first up... my Devildog...
pretty simple really...
next up...
the finished armoured salamander ..
ok... now for something very different.
i read some interesting custom rules a while ago for a reconisance tank to help artillery scatter less during appocolyse games...
so heres the pics followed by the rules...
NOW TRANSFORM!
0-1 Mechanized Observer Squad
Points Front Side Rear BS HP
M. Observer 100 As vehicle 3 3
Squad: The squad consists of a 2 man Forward Observer team in an observation vehicle. The squad will never leave the vehicle and they are effectively treated as a tank for all purposes.
Weapons: As per underlying vehicle (if any).
Options: A mechanized observer team comprises either an armored car (See Recon Units) or a chimera troop transport. Regardless of which vehicle is chosen, the vehicle looses all transport capacity and turret weapons. The capacity is filled in with electronics while the turret becomes a massive spotting array on a telescoping lift. The crewman may still use the mounted lasguns if they are not targeting.
SPECIAL RULES
Ranging In: A mechanized observer team utilizes the more sophisticated seeking apparatus on their vehicle to range in. All rules not changed by the array special rules below operate the same as for a forward observer team.
Observation array: The massive observation array replacing the turret provides for options in ranging in. The team may either range in visually, which is the same as for an infantry observer team (and may be the only option if the array is destroyed), or may use the array. If using the array, the array has a visual range of 48” Because the array includes numerous types of identification apparatus, if using the array (whether telescoped or not), only 1D3 is rolled for scatter.
Telescoping Mount: The array may be raised on its telescoping mount to see over any terrain features that the mechanized observer is in base contact with or within (so the array may be able to see a target the underlying vehicle cannot). The user should declare at the end of the movement phase if he is raising the array, if he has not declared, it is presumed the array is lowered to protect it from fire. The array is vulnerable to being damaged when telescoped, even though the underlying vehicle may not be visible due to terrain. If the telescoping mount is raised, the array may be separately targeted by the enemy. Any enemy the array can see, can also see the array. If the array is hit, roll to penetrate on armor 10. Any penetrating or glancing hit destroys the array. If the array is destroyed, it may no longer be used for ranging in, however the crew may still range in visually as the underlying vehicle is not destroyed only the array. If an opposing player shoots at the vehicle either because they could target either target or when the array is not raised, roll normally for the vehicle. If a weapon destroyed result is rolled, the array counts as the only mounted weapon.
options - can add a 2 shot HK missle for +15 points
smoke launchers - free
Camo nets for +20 points
heavy stubber - 10 points
Extra armour - +15 points

id love too, but i almost cant fit it all now on my 6x4 board... and when i feel inspired to take pictures , its usually at night and the pictures turn out all crappy... when summer come around and its a particually sunny day, i get it all outside and take a full army shot.
update time
firstly my wip's...
improved look leman russ vanquisher with coaxel stubber.
next up...
remember my biker dude from ages ago? well his friends are made now!
next...
the first of three raper laser platforms.
lastly for Wip's...
this is something i havent really named yet... its a multi purpose transport platform that can act as 3 different vehicles depending on the magnetised loadout... the vehicle is roughly 300mm long and 73 mm wide...
this is still heavily wip...
drone control/ communications vehicle.
a mega trojan
the chassis for a tactical nuke deathstrike launcher.
this is still missing the actual missle and launch control platform... im still yet to find one big enough for the job.
now for the finished pictures...
first up... my voss patterned lightning.
NOT HAPPY WITH THESE PICS... I WILL BE RE-DOING THEM
next up...
an odd one... the start of my unusual psyker battle squad...ALIEN GREYS!
to be honest... my photos cannot do these models justice... they are ever so slightly mettallic and shimmer when veiwed... the flash seems to have killed the effect...
beware though... they enjoy a good anal probe now and again (who doesn't - lol)
lastly for finished stuff is my ragnarok seige MBT...
made from an tamiya 1/35 scale M41 ... its a good chunky size for a heavy tank (not superheavy though)
i literally couldnt be happier with the painting on this tank... its the best ive done so far... most of my older tanks will now be getting additional paintwork of worn look thats on this beast.
well thats it guys and gals... any questions just ask away... feel free to critisize or get on your knees and worship me... dont care, just comment and il answer any questions.

The Leeman Russ is a nice change but still keeping the look of the original design
Everything else looks great what was the base model for the scuds transporters the bike squad I love they look cool all in there posing stops them looking repetitive
The VOSS Is lovely I want one of these it is such an awesome looking craft
Love the aliens different but the M41 steals the show works really well for 40k and design and scaling, as always amazing work

the things i really dont like about the russ is the lenght compared to the height, it just seems too small to be a propper mbt, so adding the lenght to it just seemed right, like thats where the engine would be placed.. once i lengthened it then the turret seemed way too small for it so i added the stowage bins the the back, then the optics on the left side... all that coupled with with my track armour seemed to make a shape i like... all my russes are gonna look like this from now on.
the base model for the superheavy deathstrike ballistic missle platform was a 1/35 scale HEMITT us army 10 ton transporter.
like this...
on a side note... i just love the design of this truck, something about it just suits the guard look without much messing around.
the VOSS is great... fantastic model and lots of fun to build and paint... suprisingly large aswell for a small interceptor.
xXWeaponPrimeXx wrote:I love this army!!

im pretty sure i havent shown you guys the AC130 im working on (i say working on, havent done anything on it for months)
my favorite 40k weapon... the punisher cannon.
earthshaker cannon
this is where i got all the spare parts for my thunderbolt and vultures... the AC130 is made from 3 valk hulls, joined and widened ... the rest is pretty much made from foamalux sheets.
but thats as far as i gotten for now, once i finished of my entry to the bad ass round comp il get this finished and out of the way.... well after i find a 24'' 20mm thick acrylic rod for the base, that wont cost the earth.

Post by: Spartan-Kun
Nah, a real Spooky gunship has a 105 (or a 155, I forget) and every time it fires it, the planes moves sideways a few feet.
56423
Post by: ashotninja
the AC130 IRL has the howitser 155 , an bushmaster autocannon and a minigun... in 40k terms im gonna put a earthshaker cannon , a punisher cannon and im thinking of a twin linked autocannon ...
that with chaff launchers as defenses...
maybe have the armour values as
F12 S 13 R 12 with 5 HP ...
the plan is to mount it on a 2 foot acrylic rod at a 45 degree angle so the guns face to the ground , it will be primarily an anti troop weapons platform...
i might even mount it higher depending on its weight and base size ...so small arms fire cant hit it.
id like it to have some special rules too... one i thought of was
Sipping on air .
due to the fuel requirments of the gunship it can only maintain a limited flight time, after turn 3 , roll a D6 and if the dice roll is the same or above the turn it stays in the fight, if it is under the turn number it heads back to base to refuel... effectivly this removes the aircraft from the game.
im making this for apocalypse events that im gonna have, and i like making new things...
if any of you can think of other rules or write me a cool datasheet ( impartial of course) with points and special rules that would be awesome... also id nlike to point out that the weapons inside are magnestised so they can be swapped out for a different loadout, so points values for weapon swaps would be cool too...
im thinking of a lascannon loadout and mesusa cannon aswell... something like that...

hey guys, thanks for the great comments, ...
as far as updates go... well im just posting up the darksiders command section i entered into ruglad and comradepadas most recent 'badass' comp...
and sadly thats all...
and for once i have a good reason.
about a year ago i dropped my sony dslr and the mirror inside pointed in a slightly different direction, throwing off the auto focus and making the picture lower than the actual picture being taken...
well my camera decided to commit suicide again and i fear its had it for good... i really should take better care of my stuff... id take a photo of it but...
anyway, ive decided to buy myself a new nikon d3200 for xmas, and ive promised myself to take better care of it and to not store it places where it might fall off.
so you guys aint getting no pictures till after xmas when im back from germany...
so for the next 2 months im gonna make my fluff and maybe write myself a codex to accompany my force ... im thinking of an amalgamation of guard codex and with some fluffy additions like the k9 units and drones etc... regarless its gonna give me something to do while im away and gives me something to post aswell...
but until then im still working on my force... i have just finished 2 more chimeras (one with hf and the other with autocannon) , the darksiders rangers vet squad are also finished . ,and working on a malcador stand in, a minotor stand in, the bikers are nearly finished, the other medusa is built awaiting paint and other odds and ends...

Post by: xXWeaponPrimeXx
Ooh! Can I write some short fluff for your codex?
56423
Post by: ashotninja
sure... let me just get the rough main story thought of and id love to get some decent input on fleshing it out ...
been reading the forgeworld horus heresy book 1 at the moment and i really think the story would suit the time just before the age of strife...
for instance, Eden the ship would have left the mars dockyard looking to find a new location to set up a 'new' earth, not long after the ship left the warpstorms cut off eden (ship) from the imperium and thats when they got lost in the warp and ended up in the far depths of the eastern fringe.... hidden from imperial veiw.... cue the age of strife....
id also like to add that the eden ship is techniqually a massive factory and terraformer ship, with a still intact and fully funcioning stc and stc factory... this is how the EDF have acsess to build all imperial type vehicles and many thought lost by the mechanicum...
ownng the last fully functioning stc makes the EDF the prime target for imperial and mainly the mechanicum to find them... althought they know of the existance of Eden, its location is still unknown.... the only race that know of the EDF are the tau.... and the alliance between the tau and the imperum are growing stronger , its only a matter of time before the imperium are told of Edens location.
tau vs eden wars.
the tau as a fledgling empire first found Eden and attempted to overpower the planet, the tau were still new at fighting and struggled to take the planet... dispite the taus doctrines they saw the people of eden as deserving their respect to live on independant of even the tau way of life and chose to insted use the EDF to help train and guide the tau on how to effectivly defeat human imperial forces... the tau use eden for trade and have a small base on the northern glacier, for this the tau errected massive camo , shielding and ecm feilds to effectively hide the planet and its inhabitants from imperial view. (something like that)
bullet points
# ship left mars circa m25 perhaps?
# largest ship ever constructed with mission to create a new earth.
#Eden (planet) uses 21st centry styled government and democratic protocols, EDF use similar era fighting methods.
# the eden crash landed on the planet and it took 12000 years to cultivate/ terraform.
# eden has an incrediblly powerful psyker called the envoy that targets potential candidates for eden citizenship and directs then how to get to eden via a pickup service (or something like that)
# the main capitol of eden is built around the crashed ship , housed inside a giant tau built energy dome that protects the city.
# eden the planet has two suns that rotate together around half of the planet, one half of the planet is constantly in direct sunlight forming an instense desert envioment and the other side is perpetulally in darkness, forming a massive ocean and mountanous area with a freezing glacier in the center.. the 1000 mile band that join the two halfs are lushoius jugles and fertile fields.
the EDF forces names are based on the two halfs of the planet (lightsider and darksider) denoting their military training grounds and specialisations.
im gonna do a peice about edens laws and governmental system, regarding the use and discovery of latent psykers... races within eden society, the make up and tactical uses of the EDF, the implentation of the EDf against the oncoming threat of the imperium. etc.
thats all i got for the moment... i feel like ive been creating this for a few years in my head now and i want to get some proper write up on the go... as my force deserves a boost in morale... its tough sticking to them when theres some great other armies out there.

I like the fluff so far, only nit pick is if they have a function STC they access to functioning technology that would according to fluff surpass the tau on many levels, and be insanely powerful. (It made space marines and conquered the universes type deal.) I feel you down played the EDF's capabilities to much, and made the Tau to important.
I like the origin and organization.
56423
Post by: ashotninja
I see thier stc as the tech long before space marine was even thought of.. therefore the edf have not created their owner legion of marines... perhaps the stc is for various war machines... I also dont want the edf to have acsess to titans of any kind... for the same reason.
Eden left pre emperor, pre age of strife, pre crusade... so I guess tech like marines was not around even before thunder warriors

I can't wait for the slew of updates after Xmas.
thats really nice of you to say dude, although im not really doing grimdark , im slowly making my stuff look grimy and worn... kinda more 40k'ish...... but i guess my favourite thing to do is make stuff to represent a 40k version of the modern equivelent... although i really need to work on my infantry painting...
tagsta wrote:hello whats the color recipe for your basic tanks? would like to replicate that on my aegis defense lines/bastion
many thanks in advance,
eric
hey bud, the recipe is as follows..
i start with army painter desert yellow spray..
single heavy wash using army painter strong tone wash.
hand paint each panel flat using old gw desert yellow (no real new equivelent)
dry brush with screaming skull of ushabi bone (both really similar)
basic bolt rusting and drippage use seraphim sepia.
rustage use any dark brown , i use modelair RAL 8017 71.041 armour brown.
weapons metallic parts use leadbelther with nuln oil wash and highlight with leadbelcher if needed.
thats about it really... if your going as far as pigments then i coat the low areas and tracks with MIG gulf war desert, and MIG beach sand.
hopew that goes good for your projects, any other questions feel free to ask.
also i forgot to say on the list of finished stuff needed to be photographed is also a manticore SAM platform... a skyshield landing pad (built and painted in 2 evenings, enjoyed doing that...) and a ageis defense line aswell...
its gonna be an explosion of pics come first week of january.

While with all the races your work is still clearly in the realm of Sci-Fi the conversions seem add a touch of realism and believability to the models. I think its because you are making models that while sci fi are based on real world military examples we may be more used to seeing in films ect.

for instance, Eden the ship would have left the mars dockyard looking to find a new location to set up a 'new' earth, not long after the ship left the warpstorms cut off eden (ship) from the imperium and thats when they got lost in the warp and ended up in the far depths of the eastern fringe.... hidden from imperial veiw.... cue the age of strife....
id also like to add that the eden ship is techniqually a massive factory and terraformer ship, with a still intact and fully funcioning stc and stc factory... this is how the EDF have acsess to build all imperial type vehicles and many thought lost by the mechanicum...
ownng the last fully functioning stc makes the EDF the prime target for imperial and mainly the mechanicum to find them... althought they know of the existance of Eden, its location is still unknown.... the only race that know of the EDF are the tau.... and the alliance between the tau and the imperum are growing stronger , its only a matter of time before the imperium are told of Edens location.
All of this is plausible considering it's stated to take place before the Age of Strife. Knowing that the Eden ship existed and knowing where it went are two different things, so I'm okay so far with the Mechanicum searching for it; there's a lot of empty space in the galaxy and a huge area to search between Sol and the Eastern Fringe.
tau vs eden wars.
the tau as a fledgling empire first found Eden and attempted to overpower the planet, the tau were still new at fighting and struggled to take the planet... dispite the taus doctrines they saw the people of eden as deserving their respect to live on independant of even the tau way of life and chose to insted use the EDF to help train and guide the tau on how to effectivly defeat human imperial forces... the tau use eden for trade and have a small base on the northern glacier, for this the tau errected massive camo , shielding and ecm feilds to effectively hide the planet and its inhabitants from imperial view. (something like that)
I've got to stop here. Canonically, those who refuse to embrace the Greater Good are destroyed. What makes Eden so special that the Ethereals would help a society that doggedly resists assimilation instead of subjugating or destroying it?
# the eden crash landed on the planet and it took 12000 years to cultivate/ terraform.
# eden has an incrediblly powerful psyker called the envoy that targets potential candidates for eden citizenship and directs then how to get to eden via a pickup service (or something like that)
1: How did the crew survive for twelve thousand years on a crashed ship on a planet unsuitable for life?
2: How does the Envoy, an un-soul bound psyker of such power, protect himself from the perils of the Warp?
im gonna do a peice about edens laws and governmental system, regarding the use and discovery of latent psykers... races within eden society, the make up and tactical uses of the EDF, the implentation of the EDf against the oncoming threat of the imperium. etc.
How did Eden survive the Age of Strife with unregulated psykers? The planet would have to deal with daemonic incursions, i.e. a threat completely beyond their understanding and ability to fight.
From your quick overview, I've gathered that a special super-ship leaves Mars to create a new Earth and disappears into the Warp at the beginning of the Age of Strife. It gets to the other side of the galaxy and crashes. This crash somehow does not damage its manufactories, hull integrity, or supplies, allowing the colonists to survive while the ship spends TWELVE THOUSAND YEARS terraforming the planet that likely suffered an extinction-level event when the ship hit it. They maintain a culture based on twentieth-century Western customs and traditions in a setting that is extremely unfriendly to that sort of thinking. Their contact with the Tau results in the Tau giving them all sorts of tech to help them instead of obliterating them for rejecting the Greater Good. They have a super-powerful psyker to help people from outside their society find them while human psykers are normally either conditioned to serve the Imperium, killed outright, rule primitive cultures as god-kings, suffer horrific psychic assaults that leave them gibbering messes, or explode when daemons get them.
...
I have nothing bad to say about your model conversions and paint jobs. Those are exceptional. It is your fiction with which I have issues. This society is completely at odds with the themes and moods of the Warhammer 40,000 setting. At least one major faction acts completely out of character to accommodate this group's existence. I half-expect the Imperium to come along, see Eden, go "Keep up the good work!" and continue on its merry way. There are a lot of questions that need answering before this faction will look plausible for the setting.

i think thats a acurate way of perceving my style... i love modern military vehicles and particulary US army divisions... each department has their own style and weaponary as well as their ways of dealing with badguys... i wanted to capture that diversity with my forces, which in turn lead to making a mixed race army... something i havent really seen in the hobby before.

cool, as the core of the story itself i thought that this is not only potentially the most important part but as you say, the most plausible awell.... i really want thenm to have a enemy... something to prepare for.
tau vs eden wars.
the tau as a fledgling empire first found Eden and attempted to overpower the planet, the tau were still new at fighting and struggled to take the planet... dispite the taus doctrines they saw the people of eden as deserving their respect to live on independant of even the tau way of life and chose to insted use the EDF to help train and guide the tau on how to effectivly defeat human imperial forces... the tau use eden for trade and have a small base on the northern glacier, for this the tau errected massive camo , shielding and ecm feilds to effectively hide the planet and its inhabitants from imperial view. I've got to stop here. Canonically, those who refuse to embrace the Greater Good are destroyed. What makes Eden so special that the Ethereals would help a society that doggedly resists assimilation instead of subjugating or destroying it?
i agree with you... i had intended the interaction with the tau to be when they first started to expand the empire and found a powerful foe that they could not yet beat... who infact helped guide them towards the EDFs main foe... i also intended the tau as an ally , but really i was kinda cluching at straws with a weak connection...
basically i want the EDF to be a fully defensive army, having the STC means that when the imperium do come knocking they cannot just destroy the planet, they would have to engage in a fair fight.... and having an ally would be a nice thing for them to have.
# the eden crash landed on the planet and it took 12000 years to cultivate/ terraform.
# eden has an incrediblly powerful psyker called the envoy that targets potential candidates for eden citizenship and directs then how to get to eden via a pickup service (or something like that)
1: How did the crew survive for twelve thousand years on a crashed ship on a planet unsuitable for life?
well, perhaps not 'crash' then... what about they had to land on a potential planet, after a few thousand years the people of the eden ship began to build the city around the landed ship...
also... there would have been many powerstuggles within the ship during the terraforming process, and hundreds of generations of families without even setting foot on the planet...
(potential for an influential leader to create the eden way of life)
( also linked with the next question... the eden left mars with only a few navigaters... the humans aboard were not psykers infact were not allowed apon the mission... any psykers in the EDF as of now were found by the envoy )
2: How does the Envoy, an un-soul bound psyker of such power, protect himself from the perils of the Warp?
i think it says somewhere in the chaos codex that there are or were good deamons... that could be a possible answer.... call me out if im wrong but that couuld also be a possible part of why the envoy is very powerful and potentially immune to the effects of the warp.... but then again i dont know all 40k lore, so this is just a possible method of getting new races to eden... i really could not think of anything else ... i kinda based the envoy on doctor xavior from the xmen and how he finds mutants...
but i wasnt sure what i wanted the envoy to look like which is why i didnt describe him at all... so figuring out what he looks like would be excellent as id love to make a model for him.
im gonna do a peice about edens laws and governmental system, regarding the use and discovery of latent psykers... races within eden society, the make up and tactical uses of the EDF, the implentation of the EDf against the oncoming threat of the imperium. etc.
How did Eden survive the Age of Strife with unregulated psykers? The planet would have to deal with daemonic incursions, i.e. a threat completely beyond their understanding and ability to fight.
i think i might have answered that above, as in there were no psykers on eden when it landed.... psykers are perhaps a dangerous but nessasary part of warfare in the 40th millenia, which is why they are recruiting them now..
From your quick overview, I've gathered that a special super-ship leaves Mars to create a new Earth and disappears into the Warp at the beginning of the Age of Strife. i say based on 20th century customs but in truth that is just my way of saying its 'like' or similar perhaps... i very much doubt that there would be anything from the year 2020 18k years after...
i think 12 k years is a long time but in an isolated part of space with little neighbours and no need for expansion, a single way of life could be maintained for a very long time... perhaps the people of eden have a good life, and have no need to rebel... i know its not grimdark but considering that the edf outright hate and fear the imperium for losing contact with them/ never looking from them... stories handed down from generation to generation could have sealed the hatred of the imperium and almost kept the doctrines alive ... although thats a stretch given the amount of time.
your right about the tau bit... perhaps the tech is from the STC insted... i just like the tau flying stuff lol.
also i like to say that eden is located far from where the imperium have ever ventured, if the want to find eden they have to look further that ever thought of.
(just thought of this... perhaps not 12000 years... time is percieved differently while in the warp, so perhaps it has just been a few thousand years since they got lost to them , but much time in real life) - (???)
...

thanks for your imput dude, i have ideas but need someone to slap me now and again and say 'NO' ... its my aim to upset the balance of moods within 40k settings... im fed up with the saying theres only war... well at eden not so much... there has to be hope somewhere in the galaxy and a safe place for anyone seeking refuge... humans do have the capacity to be good too.
but considering the hate the edf has for the imperium, and how badly the imperial war effort needs the fuctioning stc, i doubt they would let it slip away.

hey, it seems to me that a good solution would be to play on the Eden name a bit - what if the terraforming ship, caught in a warpstorm or flung off course in someway - maybe travelling through warp space to explain the loss of time - arrived in a system that was shrouded from the outside.
The terraformer ship crashes on a modern day 'garden of eden' and although hopelessly lost, everyone is pretty happy with where they are but it's impossible to contact outside the system. They encounter the Tau but even the Tau can't reliably find a way to reach Eden so there is limited communication and trading.
But now perhaps the anomaly that is keeping Eden isolated is beginning to change. Maybe a mechanicus probe has reached them, or the Tau have figured a way to navigate the anomaly more reliably, so the Edenites are building defenses as quickly as they can, and hiring mercenaries/any outsiders that can reach Eden.
TLDR: The warp did it.

well i decided i was too lazy to write the codex and sort the fluff since the new guard codex was iminent...
so... i guess its been far too ferking long sinse i updated my plog with actual pictures, not just false promises and excuses for inactivity... so il start with..
EDF autocannon heavy weapon team.
next up...
EDF Ageis line and skyshield
i finished these ages ago... and are a stable of my lists, without the skyshield i doubt i could win as many games as i do... and the ageis is a guard must.
next up..
an unusual concept for a unit i thought wouldnt suit the look and the feel of the EDF..
This is my techpriest enginseer with 4 servitors... bundled together into one unit model.
EDF Repair mech.
you might be thinking.. WTF!!! thats not a... but yes it is...
it counts as the techseer, 2 servitors with servo arms and 2 servitors with multimeltas
basically its got 5 wounds, for every wound removed it loses a weapon with the 4+ save... the last wound is the 3+ save i imagine is the mech core.
so with one unit its got ..
laspistol, 3 servo arms , 2 multimeltas ..
4, 4+ saves and 1 3+ save...
make sense... hope so.
and lastly...
a counts as Valdor tank hunter based on a 1/35 scale PkZf 4 ww2 german light tank....
and yeah... just noticed i forgot to paint the backpack hanging off the right side... il make sure il get that sorted.
i have more pics ready but il find some time later in the week to chuck them up..
comments welcome!

trial and error really... i redid it three times before i was really happy with the finished look...
based with leadbelcher
black wash
airbrushed from dark to light using
model air - uk med blue - french blue - light sea blue - white
it really glows in the pics, im really happy with how it turned out... il be going back and redo-ing some of the previous OSL in my new technique.

i sure do!... the turox is defo getting a buffalo 6x6 workover as an EOD style with the bucket/claw... should pick one up at salute on the weekend... also going to make some propper looking stormies, with minimal use of the new kit...
i think il get a hydra/wyvern but not use the turret as is.. im not keen on its profile so il make one like i made my griffon and use the turret as a standalone quad gun for the aegis line.

seemed a little smaller than last year... not know why... less sellers i think...
what did you pick up?
i got
astra militarium codex (hate that name)
k9 dogs from anvil
loads of conversion parts from zinge
bunch of figures from hasslefree for necromunda (im starting a new campaign at the end of the month)
a cool ninja i was going to use for marbo... but now i find out hes dead...so i guess hes another necromunda charachter.
bunch of things from atenocities for a necro crawler im working on.
BunkerBob wrote:Just a small tip, if you do not know you can use regular medical gauze, dip it in glue and leave it in a position you want and let it dry. Works like a charm for camo netting!
ive tried it and i really didnt like the results... maybe im not great at it... id rather pay ridiclulous amounts for brass etched ones from accurate armour... although i think i might use the gauze technique on scenery as its not so important to keep the details.
thanks anyway for the advice dude.
ok... got a few of my WIP's photographed for you all to see whats coming from me in the future..
bear in mine my other wips already posted on previous pages... i havent forgot about them (ac130 and the showstopper bomber)
first up..
my malcador counts as superheavy tank... based on a 1/35 scale M551 sheridan from the veitnam era
pretty easy conversion and the thing just looks nearly perfect as is... its already covered in rivits (although i might redo for larger ones)
standard battlecannon/lascannon/heavy stubber loadout on a malc.
next up... we are heading to the EDF's naval units.
im planning on doing a appocalypse game some day at my local shop which involves the imperials doing a major d-day landing style game against an entrenched enemy, i plan on making a few of these ships to send in troops and lay cover fire while other amphibious transports push the flanks... well we will see... heres what i got so far.
now for my 'ARES' class superheavy walker.
although i forgot to put a figure next to it for scale, it stands at exactly 200mm tall... bear in mind its far from being finished and will have its own custom datasheet with multiple magnetised weapon loadouts.
next up, something fun i decided to make when i was bored...
its a ratlings personal transport vehicle...
points 35
type- fast/transport
holds 10 ratlings overall (includes driver gunner and 8 passengers) when disembarked all ratlings pour out rendering the vehicle as unmanned.
F-10 S-10 R-10
no fixed weapons
comes with camo nets as basic.
one ratling may fire from the top hatch while moving.
someone check this datasheet out and see if its ok for me please... my friends have already ok'ed it for gaming.
lastly... and the thing you have all been waiting for...
MY TAUROX PRIME.
this has been one of my fastest turnarounds for a project cos ive been so hyped to be the one of first to make a really decent conversion of this vehicle..ive already seen some try... but i really think ive nailed it with this one.
as you can see, its really quite different...
all waepons are magnetised including the turrets battlecannon and gatling, the autocannons have been relocated to the front.
the angle of the bonnet has been made flatter.
removed the awful side doors and replaced with armoured panelling.
changed all the vison slits for ballistic glass.
added 30mm to the rear.
added 6 wheels on improved parrelel axles.
added top hatch.
ladder, panniers, stowage, air filters, exhaust, sparewheel to make it look like a buffalo 6x6 .
please let me know what you think guys!

I don't like the ballistic glass, though paint may change my opinion. Otherwise you nailed it, much improved. If you do a second one you should add a mine sweeper in there.

Looking good all over. The Ares head is very clever, and having those bits lying in my own box tempts me enormously! Your Taurox is interesting, I think it had to be treated as a quad, though I'd like to do a fully tracked version I think.I like the classic rhino style top hatches btw especially.

I only got two Basius basing pads (the Sulaco pair)for when I get my AvP kickstarter models... My boy got the latest 'not Dr Who' model from Heresy. Spent the rest of the show getting inspiration for my next gaming project - wild west.
