Hello everyone,

Even the most crazed follower of the blood god needs some variety from time to time. And frankly, I’m a sucker for being distracted by side projects anyway, so I guess it was just a matter of time…

I have always been interested in the background laid down by the game Inquisitor, ever since it was released in the late 90s. For those of you not in the know, Inquisitor is a game about the shadowy wars between members of the Holy Inquisition and various heretics, aliens and other undesirables. It is also a game about the wars between loyal Inquisitors and their fallen brethren. Or between two Inquisitors of merely different philosophies. Inquisitor is firmly rooted in 40k lore, perhaps, it might be argued, even more so than regular Warhammer 40k, but it’s not a game about large scale warfare. It’s about the shadows, the places in between the cracks. It’s about the strange and sometimes demented characters that can be seen lurking around in the background of John Blanche’s illustrations. It is also utterly fantastic.

But I feel a bit like I am preaching to the choir here. So, long story short, if you don’t know anything about Inquisitor, shame on you! ;-)

The original Inquisitor was played in a 54mm scale with very big, detailed models. And this is probably the reason why it took me so long to catch on: Those models were great, but they were all metal and there was only so much variety. As an avid converter of plastic models, I wasn’t too impressed.

And then I happened upon several websites advertising playing Inquisitor at the 28mm scale. Either by employing a hybrid of the Inquisitor and Necromunda rulesets called “Inquisimunda” or by using the original rules. And suddenly, a whole new universe opened up: I could build characters for Inquisitor in a scale I was already comfortable with, using all the great bits from the Warhammer Fantasy and 40k lines. Or from anywhere I liked. I was immediately hooked!

At the same time, I discovered the work of a number of truly spectacularly talented people who had built their own Inquisior models at 28mm: Commissar Molotov, migsula, PDH and JRN, to name just a few extraordinary artists. When I saw those models, I was sure that I absolutely HAD to build my own Inquisitor retinues. Here’s where I was after a couple of months:

You may have seen this image already on Molotov’s blog, Inq28. This is the motley crew of misfits accompanying the radical Inquisitor Lazarus Antrecht. In the future, I will be showcasing each of my Inquisitor models in more detail, describing the conversion work as well as the general background for the character. We’ll start off with the big man, the Inquisitor himself:

Inquisitor Lazarus Antrecht, Ordo Malleus

There is no simple truth when it comes to Inquisitor Lazarus Antrecht of the Ordo Malleus: Some say he is a loyal servant of the Throne. Some call him a dangerous radical. Others maintain that he has turned, fallen away from the light of the Emperor and come to worship the ruinous powers.

Many have tried to ascertain which school of thought within the holy Inquisition Lazarus Antrecht follows. It seems reasonably certain that he was once an Amalathian, but his ideals seem to have changed somewhere along the way. There are those who now call him an Istvaanian, perhaps even with Xanthite leanings, while more jaded members of the Inquisition argue that Antrecht is the sole follower of the philosphy of Antrechtism, a true army of one. The truth is that Lazarus Antrecht would probably laugh at all of those attempts at classification: It is for him alone and for the God Emperor of Mankind to know where his true allegiance lies.

The fact that Antrecht shows only disdain for those who question his loyalty to the Emperor and the secrecy with which he surrounds himself have convinced more puritan elements within the Ordos that he is a dangerous heretic who must be taken down for the good of the Imperium, and many have tried, among them his former friend Inquisitor Gotthardt of the Ordo Hereticus. So far, he has managed to elude his pursuers, but he has been forced ever deeper into the shadows, manipulating and plotting where other Inquisitors would conduct their work more openly. This suits him fine, however, for Lazarus Antrecht is a true puppetmaster, highly intelligent and with piercing insight into the inner workings of the Imperium. By sheer necessity, Antrecht has become well aquainted with the shadows, and it is no wonder that his retinue comprises many colourful indivduals from the somewhat …darker corners of the galaxy.

Accordingly, there are few means that the Inquisitor would refrain from using. He is convinced that every tool has its use. And in Lazarus Antrecht’s world, almost everything can become a tool at the right time.

Whatever it is that the Inquisitor truly seeks, one thing is clear: Those who find themselves between him and his goals have to face a formidable and resourceful opponent.

The model for Inquisitor Antrecht was very much inspired by Phil Kelly’s Inquisitor Liechtenstein (who in turn is a conversion of the original Eisenhorn model). I really wanted to create a model that, while not clad in ornate Power armour, would convey a sense of confidence and experience. I have always loved Phil Kelly’s retine for Inquisitor Liechtenstein, so that was the perfect place to go to for inspiration!

Antrecht was built using mainly parts from the Cadian Command Squad. The puny Laspistol was exchanged for a suitably bulky Boltpistol. His secondary sidearm comes from the Kroot kit. And finally, his daemon sword is a standard sword from the Warhammer Fantasy Warriors of Chaos. I wanted something clearly chaotic without going totally overboard, so I think the sword was a nice compromise.

The most important part of the model (and basically of any Inquisitor) was the head: I chose a bare head from the Chaos Terminator Lord box. Not only did it resemble the original Eisenhorn head, but it also had an expression of slightly haughty amusement – very fitting for an Inquisitor who has seen quite a lot in his career and feels he knows something that most of his critics don’t. The base was done using a resin piece from the 40k basing set.

I wanted Antrecht to look somewhat distinguished, even regal, but without being to gaudy in the colour department, so I went for luxurious tones that were still slightly subdued. The below average freehand =I= symbol on his shoulder admittedly was a moment of weakness – I might replace it with a decal somewhere along the way.

So, that’s my rundown on Inquisitor in general and my own Inquisitor Antrecht in particular. Let me know what you think!

Saw these guys on Inq28 and thought they were fantastic....as you know I had to tell others.

So since they are here in the nice to use Dakka, rather than the pain in the arse Blogger, I shall ask the question that has been burning in my head since....

How did you do paint the blue jacket that Antrecht is wearing? I love it.

These guys are absolutely fantastic! I hope you get to have at least one game with them.

Looking forward to seeing more.

Peter

Hey Peter,

thanks for the kind words!

Concerning your question: The jacket was painted with a basecoat mixed from equal parts GW Chaos Black and Vallejo Halcon Milenario Turquoise (GW Hawk Turquoise should yield very similar results, I have no idea what would be a corresponding colour in the new GW paint range, though). For the highlights, more Turquoise was added to the mix. Quite an easy recipe. Oh, and I also used a lighter shade of the colour on his Daemon weapon.

Hope that helps

Thanks guys!

Here are some more pictures of Antrecht that I forgot to post yesterday:

@Hologram: While I'll yet be dealing with the Mandalorian in detail, I think I can already reveal to you that the head is simply a Khorne Berzerker helmet with the "Bunny ears" clipped off. Most Boba Fett conversions do this, so I guess it's not too much of a secret

So here's the next member of Antrecht's warband and the first model I ever built for Inquisitor: Magos Explorator Hiram Zeiss.

Magos Explorator Hiram Zeiss

Magos Hiram Zeiss has always been a treasure hunter of sorts, but in his case, the treasure in question is knowledge. Educated on Mars, Magos Zeiss quickly displayed a thirst for knowledge that even his senior Mechanicus priests found slightly disquieting. Additionally, all attempts to keep his questing mind contained within the confines of a Mechanicus Forgeworld proved futile. Magos Zeiss was thus elevated to the rank of Magos Explorator and inducted into one of the Explorator fleets constantly scouring the galaxy for lost knowledge from the Dark Age of Technology. It was during this quest that Zeiss and his team came under attack from a Xeno-cult on the world of Varunth Minoris, and the Explorator party was nearly wiped out. It was only through the intervention of Inquisitor Antrecht that Magos Zeiss survived. He has been a member of the Inquisitor’s entourage ever since.

It would, however, be very naive to think that his association with Antrecht is based on some kind of gratitude: Aloof and emotionless beyond measure, Magos Zeiss has simply realised that the Inquisitor’s highly unconventional modus operandi is very likely to lead him to all kinds of forgotten places and, by extension, to many caches of forgotten knowledge as well.

In his pursuit of knowledge, Hiram Zeiss has gone further than most members of the Mechanicus, and it is his relentless quest for things some would say were best left forgotten that have alienated him from his fellow Magi. At best, the techpriests of Mars regard him as a wayward child. But there are also those who think that Magos Zeiss is walking a very dangerous road and that his quest had best be ended before he ever reaches the end of it…

Let me start off by saying that I think that there is a severe shortage of Mechanicus models. Sure, you’ve got the Enginseer and a FW Magos, but apart from that, the Mechanicus doesn’t get much love from GW, which, in my opinion, is pretty hard to justify: Those guys are just oozing the gothic madness that is Warhammer 40k. So it was clear to me that one of my Inquisitor models would have to be a Magos. Once again, I was drawn to Phil Kelly’s models for inspiration. It doesn’t take a degree in rocket science to see that I was quite heavily inspired by his Magos Demitri model when I built Hiram Zeiss.

The base for the model were a WFB Empire flagellant body, head and right arm. I think that the tattered robes are a very good fit for an obsessed Magos on the run. I added a respirator and bionic arm from the Cadian Command sprue and cobbled together some kind of servo harness from a couple of bits. This piece of equipment helps him on his quest for knowledge by providing all the tools you might need in dark and abandoned places, i.e. a chainblade and some kind of plasma cutter. The upside is that the tools can also be used to tear through any competition if need be

Looking back on it now, it might have been better to go for some believable Mechadendrites instead of the clunky backpack, but oh well…

All that was left were some finishing touches: The head of the chainaxe (a nod to Phil Kelly’s Magos Dimitry) came from the Khorne Berzerkers and the original (bare) feet of the model were replaced with feet I cut off an old Space Crusade android. This was supposed to show that Hiram is a bit more augmented under the hood than you might initally suspect.

When painting him, going for red robes was a no-brainer. I did however try to make them look threadbare and stained. For his skin, I went for a bloodless, dead look. The rest were various shades of metal and rust. I did also try to add a (fairly primitive) lighting effect to his plasma cutter.

All in all, I wanted him to be clearly identifiable as a Mechanicus model, but at the same time to look somewhat unkempt and frayed around the edges. Just the right appearance for a rogue Magos who is obsessed with his quest for knowledge…

So there, my second INQ28 model. Hope you enjoyed the ride C&C are always welcome!

The magos really is excellent, for the simplicity of the conversion. The red is a lovely shade. You're good at painting robes and cloth.

Alright, everyone, here’s another Inquisitor model, and this time I even have some WIP pictures. Yay!

To me, one of the most interesting archetypes in Inquisitor is that of the Daemonhosts: They really show the extent of what some Inquisitors are prepared to do in their service to the Emperor. And with Lazarus Antrecht being an indiviual of a fairly radical persuasion, it was clear to me that I would need a Daemonhost for his retinue.

Unfortunately, the official GW models at 28mm are, in a word, hideous (and not in a good way) and lack nearly all of the subtle menace exuded by the original Cherubael model – if anything, they look like amateurish attempts at recapturing what made Cherubael so great. So it stood to reason that I would once again have to resort to my two favourite pasttimes: converting and kitbashing. After a bit of research, I discovered a couple of great options for converting a daemonhost. Two of my favourites were these:

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z121/mnesimache/inq28/DaemonhostFinal.jpg
http://www.pbase.com/migsula/image/67702961/original.jpg

There was a problem though: Both models used the same head from the WFB Warriors of Chaos, incidentally one of my favourite heads ever. These were so hard to get by that there was no way I would use up one of my stock on a non World Eaters model. And I also really didn’t want to use the horrible metal models as a basis for my conversion. What to do?

I jumped in at the deep end and bought a box of Crypt Ghouls. It seemed to me that those were the models with the look most fitting for a Daemonhost: tortured, emaciated and with a slightly feral quality. Plus I would have lots and lots of leftovers for different projects (Twists, Arco Flagellants,…) So, after much bending and cutting and some greenstuffing to boot, here’s what I came up with:

As you can probably see, the legs, torso, arms and head all come from the Crypt Ghouls, so that was quite easy. I did however have to do quite a serious bit of work on the pose: Crypt Ghouls are all hunchbacked and bent forward, while I wanted my Daemonhost to be floating and looking like its poor body was at full stretch. I achieved this by changing the way the torso connects to the legs and by greenstuffing in a new stomach. I hid the rough spots of the conversion behind some kind of religious icon – no idea where this came from. I also repositioned the arms so that the Daemonhost looked like it was reaching for something only visible to itself. Again, the seams of the conversion work were camouflaged, this time with a purity seal.

I also wanted to have the Daemonhost clearly floating, so I had to find something to keep it in the air. In the end, I used a part of a chain from the Chaos vehicle sprue. It was stable enough to hold the model in the air, and the skull attached to its end offered a solid point of contact with the base. Further chains were added to show how the Daemonhost is bound and “weighed down”. I kept the strange, bony quills emerhing from the model’s back since they fitted the concept of daemonic possession in my opinion. I also added a tongue from a Bloodletter of Khorne to enhance the appearance. The last part of the conversion was the base: I used some cork and a couple of strange spikes from the Chaos Terminator Lord sprue.

When it came to painting the model, I went for a very unhealthy skin tone achieved by generously washing a basecoat of GW Dheneb Stone with GW Leviathan Purple. This led to an almost pink colour (maybe even too much so, in hindsight), but the colour added to the twisted, inhuman feeling of the model, so I guess that it’s all cool in the end.

The rest was all detailing. I highlighted the scars and welts all over the model and painted all the details. The bone quills and tongue were painted purple to show how the daemon is slowly emerging fromwithin the host body, twisting and transforming it in the process. The spikes on the base were painted to look like some kind of daemonic growth erupting from the floor as the Daemonhost floats by.

While there is a couple of rough spots on the model, I still far prefer it to the official GW ones. So with the modeling and painting out of the way, all that remained was to cook up some background for the character…

Daemonhost Zalambur

Inquisitor Antrecht still thought about Rikkert Nozick from time to time, and it was always a bittersweet memory. When Antrecht had come to Barsavia Hive to investigate the actions of the notorious Heretek Amnon Helix, Rikkert had been there from the start, trying to be helpful and ingratiate himself with the Inquisitor. Still, he had been a competent guide and managed to open quite a few doors in the hive, so Antrecht had indulged him.

Then the young man had asked to be inducted into the Inquisitor’s retinue, and while Antrecht had laughed at the audacity of the idea, he had still seriously considered it. He hated to let a potential asset go to waste, after all. But he had felt something in the young man that he did not like, some kind of inner flaw or deficiency, hidden by his eagerness to please. And while Antrecht could not quite put his finger on what it was that was bothering him, he had felt that there was a thirst within Rikkert Nozick that could never be quenched by service to the God Emperor alone. So Antrecht had turned him down and set off into the underhive on his own.

But fate is a harsh mistress, or so they say, and so when Antrecht was dangling above a yawning chasm, bloodied and broken after his confrontation with the heretic Helix, just barely hanging on with his last ounce of strength, it was Rikkert Nozick who had slipped from the shadows and offered to save the Inquisitor. He did however have one condition: Antrecht’s life would be saved, but Rikkert would join him as a member of his retinue when he left the planet.

Antrecht had little choice in the matter if he wanted to live, so he gave his word. He limped from the underhive, hurt but alive, leaning on his new “apprentice”, for that was how the young man had come to see himself.

The Inquisitor had other plans, however, for he simply could not trust a man who had used a moment of weakness to haggle for privileges. But then, a promise had been made, and Lazarus Antrecht knew a lot about the importance of promises.

Fortunately, fate intervened again: An interesting opportunity presented itself soon afterwards and so, when Inquisitor Antrecht left the planet, young Nozick joined him as a permanent member of his retinue. His wish had been fulfilled.

All this Antrecht remembered. And as he cast a sideways glance at the pale creature floating along next to him, he could not help but think that there was still much of the young man he had encountered in Barsavia Hive in its sharp features. The Daemonhost noticed Antrecht’s attention and bared its iron teeth in a rictus grin. Yes, even now, the resemblance was uncanny.

Inquisitor Antrecht still thought about Rikkert Nozick from time to time. And it was always a bittersweet memory.
And a reminder to always be careful what you wish for.

So, what do you think?

The corpse cart! That's an option I didn't even think of in the first place. Oh well, I guess bending the arms and legs in the right direction and adding rough areas of greenstuff did work out in the end, so...

I think I'll really have to buy one of those corpse cart kits one of these days: Just too many awesome bits to pass over...

Well, the flagellants and Chrono Gladiator will yet have to wait a while. I want to post something bigger on them as soon as I have written some kind of fluff. As a little consolation prize, here's the Bounty Hunter though. Far be it from me to displease one of my most frequent commenters

It's really not that hard to guess who this guy is based on. It's also not a very original idea: There's lots of Boba Fett conversions here on Dakka alone. I stumbled upon some of them and felt the ambition to build my own version. And that was it, I simply had to try it

He's a pretty easy kitbash too: I used legs from the Chaos Marauders, a Cadian torso, some old CSM arms and a helmet from the Khorne Berzerkers with the "bunny ears" clipped off. Then I added a couple of accessories from the Kroot kit. His pistol was spliced together from an old Boltpistol and the shaft of an old WFB Chaos Warrior halberd - yes, really

Since he's more or less a fun project, I didn't really envision him as a character the way I did with the other members of Antrecht's retinue. I just thought that he'd make a cool enough Bounty Hunter. And the original Boba Fett's freelancer attitude fit with Antrecht's outlook quite nicely, so he became a member of this particular family

However, after a bit of thought, a couple of ideas how to insert him into "official" 40k lore presented themselves:

Bounty Hunter "The Mandalorian"

Not much is known about the mysterious figure frequently accompanying Lazarus Antrecht on his more "colourful" outings. He is a Bounty Hunter, that much is clear. A sellsword to be sure. And, without any doubt, a professional. Few have seen him without his trademark suit of battered armour of an unknown provenience. However, those who have managed to catch a glimpse of his features and body maintain that his skin is a milky white, making him look more like a ghost than a man. If this strange feature is caused by his habit of always covering his body or it is the product of something more sinister seems impossibly to ascertain. Some whisper about an army created from the genestock of the Imperium's greatest, a force of Albino warriors surrounded by misfortune and secrecy. And while no one would ever openly confront the Mandalorian with these rumours, there is a name that follows him wherever he goes, a whisper, passing through the shadows: "Afriel"...

Right, I guess that's all there is to him. Let me know what you think

You're right though: With this project, the development of characters is really paramount - something that often gets shoved into the background with "regular" 40k armies. Although I have to say that my working on Inquisitor models has had a great impact on how I build my models for my World Eaters: more as characters, less as playing pieces

Thanks, mate! To tell you the truth, I was kinda surprised too

In the end, it all comes down to the choice of head, in my opinion. So my advice to everyone building Inquisitor models would be to have a very good look at heads from all the different GW armies and systems (and maybe even beyond that)!

Which head was it though? Looking beyond GW's range is something I already do I'm working on a Grey Knights Army and the main basis is on old Rackham models although the odd Black Scorpion and Lead Adventure has been known to make an appearance. I've also sort of slipped and made an entire Zulu guard army.

The head is from the Chaos Terminator Lord kit. It's one of the two bare-headed options that come with the kit. It's also easily one of my favourite head options, because the look of haughty arrogance is great for Chaos Lords and Inquisitors alike It also does look quite a bit like Eisenhorn.

Alright, everyone, here's the next one of Antrecht's henchmen. And I can promise the character is a little more serious than a revamped Boba Fett

The idea of adding some kind of assassin to Inquisitor Antrecht’s retinue had been banging around in the back of my head for quite some time. However, I wasn’t really sure how to go about it: Perhaps add a Death Cult Assassin? But I didn’t really have an interesting modeling idea for one of those (yet). At the same time, I have always liked the different Imperial Assassin models released by GW, but I really wanted to build an Assassin from plastic rather than use a “readymade” metal figure.

Everything started to make sense when two different influences intersected. The first of those was me reading through the old “Heavenfall” Adventurescape released as part of the “Inquisitor Conspiracies” series. I came across a character called “The Sentinel”, a rogue Vindicare Assassin turned serial killer, ostensibly driven mad by something so horrible it also turned him deaf. What a cool concept! The second thing that influenced me was when Ron Saikowski (of FTW fame) posted his fantastic plastic Eversor conversion. Take a look:

http://fromthewarp.blogspot.de/2011/09/plastic-eversor-assassin-conversion-wip.html

And that pretty much decided it: I wanted an Assassin that was pretty recognisable as one of the Imperial Assassin types, but not quite. After all, a true Eversor Assassin wouldn’t really make a compelling character, right?

Anyway, I gathered my bits and reveled in the modeling challenge. Here’s what I ended up with:

Where Ron used an Eldar guardian as a base for his conversion, I was lucky enough to get my hands on a leftover Dark Eldar torso and legs courtesy of my ever helpful cousin Andy: The model was originally a Wych crew member from the Dark Eldar Venom kit, which explains the somewhat athletic pose – just what I wanted for my Assassin!

From there on out, it was really all about the bits. Like I said, I wanted the model to look fairly similar to an Eversor Assassin. I added a skull from some skeleton kit or other as his skull mask. His sword was originally a Falchion from the Grey Knights kit. I also added a couple of smaller bits and bobs to make him look less Xenos and more Imperial. The severed head was a shout out to Ron’s model as well as to one of the older Eversor models from GW.
What I really like about the model though is the pose: It’s really full of dynamism which I think is a rather nice fit for a killing machine on the prowl…

For the paintjob, I chose a rather muted palette, with a couple of red accents as the only standout colour. I really wanted to tie him together with the rest of Antrecht’s merry little freakshow, and I guess I succeeded.

His face is the only part of him I’m not super-happy with: I would have loved to add a little more contrast, but the detailing on the skull was so soft that I didn’t dare use too many coats of paint, lest the details, especially the teeth, be totally obscured.

Like with all my INQ28 models, I wrote some background for him. I asked myself how Antrecht would come to employ an assassin. And how an assassin in turn would come to work for Antrecht…

I really stepped out of my comfort zone writing this, and I am not quite sure if my English is up to the task. I’ll let you be the judges of that. Here goes:

Officio Assassinorum Operative Sigma

Regaining consciousness. A room. Dimly lit. Walls, floor and ceiling made from heavily stained metal. The only source of light directly above. Blinding.

Bodily functions normal. No apparent damage. First attempt at movement proves futile. Arms and legs restrained. Head also restrained. Shackles show no signs of yielding.

“It seems our guest is awake.”

A voice. Male. Mocking undertone. Humanoid individual (owner of voice?) steps into field of vision. Human male. About 6 foot tall. Dressed in plain clothes. Appears to be in his early sixties. However, subtle signs of rejuvenat treatments. Also hints of augmentic implants on the back of the head. Facial features reveal individual to be Inquisitor Lazarus Antrecht, Ordo Malleus. Primary target.

“Careful, Antrecht!”

Another voice, originating from previously unnoticed individual in the shadows. Voice heavily garbled by use of vocal synthesizer and thus not clearly identifiable as male or female .

“The shackles should restrain it yet a while longer, and the drugs are still working. But considering its accelerated metabolism, I’d prefer it if you had your conversation while we are still safe.”

Shape and posture of individual suggest extensive bionic augmentation. Red cloak suggests affiliation with Mechanicus cult. Subject identified with a probability of 76.6% as Magos Explorator Hiram Zeiss, reported M.I.A during mission on Varunth Minoris. Secondary target. Estimated distance to primary target: two steps. Estimated time of battle until termination of vital functions: three seconds. From there, distance to secondary target: one step. Estimated time until termination of vital functions: four seconds.

“I know what you are thinking”

The primary target.

“Let me assure you, your estimations are, shall we say, a little optimistic. But you are free to try, of course.”

Another attempt at escape. Restrains prove unyielding again. No possible way of reaching primary target at this time. Conserve strength. Try again later.

“Well, there really is no talking to you, is there?” Aside to secondary target: “Hiram, would you be so kind? I suppose I should enjoy this conversation more it if our guest were somewhat less…single minded.”

Secondary target seems to be manipulating a console. Pressing buttons. Result unkn…

…To begin with, pain. Lances of white hot lightning, piercing to the core.

“What you are feeling right now is the removal of certain…substances from your bloodstream. Since your organism has been attuned to these substances for Throne knows how long, you may find the resulting sensations to be somewhat disagreeable. Naturally, our good Magos Zeiss assures me that he has taken ample preparations to steel you against the more …debilitating physical effects of your deprivation. “

And then, beyond the pain, something far worse. Something like an echo in the back of the head…

“There are some things, however, that we cannot spare you.” A pause. “ It appears that you are now suffering from the early symptoms of a most vicious disease. We call it ‘sense of self’.”

Darkness.

Awake again. Antrecht is in the room. Straining to understand his words. There is so much pain. And things far worse. Nooks and crannies where there used to be only the surface of a lake, undisturbed and pristine. But no longer.

“Let me explain to you how this matter will be resolved. I shall pose you a question. I shall give you a gift. I shall make you an offer. And then, everything else.

But first, the question.” Antrecht’s face is now entirely without humour. “The question is: Why?”

What does he mean? What does he want? It is growing more and more difficult to hold his gaze. If he would only say something. But he is just sitting there…

…sitting there looking.

Looking at…

…me

Darkness

Awake again.
“Back to the question at hand.” Antrecht again: “Why all of this? Why want me dead?” He comes closer, gazing at me once again, unrelenting. “Not why your masters want me dead, mind you. I know that. Why do you want me dead…Operative Sigma? What do you stand to gain from this?”

What… do I

I…?

Darkness

“I promised you a gift, Operative Sigma, and you shall have it.” A smile. “I shall give you the most valuable thing in this galaxy. I shall give you a choice.”

The sound of the shackles springing open is very loud.

After a seemingly endless moment, Antrecht smiles:

“Very well then. Shall we talk about the offer I mentioned?”

So, that's about it. Let me know what you think!

I really like the assassin's fluff, very well written. I think the miniature looks a bit like it is missing a neck though. Looking forward to the chrono-gladiator especially, I made a similar conversion to that as a test miniature - inspired by JRN's Imperial Mutant.

Thanks guys!

About the neck: Damn, and I already used the skull with the most pronounced neck portion. Oh well, you can't win them all

Bruticus, you're in luck: I'll be taking a look at the Chrono-gladiator next! Just be patient for a little longer

Oh, and it goes without saying that JRN is one of my main inspirations! Did you see his new Thaddeus Velk model? It's so fantastic I'd like to eat it Although PDH's new Inquisitrix is equally fantastic, to be sure!

Welcome aboard, brother!

Dude, go download that PDF right away! I can't tell you how much working on Inquisitor models at the 28mm scale has impacted my character creation process for my World Eaters! You'll never look at your models as mere playing pieces again. Which, come to think about it, seems to be an especially good idea in your case, seeing as you don't play in the first place

But seriously, I was loving the background for years, but the different scale kept me away, until I stumbled upon Molotov's work. Simply exploring all those glorious archetypes at the 28mm scale is just so much fun! You can use all the strange bitz that won't fit into your regular army. You can teach yourself all kinds of crazy tricks, knowing that the models are one-offs. Plus you get to look at lots of fantastic stuff from the likes of Molotov, PDH, JRN and migsula.

I don't know yet if I'll ever play a single game of Inquisitor, but it's totally worth it for the creative process alone...

...

...guess I can understand how you feel about 40k now

It's very kind of you to say so! Not being a native speaker, I really wasn't sure if the story got the point across. Glad to hear it apparently did

@tipios: Thanks, mate!

@Biohazard: I imagine you'll find that building an Inquisitor model every now and then is very relaxing comparing to kitbashing Titans the size of houses Building those warband members is really something you can do between projects to keep yourself amused. I don't know about you, but for all my love for the World Eaters, there are simply days when the sight of power armoured models just makes me scream

Hey guys,

just wanted to show you something I am working on atm. I've been thinking of this conversion for quite a while now, so I swung by the FLGS yesterday to buy another plastic Nurgle Lord. Here's what he's turned into:

It's quite obvious that the model's nowhere near finished, but I guess you can see where I am headed with this. I wanted two twist brothers, one huge and dumb, the other one smart and tiny, commanding his brother from atop his back. This one was basically inspired by a certain movie ("Two Men enter...") and by an end boss in the old "Jedi Knight" game. And by a couple of bitz from the Ogre Kingdoms -- in the end, everything just fell into place.

The basic outline for the model is pretty much complete at this point. but I imagine that I'll be adding lots of stuff to give it the certain "je-ne-sais-quoi"

Your suggestions are very welcome, of course!

Very true, Bruticus. Unfortunately, GW's designers made it so that the little guy only fits into that basket in one particular angle. And on top of that, it'll be quite a job already to have him look the same way he's pointing But I'll probably get it to work somehow...

Automatically Appended Next Post:
One more small update before I turn in for the night

Just couldn't keep my hands still, so I worked on the twist brothers some more:

I didn't do that much: Just added an Ogre fist to the big guy's right arm. I quite like it, but if I keep it, it means I'll have to hollow the inside out, because there's an Ogre hand there that's upside down now

I also added the beginnings of a top hat to the smaller brother. In my opinion, that's just the kind of detail that ends up giving the model a demented kind of charm

Let me know what you think!

You could probably cut the arm at the shoulder and reposition it then rebuild the shoulder with GS without too much trouble I'd have thought, plus shoulders can always get disguised with pads. It also looks cool as it is, like he can't get Blaster to listen to him.

I love the ogre fist on Orc arm, balances the model well and just looks cool. The top hat idea is good too, maybe shorten it a bit and make it look a bit more beaten up?

Bruticus wrote:It also looks cool as it is, like he can't get Blaster to listen to him.

My thoughts exactly! It's a coincidence that it looks that way, of course, but I like the impression that he has to scream at his brother to get through to him

I'll do more work on the top hat as soon as the GS has cured. Yesterday evening, I was just too afraid I would completely screw it up

That's the way to kit-bash!

The design of the brothers is great so far. What I especially like to ponder is the chemistry between them from the perspective of gameplay. Is the big one so stubborn that he'll randomly obey his little brother's commands? What happens if the other one dies, does the one still living go frenzy? etc.

There are so many ways to make them interesting! okkiW is also designing similar characters for our Inq28 scenario, only they are Siamese twins of sort.

KrautScientist's INQ28: Kill Team Ulrach finished! @ 2012/05/27 11:02:03

Post by: KrautScientist

Thanks izeColt!

I usuallly don't get excited about rules at all, but you're right: In this case, there are some interesting possibilities: Maybe the smaller brother doesn't always get through to the bigger one. Maybe the bigger one is easily distracted, or scared of certain noises or what have you. I think it could be fun to have a character that's very powerful but can be distracted or immobilised by clever playing. That said, the concept of a smaller and a bigger character is quite interesting to explore from a visual perspective as well. I first got the idea when I found that "basket" for the Gnoblar model in my bitzbox and was instantly intrigued It's also a concept that would probably be much harder to pull off in 56mm!

I already saw okkiW's concept, of course. That sketch alone is so good that it really makes me thrilled for what he is doing with the concept. Makes it a close second to your Inquisitor

Post by: KrautScientist

Another small update on the brothers: I tried a different weapon on the bigger brother's right arm in order to see if I would like it better than the gauntlet and added an ammo feed to his weapon. I also gave him a respirator over the lower half of his face (ignore the dangling canister, as it can easily be cut away). Take a look at the changes:

None of these changes are permanent yet. So, what do you think: gauntlet or club? Resirator or no respirator?

I also laid out all the different bitz I may yet be using on the model:

If anyone has another idea, let me know!

KrautScientist's INQ28: Kill Team Ulrach finished! @ 2012/05/28 17:46:53

Post by: tipios

Nice additions. Although I do prefer the orignal gauntlet, and I'm a no for the respiator!

KrautScientist's INQ28: Kill Team Ulrach finished! @ 2012/05/28 17:49:12

Post by: KrautScientist

Thanks, tipios!

Actually, I think I'll go back to the gauntlet -- it just seems to make more sense for the character. Like I said, I'll also add more cabling: The cables you can see in the third picture will be added to his weapon arm, running from the weapon to his back or something like that. I will also add one or two of the electrical coils, probably to his shoulderpad.

Still not sure about the respirator, though. Maybe I'll just have to wait until I painted the face and re-evaluate the whole thing then. I think the respirator helps in "40kifying" the model, but it takes away a lot of expression. But it's only a small bit, so I can still add it when I don't like the painted face

Another question: Do you think the smaller brother should get some kind of weapon (a Laspistol in his left hand, for example)? Or should he be entirely defenseless withouth his brother?

KrautScientist's INQ28: Kill Team Ulrach finished! @ 2012/05/28 18:02:02

Pipes idea sounds perfect. If you give gun to little brother, I think it will lose a lot of character.

big guantlet is an awesome weapon choice. I third for no weapon for the little brother. as for the respirator i think it should be hanging off of his pack that the little guy can slap over the bigguns face. just my nickle for the day.

Post by: KrautScientist

Thanks, guys. I guess the smaller brother will have to go weaponless then

While I am still working on those two, let's have a look at another finished model in the meantime:

The Chrono-gladiator is yet another archetype oozing the kind of gothic science fiction horror that defines the setting of 40k and Inquisitor. There’s just something inherently wrong and sickening about a creature only able to prolong its life by fighting and killing. So it was clear that I would have to build one of those guys as a part of my INQ28 exploits.

Fortunately, the Chrono-gladiator was once again a nice fit for Inquisitor Antrecht’s retinue, because even someone like Antrecht, who prefers working from the shadows, will sometimes have to employ a more direct approach or face one of his many pursuers in combat. It makes a lot of sense that he would choose to use servants that are not too bothered about his methods. And his alliance with Magos Zeiss should make it easy enough to keep all kinds of biomechanic abominations in working order. So with the consideration of plausibility safely out of the way, I once again started cutting and glueing:

All things considered, this guy was one of the easiest conversions in the retinue. I used the body of an old Ork boy I had built ages ago, replacing the hands with two crude chainblades from the same kit. There’s just something about those primitive Ork weapons. Hmmm…
The left arm had some bandages at the wrist which were a perfect fit for the crude implant, while I masked the left wrist with a very old shield that came from Advanced HeroQuest. It does manage to add a little bit of “Blanchian” madness to the piece, I think.

The head is from the ever useful Crypt Ghoul kit. The fact that it’s much too small for the muscular body makes the model look misshapen and malproportioned, like he turned the steroid use up to eleven, which, come to think about it, is probably exactly what happened.
I added a shaved down CSM backpack and a small tube running into the model’s neck to represent the mechanisms injecting drugs into the gladiator’s system during fights.
All that was left were some bits and bobs. I added a purity seal as well as a Mechanicus seal to the model. And of course an hourglass that he uses to keep track of the time he managed to “save up”. And with that, the model was ready for painting:

Looking back on it now, I was kind of ambitious with the paintjob, trying all kinds of new things. First of all, this was the first model where I managed to figure out a working recipe for pale, somewhat sickly skin: Paint it GW Dheneb Stone, the wash liberally with GW Ogryn Flesh. Done! Fortunately for me, I managed to load up on Ogryn Flesh before the new paints were released. Phew!

I also tried to paint some blue veins on the model’s skin, trying to make it look like the skin was slightly translucent (like real human skin). It worked out rather nicely, I think. You can see the effect on his arms and neck.

His clothes were mainly painted in muted browns and greens, so they would offer a nice contrast to the skin but not draw too much attention away from the more interesting points of the model. I used the shield on the right arm and the purity seal to add some accents in red.

And finally, I tried adding lots of scratches to the model’s chainblades, making it look like he has been using them to parry lots of attacks. By washing with Badab Black between applying the different “layers” of scratches, I tried to make it look like some of them were more recent than others.

All in all, I’m rather pleased with the model. He’s certainly not a main player in the warband, but I used him to try all kinds of things that were fairly new — at least to me. I also wrote up a small piece of background just now in order to get a feeling for how he and Antrecht could have crossed ways for the first time.

Chrono-gladiator Klytus

The main tenet of the Istvaanian creed is that it is unending conflict alone that allows the Imperium to prosper. What better embodiment for this philosophy, then, than a creature that can only prolong its existence by fighting?

Inquisitor Antrecht first saw the being called Klytus in the slave pits of St. Sabasto’s Reach, fighting for his life in more ways than one: The Chrono-gladiator’s internal clock was just about to run out, leaving him with only seconds to live, and so he tore through his opponents with wild abandon, desperate to prolong his existence. Then, as a cruel kind of recurring spectacle, the ringmaster would reset his clock after each fight, keeping him suspended in a stasis field until the next time, repeating a cycle of desperation and slaughter over and over again. Antrecht was disgusted and fascinated in equal measures.

When Antrecht’s investigations revealed the planet’s Circus Imperialis to be a front for a cult of daemon-worshippers, the ringmaster sicced Klytus on the Inquisitor, promising him to end the vicious cycle if he managed to take Antrecht down. It turned out however, that he had misjudged the gladiator’s will to live after all, for it was him that Klytus turned on instead. He had been a plaything far too long, and if he had to die, he would at least take a dangerous heretic with him.

As Klytus lay dying, Antrecht intervened, for he hated to let a useful asset go to waste. Magos Zeiss managed to keep the Chrono-gladiator alive and he became a member of Antrecht’s warband. From now on, the time he won in battle would be his to keep.

The long years of chemical treatment and crude surgery have all but erased the man Klytus may once have been. The real or imagined transgression that originally led to his fall into slavery and to his transformation has been lost forever in the mists of the past. All that is certain is that his body is now disfigured and misshapen, useful only as a tool for killing. And whatever remains of his mind is impossible to guess, for he is taciturn and solitary when off the battlefield, his frenzy and brutality snuffed out. However, Lazarus Antrecht has begun to suspect that something of the man may yet be left inside the beast, and he sees Klytus as a handy tool as well as an entertaining continued experiment…

C&C always welcome!

Great model, KS! He still looks a little orky and I was worried when I saw the WiPs, but your paintjob really seems to have carried it - like you say, the tiny head works in his favour to show off his ridiculous musculature! I think his skin works really well, too. I love dheneb stone for skin - absolutely gutted that mines almost empty and they've discontinued it

Chrono-gladiators seem like they'd be a lot of fun to play in =I=. Kind of take-no-prisoners, feral assault for when diplomacy has failed. A useful asset to have, and you've done well characterising him too - love the hint of intrigue in that final sentence.

Your warband is really coming together, keep it up! Looking forward to seeing what you do next

@megabambam: I am quite honoured that my thread managed to overcome your "lurkyness". Concerning the Mandalorian, I haven't really played a game of Inquisitor yet, so I also haven't planned the weapons loadout on my models. That said, the Mandalorian would probably get a collection of grenades (since he is holding some) as well as a fancy sidearm: Maybe a needle pistol with different toxic ammo. Or a Bolt pistol with a selection of different ammunition. He really is a professional, so that should probably be reflected in his armament. I am always open to suggestions from people more rules-savy than me, of course

@Scarper: To tell you the truth, I was kinda surprised that the Chrono-gladiator really started to become a character in his own right when I wrote the fluff. Again, thanks for the kind words on my writing. Like I said earlier, your fluff from the "Pimp my Wizard" competition was quite a large inspiration for me, so it really means a lot

I didn't actually see that part of your comment the first time you posted! Thank you so much - I don't think I've ever really inspired someone to write before, that's a huge compliment! You're genuinely (IMHO) a really talented writer - assassins and pit slaves are detached enough that they'd be really hard to humanise, but I think you've done so incredibly well. The fact that you liked the stuff I was writing has me hugely chuffed

Your warband is really inspiring - it's fantastic to see a group with a story behind them

Thanks a lot, guys!

My next update will focus on my World Eaters (although the models I am going to showcase could easily feature in the odd game of Inquisitor as well - you'll see what I mean tomorrow). But I might get some work in on the Twist brothers during the weekend, so don't worry: I'll keep it coming

@Scarper: I don't want to overdo it, but that fluff was seriously fantastic! The bit about Easthollow collapsing and about the "fallout" resulting from it just felt so plausible and natural. I think it's always much more of an achievement to flesh out the actual world of 40k on a day to day basis instead of describing huge battle scenes with tens of thousands of participlants.

KrautScientist wrote:Another small update on the brothers: I tried a different weapon on the bigger brother's right arm in order to see if I would like it better than the gauntlet and added an ammo feed to his weapon. I also gave him a respirator over the lower half of his face (ignore the dangling canister, as it can easily be cut away). Take a look at the changes:

None of these changes are permanent yet. So, what do you think: gauntlet or club? Resirator or no respirator?

Cool conversion! And I like the "Masterblaster"-like design. Its very cool.
I would prefer the gauntlet for the right hand. And I like both versions with or without respirator.

Cheers, Logan! I'll definitely be using the gauntlet after all. It's just a much better fit for the model. I remain unsure about the respirator, so I suppose I will make that choice once I've painted the face. If it looks good enough, then no respirator. If it needs a little something, then the respirator goes on

It's actually quite easy to imbue Inquisitor models with lots of personality: Each model you complete feels like a whole squad for a regular 40k army in terms of gratification, so it's in your own best interest to really pay attention to the details Plus these guys really come alive once the model is finished, so it's also very rewarding from a fluff perspective.

I quite like the respirator but the cannister dangling needs to go. I would also use some cables or pipes maybe like the ones from the Dread legs or even some of the dread weapon arms and have them running over his shoulder or smaller hoses from his head aka Bane in the old Tim Burton Batman movie.

Sadly, it wasn't a Burton movie. Which was the whole problem, if you ask me

Alright, guys, I promised you some new pictures of the brothers. Here they are:

Like I said, I added some cabling and an ammo feed to the weapon. Oh, and an Ork sight Also hollowed out the gauntlet which was quite a bit of work. I'll have to put a suitable Ork hand there, eventually.
The smaller brother got a bit of "decoration" for his hat as well

All in all, I didn't do too much work on them, but I guess that's because there isn't that much left. With a model like this, it's easy to go a bit overboard with the details, so I guess I'll force myself to keep it simple. Just one or two additional bits, and they should be ready for painting. What do you guys think?

He looks awesome, KS! They work so well together, you've got a great dynamic between the two of them. Do you have any liquid green stuff? The thumb marks on the hat are a bit of a pet peeve of mine, and a quick coat of really watered down lgs is a great way to obliterate them Love the gun and all the cabling though - drags em kicking screaming into the 41st millenium

p.s. I love the smaller brother, he's so characterful! I've got an exact image for how he would interact with this guy. Plus the giant top hat with the new ornamentations bring this guy to mind, which makes me laugh a little

I'll also try to smooth out the hat somewhat, don't you worry

Post by: KrautScientist

Thanks guys! As a little reward after getting the modelling done on the brothers, let's lean back and take a look at a finished model, shall we?

The model I want to talk about today is easily one of my favourites in Inquisitor Antrecht’s retinue. It is also one of the simplest models with regard to its conversion and the paintjob.

Everything started when I stumbled upon QOrbin’s work here on Dakka (you can see his thread here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/236240.page ) and his own blog: He had the great idea of using the little Gnoblar models that come as extras with the various Ogre kits to build all kinds of twists and mutants for his Inquisimunda gang. An especially great model of his used one of the Gnoblars as a a basis for a Gollum-like hillbilly mutant. You can see it here:

http://q0rbinateit.blogspot.de/2011/03/bring-out-gimp.html

I was instantly fascinated by this idea! Those little Gnoblars are full of character, but they never seemed all that useful to me, not being an Ogre player and all. And even some actual Ogre players keep chucking them out because they don’t know what to do with them. But the idea of converting them into twists with the addition of just a couple of bits was sheer genius! And I even had some of them lying around, so I had to try it right away.

I wanted to build a twist serving as a spy and tracker for Antrecht. His physique would allow him to move through twist settlements and places like underhives without attracting unwanted attention, while his diminutive stature who would also make him fit into the smallest nooks and crannies. The Gnoblar model from the Ironguts kit QOrbin had used seemed to be just the right choice for that. So after a bit of cutting and glueing, the model was completed:

As you can see, the core model remains fairly unchanged. I just carved away the hammer carried by the model and replaced it with a sniper rifle, made from a Kroot rifle and some bits. I also added a Crypt Ghoul head with a respirator. I wanted to keep the strange spear jutting from the model’s backpack, but it needed some purpose. So in order to invoke a bit of the “Blanchian” style once again, I added some kind of parchment. It could be some religious writing, or perhaps Antrecht has gifted his servant with a writ as proof of his employment with the Holy Ordos of the Inquisition (or of his humanity — think Nobby Nobbs… ), so the mutant won’t be captured and carted off to a Promethium mine somewhere. I think it’s fun to add bits that are a bit ambiguous to a model. It can be interesting for the viewer to figure out what might be their purpose, and sometimes they even lead to interesting narrative elements.

The paintjob was a fairly quick affair as well: I used my tried and true combination of pale skin and muted greens and browns, contrasted by a few accents. I also used his base to elevate him a bit, so he wouldn’t look too small on the table. I rather like his paintjob, even though it was quite simple. It’s a nice example of what the judicious use of washes can achieve!

I felt the model would have to function as some kind of sniper: His frail physique should make a more combat-oriented approach fairly improbable. I also imagine he is quite good at climbing and squeezing into tight corners, so that should help his career as a sniper as well.

To add a – wait for it – little twist to the character, I wanted him to be a devout follower of the Imperial Creed. I think it’s a nice piece of irony that he would believe with all his heart in a religion that condemns him and his peers as unclean abominations and undesirables…
So, with that in mind, I sat down to write a piece of background for him:

Twist Sniper Elias Cobb

Elias Cobb was born into this world sickly and malformed, a victim of the polluted environment in the lower levels of Hive Primus on St. Sabasto’s Reach. His mother must have abandoned him out of shame, for he was found on the doorstep of the “Emperor’s Angels Orphanage” by Corwyn Helsrich, a priest looking after the orphaned children of the Hive’s Alestius sector. Helsrich was a grizzled veteran of the Imperial Guard, a hard but just man, whose time on the battlefields of the galaxy had taught him much about the best and worst mankind had to offer. He had developed the view that humanity and purity could sometimes be found in the strangest places, and so he took in the young twist child where any other priest would probably have left it to die.

In the following years, Elias was raised by the priest to be his assistant, making himself useful around the orphanage. Under Helsrich’s tutelage, he also grew to be a devout follower of the Imperial Creed, thanking the God Emperor every day for the gift of life he had been given in spite of his impurity. And thus the story of Elias Cobb could have ended with the young man eking out a simple but content existence in the lower levels of the hive. Alas, it was not to be.

Elias’ life changed when the local Church of Redemption’s acolytes burned down the orphanage and all the souls within while he was away running errands. The zealots had been watching the priest and his mutant protegé for some time, and Helsrich’s tolerance had attracted their ire. So the only life Elias had ever known went up in flames, and his chance at redemption in service to the God Emperor was seemingly lost along with it.

Inconsolable, Elias let himself drift through the underhive and became an easy prey for the slavers. He was captured and brought to the slave pits. And there, his life would have ended, if fate had not intervened yet again: Inquisitor Antrecht came upon the young twist in the underhive’s work camps and enlisted his help in exposing the slavers of the Hive’s Circus Imperialis as heretics. And once the cult was extinguished, Antrecht offered the young twist a permanent place in his retinue.

Of all of Antrecht’s henchmen, Elias Cobb is without a doubt the most unquestioningly loyal one, for he sees the Inquisitor as his saviour. He has shown great talent as a sniper and tracker and serves Antrecht with all his heart. Still a devout believer in the teachings of the Ecclesiarchy, Elias feels that his work for the Inquisition is a way of atoning for his sin of being born a mutant.

As always, thanks for looking and stay tuned for more!

"Leprechaun hat"... now that you mention it...

Anyway, I couldn't help myself, I hard to start getting some paint on the brothers today. I painted just the little one for now, though. I'll have to get some new Chaos Black spray before I can tackle the bigger brother

Here's how everything started:

That's just the base colours without any washes or accents.

Then I turned my attention to the howdah:

Just had to add that bunny...

Please excuse my dirty fingers, btw. I hit myself with the spraycan while laying down the undercoat, and even the use of nail polish remover didn't completely get rid of all the black

Here's the little brother, attached to the paint pot of doom:

A closer look at his bow tie:

And finally, in his "seat of power":

I managed to scrape off all the thumbmarks from his hat. I also rather like the somewhat coarse structure of the hat and even gave it a small highlight to show how threadbare it is

Anyway, that's the little brother. Let me know what you think!

Again, thanks a lot guys!

@ tipios: I never looked at it like that, but you're absolutely right of course! Also, I realise now that I like a certain amount of "randomness" when painting -- that's why I am using washes so much. You're never able to perfectly control the outcome, although it's usually worth it

@ Scarper: I still have some other Gnoblars, and I am quite looking forward to figuring out what to do with them Also take a look at QOrbin's thread! He's a genius with converting Gnoblars!

About the brothers: Their "WIP names" are "Lug & Tiny", but I am pretty sure I'll change their names to something a little more interesting. I need a really great family name for them, though. Something gothic and sinister and somewhat sophisticated to contrast rather nicely with their look. I'm accepting suggestions, btw

@ Q0rbin: Cheers, mate! To that I say: Cowabunga!

Alright, everyone, time for something a little different: I recently managed to get my buddy Franky on board with the whole INQ28 thing, and we've been firing background ideas back and forth at each other for a while, thinking up some possible characters for his own Inquisitor retinue. Today we sat down at the FLGS and I got him acquainted with the wonderful world of kitbashing for the first time. Franky managed to nearly take off one of his fingers with an exacto knife, so his baptism as a converter was blessed in the eyes of the Blood God Well, actually, it wasn't quite as bad as that, but you get the picture.

At the end of the day, here's what we have to show for our troubles: First up is a female assassin accompanying Franky's Inquisitrix, taking care of the more "physical" tasks. She belongs to a monastic order that is kept by the Inquisition as a training ground for assassins. Something between the normal assassin clades and the Death cults. Take a look:

As you can see, she's a fairly straight kitbash from a number of Eldar, Dark Eldar and Wood Elf bits. I added a bionic eye to add some context to the strange half-mask she's wearing. I also shaved off pretty much all the crystals and small bulges on the Eldar legs. The piece of sprue on the base is not final -- just a mockup to show the final position the model will have on the base.

We also managed a very early build of Franky's Inquisitrix, Lady Calixa Alrod:

The flagellant lower body will obviously have to go, but we wanted tol go for a robed look and acked any good alternative. If anyone has an idea for a (readily available) robed lower body, let me know! You can probably guess from this early version of the model that Inquisitrix Alrod isn't a very physical type, instead relying on espionage and her psionic talents.

Anyway, these models mark Franky's descent into the dark and wonderful world that is NQ28. Let me know what you think

looks great kraut! have you thought about using dark angel robed legs? just a thought.

that is if he wants to put his inquisitor in power armor that would look pretty cool imo. you could always putty the holes in the robes on the flagellants legs as another alternative.
either way looking forward to his inquisitor band

Inquisitrix Alrod is supposed to be pretty weak physically, so we are going for a rather slender physique to complement that fact (as well as her gender). Franky really picked something pretty difficult for his first foraging into the wilds of kitbashing, huh? A Monodominant in power armour, now that would be an easy job. But here we are, trying to build a robed female. Awesome

well you could always use the base of an actual inquisitor like so: http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat1140003&prodId=prod1140024a if he wanted to do power armour also. or even steal a SOB.

the other option i can think of but its not a very good model is a sister dialouges: http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat660004a&prodId=prod1300014a would have to rework the arms and get rid of that big banner on her chest but it could be done. again my thoughts on the subject please feel free to ignore

Getting an actual Inquisitor is out. We don't want to make this too easy on ourselves, do we? If I were to base the conversion on an actual metal model, I would probably use the Sororitas Sister Hospilitar (not sure about the English name, but it's an actual GW model). But we want this to be a plastic conversion, if at all possible.

I have already considered using the (lower) body from an WFB Empire or High Elf mage, but we would have to buy a whole kit for that. And while I am not at all opposed to buying kits just for the bits, I have this perverse urge to finish this conversion without spending any money

How about the legs from the Dark elf warriors? Would those be too small? I had a full 2000pt army of DE years ago and the legs an torso were seperate then not too sure if that is still the case but Im sure you can pick them up easily enough. The assassin is looking good so far.

@Biohazard: Funny you should say that, since my buddy actually is a Dark Elves player: That's where the Inquisitrix' torso is from. However, I somehow fear that Dark Elf legs would end up looking too brutal with their chainmal.

I realise I am acting like a 13 year old girl, refusing all your ideas, guys. Sorry for that! I don't know, I am just waiting for an idea to really click with me...

Yes, also promising. It would also have to be bought, however. If we buy anything for this project, it's really a neck and neck between the High Elf Mage and Emperor Wizard kits. Bot of them have their pros and cons: The High Elf Mage works better for a woman, while the Empire Wizard has more cool stuff for more Inquisitor models. But like I said, I'll have another look at what can be done to the flagellant legs before spending any money

Thanks a lot, buddy, your help is appreciated

Your kit choices are logical, the Elf would work great.. but i completly agree that there are just so many cool bits in the empire kit, that i would choose that.. i mean do you know how badass the mask head looks when you cut off the "beard"?!

on second thought, looking at one of my wizards, the body might work, without the external robe its fairly thin, although it does sort of sway to the side of the feet, so its not exactly straight down

First of all, thanks a lot guys! Some great ideas there! I'll have to look carefully at each of them to find one that works. I'll rather take it slow, though. This is Frank's Inquisitrix, the center of his warband, so it won't do to just hurry things along. I'll keep you updated with the progress, of course:

@ HF Izanagi: Cheers, mate! The bionic eye was cut off a pair of binoculars that came with the Cadian Command Squad kit, IIRC. It's the part where the binoculars are held to the eyes. It was also quite a fiddly job to glue it onto the model's face

I guess you're referring to the Inquisitor Rulebook, right? It can be downloaded from GW's homepage here:

http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/article.jsp?catId=cat480007a&categoryId=6700005a§ion=&aId=21500020a[/url]

Take note that there's no INQ28 Rulebook per se: It's just the regular 54mm Inquisitor scaled down to fit the 28mm scale.

You should also take a look at these links if you're interested in getting things started:

http://inq28.blogspot.de/

http://www.the-conclave.co.uk/

It also pays to look at the awesome INQ28 threads here on Dakka: PDH's, migsula's and Baiyuan's, to name just a few.

Hope that helps to get you infected with the INQ28 bug

That's a nice idea, fatty! I am kind of hesitant to undertake serious GS work, not being very good at it, but the DE sorceress may be an interesting option to look at. Hmmm...

In the meantime, why don't we take a look at something that's actually finished, eh?

The Arco-flagellant is yet another character archetype that makes Inquisitor the dark and gothic masterpiece it is. Those guys got their first day in the limelight when Inquisitor was released, and they manage to embody much of what is wrong with organised religion in the 40k universe.

The process of Arco-flagellation is used to turn heretics into horrible weapons that can be wielded by the Ecclesiarchy. Use of an Archo-flagellant may also be granted to certain Inquisitors: a perfect excuse to have one or more of them in an Inquisitor warband!
What’s interesting about them is not only the fact that they probably pack quite a punch on the table, but also the hidden tragedy behind these creatures. Granted, Arco-flagellants certainly aren’t the leading roles in the shadow war for the Emperor’s soul, but with a bit of creativity, it’s quite easy to imagine suitably tragic and/or horrible stories to describe their fall from grace and their subsequent transformation into living weapons.

So it was clear to me that I needed to build one or more of them! All the more so since the official models are unfortunately quite horrible. Take a look.

http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/File:Acro_Flagelent_Squad.gif#.T-2KOsXTTyJ

So I once again turned to the Crypt Ghoul kit for a suitably twisted and tortured look. Here’s what I came up with:

The first model I built was once again inspired by Phil Kelly’s Inquisitor Lichtenstein warband: His Arco-flagellant Gryx uses an Ork power claw (from Ghazkull Thraka, no less!) which ended up looking very cool. So I tried the same at the 28mm scale. Apart from that, I added some mechanical doodads to show the “augmentations” the Arco-flagellant had received. The back of the Crypt Ghoul body also sported a nice, sharpened stake and some chains punched through the skin. I kept both, since it looked like they could have been part of the poor individual’s “punishment”. When painting the model, I took care to make the skin look extra pale and clammy. Looking back at it now, I will probably have to go back to touch up the vial supposed to be containing stimulants on the model’s left shoulder at some point, since I am not perfectly happy with the colour there. But apart from that, I was reasonably pleased with my first Arco-flagellant. All that was missing was a suitably dark piece of background for him…

Arco-flagellant “Enoch 451″

In the long years of his career, Inquisitor Antrecht has been forced to use rather “unconventional” means more than once. So it is no wonder that his work would attract the attention of the Ordo Hereticus’ more puritan members sooner rather than later. Consequently, Antrecht has had to deal with the Ordo’s scrutiny on more than one occasion, but few of these confrontations have been as monumental and – ultimately – tragic as that with Inquisitor Ferrante.

During his long fight against the heretic Amnon Helix, Antrecht was forced to use some extreme measures, which earned him Ferrante’s scorn. The Witch Hunter declared his intention of bringing Antrecht in for strict questioning, but his quarry managed to elude him time and time again. Ferrante was man driven by the fires of fanaticism, however, and when he could not apprehend Antrecht, he turned his attention to those close to him instead. Towards this end, he managed to capture Antrecht’s Interrogator, Hamlin Rheden, laying an inescapable trap for the Inquisitor, for he knew Antrecht would try to free his disciple.

He had been right: Antrecht came out of hiding in a desperate bid to free Rheden, only to be confronted by Ferrante and his henchmen. Little is known of the two Inquisitors’ confrontation, but it marked the last the galaxy had ever seen of Witch Hunter Ferrante, leading some to suspect that Antrecht may have had a hand in the Inquisitor’s disappearance (or even his death) and earning him the undying enmity of Ferrante’s own pupil, Holm Fiegmund — a situation that would, in time, have its own dire ramifications.

Ever since Antrecht’s confrontation with the Witch Hunter, an Arco-flagellant designated “Enoch 451″ has been a member of the Inquisitor’s retinue. Beyond that, nothing is known with any degree of certainty.

Enoch’s trigger word is “Discipulus”

Well, the first model was finished, but I couldn’t really stop at one, could I? So I built another Arco-flagellant, trying to improve on different aspects by using what I had learned while building Enoch 451: I wanted the model to be a little more dynamic. And I wanted to use a somewhat different head, so the model would look different enough from Enoch.

Fortunately, this one is a bit better documented. Here’s a work in progress on my second Arco-flagellant:

Once again, a Crypt Ghoul body formed the base for the conversion, although this time I shaved off the quills and spikes emerging from the model’s back, replacing them with two electric coils to indicate that there’s some kind of generator powering the flagellant. His right arm was replaced with a Sentinel chainsaw, while I used a flail from the WFB Empire flagellant kit on his left arm to represent an electro-flail. I also added a couple of screws on his back to show where crude surgery had been performed on him in order to suitably “modify” his body. His head is a normal skull from the old Skeleton warriors, although I added a bionic eye that was built from some leftover bits and bobs.

Regarding his base, I had to elevate him a bit to prevent the chainsaw from touching the ground. I achieves this by using cork and the base of one of the energy generators that came with the “Battle for Maccrage” box set.

Concerning the paintjob, I’d like to highlight my method this time. It’s certainly nothing spectacular, but it will probably show you how a very basic paintjob may be transformed by the judicious use of washes.

I started by painting him in the basic colours I wanted. Take a look:

I have to be honest with you: At this stage, I was extremely nervous because of how horrible the model looked. But then came the application of washes: Ogryn Flesh for the skin, Badab Black for the metal parts and Devlan Mud for…well, pretty much everything. After about an hour of waiting and some careful touchups here and there, here’s what he looked like:

Quite a transformation, don’t you think? Granted, this way of painting is not going to win me any prizes, but it’s a fairly quick, effective and, most importantly, fun way of getting your models finished before you get bored. You also don’t need to take my word for it either: This way of painting is championed by much more talented people than me, for example by Steve Buddle, who even explained it in some depth in a Blanchitsu WD-article some time ago.

Concerning the model’s name and background, I decided to name the Arco-flagellant “Molotov XXVIII”, as a small nod to Commissar Molotov, who is a very talented modeller in his own right and a tireless advocate of Inquisitor played at the 28mm scale. A heartfelt, albeit strange and twisted way of saying thank you, admittedly – but of course a perfect fit for the equally strange and twisted 40k universe. So, cheers mate!

Arco-flagellant “Molotov XXVIII”

The man who should become the being called “Molotov XXVIII” was a devout believer in the Imperial Creed and a lay preacher on the Shrine World of Tabeathah. His piety managed to attract quite a large number of followers, inspiring hope and religious fervour in those who came to listen to him. This rankled the Cardinals of Tabeatha greatly, however, for they only allowed their own version of the Imperial truth and feared the growing popularity of the preacher’s teachings. So the man was abducted under cover of night and subjected to arduous torture in an attempt to make him confess to being a sinner and a heretic. But the faith was strong in him, and he could not be broken. It took the punishment of arco-flagellation to wipe his mind clean and end his existence as a human being. Instead, he was turned into a mindless killing machine and left in the dungeons of the great Vetranio Cathedral to wither away or be used in some religious war.

But his captors had been ill advised, for the loss of such a prominent figure incited a religious frenzy in the believers, and they stormed the cathedral, killing the Cardinals who had taken their leader from them. When Inquisitor Antrecht arrived on Tabeatha in the wake of the violent uprising, in order to investigate whether the Cardinals had been influenced by the ruinous powers, he found the lone Arco-flagellant in the catacombs beneath the sacked cathedral and took him along when he left the world. Through a twist of fate, Molotov XXVIII would be allowed to do the Emperor’s work once more…

Molotov XXVIII’s trigger word is “Advocator”

And with that, I have managed to show you all of Antrecht’s henchmen, except one: His Servo-skull Mercutio, actually the first model I built for Antrecht’s retinue:

It’s just the Servo-skull from the Cadian Command Squad, glued to its own base. I also have no background for the little guy, although, knowing Antrecht, there is probably some dark and disturbing backstory of some sort. But that, as they say, is a story for another time.

With Inquisitor Antrecht’s retinue completely presented, my future INQ28 posts will turn towards some other individuals, but fear not: Antrecht will still make an appearance from time to time. So look forward to all the strange and demented Inquisitor characters waiting on my workbench…

Until then, as always, thanks for looking and stay tuned for more!

@ Dark Apostle 666: Cheers, mate! Looking forward to seeing your INQ28 projects

My hobby time has mainly been divided between trying to cram all the new 6th edition rules into my head and working on my Traitor Guard allies recently, but that doesn't mean that there's no time for a little INQ28 on the side

Here's a model I am working on at the moment. There's zero background in place as of yet, it's just a fun project:

The conversion uses an AOBR Ork boss that was a giveaway in WD when the 5th edition came out. I've always wanted to do something with him, but it never quite worked out until I discovered one of PDH's Scavies and simply stole the idea This particular ghoul head is just a perfect fit to create some dumb muscle I also added an old plastic Goliath's gun and an Ogre club, and my mutant bruiser was finished.

Started painting him already, although he's nowhere near finished. Here's where he's at:

As you can see, there are a lot of unfinished areas, but he's coming along rather nicely I think. As always, a great distraction whenever I am bored by other hobby activities

More news on the INQ28 front soon!

Thanks a lot, lone dirty dog, I am truly flattered

As for tutorials, I can hardly believe that I should have any techniques worth emulating -- most of my tricks when painting have been shamelessly stolen from better painters than me If there's really a demand for some specific kind of tutorial, let me know, though

Alright, people, it's been a little while, but today I've got something to show you:Meet Inquisitor Erasmus Gotthardt.

I am always easily drawn towards certain visual archetypes. One that really fascinated me while browsing through the Inquisitor rulebook was that of Inquisitor Tyrus: A massive, implacable man, quite intimidating and possibly terrifying to behold, as he is slowly advancing towards his quarry. So in a way, Inquisitor Gotthardt started out as a way of building a character similar to Tyrus at the 28mm scale.

Here’s the result:

I started with an AOBR Terminator to make the model look suitably massive. However, I didn’t want him to be wearing a standard Terminator armour, so I added a couple of bits to individualise the armour: The shoulderpads are armour plates from the Ork boyz kit, while his chestplate came from a Chaos Space Marine. I also added scrolls and decorations to make him look more like an Inquisitor and less like a Marine sergeant. The head is from a WFB Empire flagellant.

Regarding the paintjob, I went for the classic “Inquisitorial” colours of gold and crimson for a rather regal look. I have to be honest with you, though: That meant I could also use the Inquisitor as a test piece of sorts for the colour scheme I wanted to use for a small Custodes project. Oh, and I decided to paint his energy mace in light blue to make it pop more.

All in all, Inquisitor Gotthardt is quite an imposing figure. One thing that’s important to note though is that he is not actually supposed to be wearing Terminator armour! He may be based on an AOBR Termie, but I wanted his armour to look if it was more of a special design. If I ever were to do an INQ28 Space Marine, it would be a truescale version, so he would look just as big as, if not a little bigger than Gotthardt. So the armour is really supposed to be some “regular” power armour, pretty much like the one Tyrus is wearing. Maybe it’s even only partial power armour. I really only build him that way for looks, not because I wanted him to be invincible during games.

As for the character’s background, I already mentioned that, while working on the model, I hwas thinking of Gotthardt as some kind of Tyrus-expy: A bombastic, narrowminded Monodominant, strict in his rejection of what he considers to be Heresy (i.e. pretty much everything). However, as I began to think about the various possible members of his retinue, Inquisitor Gotthardt’s character somehow slowly began to transform. I now see him as more of a “good guy” (insofar as that category can even be applied to Inquisitors at all): fair and straightforward, if a little orthodox in his philosophy. But at the same time, he is a tortured man, full of insecurity over his old friend Antrecht’s seeming betrayal and torn between what he believes is right and what Antrecht has told him during their various confrontations (Fear not however, the role of pompous, insane Monodominant will be filled by somebody else — I have a plan!).

So with this gradual shift of his character in mind, I sat down to write a short piece of background for Inquisitor Gotthardt:

Inquisitor Erasmus Gotthardt, Ordo Hereticus (formerly of the Ordo Malleus)

Inquisitor Erasmus Gotthardt is a man torn. Torn between old loyalties and his beliefs. Torn between what he has been told and what he believes to be right.

Once he was one of Inquisitor Antrecht’s closest friends, and both of them worked tirelessly to smite the daemon wherever it was found. Many were their exploits in the service of the Ordo Malleus, and their friendship endured through all the hardships they had to face during their arduous work.

The two of them went separate ways when Antrecht set out on a quest to take down the notorious heretic Amnon Helix, and they did not see each other for a long time. So Gotthardt was all the more shocked when he heard the accusations leveled at Antrecht after the disappearance of Witch Hunter Ferrante. He could not believe that his friend could have fallen so far, so he sought him out in order to make him see reason.

During their confrontation, Gotthardt implored his old friend to finally come clean, to accompany him before the Conclave and deal with the accusations. Gotthardt felt that they were beginning to work out some kind of understanding, but then the rash and fanatic Inquisitor Fiegmund, an erstwhile pupil of Ferrante, interrupted their discussion and tried to apprehend Antrecht by force. In the ensuing three-way fight, Ferrante was attacked and horribly maimed by Antrecht’s Daemonhost, while the Inquisitor managed to get away. Afterwards, the Inquisitorial Conclave at Pervatia Secundus addressed the question of how best to stop Antrecht. Inquisitor Gotthardt was thorougly examined and interrogated due to his connections to the fugitive and the grievous injuries dealt to another member of the Holy Ordos, and there were those who suspected that he was Antrecht’s accomplice in the matter. Riddled with doubt over what he had witnessed and weakened by his long interrogations, Gotthardt adressed the Conclave:

“You may keep arguing about whether there is any method to Lazarus Antrecht’s madness. You may keep searching for a name to give to his philosophy: Call it Istvaanianism or Antrechtism or call it by its true names: Madness. Heresy. That is the only classification I need. And though I may weep for the friend I lost, I must not waver in my task. For he whom I knew is dead and gone, and the last service that I may do him is to run down and take out the monster that he has become.”

As always, thanks for looking and stay tuned for more!

Thanks a lot, guys!

@ Doombiscuit: I don't know the name of the gun, but it's an unconverted Grey Knights weapon, from the GK Terminators, I believe (although the power armoured GK come with a smaller version as well).

Alright, time for an update, people:

with Inquisitor Antrecht’s retinue so thoroughly documented, let us turn to my other INQ28 models, of which there are currently about 30 in different states of completion. Some of them are pretty much complete, some are early sketches, still others are simply useful 40k models that I managed to pick up (from cousin Andy’s extensive collection, in more than one case). I’d like to showcase these models in a series of posts to show you where my different Inquisitor projects are headed. I also encourage you to let me know your ideas and criticism! Many of these models are nowhere near finished, and they can only get better with your help. So let’s get this show on the road!

In today’s post, we’ll take a look at a number of models I built (or am still building) for the retinue of Inquisitor Gotthardt. You’ll notice straight away that, compared to Inquisitor Antrecht’s freakshow of a warband, Gotthardt’s followers are a lot less extreme. Nevertheless, I am trying to make them interesting and rounded characters.

First up is Rogue Trader Iskander Gagarin, in Gotthardt’s service ever since the Inquisitor convicted him of smuggling Xenos contraband and made him an offer he could not refuse:

With this model, I tried to partly channel the look of Rogue Trader von Castellan from the Inquisitor rulebook. I like the idea that rogue traders are pretty much naval merchants on speed, sporting a wild mix of gaudy dress uniforms and more exoctic features, so that’s what I tried to achieve with Gagarin: I used a Cadian officer’s torso and right arm with the left arm and legs coming from an old WFB Empire cannon kit. The head is a Space Wolf scout’s, while the flashy fur cloak is from the WFB Empire Knights. To represent Gagarin’s dealings with Xenos cultures, I gave him a shuriken pistol from an old Eldar CC weapons sprue and a Dark Eldar knife on his belt. He is also carrying his family’s heirloom sword (again from the Empire Knights). All in all, I am rather pleased with the overall effect. He looks suitably swanky, with just a bit of a swashbuckling vibe. I’ll probably go for a pretty loud paintjob, in order to make him look like a 19th century military officer turned up to eleven.

Next in line is a character that I intended to be the very opposite of Gagarin: Captain Esteban Revas, former regimental champion of the 126th Haaruthian Dragoons, who was dishonoured in the eyes of his regiment, his family and his homeworld for the crime of actually doing an honourable deed (go figure! ):

I wanted to build a model that was clearly recognisable as a (former) member of the Imperial Guard. I also wanted the model’s pose to be full of confidence, even arrogance, to underline his military upper-class background. Again, I used a mix of Cadian parts and bits from WFB Empire kits. Revas is supposed to be an accomplished fencer and duelist, so I gave him a weapon (and some absurdly ornate equipment — check out his helmet!) to match this effect. Though I used components very similar to Gagarin’s, the resulting model looks very different, and the dynamic between the two characters should be fairly interesting in the background as well.

While Gagarin’s and Revas’ characters and respective background are pretty far along, there are some additional members of the warband who haven’t yet made it beyond the modelling stage, with little or no background in place.

On of those is a drill abbot I built:

I wanted him to look like an older, world weary type who nevertheless can hold his own in battle. I used a stocky monk’s body from the Bretonnian men-at-arms, combined with a Space Wolf head, a power hammer from the power armoured Grey Knights and a couple of bits. I also gave him a lantern for good measure. All in all, the model’s a bit shorter than I would have liked, but that cannot be helped. I haven’t come up with a background for him yet, but I’ll work something out.

Then there’s this guy:

You all probably recognise the model as the shuttle pilot from the Maccrage box set. I really love this guy, so I talked cousin Andy into letting me have him. After thinking for a while about what I would actually use him for, I decided to attach him to an Inquisitorial warband as some kind of retired Arbites judge, security agent or something of the like.

Towards that end, I clipped off the case he was carrying and added a power maul (from the Dark Angels veteran kit) instead. However, I am not quite sure whether I should clip off the maul’s head or not, or replace it with something different…any ideas? I also added some gloves from the Bretonnian men-at-arms to his belt.
Apart from that, I’m pretty sure I won’t change too much about the model, since the base model is great as it is. But if there are any suggestions, let me know!

And finally, here is a character I have been toying around with for quite a while now:

A Kroot mercenary I built from some parts that had accumulated in my bitzbox. However, I always saw the Kroot as more than just a couple of flesh-eating “birdmen”. I’ve been intrigued by a number of conversions I’ve seen over the years that chose to emphasise the tribal aspect to the Kroot culture, picturing them as some kind of “noble savages” if you will. And however dated (and downright politically incorrect) that concept may be in actual literature, I think there’s little harm in applying it to a race of alien birdmen from space.

The model you see above was heavily inspired by a Kroot conversion published in the new 40k rulebook. The model throws some High-Elf (and Wood Elf) bits into the mix to add some tribal elements. However, as you can see, this guy is not finished by a long stretch, and I am also not sure whether he’ll actually end up in Gotthardt’s entourage or will rather be held back for the warband of a Xenos Inquisitor I have yet to build.

Anyway, that’s the first few character sketches currently loitering on my desk. If you have any questions, suggestions or ideas, let me know! I am looking forward to hearing from you!

In any case, as always, thanks for looking and stay tuned for more!

Great to see this project advancing. The shuttle pilot dude is fantastic. Although I myself am not too sure on the Maul... Dunno! It may grow on me eh?

Did you think about an axe of some kind for him?

I love your miniatures, you're pushing me to post my own humble contributions to the Inquisitor scene. I really love your latest miniatures, but if I can offer some constructive criticism?

The second miniature, your guardsmen, he's rocking the armored knight look, but his legs seem to un-protected. Is this intentional, otherwise you could stick the leg plates from the knight kit to his thighs which'd give him a bulkier look which'd still blend in with the gear he already has.

The hammer weilding veteran seems way too static. Compared to your other miniatures he's not really giving the vibe that you want him to. The head is perfect, the hammer, sure, why not. But why not spice up his pose slightly? If you cut off his sleeves, you could easily attach imperial guard arms for a bit more of a dynamic stance. As for the height, I've found that problem as well. I found that they seem to be closer to 'true' 28mm than heroic scale, which is a bit of a pain. My remedy is to slice off his feet altogether, and stick some larger legs on? that way he'll scale better with his head. Imperial guard boots would do fine, or the lower portion of a marauders leg braces?

I love the pilot miniature. I've never picked him up, but I really should do, it's a great figure, very resolute. My only qualm I have is shared by you in the case of his power Maul. If you have the money or the bits lying around, the forgeworld renegade enforcer kit has a lovely scaled power maul included; you could buy it from a bits store, ebay, or just take the plunge and pick up the kit. Trust me, you wouldn't regret it. Otherwise, if you snipped off the maul bit itself, it'd look similar to the shock mauls I've seen converted before, it'd just be a bit stubby.

Love the Kroot. Could be more dynamic, but it's still early days.

Good looking stuff. I still am unsure about these Empire bits used so liberally in 40k, it looks good on the flamboyant rogue trader (who is a great model, the only thing I don't like about him is the topknot, but that's a personal choice) and I can imagine him going out of his way to find some elaborate pantaloons but I just can't see it on the regimental champion yet, maybe it just needs some paint to tie it all together but it doesn't look right to me. He's wearing a carapace chestplate, a giant iron helmet and frilly leggings with a codpiece (braguette?) - just seems an odd choice, or like he has been caught in the middle of getting dressed. It would look really cool if you could continue the carapace armour plating onto his legs, and maybe 40k-ify his helmet slightly. The pose is brilliant though.

The stocky monk looks great to me, no worries about being shorter than other people - it's always a bit odd that there is so little height variation in 40k anyway! In real life - as easy as they are to overlook - short people do exist. I like including short people, fat people and women in 40k because they are the 3 groups that always get left out by GW. I think the only problem with him is that it looks like he has a skinny neck, I would try seating the head a bit lower, that might make him look like he is a bulldog of a man rather than that he is oddly proportioned. Might look better without the bell, maybe with a hand on his hip or something. Really like this guy.

The shuttle pilot to arbite conversion works well, you could give him a traditional shock maul as it is a very recognisable arbite weapon. I've seen them made out of bits of power axes and the like or you can buy them on eBay as part of the enforcer kits.

I like Kroot but I guess as he is not human it is difficult to imbue him with a sense of real personality.

Some good looking mini's mate. I have to echo the things said about the knights leggings and the maul. The power axe is usually a good fit for the Arbites maul.

Some excellent points, guys! Thanks a lot!

Let me address them model by model:

Rogue Trader:

To tell you the truth, I'm no great fan of topknots either, but the head just added such a nice contrast to his rather gaudy dress uniform and makes him look a lot less "respectable". It also resembles the original von Castellan miniature, although that's just a small bonus to me

Regimental Champion:

It was actually a very deliberate choice to equip him the way I did. You see, I wanted a blasé, even foppish, aspect to his appearance, and that is reflected in his armour and uniform: He owes his whole military position to his high birth and prowess as a fencer, so he dresses like a fairy tale knight instead of as a soldier. Now that he has lost all that, he still needs to come to terms with the fact that the days of prancing around in dress uniforms are over. Meanwhile, while he may be a bit of a dolt, he is also a truly honourable and moral person, which is the exact reason why Gotthardt recruited him and saved him from a court-martial. Anyway, I wanted all of this to be reflected in the mini, and that's why I chose this somewhat "eclectic" look

Drill abbot:

@ghosty: Actually, this guy is supposed to be more of an ecclesiarchy priest and less of an IG veteran (although he might be an IG veteran). In any case, I have to be careful to keep the overall monk look intact, so no armoured arms for him. Replacing his feet and/or shortening his neck may be worth looking at, though! Thanks for the suggestions, guys!

Arbites:

He has to have a power maul/stun baton, seeing as he's an Arbites and all However, I am really not happy with the maul yet. At this point, I'll probably either cut off the head. The rest will still look like a stun baton, and the size will be more in line with the rest of the model. Or I'll replace the head with some club from the Empire flagellant kit. Either way, that head will have to go

Kroot:

Like I say, this guy's not finished. All bets are off

@ ghosty: I'd like to see your models, mate! Go ahead and post them, it'll be alright I am also feeling flattered that I should inspire you to post your own stuff in the first place. Have a go at it!

Captain Esteban Revas - the head you have used just screams arrogance and makes the model absolutely perfect.

Really digging Gargarin and Revas. The ex-Arbite is cool too, but I have to agree the maul is a tad too large. I had this maul in mind for a Necro characater I have't gotten around to building yet, but I think it would make for a really vicious looking power maul. It's a bit more ornate than the flagellents kit.

My only criticism would be to echo what Bruticus said about Revas. He could use some leg armor, or other alterations to make him more 40k looking. Perhaps a powersword rather than the fantasy sword, and thigh/knee pads and beefing up on the boots would really add to the model in my opinion.

Thanks, Starfarer!

I actually have that Chaos Knight mace lying around! Unfortunately, it's even larger than the DA one the model has now, so it's really not an alternative

Cpt. Revas' look was really a conscious choice, as outlined above. Looks like the poor chap will have to learn about the harsh realities of the 41st millennium the hard way -- wearing a pair of tights and a codpiece

Post by: ghosty

If you're convinced with the codpiece, who are we to stop you?

I would disagree with Bruticus however, I think Kroot can have a lot of personality if you're willing to give them a bit of a tweek. I found one of the easiest ways to convey a story is positioning. Give him a more dynamic stance, bend or cut the legs at the hips and knees, and you can completely change them from their 'walking' stance. You want to give him a 'noble savage' look? I'd say get him crouching on his haunches, with possibly a big bow instead of a rifle. To give his face more personality, I found it's easiest to accentuate his face with a bit of greenstuff. I dunno how good you are with it, but if my ham fisted attempts come out looking half decent, I'm sure it'd be no problem for you Try adding a bit to his underbite, it can come out looking a lot meaner, a lot more vicious. If you add to his cheekbones and eyebrow line, it also adds a lot more character. Careful though, too much and you can make him look a teeny bit characateured.

Why don't they do that anymore? They brought back all kinds of metahumans and colourful regiments of the Guard back in the new rulebook, now would be the perfect time to follow it up with something like the old Chapter Approved stuff. Oh well...

In any case, thanks a lot for the kind words!

Alright, everyone: It's been quite a while since I updated this thread, because I've been entrenched in all kinds of 40k activities surrounding the new Dark Vengeance starter box. Check out my other threads to see what I've been up to

Anyway, time for a "real" INQ28 update: Today I'd like to talk about "Twists":

"Twists”, or mutants, are a very interesting character type in the world of Inquisitor: Considered unclean and abhorrent, twists are usually ruthlessly oppressed by the paranoid and racist Imperium of Man on the basis that their outer deformities are symptoms of an inner corruption. They are often hunted and left with no alternative but to rebel or pledge themselves to the ruinous powers if they want to live, creating a bit of a catch-22 scenario. Meanwhile, the Imperium is not above using the twists as a source for cheap labour, an oppressed underclass that is exploited as much as it is reviled.

With Inquisitor set in the shadowy parts of the Imperium, it is no small wonder that any enterprising Inquisitor should find themselves among the twisted and persecuted. And what’s more: Converting twists is an awesome way of coming up with rather interesting models. So today’s part of my Inquisitor 28 Desktop Roundup will deal with a number of twists I converted.

First up, here are two guys that I built last year, a relatively short while after getting back into the hobby. I realised that I still had some pretty old models lying around, among them a couple of old Gorkamorka Orks that I had bought some time during the 90s (as a side note: Do you remember how completely spectacular those multipart Gorkamorka plastic models seemed to us back then?). Now compared with today’s muscular, hulking Ork boys, those poor sods look pretty scrawny, so I wanted to convert them into something different. Take a look:

I replaced the original Ork boy’s left arm with an arm from the Kroot kit. It looks wonderfully twisted and vestigial (and is a great part for your mutant conversion needs). I also gave the model a Laspistol from the Cadian kit and added an old WFB Chaos Warrior’s head. All of this helped in making the model look less like a scawny Ork and more like a mutant of some sort.

This guy was even easier to convert: I just replaced his head with a face from the old Chaos mutations sprue and added a few pouches. Apart from that, the model is still the same Gorkamorka Ork I built all those years ago, although the new head really manages to transform this guy.

I painted the twists’ clothes in muted greens and browns with some weathering effects thrown in, emphasising the fact that they are a rather unkempt bunch with pretty bad equipment. Still, I quite like these two. The only thing I should have done differently is the skin: I painted these before I had found a good way of painting pale, unhealthy skin and used lots of Leviathan Purple to shade theirs — that left them looking far more pinkish than I would have liked…

When I built those guys, I wanted them to serve as mutants in my Lost and the Damned force. And while that plan never quite got off the ground, they should make quite useful NPCs and underhive scum for games of INQ28 and/or Necromunda, don’t you think?

The next model I want to show you is considerably newer. I also basically stole the idea from one of PDH’s Scavvy Mutants. I already showed you some WIP shots of this guy, but for completeness's sake:

Once again, this is a fairly easy kitbash, using just an AOBR Ork boss (that came as a giveaway with a copy of WD, back when 5th ed. was released) and a couple of bits. Chief among these is a head from the WFB Crypt Ghouls, which are simply fantastic conversion fodder for creating twists. This particular head was just a great fit, with a look between anger and idiocy that really helps to sell this guy as dumb muscle. Thanks, PDH!

I also added a hand from an old plastic Necromunda Goliath ganger, wielding a magnum style pistol, a brutal looking club from one of the WFB Ogre Kingdoms kits and added a spike to the stikkbomb, making it look more like yet another crude CC weapon.

When painting this guy, I went for a rather subdued palette once again, and added a ton of weathering effects. This time, I also got the skin right. Take a look:

I am quite pleased with this guy for a number of reasons: He really looks like a hulking brute and could be used as some kind of bodyguard or even as a mutant overlord. A fellow forumite remarked that the model looks quite a bit like a Super Mutant from Fallout 3, and even though I didn’t plan it that way, he was quite correct!

So let’s wind up our little school outing into the world of twists and mutants with another WIP model, in fact a conversion I have wanted to do for quite a while:

Among the original Inquisior releases was a character named “Quovandius”, a mutant saved by Inquisitor Eisenhorn and sworn to his service. The character also got a rather characterful model. Take a look.

However, there’s more: In his official artwork in the Inquisior rulebook, Quovandius looks far more bulky and fierce than his actual model, in my opinion. He also uses his shotgun as an improvised crutch, which I think was a really cool little idea.

Working at the 28mm scale, I would have to build a new model anyway, so why not build a twist that was inspired by that very artwork? Here’s what I came up with:

Again, I used the tried and true combination if an Ork body and a Crypt Ghoul head. Yet where the other head above looks rather nonplused, this guy looks fierce and determined, don’t you think? I also used an old Gorkamorka shotgun to emulate the artwork even further. It may not be the cleanest and most ambitious conversion in the world, but I think it gets the point across.

And while I was tempted to add all kinds of stuff in order to make the model look even more like the original Quovandius, I stopped myself, since I liked the rather simple, brutal expression of the model (I might have to add that puppet head, though. Such a cool little detail! I only have to find one that’s small enough).
Anyway, where the original Quovandius looks rather pitiful, I see this guy as more of a hunter, maybe even a bounty hunter, tolerated by the higher-ups because he can bring in anyone who has been hiding in the underhive…

And that’s it with my little showcase today. In closing, let me say that building twists is a great way to make something using leftover bitz as well as eclectic and seemingly disparate parts. Just remember to always have some Ork and Crypt Ghoul parts ready

As always, thanks for looking and stay tuned for more!

Thanks a lot, mate! That's at least one person who thinks that skin turned out alright, then

Today I'd like to show you something a bit different, that is some pieces of terrain I was working on some time ago.

I’ve been looking at different options of building some modular terrain for use in games of 40k and Inquisitor for quite some time now. After building a silly amount of cityfight terrain (that eats up an equally silly amount of storage space), I was a little hesitant to undertake the next terrain building spree: I felt that any new terrain had best be very versatile and modular for maximum usefulness. It would also have to be easily storable, so no more cathedrals for the time being…

Then, while shopping for boring stuff at the DIY-superstore, I came across these:

Now I couldn’t even tell you what these things are normally used for – especially not in English. They are used by electricians when working on electrical outlets or something — pardon my spotty knowledge when it comes to electrical installations.

But I instantly realised that these could be really useful for a terrain project: The smaller part seems immediately useful, and you may call me crazy, but the longer piece gave me an almost art deco vibe. Does that make sense?

Anyway, those were super cheap, so I picked them up and got to work:

What I wanted to try with these was to create some simple, highly versatile and modular industrial terrain that could be used for 40k but would be even more useful in games of Necromunda or Inquisitor 28. So I put each of the pieces on a base cut from foamcore and added a couple of bits:

To the small piece, I added a couple of small brass tubes I had lying around as well as some corrugated cardboard, cork chaff and one or two pieces from an old model truck. And behold, the thing was instantly transformed into something looking very …industrial.

I did something similar to the longer piece, adding some bits to give an idea of scale to the whole thing and to make it more interesting visually. Here’s the result:

All of this was really quick and easy work, and I only needed some leftover materials and a couple of bits. I then spraypainted both pieces with brown paint, since I would probably end up going for a rather dusty and dilapidated look amyway.

As usual, the uniform paint helped to tie everything toegther. I think it’s immediately obvious how this could work as a piece of terrain. Here’s a scale shot with an 28mm model:

The other piece got the same treatment. Lo and behold:

And again, with a model:

Granted, one of these alone is fairly unimpressive. But imagine several of those pieces that can be freely rearranged to create all kinds of different setups: You could simulate corridors or a kind of labyrinth. And the fun doesn’t end there: Just build a number of modular walkways to connect the different pieces and add some verticality. Or add some taller buildings for even more variety. These pieces could even be combined with my regular cityfight terrain! And the fact that they are fairly small and robust also makes them rather easy to store — what a relief!

Of course, these pieces will yet have to be properly painted, probably with huge amounts of weathering and rust. I could also add all kinds of security warnings and/or propaganda posters for more authenticity and that particular underhive look.

It probaly won’t surprise you when I tell you that I went back to the store the next day and got a whole bag of those pieces. About 8 Euros gave me enough stuff to fill up quite a lot of space on a normally sized Necromunda/INQ28 table. I’ll keep you updated on the progress!

Sometimes it’s lucky finds like these that makes building your own terrain that much fun! But then, maybe it’s just Karma’s way of paying us back for all the hours we spend sitting hunched over little plastic men. Who knows? In any case, whenever you’re at an DIY-superstore, keep your eyes open for useful stuff like this. It may make your visit to the store just that much more enjoyable ;-)

As always, thanks for looking and stay tuned for more!

Oooh ooh ooh, how about you do up the long building as a food kiosk? You could do it with the shutter over the serving bay closed so you don't have to piss about with the interior(stick a rectangle of corrugated cardboard on one long side and build a rim around it maybe?), and do it either as a really grotty "local" place with a couple of lighthearted elements(a "Soylens Viridiens Burgers - Only 1 Crown!" sign perhaps? ), or a really dull, grimy Administratum-run worker's diner sort of affair, like the one out of the Ravenor books.

@ Bruticus: I'm glad I wasn't the only one getting an art-deco vibe off these things. While I will be giving them the "rundown and dirty" treatment alright, the diner idea is just to good to pass up. And after all, even underhivers have to eat somewhere, right?

Here's a crazy idea for you all: What about trying to do a 40k version of this:

Now that I've had the idea, I cannot seem to get it out of my head...

Hmm, I actually can't get the idea out of my head now. So time permitting, I will end up doing a 40k version of Nighthawks sooner or later, I guess

Only a small update for now: I finally got around to writing a piece of background for the two twist brothers I posted some time ago:

Augustus & Cluggan Galth, Bounty Hunters extraordinaire

Who can say where the Brothers Galth truly came from? All that is certain is that they worked as overseers in the slave pits underneath St. Sabasto’s Reach’s Hive Primus when Inquisitor Antrecht investigated rumours about a chaos taint within the world’s ruling class. He encountered them in that hellish place, and while Antrecht may have made some staunch allies during his stay in the slave pits, the Brothers Galth were not among them.

Cluggan Galth was a monster, an imposing slab of muscle, as immune to physical pain as he was to pangs of conscience, yet also dim-witted and simple. His brother Augustus – malformed and diminiutive in stature, but wily and cruel nonetheless – was the one to watch out for. He had clawed his way to the top of the underhive, due to his own devious machinations as much as through leaning on his brother’s physical prowess. But he wasn’t content with his standing and nursed ambitions far above his station.

All that came to an end when the results of Antrecht’s investigation deprived the planet of its elite: When the corrupt rulers of St. Sabasto’s Reach fell, the slave economy they had established was thrown into an uproar. And all that the Brothers Galth had worked so hard to attain was lost.

This could have been the end of their story, but Augustus had always been good at recognising opportunities. So when the lesser nobles houses began a struggle to fill the vacuum of power that had been left by the Inquisitorial purges, The Brothers Galth earned a new place for themselves, working as enforcers and bounty hunters for the world’s up and coming nobility. And even though their new employers may have found the twisted creatures distasteful, there was little question that the brothers got the job done every time.

Their service eventually earned them a writ from the new planetary governor, affording them all the rights of an Imperial citizen as well as free passage through the whole subsector. And so the Brothers Galth embarked upon a new journey, their single ambition to run down the Inquisitor whose deeds had cost them everything…

Although the following models were built for my Traitor Guard, I'll still post them here since they should also work rather nicely in ganes of INQ28.

First up, my first finished squad of chaos cultists, led by a traitorous commissar.

And here's a renegade psyker I converted from a WFB Chaos Sorcerer. I think this guy would work rather well as a cult leader or "end boss" in a campaign of INQ28:

If you want to see more pictures or learn more about the conversion, just check out my Chaos thread.

As always, thanks for looking and stay tuned for more!

Thanks a lot, Rogue Wolves!

Just a small terrain project in today's update, although this may be just the right thing for slow days, when you want to get something done on the hobby front, but don’t feel like breaking out all the colours and really going to town on a model. What I'd like to talk about today is how to make some quick and easy barricades for use as scatter terrain for games of Necromunda, Inquisitor 28 (or any other skirmisher, for that matter) or even good ol' 40k.

For me, everything started when I saw this picture on DRommel’s Savlar Chem-Dog plog (very much worth visiting, by the way!). There I saw this:

(image appears courtesy of DRommel, of course)

This barricade looked quite excellent and fairly easy to duplicate at the same time to me. So, full of inspiration, I sat down to reverse-engineer DRommel’s recipe and build my own barricades in very short time with nothing but leftover stuff. Here’s how:

I. What we need:

Here are all the ingredients. The good news is that you will probably have most of this lying around anyway

Some pieces of foamcore. For this you can basically use all the leftovers from other projects. You’ll need a couple of longer cuts, though, to make the bases for the brarricades.

Some corrugated cardboard. This comes in all shapes and measurements. Be sure to use cardboard that’s easy enough to cut. This will make for very convincing corrugated metal and help to break up all the otherwise smooth foamcore surfaces.

A couple of bitz. Anything goes here. Choose whatever you find at the bottom of your bitz box. Vaguely technical looking parts are best. I used some parts from an old model truck and some stuff from an old military terrain kit. Oh, and pieces of leftover sprue make for great sharpened stakes! And we all have tons of that stuff lying around, don’t we?

If you want to follow this recipe, you’ll also need some basing materials. Sand, cork, whatever you like.

Right, let’s get started, shall we?

II. What to do:

I started by drawing the outlines for the bases on some bigger pieces of foamcore, using a 40k bike base as a template. You can make all of the bases the same lenght, although it may be a good idea to make some longer and some shorter ones for added flexibility. I cut out the bases using a craft knife.

Then I beveled the edges of the bases with my knife. I did this so they would look more natural on the tabletop. Don’t worry if your bases – like mine – do look rather messy at this point: We’ll be able to fix that shortly!

I cut smaller pieces from the leftover foamcore and corrugated cardboard. These pieces form the main body of the barricade, so make sure to have a nice selection of different lenghts. The less rectangular the shape, the better.

I then glued the smaller pieces onto the bases using wood glue. I tried to make this basic construction look pretty haphazard, like random pieces had been collected and thrown together.

Then I added the corrugated cardboard to add some additional variety…

..and repeated the same step with the leftover bitz, sharpened pieces of sprue etc. At this point, the basic construction was finished.

Then I added my basing materials to the bases, using wood glue to glue them down. In this particular case, I used a mix of GW modelling sand and small pieces of cork. I also used the glue to seal all open areas of foam, so the foam wouldn’t disintegrate during the next step.

Then everything was painted using cheap spray paint from the craft store. I chose brown as a basecoat because I wanted the barricades to have a rusty, dilapidated look.

As you can see, the unified paint did a great job of tying together all the disparate parts. I then stippled GW Vermin Brown onto the barricades, creating patches of rust. Then I drybrushed the edges of the barricades with GW Boltgun (also stippling on some more Boltgun Metal). Then I painted thinned down Vermin Brown into the recesses — especially on the corrugated cardboard! The sand and cork on the bases were drybrushed with GW Bleached Bone. And lastly, I used GW Nuln Oil to paint on patches of oil, grime etc.

Here are the finished barricades:

This was the easiest recipe I could think of. These barricades come at basically no cost, and you’ll be able to churn out a ton of them in no time at all! Of course you can add some more variety by adding different colours, propaganda posters and all kinds of bitz. Ultimately, this may be the easiest terrain project I have ever done (and probably the one with the most bang for the – nonexistent – buck!).

Let’s wind up this post wit some shots of the barricades and some models. These photos also show you how flexible the barricades are:

Some twists behind a single barricade

A gang of twists defending their ramshackle fortifications

Now, I do of course realise that this little tutorial is not really that spectacular or creative to begin with. But I wanted to show you how easy it is to get started on smaller projects that may someday evolve into something as spectacular as Bruticus' hab block here (seriously, check that thing out! It's completely off the hook!). Small scatter terrain like the barricades above will come in handy during games of Inquisitor or Necromunda. And, as I have tried to show you in this post, it’s ridiculously easy to built, at basically no extra cost!

Thanks to DRommel for the inspiration, and as always, thanks to you for looking! Have a great weekend and stay tuned for more!

Right, I realise that it has been some time since I last updated this thread with a new INQ28 model, so it's about damn time! Today, I have a couple of new WIP models to show you:

First up, an Inquisitor that I built some time ago: He's a rather simple kitbash from a couple of GK parts and the lower body of a Chaos Sorcerer Lord:

I wanted him to be immediately recognisable as a Psyker, so I chose his equipment accordingly and used a pretty wizened head (from the WFB Zombies).

I also built a second Inquisitor, and though it seems problematic from a gampeplay perspective, I cannot help but see these two as a team of sorts, brains and brawn, if you will. Anyway, here's the model:

This guy is a Puritan of the "Fire and Brimstone" sort, and I guess it shows! With this guy, I wanted to enforce the notion that he was really all about physical conflict, so again I armed and armoured him accordingly.

I really can't shake the feeling that these two are working together, maybe as some kind of Hereticus team tracking rogue Inquisitors? I don't know. Help me out here, people

Oh, and I also have this to show you:

I can't even tell you anything background related about this ...guy, although I kept thinking "Unbound Daemonhost" when I built him...

Anyway, all of these are still WIP. Still, C&C very much welcome, as always!

That unbound host looks great! He(?) immediately reminds me of Pan, with the horns and that pose. I'd say he needs a bit of loose chain hanging off him somewhere to really bring the unbound thing home. Otherwise it's a great daemon.

Thanks a lot guys,

@ The Good Green: Indeed, the Pan resemblance is definitely there! Someone over on the Conclave forums remarked that the daemon looks like a "rickster or tempter daemon sent to try and lead some puritanical Inquisitor down the path of radicalism". I find that a pretty compelling idea.

@ Rogue Wolves: Gerner hit the nail on the head! I used that chaos sorcerer for a number of conversions, so I had some of those heads lying around: I used one for an Emperor's Children champ and one on this daemon.

@ Gerner: Cheers, mate! No blood and viscera for this guy, though. I really don't see him as Khornate. The spine is the tip of a Dark Eldar Chronos tentacle, btw.

Some of you may remember when I posted the first WIP shots of the models I helped convert for the INQ28 warband of my buddy Frankie some time ago.

The first model for his warband was built by me. It's an operative from a monastic order that specialises in training devout assassins as support for Inquisitors and other Imperial agents:

I am still rather proud of the model, if I do say so myself

Frankie wanted an Inquisitrix to be the leader of the warband. This meant things would be a little more complicated, since decent looking (plastic) parts for female models are rather hard to come by in the different GW ranges. And while I myself would have gone for something more baroque and ornate (like PDH's fantastic Calllydia Benadice), Frankie wanted his Inquisitrix to look quite a bit more low-key.

So here's where we left the poor lass about sox months ago:

I wasn't all that happy with the lower body, and the model somehow just wasn't happening. But you guys gave me all kinds of nice ideas, and so, finally, Frankie and me sat down yesterday to sort the model out.

Here's how she looks atm. I give you Inquisitrix Calixa Alrod:

Granted, she may still be a little rough around the edges (the neck area in particular needs quite a bit more work), but overall I think the model is really starting to come together.

C&C always welcome!

Low key he says....gives her a burning sword.

I also am a fan of Inquisitors being very low key, and able to blend in with the surrounding populace, I think it really lends itself to the image of them being an unseen force protecting the imperium. Now, that said, I've never had an issue with OTT Baroque either, which is why the Spiky Rat Packs Inquisitors, as well as PDHs Inquisitrix are some of my firm favorites.

As for Calixa... I'll be honest, I'm not hugely feeling it at the moment. She seems to be a bit indecisive between the two 'images.' She's very played down in her attire, and the hood gives it her a hidden identity. But, at the same time, her chest Armor is very very baroque, as is her sword. I'm not sure, I guess I feel her armor isn't blending in with the rest of her attire? I wonder if it'd look better with a sash or something across it? Flaming sword...? Eh, I can deal with it, because the sculpt is nice, and you are very lucky to find a weapon that scales to a lady, not to a man. I say these things because you said you wanted her to be low key, otherwise she'd be fine!

Post by: KrautScientist

Thanks for the feedback, ghosty!

Indeed, the flaming sword isn't a very subtle weapon Let me explain some of the choices we made, though. That will not necessarily make the choices themselves seem better, just more understandable:

Even if you want to have your Inquisitor look rather low key, the model still has to be a centrepiece for the warband. So there needs to be something impressive or interesting about the model to make it read as the leader. It's pretty complicated to maintain that delicate balance, of course. But it explains why her weapons may seem a little too spectacular at first glance. Plus the model usually shows the Inquisitor during a confrontation of some sort, so it makes sense that she would be geared up for battle. All in all, I think it works out alright: She still looks far less "physical" when stood next to the assassin, but she looks like she can hold her own in battle if she needs to.

Frankie also wanted the sword to be an indication that she's a psyker: The flames on blade are really some kind of witchfire that she can summon at will or something like that.

Oh, and I am not totally sold on the torso myself, but it was the only part in our bitzboxes remotely useful for what we had in mind, so we just had to make do People over at the Conclave suggested cutting off the pointed shoulderguards and replacing them with something more rounded, and I am tempted to agree with them.

On a related note, you wouldn't believe how difficult it is to come up with several cool-looking female models for a warband. I certainly didn't...

I already commented on this on the Conclave (Erasmus Koal) but I had a thought after reading this I figured I'd put here. What about the Dark Eldar Archon arm? I believe it's the same side as the sword arms she has now, would still be holding flames, and would allow for perhaps a more subtle blade sheathed away somewhere on her person.

That could also be a somewhat fun excuse to play with the lighting coming off the flames... which you could do here as well I suppose, just spit-balling an idea that hit me while I was looking at the mini again.

Best of luck!

It was your work (among that of Molotov, PDH and Spiky Rat Pack) that inspired me to try my hand at INQ28 models in the first place. Your recent retinue for Inquisitor Silas is beyond words! For the Inquisitor I think you should definitely carve off the pointy shoulder armour, at the moment it looks like her right arm wouldn't even fit with two sets of shoulder armour on it. That whole shoulder looks a bit awkward. I think also you could try angling the sword so she is looking along it's length, rotate her arm at the elbow, that would look like she is sizing up someone for a sword fight. And maybe bring the plasma pistol in closer to the body if you can. Maybe carve off the giant elf stitch in the hood and smooth it over, it looks a bit rustic at the moment.

Female minis are really hard, generally speaking they look like dark eldar usually, so you have done well to avoid that! I think the main issue is the shoulder pads and the pose, but both things should be easy to fix and she will be a good mini then. The baroque chest armour works well, like she has cast off her concealing cloak in order to better fight her opponent.

Hey everyone,

I realise it's been quite some time since I last updated this thread, but I've been playing around with some INQ28 related stuff lately, so here goes:

First of all, I revisited the model I built for dishonoured guard officer Esteban Revas, adding just one tiny bit, namely a Sanguinary Guard dagger at his hip:

Since I designed Revas to decidedly look like a fencer, I thought it would be interesting if his fencing style incorporated a longer and shorter blade at the same time. It's only a very minor detail, to be sure, but one I am very pleased with nonetheless.

Then I changed another detail on this troglodyte crawler I had built ages ago as a creation of the heretic Genetor Amnon Helix:

The original model used a regular WFB Crypt Ghoul head, but after seeing GW's rather disturbing new take on Vilitch the Curseling, I shaved off the model's eyes and nose, instead opting for a horrible, mostly featureless face. This makes the creature look quite a bit more revolting (and far less like Gollum, which is also a plus).

Last but not least, my buddy Biohazard let me have his Dark Vengeance cultists (thanks again, mate! ), and while some of them will without a doubt be drafted into my Traitor Guard, I alsoI want to use some of those models for INQ28. I did a couple of rough mockups today:

First up, one of the heavies will become an ex-guard/ex-gang guy, a bull of a man wielding a rather huge gun:

I also wanted to transform one of the champions into an Inquisitor - maybe even a more ostentatious version of my Inquisitor Antrecht, yet the model's not coming together nearly as seamlessly as I had planned. Here's what it looks like atm:

As you can see, this guy needs a lot more work. Suggestions always welcome!

And finally, while this guy may end up in my Traitor Guard, he might work as a pretty cool one-off "environmental hazard" during games of INQ28:

I just couldn't resist...

Let me know what you think!

Nice work. On the cultist inquisitor, I suggest changing the sword to something more imperial looking, and altering the left arm so that the pistol points to his right. I think that will improve his pose, which is a bit too much "look at my weapons!" for my taste currently.

Do you find the hand on the dwarf pistol to be too large? I have that bit sitting in my "to use for Inq28" pile and keep passing it over.

Ahhh so thats why you were after these I love the last guy, very effective headswap.

For the Inquisitor, I would swap out the Crux? you currently have added to his chest as I feel its a little too big. The skull is almost the same size as his head, Im sure there are smaller crux with the same detail (kudos for that idea btw)

Now that the hand has been pointed out to me I cant help but notice it as well, I have a couple of the IG Officers with the open or pointing hands if their arms are any use to you I can send them your way?

I think that heavy gunner is my favorite of the new batch. Look forward to seeing him painted up. The duelist has always looked cool to me, and I don't think the dagger really alters my opinion. Are you going to incorporate any special rules for him? Perhaps a special parry/riposte ability?

As for the Inquisitor... yeah the crux and the head seem at odds to me. I'm not sure if the hand needs to point to the right though, as I like the position of the head looking down the barrel. What about the gun arm pointed forward along with the head? That way it's like he's walking directly towards the target he's blasting away at.

Cheers, guys!

@ lasgunpacker: It was a conscious decision to keep the cultist sword on the Inquisitor, since I think it makes for a rather nice, not too OTT, Daemonweapon. As for the other hand with the gun, the hand itself may indeed be a tad too big, which is a damn shame, because I love the look of the pistol, and I kept saving this particular bit for a special occasion...

@ Buddy, I cannot list all the reasons I was after these There's so much to do with them that it took all of my discipline to build the entire first batch as models for my Traitor Guard! My current plan is to still use some of them as cultists, while some others will get the INQ28 treatment. I may even do a small Genestealer cult. Who knows?

The =][= symbol on the Inquisitor is indeed too big, but we'll get to that in a minute

Anyway, I did some more work on these last miniatures, as well as a model from my backlog.

First of all, I tidied up the conversion of the chainsaw maniac:

The weapon was shortened in order to make it look a bit less awkward.

I also glued together the guard veteran:

I liked the model as it was, so the only thing I changed was to carefully trim off the chaos symbol around its neck.

When it comes to the Inquisitor, I took off the too large =][= and tried a couple of different bitz. At the moment, I am tempted to leave the symbol off altogether and make it look like he is wearing some kind of cravat:

What do you think?

And finally, I just felt the need to revisit an unfinished model:

A Kroot shaper inspired by a fantastic Mike Anderson piece in the 40k rulebook that I started working on ages ago. I did some more work on him, and here's the result:

While the model may still not be 100% finished, it feels like it's actually starting to come together.

As always, C&C very welcome!

Whenever I see cravats I think of foppish Empire hats, for me it just looks too stark a contrast with the sword, the military looking head and the almost utilitarian longcoat. Maybe a book or relic might fit in with the aesthetic more or his backstory might explain it? What does the back of the coat look like? Maybe you could freehand a design on the back or use some FW brass etch.

Leather Face - LMAO

I like the Inquisitor but he doesn't really look like an Inquisitor. He looks like a bounty hunter type character.

The Kroot is cool, really nicely done and better than the original. His machete is really good.

The Nobel is my favourite absolutely brilliant. I cannot wait to see him painted.

Yes, I guess he'll need quite a bit more work. I had expected him to come together more quickly, but oh well: These things happen...

You mean the fencer/guard officer, right? Yeah, he has really grown on me too! The only problem is that I lack a good idea regarding which colours to use...

Leather Face is looking like a proper BAMF! Love it!

Have to say I'm really not feeling the Inquisitor. Just a thought, do you have any of the Dark eldar heads with the blank faceplates? I think that could look pretty cool with the trench coat and maybe adding in a cadian or military style torso to cover the chaos scar. Kinda creepy mysterious.

Loving the Fencer and Kroot, and I think your Inquisitor model has a lot of potential to be a really outstanding model. I think the most glaring problem with him thus far is the head. It's too large and bulky for the rest of him, and the headset (to me) is much more of an Imperial Guard staple than Inquisition. I think that an Inquisitor like him, wearing a fancy coat and cravat, would likely go for a more subtle microbead than a full-on military headset. Personally I would go for one of the Empire Greatsword heads, with a nice foppish hat to tie in with his frilly clothes. I would also give him a sword swap for something more elegant and refined looking. If you're going for a more radical look to him and want him to be carrying a Daemon weapon, that's cool, but the cultist sword looks more like a rusty beaten-up piece of metal than a deadly killing tool. I would perhaps consider the blade from the Dark Vengeance Librarian? Love the pistol, don't you dare change it.

Hmm, you're quite right about the head, Dexter! Plus I am getting a bit of flak over at the Ammobunker for the "western style" tie

Anyway, I went through my bitzbox and tried a couple of heads. Here's a composite:

I also exchanged the tie for something with less of a wild west feel -- and the added benefit of a small =][= symbol at the bottom.

Any thoughts?

Post by: lasgunpacker

I like C myself, although I liked the "western" tie better than the current one, as it looks more like something someone would actually wear, instead of a purity seal writ large.

On the otherhand, you could run with that, and have it be more of a purity seal thing than a tie.

KrautScientist's INQ28: Kill Team Ulrach finished! @ 2013/02/12 01:00:24

Post by: DexterKong

Personally I also prefer the cravat you had. The current purity seal tie thingie is nice, and will definitely work, but I think the cravat had a little extra bit of class and elegance that made the Inquisitor look more like a socialite and gentleman. You tell those hooligans over at AmmoBunker I said to stop ragging on you for thinking outside the Blanche Box! Besides, I think that a Western aristocratic look would blend perfectly into the GrimDark imagery.
Now, as far as heads, I prefer D or F, depending on what kind of guy you want him to be. Obviously if he's young and handsome (like me), D is the better choice. I like that the hairstyle and expression conveys an almost Three Musketeers style to him. F would be perfect for an older, grumpier sort, like Peter.

Post by: KrautScientist

Thanks, guys!

Regarding the Inquisitor, I am actually rather fond of heads A and B, to tell you the truth. D would be an interesting option, yet it's an option that I may want to keep for when it comes to building one of my buddy Frankie's characters, a charismatic Chaos worshipper/Infiltraitor named Laslin.

When it comes to the tie, it's important to note that, whatever tie he ends up with, it, alomg with the underlying shirt, will probably be painted similar to the one on this FFXII character (the coat will be completely different, though, so ignore that part of the character design). So even if I should keep this one, it won't be as a purity seal, but rather as an expensive black (or dark grey) piece of silk or something similar.

And then there's the Kroot: After some time of mulling it over, I've decided to leave the feathers on the head off for now. I'll just paint the model without them and see if I like it well enough. I still think that feathers and Kroot are a good match (and there actually is some background precedent for that, with the Kroot worshipping the Kroothawks as their avian progenitors), but I think leaving the feathers off makes him look leaner and meaner:

Man, love Revas - I like the combination of parts, they fit perfectly.

In terms of the Inquisitor, I too, liked the cravat look. (man, everyone is so cultured here... necktie, anyone? Anyone?) The inquisitor parchment is much more obvious and probably fits better with the actual outfit, as was mentioned before. For the head, D was my choice, but he's called out for Laslin. Then F, if he's not gonna be handsome, might as well go the other route and make him look like he got beaten with an ugly stick.

Great conversions, man. I'm impressed with your production, regularly updating 3 different blogs at once.

Thanks for all the kind words, guys! And thansk for all the input regarding the WIP Inquisitor!

@ lone dirty dog: You mean the tie, right? The first one I tried is a piece of decoration from the WFB High Elf Dragon Princes, IIRC. The second one (with the small =][= at the bottom) is the lower half of a purity seal from the power armoured GK kit.

All in all, I'm still not entirely decided about the fate of the WIP Inquisitor. He'll probably end up as the head of a tentative Ordo Xenos warband, however, since that is the one major Ordo I Have not yet started a warband for

All the kitbashing using Biohazard's cultists has given me quite an appetite for more INQ28, and it seems like I chose a good time for it, too: With John Blanche’s monthly column in WD regularly dedicated to INQ28 models, and with the work of exceptionally talented artists like PDH and migsula indeed being published in WD proper, it is very clearly a great time for being an INQ28 aficionado.

Looking at so many great models has given me a new hunger for building more INQ28 models and tweaking some of the existing ones. So I would like to show you a small gallery of my latest WIPs. Some of these are models I already posted some time ago I chose to revisit and touch up. Some are recent additions to my collection. I usually enjoy working on several of these at the same time, different as they may turn out in the end. But all of them have one thing in common: They are either good, bad or ugly* — or a combination of the above. Let’s take a look:

1.) Inquisitor Gotthardt’s Retinue:

The first few models will end up as retainers to Inquisitor Erasmus Gotthardt, of the Ordo Hereticus. All of these were previously posted on this thread, yet I have worked on them some more since then, hammering out the last kinks and rough edges, dealing with unfinished stuff and taking to heart the feedback I received on forums.

Former Guard Captain Esteban Revas

Well, here he is, once again. I didn't change anything about the model since I last posted him, although I did take the time to take some better pictures All in all, I am very pleased with this model, and will paint it up as soon as I have managed to stop obsessing over the colour combination…

Drill Abbot

I followed the advice of my fellow forumites and slightly shortened this fellow’s neck, to make him look like a bulldog of a man. And I added a couple of additional items to his belt to bulk him out even more and to show that he carries some additional equipment (and quite a few items of worship, like the small reliquary and a cask of holy water at his side):

Painting wise, I imagine a combination of rich reds and browns would be the best way to go for this character, along with a healthy complexion and a grey beard. We’ll see…

Retired Arbites Judge/Security Agent

I wanted this guy to look like a tough-as-nails ex-hive-cop who knows every trick in the book and is quite used to walking the beat on the wrong side of the monorail tracks, and the pilot model from the “Battle for Maccrage” boxed set nicely fit the bill. Since we last saw this guy, I replaced the clunky DA power maul with a more fitting stun baton, spliced together from the grip of the aforementioned maul and a WFB Marauder weapon. Again, it’s a small but important change.

2.) Inquisitor Fiegmund’s retinue

As an addition to Inquisitor Antrecht’s collection of carnival freaks and Inquisitor Gotthardt’s more middle-of-the-road approach, Inquisitor Fiegmund’s retinue will be as gothic and scary as they come. You see, Holm Fiegmund is a puritan member of the Ordo Hereticus whose hunt for Antrecht has driven him over the edge (and horribly scarred him for life, causing others to refer to him behind his back as the “Maimed Man”). In short, I want Fiegmund’s retinue to be a pretty dark and uncompromising looking bunch. Here are the first models:

Preacher/Redemptionist Priest

Well, you cannot have a puritan Hereticus warband without one of these. The model is a pretty straightforward kitbash, using parts of the Empire flagellants, a Guard laspistol and a Khorne Berzerker chainsword to make a suitably imposing eviscerator.

The Dancer

This bonny lass, codenamed “The Dancer” is a (death cult) assassin in the employ of Inquisitor Fiegmund. I have this idea about several members of Fiegmund’s retinue being female, which should be an interesting way of setting off the dark, gothic look.
In this case, the model was built using mainly Wych parts from the Dark Eldar Venom kit. I then added a couple of more Imperial looking bitz, including a servo skull for a head. I want to leave the Dancer’s actual nature deliciously ambiguous: Is she a cultist, a servitor or something altogether different? Only Inquisitor Fiegmund would know, and he certainly isn’t telling…

Expect more pretty fethed up models for this particular retinue in the future…

3.) Yet another retinue — Xenos this time?

I’ll be honest with you: Building Inquisitorial retinues is a pasttime I simply cannot get enough of. I can get quite a kick creating new Inquisitors pondering their relations to their retainers and all the stories behind that, even withhout ever actually having to use the characters in a game. And I recently realised that I had not yet managed to come up with an Inquisitor belonging to the Ordo Xenos…

Like I stated above, the WIP Inquisitor with the tie will probably end up heading this particular warband. There are two more members so far:

Kroot Shaper / Pathfinder

Also pretty much unchanged since his last appearance on this thread. I have grown rather fond of the model, though I actually have quite an interesting/tragic backstory for the character, floating around half-formed at the back of my head, and painting him should be a nice change of pace. I also think he might have an interesting, if grudgingly amicable, relationship with the next character…

Imperial Guard Veteran/former Hive Ganger

Again, you already know this guy. I guess the model's complete and ready to be painted.

In any case, the Xenos retinue will need a bit more work, but I am definitely getting there…

4.) A servant of the Dark Gods

Well, you know what they say: Evil never sleeps. So it was clear I also needed to build another villain...

Father Pain

Having already built champions of Khorne, Nurgle and Tzeentch for my Traitor Guard, “Urash’s Marauders”, I needed a model to represent a mighty follower od Slaanesh. The solution to this particular problem arrived when Biohazard sent me the chaos priest from the WFB Warshrine of Chaos. Since the guy was quite the beefcake, I thought his immaculate physique would make him a nice fit for a follower of the dark prince:

Two new hands, a new head and some GS later, Father Pain was born. I realise the greenstuffed area will need quite a bit more work, but I think you can see where this is going. The glaive came from the new WFB plastic Chaos Lord, by the way:

All in all, I think the model makes for a quite convincing champion of Slaanesh, and he would also work as a cult leader in games of INQ28.

As you can, see, I have got lots and lots on my plate regarding INQ28 models. Lord knows when I am actually going to get around painting these, but I just can’t stop kitbashing them — it’s just too much fun… ;-)

In any case, C&C are always welcome! And, as always, thanks for looking and stay tuned for more!

* I do of course realise that the idea of arranging INQ28 models by their respective goodness, badness or ugliness was very much migsula’s idea to begin with. So let’s just say I was inspired by his work (which is totally true) and didn’t just steal this particular idea ;-)

Awesome! Esteban is still a winner, but the new guys - the Drill Abbot, the Ex-Judge (love the old Sith look to this guy's face), and the "Dancer"... very very cool!

Here I thought you were going to beat me to the Laughing Man... C'mon... you know you wanna do it - you have the image in your head already. Feel free, it's totally your brainchild, man!

The Father of Pain is also a very interesting miniature - I like the use of the WHFB Chaos Lord's funky "crackle-spear", and it's overall a solid mini and intimidating enemy. Where are the legs from?

Either way, you and your prodigious kitbashing... I can't wait to see what else you come up with.

Wow! Your latest miniatures are truly something to behold! Ok, first things first:

Esteban Revas: I love this guy, he's really grown on me. The arrogance he gives off from his stance is really solid, and the dueling blades is a stroke of genius! I am curious how effective he'll be in a duel with that giant helmet on his head and the giant metal mittens on, but I'm sure he's not the type to get into fights if he can help it in the first place!

Drill Abbot: I like him, and I think the shorter neck is a definite improvement, but I still feel his pose is very static. What is the pose you're trying to achieve with him? I think he could be much more dynamic! If you're trying to get him to be a solid, static pose, He could be hefting his warhammer on his shoulder and holding the lantern in front of him, either to ward off evil, or to light the way. Alternatively, a two handed approach to the mallet will give him a much more dynamic stance.

Preacher/Redemptionist Priest : I love him! Great mini, very fire and brimstone.

The Dancer: Oh man oh man! I think I'm in love! She gives off such a culty vibe, with the sacrificial knife. I think it really echoes the whole haemovore/ cannibal vibe the Death Cultists are supposed to have, which is majorly cool. Her pose is really dynamic too, and the Dark Eldar bits are nicely offset by the Imperial imagery, making this my favorite miniature of the litter!

Those one's I have picked are my favorites, the kroot is cool, and I think the heavy is a bit basic I guess, but the head adds loads of character. I'm eagerly waiting to see the progression of the Slaanesh cult leader, but man, I really dislike his legs. Nothing you've done, but they look so soft and undetailed. Definitely not my cup of tea I'm afraid, but his top half, wow! You've really made him into something so sinister, and so so cool.

Nice work! I like all the new figures, although with the dancer, it seems like the servo skull head needs a neck, and maybe some hair would help to push her more into the "human" camp.

The athame from the empire wizard kit is a great second knife, and something I am going to have to look at for my own death cultist types.

Post by: KrautScientist

Thanks a lot for the well-considered feedback, guys!

I'll just address it model by model, if it's all the same to you :

Esteban Revas
Well, there is little more to say about him. I really like the model, and I may have the most detailed background for him out of all my INQ28 models. And Yellowbeard, I really see him as being quite good at fencing. It's only that he has a rather, shall we say, limited and outdated view of fighting, full of ridiculous concepts like "chivalry" and "honour" and all that pre-WWI jazz Anyway, I can't say I'm sure I'll be able to make him work as a playing piece, but he should be very interesting as a character in the narrative!

Drill Abbot
I guess I have just about done anything with the mini I can: The Bretonnian monk body, although really cool, doesn't lend itself very well to conversion, short of cutting everything apart and thereby ruining the piece. So I guess I won't be changing the pose all that much, static as it may be. At least it nicely shows off the fact that his hammer is much taller than he is Oh, and I may be able to actually add s small beer cask (or mug) to him, Yellowbeard

The Dancer
I did indeed try to give her a neck, lasgunpacker, but all my attempts made the model look even more goofy, so I guess she'll have to remain "neckless". Oh, and I really don't want to make her look more human, so no hair for her, sorry

Father Pain
The body (minus the right arm, left hand and head) is actually a single piece! Like in ye olden WFB plastic boxes, huh? Anyway, the legs, especially the lower legs, really are a weak point here. Unfortunately, there seems to be no immediately obvious way to fix this, short of using altogether different legs. But this guy is so large that it would be difficult to find legs that fit the scale, so I'll just try to go for a really nice paintjob to disguise how horrible the legs actually are.

He also won't receive any Slaaneshi symbols, since almost none of my Traitor commanders sport any runes of their gods, to enforce the impression that, although single commanders might feel drawn to a particular god, the overall force remains undivided. Still, seeing them side by side, it should be very easy to tell which guy worships which god

The father pain clown shoes might be replacable if you fancy sculpting or some cut and paste work to create replacements. Space marine feet might work.

As for the dancer's neck, maybe something cabled? Possibly a bundle of cables?

Thanks, guys!

@ lasgunpacker: Yes, a bionic neck of some sort might do the trick. I'll look into it.

@ PDH: As a matter of fact, I am considering adding a small keg of beer from one of the Bretonnian kits to the model...

Alright, a rather small update, but an update nonetheless:

Looking at my Esteban Revas model...

...I felt that he really needed a loyal retainer, playing the part of buttmonkey to his aristocratic haughtiness. I thought of a trooper in the Haaruthian Guard, rescued from death by Revas' late father and thus eternally grateful to the family, paying back his life debt by serving the son of his personal hero. As I turned the idea around in my head, I got all kinds of rather neat narrative ideas as well, but let's look at the WIP model first:

I wanted the retainer to fit the somewhat medieval look of Revas himself. But since he would be a rank and file soldier, I needed him to look quite a bit less flashy. My initial idea was to convert the model from an old Advanced HeroQuest henchman:

But I simply couldn't bring myself to cut up that model, so I had to come up with something reasonably similar, using a Bretonnian body and a couple of rather medieval bitz. Meet Trooper Koltz, everyone:

Oh, and I thought it would be a really cool and characterful idea to have Koltz lugging around all kinds of equipment and personal possessions of his master, so I added all kinds of stuff to his back:

I am rather fond of this guy, to tell you the truth! Let me know what you think!

Definitely digging the alternate Koltz. I also have some sort of "block", being unable to cut up or otherwise use my ancient figures. - Got a red plastic Elf Hero from the original HeroQuest sitting in my bits box. He's come many times to being some "statue" for... something... but I simply don't have the heart to cut him off at the legs, or otherwise go in that direction.

It's a pretty fair mock-up of the base model - my favorite bit is the Kroot rifle muzzle on the lasgun. Very sweet looking toy. Plus his carrying everything but the kitchen sink for Revas... very neat - Will there be a in-game penalty for carrying so much worthless crap? Were I the one with this model, I almost certainly would for flavor's sake.

Very nice - I can't wait to see both of them painted. Will they share some sort of color-scheme, show they're from the same House?

Thanks, Remi!

It's funny how the models we have considered to be far worse than the "modern" 40k and Fantasy stuff for years now start to become increasingly rare (and increasingly dear to us), isn't it? Ten years ago, I would happily have cut up all of my old HeroQuest and Space Crusade stuff, but nowadays, I am feeling quite a bit more hesitant about it...

Anyway, I'm happy to see that Koltz obviously works as intended The Kroot rifle's muzzle was a spontaneous idea in order to symbolise either how the Haaruthian regiments are using a variation of the standard guard pattern lasrifle, or to show that Koltz has at least managed to get his hands on some more advanced equipment Oh, and I'll definitely be painting both Koltz and Revas in identical (or at least similar) colours to show how they both served in the same regiment (or are, indeed, part of the same household).

Exactly! That Elf Hero has no use to me now, but when we played as kids, he was MY hero - Earth magic and the Orcrist equivalent blade... my elf couldn't be beat. I have fond memories of him, and I don't wish to demean him. Same thing like a pewter Chaos wizard I was thinking of using on Batman... I started Skaven all those years ago, but I liked the model. Looks like crap now, but yea... it lingers in my bitz box with no purpose.

I know I'm a bit late commenting here, but I wanted to throw my two cents in before you start painting things.

I think Koltz is a really inspired model, and I like that he was designed with a personal relationship to Revas in mind. I think when that sort of thought is put into the buildup of warbands, the end result is a much more interesting and cohesive unit. My one complaint about Koltz is that his head seems somehow wrong to me. It seems to be the face of a young, brash trooper, and his background suggests that he is more of an older, grizzled veteran (being that he was saved by Revas' father). I did some poking around, and I think that this head would be more appropriate:
Spoiler:

It keeps the medieval styled helm, but the expression is much more solemn, and the scar perhaps hints at the close call with death that Revas' father saved him from.

Other than that, he's perfect. I'm really looking forward to seeing him painted up.

Oh yeah add that beer barrel :-)

The squire is a great model. I really like the medieval mixed with the sci-fi.

Thanks a lot, gents!

@ DexterKong: Dexter, that's a great suggestion! Is that a head from the Empire milita kit? Now how to get my hands on that piece...?
Anyway, since the head on Koltz is the only piece I haven't yet permanently attached, it should be easy enough to replace at least.

I did a mockup just for you, mate:

I am slightly worried it may be a bit too bulky though... What do you think?

In any case, the whole affair reminds me of this for some reason...

KrautScientist's INQ28: Kill Team Ulrach finished! @ 2013/03/03 19:01:11

Post by: KrautScientist

Thanks a lot, Karokk!

The body came from the Bretonnian Men at Arms. It's a pretty cool kit, with lots of really characterful pieces. Unfortunately, the bodies are all pretty small, so models build from the kit will always look quite puny next to most other models (especially when compared to Cadians).

It's also the only kit to feature a perfectly rendered snail, as far as I am aware

Been watching this thread for long. Man, these are some creative conversions out there, reminding me of the work of Blanche himself (for those who haven't seen them: http://gothicpunk.tumblr.com/tagged/miniatures)
My fave, however, would be Esteban Revas model. As simple as this kitbash may be, it captures the "sci-fi medieval" look of the Imperium perfectly, and is everything what an aristocratic officer should be.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks a lot, guys!

While I am not yet 100% sure whether I'll keep the beer cask, I'll admit it does add a little "je ne sais quoi" to the model

And thanks for the kind words all around about Revas: I have to be honest with you, he is rapidly turning into one of my favourites as well, if I do say so myself.

@ kencotter: Cheers, mate! I feel honoured! Will comment in more detail over on your thread ASAP!

Sorry Kraut, I must have looked at this threads hundreds of times for inspiration and I never realized I'd been so awestruck I've never actually commented!

I just wanted to say that your flare for this is astounding, your ability to capture character and the gothic feel of 40k is really inspiring, since seeing your stuff I have noticed myself unthinkingly taking more time on each figure, adding more gubbins, trying to imitate the uniqueness of your models.

I will en-devour to comment more often, in the mean time, dont stop!

I am afraid to say I am not a fan of the barrel...it just doesn't quite work for, I think it is too big. Perhaps a small barrel on his belt sort of water bottle sized would be better.

I think his back should have random bionic vent type thing...you know what I mean.

I really want to see some paint on the duellist.

Maybe an oil drum type barrel? The wooden barrel looks a bit archaic. Or maybe just a beer hat.

Post by: KrautScientist

Thanks, guys!

@ J-Paint: Aww, that is very nice of you to say, mate! i really appreciate it!

@ PDH & Bruticus: I agree that the barrel is a bit much -- especially for a 40k character. I may just cut off the small beer mug and use that on his belt. It's smaller and it may still work as a small visual cue. I won't be going overbard with bionics on this guy, though, since I want Inquisitor Gotthardt's retinue to look somewhat less dark and foreboding and more "normal", for lack of a better word

Cheers, Janus! As would I! Maybe once I manage to stop obsessing over what colours to use on him...

Alright, I realise it's been some time since the last update, but I have been far from idle! Apart from a top secret project (more on that soon...), I've been messing around with all kinds of INQ28-related models. Some new threads and blogs - among which the fabulous Officio Convertorum warrants a special mention - have been a tremendous inspiration, so I have quite a few new things to show you. Most of the following models are still heavily work in progress, so your input on any of these is especially welcome

First up, a couple of cultists / hive scum:

Just a couple of simple headswaps, these. They'll either end up painted as regular traitors for my Traitor Guard, as some kind of hive scum or even as ragtag followers to an Inquisitor? Not sure yet...

I've also started to build a pretty old-skool Hive Ganger, based on an old Necromunda plastic Orlock:

Got the plastic starter models from an auction a while ago, and they were in horrible shape! So I am slowly rebuilding this guy (new head and right arm so far). Nothing spectacular yet, although I am thinking of giving him a classic "Mad Max" colour scheme, as soon as it's time to paint the model...

Then there's this interesting fellow:

The base model was a Skaven Herder from the WFB starter box. The addition of a chaos cultist gas mask added a certain je ne sais quoi to the model, although I am lost regarding what hands/weapons to give him (gave away the original warpstone staff he came with) -- any suggestions?

Then there's a mutant based on an old Gorkamorka Orc:

Those Crypt Ghoul heads are sooo useful

And here's a model I am already pretty fond of. I am thinking of him as some kind of sanctioned psyker:

The right arm needs a bit of work, of course, to make that thing he holds look more like a sceptre of some sort. Or I could use something a bit more like a staff:

(ignore the top of the staff -- that would need to go, of course).

He's just tacked together for now -- any ideas or suggestions?

Oh, and a bitz drop courtesy of Gerner gave me a new and promising head for that WIP-Xenos Inquisitor I posted some time ago:

What do you think?

And finally, I also managed to get something painted -- at least in part... Here's a look at the mutant bounty hunter / tracker based on some Quovandius artwork from the Inquisitor Rulebook:

The paintjob's not quite there yet, but I guess you can see where this is headed.

So yeah, that's my unsorted Idea dump for now! Any and all C&C much appreciated, as always!

Thanks for looking and stay tuned for more!

Very nice work there, especially on the old Orlock figure, are you thinking of maybe a tire chain, or tire iron to tie into the Mad Max vibe?

I don't know why but that screams deranged doctor to me, maybe its the robe with the bare arms that makes me think it. Maybe a taloned left hand from a DV cultist and syringe from the Catachan HQ box set would complete the look as if he is reaching down to subdue a wounded individual to use later as a specimen.

I envy you and your extensive bits box. The kitbashes are all really sweet looking - damn me for not considering using Skaven bodies...

One teeeeny nitpick - The Psyker pose and clothes look great. The head is a great fit style-wise for the Sanctioned Psyker look. However, something about the head is a little off to me... too big?

Oh yea... still got most of those original Orlocks on the sprue... I'll be back to my parents' house over the weekend to pick up my pup, and will try to get them into my possession.

What an update mate!!

Good to see you use the bits, I'm still hunting down my mailman for my package.

About the psyker I actual think that if you shorten it down (or maybe just keep it) you could do some flames in the top part, throw on some purity seals, maybe a censer and then I think it will be awesome. Try it out atleast!

Anyways, good stuff as always!

The psycher: keep the pose with the staff stretched out forward, please! In combo with the "comm-thingie" posture of the left arm it looks so... professional! Every stupid little hedge wizzard carries around a large staff to lean on, that's like actually having "wizzard" stitched on your pointy hat. This guy has a staff - and he knows how to handle it! It's like the difference in western movies. One guy carries a gun, the other wears it.

Hey Buddy, sorry for keeping you waiting. After I posted last night, a certain lady had a fatal hair malfunction (My fingers squashed her hair in other words) so I had to spend the rest of the evening painstakingly redoing it. She's finished though, and I'd love to see what you think of her! But anyway, onto your miniatures. Quite a little update you've come out with, so I'll go through each miniature step by step, saying what I like about them, what I'm not such a fan of, and what could be improved. Figure you doing it to me has helped me improve my miniatures a lot, so I hope it'll do the same for you.So, let's get our game faces on, and start from the top!

I like these guys, the head swaps might be simple, as you said, but they add a bunch of extra character to the miniatures, giving them more of a backstory, as opposed to being just 'faceless' gunmen. I envision the one on the far right being a lunatic escaped from an asylum, or something similar; the iron maiden esque cage on his head, along with the gun-ho attitude of running at his enemies with a barbed metal pipe, gives off a real manic appearance. That said, I can't really see him as anything really else; obviously he could be a cultist, as those guys are crazy(!) but his kit doesn't really fit the image of a Hive scum, or a Henchmen. The guy front and center, I really like, I can see him as either a henchmen, or a Scummer; the key thing is to remove the little chaotic iconography from him, and you're set to go. But as I said, he's very characterful, and I must say I'm a big fan. Man on the left? He just says cultist to me. I think if he was painted in inquisitorial colours you could get away with him being a henchmen (chaos trinkets removed, of course) but I can't really see a rough and ready scummer running around in flapping robes. That said, this is the 41st millennium, I'm sure anything goes! Overall, these guys are a solid addition to your Inq28 miniatures.

Ah, restoration work! I am a fan. Let's see then, I'd say this guy has a lot of potential, simply because you don't see old miniatures so much anymore, and as such, he'll be fairly unique in comparison to everyone else. Am I right in saying the miniature is an Orlock Juve? If that's right, he could make for a great little sidekick to one of your Inquisitors, maybe a young kid who was the sole survivor of some atrocity, and the Inquisitor brought him along for the ride, grooming him to be an Interrogator...? (Hmm, that sounds suspiciously like my Huss character, haha!) Regardless of what you plan for him, I really like how he's coming along, the chunky laspistol is sexy!

Very interested with what you plan for this. It's early days, but I'm assuming he'll be heading for your muties? The gasmask gives him either a disturbingly large head, mutants are creepy afterall, or he's a young one, a gangling kid. Either works well! Now as for weapons, he's quite a slight miniature, so I'd say the hands should probably be from the ghoul box (If you can stand making him seem like a haemonculous) the long spindly fingers would really add to his sinister vibe, plus the plethora of bits and pieces the ghoul miniatures hold could give you some ideas. Remember, he doesn't necessarily have to be holding anything, he could just be bare handed, using his long spindly fingers to strangle the life out of his victims... ooh the shudders! Not sure if youalready have or not, but remember to remove his rat tail!

I really like what you're doing with the gorkamorka orks; I used to have a few of them myself, I always liked them. They also really add some identity, a unifying factor to the disparate Muties, tying them convincingly together, which allows for more outlandish skin tones. Now, what I'm not such a fan of with his guy his his spear arm? I'm not really sure about it, it looks a bit superfluous, especially when he's also wielding a mean looking blade in his other hand. Again, he could have anything in that other hand, a hand holding severed heads? A piece of junk he's examining? It really could be anything, but currently, I'm not so convinced by the bladearm. Still, I will reserve any judgement until I've seen him painted up, or if you explain the thought process behind it.

I like him, and I'm also a bit reserved about him. His pose is great; if you swap out his magic wand with some kind of staff, he'll look very much the part. My only concerns are his proportions right now. He's got a big old cranium, and large hands, a teeny tiny waist, and little feet. This can be easily fixed though. If you bulk out his waist, which you can d without and modelling putty; just add some baggage around there, imperial guard water cannister, pouches, crazy technological watsits, anything, but it can really mask the slightness of the elf legs, and he'll still look great. Then just replace his little feet with some chunkier boots. Imperial guard Cadian or Catachan work equally as well; it'll make him look the same proportions as his hands and head, and he'll look a lot more cohesive. What I am a fan of is his head. Man, the Grey Knight heads seem designed for this kin of thing! They work perfectly as Butchers Nails, Psyker heads, all sorts! I really must get my grubby hands of some, they're perfect conversion fodder! I love the slightly wry smile on the face too, it makes the Psyker appear arrogant, and well aware of his power; I can see him thinking of himself as an equal to the Inquisitor he's with (especially if said Inquisitor isn't really psychically inclined, and relies on the Psyker to do the magic when required) giving the Psyker a sense of self worth. Maybe I'm reading too much into it! haha!

obviously still a WIP, so everything is subject to change, but I think he could do with a weapon swap, on both hands. A more elegant sword is definitely needed; maybe a rapier from the Baneblade commander, possibly an Eldar sword if he's Ordo Xenos. The Pistol could be a very nice basis for a 40kification. It could do with maybe a laspack, or a bolter cartridge on it's undercarriage, or something else to denote it as a futuristic pistol, and not a medieval firearm. Now, I am completely torn about the head and tie. On the one hand, I love that head, where is it from?! But on the other hand, it's not saying Inquisitor to me at all. It seems much more like a Guard Veteran, or a gunslingers head. Maybe it's just completely at odds with his attire? The crevatte/ tie is very regal, imperial authoritan esque; whereas the head seems like a rough and ready soldier. It doesn't mesh very well, for me at least. Speaking of the tie, it seems right under his chin, and a bit impractical? It might be just easier to modelling putty one than go the plastic route. But at the same time, I love the little I detail at the bottom! I'm really torn haha. My advice would be a different head, reserve that one for something else, and maybe shave down the tie a bit, or shorten it? Sorry I cant be of anymore help, but I'm not sure what else to say! I think he has the potential to look brilliant, and the base design is there, but not everything is quite there yet.

Well, feth me! He's just brilliant. No other way of putting it. I love the skin tone, the bulging muscles, his gun, everything! The head is particularly good, it's one of the better ones in the ghoul kit I think; very mean. He looks like the Muties big boss (though I'm sure you've got something else planned for the leader already knowing you ). He looks very cruel. The paintjob is superb too. I really like your flesh tones, they look brilliant, and no more so than on this guy, it's fantastic! The rust on the shoulder plate is very nice too. And you say he's not quite done yet?! I eagerly await his completion then!

I hope these observations help you in some way, your blogs are a joy to watch grow, and I love seeing them progress! Now, I have to go fiddle with a tiny female armature some more before I post her up here. She's close to finishing, but I can't quite get there myself. I'm fighting the urge to give her a backpack currently!

Thanks a lot, guys, especially to ghosty, for the well-considered feedback! Let's take it model by model, if it's all the same to you:

The thing with these guys is that I haven't decided what to use them as yet. If they were to become Hive Scum and/or Inquisitorial retainers, I would obviously have to change some weapons, remove the chaos icons etc. Right now, I guess the left one's either Hive scum or a cultist, the middle one could end up as a warband member for an Inquisitor with a bit of work, and the right one will be either chaos or a follower of a particularly zealous Inquisitor of the "fire & brimstone" persuasion -- nothing's decided yet, though.

The Hive Ganger probably won't become a major player in one of the retinues, but rather an NPC model or something like that.
@ Dreadclaw60: The idea of adding a tire chain or tire iron is pure genius, mate! I'll definitely look into it! Maybe I'll just use the improvised weapons from one of the DV cultists -- that might work as well.

Regarding the gas mask mutant, thanks for pointing me in the direction of ghoul parts (and thanks for the "deranged doctor" idea, Dreadclaw69!). I realised I still had some of the supremely creepy ghoul hands lying around and chose one holding a skull. For the other hand, I used a horrible bladelike contraption from the Talos/Cronos kit. Here's where the model's at right now:

I also added a bit of greenstuff to build up the neck area. And the rat tail was removed, of course. I am quite pleased with the new developments. What do you guys think?

I basically built this guy ages ago (with a more human head). Back then, the rationale behind his replacement hand was to make him look more like a mutant in the first place. With the head now replaced, that's certainly no longer an issue, but I have grown strangely fond of the hand for some reason. I guess the paintjob will definitely help to sort this guy out, though!

I agree that the proportions on this guy are still a little dodgy. The head is indeed too big, although I feel that a psyker may be the one human archetype where I can get away with an enlarged head I'll also add some kit to his waist and legs to better blend in the different body parts. I am tempted to keep the sceptre, however, for the reason it does indeed look more professional: I want this guy to be a professional, military psyker. The huge, baroque staff with the incense burner on top will have to wait for another, more demented character

I'll readily admit that the Xenos Inquisitor is still a little rough along the edges. I am tempted to keep both the head and left arm (and pistol), though: I imagine that a Xenos Inquisitor would have to be a bit of a scientist and explorer, and the googles point towards that a little, in my opinion. Regarding the weapon, I like the heavy, robust look of it. It's definitely some kind of revolver/stub gun, designed to be reliable and make big holes. The sword will have to go, though. An Eldar sword may be a little too on the nose, although I'll be looking at several options...

And, finally, the mutant bounty hunter: The paintjob probably won't need too much more work, just a bit of tidying up here and there. The skin is definitely okay as it is. The clothes and equipment will need some more accents. Don't expect any miracles at this stage, though

Anyway, thanks again for your help. Feel free to add more C&C! I'd love to hear your opinions on any of these!

I like the one on the left because I can almost picture him as some sort of nomadic raider on a desert world, or Hive city. The middle one looks like a gang leader of some description, or a hired gun. The one on the right would look more fire and brimstone with a burning torch (Mordheim Witch Hunter or Empire Flagellant) if that was the direction you wanted to persue.

Happy to help and the model looks awesome too!!

I think the model looks fine as it. The slightly overlarge head suits the psyker (although the putty giving it the temporary fix does make the head look a wee bit big). Its nice to see a more military looking Sanctioned Psyker, I can almost see this as his first assignment so he's still very prim, proper and less flamboyant

I like the Inquisitor, but the sword does look out of place. I think that you're right in looking for a Xenos type sword to give hints to his Ordo Xenos background (maybe a miniature Dawn Blade like Commander Farsight - should be easy to make with plasticard). The pistol looks like Old Reliable - simple to maintain, rugged and goes boom everytime. So perfect for an Inquisitor operating away from base investigating the Xenos

Thanks, Dreadclaw69! Again, lots of great suggestions! I love the idea of adding a torch to the guy with the caged face. Plus I agree that the Inquisitor needs some xeno-ish weapon -- I am currently considering using a Dark Elf sword. It doesn't look completely DE, yet it also clearly isn't of Imperial origin.

Anyway, I started to get some paint on the gas mask mutant:

The model may need some fine tuning, but I think it's getting there. Here's a closeup of that fantastically creepy ghoul hand I mentioned:

C&C always welcome!

That biomechanical hand is so creepy. What is this guys motivation, and what will he eventually be part of? The Muties, or something more sinister?

Maybe we finally have the answer to the question "Where do servo-skulls come from?" His back story could be;
As a favour to the Inquisitor the Ad-Mech have dispatched this servant of theirs to collect worthy skulls to become servo skulls for his Ad-Mech master the Inquisitor. This individual was captured from a feral world the Ad-Mech were turning into a Forge World, which had a culture of head hunting and collecting the skulls of their enemies. Those indigenous people who were suitable for the purposes of the Ad-Mech became servitors, Skittarri etc. This one was singled out by the Tech Priests. Those skulls deemed unsuitable he keeps for himself, but to what end is unknown.

A dwarf kit, but don't remember which.

Sorry for not replying earlier, guys: The last few days went by in a bit of a blur due to work-related stuff.

Anyway, regarding the gas mask twist, I really didn't have any plans for his background: He could posssibly be a member of a mutie gang, or a "lab assistant" of the rogue Mechanicus Genetor Amnon Helix, a recurring nemesis of Inquisitor Antrecht. But I also really love Dreadclaw69's suggestion, so it's quite possible I'll stick with it -- thanks, mate!

@ PDH: Ah, now you're just pulling my leg, aren't you?

@ Gerner: Thanks for replying, mate! Just what I was going to answer

Happy to help, especially when the results are as spectacular as these
