Sorry for the absence, guys... Had a bit of an emergency in the workshop that’s taken a couple days to fix… somehow a big jug of water and flow release I had prepared weeks ago suddenly sprang a leak… surprising how far a little more than a gallon of water will go when it’s on carpet next to a bunch of cardboard boxes. What a mess…

But that’s all cleaned up now, and I’m back to infinity. Just put on the basing compound so it looks like they’re on tarmac! Very nearly done now....

I love painting red....

========================

Thanks for all the complements on the birdman mini, you guys! Client was super stoked about it as well... Its his favorite DnD character, so Im happy he has a nice mini to go with it!

@nerd: As I painted this, that particular bird mini of yours was massively inspirational for me Really helped me visualize all of the highlights and the balances of color.

@Dave: Thanks!! Im thrilled he came out as well as he did. Airbrush and a lot of playing with the P3 paints I have floating around here. Then a bit of washing in key spots and plenty of patience with a fine brish
As to the metals- Its simpler than even that. Base with Boltgun metal (or equivalent) wash SWM Armor wash for that grungy wear. Clean up the splotches of wash once it dries with more boltgun, then do a final line highlight with a bright silver! The same bright silver can add nice nerdfest-style scratches and chips.

@SL: Have faith, brother. Miracles come to those who wait
I've been moving him to an alternate workspace so I can fully focus on him and all his component bits- He'll have his time to shine soon.... I just have a lot to do before reapercon next month!

Hi everyone!!
So geez, what a weekend! Oddly for my boss, he gave me the weekend off. This was good, as it meant I had plenty of time to meet a client request to have these infinity chaps wrapped up and shipped on Monday. Making it less good (I tell a lie... I loved it ) was that my DnD group changed dates on me, so the games we usually run every other couple of days ended up being back to back!!

Busy busy busyyyyy.... I still had so much to do on the Infinity guys before they were presentable!
Needless to say, I didn't get much sleep...

But the infinity is D O N E!

Our first closeup is the first Father Knight- Biggest departure from my norm on these guys was the power weapons. I normally airbrush the blends, however with the pure white of the armor getting in the way, I couldnt afford any overspray. All the blades in this army were handpainted with a combination of glazes and wet blending. Could have used a few tweaks along the process, but now I know better for next time.

The second Father Knight:

And an ORC Trooper:

A pair of Magister Knights- The client wanted varied colors on the blades, so I used this as time to experiment with new color blends... He sends me any more, you can bet that Im gonna do one up in magenta!!

A trio of squishy Guardsmen brave Fusiliers.

Five Order Sergeants:

And lastly, my favorite mini of the bunch- The Trauma Doc!
The client and I had a long discussion about what color to do her coat in... Almost went labcoat white, but Im glad he went with a brilliant red- really looks sharp in the sea of white!

Now, phase number the next one... Two minis that I missed in the original batch: A Special Order Sergeant (sniper with camo) and a Teutonic Knight, who will be sporting black armor! (Oh hey, he has a sword too... guess what color its gonna be )

After that, its full on Reapercon prep-time! Got three minis for On The Lamb to do by then, and if I can manage it, I want to finish up a few Brewers minis for Guildball!

Thanks you guys!! Client is thrilled by them as well... So thrilled, that apparently Ill have more in the future!! @_@ (dont worry, WM, your titan comes first )

@WM: By your command! (unless you were doing those DnD figs like you were thinking, of course )
I should be kicking into high gear on the Titan post convention. Ill be recharged and working in a new, slightly larger area. Assuming the blasted card table stops sagging!!! (really gotta find another one soon >< )

@nerd: I have a long way to go before cracking the skin barrier, but watching you do your stuff is infinitely helpful!! The eyes... well, I pure just got lucky on these guys!!! The Infinity sculptors really do have a knack for expressive models, though....

@SL: Its dirt simple, actually... Just takes a bit of finagling- You start with various shades of light gray (applied via zenithal airbrushing), then gloss coat it. After that cures a day, hit the model with a black oil wash to get in all the recesses. Thats where this technique shines- small, heavily lined areas! Let that dry a few hours then carefully clean the flat areas with a paper towel slightly dampened with mineral spirits. this redissolves the oil paint, leaving it only in the recesses. The gloss coat we applied makes sure it doesnt stick!
Hit with a matte varnish, then edge highlight with pure white!

=====================

Busy day of regular 9-5 work, then cleaning my workshop, but I put a bit of work into the two remaining infinity guys. For the Special Order Sergeant, IM going with a geometric camo- almost a Dazzle scheme. Going to put smaller pure black polygons over the gray, and with some minor details after that, he should be looking pretty camo!

On the other side of things is the Teutonic Knight. Hes getting all black armor- Heh... Its one challenge color to the other with this army, Haha!

Another project Im working on is a group of Wulfen. The client has very clean armor on his guys, so I need to replicate one of his minis. Always a toughie...

Lastly, and this is an interesting one... I guess its an old old old Wolf Lord? THe client says its a rather rare model, and Im really excited to paint up the details on him! Lots of fun little bits here and there, from purity seals to the runes/filigree of his axe!

@WM: Ooooh.... That sounds rough...
Not a problem, though- I'm always open, so just let me know

======================

Letting stuff dry on Infinity, so more work on the SW minis- Trying to match some of the client's previously painted stuff, so the highlights are a bit different than my normal stuff. Lots of edge highlights!
Bit more to go on the sharpest edges, then itll be on to blacking out details.

@JoshInJapan: Thank you!! The OTL guys will be happy to hear that. These guys are very much their love letter to Super Sentai, as much as EFT as a whole is one to turn based RPGs of yore. If memory serves, there are plans to round out the team with two additional members- VikingBlack and VikingYellow!

@Archer: Thanks man. I knew that I wanted to bring a little extra color to the model, and that fit the bill. I really loved how the studio guys at CB did the display model, so I tried to emulate it in this particular color scheme. Silly to have so many glowy bits as a sniper, but I gotta say it looks pretty damn cool!

@Tides: Awesome!! Thank you!

I'm not ill, so already a plus from gencon.

Lots of incredible painters here... I'll have to go down artits alley and snap some pics... one painter had this statue of Tiamat that I reeeeally want!!

Pic one: view from the booth:

Also got a tour of reaper hq. They were having some casting issues with trophies, so they had Justin from secret weapon come in and Em from OTLG came along... me being a perpetual third wheel tagged along for the fun of things!

Damn is this place big....

Also got a new mini. Big one from Patrick Keith

Checking in real quick here- Back from Texas and ready for more painting! But before that, I have a lot of catch-up to do at work, so might be a day or two before I get any progress to show!

Will try to do a bit of a retrospective from the trip for you guys as well- Not terribly many pictures, though. Much of my weekend was running demos and just talking, but I think I picked up a thing or two... I definitely have some new toys to play with, jsut gotta wait on them to arrive in the mail!! Just got back from the Dentist, so a wee bit on the sore side- Not much painting at the moment, but figured its high time that I got back here and got you an update!

Had to wait on a box of stuff to be shipped to me from Florida (I didnt have any checked luggage, so had to send it home with the OTL folks!), but that's arrived!

In this magic box of wonders were some sculpting tools, x-acto saw blades, a wet palette, more paint... All super useful, but makes for boring pictures...

Far more interesting are a few of the models I picked up!

At the top left, we have a small resin shed kit from Table Full of Awesome- I gave one of their guys a demo of EFT (he really enjoyed it ) and he gave most of us at the booth one of their kits. Initial impression is kinda neat. Good size for 40k and the like I think. Big farm building. Details look sharp and theres no major warpage. Seems to fit together easily, too. Roof might have some issues, though, as Im not seeing any register marks or pegs... Will have to play with it some more!

Moving counter-clockwise, some autumn terrain stuff I picked up for a future project. Some nice colors, and hopefully I can get the vision in my head to come out right. Well see...

And of course, the giant Maelee from Bombshell miniatures! Really excited to paint something of this scale. never painted anything like it before, so itll be an awesome learning experience!

Another future project is a freebie from the Reapercon swag bag. In their painting competition, theres a curious category called "Mouselings". Never heard of them before, but apperently it was big before chibis were all the rage. Think im gonna paint this guy up and see how he does in that category. Could be neat!

Lastly in the Reapercon update... A monster.

Long story cut short, Reapercon has this weird area where you can swap metal models, bits, etc all by weight. Alternatively, you pay a buck an ounce and see what you find. I was looking through it out of curiosity and found a neat dragon model, but just the body, feet, tail, and one wing. Of courst I bought it on impulse, and almost instantly regretted it. What was I gonna do with half a dragon!?
Em from OtL goes over to that table after I get back to the booth and Ill be damned if she didnt find the arms and other wing!! Now I just gotta get the head cast up special ordered...

COMMISSION PROGRESS!!

Space wolves are carrying on- Finally able to make progress on it now that things have quieted around here. The wet pallette is helping immensely

I also have another mini for On the Lamb- a Light Dragon!

And lastly... All is not quiet on the Warlord front!

Do you guys like plasma? Like a LOT of plasma? So much plasma even the Dark Angels are telling you to turn it down a notch?

How about a BIG DUMB PLASMA CANNON!?

Warlord-sized

This gun has some really beautiful design on it... Tiny details like cabling and the plasma canisters really make this shine. Fits together like a dream, and has some of the cleanest casting Ive ever seen.

whew... Big update, haha///

There are a bunch of fiddly bits I've not yet put on- This is all still dry fit to get everything ready for final assembly.

Big dragon will probably be a deep red. Got plans to build him into a diorama for a competition one of these days... Just need to figure out the other models!

Nice.. good projects in the work...

Plasma is just a bit small otherwise you could use it as a Plasma pistol.

Very much this! Im a wee bit oversized
There are also a few bits extra that arent shown in that picture that would make it look a fair bit chunkier-looking.

Anyways thats what... your 10th avatar this month, Tides?
Guess its better than some people who havent changed theirs since last year's holiday season....

*ahem*

But who would do that. I mean really, how tacky...

Wulfen continue, and I'm seriously loving this wet pallet. It really improves the working time of my paints, especially the mid-blend mixes I tend to make. Left it uncovered as I ate dinner and a few hours later once I came back, every single color I had put on it was still usable!

Definitely helping me keep up speed on these guys... next step is eyes and mouths, then hair and eyebrows... that should really start making these guys pop to life!

Hey I'm usually on mobile, so I have to read everyone's name . It's only fair! That's also why I didn't notice your Christmas lights are still up, Ramos... good news is in just two weeks you'll be in season again

On that note, do you get any kind of break over Christmas and is it possible there will be a warlord building party? I feel like it's the kind of thing you could use many hands for . Will be really cool to see it all together!

@Tides: No break for me, save the odd National Holiday- As far as the warlord, some parts of him are so huge, I think I'd rather need a -crane- than a few sets of hands!!

He is making a little progress here and there when the mood strikes me. Have the plasma Gun drilled and sub-assembled... Still such a beautiful piece...

Today, though, I just have lots of fangs and fur to show:

Went with a couple different colors to add some individuality to the squad. Tried a new way of painting red and blonde hair, and I think I'm getting closer to something I like. Needs a bit of work in depth of color though.

Next stage should make a world of difference- Picking out the silver metals!

Warlord Part 9: Stand Up Drama-dy

By now we've got the legs ready to go, and it's time for the build to go vertical!

When the hips cure, go ahead and put a large rod right in the center. This will slot into the hole we've already drilled into the carapace and will add a bit more structural support to the final model. In the interest of transport and storage, I've decided to refrain from gluing the whole thing together. Two giant chunks of resin are easier to transport than one MASSIVE one! We will be touching on this later, as I have a bit of a plan to make the fit a bit nicer.

Anyways, the legs! Unfortunately I'm missing a couple photos of this process due to my camera going down, so hopefully words will suffice.

The pins we added in the knees last time will ensure that we can pose the legs easier. It's of note that we DON'T GLUE YET! It's all dry-fit right now. Depending on how tightly your pins fit, they might even be able to stand on their own! For mine, I was able to hold the legs and hip assembly together in one hand while I posed it with the other. For those of you who might not have giant ham-hands like me, you might want to get a friend to help you with this and the next few stages.

For my pose, I wanted a little motion to it, as if bracing to fire, so I put the right leg out front a bit. The key is to ensure that you keep the hips centered and parallel to the ground- Otherwise the whole thing will be unbalanced once the large torso section goes on. This is easier than you'd think, though, as the dinner plate-sized feet really help spread out its weight.

Once I found something I was happy with, I set aside one leg and the hips, making sure thatI held the other leg in my desired leg position. Then I took a small drill bit (something like 1/16" or 2mm) and put a hole in the side of the knee, making sure I drilled into the middle of the assembly. I pressed a small length of rod into the holes, then repeated this process on the other side.

You can see the added leg supports in this photo- They're actually just plain old finishing nails! I just nipped these down after gluing so they'd sit flush with the rest of the legs.

By now, the legs are modestly solid, and are able to be manipulated without flopping around everywhere. This is useful for the next step, where we will insert pins through the legs and into the waist.

Similar to how we drilled the knee supports, we will be dry fitting the leg/hip assembly in order to determine where to drill our pins to the hip. One at a time, use the holes we drilled into the upper leg as guides for hip holes. You really only need to drill a little bit at first, just enough to mark the resin. Then you can set the leg aside and drill directly into the hip. It will inevitably be at an angle, so you may drill into the hip-pin if you aren't careful. Just keep a weather-eye out as you go.

Repeat for the other side, then add a suitably-sized pin to each side. Again, no glue, just dry fitting!

Ok, last set of drilling now... The feet!

Using the same setup, manhandling the parts or having your buddy help out, figure out where you need to drill into the "heel". I used the piece of rod I previously installed in the feet to make a mark on the ball joint. After that it was a simple case of drilling the heels.

At this point, it's time to do final checks before gluing. Check that everything lines up how you want it to line up, then glue. I did everything at once, letting the pins align where everything was supposed to go. For the waist, I wrapped a rubber band around it after gluing so that it would cure nice and tight. It shouldn't be necessary to clamp anything else, as the support pin will lock the knees and gravity will ensure a tight fit with the feet.

Oh, and I'd advise you to finalize the orientation of your feet! After the JBWeld cures, you aren't gonna get this thing apart without a chisel!!

Let this cure, then it'll be on to the detailing...

Warlord Part X: Getting a Little Pist(on)

So as I was reviewing my photos for this update, I noticed something I nearly forgot to bring up last time (apart from me realizing it was actually part 9 last time <.< )

JBWeld is tough stuff, but if you can give yourself extra insurance with alternative reinforcement, do it! In my case, I saw that I could use a little something extra on the hips and the ankles, as those two areas are going take the most punishment. So I took my small drill bit (1/16) and put some holes deep into the problem spots. Again, I'm using finishing nails for these pins.
You can fill in any holes easily enough, particularly if you put them on a flat and featureless area. For the hips, this meant drilling nearly perpendicular to the extant waist pin, right underneath where the hip pistons will eventually go.

I did the same thing for the ankles, drilling a pair of pins at opposing angles into the ball joint, then ensuring they went into the meat of the footpad.

Next are the many, many hip pistons. There are 10 small and 2 large pairs.

As with most FW pistons, some minor trimming may be necessary to fit these in the right spots. Dry fitting is your friend here! I found it easiest to slot them together, then just hold them to where I wanted them to go.

When gluing, I did each piston ONE AT A TIME in 2 stages. After dry fitting and trimming, I put a dab of superglue on the inner piston and slid it into place. Then I took tweezers and extended the piston until it fit into its leg hole. Working quickly, I applied just a tiny amount of accelerator to the superglue, then ensured it was straight. Remember- no one likes a crooked piston!

With that cured, I glued it in its final place with epoxy. Fortunately for us, the epoxy is really sticky stuff, so we shouldn't need to rubber band or clamp the pistons. You can of course do so if you wish. I that case, I'd recommend just wrapping a piece of string or thread a few times around the assembly to ensure that it doesn't move while curing.

With all that said and done, you should be looking at a very nice, very heavy pair of legs!

Till next time!~

The level of detail on this is quite staggering really, guess that's why it is so much money, and once done it will be stunning. Very interesting seeing it come together.

I did think like the others it is going to be a pain to get in behind those pistons now, but I guess it will be fairly bland behind there, and I am not sure how much of it you would see once the model is complete anyway. If this was on the table in front of me, the last thing I would be looking at would be it's crutch.

Warlord Part 11: Staring into the Sunfury

=======================

Let's set the body and legs aside for a few moments now and contemplate weaponry.

As of this writing, Forge World has three main weapons for the Warlord. The first we have already explored waaaaay back in Part 2: the Belicosa Volcano Cannon. This bad boy gets a pair of those (in a future update we will be making them swappable). The second is a big power fist (sadly my client isnt getting one ). The third weapon option I simply call "Big Dumb Plasma!"

This is the Sunfury Plasma Annihilator!

=======================

So ok. On to the build!
Step one is super simple- locate the central barrel structure and the 4 coil quadrants. There are "left" and "right" side parts, but its hard to put them together the wrong way. It's a remarkably well-designed kit!

Rubber band these all together nice and tight, and ensure that the rear of the gun is flush- the back of the quadrants should all be at the same level.

Like the Volcano Cannons, these things are HUGE!

After that assembly has dried, you will want to install a pin right in the middle of the barrel assembly to tie it in to the rest of the gun housing. Alignment is critical here, as a targeting array bit will go in this small depression. I found the best way to line it all up was to match it to the tiny lip on this recess. That way, a good fit is assured.

I installed another pin in the rear of the gun in order to attach the "Reaction Chamber." Lots of thick resin areas, so you have options where to drill. I ended up drilling into a small area towards the top of the gun. After ensuring that your pins will fit, epoxy and clamp the parts together.

After curing, the next step is more of the same- Attach bits to other bits!
The first thing you want to do is attach cabling to the Reaction Chamber. These will do a majority of their alignment themselves. Your job will be making sure that they stay relatively square to where they attach. Fortunately, the main casing of the gun has a number of large flat areas running parallel to the part, so we've plenty of reference! Clamp these in tightly (remember to put some padding on your clamp's jaws!), then double and triple check the alignment. This will be the last chance to do so!!

At this point you can attach two other smaller detail bits- a "maintenance hatch" at the back, then the barrel of the weapon at the tip. Clamp tightly and set aside to cure.

===================================

Next detail bit- the canisters that are ubiquitous on Imperial plasma weaponry. I don't know what they do, but they look good doing it!

You will want to first glue the canisters to the "Canister Connector" (yes, that's what they call it =/ ). I took care of these while I was still mucking about with the larger parts of the cannon. Make sure these are all correctly lined up with each other before letting it cure.

The canister connector is attached differently depending on what side you want it to be on the Warlord. Just like the armor plates on the Volcano Cannon, you have to make a decision. I'm putting this on the left arm, so the canisters stick out on the left!
Glue, clamp, cure.

Now we are down to the final few detail pieces. The most difficult of these will be the large bundled cables leading from the main body of the gun to the wires we installed in the previous step, so let’s take care of that first!

The fat end of the part will fit in first, and it is through this dry fit that you’ll be able to figure out any bending you might need to do to the wires. The usual hot water trick will do wonders here, softening the resin to a point that it bends like putty!
I didn’t need to mess with bending for my particular casts. With a modicum of effort, I was able to dry fit everything very tightly together. I could have even gotten away with no glue!

Attach the targeting array (remember that cutout?), then the braces on top of the main coils. The array doesn’t really need much clamping, however the bracing pipes need to be rubber banded so that they dry right. As always, check the alignment before setting the gun aside to dry fully.

And there you have it- One big dumb plasma!
Next time, Shoulders!

Was worried for a second, thought "jeez, a year to start painting, this is a long project!", then realised it's a couple days to the end of the year...doh.

Psychostick is awesome.

Working on writing up stuff- Takes a lot of time, but hopefully one soonish!?

In the meantime, have a Dakka tradition: a retrospective of the past year!

======================

January

First big project of the year was an Admech force of quite an unusual color!
Not only was it the first purple army I've ever painted, but it was also the first time I used the new GW technical paints. Overal, Im thrilled with how the bases came out. Very rusty and dusty, exactly what the client was looking for!!

And then there was a quick entry into the Nerdcademy awards- I think I finished this guy the day the contest ended, so squeaked him in just under the deadline! The theme was simply "No, Nooo, NOOOO!!", so I pictured a hapless grot just about to be squished beneath the toe of a Warlord Titan. Second time around, I think I should have used a smaller titan and done more of a leg. I dont think its quite clear exactly what the thing in the air is.

Love the expression of confusion on the grot's face, though!

February

February started with a pair of Imperial models...

A Callidus Assassin (love this model ):

And a Wolf Lord on a bike:

... and suddenly devolved into a horde of space elves.

March

The Eldar had some heavy artillery come in for the beginning of march. Every single piece magnetized!

And a Vyper!

Midway through the month, I got a giant package of Kingdom Death stuff in the mail! (I may have a small problem, as this stack is getting even larger )

And the month finished with a massive group of Slaaneshi Daemons!

By now, Adepticon was fast approaching, and I had some mini projects for my own armies that I wanted to get done!
Namely a pair of Dreads (including a Dorito!)

And a Techmarine with Servitors!

April

ADEPTICON!!

As always, fun times!

After the con, I set to work on some new DnD minis for a campaign I fell into.

I also did a few quick little Dwarf minis for a friend of mine.

Lastly, a pair of Krootseers on Jetbikes! Lots was learned with sculpting the cloaks on these.

May

May started with a couple space wolves. A single OOP scout, and Ulfric!

I also got into Guildball, and slapped some paint on a few of my Alchemist minis.

With the end of May, I somehow went and got myself a job, screwing up my perfect record of unemployment

June-July
June and July were a particularly crazy point in my life. Not only was I struggling to balance new work and my commissions, but I also applied for a painting position at Privateer Press, and GOT AN INTERVIEW!

Sadly it was not to be, but instead laid the groundwork for the future...

It was at this point, I decided to go to GenCon with On The Lamb, and painted up a few of their newest display minis

August

In August I completed another insane army concept from RiTides: The Aporkalypse!

August also saw my first GenCon- and it would have been awesome were it not for a sudden bout of strep throat (thats why there arent any pics here) :/
Got to meet a lot of new people, and WOW was there a lot of stuff! Definitely worth a return trip!

And lastly, late in the month I got a pair of Things knocked out for good ol Gitsplitta's Halloween army!

September

Masons! Beautiful Bright blues and metals! (and an ADORABLE armadillo!)

I also painted up a character for another member of our DnD group. (come to think of it, I owe this guy another miniature or two, haha )

October

October was a month of whites and blacks... Infinity!!

Got a few chances to paint bright colors as well, with Nordic Taskforce Vikinger!

Another first- I went to Reapercon and then got an award!!

November

Painting began to slow with the changing of the seasons, and I painted up a Wolf Lord and a couple Wulfen.

Gears also changed over to full Titan production!!

December

I got a car, Titan gets built!!

======================

In 2016 this thread has seen seen:
More than 162 models painted!!! (2015 had over 170)
31+ Pages (2015 had 33+ )
930+ Posts (Last year we had more than 990! )
3 conventions!
1 car!
>8 GB of photos (wip and otherwise!) (last year was only 5 gigs!)
The continued insane babbling of a madman (Hey look, something stayed the same! )

======================

So a little slowdown since last year, but I think that things have actually picked up since starting work!! THings can only get crazier...

So thank you one and all for continuing to follow and encourage me for another year. Hope 2017 is a great year for all of you!

@brushcommando: Thank you! Heh, Titan is on the bench now (and I even did some painting in the head's interior!), so you guys will DEFINITELY be seeing things happen with him this year! Goal is to have him done for Adepticon, so I have a little less than 3 months to make the magic happen!

@WM: I've already resigned to the fact that my numbers will crash cause of this thing
Maybe this year should be on a points system... Id be at, what... 3k after the Titan?

@RiTides: The bacon was a fun project... Glad that you ended up loving them!

@dstein: Thanks, Dave!!

@SL: Good or bad, this year is gonna be Titanic

===============

So I'm waiting on a few minor supplies for the Titan (in particular, some square pins for the arm-swaps), so I took to a bit of painting and assembly.

First painted mini of the year is a Guildball figure- Second Season captain of the Brewer's guild, Esters!

I also got the standing Princeps painted up. This poor guy has really seen some bad times. Scarred up nasty face, one arm... (Hope he was left handed!) I tried to paint the "clipboard" he has as some sort of iPad-esque Dataslate with some vague graphics. Wonder how he deals with the touchscreen...

The base is a bit from the Adepticon swag bag some years ago. Laser cut cardboard, I think it was. Wouldn't be able to tell you the company, though! It's an interesting product... I much prefer resin basing for my scenic stuff, but this was handy as a quick and dirty solution.

On the building side of things, I've been messing with some Infinity and Hordes minis for future projects.

Lots to do, lots to do!!

Still working on the next update (I keep getting distracted by actually BUILDING the damned thing, haha), but Im pleased to report that I got some brass in from dsteingrass (again, thanks a MILLION), and the arms are pinned, sanded, and all working beautifully!

In the mean time, and I know im killing some of you guys by teasing Titan with no pics , but I've another mini to show!
This is Rayna from Red Panda Miniatures. Fun little line started by a friend of mine.

Technically this should be part of last year's progress, as she was done before Christmas hit- I just wanted to make sure that my Secret Santa recipient got her in the mail before revealing it... Ah well, Gotta pad this year's numbers somehow!

Ill try to have some Titan footage for next time!

Warlord Part 12: [Insert Shoulder-based Pun Here]

With the primary weapons complete, it's time to move to the secondaries. For this particular warlord, we are looking at Carapace Laser Blasters!

The main body is a simple affair, and is constructed similar to the Volcano Cannon. After initial cleaning of the chunks of sprue, I chose to put a big pin in the middle of the parts for that extra bit of structure.

The guns have three barrels each, and assembly is simple as they are all the same part, simply rotated. I had to bend a couple of my barrels just a bit, as they warped during casting/shipping. Just a simple dip in hot water.
I found that even though the barrels are the same, they ended up fitting into the main housing -just- a tiny bit differently. Just depending how the sprue was cut from it, how the tab was cast, how you sanded it, the tiny imperfections in bending warped barrels... All these add to make the fit just a smidgen different for each one. Additionally, I tended to drill just slightly off-center for pins, so each barrel only really fit perfectly in one spot. To this end, I labeled each barrel and its corresponding hole.

Be sure that the barrels are parallel with each other and that they are all the same length, and dont forget the little triangular spacer at the very end of the assembly. This fits into several tabs on the gun barrels.

Once cured, you'll want to pin it to the shoulder mount. When gluing this particular part, I propped the gun barrels in a slightly elevated position to give the model a bit of movement. You can make this as extreme or as sedate as you wish- the joint will pretty much tell you how far you can go with it.

Next step is to dress up the gun with details. The more that you angled the guns, the more you'll need to bend the side tubing. Since they're so thin, a quick dip in hot water will make them nice and flexible. The piston is even simpler than that, as it's just another case of cutting it to fit!

The last thing we want to do is make these swappable. Just a little bit of future proofing, plus, what's cooler than being able to aim at where you're shooting!?
Making these weapons swappable is easy, as it's just a case of putting a pair of 1/4 inch magnets in the gun mount as well as the shoulder. This'll make it sit tightly to the rest of the warlord, but still be able to rotate a little.

Next time- Its all starting to come together now... Let's build a head!

These actually are better modeled than the Reaver's las-blaster. A lot more detail. I'll have to compare them to mine to see how the size fares. Be interesting if someone used these to out fit their Reaver.

Hehehe, yes, yes... it really is further along than the project logs indicate- All assembly is in fact done!

The limiting factor of the project logs is really my own laziness- I want to have them long and informative, but that takes time... Time that I could do assembling!

That said, I'll try to pick up the pace on updates. Planning overall primer today, so larger paint WIP pics are coming!

WM is correct about the armor plates, though- Those will all get painted up separate for ease of painting.

Warlord Part 13: A Head of the Game

Predictable head joke is predictable, haha...

Anyways!

This particular head variant- the Mars-Beta Pattern- I believe was from a Warhammer World Open Day. Of the three heads I recall seeing for the kit, I think this is my favorite. It's not the big ugly furnace head, nor is it the stock up-scaled Knight head.

I always imagined that the Warlord kit would have a much more spacious and impressive bridge area. And with more staff, too! Instead we have a control room not much bigger than the Warhound's, and with the same number of staff. It's a bit weird how similar they are... I'd almost swear that the Princeps model is the same as well!

Assembly is pretty straight-forward, however like many other parts of this build it was time consuming. I plan on painting the full interior (because I'm a glutton for punishment!), so I ended up building three main subassemblies- the lower faceplate, the sides/neck, and the top plate of the head. The latter will be magnetized so that you can look inside. A carapace armor plate sits above the head, preventing the "top" of the head from being easily removed, so I'll be magnetizing the head to the body as well.

I started by gluing the two halves of the faceplate together, then used the interior floor to align the plates. Rubber band them tightly together and let it cure. Just be sure that your glue doesn't ooze out and glue the floor as well!

The back of the head is a bit more complex, as it's 4 pieces which make up part of a box. Again, we are going to use the rest of the assembly to align the parts. Everything more or less locates to each other with tabs, making our job even easier. I found it helpful to stuff a bit of wadded up tissue paper into the head to act as positive pressure, pressing the walls of the head outward against the rubber band. This ensures that the walls don't squish inwards and dry incorrectly.

After the walls were glued to the floor (remember, NOT the face!), I put the top of the head on in order to align the walls vertically. Strap all this together and let cure.

Once that's set, glue on the cables. You may need to bend these a bit, but in my case, I didn't find it necessary. I inserted a small pin into where the cable connected vertically to the rest of the head. The "cheeks," on the other hand, had a tab that seemed to locate pretty well on its own. Glue it, Clamp it, Band it, and let cure.

==================================

At this point you should be left with the three sub assemblies. Take this time to paint up the interior, then once that's set and done, move on to the next phase of the project

========================================

So bit of an extra for you guys... Its a quick pic, and mind that Im a bit freakishly tall, but here is a scale shot with me next to the big guy's skeleton.

(OoooOOoooOOooohh.... Its black now... wonder what that means )

So the armor has begun!!

Completely new way to paint white, mostly custom mixes of white and some P3 colors. The Privateer colors really do airbrush wonderfully. Never have had a problem thinning them and getting smooth blends.

A little difficult to see on the photos (white is a bear to photograph!), but it fades to a pale gray-blue. Really exciting to see paint finally going on this

Post by: Ramos Asura

Yes indeedy. In fact, a few of the largest pieces of white armor are getting black detailing on them, so there will be even less white than shown in that picture!

I'd guess we're looking at around a quarter to a third of the armor actually staying white. The rest is destined for black!

Not pictured- Several GIANT pieces of shin armor!

EDIT:

Suppose I can post up my color scheme thoughts...
I took the image from the front of the Warlord instruction manual, then threw it in photoshop to make it into a line drawing. Print out on red paper (because Im too lazy to change it in my printer), and scribble in with a white and black pencil.

Overall, I think we've settled on this, save for adding some extra black to the side gun armor. Currently Im doing all the complex masking necessary for spraying black over the white pieces... Lotsa stripes!

Funnily enough I use P3 for my airbrush as well, though originally that was for economy, as I do a lot of prop painting with it. Which is almost as paint intensive as painting a fakking titan

White looks tasty!

Waughghghghgghhhhhh!!!
THERE IS SO MUCH DAMN ARMOR ON THIS THING!!!

As it stands, all of these plates have the primary armor colors done. The blends don't show up terribly well on camera (as usual), plus the messy edges of unpainted trim sorta blur the whole thing together.

I don't have a day off until friday, so I think ill be waiting till then to spray the main body metal (that's gonna be a LOT of metal!!!!) In the meantime, I think I'm gonna start on the many, MANY pieces of trim!

Lacking the ability to make white decals, I'vegone and started on the long road to detailing this beast...

I did have one minor case of paint pulling away with the tape... Right in the middle of a white kneecap
Well, guess this thing is getting a little battle damage after all!!

====================

@moonpie: Cheers, boss!

@EDC Many thanks!! Its been a heck of a journey so far, and I'm glad to have you guys aboard and following along!

@Savage: P3 thins so damn nice.... It really is a dream to spray

@Archer: Hehe... Why stop at painting it on? Im sure I could fir a real on on there the thing is so damn big! Wonder if I could get Nerd to FedEx me one...

Actually, the only magnets on this guy will be the head and the armor plates on the Laser Blasters. Everything else is so huge that it relies on pins and gravity itself!

So I've been quiet primarily due to no real interesting updates. Big guy is big, and with my 9-5 job, I dont have as much time to paint as I'd like! Not to mention that the biggest step right now is the quintillion miles of golden trim. So far I've got the base of the trip blacked out- not so necessary for the black plates, but the white had to go. This does start to make everything start coming together, though.

Since last update, I've sprayed the base silvers on as well. The light really blows out the color blend, but theres a nice blue-gray tint to the shadows. I'm going to paint a number of details gold on these, then spray a number of ink washes over the whole thing. That should get the recesses shaded and give everything a nice oily look. Touch that up with a final silver highlight and scratches ala nerdfest, and I think we'll be looking good!

The head is getting some love as well. Thats been most of today's work. Lots of little buttons and screens to paint and bring some color to the parts, plus the crew in colors similar to the Warhound's.

Soooo.... yeah!! Month and a half...

I think I got this!

I thought GW/BL changed things up, and most Princeps of the Big Boys were floating in amniotic tanks?

Did they change that up again?

Anyway - looking great so far!

This predominantly Black/White scheme is going to end up looking fantastic astride the battlefield!

Left hand of darkness.... very doable, as the big guy is built to be totally swappable. Won't be able to run tenabre plus plasma in the current configuration. Both are on the left arm, currently on the left arm

Though still... very doable... and I'm liking how it's sounding

I had this sorta thought as well... I think that it would make for a fantastic conversion. Especially if you lit it up from underneath!!! Aughhh... thatd be beautiful!

If they do indeed have an alternate head with this style, we're in luck! This big guy is having his head magnetized, so we can totally swap it out should we feel the need

@Lorek: Yes indeed!! The plan is to have this guy all kitted out and delivered at the event. WM's in the Titanicus game, apparently, so looks like "Hells Daughter" will be drawing some blood on her first outing!!

@Zerg: The trim is less difficult than it is time consuming! Maaaaaan does it take a while to get everything base coated... Im hoping that it doesn't take as long to wash them. The black I can be ever so slightly more messy with, but the white needs a light touch...

@Cam: Thanks!! You aren't too far off, actually... I started with a full pot of the Vallejo Old Gold and now Im down to about 1/6 of a bottle... Very very likely the whole bottle will be gone by the end of this...

@EDC: Thanks!!

@SL: Thanks, boss! Always need that motivation

Assembly is done for now. Its all in subassemblies right now.

Currently the plan is in two parts. Part one is all these armor plates, Part 2 is the metals and guns and such, which at this stage need to be sprayed with wash (slated for Thursday). After both elements are complete, I can combine them and start final assembly.

Started washing the parts last night, and it shouldn't take nearly as long as basing the golds. Got all 8 toe pistons single washed. Love this color~

Busy busy busy!~
Time is short and its crunch time, so here is a quick update on painting progress!

Update the first part: THE DOOR!

Did a quick bit of freehand/decal work on the bridge door, then weathered it down a bit.

Speaking of the head, I took care of the remaining details:

I figured out the gold as well. Took a little experimentation on the fly, but I think it's working out pretty well. The top bit is after the first wash of Strong Tone, the bottom is what happens with a wash of Soft Tone after that.

I actually went another layer of Strong Tone after this, and the result is a rather nice and rich bronzey color... Like this!

Last bit of update:
Putting gold on the metal bitz in preparation for spraying them with an ink wash.

So yeah!!
PAINTING!!!

(Pic stolen from this blog's review of the three: http://anatolisgameroom.blogspot.com/2012/08/army-painter-warpaints-inks-review.html)

These are brilliant inks/washes that are the same or better than the old GeeDub washes that revolutionized painting for a lot of people. And IMO far superior to the current Citadel stuff.

Dark = Badab Black
Strong = Devlan Mud
Soft = Gryphonne Sepia(-ish)

I use Dark Tone constantly, the stuff is delicious, well priced, and the dropper bottle means you don't get to experience the existential crisis of spilling a brand new bottle of $$$ Dub wash. Which maybe some people are all about

You don't say? As an ink, do you have to water them down to create a wash? Or can you apply them direct like the old GW washes?

Rollin' All Ones --- A Midsummers Night's Update (7-30-21) @ 2017/02/24 22:41:17

Post by: Ramos Asura

Boss has it exactly right. Army painter washes!

The dropper bottles make it more convenient than the GW ones and more importantly they are a damn near exact match to the old GW washes. I was particularly excited to learn of the Devlan Mud equivalent, Strong Tone, because I put that crap on EVERYTHING! This gold effect is one of my biggest uses of the product, and I've not been able to replicate it with any other paints after GW swapped to the new grossness.

Plus, there is the added fact that these things are like 3 bucks and change for a bottle, compared to the 4-5 that GW charge, and you get MORE!

@Cam: You can get big tins of the quickshade, and the colors are more or less what these are. The paint is completely different, though, as the bottles are acrylic wash, whereas the tins are closer to a polyurethane "dip". It's a thick gloss varnish base with pigment in it.
Im not a big fan of dipping, but I've seen it done to an ok degree. Certainly makes things quicker... I'll just stick with these more traditional washes.

@wyfox: Even though these say "ink", they are more like the old GW washes in consistency and color. Just slap em on as you would any other

So much Goooooooold~~~

At this stage, I have about half of the armor plates done. Minor touch-ups here and there where I was a little too overzealous with the trim colors, but after the edge highlight they are DONE!!

On the metal side of things, I did some !!!SCIENCE!!!, and experimented with the concept of spraying the whole thing down with an ink wash...

Results are... eh... Inconclusive, but I dont think I have time to experiment more.
Overall, the tint that I get is nice and certain recesses get shaded well, but I keep getting a slight white haze where the wash pools. I guess its from the varnish drying funny or something, I dunno... You can see it underneath the doors- a fine white line.

I think Ill just go like how I did the Warhound and hit it with a few shades out of the airbrush. I still have the Minitaire ghost tints floating around here somewhere...

3 weeks to go before due date...

Yikes.

The white is actually the water/varnish pooling and drying on top of the pigment. I've had the same happen when adding water to washes, the water takes longer to dry than the wash floats on top and leaves it white

@Rolsheen: That's what that is?? Fascinating... I wonder if adding something to speed the drying (alcohol?) might help...?
In any case, that's awesome to know! Wish I had some more time to play with my wash spray idea more... Maybe after AC!

@SL: I can run this during the KNight Fight, right?

@Gits: Thank you!!

@Shrapnelsmile: There is a certain quaintness about the old kit... I seem to always end up using them for color tests or fodder for my Orks... Really a versatile old kit!

@Lorek: Heh, thanks. As much of a pain as the white is to paint, I really love how it's been turning out! Just wait till she's all together!

=============

So a minor break from gold to do some heavy airbrushing!
I got in to the metal areas and hit them with a few inks and shades to give the metal an oily appearance, especially on the pistons.

I then went ahead and sprayed the head!

Less than 20 days!!

==========================

Getting closer and closer to final assembly!
I glossed the armor plates (successfully on the porch, despite the blizzard that rolled through town ), and everything is nearly complete!

I finished the painting on the legs, so started gluing on the first layer of armor- Toe pistons and plates! I fear its gonna be a tight fit on the left leg... I may have gone for a slightly overly-dynamic pose... Gonna be a real squeeze!!

Heres how the right foot is looking:

And some close-ups of the Big Dumb Plasma:

=============

@SL: Hope this works in the interim! Still a lot of work to do!!
(And shhh... the tattoo is supposed to be a surprise for Gits!!!)

It is a 'God Machine' After all so Dramatic is called for.

I had some issues getting the shin plates on the Reaver in the right place due to the pose I choose ( not that dynamic either ).

At least you'll have one Warlord under your belt when finished so the next 4 or 5 should come easier.

Heyas, guys! Micro update to say Im back in town, yadda yadda yadda...

Was a fantastic convention with great people (even SL ) Played some games, bought WAAAAAY too much stuff, ate a lot of awesome food.

I'll get something more of a proper update in the works. I've still about 150+ pictures of the Warlord to sift through and make look presentable. I unfortunately could only get shots of her in the Hotel room, but hopefully that works out well enough!

In the mean time, I still gotta go to the regular 9-5 job.... bleeeeghg!

Apologies in advance for the peculiar aspect ratio on these. I was using a new camera app on my phone and didnt realize how "rectangular" it made everything

She's a stunner. My particular favourite details are the eyes and the rear hatch (and possibly the plasma glow). Is it me or does the light catch the edge of the transfers on the right kneepad though? Irrespective, an extraordinary piece of work. Weirdly, without another mini for scale, you could be fooled into thinking it's an Epic titan ( I mean that in a really, really good way) - it's so crisp and clean.

Nicely done Ramos! she really is a massive unit isn't she, you did a brilliant job considering the time you needed to have her finished by and there is so much detail you seriously could spend 12 months doing the details justice, I know what it's like with the reaver and she's smaller!!

Thanks for the kind words, everyone

@graven: Yeeeeah, I had some minor issues with that bit of the decals. The clear coat underneath seems to have warped a little bit... Maybe oil from the resin leaching out? Hopefully thats the only issue the big girl has...
Seems to only be noticeable in bright light... And in super close-up pics!!

@moonpie: Wow, thank you! Very kind to say
Gotta say, though... Were I to do a project like this again, there are a few elements I say the others utilize that I would want to totally use. LED lights and a bluetooth speaker!!

Anyways, in the queue are a few Guildball figs, a pair of Infinity armies, some DnD minis... I've got a good mix of stuff coming down the pipe

And hey, you may yet get to see it in person. After all, WM's gotta get some use out of it, and what better way than to bring it to the annual Titanicus games?

I still gotta do my AC recap... Hum, Ill try to hash something out here in the next coupla days.
Anyway, the Wardens do a better job than me as far as recaps go. Why dont ya go check out the recap page here?

Army of Infinity Pan-O

A Boba Fett for the same client:

A pair of new minis for On The Lamb:

Wow... So I kinda disappeared a while...

I think I actually hit a bit of burnout, so took some time off... Should be getting back to normal operations around here soon, though.

I finished up the Infinity stuff, and this was part of the reason I got so burned out- I ended up shipping these off really quick and didnt check my studio photos... This was a mistake!
As it turned out, most of my pictures were out of focus slightly!

Nothing I can do about it now, except move on and use an actual camera next time!

Also painted up a Boba Fett from Imperial Assault:

=========================

Next project on the desk is Cabrakan from Dark Age-
Fun little mini. Client asked for a base that gives the impression he was chained down and is breaking free, so I popped some small jewelry chain on him and his base.

===================

@Dave- Yes indeed- All the details on these guys are freehand in one way or another!

Oh hey... and anyone notice we got new orkmoticons?

Thanks, guys!

Yorkright: The reds are actually super simple- just a ton of layers! I think the real key to it is the darkest color I use for the base- Darkest is Burgundy Wine from Reaper- Its a suuuuper dark red. Adore the stuff!

=========================

So after some minor airbrush trouble, I spent most of the day working on Cabrakan-

I also was in a bit of an assembly kick, and got a future project built up. Its an infinity army (funnily enough, from a friend of the white/red army's owner), and is slated for a rather unique color scheme, but Ill get to that later!
