Hi everybody, and welcome to my newest log of insanity.

As I'm sure many of you have, I've been reading the Horus Heresy series, and as I'm sure many of you will agree, its an excellent series.

Now I've decided to devote my horde of FW marine Mks to the dark gods, and do the main protagonist forces of the Sons of Horus legion. I'll be doing them in the Sea green scheme, the sort of interim scheme between the Lunar Wolves and the Black Legion schemes, I think it will look striking on the tabletop, and more importantly to me be fun to paint and weather.

This is my first WIP model:

As I hope you can see, there is alot of Imperial fist casualties going on here, one because I think the yellow will look great as a spot colour/counterpoint and it sets them at the Siege of Terra, or just after when the Sons were chased into the eye.

I will be using the SW list, because its more competitive then the regular SM one (though we'll see what happens in 6th), plus I get to run terminators as troops, and since the SoH used them extensively, I think it fits.

*list removed

Any ideas on poses, themes, names, markings etc would be greatly appreciated.

Looks interesting. You must be very bold, very confident or very rich to try a new scheme on a FW figure!

Thanks gents

I've been a bit busy with a new uni entrance course I'm doing, and work, but I managed to cobble together this Sgt over the last couple of days. He took alot more time and fiddling around then I anticipated, the combination of various Mks of armour give a nice feel I think, and is something I can see happening during a protracted siege like the siege of Terra.

The arms are from the plastic CSM set, and are a nice analogue for Mk2 once your file off the extraneous detail.

I hope to have the first 5-10 men finished by the end of next week, but that may blow out due to my time being taken up by work/uni entrance course I started a couple of weeks ago.

I also wrote alittle bit of fluff while I should have been listening to a lecture:

"Yes. I was there, at the end.

I fought on the world that had cradled our race, where sky and earth touched, on the walls of a false gods hubris and conceit.

I watched as demi gods clawed and grappled, murdered and speared each other. I saw the fists of Dorn bleed and die, the angels of Sanguinius weeping tears of blood as they were cast from the heavens, the Khans barbarian hordes unhorsed by bolter fire.

I saw my brothers die, in ignominy, uncelebrated by an empire we spent 300 years forging in blood and battle.

But mostly I remember hearing the laughter of the uncaring gods as we failed, and Horus died, and the bitter taste of defeat like ash in my throat.

That was your glorious siege whelp, and damn you for making me speak of it"

- Captain Tyberadon 17th company, formerly Sons of Horus

Not sure in what context that would be delivered, maybe to a new recruit before they became the black legion or something.. .

Progress has been slow, but steady, getting into the meat and veg of any SM army now, the bolter carriers, or ablative wounds for you heavy and special weapons if you'd prefer.

Guy on the end is dropping his bolter *doh*

Nothing really exciting going on here, they just need alittle bit more work done to their bases and will have their bolters attached post paint.Still undecided on adding a chain bayonet or two, as I can't remember any actual references to them in the books.

As for paint, well it turns out I ordered 3 of the wrong colour . . . I ordered USMC tanker highlight, when it should have just been USMC tanker. Lesson learnt, so now I'll have to figure out a use for the highlight colour while I wait for the real paint to arrive, beacause I'm following the DPA tut on painting them I have no use for the highlight as a highlight

Cheers

Thankyou both very much, Dakka seems like a pretty hard nut to crack.

Maybe that will change once I paint something. . .

So heres all the completely assembled models before primer.

I hadn't realised until I took this pic that the contemptor and Sgt model were in such a similar pose, guess I'll have to add some more variety to the future models.

The basing was done with a mix of cork, crushed slate, glued down with superglue, before adding some secret weapons razor wire.

So more assembly of the rest of the squad to follow, and waiting for paint to arrive. . .

Cheers

Nah... takes a while for people to get interested in projects. Keep it up, man. If the painting is anything like the modelling (HAWT), you'll have a following soon enough!

Love the modelling, especially the bases! The chunky ground with the bits and pieces... it kinda reminds me of the Heresy model cover with the Luna Wolves on it. (forget the title at the moment...) I can imagine what this army will look like put together, and even better, on a base of some sort...

Yepp, the dakka crowd is playing hard to get. We're lurking gits by nature. I know what I am talking about, my P&M Thread here is thick with them. I am lucky if one in a hundred comments.

Well, this looks interesting but without something painted CnC will be a bit hard to procure. Paint and the games shall begin!

I'm really confident that you can pull off the same scheme as DPA I had a look through his thread and his painting skills are draw dropping.

Yeah Dakka members are mostly lurkers I also have the same issue as STC_LogisEngine just keep an eye on the number of views and you will get a gage for how many lurkers you have attracted.

Thanks very much for the comments guys, these noys got put on ice for a while due to the nids getting some love, but I put paint to model today and came up with this

As you can see, hes not as clean as DPA's SoH, I just couldn't get excited by that style of painting, hes in the middle of the seige of terra, there isn;t going to be time to reapply paint to chipping.

This is obviously still PIP.

Let me know what you think, and any suggestions you have

Damn, Sheep, this looks like a fantastic start to a fascinating project. I love the paint scheme, and the grittiness of the weathering/battle damage. I can practically smell the reek of Istvaan (sp?)

Great work on the scheme here, sheep! I wasn't sold on the sea green color at first, but it really looks great! I really like the complicated weathering that you use: grime, chipping, rust. Looks awesome!

The only thing that I'm confused about is that big red thing under his helmet. Is it a lens? Gem? Heraldry?

Keep up the great work!

Cheers mate, glad you find the painting so evocative, but I basing this army on the siege of Terra, hence the IF marines, they weren't at Istvaan unfortunately. This means I can get away with alot more Chaos iconography to jazz up the scheme abit.

So great to see someone that have the guts paint really dirty. Too many people are bent on painting so neat. Even when painting dirt, weathering, rust and what not, so often it turns out as neat dirt and neat weathering etc.
This on the other hand is a definite wow-experience.

And i'm so going to steal the thing there with the blue-ish heat discoloration on the multimelta. Truly awesome.

Hey Mr.Sheep!

You clearly got some nice painting skills. The weathering and detail work on your first contemp is really stunning, you managed to paint it very realistic. Really impressive how you managed to paint the armor and other parts of the model so "flat" and real.

I also like how you tend to details, all the bases and the models so faar got some cool poses and good bases. The last Contemp is an awesome conversion, kinda funny too hehe. So im gonna keep track on this blog, cant wait to see you build and paint up more models, gonna be an awesome army when its done!

The feet were weathered the same way as the rest of the model, Base, highlight, chip, oil, pigment. But then after it was sealed with matte varnish i went back over them with brown mud pigments thinned with white spirit, when that had dried I brushed lightly with a dry brush to blend the pigments a little more, and then sealed it again.

Exalting adds your thread to the exalter's "my exalted threads" list and if the thread gets lots of exalts, it'll appear in the public "top rated topics" list

Thanks. There's no metallic paint at all on the feet right? Were you tempted to use any metallic paint for the chips?

Theres no metallic paints on the feet, they may have caught a touch of astonomicon grey drybrush when I was finishing the base too.
I was tempted to add some to the battle damage, but if I had of stuffed it up I would have to repaint the whole model and I couldn't make myself.

Thanks Childe What can i spend my points on?

The pics of UK games day have gotten my creative juices bubbling. As usual FW have blown the mainstream GW releases out of the water, and the PH/HH marines are amazing. using this motivation, I managed for finish the first 5 infantry figures for the Sons.

As you can see I am continuing with the battle warn beaten to hell look of the marines, and persevering with the sea green scheme because I think the official FW scheme looks like gak.

FW have also changed the eye of horus they are using, these guys sport the updated one, and the original contemptor will be the odd one out with the old style. I am considering whether or not to pick up some of the decal, or continue with the freehanding of the symbols.

Each of the marines also has a chaos star of some type free handed onto their armour somewhere, though most of them got so battle damaged its hard to make them out.

It was my first attempt at using the airbrush to do this style of power weapon, and I must say I really like the effect. I would have preferred a purple, but I didn't have the right colours, and impatience won out.

Next is assembling the rest of the squad, and deciding what out of all the awesome FW goodies I want next!

I will begin accepting donations to the "Buy Aaron resin crack" fund immediately

Love the marines in this paint scheme. I was wondering how sea-green and battle-worn would look on the Sons themselves. They look really good.

Judging by these holiday pictures, Istvaan does not seem like a particularly relaxing place to visit for vacation!

"woaw ! Amazing ! er, hu ? The yellow dead body looks as "old" as the dreadnought itself, would it be that it was placed in its hand from the start ?!"

Not that the job was not wonderfully done, it's just that in my point of view, one of them should be less or more weathered than the other. I am no reference here (see my post count), this is just the feeling I had when discovering your piece of work.

Anyway, I still enjoy reading your blogs

Cheers for the comments guys

Childe: I had a hard on you could cut diamonds with all of yesterday looking at the pics from GD. If I ever need "inspiration" in the bedroom I'll tape a picture of Angron to the back of my girlfriends head
Look forward to seeing your IW, though at the rate you are painting your DS it may be a while lol.
Go on, you know you want to, I'll trade those million points in for resin

Colonel: I see where you are coming from there, it they ar both involved in the same siege, and have been for probably the same amount of time, so it stands to reason they'd be similarly weathered. That's my reasoning anyway

This stuff is gorgeous sheep, having recently bought imperial armour model masterclass I'm still a novice at all this weathering malarky, but I'm getting addicted very quickly, just looks so much more real.

Anyway, this thread is absolutely stunning, really perfect stuff your making here, looking forwards to more. (Also thank you for doing the sea green, I share your opinion that it looks way better.)

Really wonderful painting and you certainly have the battle worn look down, but these guys look as though they've rolled through a gravel pit as opposed to receiving battle damage and wear.

While I am loathe to offer any advice to a painter with skill, for my taste only, I would have limited the scratches and added more fading and "dusty" elements.

Sheep, those miniatures literally blew me away.

I'm all for shiny, full-on highlighting and shading style.. but your gritty, realistic style makes the models seem so much more convincing and lifelike - as if they were a still image taken in the heat of battle. I clicked on this thread expecting another fairly typical if well-painted army following the usual trend, then I saw the first painted pictures and my jaw literally dropped. Exalted and subscribed.

My advice is read a heap of tutorials, you will pick up a lot of grat techniques and see a lot of products that don't come from GW on the other hand the FW master lass books are some of the best out there and lay everything out in an easy to understand and follow manner.

That's for the crit, weathering is a great divider, some people like it some don't. Then there's the degrees between. I would never do weathering this heavily on a display model, becaus het eleven of scrutiny is so much higher. But for a table top army, where subtle shades, highlights, clippings and stealing would be overlooked heavy weathering stand out a lot more and attracts interest. That's my justification anyway

Just a quick post to show the next 5 marines PIP.

Cheers

Your wish is my command

Well its been a busy couple of painting days here at Casa De Sheep. I've managed to knock out the last of the tac squad, and their ride.

Obviously running a missile launcher and plasma gun gives the squad alot of versatility on the table and helps with those pesky terminators in 6th.

Next is their ride.

I used the deathwind launcher from the drop pod kit as a pre chaos havoc launcher, I think it look pretty brutal and alot better then the chaos dildo launcher.

A group shot of what I've completed for the 6 month challenge:

and a final group shot of all the SoH model completed so far:

Thanks for looking

The next guy completed for this army came together much more quickly then I anticipated, probably because I rushed him, and because I fell into the trap of over weathering him. I'm not unhappy with the results until I put the two completed dreads together and compare them, the first has a much more controlled application of chipping which I prefer the finish of.

Anyway, here's the pics: Completed Kheres Mortis Contemptor.

The finish is slightly darker on the armour too, which I'm not sure how it happened. I am happy with how the home made assault cannons fit with the stock FW body, and how the 3 pieces of hazard striping turned out, and frame the face and Eye of Horus.

Finally I have a pic of the IF marine about to be cockroached by Mr Mortis.

Again I think I may have over done the weathering slightly, but I am very happy with the yellow and the pose.

Unfortunately for the blog, and my painting, I will be taking a break. I'm leaving for a 10 day holiday to Bali on Saturday, followed by moving house 4 days after my return. I have finished the Harpy for my nids, and will put pics of it up in the meantime, but there might be a slightly longer pause til the next completed Sons make an appearance.

Til later.

Compared the normal dreds contemptors are frakking gymnasts! the hips are ball joints so are the ankles, though because of the greaves there's not much play sideways, but they come with 2 pairs of feet, flat and toes bent. Just google contemptor and you can see heaps of cool poses.

Some great paint work here, especially on my favorite Legion, I will personally be building them as Luna Wolves.

However I do have to point out, IMO, the weathering and ware is a bit excessive as far as the SoH are concerned, as portrayed in the books, when they are not fighting. Literally all they do is train and polish their armor, I don't think there is a single time where Loken is talking to Mersadie that he doesn't have out a jar of lapping powder and a cloth, polishing away.

Thanks for the comments and the grats guys, it was a really big surprise when I was checking my emails in Bali I can assure you

Progreen: I used USMC tank crew green, from the panzer aces range by. Vallejo and mixed it with astronomicon grey.

Brokksmson: I agree, if they were still loyalist, but they are fighting an extended campaign, namely the siege of terra, I think there may have been a lack of lapping powder and desire to keep their armour pristine at that point

In other news I have placed a big order with FW, but it will take a while to get to me, and I still have to move house, so hopefully I can get cracking on it when it gets here in 2 or 3 weeks, I can't wait

Firstly sheep I love your painting, and that you are named after New Zealand's 40 million benevolent fluff balls. Anyway with that second contempt or I feel that it is a bit rusty, like it has been spending time in the sewers, especially because of that greenish colour and the way the two mesh, also maybe the leg is slightly too high for my liking (who can say) I also feel that the posing is makes it look slightly too agile for a 6 meter odd heavy support unit, especially considering it is a dedicated ranged unit. Also what would the sergeant look like with the plume thing going like a Mohawk? It seems quite Cato Sicarus like at the moment. I hate to be so critical, so don't get me wrong, this is some of the best work I have ever seen, and I hope to see this on GW's website many more times to come! Subbed

Hey Sheep, firstly, excellent paint work and some fantastically weathered miniatures - the whole aesthetic is just great.

I'm starting a GC/HH army myself and am going to start with a tactical squad and Garviel Loken from SoH. I've been trying to find a paint scheme that really comes close to the colours given in the 1st Horus Heresy book from FW (Betrayal). The sea green/metallic green look fantastic but it seems difficult to accomplish. What do you think of:

1. Undercoat Chaos Black spray
2. Base coat Adeptus Battlegrey (I think it's been replaced by Mechanicum Standard Grey but this looks a little lighter)
3. Wash Nuln oil
4. Layer Mechanicum Standard Grey
5. Layer Administratum Grey
6. Drybrush Necron Compund
7. Edge highlight Runefang Steel
8. Glaze Waywatcher Green
9. Wash Biel Tan Green

I've tried it on one foot as a tester but it's hard to gauge whether it's going to work on a whole model. I like your colour scheme but would also like to try to get a bit more of a metallic feel to the colour without it looking like metal - as close to the images in the FW book as possible I guess. What do you and the rest of DakkaDakka think?

Thanks guys, I am really happy with this army, I have just been languishing a bit in the motivation department. . . .until now.

Stefan: I'm sorry mate, but I'm not actually very familiar with the new GW paints so I couldn't posibly advise you on which ones to use. Sorry for taking so long to respond too.

Squigsquasher: The bone/yellow bits are some of the pieces I have cast myself. the quality isn't as good as FW's so I use them mainly for terrain and basing.

Nemesor: I thought of it more like conserving his ammuntion lol. The mohawk idea isnt a bad one, however the art depicting the Sons/luna wolves has them with a horizontal crest, so that what i went with.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I promised some pics of the WIP Sons of Horus in my Tyranid Log, and I'm delivering.

Recently I was hanging out at my mate Johns place, and seeing the amazing work hes put into his FW city fight tiles (seen here @ The Painting Bunker/) our forces will eventually fight over this terrain, and seeing the superb work hes put into them it has spurred me on to start the sons again.

Now I've always been one of those people that eats desert before the main meal, and I tend to get carried away. So when the opportunity came up to buy a spartan I didn't even blink.

This thing is a beast. However the instructions, unlike most FW products, are lacking in the details. This lead to a colossal **** up on my part and I glued two section of track on the wrong way round. The lesson here people is to always dry fit you expensive FW models before committing glue to resin.

One thing I cant stand about the design of these Pre heresy heavy tank models is the tracks. There is no conceivable way that those things generate enough traction to move something that is supposed to weigh in excess of 100 tonnes. 240 pieces and 2.5 feet of 1.5x1.5mm plastic stripe later I had tracks that even if they might not actually work, at least look to me like they would.

After several choice words, a walk around the house to calm down, and a failed attempt to break the bonded pieces off (resulting only in snapped track sections), I came up with idea of adding track guards and assault launchers to cover up my mistake.

Now I've done it I wouldn't have it any other way. I think it just looks so tough. Like a M1A2 Abrams with the full TUSK upgrade. In that vein, I scratched up one of the command frames from apoc that came with my emperors fist tank company, and stole the SM sensor suite to make a remote weapons unit. I mounted the Hunter killer and a multimelta from the FW Pre-heresy heavy weapons pack onto it.
This was then magnetised into the top plate for the heavy bolters.

I should also mention that I magnetised Quad lasers, and their mounts for ease of transport and pose ability. An interesting thing to note is that 2x 3mm/1mm magnets fit perfectly in the holes the lascannons are supposed to mount too. I had to get alittle more creative with the sponson mounts though.

All in all I cant wait to paint this beast, and expect to have it finished soon.

I should also post this, because it boggles the mind.

Almost 3/4 of a kilo, or a pound and a half to my American friends. Heavy support indeed!

Thanks.

That looks great. And your friend's cityfight tiles are amazing. I was looking at that same toy crane myself not so long ago, but he has done a much better job on it than I would have. His board is going to look fantastic, especially when you both have your armies on there.

A: Do you still plan on running these guys under the SW codex or are you just gonna go with CSM?

B: What loadout are you going to have the kheres contemptor "count as"? Pair of autocannons or are you gonna actually run it as a contemptor with kheres assault cannon/missile rack? If you go with #2 I would absolutely toss that thing in a drop pod; 12 assault cannon shots plus whatever the missile rack's profile is (is it just a typhoon ML, like on the landspeeder, or something special??)

Either way its dirty as hell in game man. I've always loved the look of a contemptor with a pair of kheres and you've really made it "pop" with the paintjob/creative posing. Kudos for sure

A: I'm actually thinking of running multiple codexes and just doing a core of models I can use in all. I want to do deathwing, SW, BA, CSM, and regular SM at various times. Plus the 30k gaming too.

B: We are lucky atm in that FW is getting run at alot more local tournaments, so I was just going to run it as a contemptor w/twin ass cannons A drop pods not such a bad idea.

Hi everybody.

I've been working pretty constantly on this, and I have to say, I'm in love. It may have been a dog to put together, but shes a beauty queen now. A battered and chipped one.

I incorporated a piece of iconography from the Horus Heresy Betrayal book, the one that looks like an upside down sunrise. According to the book this was displayed by some of the elite formations of the SoH, and considering the rarity and tactical nature of the Spartan I thought it was appropriate.

I tried the technique of Object source lighting (OSL) for the first time of this model too. I used blue to compliment the power sword colour I had already used on the Sgt previously.

The side shot show the makings I put on the doors, Unfortunately the XVI numerals I painted at the top of the door were covered by the mud. Freehanding all the symbols and numbers is a real pain in the ass, but the silver lining is not having to worry about decal film .

Rear shot, I just love the size of this power plant I'm also really happy with the treads, adding the strips may have been a ball ache but it has improved the character of the tracks immeasurably IMHO.

Top down shot, showing off the hazard stripe. The justification for the amount of stripes on the engine grill is to warn dopey marine crew wearing a tonne and a half of armour not to step on the grilles.

Finally a scale shot, this is one big mamma jamma.

Thanks for looking. Let me know what you think, and what you think I should do next.

Wow. That truly is an incredible piece of painting and modelling. I think you can also see massive improvement between the two tanks, so very well done. The OSL is incredible, the weathering wuthering , And the amount the freehand has come on is mind-blowing. May Imperial Fists quail before you!

Next - A unit of the Justaerin!

Hello sheep, loving the project ours is very similar , though not as advanced as yours yet , gotta say am loving the colour? May try experimenting with something similar myself and can't seem to be making the dark colours for sons of Horus work was very much against the lighter shade to start with but you've defiantly pulled it off your models are excellent.

Logan: steal away mate

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Hey all.

Since finishing the spartan its been nice basking in the afterglow of the internets, but progress must continue, and the sons need someone to lead them.

I want to do a terminator heavy force, and to get them to count as troops in normal games of 40k, I need deathwing, or wolf guard. I've already done a wolfguard army, and Dark Angels just got a new book. So DAs it is. I'll obviously do a Belial conversion later (maybe a counts as Abbadon? Maybe I should do it soon, so I can be the first guy?) but Azreal seems like the most versatile choice, since he unlocks both ravenwing (jetbikes?) and deathwing.

The current plan is:
Azreal
dude with banner of devestation
30x tac marines
5-10 deathwing
3-6 ravenwing
dreads
maybe a predator.

But I also want the army to be able to be folded into any codex that catches my fancy. Ie Chaos. So some for though will have to be put into construction of the terminators so that they can cross codexes easily.

Anyway, enough dribbling from my brain. Onto the pics.

Front:

Continuing the theme of mixing armour mk's, the legs arms and left shoulder are mk4, the torso head and right shoulder are mk3. The little kilt, from the SM command sprue I think, is a nod to the Catphraci terminators, and will be painted in a dark red. The left hand is plastic, whilst the right is resin, and in some kind of weird FW/GW disparity, they are completely different sizes. I didn't realise this before I glued them to the sword hilt. Obviously I will run him as a Preator with Paragon blade (GL terminator force sword) in 30k, cause that's what everyone else seems too.

Left side:

This angle shows the flow of the pose a bit better, I was trying to capture a mid-underhand swing, and the momentum affecting the slung combi bolter. He has been pinned numerous (9) times, with one in each shoulder, elbow, wrist hand/sword (one piece of 1.6mm brass rod), right knee and left foot.

Back:

This show the sling and the swing on the bolter a bit better, I tried to 30k up the plasma gun a bit, whilst still retaining the mastercrafted look. Some of the back pack mounting had to be removed to aid the flow of the sling, but its covered anyway, if its too noticeable I'll resculpt it before priming. For tournament WYSIWYG purposes he also has a bolt pistol, frag and krak to cover almost any load out. The little shield can count as a refractor field. I also added a pouch to the holster of the Bolt pistol, to cover up the ugly nothingness of the design.

I actually quite enjoyed putting this guys together, and as the first character I wanted to make him stand out. I'm thinking a white helmet, red plume as a nod to this guy being a terran luna wolf veteran, I will ofcourse make up some fluff to explain away why he wasn't purged on Istvaan 3.

Thanks for looking, anything you have to contribute to the list, ideas on paint, or what you think I did wrong I'd love to hear them.

Cheers

Sheep

Thanks mate, if I was being super critical i would say that the kilt isn't swinging enough.

But i'm happy enough to move on to the detailing stage. Studs and buckle for the sling, studs on the right greave and something else TBD. He just doesn't look commandery enough for me atm.

Thanks very much guys I'm glad you're liking my progress as much as I am.

I've added a secondary plasticard layer to the front of the sling to add some detail to an area that I though was looking more like a beauty pageant contestants sash then a sling.

Before anyone asks how it works, I have no idea, its just for looks.

The only conceivable problem (besides the functionality) I have with this design, is the size of the buckle. I may cut it off, and redo it in pure GS. The only thing stopping me is that I used polycement to glue it down, and a buckle would need to be robust enough to be manipulated by someone wearing power armour gloves.

These are the thoughts that keep me up at night. Any input from the brains trust?

Love the weathering work on the Spartan, and if I ever get one, I'm stealing your track idea. Great, great addition to the model IMO.

With your weathering, and you using pretty standard sponge weathering or something else? It looks really great, so I'd like to use (see: steal) the technique myself.

I use an airbrush to lay down my colours, plus the mix colour I'm using, astronomicon grey is a very blue grey.
Apart from that, I use a grey primer.

You will wash the blue colour out of the paint if you use the USMC tankcrew highlight as a highlight colour too.

I'm sorry I can't be more help.

Post by: Sheep

Thanks guys It was a really nice surprise to wake up too.

Ilove40k: The chipping is done with a sponge, and the highlight colour and chardon granite. The streaks and rust are oil paints and FW weathering pigments.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well its been a while. Things have slowed down due to the start of the uni year and the running around that is involved in that, I'm expecting it to be a very slow year of hobby until the holidays because of the amount of time I'll have to put into my degree.

However, I have some more progress to show:

Firstly, the model that I am most happy with so far, Bannerman "TBD":

Continuing the mixing of the Mks of armour, I also added one of the FW bionic arms from the character upgrade set they released. The banner is the standard from the SM command squad, with various purity seals which I have used to cover up an abortive attempt at damaging the standard.

Betrayal say the Sons used to gild the skulls of worthy opponents, this is the first time I have added skulls to a model in the SoH force, though they should be making more of an appearance from now on.

Secondly, a Sgt for the new squad, armed identically to the previous one, he does however have a bionic arm.

Next we have some troopers, one of which will have a plasma gun.

And finally we come to something different, I have been trying to figure out how to make my assault marines stand out, and didn't want to go with the named company of black armoured marines. So I decided that my assault marines will be a unit of World Eaters seconded to the Sons, or simply picked up in the heat of battle. In this way I can explain why they just get thrown out in the thick of the fighting, with no regards to casualties (I'm pretty terrible at keeping assault units alive) as the SoH commander simply doesn't care.

I need to buy some more of the FW chainaxes, and maybe one of the new sets with the pistols before I can finish this squad.

Thanks for looking.

Hello mate.. I was wondering when I was going to see an update. You have obviously been tinkering away quietly in the back ground

Looking forward to seeing some paint on these puppies. Where are you gonna put the hazard stripes? lol!

On the skulls front I have added one on my contemptor for exactly the same reasons as you... its nice to follow the fluff. Just a quick question... I am noticing you use a few bits in cast in a yellow material. Have you made some of your own moulds for specific components? Just curious as they look pretty good quality.

Sheep. I have been following your adventures across many Forums, and i am still struck everytime i see you models. Even on fricking GW site

I'v been thinking alot about starting SoH, and especially making them battle weary from either Siege of Terra, or the Slaughter on Istvaan, and you have cemented in my mind that SoH are the way to go.

But i would bedg a favour, i have trawled through your posts on alot of forums to find your painting recipe. Iv seen your List of paints on this forum, but i was wondering if i could coax a little more detail from your talented self?

If you want to keep it to yourself bro, power to you and i totally get that, but i would like to enforce the fact that i wont be able to replicate it to the same effect haha.

Also, i read someplace (My mind withers now) that you got most of the weathering tips originally from the Imperial Armour Book, is that true, and if so, hwo helpful did you find them, any tips for an aspiring SoH?

Cheers man, and a massive well done on controlling the best looking Sons of Horus Force on the internet.

Mako

Thanks for the comments guys, sorry I didn't see them, I haven't done much on the sons for ages and Uni has been hectic.

Young logan: You're welcome, I hope you don't make the same mistakes I did

Mako_Boy: Sorry for the lateness of the reply.

The green is laid on with the airbrush over a grey primer, I then give it a zenithial highlight with the green and a bit more grey.
Highlights with straigh astro grey are then applied to the highest points.
Then I paint on the freehands.
Next is the first layer of chipping, which is astro grey and applied with a piece of foam, then in a smaller pattern and amount I apply chardon granite with foam too.
Metals are painted next, washed to your taste, as well as pouches and weapons.
The model is then sealed with tamiya gloss varnish, and a thinned oil wash applied.
this is streaked following the instructions in the FW books, which are invaluable for the tutorials, I recommend anyone that is painting vehicles or weathering marines give them a read.
Pigments are dusted on to the feet to simulate mud and dust etc.
Finally, a coat of tamiya flat clear, or if you have it Dullcote is applied to lock everything in place and kill the shine.

Hope that helps mate (and its not too late).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi again, more procrastination sees some more models finished in a familiar scheme. these aren't for me though, but a commission.

FW sent through some very nice casts, though I didn't realise til I painted the face that the right eye of the terminator was miscast, so I turned it into a scar, and in a first for me, the swords were all straight! No hot water required.

The bases are from Dragon-forge, and were quite nicely cast too.

Following my normal tradition of taking poo photos though the bases and gold lack depth in the shots, I really need to set up a proper photo booth.

What do you think of the base colour? Should I change mine from the urban to this? I kind of like how the sea green pops off the base.

Thanks for looking.

Thanks mate, GW golds do leave a bit to be desired, the vallejo liquid gold range is amazing, they just need to be thinnned and cleaned with white spirits.

Sounds like I need to have a look at these... I have always been impressed with Vallejo's range and everyone seems to highly rate them but I have always had a misplaced allegiance to GW for some reason. Time for change perhaps

Hi again guys, some more work has been done on my sons, and their allies. . . .

These guys are are all done up to the oils stage which will define all the armour plates alot more.

Firstly, the Azreal counts as:

Second is some apothecaries, after the oils I'll add some more blood to their armour, removing progenoids can be a messy business.

Next is my take on the Worldeaters, which I'll be using as assault marines, they'll all be getting MkIV jumppacks and butchers nails markings.

In the vein of the WE's, the Sgt for the squad, or some kind of preator if the WE section gets out of hand.

Finally . . . . .

Thanks for looking.

While it may not be my place to say, as I am not nearly as talented as you are, I feel that "Azrael" isn't up to your usual standard, and the sword is miles better than I could ever do, but I feel it doesn't represent your full potential Sheep. The World Eaters are top notch thoough, and the Apothecaries are somewhat of a midground between the two.

In saying that, and as said previously, you're a painter far great than I and I have to praise your obvious skills .

Thanks gents

Ivan: got it always loved them, ADB made them better, and now the FW rules have come out I can't resist adding some as allies for the sons.

Deadshot: Thanks for the feed back. and I agree with you. The sword suffered because my airbrush had a blow out while I was painting it, I'm now waiting on a new needle to fix it. The lack of depth is because they haven't gotten an oil wash yet, so they have basically no shading.

Sheep you continue to churn out excellence like ...well, some sort of excellence factory.....yes, well, dodgy similes aside, these guys really are awesome and I cant wait to see what you do with the night lords!

If you want me to be uber critical, which is what we are here for when we are not egging each other on, I would say that the black armour chipping/weathering on both the SoH apothecary in the mark 4 armour and the two world eaters might be slightly too uniform? Don't get me wrong, they look fantastic, and I understand they are just troopers so you dont want to spend forever on them, but maybe just make sure you keep the weathering patterns irregular, especially on the world eater on the right's legs, all the patches were very circular if you see what I mean, there is a danger of accidentally making dalmatian marines! Which i'm not saying would be a bad thing, just quite quite different!

Even so I am nit picking out of jealousy! Keep up the fantastic stuff!

Sorry I just got around to getting back to this thread, things disappear from the front page so quick!

I agree, and I intend on changing the way I apply the weathering from now on! one of my friends said the WE's looked like Dalmatians too! I hope I've fixed with this update I think the problem was the way I used the sponge, so that'll change.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've managed to finish 3 more sons, and 2 WE (bar their backpacks which is why they count as WIP).

Firstly we have my home made Praetor (I have another set of the FW praetors I will be painting for myself, hopefully as well as the ones I did on commission), he was going to be used as a counts as Azreal, but will now probably be used as a sternguard SGT.

The base features a salamanders helmet, or a really dirty SoH helmet, its a pretty standard feature on my bases, and I tend to forget I'm doing PH/HH and just paint them whatever colour I have to hand.

I'm not actually that happy with the sword on this guy, but being a gaming army, and still not having played a game with it I think I can let the fact the back side is better than the front side slide. I also painted the plasma in a more subdued orange because its not actually pointed at anyone, so it makes sense for the weapon to be powered down.

Next we have some apothecaries, which given their uselessness as a buff bubble ala sang priests will probably just get used as regular Tac marines.

I haven't managed to get my hands on any of the new technical paints yet, so the blood here is done the old fashioned way using Tamiya clear red, and a second coat with a touch of black. But I'm pretty happy with the effect, even at a million times magnification.

Next we have the reason for the title of the blog post . . . WIP World Eaters. I personally see the change in coloration from white to red as a result of their blood letting. The human body has between 4-6 liters of blood, and an Astartes would have considerably more, so they would make a hell of a mess when hacked up with chain weapons.

I intend on writing a piece of fluff eventually that describes how some of the berzerkers as a symbol of there heresy decide not to wash off the blood of the slain from Istvaan, and as time went on, armour broke and was replaced, but painted red to maintain the connection to the betrayal and dropsite massacres.

Thoughts on the paint job, the fluff and the amount of blood?

Thanks for looking.

I like you thoughts on the armor being replaced over the years with red plates, I've seen it other places as well, but I always wanted to see someone come out and say the crazy mechanicus guys who turned traitor developed "mood armor" like mood rings where it changes colors according to the wearers feelings. that way you could paint a berserker baby blue and tell everyone the story of how he was feeling inadequate with his skull pile being so much smaller than the other berserkers

Blood splatter looks good, though I've never seen the effect a chainsaw to a cow would have in real life, it looks plausible to me.

Sir i think the white turning red via blood is an inspired idea! not only that but the effect looks absolutely perfect, more than just being splashed, but less than taking a bath, must have been difficult to know when to stop! but i think you have done it well, also the dalmatian syndrome has entirely vanished, is that a new sponge technique because it looks infinitely better!

Sheep's general log of stuff - Updated 22/03/2016 Finished sculpting a Mhara gal @ 2013/12/10 05:30:43

Post by: Sheep

Thanks guys Glad I'm not the only one on the red armour = blood wavelength

Theo: the mood ring armour made me actually lol, that's great!

J-paint: Yeah it was a fine line to walk, I had to stop applying it and walk away, then came back re assessed where I was up to, and applied a little bit more and called it done.
The blood has actually covered a bit of the battle damage, which is helping alleviate the Dalmatian effect we were seeing.

The next members of the WE squad will have the new sponge effect tested on them, but will have to wait til I get home from work in 2 weeks for testing.

Thanks cave dweller

Some fluff I wrote this afternoon whilst watching the cricket:

In a legion of brutality and violence SGT Brakor had been known as a bit of a philosopher. Not to the extent of one of those blinded by knowledge like the weakling sorcerers of the 1000 sons, but a berzerker with a brain.

All that changed with the nails. The primarchs rage and pain drove the contemplation from his mind like the sun burning off a light fog. The times inbetween battles were becoming a struggle for Brakor, knowing something was missing, and craving the release from the pain that blood letting brought.

So it came to be that he joined the primarch in his rebellion without conscious thought, carried along in the tide of blood released by the betrayal and massacres that followed.

It was therefore a surprise to Brakor to step out of the boarding ramp of his assault companies storm eagle, not into a hail of bolts, or a maelstrom of las and hard rounds, but into the bright lights of the embarkation hanger of "sempervivum mort" battle barge of the 116th chaper of the 3rd legion.

He stood motionless, starring at a battered mk 4 helm, much of the legion white replaced with dents, scratches and ceramite grey patches, all covered in a patina of congealed blood. He could recall every scrape, blow, bullet and blade that had left a mark, dent and splash of warm vitale that had caressed the memnotic receptors of his armour. He was captivated by the bloodshed, relishing every sensation, lost in the eidetic flood of violence.

Light scratching intruded on Brakor's reminiscing. Finally a hissing noise and sensation of warmth on his left greave snapped him back to reality. A maintenance servitor was beginning the automated process of cleansing and restoring the finish of his armour.

Rage overcame recall, striking downwards with the closest weapon to hand, his helm connected with the crown of the servitor a head, explosively compressing the unsuspecting automatons skull and spine into a red paste and vent blood, brain matter and bone splinters in a wide arc.

"I will keep these skulls, this new visage of blood I have earnt through betrayal of erstwhile brothers, to remember the slaughter, recall the battle, and mark myself as a child of blood and murder". As he muttered the final word, the lodge medallion on his chest flashed cold, and the clarity of the past minutes bled from the edges of his vision, replaced with the pain and rage of the nails.

Stalking from the hanger, the fresh stench of blood began to overpower the stale metallic tang of the recycled air as the lodge brothers of his company destroyied the circling maintainable servitors.

Blood would be their new uniform, and skulls their currency. The berserkers were coming and the universe would never be the same again.

Thoughts?

21 months I have been painting these Sons of bitches, and I can finally say it. I have a playable force!

Only 1000 points, and not very optimised, or even fluffy, but its a start. . .

I guess I'll start with the new additions, firstly, HQ's.

This is Moritat Axander, and will pretty much ruin anyones day if he gets a turn of chainfire shooting at them. I haven't seen that many of these guys around the forums and blogs, which is surprising considering the damage potential they have with 2 plasma pistols.

I used the current 40k plasma pistols because I think the 30k ones look like a hair driers . . .

Unusually for me, he is clad entirely in Mk IV armour, although I did make a couple of modifications to it. There has been an extra armoured plate sculpted onto the left greave, and a plasticard strip and rivets added to the crown of his helmet to differentiate it from rank and file, and give him a pseudo crest/mohawk.

Next in the HQ slot is a Praetor in terminator armour, because a Moritat can't lead your force.

I took the normal Terminator Praetor and converted him to have lightning claws, just a simple matter of cutting all the relevant parts at the elbows and pinning them together. I also heated (carefully) the fingers on the left hand to give him a pointing/commanding pose. Looking at the pics, I need to add some definition eye sockets to the skull on the night lords shoulder pad.

I've never been a fan of unhelmeted marines, something about going into battle without a lid when explosive projectiles are flying around just seems dumb to me. So I squeezed a Mk II helmet in with a bit of trimming. Unfortunately some super glue got into the eye slit and destroyed the detail, but it still works as a gaming piece.

And what is a pimp, without an entourage?

Basically just stock Cataphractii terminators from Forgeworld, its hard to improve on perfection. The only thing I added was a heraldic shield from the Grey knight terminators to the Sgt.

And that's it for the new stuff. The observant among you would have noticed that the basing has changed though. The new style matches the tyranids, and will match the Ad mech, and the table I am going to make (eventually) for my collection. This meant that the rest of the 1k needed to be rebased.

The Sgt also had a head repose so he wasn't looking at his shoes.

Unfortunately I have to lose the stomping pose on the dread due to time constraints, but I kept the marine and the base so I can redo it at a later stage with another contemptor.

And thats 1000 points (plus a rhino), my photo set up isn't big enough to get all the models into one shot, but I'll take lots of pics at the 30k tournament being run by John from The Painting Bunker called The Emperors Legions, which is set to be epic, including a group shot.

Thanks for stopping in and reading my ramblings, what do you think of the new additions and new basing style?

Also for anyone who is a fan of the Lunar Wolves/Soh, Black library has a FREE 80page story on Ibooks right now called "The wolf of ash and fire". I just started reading it and it is Horus and his boys WITH the Emperor fighting Orks before the start of the Horus Hersey story line. Reading the Emperor kicking butt is amazing.

Looks great Sheep! Although my one critique is aimed at the rust streaks on the dreadnaught, I feel as though maybe you should try and "stump" the streaks more into the armor? Just my two cents, apart from that looks awesome!

Thanks for the positive comments guys, I really appreciate them

STC: high praise coming from you mate, I have all you alpha legion pic in a folder for inspiration if I do some allies down the road.

Theophony, thanks, i grabbed that "book" not a bad read.

Tech Guard: Stump in? I can say that pic is over exposed and the colours are wrong, so the rust is less vibrant IRL.

Ah sorry, stumping is when you run white spirits over the oils or pigments to soften them into the paint work, if that helps?

Hi all, sorry for the lack of content, but Uni has been kicking my ass, and I'm lazy.

Enough excuses, on to the content of this post. Alternate BFG ships!

These have been made by a friend of mine Mangozac, as a component of a line of ships he's done as commissions for other people and have been in a limited run, and I managed to get a couple in exchange for painted pics for advertisement, so no pressure then. Can see more of his BFG work HERE, or His website/forum/blog HERE.

These ships are great, the components came almost mold-line free, and perfectly cast, a credit to Zac as this is a "garage" kit.

In a complete brain fade I forgot to take any WIP pic that were in focus and worth posting, so here's finished pics instead.

Sooo, considering the differences in shape to the regular (and still sadly OOP) plastic ships I thought these would look good as HH era ships. Fluff wise for the colour scheme I'm saying that the ships were Lunar wolves before the change to SoH, and painting a house is a pain in the ass, imagine painting a 25km long ship, hence the SoH green spot colour.

Chipping at this scale would have been a bit strange I thought, so I left that out of the scheme.

Hope you all enjoyed this break from silence, I'm back into study for second semester now, so content will be patchy (probably non existent) for another 12-14 weeks before normal service will resume again.

Thanks for looking

Aaron

Wow *blows dust off log*

Bit of a hiatus, and direction change, I'm going to make this my log for all my work, rather than spread it around. If you want you can also follow my blog to see a few more pics, or not, you'll still get most of them here

Recently its been apparent that there is a trend for new codex's to increase the amount of miniatures you need to paint for a complete army, leading to alot of burn out among the player base locally. we all still love GW models, and fluff and play the game regularly, but its just so hard to finish a new army!

This has lead to everyone embracing the smaller point/model count options, the explosion of infinity, and other "skirmish" games.

Our gaming club sought to harness this energy and so I decided to paint some Dark Eldar so people would be able to play something other than Space Marines (and also since I have about 4000 points of DE sitting in boxes . . .).

Not being one to go with convention, I looked around on the net for inspiration and found a bright orange scheme by hyv3mynd, of the Mandulain Chapel, and plagiarism being the sincerest form of flattery I copied the basic scheme and changed a few details, just like a good essay.

The orange to black fade was done with an airbrush, which I think is on its last legs, and will soon be relegated to just doing terrain, using a mix of Tamiya, Mr hobby and GW paints, I then highlighted every edge with a pastel yellow, to tie it all together, and black lined with Nuln oil and chaos black mix.

Some of the highlights on the legs of the warriors are a bit ropey, but they'll do for Table top quality, and "proof of concept" if(when) I do more I'll tighten it up.

The models have a few subtle conversions, mainly just arm reposes to open the poses up a bit.

My favourite models are definitely the Reavers, and if(when) these blossom into a full army there will be atleast 9 of them in the list. I'm looking forward to tackling this scheme on the DE flyers too.

Zooming noises have been made

Thanks for stopping in, let me know what you think.

So it didn't take long for the DE bug to bite.

One of the most impressive models at the time of release, and of the DE, and GW range at the time was the Razorwing. It, and the scourges pretty much sold me on the entire miniatures range.

I got a bit carried away today when I was digging through some boxes and found an old Razorwing, it was dusty and coated in paint already, but 20 mins of TLC and I got it to the point I could prime and base coat it again.

Some of the surfaces are a bit rough, but I still love where this is going. the second picture is more representative of the colour too.

Stay tuned for more soon.

Thanks for looking.

Thanks gents

Rawson, the canopy will be done the same as the venom for the moment til i can source some proper masking fluid, then it will probably get a similar treatment to the canopies of my stormravens.
http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m289/Sheep_06/Khorne%20Angels/IMG_0306.jpg

but for now . . .

There's something about painting one model and just having the scheme "click", it reaffirms your joy of the hobby. This is the first model I have painted for ALONG time that hasn't had a tournament or list derived goal as the end state. It makes me think these INQ28 guys are onto something, might have to try my hand at a few conversions just because.

The statues on the base are a bit cliched for DE, but I love them
Its not shown very well in the photos (unless you zoom right in) but some of the spray went a bit speckly, I can only assume this is due to too much pressure, paint that was too thick, or the needle of my airbrush is bent, or a combination of all the above.
But as far as the Table top goal of the army is concerned I'm super happy with how the scheme has translated to the model that inspired me to pick up DE in the first place.

As with the venom, the glass on the canopy is a place holder until I can get some masking fluid and come up with a canopy scheme that compliments the tones of the body. I'm undecided on engine OSL as well.

I don't know why. but spraying the stand for the base makes the model look less like a toy to me.

Thanks for looking, let me know what you think.

Fantastic work as ever!

There is something about just painting a mini for the sake of painting it, rather than 'needing' to get it done for a game (most of what I paint these days is like that, although when I do get a game I only play with painted stuff). I'd like to see your take on inq28, it certainly promotes a very different style of painting than 40k if you take the Blanche-inspired route.

Guess Nids don't do it for anyone, how about this then

The local games club has seen an explosion of interest in the game Infinity, with about half the guys there buying starters of one form or another, and the start of a small journeyman league. Since I'm trying to encourage the use of the club and the members coming in more, I decided to dig the Aleph starter I bought 4 years ago out for a lick of paint.

And then of course I ignored it and painted the coolest model first. So I present the TAG for Aleph, the Marut.

Small bit of yellow overspray on that left arm, bugger

I used alot of airbrushing to achieve the subtle purple blends across the body, the white on the high points didn't quite turn out as intense as I wanted it too, but I had to stop for fear of losing the gradients and not being able to highlight it with pure white.

The high heels are so Sci-fi

The shield didn't quite turn out the way I wanted it to either, the yellow over sprayed and coated the whole surface and I lost the gradient, so I guess Its made of the same material as the sword now . . or something.

The base is the same base colour as my Sons of Horus, but as it was drying I mixed in some white, yellow, grey and red, giving a sort of marbled finish. This was kind of lost under the application of some powders for texture and interest. The colour reminds me of a hospital, or maybe I've just watched too much Scrubs.

Finally the obligatory scale shot, as you can see for something that represents a tank in game, the Marut is pretty spindly. The actual infantry are tiny compared to 40k models, and even small compared to Boltaction, assembling them was an exercise in patience when it came to pinning.

After painting this model, and the base coats on the infantry I can safely say I need a new airbrush, any recommendations? Model, manufacturer and/or online store to buy them from would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for looking, and let me know what you think.

Wanted to do something different to the sons, but stick with the heresy, I only seem to like the traitors, so who better then the architects of the heresy?

It is a scheme heavily inspired by the FW HH books metallic scheme. I just couldn't get the inscribing to work well enough to make it a feature yet, I'll keep trying though.

The red is a a Vallejo model air colour "Signal Red", with a couple of washes, the quick and dirty of which goes like this:

Grey undercoat
2x coats of Signal red
Dry brush mithril silver
Baal red wash
Serephim sepia
Nuln oil
Then scratches with mithril

It is a quite a hard scheme to photgraph unfortunately.

I'll post more updates when I get more time

Cheers

Thanks mate The colour is a great base, but it really needed the washes to add some tonal variation and interest to it.

Just a couple of quick pics of the different freehand Legion icons I have done.

I did this one originally as I wanted to try the unmodifeid icon, but it was really complicated and way too many layers for a an army wide item and the detail was lost to the weathering so I settled on the modified icon with the daemon face in the fire.

I was alsp asked on another forum how I did the eyes, so I'll repost it here as well in case anyone's interested.

1: Vallejo German cam orange
2: Vallejo German cam orange mixed with white 50/50
3: Scorched brown mixed with black
4: Vallejo German cam orange mixed with white 25/75
5: Glaze with lamenters yellow x2
6: White reflections

Thanks guys

Every army needs a general, and Word bearers armies apparently need 2 compulsory HQ's, so here's the first of mine, the "obviously a bad guy, I don't know how we fooled the Ultramarines at all" Diabolgist.

Long time followers of the blog might recognize him as the WIP World Eaters Praetor from awhile ago, just modified somewhat.

Apart from some minor alterations, the majority of the model stayed the same, I replaced the purity seals with the more WB parchments, added some skulls to the jetpack, which were supposed to be from his victims at Istvaan.

Oh and added horns, stops him wearing a helmet, but really drives home the fact he is an evil bastard, and the source of all the daemons I plan on painting for this force.

The book has a subtle hint as to what god the planned Daemons will be from.

The broken symbol he's standing on is a cast I made of an old Buldog buckle company key chain, I think it makes a nice broken symbol of Calth, and is symbolic of the betrayal of the WB's in that theatre.

Initially I had tried to paint the legion numerals of the Salamanders, Ravenguard, and Iron hands, on the skulls, but they were just too long and detailed to fit onto such a small space convincingly.

Leading from the front . . . gets you killed now days in 40k/30k.

This final photo has been included because I think the colour is slightly more representative of the actual tone of the armour.

Thanks for looking.

Hi everyone, back from the dead again.

So recently I have moved house and as any gamer or modeler who's goes through this ordeal knows it involves packing and unpacking that most sacred space, the hobby table.

This can be painful, there's a lot of stuff, some of it get broken and things get lost, and it can take a while to get setup again.

Once you do though, it's like a blank slate, none of those half finished projects sitting there staring at you accusingly, no bits of offcuts and chucks of sprue lying around. It can be invigorating to tackle something new.

So with the constant heckling of Rictus I managed to finish the first of my Primarch miniatures, and I started with the big cheese himself, Horus.

This is the first miniature I have painted in a long time that didn't require the use of an airbrush, every step was done using standard brushes, and man am I rusty, it took along time to get back into the swing of blending highlighting and not weathering.

The cloak was shaded with purple inks, to give it a depth, but not be so dark as to be all black, I found that when I tried to use straight black to shade the cloak lost a lot of its regal appearance.

I hope the pictures are a lot better, as I finally invested in a photo booth setup, I bought a Foldio 2, which is a really nice product, easy to use and set up, though not exactly cheap.

I hope to do some experimentation with photo backgrounds, and might reshoot some of my old minis that I've done to test them out.

I also have 4 more Primarchs to paint (and another I just ordered) so expect some more painting progress in the not too distant future.

Like everyone else involved in HH I have bought a couple of sets of Battle for Calth and will be using them to start my third legion force, so watch that for developments when I finally get them in my hands.

Thanks for sticking around and reading this wall of text if you have, and thanks for stopping by, I hope to increase the tempo and consistency of posts to the blog, but we've all heard me say that before.

Cheers

Thanks gents appreciate the positive comments

I've had a collection of Primarchs building up in the background for quite a while, but they've been on the back burner as I finished units for gaming as a priority and uni got in the way.

Since I finished Horus however I've been making steady progress on the backlog and Angron is the second Primarch to be finished.

The model is from my recollection the oldest primarch in circulation, and the sculpt and basing style certainly shows its age. There has been a steady increase in the size and complexity of the bases in the character series, not entirely for the better. I would prefer FW to offer a gaming choice that comes without the over the top display bases for a more reasonable price, but that may just be me.

To that end I've actually decided not to paint the display bases for the rest (most) of the primarchs, providing me with fodder for conversions and objectives, as well as saving alot of room in the display case as well.

I have also decided to paint the remaining primarchs to a good TT standard to get them ready for some gaming. There was talk of a Primarch death match series at some of the tournaments in Brisbane which I think would be really interesting.

As you can see from the photos, I have experimented with a darker background for the pics this time, oddly it seems to make the images of the models lighter, and I actually had to dim the lights so the images didn't look too washed out.

Which background do you prefer? What do you think of AngryRon, is he showing his age, or holding up well?

Cheers

Mmmmm that's fresh! That's the kind of model that i'd love to see in the flesh - the armour plating looks great and the cloak is cool too. Would be interesting to see when they finish the primarch character series what they all look like side by side.

Not sure how I feel about the backgrounds. I think I prefer the black, but the white works too...kinda depends on the main colour of the model?...

Hello all. Welcome to another belated update.

Firstly as to why it's been so delayed, I'm expecting an addition to my life shortly, a baby girl, this as you can imagine is equal parts terrifying and exciting for me and has absorbed a lot of time and the kid hasn't even been born yet! She's due to arrive in 6 or so weeks so expect updates to be even slower than they have been after that.

In other news I've finished Aurelian, Lorgar of the Word Bearers.

As you can see he's only been done to a decent table top standard as he was batch painted with a bunch of tactical marines, and I actually ran out of Baal red during painting him.

I replaced to top of his crozius with a plastic piece from my bitz box (the warriors of chaos I think) as I lost part of the resin original in a house move.

All in all I'm pretty happy with how he has turned out, and will post some more progress pics of the word bearers as soon as I can take pics of them.

You're welcome mate. Glad I could help.

I went red because I wanted to set the force around calth, include gal vorbak and keep the scheme coherent.

Also, just as a tip, if you can't get Baal red, you can water down blood for the blood God instead. I did it to one of the tac marines as a test, and now I can't remember which one it is.

Hey guys, I took some pics of the most recently finished unit for the Word Bearers.

Gal Vorbak! Ultimate bad asses of the WB legion. I played these at a recent tournament and they kicked ass and took names, only dropping one game out of 6 to a Alpha legion army.

As you can see I modified the models to remove the duplication of the 5 sculpts. For this I used a liberal application of spawn pieces and green stuff to blend them together.

They will form a nice body guard for Lorgar in his ride for bigger games, and a solid backbone for normal sized games.

I'm looking forward to seeing what FW do for an Argel tal model (I hope they do one at least) because the sculpts are some of my favourites from FW, with the jaws and teeth motif carried throughout the sculpts being super creepy.

I'm quite happy with how they came together, the only thing I might come back to is the flesh and add a bit of variation in the tones with washes and glazes, I'll also redo the black areas of some of them as the varnish seems to have eaten their highlights.

Thanks for looking.

One thing I wanted to carry over was the animal skull and teeth from the gal vorbak, as I found them to be some of the freshest and creepiest details on the gal vorbak kit.

Thanks guys

Noodles: that's exactly how I did it! I took small amounts and rolled them into a sausage so they tapered at both ends, then pressed on them slightly to take away the perfect roundness.

I made them taper at both ends so when I cut them I had two teeth.

The jaws were sculpted seperatly and holes pressed into the areas I wanted teeth with one of my tools.

Hey all, long time between posts! Being a new father has been amazing, but takes a hell of a lot of time out of your day!

I managed to finish the Mhara gal before she arrived though, so here's some pics I snapped recently.

I found some soul grinder components in my bitz box a added them to the fist, this I think suits the rules a lot better and continues the corruption theme nicely.

The back is fairly unadorned, I just had a lack of ideas as to how to dress it up, so a random growth was all that was added.

Dead marine and the plasma cannon arm were the last pieces to be completed quite happy with how "dead" the dead marine looks.

This guy is now quite large, transport will be a problem for sure, but I'm really happy with he turned out, I just hope that he's worth the points cost and performs on the table at Inferno 2.

Thanks for looking.

Great conversion work on the dread dread . If your still looking for ideas on the back of it, how about giving it one wing that is just starting to grow out of it, or an insect like eyeball to keep an eye out for backstabbers.
