For several years I've had a keen interest in the Mechanicus, and been plotting to build an army of the robed nutters from Mars. I've always been more a converter and painter than a gamer, I usually spend way too much time building my minis, to actually have time to game with them as well. Anyway, the Mechanicus is perfect when you love to cut up bits and glue them together again - sometimes even with other bits and not your fingers - since all the lovely fluff is wide open to interpretation and no "official" miniatures exist. A playground so to speak. My view of the Mechanicus might not be strictly canon, but I see them as tech monks, who often balance on the edge of what is accepted experimentation and borderline sick, twisted and heretical. Sort of lovely darkcore, HI- and LO-tech, steampunkish, feudal society where only the strongest, most wetwired and intrigant personalities persists.
Even though I don't tent to play much, I like building my miniatures around a codex, if a gaming chance should arise. The brilliant codex from Tempus Fugitives is IMO by far the best one out there, so that has been my choice.
I run a blog The Forge http://forgemechanicus.blogspot.dk/, where I normally postthe most pics, but since I've signed up here I figured I might as well show the stuff here as well. I'll show some of the older model as well, and try to bring things up to speed in a few days.

Manus

The basic footslugger, The Hypaspist, has been through a couple of incarnations, none of which has been just right - ATM I'm waiting for some parts I know Anvil Industry will be releasing shortly, after which I'll give it another try.
I kind of like the design of the ones that has been painted, so I might very well use them as the lowgrade tech priest manning guns and such.

Velites - close combat orientatedjump infantry.

As you might see on most of my minis I simply love the stuff Joel over at http://www.anvilindustry.co.uk/ produces - brilliant stuff.

The absolute lowlife in the manufactorums are the menials, most likely are they so depraved that they are actually bred in the good old fashioned way, no testubes at all - is it even possible?????

The second round of pictures are my Praetorians. Still human soldiers though enhanced somewhat, and with access to some good equipment.

Thanks a lot, I'll try to bring you guys up to speed ASAP.

One of my absolute favourites in the codex, is the Legio Cybernetica. Huge lumps of metal, just there for the killing So far If made a couple of different Hunter robots and the first batch of Defender robots.
First up is the Hunters.

As I've already stated my army is build around the great codex from TF which can be downloaded here:http://www.tempusfugitives.co.uk/pdf/40k/Codex%20Cult%20Mechanicus.pdf
As a side project to my army I have been working on an armyfile for Battlescribe - I take it most of you know it. The program's a really useful and I like the fact that it works on any platform.
The army file can be downloaded here: https://www.box.com/s/zcg5f77zmc7dhc9109hg or via the Download section of my blog - link in the signature.
Updates will appear when ever I receive feedback, find mistakes or the codex is updated.

Seconded... slow hand clap for that HQ! I love the trailing bits for his skirt/legs... and those funky wings! The arms look a bit too big, but overall... that's a damn cool mini!

That is an awesome piece of work, I've always been fascinated by the Adeptus Mechanicus, and you've captured them perfectly.

Thanks guys - much appreciated.

Regarding the armsize, i've had a few comments on that. They are out of proportions, yes - but that is fully intended. I see this guy as a livig picture of all that is "wrong" with the Mechanicus. An ancient magus, who dabbled a bit to much with wetware and neural implants, added a few too many grafts and slept a year or two too long in cryojuice.

Once in A while you just stumble upon some stuff you can't pass on. When I last week first came across Inquisimunda I was sold. A Gothic world, religious nutters, a good game and so many minis to be inspired by the work of John Blanche. Great - so I was lured away

I have been looking at those FW bots, but if I should include them in my army/TF codex I could only fit them into either hunter or defender robot catagories, and I already have plenty of unpainted minis laying around for that

With regards to knights, last year I send a bunch of money to the Dream Forge Games Kickstarter, so within a couple of month I should receive no less than 5 of their titans in 15mm scale, which will be my knight titans - can't wait to see the face of my enemy whence they are all fielded at once

Are you unhappy about the paintjob or conversions?

Manus' Manufactorum @ 2013/04/18 11:51:14

Post by: Manus

I am happy about the conversions for sure, but to be honest I'm not really sure what it is I'm unhappy about. Just a feeling something is not quite there yet. Hence the hope they will pop more once I add the last OSL, cog pattern battledamage etc. and get some color on the base.

Manus' Manufactorum @ 2013/04/18 12:01:35

Hmm, what about adding all sorts of purity seals to them or something? Or maybe freehand some stuff on their shoulders?

Why not both of them? One should in cog, the other one in checkers?

Manus' Manufactorum @ 2013/04/18 18:18:14

Post by: Karokk

I would have prefered them with slightly darker colours and a bit more rust and battle damage. But still very nice paintjob and I love the conversions!

Manus' Manufactorum @ 2013/04/18 18:43:21

Post by: Manus

Yes I think both checkers and cogs will be present.

The red does come out slightly brighter in the pic than in real life - and fear not, battle damage will be added.
Rust however is a different matter. I actually love painting rust, which you will see if have a general look on my minis. All kinds of rust actually, and I have been experimenting quite a bit over the years. On my AdMech it will only be present on the bases, as I wanted to add it, but I simply could not envision a force committed to the Machine God, letting their equipment rust. Instead I try to work brown in to the metals using washes.
When I start painting my nurgle it will be a different matter...very different

Manus' Manufactorum @ 2013/04/22 06:59:27

Post by: Manus

Thanks a lot lord marcus - glad you enjoy the trip.
I take it it's the heads of the menials? - they are from Ramchackle games - they do look lovingly evil right!

Regarding the Defender robots, I have added some more details and battledamage, and I'm almost done now, save a few tough-ups on the bases and on the extra weapons. The breaking up of the large areas really helped the minis I think, and got rid of that slightly "boring" look they had earlier. I also changed the gatling mussel as the premade barrels simple were to tiny to drill out. Hope to finish them off later today, and take some decent pictures to night.

Manus' Manufactorum @ 2013/04/25 08:18:37

Post by: Manus

I see what you mean Viktor.
Actually the thought was, that the menials were so low on the mechanicus foodchain, that they were not worthy to wear any red. From a painting perspective you are absolutely right and I will have a look at them again and see what I can come up with.

Manus' Manufactorum @ 2013/04/25 08:35:31

Post by: Viktor von Domm

from a fluff perspective i can fully understand you and it makes a lot of sense to me... but do you play or just paint and collect? if the latter then let them be as is...

Manus' Manufactorum @ 2013/04/25 08:39:49

Post by: Manus

I mainly build and paint - have a few games a year though.
Perhaps it will help later on, as up to 10 menials can be upgraded to C.O.G.s, an ogryn sized worker - and I was planning on adding red colors to those. That might actually bring the whole unit into color coherency.

What about some more high ranking Mechanicus figures? I'd love to see squads of robed guys with all sorts of nasty weapon systems from their limbs. You could use a combination of Chaos, Dark Eldar, Skaven and Imperial weapons bits with robed fellow.

Oh yes, lots of Priest are in the plans. Those will be highly individual miniatures and I'm really looking forward to making those - hence they will also be added slowly, since I was planning on using them as kind of an reward to my self after doing some units, "now you have been a good boy - go make a priest"

Thanks for the suggestions on part, had not considered skaven, but have a look into the range - and I love the blightwheel miniatures, all ready have silly amounts of their stuff

Awesome work I had some similar visions in mind for a little project, but never considered using those Puppetswars heads good call

I thought the cables were the tube maker tool, great fun to use and surprising some of the results you get from it, I even managed to make some cable length that looked like frag grenades

I like the AnvilIndustries arms mixed with chain swords,I believe thats what they are anyway.

Great conversions and some nice work there I am keeping a close eye on this thread

Thanks once again guys.

@lone dirty dog: yep, the tube tool is good fun. Actually I've accidently made those grenade looking cables as well - you simply turn one of the tube-plates the wrong way, think it works best with the large size though.
The chainblades are actually the bayonets from anvilindustry and not chainswords.

@viktor: DE has all the really evil stuff, especially the Cronos is one of the most twisted kits out there IMO:

Will you also be including a Tech Assassin in there? Sort of an AdMech counterpart of the Officio Assessinorium.

Hi
I will add an assassin for sure, Blightwheel, showed a cool mini off a few weeks ago that would fit perfectly - not on their webshop yet, though.
She will not be the leader of this pack, but I'm planning on making a suitable sinister looking tech priest to control the unit.

Could you post a link or pic of that Blightwheel miniature?

Love the murder servitors!
I agree that the one with the syringe and the double hooks is the creepiest - I think the two cocked hands give it a real 'praying mantis' look. Makes me shudder!

Wonderful creations you have Manus. I would say it's very much in style of Blanche, but I think you actually surpass this. Truly Grimdark

Thanks guys. Really happy with all the kind words - as I might have written, Blanche is the king of twisted creations, and one can only hope to one day have an imagnation like his, and skills to display those thoughts. These murder servitors, might have a slightly more Blanche like apperance, than the rest of my army - as I have recently been looking a lot on Inquisimunda/INQ28 minis. But it would be cool to be able to keep that theme going for the rest of the army.

@mailika2: Luckily I did download the pic, as I can find it nowhere on the webshop or facebook now. I just wrote them asking if it would actually be sold later on.

Ok, here some additional inspirations!

Cerebralerebus's gallery - most likely some of the weirdest AdMech stuff I've ever seen. It's a big thread, some of his stuff can also be found here. But it's not complete.

Close Combat servitors - dunno who did them, but they're scary...

Manus' Manufactorum @ 2013/05/07 07:02:19

Post by: Manus

Thanks for the links - the first army/gallery, I have been drooling over several times, so brilliant, I think the right word is.

The second one I had not seen before, and it does have a couple of stealworthy details

righty, on to the painting

Manus' Manufactorum @ 2013/05/07 08:38:05

Post by: Malika2

Here some more stealable ideas:

Braun Vi Skitarii by Apologist.

Mechanicus by G.Hawke - The guy really managed to create the weirdness of the Adeptus Mechanicus with his big robots and vehicles.

You need more big stuff man....Titan?

Manus' Manufactorum @ 2013/05/07 08:52:58

Post by: Manus

Thanks for the links once again. Apologist's creations I knew about, but the works of that last guy, I had not seen before - cool stuff as well.
And don't worry, I have loads of big stuff planned out all ready. Siege Dreadnoughts, Myrmidon Assault Engines and Knight Titans. I spend some money in Dreamforge's Kickstarter - and have 5 of their 15mm titans incomming later this year. They will be slightly bigger than the GW dreadknight, and will be my Knight Titans. The other two will be converted up from various models.

Really brilliant stuff, here Manus. I'm going to have to disagree with the assertion that the Menials need red. I think it makes them look more low on the ranking the way they are. The basing and their overall vibe ties them into the army well-enough I think. I do think that the Praetorians need to be based to further tie them in to the army. I find that basing can be the biggest thing that ties an army together, and having them lack that is a miss, for me. Also, you and I aren't so different. I much prefer painting, modelling, and background than I enjoy actually playing this game. Will be following this thread closely.

Paint is pulling all these parts together nicely, plus I like the dull dark colour pallet really brings out the dark gothic theme.

Personally I would not add red to the pallet either sorry Vik, nice to see some one else has the old Citadel paints nocking around

My Bad but I read it as Aye ? meaning I don't understand what you are saying

Yes, I see what you mean, I would paint some cables in red or yellow maybe add some coloured buttons in red or green.
Last but no way least the eye sections in red or green as well, there is the option of doing OSL if he feels up to it even.

ah... the great difference between ! and ?...

and yes... cables in suitable colors would be a good way to make some spotcolors

Manus' Manufactorum @ 2013/05/13 05:21:19

Post by: Manus

Thanks a lot guys, both for the comments and the slap stick, much appreciated

The plan with regards to red and these servitors, was to paint parts of their helmets as well as the armour red. I want red on these. The way I see the difference between these and the menials, is the menials are bread for working - some even bread the natural way - oh the horror!!!!!
The murder servitors however, are constructs - someones pet project, and hence entitled to a dab of red. For the lenses on the helmets I was thinking glossy black. Most of the larger minis feature a bright green as spotcolor, and the plan was to carry that over onto the servitors as well.

With regards to bases, well I'm really on the same page - bases are great for both tying an army together, But also making less cool minis - better looking minis. The will be several tracked units iin the army, and to be honest I was not sure how the Preatorians would look if based - too bulky, perhaps? So I decided against it, but that will go into reconsideration, once I finish more of the tracked units and get a fell for the need to base them, with regards to the overall look.

Again a good link with some cool minis. Very distinct style - I even have some of the Iron brotherhood or what their name is.

"Master"...hmmm, I can live with that - does have a ring to it.

A small painting update. Skin is done now - added more highlights and some red and purple washes, to add some depth.

Manus' Manufactorum @ 2013/05/15 05:31:32

Finished the skin and painted up the red areas. Though it's still very unfinished it does give quite a good impression of how they will look finished.

Post by: lone dirty dog

I like the fact that even adding the red you have still managed to keep the grimness, I hope you don't add any white though as personally it would lighten the scheme which would be a shame.

The flesh tone is quite a creation in its self as it has quite a dull tone but still looks functioning, by this I mean most conversions of this nature have an almost deceased skin tone which you have seemed to avoided.

They have turned out looking great a real achievement of which I am jealous

Thanks guys.

I have worked quite a bit on the reds and it's not quite as grimy any longer. I'm sure that will change one I start to add weathering and battledamage, so that's not a bit concern on my behalf - that's normally wjat happens anyway, and it's the same red as on all the previous models. I think you are right about not adding any white/creamy colors to the armour that could breal up the look of these ones. Perhaps black or grey cogpattern could be used, or perhaps I should completely drop it and just go with checkers for these ones.

They're looking great! 'd try the checkers, as I think it will break up the model nicely without detracting from the model as a whole.

Thanks guys.

Not really much of an update, as it has been mostly touch ups and adding details and spotcolor since the last photos. Really getting close to finishing now.
I've been going over and over the issue with checkers and cogpattern, and I think I've come to the conclusion of not adding either, doesn't really fit the minis anyway I think. My only concern are the flat red areas - I'm hoping some battle damage will take care of that though.

JUST FANTASTIC

I love the touch of green just catches your eye and really draws you in to the model, the red is spot on not to bright but not to dim just perfect.

Love the little touches like the hazard stripe wire and the small cheque section on the shoulder pad, nice touch and ties them in nicely with the rest ( you thought we missed that didn't you )

I love the skin tone cant get over how well it works, the grey with a hint of purple under the fleshy tone is great, and I love the skin colouring around the fleshy areas and the mechanical whips .

Post by: Manus

Thanks guys, really means a lot you like them.
@ldd: wasn't sure anyone would notice those checkers no To be honest I'm really happy wit the way they turned out my self. I really like adding all those little details. Not sure it's really visible on the battlefield, but as my main thing is modelling and painting I just don't feel a mini is finished until I've given it all I can.

@galgaroth: the skin color, let me see - not sure I could make it again my self to be honest.
basecoat of dark flesh, then a mix of a skincolor/purple/grey, next layer adding skincolor to the mix, then shading with blue and purple washes, then more skin color to the previous mix. Then I switched to a brighter skincolor mixed with grey and added a couple of layers of that with more and more skin color mixed in. Finally I used the skincolor it self but watered down. Then I used ogryn flesh wash to add some pinkness to selected areas, as well as purple and red washed around the skin/metal fusions.
I thnk that's as close as I can get.

@Razak: Thanks a lot. Actually both my gamingboard(tablecloth) modular terrain and terrain pieces all match each other, as well as the bases on the minis, so I'm pretty much covered there.

@ldd: A dust vehicle it is, some sort of american light walker if I remember correctly. The grey bits are from the GW dreadknight. I think the larger one is one of the legguards - the other one I have no idea what is.

I think I'll have to rework the legs some - make it slightly taller and thinner at the "pelvis" to give the arms more room to operate. Anyway, it's a very early mockup, but not you at least know which direction it heading.

A thing that came in my mind... If You do a couple of very long harms, orangutan style, You don't need to shave the pelvis and is a very useful machine for heavy jobs at strange and difficult angles/reach

Thanks guys really glad you like it so far, I guess lots of things will be subject to changes still.

@selvaggio Saky: I was thinking long arms my self and I do not thing I'll reshape the pelvis actually, but perhaps slightly change the fixpoint of the legs.

@ldd &viktor: I wasn't really planning on extending the legs, as I agree that to long legs would be wrong (speaking strictly for this robot not any IRL issue). I was thinking about moving the legs a bit further down and create a new fixpoint. I was also planning on adding more "toes" to the feet, as I think it would topple over in a second with the feet it has now.

Sorry sorry sorry - will never happen again - or perhaps I shall stay mount up all my anarchism and continue anyway . I actually just bought some of the wire from Zinge, it wasn't the size I wanted here though - and as I haven't used it yet I cannot say how it works, but having felt it I fail to see why it wouldn't also create the same gaps, as is the main problem with guitarwire.
And with regards to DF - I did look on their website yesterday to order some, but a service notice said there was around 14 days turnaround on orders, and I simply couldn't wait that long. I also tried making some thick greystuff cables, but I couldn't bendt them sufficient and still make the glue stick, I also tried pinning them but they were to thin to drill without damaging the cablesurface.

nerdfest09 wrote:Looking good Manus! I love the sci fi feel you've got going on with the walker, it is coming together really nicely, may i ask what you intend to do with it? game or just the joy of building? :-)

Thanks a lot. Mostly I just build, but a couple of times a year I actually get to game with my minis - so at some point all these will get on the table.

Post by: lone dirty dog

LOL the wire from Zinges has more give so you only get a slight gap between the ringlets, as with guitar wire there is more restrain so when you bend it the resistance causes rings to pull rather than bend.

DF that is a while to wait, but they usually dispatch really quickly

It was only to offer a better finish for your models not as a real criticism more a helpful gesture

No worries, I know and I do not get offended easily so please do never hesitate with suggestions or criticism. I also do appreciate both irony and sarcasm by the way - yes I'm that old.

I think I'm going to order some of that DF stuff been wanting to try it for years. The thing holding me back are stories about how much the danish postal service sometimes add in taxes on parcels coming from the US of A

Manus' Manufactorum @ 2013/06/13 06:41:25

Post by: Manus

Lookie - I used the Zinge wire Quite honestly I didn't experience much difference between that and a thin guitarwire. I would easily believe there would be a difference with larger diameters.

The Assault Engines are equipped with a huge glaive, and though I've planned to use both chainsaws, piston driven drills and such, I figured It would be in place to kit at least one out with an actual glaive. So once again cutting up some Dreadknight bits I ended up with this. Biscuit to the first to spot where the small vents are from!

Manus' Manufactorum @ 2013/06/13 07:29:07

Post by: lone dirty dog

Easy give me the biscuit it is the Anvil Industry back pack vent come on try harder, also I believe the end of the Glaive is the Zinge Cog sprue am I correct then

Nice work on the Glaive like the holes that little bit of detail really lifts the mini, I think you have the old Zinge cables their ( but could be wrong ) as I thought the new ones were silver.

@Manus - Looking awesome!

@LDD the newer wires are copper coloured. the smallest wires are a little softer than guitar wire have a lot les spring and crucially have a big enough wrapping wire that can be painted without losing detail.

Cheers

Hi Kit good to have someone here who know the stuff for sure Seen in the light of recent events I do find it a little peculiarly you show up here right after we mention Zinge - you wouldn't by any chance be affiliated with any of the following organisations: NSA, CIA or MI-6?

Really looking forward to using your new servoarm - really an awesome piece.

Wel initially I thought this was going to be the Shockwave cannon for my myrmidon, but for some reason I just gotten another idea for that - which would fit better I think. That would mean this get an upgrade to Graviton cannon, which I think it look more like anyway. Meaning I think this looks more like something called Graviton cannon than something called Shockwave cannon.
This in turn will lead to a change in pattern/armament of my first Assault engine - however I should mean a faster birth of the second one. Yasis enough with the babbling.

that cannon arm has some really nice details...

and it really looks the part even tho you made it all up for the first time... so it actually is only able to look like it is...and not as it should as there is nothing out there to look like it should ... but you made it look like there should be something out there to make it as if it looks like that ... somehow I just twisted my mind a bit....

Well, definitely Ork Killer kan or Ork dreadnought parts, Catachan flame tanks, ork Bomber exhaust I think but could be wrong COD Lamp and a third party plasma cannon.

Not my best work but it's the best I can do

Pretty close.
Puppetswar plasmagun, Killerkan arm and pressure tank, Cadian flamertanks (underslung) COD lamp, tanks from Dreasknight (side mounted).

Looking forward to seeing what you have up you sleeve next Kit. Actually I was planning on using one of the "weapons" from the servoarm for the shockwave cannon.

So a bit more progress on the engine. This one will get the graviton cannon, which means it will get a different CC weapon - as I want to use the Glaive for the CC orientated one coming up next. So instead I'll use my favourite bit from the killerkan box, a piston mounted powerdrill
Also worked on the engine - since the parts I wanted to use (from Blood and Skulls industry) turned out to way bigger than I thought, I fitted a sentinel engine instead. And LDD if you can figure out where the middle bit is from - I'll have to say...well something nice

Manus' Manufactorum @ 2013/06/18 11:48:29

Which middle bit if you mean the square box bit I am thinking SM vehicle but which one I have no idea mate.

Why thank you kindly sir, I have a sad fascination with working out the parts

But I have to say this guy is all kinds of cool, I really was not sure what to expect from the parts you showed but seeing it come together is just WOW.

I would mention one thing (but it might just be the pic angle) the plasma cannon looks quite heavy, have you considered adding some extra supports.

By this I mean some supports coming from the Orc Killa Kan leg connecting to the side of the Plasma cannons flat top rectangle section, I hope that makes sense.

Post by: Viktor von Domm

hmmm....

I am not that thrilled by the use of orky legs... maybe if you could use the method of repositioned ork legs it would look fitting?

and it depends on what you further do to the plasma arm that the arm will look good...atm it looks kinda weird...

hope I wasn´t too harsh on you now

Manus' Manufactorum @ 2013/06/27 09:14:48

Post by: Manus

No no - don't mind me being all in tears now
Actually I'm king of on the same page as you with regards to the plasma arm, but had decided that was all right anyway. Need something bigger and bulkier right?

The head is most likely going to change as well, I have ordered some "Jotun" heads from hasslefree, which I hope will be just right for this. The body and legs are not that easy to work with as they are in a fixed position - so options are not great. I'm pretty confident the final look will be quite good though, the paintjob will take away the last bit of orkyness.

Manus' Manufactorum @ 2013/06/27 09:42:21

Post by: lone dirty dog

Dam you better get your tissues ready then

No I wont be to harsh but I do agree this does not reflect your earlier work, this seems a little unbalanced and clumsy to be honest.

The head does not work at all for me ( sorry but never been a fan of the bobble head look ) the only way I can see this working would be to extend the ork legs to give more hight.

I kind of see what Vik means by the over stretched arm look, it's not that bad but maybe add a piston between the upper and lower arm as support.

Manus' Manufactorum @ 2013/06/27 10:27:43

Post by: Manus

Bugger - just ran of clenex.
Nope - no more work on the gun arm, already decided it will be completely redone. I think I have a devastator plasmacannon that can be reworked into some thing much more appropriate. I kind of went down this road as I wanted something build into the arm rather than on to the arm. Revisited though, and I think you'll like what it will become instead. Actually rather nice that you guys state your mind, as I had initial doubts my self, but somehow managed to convince my self that it was good enough.
The head does look rather comical, it's not perfect in IRL either but actually not half as bad as it looks in the pic. As I mentioned I have ordered some new heads, that I hope will fit better and also add to the overall look of fabricated servitor as well as make the unit look "the same" regardless of the individuality I want to create in the minis.
Keep the comment coming guys.

The "jotun" head

the new head would be cool addition...

or you could go for the clankers heads of maxmini...?
also... look for storag... he is a talented chap at this board... currently with a leave of absence but he made upright standing orks... http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/393111.page#3369963
that should help you with those legs...they do have potential... and also... if you are able to raise the legs then the ratio between torso and legs and head would be more fitting... and... my trouble with the plasma arm is that it has little to no technological...er...logic... it is too prostetic looking for a gun to functioning... (my language skills today are crap...) i think mechanic limbs and then attachments of guns is the way to go... you have done so already way better...

Should he had been recycled it would be just in the spirit of the AdMech. Fortunately it was just that ugly gun arm that needed a change. So here is a new one, bigger and more killing-like-looking. I like it much better my self.

Have to see it painted but as of now. Not a big fan of the head/face looks to orky to me. Other wise, great work! This comment is regarding your walker.

Manus' Manufactorum @ 2013/06/30 18:04:58

Post by: Manus

Thanks guys.

The head is still very much undecided - I still hope the Jotun head will be just what I'm looking for with regards to both size and look. The sticky out bit on the torso has nothing to do with the head or neck, but is some gubbins (in lack for a better word) that has some unknown tecki meaning.

With regards to the menials and red, I have pretty much decided to leave them as is. The idea behind is they are so low on the mechanicus foodchain, they are simply not worthy of wearing red.

Perhaps the Assault engine looks somewhat rough now and I can see why you call it a bit orky, though I never saw it like that my self. The central part though, is not a face or head but the drivers compartment, as it is a driven engine and not a robot. I'm also pretty sure that the addition of a few mechanicus icons and the paintjob will turn it even further away from any orkyness.

last but not least, I've added a few bit to the gun here.

Manus' Manufactorum @ 2013/07/01 07:30:01

Post by: Manus

Now it really starting to take shape, giving a feel of how big and lumbering/menacing it will look. There going to be a servoarm somewhere in there as well, perhaps under the chainfist if I can fit it in.
Got the Jotun heads - hmm - really cool, but nowhere near the size I hoped for, they are about the size of ordinary SM heads. Well they'll go into the servitor pool instead - have loads of cool ideas for those as well - but that's a completely different story

The converted ogre head shown earlier is siply not good enough, too large and bulky - those will be reserved for the COGs I think. I have one more idea I'll try out today, see if I can make it work, and get some pictures up later. If anyone have any good ideas for slightly-larger-than-human-but-still-humanoid-heads I'll be happy to hear you suggestions.

Manus' Manufactorum @ 2013/07/01 14:57:04

Post by: Theophony

It's not a humanoid, but how about this head

It's from the chaos defiler. I could make a nice cybernetic head if cut down, possibly a cloak over it as well.

Only other thing you might try that I could think of would be heads from a 35mm line of figs.

Manus' Manufactorum @ 2013/07/02 07:13:48

Post by: Manus

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Believe me I've been through all the GW model at least a 100 times The defiler head is really awesome, and I have actually planned on using it on my next assault engine.

I borrowed the idea of using a slightly altered version of the DA talon mask, from Dave Taylor - and I'm in the process of adding bit to it now. The first mock-up gives a good idea about size, which is fairly good I think, the position will be lowered a bit I think - to create a more lumbering look.

and for comparison.

Manus' Manufactorum @ 2013/07/02 09:37:48

Post by: SelvaggioSaky

That's a good head choice!
I would shave off the DE details on the bottom of the mask tho, or cover them with a gasmask/breather.

Manus' Manufactorum @ 2013/07/02 10:39:01

Post by: lone dirty dog

I hate to say this mate but neither head is rocking it for me really, both seem to make it look like a mutated ork rather than any thing else.

Maybe mech the head up more to deter the looks from its original incarnation, other wise it just looks like the Ogre or DE head stuck on an Ork body.

Manus' Manufactorum @ 2013/07/02 10:47:56

Post by: Manus

Can I swear on this forum? Have a urge to only use a four letter word, to express all the words in a sentence.

Unfortunately I kind of agree. The DA mask will be converted intensively and I'll try to make finished version of it before i ditch the idea completely.
I had a suggestion on my blog to add a lot of optics just above the round thingie on the chest, and the sculpt a hood over it. Sounds really cool, but also slightly scary - sculpting is no my force, at all.

Manus' Manufactorum @ 2013/07/02 11:17:56

Post by: Dark Apostle 666

I'd agree with the lenses and optics thing - the problem I find with using Ork bits is that they are very distinctive in silhouette' unless you can mask them somehow.

My advice would be to put this guy aside and not get burned out over him - All the other stuff I've seen in this thread is truly incredible, maybe if you try doing another mini for a bit you'll get that "lightbulb" moment?

Anyway, great thread, awesome stuff - keep it up!

The hoses on the body are just 1mm round plastic rod. The cable on the plasmagun is made of greystuff, using a tubetool.

Suggestion because I like being subversive:

A dwarf head?!?

Squats are out of the 40k realm (sorta) so the stocky mechanical hobnail boot look would tie in with a solid bearded head stuck on.
<<edit>> Ooooh! One with a split beard to show off that chest piece.

Just a thought.

Thanks guy, keep the comments and suggestions coming.

@vik: No I had not considered that - that one will go right in the memorybank soup and perhaps come out again later on.

@theophony: Not easy with a head to this one, that's for sure - guess I'll just keep trying, I actually just had a new idea to try out if the DE head turn into real rubbish.

@LDD: hmm - glad I didn't order the ork bodies then. Thanks for the link - I knew him though, great work and a great guy as well, we follow each other's blogs intensively.

@Talizvar: Well had not seen that coming I think the head would be too small as well, and honestly I cannot see my vat grown super soildiers be genetically modified to sport a huge beard. Great though though

A bit further work on the DE head - shaved down, and with the addition of a few bits. Works better than before, but I'm still not sure, guess it's down to how my sculpting of neck and such will turn out.

Thanks for you kind words gentlemen.

The plan with DE helmet was indeed to add cables with the neck, but on the surface, not as the neck it self. I used that on the defender robots - and would need a distinct separation from that configuration. Same with gills, shutters or holes in the mask, this would be a clean glossy black surface like this:

Please let me hear more thought on the servoarm Viktor - I think it looks really wrong in the good way - will also lend an evil hand in battle

The tube tool I use is http://masqmini.com/index.php/tubetool.html

Following all the debate about the head quite a few have liked the idea of a head with lots of lenses and a hood, so I though I'd give it a try - still trying to work out how to do a hood. So it seem I ended up using the defiler head after all Theophony
Still very unskilled in the sculpting business, but I guess we can all learn. I cannot imagine how the pros out there are able to make all those little details. If anyone know good sculpting instruction/videos do not hesitate to link.

I think I like that one best as it hides the identity of whatever's inside the suit. Because of the model's rather unorthodox stature & proportion that solves a lot of the issues with the other heads.

I actually like the new interpretation great choice, just take a hooded head and copy it that simple, build the basic shape not obscuring any detail let it dry then put on a final layer for the creases and finished look.

Invest in the clay shapers they will assist greatly and result in a smoother finish, also make sure your GS is uniformed and allow around 15 minis to 20 before trying to sculpt it.

Also if you like what you have done stop, you can go back and add more but you cant undo what you ruin.

yeah... that is of course quite a good point you are making... and of course the arm per se is oozing a sort of doc ock vibe... where i am standing is this: first... symetry... this will disrupt it (although it isn´t that much symetrical in the first place... so kinda no valid argument...) and second.... the way you added it it looks limp and thus a bit too lame... more flashy pose and i might be sold on the third arm

as for the new face ... very daring and i like your concept...
but as you had revealed... you own the tube tool... thus... i suggest the next filter for the "mouth" section you do like this... you use the tube tool and make a slightly bigger section in that tool... that cut the section to size and build the frame around that filter as you have done already... i am not saying your current looks wrong in a way here... just that the next time you should use everything at your disposal!... the face as of now i really like... the side filters look very good and i like how you used that bit (SM rhino?)

oh and while i am currently at it... the sewing detail on the ork pants... i would get rid of them... too orky looking i think... but that is just my very personal taste bud speaking here

Thanks guys, glad to have you on board - don't know why I'm struggling so much with this one, normally that never happens. Anyway, tried making a hood yesterday. Well, to be completely honest, I don't know what to think about it. Not really happy, certainly it does not look like any other hoods out there. Not really sure why though - perhaps the "sides" needed to be more straight? Or it should have been placed more forward - "hanging" more in front of the eyes? Also not completely unhappy - does look like a hood - a bit. And once I add a few folds and the planned cables it might once again change look completely - meaning I might get lucky.....

Not bad... what's it look like around the back side?

Manus' Manufactorum @ 2013/07/06 20:06:20

Post by: Viktor von Domm

yup.. some more shots would be helpful... and you have to remind yourself here that the head is quite wide... so the hood looks like that due to the width of the head...

Manus' Manufactorum @ 2013/07/07 02:02:53

Post by: Talizvar

I would suggest a dangly wide strap hanging down on either side and more of a "mantle" like a duster has along the back?
Give it a nice gear tooth fringe?

edit: I would retract the dangly straps and just a round mantle/poncho with a gear edge.
It would help cover the transition on the mechanical arm it looks a bit spindly.

Maybe instead of the hood you went a bit in the opposite direction for the guys head? Instead of covering what's underneath, have a bunch of cables running out of the back of the head and plugging into his back/spine/other things behind him?

Really enjoying following the changes to this one

Thanks a lot for the suggestions guys, sorry forgot to take some shots from the back, I do that later. I'm pretty sure what to try now, just need to turn it a few times more in ye olde grey matter before putting knife to paper, so to speak.
And thus not quite ready for that yet, I stated to get the bends, so I hurried into the cave and glued some bits together. Servitors - a good cheap meatshield, though I think if lead by a suitable dodgy techpriest to control the mindlock, they can actually be rather useful.

All right, taking the consequences of not being able to get the Herakli right I've decided to go a different way. For now ditching the ork model as base I've moved to ogres instead. Already like this better.

now that is a creepy fether... that "chest"...*shudders*

the other earlier two are good and solid looking conversion tho... the legs are from anvil I gather?

Thanks, as long creepy = good

The legs are from anvil yes, the tracks are from a good friend running Plastik Krak - check out the website, not much atm, but interesting stuff should be in the pipeline.

Though not much, it's kind of my most "advanced" sculpting yet.

Manus' Manufactorum @ 2013/07/13 09:15:10

Post by: lone dirty dog

Have to say this interpretation is much more to my liking the track works nicely and the mechanics layout looks functional and plausible.

What is the exhaust section from at the back by the way

The sculpting is coming nicely although try to build up sections of muscles in stages, I find when doing things like this it is easier to do it that way.

Also once you have finished you could get some LGS and paint it over the whole six pact section to help blend it, if you have any milliput putty add some with water to get a paste and use that as a wash.

Either way great progress

Thanks a lot mate - glad you like it, and honestly I like it much more my self. I find the sculpting thing quite funny to experiment with, so any suggestions are really appreciated - I'll try em all.
By white water - do you mean tap water or is it some special something? I do have both LGS and milliput so I'll give it a go.

The whole engine is from a killakan.

LMAO it is " WITH WATER " not white water for some reason I added an e You just mix the milliput to a paste with the water paint it on and let set.

Have you considered how you are connecting the plasma cannon to the body and what gubbins you adding

Also sorry to ask again but the exhaust section at the back of the model where is it from if you don't mind sharing

Really like the new take on the guy

Thanks guys.
I have already started adding gubbins, and I have a really cool idea for the shoulder/plasmagun joint.

I do kind of wonder though what is grammatically wrong with the last line in my previous post - or perhaps it doens't show on your screen???

Good start and your cables come out so much better than mine, think I will have to invest in procreate

Manus' Manufactorum @ 2013/07/14 09:54:04

Post by: Manus

Thanks mate. I don't know if the procreate has anything to do with it, but for these "flat" cables I have found an easier way to do them than the regular one. Instead of first making a cable with the tubetool and then flattening it, I simply use just one of the plastic pieces from the tool, and roll the cable straight on the table. That way your already flat sausage of "clay" keep the flat structure and still gets the "rippling".

Any idea on colour choices ?

As for colors, it will be the old black, red and metals.

Yep - a good coat of black always help on the sinister aspect of life
I was kind of planning to try some very pale pinkish white skin, with a chemically hue of blues and purples. Something alive but yet not in a good way - think the fat depraved monk from Name of the Rose.

Yes I see that working well especially the blue/purple veins pumping chemical around his artificially activated life, now that will be a challenge

Still waiting for my Mortis o no wait 3 Mortises I just wish they would get sent out I nearly bought one of the 15mm liviathans but was not sure about the scale sizing.

I might have to buy one when I they get released generally

Finally a bit of progress to report. Finished the skin - or so I thought, now I'm not completely sure if I should make it even more pale. Unfortunately the skin color proved very difficult to cathc on photo but I guess it gives the genuine idea.

Manus' Manufactorum @ 2013/08/29 22:31:48

Post by: lone dirty dog

Looks pretty good but if you want more grey why not just give it avery thin wash of grey .

The reason I say thin is so not to over do it but rather tone the skin slightly, also it will keep the wash more translucent.

Manus' Manufactorum @ 2013/08/30 06:31:41

Post by: Manus

Cheers LDD, That's very the pic is pretty cheating I think - I have actually washed two time with a thinned down white to achieve more paleness. I hope that the colors will show them selves better once I get some contrast in there, that's what happened with the murder servitors anyway.

Thanks guys.

Here is a small update. Really bright and too colorful atm, but I'm counting on the blue to look a lot better once it's finished, as it is now, it's only base color, adn it's supposed to be light - as in the source for OSL. I'm also counting on some heavy weathering to dull the overall look some.
