DA GROT REBELZ: Fully Converted Guard & Ork Army Project @ 2013/03/10 18:41:48

Post by: Proiteus

WHO R DEZ BOYZ?
The grot rebelz are a fully converted Imperial Guard army and has been one of my most successful converted army projects proving very popular at tournaments due to the seer character in the army, even when my painting skills were less than average. The army got rebuild a few years ago with a total of 18 tanks and 66 infantry and now I'm back for another rebuild.

DERE BACK AND DIZ TIME IT'S WAAAGH!
After 6th edition game out my mechanized grot guard army ran into a lot of difficulties mainly due to the army being designed for driving up at close quarters, so I decided to focus on my thousand sons (grey knight) army instead. Now with that project complete (for the moment) I'm eager to improve the grots both with a better army list and with the painting skills I've learnt since their last rebuild.

WAT TO EXPECT...
Organised Chaos: I feel the previous grots were a bit too clean so I'll be using weathering powders on the tanks and adding some battle damage to the infantry's armour.

Grot Gunz: No greenskin would find a lasgun a satisfying weapon as it doesn't have the same feel and sound as a solid round gun so the grot infantry will instead be armed with Sub Machine Guns which I'll be converting very soon. Plus a few other conversions for grenade launchers and autocannons.

A Big Zappy Fence: I'm going to convert a defence line made up of Tesla coils joined by wires running through the ground.

Ork Botz: As soon as the ally rules appeared I knew I'd have some fun with these and thus will be working on some allies to join the grots. Later I may add some tau weaponry/allies to my army, but for the moment I'm working on the Ork Botz.
now I thought of ork slaves but expected an ork would likely try and kill the grots regardless of any threats such as a shock or explosive collar. So instead the grot docs and meks would turn ork prisoners into ork botz; the equivalent of a greenskin servitor. I'll spearheading my army with a group of ork botz representing a unit of nob bikers, but who to lead these brutal cybork slaves?

KOLONEL GROTSKULL'S NEW GEAR!
I would need a warboss biker to lead the ork allies and considered making a bigger ork slave cybork from a starter set rat ogre with Kolonel Grotskull riding in a pod on it's back piloting it. But when that didn't work I played with a few ideas and came up with something bigger, badder and better; THE WARBOT!

The warbot is more like a battlesuit than a killa kan with Kolonel Grotskull piloting it and taking great joy in it's destructive power. The design was inspired by a youtube animation called 'Teamformers' and it was converted using Killa Kan, Sentinel, Scout Biker and a few other bitz. However while the combi-skotcha and power klaw are represented I need to represent the biker's dakka cannons so I'll be converting a tau drone to escort the warbot later on.

I wanted this to be the first model completed as it will likely serve as the army's centerpiece, that and I'll be entering into a painting competition at Warhammer World next month.

I look forward to hearing your feedback on my conversions and hope you'll be interested in following this project log.

Followed the previous two rounds as a lurker, I`ll try to contribute in a better way this round

What style of IG army are you aiming for? Threadhead or Aircav spam (or gork/mork forbid a footslogging infantery list dug in )? Even if the current sensible build is aircav spam I vote for armoured coy with veterans. Use hydras for AA.

The warbot look fantastic but if he`s count-as warbiker he`s on the wrong base. Use a 40mm square base as the center and the cut a normal 40mm round base in two and glue on each end of the square one. If it`s 60mm the method still stands.

Looks goood, awesome concept and clever conversion for the grot guardsmens. I agree with you that they should get a bit dirtyer and need more orky (or grotty) weapons. Good luck on that!

Looking good! Time to refresh my grots as well I guess. I love that warbot, the cc arm in particular is a very nice use of the killa kan arm.

KEEP DEM ROLLIN!
Most of my tanks are being shelved due to their lack of effectiveness in games now, but I'll be touching up a few tanks with sponging and weathering powders for the new army.

2 Doom-Vees (Chimeras)
These converted tanks were my pride and joy created from a leman russ upgrade sprue, plasticard, wheels from a poundland toy and a few other bitz. I created 5 fire points in the form of the windows on the side and front, plus the heavy flamer underneath. Each Doom-Vee transport had a different set of cargo and lookout grot and we're the core of the old army.

1 Battle Bruzer (Leman Russ Demolisher)
The army will also include a Leman Russ Demolisher. Back when I originally made the grots the Leman Russ was the most difficult tank to come up with a good conversion for. I want to convert everything so I tried to do a half track using a pair of shortened chimera tracks and a large pair of wheels and it failed. The tracks turned out to be too long so I had no where to fit the wheels on, however they were just the right length to replace the leman russ tracks themselves.

I later converted it into a plasma russ with some tesla like energy weapons which are a risky investment in 6th edition, but given that the main barrel is converted from a demolisher turret perhaps I should keep the barrel rather than go with a boring basic demolisher turret?

2 ThundaSquig Gunships (Vendettas)
Of course the flyers are staying in the army, in the form of my 2 Thunda Squig gunships!
Based on an Osprey the engines are made out of Manticore missiles with the hell strike missiles from the Valkyrie underneath them, throw in some extra bits and some plasticard and you have a Osprey Vendetta conversion. The engines and weapons are magnetised so can be moved about the bottom one being it going at full speed and the middle left representing it not moving at all. Also has a small grotcopter escort to represent the optional heavy bolter sponsons.

There is one more tank but I'm considering redoing the conversion, I'll upload that at a later date but with luck the fully painted Warbot conversion will be done before then.

DIZ IS A STOREE BOUT HOW DA GROTZ STARTIN REBELLIN!
One of my biggest achievements regarding the grot rebels was the creation of a background comic, I knew a written story wouldn't be read that much so I wanted to create a eye catching comic instead but I wasn't talented enough to do anything impressive with my rough drawn version. But I was lucky enough to get accomplished 40k comic artist Nacho Fernadez to draw up the final as his cartoonish art style was the perfect match for the wacky grots! I later coloured the final copies to create "DA GROT UPRISIN" comic. Here are the first 3 pages of the grot's backstory and I'll upload the other pages later in the log.

GROT REBELZ BIG AND SMALL!
I've been thinking of how to make the grots look less organised cause at the moment they look very 'rank and file' and I'd prefer the new ones looked more like mobs and warbands. I considered painting their clothing different shades of brown and grey so it looks like the grot gets given his armour and gun and that's it.

But I then had a better idea which is to add more variety to grot guard conversions in the squads. So along side the main grot trooper conversions there's gonna be beefier grots using catachan bitz, plus a few smaller grots using this 'groundpounder' conversion concept I created to use as infantry platoon guardsmen next to my veterans.

So the veteran squads will be made up of a mixture of these grots all painted in the same colours with maybe a few different shades.

What do you think?

GATHERIN DA GROT CLANZ? (IDEAS?)
As I mentioned I want to make the Grots a bit more green this time, meaning less looking like an organised guard army and more like a chaotic greenskin horde. I plan to have the veteran squads feature 3 to 4 variants of converted grot but still be recognizable as 1 squad, then over the weekend I had another idea.

Each squad will be a clan/gang of grot rebelz lead by a head honcho, basically what this means is each squad will have a their own logo, name and be modeled to show their own personality while remaining similar to the other veteran squads (they will all have the same equipment). Here's some ideas of clanz I came up with over Easter...

Name: Da Deff Diggaz
Wot dey do best: They dig anything from trenches to places to hide but love making pit traps for Orkz to fall in.
Appearance: Very dirty and armed with spades and pickaxes.

Name: Da Booty Huntaz
Wot dey do best: They love to loot and get the best bitz.
Appearance: Pirate hats, peck legs, eye patches and other small details.

Name: Da Boom Blastaz or Boom Bringaz? (what do you think? feel free to suggest a more explosive based name.)
Wot dey do best: BLOW STUFF UP!
Appearance: Most of the squad will have scars and look crazy plus all will be carry some form of explosives.

Name: Da Black Squigz
Wot dey do best: Follow Kapin Squigscream's orders and remain disciplined.
Appearance: Like well trained commandos.

Would anyone like to suggest another idea for a grot clan (name, appearance and skill) remember keep it grotty?

WEATHERING POWDER TROUBLES
The Warbot is painted up and just need a bit of weathering powder on the wheel thou I'm currently looking for some rubbing/surgical alcohol to coat it with to set it in place as suggest by most online tutorials. Problem is finding the stuff, gonna continue my search in town tomorrow. So with luck my next upload will be the completed Warbot!

KOLONEL GROTSKULL'S NEW SUIT!
Well here it is Kolonel Grotskull's new killy Warbot, took me over a week to paint but damn it looks dead ard!

I used sponging to add battle scratches to the armour and decided to give him glowing eyes which work a lot better than if I had left them dark. I also added the little details such as a Warboss kill count on the right shoulder and Grotskull spelt in Ork Glyphs on the left.
Of course his real base will be a 40mm biker base but that hasn't arrived so I use an old resin base for the miniature competition on Monday at Warhammer World.

WEATHERING POWDERS; ZOG IT!
Aside from trying to get the model damn near perfect I was also waiting for some forgeworld weathering powders to arrive. They did and I tried them out on a wheel sprue and I must say despite using a few different techniques I wasn't too pleased with any of the results. So instead I choose to use basic drybrushing rather than risk ruining the model. Hopefully I can arrange a small lesson on how to get the best out them while at Warhammer World tomorrow.

SUM BAD NEWS!
Sadly I'll be putting the grots aside for a while to work on converting some legio cybernetica robots for my Pre-Heresy Thousand Sons using the new forgeworld bots into suitable battlesuit proxies. So it maybe a while longer before you see another post on this log.

PROMOTION DEN DEPORTATION!
Well I've sold all my old Grot Rebel Squads and I'm ready to begin rebuilding the new and improved squads from scratch. Of course I wasn't going to part with neither of my existing Grot Generals; Grotskull Or Squigscream so I offered to create this special commander for the buyer to add to the command squad.

It also proved a good way to practice applying all the new skills I've recently acquired to my grot conversions. Next I plan to paint up the 3 types of grot that will make up each of the mobs to see if they work or not, hopefully you won't have to wait too long for those.

My Pre-Heresy Thousand Sons are finally done, so without further a do it's time to get this project rolling again...

THE NEW, MORE GREENER GROTZ!
One of the biggest problems with all of my previous grot rebel armies was they were too uniform and more like guard than greenskins, so after selling all my old squads I plan to make all the new infantry look more like greenskins.

First off is their appearance, I've been experimenting with other ways to convert other grots and created two more variants; the grunt (middle) who is converted from some Night goblin legs and high elf torso, then using a catachan upper body and skaven legs with cadian feet I created the brute (right). The squads will be made up of random assortment of these 3 types.
Also what greenskin would want to use a laser weapon with no kick or real boom, so I've converted the lasguns into a variety of sub-machine guns and rifles, each of which will be made to look a little different from the rest.

Each squad will be made to look like a small clan with a symbol and detail modeled on the entire squad so going from the left...
The Troopa is from the "Metal Eadz" clan who believe themselves to be a bit tuffer than other grots so they all wear helmets and wear a bit more extra armour.
The Grunt is from the "Boom Blastas" a clan that love explosions so every member of that squad will have some form of grenade or bomb on them, like the grot in the photo who has a missile in a pouch on his back.
The Brute is from the "Deff Diggaz who love to dig holes, trenches and set traps so all of them carry some form of digging equipment and will be drybrushed a bit more to make them look dirtier than the other squads.

What do you think?

ROKKITS AWAY!!!
With the main grotz being armed with Sub-Shootaz I thought I'd convert more orker grenade launchers, so I used the guard flamers as a base to convert some mini grot sized rokkit launchas.
The idea is all of the grot weapons will be converted from a fixed base and be slightly converted to be different from each other but still be recognizable by the opponent as the weapon it represents.

BRINGIN UP DA GUN WAGONZ
I've never really converted any heavy weapon teams for the grots except for “The Rokkit Wagon” in the previous army, before that it was just grots holding standard guard missile launchers.
But after the using Epic Land Raiders to convert mobile turrets to represent Plasma Cannon servitors for my Thousand Sons, so I decided to use them as the base for the Grot heavy weapon teams as well and thus the gun wagon was created...

This time I had the Land Raider facing backwards, each gun wagon will be customised to the squad so the Deff Diggaz' is equipped with a dozer blade and carry some equipment. The plan was to have the grot aiming the gun while pressing his feet against the land raider but that didn't work so I instead created a platform for him. I also made the Autocannon different by shortening the barrel and using a different ammo clip plus the sight and plating.

DA DEFF DIGGAZ
Well here is my first veteran squad The Deff Diggaz armed with shovels and pick-axes and will have an extra bit of drybrushing in certain areas to make them look more dirty. The Ead Honcho aka veteran sergeant is armed with a cybork drill arm, however can't think of a good name for him.

“Dez ere are da Deff Diggaz and dey love da dig! If derez anyding ya needz diggin from a hidin place
to a good trench dez are ya boyz. Courze I love it when da dig lota pit traps to snatch dumb orkz”

4 GROTZ DOWN!
2 Weeks and the first batch of new and improved Grots are done! The fabric was by far the most difficult part as I tried the previous paint scheme and it didn't work so I replaced it with a more dark brown. The resin bases have yet to arrive and I don't have any spare 25mm round bases so I'll wait till the whole squad's completed before basing them and adding some dirt to their boots.

DA DAKKA DRONE!
The only problem I could see with Grotskull's Warbot model is the fact while it represents the speed and toughness of a Warboss on a bike, there is no representation of the twin dakkaguns. I was going to put them on the model but I felt too much would have ruined it.

So Grotskull gets a Dakka Drone that will be mounted on a 25mm base and will run around with model, but will not count as an extra model and have any impact on the game. At first I tried to attach the dakka guns and skull to a basic tau drone base which proved difficult, then I fought nah, lets beef it up a bit! Which made it look a lot better.

EAVY GUNZ INCOMIN!!!
6 Grots down, only the 3 Brutes and the Head honcho to go. One of which was the Gun wagon ie my Grot Heavy Weapon team. I was a bit concerned about the paintjob on the metal and dirt effects but it seems to have worked out well.

KOLONEL'S GROTSKULL'S NEW DAKKA DRONE!
While I was painting up the gun wagon I decided to paint up Grotskull's Dakka Drone as well, I did consider having it represent a basic nob biker but decided it be better keeping it purely as a decorative model representing the Warboss biker (the Warbots) TL Dakkaguns.

So what do you think to my Dakka Drone and Gun Wagon?

WAT'Z YA TINK OF DIZ?
Though I hate to post just ideas I'm looking for a bit of feedback on a few concepts and would greatly appreciate to hear your thoughts on them.

NUMBA 1 - NEW WHEELS?
I love my Doom-Vee chimeras, but I'm considering replacing the 4 rubber wheels with 1 set of wheels and the tracks from the Battlewagon and turn them into half tracks. No, not because modelling restrictions set by GW as the Events team tend to bend the rules for the shake of creativity. But because it may look better and make the chimera a bit slimmer because it is a bit wide which of course complicates AV angles.

Also I'd be grateful if anyone with a battlewagon could tell me the height, length and width of the tracks and wheels because I don't want to order the bits and find out their too long?

Also I'm still looking to sell 2 of my old Doom-Vees so if you interested go here for more info; http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/536541.page

NUMBA 2 – FORT GROTZ!
At first I was thinking of having a kustom force field fence for my defence line but given how that would be a nightmare to model correctly and doesn't accurately represent a defence line for reasons of line of sight I decided to ditch it.

Instead I plan to make a defence line which when assembled in a square will look like a small fort. For the long sections I'm going to be using low walls from the City Of Death terrain with metal plated room above it so the grots can still see through them while still keeping the defence line 40mm tall, one of them will have a gate or perhaps one of the doors from the battlewagon kit. The short sections will be created using the actual defence line parts and 1 or 2 of them will have an ork prisoner strapped to it.

Regarding the turret I'll likely convert the base as a small bunker but not sure whether to use the Quad gun from my old Dakka Tanks or convert something new?

NUMBA 3 – WAAAGH KRUSTA MECHZ?
I love mecha and was thinking once the first army list was done I would go and create a small attachment of Tau gretchin allies. Featuring some Tau Tek Troopaz (Fire Warriors), Battlesuits like the Warbot and even 1 (or maybe 3 'evil laugh') grot mechs representing Riptides.
The idea would be to use the chaos defiler as a base and convert up my 'Waaagh Krusha Mechz' to look similar to the Glorft mechs from the series Megas XLR. Should be fun!

So what do you think, any thoughts?

DA BOSS OF DA DEFF DIGGAZ
Well the “Deff Digga” veteran squad is now complete except that they still need basing, due to the reasons stated in an earlier post. So I'm now waiting for the parts needed to create the bases for the rest of the squad, however I decided to use a few of the resin bases for my characters such as the squad sergeants. So here is the completed head honcho of the Deff Diggaz.

Dude needs a name thou and I can't think of a good one, someone did suggest Diglet? I'm also pleased with how the dirt effect came out and I look forward to making the rest of the squad look the same, till then however here's a fully painted Grunt, Troopa & Brute from the Deff Digga squad...

Next up is Kaptin Squigscream's Kommand Squad & possibly a WeirdGrot!

SQUIGSCREAM'S BOYZ
Here's the veterans for the Kommand Squad, featuring 1 of each type of grot trooper plus a standard grot. Their gun wagon is armed with a Zapp gun (lascannon) and because each squad's gun wagon is customized this one has a Warboss trophy head and whip, it would have pouches but I've ran out for them for the moment.

Also instead of having a squig in the squad like before I'm thinking of putting an attack squig on Kaptin Squigscream's base leaping over the ork glyph with the Kaptin either petting him, turning him lose or pointing in the direction of his "meal" whatever looks best.

DA BOSS OF ALL GROTZ!!!
Behold the one and true leader of all Grot Rebelz; Kolonel Grotskull!

This miniature was one of the very first conversions I created when I started the Grot Rebelz army back in 2006 and is still one of my favourite miniatures.
Now I will point out that the model was repainted by a friend of mine as a xmas present back when I redid the army in 2009, because of that I created Kaptin Squigscream to act as his proxy at tournaments in the interest of fairness regarding best army awards. Kolonel Grotskull is now instead represented by the Warbot conversion which he pilots.

I'm also experimenting with my new Nikon D50 professional camera I got for my birthday, and this seems a perfect model to try it out on.

DA TOS AFTERMATH
Well I've just been to Throne Of Skulls this weekend with my Pre-Heresy Thousand Sons, my final score was 1 Win, 1 Draw & 3 Losses. But 3 of those games where intenese down to the wire games so I really enjoyed the weekend. An old friend of mine joined me with his Ork army (which was massacred all 5 games) but won best miniature with his huge Warboss Biker seen below fighting Grotskull.

WOT YA MEAN 1 WEEK!!!
Normally tournaments state that a new codex has to be out at least a month before it can be used, but as I found out this week GW requires you to use the codex if it came out as soon as the weekend before the event.
Now this has got me really concerned especially with rumors going round that both Orks and Guard are due for a re-release most likely before TOS in March. While a codex change won't effect my allied Nob Biker squad too much, if the Guard codex drops veteran squads as a troops choice in favour of Infantry platoons like previous codexes I will be screwed as there is no way I could throw together replacement units before the tournament at such short notice.

What do you think?

STIKK WITH DA PLAN YA GITZ!
Given what I said above I'm going to stick to the plan of getting all the guard stuff done first and then decide on my orks allies when the book comes out, besides they should be a hobbit release in December and if that happens it should be a fantasy release for March next year.

DA BOSS' BOYZ
Well the Kommand Squad is complete and will be the only unit to be mounted on Resin bases, the rest of the army (except heavy weapons teams) will be mounted on scratch built bases to which I received a box full of all sorts of bitz and gubbinz to detail them.

It's also nice to compare them to the old Kommand Squad and see how much better my painting is from only a few years ago, also as mentioned before my friend Alex painted up Kolonel Grotskull as a xmas present and his masterclass paint job fits in with the rest of the army a lot better now.

DA BLAK SQUIG KOMMANDOZ
The Grots will be making a small appearance before TOS at the GW Kill Team event in December, so I'm going to be converting a tough boss to represent the guard character 'Sargent Harker' called 'Sargent Irongutz'. Just trying to think of how to convert his heavy bolter so far the best idea is to have him driving a gun wagon, may also convert a medic and a tek boy for the team.

ZAPP EM!
Every army has a model that the player loves the most and this has got to be my favourite so far, just a shame it wasn't completed last week I could have entered it into the TOS painting contest.

DA NEW HEROES OF DA REVOLUSHUN!
This week I've been working on some bad ass lookin gretchin to include in my Kill Team for the tournament in December.
My Kill Team is lead by the guard special character Sergeant Harker and I tried to find good way to have a single grot wielding a heavy bolter, in the end I decided just to give him his own gun wagon loaded up with pouches, bombs and other weapons (seen at the bottom).
However he looked so awesome I decided to make a 2nd copy of him this time on foot and wielding a standard bolter to use as an alternative commander.
Because every commando team needs a medic I also created the Mad Dok to represent my 'Feel No Pain' specialist.

Last but not least is the Weirdgrot now previously my Primaris Psyker was represented by just a night goblin with a staff, and that doesn't suit a greenskin psyker at all. So based off the Weirdboy from the 40k video games I decided to go with a more unstable looking psyker and given how they're always floating around I thought he should be chained up and and have a keeper similar to the ork Weirdboys. I also used a tyranid gaunt Adrenal Gland to give him a bigger brain. He's not in the Kill Team but will be used in smaller games.

THE DOK IZ IN!!!
Well here's the first specialist for my Kill Team; the Mad Dok! Tried a few new things with this model such as the blood splatter and liquid in glass effects, both have turned out nicely.

The dok is fitted with a backpack that holds both his bonesaw and trademark blasta (plasma gun) named “Mercee”. In the Kill Team he represents a veteran armed with a plasmagun with the 'Feel No Pain' special rule, sadly it is unlikely that I will use him in the actual army as a medic unless a codex update makes them worth taking. I converted the smaller plasmagun from a Forgeworld plasma pistol, lasgun and guitar wire, it was originally red with the name written on but it didn't work so I repainted it black.

I did have a 2nd bigger plasmagun in the work that will have 'ignore cover' but with all the wires and purple power source it reminds me too much of a noise marine weapon. So back to the drawing board, in the meantime I'll start work on Sergeant Irongut.

DA GROT REBELZ: Fully Converted Guard & Ork Army Project @ 2013/10/18 19:39:48

Post by: Proiteus

DIZ IZ MY GUNWAGON, DERE ARE MANY LIKE IT BUT DIZ 1 IZ MINE!
Well My Kill Team specialists are finished, so let's start with Sergeant Irongut! When I wrote the list for my Kill Team I decided to go with Sgt Harker because he seemed the perfect leader for a kill team tournament, he could dish out the punishment and the benefits he gave the whole squad. I tried to find away to equip a single Grot brute with a heavy bolter but none of the conversions so I created a customised gunwagon for the Kommando boss to ride on, and here it is...

Sadly I've been forced to use my old camera for these since the Nikon D50 is out of juice. Anyway I was so pleased with the his appearance I decided to create a version of him on foot to use as an alternative Guard commander. The model is painted but I wasn't too happy with the photos I got with the old camera so I'll wait till I can use the Nikon D50 for that.

DA SUPA BLASTA
In Kill Team you can give 3 (selected) special rules to a model or weapon, so I decided to arm one of my kommandos with a Plasmagun that ignores cover.
So I decided to convert a supped up Plasmagun to represent that it will chew through anything, the original weapon was converted from a cadian flamer and chaos plasma pistol but the cable went into a (car battery looking) power pack on the veteran's back. However with all the piping and glowing purple power source it looked to much like a noise marine's weapon so I decided to instead go with shoulder mounted weapon using the ork mekboy's blasta and here we are...

WE NEED SUM FORTZ
With the Kommandos done I've decided to take a break from the infantry and work on the Aegis Defence Line, as mentioned before some of the grots can't see over the original defence line so I decided to use the City Of Death small wall sections and girders to create some walls they could see through but still provide the same amount of cover.
I also used some plastic head pins to create tesla like poles, I also added some bolts to the front which are hard to seen in this rough photo. Only downside is the dang thing's too low! So I'll be looking to increase the height by mounting in on some plasticcard, and perhaps use some greenstuff to add some dirt against the walls.

By the way: Do you think I should add some spikes to the top of the girders on the defence line or leave them as they are?

GROT REBELZ DEFENCE LINE UPDATE
Someone suggested rather than spikes I add some barbed wire, which I thought was a great idea but I didn't have any to try it out with. But later that evening I was looking through my hobbyist tool box for some plastic tubing and with surprising convenience I found some which a friend of mine had given me years ago when he gave up the hobby. The end result is a huge improvement and really adds to the look and feel I was going for.

One of the ideas I had for the short sections of the wall were Ork Prisoners tied up to be tortured, teased and ironically used as meat shields. Both of their hands were to be secured in metal cuffs attached to the wall but as you can see they're too wide to fit on to the wall section neatly, so the other hand and waist will have to be chained to the wall. I'm still experimenting with this idea as I will have at least 1 ork prisoner featured in this defence line!

REBEL GROT DEFENCE LINE UPDATE: DA GATE?
When brainstorming the look of the Grot's defence line I decided to make it look like more a small fort or outpost than a simple wall or barricade. Of course an outpost needs a gate however because it is proxying a defence line it can't block line of sight. So here's are my ideas...

Da Draw Bridge
This was my original idea as a partly lowered draw bridge would not block line of sight or deny cover. I used leman russ barrels for the posts and Valkyrie parts for the fences, only downside to this design is the fact I can't effectively attach the draw bridge section to the posts so it would have to be mounted on a sanded plasticard base.

Eavy Armored Drawbridge
Ditching the converted posts for some Aegis defence line parts, this is easier as I only need to create a plasticard base to go between the two sections which I can then glue the draw bridge to.
I'm still experimenting with what to place on the small sections, ork prisoners or just some armour plates.

Da Gate
Reversed the original posts make a great gate thou a little low I can add barbed wire or something to the top of it. Course I can add some wall sections to either side to extend it to the correct length.

A Big Mesh Gate
I just stumbled on this idea while googling ork forts; it's a great idea by sandwiching wire mesh between two sheets of plasticard I can create a large gate with the Grot Rebel Star on. This won't block line of sight but will look the part, maybe difficult to pull of thou?

Let us know what you think to these Gate concepts?

They all look good! But if I had to rate them, drawbridge, a gate, a big mesh gate and then fortified drawbridge - though I suspect your version of a big mesh gate might rate it higher (ie second).

REBEL GROT DEFENCE LINE UPDATE: DA SHORT BITZ
Been working on a few ideas for the short sections of the defence line rather than simply converting the standard parts, and here they are...

Grot Watch Tower
Not bad little kit bash using 1 Ammo Crate, a set of Manticore ramps (which were going to be used for the killy stage's supports) and some Baneblade plates. I'm glad that I have a use for my comm gretchin as I doubt I'll be using my command chimera and he's a great model.

Da Killy Stage
Originally this was just going to be a raised platform but then I decided it was a great way to incorporate Ork Prisoners into the defence line, put'em on stage to be shot at with signs saying “shoot ere”! Still unsure how to chain him up without using the “metal mittens” as ork arm poses are restricted, so I'd be grateful for any suggestions regarding that?

Eavy Cover
Another idea I had for a short section was using the shoulder pad from an Ork Stompa as it's curved plates would be ideal for corners and the ends of the defence line. Course had to cut the bit of the bottom so it wasn't too tall and file the sides down a bit.

So what do you think? I might ditch the Killy Stage for another watch tower section?

PAINTIN DA WALL?
With the wall complete so it's time to decide on a scheme, so I threw together a few colour schemes in photoshop. Will suggested a rusted wall with red detailing like walls 4 and 5.
Personally I'm probably going to go with No 1 or 2 that way the battle damage and scars will be more visible, just need to make sure that the red isn't too strong. What do you think red or dark metal poles? I've got a pair of leftover walls to experiment on this week so will see how it goes.

FORT GROTX
Well my Grot Rebelz defence line is pretty much completed just need that 2nd stompa shoulder pad for the 4th short piece. Since the Orks tied up on a raised platform looked out of place I instead went with a metal section with a mounted banner I might also add some trophies from my closest victories later down the line. Note that the barbed wire will be attached with greenstuff and plasticard tubing when the wall is fully painted.

I'm going to start painting it tomorrow using the wall 2 paint scheme as it will be easier to add battle damage too, of course I plan to give it a good amount of weathering effects.

GRETCHIN SNIPERS
In addition to the veteran squad led by Sgt Harker my Rebel Grotz Kill Team also features 3 Ratling Snipers, so here are the Rebel Grot snipers better know as the “Rifle Runtz”
The problem was only one of the plastic grots had the look of a sniper so since I only needed 3 I decided to attempt to make them look different from each other.

With all the big critters in 40k these days I'm likely to convert more snipers in the far future.

BAD NEWS BOSS; DA WARBANDS DEYS CHANGIN!
Given this project's completion target is Throne Of Skulls in March I was greatly troubled by the rumor that the guard codex would be coming out that month, especially given that GW events demand you use the codex after it's launch like the space marines back in September and if so I'll have 1 or 2 weeks to update the army especially since White Dwarf will have barely any info.

A few changes will be manageable as I can invest spare points into the allied nob bikers, but the big problem is the veteran squads as they are a main part of the army as such I'm worried about them being used as Elites again leaving my army with no troops. It something I would expect as GW would be able to sell more guard squad sets if Infantry Platoons were the only decent troops choice. Course I've been watching BOLS for new info and recently this came up...

BOLS Guard Rumor Thread wrote:Moving on from the veteran weapon squads re-boxing, it is believed that they will be changing their position on the battlefield. With smaller squad sizes, veterans seem to be taking a fire support role, that focuses on battlefield specialisation.

While I love the idea of specialization which is what my warbands are all about, the smaller squad sizes (likely 5 man) are a deal breaker and given how veterans in the previous codex were small fire support units like the grot vets shown below it could happen!

WOT DA DO!?!
As you can imagine this is really making me reluctant to continue work on my guard infantry as some of it could wind up as wasted effort when the time comes.

MORE ORKS OR TEK
The other option is to focus on more allied units, maybe a few enslaved ork shoota boys in a battlewagon. Or I can do project Waaagh Krusha which was a Tau force with allied guard attachment with 3 Grot Mechas representing Riptides. Someone recently suggested I expand on the Warbot conversion and create the Grot Kommitee in battlesuits for a Farsight Bomb which was tempting.

GO UNARMED!
Basically I would keep 3 of the veterans in the next two squads unarmed, that way I can give them special weapons if they're veterans or lasguns if they are a basic infantry squad. But if veterans are going to be 5 - 6 man squads perhaps it would be best to save the big brutes for that role and keep my main squads consisting of mainly troops and grunts and save the big muscled brutes for these rumored small fire support veterans squads.

I'd be grateful to hear you thoughts on this matter?

I saw those IG rumors on BoLS too. I do like the idea of your troopa-grunt-brute sizes, but I'm not sure I trust too many BoLS rumors. They don't have the best track record. Wouldn't the average IG player want more than 5 guys to suck up lost wounds?

I'd love to see how you represent tau with the grots. I think it's a great idea to use the brutes for the armless guard. You could still have a troops or two in the vet squads, tho, to keep them looking less uniform.

That defense wall is fantastic. I really like the idea of the stage, but I can see the issues with it too. Have you tried putting them in front of a curtain of sorts? Say… paint a big target on the gargant shoulder pad and shackle an ork to it… maybe you could use the fully extended pistol arms and have the ork tied at the wrist with the "chains" going back over the wall. Like the grots throw him over. I love the radio tower too.

I like how your snipers are turning out, but don't forget you can extend those barrels too. The kroot barrel looks pretty sweet on that guy.

DA WALL'Z GOIN UP BOSS!
The defence line is coming on nicely just need to wait for the 2nd stompa shoulder pad to arrive. In the end I went for the red paint scheme as it contrasts the checked pattern very well and ties it's to the rest of the army. The watchtower hut was a bit of a pain and went from being red on the sides and bronze at the front to black, also the hanging fabric didn't look too good so that's on the back now.

Will be adding the desert sand weathering effects when the full wall is complete, might add a scorched mark or two to the plates on the watchtower, looks too clean.

BOOM BLASTAS INCOMIN!
Due to some last minute changes to my Kill Team I need a 2nd squad of veterans as sadly Harker isn't worth the 55pt price tag when his 'Catachan Devils' rule isn't in effect. So here is the 2nd Grot Rebel Warband; The Boom Blastaz cause they'll always been greenskins who love blowing stuff up.

I'm glad I came up with the warband idea as it proving enjoyable to give each grot unique at this rate no gretchin will look the same (unless I start making platoons).

DA DEATHSKULLS AV LOOTED ME WALL!
The defence line has been put aside so I can get the 'Boom Blastaz' ready for the Kill Team tourney next month. However that has been another problem I ordered a 2nd Ork Stompa shoulder pad so I can have one at each end of the defence line but in was lost in the post, worst it was the last one!
I did consider replacing the draw bridge with another section of the wall given how cool they look and creating a smaller entrance for the 4th small section.
But since I brought the battlefield bits sprue I had a tank trap left so I decided to convert that into a wall section which fits in quite nicely making the defence line only 5mm short of the standard 72cm length. Now I need to decide on two things 1st; The spikes are going to be dark metal so what colour to paint the plates in between? 2nd; Should I add a squig flap?

I only sold the infantry, I still have the tanks that will be improved later on in the project. The reason I got rid of the old infantry was simple, I had already repainted them once when I redid the army for the current codex therefore a 3rd paint job would greatly lessen the model's original details. There was also the fact I wanted to give the army a new less uniform appearance to make them look more like a rebellion and less like a red Imperial Guard army with gretchin instead of humies.

Also I don't like having unused models, if they're going to simply be stored away with no possible use in the future I'd rather sell them so someone who will use them. The money I got from selling the old models greatly help me stock up on bits to make the new ones, speaking of which I'm still looking to get rid of 2 of my 5 Doom-Vee chimeras as I'm unlikely to field all 5 again if anyone is interested: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/536541.page

DA FORT NEEDZ A TOWER!
A few weeks ago I showed a cool Ork Quad gun conversion built mostly from Plasticard that I planned to recreate for my Grot Rebelz defence line. However when it comes to working with plasticard I've never been too comfortable, so I decided to play to my strengths and find components that would work well together to create a similar structure. The main part being the main gun plates from the 'Stormlord' baneblade variant with some Leman Russ sponsons on the side and the glass dome turret from the ork bommer on top.

I'll convert the guns to be autocannons and fill in the gaps as well as give it a more battle damage and greenskin appearance. But while it looks fantastic and is exactly what I was going for I'm worried about it gamewise; Do the sponsons make it too bulky?

As you can see when placed next to an standard quad gun the turret and sponsons tend to make it bigger, the last thing I want is to be accused of converting for advantage purposes. Cover shouldn't really be an issue when it comes to quad gun placement, but if it did I can always draw line of sight from the star instead of the turrets plus not intentionally hide anything behind the tower itself.

Might have to remove it from the stand and mount it on a 40mm square base, but then it doesn't look right behind the defence line. What do you think both as hobbyists and gamers?

Honestly? I think it's lookin' fine just the way it's going - though some rotator cuffs between the sponsons and the tower would be nice, so that one could at least IMAGINE the guns elevating.

GROT BASE BUILDIN 101
Da Quad Gun: Well I've completed the final and central part of my defence line, the quad gun. Now because I was going with a more fort/outpost like appearance instead of a defensive Wall I wanted to make the quad gun look more like an actual building (from a gretchin's perspective). I was then inspired but this awesome Ork Quad Gun conversion, however I don't have those kind of plasticard skills so I played to my strengths and found the best bits to build one instead. I found the parts from the Stormlord's cannon and leman russ' sponsons wenT together perfectly.

The biggest pain was getting the plasticard the right shape to go underneath the top turret. Also I was originally going to add the tips of the autocannon barrels to end of the guns but felt that made the guns appear too long in contrast to the tower.
There are still some finishing touches to be made such as green stuffing the gaps on the sponsons and adding steps to get to the door on the side but all and all it's a great centre piece for the defence line.

Da Shield/Power Generator: I ordered a few bitz online to try different conversion ideas for the quad gun tower, one of which was the large Stormsword cannon. But when the other design worked out I decided to turn it into an greenskin like generator to use as the objective that I'll placed behind the defence line. I then added the tesla coils with the top one being removable and it became a shield generator, I then added a large on/off switch for laughs.

AGENT SPOOKUMZ IS COMIN!
Nearly all of the 18 man Kill Team is ready for next saturday's Kill Team tournament, all I need now is to update and repaint Agent Spookums to represent a squad leader. That way he can lead them to victory by hiding at the back and out of sight like a ninja, seriously there no way a guard veteran squad sergeant will kill anything and he's worth 2pts if killed.

WE NEED A HQ...ON WHEELS!
When the Baneblade first came out I wanted to convert one into a mobile Grot Rebel headquarters but was put off by the fact it would hardly be used. Now Escalation has come out and has been approved for Throne Of Skulls use I'm now looking at the concept again.
The idea; to convert a Baneblade into the biggest Grot Mega Tank ever based of the forgeworld model. The trick will be placing all the turrets to make it look less like a tank and more like a tradional battleship (with tracks) whist still having room for a command bridge. Also I need to decide which one to take it will have to be one with a main turret and not a fixed gun.

At first I thought about saving it for after the main army was complete but with such powerful weapons around my 550pt allied Nob Biker squad and Warboss is starting to look a little...fragile so there is a chance I may build the super heavy instead of the nob bikers.

ALRIGHT YA SNEAKY GITZ, GET SNEAKY!
Well I'm off to the Kill Team tournament tomorrow and who better to lead them that Agent Spookums, I was going to make the Boom Blastas' Ead Honcho the Kill Team leader, but since my leader is going to just hide to avoid giving my opponent an easy 2 victory points might as well go with the ninja.

WE GOT IT BOSS WE'Z GOT IT!!!
Well I attended the Kill Team tournament yesterday at Warhammer World and it proved to be very enjoyable. 7 Games were fun even the 3 I lost, with some close calls

Game 1 Vs Space Marine Bikers
Learning from a practice game all the grots took to the upper floors of ruined buildings with 1 or 2 grots on the ground floor to bait them into assault and kill them with dangerous terrain tests, funny thing it actually did.
Victory!

Game 2 Vs Space Wolves
Worst Warhammer World game ever as the kid I was playing against cheated in every possible way; from over moving to time wasting. He argued with me everytime I corrected him on obvious mistake and he even wanted to call the game quits with 3 minutes to go whilst his models were on the objectives. Of course I shot all my specialists weapons at the 2 scouts on the objective, he then “moved” his leader all the way to the objective and took the game, at that point I couldn't be bothered to argue and just put a complaint in about him.
In all the years I've been to 40k tournaments I've never played against an opponent who has resorted to cheating, guess this round made up for that in kind.
N/A

Game 3 Vs Guard
Very basic game against a veteran and storm troopers squad, not much terrain on the board except 3 large building so first few turns were pure movement before a massive and intense firefight!
Draw!

Game 4 Vs Necrons
Kid surprisingly using the old Necron codex with 10 Necron warriors with hit and run and eternal warrior. In the interest of sportsmanship I decided to keep some boys out in the open, nevertheless they were all very difficult to put down in the end.
Victory!

Game 5 Vs Space Wolves
Not much to say except had a thunderwolf rampaging through my lines while a lone wolf and grey hunters secured the objective. Shot them off but the lone wolf remained, in a gamble I had my plasma gun specialist leap out of cover and rapid fire him, having failed to kill him and knowing that the grot was likely to die next turn he charged the lone wolf... and wounded him and survived combat. It wasn't till we were adding up the score that I realised that I had unwittingly contested the objective with that charge and drew the game.
Then shortly after my opponent found me and told me cause the lone wolf didn't die I got an extra point and won the game.
Victory!

Game 6 Vs Tau
Awesome Game with too much detail to go into but the highlight was my veteran sergeant running up to a piranha throwing grenades then blowing it and himself up in combat. Still nothing could stop his bad ass Battlesuit leader.
Lost!

Game 7 Vs White Scar Bikers
OH GOD THE HORROR! Bikes parked in the building on the objective and would not be moved, even by 9 grenade lobbing grots. Still an entertaining game.
Lost!

Game 8 Vs 6 Necron Wraiths
Setup my Kill Team with most of the grots on the 2 and 3 floor of a ruined building with some guys on the ground floor in LOS, the game got interesting when the wraiths got close and with the grots throwing grenades. Surprisingly it was a close game against such a competitive list as it came down to break tests he barely passed his first one and then I was forced to take one the next turn and failed it. A Great way to end the day.
Lost!

Well that and winning Best Kill Team!

So if not for that 2nd game the day would have been perfect, thou even with that awful game the day was still fantastic and I look forward to the next one. Now for Throne Of Skulls!

LET IT SPLODE, LET IT SPLODE, LET IT SPLODE!
Due to Xmas working hours, family visits, Xmas shopping and other commitments I'm running a bit behind on my Gretchin Deadlines but I was able to get the Boom Blastas Warband done before Christmas. Like the Deff Diggas the Boom Blastas are just a simple Veteran Squad with an autocannon and grenade launchers, while the pervious Warband/Squad had shovels and we're very dirty these guys are loaded up with a variety of explosives.

One of the biggest complements I got from a lot of players at the Kill Team tournament was how much they loved how each grot had their own character. Making each Grot troopa look different from the others and giving him his own unique look is both fun and stops the squad building process from feeling repetitive and boring.

With luck I'll be able to get the defence line completed before the end of the year and then it on to the 'Booty Huntaz'!

LET'Z GET FESTIVE!
Who's up for sum Xmas Squig?

Hope you all had a good Xmas yesterday. I was surprised to get this interesting Christmas present yesterday from my sister who does a lot of cosplay work, it’s a lucky squig mascot for the tournaments I attend with my Grot Rebelz.

Little guy also came with a fitting and optional helmet, it’s a child’s toy army helmet that will be repainted black with a red star on. Might even convert a squig miniature to look just like him and make it an objective marker for relic missions.

NOW DAT'S A FORT!
My Aegis Defence Line is finally complete & I doubt I'll be replacing it with anything else anytime soon! My aim was to make it look like a outpost/fort instead of a defence line and when setup in a square it's certainly looks like an outpost & I love it!

I'm really starting to love chequered patterns they're very orky and while time consuming easy to do. Once the army is done and I don't need to make any sudden changes I'll be adding a small recruitment poster to the blank side of the Quad gun.
Now to get back to making my 3rd and final squad of rebel Gretchin before making the Nob Bikers, after that it just adding improving the 4 vehicles and I'll be ready as I can be for TOS.

SUPPORT DA REBELLION
I've uploaded the defence line at fortress to the Dakka Dakka gallery so be sure to follow the link and give it a gud rating!

WORKIN ON DEM TANKZ BOSS
Once I've replaced all the infantry and created the Nob Bikers I'll start upgrading the tanks, the Thunda-Squig gunships are simply getting a touch up on their paintjob but other tanks will be getting some more orky modifications.

Battle Tanks
I'll be looking to convert my tanks to look more like the old epic ork vehicles such as the old 'Gobsmasha' (Demolisher) and convert leman russes to look like 'Bonebreaka' tanks, just need to add Deff Rollas to them.

Support & Artillery Tanks
All support tanks will be using the old Dakka Tank as a base, converting a weapon mount and ammo wagon to match the unit be in a griffon, manticore or medusa.

Chimeras
An improvement I'll be making to my Chimera will be to replace the Poundland toy wheels with those from the Ork Battlewagon. Thought about making 1 with 4 wheels and another with 6, what do you think?

BRUTAL KUNNIN KARDZ
In my previous army project I created Warlord and Psychic power cards using a magic card template and some artwork from the Horus Heresy Visions book for my Pre-Heresy Thousand Sons. For this project I've been lucky enough to find a high quality pdf of the 'Digganob' rulebook, the Gorkamorka game expansion that introduced the original Grot Rebelz. So I've been extracting, editing and colouring some of the grot artwork for use on army lists, fluff sheets and of course some Warlord Trait Cards. Or as the grot's call it “Brutal Kunning”

I'll have these printed and lamenated in time for the 3rd generation grot's first game in a 750pt campaign down at my local GW store this month.

ORKS BOTZ ACTIVATE!!!
Ever since I came up with the idea of having Kolonel Grotskull piloting a Warboss Mecha I decided to include some enslaved Orks in the army. But the chances of an ork following a gretchin's orders seemed unlikely with shock collars and other torture devices so I decided they'd be enslaved and altered with cybork bitz.

Since the Nob Bikers would be armed with different weapons I used some Bits from Forgeworld to create the back mounted weapons to represent the Warbike's Dakkacannons. The heads are created from Tau Battlesuit shoulder-pad, Ork Jaws and the value of a guard flamer backpack for the eye. Trying to line up both guns to aiming the same direction was the biggest pain of all.

& These guys are big, they tower over space marines as you can see here...

Overall a great bodyguard unit for Kolonel Grotskull's Warbot, and depending on what the next Ork codex brings I might expand on this idea and make a full biker/ork bot army.

Question thou; If I was your opponent would you mind me using 40mm bases instead of Biker bases?

Those cyborks look brutal as all get out! Brilliant conversion, tho I think the one on the far left should get an iron gob too. The splice between the shoulder pad and ork mouth looks really off… maybe it's the angle?

Crazy Cyborks great conversions and those Tau pads work a treat as to the guy on the left maybe a little PC strip around the bottom of the pad meets jaw would work.

As to the bases I cant help mate as I don't play, sure most people would not mind though.

Great looking ! What do you use for their "legs" ?

I only play casual games, so the rule of cool would override the "wrong base" problem without any hesitation !

As for tournaments, I cannot say...

Honestly, I would prefer if they were on the correct base. But for a casual game, I wouldn't refuse to play you or complain. The difference in base size probably wouldn't have an effect in most games.

DA GROT REBELZ: Fully Converted Guard & Ork Army Project @ 2014/01/14 22:33:02

Post by: Proiteus

Well in the end I've decided to play it safe and go with the bike bases, someone told me that because of the way they are modeled not having them on biker bases can cause people to think their infantry. Placing them on the correct bases means anyone at first glance will know that they're Nob bikers.

Thou someone did suggest I create a patch to proxy Tau Battlesuits lol

Also here's a question: What colours should I paint the head, gob and centerplate (where the eye is) on the bot heads? Just to let ya know the shoulder pads and plate around the waist is going to be red?

DA GROT REBELZ: Fully Converted Guard & Ork Army Project @ 2014/01/15 09:15:51

Post by: lone dirty dog

How creative with the colour do you want to be ?

If the waist plate and shoulders are red I would say white or black head with the alternative centre section being black or white, jaw some kind of metallic finish, chequered patterned or even red.

What colour are you painting the vision device on the head ? I thought you could do a mix of red and yellows maybe just a thought.

Also what parts did you use to attach the wheels and body together by the way ?

If you are going to use bike bases this would allow for a little scene setting and artistic play, have you considered angling one on the base as if it is almost skidding at speed.

BIKER BASES!
Since I realized that while 40mm bases suited the models it was too easy to mistake them for infantry rather than bikers, so I decided to switch to biker bases instead but trying to fill the unused space on the biker bases effectively is proving to be a bit of a challenge.

I ordered one of the wounded orcs from the Empire Archers kit and it seemed only fitting he go on the mad dok's base, I did try to have him screaming at the Orkbot but the head won't sit at that angle so I settled for him yelling for someone to help him. I'll probably add a discarded choppa or gun on the base as well.

Another idea I had was to use one of the epic wagons I had previously used for Ruff Riders back from when I first made the grot army, the grot gunner fits the role of driver perfectly but I'm worried a grot driving a kart alongside the boss and his bodyguard just doesn't look right and would work better as an objective. What do you think?

I can't give enough love for everything you do! I love well-done counts-as models, and since my brother plays Orks I keep sharing your conversions as inspiration. I think he's warming to the idea of doing something eventually - keep on being a great inspiration.

I also have tons of respect for the 'aesthetic' touches, like the psychic cards and the photoshopped art pieces. I'm working on a 'codex' for all of my counts-as units, and trying to make it look similarly official and appealing. I'd love for you to take a look at it when it's done, since I think the idea is right up your alley.

Keep up the inspiring work!

WAT YA DOIN, AN ORK BOT KAN'T BE DA BANNER WAVER!!!
Nob Bikers are coming on slowly, with luck they'll be ready in time to lead my army in a 1000pt tournament at Warhammer World on the 17th this month.

Originally I decided to not include the grot in the go-kart on the biker base behind the Nob Biker cause he really had no purpose to be with the squad and looked out of place so I replaced him with a liberated gretchin on foot screaming at the sky. However the Waaagh Banner pole isn't coming out as well as I had hoped so I came up with an alternative idea. Give the Nob Biker a big shield instead and make the Grot in the go kart behind him the banner waver. I'll see how this idea turns out as I've ordered a few small flags and banners to experiment with, as for the shield it's certainly adds some character to the Nob Biker.

1 Week to go and the Nob biker conversions are nearly complete, for example 'Berserker' below.
All that is left is the coils and bases (including details such as the ork and kart), I tried the copper coil with silver highlights on one of them and I'm eager to get some feedback? I chose this over a glowing version because Ork Blasta's rarely glow and it unlikely to be mistaken for a plasma weapon.

So what do you think, please let me know?

ORK BOTZ ATTACK!!!
Well it's been a busy week of painting as I've tried to get these guys ready in time to spearhead the Grot Rebelz at Warhammer World on Monday.
As you can see there have been some changes to the models; The first being that I've mounted them on biker bases instead of round 40mm to make it perfectly clear that they are Nob Bikers, this is due to the fact their appearance can easily be mistaken for heavy infantry. The other change was the Waaagh Banner, it just didn't look right! So since I needed to fill the empty space on the bikers bases with something, I decided to have a Gretchin Waaagh Banna waver mounted in a kart so he can keep up with da botz.
The Ork then got a Shield instead which looks a lot cooler and gives him some character. Seemed also a good idea to fill the mad dok's base with a unfortunate ork that just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Now just 1 more squad to do and then it's just some touch up on 4 of the tanks and some objectives, then I'll be ready for Throne Of Skulls!

HUZZAH!
One of my biggest fears was that the guard codex would come out before Throne Of Skulls meaning sudden changes to my army, I'm both thrilled and relieved to see Knight Titans being released next month which I recommend you check out!.

Brilliant! Great move to put them on biker bases... and I think it suits them better as it helps give the illusion of linear motion.

Outstanding

Those are completely awesome, and fantastic paintjob to match. When I get back to my cyborks I'll be looting some of this

YOU R A PIRATE!!!
The final squad for the Grot Rebelz has been created and like the others it has it's own theme and personal look and that look is Pirates & thieving gitz! For Grots who love a good looting, think of them as the Deathskulls warband of the rebellion.

I'cw enjoyed giving each grot in the army it's own unique look, certainly makes creating the 3rd squad feel less like a chore. I look forward to seeing what new squads the upcoming guard codex brings for me to toy with. Also the Squad leader's hat took quite a few tries to get right, that is why he is the only one with a green stuffed hat!!!

The Ork Botz look great. I love the Dok Bot looming over a new member of the rebellion. Also, the gunz look great. They don't don't come off at all like plasma gunz. Great conversions!

The new skwad looks great. Great representation of the deffskullz clan. Lootin' and Gunz!

Your thread really makes me want to work on my grot army again. Thanks man.

Well everything is going fantastically well, I'm half way through the last squad leaving 22 days to update and create some objective markers. Well, that is what I'd like to say however.....

WARHAMMER WORLD EVENT TEAM BANNED MY NOB BIKERS!!!
After mentioning my intentions to go to Throne Of Skulls with my Grots to someone I know, I was made aware of the new 'Warrior's code's strict rules on proxies and how the event team have been enforcing it lately.
I wasn't worried since the grots were included in the WW event pack as a ideal example of a converted army in the past, but I thought it best to get the green light so I emailed them some pictures. The Grots not a problem however they've banned my use of the Ork allies on terms that it will cause confusion when fielded with a Imperial Guard army using gretchin.

I can understand where they're coming from, but it's only 6 miniatures and with the exception of the Warbot all clearly modeled as orks and with a different appearance to the gretchin guard army, I'm mentioned this and the fact most opponents will understand when given a copy of my army list. Plus I had very little time to create replacement and thus pleaded to be allowed to use them this once, their reply was...

After consulting with the team I'm afraid that our concerns are uniform so the answer is no. I understand that you are confident that you can explain the difference but that does not change the reality that the models being used are from the same codex, but actually aren't.

So this has left me feeling frustrated and a little down as that a month's work wasted plus I'm in trouble with a 515pt hole to fill in just under 22 days!

Three options remain, which will depend on how much time I have left after the last squad and 4 vehicles have been painted.
Option 1: Baneblade Battle Cruiser – Convert a Baneblade up as a Battle Cruiser on land which will fill up the gap nicely, but will require a lot of work and not something I want to rush!
Option 2: More Tanks – I have several tanks leftover from the previous version of the army so I might be able to improve and repaint 3 or 4 to replace the Nob Bikers.
Option 3: Take the Thousand Sons... Again!

We'll have to wait a see, diz been a sad day!

Lies! The unit is thematic, characterful and executed with both careful forethought and consummate skill. Just because a few GeeDubbers underrate the imaginations of their players doesn't devalue your great work on these lads! Though I suppose it does still mean you're stuck pulling together a fix in less than a month

I'm not sure I can see where they're coming from no that ruling :/

But if that's the case, let's focus on what can be done.

How's your heavy firepower? Would you be better suited to use one super heavy or multiple smaller tanks.

Multiple smaller tanks sounds more ideal, but a super heavy absorbs A LOT of incoming fire. So it may be more suited to keep the rest of the army kicking.

BATTLE BRUISER PLANZ
With the latest development my best option seems to be investing in a Baneblade since the alternative is repainting another 5 tanks with 10-15 days. So I've been sketching up ideas for my Battle Bruiser!
I'll be converting the Baneblade into a battleship on land similar to the Grot Mega Tank. The plan is to the use the Stormlord build to create a main compartment with the main turret on top and a door where the gun usually goes. I'll then use two ork bomma wings to create the bow and create a deck from plasticard and other bitz. On the front deck will be the demolisher cannon and the twin linked heavy bolter will be split up into two small turrets on both the port and starport (still counting as 1 thou), on the rear platform I'll mount an autocannon as a small turret rather than on the main turret and add a watch tower from the stompa.

The main problem will be attaching the main turret to the top of the tank and also thinking of a way to create a suitable volcano cannon weapon for when I wish to use it as a shadowsword, so far my best idea is a massive tesla coil on top like a main mast or using the defiler upper body as the mount for the barrel?

With luck I'll be able to create this a lot quicker than repainting 4 or 5 vehicles and I can add other details later on.

LOOTIN AND BOOTY!
With this 3rd and final veteran squad all my infantry are now complete, the Booty Huntaz; a warband for gretchin that love a good lootin and riches.

Decided to change the Bandit on the left who originally had a sword, but after a recent discussion on the model's from an opponent's perspective I've decided to avoid kitting out any of the models in anyway that could confuse what weapons their armed with. Besides he looks more badass with the metal fist.

Now on to the vehicles, which thanks to a new sponging technique I've learnt may go rather quickly which leaves just the Baneblade to do in... 15 days!

BATTLE BRUISER'S PROGRESS
Two long modelling sessions and the Battle Bruiser is taking shape, all it needs now is it's sponsons, turrets and a few other details. When it came to attaching the main turret I decided it was better to build up a mechanism with cogs and other bitz under the turret than try and remove the details off the hull, I then attached the turret using two large magnetic disks. I'm also working to magnetise the upper hull so it can be swapped out for a one with the main gun attached if I desire to use a shadowsword in the future.

The autocannon that was going to go on the back was been replaced with a large chimney, so it will instead either be attached as a small turret on top of the main one like on the ork battlewagon, or be a represented by a grot manned tripod mounted autocannon on the landing pad.
Speaking of which that was the last thing added, the kopta platform adds to the battleship like feel and may include the little Grot Kopta as an optional detail, I say optional because I'm worried adding the kopta might make the back look too cluttered?

10 DAYZ TA GO!!!
A few tweaks and the Baneblade is now pretty much complete, all it needs is a small autocannon turret on top of the main gun and it will be good to go. Other details such as crew and the helicopter which will be getting a few changes will depend on what time I have left. I was surprised at how well the Zaap guns practically slotted into place on the lascannon turrets.

Now all that left is to get it tidied up and painted within 9 days!

I know it's a bit late to suggest an alternative, given you've already started on the sooper grot tank, but perhaps for next time, if they object to the Orks because they look like your Guard that are Orks, maybe you could make Orks that are Guard, like Aliens powersuits or Ogryn-ish Ogre Kingdoms Nobz?

That said, this army was the inspiration for my own foray into both 40k and mass conversion. I stuck with the Ork codex because everyone in my area plays Guard, but the roots remain the same. Thanks man, keep on keepin' on.

Viva la revolucion!

Just read all this from start to finish and I actually got quite mad when you announced that your kickass nob bikers wouldn't be allowed. Don't let that discourage you, anyone I know (or even any actual players at the tournament you are going to, im sure) wouldn't have a problem with facing these, I mean they are probably the fluffiest allies out there! you will get other chances to use them. But yea id be miffed to if I had my list complete then had to build something under pressure...

On the plus side now we get to watch you put together a grot infested land ship baneblade. Best of luck.

7 DAYZ TO GO!!!
Working hard to the point it's feeling less like a hobby and more like a job, anyway I'm grateful for being taught the sponging technique as it has really sped up the repainting of the old vehicles and looks great, going to sponge the Battle Bruiser tomorrow. Sadly I'll likely won't have time to upload any quality pictures till after Throne Of Skulls.

GIVE UZ SUM FEEDBACK
Been working on the Doom-vees and would like some feedback on the new wheels, keep in mind they'll be a lot more dirty when their finished and the black strip on the hull will have a chequered pattern. Not sure if the front rounded wheels look right and thinking of just using the more bulky ones at the back?

Anyway back to painting!

DA KUMBUSTCHUN ENGINE!
Well got the army completed in time for Throne Of Skulls, and while the Battle Bruiser needs a bit more work and both the Leman Russ and Vendetta need some glyphs and chequered patterns the Doom-vees will be uploaded tomorrow.

By the way my Battle Bruiser (Hellhammer Baneblade variant) got blown up every game and as a result I didn't win any of them and it was later nicknamed the combustion engine. As a guard player it would have been depressing but as a Grot player it was funny and enjoyable. Some funny moments included a single gretchin charging at Lysander out of desperation or a leman russ getting immobilised on the defence line wall in front of it on turn 1 which we decided was due to the grot being unable to reach the pedal lol.

Got nominated for best army but the overall winner was a truly stunning Tyranid army with organic fortifications including a landing pad that looked just stunning, you can see his work here: http://40kaddict.blogspot.co.uk/

DA DOOM-VEE MKII
Well here are some photos of the new and improved Grot Doom-Vee Transports that represent my chimeras, completed at about midnight before Throne Of Skulls!
Thanks to a fellow hobbyist teaching me the sponging technique I was able to build up on the previous paint job rather than completely repaint the model, which given my time restrictions I was very grateful for!

Basically I went over the old paint job with a 50/50 wash of Nuln Oil and Lanmian Medium in the creases before sponging over 2 layers of red with part of a washing up sponge, followed by some fiery orange edge highlighting using a leftover piece of pluck foam.
Battle damage was done using a similar method for the dark brown then painting the metal on. The chequered pattern on the side really adds to the vehcile, I also added Ork glyphs on the side rather than actual english which can be read as 'Love loot' since this is the transport for the Boota Huntaz hence the chest. As I mentioned before I choose to to use the ork Battlewagons wheels because the previous rubber wheels were likely to be difficult to paint to a standard to match the rest of the vehicle, it also makes the conversion's width more accurate to the actual model for armour facings. As you can see from the image below it is a vast improvement on the previous version...

Similar to the squads the chimera conversions were made to a tad bit different from each other with one getting six wheels, it did have a dozer blade but the model is too far down for it to connect at the right angle.

I'm excited for the new guard battlewagon and will likely be getting at least one to convert, someone also suggested I make the heavy bolters removable and consider using the Doom-vees to represent the new guard transports but I'll wait till I have the codex in hand first.

.

ROLLIN IN DA BATTLE TANKZ
Like the other tanks the Leman Russ was painted over using the sponge technique to really add some colour that the previous version lacked, it also helps a great deal when adding battle damage.
After Throne Of Skulls I decided to add some more details to it inspired by the looted tanks from Dawn Of War, so I painted on some chequers and angler patterns plus instead of using english I painted words in Ork Glyphs. The turret reads “Rebel!” while the one at the back says “Mork”.

Now to paint some details on to the vendetta, paint the Battle Bruiser crew and work on some objective markers before the new guard codex comes out. Which leads me to the next topic...

CYGROTZ OR MEGAGROTZ?
Reading what is effectively the new stormtrooper rules in White Dwarf, I fancy taking at least squad of these bad boys in the new transport which I'm going to really enjoy converting.
But that means it's to the drawing board on how to convert suitable Storm trooper proxies that represent the carapace armour and weapons very well.
So here are my ideas...

Cygrotz
The simple of the two ideas; convert Cyborg Gretchin using necron and other bitz, if I take a command squad have it being lead by a grot mekboy.

Megagrotz
An idea that I've had for a while was to put a gretchin in a suit of exo armour with a claw on the left and the hot shot lasgun on the right, using a terminator torso with robotic arms and use squashed balls of green stuff to create old style robot legs. Sadly the grot heads don't fit very well into the terminator torso, but they do fit the grey knight terminator torso very well.

Using images from Bitzbox I've thrown together a little rough image of the idea. The grey Knight torso will be green stuffed and altered, problem is I'm unsure how to model the legs?
The classic robot legs won't work and I don't want to make them looked to armoured by using space marine legs, so far my best idea has been to use shorten cadian legs and add armoured boots at the bottom.

So what are your thoughts on the two ideas, do you'll feel the Grot Exo suits look to armoured to represent stormtroopers? Plus an ideas on how to convert the legs?

.

I like the idea, but feel termie armour may be a tad too much, a standard power armour torso with unarmoured legs is probably a better fit.

Having said that, the termie armour might lend itself better to a small monowheel leg, in a similar vein to your bikers.....although then you're probably making it look even more armoured......hmmm..ponders.....

Yeah, thought you'd already used them somewhere....just seems a better fit for carapace armour compared to the termie....but you do want them to stand out from the regular troops a tad more.....

NEW CODEX NEW IDEAS
Well been looking over the new codex and had a few ideas on possible units.

Wyverns
A pair of tanks are a must and I'll be converting the main armament to mount on my old hydra and griffon mortar to represent them.

New Manticore
The Wyvern's tank hull will be used to convert a new base that can be used for either a Manticore or a Medusa (using forgeworld rules). Originally the Manicore had a radar dish and the idea was it was calling in squadrons of grot bombs but out of all my tanks that was the one opponents could never guess. So I'm going to use an idea from a ork looted guard army and have ton of rockets and missiles mounted on it's back.

Doom-Vee - Chimera Or Taurox
Several people told me this weekend that my Doom-vee transport would make excellent Tauroxes. But I prefer Chimeras at the moment however I can make the heavy bolter on the hull removable and make an alternative twin autocannon turret so I could have the option to use both (just not mixed).

Ratlings
I'll be converting some standard gretchin models and taking a unit of ratlings.

Ork Bot Bullgryns
Just an idea as I might not take a unit but convert some ork bots to represent Ogryns.

Overall Sneaky Gitz Rule
With the points drop for camo cloaks I'm thinking of giving all my grot units (even mounted squads) camo cloaks to represent their sneakiness.

Primaris Psyker
Definitely will be painting up my weirdgrot model in the near future.

Carapace Armour
I brainstormed ideas for carapace armoured grots and this conversion was the result, the boltgun was to be replaced with a hot-shot lasgun converted from a gauss weapon. But I'm unlikely to be fielding scions so I might build a veteran squad with carapace armour.

The Battle Bruiser will finally be completed and uploaded later this week, just needed a break after the mad rush up to Throne Of Skulls.

DA BATTLE BRUISER: WAAAAGH KRUSHA!
I loved the idea of turning a Baneblade into a mobile HQ or flagship for the grot rebels but it wasn't till the Escalation rules came out that I considered it. It was going to be done later on but it became a priority when I needed something to replace 500pts of Ork allies.
But even thou it was completed to a tournament just in time for Throne Of Skulls last month it still needed some work such as the crew, glyphs and other smaller details. But after burning myself out getting the army done I needed a break from the hobby.
Finally the centrepiece for my Grot Rebelz is complete! Too bad it has a tendency to blow up on me in games.

With luck I'll have a full army photograph of the (current) army to post tomorrow

KAPIN SQUIGSCREAM IZ ERE!
Alongside the Battle Bruiser's crew I also painted up Kapin Squigscream to act as either a commissar or an alternative commander to Grotskull. I wanted to make him look fearsome since it's his job to keep all this gretchin warbands in line.
Previously he had a large squig that served as the expendable veteran in the command squad but this time I've added a small squig to his base as well as bulked out his cybork arm.

NEWS FROM DA BIG MEK!
Been working on some tank conversion ideas and concepts and I'm eager to hear your feedback on them...

A Rokkit Trukk
I finally brought a Wyvern today and was looking at the bitz and brainstorming ideas, now originally the plan was to use the mount the turret on one of my grot artillery tanks and use the Wyvern tank as a base for my Manticore. But after seeing the base for the Wyvern turret I had a better idea! See for my Manticore weapon I plan to use the Whirlwind turret but with tons of different missile attached to it (like this looted manticore conversion), but instead of mounting it on a tank I'm going to mount it on the forgeworld enclosed trukk below with some modifications.

What to do with the Dakka Tanks?
For my Hydra tanks in the last codex I converted these small support tanks adding a carriage at the back to keep the armour facing correct, I had planned to use them for my Wyverns but I fear their size could be a problem. See the Hydras never benefited from their small size as they were always in line of sight so they could have a wide range of targets, the wyvern being a barrage tank will often be behind terrain so I fear it's size may become an unfair advantage.

So now I'm wondering what to do with my 3 small tanks because I really don't want to ditch them cause they look awesome, so far my only options are to ditch the trailers and use them as either armoured sentinels or FW immobile weapon platforms?

GROTSKULL'S YARD SALE

SUPA LOBBA!
Just finished up my Wyvern turret, the design was inspired by the large ork turret that you force round on the ork ship in the first level of the Space Marine game. Now all I need to do is get the Enclosed Trukk from Forgeworld to mount it on.

GOBSMASHAS SIGHTED!
I've always wanted to field Gobsmashas in my grot guard army using the FW Laser Tank Destroyer rules, only whilst the body is easily converted from a Leman Russ body the large armoured wheels are the troublesome part as my old rubber wheels won't cut it. Fortunately the chap over at Blood & Skulls Industry has agreed to build some for me, which is fantastic news as his other vehicle components and alternative tracks are top notch. So expect to see Gobsmasha tanks joining the Grot rebel's arsenal in the near future.

DA LOBBA TRUKK!
Well finally got my enclosed cab trukk from forgeworld to convert up for my Wyvern, only problem is due to an error in casting the main 2 parts won't go together without a good amount of work fortunately Forgeworld customer service is top notch and their sending me a replacement part.

So till that arrives I'm going to have to work on the ork trukk plastic components and gretchin crew, speaking of which I was lucky in finding that commander arm as it makes the driver look bored which is only natural since an artillery tank rarely moves lol.
Of course the front will be a lot more armoured when completed, but to better represent the front armour value of 12 I'm also going to be adding a small ram to the front as well.

Here's a photo of it in progress, what do you think?

DA NEW LOBBA TRUKK
Well my replacement part for the FW armoured trukk cab finally arrived so I was able to finally complete my Wyvern conversion. I added an armoured ram on the front to help represent the front armour 12 value, plus I was able to create a little turret from a fuel barrel. I love how the driver looks so fed up waiting around while the gunner has all the fun.

Now is I find myself wanting to build a 2nd one that can also be used for my Manticore with a turret swap, problem is I don't fancy buying two kits again, so I'll wait till I can find the individual Wyvern bits online before I make plans to build another one.

GROT REBEL GAME CARDS
When I was working on the Thousand Sons I created modified magic cards for their available Warlord traits, Psychic Powers and even the Weaponsmith mods. With each card numbered it was easier than needing to look them up in a rulebook as I just rolled the dice and shifted through the cards, it also helped me remember what Warlord trait was in effect and what powers needed casting.

Likewise I'm going to create some Warlord and Psychic cards for the grot rebels, with Taytonclait off Deviantart providing me with some excellent artwork for each warlord and psychic table. Of course the magic card appearance didn't suit the grots so I decided to create my own card design.

What do you think?

ORK BOTZ; 3 MONTHS OF SERVICE!
Well with the new edition out the Warboss and Nob Biker unit are no longer really an option since Orks and Guard are 'come the apocalypse' on the new allies chart, meaning I can't setup the unit within 12” of my guardsmen which will be impossible on all but 1 of the deployment setups.

So the question now is what to do with them? I thought about tweaking them to using them as Ogryns but I don't plan on using a unit of them anytime soon. So it looks like I'll be putting them up for sale. The Warbot will be staying though as I love that model too much to sell it.

So if you interested in buying the Nob Biker conversions drop me a PM, I'll be posting them in the trading threads tomorrow.

THEVIN GIT!
Also one of my Doom-vees have been featured on Spikey Bits' Conversion Corner, I was very pleased to see my work featured... until I noticed that someone else had submitted my work as their own and was mentioned in the description! GROT TANK UPDATE
Someone suggested I repurpose the main part of my old converted Hydra and Griffon Mortar tanks as armoured sentinels, so with that in mind I started looking for suitable turrets and found a perfect match from the Blood and Skulls Industry.

At the moment they stand just a little shorter than a standard sentinel but I can expand the height with some banners on the turret if necessary. As for the main plasma gun armament I was thinking of converting plasma weapons like my old Plasma Russ, but I think the forgeworld pre-heresy plasma guns will fit right in (as photoshopped below).

What do you think?

REBELS GROTS USING DAEMONOLOGY?!?
I love it when people suggest great idea but I hate my local GW manager for this most recent idea for the grots!
Whilst discussing Orks and how they're become very uncooperative to my guard in this edition my local GW manager suggested converting some warp mutated orks summoned by a crazied grot psyker. You know what's better if they were summoned by a grot mek with a shokk attack gun lol.

It's a great idea and I might do it, the question is what sort of daemons should I consider converting my mutated orks to represent? In the interest of not being a total dick to my opponent and going crazy with it I'll only convert 2 squads at the most, either way it will be a while before I get round to this idea as I've got too much on my to do list at the moment.
Your thoughts on the rebel grot shokk attack gun concept?

It be kind of difficult to explain how they suddenly appeared from nowhere and though a psychic power. If I rebase them it will be as Orgyns thou I've decided to wait till the ork codex and rumored blood axe supplement before deciding what to do with them.

When I heard that summoning was a thing in 7th I jumped for joy. Since my big mek's driving inspiration is to bring Gork and Mork into the material plane. It is with that thought in mind that I recommend converting only two models. I don't know the demons that well, but it would have to be something with a lot of attacks, or something that hit like a truck. You know, either Gork or Mork.

Alternatively, if there are any swarm demons, fallen grot rebels that have come back from the dead.

Also, you could say the biker orks could be "teleported" in, if it's a grot SAG bringing demons in.

ps, love the sentinel squig. thanks for the inspiration.

DA LOBBA LORRY IZ ERE!
Well it's taken quite a while but I finally completed my Wyvern conversion, someone suggested the nickname Lobby Lorry which I like the sound of.
Had some difficulties such as the model being too long for any available spaces in my army case so made the front ram removable using some very long pins that go into the trukk's frame. I may make another one in the future but at the moment I still have the Grot Tanks, Flame Tank and Gobsmashas to work on.

Looking at this model I may go back to the chimeras and other vehicles and add some metal plates to make them similar to this vehicle, just not too much as to make them look ramshackle.

WHAT TO DO NEXT?
I'm going to a Combat Patrol Tournament next month and trying to decide what list to take as it will also decide what I'm working on next, the guard list is pretty much the same except for the 4th unit...

X2 Veteran Squads with Autocannons & 3 Grenade Launchers in Chimeras
Wyvern
Devildog or Carapace Armoured Veterans with 3 Plasma Guns

Or I could take [URL="http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/420/353770.page[/URL] and create a new squad, I've also got a hold of some rare Egyptian bits to convert some alternative captains and squad leader models...

10 Man Strike Squad: 2 Psycannons, 1 Hammer, Psybolt Ammo and Justicar with Halberd
110 – 5 Man Strike Squad: 1 Psycannon
135 – Rifledread

What do you think would be the best list? As it means I'll be working on either a Flame Tank, Carapace Gretchin, or 6 new Thousand Sons.

This thread has been criminally underappreciated lately. I really like that tank Proiteus, everything about is really solidly done. The conversion is subtly executed so that it all fits naturally, and is cohesive with the theme of the army.

As for the Combat Patrol, it all depends on whether you want to take a break from the Grots to cleanse your palate, or keep up your momentum with them. Since both armies are predominantly red you're but getting much of a painting break, but the conversion work could freshen things up

A NEW FANCY KILLY SUIT FOR DA BOSS!
Due to the stricter allies table restricting the use of my Warbot and his bodyguard I've be considering an alternative for my bad-ass warboss, and I was pleased to have found it after recently reading a article about Commissar Yarrick. I thought to myself he'd make a great Grot Warboss combining both the leadership of a command squad and the fearsome presence of a Commissar.

The challenge is creating a suitable proxy for Yarrick as he is armed with a storm bolter, laspistol, carapace armour and powerfist so he needs to be a beefy model. My first thought was to convert one of the upcoming plastic meganobz into a short of battlesuit but decided it wouldn't be too tough looking for Yarrick's 4+ Arm/Inv save. So I've settled on the idea of a Grot Commander in an exo suit inspired by their recent appearance in movies and upcoming games.

Seems the best option as I can convert a storm bolter like weapon with a maybe a laser secondary weapon using a tau stealthsuit arm as a base, the power fist/claw should be easy. Only problem will be creating the the legs and upper arms with the metal frame around them as I'd like this to look like a less plated version of ork mega armour. There also the question of who to put in the suit; Kolonel Grotskull the brains & leader of the rebellion or Kaptin Squigscream the hard as nails 2nd in command?

I'd be grateful for any suggestions on this idea and how to convert an exo suit for a grot?

I'd argue either way. Da Kernel already got a dead-killy Warbot. But Squigscream has been leading da ladz quite a bit lately. Could be an interesting opportunity to bring Gazza Stripbolt back into the army, all things considered.

For legs you could try something like the Centurion legs, like have the grot feet on a platform under a larger foot(maybe like the feet you did for your Legio Cybernetica), then use plastic rod to build the frame around it. Shouldn't be too hard.

Yeah I think Squigscream is the best choice for the armour. As for Gazza Stripbolt he'll be used as an engineer whenever I decide to take one, when that time comes I'll likely remodel him to give him more of an ork mek vibe, perhaps I'll use some necron parts to convert Gazlowe from Heroes Of The Storm lol.

Also centurion legs might be a bit too big, remember Yarrick goes on a 25mm base.

MAKIN IT LESS HUMIE LOOKIN!
After painting up my Wvyern conversion I realised that my Chimera conversions could do with a bit more detailing, so I've added some extra plates and bolts as well as a heavy stubber and smoke launcher.

PUNISHER DAKKA CANNONS!
I'm also planning to use Vultures instead of vendettas in my upcoming list and the main and favoured armament choice has to be the twin-linked punisher cannons. I had planned to convert Predator Lascannon sponsons and the punisher cannon barrels to make them, however the barrels are hard to find online. So I decided to try an alternative using the left over gun barrels from the baneblade kit and storm talon engines to make these big chunky guns that will be belt feed from the slit on the valkryie doors.

I'm worried about them being a bit too chunky but then again this is greenskin tek, what do you think?

RIFLE RUNTZ TAKIN DA SHOTZ!!!
Been a while since I did an update, mainly due to the introduction of Warhordes in my local gaming community which I've been swept up in and have been recently painting up a battlegroup.
That said 40k will always be my favourite as for it's conversion possibilities more than anything else.
Anyway finally completed are the Rifle Runtz which shall act as my Ratlings snipers, like all of the grots it was fun to build and paint thou I'm moving towards the Model Color range for skin tones as GW paints tend to be too thick for the job nowdays.

Originally I was just going to have 9 Ratlings but a change to my list now means I need a 10th, problem is there isn't any more gretchin models that would make good snipers that I haven't already converted, so my 10th sniper is gonna have to be something different.
While I paint up my Hordes army I'll take the time to work on some small parts of the grot army such as my Primaris Psyker and repainting the remaining vehicles.

ZOG SQUIG BOMBS, DEZ MUCH BETTER!!!
Been busy with Warmahordes recently but will be getting back into 40k soon with the Vulture Gunship and Rapier Laser Batteries up next. But first I've been thinking of other interesting units to include in the army from time to time to keep things interesting. One such unit is the Cyclops Demolitions Vehicle basically a 30pt remote T6 2 wound demolition charge, thought it might be fun to field 6 of them using Kromlech's Goliath mines below.

ARMOURED SENTINEL UPDATE; RETURN OF THE WARBOTS?
Another matter is the armoured sentinels, I've been trying to think of ways to make the squig tanks (my current sentinels) fully armoured as I've gone off the idea of using the mini tanks as they're likely cause confusion as they're neither walkers or mounted on 60mm bases. So I thought about turning the sentinel cockpit into a mouth with the plasma cannon inside it but with the searchlight eyes I feel it would look... too goofy even for grots.
But then I had an idea, why not use the Warbot or at least convert 3 with killa kan legs and a plasma cannon weapon. It should be easy to mount them on 60mm bases and they'll be more recognizable as Sentinels due to their similar size and being walkers instead of tanks, you can see a side by side comparison of all three models below!

What do you think? It I decide to use them as sentinels I'll need to start looking for all the bitz now and they'll likely be the last thing created for the main army.

I probably didn't make it clear, the scout sentinels (The Squig Tanks) aren't the problem they're great and I'll repaint them at some point. The problem is a grot in an open cockpit doesn't exactly represent front armour 12 very well so I've been trying to come up with a suitable armoured sentinel proxy, the tanks are too confusing but Warbot with legs would fit the bill quite nicely.

Have only just discovered this project log, I love it all. From the painting to the conversion work it is all grade A material. The rifle runtz are awesome, the beady eye and rifle pointing out of the barrel is my personal favourite though.

I hope that Warhordes is a nice break from this army but ultimately serves to provide more inspiration for it. More please.

NEW TEK INCOMIN!!!
Been a while but I'm not back working on 40k and the Grots are going to be getting some awesome new tek soon! First up is my Rapier Laser Battery Conversion, using the last of my guard tracks, and chaos bike parts (from the Ork Botz) plus a few other bits. It's size matches up very well to the size of the original forgeworld Rapier model. The design was inspired by the Soviet tanks from Red Alert 3.

I'm hoping to have the other two built in time for a game this thursday. Only question is should I paint the vent up like a vent or try and pull off a glow effect as if there was a reactor inside, remember these thing have a 50% chance to explode when destroyed?

I've also completed the Thundersquig Gunships's Punisher Cannons for it to be fielded as a Forgeworld Vulture! But just in case I need to use the Vendetta again the Horns and Gatlings Cannons can be swapped out for the Lascannons.

MAN DA GUNZ!!!
Gun crews completed for the Rapier Laser Batteries, been quite good in the few games I've been using the unpainted models in. Going from the top I had to use one of the Mek Gun Gretchin for the crew but made sure to give him a lasgun and a raised base, also wanted to make a grot who was visually cautious about his gun exploding! I also made a Tau Gretchin, I wanted to have the squig on a pole but it didn't work so he became part of the base's detail. Finally there is my grot mek who wearing the Ork Mek mask and swinging the spanner looks very tribal, he accompanied by an enslaved Ork Bot cause I thought they were too good not to have at least one still in the army.

Now to get the Thundersquig gunship Punisher Cannons and details painted!

BETTA DAN A DAKKAJET ANYDAY!!!
I've finally completed work on upgrading the Thundasquig Gunship with it's new Twin Linked Punisher Cannon armaments so it can now represent a Forgeworld Vulture Gunship. Plus a new paint job with a few extra details.
Of course there are tournaments that don't allow Forgeworld units so I've magnetized the horns on the front so I can switch between the Punisher Cannons and Lascannon weapons for when I need to use it as a Vendetta.
It's proven it's worth in nearly every game and it is truly devastating against infantry and even MC.

BLASTA TANK STRIKEZ BAKK!
With the new Rapier Laser Batteries and Vulture gunship, I've decided to once again field my Leman Russ as a the Plasma variant. In the previous edition that tank pretty much destroyed itself with “get's hot” rolls in most games, but now you get a 4+ save to prevent losing the hull point. So time to bring my anti-termie machine back!

DINGZ R GETTIN WEIRDA!
While working on the Rapier Laser Batteries I thought to myself that my current Weirdgrot conversion below (representing a Primaris Psyker) looks great for pyromancy and other physical forms of psychic powers but not for the Divination which I'd be using quite often.

So I needed to get one who'd look right for Divination and could represent an astropath should I ever wish to field one. So I created this floating gretchin in a strait jacket with lots of rods and teslas sticking out. The idea being that when he sees the future he goes nuts and starts screaming about it and sometimes a nearby squad will listen and act accordingly.

Right now I'm working on a display board for Armies On Parade, after that it's the Rapier Laser Battery crew, then the 2 command tanks.

BE SNEAKY AND KARRY A BIG GUN!!
The half painted Rapier teams have been put aside for a while as I have an upcoming tournament at my gaming club coming up, the catch being no forgeworld units. So the rapiers are out and I'm fielding the vendetta. To replace them I've decided to bring 'Agent Spookumz' my old Marbo conversion out of storage and since Marbo seems to have been forgotten about by GW I plan to field him as a Vindicare instead. So I've swapped his arms out and converted him an orky sniper rifle.

BUSY IN DA WORKSHOP
I've also finished work on the first set of expanded spiked tracks today and the Leman Russ Vanquisher tank is starting to take shape, with luck I'll have room for a small grot commander in the Cupola in front of the tank.

So... Why's the commander going to be in the chassis?
The reason most modern tank designs put the commander in the turret is simple: Sight lines.
The commander's cupola on top of the turret offers the best sight lines around the tank. If he's in the chassis forward of the turret, he'll only be able to observe the forward 180* of the tank. Won't see a damn thing behind him.

Just my $0.02

I agree the problem is the cupola on the turret is solid it's good for a hatch but very little else, as opposed to a chassis where I can have him standing up.

Nice little re-work of Spookumz there

Vanquisher is looking good - and obviously the commander uses that cupola so that it's easier to bash the driver round the ear

Its on a flat surface, is cutting the original cupola off with a razor saw or jewlers saw and replacing it not an option?

KOMMAND TANK COMIN THREW!
Behold the grot Kommand Tank that will represent my tank commander's Leman Russ Vanquisher. The spiked tracks really give it an orky feel without the ramshackle look. I decided to go with the Battlewagon turret over the original turret for the command tank because of two reasons; 1 the cupola on top allow me to put a gretchin commander in while the other is solid. & because this turret goes better with the tank.
I still plan to use the larger turrets for when I want to use the tank as a standard Leman Russ Demolisher or Battle Tank or even an artillery tank.

Now I need to get the 2nd one built by next Thursday for the first round of the club tournament as well as my Vindicare Assassin but to do that I need one crucial component...

ANYONE GOT DIZ BIT SPARE!?!
In order to build my 2nd Vanquisher I need the Leman Russ Barrel component shown below, but it's proving hard to find online so if anyone has one to spare please let me know?

GROTZ ON PARADE
Took 2 weeks but I finally got a decent picture of my Grot Rebelz Armies On Parade Board. Of course I couldn't fit the whole army on so instead used a selection of units, including the Rapier Laser Batteries with alternative crew. I was very please with how it turned out, at least as far as the board was concerned.

The contest itself was a bit of a joke as the new manager of my store allowed a group of friends and family members to vote for one entry. It was a good entry but we had few other voters (with the manager making little attempt to get customers to vote) meant he won it by a landslide leaving the other 3 entries tied, so 2nd place was decided by the manager's vote and I won 3rd through a coin toss. Overall it kind of spoilt the experience and next year I likely enter at another GW store.

I'm not dissapointed that I lost after all I did this for a laugh, it just rather than have a fair and balanced contest with 4 equally good entries we had the winner decided through bias votes.

BRINGIN DA EAVY HITTERS!
Since I'm waiting for parts to arrive to complete my 2nd command tank turret and have yet to paint up my psyker with a local tournament starting this week I've changed my list round to instead feature 2 Leman Russ Demolishers, using the unused non-gw turrets which really makes them look intimating.
It's great as I can use the hull of this tank for either a pair of Leman Russ or artillery tanks simply by changing the main armament. Might have to go back and create a Plasma Russ using this same conversion build when I get the time?

All that's left to do is bulk out the back of the legs with greenstuff and some detail to the backpack. Also the head will be replaced with a mean looking one with an officer's cap.

GROT SPEEDAZ?
I plan to build two Tauros buggies for my army soon, essentially they're guard buggies that re-roll dangerous terrain and ignore immobilized results on 4+. Sadly thou it will take quite a lot of work to obtain to parts I need for the actual buggy conversions. So last night I tinkered with a few bits kicking round in my bitz box and game up with this concept...
So what are your thoughts as I'm eager to hear peoples thoughts on the idea of fielding 2 grot speeder as Tauros buggies?

It's not a skimmer but with the re-rolls to terrain test and 4+ ignore it's close, but while it has a cool star wars speeder look I'm worried it might look a bit too quirky even for gretchin. There also the fact it's not an actual skimmer so for counts as purposes it might be a poor choice?

So it's a bit hit and miss at the moment, the conversion will be perfected from it's current rough appearance if I do decide to go with it which is why I'm eager to hear some feedback on it.

BOMBS UR WAY!
If one FW guard unit caught my eye as being something a gretchin would do it was the Cyclops remote demolition vehicle, basically it's 3 independent demo charges with toughness 6, 2 wounds and a 4+ save controlled by a squad of guardsmen at the back of the board. What sealed the deal was Kromlech's orky Goliath mines which I could help but buy on black friday.

Used them yesterday, not by far the most competitive unit in standard games but a fun one to use as they can keep your opponent on their toes.

LOOK OUT! ERE COMEZ DA BOSS!
Well here he is; Commissar Yarrick or in this army Kaptin Squigscream, Boss Grotskull's 2nd in kommand, muscle and right hand grot. I decided to convert an exo suit for the rebel grot warboss as it was the only way he'd be likely wielding a storm bolter and power klaw, plus Yarrick is hard as nails. I was lucky as the flash gitz provided me with the crucial legs, power pack and cyborg eye.

I look forward to painting him in the near future.

TOO HUMIE!
With most of my vehicles taking on a more greenskin appearance such as the Chimeras, Wyvern and the two new Leman Russ tanks I can't help but look at my original Leman Russ and think that it is a bit too humie. Aside from the plasma weapons it looks very standard and could fit in with an Imperial army.

So despite my urges to go onto other projects such as my Tau Commando Strike Force or Tzeentch Daemon Army I feel the need to build a new leman russ, unlike the other two this one will be designed to feature sponsons and will either be a Plasma Russ or a Pask Punisher. Might look to build something similar to the Space Marine Heresy Tank. So expect to see both it and the two new buggies up sometime this month.

Seriously I keep thinking I'm finished with the grots, then I get a new idea and I'm pulled back in again, THE GROTZ JUST WON'T LET ME GO!!!

Tick...tick... BOOM!!!
Well aside from that the grot remote bombs are completed thou they won't see much use in competitive games (unless it's 500-750pts) they are still a fun unit to use in friendly games. I've made sure to be able to match the bomb controller to their cart with 1 remote control matching the pattern on the cart and the 2nd having a large black helmet to match the bomb. The 3rd has got a Playstation controller because reasons.

DA ARDEST GROT DERE EVA WAS!
Finally finished off Squigscream on Saturday, converted from a variety of bits (most from the flash gitz) I wanted to make a fearsome looking gretchin warboss to represent Commissar Yarrick. And that's just what I got, course the problem now is finding a place for him in the army.

I had to replace his original banner because the bone didn't come out the way I wanted but I think the fist works better, was worried about the black armour but the chipping damage highlights it well.

RUFF RIDERZ; SQUIGSUITZ OR WARTRIKEZ?
Made the mistake this week of starting to brainstorm ideas for Rough riders, so far I've had two ideas.

Squigsuits
Inspired by the exo suit rough riders created by Flinty I made what is essentially a Grot Squigsuit using a Tau Broadside power pack, crisis feet and bionic bits. The idea was to put a robotic arm on the back with the piston powered spear and have them modelled bouncing and running. Only problem is it doesn't take up much space on the bike base and the legs are a little wide, so they'd need to be mounted on 40mm bases which brings up the question; what is the official base for Rough Riders?

Trikes
Unsure about the squigsuit idea I went to my local GW where 3 young players were building Orks, I spotted a Deffgun from a Loota kit and saw a Grot Trike, I've ordered some pistons and small wheels to experiment with this idea more later this week.

So I'm eager to hear which idea people think is better?

I like both, but...

The Squigsuits are hilarious, although I think the base difference could potentially pose a problem.

Have you thought about for the trikes idea, do it "Big Wheel" style with the front wheel being considerably larger? It could potentially even count as the lance itself.

For the trikes I also believe you could use the Rectangle - Calvary bases with no problem, if I am not mistaken, because they'd be more proportional to the little trikes while also reducing their packing-size.

How so? At first I thought it wasn't on the correct sized base but then someone pointed out that at the moment this is the closest thing to an official rough rider model. & it's on a 40mm base?

Oh, then I'm mistaken. I had the original riders' image in my head and forgot about DKoK. I only brought it up because I know that the Nob Biker's base mattered so that it wasn't "confusing".

Defintely a fan of the squigsuits - don't play so can't give any advice on the base size, but if the DKOK riders are on 40mm then it all looks good to me. A squad of those leaping all over the place will look fantastic

I like the squid suits, but I think you'd have more luck in competitions with the bikes, after what happened to those awesome mono-wheel cybork. I think the squid suits are more fun by a long shot tho.

Also, what are those wheels from? they are so small

Awesome conversions but you know that.

The grot on the bike is more recognisable as a rough rider but the squig suit is so much cooler I would go with that.

I don't game but if I recall the rules are a bit vague now with regards to base size and I don't think it really matters. If they get a bit lost on a 40mm have you tried the new 32mm round?

FOR DA GREATER GROT!
Being thinking of ways to represent the laspistols on my Squigsuit rough riders. Since adding a 2nd arm made them look too humanoid and attaching a gun to the spear made it too bulky; so I instead decided to make a wee little gretchin drone to escort them.
They'll be two for every five rough riders and will be mounted on the bases with them.

Well finished working on my new Plasma Russ for my grot guard, decided to replace the old model which had a red paint job but little else which compared to the other newer tank conversions looked a bit too humie. So I decided to build a new version to match the more greenskin like appearance of the rebellion to match the brutal appearance of the command tank!

Gotta say I'm loving the flexible rivet strips from Zinge Industries, they're a god send. Plus the spiked tracks from Blood & Skulls Industry add to the brutal look!

Started work on painting all 3 tanks today, got them based and inked so tomorrow it will be time to break out the sponges. Still can't wait to unleash all 3 fully painting on to the board.

Very nice! The use of the BW dozer is excellent, makes a fantastic hull. Storing that idea away Nice use of the jet bits for rounding out the bottom of the hull too.

Zinge's flexible strips are highly recommended - rivets, pipes, chainsaw blades etc. - all great products. And those tesla coils are great for greenskin dakka parts too

I was painting them today in my local indie store when someone mention when compared to my other tanks the turret is... a bit small. So we started putting every turret on the tank till we found a match with the predator one, I think with a few added bolts and with the main weapon it might look a lot better. What do you think?

I think that's an excellent match Proiteus.

Size wise I can see your reasoning however I honestly think the previous turret seemed more Orky and original

I kind of preferred the squat turret, it makes for an interesting counterbalance to the outer tanks and makes it very visually distinct.

The size disparity isn't so much a bug as a feature, if you follow me

Found a perfect turret which goes perfectly with the tank, my old Plasma Russ turret lol. Just need to spruce it up with a few bitz to it to make it look less like a guard turret.

BLASTA TANK POWERED UP!!!
Completed the new an improved Blasta Tank MK2 with spiked tracks, ork glyphs and a brutal lookin front armour plating overall making it a huge improvement over the previous version. The sponsons and main armament are removal so if I ever want to field a Pask Punisher in the future I can do that.
I stuck with the original turret after realizing it was a much better fit after other players said the new one was too small for such a tank.

Anyway I'm loving the new version.

Same here Proiteus. The silhouette is very distinct, and I'll be damned if I can tell how you put that together.

Only thing that bugs me is I can't help but feel like the turret is an ever so slightly different shade of red to the tank. Might just be my tablet though. Regardless, it's a brilliant conversion with a great paint job tying it together

Must be because it's from the old tank, I brightened up to match the rest of the tank but I guess the faint difference is noticeable in strong light.

CALLING DOWN DA GROT BOMBS!
I'm thinking of bringing back an old favourite. In the previous version the one tank people had trouble identifying was the Manticore, instead of the 4 missiles it had a dish and was crewed by grot mekboys with the idea being it was calling in Grot Bomb Suicide Squads with the D3 barrage representing how many of the piloted bombs made it to the target. But instead of the large tank from the codex I plan to use the Manticore Gun Emplacement rules from FW, basically 100pts for a AV10 immobile vehicle with 2 HPs and without the heavy bolter. I give you the Grot Rebel Spotta! (Basically a scout/spotter for the grot bomb strikes).

I've used the hull from the old Hydra tank conversions since they're ill suited to represent armoured sentinels, only problem is the emplacement can't move so I need to add some detail or adjustment to the tracks to represent that? So far the best idea is putting wedge blocks at each end of the tank, suggestions?
