With my Sisters of Battle army finished off I have started on painting my collected Daemons. As some of you might recognise I was collecting daemons while painting Sisters (heresy).

I'd loved the daemons back in 2nd edition when I started but I never got around to collecting and painting. As a random project I picked up a metal Bloodthirster about a year ago to assemble/paint (many pins) and it got the ball rolling. Before I knew it I had many kilograms of metal daemons in boxes. Now they get painted.

My goal was simple: an all-metal daemon army with mostly old models. It will include every god and almost every model/unit. I'm probably going to substitute a hellcannon for a skullcannon. I still have to think for a proper oldskool metal substitute for a Soul Grinder though... I'm expecting it to take at least a year to paint everything I already have.

First I'm starting with the Khorne contingent:

To start off, the Bloodthirster:

I painted this a year ago and wanted to continue the color scheme for the rest. For my squad of Bloodletters I tried 2 things, a dark and a light base colour. Khorne Red and Blood Red respectively. Test pieces as it were.

Bloodletter with dark base:

After a red wash I dry-brushed it to create highlights.

Bloodletter with light base:

I gave it multiple red washes to darken the light red.

They aren't finished yet (corrections, especially the eyes) but I'm curious... the light red gives a more old 'Eavy Metal feel, but the dark one feels more Grimdark.

Comments are welcome. I'll be updating this thread as I work my way through nearly 250 metal models.

Some more progress:

I have decided to split the 20 'letters I have into 2x10, but keep the paint scheme almost the same (so I can use it as 2 squads or 1 big squad). A 2nd squad of (2x10) bloodletters will be the slightly less old metal models that were released after these.

Grand (little) Army of Chaos Undivided @ 2013/03/24 09:20:18

Post by: Shandara

Nearly done:

The next 10 will be slightly darker in colour, so that I can split them if needed. After that I still have a command group to paint.

After that, more awaits:

Next 10 bloodletters in progress:

This time I started with Khorne Red and Washed it twice to darken/redden it. Tomorrow I'll start drybrushing to lighten it up again.

I've also started work on some Flesh Hounds (17 to be exact). Once I finish green-stuffing them I'll take a picture. Naturally they are the older metal ones. I've also got Karanak lined up, which will be a nice contrast: he's so much bigger than the old flesh hounds.

My Flesh Hounds being green-stuffed:

Post by: Shandara

Some further work on my 2nd 10 bloodletters:

Also been trying out a paint scheme for my Flesh Hounds:

I'm trying to stick with the scheme I used for the 'letters, but with a different spot color (the hair). Also, the flesh hounds were a pain to green-stuff, because almost nothing fit. So many gaps..

I was also (un)pleasantly surprised when I opened an old Karanak (metal) blister I had picked up in a store ages ago and found it was missing one of the heads. I'll have to find a new one now.

Bob and his trusty hound:

Still undecided if I want to change the spikes on the back of the hound to bone color.

I've also started on the command squad:

(Uncle Khorne wants YOU!)

Hopefully I should finish the entire squad this weekend.

I love the use of the old-school models.

Grand (little) Army of Chaos Undivided @ 2013/03/30 08:30:08

Post by: Shandara

@sturmtruppe:
Thanks, my army will (when it's finished) only consist of old(er)-style models, except for units that had no models back then. No plastic allowed (except bases)!

My 2nd 10 bloodletters are basically finished:

The original dark-toned one is on the far right. It is very slightly less dark than the other 9, but oh well.

I also found time to work on the Champion/Herald:

Making pictures really shows so many imperfections in the painting process. That or maybe I need glasses...

The last 2 are under way as well:

I'm still thinking whether I will start on another god's troops next or continue with Khorne. I have 2 khorne chariots lined up (with Heralds on them) which look fun to do next. Basically they are the old metal Chaos Chariot with 2 old-style Juggernauts (not the REALLY old Realm of Chaos ones, but the ones that came with the WH40k Khorne Lord with plasma pistol, which was available from GW until recently).

Due to the easter holidays I didn't have much time to work on the army, but I did manage to get some painting in:

Kinda depressing I still have 12 more (and a 2nd squad as well) after this, but at least they are easy to paint.

I've also been thinking about my chariots. Because I use 2 big Juggernauts to pull them the standard chariot base is woefully too small. If I use http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat470008a&prodId=prod1750002a instead would that be acceptable? I see that the new plastic kits come with a monster base (100x50mm) but mine were planned before they came out.

Alternatively I could have it pulled by just 1 juggernaut, but that would be weak!

Haven't painted much the past few days but did receive some things in the mail:

I think I have all the different poses (and the command squad in the back). Because they are newer models (2006 I think?) they contrast well with my first squad. No confusion on the battlefield!

My 2nd squad of bloodletters is now complete, stripped and cleaned thoroughly.

Working on the next 6 flesh hounds:

Grand (little) Army of Chaos Undivided @ 2013/04/06 20:52:55

Post by: Shandara

Finished those 6 hounds, working on the last 6 now.

I used my current force for a bit in an unusual battle, where my Eldar faced my brother's Blood Angels in a fight over a demonic portal (aka the Relic) (Roll a D6: 1-5 = spawn 4d6 bloodletters, 6 = bloodthirster) to spice it up a bit. Naturally, it was a big massacre, especially when my brother rolled a 6 two turns in a row.

My Khorne army so far:

Grand (little) Army of Chaos Undivided @ 2013/04/09 13:59:01

Post by: Shandara

Last 6 hounds nearly finished, probably done tonight.

Also cleaned and primed the bloodletters, plush some liquid green stuff for the gaps on the champion/banner bearer.

Once I finish that squad I'll start on some heralds so I can play some games (using a bloodthirster in low points games is probably a bit too mean).

Started work on a test for the 2nd squad:

Still needs some touching up. I think it matches up with the previous squad well enough. I'm not a fast painter so I think this was about 3 hours work. Will take 3-4 weeks to finish the squad I think.

It took a lot of time to gather all those OOP models together. Cheaply that is, even with Ebay/local sources.

Strangely enough I found those flesh hounds in a shop quite near, where they'd probably been on the shelf for many years (I think those sculpts are from 2004 or so?)

Grand (little) Army of Chaos Undivided @ 2013/04/11 13:11:32

Post by: Shandara

Didn't feel like painting much today so spent some time gathering all the bits for my chariots (now called Blood Thrones).

Ingredients:

2 Chaos Chariots:

4 old-style Juggernauts (not the really old Realm of Chaos ones, since I like these better):

2 Champions, the same as my troop squads:

Everything:

I'm going to pin nearly everything (and especially the feet of the juggernauts to the base so it will hold through the gaming. The 2 juggernauts should just about fit on the big monster base, the chariot's scything blades should be clear too. I have some command group models as well left over which I may add to the base as a sort of escort later on. The larger base will make using a transport tray easier too since it shouldn't be hard to make a snug fit in my Battlefoam trays.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Found some spare time to do some pinning:

The Herald is pinning with his feet to the chariot. Since he had a raised leg already it fit very well!

Base-coated 10 bloodletters and washed them (forgot to take a pic though).

Did play a few battles this weekend (3 to be precies, 2 at 1062 points and 1 at 1212), just testing out my painted models.

Not really fair at these low point values, but hey.. 2 greater demons help a lot when you don't have ANY shooting units whatsoever.

List:
Bloodthirster (Exalted Reward, Greater Reward)
Great Unclean One (ML3, 2 Greater Rewards) (Rolled an amazing Iron Arm, Endurance, Warp Speed combo).

2x 13 bloodletters with Standard, Icon and Sergeant

10 and 7 flesh hounds

vs

My brother's IG army:
Manticore
Demolisher
Platoon with autocannons and flamer command squad
veteran squad with meltaguns
Primaris Psyker
3 Armoured Sentinels
Vendetta
3 Sabre Defense Platforms

Needless to say my Bloodthirster was a prime target with all those autocannons/multi-lasers.

Nurgle and Khorne, best buddies forever!

Post by: Shandara

Some more work on my 'letters:

Also picked up a not-Khorne model:

Since it's hunched over it's about as big as a normal bloodletter. It's far more bulky though. It'll make a good Herald of Khorne.

Grand (little) Army of Chaos Undivided @ 2013/04/17 15:22:47

Post by: Shandara

More work done on the 'letters and the herald (nearly finished):

I think it fits well enough with the rest.

I also picked up a Lord of Pestilence, aka not-Nurgle Herald:

Unlike the not-Khorne one, this needed copious amounts of greenstuff to hide all the cracks. Also lots of filing because of huge mouldlines. It's about as tall as anormal plaguebearer, but far more bulky.

Grand (little) Army of Chaos Undivided @ 2013/04/21 08:11:40

Post by: Shandara

The first 10 bloodletters of the 2nd squad are nearly done:

Just need some work on the axes' engraving and some corrections. I found a pretty huge mouldine on one the axes, which was a major downer. I'll have to see if I can get it off without ruining the rest of the paintjob.

Also found time to do Karanak while waiting for paint to dry on those 10:

I used a spare head from another flesh hound as his third head, since that was missing from the blister. (The right-most head is the non-Karanak one).

Just as something different I started on Skulltaker:

So far I've painted:
20 bloodlettters + command squad
10 bloodletters + command squad
1 herald of khorne
17 flesh hounds
1 Karanak

Not bad for 1 month of work! I managed to track down 3 more flesh hounds of the same model on Ebay so soon I'll have the full squad of 20.

Post by: Shandara

Did most of the work on Skulltaker:

I'm not really happy with him. Especially the cloak's inside was hard to do in my colour scheme. I'm not sure it works well with this model. Also the model has a lot of rough places (mostly inside the cloak/armpits) which I found hard to make any sense of. I may re-paint him. I also suck at painting fire.. sigh.

My brother also finished a skull.. err victim:

Post by: Shandara

Worked some more on the 'letters:

Also received my last 3 Flesh Hounds, stripped, cleaned and green-stuffed. Now waiting for it to harden a bit so I can sand:

Those dogs always have huge gaps (especially the head seems to be warped a lot, filing it down helped, but it still needs a lot of greenstuff.

Thanks! With all the good painting on Dakka I sometimes get a bit disappointed in my own results. I do know I have gotten better since I started again 1.5 years ago, but the process is slow :0

---

I had little to do but paint this weekend so I've been busy with the Flesh Hounds. I tried snapping pictures at each stage:

Primed:

Base-coat with Khorne Red:

Washed with red wash:

Drybrush with red:

Drybrush with orange:

Hair/teeth with Deneb Stone:

Wash with nuln oil:

Drybrush with white:

Cleanup with khorne red/normal red:

Collar black:

Collar gold and base with castellan green:

Based:

Grass tufts and varnish:

Simple and fast. Since I had to paint 20 of these doggies I had to I mostly paint to play, so I usually don't spend many hours on each basic infantry model.

While I was waiting for some green stuff to harden on my Blood Throne conversions, I went to work on this guy:

and turned him into:

I want to try and bring out the flaky nature of his skin more but even a lot of drybrushing didn't work on that. I'll have to high-light the edges manually it seems. The model is quite chunky and not all the details are crisp (the skulls on the flail).

Some more high-lighting:

Was distracted further by some other minis on my workbench:

Simple mini, but very nice.

Still working on the Masque, but man what a fiddly model. Wire-thin pieces, very small details. It makes me afraid to even pick it up for fear of bending it.

With these 2 nearly done I only have Epidemius lying somewhere in a box. I don't think there's a metal Blue Scribes model so I'll have to bash something together myself.

Grand (little) Army of Chaos Undivided @ 2013/05/02 13:45:34

Post by: Shandara

Nearly finished the Masque:

Started work on the first Blood Throne of Khorne (or rather Chariot of Khorne):

Grand (little) Army of Chaos Undivided @ 2013/05/03 13:12:24

Post by: Shandara

Some work on the chariot itself:

Was a bit miffed that despite the fact that I green-stuffed the gaps and smoothed them they still show up here and there. Oh well.

Base-coats on the Juggers:

Coated, washed, brushed again.

Grand (little) Army of Chaos Undivided @ 2013/05/04 10:05:51

Post by: Shandara

Some work on the Juggernaut:

Mostly needs cleanup + details now.

The other one is still red. I was just trying out my color scheme I used for the bloodletters etc on this one. Kinda hard to paint all the details since I glued the legs already. But since they had to be green-stuffed for the gaps I didn't have much choice.

Post by: Chelnov

Nice to see the "old" metal chariot again. I used to have 2 of those in my chaos army. The paintjob on the juggernaut looks ok to me.

I probably should not say this...but it's a bit sad that you get so little replies.

Take care.

Thanks!

Don't worry about the lack of the response though, I'm mostly using this thread to keep myself painting at a steady rate. And to keep track of how much time it cost. I think I have about 3000 points of each god to paint so I'll be here for a while.

Finished the Chariot, just need to paint the herald on it (and the on-foot version) and make a base:

Grand (little) Army of Chaos Undivided @ 2013/05/07 09:31:12

Post by: Shandara

I'm planning to add some stuff to the base of the chariot:

The banner bearer/musician will be magnetised so I can use them in my squad as well (if needed or if I expand it further). I'll full up the area around them with green-stuff/filler to level it out. Even with the biggest base GW has (the 150x100mm large monster one) it barely fits. It's a lot bigger than normal chariots/monster one (100x50mm) but it would be fiddly to have the juggernauts half off the base.

I also started on the Herald on foot:

I've been finishing my purchases for the other gods, picked up another few old metal Seekers of Slaanesh to get enough mounts for both my 20-woman seeker squad and my chariot. One thing I've not had much success with is finding suitable heralds. Since they have to be metal and I don't want duplicates I've been scrounging in non-GW miniature lines. I already have the Avatars of War not-Khorne and not-Nurgle ones, but does anyone have any suggestions for Slaanesh/Tzeentch?

For Khorne I have:
* Skulltaker (can double as normal herald)
* Avatars of War not-Khorne herald
* 4 bloodletter champions on foot in a pinch (although they are too puny to be real heralds)
* 2 heralds of Khorne on Juggernauts

For Nurgle I have:
* Epidemius (can double as normal herald on palanquin)
* Avatars of War not-Nurgle herald
* 2 plaguebearer champions on foot

Tzeentch:
* Changeling (can double as normal herald)
* Tzeentch Sorceror on foot (http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440108a&prodId=prod1050018) might put him on a chariot with 2 screamers pulling.
* Tzeentch lord on disc (http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440108a&prodId=prod1710164a), going to put a newer type metal flamer on his disc, since he's too humanoid.
* 2 Pink Horror Champions on foot

Slaanesh:
* Masque (can double as normal herald)
* Dechala the Denied One (http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440108a&prodId=prod2020002)
* 2 Daemonette Champions on foot

Especially the unit champions are just too tiny. A Herald should be big, on a 40mm base and be a focal point of the unit/army.

Grand (little) Army of Chaos Undivided @ 2013/05/09 14:31:32

Post by: Shandara

And it's done:

The 2 bloodletters at the back (Musician and Banner Bearer) are magnetised so I can take them off for use in a squad (or as Hull Point counters?)

I picked up an old box of Flesh Hounds at the local shop today (14 of the 2006 ones now, 6 to go) and this dude:

It's an Avatars of War Sorceror of Pestilence. I'll use it as a Herald of Nurgle. I spent some time with base coats, washes to make it murky.

The 2nd Blood Throne has been base-coated Khorne Red rather than brown. I want to paint it rather contrasting to the first one, but still fitting with my color scheme.

Grand (little) Army of Chaos Undivided @ 2013/05/10 09:12:26

Post by: Shandara

Some more work on the not-Nurgle herald:

Originally it came with a bunch of tentacles you're supposed to fit in the big holes on the hunch, but I didn't like them much.

Also working on the 2nd chariot:

Automatically Appended Next Post:
While painting the chariot and waiting for things like washes to dry I dug up my 2 Demon Princes:

Legs and torsa are stll unglued because I need to green-stuff/ping them.

For the wings I use sets of Bloodthirster wings that I've scrounged up via Ebay, they need pretty big and heavy pinning:

That's 1.5mm brass rod.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Some more drilling:

Big pings:

The gap is going to be filled/smoothed with green stuff.

Amazingly, it's pretty balanced and won't tip over by itself. The picture above only has the legs glued together (and pinned) and the torso glued (2 parts tarso + 2 arms). The wings are still loose and the torso isn't glued to the legs either. Big gaps anyway, so lots of green-stuff needed.

The 2nd chariot is done!

The bases embedded at the back can be removed (magnetised) and the banner-bearer & musician I still have to find on Ebay can eventually find their place there.

Both side-to-side for comparison:

Next up: a tale of 2 metal demon princes and their wings...

Grand (little) Army of Chaos Undivided @ 2013/05/17 09:21:26

Post by: Shandara

First one takes:

Some green-stuffed, sanding and priming later:

I'm fairly confident that with the 2 thick pins in each wing they'll stand up to the rigors of battle. My bloodthirster had 2 small pins and I pick it up with the wings regularly without problem (but of course he was designed for the wings).

And done:

This one was a base-coat of Blood Red, then washed with Carrobourgh Crimson and dry-brushed with Red Sunz. Scarlet

Working on the 2nd daemon prince now, which will have a darker base colour (much like my Bloodletters are split into two base colours). After a wash I'll dry-brush it to lighten it.

Grand (little) Army of Chaos Undivided @ 2013/05/19 07:57:23

Post by: Shandara

The 2nd prince is done as well:

Sadly enough the bits I had gathered to convert it a bit didn't really fit (I had an extra bloodthirster axe/whip) so I went with the standard model.

Brothers next to each other:

Down to my last big Khorne character, the 2nd bloodthirster:

The extra axe I had over from buying all the wings for the princes came in handy! Sort of a flying Skarbrand feel to it. I though about magnetising the wings but they are just too heavy in metal.

After this I only have 2 more units to paint for Khorne, a unit of Bloodcrushers + 2 heralds and a Skullcannon! Edition Khorne is nearing its end. (I am not counting Chaos Furies but I'll probably paint those in a khorney colour scheme as well).

Some green-stuff later:

When it hardens out a bit I can sculpt it a bit into a semblance of muscles (not my strong point unfortunately).

Thanks! I'm kinda sad I'm running out of Khorne models soon, but also excited to swap over to the next Chaos God.

Still, I saved the best for last, I really like the Bloodcrusher models and having a squad of 9 with 2 heralds will surely be hard-hitting (although chaos is fickle with my Grimoire rolls..)

Post by: Shandara

The skullcannon was quite horrible. Since it's metal and quite warped it took a lot of filing, bending and green-stuff:

Especially the mouth and rear entrance:

Just noticed it's been another month since I started. This month's panting result was:
10 bloodletters
3 flesh hounds
The Changeling
The Masque of Slaanesh
2 heralds of Khorne on Blood Thrones + crew
Skulltaker
2 Daemon Princes
1 Bloodthirster
2 Heralds of Nurgle

Primed and ready for paint:

Dry-fitting just to see how it works out. Need to fashion some sort of chain still for the Jugger to pull the cannon. The crew will be magnetised so I can remove them for use in the squads/transport.

Some work done on the cannon:

Dry-fitted it again to check the colour and it rubbed off some at the connecting holes. I'm going to paint the cannon, 2 mounting pieces and the fiddly piece that goes in between first and seal it. Then when I try the wheels I won't have to repair everything each time.

Just need to finish the chains that hold up the big skull on the cannon's mouth and I'm done. Well with the cannon. Juggernaut and crew are next!

A tale of weak ankles and heavy metal:

The 11 metal bloodcrushers I have (9 + 2 heralds) all have the same problem. They are heavy. HEAVY! And the ankles are thin. It's supposed to stand on that one foot. So naturally I noticed the connection is weak and the metal brittle. Most snapped off with barely any force needed.

The foot is supposed to go here:

I resorted to some heavy pinning. About 1 cm into the leg and all the way through the foot:

(note: the last picture has the foot not all the way through yet)

Lastly, I glued it to a base and pinned the foot from the bottom as well:

The front leg was pinned to the base as well (not through but will have a blob of green-stuff keeping it in place):

The head gets a pin too:

And with the herald:

Head and herald not glued yet since I need to paint it first. Only need various bits and pieces to khorne it up now.

Cheers,

They aren't too bad compared to some of the metal models I've assembled now, but they are up there with Penitent Engines or so.

Finished both heralds:

In a slight detour from the Khorne business, some goodies from Forgeworld arrived today. In anticipation of the Eldar codex I'd splurged a little bit on stuff I'd wanted for a while:

Now I have the set of 3 complete (Rogue Trader, 2nd Edition and FW)!

I may use these for normal games as the new Crimson Hunter. I was surprised how small they are and that the body is cast in one piece! Especially the Interceptor.

My Sisters also got some reinforcements:

I'm going to convert this into a second Avenger Strike Fighter.

After a lot of work on the bloodcrushers I managed to assemble, clean and green-stuff them:

The heads and riders aren't glued since it'll be easier to paint that way. I hid all the pins with green-stuff as well. All of them have 3 pins (both hind legs and left front leg) into the base for stability. The heads are pinned as well. You may notice some plastic (heresy) but I couldn't manage to make a musician that looked good so I used the torso/arm of the plastic musician. I crafted a spear for one of the crushers which will serve as an icon (probably going to attach a small banner to it).

With that, I just have to wait for it all to harden properly and then clean the greenstuff a bit. Then it's off to the priming station!

My word who needs a gym when your figure cases contain this much metal!

I've yet to really start on the khorne section of my army so lots of inspiring stuff, I feel your pain with using the hellcannon, mine was also a warpy mess of metal, fortunately mine went on a nurgle model

I'm well trained at lugging big cases of metal with my Sisters of Battle army!

First Herald is mostly finished:

The 2nd herald's juggernaut is on its way:

Darker base colour like every 2nd unit in my army (I have 2 of most things, one light coloured, one dark)

The grunts in the Bloodcrusher unit won't have gold lining, but silver to distinguish them easily. (a bit like the 1st chariot's juggernauts).

As a break (and because it's such a great model), I started on the Avatar of Khaine - forgeworld style.

I bought a lot of 20+ off Ebay cheaply. But it took some months of watching auctions, they don't show up much.

Did some work on the Nightwing Interceptor (since my codex and goodies are arriving this tuesday):

Had to be creative because of the sliding mechanism. Forgeworld was kind enough to ship a modern Flying Stand with it (although their website doesn't say this, so I ordered two separately...). But there's no hole for it on the bottom. It did come with a small piece of resin in the shape of the flying stand..

But the sliding mechanism is on the bottom! So I made a stand-off so I can still access it. There are 2 small, flat, but strong magnets inside the adapter so I can remove the flying stand. I'm not sure whether I'm going to glue the adapter to the flyer, but if it works well enough I might.

Back to the demons. I'm working on 4 Bloodcrushers now. One will double as the champion and a herald:

Because I bought it off Ebay without the sword attached I converted a spear from a bit of brass and a spare sword from a real herald I had left over (after making one with an axe). The legs were _very_ bent on this one and even with copious pinning it wasn't that stable. So I made I had to support the front legs. I will disguise it with some foliage on the base later on.

The unit is quite big:

(getting dark..)

Let's hope it doesn't suffer the New Model Syndrome in my first tournament!

Next up:

which turns into:

One of the few units I've bought complete from GW itself (since it was one of the few metal ones left). I'm also snapping up older harpies from Ebay to make a 2nd unit.

Another month goes by and the tally is:
1 Skullcannon
8 bloodcrushers
3 Heralds on Juggernauts

Definitely slower! I blame the release of the Eldar codex.. GW can't do anything right!

Left to paint:
20 Furies of Khorne
another 20 Flesh Hounds

Edition Nurgle is coming closer! I also managed to snag some Gorkamorka Mutie Raiders. I'm going to use their steeds with some old metal plaguebearers as Nurgle Cavalry, aka Plague Drones. I don't like the idea of big flies but I do want me some cavalry!

Still need to fill all the gaps and pin all the heads.

For an upcoming tournament I worked on a way to keep track of daemonic rewards and psychic powers:

Very cheap $1 magnetic white board and a whole lot of magnetic fridge words (also cheap). With a label printer and some time cutting/pasting them I will make a magnetic counter for each reward and psychic power. (Please ignore the typo on the paper, it's v1!)

Done with the last bloodletters:

Just a little touch-up (these closeups always reveal too many imperfections...) and I have 4 squads of bloodletters finished (well 2 big ones that can split into 4).

=====================

With my vacation starting next saturday I decided to start Nurgle after that. In the meantime I had some stuff lying about. On the previous page I posted pictures of the Forgeworld stuff I'd bought (3 flyers). One has been painted already but the other 2 will receive attention this week.

Starting with the Voss Pattern Lightning, which I will use as an Avenger Strike Fighter:

To assist with its dual role I used a lot of magnets. First the air intake:

With the handily provided recessed area it was very easy to magnetise both the turbine fan and the bolt cannon:

The bolt cannon is made from a kit by Machinator (also on these forums I think) and he makes a very nice Fellblade conversion kit. Luckily he also sells the bits separately. The Vulcan Mega Bolter stand-ins he sells fit perfectly side by side:

Pinned together and with magnets they fit snugly.

The Lightning has 6 missiles but the Avenger only has 2 weapon mounts (apart from the Lascannons):

With this I can swap out all the missiles for autocannons, missile pods, etc..

(Missile pre-flattening of the metal bit)

(Autocannon with magnet)

Last but not least, FW provides a clear cupola again:

It came with a huge gate attached and the material is brittle so care is needed separating them. Only a little bubble on one of the edges, for the rest it was very clear.

Overall I was pleased with the quality of casting. Almost everything fit snugly. Only a small gap between the wings/hulls need to be filled:

Well, it's all done now.

It can server 2 roles, first as an Avenger Strike Fighter:

And swapping the weapons/intake back to original, as a Voss Pattern Lightning:

Next up:

I was surprised how few parts these older forgeworld models have compared to the new ones. Apart from the pilots, you only have the engine exhaust, 4 small tail fins and the pulse laser. Unfortunately, this one didn't come with a flying stand adapter (really FW, you drop the ball there, you don't even mention on the website you get a new flying stand with the older flyers). So I had to make something myself.

I made a small flat box out of plasticard, filled it with green-stuff and stuck the flying stand end in it (liberally lubed with water) to make an impression. I then used 4 pins to attach the bit to the flyer, but leaving enough space so the pulse-laser can fit in between. Basically the same as my Nightwing earlier in this thread, but with more DIY!

Thanks,

I finished the Phoenix (a week of no work before I go on vacation has spurred me on to new heights of efficiency!)

Despite being an older FW model it still has a lot of details to paint. The downside is that the hull was one big piece of resin and it took a lot of soaking in hot water and careful bending to get the wings in shape. Making them 100% symmetrical was beyond me however. I also wish they'd made the pilot seats bigger. It's very cramped and especially the covers don't fit very well. It took a lot of shaving/fitting to get it right (and I did take off too much at a few corners..) The clear plastic canopies are horrible too. The resin gap where they were supposed to broke off during washing so I had to improvise...

In the last picture you can see the solution I had for the fact that these old models aren't built for the flying stand.

Since I still have today and tomorrow, I figured I'd get started on my plaguebearers after all.
I painted one as a test:

Was quite simple. Gretchin Green base, then washed with Anthonian Camoshade. High-lighted with Scorpion Green. Bone sections Rakarth Flesh, then Ushabti and high-lighted white. But I'm not sol, it looks a bit flat.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I brightened him up a little and started on the other 9 plaguebearers:

I love these models. While the wash dries I carefully clean the places it pools too much. I want a fairly noticeable shadow but now unsightly blotches of wash.

I think these guys came in like 15 or 20 different sculpts. I'm going to see if I have enough different ones to make a unit of 20 unique ones.

Hmm, that's an idea. I'll have to think up some way to make it realistic though.

Sadly I only found 15 different sculpts, so my units will have some duplication in them.

I'm planning 2 units of 20 each, with a separate command squad for each too. One unit + command in the above scheme.

The other will be in a contrasting, more sickly grey-ish theme.

These are the very old Plaguebearers, I think from round 1991?

I think I paid maybe 60 pounds total for 50 of em (including 2 command squads). It did take a long time of ebay watching, especially for the command squads.

Did you try superglue or water effects for the ooze?? You could also varnish the intestines and such. that would make them stand out.

Great work by the way. never thought to use white for a base for nurgle deamons.

I've also started on Epidemius. Being metal and so many small parts makes me cry a little inside.

Epidemius - so many gaps to fill:

Now waiting for it to harden a bit, so I can smooth everything.

Also received some wings in the mail, not trying out one of my planned conversions. I didn't like the plastic Plague Drone model (and it's plastic!!) so I decided on something different:

Plague Cavalry!

The parts list:
* Gorkamorka Mutie raider mount
* Plaguebearer
* Dark Pegasus Wings

I'm going to mount it on a fllying stand to get it high enough. That said, does anyone roughly know how tall the Plague Drones are?

Disaster strikes!

I bought some wings for my daemon princes and a pair for my Plague Drone conversion above.

Since it worked so well I wanted to order more, but GW doesn't stock the metal dark elf pegasus wings anymore (in fact it disappeared from the European site).

So I had to find replacements.

Thankfully, Reaper Miniatures has a vast selection of metal wings. But now the wait begins.

Since I'm still waiting on the rest of my wings I'll just paint up one as a champion (still had one of the metal plaguebearer champions left) in the meantime as a test. Still need to figure out how high I need to make him to compare to the plastic Plague Drones, though.

Well, forgot to post a tally since I was on vacation, so paint score for the last 2 months:
20 furies of Khorne
20 Flesh Hounds of Khorne
Bloodletter Command squad (musician, banner bearer)
40 Plaguebearers
2x Plaguebearer Command Squad
1 Great Unclean One
1 Daemon Prince of Nurgle
1 Epidemius

Nurgle left to paint:
9 Plague Drones (waiting on metal wings from Reaper Miniatures)
9 Beast of Nurgle (the newer model, but metal)
Nurglings (I have a heap of small nurglings, have to see how many bases I can make)
Possibly another Nurgle Daemon Prince (have wings, need to track down another metal prince).

In a non-painting update, I installed some new lighting in my game room today:

Instead of the tiny tiny single lightbulb before. Now we won't have to use nightfighting every game in the evening!

Photographs are pretty good to do in it:

Probably need some lighting from the sides to remove the rest of the shadows though.

Top-down wasn't too good because the green gaming mat distorts the colours for my poor camera:

Still working on the last 3 beasts of Nurgle, but my brother finished his Fellblade.

We're planning a big Apocalypse battle this afternoon to celebrate!

The forgeworld version does look sleeker and more 'tank'-like. The Machinator + Baneblade version is very baroque.

Grand (little) Army of Chaos Undivided @ 2013/09/01 08:33:13

Post by: Shandara

Well, the battle was fought:

4.500 pts of Sisters with 1500 pts of IG allies. Managed to lose despite the 9 penitent engines, 20 repentia and 2 battle conclaves of crusaders/death cult assassins. 3 squads of dominions failed to destroy my brother's Fellblade..

Anyways, back to the scheduled program. Some stuff arrived (skulls, skulltakers):

As my 4th herald on bloodcrusher I wanted something different. I cut out most of Skulltaker's cloak, bent the legs so they were further apart then remade the cloak greenstuff/skulls. Unfortunately the skulls are a bit bigger than I had thought, so I had to cover the entire cloak with them. Filled the gaps with some sand.

Not entirely satisfied with the result, though.

Grand (little) Army of Chaos Undivided @ 2013/09/03 14:17:58

Post by: Shandara

Some work later:

Nearly done with the mount.

For Skulltaker I worked on the cloak first:

Comparison with the original:

(notice the space between the legs, took a lot of sawing!)

The new cloak is a bit bulkier, but a lot roomier. Skulltaker can fit his legs to the side of the Juggernaut now. His knees butt against the juggernaut's shoulders. Hopefully I can glue him firmly into place.

Primed and ready to go:

Only had enough Nurglings for 6 bases (5 per base), so I'll get round to Ebay to find enough for 3 more.

Also had Scylla around:

Not sure why I bought it, but I guess I'll paint it up as a Karanak counts-as.

Grand (little) Army of Chaos Undivided @ 2013/09/09 16:19:42

Post by: Shandara

After a weekend of gaming, on to the painting!

Worked on Scylla first:

Not sure how to buff him up, I thought of giving the scales a completely different colour, but in the end decided against it. Tried to high-light the edges with bright orange but the effect isn't quite what I wanted. It needs some sort of spot colour, but what?

Also trying a nurgling base (more WIP than Scylla)

These guys are so full of character, but hard to paint (and see) the tiny details for me. The camera helps!

Post by: Shandara

I will have to try some out, I guess, thanks!

In the meantime I whipped up a Portalglyph:

Had some random resin scenery bits left from one of those GW basing kits and a metal daemon gateway thingy I picked up somewhere. Some sand to cover the edges and voila.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Some work later:

Thinking of covering it with some sort of water effect to make it more muddy. But I need to research it first how it works, don't want to mess up!

Nearly done with the Nurglings:

Also did 2 layers of water effects the last 4 days:

Since my wings for my Plague Drones haven't arrived still, on to some random stuff:

2 Daemon Princes. Going to paint them in a somewhat neutral scheme so they can serve as both Tzeentch/Slaanesh ones if needed. They are pretty big but not as big as my Khorne/Nurgle ones.

Herald of Tzeentch on Disc

Random Herald, not sure what God he will be.

Dechala the Denied One, aka Herald of Slaanesh stand-in.

Last 3 need more greenstuffing, but I should get that done today.

Work continues:

The teeth/mouth didn't turn out the way I wanted, tried to correct it but it now looks like he's using pink lipstick. Also the details have blurred despite me thinning everything (and the skin colour is just wash over plain white primer).

And the 2nd prince:

Bit busy during the weekend, but nearly done with the 2nd prince;

Still not happy with how the skin turned out, it looks too 'dry' and 'flakey'.

Oh well, I may re-try it later.

Also finished assembling/priming some Tzeentchian stuff:

And it's basically done:

All that's left to do:
* Wait for the base/flying stem/widget to arrive, delayed by Christmas
* Improvise some sort of case for it

Closeup of the pilot's cockpit:

Forgeworld supplied some transparent plastic sheet for it, unfortunately it was heavily curled up. I had to straighten it with very hot water and a press. It also was very very clear so it was hard to see the 'glass' at all. I ended up varnishing it to give it some texture and make it actually visible! Looks a bit 'frosted' now. It was also a pain to cut into the proper sizes and glue it.

Same for the gunner:

All in all this kit was fun to do! I give it an 8.5/10. Some problems include:
* Big shrinkage on the tail piece, took a lot of greenstuff/sanding to make it fit and even now there's a small 'step' in the hull section.
* HUGE and I mean HUGE blocks of resin attached to the main pieces (as fill gates). I was scared to take the razorsaw to it.
* Some detail on the huge blocks was filled with flash, especially tubing around the front section.
* Had to buy the missiles separately! For the price it should come with all 8 included!

And more:

Have 10 of these old Frateris Militia models. I will have to re-do the eyes on this one, zooming in like this shows it didn't turn out as I wanted! Bit surprising these are more true-scale than most GW models (apart from the hands/weapons).

I also started work on 18 Screamers of Tzeentch, just waiting on some bases to arrive before I start.

Received some stuff in the mail, finally was able to make a base for my Marauder Destroyer:

3/4" thick stem, the widget I got with it I put on the base. For the connection to the flyer, I used 3 layers of plastic card to make a flat square, which I glued to the top of the flying stem. Then I drilled in 3 pieces of brass rod into the stem through the square. They extend about 2cm into the flying stem and 2cm into the flyer. They fit snugly and the square surface of the plasticard stops the flyer from jiggling.

Finished the chariot:

Not really satisfied with how the chains turned out. Tried to green-stuff some first but they didn't look right. I still had a few foot of chintzy 'silver' chain from Ebay from another project so I used that.

Now starting on the flamers, will try out some paint schemes first.

It is quite difficult, the command squad was made later than the original pink horrors and doesn't match well aesthetics-wise anyway.

Originally I wanted to collect a squad of really really really old Pink Horrors (the original with the somewhat politically incorrect expressions), but there was never a command unit made for those so I used the somewhat newer command for it.

Looking forward to seeing a sisters themed knight, still more than a little jealous that I can't ally them into my army when there's great ones popping up everywhere.

Eldar titan should be fun one of the chaps in my apoc group has that one and the arms seem to be easily magnetised, midgame eldar titan arm dancing ensues often when someones being slow.

Didn't have much time to paint the knight, but I'm going for a similar scheme as my Warhound.

Will post pictures of the magnetising when it's more assembled.

Those old Armourcast Titans are very easy to pose the arms, because they're attached with bolts.

Grand (little) Army of Chaos Undivided @ 2014/03/24 16:24:23

Well hell maybe it is bolts then I never thought to look inside the arms that's what I get for assuming the arms could wiggle because of the magic of magnets eh.

The work so far:

Torso, carapace, arms, weapons, legs are all separate, not glued yet. Shoulderpads too (but will eventually be glued).

I glued a small piece of plasticard tubing to the leg mount:

and filled it with greenstuff and glued a magnet in.

Then I glued a similar piece of (bigger) tube to the inside of the torso where the hole is for the leg section:

It can swivel freely and holds the weight of the legs and base easily.

The weapon mount was more involved:

I filled the gap between the weapon shields and the arm bit with a big gob of greenstuff. When it hardened I drilled 2 holes and glued a magnet into each.

I did the same with the weapons themselves:

I didn't magnetise all the fiddly extra bits for the weapon arm, though.

Easy to swap between battle cannon and melta cannon now:

The arms can rotate as well to detach em.

Some of the pieces wouldn't lose their gloss/stickiness even after repeated washing and are somehow 'soft' to the touch. Google-fu suggests this might be due to bad mixing/casting.

Received replacement parts from FW.. they sent me an entire new Brass Scorpion..

Sadly, one of the big claws is miscast (some parts are paper thin or even HOLLOW). They really don't take a look at the cast quality even when doing a 'manual cast' do they?

Anyway, I'm going to mail them again.. but in the meantime I'll see if I can get started on it at least. The other parts look good, but let's see if they clean up well.

Busy with the Scorpion:

I primed one of the good claws and one of the bed, will see how it holds paint before I get FW to replace it.

Just need to do the rest of the basing and fix some mistakes.

Next up: Inquisition Land Raider, have had it around for a while ever since I painted those henchmen.

Back from vacation, now working on some more Slaanesh:

After this I have 23 Slaanesh Riders to do (20+command), some Fiends and a random Daemon Prince or so.

Then it's checking through my bit boxes to see if I have anything left to convert.

Work goes slow, had to try out some colours before I decided on a scheme. Still not 100% convinced it works, but at least I get it out of the way before I start on 23 Seekers.

Nice stuff! The Brass Scorpion looks especially sharp. I love the vivid palette.

Thanks!

I took the scorpion to a tournament this weekend and it ate a lot of stuff. Sadly the rest of my army wasn't so lucky...

Finished assembling the daemon prince. After stripping and cleaning it twice I had to pin most of the bits:

Once the greenstuff/liquid greenstuff dries I'll clean it up and prime it.
