Finished Female Modern Trooper (Other than Kev deciding that a detail so small humans can't comprehend it's existence needs changing)

She'll go nicely with the following mini's, already on sale:

Kev is a great sculptor and while he's done his share of the heaven-forbid-this-smut cheese cake, I've yet to see them put out a horrible sculpt.

Hasslefree had to have a fixed post here, so people could see how much awesome stuff they release

And they should do a kickstarter for plastic grimm, but that is a different matter

I'd rather not see Hasslefree get stuck in a KS and instead do what they always do: A couple of releases a month, it has been working like a charm for them for years now and I'd rather they'd keep it like that.

Wow, if they could release a larger scale plastic kit (10+ models) I would throw money at them.

It's pretty rare that there's a tasteful sculpt of a woman in this hobby, and Hasslefree does great work. Good on 'em.

In due time, knowing Kev he's working on a few projects at the same time, so we can expect more moderns later down the road.

Well, she looks like a regular human being.

As far as looking like an actual female soldier, I don't know so much about that.

I don't think you have anything to worry about there. From a couple of comments I've seen on Frothers, he's really not a fan of KS.

Funny enough Sally made a post on Facebook about it all today:

So, he says knowing he's about to fuel a serious rumour mill, let's say we had a project that a Kickstarter would actually be useful for - minis, a game, more - how far into the production process would you prefer us to be before we launch such a campaign?

So many Kickstarters fail their due dates, lots are just showing artwork or renders that will never be as good in person etc. Would you be happy waiting 3 months, 6 months, longer? Would you want one big Kickstarter for everything planned or broken up into lesser ones?

(Please note we're not asking for ideas 'for' a KS, we're asking your opinion on the logistics First person to suggest that Kev starts a Kickstarter for their own personal mini fetish get's a virtual slap )

I adore all of this new stuff Hasslefree is coming out with. The attention to detail, realism and great scaling makes for an excellent miniature. Shame they take so long to get everything sculpted though!

Looks awesome to me. Can't make an army out of one model but it's a nice start at least!

This is quite possibly the best female soldier model I've seen. THough I wonder why she has two sets of goggles? One normal ballistic gogglesl, one NVG, or something?

I'm fair sure that Artemis from Artemis Black's is working with them to help run things as well. Also pretty sure he wrote the FB post.

I believe that the set on her face are actually sunglasses.

Awesome miniature, as usual from Hasslefree.

I was wondering the same thing, and only Kevin knows for sure. My theory is that she is wearing ballistic eyewear glasses and has sand/sun, wind, and dust goggles on her helmet.

Most modern ballistic eyewear looks cool and soldiers like them. They aren't much good, however, against blowing dust and sand. The goggles, OTOH, don't stop much shrapnel but they keep out sand and dust. I had pairs of both though I rarely ever used the sand, wind, and dust goggles. Later, they were replaced by ESS brand goggles which also offered some ballistic protection.

1.) It's a awesome sculpt

2.) I've seen lots of soldiers and marines wearing sunglasses/ballistic glasses with their goggles on their helmets just as shown.

Looks great, and will go well with Kev's Battlefield 3 range. It'd be good to see some optics on that rifle though, and I'd also like to see some more (uniform) weapon options for the moderns, (and new sculpts!) since they really only work as PMCs at the moment. (since everyone uses railed M4s these days, and without the carrying handle.)

Wow, these are great. And I like how you have male models to mix them with and they will look like a natural cohesive unit opposed to a unit of men with a costumed stripper with them.

I love how the head and face is clearly female simply by keeping it simple. So many female heads fail because they go for crazy cheekbones, oversized lips and overdone eyes which result in scary looking faces. This head just looks human which is clearly female.

Holy Gak! I bought those already for sale, and these are must buys. As for the poster above who said one mini is not an army: true. But with, say Infinity, I can use most of Hasslefree's minis as convincing stand-ins that are completely acceptable. My FRRM is graced by three of them already, and I'll be using these for Briscards as well.

The sci-fi troopers would make great Loup-Garous.

As much as I like suchs things ( ) I have to agree. It's rare to see a female assassin that actually looks fit to the job and isn't just a big "HAWT AND SEXY"

I am very impressed with this miniatures. The soldiers one look fantastic. I don't have much use for them, but I would love to paint them... they look so cool.

Small features like noses and hands need to be a bit exaggerated to make them work in miniature.

The nose will look a lot smaller when you see the actual model which is about the height of the boot in the picture.

Not enough skin for Maya. Though some BL/2 inspired figures from Hasslefree might be fun. Especially with optional weapons like the moderns have...

I think Kev does the hair last, which would indicate that she's done. Not that her nose is exactly massive, especially when the figure would be shown at actual size...

They do ship to the US.

The only currency we can accept is GBP Sterling. We will sometimes barter, but goats and other livestock is definitely not a payment option!

We accept all major credit and debit cards including American Express. You can also use Paypal if you choose. Either of those methods will automatically convert your native currency into GBP Sterling.

To find out how much it comes to, have a look at:
http://www.xe.com/

One thing this shiny new website has enabled us to do is to enter individual pack weights for each catalogued item. This means that as you add items to your basket it provides a running weight total which it then uses to calculate your shipping costs based on wherever you are in the world. We think this is the fairest method as we have run at a loss on some items in the range for a while now.

We have used a shipping price matrix where we have entered prices from Royal Mail and various courier services to ensure you pay the lowest price for your shipping. Unlike some online sellers we do not make a profit on shipping charges.

You will have an option at checkout to select a tracked/ insured service. This option has been priced based on the charges imposed on us for that service. Customers in Italy, Spain, Mexico and Greece are advised to select ‘International Signed For’ as these are the countries that are most likely to lose items. We reserve the right to refuse to supply a customer who refuses to choose tracked options for their orders and repeatedly makes claims that they are lost.

Your work policies scare me a lot sometimes <<. "He saw a model with boobs! QUICK, CALL THE MORAL-POLICE! FIRE THE PERVERT!"

On topic: That other one looks pretty good I like the idea of 2 bodies, the second one could be used for a RPG character.

Sure but work in an office environment long enough and you will find someone who can take offense to anything. After all it is only a series of small steps to go from Pornographic Image --> Illustration of Naked Body --> Picture of tiny physical representation of naked body, and a lot of people will skip the middle parts.

Of course we have Brother Vini's beautifully sculpted minis which quite often have, at best, questionable contextual positions.

It very much depends on where you work, who you work for and who you work with. Suffice to say that even miniature model nudity isn't appropriate for my (and I'm sure, others') workplaces. On top of that, different locales in the world treat these things differently again.

Acting like idiots about it doesn't really do much, aside from highlight your own immaturity.

Maybe it's because I'm far too used to see people checking out sport related sites with plenty of half naked models in photo-shoots. We have plenty of those, so I always find it strange when someone spoilers a little plastic woman

And I'm sorry if I offended anyone, never meant to! I am truly amazed how people could actually be offended with this so I'm sorry. Peace! /offtopic

P.S: Oh and yeah, I guess I really did sound like an a$$ with that comment. My bad.

Two possible announcements for this guy, take your pick ...

1. Here we have 'Sack', a new member of the Modern Troopers taking advantage of the USMC minimum height requirement of 4' 10". Nicknamed for his highly modified PDW (Bonus Point for guessing why)

2. Kev has decided that 'Grymn Special Forces' might be a thing people would be interested in?

Some lovely WIP shots:

For anyone wondering how Kev makes the very initial armature of one of our minis, here's a quick snapshot - Top Left: Measured out 'tinned anealed copper wire'. Top Right: Soldered at joints. Bottom Left: Being bent into position with needle nosed pliers. Bottom Right: The final human armature. Any interest in seeing the next stage, which is the armature having been positioned and resin master props being glued to it before Kev starts adding the green stuff?

Armature process #2 (After this is would be considered a standard WIP of a figure). As you can see, the metal armature has been positioned and attached to a cork. Resin master 'props', in this case weaponry, have been glued to the metal armature. In the bottom two shots Kev has used green stuff to create the basic muscled armature and you can already see very much what the final mini will be like. Whadya think?

Armature Process #4 - No longer an armature this would be where we name the mini (Unless we lack inspiration), in this case 'Mordakai WIP 1'.

If you go back and look at the previous armature photos you'll see just how much work Kev does that you don't physically 'see' on the finished mini but that is what, we think, makes Kev one of the best in the world. Realistic balance and a sense of movement...

I just got my first order in the mail today from Hasslefree. Some quick thoughts:

I ordered on June 23rd, Shipped on the 27th, in my hands on July 3rd. Very happy with the turnaround and delivery times - there is stuff I order from the US that doesn't come that fast.

The box had some candy in it, which pleased me. Unfortunately I opened it at the table and my wife and stepson were right there and saw it, thus obliging me to share. The portion remaining was delicious nonetheless.

The sculpts themselves were incredibly crisp (I got them in resin, one was a resin master) and required zero cleanup, zero moldlines; although I did wash them in case of mold release. Ready to prime nearly out of the package if you don't wash first, you filthy savages,

The scale is... well, why tell you, when I can show you.

Below is a Forge World traitor guardsman, a (no scale listed) resin master of Gwen, a Privateer Press Commander Sorcha, a Games Workshop Khorne Berserker, 40mm resin Tiriel, a Reaper Deladrin, and a Reaper Black Orc Hero. So you can see how well they will fit in with what games you play.

All in all I am very happy with my order and would unhesitatingly recommend Hasslefree.

From their site: "We primarily manufacture 28mm scale fantasy and sci-fi figures. We work to a ‘true’ 28mm scale and not a ‘heroic’ scale which means that approximately a 5'10" tall man would be 28mm to his eye level."

As I've said before a few times in other threads, Hasslefree makes great minis, they will however not fit in well with the abominations of GW, Infinity and PP.

I suppose it might be possible if they produced two or three fairly standard shooting/running poses with separate heads. Then the character figures could be mixed in and used as officers and so on.

Hasslefree is a boutique studio, though, so the investment might be too much.

We can hope, anyway.

Infinity has some okay figures, but there's a lot of stupid crap mixed in, too. Like all the bare midsections in female Ariadna miniatures, or that stupid nun who is shoving her thonged ass out. Or the Caledonian volunteer model which is painted to show her nipples through her shirt (and probably has them showing on the model, too).

Yep, she is a modern trooper, not a sci fi trooper. As such, she fits in well with the rest of the modern squad members.

I love me those modern troopers. I have made two orders so far and can't wait for my third one of them to get the full numbers.

I agree with Melissia, I wish there was more female options, as they actually look realistic and good.

That's the thing, I guess. The finished figure that Kev has sculpted is really very much a one-off purchase, due to pose and gear. If she had more gear (chest rig, optional helmet head, maybe a pack) a "squad" type weapon and of course a "squad" pose as opposed to a "character" pose then she'd be a potential multi-purchase figure like the guys are. So I'll buy her, but I'll only buy one of her, while I'll buy multiples of the guys (adding to me existing multiples of the earlier ones). So her sales figures will accordingly be much, much lower than the boys.

When I do skin I try to get a nice opaque base down and then work from that.

For Marina (Left) I start with a thin Bugmans Glow all over the skin areas and then 2 or 3 base coats of thinned dwarf flesh and it should be pretty well covered (Dwarf Flesh is an old GW paint and they don't really make a decent alternative but you can still buy it from coat d arms) Then I do a quick wash with heavily watered down Bugmans glow with a little flow enhancer added. After that the skin is highlighted up with thinned dwarf flesh gradually mixed with white.

For Boudi (left) who I wanted to have lighter skin I do the same thing but using Tallern Flesh (old foundation paint but vallejo's flesh works well also) then based over with Reaper Rosy skin, given a subtle red/pink wash and highlighted with the Rosy skin highlight and white.

7TV seems to be using Hasslefree as their primary source of miniature for their promotional images. It'd be nice for even more sculpts that are based off of tv shows and games, but they're already spoiling us as it is. ^^

To be fair, Daniel Jackson is in the first movie. He plays the nerdy guy who wants to save the planet. Just the actor changed between the movie and the series, same with Jack O'Neil (who my gerbil is named after)

There is also a General Hammond model who was recently shown, again big from the TV show. Nice thing about the SG-1 themed characters, is they also make good generic modern troopers

I don't see the problem. The spine doesn't look out of place to me, though perhaps the upper body armor is misleading. The torso plates should be fine too, so long as they are not hard riveted to each other or a solid backing. You can get a lot of play with plates riveted to a flexible backing.

Some updates with final versions of some of the WIPs we've been seeing.

Look at that, a non-cheesecake female elf.

I believe that's sort of the point. Though Ellie's figure looks a little off for some reason... the hair perhaps?
EDIT: Mind, these are still WIPs, no? So it will probably be resolved.

UNNAMED BUSY MOM!!!!

I need that model for my wife! And another for me!

So, what is the deal with this contest? Will more than one of these models eventually go up for sale? Because, ifit's only the single highest-voted model, then it will just be another unimaginative Busty McThongjob. I guess Hasslefree needs to add another of those to their catalog..?

The top three of each category will be chosen, that's all I know. And by the way, these are not done by Kev, but by forum members. I can only hope that the steampunk gal and the Fallout themed raider win.

Damn. Sure would have been nice to own that mini. I don't suppose it would be possible to find out who sculpted it and buy it from him or her, would it?

Damn.

......

But I'm glad Hasslefree is getting this opportunity to add 18 more butt cheeks to their line-up. Apparently those are good for business.

Dude, if it bothers you so much, don't buy there, simple as that.

It's not Hasslefree that bothers me. It's the way voting works on the internet that bothers me.

I guess I'm saying that I'm cynical. I do not believe that the most interesting or creative sculpts will win over the most titillating. That's okay. It isn't ideal for me, but it will probably make Kev money, so it's great. I hope it does really well for him. Then he can finally get around to sculpting Stargate Atlantis...

EDIT: For a good analogy, we all know that FLGS make more money off of Magic cards than they do off of wargaming miniatures. We know that it's good that the stores carry a lot of Magic cards. It's good for them, so it's good for us. But it would still hurt to see your FLGS' manager consistently bring in more Magic cards instead of new wargaming figures, no matter how much we know it's good for business.

Sorry if this has already been asked, but does anyone have some shots of the modern troopers side-by-side with some other models? Particularly next to Infinity models?

Looking all over for some Chasseur models and these would be perfect if their proportions are similar.

Theres an image of one of them beside a boarding shotgun SAS model down in the Community Pledging thread right now

I hear that the user who took that picture is incredibly handsome as well. But he doesn't have any chasseur models sadly, so he can't help you with direct comparisons.

This lady is the prototype of the female version of the powered armour I have been working on in Sculptris. I used a pic of the the WIP of the male suit for reference and just adjusted bits to match the female physiology. I think it works quite well and it has inspired me to try and get the virtual suit finished as soon as I am allowed.

Depends on what fluff you want to talk about.

Female stormtroopers turn up quite often. - The first one that comes to my mind is in Aaron Dembski Bowden's Helsreach novel.

Absolutely.

Cadia is 100% equal opportunities employer. Everyone fights, noone quits.

As for the rest of the Imperium, there is plenty to reference female dominated cultures and even more supporting mixed gender forces serving in military applications throughout the black library novels.

That's looking really good. I've bought some Hasslefree stuff in the past though, and I'm wary about what she'd look like next to GW stuff as a storm trooper stand in.
