Washes are my favourite paints. They just work so well

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2016/11/29 17:52:54

Agreed! Washes do so much for so little! That base is looking excellent Knightley, definitely worthy of the knight to stand upon it!

@Graven - Very exciting, I keep looking at this thing and giggling

@WarbossDakka - I remember when devlan mud wash first came out, it was literal skill wash, paint the model, do the wash, congratulate your self for a job well done.

@Justaerin - Cheers!

Update: More work on layering on the base, the Rhino has had its edges done etc

Very Nice.. like all the color ranges your using , breaks up the base well.

What chapter is the Rhino from? I'm guessing a Smurf or (god forbid) a Crimson Fist?

Lovely painting by the way.

Post by: Knightley

@Solar - Cheers, I was tempted to keep it to three colours across the whole base, but when I did a little test it looks bizarre and jarring, so much more colour was added!

@WarbossDakka - Thanks! see below for the tank reveal

Update: Weathering was added as well as some free hand. Grass will need to be added and water effect in one of the shell holes around the feet

Nothing warms a heretics heart more than to see a smurf-mobile lay broken underfoot. Truly a glorious base Knightley. Is that a premade base, or made of your bitz?

Wow, lots of hate for the Ultramarines in this thread. As a Dark Angels player, I'm just glad that wreck isn't green...

@Justaerin - Thanks! the base is an old GW scenery piece called battlescape IIRC

@d00m - Some would chastise me for my puns, some, well they just run with it

@WarbossDakka - Aww come on, I worked that in perfectly, and you know I'll continue to make even more puns with other extremities!

@Zerg - Course there is, its a common thread because of Matt Ward IIRC, oh and as an FYI there is some DA wreckage on the base as well, a shoulder pad and a helmet.

@Gits - Thank you

Update: working from the ground up, onto the toes!

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2016/12/01 20:17:22

I'm going to be ignoring a lot of the titles, aren't I

You gotta start somewhere, and the toes are probably the best spot.

@WarbossDakka - Hahah, course most people may just open up the thread and look at the pretty photos.

Update: Feet pretty much done, needs some squiggles and parchment names, but all in all done

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2016/12/04 20:42:06

Post by: JustaerinAtTheWall

These titles are toe-tally rediculous! But those feet are lookin' pretty sweet, squiggle away good sir!

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2016/12/05 19:23:25

Post by: Knightley

@Justaerin - I know, I can't help myself. I think I'll squiggle the toes once I apply them to the base.

Update: Moving up to the legs now, base colours applied and washes started

I swear the jokes get worse.

All jokes aside, I can't see myself ever getting a Titan, it would take me ages just to get the colours right! Well done either way.

The jokes in the titles are stunning, perfectly suited to be dad jokes for years to come.

The big robot is coming along really well Knightley, how's the motivation levels going while working on something this massive yet detailed?

@WarbossDakka - As most things, it will get worse before it gets better I tell you the colour side of things is something I'm still struggling with, so don't feel to bad.

@Mad - Who's to say they aren't my dad jokes for now! motivation levels are waning at this point, legs aren't the most fun thing to paint.

@EDC - Thanks

@Cam - There are so many details I'm worried I'll get caught up in trying to pick them all out :(

@d00m - Love it, some puns coming in are always appreciated.

@Cleatus - Cheers!

Everything sacred must have skulls , and cogs, or the machine spirit will be cross and that invites chaos.

@Graven - Thanks, I'll do my best not to forget (mind you with all these reminders I wont have an excuse eh?)

@WarbossDakka - What hilarious is once the shin armour is in place, you can only see like 1 or 2 of them, go figure right?

@EDC - Cultist conversions? Can't say I see what you mean.

@Theophony - Purge the unclean as they say

Update: figured I needed a bit more to show than just legs today, so over the weekend there was some airbrush work.

Is that the main armour colour done in one go? That's some serious pace going there.

I always laugh when I see purity seals on titan armour. Like who would put that there?

Looking forward to the event I'll have to dub the "squiggling". It will be glorious.

It's like those stickers you used to get for doing something in school. I just imagine this little techpriest jumping up, slapping a purity seal on his leg, and saying "you've earned this!"
But so far, wow. Everything's lookin' pretty good despite the size of this project. Keep going Knightley!

For me I love the way it looks right now, never really get the whole brightly coloured huge walking robot thing, battleship grey is so much more practical. Don't get me wrong the paintwork on some of these monsters is amazing, but a reality check would be, how and why would you do it.

Post by: Knightley

@WarbossDakka - Yeah just the primary layer, I tried something a little different and had a darker section of each plate to the bottom right of said plate, it'll then be edge highlighted as normal.

@Justaerin - Cheers, I can imagine a little tech preist giving the leg a hug, and shedding a little tear at how awesome his titan is for getting so many participation purity seals.

@Dysartes - Some of them don't know they're grey

@Zerg - sonofa... you had me going there for a moment

@Mad - I await that moment when the sea of grey goes apocalyptic removing the sea of tyranids and everything in a 30 inch radius

@Solar - Yeah, I am fully getting super excited for this thing, I did another test fit before getting underway with the glue and I am very excited

@Cam - Heh, well I might shatter that with big swathes of Red, White and a spot of blue

@d00m - This guy, this guy gets it, them puns are on point!

Update: Rise my hound, rise.... well at least on to your legs, we'll sort the rest of you soon enough. Using a 2 part epoxy resin to ensure this guy isn't going to fall apart when handled. Will let you know how it went tomorrow

@Gits - Yep, having a standing model now is definitely a "Step" in the right direction (god I'm terrible with my puns of late)

@d00m - my man!

All dirty jokes aside, it's cool watching this thing come together. A model like this would be out of my league both price-wise and hobby skill-wise, but I enjoy watching everyone else put their Titans together. You seem to be making more progress than the others so far, too!

@WarbossDakka - I asked the legs to work the camera but all I got was lifeless and rigid, I did the best with what I was given

@Justaerin - awesome, I was worried the blue would overpower the whole thing, good to hear its just eye catching

@Gits - Oh yes, needs to get into some 'squats' (not the retconned ones) and enjoy the burn.

@Zerg - I'm always happy, to see you. I do have to admit this model has tested me like no other, getting the legs to fit in the right way and I am always in fear of making a mistake.

@EDC - Thanks man

@Dysartes - Hah, I'll need to make some arms in the vogue pose, Madonna would be very jealous

@d00m - Stand up and take a bow for the best pun this week

The leg-plate's connected to the...thigh plate! The thigh-plate's connected to the...hip plate! (sorry, trying to come up with a joke after a hard day at work and this was the best I could do!)

Anyways, those thigh plates are looking pretty awesome (and just look at those squiggles!). Were a lot of those details like the purity seals sculpted on, or are they add-on bits from your bits box?

Post by: Knightley

@WarbossDakka - Haha, in which case I've only given you a taste

@Gits - Thanks

@AoV - Cheers!

@Zerg - Pretty much all the details were glued on the plate, all the parchments and skulls are additional

Update: Started on the lower let plates, I think I should have the red go further down and not stop to abruptly

@Alaricuk - Totally worth it as a project, my advice would be plan, plan, test fit, re-adjust the plan, test fit, come up with a new plan, sod the plan and just wing it

@Zerg - Oh, yes and some of this wont be able to be seen once the guys are in!

@Brushcommando - Hahha very true, I would need to get my medical practitioners licence to finish the head off

@Cam - Merry Xmas Cam, hope your day goes well! I wouldn't say its a great pace, I've seen many painters chew through much more than I could do.

@Dysartes - I hope to get it all done by the end of January (its summer here in NZ so I expect more time out of the house for the next month)

@WarbossDakka - Merry Christmas Warboss! thanks for the motivational words

@Azazelx - Thanks!

Update: Merry Xmas all! today I'll let you see the crew now that they are completed

You certainly seem a-head of the game, Knightley.

Really like those monitors with what appears to be lines of text - is that done in a similar fashion to the Knightley Patented Squiggle Process, but with a lighter version of the colour you used to paint the monitor with?

@Solar - course, would you expect anything different?

@Graven - Cheers man!

@AoV - Thank you

Some of the better detail on a lot of GW/FW models ends up covered up when the model is assembled. Kinda defeats the purpose. Anyhow, the cockpit looks amazing; you really did great picking out all those little details. How much is left to do on this thing?

@Tipios - I bet it was a major catch up, what was the last thing I had painted since your last check up?

@Dysartes - Common ideal, try to come up with something witty/funny about a painted piece, end up saying looks good. TBH i'd be happy with a bad pun

@Zerg - I know right, there is a ton of detail on the inside that will never been seen again. I know its there but everyone looking at it wont.

@Graven - You other heretics can't deny....

@d00m - Tell you what, cook something up and I'll let you know if it appeases papa squiggle

Happy New Year Dysartes! I'm sure I can tame the beast, it''ll just take time.

Wow another year has come and gone! I guess I should have a look at my goals for 2016 and lets see if I managed to tick any of them off?

Items for 2016
1. Complete a Tau Army
Smashed this out in the beginning of the year and rather quickly, The colour scheme was very easy to do and I could power through many units quickly

2. Do a Large Lord of War model (possibly a Forgeworld model)
Tick, I also started on another, shame I couldn't get wolfy done before the end of the year, but i'll be on track for this year

3. Clear out my Assembled/unprimed Box and paint those models
I got started, got things primed and underway, but certainly not completed

4. Make Markers for stunned/Shaken/Immobilized/Hull points for the table
Whelp, I totally forgot about this one, this year eh?

5. Play More games vs mates
Oh yes, Mad and I have had almost monthly games which is a ton more than the previous year! Thank you Mad!

6. Get Faster at Commission work
With the Tau and the deathwatch I painted I felt my speed was quicker this year than last

All in all a distracting year, the large projects got done, but the commission work did take up a chunk. All up I painted 249 models this year, which is less than last year, but not by much, a lot more commission work this year I guess.
2017 goals?
1. Make Markers for stunned/Shaken/Immobilized/Hull points for the table
2. Complete another Large Forgeworld model
3. Finish my assembled box models (mainly GK's left now)
4. Convince my Brother to start an Army
5. Maybe paint some more D&D models

As part of the year in review here are the painted models on the table
2016 Picture

2017 Picture I've had to adjust the pictures due to the new room I moved into.

The OSL looks fine, nice and subtle like it should be. Too often I see it overdone, even by professional painting studios. It shouldn't overwhelm the rest of the paintjob, and yours certainly doesn't, which is great. I wouldn't even attempt OSL myself at this point, but maybe someday. Might need an airbrush first, though.

@WarbossDakka - Heh, thanks, if I were to do it again, I would go darker further out and add a bit more glow, I say this now that the trial run went well

@Justaerin - All done by dry brushing my man!

@Tipios - Thank you

@Graven - More OSL? crikey a little demanding aren't ya

@AoV - Cheers!

@Zerg - I did mine all by brush, and I was of the same opinion as you OSL still scares the pants off me and every time I try it I fear I'll ruin the model.

@Cam - Thanks, if I can supply an itch to someone.... might want to get that checked out by a doctor

@Gits - Merry Xmas and happy new year to you

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2017/01/07 13:59:06

Post by: Nevelon

I like the effect, but it looks very regular. I think I’d have preferred a more scattered/swirly pattern. Right now you have curves, which implies a certain amount of free-form organic patterns, but they are in regular intervals, which is far more ordered.

Not that curves can’t be regular. If you had a subtle pattern of sine waves dancing across the core, that seems very laser-like. But with the core line and bright spots escaping from it, I feel that the escapees are leaving in an orderly fashion.

IMHO, etc.

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2017/01/07 17:10:30

Post by: WarbossDakka

For the effect itself though, it looks great getting bright toward the ends. And while it does look 'orderly', doesn't necessarily mean bad. Just do some stray squiggles and you should be sorted!

Post by: Knightley

@Graven - Thanks, I had just done the energy beam down the center, but realised there was a lot of real estate that wasn't used, so added the off shot energy bits.

@Dysartes - Cool, that was the goal!

@Tipios - Thank you

@AoV - Cheers!

@Nev - Thats some great feedback, I agree with you on a lot of points there as well, the goal was to mimic the effect I made on the spoilered weapon, but as the barrels were a touch larger I wanted to fill the space a bit more however, felt that lightening would be a touch out of place as its focusing the power. I've pretty much done the turbo laser for now, but will consider going back over and adjusting some of the effects, again thanks for the feedback!
Spoiler:

@WarbossDakka - Maybe I should just squiggle all over the barrels eh?

Update: I added some squiggles to the body of the gun, I hadn't read the comments for the ideas on the energy bits of the barrels.

@M.K - Indeed Crisp and Clean!

@Justaerin - Thank you!

@d00m - I like the sound of that, Sir Squiggles the bold

@Zerg - Cheers!

Update: Phew, well that was one heck of a mission, time to go a little bit smaller and work on some troops for a change of pace. Almost feel like I've spent to long on one model and suffering burn out :( So right now, working on 15 interceptor packs for some metal interceptors.

You know it. We don't let people in with just Knights. Warhound, Reaver or Warlord. Sometimes those dirty Xenos titans can play too.

Goes from a massive titan to little backpacks with the same high quality of work.

I've seen the titan in person now, and it is AWESOME! Very nice work and could spend a lot of time looking at it. Definitely a good "distraction" unit on the table haha. The base by itself is full of details let alone the model itself.

Going to have to something impressive to top the titan in 2017

Post by: Knightley

@Justaerin - Oh yes, 15 old school metal GK's to go with these packs, going to be interesting for sure!

@WarbossDakka - Thank you

@Mad - I know right, I needed to have downgraded to a Knight, then a NDK, then a dreadnaught, then a marine, then backpacks, I'm doing it all wrong haha.

@EDC - The build process was tough, the plans provided by FW weren't that handy, it showed the completed titan, and in some instances I had no idea how they got bits to where they were, so my first bit of advice is look at youtube, forums, blogs about people building a titan, learn from their mistakes! Regarding bodies, yes there is, but they aren't painted just yet, that will be up next

Update: 15 interceptor packs take a while eh

My favorite part of having a Titan on the field is the range of the guns. "Yeah, I'm going to shoot that thing waaaaaay over there"

A terrifying sight to behold! One of the few reasons I want a titan, just to be able to shoot anything I want to and not worry about armor values. The price and paint time is a major detractor, it'd never be finished!
On another note, those interceptors are lookin' real clean there Knightley, keep it up!

@Gits - Oh he was a centre piece of destruction for sure, lots of comments on the painting as well, mainly did you paint the interior, my god your insane, you wont ever see it, cue taking the cockpit roof off and the centre bit to show the internals, oh, well that looks awesome.

@Whale - Oh yeah, I hadn't bothered to read his stats, I got to look at his guns and their range and basically said, the table is 100" long, I'm going to sit here and shoot everything. In the picture, there was a multi tiered bastion with 4 squads in it, first round two D shots imploded it.

@Justaerin - Cheers, 4 months was a huge time investment, I'm happy to get him done, but never again.

@WarbossDakka - Thank you!

@Cam - It's all good, I know real life comes in to play far to much

@Mad - Yeah buddy!, tau aint got anything on me!

@EDC - There were two imperial players, 1500p each and the titan and Thunderhawk added on. The chaos side had 1500 each and the bastions/defense lines/bunkers as well as Erebus + Contemptor + squad of chosen I think.

@Solar - I'm itching to try him in another apoc game with knights and a warlord, rumour has it March may be when that happens.

@Cam - Always a worry that, you kind of get used to using a hugh brush, going back to a smaller one is hard.

@Mad - Not quite, I do have a completed squad, and yes the Carnifexes did mince those

Update: started on edge highlighting the armour now

Also had a sweet 4 player 8k game with me,LDP, Mad, and my brother. Ended turn 6 with heavy losses on the Demons/Tyranid side, I had a potential 4 lists to battle with and the GK's got called up for duty. Teamed up with LDP and we hid in our metal boxes (razorbacks) for a few turns before turning out the pain. - will upload any pics I took, may have only been one though.

Looking very nice Knightley. The Spartan's always been a cool "little" tank, if only they weren't so big!

@Whale - Not quite, its the Spartan

@WarbossDakka - Cheers, it was a delight to get the colour match like all by chance.

@Justaerin - Agreed! My hands, while large, struggle to keep this thing in hand during painting.

@AoV - Thanks!

@Mad - Thank you dude, its a long slog, but should be done quicker than the titan at least

@Januine - Worth it man, totally worth it.

Update: Front and top underway

@Justaerin - Follow the step! it's really the only advice I can offer at this point

@EDC - Thanks!

@WarbossDakka - Agreed, I wish I could stomach painting the internals of another model, I could have done the underside of the door (just as detailed)

@Solar - Cheers

Update: More work done on the top, Next the sides!

Yeah, I don't blame you. I find it a bit of wasted effort painting something that you'll basically never see. The only exception would be painting something like a titan, get your money's worth (I'm yet to paint one, though it isn't high on my priotities at the moment). Very well done Knightley, will be great to see it all together.

Gah, looking awesome as usual... You pump out really good quality work at such a good pace that it makes some of us look like sloths with arthritis in comparison

It is good motivation to check in and see what you have gotten through though... helps get me back to the paint table when I feel a bit lazy.

Keep up the great work!

@WarbossDakka - Chur

@Mad - I wouldn't say its pumping models out, I would say a consistent pace!

Update: washes applied, god that took some time.

That Spartan is coming along nicely! It's a very cool model and you're acing it so far! How exactly are you applying the washes? Do you use a fine brush and very slowly and carefully apply the shade paint, or do you put it on kind of messy (like me) and then just fix the spots where you don't want shade with the regular armor color?

Dead sexay work on that Spartan, mate. I wish I could get something big actually assembled and then painted.

Post by: Knightley

@Justaerin - I would agree with you on the pottle sizes, I go through so much badab black its a crime!

@Zerg - Interesting question, I've adjusted how I paint now that I have an airbrush, Back in the beginning I would basecoat everything in a dark colour of the main colour I was doing, I'd then cover the entire model in washes, then layer up each panel with 2 grey coats etc, then highlight. That process to aaaaaages, then watched one video of Our Lord and Saviour Duncan Rhodes and adjusted my painting style to only applying washes in the recesses, then tidying up afterwards, this sped up the process for me.

@Azazelx - Assembly was a fether imo, all these forge world models, or heck anything in resin, is a pain to assemble. Stay away and stick to plastic

Update: Started with layering, reds, parchments and whites first

Squiggles inbound, BRACE FOR IMPACT!

Very clean, and do you still use Badab Black or do you just call the GW black wash that?

@Gits - I know, its daunting, I don't want to overdo it

@WarbossDakka - Soon, very soon....

@Justaerin - Yeah sorry its nuln oil, but I will always refer to it as badab black for nostalgia sake.

@Mad - This man knows what he's talking about

@EDC - Cheers!

I usually drybrush my edge highlights. It's messy and requires some cleanup afterwards, but I tend to screw up when I try doing it the other way.

@Gits - Oh god yes, such a pain!

@Master Azalle - Cheers

@Zerg - I had thought on doing that, but the consistent look of my army took over and I had to edge highlight

Update: finished up last night, took some snaps on the phone, will do better pics tonight

Looks stunning. One tiny niggle is that the bloke up top blends in a bit too much. Could you bear to do a red rim around the cupola?

Wow... he obviously blends in really well I didn't even notice it the first couple of looks. Guess it means he is less likely to get a sniper round to the head if he is blending in though

The sad thing is I've got plenty o'resin. The tragic thing is that it mostly sits unassembled and unpainted. Either because of stuff in the queue ahead of it or the nightmare of assembly.

That finished Spartan is a thing of beauty. So clean and crisp, and the Inquisition doors really make it look even more special.

@Gits - Excellent! I always like hearing I've inspired someone with my painting, that's made my morning

@Solar - Cheers, they were a pain to apply, I selected the wrong brush to begin with :(

@Graven - Good point, well raised I might go back and do the cupola area in bronze as that should frame it just right, cheers for the feedback!

@WarbossDakka - Stick with a Landraider IMO

@Mad - Oh he's very sneaky sneaky, I should give him a sword as well

@Master Azalle - Thanks, I hope to fix that!

@EDC - You say that, but after a while I end up raging as I get sloppy

@Cam - Thank you!

@Azazelx - I feel bad for you and excited in a 50/50 mix on that one, Bad for you as assembly blows. Happy for you as the models do look frickin amazing!

Update: better pics I hope, pictures of large models are hard to do.
