Good news for those who aren't too keen on the audio books

Welcome to Enhanced Audio Editions. These eBooks contain not only the full production scripts but the complete audio dramas too. Read along with the audio and experience the action firsthand.

These files contain both the complete audio, and the audio scene-by-scene. This allows you to listen whichever way you’d prefer. If you’d like to listen to the full drama in one go, you can. And if you decide you’d rather listen one scene at a time, you can.

They often also include maps and illustrations to enrich your enjoyment.

Now that you’re fully arrayed for the battle ahead, we hope you find them as enjoyable as we do.

Not every audio book they've done -- yet ..? -- but might be of interest to some.

Also now available -- in e-book form anyway

http://www.blacklibrary.com/warhammer-40000/catechism-of-hate-ebook.html

THE STORY
Among the hallowed ranks of the Adeptus Astartes, few have attained such renown as Ortan Cassius – Ultramarines Chaplain and Master of Sanctity. Hero of the first Tyrannic War, his name is legend. When the hive fleets target the world of Styxia, Cassius leads the defence, marshalling the Ultramarines against the xenos monstrosities.

ABOUT THE BOOK
Available for the first time since its Limited Edition release, Gav Thorpe's Space Marines Battle novella is presented in eBook format

My first (admittedly jaded) thought?

Black Library 2017 News/Rumours Thread : Xmas Advent @ 2014/01/17 13:06:47

Post by: Bloodwin

I'm glad they are bundling them as there have been times when I have wanted to know how someone's name was spelled and some audio drama authors make horrible choices for names that when said aloud sound very similar. In Helion rain one of the scouts and the Captain had very similar names and it was very confusing when they cut back to the Captain. That said I got the Pandorax audio drama which had the script in and reading along quickly became a problem as I was reading faster than the narrator spoke and almost spoilered it. While I am at it the maps in BL books and audio packages are rubbish. They are oversimplified and that detracts from their value for me. I might be expecting too much but I was hoping for something that would enable me to build or set up a gaming table rather than a map of the sector or continent.

I'm about halfway through Wolf of Sigmar, CL Werner's last book in the Black Plague trilogy. Everything is coming to a head and its pretty intense.

Cameos by Laurelorn Wood Elves, who barely got a mention in both the Empire and Wood Elf Army Books was pretty neat. There's a werewolf of questionable motive, and every one else is up to their usual tricks. The Skaven are plotting against each other while trying to conquer the Empire, the Necromancer Van Hal is recovering from summoning a dozen zombie dragons from the previous novels epic battle finale, while his apprentice plots against him. And then of course we have the humans, who are every bit as fickle, ruthless(the Grand Theogonists version of cleaning house was incredibly merciless, but also brilliant) and devious as the Skaven, but tempered by the nobility of Mandred "the Wolf of Ulric" and his supporting cast.

Another knock out of the park by CL Werner.

Please do the rise Gilles le Breton next, Black Library and get Mr. Werner to write it. Guarantee you'll sell some Bretonian models!

My prediction (tailored specifically to recent cries of GWs doom) will see the return of C.S. Goto and his work, with the release of Goto-ology the compilation of all his black library work. He will write the final chapter in the long running Horus heresy series titled "Final Emperor Gear revengeance second son" in which the battle of Terra is recounted by Goto. Will be limited edition and 400$.

Down to less than 100 "BL Live" tickets for this years event

http://www.blacklibrary.com/Warhammer/bl-live-nottingham-2014.html

of note..

The event will also see the launch of a brand new hardback anthology – Renegades of the Dark Millennium – featuring tales of the twisted servants of the Ruinous Powers. Not only will Black Library Live be the first chance for you to get this book, but you will actually get a copy as part of your ticket price!

I've been to a few of these in the past and they've been most enjoyable -- if perhaps somewhat hard on the wallet ( and then the shoulder with regards to carrying), alas.

Am quite keen to get the Archaon book by Mr. Sanders which should be there if all goes well.

while not as good of a represntation as i would have hoped for, it looks like Mortarion to me...
Death Guard armor, big scythe, rebreather...
it's just the wings that look too clean, and Khorne-ish...

while i don't have a problem with the GK fluff, i do think it's funny that they have made a big to-do of the most hated piece of new lore in the Codex...

That Mortarion is horrible. It's shorter than pre heresy Mortarion and daemon prince Mortarion is described as being almost twice that size. Also a story about Draigo...

Mr Wraight wrote the following on the BL Blog

Hey Black Library fans,
On today’s blog, Chris Wraight, chronicler of the V Legion and honorary son of Chogoris, joins us to celebrate the release in print of his first Horus Hersey novel, Scars, and talk White Scars.

Eddie: Thanks for joining us today, Chris. Here at Black Library, we’re all very excited to see the release of so many new Horus Heresy titles that focus on the V Legion. Where did you get your inspiration for writing about the White Scars?

Chris: The White Scars ended up being an amalgam of several sources: the traditional ‘wild-rider’ Mongol imagery, some concepts taken from a more general Asiatic cultural background, a strong flavour of shamanic magic and aspects of a more disciplined, Terran-inspired Legion ethos. There’s a definite Zen slant to their philosophy – a focus on harmony and mysticism. Unlike many of the other Loyalist Legions, they never abandoned the Stormseers (for the reasons, read the book!), and that’s kept them on the ‘outside’ of the Imperial structure. Of course, there’s also the combat specialisms, which in the White Scars' case boils down to one thing: speed. They’re very, very skilled jetbike riders, and their void-war skills are legendary. Trying to convey that in the book was a big challenge, and lots of fun to attempt.

Eddie: You've written about a few Space Marine Chapters and Legions now. How are the White Scars different?

Chris: Primarily, they’re happy about what they do. There’s no angst in the Heresy-era White Scars. Unlike, say, the Word Bearers or the Blood Angels, they have no deep-seated psychic or gene-related flaws, and their appointed role – fast-attack troops – suits them down to the ground. The Heresy corrupts all things, and this state will not last. However, while it does, it was great to write about a Legion that functions pretty much optimally. Their weaknesses are the necessary flip-side of this – they’re bad at administering the territories they win, or running protracted sieges, or even keeping in touch with the core Crusade. Unlike, say, the Ultramarines, they’re basically a one-dimensional army. That dimension is pretty special, though.

Eddie: White Scars in the 31st Millennium traditionally ride to battle on a Legion jetbikes. What would your preferred method of transportation be in the far future and why?

Chris: I’d like an F-Type, please. In red, with a soft-top. All sales of Scars will go towards this lifetime goal.

Eddie: And finally, all the White Scars in your books take a new name when they become Space Marines, but what Space Marine name would you choose for yourself if you were a part of the V Legion?

Chris: My full name would be Olon nom Olson Jag’uar. Which, according to my Khorchin lexicon, roughly translates as ‘His many books eventually earned him a Jaguar’.

Eddie: Thanks for joining us Chris. We’re eagerly looking forward to what you have in store for the White Scars in the future.

You can order your copy of Chris’s new Horus Heresy novel Scars here. You can also pick up the prequel, Brotherhood of the Storm, here.

Until next time, happy reading

What I want to know, is when are they going to put all the audio books in a paperback edition. I don't mind e-novels, but I like my book in my hand, and all the short stories they have out, you could spend a fortune on trying to get them all. The short stories omnibus they have put out, seem to be the same short stories over in each book with a couple of new ones added.

So any info on a paperback collection of e-novels or audio books would be great.

Just finished the HH short story Wolf of Ash and Fire that you get as a free bonus for ordering Macragge's Honour. It is set before Ullanor and covers the Emperor beating the snot out of the Greenskins, nice for him to actually feature in a battle for a change and its quite good despite being very short. If they meant this to showcase their short stories to customers who haven't tried them before then it has backfired in my case as no way would I pay for a short story that short, I'll be waiting for the compilations.

Hi folks,

Happy Monday!

To celebrate our Facebook page reaching 45,000 Likes, (and by the way, if you haven’t Liked us, why not?) here is a sneak peek at the next novel from Rob Sanders:

Featuring Chaos, the Empire, dark elves, Valkia, Be’lakor, dragons – yes, plural! – and, of course, Archaon himself, this is the full story of the Everchosen (well, the first half of the full story) – starting long before he was the big bad guy we all know him as now.

It's about the man he was before he started on his path to damnation, and it shows how he was turned from the righteous path of Sigmar's worship and crafted into an instrument of the Ruinous Powers.

Archaon: Everchosen is released later in the year and will be one of the exclusive pre-release titles at Black Library Live on Saturday March 1st. Tickets are still available, but hurry up, as there are only a few left.

Rob Sanders will also be there to answer your questions about the book and will be happy to sign your copy too.

I've got two or three on my bedside table that I haven't touched in months so I know that feeling all too well but I recently picked up the first Ghosts book and am really enjoying another run through those. And that is making me want to ask if anyone knows when the next big GG/Pariah/HH book from Abbnett is coming out, but I fear I shall be disappointed with the answer.

This awesome UK weather-inspired piece will be the cover art for Horus Heresy: The Scripts II, featuring the scripts from several audio dramas, including The Sigillite, Honour to the Dead and Burden of Duty.

It will be released exclusively through blacklibrary.com in April.

In the meantime, if you haven’t already, take a look at the first Scripts book here.

Great, more poxy scripts. How about writing them up into proper novels if they weren't in the first place?

GW made BL about collecting rather than reading. That's the problem. I dunno why they think people want to collect books for the sake of collecting. Used to buy BL books monthly, now haven't bought anything in a year (last was Betrayer IIRC).

I've got two or three on my bedside table that I haven't touched in months so I know that feeling all too well but I recently picked up the first Ghosts book and am really enjoying another run through those. And that is making me want to ask if anyone knows
when the next big GG/Pariah/HH book from Abbnett is coming out, but I fear I shall be disappointed with the answer.

Amazon UK has The Warmaster (GG) Hardback out in July.

Maybe they should make a rule set for them. How many points in a squad of Space Marine Battles books? Looks like I'll need some more Ultramarines omnibuses for HQ.

And I wonder when the next BL MMPB will come out. I haven't seen anything but trades or HC for half a year or so.

The HH MMPB have been ticking out at the same rate as their HB counterparts, just several months behind.

I got Mark Of Calth (the first HH book I haven't dropped whatever I was reading as soon as it arrived in order to start, such has my enthusiasm waned) a few weeks ago, I think Vulkan Lives is next, in a month or two?

EDIT - Yep, Vulkan Lives end of May, Unremembered Empire later in the year.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Master-Sanctity-Legacy-Caliban-Thorpe/dp/1849705186/ref=pd_sim_b_15

The Legacy of Caliban echoes down through the ages, and the secretive mission of the Dark Angels Space Marines continues. Interrogator-Chaplain Asmodai sees treachery and deceit everywhere he turns - while this serves him well in his hunt for the Fallen, it also strains the Chapter's relations with their Imperial allies. With their true quarry now seemingly within their grasp, Brothers Annael and Telemenus find themselves at the forefront of a new operation that could shake the Imperium itself to its very core.

Nice looking cover, been enjoying this series.

New Horus Heresy Cover Art

Wow!

Space Marines versus dinosaurs...

Now, Space Marines don’t run away from much, but when your opponent is a bipedal primordial giant, a ‘tactical withdrawal’ is acceptable:

And if all this action wasn’t enough, there’s a whole load of bad stuff raining from the skies onto this planet. I am not going here for a holiday!

This will be the cover for David Annandale’s debut Horus Heresy novel, focusing on the Shattered Legions in the wake of Isstvan V. I really enjoyed David’s work with Yarrick and I’m looking forward to seeing what he does with his first Horus Heresy novel.

The Damnation of Pythos will be released in July 2014.

And if you can’t wait that long to read about dinosaurs grappling with Space Marines, check out Promethean Sun, by Nick Kyme, and Flesh of Cretacia, by Andy Smillie.

– Adam, wannabe dinosaur hunter

I've been waiting for a full novel about the Shattered Legions since they first appeared in the series. They were some of the more intriguing characters to be introduced in the more recent novels. I think it'll be neat to see how the three Legions come together as a unit despite their different styles, temperments and recent losses and start striking back at the traitors. If they have to do that while fighting dinosaurs on a planet they crash landed on after Istavaan, so be it.

As long as that narrative is there in some form, they could be fighting Ewoks for all I care.

Well I see your missing Legion and raise you "Grimlok is a Primarch"! He was purged for bad verbal communication skills.

Why the bad reaction to big lizards? I mean, its not as if the Salamanders have never encountered them before.

I'm sure the old Inferno mag had a story where a Titan Legion got smashed because the local natives had GIANT beasts capable of toppling Warlords.

Because it feels like theres more and more filler books with less advancement of the general storyline ...

If it were an entirely one off book or part of any other series sure, I wouldn't buy it and wouldn't care. But this is a HH book here. You should never have to apply 'if you don't like it don't buy it' to a HH book, otherwise something has gone very, very wrong.

BL have updated their website, somewhat.

Bit of a WiP -- the navigate our ranges bit doesn't work for now/starts on the 24th of Feb.

Feedback requested via their FB page.

http://www.blacklibrary.com/Blog/A_glimpse_of_things_to_come.html

Hello!

Graeme here, your friendly neighbourhood commissioning editor. I’ve been asked by Adam, the almighty master of New@BL, to drop in and talk a little about what’s passing through Black Library Editorial at the moment.

Obviously many of our projects are shrouded in mystery, but I can hint at a few exciting things we have coming up. We’ve been in a commissioning frenzy of late, setting authors off on journeys across the depths of the Imperium and the length and breadth of the Old World.

In the grim darkness of the far future, Steve Parker is once again assembling a squad of humanity’s finest warriors, hand-picked from across many Space Marine Chapters, to hunt the alien enemies of mankind through the darkness in 2015. To see similar heroes of the Imperium in action, check out Steve’s novel Deathwatch or the short story anthology Deathwatch: Xenos Hunters.

Ten thousand years earlier, forces are gathering, each shepherded by their primarch… er, author… as battle lines are drawn. Nick Kyme, Chris Wraight, David Annandale, Guy Haley and Rob Sanders will all declare their allegiances on an eventful day in May. If you want to see more of their work during the Horus Heresy, pick up Mark of Calth and the audio drama Censure, both set during the war on Calth, or Chris’s latest novel, Scars.

As well as taking part in Horus’s rebellion, Rob Sanders is also returning to the Warhammer World to continue the tale of the foremost lord of Chaos in that realm as he continues his path towards damnation (Archaon, that is, not Rob). Watch out for this in 2015, and if you want to read the first part of the tale of the Lord of the End Times, you’ll be able to get the aptly titled Archaon: Everchosen at Black Library Live on the 1st of March. But hurry, because we’re down to the last few tickets.

Now that I’ve said my piece, I’ll return to the Commissioning Cave and the fantastic novel manuscript I’m reading. I can’t tell you about this one, but believe me, it’ll knock your socks off.

Later!

Graeme, Keeper of Secrets

.BL : Live ! is months end, hopefully with the site up and running by then we'll get a better idea of what is coming.

Really hoping we finally get Rob Sanders' "Cybernetica" -- novella continuing the events on Mars.

So one would assume some time in the next 2-3 months.

For the physical release anyway, guess there's a chance it might be on download prior to that.

http://www.blacklibrary.com/Blog/lj-goulding-pours-his-heart-out.html

L J Goulding pours his heart out

Hey folks,

Today, L J Goulding gives a little insight into how he really feels about one of Warhammer 40,000’s most infamous heroes:
“So, Mortarion’s Heart is here. I know that a lot of you have been looking forward to this one. Mostly, this seems to be because you love the Grey Knights, the Death Guard or Mortarion himself, but plenty more of you apparently can’t wait to find out what the story behind the Codex background text might actually be. Believe me, if I hadn’t been the one to write it, I’d be feeling exactly the same as you right now. Either way, this is going to be one to remember.

As I’ve said before, Kaldor Draigo is larger than life. He’s got a legend built up around him, a kind of mystique that borders on dark celebrity, both in the Warhammer 40,000 universe and as a gaming character on the tabletop. Whether you believe that legend in a literal, word-for-word sense is between you and whatever dice-gods you venerate, and if that means you enjoy your games a little more as a result then that’s just awesome.

Personally, I don’t believe it for a second. I’m a ‘Draigo denier’, if you like – as inspiring as the image is, I don’t believe that a single warrior (short of the Emperor himself) could fight his way through an army of daemonic champions, single handed, then beat a battle-fresh primarch into submission in a fair fight, and finally give him a proverbial slap on his bony rump to send him crying home to Papa Nurgle.

And guess what? That’s not what happened at all. Oh, you agree with me? Excellent. I think we’re going to get along just fine. I’m not going to spoil the audio drama for you, but this isn’t a tall tale about a Space Marine somehow managing to beat a daemon prince in single combat. It’s not about making the Deathshroud into cannon fodder. It’s not about the size, disposition or relevance of Mortarion’s internal organs. You have to look beyond the legend, if you want to find the story.

Heck, this audio drama is not even really about Kaldor Draigo, when you boil it right down. He was just the wrong man in the right place when the eye of destiny fell upon Kornovin. The moment I realised that, the script practically leapt onto the page for me.

Whether or not you’ve already read Kaldor Draigo: Knight of Titan, you might enjoy it even more once you’ve listened to Mortarion’s Heart (and read the CD inlay material!) and vice versa. And do you want to know where Draigo’s destiny is actually taking him in the future? My gods, you’re in for a treat…”

Thanks Laurie!

Mortarion’s Heart is available to order as a CD or you can download the MP3 right now.

We’ve had quite a few requests lately for more details on the release date for the Horus Heresy Weekender tickets. So here’s a little bit of a scoop…

The Horus Heresy Weekender tickets will be on sale for the first time at Black Library Live on Saturday March 1st.

They will then be available from blacklibrary.com and forgeworld.co.uk from Monday 3rd March.

Not long to wait now!

– Adam

No, they don't, which is seriously annoying. The closest they've come is publishing the scripts of a very few, but if you don't like audio books, and I don't, they're always too slow, why would you want the script?

Real books printed on paper, and the right size too please, none of this large print trade paperback rubbish.

Just looking at the amount of releases on the website, the number of little ebooks, audio books, re-releases; it is a little over-whelming! I realise I have lost touch a little, wonder if there is a webpage or blog somewhere that has a synopsis of some of these, non-novel stories..

I suspect its frustration borne of the strong desire of many readers, myself included, for them to stop fannying about and get the feth on with telling the fething story. I'm all for exploring the lesser known aspect of the Heresy, but how about advancing the story just a tiny bit?

I totally get that. It's why I stopped reading the Horus Heresy books. I figure I'll tune in when it's done (if ever) or anything particularly amazing catches my attention, but because I'm not tuned in I tend to miss quite a fair bit of what's happening and where we are up to. Seems like there's still a fair amount of slow progress (or even re-visiting) going on. That dinosaur book is set in the Istvaan system right? Madness. Speaking of being out of the loop, have there been any Iron Hands HH novels at all?

Not in a limelight sense.

They have a fairly strong presence as the "opposition" in Angel Exterminatus, but they haven't really got their own book yet.

Off the top of my head, only them, the Fists, Night Lords and The Death Guard who haven't had a book focusing specifically on them either printed or announced yet, so it has to be coming.

I suspect its frustration borne of the strong desire of many readers, myself included, for them to stop fannying about and get the feth on with telling the fething story. I'm all for exploring the lesser known aspect of the Heresy, but how about advancing the story just a tiny bit?

You mean like Unremembered Empire sorting out a bunch of the wayward primarchs and getting them in one place for the next step? Or Scars telling us what actually happened to the White Scars before Terra, and showing what the Wolves were up to post Prospero?

Well, I am resolutely sticking to the MMPB format, as I'm unwilling to reward what I see as money grab behaviour with my money. So I've yet to read either of those. But as the events in Unremembered Empire seem to have been fabricated solely to write a book about them, and books detailing what legions and characters were doing while they weren't involved directly in the events of the Heresy don't really move the story of the Heresy forward, no, I don't mean those.

So, you weren't actually confused then?!?

If it were a space marine battle book I'd agree there and say sure, it's even a cool throwback to the stupid, tongue in cheek over the top sillyness days of 40k.

But it's not.

It's the HH series. They are trying to tell a serious story there, this is dumb filler.

Also what else has Annandale done? I don't think I've even heard of him before, let alone consider him up there with Abbnett or Dembowski(sp?) ?

Spoiler:
(One of?) The first Garro Audiodramas sees him assembling a team drawn from multiple legions. A precursor to the idea of the Deathwatch in some respects but more likely than not the first Grey Knights. They go to Isstvaan and find a somewhat crazy Loken and after that I do believe Loken continues to be a character in the Garro audiodramas.

I'm tempted, obviously.

But the e-shorts are usually depressingly...short.

Plus, with all the goofing around in the 'advertising' for it ("Alpharius is back, or is he?!?"), well, it doesn't inspire confidence.

Nor does BL's handling of the Legion after Abnett.

And:

"Incidentally, Chris will be at Black Library Live, along with Alpharius, or not. Although they’ve never been seen in the same room at the same time… Is Chris Wraight Alpharius? He could be. When I asked him about this he replied: “I can’t say.”"

I'm can absolutely say that Chris is not Alpharius.

You're going to get some, if not all, of the cover art from the HH books, but that will account for a very small percentage of the artwork, which will continue to be the appalling cards and the horrendous mad scribblings of Blanche, including my all-time favorite of a Marine with no midsection at all.

The original Collected Visions was a huge disappointment for me, so I won't be wasting any money on the new one. Now, can I track down any last copies of that Jes Goodwin collection...?

well the upcoming Vengeful Spirit deals with an important event details in a previous published item so sounds right up your alley.

Seems to me that some HH readers just want BL to rush to the battle of terra simply telling in fiction the story we already know. BL however wants to take us into "uncharted territory" as it where and show us some genuinely new things, etc.

And that's something I heartily endorse, but I feel they've crossed, or at least flirted with, the line between expanding on what went before and milking an enthusiastic customer base in a pretty cynical way. HH books, in MMPB at least, are about the only thing I still buy unthinkingly from BL (as opposed to 18 months-2 years ago, where it was nearly all the books I consumed) but my enthusiasm has been dented by the long wait between books thanks the the HB transition, and the books where my knowledge of the events of the Horus Heresy is no greater by the last page than it was on the first.

Don't get me wrong, I am very keen to see more of the 30K universe, but I think it is a balancing act that BL haven't got right 100% of the time.

Hey folks,

Every year at Black Library Live, we showcase some of the best new artwork from upcoming titles and this year is no exception.

To give you a taste of what to expect, here is a preview of just one new piece of Horus Heresy artwork from artist Neil Roberts.

Those of you joining us in Warhammer World a week on Saturday will be able to see the whole piece in all its glory.

We like this piece of art so much we’ve even used it on the Horus Heresy Weekender ticket which will be on sale first at next weekend’s event, along with tickets for the Black Library Weekender III and next year’s Black Library Live:

All three tickets will be on general release on Monday 3rd March.

Looks like everyone's favourite doubt ridden IF champion to me ...

It is set in the 'now', it involves the Inquisition, it definitely is NOT Alpharius, it has the whole 'wheels turning within wheels' shtick and it is very short, uneventful and boring.

BL continue to revamp their site.

Amongst the latest changes

http://www.blacklibrary.com/our-ranges.html

only 2 ranges done so far, but they're now listed in a suggested chronological order.

and

http://www.blacklibrary.com/new-at-bl/first-look-wolves-of-fenris.html

So this arrived today:

This collection of Space Wolf stories by Chris Wraight will be available for the first time at Black Library Live! this coming Saturday, and shortly after exclusively here on bl.com (Friday 4th of April if memory serves).

On the subject of Black Library Live!, our seminal event is celebrating its 5th birthday this year. To commemorate the occasion, we’ve asked some of the authors who’ll be in attendance this weekend, to look back over the last five years and tell us about their favourite scene or story that they have written.

Today, the Great Wolf himself, Chris Wraight, shares his thoughts:

“Choosing a favourite from the last five years is a bit like choosing a favourite out of everything I've written, since I haven't been going that long. And it also feels a bit presumptuous, like saying 'this bit's really good' (with the corollary, perhaps, that the rest of it isn't).

However, as I remember ruminating about in the preface to the mighty Swords of the Emperor anthology, you do think back on some stories more fondly than others. Some were easy to write, a joy to get down on the page, whereas others were like pulling teeth. In general, though it's not a hard and fast rule, I've found that the books I enjoyed writing the most are the ones that people seem to have enjoyed reading the most, so there looks like being some kind of link between the pleasures of production and consumption.

Anyhow, in trying to drawn up a shortlist, the scenes that leap to mind are the second meeting of Schwarzhelm and Helborg in Sword of Vengeance, the bit where Bjorn turns up in Battle of the Fang, and the short stories Rebirth and Flesh. However, given that I'm still heady with the excitement of writing a Horus Heresy novel, I'm going to nominate the scene from Scars where four (count 'em!) primarchs settle down on Ullanor to have a chat about the state of the universe. It's always great writing about the primarchs, and to have so many of them clustered together at such a pivotal moment in the Imperium's history was enormous fun. It might be obvious from that passage which, out of all of them, is my favourite, but in case it isn't, I'll keep that to myself.”

Pop back tomorrow to find out which story Nick Kyme most enjoyed writing over the last five years. Controversially, it didn’t feature Salamanders…

– Adam, Wolf Pup.

pic below.

Whilst I'm happy to read more wolf stuff from Mr Wraight one does wonder how many of these will simply be reprints...

.. and I am not a fan of the cover either.

I think I'd be flat on my ass if I had two or three 32oz Dragon's Milk. That stuff is the closest thing in actual reality to drinking Mjod. I think its like, 10% ABV and thick as hell.

As a huge wolves fanboy, I really like the resin shield and whole package, but I'm not conviced I can shell out the money for this thing. Price is a touch too steep for me.

Couple of new/forthcoming pieces of art showed off at BL Live

The SW/AL one is, I think, for an audio book, detailing the further comic capers a'twixt the sons of Russ and the Alpha Legion, one suspects during their face off in space post Prospero.

.. The Crimson Fist one.... appears to me to be a scene from the battle at Phall .... maybe a rerelease or extension of that tale in some form or other ..?

Wasn't a lot of info forthcoming but we did get hints about :

-Gods of Mars -- 3rd in the Ad. mech series.
- The Crimson King -- 1k sons post Prospero novel
- The Swords of Calth (next Uriel Ventris novel)

The Hunt for Magnus -- prequel to Battle of the Fang

Templar (audio drama about Sigismund)
- Child of Night (Night Lords, something to do with their Chief Librarian, unsure of the format) -- these 2 by Mr French who also has his 2nd Ahriman novel out as well.

Ravenlord -- continuing Corax's "shadow war" out on the fringes. It would seem that, as this progresses and the realisation that he/they cannot stop Horus from reaching Terra and as they uncover further evidence of exactly how far the traitors have fallen... well.. things will get dark.

Corax is also gathering up the scattered remnants not only from his legion but from a few other garrisons/similar ....

Mr. Thorpe would like to do a series focusing on each of the Phoenix Lords , and a few other authors have said they'd also be interested in maybe contributing -- if time can be found.

His Time of Legend book relating to Josef Bugman sounds quite promising too and might also lead to some further tales.

.

I WAS THERE THE DAY HORUS APPEARED WITH THE EMPEROR IN A FREE EBOOK

‘I was there the day Horus appeared with the Emperor in a free eBook’

Everyone knows that free food tastes better, and the same is true of eBooks. Okay, so maybe that comparison breaks down under closer examination, but it’s always nice to get something for free, right?

Hop across to iBooks this week and you’ll find the Horus Heresy eBook 'The Wolf of Ash and Fire' available to download for free! Not only that, but to celebrate this, 'The Wolf of Ash and Fire' is Book of the Week on the UK iBooks Store (and deservedly so).

bout the Book:
This is a prequel to the Horus Heresy series, set on the world of Gorro before the events of Horus Rising, and is written by our most prolific Horus Heresy author, Graham McNeill.

If you’ve not read any of our Horus Heresy series yet (seriously, where have you been?) it serves as a great introduction to the setting, and if you’re a die-hard Horus Heresy fan, it’s something to keep you going during the wait for Vengeful Spirit, coming this May.

We know not all of you have access to iBooks devices, so if you don’t, you can instead download the free eBook here:

EPUB
MOBI

You can browse our full selection of Horus Heresy stories, including over two dozen novels and loads of Quick Reads, on the Horus Heresy Series Page.

Speaking of the Horus Heresy...
the beautiful sourcebook Visions of Heresy will soon be shipping out to those of you who have ordered a copy. If you’ve not seen this yet, it’s well worth checking out. This beautiful tome collects together a stunning array of Horus Heresy art from over a decade of work. It also gives an overview of the entire Horus Heresy, penned by Alan Merrett.

Still speaking of the Horus Heresy...
Tickets for this year’s Horus Heresy Weekender went on sale and are selling fast. Half are already gone, so if you want to join us this May, pick up your ticket now.

That’s all for today. Make sure you check back tomorrow when we’ll be hearing from author Graham McNeill on his new novella, Knights of the Imperium.

Thanks for reading.

Recently, in a BL advertisement, I saw a really cool new pic of the Alpha Legion marching to war all 'proper' like, but I can't find it in its 'uncluttered' version.

It must be the cover of their upcoming book - but I'd love to see it in a better, bigger, clearer version.

Anyone else have it?

ENTER THE DARK CITY OF COMMORRAGH

Greetings, kabalites, and welcome to the Dark City.

This weekend sees the release of the final instalment in Andy Chambers’s Dark Eldar trilogy. Path of the Archon follows on from the events of the first two books, Path of the Renegade and Path of the Incubus, and plunges us right back into the dark and labyrinthine world of treachery, murder and betrayal that is the dark eldar city of Commorragh.

To celebrate the release of the final volume, we’ve collected the full series together into one great value eBundle. This contains the full trilogy in eBook formats as well as a trio of accompanying short stories and the eldar harlequins novella The Masque of Vyle, which features an important character from the trilogy.

This eBundle is available to download today (meaning that you get to read the final book a few days early). Path of the Archon will be available for general download on Friday.

Here’s a quick extract to whet your appetite:

‘The supreme overlord calls for the lord Sythrac and the lady Malys.’

His words were greeted with a frosty silence. The two so named exchanged a calculating look before striding confidently into the scrying chamber. Behind them the remaining Archons were left to contemplate one another and reassess their potential standings in the supreme overlord’s eyes.

AN EXTRACT FROM PATH OF THE ARCHON:
‘So the faithful hound has returned just in time to heed his master’s call,’ Malys observed slyly as the doors swung shut behind them.

‘It only remains to be seen why the master calls for his bitch at the same moment,’ Sythrac shot back. Lady Malys smiled thinly at his crude response. In truth Vect’s desire for her had waned all too quickly. Malys’s quick wit and cunning mind – attributes the supreme overlord had once found so highly attractive – seemed only to irritate him now. Finding herself paired with Vect’s puppet kabal-master was a novel and not entirely reassuring development.

‘It was fortuitous that you escaped the moment of Dysjunction, Valossian, it was quite the most terrible I’ve witnessed at its height. How is it that you always have the good fortune to be away at just the right moment?’

Sythrac paused and looked her full in the face before answering. Malys was renowned as an astonishing, indeed bewitching, beauty even by the extreme aesthetics of High Commorrite society. Unsurprisingly Valossian Sythrac seemed entirely unmoved by the sight of her. He knew that the beautiful face was merely a mask over a cold, intricate intellect of cogs and gears. Her comradely observation was just a probe, a reconnaissance-by-fire to reveal weakness or self-doubt on his part. It was easy to rebuff as he had none to be revealed.

‘The webway was riven and the portals failed as soon as the Dysjunction occurred,’ Sythrac said flatly. ‘Finding my way back was… challenging. Had I delayed leaving the Sable Marches by even an hour I would have been completely trapped there. So tell me, Aurelia, if I knew what was about to occur why would I go hunting in some backwater and risk not being able to come back at all? Now, assuming that your pointless curiosity has been satisfied, I, for one, do not wish to keep our supreme overlord waiting any longer.’

Malys smiled radiantly and nodded indulgently to him as if to imply that their brief dalliance had been at Sythrac’s own behest. He paid her no heed and stalked away with the dangerous poise of a hunting cat. The scrying chamber was circular in plan. Its faceted walls rose high overhead until they came together into a central point lost in shadows. The floor of the chamber was almost entirely occupied by concentric rings of tall, irregular crystals, each flattened and polished on their inward-pointing face. At the centre of it all they found Vect poised like a spider in the middle of its web.’

MORE DARK ELDAR FICTION ON THE WAY SOON
Dark eldar fans will be pleased to learn that there’s more fiction on the way exploring this twisted and vicious race, this time penned by author Guy Haley. Guy’s new book will also feature their more restrained craftworlder kin. We caught up with Guy to ask him about taking up the mantle of chronicler of the eldar race. He had this to say:

GUY: I enjoy the eldar background greatly - it's a link between the present of the Warhammer 40,000 universe, the near-ish past, and the deep, deep past of millions of years ago, when the necrons and Old Ones were at war and Chaos was unleashed for the first time. I love poring over Codexes and supplements looking for little hints as to how the universe as-is came to be, and the eldar material is particularly rich in this regard.

Then there's that deep sense of melancholy and doom that the race is infused with - it appeals to my sub-goth rubbish poet side. Ordinarily I'm more orky, but I do have hidden depths, man, really. The hope of a resurgence of the eldar race, and the idea that maybe, just maybe, together the eldar and humanity can defeat Chaos for once and for all, only makes the misery more deliciously piquant. (And even if they do, what about all those tyranids and death robots? But one foe at a time, I suppose.)

Capturing all that in a novel about non-humans is very satisfying. The trick with writing any non-human race is to make them human enough to empathise with, but not so human that they cease to be alien. This is pretty difficult. All aliens/monsters/fantasy races we conceive of are born of the human mind. In order to make something "alien" we exaggerate certain human characteristics, and so really most aliens represent a narrow expression of part of the human experience. Such a genesis can make for one-note individuals within that race.

You have to stay true to the archetype, while broadening it enough to make compelling characters. Again, if you broaden too far, you just end up with Homo Sapiens people, and not eldar people (in this case). Trying to hit the right balance is technically rewarding, in a writerly sense.

With my new novel, I was very lucky in that I could look at several factions of the eldar - the dark kin, harlequins and two craftworlds - and examine the frictions between them all, the similarities, differences and conflicting agendas. I came to the conclusion that once you look beneath the surface there are differences where you'd expect similarities, and vice versa, between the eldar sub-groups.

And Yriel! I got to write about Prince Yriel, one of my all-time favourite Warhammer 40,000 characters. (I had an Eldritch Raiders army in the 1980s, you know).

Thanks Guy. We’re looking forward to the new book.

Well, that’s all for today. Keep checking New@BL each day for more news on new releases and author interviews. Thanks for reading.

- Eddie, Path of the Reader

I did a forum search for Yarrick : Imperial Creed and found no mention of it. Its not listed on the Black Library site either.

It is however reviewed in the latest copy of SFX magazine with a release date of April and a price of £20.00 (HB)/ £11.99(e Book).

Its by David Annandale and features a Yarrick cover where he has TWO arms!!

The review states its set earlier in Yarrick's career and has him going up against Chaos Daemons.

SFX rating 4 1/2 out of 5.

@Brook: At the price they charge, I'd call them to complain. If they want to pay for you to ship it back to them for a replacement, that would be fair (or just use the industry standard of ripping off the cover) to get the new hopefully non-splotchy one.

NEW TAU SERIES COMING SOON - AN INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR

Hey readers,

Today’s new @BL brings you news from the Tau Empire: a new series of novels based on one of the empire’s most notorious commanders.

Author Phil Kelly has just begun work on a new series for Black Library, based on the origins of the renegade Tau Commander Farsight.

Farsight is one of the most iconic figures in Tau History. Seen as a hero by many, but also as a traitor by the etherial heirachy of the Tau Empire, Farsight is a divisive individual for the Tau Empire. Though some love and some hate him, none can deny he is a superfluous commander, with a long history of brilliant victories against the enemies of the Tau Empire.

Phil Kelly is no stranger to the Tau Empire. Phil was one of four authors who contributed to the recent Damocles book, and his story focused heavily on another progeny of the fabled Puretide – Commander Shadowsun.

Phil was also responsible for much of the background in the recent Farsight Enclaves supplement for Codex: Tau Empire.

We caught up with Phil to find out what we should expect from this new series.

Eddie: What made you want to write a Farsight series for Black Library?

Phil - Ever since I helped out on the first Tau codex back in 2000 (which seemed a very futuristic year at the time), I have loved the notion that this bright new empire had unseen depths. The story of Farsight in particular seemed like a great way to not only show the Tau empire at its finest, but also the strange truths that led to the commander’s rebellion. His hero-turned-villain journey has more than one perspective to it. He is a genuine hero, but despite his genius for war he has his own flaws and obsessions, which lead to a story full of conflict. Plus, battlesuits are cool.

You also wrote much of the background for the Farsight supplement for Codex: Tau Empire. How will you approach the same story differently now that it’s a full fiction series?

Codex supplements are by their very nature an overview. When I was writing that supplement I thought ‘there’s so much more to tell here’ and I wanted a chance to really delve into those stories. For one thing, I’m really enjoying developing the characters from Farsight’s story into fully fledged personalities. The Farsight supplement covers a lot of wars, personalities and conflicts – though the events of the series will use them as a basis, they will also most definitely cover new ground.

Were there any aspects of Farsight’s story you were particularly looking forward to covering in more detail?

I’m looking forward to writing about the races of the 41st Millennium from a different perspective – though they might seem as familiar as old friends to us, they can be seen anew through the Tau’s eyes. The Orks make for great bad guys, a real contrast to the Tau, though in many ways the greenskins are the least of the tau empire’s emergent troubles. The idea of heroism, intelligence and technology being matched against decrepit empires and ancient evils is very exciting for me.

Commander Farsight is accompanied by seven loyal bodyguards. Will we see much of them in the books?

Absolutely. Though they do not all crop up at once – and some meet truly terrible fates – there are a few that fight by Farsight’s side right from the start, and develop alongside him. I like the idea that they grow and evolve from simple beginnings to a group of the finest warriors in the empire (with their own specialities and abilities to boot).

My favourite warrior of the Eight is Commander Brightsword (because he has a sword made of fusion that can cut tanks in half!), who’s yours?

I’m really enjoying writing Ob’lotai, a Tau Broadside specialist who is as solid as a rock and – though at first he does not care much for drones – ends up becoming an artificial intelligence of ever-escalating power. A true ghost in the machine!

Thanks Phil.

You can look forward to Phil’s Farsight series appearing soon.

In the meantime, why not catch up on Phil’s other Tau Fiction in Damocles?

Thanks for reading,

- Eddie, Kor,La

I don't think this

'none can deny he is a superfluous commander'

means what BL think it means........

LOL, I was just going to point that out myself. Maybe they mean superfluous because the Farsight enclaves can ally with regular tau (plus the mandatory radical inquisitor) for maximum cheese? With the closer relationship between GW/FW/BL (one communications portal to rule them all!), gameplay might be creeping into fluff instead of the other way around (which has largely been abandoned this edition).

No précis given for this one as of yet.

Sigismund, First Captain of the Imperial Fists features in this Horus Heresy audio drama

Sigismund, First Captain of the Imperial Fists, is swordsman whose skill with a blade is renowned throughout the Imperium. Once a peerless duellist and champion of Rogal Dorn, he has of late earned his primarch’s ire and seeks to atone. With treacherous Word Bearers abandoned by their brethren upon a comet-shrine within the Solar System itself, Sigismund calls his warriors to arms – such heretics cannot be allowed to remain upon the doorstep of holy Terra, while the Heresy rages across the galaxy...

Ravenlord is another novella -- follows on from Soulforge -- which will also be placed on general sale soon.

YARRICK IMPERIAL CREED – AN INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR

Hey Readers,
In today’s New@BL we catch up with one of the rising stars of Black Library, author David Annandale, to find out about his new novel Imperial Creed.

David is has been writing for Black Library for a while now, and his works include a Space Marine Battles novel on the deadly Black Dragons as well as numerous short stories including Evil Eye, The Dark Hollows of Memory and The Judges, in their Hunger. Last February saw the release of Yarrick: Chains of Golgotha, a story that in which the noble Commissar Yarrick is held captive by his arch-nemesis in an Ork gulag. David’s new book also focuses on Yarrick, but rather than portraying the hero of Hades Hive, this novel joins a young commissar at the beginning of what will prove to be a very eventful career.

Eddie – Hi David. Tell us about your new novel Yarrick: Imperial Creed.

David - Imperial Creed is the story of Yarrick’s first mission as a commissar. He is, of course, far from being a novice on the battlefield, but his new rank comes with a steep learning curve. The good news is that he has an excellent mentor in the person of Lord Commissar Simeon Rasp. The bad news, as Rasp points out, is that their mission with their deployment is on the planet Mistral, whose politics are such that the moment when you think you know what’s going on is the moment you are most fatally wrong. So this is the new commissar’s baptism of fire. He’s a long way from being the legend he will become, but the strength of character that will make him one is there, and he’s going to need it. The soldiers fighting alongside him will need his strength too, because what is at work on Mistral is even darker than Rasp suspects.

This adventure is also where seeds are planted for other events that will shape Yarrick’s life and shake the galaxy. Allies and enemies whose destinies will intersect in important ways with Yarrick’s step onto the stage, including one whom readers might recognize from The Death of Antagonis. The forces unleashed in the story convulse Mistral, but their consequences will extend all the way to Armageddon.

How does the character of Yarrick in Imperial Creed differ from the way he appears in your other book, Chains of Golgotha?

The Yarrick in Chains of Golgotha is a living legend, which is both a burden and source of great power. That Yarrick can command vast armies. This Yarrick is still learning what he must do, and what he must become, in order to serve the Imperium and the Emperor. The Yarrick of Imperial Creed still has both his arms and both his eyes, so there are many scars, physical and otherwise, that he has yet to acquire.

What was it that made you want to write about Yarrick in particular?

The first time I read the Imperium’s timeline in a 40K rulebook, I was struck by the entry about Ghazghkull Thraka releasing the captured Yarrick, and wondered what the story behind that was, never imagining that I would one day get to write it. So he has long been a character who has fascinated me. I love the mixture of the bigger-than-life and the very human that he represents. He becomes a figure who commands the respect of the Adeptus Astartes, but he is not genhanced. He doesn’t have superhuman powers. There is only that extraordinary will to see him through the most extraordinary challenges.

Also, though we know a lot about his career beginning with the Second War of Armageddon, the same is not true of his deeds as commissar before that. There is so much to explore, and so many tales to tell. Imperial Creed is just the start of a huge saga, and I hope readers will enjoy the ride.

You have your first full Horus Heresy novel on the way later this year. Could you give us a little teaser of what we can expect from that?

The Damnation of Pythos is a tale about the Shattered Legions. It picks up right after the end of my audio short Veritas Ferrum. In fact, I wrote that while in the early stages of the novel, as I wondered how this group of Iron Hands, Salamanders and Raven Guard made it from Isstvan V to the Pandorax system. So this is where they are now, brutalised by the massacre and hungry for revenge. Pythos is a death world, its native life monstrous. But there is something else here too, which could be the means for the Iron Hands’ vengeance. Or it could spell their doom.

Are you working on anything for Black Library at the moment?

I’ll be gearing up shortly for the next Yarrick book, which will be a new adventure, though will also continue the arc begun in Imperial Creed. I’m also working on several Yarrick short stories. Additionally, I’ve been doing some work with the Grey Knights, which I shall just tease about here. And I’m just beginning a project about another named character. But his name is one I can’t reveal just yet…

Thanks David, sounds like we’re keeping you busy.

You can pre-order Yarrick: Imperial Creed today, as both an eBook and hardback edition. While you’re at it, why not catch up on some of David’s other books:

Bought Yarrick at BL : Live and enjoyed it very much.

Some very nice moments in it indeed, quite macabre in places really.

and also in the future....

spoilered just in case...

Spoiler:

The final instalment of this SF trilogy

On the far fringes of the galaxy, Adeptus Mechanicus Magos Kotov’s great journey is over. He has achieved his goal – to find the resting place of the long-lost Magos Telok. But Telok isn’t dead… As the brave explorers of Kotov’s fleet marvel at the wonders Telok has to show them, darker plans unfold. As reality itself is threatened by impossible technologies, it may fall to a small group of Imperial soldiers and their eldar allies to thwart an insane plan and save not just the fleet, but the entire universe, from destruction

The "new" release schedule has almost brought my BL reading to 0. It took a couple of months to figure out I wasn't going to get a new HH paperback every 5 or so months like I expected. They showed up pretty neatly on breaks from work so I could knock them out over the weekend or long week. The last paper book I read was Betrayer in trade form. I wonder of GW knew the HH series was the last link many of my friends and I had to their ecosystem? Soon we won't be buying anything anymore.

EDIT: Derp, it's up on the BL site for preorder now. And I will be saying No Ta, because the gits have put the price up AGAIN. Tell me BL, leaving aside why your hardbacks should be £20 and exclusively available from you in the first place, why is this particular hardback suddenly worth an extra £5? Oh that's right, I forgot, you need the extra money for gold plated tiger-teeth&ivory back scratchers

I think it's a really solid anthology. The longest story in the anthology, Calth that was by McNeill is very good. Frenc's story from it, and Abnetts story are also both very good.

I suspect most were not NYT bestselling authors on their own names,

but rather on the fact that the were writing 40K stuff (as part of very frequent series releases giving buyers little change to get bored)

So, Black Library had found some authors who brought them money and popular success by working with the GW IP.

That's like saying that Peanut Butter alone is not as successful as Chocolate and Peanut Butter together. Therefore, no one will mind when Reese's takes their peanut butter cups off the market and replaces them with $20 Reese's Peanut Butter, Chocolate and Nougat Buckets (NT WT 0.5 oz).

Besides, my point was that plenty of publishing houses are successful with their own NYT Bestselling (or even not-bestselling!) authors in paperback. I haven't seen huge LE hardback novellas for most SF authors. Have you?

THE PLAGUES OF ORATH - NEW SPACE MARINE ARTWORK

Hey readers,
Today’s Digital Monday Quick Read is something a bit special. Plague Harvest, by Cavan Scott, is the first in a new trilogy of Space Marine Battles novellas set during the Plagues of Orath. On today’s New@BL, we take a look at what you can look forward to from the trilogy, and showcase the stunning new series artwork.

The Plagues of Orath
On a quiet little agri-world in the heart of Imperial space, an ancient evil awakens (it's always the quiet ones). A new trilogy of Space Marine Battles novellas will chronicle the war for Orath, as this once-peaceful planet is subjected to plagues that raise the dead to walk again, not to mention the less then gentle salvation that two Chapters of Space Marines provide.

The first instalment in the series is Plague Harvest. This first book follows the Ultramarines Librarian Vabion, working in an uneasy alliance with the Doom Eagles Chapter as they try to contain the plague that is sweeping Orath and also discover the source.

Bringing the battle to life
The artwork that provides the covers for all three instalments in the series was created by Kai Lim and it’s pretty awesome:

One of the coolest things about this piece is the fact that a lot of the Space Marines' newer units get Kai Lim’s impressive treatment. A lot of these don’t have any artwork outside of the Codex, so it’s great to see them in action in this piece. Take a look at this Centurion sergeant, surveying the battlefield with a thoroughly deserved sense of invulnerability while a Hunter tank provides anti-air support in the background.

Even the Tactical squad Space Marines look unstoppable - wading forwards with bullets ricocheting off their power armour and delivering bolter-based death to the enemies of man.

The Stormtalon gunships (which feature heavily in the first book, Plague Harvest) can also be seen here clearing the rubble-strewn skyline for their strafing run.

We can’t wait to see these guys in action in the series. Download the first novella now from our Quick Reads section.

Oh, and while we’re talking Quick Reads, next Monday’s new story will be a Horus Heresy title with ties to Graham McNeill's new novel Vengeful Spirit – one not to miss.

Thanks for reading,

- Eddie, Chapter Serf

To this end he's ( finally ) updating his website and the like with more info and "stuff", including a a little marine versus marine game.

I've said it many times before, the art of Centurions are awesome. The problem is that the legs on the moderl are both static and too short, and there's literally nothing on the back. The model would be great if you just couldn't see the astartes in the mech from the back.

Yes.

More or less.

The format they used to release the HH books ( and indeed most of their books in) is one that the publishing industry as a whole is moving away from.

The HH books get a hardback release, then X months later they get a tradepaperback release -- this is softback but somewhat larger than the original format, about the size of the that various Space Marine Battles series was/is in if that's any help to you.

Then the HH series -- and only the HH series -- get a release in the old style paperback known as the "legacy format" .

AT the moment they're going back through the rabge and releasing each book in the hardback format, with the tradepaperback format X ( it's normally 3-6 IIRC) months afterwards. So there will be a release of Mechanicum in this format but there is unlikely to ever be a reprint in the old/legacy format.

Hope that helps, sorry if this isn't quite what you wanted to hear.

Everyone with a good taste in literature of Counter, considering his characters have the depth and intrigue of a photocopied cardboard cutout. And going above and beyond the call of shoving the word "wolf" into a sentence more then ever thought possible.

I thought Angels of Darkness was very good, although perhaps that was as much about the book actually introducing something new, something which I think is just so difficult to do within the 40k universe - even though 'that line' was so massively divisive with fans!

Also he gets a big thumbs up for mentioning the Demiurg in 'Purging of Kallidus', even though the rest of the book was very much cookie-cutter Space Marines in BL.

You know, the Centurion looks pretty awesome in that artwork. I wish the models were posed as dynamically as that art.

Indeed. I think both of those models are pretty poor (and massively uninspired), but that's a great piece of art.

But they **had** to notice the bump in sales of the novels that isn't accounted for by the number of active rulebook/mini buyers. Maybe some of it could be explained away by random purchasers in BM stores; but not at the volumes they wee selling, and certainly not NYC Bestseller list volumes.

Funny, The "legacy format" is commonly know as mass-market paperback. The industry standard. LOL. Publishers have found the hardback format selling less and less well.

I got an email from BL that explained basically what you said, and in a nutshell told me to expect the mm paperback 6-8 months after the initial hardback release. Pretty sire I'll loose interest if I have to wait 8 months between novels. At lest they committed to releasing the whole series a paperback.

The time frame is thus...the hardback is released, then three months later the first, larger paperback is released ( the 'trade' paperback that's becoming more and more common), then another six months after that (so nine months after initial HB publication) the mass market paperback (or as GW term it the 'legacy' format) is published.

Go into the sci-fiend fantasy section of any major book store and you'll see the vast majority of books there are now in the trade format as opposed to MMPB. It really isn't a Black Library only thing.

It's only really become a common sight over the last few years, and what's most annoying is that it really screws the look of any collection up on your book shelves - my collection of Clive Cussler novels is 95% MMPB, but now they're all in this rather pointless Trade size - why didn't they just put prices up without making the books physically bigger?

My extensive collection of Black Library books is now all over the place, except for the HH novels.

The Emperor’s Scythes have yet to appear in many Black Library stories, but that will be remedied soon. In the meantime, if you want some insight into some of the origins of this mysterious chapter, you may find some clues in the recent Horus Heresy novel The Unremembered Empire.

subtle eh ? Guess there's a new book a'comin' about them then.

Vulkan Lives is in ( GW at least) stores now in the Legacy/same as the first 20 odd novels format.

Guy Haley has 2 new books out

http://www.blacklibrary.com/new-at-bl/Valedor-An-Interview.html

Hey Readers,

On Today's New@BL we catch up with author Guy Haley.

Guy's been very busy of late. His recent work has covered everything from tank battles in the 41st millennium to Space Wolf primarch-hunting packs, to the goblin tribes of the Worlds Edge Mountains.

His latest two books both deal with the brutal conflict in the Valedor System, waged between the tendrils of two tyranid hive fleets and a desperate alliance of eldar kindred.

Here's what Guy had to say about his new books:

Eddie - Tell us about your novel Valedor.

Guy - Valedor is the most exciting book you'll ever read! Well, okay. I hope it is exciting. I certainly found it exciting to write. The eldar background is among my favourite pieces of the Warhammer 40,000 mythos. Elegant, elegaic, full of doom and sorrow, it links all the eras of the game universe together – from the dim and distant wars between the Old Ones and Necrontyr, the rise of the Chaos gods, right up to the present. Best of all, there's a glimmer of hope to it, which I got to fully exploit.

Valedor is a war zone on a truly epic scale. What can we expect from the battles in the book?

Loads of different eldar factions uniting to battle two tyranid swarms! So there are a lot of tyranids battling all manner of eldar war machines and troops. In space, in the webway and, ultimately, on a planet that is literally falling apart. Who could ask for more?

The Last Days of Ector is another new book from you out this week, a prequel to Valedor. Tell us about that story.

At the time of the story, the Valedan system is held by the Imperium, but it was planetscaped originally by the eldar. It's a True Star, rather than a Maiden World system, so all the eldar there were wiped out by the birth of Slaanesh, leaving a bunch of lovely worlds ripe for colonisation. The Last Days of Ector is about one of these Imperial worlds, a chilly hive world, and how twenty members of the Crimson Castellans Space Marines save a portion of the population, with help from an unexpected source...

In the last year you've written stories from both the tau and eldar perspectives. How do you approach these two xenos races differently when portraying them?

I like xenos. There's an inherent challenge to non-human characters, as I often say - make them inhuman enough to be different, yet human enough to sympathise with. Obviously I'm a human (I'm not actually a goblin, really!) and it's hard to break out of the human mindset, but as long as you carefully follow the philosophies and temperaments of each, they develop in different ways - the chaps behind the background are awfully clever, after all. However, a complicating factor is finding enough character range within the archetype of each race. If you bear that in mind, it's not too hard.

I tend to see the tau and the eldar as at different ends of the same spectrum. They both have unshakeable self-belief in their superiority. They both have fantastic technology. The eldar's is considerably more advanced, of course, but they both at least understand their science. They both have caste systems (of a sort). But the eldar are melancholy and in danger of dying out, whereas the star of the tau has yet to reach its zenith.

What are you working on for Black Library at the moment?

Can I really say without the Inquistion mind wiping me or feeding me to Laurie Goulding's pet cave squig*? Yeah? Okay. I've got a lot on, to be honest. I'm doing a load of short stories, an increasing amount of material for the Horus Heresy, and have just taken over writing about the Black Templars, my first story about whom will be out soon-ish. There's more ork stuff coming. And there will be novels. And more fantasy stuff. And... [that's enough now, Haley - Ed].

Thanks Guy!
You can order both Valedor and The Last Days of Ector now in eBook and hardback formats.

Be sure to check back tomorrow when we'll be showcasing a new piece of Space Marines artwork on New@BL.
Thanks for reading.

- Eddie

*Fact of the Day:
Laurie raised his pet squig from a mushroom that he found growing in his shed.

Haven't read those yet --- finished Vulkan Lives and surging through "Commissar" by Andy Hoare -- which features Vostryans and is pretty cool so far -- but I intend to, I rate Mr Haley's books very highly.

In news that will shock no one.....

Make sure you check back on Saturday both on this site and iBooks to see what you can look forward to from Games Workshop Digital Editions on May 24th.

A new edition of our flagship game is always a big occasion and Black Library will be merrily joining in the celebrations as well.

Other info that might be of note :

from Mr Dembski-Bowden

I’m up to my throat in the delicious back and forth of Heresy planning, as Master of Mankind pounds its way towards its inevitable, eventual realisation. I had an early Skype call with Nick (of Clan Kyme) this very morning, throwing specifics at each other for… various projects… and there’s been a mountain of emails, text messages, and Facebook chatter between me, Laurie, and John French regarding the details of the Emperor, the Webway, and the girls and guys shedding blood in its webbish, wayish tunnels.

As for what I’m writing right now, it’s a cross between picking the nits off sections of The Lord Inquisitor: Prologue, and something non-Heresy-related that has the following words featuring pretty heavily: “Blackmane”, “Space”, “Wolves”, “Dark”, and last but not least, “Angels“.

Oh, and “Duel”.

Also, “Orks”

Oh and according to BL my new Ravenguard novella has been despatched so they should be arriving soon.

The gallery prints are neat, but it's readily apparent that they're covers to books meant to wrap around the back. All the action is on the right side and the left is where the back cover blurbs are supposed to go. Not necessarily a bad thing, just kind of obvious I think!

Personally, I'd rather see prints of work from Adrian Smith, John Blanche, or one of the other main GW artists, but this is still neat. More 40k/Fantasy art being available is only a good thing.

http://www.blacklibrary.com/new-at-bl/The-First-Champion.html

Friday 30th of May, 2014

HORUS HERESY - THE FIRST CHAMPION

Hi readers,
It’s an exciting day for fans of the Horus Heresy as a much anticipated character makes his battle début in a brand new audio drama by John French.

Templar focuses on the famed hero of the Imperial Fists, Sigismund, and sees the First Captain face-to-face with traitor Space Marines for the first time.
Here’s a short extract to give you a brief taste of the action, where our yellow-clad hero tests his blade against a battle brother from another Legion.

LISTEN TO AN EXTRACT NOW

Templar is available to download now as an MP3. This audio drama is currently exclusive to blacklibrary.com and is available a full six months before it will be released in stores as a CD.

That’s not the only new addition to the Heresy today. John French’s other VII Legion story, The Crimson Fist, is now available in a new hardback format to match the rest of your Horus Heresy Collector’s editions.

This novella was first printed in the anthology Shadows of Treachery.
For those of you who haven’t read it yet, the story describes a brutal naval engagement between sworn enemies the Iron Warriors and Imperial Fists.
It also introduces another Imperial Fist captain whose legacy will extend well beyond the events of the Horus Heresy, Alexis Polux – the eponymous Crimson Fist.

That’s all for today,
We’ll be back next week with more news, extracts and new releases.
Thanks for reading.

Heard quite good things about this audio drama, believe it's mainly told in flashback .

I picked this up at GenCon. Short book, but a good read. Dorn and Sigismund brood, and some stuff happens in space with the Imperial Fists and Iron Warriors.

None springs to mind, alas.

They did do this bundle

http://www.blacklibrary.com/warhammer-40000/tyranids-ebundle-2014.html

a short while ago but most , if not all , of them are old with the possible exception of some of the short stories.

http://www.blacklibrary.com/warhammer-40000/deathwatch-xenos-hunters.html

came out in Feb. this year

whilst
http://www.blacklibrary.com/warhammer-40000/deathwatch-2013.html

was from last year.

Did Dakka just delete the words of a Black Library bestselling author? What happened?

How far must BL have fallen. Remember when A Thousand Sons and Prospero Burns came out and BL authors had our respect, or even admiration? Now all they want to do is tell you why you shouldn't buy paperbacks any more.

I remember when the BL was about publishing stories and not collectors item. I don't blame the authors or editors really. Somewhere along the way, GW execs got a stranglehold of them.

Hi All - I fudged that first post. Apologies! : ) Take two. A bit of context - my name is Rob Sanders (*pleased to meet you*) and I'm a Horus Heresy, 40k and Fantasy author for Black Library - among other things. I'm a regular blogger and enjoy the forum conversation that results. I tend to include a good deal of original content relating to my BL fiction and Warhammer 40K in general. It's enjoyed in other places and I was wondering if it would be the same on Dakka Dakka. No hard feelings, if not! : D Recent examples include the comedy comic strip 'There is Only War' (http://rob-sanders.blogspot.co.uk/2014/05/there-is-only-war-comic-strip-short-my.html ), a Warhammer 40K Galaxy map... sort of (http://rob-sanders.blogspot.co.uk/2014/05/warhammer-40k-galaxy-map-sort-of.html) and 'Which Traitor Primarch Are You? Take the Test' (http://rob-sanders.blogspot.co.uk/2014/05/horus-heresy-weekender-and-which.html). I'd love to know which primarch you got - some turned out to be more popular than others and not necessarily the ones you would think! The post I fudged yesterday was the most recent entry - a Space Hulk strategy game based on one of my short stories (http://rob-sanders.blogspot.co.uk/2014/06/play-cleanse-and-burn-space-hulk_4154.html). Anyway, intro over. Glad to know you. : )

welcome to Dakka, Rob...

i've enjoyed your BL novels...
Legion of the Damned could have used more Legion of the Damned, though...
Atlas Infernal was pretty rockin', and i liked Redemption Corps, too...

i'm looking forward to reading Archaon...
i haven't got my hands on that one, yet...
i have a feeling it's going to be good...

cheers
jah

Welcome Mr. Sanders!

Also, I took the test and, I kid you now, I am Alpharius!

(Though admittedly I could kind of see where *some* of the questions were going with that one!)

Welcome to Dakka Rob. I quite enjoyed Redemption Corps.

@Thread

I'm thinking I might pick up Crimson Fist in it's novella. I think I have Shadows of Treachery somewhere but having the anything Iron Warrior in a seperate stand alone is better for me.

Also who's excited for another Garro audio!!!!!

Hey readers,

There’s good news for Horus Heresy fans today, as the first novel in the series is released for the first time as a fully unabridged audiobook and the full collection of paperback editions comes back into stock.

The Birth of Heresy

Horus Rising by Dan Abnett is the most popular Black Library book ever released – and with good reason as it’s totally awesome. The first Horus Heresy sets the scene for what has become our longest and most read series.

In the most recent Horus Heresy novel Vengeful Spirit we saw Horus at his apex, as master of the Traitor Legions. As the Warmaster begins to tighten the noose and his armies close in on Terra, what better time to look back at where it all began?

I was there…
Horus Rising has been an audiobook before, but previously in an abridged format. Since its first release we’ve had fans requesting a full and and unabridged version, and today those requests are answered.

Voiced by the talented Toby Longworth, Horus Rising clocks in at over 12 hours of audio. Here’s the opening few minutes to give you a sound bite of what to expect, including the Immortal line:

“I was there, the day Horus slew the Emperor…”

Listen to an extract:

Horus Rising is just one of dozens of books in our Horus Heresy audiobook series. Together they represent over 200 hours of audio. These audiobooks are perfect for long drives, or as background listening whilst painting an army of Citadel Miniatures. (What could be more appropriate?)

Paper is Back!
We also have some good news for fans of paperback books.

The Horus Heresy series has grown to be over two dozen novels long. We know that many of you who started reading at the beginning of the series are keen to complete your paperback collection, so we’ve re-printed every novel in the series to ensure you can get your hands on all of them.

The new prints all have a platinum blue sheen (following on from the gold of the first print run, and the silver and bronze of the second and third prints).

Check out the full range here to pick up any that you might have missed.

That’s all for this week.
Check back on Monday when we’ll be back with a new Quick Read and another week of news and new releases.
Thanks for reading,

- Eddie

Lush announcement in August? Am I cynical if I assume that means limited edition price gouging announcement? I'd rather mail ADB a cheque so that I don't have to reward BLs antics.

I'd like one of those two.

And some 'modern' Alpha Legion stuff that isn't in the 'mustache twirling' category.

With some more (OK, a lot more) of the ambiguity that Abnett brought in - maybe they really are "For the Emperor!"

Despite the books now being available in "normal" paperback I find myself quite underwhelmed to the point of "meh".

When BL moved to the more expensive format I stopped buying as I just didn't think almost adequate pulp fiction was worth spending more that $8 or $9 on. As a consequence I have no idea what is going on in the HH and cannot even be bothered to start finding out where I need to start especially as stories are only available in certain formats or not available at all.

What I then found is stopping reading regularly about the WH universe (both fantasy and 40k) has caused my interest in both those games to die off.

I cannot be the only one who this has happened to.

For me, it was the reverse... a dislike of 6th edition and the BL format switch over caused me to stop reading and buying (respectively) the novels. Just to catch you up, Horus is still rebelling but I still suspect the Imperium will win in the end. I'll still occasionally read (or more accurately skim till the last quarter) while reading coffee at books stores but I no longer buy the books like I used to. I'm behind on both my commissars unfortunately and frankly I miss those titles a bit more than the HH stuff that more frequently shows up in the book store many months after I read about it here in this thread. Over in the HH , you haven't missed too much other than

Spoiler:
More space battles that few people care about and the detailed stories of how Fulgrim and Angron became demon princes. Lionel, Guillieman, and Sanguinius decided to set up a backup Imperium just in case they lose over in the Realm of Ultramar with Sang as it's figurehead. Also, Vulkan lives! because he is an undying immortal.

I would like that too. Was there ever really a story that followed on from what happened in Legion?

The Legion has made some appearances after LEGION, but for me, they've been disappointing.

No one really picked up the baton from that novel and carried it forward.

Yes, I am biased, and yes, I would've LOVED for the Legion to have been the 'too clever by half' double agents, working to their own purposes, but really "For the Emperor!" (or 'humanity', if not "imperium").

And maybe they still are?

But...DELIVERANCE LOST and the few short stories since then haven't necessarily filled me with much hope in that regard.

Not to mention the full on 'baby to forehead stapling' that's been going on with the Legion in 'modern' 40K Fluff...

If there were a Legion that could be both baby-staplers and super-secret-squirrel loyal agents of the Imperium simultaneously, and be unaware of their own dual nature, it would be Alpha Legion.
