Hello there, I am Paul. I have been into wargaming and miniatures for some 24 years after getting hooked at the age of 8. That was all GW but in recent years I have moved onto different companies and games. The most recent change has been me selling my fantasy armies and moving into skirmish games. So recently I have moved onto Malifaux and was a backer of the Mantic games kickstarter for Deadzone, this is a blog of miniatures for those systems and maybe the odd different little model here and there. I would describe myself as an average table top standard painter, but this blog will see me trying to get better and maybe learn some new tricks.

Today saw me begin painting my first ever Malifaux miniatures. So some initial WIP shots of:

Mr Graves:

Kang from the Rail Crew:

and Lazarus (those mould lines have to go!):

I currently am just buying whatever Malifaux kits I fancy the look of, and have no real idea of which models go with which faction, all part of the fun of learning I guess.

Thanks for looking

Paul

Little movement on the painting front this week, but two big things have happened. Just 8 days ago we adopted 2 male cats from the Cats protection league, so please welcome in Alvin and Snowball (I will let you guess which cat is which)

in other news i got some new goodies delivered from Total Wargamer (whose issues mainly seem to stem around GW stock) in the form of a Deadzone Plague Support booster, and a plague monsters booster as well as a Dreadball terraton which I will be using in Deadzone.

But most importantly of all I have managed to finish my first two Malifaux miniatures in the form of Lazarus and Mr Graves:

As you can see I need to do a few minor touch ups here and there but they are basically done. Next up I plan to paint The Rail Crew and either get to work on my Plague boosters or start my Marauders.

So got my Plague monster/support boosters made last night, my favourite model of the bunch is the Plague Terraton:

i had to do a bit of work on what Kryten from Red dwarf would call his ""Groinal Attachment" given that it was missing from the box, by all accounts this is not an unusual problem.

I like the look of the Plague Mortar as well:

And some of my previously completed plague minis:

I know nothing about Malifaux, but I really like that Mr. Graves model. I always like looking at Deadzone stuff as well so I will probably be hanging around here some. Keep it up.

Cheers Squall, I know relatively little about Malifaux too and was only looking for something else to paint when my FLGS pointed out the range. I love the Wyrd/Malifux plastics, up there with the best in the market, I have no clue about the ins and outs of the game.

So a little progress today with my newly delivered Nexus Psi "1 click collection" . First up is the evil space Dwarf Mercenary "The Helfather". He has had a basecoat of boltgun metal followed by a drybrush of Hashut Copper. After a wash of Army Painter Quickshade Strong Tone ink had dried I added a verdigris effect with a wash of turqoise. I do not really know where I am going next with this one, but adore the miniature so will try and do my best.

I have also started the Zombie Terraton, the problem being I forgot how I painted my first batch of Plague . So I started with Mechrite red and then a drybrush of a flesh tone. I think I will deal with the bone pates next and then onto the Terraton armour.

I am keen to get my Marauder Hulk done too, he looks like a hard case but do not mind him, he is 'armless:

Finally i decided to paint my Space Psychic jellyfish the Chovar. I wanted to go a bit bright for this one, too garish maybe? Plenty of drybrushing and highlights to come for this one:

He is a metal mini and each of those 8 tentacles has to be individually glued on, so I cheated and glued 7 of them to the base to try and prevent them falling off. That is it for tonight, I am now off to paint but cannot seem to shake the feeling that I am being watched...

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2014/03/29 21:28:05

Post by: squall018

I don't have the Hell father yet, but I intend to pick him up. I find that on the verdigris, its best to go back with a light black wash to help subdue it and make it look more natural. That being said, I'm not the best painter in the world, but thats been my experience.

You plague scheme is sweet. I like that they look close to the stock scheme, but much grittier and less cartoony, which seems appropriate for a Deadzone.

Also, my dog watches me paint, so I know the feeling.

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2014/04/01 20:01:54

Post by: Thraxas Of Turai

Cheers Squall, i have completely nerfed the verdigris now. plague wise i wanted a really different scheme to the Mantic studio one, but they just ended up that way so I guess it was meant to be.

Anyway I have completed the Helfather and Chovar. I gave the Helfather a nice warlock purple scheme:

And rear shot:

And the Chovar:

Should have the Marauder Hulk and Plague Teraton done soon as well.

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2014/04/01 20:51:15

Post by: Chemical Cutthroat

I like where you went with the Helfather, the colors work really well. I certainly wasn't expecting the purple.

The Chovar looks good as well. Though I wouldn't be able to stop myself from painting it up like a Hanar from Mass Effect.

Nice work chief.

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2014/04/04 02:15:47

Post by: squall018

Well, you most certainly took the Hell Father in a whole other direction. That being said, I like it. Just not what I was expecting.

I think that was a smart idea with the chovar's tentacles. Its the only chance you have of not having to reglue his tentacles every time you play with him.

Oooh hoo, another deadzone friendly blog And I found it before it was a dozen pages in too! Excellent!

The purple Helfather gets my vote too, and that Chovar is looking nice.

Good plague scheme too, looking forward to more stuff

Thank you gentlemen, I have been a bit lax of late as my favourite band have been on tour and I have pretty much been on tour with them. But here is the task at hand:

My Malifaux "to do" box:

And Deadzone:

So about 70 minis to get done, and i want the DZ ones done before my 2nd survey KS delivery comes in june/july time.

And a touch more WIP on some Marauders:

I do not know if these fellas need a spot colourbut i will get them finished over easter weekend.

Thanks for looking.

They're looking pretty good! The hulk looks fine without more color though the ripper might not be opposed to it.

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2014/05/11 15:28:51

Post by: Thraxas Of Turai

Cheers Grim, it has been a while since I posted but I have made a fair bit of progress. I do not know why I was reluctant to start painting the Marauders but now that I have I am really enjoying painting them.

So my Hulk:

Rippers: (I was not a fan of the ammo belts so went without them):

Mawbeasts:

Pyro:

And the rest of the Marauders ready to go:

Finally I have also finished the Plague Terraton:

The bad news on the Deadzone front is i have had to dump my 2nd survey Kickstarter order of £200 due to a £5000 odd bill to replace the roof of my house, some things are just more important.

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2014/05/11 16:16:03

Yup, I had Forge fathers, Asterians, agizillion zombies and plastic peacekeepers on the way, scenery etc etc. A bit gutting really as I will have to reconsider my hobby budget for a good 6 months.

Glad to see that you are up and running painting again Grim.

I don't think I ever really *stop*, sometimes work and other things just catch up with me and slow things down more than usual

I really like that Hulk's face, the varying skin tones are cool.

I find the Mawbeasts to be dementedly fun models. Good paintjobs there chief.

I somehow missed your last post. The Marauders are great, but the plague tetraton is my favorite of this latest batch. Looks nice and infected, just like it should!

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2014/05/17 17:06:54

Post by: Thraxas Of Turai

Have done more Marauders, they do look better in the flesh, maybe sunny daylight photos do not suit my painting...but I am not very happy with these.

I am really enjoying painting them although the style is probably a bit too cartoony, but I guess I am stuck with it now.

Marauder captain

Goblin snipers

GunTrakk

Nice!

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2014/05/17 17:25:09

Post by: Chemical Cutthroat

I really dig the model for the Guntrakk, and the little no nonsense goblin piloting it.

I think the Captain and the goblins turned out really well, though the metals on the trakk seem a little thick, but that is probably just the curse of having so many large flat surfaces. Otherwise excellent job.

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2014/05/17 17:36:35

Post by: Thraxas Of Turai

Cheers CC, the metals are very thick. I daftly added layer after layer and just could not get it right, and removing some of the restic mould lines left a right mess that was hard to cover. But lesson learned, hopefully.

Constructive criticism like that is always welcome, I just seem to have hit my plateau as a painter but am trying to get better but feel like I am getting nowhere. I think thinning my paints may help (and certainly would have with the Guntrakk).

Am certainly going to continue with some normal Marauder Commandos this evening.

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2014/05/17 17:55:54

Post by: Chemical Cutthroat

Honestly its not so much a knock on your skill so much as the difficulty of the mini. Most large flat surfaces look good when they have something added to them, like freehand or weathering. That's why so many vehicles look really good all weathered up.

Your Malifaux models are wonderful, and you paint very well with the more organic shapes. The Chovar you painted is an excellent example of that, as there isn't a lot of 'bits' to the model, but you made the most of it and really added to it.

Thinning the paints will help a lot there, though you gotta be careful so they don't get 'drippy'. Looking forward for whatever else is on your table!

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2014/05/17 18:02:18

Post by: Thraxas Of Turai

No worries, I did not see it as a knock in any way. I have always aimed to be a tabletop painter, as long as it looks good from 3/4 feet away on the gaming table I have no real problem. I may continue with some Malifaux tonight, my Rail Crew are staring at me.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
So ended up doing a bit more painting tonight, got 2 Malifaux Rail Crew members done:

Kang:

Emberling:

And a group shot of my completed Deadzone figures to celebrate doing just over half my DZ collection:

Have completed Mei Feng for my Malifaux Rail crew, i like this miniature a lot.

Group shot:

Just three rail workers to go now and then I have completed my first Malifaux crew.

And I do not think i have showed any of my deadzone terrain so here are a couple of shots:

I think I have nicked the theme from Infinity, not to worry eh?

Color looks similar to my terrain before I maul it with dip . Looks good.

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2014/05/23 14:42:02

Post by: Chemical Cutthroat

Yeah, that Mei Feng model is excellent. I love the pose, and the paint scheme looks clean and well done.

I like how muted your Rail Crew is with the colors, and the rather bright light/dark contrasts that you work into the clothing.
The terrain looks good as well. I might pick up some of that...

Cheers gents.

@Chemical Cutthroat: I think that Grim will also attest that the battlezones are great kits for Sci-Fi wargaming, whatever game you play. They go together great, and can be assembled in an infinite number of ways at a great price. I glue mine rather than relying on the connectors for modularity though.

Here is the new "Ruins battlezone" due for pre-order soon:

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2014/05/23 17:54:26

Post by: Chemical Cutthroat

Yeah, that does look good. I bet it would make great 'prefab' looking buildings for an Ariadna table in Infinity. I like how they have the rebar/piping sticking out in the holes out sections fo the terrain.

I'd probably glue mine together as well. I prefer solid terrain, especially since I play with lots of large, heavy, metal miniatures. My Maghariba Guard haaaates papercraft terrain...

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2014/05/23 21:41:40

Post by: GrimDork

You can glue structures together and use clips to securely stack or otherwise connect them. Two buildings together, walkways to buildings, towers onto buildings, etc. I can see easily convincing myself to add one of the small - medium sets to an order from miniature market. At least once I run out of what I've already got.

I imagine that tag treats paper cargo containers like Mario handles goombas.

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2014/05/24 01:20:00

Post by: squall018

Not sure what the model is from, but I really like that emberling.

I like the cartoony look of your orks... I mean Marauders. I've always been a fan of GW take on the Orks, so that may be why I like the cartoony look.

Also, super stoked about that new ruined terrain. I think its the best looking set Mantic has put out.

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2014/05/24 04:19:01

Post by: Thraxas Of Turai

Agreed on the ruins, we have an event in Birmingham (UK) next saturday called the UK Board Games Expo, the missus has given me a little hobby fund to go with and visit the Mantic stand there. So hopefully I can get a look at the set in the flesh and also pick up some other terrain/DZ/Malifaux.

The Emberling is part of the Malifaux Rail Crew, each crew leader has a Master and that Master has what is known as a Totem. The Totem is either a magical representation of the Master's soul/magic/ambitions or a close associate. In this case the Emberling is (taken from the PullMyFinger Malifaux Wiki:

"Emberlings are minor fire elementals that inhabit the steam engines and furnaces of Malifaux. Mei Feng has a fondness for these little sprites and is often found with an Emberling trailing after her."

I was a bit dubious about the almost GW Red Era Marauders but I am happy to go full pelt with that scheme now.

So some definite progress when it comes to my first forays into the World of Malifaux, I have completed my first ever crew. 3 rail workers later and The Rail crew are done:

And group shot:

This in turn lead to me moving onto my next crew, The Guild's Judgement headed by this dangerous lady, I introduce:

Lady Justice

She is supported by:

The Judge:

I absolutely love this crew and it has been a joy to paint, so much so that I have completed the crew. So I end this update with a question, what is the image limit on each dakka post? Still to come we have the amazing Death Marshal models...

Automatically Appended Next Post:
This may be added to my previous post, it may not, who knows? But Death Marshals (with what many consider as fire painted the "wrong" way but my minis, my scheme :

Death Marshal: Codename Uncle Fester:

Death Marshal: Codename Froggy:

Death Marshal: Codename Wallenda:

And the finished crew:

today I have already started my Relic Hunters Crew and tomorrow temptation awaits at the UK Board Games Expo.

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2014/05/30 20:25:57

Post by: Chemical Cutthroat

Hell. Yes.

The Marshalls are great. I love the colors and everything. You did a good job with the coffins too. Are you saying they're painted 'wrong' because you did the fire in reverse? Yeah, eff that, paint them how you want, I think it looks cool.

I think the Executioner is my favorite. Wicked hat and a cool pose.

The one rail worker, the one with the drill arm. I gotta as what is up with is face? Seems sort of lacking there, is it the angle of the shot or something up with how it was shaded? Everything else looks good.

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2014/05/30 21:45:12

Post by: Thraxas Of Turai

Oooooph, have only just seen that picture and it does look very off, I think it is a combination of too much direct lighting and a bad angle maybe? the good thing for anyone doing a blog is that it does give you a chance to review your miniatures in a different way. May revisit his face tomorrow just to be sure though.

I agree on the (my mistake, it is The Judge and not the Executioner) CC, great pose and a great miniature. The Malifaux plastics are fast becoming my favourite on the market, but not always to put together due to fiddly/fragile parts. For example the new Killjoy has seen a lot of broken weapon chains:

Not my painting, but look at the thinness of that chain. Fine for display, not so good for gaming.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JHkNnoamNuc/U3hh5GdfNsI/AAAAAAAACTs/FRvNE-ebd3E/s1600/killjoy.jpg

Now onto more painting I have started on my relic hunter wastrels, basecoat and wash of Agrax earthshade.

The wood for the bases is rescued from the old GW Fellowship Of The Ring terrain, the stone pieces will feature on some more of my minis to come. Also you may also be able to tell that Doombull Brown is my new best friend and will be featuring on a lot of my Guild Malifaux models.

I just love the Victorian/ Steampunk/ future/ Gothic horror setting Grim.

I went to the UK Board Games Expo today and picked up a few thing.

The Deadzone Landing Pad, I was a little surprised by the retail packaging on this given that the original battlezone was a heavy set cardboard box and sleeve. I can see why they have done it though, a great way to reduce packaging costs for Mantic.

A couple of new Malifaux crews I picked up:

Rail Golem. Guild Arsenal Deck and the A5 Rulebook:

I will start with the Rail Golem tomorrow but for now here are the two sprues:

Adios.

So far so good with the basecoats. I agree that Malifaux has some great models. I'm less of a fan of the system itself, but I have picked up a couple of them here and there to paint up and maybe use in other games.

You aren't kidding about how thin they make some of their plastics. Check out the ninjas for the one faction, they have chains all over the place. I have the one relic hunter lady with the flaming staff that I need to paint up, and I always feel like I'm going to break her when I'm moving her around.

But its all excellent work with the plastics, so I just gotta be careful with them.

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2014/06/10 16:32:35

Post by: Thraxas Of Turai

Agreed on the system of play, after 5/6 read throughs of the rules I still have no real idea of what is going on. I will press on with it though.

Whilst going through my bits box the other day I found a number of sprues of these bad boys, so I am going to put them on bases and make some clumps of trees for Malifaux/Deadzone. For Deadzone I see them as the trees you get in shopping centres/malls to add a bit of natural colour to them.

Terrain wise I am also going to use some of the old LOTR Fellowship of the ring terrain to provide some cover for games. And, of course, I have to get started on the DZ Landing Pad.

Also on the subject of terrain has anybody worked on the Micro Art Studio HDF terrain? Looks exciting. http://shop.microartstudio.com/wwx-western-cottages-p-1009.html

I have also started on the Rail Golem, it is big piece of kit.

Scale shot next to a DZ Plague model and a Rail Crew member:

I am pretty sure that I can paint up the Golem in double quick time so Avance!

He looks decidedly stompy for sure.

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2014/06/11 00:28:41

Post by: squall018

Ummmmm, that rail golem would be terrifying... he is huge.

What did you end up doing with the Deadzone terrain? Did you make the landing pad or come up with something else?

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2014/06/11 06:23:05

Post by: Thraxas Of Turai

Stomp...stomp...stomp along comes the Rail Golem.

I am quite happy with him considering the time spent on him, I can see a few areas in need of a touch up but he will look great with the rest of the Rail Crew.

@Squall: Am going to start building the landing pad at the weekend.

For now I have been concentrating on other terrain, with the old LOTR walls:

Basically I do this, do a layer of sand on the base with pva glue,it is a more coarse mix than what I use to base my miniatures. I leave it to dry for 24 hours before adding another coat of watered down pva to seal the sand to the base.

A black spray undercoat is then drybrushed grey progressing to white. A small seraphim sepia wash is then added to complete the buildings, it is quick and easy.

And finally here is what I am doing with my Fake Plastic Trees (spot the Radiohead reference?)

In the coming days I plan to paint my Relic Hunters crew and get back on the Deadzone wagon.

Really like the golem! The scenery also looks good.

Whenever you field that Rail Golem, you just gotta quote lines from Major Payne.

"Choo...chooooooo..."

It looks good! And I like the bit of patina goin' on in the brass bits. A nice little touch that adds some color to something that would be otherwise rather two tone. I just noticed on my second look that the firery grate in the chest/stomach is a little hard to see, but it does have the reddish glow goin' on.

Good lookin' model chief.

Thank you very much everyone, I was pretty happy by the vedigris too and all it took was a watered down Hawk Turqoise wash.

Have played around with the landing pad over the weekend, if you copy the structure on the package it is a big piece of kit. However, I wanted it for Deadzone use rather than general sci-fi gaming so decided to make two structures out of it. The added variety given by the new sprues is excellent, I want to get my hand on the fortifications and ruins now too.

Structure 1:

Structure 2:

Also got some barricades out of it:

Overall a great set, I love the Deadzone terrain, it is cheaper and offers far more customisation opportunities than most other things out there on the market. If you play 40k or some other form of sci-fi game I recommend it heartily.

On the painting front expect some malifaux Relic Hunters progress soon.

Huh, other people make the neatest things out of the BZ tiles. Those are really cool structures ToT

I'm having a hell of a time getting myself out of the square buildings box, these shall hopefully serve as inspiration. I love the additional angles that the LP sprues add to the set, and who doesn't need a few barricades now and then!

Good work! Looking forward to more, still not sure how I feel personally about the Malifaux guys, but you always make them look nice

The new angles open up whole world of structures, I may go mad one day and get a load just to see what can be done.

My structures here involved no planning whatsoever and just came about organically with little thought really. The LP legs also open up a world of possibilities, I have not even scratched the possibilities yet.

Malifaux wise I can see why people would not like it, but the whole Steampunk/Gothic/Future horror does it for me. It reminds me of a a game I saw called Smog 1888, but the scale and resin prices put me off.

Deadzone wise I plan to have all my 1st shipment stuff painted before you lucky guys get wave 2 in 4-8 weeks odd.

Man... I'll be lucky if I get enforcers, marauders, and plague strike teams (not entire factions) done before then... Maybe rebs but I have two dioramas I'm building and a host of Infinity minis I really want to get to work on...

That's what it is.. steampunk. I don't dislike it out of principle... it's just more that I haven't seen it in a flavor that I like yet.

Ohman. Yes. Smog 1888 has those completely ridiculous figures that ooze (sometimes literally) more character than entire armies of other things.

I didn't realize there was a game for it, I just remember the completely amazing models (and the equally impressive paint jobs).

I first saw the Smog 1888 minis at Salute 2011, I may get some one day. The games seems like a pretty simple "beer and pretzels" type affair with cards rather than dice.

Have managed to get my Relic Hunters Crew painted, am happy with the results (though the pics make McCabe's face look a bit odd).

Wastrels:

McCabe's totem, the hound Luna:

Lucas McCabe:

McCabe Mounted:

Next up are the Ortega's and time to get my Deadzone mojo back.

I really like how you used the blue to tie em' all together. A nice little touch there.

That mounted model looks great, and has a lot of character to it.

But the Arab guy steals the show. He looks badass and intimidating as all hell. Excellent work man!

Achibal is pretty cool, huge too as the Mlifaux henchman tend to be. Have done a fair bit of terrain this weekend, mainly in the form of the old LOTR plastics mounted on plastic movement trays:

A Wastrel taking a stroll:

Group shot:

I was very sad at the death of Rik Mayall the other week, so a little tribute:

From the tv series Bottom. [Eddie has dressed up as the Grim Reaper to scare Richie]

Richie: Why don't we play Cluedo for my life?
Eddie: Because you always cheat! You always look at the mystery cards!
Richie: How do you know these things?
Eddie: I'm Death!
Richie: Sorry. [shouts] How do you know these things?
Eddie: No, I'm Death! I'm Death!

So here is Micro Arts Studio's Death from Discworld:

Have started on my Malifaux Latigo Posse:

Perdita:

Santiago:

Enslaved Nephilim:

Have also begun painted some Deadzone Plague models today, namely the swarm and some hounds. Have also begun this guy...

Adios.

Excellent work, as usual The way you have that terrain spread out on the glass table... There's something there... Maybe if they were scifi buildings with connecting walkways... it could be a space station or something, the glass is obviously not there so it's a fall to the death

I also like your version of "started a new gang" as it includes 3 finished models, whereas most people will have assembled the entire thing and painted it black, but then it sits there for eons before a lick of proper paint. I think you're doing it right

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2014/06/24 05:58:22

Post by: Thraxas Of Turai

Too true about the glass table, it is my new "invisible world" themed gaming table

Cheers Grim, but those models are not finished yet, they are just in the base coat and slap on a load of Aggrax Earthshade stage at the moment (basically the only way that I paint, and that has to change...probably ). Still highlighting and details to come. I have also tried a desert style base rather than my black/grey to white drybrush that is probably on my last 1000 odd miniatures. I just need to source some desert style foliage/grass for them for the full Wild West effect.

I have also decided to finish all of my Deadzone Plague models this week, it amounts to 12 models so not a lot of work. They are:

2 Stage 1A's
Plague Mortar Team (3 models)
2 Plague Hounds
1 HMG
1 Plague Swarm
2 Plague troopers
1 Plague Grenade Launcher.

Once they are done that will take me under 50 models in my possession that are not painted, I never thought that i would get to that stage.

Sweet, looking forward to an interpretation of the plague swarm, haven't seen too many painted. And the mortar team has long coats so that should be fun

Hmm... I must have checked those guys on a mobile device, they still look pretty darn solid

Well you sure are cranking away at them! I was actually doing really well with cutting into my To Do pile up until I ordered all those Heavy Gear models.

I really like the Death model. You did a nice job with the wood on the body of it. And the Banditos look cool too! The one guy with the blade-revolvers is pretty wild.

I nice little flurry of painting activity for me in the last few days.

First some Plague progress:

Plague mortar team:

Plague Hounds (2 previously done and 2 new)

Plague Swarm. Eurgh, not a fan of this model, there is just too much going on and too much muddies detail, the results are shown with a very sloppy and basic paintjob:

WIP on 4 Plague, they should be done soon:

So just these 4 to go and 2 Stage 1A's and my Plague are done, hooray!

I made a purchase on thursday of a Malifaux "No Shelter Here" Neverborn crew. They did not really add to the paint pile though as they are done already.

Master: Pandora (the photo makes the face look awful, in real life it looks fine, no idea why). She was undercoated black but her dress was painted white. This was then given a black wash, then a green wash and then it was done. I learned this technique from the Dakka log of Forlorn, go and check it out.

Candy:

Baby Kade:

Poltergeist. This model, and the Sorrows were an entirely white undercoat, black wash and green wash job. I love the effect.

Sorrows:

Lastly not part of the boxed set, but fitting in with the crew perfectly is Teddy:

Group shot:

And a group shot of all my Malifaux models:

But...but..but..what are they pictured on?

My new 36" by 36" malifaux mat from the people at
http://www.bagsoflove.co.uk/neoprene.aspx

Simply upload a photo and they will make a mat of it for you on 3.5mm neoprene. It is a bit thicker than the deadzone mat but just the same and can be rolled out creaseless time and time again. I did not use a very high quality picture but it fits my needs perfectly, all for £45 delivered. I am very happy with my purchase.

Adios.

I am a sucker for a sale, I thought I was going to spend no more money on minis for a month or so until Wayland Games had their summer sale. They can be bad at delivery but this I ordered on tuesday and had gotten it by friday, excellent service (check it is in stock and available to deliver though!) and all for £8.50 about 15 bucks to my US brethren. Also I am not that fond of the Wyrd metals but I love these two models.

I bring you The Dreamer, and the best named miniature ever Lord Chompy Bits. Lord Chompy Bits? Amazing.

The Dreamer (on resin base)

Queek has always been one of my favorite Skaven models, even the older one.

Looking forward to Lord Chompy Bits getting a paintjob. He must be heavy, haven't seen the metal Malifaux chaps for a while.

Good call on the alternative uses angelofvengeance, I think he is suitable for either, but probably more for the Dark Eldar beastie.

CC- True, I love both Queeks. I was once going to start a Skaven army but the hordes of rank and file put me off. This one is actually metal, so it must have been in my hands for a couple of years.

Lord Chompy bits is a heavy git, close to 100 grams.

Today will see no painting, but I got some mortuary base inserts for my McMourning crew, so today is a basing day.

So a nice bit of progress on some more Malifaux and some terrain:

The Dreamer:

Lord Chompy Bits:

I have also done half of the Latigo posse:

Perdita Ortega:

Santiago:

Enslaved Nephilim:

I also did something really daft his week, walked into my local Games Workshop store for the first time in about 4 years, just looking for an impulse buy to pick up and paint. In the end I went for some Chaos Cultists and picked up some terrain from the Lords of the ring range. This scales fine with malifaux, so here we are:

Bang! You Got Me!

The terrain was a real quick job as I never like to do much more than spray and then a few drybrushes, but it fits my purposes just fine.

But the problem? Going into the GW store awoke some memories in me and I ordered the new Dark vengeance boxed set on friday online...what have I done?

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2014/07/20 16:23:24

Lol! I still feel nothing when i walk into a store that sells gw stuff. Dark vengeance is 5/6th though right. Or did you mean the new new one, that i don't even know the proper name for?

All of the painted stuff looks nice, the terrain goes well too. Purpleish was a good choice for chompy bits imo.

Dark vengeance was pulled from shelves a while back and has been updted with the small 7th ed rulebook and an added model, to be released this saturday. One thing for sure is that I have zero interest in the rules, but should garner some fun from painting up the boxed set.

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2014/07/24 16:17:46

Post by: Thraxas Of Turai

What have I done...

When you say normal I was thinking Hawk Lords for the Marines and Iron Warriors for the Chaos. It is not a move by me into 40k, but I figured that for the price it was boatload of hard plastic minis for a decent price that I would get a lot more fun out of than my original investment.

I guess I could always sell them on after too.

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2014/07/24 17:30:50

Post by: Chemical Cutthroat

Indeed!

And by 'not normal' I mean 'not painting them Dark Angels and RedChaosGuys'.

So I certainly approve of the purple and metal that you're proposing. Not that my approval matters!

Iron Warriors were always cool to me, they always seemed less Demon-y than the other groups.

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2014/08/01 17:24:09

Post by: Thraxas Of Turai

Ageed, the demony side of chaos always put me off a bit (but that is kindof the point). Anyway, progress!

Have completed my Plague faction, a pair of 2A, the 3A Grenade Launcher and a few more 3A's:

Boom!

Group shots: (missing Dr Simmond on the 3rd level of the tower)

I am very happy with the massed look of them, and I now have them all painted to run plenty of variety in 70 point games. Think I will finish my Marauders next.

In the meantime I have painted my first 40k mini for a long time, a nicely drab Chaos Cultist.

My copy of dark vengeance has arrived and I did a few swaps with a friend for his mostly unpainted Assault on Black Reach marines as well, so I already have a sizeable Marine army. but which chapter?

I have narrowed it down to 2 Ultramarine successor chapters, the Doom Legion or the Hawk Lords? So I did a couple of test minis (to a quite basic standard, and unbased) to help me decide, can the good members of DakkaDakka weigh in and give their opinions too?

Doom Legion:

Hawk Lord:

This evening will see me give a few Marine a dettol bath to strip them and the start of me basing the Marines, I may also finish my Malifaux Ortega crew.

Adios!

Post by: angelofvengeance

Well, Doom Legion have an interesting history- they operate from a pre-Heresy star fortress, and now struggle to survive with their honor in tact after half the Chapter turned to Chaos. Colour scheme wise- I think it's too much like painting Necrons but that's just me lol.

Hawk Lords are fairly flyer intensive according to their background so could probably have a fair number of speeders and jump infantry, as well as Storm Talons and Storm Raven gunships. I think they have a nice colour scheme that stands out.

Also- I've attached the GW scheme if that'll help with Hawk Lords.

Half the chapter turned chaos? Meh, what about half a LEGION turning chaos... but uhh hey what do the dark angels know anyway

Plague look great, sir, I like the second gen that kind of looks like he's climbing a ladder, and the overall effect of the group is quite awesome.

I vote doom legion, gunmetal marines always work. Nice choice on the black bolter casing too, it really helps the gun stand out.

@angelofvengeance
Wait...wait...Hawk Lords are pink now? I swear in the older codexes (I sure as hell am not buying the newest one) I own they are purple.

I do like the fast attack background though, I think the Stormtalon is a nice kit for a reasonable price, and bikes and assault marines have always been my favourite. Those purchases are a long way off though.

@Grim:as you know hot water bending makes tiny conversions like that easy, am glad to have them all painted now. As a game it has real legs too, probably not the miniature/design uality to rival Infinity though.

@Warboss_Waaazag: True you do not see many Hawk Lords about, it may be the pink though!

But the score is currently:
Hawk Lords 2
Doom Legion 1.

Thank you for the input everyone

Baby steps Thraxas lol.

I'd say it's more of a purple mate. Similar to Pre heresy Emperors Children.
Also- you can use Raven Guard transfers on shoulder pads and just paint over in gold to make it Hawk Lords instead. Simples.

Well, Infinity has some things going for it, but I know at least one of my buddies so far has preferred deadzone due to lack of measuring tapes and such. I was indifferent on the paint schemes. Hawk Lords just look like Emperor's Children to me. And I know nothing about ze Doom Legion.

Whichever you picked would get painted up awesome, so I shall just sit back and reap the visual rewards regardless.

I like a lot of those Mantic sculpts for the zombies. Which is something I almost never say about Mantic. But they have some fun character going on.

Good work on the Dread so far, careful not to fall into the Flat-Trap. They have a lot of large flat space, so they can get a little dull without some highlights and creative brushwork. Looks good so far.

@Chemical Cutthroat:

Any tips on creative brushwork? I feel it is one area where I have zero knowledge and expertise. Highlights are there, so maybe go a bit more extreme? (or learn to take better pictures/make a lightbox).

@Paradigm: I think so, have you got any Deadzone stuff yourself? Also I am considering getting some Ogryns (Squall's influence there), have you got the new kit yet?

@Grimdork; Your time will come, with added Forge Father and Asterian goodness. My packet today was literally the single zombie sprue and four d8s. I am due my Enforcer sprues then that is the Kickstarter fulfilled for me.

Have based and undercoated the rest of the Black Reach Tactical Squad, Terminator squad and DZ Zombies. I have also began a bit of work on my malifaux Mcmourning crew. Also my better half came home with a present for me today as she recently started a new job so I have been doing a lot of extra cooking and cleaning around the house whilst she settles in, this is in addition to my 40 hours of nightshifts a week. So she went to a local Game Store and asked for "something nice" for under £30 and brought home a Stormtalon gunship. Lucky really, it could have been something of no use to me, am pretty stoked with my present and it looks like a very decent kit for the price.

My solution when I was working with the Dreads was to do a heavy drybrush over whatever your base coat is, then give it a heavy wash, then re-highlight (aggressively) with the basecoat again. It keeps the colors rich, and it usually gives the flat surfaces more depth than they'd have with just a straight coat of paint on them. Flat surfaces are sort of my bane.

I also sometimes feather the edges to soften things a bit. But it depends on the colors and all. I use a lot of washes and inks as a bit of a crutch.

I have all the currently available faction starters, I need to grab some of the more recent releases soon but got bitten by the Malifaux bug and then a Space Wolf revival which distracted me a bit. I'll be grabbing some FF and Asterians when they're on general release though. I also eagerly await the Strider and Enforcer releases.

I don't have the new Ogryn kit, I converted my own take on them from Ork Nobz. The rest of my IG army is True Scale Mantic and classic Warzone so I wanted something a little less chunky. From what I hear, though, the new Ogryn are nicely detailed models, but somewhat limited in posability.

Have revisited the Dread in light of the advice here, the main remedy was a glaze of Druchi Violet and a bolder highlight. The results are in and I am very happy with the Dreadnought now. The Latin freehand of "Vendo Rego" the very original "Hawk Lord" is a bit rough but it is going to stay like that. Enough waffle, pictures:

Also finally finished my Enforcer in Peacekeeper armour from the Warpath range, but he is for use in Deadzone. It is also nice to paint a nice chunk of metal once in a while, this mini has real heft to it (and needs the rivet on the top of the left leg repainting, I was a bit heavy handed).

And a comparison with the Dreadnought, as you can tell the Enforce Captain is a big miniature.

Then onto the next miniatures:

Cheers.

That dreadnought looks loads better Thraxas. As do the terminators. Have you thought of a name for the 1st Company of the Hawk Lords?
Also, are you going to have a similar company marking scheme/ rank scheme to Ultramarines. Successors chapters usually keep similar heraldry to that of their originating Chapter (In this case Ultramarines).

I've just read through all 4 pages at once (ok, I lie, I started last night and finished just now). Damn you've got some nice stuff. I really like the look of the Malifaux stuff, though I'm somewhat hesitant to jump into another game I might never play. I have a couple of their figs anyway as impulse FLGS purchases - but both fit in with other stuff I have. I'm pretty impressed with the speed you seem to get stuff done as well.

The dread looks great - I love dreadnoughts! The improvements with the shading that you applied in the last page or two have done wonders for it in terms of depth on the large flats. I agree with others on drilling out barrels - something else you can try once the MM barrels are drilled is to then paint the barrel rings (around the drill point - not the "barrel guard" part with the vents) a bright silver which will then make it pop from the brass of the barrel guard. You can then also add a bit of black/brown to those rims from the inside out.

Thanks for the tips and comments everyone:

Barrels: I have drilled out the Multi-melta and the Terminator squad Stormbolter barrels, I may draw the line at the bolters on the Tactical squad though. At least until I have a more delicate and intricate tool for the job.

@AngelOfVengeance: I think I will be quite dull and name the 1st Company after their homeworld of Preyspire, so maybe something like Sons Of Preyspire? Any suggestions would be appreciated, there is so little background on the Hawk Lords that I have a pretty blank canvas to work with.

Colour wise I have never been a fan of different coloured shoulder pad trim to represent company colour. My lot are 4th Company (with obvious exception to veterans, scouts et al) and I will be sticking with the gold shoulder guard trim to unify the army. Where are you getting all these painting/colour guides from?

@WarbossWaaazag: Agreed, and acted upon.

@Grimdork: The black dot trick may get my Tactical Marines through...

@Azazelx: Thanks for taking the time to look through the blog. To me the Malifaux minis are great, but I find the card mechanics a bit counter intuitive so for me it may be a game that I may never play. But they are my favourite plastics on the market, but you have to pay a lot for them. Thing is a crew of 6-7 models would be a playable force for you, if any local gamers play it I would suggest having a go.

As for Dreadnoughts it was the desire to paint one that got me back into 40k, that combined with seeing what I was spending on Malifaux and a post Deadzone desire to make models out of proper hard plastic rather than PVC. 40K is still the easiest system to get a game of round here, and if I spend £30 a month odd I will soon have a decent force especially after having combined the contents of Assault on Black Reach and Dark Vengeance. That leads to...

Question Time

Do I remove the Dark Angel details from the Dark Vengeance models? I fear I may ruin them if I do attempt it, and also the angel wings with sword could passably be Hawk wings?

Anyway enough waffle, today has seen me complete the Terminator Squad and start on the StormTalon, pictures will be up tomorrow (Sunday inn the UK). Apologies for the wall of text. But your hints, tips, comments, criticisms and questions are greatly appreciated.

Thraxas: for your company master, I can imagine their title being something like Princeps. Though that title is used for Titan pilots too so might be confusing.

How about the Aquilonians?

Sounds like a bit of a breakaway Scientologist group to me, so I guess it kindof fits.

Progress! Have done the Terminators, here are Squad Galen:

Have also finished my initial test Tactical squad member, and have started 4 of his fellow Marines.

And have also began work on the Stormtalon:

Malifaux wise I have also started work on the McMourning "Body Of Evidence" crew. These are very early WIP on the Flesh Construct:

And a Nurse, I do not want that syringe anywhere near me!

Very cool all round (even if I did read that as Squad Glen to start with ) the Hawk Lords scheme is really cool and too rarely seen, I think! Looking forward to seeing what you do with McMourning.

Loving how your Hawk Lords are turning out Thraxas. Squad Galen looks badass. The Storm Talon looks brilliant in Hawk Lords heraldry.
Also- you think that syringe is big? Check out the Ork Painboy's 'Urty Syringe in 40K

I don't know if you know this already, but when you put the canopy on the Storm Talon, be sure to use PVA glue and not super glue/poly cement. Otherwise the fumes will react to the clear plastic and make it look all cloudy.

@Paradigm: Squad Glen has a certain naff ring to it, maybe the other Terminators can be squad Graham? "Tremble all who face the average dull male names of the Emperor!". McMourning is a rare one for me as every model is starting with a white undercoat rather than Black.

@Grim: It may even get faster, come tuesday I am off work for 12 solid days and nights.

@angelofvengeance: Urgh. I had that happen to an Eldar Falcon canopy back around 1996, never, ever, again. Such a simple way to ruin a nearly completed miniature.

White undercoat? Probably made that blue on the nasty nurse a bit more fun to paint, eh?

Boy howdy sounds like a decent sized vacation. I'll get a lot of extra down time in the winter, but still doubt I'll have your turnaround.

Yeah that always used to grate on my nerves when I was younger. I used to collect model aircraft and I could never understand why it did that until later years.

Instead of the scientologisty (not a real word but whatever) type name, how about Guardians of the Spire?

Generally speaking, you're entitled to 28 days of annual leave each year. 8 public holidays, and 20 days statutory entitlement in the UK. Obviously this depends on the employer's policy.

Huh that's kind of neat. If I had a 9-5 with a retail outfit i'd probably accrue vacation eventually, but with landscaping I just kind of don't work for a couple of months. Well, not at landscaping, gotta find something to do in the winter.

Thanks everybody, it is a murky day over here in England so the pictures are not the best but there is progress:

AOBR Tactical squad is done:

Sergeant:

Combat Squads:

Full 10 Man Squad:

Have also finished the Stormtalon:

Not finished yet but the AOBR Captain is nearly done:

Have also done two test Chaos Space Marines with an Iron Warriors theme, any recommendations for these?

As it stands for my Hawk Lords I have completed:

Troops: 10 Man Tactical Squad

Elite: 5 Man Tactical Squad
Dreadnought

Fast Attack: Stormtalon

Adios

Nice work! Any ideas on what direction you're going to take the Hawk Lords in as an army? I know they use a lot of fliers and do a bunch of low-altitude drops, so maybe a bunch of Assault Marines.

I do not plan on playing 40k much, if at all. So I am planning on going for a little bit of everything. The "competitive" army lists I see are so dull and full of min/max of just a few units. But, as you suggest, they are very much seen as a fast attack army so a big 10 man assault squad and maybe a 10 man (or 8 bikes and 1 attack bike squad) bike squad to go with the Stormtalon.

Also every unit will have a transport as well, but I will have to have a Vindicator as I adore the design. Jeebus after looking at that lot I had better remortgage the house!

Throw in some Vanguard Veterans for some particularly bling'd assault troops

You could get the eagle head from the Shrine of the Aquila for some bling and maybe have the Demolisher cannon barrel poking out of it lol

Speaking of Vindicators.. could look at getting this Deimos pattern one from Forgeworld. Looks sufficiently brutal for Space Marines I feel.

More progress on my Hawk Lords:

Captain:

Did a Rhino for the Tactical Squad:

And finished a Vindicator:

And also a squad of Scouts with Sniper rifles, quite happy with how this lot turned out:

Their Camo Cloaks:

And group shot of the army, I think this may be hitting 1000pts

Also what is on the WIP bench?

Well the Dark Vengeance Terminators, but also want to finish my Malifaux Ortego Posse, watch out for "Papa Loco", he is a bit dangerous:

Also I badly need to get my Deadzone mojo back, I want to get everything painted before I consider buying any Asterians or Forge Fathers.

Thank you Sirs.

@Chemical Cutthroat: I think because a Malifaux crew is relatively small, and (mostly) individual sculpts I take a bit more time and care in painting, that and the sculpts/plastics are just so good that I want to do them justice.

Just a few WIP pictures, now undercoated and ready to go is the Malifaux mercenary Killjoy, he is available to any faction that you want. Plenty of people have broken his spindly chain hook, I intend not to:

WIP Assault squad, these were black undercoat, Xereus Purple layer, then a Genestealer Purple drybrush (very lightly) followed by a Druchii Violet Wash:

The same on the Terminators:

Hello people, have nailed Killjoy. Am very happy with how he has turned out:

Flattering rear shot:

And scale shot:

Have also made progress with my Latigo Posse.

Papa Loco is done, but for the life of me I cannot get a decent close up photo of him.

Nino is done too:

Group shots of the nearly complete Posse:

Last to be done is Francisco and his big huge Sombrero:

Then after that I plan to do Hannah in her big mechanical suit, here is the suit sans Hannah:

And scale shot vs and Enforcer:

Thank you as ever gentlemen. Had quite the hobby mojo today, so managed to get a battlezone done that has been on the shelf for months just looking at me. I have also had my Gencon order from Wyrd arrive on tuesday so have made and based the following:

Hannah (the Big Mechanical bot based person seen in my previous post).
Gencon Exclusive "Bad Teddy".
"Hide and Seek" new Dreamer Crew, this is plastic and has:
The Dreamer
Lord Chompy Bits
Copellius
3 Daydreams
3 Alps (do not know what an Alp is look here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alp_(folklore)

Anyway onto the battlezone:

Standoff

I may do a group shot of all my Deadzone terrain soon as well, just 2 more battlezones done and that is my terrain painted.

Post by: Thraxas Of Turai

A bit more progress, I decided to use a darker more military type grey for this Battlezone. I wanted it to look like a more official and well looked at military unit:

Helfather vs a Reb:

I also did a couple of barricades, these are dull so I have added some Mawbeasts and a Plague Terraton for interest:

I have also started a bit of work on Hannah and the new Lord Chompy Bits, very early days on these ones:

Simple Ironbreaker coat, a wash with Army Painter Strong Tone (watered down) then some Loren Green with a green wash. My question is do I add any rust to any of the "interior" skeleton?

Rear:

Lord Chompy bits, just a basecoat, a few highlights and a purple wash thus far:

Also for the Dreamer crew I have finished the 3 daydreams, these are manifestations of the Dreamers mind and so I went to town on the colours a bit:

and all 3 together:

Adios.

Thank you for all the feedback, have been on more of a Malifaux splurge this week. Especially the 50mm beasties.

First is Hannah, Freikorps Archivist. She will fit in well with my Rail Crew.I wanted an almost Spitfire like green for her, and I think it went quite well:

Also did Miss Ery, the Gencon release Teddy:

And have also started work on Miss Terious, an old Gencon exclusive. She counts as a Guild Guard so fits in with either Lady Justice or my Ortega crew:

Have also done my first Alp for my Dreamer crew, I wanted a kind of greyscale nighmareish affect so there is very limited colour on him:

And finally for the Dreamer I have finished Lord Chompy Bits the 2nd:

Here he is with the old metal Dreamer and the old metal LCB on the left, he may be on some sort of steroids:

Inspired by Grimdork and the tightening of his hobby belt I think my next post will be a big ol' list of the things I have to paint up until December and the inevitable next influx of goodness. Adios.

I like that a lot, I need a new FPS in my life, has anyone given Destiny a go yet? Never played XCOM either and I see a lot about it.

Aside from that, are you a fan of long, boring lists? If so today is your lucky day!

Given motivation by Grim in his excellent blog I am going to reduce my hobby spend in the run-up to Christmas and am aiming to get as much as possible painted up. So for the 3 game systems I currently have models for here is my full "to do" list.

Deadzone: 55 models total.

Boomer (1)
Freya (1)
Enforcers (9 troops, 1 burst laser) (10). (5 done)
Zombies (5).
Marauders (11)

(2 Rippers / 2 Mawbeasts/5 Commandos / 2 Snipers.)

Rebs (27)

( 6 troopers /1 commander/ 2 terratons/2grogan/6 yndij/2 sorak/ 2 drones /2 Zee/1 Judwan Medic/1 Kraaw/ T-K Zero team).

Malifaux 17 models total.

Dreamer Crew (4)
(Dreamer/Coppelius/2 Alps)

McMourning Crew (7)
(McMourning/2 nurses/1 Flesh Construct/ 1 Canine Remains/ 1 Zombie Chihuahua/1 Sebastien)

Desperate Mercenaries (2)
Izamu The Armour (1)
Vanessa (1)
Hans (1)
Miss Terious (1)

Warhammer 40k 71 models total

Space Marines (25)

Terminator Squad (5)
Assault Squad (5)
Bike Squad (3)
Tactical Squad (10)
Captain (1)
Librarian (1)

Iron Warriors (46)

Hellbrute (1)
Lord (1)
Tactical Squad (10, but 2 done so 8)
Chosen Squad (7)
Cultists (30, but 1 done so 29)#

Dull eh?

So in total that is 143 miniatures, no time frame to get them done but I want to get as much done as possible before Christmas without hurting the quality.

So if anybody wants to see anything in particular painted just request it, and I will see what I can do.

Until next time...

I think once I start knocking 5/10 man squads out it will come down quite quickly. I was just shocked at how many Rebs I have to do, one of the problems of them being my de facto faction of choice and thus getting double of them. I think the fact that they are largely useless in the game is not helping my motivation either. But it is a chance to change the colour scheme a bit so I think they are my next port of call. I also have to get out of the habit of painting all my 40/50mm base stuff first. I just love the big guys.

Also my FLGS has the DZ Asterians in and it is payday tomorrow...damn my willpower. Somebody stop me.

DZ Asterians are pretty sweet, but quite skinny. Be especially careful when cleaning the mould lines off em, as their not-Iron Man-repulsor Cyphers hands are so so tiny.

So have made a nice little headway into the list and have gone on a little Deadzone splurge in the form of Marauder and Rebel miniatures. I had 143 to paint and have done 16 deadzone miniatures in the past week so am down to 127.

So Marauders:

2 Mawbeasts:

5 Marauders:

And a group shot of the Marauders I have painted:

And now the Rebs:

Terrible drone picture:

6 rebs Troopers:

And Dozer from Dreadball as an alternative Deadzone Teraton:

And now my rebs group shots:

Until the next time.

Those are some pretty nice collections there! Good idea to use Dozer as another TT, although running 2 in anything less than a Code 13/100 point game would be 'interesting'...

Dark Vengeance Sir.

A nice bit of progress recently.

First I got 5 Enforcers done, 2 of the rifle guys and 2 close combat variants:

Also got 4 more Rebs done:

Judwan Medic:

Kraaw:

T-K Zero team (poor picture, sorry)

I am not really happy with my Deadzone stuff at the moment, the rebs have just been a PITA to clean and put together and I think that has been reflected in the painting.

More fun for me has been the Malifaux and 40k stuff, so have made some Iron Warrior progress.

Have done 3 more Chaos Marines to bring me up to combat squad:

Have nearly done the Helbrute as well, just a little more work to go:

So as for the list I had 127 miniatures to paint, that now stands at 115.

Until next time.

Yep great stuff! I think of the deadzone stuff the Kraaw is my favorite. It looks like you had to paint in his mouth for him? Still haven't gotten around to my rebs yet (funny as they were my favorite faction while the campaign was running!).

The chaos marines are looking good. I have always been a fan of the hellbrute regardless of what other folks may have to say about it's aesthetic or battlefield efficacy.

Agreed on the Helbrute too, the Missus likes it so much that she has challenged me to a game of Deadzone using Iron Warriors as Enforcer proxies, guess I need a few more painted up before that though.

Hah sweet!

5 Iron Warriors is plenty, you can only get 6-7 enforcers in a standard game and only then if they're pretty basic. 5 is totally doable If you take the Hellbrute as a strider you won't even get 4 enforcers in sideways, maybe best to save him for code 13 games

So the Strider will be the Helbrute then I'm guessing? Maybe have the back story of it being an experimental weapon attempting to harness the Plague virus?

Also just a suggestion- you could make it look really daemonic if you give him baleful eyes- dab some white in and then use Waywatcher Green or perhaps Lamenters Yellow for that possessed look?

Fair call AOV, am considering maybe a light green wash to the "inner" face to add a bit of distinction, but I like that idea for the eyes.

Currently on the painting table are:

5 Enforcers

5 Man Hawk Lords assault squad

2 Zee ('s?)

Last 4 models of the Dreamer Crew.

All basecoats/washes and bases done just picking out the details now. Am shocked by how little Deadzone stuff I have left to paint.

Was going to say Thraxas- you've really been making a big push with your DZ stuff- I've barely got a 3rd of mine painted (admittedly, I've been focusing on my Dark Angels and Dark Eldar in light of their new releases)

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2014/10/31 13:38:53

And obviously what I had on the painting table was not what I painted next.

Have finished my Malifaux Dreamer crew, that involved painting The Dreamer, Coppelius and 2 Alps.

Coppelius:

The Dreamer (looks absolutely hideous here, it is not like that in real life, no idea what is going on)

Full Crew:

And full crew with old LCB and Dreamer

Am very happy with this crew and how it turned out, but cannot get into the game at all so am considering selling off my Malifaux stuff otherwise it will just be lost in a box collecting dust.

Adios

I think the old LCB is more imposing thematically, but the new guy is so much bigger he's still scarier overall.

Copp...err mindflayer guy is pretty scary too, that's a neat crew overall and well done as always

Desperate Mercenaries (the one guy graces the cover of the M2E rulebook and is probably one of my all time favourite miniatures:

Not exactly a current update but in honour of Mantic's Kings Of War second kickstarter I thought I would post a few pictures of some of my smallish Undead and abyssal dwarf armies:

Mhorgoth the Faceless (still my number 1 favourite Mantic sculpt):

Revenant Cavalry:

Zombie horde:

Vampire on Undead Pegasus:

Army on the Walnut Plains:

Abyssal dwarf Sorceror/ Standard/ Sorceror:

Fire teams:

Army on the "Invisible Plains"

Will have some real time updates later in the week.

To be fair there are 2 Deathstorms...

I have about 1500 points of Blood Angels and also Iron warriors. My only real decision is who gets the Land Raider? Am erring on the side of Chaos as my siege boys have mainly elite and fast attack choices currently.

I am also daunted by painting the red of the BA.

Iron Warriors to do list is:

Lord
7 Chosen
5 CSM
35 Cultists
10 Raptors
5 Terminators
Heldrake

Maybe a Land Raider?

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2015/01/03 16:12:01

Post by: Paradigm

I think Chaos could benefit most from the LR, primarily for the Termies. BA could make use of it with the DC or the Termies, but DC Jump Packs are cheap enough now that they're a no-brainer, and Chaos Termies are probably more useful than BA ones with the right loadout.

As for red, I swear by GW Mechrite Red (now Mephiston Red) for BA. Black base, a single M. Red coat, Agrax Wash and re-highlight M. Red for pretty nice results. Check out the GW youtube BA painting guide if you haven't already, it's surprisingly good.

Land raiders are cool, doesn't chaos get access to some kind of techmarine now? Or does he just mess up enemy tanks?

Excellent haul, looking forward to seeing you tackle it

I bought the Mephiston red spray, but it was thin as Kate Moss. After shaking it for about 10 minutes too, but your recipe seems a good route to go. Am going to tackle some BA today, will hopefully show the results tomorrow.

I think you are right about the Chaos Terminators, have to get those Combi weapons, Reaper Autocannon and power weapons into range somehow.

@Grim will have to delve into the codex but I do not remember such a tech marine

I have a feeling the Warpsmith is more an anti-techmarine. He can repair, but can also Curse an enemy vehicle (gives all its guns 'Gets Hot'), and before the game can lower the cover of one piece of terrain by 1. Pretty neat abilities, and IW should run one on principle!

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2015/01/03 21:36:01

Post by: GrimDork

Damn Iron Warriors. They're one of those chaos legions that seems to live in the back of my brain popping out when people talk about them or show off neat minis and trying to make me get/paint some

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2015/01/05 14:12:30

Post by: Thraxas Of Turai

I like the Warpsmiths equipment, power axe and the mecha tendrils give him +2 attcks and the choice of a flamer or meltagun shot every time. But is he really there to kill stuff? I dunno, I think he is more there for the abilities that Para listed.

Anyway...progress. My first Blood Angel, and thanks to Para's recipe it was not as difficult as I thought.

I am using the Terminators from the Deathstorm box, but as a result of an ebay purchase I had some assault arms lying around so turned the unit into assault Terminators:

A few touch-ups are needed but I am very happy with the result. Next up are the rest of his unit and an old friend:

Firstly, nice work on the BA terminators. Good solid reds on them.

Second- how did you do the eye lenses? It looks like white with Waywatcher Green glaze but I can't be sure.

Also- what's happened to your Hawk Lords by the way?

Loren forest, Scorpion Green and a dot of white.

My Hawk Lords are still going, in fact I may finish my assault squad tonight. I have a tactical, terminator and bike squad to do for them for now (all from the DV boxed set).

Seeing the pictures my red the evil sunz scarlet and wild rider red highlights are not that apparent, but they are there.

Thanks fellas, I am liking the Fragioso too, may start work on Abel the Death Company Dreadnought soon too.

I turned 33 today, and the missus went Marine crazy again and got me a box of Chaos Space Marines and some SM Devastators. With all the Heavy weapons included I am going to convert some Havocs for my Iron Warriors.

So the remaining 5 CSM 's, do I turn them into a small squad to fill a troops slot (maybe with ccw 's?) or use them to bulk the Havocs into a 10 man squad? Which is best?

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2015/01/10 12:29:55

Post by: Paradigm

Since Chaos can't Combat Squad, my vote goes to extra troops. 5 men with ccw and MoK might make nice mini-Bezerkers, or 5 with MoN are nice objective sitters.

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2015/01/10 12:43:11

Post by: Thraxas Of Turai

Cheers Para.

So does the footprint of a 10 man seen as a bigger disadvantage than perhaps being able to save the odd heavy weapon trooper in exchange for a bolter csm?

Also load outs, I am thinking:

Havocs: 2 Lascannon, 1 missile Launcher, 1 heavy bolter.

Devastators: Multi Melta, 2 Plasma Cannon, 1 Heavy bolter (may do 2 heavy bolter/1 plasma cannon).

Good god- your missus is spoiling you rotten with the plastic-crack of late! Hold on to that one! haha. Also, Happy birthday fella, enjoy it!

Havocs are fun and shooty. Though you could also bulk up your Hawk Lords with a Devastator team. You get a Heavy Bolter with CSMs don't you?

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2015/01/10 16:06:00

Post by: GrimDork

I kind of like the idea of having the extra bullet sponges myself, but only if you think you could afford to have the otherwise 'dead weight' in your list. For a group of devastators I could see taking both anti tank and anti infantry in the same squad since they could combat squad (if you take the extra bodies), but what is your reasoning for the havocs? If you are shooting at tanks the heavy bolter will feel like a toy, and if you are shooting at infantry to use the heavy bolter the other stuff is gonna be less optimal.

If you think it looks cool or are just trying to use up the models, that I can get. Consider converting the HB to an autocannon though, I've seen that done and pretty well at that.

Also, happy birthday

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2015/01/10 17:20:45

Yeah, I agree with Grim. Since you can't combat squad, I think it's better to have 5 guys actually contributing something beyond being 13ppm bullet shields. If it were Guard, on the other hand, meatshields all the way!

Also on the weapons, I suggest all AT or all Anti-infantry. So with what you have, maybe 2Las2Plas for the SM, and 2Auto (HB with barrel extension)2Missile for the CSM.

And yeah, Happy Birthday!

Thanks for all the advice and good wishes fellas.

Grim's "if it looks cool" is usually at the forefront of my mind really, I have zero competiveness so just go for the units/models I like and hope for the best.

In the end I went for:

Havocs: 2 Autocannon/2 Lascannon as I wanted a bit of flexibilty.

5 Man CSM squad with CCW 's (flamer).

Devastators: 2 Plasma Cannon, Missile Launcher, Multi-Melta.

Also did a hell of a lot of construction done, will get some pics up asap once the light is a bit better.

Sounds good! Havoc autocannons look badass! For my Dark Angels devastators, I went for x2 Plasma Cannons and x2 Heavy Bolters & Sergeant w/ Power fist and Signum. Quite good when you're facing Tyranids and Chaos.

Also got a Legion heavy weapon kit from Forgeworld a while ago, so I've got a load of 2nd ed style heavy weapons to choose from! Plus it's quite fluffy, as Dark Angels had a fair amount of cool toys after the Horus Heresy.

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2015/01/11 11:27:46

Post by: Thraxas Of Turai

Oooh, they look nice. I do like the idea of flexibility in heavy weapons squads. You are never going to be targeting just APC/tanks or infantry in a game, but then again you do reduce your effectiveness by splitting your unit into anti tank and anti infantry.

Also the new Skaven Stormvermin Rat ogres... with a bit of conversion possible Obliterators? Cannot stand the current miniatures for those.

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2015/01/11 11:37:19

Post by: angelofvengeance

Oblits: Holy gak- yeah do that! I was going to use them as Grotesques for Dark Eldar.

I have a few spare marines so I can change the load out of the Devs if something more violent is needed. Thing is, with lascannons you only have the 1 shot, one kill. Plasma you get a powerful AP2 blast (at the risk of blowing yourself up) Heavy Bolters give you 3 shots.

Grotesques seems like a good shout too.

Anyway some pictures from yesterday afternoon. It was basically an afternoon of construction, darts and football. Followed by an evening of booze and a gig (aiming to do 2 a week this year).

Land Raider, Heldrake, 2 Raptor Squads and Terminators:

Tank buster raptor squad (2 Meltas and Power Fist)

Close Combat/hit and run squad (2 Flamers, power sword)

Havocs, these are constructed but need the mould lines removing:

Autocannon 1:

Thanks gents. It has been a terrible start to the year, my grandmother passed away on January 2nd at the grand age of 92. Just days later my Mum's lymphoma was re-diagnosed, this time much more severe and basically untreatable. The result is she has been given 2/3 months to live. So I think I am going to treat painting and modelling as therapy and to keep my mind on other things. Mum has always been proud of my miniatures too, so it will be a good thing to show her as luckily she only lives a 20 minute walk away.

I have not been lazy during my time not posting on the blog, so here is an update of mostly finished work of an Iron warriors flavour.

Dark Vengeance Chaos Lord:

Raptors (Tank Busters Variety)

6 Man Chaos Space Marine Close Combat Squad (will become 10 man eventually)

Terminators:

rounded out my previously 5 man Chaos SM squad to 10:

Itty Bitty Land Raider:

Heldrake. Try as I might this was murder to photograph.

Group shot (without the close combat squad)

Have also began work on the Havocs:

And have also kit bashed my remaining 4 close combat Marines using the legs from AOW 's Corruptors of the Apocalypse Box. I could not pass 24 not chaos warriors and a metal character for £18 from North Star Games in their sale:

Until the next time.

That is why I think I have been so productive, I do not think it has hit me yet really. But between my Dad, sister and myself the funeral is largely sorted. Only because I cannot paint the things. That and on CSM bolters there is not a lot of room to paint them. The ones on the Land Raider are just transfers.

And fluff wise theoretically every CSM and their weapons could be covered with hazard stripes, it is all dangerous right?

Do not feel daft for asking, I do not even know why I brought up Mum here originally anyway, maybe just easier to share with people I do not really know? I am lucky anyway, some people never even know their parents (the Missus is in that situation). Mum lived a full life and was loved, I think we can ask for little more than that from life. But I do appreciate all of your thoughts, thank you.

I plan to try and finish the Havocs tonight and maybe even start the Dark Vengeance Chosen. Given their load outs and how many people bemoan their usefulness they may just be used as squad leaders in the army. Am above 1100pts worth already too and have a legal army of:

HQ
2 Troops
2 Fast Attack
2 Elite
and either a Heavy Support/ Dedicated Transport dependent on how I choose to use the Land Raider.

The big question is when do I decide to paint the 35 Cultists that I have.

Post by: Paradigm

Using the Chosen as Squad Leaders is a decent idea, they are too cool not to use but probably a pain to convert. If you're after ideas, though, I say convert the mace guy into a Dark Apostle to lead your Cultists (you only need to add some parchments, maybe a candle or two). Should be easy enough. For the rest, perhaps see if you can scrounge a Jump Pack or two so you can have some alternate Raptor leaders? (I'm thinking the PF user might be good here)

Some of them are detailed enough to work as anything up to a Lord as well, so the LC guy and the one with the Axe could just be alternative Chaos Lord loadouts.

I think the 30pts (IIRC) on the dual LC is a mental cost for a Chosen Marine. That said the idea of sticking them in a Rhino and causing havoc on the charge with their diverse load out could be fun.

My 10 year old nephew has also shown an interest in 40k so we are having a 1000pt a side Hawk Lords vs Iron Warriors game at the weekend. I will try and simplify the rules a bit for his first game and also try and make some even
sided army lists.

I shall do, currently we have not decided who will be commanding who. I think I will let him see the armies and choose whichever he fancies best.

Here are the sample armies, any suggestions as to whether they are balanced enough?

Iron Warriors:

HQ: Chaos Lord, plasma pistol, power weapon, Aura of Dark Glory =120pts

Troops:

10 Chaos Space Marines, power weapon, meltagun, heavy bolter = 175pts.

6 Chaos Space Marines, close combat weapons, flamer, power weapon =124pts.

Elites:

Helbrute =105pts

5 Terminators, 2 power fists, reaper autocannon =196pts

Fast attack:

5 Raptors, 2 meltaguns, powerfist =140pts

Heavy Support:

5 Havocs, 2 Autocannons, 2 lascannons =135pts

Total =995pts.

Hawk Lords Space Marines: (N.B not filling the 2 troops slots with this one, I will let the combat squad Tacticals count as 2 choices)

HQ: Captain, Relic Blade =115pts

Troops:

10 Man Tactical Squad, flamer, missile launcher =160pts

Rhino =35pts

Elites:

Dreadnought=100pts

5 Man Terminator Squad =200pts

Fast Attack:

5 Man Assault Squad, power weapon, plasma pistol =115pts

Stormtalon, Lascannons =140pts

Heavy Support:

Vindicator =125pts

Total =990pts

I want it all painted on the table so I also have available:

Iron Warriors: Heldrake (170pts), Land Raider (230pts).

Hawk Lords: Sniper Scout Squad (74pts).

Will get some WIP pictures up later too.

I do tend to write lists with things I like in them (mainly a bit of everything) rather than any kind of OP based army. Irrespective of how useless they are seen I believe that and Space Marine or CSM army should have a tactical squad in them (or the Chaos equivalent). Anyway Jack (my nephew) really enjoyed his first game. He chose Iron Warriors in the end and after 5 turns we called it a stalemate. I have plenty of pictures and will upload them soon. I think we may have a convert...

For now here are my completed Havocs (or Tank Killers as Jack called them).

Also got the Aspiring Champion (No codex entry for these though? Why?) from the re-release of dark vengeance the appallingly named Vrosh Tattersoul:

Have noticed a small brush hair on the power axe haft so I will remove that.

Toodle Pip.

There is a Codex entry- he's just a squad leader guy for your tactical squads etc. , not an actual HQ choice. Though you could always field him as your Lord/Chosen champion if you wanted. He certainly looks badass enough for the job.

I do wish Citadel or Forge World would do some holstered weapons other than pistols. I quite like the Aspiring champion's back pack.

I like that way of approaching the game. I always do the same thing when I'm making my own forces for any game. Fluff and theme > WAAC.
The Havoc conversions look great, as does the champion. I really need to get back to my own IW one day. Poor, neglected little mites...

Hey Thraxas- since you're doing an Iron Warriors warband- you could get one of these metal Warsmiths for £8. How's that for a slice of fried gold? Beats paying £18 for the resin!

As it happens I bought one last week, a great deal in comparison to most single character models. It is made out of some sort of metal though, the material holds detail well, does not melt under reasonable temperatures and has a lovely heft to it. Maybe the material will catch on one day?

I also ordered a Warpsmith and Dante, the initial order came about because the 32mm bases were finally back in stock. I hope to get some WIPs of the characters up soon.

Hah! I don't hate Finecast as much as some (I've been lucky with the few I have) but I wouldn't mind seeing metal make a comeback from GW. Especially if we went back to £8 character models (yeah, right, a guy can dream!)

To be fair the Finecast Warpsmith and Dante were great casts, just too expensive and I think areas like delicate weapon hafts could be a problem. May have to look on the site to see how many metal minis are left.

Warpsmith:

Dante:

Nice job there Thraxas- the gold came out really nicely!

Are you going to paint the chimneys on the sides to give it a fiery daemonic look? (I mean the eyes and mouths on them). Maybe get a few wisps of cotton wool and paint them a fiery red to go inside them?

I painted (well given the consistency more washed) the chimneys/mouths/etc with Nikiliulrikakakakakakakakakakakaka oxide for a kind of Daemonic look. It obviously did not work.

@Para Doubt I will ever have the confidence to do NMM, the gold was gold over a silver undercoat with a sepia wash. Simple as.

Old warsmith does look rather good on a 32mm, I was trying to resist the switch but he does look rather silly with his toes off the edge on 25's, same probably goes for the big chap as I just grabbed one in an effort to get a golden ticket.

Iron warriors are really coming along nicely, especially the dark vengeance lord on the page over, looks like I've got another blog to follow!

Great work, Thraxas. The GW Oxide on the Forgefiend doesn't look daemonic here, but works well as metal discolouration due to heat, etc. Warsmith and Warpsmith both look great as well.

And finally the Warpsmith. The black and yellow mechatendrils may be a bit mental but i think i will stick with it:

And now the completed Warsmith:

and Dante:

and a face-off:

@Azazelx: Sure thing, will get some shots up either later today or tomorrow, but given you are in Aus that may have no bearing on the day for you. Would you prefer unpainted and unconstructed? IIRC there are 4 unique sets of legs. They are from these kits:

I picked them up when North Star had them for £18 (About $36 AU) at that price for 24 models and an exclusive metal champion they were basically a steal.

Really nice minis here!!

Most of the non-GW stuff is lost on me, but they all look great!

How are you getting on with the AoW corrupters of the apoc.? I built a set for my Legion of Chaos army. They look cool, but I found them to be a bit of a paint to work with.

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2015/02/25 17:51:14

Post by: Thraxas Of Turai

The corrupters are indeed a pain in the bottom to put together, the material is just not that well suited for such multi-part plastics, but I do love the models which is a good thing considering I have 44 of the gits to put together.

I actually bought them for an intended End Times Chaos force, have a hell of a lot of catching up to equal your army though Zambro. I bought that individual AOW Chaos Lord too, love that model. But does he belong in Fantasy or 40k?

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2015/02/25 21:20:01

Post by: Zambro

Which AoW model in particular? The one that comes with the set (Corrupters + exclusive lord)?
Either way, chances are it's fantasy..

44 of them? Thats a lot! I battled through the 24, in 3 batches of 8. Couldn't imagine doing another 2.5-3 batches. If its worth anything, I made little GS balls to put in their wrist joints, as well as liberal applications of super glue. The GS was enough to hold the hand/weapon while the glue dries, and if you get the amount of GS right, it'll fill the gaps too.
Oh, and have fun ranking them up! lol. 24 was hard enough. You got arms, weapons and shields shooting off in every direction!

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2015/02/25 21:24:05

Post by: Azazelx

The legs look pretty good, though unpainted you can see the "nurgle" aspect of battle damage all over them. I understand that AoW are also doing some non-not-nurgle not-CW shortly as well, so that might be another good source of legs as well.

Also, I enjoyed the track you linked.

@Zambro: Good tips there, I meant this guy http://www.avatars-of-war.com/eng/web/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&prodcode=52&prodname=Lord+of+Pestilence+with+weapon+and+shield&mediumcast=&id=118&Itemid=120

With a backpack and maybe a weapon swap he could easily fit into 40K.

@Azazelx I do like the legs a lot. Glad you liked the track, if you liked that maybe try "Everest" by them as well?

@AngelOfVengeance I do not think that AOW do any sci-fi/Future stuff but there are plenty of bits ripe for conversion.

Thanks everyone, have been getting my head down at work recently and have not been painting much but I intend to pick it up in the next few days.

Onto another point Mum left me a bit of money specifically for miniatures so I am intending on starting a new army but do not really know where to go. My ideas are:

Warriors of Chaos (a bit wary of this as we do not know the future of fantasy).

Imperial Guard: This is a great start and about half of the cash I have:

http://elementgames.co.uk/games-workshop/warhammer-40k/imperial-guard/astra-militarum-cadian-defence-force

Necrons.

Maybe some Anvil Industry After Life stuff, although they are limited in the amount of miniatures currently available.

Anyone have any preferences?

Personally, with something like that I'd buy into something entirely new and really make it a labour of love. To that end, I suggest something high-quality and perhaps low-ish model count.

How do you feel regarding Infinity? The minis are exceptional if you can get into the overall aesthetic, you don't need to paint an absolute ton of stuff (so could focus on quality) and you could probably get a good pair of fleshed-out factions without too much outlay. Start with Operation Icestorm, perhaps, and expand from there?

Afterlife seems a good bet given Anvil's track record of quality, if you can hang on until the stuff from the second KS hits retail then again it looks like you could buy in to the game without breaking the bank.

If you want a 40k/Fantasy army, how about Demons? They could work for both with some creative basing, so give you a doorway into Fantasy that, if you don't like the direction that game goes, can still be used alongside your 40k Chaos. Lots to choose from model-wise as well.

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2015/03/13 07:31:39

Post by: Thraxas Of Turai

Thanks for the replies gents. I think I am leaning towards Guard with Anvil minis as Stormtroopers and the like (scale allowing).

Some good ideas there Para. In theory I like the look of most Infinity models but I find the factions and names confusing, in reality I have no idea who or what is going on.

Daemons are a no for me, it is probably my least favourite of the GW ranges due to models like this:

http://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Daemons-of-Chaos-Blood-Throne-of-Khorne

What is that meant to be?

Another thought are Tyranids, I have the contents of the DeathStorm box for them and that seems like a reasonable starting point. it would also be nice to paint something more organic.

Then again there are so many rumours as to what is due in the coming months that I may just hang fire for a bit. There are also plenty more miniature ranges out there that need exploring.

Thraxas Paints: Not dead yet. @ 2015/03/13 07:59:18

Post by: angelofvengeance

Nids are a good idea considering you've got Deathstorm. Plus the Brood Lord looks too badass not to have a paint job on him You have a carnifex, 3 warriors and a stealer brood to go at as well. All you really need is some Gaunts & Gants for cannon fodder to drown your opponents in. And a Hive Tyrant.

Agreed, I'm thinking I may have to grab that set at some point (only problem is I'm not a huge fan of a lot of Arcanist stuff, so expanding might be hard). The acolytes are nice... but then I'd end up with Rasputina and the Ice Monster things, and then....
