Post by: SJM

So decided to start some Orks, slight warning I take a while to do anything.

This is my starting point-

1 box of Ork boyz, 1 box of Savage Orcs and one box of Savage Ork boar boyz. (incase anyone cries foul I also picked up a good value eBay auction of tons of 40k ork plastic bits.)

I'm in a couple of hours and this is my progress -

As you can see I'm mixing 40k Boyz and Savage Ork bits, also going for a few subtle bionics.

Close up -

Going for the less is more approach!

Next step is green stuff.

Thanks.

SJM

Done a little more work, I have decided to make 5 boyz at a time to work through the mountains of bits I seem to have accumulated.

Here is a little update of where I am at, these are at stage 1 I'd say, next step is a lot of green stuff work.

thanks.

Thanks! The Savage Orc set is really nice, only problem I am finding is, lovely models that they are, the body and legs, and in some cases arm(s) is one part. This limits options unless you don't mind taking a knife to them.... which luckily I do not

Cheers Squidbot.

Been working on a couple of boyz, which are affectionately named Chops and Rooster.

Modelling putty work on chops - Beard, flying jacket, Knee padded pants and a scar for his bionic eye.

I decided Rooster didn't need to much work, made an Ammo box for his shooter, and added a Shoulder pad and drilled out another bird skull and stuck it on.

I'm calling these two done, three more and I start some painting.

cheers.

Great work on these Orks. You're a brave, brave man wanting to do this much work on such a horde-army!

I've been painting, just about finished 'chops'

Sorry for loads of pictures, but he is a test model and wanted to get some documentation down.

I haven't painted Orks (or anything really) in a while so used him as practice.

Cheers.

Nice paint job! Your orks seem to have very good posture. The sculpting work is great, I really like the bearded boy. As a fellow ork builder I know you will be at this for a VERY long time. Hope you stick with it, your stuff looks great.

I like the Boy with the bionic left side!

Only thing I would suggest is to add a couple more rods in. You mention you are aiming for the less is more approach, but I can't help think if the Ork doesn't have at least two main "supports" in each half of the arm, it would just become loose and flop around!

Still, with a little work those Savage Orcs would make a great basis for some loopy Madboyz.

I had a little more time to throw some paint about, I have just about finished Rooster, his base still needs work. Thanks for the comments guys, I will be working some more on the 3 I haven't started painting yet, not totally sold on them yet. Was thinking about making 5 more, that's a full unit! wow dizzy, dizzy heights no less, but I digress -

Pictures!

Cheers!

Thanks for the comments guys.

I've been painting the Ork with his breathing apparatus, I thought he would be fairly simple but turned out quite the opposite - I tend to spend more time painting faces, with very little to work with I struggled to get this guy finished. Base needs doing but results below -

And a group shot of work so far... why not, fear my 21 points!

cheers.

Finally finished the Big shoota orc, he took ages, I think it was all the bullets! Also I had to sculpt a jaw piece to his mask as I realised his head was tiny! anyway, pics -

I really enjoy the coloring of your Orks. Most Orks I see look rather bland and plasticy to me ( they are made of plastic after all ) but there is something about your style that makes them seem more real to me.

Man you are really capturing the spirit of how I picture Orks with this army. If you don't mind me asking how long do these guys take you to paint?

I want to have an Ork army but I am such a slow painter I can't get past the number of models I need to produce.

I love these guys, you've done an amazing job!

@ Fireangel - Thanks! Don't be put off by Orks, they don't have to take forever, I'm just massively fussy! A model for me can take a few hours to an afternoon if it goes well, but like I said I'm very fussy and I have taken a day if I'm not happy(the big shoota ork for example, still not happy!).

@ The Good Green - thanks!

---

Was baby sitting the puppy so managed to get some paint on the Hunta and base coated the Nob.

I'm happy how this guy turned out, he has the Techo Feral look I seem to like

I really like your mix of savage ork bits. I think the mix makes them feel more orky to me than the usual shirts of the 40k ork bits if that makes sense

Thanks Rogue Wolves, I get what you mean I think , the savage Orcs are a little bit mono posed, but I really like them, plus they seem a little taller than the standard boy.

@ Warboss_Waaazag - Thanks, you have some mighty fine looking Orks yourself!

Small update, the Boss Nob is about half finished, but I decided to start a Runtherd to blast my army to the dizzy heights of two troop choices!

pics -

Very much WIP. I picked up an old metal Savage Orc command group, and thought he would make a good herder, he still needs a lot of work, but you get the idea where I am going. I tried to carve some symbols for his back banner.... It was meant to be a boar head..... think I'll attempt to save it during painting!!

Cheers.

those grotz are nice anl ight on the flesh tones, i had another look at the boyz with the bionics and thought that to improve the arm sections them selves as opposed to one piece of wire what about a slightly thicker one and a regular sized one, or even small fibre bundles.
keep up the good work

SJM's Workshop @ 2014/09/09 15:06:02

Post by: SJM

Thanks jonny5, I have acquired different sizes of metal rod, so I will attempt some of your advice after I work my way through Grots and Big gun.

Been chucking some paint about again, I've finished one of the Runtherds, well apart from the bases.

Pics -

And a few more of the herder, I've actually spotted some bits that need touching up.

One more herd to do, thenI'm making some big guns, the plan is to get all the Grot units done in one go.

I like the runtherd's converted bionik runt grabbin' arm. And I'm a huge fan of converted boss poles. Does your waaagh! have its own icon? I used to spend a lot of time of the WAAAGH! forum and all the big name modelers on that site would make a custom glyph for their armies and then plaster it on everything from bosspoles to vehicles. It doesn't have to be complicated, but it's a great way to unify your horde. Just a thought.

SJM's Workshop @ 2014/09/11 13:52:45

Post by: SJM

Hey Warboss_Waaazag, thanks for the comments, I love boss poles, I'm planning every boss to have his own personalised one. To begin with I was attempting to give every boy a back banner, however this quickly became a bad idea.

Interesting idea about the army Icon, I'll have to do a bit research but its certainly something I'll consider and would tie the army together, especially when I actually get some armour in.

cheers.

Everything you make looks like it could be part of a kill team size force and with the amount of detail on each model. Don't know how big your planning on making this but damm if this gets to a whole army stage, this is going to be one dam impressive force.
keep up the good work

Post by: Warboss_Waaazag

Nice! That's one way to go. Maybe because I am insane, I intend to make 15 of every mek gun option (clearly I am insane), but this works really well, too. Probably better than my idea, actually. Hmmm.

are those mek guns straight out the box? or was there some addisions-the lobba looks great

SJM's Workshop @ 2014/09/22 23:24:05

Actually Warboss_Waaazag your idea sounds awesome, you can never have enough big guns! KaBoomy!

@ jonny5 Alot of addition, Kannon and Zapp are from the Battlewagon, the lobba is mainly from Bomber left overs, the wheels are biker wheels, and the gun shield is custom and the turn table is a top off a oil barrel.

I have been working on the Mek gun unit, they need a little more work but here is the progress with the 5 gun carriages, the 4 with the turn tables are going to be the kannon/Zzap/lobbas.

Really didn't like the standard gun shield so that is where the main work has gone.

Thanks!

Hello all,

I've been doing some more work on the guns and crew. The guns are finished, magnetised and ready to be primed. Unfortunately I seem to have 1 Kannon and Zzap gun short but never mind, I hope I can pick them up in the future. Pics-

I also have been working on the crew, 10 out of 15 just about there, they need some modelling putty work and bases finished. pics-

I’m quite happy with this one, I made him his own little viewing platform and communications …errr thing. Pics –

Thanks for looking!

Great work! I don't know how this thread has escaped my attention until now. All those conversions...you're a more ambitious man than I. Love Rooster and the use of hair beyond the simple topknot that the odd boy has. Takes me back, that does.

I love this. Disappointed I'd somehow missed it up to this point.

Also like that someone else is playing with more "upright" Orks like the ones I'm in the process of converting. They really do get an entirely different kind of menace once they're not so comically hunched over with their heads sticking out of their chests.

WOW. This is amazing, brilliant work. The conversions and the painting are both stellar. I love this thread! Please, keep them coming; I can't wait to see more.

The boyz have so much flavor and character and originality. That nob with the boar head is just wicked.

The painting is very interesting. You use a lot of tones and shades that you don't often see on Orks with light blues and purples and pinks. You have a much more artistic knack for colors than most of us could ever hope for and you are brave enough to use non-traditional colors on your Orks and it makes them even more unique and original.

You've definitely inspired me. I was not really looking forward to painting another batch of regular Ork boyz, but converting and painting something like this would be great fun.

I do not.. but they were common in the 2nd edition ( If i remember this correctly ).. I game most of all my old ork stuff away so I don't have any boars. I do have a local player that uses them as bikes.

I love the way the Cyboars are shaping up, SJM! I especially like the fact you've used a ton of old pewter bits. I still prefer so many of the old bitz (the Brian Nelson era Nobz and in particular the shoota you've used on your Cyboar Nob).

I've been wanting to do a feral Ork detachment for my greenskins for ages... Does anyone remember an old WD from around 2001 that had a Feral Ork army list? It was packed with Squiggoths and the like which, at the time, was mind-blowing!

Excellent.. Can you put a normal Ork next to it to show the size comparison ( if indeed you actually have a normal ork ).

Might be a good frame size to do a conversion for Ghazzy or a Big mek .

Awesome idea and superbly executed very imposing and works very effectively, just one question where are the metal claws, cabling and tanks from that you used ?

I am thinking Inquisitor pieces ?

Thanks for the comments, to be honest I didn't realise how big they would be, they were cheap in a bits store so picked them up quickly .

@lone dirty dog - Cables are from metal Killa Kans. Claws are indeed from an Inquisitor model called Krieger Krash Thrax I had sitting about. No idea about the tanks/backpacks - found them in my bits box.

That said, I'm hoping to get a couple of my stock Mega Nobz painted up by the end of the month too. They're literally the only unconverted models I have in my army which pained me before but now especially so given how awesome yours have turned out!

Hello everyone,

I've been painting over the weekend, I've managed to finish one of the Mega nobs so I'd thought I would share. This guy was difficult to paint, I had to get my brush at all sorts of silly angles to get at the detail, anyway, pics -

Also a look into the future! I picked this boyz up from all over, but mainly from a car boot sale quite cheaply, I intend to convert them into a big unit of shoota boyz which im quite looking forward too... just need to finish the Cyboars, Mega Nobs and the Gorkamorka unit first, pic-

Cheers for looking!

Sweet job with the Meganob. You really packed in the detail without making it too crowded. Do I spot some limited edition Orcs in that pile o' pewter?

Post by: SJM

Thanks youidiotkid, well yes you do! Theres a gamesday Orc warboss and the 2 Orc radiers I believe they were called? I found them in a big eBay lot covered in far to much paint, I had to strip the Orc with a pig twice... by hey, he has a pig so its worth it right?

Subbed

Some really inspiring stuff in here SJM, love the stormfiends as MANz, currently turning some into DE talos, but it is truly a wicked kit, I may just have to scavenge some bits for the orks! (I keep my army bitz separate.... else they'd all simply become ork loot!).

Very slim NidLifeCrisis!! , Yes I maybe haven't thought this through to be honest, my Warboss will either have to be massive if I follow the same suit.

Good stuff Solar Shock, I'll have to check that out, the Storm Fiend kit really lends itself to many conversion paths.

Thanks for the comments!

Yeah, I think I might be a little disappointed if the Warboss isn't a gargantuan monster of a greenskin that can krush da pinkies under 'is boots, tear up a Beakie with 'is bare 'ands and smash up one of dem 'Drednorts' with an 'eadbutt!

Post by: SJM

Yea, I think I've dug a hole for my self Paradigm, I was given a Grumlok and Gazbag model - was planning to make him into a Warboss, but he may not cut it....

So options are, upgrade the mega nobs to warboss, making Grumlok really nasty looking, or I dunno... stick him on a Squiggoth and see who argues with him

Actually, it would be kind of awesome to have a rather weedy Ork(or even Grot) in a suitably massive walker-suit-throne, kind of like an Orky Inquisitor Karamazov. Then have the massive MANZ acting as a bodyguard for 'the Little Big Guy'. "You want ta get to da boss, you gotta go throo uz!"

Or, extend the Cyboar theme to a Cyber-squiggoth mount for the boss! That could be cool.

YEH! I second a grot warboss! he's the true kunnin' but brutal

Not trying to hijack, but grots do make great MANz, I have had an 'inquisitor' grot idea in mind for ages, add loads of scrolls and books and relics! Give him some grots with robo wings as cherubs, weighted down by his big gunz!
My grot MANz

Post by: NidLifeCrisis

Ha ha! I love these suggestions! While a monstrous Warboss on a snarling behemoth of a Cyboar is always appealing, I reckon the grot in a massive suit could also be awesome. I've personally been considering having an (frankly ridiculous) attempt at converting a Bloodthirster into a Warboss Tuska (newly-escaped from the Warp), but I'm still discounting it as madness for now..

SJM - Pure, solid gold, my friend. You've outdone even your high standards with this one. This meganob is utterly epic. I wish I had better adjectives to describe it. The scale of the conversion along with your unique and excellent painting style make this guy stand out as one of the coolest models I've seen this year. You continue to set the bar for the rest of us... and keep it far out of reach of most of us!

Thanks for the inspiration. I've started converting a few of my own Tankbustas that are heavily influenced by this blog, just not nearly as good (link in my signature).

I've been planning a Painboy/boss sometime now and couldn't look at the bitz sitting about any longer! So here is Gutjaw and his assistant Orko. pics -

Thanks guys, recipe? Err, I'll give it a go, my bitz box is very random mostly from random ebay wins... I think its as follows -

Big mek with boss pole - Body.

Orc shaman on boar - Head.

Savage Orc Shaman - Pointing arm

Ork Nob Waaagh banner - Staff pole

Wurrzag Orc Shaman on boar - Staff head

Orc Raider - Backpack/barrel.

and some green stuff I think that's it, for Orko I beheaded an old night goblin for a new grot head and some green stuff work.

Cheers, hope this helps!!

Hey everyone,

I've been doing a little painting on the cyboars, the remaining 4 have some paint on but no where near finished. I've also been tempted again by the big Shoota mob and I've made this guy -

I've always liked this model but I couldn't really see a way to convert him too much, so a bit of equipment on his back and a feather or two and he is done. I really wanted him to have a big axe but I couldn't find a way, so I turned his little Grot friend into some sort of Ammo box weapon rack thing.

Thanks for looking.

He counts as a Big Mek on a bike with a KFF. I wanted to support the model by the Grot hanging on to the side rail but it was very unstable so I added an oil leak which will provides extra support, it doesn't look much yet but hopefully painted up it will look more oily.
