GMM's Compiled Completed Commission and Display Showcase (1/9 Hotline Heresy - A Grey Knights Army) @ 2014/05/12 17:32:00

Post by: GMMStudios

Hey everyone!

My name is Brandon, also known as GMM. I have been meaning to make a new thread for a long time - my old WIP Blog thread ended up being more of a finished showcase thread anyway, but I ended up not using it because I would often instead just give each army it's own thread. So what I would like to do is get a new thread going, and slowly build it up with the recent work I have done. This way it is tidier, and in the showcase forum where it really should be by rules. I will try and be respectful to the forum and not post too often, but it will take quite a while at an army per post to get everything up here. So, thanks for your understanding and patience! I hope you enjoy my armies!

For inquiries - gmmstudios@gmail.com

I will start out with my most recent work as of making this thread, which was for Adepticon 2014, then go backwards into commissions.

Follow this link for more images!

Spoiler:

Thanks for checking out my thread, and until next time!

I really like the idea of a consolidated thread, my only thought is you may want to limit the number of pictures per army once you get several in here, too make it easier to load / view / scroll through.

Yeah, definitely. I will probably post 1-3 max of something that there are a lot of. If there are 100 tac marines maybe just show the 5 images of 5 with sargeant. Things like that. Then link to the blog.

Alright, here's another army. This time one I just finished! A large Admech army that uses the Tau rules. Features a custom display board with LEDs and a tablet for a billboard that plays an animated nameplate.

Hope you like! For more images, please click here.

Thanks guys!

Going back to this past Adepticon, here is the 40k display I made for the convention.

For more pics, here is the blog post!

Every year I do a large scale project for Adepticon, a convention in early April in Chicago IL. This year I did two! This is the 40k display. If you are interested in any of the WIP images, I have them all on Facebook my Blog , and a blog here on Dakka.

The title "Memento In Utero" is latin for "remember, in the womb." It is a snapshot of the horrific memories the Emperor's Scythes retain of the initial attack of Hive Fleet Kraken, which almost wiped them out. At the birth of the Tyranids, was the death of the Scythes. But it is also a literal image of the few existing "Salvation Teams" - small groups of hardened veterans that have no home, but wander the galaxy fighting the Tyranids in some of the most terrible places imaginable. Kraken and the Scythes' destinies are completely entangled in every sense - time, mortality, beginning to end.

There are also other subtle themes. The birth and regret of something created which ultimately takes life. The Tyranids may have been a created weapon, something designed to kill in a controlled manner, which ultimately had a much bigger impact than the creators could imagine. They may have been an experimental weapon gone awry. An experiment aborted in every sense that takes a life of it's own and changes the destiny of man.

The display itself is based on an egg chair. I havent measured it, but I am about 5'11'' (almost two meters for the metric folks? Average male height) and I stand eye to eye with the skull. The chair is not only an original but a pre-production prototype model from the original design. This made it not great as a chair - no cushion and a large mold line, but for me it was perfect and that gave it an extra bit of story. The inside is all scratch built out of various parts. and you can find tons of images in building it on links above. I have many WIP images of it bare and being built. There are so many parts and types of materials used it is impossible to list them all, but in the images they are fairly easy to identify. I tried to avoid actual 40k parts as much as possible, unless they were from more obscure FW kits such as the Thunderhawk and the Titans. I did not want any parts to be instantly recognizable. I could go on and on about the how it was built, but really all the images in the WIP tell it so much better.

But let's get on to the pictures!

Spoiler:

Here is the gif that plays on the tablet. It will probably play very slow or very fast. For some reason it does not play the same speed on anything and I had to tweak it for hours to get it to play right on the tablet. I am sorry if it makes it annoying or hard to read!

Until next time!

The dark display board lends a sinister look to the army. Given how you expanded on the lore, it fits perfectly.

Quick request: in your threads, would you be willing to put the pictures inside a spoiler tag? It seems to let my computer load the page a little easier, and I won't have to sit around waiting for my screen to resolve all the pictures that I've already oohed, aahed, and marveled at. That means I'll be able to get to the new mini-porn as quickly as possible!

In this update: the first of the "Showcase: Showdown" series of images, where I simply just have a bit of fun with painted armies and terrain. Whenever I make an army I try and imbue it with a lot of action and energy in the posing, so sometimes it's fun to continue that into a big diorama of these models fighting. The root of all Warhammer enjoyment for me goes back to playing with toys, so there are many similarities to the attitudes I have towards having fun with Warhammer.

Yeah, um, I need to win the lottery so I can send all my armies to you. I've looked at your website in the past when I've toyed with the idea of commissioning an army, but saw nothing like this on your site.
What you have, sir, is talent. Not merely the results of practice or dedication.
Have you considered creating a video or tutorial showing how you paint a model?

Thanks! I have a DVD out with coolmini already. A terrain one is coming out soon as well.

Was it the old site? A couple years ago I flipped how I do everything on its head. It's not about efficiency/dollar anymore it's just pure "if I can imagine it I am going to make it"

Haven't looked back.

Hey everyone,

Going back in time to the last commission I did this year in January, I have some N'Dras sept Tau.

I loved painting this army and am very proud of it, because the customer gave me free reign and had no idea the scheme I was doing. I chose the colors based on where he was from and from what I gathered of his personality. He loved the army and said that while he couldn't have imagined the color palette himself, that an evergreen sort of color was one color he was imagining but did not want to influence me with. Success!

Not to slight anything else you have done, but those Phantoms are epic to the max, times 9000. I was wondering when somebody (you, the client, the interwebs) was going to use the not-hippogriffs as mounts for a Marine army, and there they are.

Awesome.

Yes those are Empire mounts from the Fantasy range, given Marine riders. No actual conversion to the birds themselves, the riders are completely separate.

Your photos are great, the scenic feel really brings the miniatures alive, been seeing them allover the place for years. It would be nice to see close ups of these miniatures with a bland background too though, so one could also see the paintjob clearly.

It's quite crazy how you have the drive to do these huge projects ( or just clients that are willing to pay more than what one is usually offered for comissions, atleast in my country lol ) because they must take thousands of hours.

Thanks! Whenever I do these, they are always after the "official" post of the army. So if you go back a bit you can find this army and its traditional closeups.

Not thousands. I dont think even my Adepticon projects have hit 1000 hours. But that is how I can make it affordable to a few more people than celebrities I paint very fast.

That is easily the best display of 40k miniatures I've ever seen, bar none. And a spectacularly impressive army too!

Is that something you did for the customer, or did you just want to do something cool and fun with the models before you shipped them out?

Hey all!

Have a new army up, this time a Chaos Marine army based around Sons of Malice. It's full of really cool old out of print models, and old chassis Rhinos.

This actually isn't a commission, but a paint job for a local friend who did some work for me. He wasn't too particular, so I went with a bit of a fall look, and decided to go all out with the weathering on the vehicles. The models are old, and honestly rather plain without it, so the quartering and weathering brings them up to date and they can now rock with the newer models.

A lot of cool stuff coming up. Some more appropriately Fall themed armies, as well as posts on starting up Adepticon projects. Stay tuned!

About a week per 2-3000 points, but it really depends, and it also depends on if I am working on anything else at the time.

Actual sand and weathering powders.

Actual sand, huh. Didn´t expect it to look so fine ( small particles ) on small scale models. Is it like sand you´ll just find outside or some grinded/fined down stuff? Any spesifics regarding the powders and how you used them?

Play sand from the hardware store (as opposed to the beach or construction sand) is actually very fine.

However I am from the USA and cannot say how easy that will be for you to find.

The best thing to do is just test and see what you like.

What is it with October and piggy models around here? I'm not complaining. These are some of the best models I have painted in a while. I really like the large open areas of armor and flesh. The sculpts just have a lot of great character.

In case you didn't know, these are Wrath of Kings models from the House Teknes faction. If you go to a demo table for the game at a Cool Mini booth (which I have, and it's a fun skirmish game) watch for these guys! There are three other equally interesting factions in the game, which will be rolling through here in the future as well.

Also as you may be aware, I am almost strictly a Games Workshop painter, but I will be adding this game to the roster for available painting as well as a new gallery to the site. I have been wanting to expand for a while, and this was a great opportunity to.

Oh, and hope you like the new backdrop. Had a spark of inspiration and had to throw that together this weekend. I did not have a proper fantasy themed backdrop.

Enjoy!

You are absolutely right. Those buildings were made to complement an existing army, not general photography. In fact, the army in the first post of this thread.

A special treat this time around, not something you see every day. This army is 100% comprised of Titan Forge undead Orcs and Goblins. Amazing sculpts and one of the most fun armies I have ever painted. They have a lot of old school character, and I channeled a lot of my love for older games such as Ultima Online into the palette.

In case you are new around here, I often run contests on social media for...well, whatever you want! This lucky winner on Instagram chose a Knight in Gerantius colors. I took that and made it a bit unique, with some damage, missing face plate, and added some checkers.

These models are not so intimidating once you paint a dozen of them, and the top and shoulder plates are a lot of fun to do a lot of blending and shading on. Looking forward to the four Terryn Knights I have lined up for next fall.

Hey all!

Very excited for this update - a new Space Hulk set! It seems to be tradition around here that by chance once a year about the same time I get a Space Hulk in the schedule. I am always happy to oblige as the models are wonderful, and the Tyranid skin is always hand mixed and a good exercise in color matching.

I took the opportunity to have a little fun with the title images. This isn't really an army, so regular terrain wouldn't do. It seemed fitting to display the game in the appropriate setting - a dimly lit room with drinks and snacks, in the middle of a game. I hope you enjoy the images as much as I did painting the models and setting them up.

Hey all!

I recently ran a couple of Twitter giveaways for people that followed. I enjoy full armies and that is one reason I do them exclusively, but the prizes are a nice change of pace to do a big model. Let's face it, anyone given the choice of any GW model painted to their specifications is going to pick a large model!

The color scheme is to match his existing army. It is cream for the animals, and green with yellow accents on the troops. The wings were done in solid white to match his demigryphs, with a bright orange behind to throw in some nice color. Very proud of this prize and looking forward to the winner's reaction!

Thanks!

I prefer cinematic and atmospheric backgrounds to the traditional solid curve. Lots to look at is a small price to pay to feel like you are looking at another place, rather than a model in a box. I am still working on it as I used to use a light box and still have to for some things, but it's a fun journey figuring that out.

Oh, that's very nice. I love that it's not a scheme you ever see. It's very striking and the depth of color is excellent.

I also like that you didn't airbrush it: many of the Nagashes I've seen use airbrushed OSL effects that are very poorly executed.

Thanks!

My only issue with too much airbrush, is that when I look at a model I want to see it and it's character first. With airbrush if it is used too much I just see airbrushing first, not the model.

The threshold is about 25% airbrushing before it is too much and you really don't save any more time if you know what you are doing. It is very good for setting up colors and saving drying time in the beginning.

Another issue, is even when an airbrushed model is absolutely perfect and smooth, you still have to have a lot of paintbrush work for it to not look artificial. The odd thing is REALLY well done mini airbrushing, when done exclusively on a model, actually ends up looking like bad CGI. It has very little character. You have to go back in and add character by hand regardless.

Hand painting has imperfections and its not PERFECT smooth. This is what gives it character. Look at any model Jim Wappel paints and it is done with a fat filbert brush and has imperfections. But they look realistic as all hell, and gorgeous.

It's refreshing to hear a professional say this. An airbrush is just another tool in the toolbox for painters. But a lot of commission painters use it as their go-to, default, ezmode button, and for those that lean on it too heavily, it really shows. I wouldn't disparage a skilled hand with an airbrush, but there are a lot of guys using airbrushes on EVERYTHING right now, and quite a lot of it looks lazy.

Thats because it is fast. Fast = more dollars per hour. Most of these painters front load their painting. They spend about an hour airbrushing a riptide, then another hour or two doing some stark edge highlighting and really poppy effects. To your average Joe who doesn't paint, until they see enough of these, and enough models side by side, and enough models in hand, will they notice the difference. It's like catchy music. To people who make music, and people who like music, they know the deal. It isn't until people hear it enough they understand it's all front end.

There is a massive influx of commission painters right now. This is (mostly, but not completely) due to the current airbrush wave that is going on with the hobby. As your average customer's palette becomes more refined this will fade. As cliche as it may be, it is a bubble.

I used to be a little bit like this too. While I have never once figured up what I make per hour, or how many hours a project has taken me, I used to be more concerned with cost and time. Anymore I just do what I enjoy and have fun. I do my best, within reason, and the reward is getting very excited about taking pictures and higher demand. Not trying to get every dollar out of every hour now. The past three years my end product has increased so much I do not feel it is tooting my own horn to say it blows away what I was doing in 2011, and what I was doing then is the norm now. Shedding that attitude allowed me to improve like this.

Its only refreshing because I am the only one saying it. I am the only one saying it because my plan involves improving, staying ahead of the curve and always striving to be the best overall package. I am not about getting by.

As a disclaimer this is not to say it is bad painting. That is all subjective and if a person puts their effort into something, then to me it is good. There are always those threads on here even, that you open and the painting is very amateur, but those people try hard, it is their first model, and that to me still makes it a good model in that light. What I am addressing in this post is this concern of painters doing effects to speed up painting that trade substance for speed in the professional setting.

And with that I am off to paint some Death Korps.

Thanks guys!

New set I just finished for you all - Death Korps of Krieg! This is the infantry half, inspired by the army I did way back in 2009 or so. I was really excited to take this on, as it allowed me to revisit that army and scheme and see what I could do with all I had learned since then, and brought my painting level up quite a bit. The main differences you will note are the sharper blue, and the hand blended rather than airbrush tan/orange of the greatcoats. Really proud of how this army turned out, and excited to see the clients response as I am sure he was fully expecting the level of paint from before.
Until next time!

Thank you!

Just keep practicing, all it takes

While I have been painting professionally for many years now, in 2012 I changed everything about how I viewed painting and the services I provide. Realizing this is what I want to do for as long as possible, I stopped caring about time and ultra efficiency and simply focused on doing my best, enjoying painting, and the excitement of finishing my best work.

I love painting. My posts are always short because I would rather be painting than typing. Sometimes the thought enters my mind to do a blog series on how much I enjoy my work and why, but then I end up painting something. This celebratory post will have to do for now. So here's to 2015, and if I am very lucky another one in 365 days.

Safe and happy New Year to all!

Its actually a custom mix of black and white. We wanted a pure neutral grey and that is the best option for it. I am actually working on a smaller veteran detachment force for that army right now which will be up early next week. In the middle of doing the grey right now.

If people have questions about paint, I am always more than happy to answer. I custom mix a lot of colors on the fly, so it isn't always an easy or straight answer, but I will try.

They are Dragon Forge Designs. Most of what I paint ends up on Jeffs bases. I dont charge extra for resin bases unless more elaborate, and unless a customer has an existing brand and line in mind I recommend his bases. Other brands are good, but I know him personally and hes a really good guy and a solo businessman and I try and help him out. Micro art and Secret Weapon also make great bases.

About a year ago I did a massive Dusk Raiders army with a Reaver and about a company's worth of models. This is a "small" addition to that army, themed around an existing veteran force. It's all the fun toys the basic army didn't have..since they didn't exist.

I really like painting split color infantry. To many it might seem tedious, but the pop that comes with it is worth it, definitely. The next Marine army on the table is split colors as well. See you then!

The color schemes you choose to paint always have this incredible way of popping, looking very vivid.

Is part of your process choosing colors that compliment and pop, or does your paint technique make all color schemes pop?

I guess this change had to be made to separate yourself from the other airbrush artists?

You used to do an army a week, do you find it take you longer now that you've changed your philosophy?

Do you think eye protection is necessary when airbrushing?

Someone who does something for 36 hours has no interest in quitting. Just being thankful.

It's just a natural progression. To improve means going more micro in technique. Airbrush has a very low ceiling for how high the quality can be. It can look amazingly smooth but beyond that to add character and fine quality you're using a brush. Airbrush is awesome for saving time though, and I use it to basecoat and do some initial shading. Thinking about it, I don't really airbrush vehicles that much less than I used to, I just take it a whole lot further after.

And yes I used to paint an army a week. But I realized around 2012 there was no way to improve that, and the grind of trying to keep that up was nothing rewarding compared to doing my best. I did try hard with the knowledge I had then, but the quality today is 10x better for only about 2-3x slower.

Sorry I missed this before.

It is a bit of both. On the macro level I try and work a customer's existing idea as much as possible, and then at the micro level as I am sifting through boxes of paint I am considering color contrast and palette.

I choose and mix a lot of colors on the fly and this is a good bit of the character my armies have. A lot of painters have hangups with sticking to an existing scheme, whats on the box, or "what color is that?" instead of just trusting their gut.

Someone famous once said, always trust your gut!

This is also a bit of an unsung hero that usually isn't seen 100% unless I were to paint two armies side by side to show it. You can always feel it but it's often hard to put a finger on, but it's always worth it. For example with the Dusk Raiders if I were to do a straight black and white and solid basecoaed the red they would not have any of that cel shaded rich look.

Vroom vroom! I hope you like bikes, because here's a whole bunch!

A very challenging army to paint, but also very rewarding. I enjoy split color schemes simply because I get a kick out of making that last line highlight that divides the colors perfectly. It also just looks great.

The client was after a Slamanders army using what is traditionally a White Scars batch of models (including Khan). What I did was split the army down the middle white and green, making sure to balance the green with the white, which is tricky and very important. The shoulder pads are my favorite decision we came up with. They help balance both sides and solved the issue of emblem colors. Best of all that mix-up of coloring translated very, very well to the vehicles.

And let's call another dead on the pavement. Up next, Tau before starting the Throne!

The only problem with the way you display those armies, is the client will eventually get that and think "well........ it's not as awesome as that epic picture was"

Oh even on a plain kitchen table, that first image would be pretty impressive The terrain is actually pretty plain, other than some signage and depth to the shading. This is why I do not use GW terrain, it would certainly be too busy.

I have never once had that complaint, and usually the first email upon opening the package is that they look better than the photos on an individual level.

I understand your logic though, but it isn't the case.

The white looks fantastic. Do you start with a white base and use a black/dark gray glaze to build up the shadow?

Thanks and take care.

Sure. Here is how I did the white. It was the last large color step.

Basecoat solid medium gray (custom mix)
Light wash of brown/black mix to help me see lines and add a bit of depth.
Highlight lighter grey
Highlight even lighter grey
Lining step to define plates, clean up lines, and add damage
Final pure white highlight and blending

Green is done the same, but with the lining a bit further back.

Well thank you!

"Cinematic" is definitely an aesthetic I strive for in my painting and photography. I am glad people feel they give off that vibe. Really I just enjoy taking pictures of models, so the more I learn about photography and film the more I add to the look of the pictures.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback!

This is a heavily resculpted Reaver Titan, built for a client specifically to use in the Adepticon Titan battle this year (although, it was more of an excuse to!). At the time back when I built the Titan, I shared my ideas for something cherub-like, as well as the notion of a character Titan, and he gave me full artistic licence and freedom to make something unique. It would be a complete surprise.

The unveiling was wonderful. Spare blanket covering this toddler shaped thing, walking through a horde of another unrelated convention that was ending, I met the client in the hotel lobby by the fireplace and uncovered to his surprise. "It's a boy!" No cigars were smoked, but he was so excited we walked it over to the bar where some pals were relaxing and they all had a round of oogling the Titan before it was shuffled off to bed. It needed it's rest for the big day!

The actual battle was a success. The Titan drew a crowd and it practically won it for the good side, coming out victorious in it's first game. There was of course, much celebration.

When I set out to build the Titan I knew I wanted something angelic and child-like, with a twist of Gothic and disturbing. The notions of something that is normally beautiful and kind dark and disturbing are two contrasting ideas that work very well together. Inspirations from Bayonetta creatures, the sunrise of Anor Lando, and the grit of Blade Runner all rolled into one freakishly beautiful and imposing machine.

Interested in your own character model that is uniquely yours? Contact me, and let's see what we come up with!

It's not so much a cel shade effect, although I can see why it gives you that impression. It's more that you don't often see vehicles hand blended so it has a lot of pop.. Starting with a bright basecoat, and then shading several times and highlighting several times allows you to control the lighting very precisely.

Skimask Mohawk wrote:

Watched. That was good, thank you. I usually prefer to watch a let's play before I watch the runners, but I hadn't found one yet. This clears a lot up and he was a good host.

And yes, if I can manage to find time there will definitely be a nightmare headstone themed photo backdrop.

"You would prefer another target? Then name the system! I grow tired of asking this so it will be the last time: *Where* is the rebel base?" - Rogal Dorn interrogates an Emperors Children prisoner.

This year's Adepticon charity army had some hiccups with logistics. I received the army in time to get it painted to what I would be happy to photograph, but the donator of the checker cutting board was not able to get it to me until actually at the con. Luckily, the winner was very kind to allow me to take the army home, give the army itself about a week's more brush time, and build the display board and bases I had originally envisioned.

The display is heavily influenced by Yavin 4, the moon base of the rebel forces in A New Hope. There was always something additionally endearing about the valiant Rebel army holding up in this ancient ruin, beautiful but in decay, more so than any other location direction-wise would provide. Throwing Fulgrim and companies' background of the pretty but tragic on top seemed natural, no pun intended.

Haha thanks Stormwall. I am used to it being a bit quiet, this thread is almost a year old and while I post new stuff pretty often, most everyone who sees it and wants to post has before, unless they are new. So I understand I know people enjoy it regardless of replying or not.

Red Corsair wrote:Your style seems to be shifting more and more towards a James Wappel look. Very nice!

Anymore most of what I do is using a similar style. I airbrush the solid main color in a medium tone then shade several times and highlight several times. I like his work more than anyone because of his approach, the look it has, and I see the character of the model and painting before I see *how* it was painted. Seeing the technique used before I even see the model bothers me more as my own style changes.

SJM wrote:Nicely done, I'm not mad on the colours tbh, seem a little washed out. But still fantastic stuff.

I wrote a response, then realized I had already said it all, and better (maybe I just had coffee?) in a reply to someone who said the same thing on the blog:

"I definitely agree. Part of it is the lighting. Overcast day out in the woods, the pictures are going to be a bit darker in the details and blend stuff together. That was a sacrifice I made in doing the atmospheric photography. Part of me wanted to also add additional "traditional" shots, but I figured I would leave this to have the atmospheric charm it has, even if it makes it a bit harder to see the details. That decision was also influenced by what it was intended for. My Adepticon projects and anything for charity I tend to try and push it a bit more than I would with a commission. They are usually a "sum of its parts" project. Most of my big displays the army and display are one in the visual sense. For commissions on the other hand, it is very important that the army is the showpiece and the background is simply there to help add a bit of story and an interesting and entertaining backdrop. The army and individual models are the product, my city terrain is just the window dressing."

So I agree with you.

chrisyella wrote:Purple and green, match made in heaven.. Great work !

Good afternoon, friends. Here is an army commission I just finished for your viewing pleasure. This time a Tau infantry force with a little bit of everything; lots of Forge World and suit conversions are included. The scheme is simple but powerful, with the contrast between the blue and the basing as well as the multiple brown natural tones hand shaded into all of the grey.

Very happy with how these turned out, continuing the effort to push the bleeding edge of my own skill with each new army. Already excited for the next one, and if you are interested in reaching out for an army project just drop me a line!

Wonderful painting, as we've come to expect! I'm sure the owner must be over the moon

The scenery you use to give your armies a sense of narrative and place is spectacularly well-finished, too. Do you mind if I ask how you went about making the brickwork pieces in the images between the air caste (tanning salon) shot and the ethereal caste shot?

Frazetta is a huge influence on how I paint Fantasy models. My Aunt who was an amazing oil painter, collected fantasy art books and Calandars en masse, the latter of which many are hanging in my paint room today. They often solve an artistic block with a quick glance over my shoulder. "Oh, right, that's the color I was looking for."

So when this client showed me this list of big gribbly monsters and told me to go wild, that is what I did, drawing in all I have learned about that vibrant style and my practice from past armies such as the Adepticon Fantasy throne army. Add in some hand made over-the-top bases, and you've got a force straight off a fantasy epic book cover.

Thank you! That is actually just a white basecoat and a single green color. Trick is lots of shading/lining with the green over and over in the recesses, less and less each time.

You are seriously beyond talented. Every time I see one of your whole-army shots I'm just blown away by how gorgeous everything is. I know you've said you think anyone could get as good as you with enough practise, but I think someone could spend tens of thousands of hours honing their skills and still never come close to the speed and quality you manage.

I do have a question about your service also. I saw you mentioned on your site that you like talking about schemes and army ideas. If I contact you with ideas that I have but know I probably won't be able to commission for a couple of years, am I wasting your time? I'd hate to distract you from real painting but it would be awesome to toss some ideas around and get an idea of how much i'll have to save.

Nah, just having fun. Thrasher magazine style design has been a favorite over the years. Any time other design influences can be brought in, and have a miniatures/painting/work excuse to do so I try and find the time.

As I always say, a break for a workaholic is more work, only spontaneous.

An army of Legion of the Damned and a custom chapter, the blue portion of this army was used for the Adepticon team tournament, then the Legion sent to me after the convention. The teal works well contrasted with the orange-gold not only on the solid marines, but as an accent on the Legion. Having not seen many Legion alternatives, doing something slightly different was very appealing. While the standard scheme of red flames will always be the go-to, this is a solid alternative that stands well on it's own, even without the teal marines they were to blend in with.

Up next - work in earnest on the Deadpool Imperial Guard army, a Dread Suarian, and two new photography backdrops. Both based on video game level design - one Overpass from Counter Strike, the other Bloodborne with some absolutely insane Gothic windows by Ironheart Artisans, both in size and complexity. Summer is here and that means sunshine and big projects outdoors. See you then.

A lizard to defy physics, this Dread Saurian was painted to match the client's taste in real lizards - a shimmering, polychromatic predator going from teal blue to yellow. Quite a challenging model to paint due to size and the sheer number of scales, but what fun would it be if it were easy.

Up next - finishing the Deadpool army, two new terrain photo booths (images coming soon) and plenty beyond. See you then.

Thats some lovely colours going on there from the lizard to the gold.

Excellent base as well, those fern type plants look really good.

Thanks guys! It was fun to paint, and a good excuse to use the muggy weather and scenery.

Lots going on around here at once, hope to have a lot of different WIP pics up soon.

Several massive projects in the works, here, there and generally taking over the place as they do in summertime. Unusual for me to go more than a few weeks without an update, so here are some pretty pictures of a couple recent commissions going at it for the time being.

Also need to officially announce I will be at Gencon 2015 in Indianapolis! At the Cool Mini booth again, I am working on a display similar to the Marienburger for their new Rum and Bones board game being released at the event. As always come and say hello if you are going!

Until next time,

Is it wrong that my favourite thing in that photo is the shipping containers?

Have I just been working in logistics for too long...?

(Nice work all around, though )

I love shipping containers. They are great space fillers, and have maximum horizontal space for models while increasing height. They also just look good

Hot out of the galley, here is the official display/demo table for Rum and Bones, a board game of ship to ship combat by CoolMiniorNot for Gencon 2015 in Indianapolis.

The display is built from an old trunk, inside of which a second 5" deep tray holds the three gallons of clear resin and two boats. The ships are 100% scratch built from foam, clay, plastic stock, and a few animal bones. The surface is 1:1 the scale of the game boards, and fully playable.

The display collapses fully. Tray sinks into box, sails remove, and all goes within the box, lid returned to it's proper place.

Going to Gencon? Stop by and say hello. I will be there all weekend helping to demo the game and chit-chatting my voice away as usual.

Wow thats totally amazing, you've done another fine master piece.

GMM, I will have to go to Gencon just to see your work sometime.

I don't suppose you descend from the heavens and explain how you did the water to us peasants learning to make ocean bases?

Bases I have not messed with much. For the display my biggest "secret" is I actually play in the resin with a stick quite a bit to make it look more like foamy, moving water.

Gencon 2015 was even better than the last. Thanks first of all to Cool Mini for having me there. I like to think of them all as close friends now, and I always look forward to spending time with all of them, both at the booth and trolling around town at 4 am. I made a lot of memories this year, most of which I owe to my friends at CMoN.

I spent most of the day cosplaying as the worst pirate there. The hat I bought last minute didn't fit my head, so I had to buy one on site. Lucky me if there was a place to buy a pirate hat within a five state radius, it was the hall I was standing in. Great fun to talk to folks that came up to the booth. The boats were a massive hit with both people who knew of the game, and those that had not yet but loved to see something interesting. The biggest honor was watching people jogging to a Thursday morning exclusive release actually stop to take a picture. Thank you to everyone who may be reading this for your kind words, encouragement, and interest in the display. My voice is only now recovering but that is a small price to pay to meet so many hundreds of kind people.

Incredible stuff!

I pulled a few of you images to my desktop as inspiration and a guide for projects for me in the future (simple things you do so well such as the windows on flyers, holes in buildings, your bridge and of course your miniature painting).

Congratulations on brilliant work!
