Hi all, Ive been inspired, like so many others by all the awesome stuff that goes on in all these forums. At the moment me and a friend are working towards a campaign, probably based on the Necromunda ruleset. Most of the minis here will probably be for that and other future projects. Some Mordhiem as well I imagine. Anyway here they are:

Members of the Adeptus Arbites

And some wip terrain

You are off to a nice start. The arbites are looking great.

I'm subbed.

Excited to see more

So darn gritty! Love it!

All three of those models fit very snug into the inqusi-munda universe, and are painted great. Cool terrain also, keep us updated =)

Grimdark is spot on. The terrain look just what I thought the underive should look like in the domes.

Cor! Lovely stuff here – I'll be a keen subscriber.
If you're still on the lookout for craquelure across a large area, then another option is inks. Any will do; Winsor & Newton Artists' inks (available online or from most art shops) will work well and come in a range of colours.

This'll be more resilient than other options, and far more affordable. If you're using it for terrain, you'll need to get as smooth a surface as you can – a layer of PVA would work well as the base. Once done, pour on the ink liberally, then aim to dry it as quickly as possible – doing it outside in direct sunlight on a hot still day would be ideal.

Here are some more very WiP pics. Work on the terrain has ground to a halt while i wait for more resources, mainly a chance to get the GW battle fiield debris kit.

First a mechanicum Magos:

Next a sister of battle, who will be the personal bodyguard of an member of the ecclesiary

The dealer in scrap, gubbins and technology of almost orkoid awefulness Ignatius Frei.

Post by: Grag

Scrazza: Thanks, and thanks for friending me
Talassar: Im not really sure, i guess i just like the fact that making humans into possesions captures 40ks feeling brilliantly. I can kind of imagine dealers selling lives with out a thought that these servants where once actual living people. Certainly the/us whites did it with african slaves . I can imagine crowds coming to see the latest servitors, each packed into its crate or brought out to show off, a bit like the roman slave markets as well. Originally the servitor was going to be used as part of the scrap dealers stall. It didn't work out so i guess ill just use it as part of my scenery, or maybe an objective.

Anyway here is what I have been painting up. This will be the mobile stall for Ignatius Frei, the scrap dealer:

From this image his stock can be identified as a type writer(grimdark style), a military issue bottle, some grenades and some other odd teknological gubbins.

"You there sir, dont you think your wife would love this state of the art dishwashing servo skull, fresh from the crypts, Two for one perhaps, no,well alright then, another time perhaps "

If you click on the images you can zoom in, on the dakka gallery. Its worth it, honest.

A wild biker

Post by: weirdingway

fantastic stuff! I had missed the last update with the scrap dealer and his stall -- so cool!

The magos is great. I love how much more personality he has than your average tubes, goggles, and hood style magos. Will you build out his skull or over it in a hood? Either would look great but he works surprisingly well with the missing cranium -- maybe many of his brain functions are stored in his companion servo skull or something ...

The biker is great but I especially love the troubadour.

-Pontifex-: 'Propa' Mordiem Skeletons...  @ 2014/06/06 15:44:17

Post by: Scrazza

Cool update. The biker looks amazing. And I like where the troubadour is going.

-Pontifex-: 'Propa' Mordiem Skeletons...  @ 2014/06/06 20:00:44

Post by: Grag

Scrazza: Thanks, im rather excited to see how he comes out to

Weirdingway: I will probably sculpt some wires, then a hood over them. His cranium was originally larger but i shaved it away because his hood looked so large when i tested it. Your idea of having a removed brain does sound really cool, I may have to steal it from you it would be awesome if a servo skull floated in front of an mechanicum adept, with wires running back into his empty head
hopefully more soon

Stunning work all round the Magos really has a regal feel and the styling reflects it well, also the Troubadour is taking shape nicely love the mix of the empire armour plated legs with what I think is Tallarn Forge world head and torso.
Like the biker but a little hard to tell what's going on with the GS as some pics are a little blurry, what torso is it by the way ?

OneManNoodles: Thanks, the Tallarn bits are great, I got a mate to pick them up from the FW shop while he was in the U.K. Their the first F.W kit i've owned .
By the way I Love your mechanicus shrine.

Liamahead: Thanks

Lone dirty dog: Thank you as well, and yes that is indeed a Tallarn body. The biker is incredibly hard to photograph clearly, due to his pose. Hopefully its clearer now hes painted.

I have finished painting the biker, and as PDH mentioned over on the Ammobunker I have gone for a somewhat Mad Max like look on him. Sorry there are so many photos,
it was hard to capture the model with only a few photos. If you zoom up on them in the dakka gallery they should be a bit clearer.

And here are some clearer photos of the penitent

Some pictures of the Underhive board iv'e been working on, although nothing is stuck down:

The Underhive- Wips

The mask will be at a different angle, looking down upon the cowering populace. At the moment most of the stuff in there is just a place holder,
and the buildings on the right in the above image will probably end up as sort of grim dark favela.

Everything is still very early in production, and hasn't been glued down so your comments and advice in possible placement would be much appreciated.

Cheers lone dirty dog, but what are you trying to insinuate about my precious table?

Well, thanks to Tomasz and his blog The Metatyrant, I have been reinspired to try this idea. Although I have a whole load of other projects this one allows me to keep working on my Arbites.
Here is the Wip judge…

The bit of blu tack hanging from his mouth is going to be a scroll.(sorry the picture is so big)

Hopefully, if I can sculpt it, he will have a writing utensil,on his mouth similar to the mandibles of a spider. Like this.

With some more wip arbites

By the way has anyone else been disappointed by some of the new ork releases, like the mighty warp bubble gun, and the mek boy who looks like a cheap conversion of the basic ork boys back in my day we had proper orks not these-.--grumble grumble, rant etc

-Pontifex-: 'Propa' Mordiem Skeletons...  @ 2014/06/21 23:09:35

Post by: Warboss_Waaazag

Yes. As a long term ork player most of the new stuff disappoints me. Your underhive garbage landscape looks beautiful and the conversions/paintjobs are phenomenal. In this hobby there are a few who convert well, a few who paint well, and a very rare few who do both well. This blog fits the last category.

Subscribed.

I like the walkway. And I recommend butchering the Styrofoam piece and reassembling it to make it look less like a piece of prefab Styrofoam. You can add a lot of texture on the cheap by mixing craft sand (that can be found in hobby or craft stores) into acrylic paint and then slathering it on the exterior walls of your buildings. Makes it look like stucco or concrete forms once it's painted. Remember that layers add detail, even if those layers are literally paper thin. I use cereal boxes and sketch pad paper.

Keep at it, looking great so far.

Also, I recommend more walkways. Varied in length, width, height, and disrepair.

Thanks for the kind words mate The terrain has still got a long way to go, and I plan to cover the outside of the styrofoam with a whole lot of detailing, gantries and scaffolding to maximize the places models can stand on.

Now for a massive image dump, Ive just got around to editing some earlier images on gimp:

There was a brief glimpse of a rusty / wrecked car in one of your first pics... Got anymore pictures of that one ?

Post by: Grag

Thankye kindly Ruglud Ill get some pictures up of the car when i get a chance, although its not very impressive, just an toy Audi painted grimdarkerly

Now, theres the good news and the bad news. The good news being that I finished sculpting the Judge, and he was, (in my opinion) the coolest model iv'e made. .. The bad news is that I sprayed him in the wrong manner destroying the precious detail and basically covering all of the work I had done.
In scraping of this gunk I damaged his writing mandibles, and a few others details.
In the end i just couldnt rebuild those details, so i just painted him as was… here he is.
On a happier note I just found the Confrontation rules on Yaktribe gaming, they are really rather inspiring.

just a quick update here, ive chosen different legs for the marine, as i didnt feel the ones he had gave him the ponderous movement/heroic walk i was looking for. Here are some picks of him, Brother sergeant Aelius of the ultramarines with his legs very roughly blutaced.

Are the old legs better, or do you prefer these-your opinions would be valued.

And now for something completely different

before embarking upon my current inq28 mission me and a mate also planned a mordhiem campaign(it never happened)
Although the campaign crashed and burned, before it even took of we both got plenty of models together, and i began to channel that city of the damned into some terrain. So for now, until inspiration strikes once again i will be drip feeding the members of the warband, and eventually the terrain, to your here.

First we have part of a semi ongoing project to build all of the hired swords from the rulebook.

Of course, like any wizard worth his salt, or indeed warpstone, he has a menagerie of items, including an orkoid skull, a pidgeon, feathers and plenty of other baubles.

And a halfling ranger.(just noticed that the paint has come of his nuckles)

-Pontifex-: 'Propa' Mordiem Skeletons...  @ 2014/07/06 03:35:51

Post by: Grag

So far I have built the warlock/hedge wizard, the elf ranger, halfling scout and two dwarf slayers. That leaves the pit fighter, ogre body guard and the freelancer knight.

The idea with the ranger was to create a somewhat less 'Prissy' elf, one who doesnt look like they care about all the dirt on their nice, clean, white robe. In effect he needed to be really nicely blood splattered.--

A slightly clearer pic of the scout.

With the next update i will hopefully have pictures of the Grunberg city watch.

Thanks folks, i have indeed taken some more pics( a laborious task as there are so many of them.) First we have the Grunberg city watch, led by watch captain Himmelreich, inspired by Sam Vimes, from Terry Pratchetts night watch. I usually use Reiklander rules for these lads

Captain Himmelreich

The large fella

watchmen

The obligatory Drunkard

The poncy pistolier(just look at his feather, and his well maintained mustache, ive heard it said its more precious to him than the wyrdstone itself)

The Sturdy men of the nights watch.

Next we have the lost and the damned( although their more lost than they are damned )

Next we have the Skulle Enfante. (You cant get more blanchian than adding e's at the end of words, and mispelling them)

I am rather proud of his single bulging and blood shot eye.

The design on his back is a mix of a three eyed evil sun and a chaos star, with a triangle between the eyes…
woah, did I here someone say ILLUMINATI
Next, a zombie. Every one likes zombies.

The hunter

The skaven, Skreth mouldmange

And lastly, hailing from the chaos wastes, the mighty, the malignant, the evil, Herg of the Yusaks with his mighty bow Grehl.

Next will be my first mordhiem warband(and the worst painted) the Schwarzbridge gang

Lots of inspiring stuff here.. really liking that elf and the stone monolith ( was that the bretonian reliquary ? ) on the bulging eye guys base..

your photography is really evocative too.

Characterful models as usual! My favorite has to be the Watchman hunching over the light of his lantern peering into the darkness.

The various dregs and scum are really great as well, the zombie with the scroll-shield is nice.

Really awesome conversions and painting. Terrain is awesome.

-Pontifex-: 'Propa' Mordiem Skeletons...  @ 2014/07/09 23:32:15

Post by: Grag

Neil 101: cheers, the stone monolith is a plaster cast of the brettonian reliquary i made awhile ago, it was pretty munted so it worked. Ive started using my screwed up spray technique on bases, as it makes an interesting rough texture to paint over. I was looking through your gallery a while ago- and those pics of the tzeentchi scenery are stunning, i would have sworn I was looking at real, overgrown ruin if I hadnt seen your cutting mat in the background.. Stunning..

Mister Feral: I do have a soft spot for that watchman as well- he looks great on the board- pearing out into the darkness as some gribbly creature rises behind him.

SilverMK2: Thank you

Now for a serious terrain update. First the town of Grunberg, which I made up. It is, in my head, a small vassal town near to Mordhiem, which was just as badly affected by the comet, and the influx of oddities that it caused.
First, the map of Grunberg.

And for those who are interested, on the blog, there are a few more photos and Williams wonderful warband(see what i did there )

Automatically Appended Next Post:
And heres a wee bit more, A witch hunter, a priest and a question.

Just a little teaser of Williams work...

And the question. Ive been ticking away with this fellow for a while, as a lack any real inspiration to paint him, now ive hit a snag.

Do you think his umbrella should be Purply Blue, or another colour like red. Obviously red is more Blanchian, but he might become a bit dull unless I introduce another colour.
Your opinions would be valued

-Pontifex-: 'Propa' Mordiem Skeletons...  @ 2014/07/10 06:27:18

Post by: lone dirty dog

Once again just simply amazed you seem to emulate a sense of dirt and gloom so convincingly

Grunberg has some resemblance to the village in brothers grim, the texture you have achieved with your paint scheme is just brilliant.

The wood on the small shack is just mind blowing its so realistic, then the rusty panels are so convincing

You just continue to surprise and amaze with each update, it is a real joy to admire your work.

If you have the time would you mind sharing your paint recipe for the wood and rusty panels

The priests robe is great the shading really draws out the folds and the book seems aged like a real relic.

As for the umbrella I think a muted tone of red would work nicely

-Pontifex-: 'Propa' Mordiem Skeletons...  @ 2014/07/10 07:25:46

Post by: Grag

Cheers. From what i can remember the wooden panels are painted with all citadel paints, The most important thing there wasnt the paint job, but the initial texture. I used a brass bristle brush on balsa wood- a scrubbing movement up and down the grain, which creates a wonderful grained, rotting wood texture. Also pressing pins and pokers into the balsa to make rotten/ bug infested holes.
For the paint probably rakarth flesh, then devlan mud, then skull white, then devlan mud(maybe a bit of seraphim sepia) Then drybrush in rakarth felsh with more skull white. Finally nuln oil in areas i wanted darkened, and a careful skull white drybrush. I think some areas had green and yellow washes on random areas. The last drybrush is the most important, as thats what picks up all the texture, and makes it look so detailed.

It takes along time to achieve, and I dont usually use citadel paints, but it was so small I wanted to finish it to a higher standard for fun.

I cant remeber what the rust was but ill make a note of it next time i get around to painting some.

I was reading through your thread from 2013, and wondered if you were still planning that project, it sounded really cool but you didnt post any pics. You might be interested in looking at the graphic novels by Stephen King, Dark Tower. Although the exact setting is somewhat different to what you described you might find it good for ideas. There are also really cool mutants in it.

Post by: neil101

Wow that village is really sombre, i love it ! The map is also a great touch , your artistic style is really shining through.

you could paint the umberella guys face red , like in the image from the dark tower cover for contrast. or maybe add small red trinkets blood drops kill trophies etc dangling down from the underside /edge of the umbrella.

Cheers, i do prefer the respirator. 'cept the original bald one had a certain 'Honourable Ultramarine' look to it, and seemed to echo the physical, almost alien gigantism that some Writers describe the astartes as having.
But on the other hand, the respirator just looks dangerously serious.

Maaaaaaan that terrain looks awesome! Very curious to see how you'll develop the village further. Would be a nice though to also do the shoreline, where the boats dock and such.

Have you also posting some of this stuff on Yaktribe, it's a cool Necromunda/Mordheim community.

Thanks, its nice to have a comment. The mordhiem terrain is currently having a hiatus and i havent done any work on it for a while, but that was one thing i really wannted to build.
I can just imagine mordhiemers clambering over the sides of some great, rotting ship hulk, festooned in sea weed. Or perhaps a battle along the boardwalk, above the ocean. Or even gangs of smugglers. Or covert missions to burn and raze an enemies boat as it sits in anchor.
So much inspiration, so little time

I did try posting on yaktribe, but i dont really have enough time to post here, on the blog and on ammobunker.

That is some amazing scratch building there you have real knack at creating scenery and buildings, the detail and character you have achieved is just amazing.

I love the destroyed section and the chimneys great use of blue stuff

Incredible models, gritty, creative, full of character, and just simply fantastic! They are all so great and eerie, I especially love the imperial crucifix. Very cool and very 40k. Another thing I want to applaud is your terrain. It seems so much like a character itself, which I've seen only on a few tables. Overall excellent work!

Lone dirty dog, cheers. I am rather happy with this building, i just hope i can finish it sometime. The search for that blue stuff has been an ongoing saga for me, as its not avalaible in New Zealand. Spent 3 months looking for some, I then found a whole lot in a mates grandfathers shed, up in the bush.

Tundrafrog1124: are you trying to chat me up

Rogue wolves: Thanks, the devils in the detail, that really is the most important part, it adds all the character. Just look at the work of Dave Andrews, or Neil 101.

Well, just a quick update, and a favour: is there any one out there who would care to make up an imperial poster for me, probably on photoshop. Could anyone who is interested PM me.

This is Lord Pontifex, Canus er Thrax, leader of the Ecclesiary and self imposed dictator of Thrax II.
And which one do you think looks better, one or two

Cheers Tundrafrog. Now, for some pictures of the painted board, or at least the semi painted. It still has a long way to go before i am finished. Next I am thinking of adding a coat to lighten the basic base, then shellac and water effects. If there is anyone who knows a cheap but good water effect could they please spill the beans. Also, if anyone has any inspirational photos of terrain i'd love a link as my hobby drive is in a slump at the moment.
So, for now a few teasers.

And i'd also like to thank Rogue Wolves and Bruticus for making me up some these posters, hopefully I can use some soon.

aand, some more
The boards as they now stand.
The sump water was made with:
shellac,
powdered dye,
pva, white wood varnish,
white paint washes
plaster dust
and a black spray paint coat when it was half dry.

Some photos i took with a macro lens while the water effects where drying.

Next will be to moving onto the actual terrain. Im thinking gothic ruins, twisted trees, slums , industrial wasteland, factories, an arbites barracks, all the good stuff.
So from now im looking for any inspirational images, and ill be collating them over on the blog.

If any one would like to see a particular terrain piece, or has a great photo, id love to see it.

Aand some Mordhiem, some WiPs of the vampire hunting warrior priest and friends who will hopefully join Bruticus' Throne of Bones campaign, If he'll take them of course. The chap on the right has been ditched btw.

Dirt check, grit check, hazzard lines check apocalyptic devastation check work of art

Vampire hunters band are coming together nicely like the combination of armour and robes gives that look of monks forced into hunting roles, I think the head is better now the first choice made it look as though he had fallen to chaos IMHO.

When you say the guy on the right do you mean the guy with the shield as I kind of liked the pose, looks like he is trying protect the band from the demon host.

Jerp:Cheers mate.
PDH: NOOoo, what have I done, destroying something that PDH liked--I will spend the rest of my life in a monastery, carrying out penitence by rebuilding the head one grain of plastic at time.

Well, I have done some work on these chaps, but I've been stymied by a lost camera cord. So no photos until I find it.
To fill that void I found these rather wonderful images, that I think ooze potential for Necromunda. Apparently during the age of Enlightenment men would travel around the country with orreries, teaching the peasant folk the order of the Universe. Wouldnt it be great to have a Chaos type group like this, proving to a hive worlds inhabitants how the alignment of planets equates to the rise of greater Gods in the universe.

Any how, hopefully some photos soon.

Curious how you did the helmet. Cool to see how Judge Dredd you're making this fellow. Cute how they later on tried to move away from that design, but we all know that Arbites are just Judge Dredd but then in space (and even Judge Dredd had adventures in space).

Wow Grag that model looks so much cooler than what I thought used to be a cool. Mainly because I really like that concept sketch as opposed to how the models actually look

Malika: Woah, dont go telling every one about the GW-Dredd conspiracy
Judge Dredd has been a big inspiration for these chappies. Ive got an old G.W copy of the Judge Dredd roleplaying game , so I plan to give that a go when I get a chance. Just need some ten and twelve sided dice.
Roguewolves:You can trust Jes Goodwin to design miniatures to perfection(just look at the Dark Eldar) . The old sculpts arent too bad, they just lack Dreddesque bad-assnesseses.

This makes it a bit clearer about what was sculpted and what was beyond my ability.

The mad flagellant Quintomme, who worships the aged relic of a sword which he carries as a holy sygil of Sigmar, put in his hands for safe keeping, and to allow him to smight deamons and unbelievers.
He wears the brown habit of a monk, and has a crude representation of the comet of Sigmar daubed upon his head. And a scarf of course(his ol' mum didn't want him to catch a cold )

He still needs his base painted(i'll paint it at the same time as the warrior priest's) and a healthy smattering of blood.

and some photos from during his painting. Iv'e been working on a slightly more artistly(I know, its not a word), rather than miniature painting method of painting(I could probably put that better) building up layers of bright colour, then washing and drybrushing them down. Here are some PiP photos form during that show what I'm talking about

and wet blending in white.

Another masterpiece the way he is grasping his sword ( that sounds wrong ) as though it is his very saviour is genius, I also love the comet on his forehead great idea and with the paint scheme really tells your story perfectly

Your painting style represents that dark gothic feel of the miniature amazingly well, also the candles on the base is a nice touch great stuff once again

Very artfully done model! What makes it for me is like you said, it looks more like a painting than a model! ( Which I honestly have a difficult time trying to paint a model like a painting ) What I especially love is the skin! Reminds me actually of an alcoholic I know. Next time you paint skin like that I would love to see a step by step of some sort, just to see the technique you use. Or if thats too much work a text form explanation will do

LDD: Cheers mate, I was just playing around with bits and came upon the sword stroking pose by chance, I think it is wonderfully creepy.

Warboss_Wazaag:Ah, you put it so well

Rogue wolves: Thank you, i'll see if i can work a tutorial up next time i get some painting done.

PDH: He could take Nagash easy (and with the new models he actually could(if only I thought any of them were actually cool))
Progress on rebuilding the head is slow, as I have to stop and flagellate myself with a copy of the Blanchitsu in which your models featured, every hour, with out fail. And of course I also have to kneel and pray before the shrink wrap servitor shrine I erected at the back of my house.

The warrior priest is now finished so here are some photos. As you can see I went for a slightly less painterly style on this chap, to reflect the fact that he is somewhat less mad than Grelbius, I imagined him as a more grim, stern character.

I imagine the only reason he alows the monk to accompany him is because he believes his mad babblings are a sign of sigmars blessing. The warrior priest even allowed Grelbius to paint the name of their lord on his scabbard, thusly "blessing" it.

One of my personal favourite details is the fact that he only wears one shoe.

Fantastic new stuff.

I love the Arbite. So nice seeing that wonderful Jes Goodwin concept in model form. You should do a second wearing only the chin armor and rebreather with the helmet removed.

PDH: Cheers, I just hope I can keep it up

tundrafrog1124:I'm glad you like them, and he candles are fairly easy to make. I can do a quick tutorial if your interested.

Ive sent the Vampire hunter to Bruticus, to take up the fight against his vampires. His background can now be found here:http://www.exprofundis.com/mordheim-vampire-hunter/
Ive taken a break for a short while to concentrate on getting some models finished. Ive got an eversor assasin and some other stuff in the pipeline. Ive also got two new Arbites servitors.

Firstly, Servitor III of the Adeptus Arbites of Thrax, Castigator model. This servitor, originally some long forgotten law breaker, is used for the branding of Heretics and other malcontents. Contained within the servitor units chest is a small furnace, from which a branding iron can be heated. The servitor usually accompanies Judges or singular arbites carrying out patrols in more dangerous areas.

And servitor unit IV, used by the Arbites for hacking and unlocking areas which are in the way of the arbites duty. One hand contains a set of pins/tumblers, whlie the other has tiny mechandendrites through which the servitor can connect directly to the machine spirit in order to commune with it and recieve its blessed information.

On the servitors back, a data pad and printer presents information in usable format to the Arbites.

And for any one interested, there are some more photos up on my blog here:http://theunderhivea.blogspot.co.nz/" target="_new" rel="nofollow"> http://theunderhivea.blogspot.co.nz/

lone dirty dog: You flatter me Hopefully the vampire hunters innate faith will hold his glue bonds together through tough times

SJM: Cheers,
Although so far i have stringently avoided chaos, Ive been playing around with my bits.. (that doesnt sound quite right)and these conversions just came together. wether i will ever finish them is another matter entirely.
I always sit down to methodically finish all the half finished projects i have on the go and then suddenly find some idea or combination of bits which sets me off, crazily looking through my boxes, cutting up models and generally making a massive mess.

Any way, here we have them, two thousand sons and a dark mechanicus tech priest. Im sure you can tell from the blutack bulges that they are very much wip's

The rather strange dark Mechanicus heretek, his face, beneath a metal hood, is made of flayed skin(dont worry, its not his own)

And just to prove that I havent forgotten the arbites, heres some detailing ive begun for the barracks I'm working on.

One last thing, a question: I have recently come to question my bits storage system(just dump them all in a box) does anyone else have a simple way of storing all those little heads arms and assorted gubbins, if so Id love to hear.

-Pontifex-: 'Propa' Mordiem Skeletons...  @ 2014/10/01 03:38:56

Post by: weirdingway

Very cool! I particularly like the techmarine torso on the first thousand son. The Dark Mechanicus guy looks interesting too, like a homemade version of the FW Myrmidons.

At least your bits are in a box! My natural tendency is to store my bits in a pile that covers my cutting matt work zone. Every once in a while I force myself to sort through the bits and try to pull out the best ones and organize them in a storage bin thing, but it never lasts long.

-Pontifex-: 'Propa' Mordiem Skeletons...  @ 2014/10/01 07:31:44

Post by: lone dirty dog

"The rather strange dark Mechanicus heretek" has a great posture that hung over hunchbacked stance really works well and his distorted facial expression completes the character perfectly

The Barracks emblem is spot on I get the impression there is going to be some size to this when complete

As for storage I use these get them from Ebay cheap as chips and quick delivery, just search for plastic storage containers :

I use what LDD uses for conversion Ideas (all the bits for a model in one section) otherwise I use little resealable bags, like bits sellers use.

lindsay40k: Cheers, I always try to get something Blanchian into my models.

deadmeat85:hmm, I should probably look into something similar.

OneManNoodles:I find that i dont really want to categorize my bits to much as some of the fun is looking through and then having random conversions spring out at me. I might get some of thesame containers as LDD

LDD: Glad you like him, although now Iv'e begun it may be some time before he resurfaces, lost in a tide of bits The barracks is going to be pretty large, its going to be made out of that old styrofoam packing case I was using earlier. I just have to decide wether to cut off the top and make a detailed inside or not.\

Weirdingway:Cheers about the darkmechanicus guy, a few people have pointed out his family resemblance, so i may have to have another look at the myrmidons style.
That sounds exactly like my system. Even when i do turn myself to moving them it just tends to be a "sweep everything off the desk into a box" rather than any type of sorting.

Anyway, back into the Grim darkness and all that...

The whipping servitor, tasked with the shriving of unclean things from the bodies (or corpse's) of the Emperor's congregation.
Where the Ecclesiary protect the souls of His servants, the Arbites must protect their living abode's from unclean thought and action, for even to contemplate heresy against the Emperor is to be eternally damned, let alone to carry it out.

Through incessant whipping the lack of spiritual fortitude which allowed a demon to lead some small time criminal to sin is eradicated. Although of course, for crimes of greater magnitude death is the only option.

The individual upon which this great burden has been placed was once a adolescent boy, who, some say, attempted to steal from a local noble. The ancient process which turned him into a servitor has stunted his growth leading him to remain small with smoothened skin, a strange sight indeed for those who see him.

The scales of the Adeptus arbites are inscribed upon his brow, a reminder to those whom he punishes of who their dictators are.

And a rather small group shot, sorry about that. You can zoom in on them:Here

And last but hopefully not least some shots of my latest terrain piece (I finished it a while ago but only got around to putting the photos on the dakka gallery today) It was originally a gutter cover.

Liking the new band and the bit of fluff, don't you just love self proclaimed leaders there arrogance is only out done by there ignorance

Any chance of a breakdown of Canus parts also the really ugly cherub where is the head from please

Hmm, you seem to be my only consistent commenter on the whole of dakka LDD.

The icy look just happened when I flicked watered down white paint at the transparent plastic(but dont tell anyone that, the simplicity of my technique would ruin my mystique )

Oh yes, I think there is certainly plenty of that where the Pontifex came from, although he is better in a fight than most Self Proclaimed leaders. I figure the rest of the imperium doesnt much care what one ruler does with a planet as long as those tithes keep coming in. He's made up of Finecast wrack legs, a empire knightly orders torso, one arm from the Phoenix guard from blood island(i really dont know where i got that bit cause i never bought the rest of the kit ) The heads from the empire archers, with a green stuffed forehead and the Cherubs head, is, if my memory serves me correctly, a shrunkern one from the pole arm of a lizardman Templeguard kit (you can see the back of one in the picure on GW). That little shrunkern head is possibly one of my favourites, its so creepy but cool

This thread is now almost permanently open in a tab on my browser, probably half the hits are from me crashing and restarting all the time lol.

Love to see some more of the thunder warrior, looks bang on, to the artwork, carved from a terminator correct?

Also where is the Culexus head from?

There are similar heads to the cherub's in the nurgle plague bearers kit.

Awesome stuff, can't wait to see some paint on these chaps!

Just read your complete blog. This is awesome! Love the paintjobs and your creativity! This blog is a great source for inspiration, i espacially like the mortheim stuff. The night watch looks perfect! Never played mortheim before, but this inspires me, to create an own little warband. Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work!

Brilliant stuff that Thunder Warrior really works. I'd like to see more Wars of Unification stories about. The Last Church is brilliant.

I've enjoyed reading the thread and viewing your work. Consider me part of the unofficial official lurker squad! That assassin is quite excellent by the way, much more appealing than the GW model. Excited to see how it turns out.

Holy sh*t it would seem I have an infestation of lurkers someone get me my flamer.

LDD: Its certainly a disappointment

Bobafett: Mordhiems a great game, I would certainly recommend it. I will(hopefully) have some more terrain up for it soon.

OneMannoodles:Ah so thats what it is
The thunder warrior is indeed carved from a terminator, although I plan to build up his legs with plasticard later. The Culexus head is from a SM chaplains I hacked up in the folly of my youth.

Stc_LogisEngine: Thanks for the kind words, I saw you work for the first time the other day over on the ammobunker, and Ive got to say, its amazing. The only reason i didnt leave a comment there was a lack of time.

Lamahead: Totally agree with you there, I really enjoyed the Last Church. Although I kind of like the lack of stories about the unification wars, it adds to the sense of a half known age, before the 41st millenium, filled with warriors and long lost heros.

and thank you Deadmeat85, xeno99, moonpie and combat engineer for your comments which are (always)really appreciated.

And now, for your delight and entertainment, I present, the Pontifical guard, hot off the press. I decided to work with more tan colours with these lads, as well as darker skin than I would usually attempt. I'll post the reasons for this with the Pontifex himself.

Ok time to leave a comment.....

I love your work, hits the grim dark aspect spot on. But, on you Guard I feel the segmented armor of the DE legs takes away from the overall feel of the model. The legs still scream Dark Eldar to me. Maybe its just me, IDK? It's probably just me.... but looks good.

They look great! Very good paintjob on the guys. What techinique do you use? Layers of washes? They just look perfect! I'm not able to get this grimdark and "blanche" look....
Love your style and your conversions, keep up that great work

But two little thongs: you forgot the mold line between the studs and can show us some wips?

Malika2: Thanks alot, the lack of differing skintones in my models is something thats bothered me for a while, so I thought I'd give it a go.

Shasolenzabi:Is my converting really that horrific...

Deadmeat85: Hmmm, I do see what you mean. The main thing would be that rather than being standard I.G types these are the personal bodyguards of a planetary Governor, recruited from the brutal peoples of the ash wastes. I wanted them to look less like standard Guardsmen and more unique. In that way, I guess its alright if they look a bit Xenos like, as their culture would be totally different from Imperial norms.

Boba Fett: Its a mixture of standard washing, highlighting and drybrushing. It's more important to use the right colours than techniques, more muted tones, focusing one reds and yellows, earthy colours. After all there are lots of different Blanche like painters out there, from Jeff Vader, PDH, to Neil 101 and many more, but for each, the thing which makes them unique is just that- unique. Looking at your models, youv'e definitely got the talent(I love your DKoK Ogryn) maybe you should try being more messy in places. I tend to let clothing be a simple paint job, lots of drybrushing and washing, and faces as detailed as possible.. I hope that helps a bit.

About my two little thongs I did see the mold line between the studs, but only after I had finished painting it, and I really cant bring myself to scrap of the paint, as I hate to rework 'finished' models. There are a few wips earlier in the thread, is there any particular elements you want to see?

Medium of Death: Cheers

Anyone interested in his background, Iv'e updated the dramatis personae section on my blog:Here

An interesting photo I took of his reflection in a mirror

An illustration I did of the Pontifex before I started building him.(more contrasting than the one I showed before

And a mutie, who was one of my first models for Inquisimunda/necromunda, although Iv'e only just got around to basing him.

Oh, my Lurkers where oh where are you.

Now then, what better way to update than with a picture that is very dear to my heart. When I bought the Sigvald model little did I Understand the Horror which I had let myself in for. He appears to be wearing chain mail underpants.(can you possibly comprehend how cold those would be in the morning.) Now that is true dedication to Slaanesh, I mean how could any amount of divine ecstasy(the feeling, not the drug) ever make up for that .

But any way.
Firstly, I bought some Hobbit goblins, after seeing some fantastic conversions around the net (mainly Neil 101's, Nordic's and Anna Polanscak on her Blog Gardens of Hecate

These are 'the children', and will undergo something of a transformation once I buy a scalpel.

Secondly, Iv'e been doing a bit of sculpting, and plan to do rather more in future(my first target being some wacky Empire villagers)
but in the mean time, a totem, to which I still want to attache an extra arm holding a candle.

And lastly, more terrain which is growing, fungus like across my desk. Once finished I plan to spray them white and give have some fun going all textural and ghostly on 'em. Although their fairly fragile, they'll be staying in place on a game board so it shouldn't matter too much. What I really wanted to see in these trees was something similar to Alan Lee's work as he's one of my favourite illustrators:

My box of goodies(roots, moss and other nubbins

some shrubs and flowers

Some more refined trees to add interest to the city terrain

And the very beginnings of my skeletal knights, fighting in the catacombs for the Throne of Bones I've found I just cant build them without cutting them up, so I'm pretty much doubling my work load here.

As always the horror and dark grittiness of life you reflect so pleasantly no some interesting updates indeed the new skin tone brings a new element to your scheme and seems to make the armour look brighter from normal.

Love the mutie his face screams 3rd generation inbreed

The artwork is fantastic in its own right you really do have a talent there sir

Seen a few goblin conversions of late be intrigued to see your take on this.

Now the scenery I like where this going are they roots and if so what kind (if you know of course ) like the city based tree that is a great idea.

All round Impressed

Those trees are a perfect match to the look and feel of your characters, dark and grimly awesome.

Stealing your idea for the tree in the planter.

Are you going to have issues with these things rotting or whatever? Do you have to dry them out or did you do any treatment at all to them?

Cheers LDD, I'm not sure how much I'll be converting the goblins, I love the sculpts and I want to use them as a horde of monochromatic freaks bursting from the forest in my mordhiem campaign. The trees are indeed made from roots(although one of them is made from masking tape, wire and flour+water), mainly just random ones I dug up. Small saplings are best. I think I remember a tutorial where I got the idea from somewhere so I'll go looking for that when I get a chance.

Littletower: Thanks, they've just got their white undercoats on, hopefully I can get some painted pictures up soon.

moonpie: Go ahead, I plan to build a couple more as well soon. I did dry them out in the sun for a while, and coat them in pva, because they are fairly fragile.

Beautiful work, man, just beautiful! I couldn't possibly pick any one thing out as my favourite, all stunningly Blanchesque. Grim, dark, Gothic and horror in all the right spots. I'll be sticking around that's for sure.

What do use to make all that rubble and debris? Oh and the Mordheim buildings, what are they made from? Particularly the planks.

LDD: Iv'e managed to dig up those tutorials, from the Hirst arts website:

Trees

some generally interesting tutorials

And another one, which I found useful, from an insanely talented Scenery maker:
Here

Ah well, no sun for you, whereas down here in middle earth we have sun all year round

Kencotter: I'll see what I can cook up, It isn't really a technique iv'e repeated, as pulling root out of the ground is so much easier, and looks more realistic.

Casey's law: Good to have you here, I'll see if i can keep the supply of Grim and dark up(we've got plenty in stock )

Medium.o.d: Yep they should be good fun, plenty of rags and slime...

I finished painting one goblin, just for fun, and took some pictures. I swear the dakka gallery removes some of the information, because they look a lot lower quality here than they did before i loaded them up.

The trees are great, I've been thinking of similar things myself. They look very fragile which could be a problem, but I woudln't worry too much about them rotting or going funny - I hear you are supposed to cook wood in the oven to kill bacteria or dry it out or something but the advantage of using wood to represent wood is that if it does rot then it will still look right.

Anyway, very cool stuff.

Bruticus: Yep, ive just started painting the trees now now. Im not happy with them at the moment, but well see.

Its been a while. I was over in the U.S.A for 6 weeks and kind of lost the blogging/foruming rhythm, but hopefully I can keep this running.
After reading The Road by Cormac McCarthy, and watching The book of Eli again, Iv'e become interested in doing something post apocalyptic style, within the 40k setting, so that might bear fruit at some point.

In the meantime, I have these two models to show. I'll be the first to say the painting is a bit sloppy in places, but its been awhile.

Durrack 'the runt' Murrah, Leader of the Hive gang of the same name. Pulling a blasphemous finger sign which would have him arrested and 'reeducated' at the point of a hot iron and blade were it to be seen by the Arbites.

The belly of a child's stuffed toy serves as his gun holster(I mangled the painting a bit but its meant to be a teddy bear)

And an Ash Waste nomad who I'm not exactly happy with.

As you can see from my sig Ive joined Bruticus and Meade on their site Ex Profundis, although I'm yet to post anything up. I guess I'm going to have to pick up my modeling game in such illustrious company.

LDD: Its nice to be back. I'm always hard on myself, its a dog eat dog world, making miniatures , Iv'e got to be totally at the top of my game. Show a sign of weakness and bam, I'll be consigned to page 126 of the dakka backlogs where there is a great wailing and gnashing of teeth. The nomads alright, just not quite right.... its a matter of my pedantic need to create something exactly like my original mental image/ idea.

neil101: Cheers, Iv'e seen scarpers stuff before, really awesome, a shame he hasn't posted in a while.
Iv'e recently been gazing in rapture at the game Metro: last light. Just got to resist the urge to build some slimy musty ol' Metro tunnels, dripping with rotten weeds, fleshrotted corpses and rusting tangles o... No, I must be strong, I must resist the urge..........

Ex Profundis is indeed lookin good, both design wise and miniature wise. I'm just waiting till I feel Iv'e got something good enough to go up.

Onemannoodles: Ayh thanks, but your Militia are awesomely ecclisiastical. I feel the same way whenever I look at Neil101 or PDH or Bruticus', or any number of other peoples' work.

Sorry the pictures not that clear(sorry for saying sorry so much) The backpack and turban are from a forgeworld Tallarn kit, the body from a cultist, an Empire pistol and the other arm is from a Hobbit goblin.

Also, this is what I'm currently working on:
An obese vampire for Bruticus' Throne of Bones. Since the photo ive ditched his legs, cut of his head to reposition it and done little else.

Also, Ive degoofed: (dee-goofed, the literal act of removing goof, or the semblance of goofiness from an object, place or person) the G.W skeletons(clearer pictures later):

Dog eat dog world I hope not "looks around suspiciously " self criticism is not always abad thing helps you lift your game and reach the perfection you desire.

However you have a talent and style I wish I owned myself, but viewing it at least fills the void somewhat

I personally love the Nomad and had figured out the body you used correctly it was the head I was not sure of as it made me think FW but looked so different at the same time.

But nice conversion and I have a use for all those DC I bought of ebay now , the obese Vampire made me think of that damn thing in Blade the one they burn to death with the UV torch.
I gather he will be reclining on some kind of extravagant lounger surrounded by his feed of the day wait night ?

As for the skeletons I want a how to on them as they actually look aggressive and evil, not that stupid cartoony clumsily look they normally have

Post by: Bruticus

The fat vampire has potential but I'm really interested in these skeletons, I've been trying to figure out how to do some myself - I really dislike skeletons with bleached white bones and lots of equipment, skeletons should look like they just dragged themselves out of the dirt and grabbed whatever weapon they could find.

-Pontifex-: 'Propa' Mordiem Skeletons...  @ 2015/05/03 02:45:09

Post by: Grag

Ldd: Youre right there although, its good to reach a balance being critical and sometimes being happy with what you produce. The fat vampire will probably be reclining on a pile of stain, torn but still elegant cushions, ideally giving a 'come hither' look (if i can pull it of) and beckoning 'seductively' towards his next meal as his retainers carry them forwards.

Bruticus: Amen to that, ive definitely been thinking along the same lines.

Well, here they are, although one, a kislevite spearman is still waiting for paint. There are a couple more wip photos on Ex profundis(link in my sig)
