hey Dakka...

i guess it's about time to start a WIP log here...
it's only taken 8 years to get over my shyness of posting work in progress, but since i started an Artist page over Facebook where i post a daily update, i figure i might as well be sharing them on the forums, too...

if you want to check out what i have been up to for the last two months on the Facebook page, it's here:

https://www.facebook.com/jahminis

most of the work here will be commissions, a little bit of studio work, and the occasional piece painted for sale on eBay...
if you want to see what i have for sale there, here is my page:

http://www.ebay.com/sch/jah-joshua/m.html?item=251546718505&hash=item3a915a5129&pt=Games_US&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2562

right now i am working on a pair of commissions for a guy in France...
it is a Blood Angels Sanguinary Priest, and another plastic version of Commander Dante, both built from the Sanguinary Guard box...

i'm starting with the body of the Sang. Priest:

this time i'm trying a little experiment with grey primer instead of black...

the basecoat for my red is P3 Sanguine Base...

next i mixed up a heavy wash of equal parts Sanguine Base, P3 Coal Black, and P3 Armor Wash...
in this photo you can see where i came back and painted half of the body again with the base color...

after i reapplied the Sanguine Base to the whole body, i started building up my red...
this is a mix of the SB with P3 Khador Red Base at a 2-1 ratio...

the next stages are layers of the same SB plus KRB in ratios of 1-1, and 1-2...

carrying on with more layers, there is a mix of SB plus KRB at a 1-4 ratio, and then a layer of pure Khador Red Base (this mostly shows on the legs here)...

i'm also playing around with a Vindicare Assassin that will be for sale when he's finished...

that's all for today...
i have finished the pure red on the Sang. Priest's body, but i haven't taken the photos yet...
that's tonight's mission...

thanks for looking...
i hope you like the WIP's...

cheers
jah

Great stuff! What paint brand were you using? I don't remember a sanguine base in the GW or vallejo line.

thanks, man...
glad you like what you see...

i use P3 paint from Privateer Press...
in my opinion, they are the best colors on the market, and the liquid pigment means they cover really well...

hey Dakka...

another update on the Sanguinary Priest...

i got the pure P3 Khador Red Base done...
now the large areas of shadow really stand out, but i still need to come back in and paint some small shadows in strategic locations...
after that, i can get started on the fine highlights...

next up i'll show a bit of the work on the wings...

thanks for looking...
i hope you like him, so far...

thanks, mate...

this is my first time doing any kind of step-by-step...
i'll have to do the same for Dante next, since he is mostly gold, it will be a good example of how i paint TMM...

hey Dakka...

time for a few shots of the wings for the Sanguinary Priest...

this is over grey primer again...
base coat of P3 Sanguine Base for the armored bit, and P3 Greatcoat Grey for the feathers...

i built up the armor using the same stages of red as the body...
i started layering up the white wings with a 1-1 mix of Greatcoat Grey and P3 Underbelly Blue...

here is a sneak peek at the next stage, building up the feathers with a pure coat of Underbelly Blue...

thanks for looking...
i hope you like it, so far...

Joshua, that's some beautiful layering! Thanks for doing this step-by-step, it's being very interesting how good the red is turning out thanks to several layers.

thanks, TDL...
glad you like what you see...

here is stage 3 on the feathers...
a layer of pure P3 Underbelly Blue...

the tedious work is done...
next is the fun part, highlights, and maybe a little (very thinned) wash to shade...

thanks for looking...

hey Dakka...

here's what i have, so far, and a bit of recap...

red:
grey primer...
pure P3 Sanguine Base basecoat...
a heavy wash of a 1-1-1 mix of P3 Armor Wash, P3 Coal Black, and Sanguine Base...
reapply the Sanguine Base, leaving the deepest shadows from the wash...
a layer of Sanguine Base and P3 Khador Red Base at a 2-1 ratio...
a 1-1 layer of SB and KRB...
a 1-2 layer of the same, and then a 1-4 layer of the same...
a layer of pure KRB...

feathers:
grey primer
P3 Greatcoat Grey for the basecoat...
a layer of Greatcoat Grey and P3 Underbelly Blue at 1-1...
a layer of pure UB...

there is a lot more to do on these parts, but i'm going to start on the white helm, and the red sword arm, first...

thanks for looking...
i hope the step-by-step is helpful...

cheers
jah

Post by: jah-joshua

thanks, guys...
i'm glad you are enjoying the process...

here is the start of a couple of the other pieces of the Sanguinary Priest...
the power sword arm has the basecoats down...
the blade has a coat of P3 Thamar Black...
the armor and wax seals have a basecoat of P3 Sanguine base...
the wings are P3 Greatcoat Grey, while the purity seals, and anything that will be gold, have a basecoat of P3 Battlefield Brown...

the helmet is also basecoated with Greatcoat Grey...
i can't believe how much work has gone into making it look exactly the same as it did on the sprue...
same color, basically, just sans moldlines, and ready to take some paint, as I build up to white...
i will be using the same recipe as the wings, so that it matches the slight blue tinge on the feathers...

thanks for looking, and taking the time to comment...

cheers

hey Dakka...

here is the next stage of the helmet...
this is the same as the second layer on the wings, an equal mix of P3 Greatcoat Grey and P3 Underbelly Blue...
it still resembles bare plastic more than anything, but you can start to see the shadows a bit...

i've also started in on the decorations and gear on the body...
first everything was picked out with a coat of P3 Thamar Black...
the soft armor bits around the joints get a first highlight of Greatcoat Grey...
the glass vials and the tubes get a coat of P3 Gnarls Green, as do some of the lights, and the screen on the little data slate...
the metal parts of the vials get a coat of P3 Pig Iron...
the keys of the data slate get a base of Greatcoat Grey, while any little lights that will be red, as well as the blood drops, get a coat of P3 Sanguine Base...
the pouch gets a first highlight of P3 Coal Black...
finally, the parts that will be gold get a base of P3 Battlefield Brown...

thanks for looking...
i hope you are enjoying yourselves...

Automatically Appended Next Post:
hey Dakka...

i've built up the reds on the sword arm...
now it's on the the rest of the details of the arm...

i also blacked out the bits of the helm that won't be white...
i'm thinking green lenses, black wings, and of course, a red helix...

thanks for looking...

hey Dakka...

i got the next layer of the helmet done...
instead of jumping straight to P3 Underbelly Blue, like i was thinking, i went for one more mix to help with the transition on such big curves of the helmet...
this is a mix of P3 Greatcoat Grey and Underbelly Blue, in a 1-4 ratio...
this will help the pure Underbelly Blue of the next step, and the white mixes of the stages after, to be a little less harsh...

i also got the next stages of the sword arm's parts painted...
anything that will be gold got a 1-1 mix of P3 Battlefield Brown and P3 Rhulic Gold...
the sword handle and wax seals got a layer of pure P3 Sanguine Highlight...
the paper of the purity seals got a layer of P3 Gun Corps Brown, and the wings got the same mix as the ones for the backpack, 1-1 Greatcoat Grey and Underbelly Blue...

thanks for looking...

hey Dakka...

here is the next layer on the helmet...
this time it is pure P3 Underbelly blue...
the shadows are finally starting to show...

the next stages of the sword arm are about the halfway point...
the wings are pure Underbelly Blue...
the gold is pure P3 Rhulic Gold...
the parchment is pure P3 Menoth White Base...
the wax seals, and sword handle, got a wash of pure P3 Flesh Wash (not thinned) for shadows, and then were touched up again with pure P3 Sanguine Highlight...

thanks for looking...
i hope you are all still with me...

hey Dakka...

i'm nearly done with the helmet...
this is the 5th layer of color on the white, a 1-4 mix of P3 Underbelly Blue and P3 Morrow White...
now the shadows really pop...
just one more layer to go, and then paint up the details...

the sword arm is coming along...
the wings got the same mix as the helmet...
the wax seals, and the sword handle, got a layer of P3 Sanguine Highlight and P3 Menoth White Highlight at 2-1...
the parchments got a wash of GW Orgyn Flesh Wash (from the 2007 set), and the gold got a layer of 1-1 P3 Rhulic Gold and Vallejo Air Gold (an awesome paint, which is my favorite gold to do finish work with)...

thanks for looking...

thanks, mate...

still one more layer to go, the pure white, then the details...
to be honest, i finished the helmet two nights ago, but haven't uploaded the pics yet...
it looks really nice against the red armor...
it's got me excited to highlight the armor, so i can see how the finished product will look...

Post by: jah-joshua

hey Dakka...

i finished the helmet!!!
the first piece of the mini to get the finishing touches...

the final highlight on the white is pure P3 Morrow White...
then I did the details...
the eye lenses got a basecoat of P3 Gnarls Green, a small streak of P3 Iosan Green was the first layer at the front of the lens, followed by a smaller streak of P3 Necrotite Green, and finally a dot of P3 Heartfire (a yellow-orange color)...
the rear of the lens got a small area of P3 Thamar Black, which was given a little dot of Morrow White...

the Helix, and the light's lens, were painted in my standard red progression...
a base of P3 Sanguine Base, a layer of P3 Skorne Red, layer of P3 Khador Red Base, and a highlight of Heartfire... the lens was then given a large dot of Thamar Black, and a smaller dot of Morrow White...

the wings, and power cable behind the light, got a base of Thamar Black, a layer of P3 Greatcoat Grey, followed by a sharper layer of P3 Ironhull Grey, and were finished with a fine touch of P3 Trollblood Highlight...

i've thrown in a little sneak peek at how the white helmet goes with the red armor...
works nicely, i think...

the sword arm is coming along...
i put a basecoat on the power sword blade, using P3 Exile Blue...
the golds got a heavy wash of my shade mix, 1-1 P3 Flesh wash and Sanguine Base...
the parchments were cleaned up, after yesterday's wash, with P3 Menoth White Base again...
the wings got their finishing touch with pure Morrow White, and the wax seals and sword handle were finished with a final highlight of P3 Sanguine Highlight and Morrow White, at a 2-1 ratio...
for some reason, the sword handle is really washed out in the first pic, but looks good in the second one...

thanks for looking...

cheers

hey Dakka...

i got the next layers done on the sword arm...
the only bits that are still getting work are the golds, the purity seal parchments, the soft armor at the joints, and the blade...
the blade got a layer of P3 Cygnar Blue Base to define where the glow will be...
the parchments got a layer of P3 Menoth White Highlight, and the gold got cleaned up, after yesterday's heavy shading wash, with the mix of 1-1 P3 Rhulic Gold and Vallejo Air Gold...

i also got the next layers down on the decorations and gear of the armor...
the golds got pure Rhulic...
the metals on the vials got a shading wash of pure undiluted P3 Armor Wash...
the red lights go a layer of pure P3 Skorne Red...
the pouch got a highlight of P3 Coal Black and Menoth White Highlight at a 2-1 ratio...
the vials, hoses, green lights, and data slate screen got a layer of P3 Iosan Green, and the black soft armor and tubes, plus the data slate body and the little box next to the vials, got a highlight of P3 Ironhull Grey...

thanks for looking...

cheers

hey Dakka...

another update on the body and sword arm...
first up, the body...

the vials and tubes got a layer of P3 Necrotite Green, as did the green lights...
afterwards, I tidied up the vials with P3 Thamar Black, to make it look like the liquid is at an angle...
the red lights got a layer of P3 Khador Red Base...
the gold got a layer of pure Vallejo Air Gold, and the metal bits of the vials got a layer of P3 Cold Steel...
finally, the data slate keys got a layer of P3 Trollblood Highlight...

the parchments on the sword arm got a final highlight of P3 Morrow White, and then some script with Thamar Black...
the gold got a layer of pure VA Gold, and the sword blade got a layer of P3 Cygnar Blue Highlight...
now I'm ready to make it glow...

thanks for looking...

hey Dakka...

the main details are done on the body...
the metal pieces on the vials where finished with a fine highlight using Vallejo Air Aluminium...
the vials themselves got a final layer of P3 Necrotite Green and P3 Morrow White at 2-1...
then the reflections are painted with a fine line of Morrow White, and the little bubbles are painted with a dot of P3 Thamar Black, and another dot, over the black, with Morrow White...
the tubes got the same green mix highlight, and then a fine line of pure Morrow White...
any little green lights got a final highlight of Necrotite Green, and then a spot of black on top, finished with a little dot of white...
the red lights were finished with a fine line of P3 Heartfire, and giving the same black/white dot finish...
the keys on the Data Slate got a another layer using a 2-1 mix of P3 Trollblood Highlight and Morrow White, and were finished with a light touch of pure white...
the blood drops get the same treatment as the red lights, a layer of P3 Sanguine Base, a finer layer of P3 Skorne Red, an even finer layer of P3 Khador Red Base, and then a line of Heartfire...
finished with the same black/white spots again...

the sword arm had the golds finished with a fine highlight of the Vallejo Air Aluminium...
the blood drop was painted as above...
then I painted the final rough layer on the sword blade with P3 Arcane Blue. Now I will start to blend up the glow...
this is one of the only times that I use proper blending, instead of layering...

thanks for looking...

hey Dakka...

nothing too exciting, but i got some base work done...
the bases for the Sanguinary Priest and Dante will be desert bases...
a few more rocks, and maybe a little variation in height, and these puppies will be ready for some paint...
afterwards, they will get some dried grass to liven them up...

i've also started the base for Sturgis, my Clash for a Cure mini...
i like this idea of cutting the cork at an angle, to make things less uniform (an idea I took from Ravage Magazine #13, in Jen Haley's basing article)...
it also works great with his pose...

so, i took a slight detour to finish up a guy who has been sitting around for six months almost complete...
one more night of work, and then it's back to the Blood Angels...

when i built my last Draigo using Calgar's body, i had Draigo's body left over...
i decided he would make a badass Mordrak, so here is my version...
just a little more work on the freehands, a bit of tidying up, and he will be for sale...

He looks great. Out of interest, how much do your figures and commissions usually go for? Given the amount of work you put in, I'd hope it's quite a lot to even approach making it worthwhile for the amount of time/effort you put in...

thanks, Azazelx...

a Terminator commission like this goes for $250usd...
although, i am giving $50 discounts to Dakka users...

i wouldn't say that i earn much of an hourly wage, as slow as i paint, but it is all about blowing the client's mind...
it's also a matter of perfecting my style...
i get better with each mini, though not really any quicker, since each mini is a new experiment...
i'm all about pushing my boundaries...

i finished this guy last night...
Grand Master Vorth Mordrak of the Grey Knights...
i'm pretty happy with the way he turned out...
now i just need to take some better pics...

thanks for looking...

feel free to get in touch if you are interested in getting your hands on this mini...

hahahahahaha....

that's what i was going to say, Paradigm...
he whacked that Bloodletter really, really hard...

i'm back to the Sanguinary Priest tonight...
i'm ready to get the reds on the backpack up to where the rest of the parts are...
i won't bother with the step-by-step on this part, i'll just blast through the layers instead...
i will do the step-by-step for the engine glow, though...

i've done a bit of an experiment on a different Blood Angels figure I've been working on...
this is the highlight color i'm planning to use for the Sang. Priest, mixing P3 Underbelly Blue into my P3 Khador Red Base for a lilac color...
it will be finished with many glazes of P3 Red Ink to make the highlights look a bit less white...

thanks for looking, and commenting...

That's good. You'd be ripping yourself off in terms of time if it were much lower (actually, it's still cheap IMO for the level you're putting out in terms of the effort and work involved).

Great work on the GK terminator. Lovely.

he had a ton of details to paint...

almost got the jump pack up to where the rest of the red is on the Sanguinary Priest...

hey Dakka...

there is a distinct lack of anything personal on this blog...
time to remedy that!!!

this is my dog, La Guera, that we rescued at three months old, when she was on the verge of death...
she is now 4 years old, happy and healthy, and has no idea she is a Pitbull...

this is what i do when i'm not at the painting table...
surf's up!!!

back to you regularly scheduled pics of painting tomorrow...

I always wondered if that was actually you shooting the AK in your avatar. Mystery solved. I think you said somewhere that you said you aren't a Mexico native, what brings you there, if I can ask.

yeah, that's me with the AK...
it's actually a Russian Saiga, and in that pic the barrel is switched out to a 12-guage shotgun, with only ten shells in the mag!!!
kicks like a donkey...

i grew up in Redondo Beach, California, so i've been coming to Mexico my whole life to surf and play, Wild West style...
after 20 years of travelling the globe, i came back to Mexico to open a surf shop...
i like the low cost of living, and the tropical waters...

hey Dakka...

here is a mini that is getting thrown into the mix for this year's Clash for a Cure charity auction...
the Kickstarter exclusive Cygnar Commander Dalin Sturgis...
Clash for a Cure is a Warmachine/Hordes and Malifaux tournament in Texas that holds a charity auction every year to raise money for cancer research...
each year, some of the top painters around the world are asked to contribute painted minis to the auction...
this is my second year being invited to paint a mini, and it feels good to help out for a worthy cause...

more stuff with paint on it tomorrow...

thanks for looking...

Dysartes, last year i was not invited, since the girl who was in charge of last year's painters really hates me...
i did Bartolo Montador, aka Broadsides Bart the pirate, for 2012...
now that the organizer is back in charge of the painters, i was the first one invited back...
go figure...

i started in on the blends for the power sword glow last night, carrying on with the step-by-step...
last time i left off with a layer of pure P3 Arcane Blue...
the next layer was very rough, as i am about to come back and clean everything up...
it is a layer of 1-4 Arcane Blue and P3 Morrow White...
next i cleaned up the dark parts with pure P3 Exile Blue... then i started on blending the fades...
i am working back and forth with layers of Arcane Blue, P3 Cygnar Blue Base and Highlight, and Exile Blue...
one more night of work, and the sword will be done...

thanks for looking, and taking the time to comment...

hey Dakka...

i got a start on the Clash for a Cure mini last night...
this guy will mostly be painted in the light colors of Cygnar, so i took advantage of the fact that the shadows will really show, and started off with a more interesting color than straight black...
the basecoat on this model is a 1-1 mix of P3 Battlefield Brown and Coal Black...
this will make the shadows have a blue-ish tone that fits with the blue of Cygnar...
the metals were started with basecoats of P3 Pig Iron, and P3 Molten Bronze...
the base is P3 Bloodstone, anda few liberal coats of GW Ogryn Flesh wash to shade...

i'm not sure why the background colors are so different in these three shots...
i really hate editing photos:(...

thanks for looking...

Looking good so far, jah - obviously a lot of work to do. Shall be interesting to see how the brown/blue/black basecoat has an impact.

Out of interest, how many more days do you think are needed on the Blood Angel?

Post by: jah-joshua

Dysartes, i think the Sang. Priest will be done in a week or so...

the blends on the sword are finished...
i brought everything together with few glazes of P3 Turquoise Ink, which also added some shading around the power nodes at the base of the sword...
then i finished everything off by smoothing out the blends, and highlighting all the way up to pure P3 Morrow White...

thanks for looking, and taking the time to comment...

thanks, guys...

the blends look much smoother to the naked eye, and when the sword is not 5x the actual size...
it should look really nice on the finished model...

i've done a bit more on Sturgis as well...
the metals got a heavy wash of 1-1 P3 Armor Wash and P3 Coal Black...
i the blues are getting painted in using a basecoat of pure P3 Exile Blue...
they are not really showing up yet on the armor plates in the pics, but will start to pop once i get the next layer on...

i will be starting on the Blood Angel's red highlights tonight...
hopefully my experiment will be successful, and i will have something really cool to show you all tomorrow...

what a crappy feeling, waiting for it to reset...
i guess i will need to upgrade my account when i have a little spare cash...

i got started in on the highlights for the Sang. Priest...
this is the first rough pass, to see if my colors will work...
it is a 1-3 mix of P3 Khador Red Base and P3 Underbelly Blue...
it is all a bit pink at the moment, but a few glazes of red ink should knock it back a bit...

Love that shade of red! Highlighting is magnificent aswell.

@Paradigm: i thought about the Dakka gallery, but i don't know if the pics would show up in the three other forums where i have this same WIP log going...

at least using the gallery just to post on here would save me 25% of the bandwidth...
of course, then i would have to upload all the pics twice, too...
geez man, you really wanna make me work...

@Develain: P3 Underbelly Blue is fairly close to Space Wolves Grey...
maybe a little lighter tone, but basically the same color...

Post by: jah-joshua

thanks, guys...

@Dysartes: the backpack is up next, with engine glow step-by-step...

@GiraffeX: since i don't paint armies, i have the liberty to try and push each mini further, and in a new direction than any previous paintjob, since all my minis don't have to look good together...
grabbing a mini that has no use in one of your armies, and going to town on it, with no rush to finish it, may just surprise you with how far you can push yourself...

on with the show...

this is how the body looked after the first pass of highlights were given about five layers of very thin P3 Red Ink, in a glaze (where there is way less ink in the brush than in a wash, and the red ink is cut way down to where it almost looks like pink water)...

next i finished the final highlights and shadows on the body...
the shows a few mistakes i need to fix, but this is the basic idea of the look i want for the mini...
the idea is to use a NMM approach, with the high contrast, to give a sense of glossier armor than we usually see on Marines...

the final highlight color is a 10-1 mix of P3 Underbelly Blue and P3 Khador Red Base...
the final little spots of shadow are the original shading mix of 1-1-1 P3 Sanguine Base, P3 Coal Black, and P3 Armor Wash, cut with a few drops of water...

thanks for looking...
i hope you like him...

Post by: jah-joshua

thanks, Dr H...

here is the body after a few touch-ups, and with the helmet glued on...
i think the white and red will make a nice combo...

i've started highlighting the sword arm and the jump pack...
this is the first highlight mix of P3 Underbelly Blue and P3 Khador Red Base, at a 3-1 ratio...

the fine little shadows are the original shading mix of P3 Coal Black, P3 Sanguine Base, and P3 Armor Wash, at 1-1-1 with two drops of water...

i'm not sold on the little shadows on some of the pack's highlights...
i think i need to tone them down a bit, but i like the idea of the two long highlights running down the main engine housing...
i just need to play with it a little...

thanks for looking, and taking the time to comment...

JAHminis: "...and now I'm making your silver pants blue." @ 2014/07/29 20:58:32

Post by: jah-joshua

ask and ya shall receive, Senortaco...

engine glow step-by-step:

the basecoat is just for easy coverage...
it is a layer of P3 Exile Blue...

the next step is also for ease of coverage...
P3 Cygnar Blue Highlight...

this is where we get to the right color...
a solid layer of P3 Arcane Blue...

next, i gave the engines a heavy wash of P3 Turquoise Ink...
this gives a bit if definition to the shapes...

here i came back in with the Arcane Blue, and cleaned everything up...

then i started to make the glow...
this is a 1-3 mix of Arcane Blue and P3 Morrow White...

the next layer is not blended, like the previous layer, but just hitting the hard edges, and filling in the engines' hot spots...
it is a 1-6 mix of Arcane Blue and Morrow White...

the glow is finished with pure Morrow White...
hotta fiya!!!

here is a shot of the glow from the engines...
at the moment it is a bit strong, but will get a few washes of red ink to tone it down...

that's it...
engines basically done...

now i need to finish the wings, and make the Blood Chalice, so i can finish this bad boy...

thanks for looking...
i hope this was helpful...

cheers

Agreed. Think I might give this one ago.

How watered down is your paint btw? Whenever I try OSL or glow effects I think I might water mine down too much...

JAHminis: "...and now I'm making your silver pants blue." @ 2014/08/02 02:36:50

Post by: jah-joshua

@RiTides: thanks, and you are the second person to suggest the Dakka gallery...
i'm definitely thinking about it...

@Paradigm: it actually is really easy...
i have a pretty stylized way of painting, that doesn't require any real technical stuff like wet blending, or controlled glazing...
i just slap paint on in a way that brings the comic book vision in my head to life...
the simpler the better...

@Leviathus: bedankt jonge, glad you like what you see...

@Brother Payne: give it try, it's dead easy...
i don't thin my paints much...
if i'm not mixing a custom color, i just paint straight from the pot...
i do have a natural rhythm to the way i paint though, where i dip the tip of the brush into the lid of my pot for just a touch of paint, and then dip the tip with paint on it into a little puddle on my palette, and mix it on my thumb...
it's hard to visualize, but it's just my natural technique...

ok, on to the start of the next guy in the queue...
another version of my plastic Blood Angels Commander Dante, built from the Sanguinary Guard kit...
this step-by-step is just going to be for the gold, as the rest of the colors are covered in the Sanguinary Priest scheme...

i start with a solid base of pure P3 Battlefield Brown, to give an easy color to paint gold over...

next is a 1-1 mix of Battlefield Brown and P3 Rhulic Gold...

then a layer of pure Rhulic Gold...

then a layer of 1-1 Rhulic Gold and P3 Solid Gold...

finally, a heavy wash of 2-1 P3 Flesh Wash and P3 Sanguine Base, cut with a little water...

so, that is the first half of the stages...
now that i have my heavy shadows and lining, i will come back in and build up the golds again, leaving the shading...

thanks for looking, and taking the time to comment...

cheers
jah

@DarkHero: no worries, man...
i'm glad you found the engine glow step-by-step helpful...

@Charky: thanks, homie...
there is still more to come on the Apothecary, including the build a Chalice step-by-step, and then the finished product, of course...

i got a bit more work done on Dante...
this stage is crucial to me, since painting everything that will not be gold black helps me see what i'm working with...
now all the shapes (especially on the torso) are better defined, and i can better see where the shadows and highlights will go...

now i will start building up the golds again, after the heavy shading wash has turned it all copper...

i have started an album, on my JAHminis page on Facebook, that contains pics of various very rare minis that i have available to be commissioned, for anyone who is interested...
have a look, the album has some very rare gems in it...

Nice blue. I like the leather and the base is nice too. Hope it does well.

@Dr H: thanks, bud...
i had a lot of fun playing with the base, with the angled cork, the very red desert colors, and the different grasses...
this was also the first time i bothered painting the base as if the model is casting a bit of a shadow under him...

it was a real challenge to come up with a few good looking colors for the leather...
he has so much of it, and it would just be a jumble without a few different tones to make the variety of cloth, belts, and pouches stand apart...

i had fun with the blue of the coat, especially...
i like that it almost looks like a denim color...
if i ever have to paint jeans, i now have my mix...

i hope he does well, too...
i know the organizer of the event will be bidding, so maybe that will generate some action...
there will be a good number of awesome minis for auction at this event, if some of the WIP posts on Facebook are anything to go by...

@lliu: thanks, i hope you are enjoying Dakka...

@Paradigm: this is my one "good karma" piece of the year...
now it is back to being the mercenary paint-slinger that i am...

@Dysartes: ta very much...

alright, i don't normally do this, since extreme close-ups show off all the flaws in the painting, but here are some shots of the head and shoulders...
i had a lot of fun painting some texture into the hair and beard, and doing the little freehand Cygnar swans (which actually worked out first try on both sides!!!)...

as always, this guy was painted with P3 paints...
eventually, i will get around to the full paint write-up on my blog, once i get caught up with the articles i still need to write...
i'm only a year behind:(...

thanks for looking, and taking the time to comment...

cheers

hey Dakka...

now that Sturgis is done, i'm back to finishing up the Sangiunary Priest...
here is the custom Blood Chalice, converted from a melta bomb...
scroll up a bit on for stage 1...

here is stage 2, where i glued a few press-moulded skulls around the body of the melta bomb, to take away it's distinctive silhouette...
then i carved out the flat top a bit to make it look like the rim of a cup...

for stage 3, the final steps, i glued the pin into the hand, and the chalice onto the pin...
after this was dry, i sculpted a base to the cup under the hand, blended the skulls into the cup with a little Greenstuff, and then sculpted a bit of blood into the cup...

that's it...
3 simple stages, and we have a nice Blood Chalice that should, once it is primed and painted, look like a stock piece...
we'll see...

thanks for looking...
i hope you found this conversion guide helpful...

cheers

Post by: jah-joshua

@Dr H: thanks, bud...
the blood drops were to help break up the rim, as the skulls break up the sides...
anything that helps take away the recognizable shape of the melta bomb...
glad it worked out...

@lliu: thanks, i love your enthusiasm...

alright, i started painting the arm and Chalice...
unfortunately, as you can see, the glue set on the pin before i got the cup flush with the hand...
i thought i could let it slide, but the more i worked on the paint, the more the skinny pin really bothered me...
tonight i broke the cup off, and glued it back flush...
luckily, i didn't do much damage to the paint...
the next set of pics will show how much better it looks sitting flush...
until then, here are the first three stages of the paintjob...

first i laid down the basecoats...
next, i worked the gold up to the midtone, and then gave the gold and red it's shading wash...
finally, i did my black lining, and started building up my reds...

once again, thanks for looking, and taking the time to comment...

cheers
jah

hey Dakka...

i got the Blood Chalice glued down the way i had intended it to be originally...
i think it looks much better, now that the pin i used for the handle is not so blatant...
time to fix the bit of paint i rubbed off while making the fix, and get this bad boy done...

i also got the next layer of color done on the wings for the jump pack...
like the helmet, this penultimate layer is a 1-4 mix of P3 Underbelly Blue and Morrow White...
one highlight of pure white to go, and then it will be time to finish highlighting the red armor...

almost there...

thanks for looking...

cheers

Quick question that's just occurred to me, jah -your WIP shots always seem to show a pin/wire coming out of the component you're working on, held in the jaws of a pin vice. Do you just have a whole bunch of pin vices, or do you have something you stick the pins in when you change piece?

JAHminis: "...and now I'm making your silver pants blue." @ 2014/09/04 06:10:22

Post by: Warboss_Waaazag

That chalice arm is coming along quite nicely. Beautiful, crisp red on the shoulder pad.

JAHminis: "...and now I'm making your silver pants blue." @ 2014/09/04 06:17:59

Post by: jah-joshua

@Dysartes: i have two old pin vices, and three old Exacto handles, that i use...
so, basically, i could have five different pieces on the go at once, though i usually concentrate on one or two parts at a time...
the parts that are not in a vice or handle are laid out on a paper towel on my table, so i can always see what i've already done, and keep the look of the whole mini consistent in my head...

@Warboss_Waaazag: thanks, man...
still a few layers of red to go, but i have a nice solid color going right now, for sure...

thanks for your interest guys...

hey Dakka...

i got back from my morning surf session, surfing some big hurricane waves, and had a note from the post office saying that there was a big ass box waiting for me there...
as you can see, they were not lying...

this is the start of my next commission...
it will be Strike Force Cassius!!!
in the box we have 1 Rhino, 1 Whirlwind, 1 Predator, 1 Land Raider, 2x Hunter/Stalker, 2x Stormraven (Chibihawk), and 3x Vindicator...

it is only about one third of the commission, but a good place to start...
i am waiting for some Tyranid bits to arrive, while i finish up my two Blood Angels, so i can decorate the tanks to look like proper Tyranid Vet. armor...
there will be some cool markings to show that this is Cassius' force, and that they are all Vets of the Battle for Macragge...

i look forward to the chance to build a really unique army, that has not been seen much before...

cheers

thanks, guys...

yeah, it is going to be interesting, even for me, since i have no clue how things are going to work out...
the client wants it quick, so expect a lot of spray-can action, and sponge weathering...
should be a fun experiment...

i look forward to bring the Tyranid Hunter aspect to the fore, with 'Nid trophies, and lots of use of the Tyranid Hunter symbol, as well as some black accents to show these are Cassius' boys...

carrying on with the Sang. Priest, i've made some progress on the whites of the Narthecium arm...
now it is time to wash and highlight the metals, and get to work on the details, before i finish the white and red...
the chalice will be done last, as that seems to be the part i touch the most while painting this piece...

thanks for looking, and sticking with my slow, plodding, pace...

@Snrub: fin set-ups make a huge difference to how a surf board feels and acts...
it's a pretty serious science, and there are advocates of single fins, twin fins, tri fins, quad fins (me), five fins, and more...
tri fin is the most common, which favor the agility of the board, while quads are getting more popular, and favor the speed of the board...
i like to go fast...

for the glass vial, which part are you curious about, the black part, or the green part???

@Zambro: thanks, bud...
i enjoy pushing my limits with each mini...
the Ultras are still a week or two from seeing paint, but it should be a fun project...

speaking of Ultras, i got some more done on the sub-assemblies...
since all hatches, doors, and cockpits are going to be glued shut on this project, i don't have to worry about the interior detail...
on the Stalker and the Land Raider, i still need to clean all the mould lines off of the tracks, before i can glue them on, and then get the tops of the hulls glued on...
there are a lot of mould lines on those damn tracks!!!

i hope everyone is enjoying their weekend...

Well... That's even more learnt about surfing . How do those gnarly dreads of yours affect your surfing? I can only imagine that they weigh you down when wet.

for the glass vial, which part are you curious about, the black part, or the green part???
Black. But an explanation of both would be good.

JAHminis: "...and now I'm making your silver pants blue." @ 2014/09/14 04:31:13

Post by: jah-joshua

Snrub, i use two of my dreadlocks to make a ponytail, and keep them out of my way when i surf, like the pic on page 1...
i don't feel the weight, to be honest, as nothing, in the moment, exists besides the wave, and the moves that i am doing on each different section of the wave...
it is amazing how i can be in a ton of pain from an injury or cut while paddling out, but as soon as i start paddling for a wave, i don't feel any pain at all...
it all disappears as i ride the wave, and then comes flooding back as i paddle back out...
the mind is incredible...

for the vials, there is a breakdown on colors on page 2, i believe...
the black is just straight black paint, since the metal band defines the shape of the vial, without having to highlight the black, plus all of the wiring behind it will be black...
the green bit is just a matter of deciding what angle the arm will be glued on at, and then making that solid white line that delineates the full and empty part of the vial...

no fancy blending, or techniques, just a solid build up of the green, a stark white line, and straight white on black dots for the bubbles...
simple...

cheers
jah

JAHminis: "...and now I'm making your silver pants blue." @ 2014/09/15 02:24:09

Post by: jah-joshua

thanks, Dashel...
you hit the nail on the head with the word skill...
nothing about my painting is natural talent...
it is a lot of hard work, and a lot of hard thinking...
i am nowhere near as good as i would like to be, but as i push my boundaries i analyze every mistake i see in my painting, figure out how to fix it, and then do the work...
it's all about how much dedication you have to the hard work of making a mini match the vision that you have in your head...

with that said, i have started adjusting the shading and highlighting on the shoulder pad...
i think i figured out how i will handle this shape, with the crazy new (for me) highlighting style on this mini...

i got the gold all smoothed out on the Chalice, and ready for highlights, but for some reason the camera didn't want to focus on the Chalice, and the shoulder pad, at the same time...
more angles tomorrow, instead...

thanks for looking...
we are almost at the end of this one, i swear...

i'm pretty happy with how the little details turned out, like the liquid in the vial, the hazard-striped hose, and the helix symbol...

thanks for sticking with me through this epic journey in painting a single arm...

Post by: jah-joshua

thanks, guys...

@Snrub: i have had a lot of fun playing with this almost NMM style on the red armor...

@Paradigm: i would guess the i have put at least 80 hours into this guy, so far...
not sure, but it has been a lot...
it takes a bit of work to push the painting beyond anything i have done before, as far as trying a new approach to the style of reds i have previously painted...
then there is just the sheer amount of tiny details to paint, which is pretty dense...

here we go...
almost done...
having glued the arm on, the photos are a bit better, with the one little piece (the arm) being less "in your face", and the harmony of all four main components making for a more pleasant piece to look at...
i can't wait to put the jump pack and wings on...

thanks, guys...

@Dysartes: all i needed to do was make the highlight running down the main engine housing thinner...

so, the jump pack is glued on, now it's time to finish the wings...
i'm not sure if i am happy with the broad highlight on the main engine housing, but i will let it ruminate for a bit while i do the wings...
i may need to do a very thin final highlight down the middle of the curve...

@fireangel: with the four foot (now blonde from the sun and surf) dreadlocks, i'm also a hit with the ladies...
hahahahahaha

right...
as i put the finishing touches onto the Sang. Priest, and get ready to jump back into painting Dante, i am finishing the builds on the first set of vehicles for Strike Force Cassius...
these are almost ready for some spray-can action...
i just need to file a few more mould lines, and fill a couple little gaps...
the sponson weapons are not glued together yet, as i want to be sure i can get good coverage on all the fiddly bits, but are pushed together to give the client a little something more solid to look at than a pile of random bits...

@Dysartes: the Sang. Priest will be done this week...
luckily, this job did not have a deadline, allowing my to just concentrate on trying a new style of red, and working it until i got it right...

@Paradigm & lliu: thanks, it's been a lot of fun painting this model, and sharing the process, even if it has taken too long...

i got the skull for the base done...
i went with the browner greys, so the color would not compete with the white on the Sanguinary Priest...

step one was the same as the whites, with a basecoat of pure P3 Greatcoat Grey...

step two was a coat of pure P3 Bastion Grey, leaving a bit of the basecoat showing where i wanted to define the recessed areas...

step three was a layer of pure P3 Trollblood Highlight, covering a little less area than step two...

the final step, number four, was a 1-3 mix of Trollblood Highlight and P3 Morrow White...

and that's it, a well defined skull, that is not too bright, so should not draw the eye away from the helmet of the Priest...

next up, the base, and then final pics!!!

thanks for looking...
i hope everyone had a good weekend...

until then i have a couple of last step-by-steps to share...
this one is for the rock under his foot...

i started with a base of P3 Bloodstone...

the first layer is a 2-1 mix of Bloodstone and P3 Menoth White Highlight...

this was then given a wash using the old GW Ogryn Flesh wash...

the next layer was a 1-1 mix of my highlight color...

followed by a 1-2 mix of the same...

then another wash layer to tone it down a bit, and blend things together...

and finally, a bit of pure Menoth White Highlight to make the corners pop...

hopefully, you guys think it looks good...

i'll share the step-by-step for the actual base tomorrow, and then reveal the finished product this weekend...

thanks for looking...

cheers
jah

Post by: jah-joshua

yeah, Dysartes, i rocked it...
ok, bad joke...

here is the quick rundown of the base...
same colors as the rock...
now it just needs a little grass, once the mini is glued on...

basecoat is P3 Bloodstone...

then a layer of GW Ogryn Flesh...

next, a drybrush layer of 2-1 Bloodstone and P3 Menoth White Highlight...

then a drybrush of the same at 1-2...

another layer of wash...

then a drybrush of pure Menoth White Highlight...

and finished by cleaned up the side with some P3 Thamar Black...

easy peazy, lemon squeezy...

the spot where the sand is missing is where the mini will be glued down, and the random hole in the sand is where a clump of tall grass will go...
then a little static grass around the rock, plus a random spot clump and there, and he will be good to go...

next update will be the finished mini!!!

thanks for sticking with me...

cheers
jah

@Dysartes: bad puns all around!!!

here it is, the moment you have all been waiting for...
the finished Blood Angels Sanguinary Priest...

this is just a set of quick photos i took with my desk lamp...
i'll get some better ones as soon as i set up my studio light and tripod...
i'll try and get the depth-of-field issue sorted out in the last photo for the next round of pics, too...

i hope you have all enjoyed my first attempt at documenting the step-by-step process of my approach to painting, and found it helpful...

thanks for looking...
i hope you like him...

hey Dakka...

sorry for that week of silence, but i was at Death's Door since last Saturday night:(...
i sat down to work last Saturday, when it suddenly felt like someone had stabbed a spear through my lower-left abdomen...
turns out i was having a bout of Ulcerative Colitis, something which i had never heard of before, but am well aquainted with now:(...
by Wednesday i was fighting for my life, as i had lost a huge amount of blood in 24 hours...
for some reason, tonight, one week later, all the pain just decided to go away!!!
so, yeah, happy to be alive right now, and ready to get back to work...

@lliu: thanks for checkin' in...

here's a little peek at what i was working on when i got hit with beat stick in the stomach...

i hope everyone is having a good weekend...

cheers

Hi jah, this sounds really bad. I just had a look, what ulcerative colitis is...but i'm glad you feel better at the moment.

The priest looks great. This might be one of the most beautyful minis i've ever seen! The clean and crisp look is just amazing.

@Boba Fett: yeah, it was rough week, but i'm tough as nails...
i did lose a lot of weight though, and i didn't have much to spare...
now none of my shorts fit:(...

glad you like the Priest...
it was really fun to try a new style of red...
i like the clean and crisp look, too...
the Ultras will be the exact opposite...

@Tsukuru & lliu: thanks...

@Dr H: i had a phone consultation with a doctor on Sunday to describe the symptoms, and see what i could grab at the pharmacy...
an anti-inflammatory med, an anti-infection med, some Peracetamol for the pain, and that's it...
first time i've talked to a doctor, or taken any meds, since i was 15...
that's how serious it was...

mostly i just kept drinking the electrolite liquids, with lots of potassium and glucose in them, from the pharmacy...
i ate as much veggie soup as i could, which was not much, and fought through the pain...
luckily, i only seemed to have one major symptom per day to fight against...

now back to painting!!!
i think i need to find a bigger backdrop to photograph these things...
they're a little bigger than single minis...

aside from the Stalker, i have also made some good progress on the Land Raider...
lots to do still, but getting a nice solid blue to build the weathering over is most important...

thanks for sticking with me, everyone...

cheers,
jah

thanks guys...
i'm on the mend, and hard at work...
i haven't shared my work the last few days, because i wanted to create my Strikeforce Cassius paint scheme without any outside influence...
i'll finish the Stalker, and then do step-by-step for the Land Raider...

@evildrcheese: the Sanguinary Priest is only the first BA mini for this client...
if you look back to page 3 or 4, you will see i have already started on a plastic version of Dante, built from this same kit...

so, on Facebook, it is popular to put up old photos for Throwback Thursday...
this week i decided to start doing the same with minis on my JAHminis page...
i figured i might as well share here, too...

the first mini in this new feature is a custom commission for Grey Knights Supreme Grand Master Lord Kaldor Draigo, from 2012...
i had a lot of fun building and painting this guy...
the challenge was to do something different than the first commission i had to build a Grand Master from Marneus Calgar's body...

i hope you enjoy this Throwback...

thanks, everybody...

i'm glad the first Throwback Thursday was a hit...
it is nice to look back every once in a while, and see what i have done before, and how things progress and evolve with the painting and conversions...

today i got the last of the supplies i was waiting on for this Ultramarines commission...
now i have 'Nid heads to decorate the tanks, and materials to base the Stormravens...
yeah!!!
it only spent two months sitting in customs, stressing me the hell out:(...

after seeing the horrible state of the Finecast minis in the stores, back in the first year it was released, i am amazed by how perfect all of these casts are...
everything is straight, and one tiny bubble out of six sprues...
the material feels stiff, but not brittle, and no details are miscast...
based on these casts, i have just done a complete 180 on this material, and will eat my words...
these guys have given me the confidence to buy Farsight and the Commander suit i have had my eye on since their release...

GW also threw in a free hardback Nagash notebook, which will make a perfect paint journal, with my order...
that's right, GW giving away free stuff!!!
between this, and perfect Finecast, you could knock me over with a feather right now...
i am shocked!!!

i hope everyone is having a good weekend...

20 25mm base toppers...
5 40mm toppers...
fine grit...
slate chunks...

since i bought the Urban basing kit in 2008, i was pleased to see that all of the components of this kit are different from that one, which had the same type of parts, but different details, and thicknesses to the slate...

i hope this is helpful...

no worries, guys...
unfortunately, the kit is now sold out in America, so if you are thinking about grabbing it from Oz or Blighty, i'd get it soon...

here is a sneak peek at the first tank in the Strike Force Cassius Ultramarines commission...
the brief from the client was, " make them dark, and remember that they have been to hell and back"...

this is the most weathered any of the tanks will be...
some will have a lot less, and some will be in between...
i threw everything, and the kitchen sink, at this one, and i'm not quite done yet...
it's been fun to go to town on this Stalker, working from the idea that this army is fighting in the very toxic environment of a Tyranid invasion...

thanks for looking...

thanks, guys...
i may have overdone it a bit...
most of the other tanks will have a bit less, but the Vindicators will be as beat up as this Stalker, i think, as i imagine they crash through a lot of walls...

it's Throwback Thursday on Ye Olde Facebook again...
since i shared my version of Kaldor Draigo, built around Marneus Calgar's body in 2012, last week, i figured this week i would share the first Grey Knight i built for a client in 2009, using the same body...
after i had finished this job, i felt i could have done more to emphasize the Grey Knights armor, so i was happy to get another crack at this conversion...
the first time around was fun, but i always see things i could have done better, every time i finish a mini...

thanks for looking...

Ah, I remember the day a long time ago (the day before yesterday) when I realized that airbrushes need compressors. I know that sounds like I'm an idiot, but, anyways, I swore to myself I would not use an airbrush ever. Doing this with a brush is awesome, Jah. That's my inspiration of the day (or week).

JAHminis: "...and now I'm making your silver pants blue." @ 2014/11/05 03:31:53

Post by: jah-joshua

@Zambro: thanks, bud...
to be honest, it doesn't take that long...
in fact, this is going quicker that my single mini painting, as there is a lot less really fine detail to worry about...
i just grab a bigger brush, and go crazy on the basecoat...
everything else is just like painting an infantry model...

@lliu: glad i can show that painting can stay simple, and still look awesome...
i'm sure i'll get a compressor someday, and hook up the airbrush i've had sitting around for twenty years, but not yet...

here is a quick update of the weapons for the Land Raider...
they are almost ready for assembly...
a couple of parts, like the Heavy Bolters, still need a bit of clean-up on the black after the heavy rust wash...
then all the orange will get a wash of Vallejo Smoke to tone it down a bit...
then a sponging of P3 Pig Iron for the chipped paint, and everything will get glued together...
by tomorrow nights session, the super glue will be well dry, and ready for touch-ups...

tomorrow night i will finish up the Tyranid Hunter symbols, and both tanks will be ready for varnish...
then it is on to finishing the Stormraven, and deciding which tank the client wants next...

thanks for looking, and taking the time to comment...
i always appreciate it...

hey Dakka...

it's Throwback Thursday again, already...
that week sure flew by...

this week i have my first ever "display quality" commission from back in 2010...
The Butcher from Privateer Press, from the Khador faction for Warmachine...
this is the 2010 alternate sculpt of this character, and in my opinion, the coolest version of his four different versions...

the brief from the client was to take the studio scheme to the next level...
i pushed my red further than ever before, and got to use a display plinth for the first time...
doing the frost spreading out from his feet was a fun experiment...

thanks for looking...
i'm off to finish freehanding the Tyranid Hunter symbol on the Stalker and Land Raider now...

hey Dakka...

the Land Raider is all put together...
since i took this photo, i have toned down the mud with a darker brown so it doesn't look so much like the rust, finished the lenses and lights, and got about half way through painting the Tyranid Hunter symbols...

now that I have the paint scheme figured out, the rest of the vehicles should go a lot faster...
i will have to remember to take some step-by-step pics for the next tank i put together...

tonight i will put some finishing touches on this Land Raider, and the Stalker, and then get back to work on the Stormraven...

have a great weekend, everyone...

JAHminis: "...and now I'm making your silver pants blue." @ 2014/11/11 04:44:25

Post by: jah-joshua

thanks, guys...

@lliu: the Tyranid Hunter symbol is a Warrior head, with a gladius through it...
you can see it sculpted onto the Ultramarines Hunter Veteran models...
i don't think i will be painting any Nids, aside from a few trophy parts i will add to some of the vehicles, but who knows...
anything could happen...

@Boba Fett: thanks...
being a display model, getting that harmonious look was very important...
seen as how it is just meant to sit in a cabinet to be admired, the paintjob had better achieve that...

here is the first finished tanks...
i went with a very angular style on the Tyranid Hunters symbol, to make it easier to recreate across all of the vehicles...

the majority of the tanks will be a bit less beat up, but i wanted to throw everything at this first one, to see what works well, and what can be trimmed from the process...
the darker blue was at the client's request, and the orange rust was a good way to give it some visual impact rather quickly...
the metal scratches on the edges are also a simple way to speed up the process, but make it so the eye does not read the lack of edge highlights...
the whole idea is to come up with a quick process for painting an army...

as i said, there will be much less of the damage on flat surfaces for the rest of the vehicles, but the style will not change...
i am happy with the rust, battered symbols, and scratched edges, so that will be the main feature of the weathering on the rest of the army...

thanks for looking, and taking the time to comment....

cheers
jah

The Serfs that were supposed to maintain those tanks will be shot. I agree it looks more like rust than mud on the land raider.

It is very well done, but IMHO it is more for traitor legions than Ultramarines , i always thought of them of spit-polishing their equipment to perfection. (even in a warzone)

Post by: jah-joshua

thanks, guys...

@Jehan-reznor: i completely agree with you, and wrote almost the exact same thing in my Facebook post yesterday, but the customer gets what the customer wants...
my job is to bring the client's vision to life...

@Paradigm: i also want to get the idea across that the planets that the Tyranids have invaded are very corrosive environments, where the very air is trying to destroy things..

here is the Land Raider, in all its beat-up glory...
yesterday i talked about the choices i made with the weathering, so today i want to share a bit about the actual color scheme...
all of the weapons will be painted black, to represent the righteous vengeance of the Chaplain's arsenal...
the Ultramarines symbol will always be on a blue background, representing the colors of the Chapter...
the Tyranid Hunter symbol will always be on a black background, to represent that this is Chaplain Cassius' personal army...

thanks for looking...
i hope you like it...

That is one beat-up Land Raider. Nice freehand, and effective weathering, jah, but it goes a wee bit too far for my liking - having said that, and as you've already pointed out, that's the customer's call, not mine.

JAHminis: "...and now I'm making your silver pants blue." @ 2014/11/14 05:54:28

Post by: jah-joshua

@Dysartes: i agree, i did take it a bit too far...
i don't usually paint with this style, and went a little crazy...
i toned it down a bit on the Land Raider compared to the Stalker, and will be dialing it back even more on the other tanks, while still sticking to the basic look i have committed to on these first two vehicles...

@lliu: i'm not sure if there will be any more Land Raiders, but there are many more tanks and flyers to come...

it is Throwback Thursday again...
today i am winding the clock back to 2009, and sharing my first attempt at battle damage...
this the White Scars 3rd Company Captain, Kor'sarro Khan...
i learned a lot on this paintjob, especially where the chipping is concerned...
the main mistake on this mini was making the white armor so bright that i couldn't highlight the chips, leaving them a bit flat...
next time i try this scheme, i will stop at a light grey, so i can actually highlight the white armor...

thanks for looking...
i hope you are all enjoying the little Throwback Thursday interludes...

In my opinion, that guy is an awesome little mini! Will you be doing any Dark Angels, or Necrons?

thanks, lliu...
he was fun to paint...
i actually enjoy painting white, even though most people find it a chore...
i don't know if i will ever get hired to paint a Necron, but i have a Lord i have been toying around with for years, trying to make him look ceramic, like the most modern kitchen knives...
i'm sure i will eventually get around to a Dark Angel, since Marines are my favorite...

i'm not quite ready to show the Stormraven yet, so here is a little look at my new paint journal...
GW sent this out with the last order for the Ultramarines commission...
i'm not going to argue with a free Nagash notebook...
it is definitely an improvement over the loose sheets of paper i have kept my notes on for years now...

i needed to work out the freehand design for the vehicles...
the actual Tyranid Hunter Veteran models have a more organic looking Tyranid Warrior head on their shoulder pads, but i wanted something that would be a little bit easier to draw on a lot of vehicles, and keep it symetrical...
this is pretty stylized, maybe even a bit too much, but the customer is cool with it...

first i did a little sketch to get a feel for what i didn't like, and then a line drawing of the next idea, which i did like...
a little graffiti style 'Nid...

it's one thing to make a little sketch in a book, but it is a whole other ball game when you go to fit the ideas in to space you have on a mini, and deal with the tiny size...
i find freehand to be the hardest part of mini painting, and always have to psych myself up when it comes time execute it...
i do enjoy the challenge, though...

thanks for looking...

hey Dakka...

here is the start of the first Stormraven...
at this point i am cleaning up all of the blue (P3 Exile Blue) and black (P3 Thamar Black)...
after everything is tidied up, i will tone down the orange rust (P3 Khador Red Highlight) with a heavy wash of Vallejo Smoke...
then it will be ready for decals, freehand, and battle damage...

Nice job on the white scar, do white scars have terminator armor? i always thought they rather would use a bike than make use of slow armor.

i guess the deep strike puts them where they need to be...

@SBG: thanks, bud...

it's Throwback Thursday again...
since i showed off my first attempt at battle damage last week, i'll share my second attempt this time...
this is Logan Grimnar, from 2009, which was a year where my painting took a big leap forward...
working with more mixes for the transitions of my layers, and trying a few more advanced techniques...
it was fun to see how detailed i could make the chipped armor...

Will the flying fish have magnetised weapons, jah, or just the one loadout?

Nice use of the P3 range, too - I wouldn't have thought of Exile Blue for Ultramarines.

JAHminis: "...and now I'm making your silver pants blue." @ 2014/11/22 04:55:29

Post by: jah-joshua

@Dysartes: this Stormraven gets lascannons, missles, and hurricane bolters glued on...
not sure what the next one will have, probably assault cannon and multi-melta...
i like the darker blue, and the client requested a darker scheme anyway...
it reminds me of Dave Andrews' Ultras from WD a few years back...
i enjoy using P3 to create GW schemes, like using P3 Trollblood Highlight for the base of the Space Wolves scheme...

i got the blue and black cleaned up, and rust toned down on the Stormraven...
then i went crazy with a sponge and some P3 Pig Iron...
now it is time for decals, freehand, and then dirty streaks for the leading edges...
next i need to build the base, and paint the weapons...

thanks for looking...
i hope you like it...

hey Dakka...

i got the base built for the Stormraven, and started with the paint...

this is the first time i've had the chance to use the bigger base...
it's nice to have a little more space to work with, and be able to get more vertical...
i like these ruined walls 40k walls...

there is a purple and green undertone to the rubble that the camera is not really picking up:(...
the green is concentrated around the plastic walls, and resin base toppers, that will be verdigrised bronze...
the purple and green are more noticeable in hand, and make for a much more pleasing look than just grey rubble...

Fantastic base, Jah!
I can see some hints of the green tone in the pictures, but not so much the purple. I'm not an 'artist' or even a 'technical painter', so appologies if this is a silly question, but what does the green / purple tones add to the base? Why green and purple? And how did you decide to where to put the different tones?
I think the fact that you're unable to picture it properly makes it harder for me to understand the effect it gives.

Also, aren't you worried about the walls snapping off the base? There is only a thin join between the base and walls - I assume you did something more than just glue them?

JAHminis: "...and now I'm making your silver pants blue." @ 2014/11/28 04:27:29

Post by: jah-joshua

thanks, guys...

@TheDraconicLord: steal away, mate, it's what i do, too...

@Zambro: the purple wash is very subtle, but is more visually interesting, and less harsh, than using straight black to shade the rubble...
the green is focused around the walls and broken pieces on the ground, to look like some of the verdigris has run off the bronze in the moist, Tyranid infested, atmosphere...
the next pics will give a better idea of what is going on, now that the base is done...
the walls are very sturdy, as the base of the walls is about a centimeter wide...
i just made sure to use new superglue, so the bond is strong...

Happy Thanksgiving, for those who celebrate the day...
i hope you all had a great day watching football, and stuffing your face...

since it is Thursday, here is a special edition of Thanksgiving Throwback Thursday (that's some nice alliteration)...
as this is a day to celebrate what we are thankful to have in our lives, i am thankful for clients that allow me to make cool new versions of old static characters...
this is my favorite piece out of my portfolio...
Blood Angels Death Company Tycho, from 2012, built from the Sanguinary Guard and Death Company boxes, with a bit of Greenstuff work to complete the look...
the pose is based on a really cool piece of Adrian Smith artwork...

thanks, ephrael...
here is the painting article from my blog...
this is from before i started doing WIP pics, but the recipies are all there...

http://jahminis.blogspot.mx/2013/12/hello-everyone.html

the Stormraven is done!!!
my biggest miniature yet, and a lot of fun to paint...

since this is a rush job, i had to reach a happy medium between speed and a cool paintjob...
i feel like the rust in the crevices, and the chipped metal edges work as a great cheat to save the time of shading and edge highlighting...
the rust is done with washes, and the edges with a sponge, making for a fast technique to get a visually interesting model...

in the same vein, instead of working out a realistic shade and highlight for the cockpit canopies, i just put down a solid color, and then painted in detailed reflections of the 'Nid invasion...
hopefully, this draws the eye away from the fact that there is no shading and highlighting...
it was a really fun little experiment...
while it could be refined a lot for a competition piece, i think it works for a tabletop piece...

thanks for looking...
i hope you like it...

Hey Jah, great stuff mate!

That StormRaven is great for a 'tabletop' peice, your method for that is similar to my own as far as block colours shading the recesses and then weathering/highlighting and the canopy looks great, I LOVE unusual ideas like that especially when they work so well and are a real point of difference to a model. Have you considered trying something I attempted a while ago on a Valkyrie by printing computer screen/targeting images on clear acetate and cutting them out and gluing them into the canopy so it was still translucent but had the targeting images showing which also changed the colour of the canopy. could be something you can work with especially with your skill set?

Loving the throwback images too it's great to see where you've come from with your learning curve, and sometimes it takes one image to fire someone's imagination! the Tycho model you did is totally getting stolen and used in my own force I like the way the armour is black but not black so the chips in black are seen, do you highlight any edges with your technique or just get a solid colour/shading and then chip it?

Keep up the amazing work mate, you're one of my favorite artists!

Damo

thanks, everybody...
it is nice to do something a bit original, since it often feels like everything we do as mini painters is derivative, or influenced by someone else's ideas, since before we even get our hands on a mini, it has already been painted by someone in a studio...
this is even more pronounced with Space Marine Chapters, since we are working in the constraints of predetermined schemes...
with my Mephiston and Tycho conversions, Calgar Grey Knight conversions, Heralds of Light Captain, my Salamanders Captain's flames, and now these canopies, i feel like i have been able to do something we don't see every day, which is a good feeling...

@Zambro: close-ups are coming tomorrow, after i take a round of proper photos tonight...

@Paradigm: i would actually enjoy a chance to paint a detailed cockpit interior, and do the glowing insturment effect, but on this job i have not been given the time to paint interiors...

@nerdfest09: I don't have time to try printing out things, and working with the interior:(...
on Tycho, there is a bit of edge highlighting, but i tried to go with the French zenithal highlighting style, much more than the GW edge highlighting style...
it was all about building up the greys, so that the chips would show...

it's Throwback Thursday again...
this week i have my Golden Bolter Silver medal, and People's Choice award, winner...
this is the Games Day 2008 Space Marine Captain, painted as a Salamanders Chapter Marine...
i wanted to try my hand at realistic flames ever since i saw them painted on a car on Overhaulin'...
when the Bolter and Chainsword painting contest came up in 2010, i knew i had found my chance to give it a whirl...

given the chance to try this scheme again, i would like to refine the flames a little more, but i was pretty happy with the result the first time around...

thanks for looking, and taking the time to comment...
i always appreciate it...

cheers

i hear ya, hungryp...
i'd rather do a step-by-step without missing any steps, though...

it's Throwback Thursday again...
this time around it we are taking it back to 2009, with my Heralds of Light Captain...
an obscure Chapter, i believe this is the first ever painted example of these guys...
when i was commissioned to paint this guy, the client asked me to paint the star Chapter Badge on the kneepad, and a flaming tower Company Badge on the shoulder and shield...
a year after doing this paintjob, i was pleasantly surprised to see that this designed was used for a painting article in the Bolter & Chainsword e-zine...
this was my first time designing something that ended up in the 40K canon...
it's a great feeling...

Hey Jah, great looking miniatures! You definitely have a lot of talent and an keen eye for detail. I really like the Blood Angels you've done, especially the Sanguinary Priest. When you layered on the colors on the Sanguinary Priest's wings, what ratio did you thin your layer paints to and what did you thin them with?

thanks, guys...

@BigMekGearGrinda: i don't really thin my paints in the traditional manner...
i paint straight out of the pot, unless i am mixing colors...
i have a little drop of water on my palette, which i dip my brush into after it has a drop of paint on the tip...
just a touch of paint from the pot, and a touch of water from the palette, mixed on the back of my thumb in a couple of quick strokes...
this is the way i have painted for thirty years, so it is fast and intuitive, even if it sounds confusing...
i don't use thinners, or retarders...

here are the finished pics of the Whirlwind i teased before Christmas...
i have wanted to paint this kit since it was released, so i enjoyed this one...
there is just something so cool about the big missile launchers...

i got the full step-by-step set of pics while i was working on this and the second Stormraven, so i will have the breakdown of this scheme as soon as i get through editing all those pics...

thanks for looking...

cheers
jah

Thanks Jah! Very simple and straight forward, sounds like the drop of water does the trick.

thanks, guys...

@BigMekGearGrinda: i have also been experimenting with ink instead of water...
it gives a slightly richer color to the paint...
when i'm repainting the blue on these Ultramarines vehicles, to tidy up the orange rust wash, i've been dipping the brush in blue ink...
it works the same as water, but makes my P3 Exile Blue paint look just that little bit nicer...

here is the second Stormraven in this commission...
i had fun with the canopies again, and switched it up a little, too...
close-ups next time, and the full step-by-step for the paint scheme soon...

thanks for looking...

cheers,
jah

That's a very slick idea Jah! What a bonus, cleans up the mini while deepening the color. I'll definitely give that a try. I've also been thinking about using acrylic inks to make custom washes the Les Bursley way.

By the way, the canopies on your Stormravens are righteous!

Are those Tyrranocyte Spores in the windshield?

@BigMekGearGrinda: i get a lot of use out of the P3 washes, and a fair bit from the inks...
i usually use inks for glazing down highlights...

@lliu: i think this shape is more like the Mucolid spore...

here are the close-ups...
sorry the pics aren't the best...
now i need to edit the step-by-step photos...

thanks for looking...
i hope you like it...

cheers,

thanks, Paradigm...

Throwback Thursday again...
this time we take it back to 2009, and a mini, Mephiston, that got a lot of mixed reviews...
this was my first time trying to make a more modern version of a venerable old mini...
working with Greenstuff press-molds for the first time, this process saved me from a lot of fine detail sculpting that I just don't have the ability to do...
one of these days i will have to try and make an even better version of Mephiston...

thanks for looking...
i hope you like him...

cheers

Your Mephiston conversion is awesome Jah! The greenstuff work is outstanding. I'm still trying to wrap my head around how you were able to press mold those details. It seems like you would have had to do some sculpting to pull this off. Great paint job as usual!

thanks, guys...
Mephiston was a big challenge to pull off...

@BigMekGearGrinda: the only real sculpting is the cuffs on the gauntlets...
the rest is either press mold (like the chest and shoulders), rolled and cut Greenstuff (like the vials, cables, and hair), of flattened and cut (like the cloak)...
all work-arounds to hide my inability to sculpt...

here's a little peek at what i'm working on right now...
looks like Yertle, the tank stacking turtle, was here...
i get to paint a trio of my favorite Rhino variant, the Vindicator!!!

it is 10:30 PM on Wednesday in Mexico...
just a few hours until i'm back with Throwback Thursday...
what will it be, GW or PP???

cheers

hey Dakka...

Throwback Thursday again...
this week it's from 2012...

i am a huge fan of the different Forge World characters in Terminator armor...
the detail is just incredible...
this one, Lord Hextor Rex, has got some very fine battle damage sculpted on, and when i was hired to paint a version of the Grey Knights Grand Master Lord Khaldor Draigo using this model, i was excited to get to paint a dirty, beat-up version of a Grey Knights model...

thanks for looking...
i hope you like him...

hey Dakka...

alright, time to get back to some actual WIP stuff...

here are the first four steps of the Ultramarines scheme...
first is a black spray (pic 1)...
then i tape the parts i want to remain black (pic 2)...
then i spray a navy blue, and remove the masking tape (pic 3)...
then come the proper basecoats, P3 Thamar Black, P3 Exile Blue, P3 Pig iron for the steel, P3 Molten Bronze for the eagles and skulls, and P3 Bloodstone for the cockpit glass (pic 4)...

four more pics to come tomorrow...
i hope they will be helpful...
