Wow Ramos for some reason I've not seen your blog in ages. WM's Red Scorpions are very nice I think the colour choice is spot on for them.

Also looking forward to watching your Marines Errant force grow.

I'll be watching more closely from now on

Ramos, great progress on the terminators and your flier. I don't think you've posted any pictures of your fliers base yet but you may want to check out Solars display board that you'll be having your awesome marines on. You may want to see about having the base have a solid concrete look, or perhaps a metal grating or something to help have it fit in with Solar's board, just my two cents.

Once again Solar, let me know if I'm right in stating that the Red Scorpions and Marines Errant will be in a general rubble free environment.

Great updates! Can't remember the last time I visited your blog (if ever?) but the latest marines, termies and fighter details are all incredible! Freehand on the razorback a couple of pages ago is just perfect as well.

@Gits: Thanks!!

@GiraffeX: Thank you! Glad you like the color. It was an experiment in toning them down with the oil wash, and Im glad its one that turned out like it did! And lemme tell ya- Its gonna be HEAVEN to paint a color other than gray!!

@SL: IM PAINTING NOW ALWAYS PAINTING ALL THE TIME *panics*

@WM: Yikes. Hope we all finish in time!

@MT: Yeeeeah.... they all just kinda DS'd onto the painting table and are refusing to leave! Hopefully finishing their colors will encourage them to leave xD

@IA: I havent even started building the fighter's base yet- mostly for the reasons you mentioned. Im definitely gonna check with him after I finish these Scorpions. Then Ill whip up a nice base for it! Ive noticed, though, that the flyer stand is a royal pain in the ass to set up. Gonna need to figure something out for it.
I do LOVE the board hes building though. Damn fine work!

@CC (Wow so many handy initials around here ) : Thanks a ton! Definitely stick around- More are rapidly approaching!

And tonight's update:
Just about done! These guys are now at home on their bases, which I've built to look like a torn up road.

You might notice that the Mantis Warriors took a casualty, rather than the Tiger Claws. I figured that color would fit a little better- orange might have been too bright. But Dont worry Ice: Your boys in orange were so nice to lend the tail from a fighter plane for the sergeant's base!

Tomorrow they'll be done. Just gotta pop on silver, red and a couple details!

No worries..

The Loyalist display will mostly be rubble free. With the amount of work left to do, I will add as I go . The base color is more important. Most of the GW grey line of colors should be fine.

Don't panic. Paint.

I plan to get Git's speeders off the display floor. It'll be nice if I can do that for your flyer as well. Assuming it's the standard + shaped stand. So you could go with a generic grey for now or do something fancy and it won't alter the look.

Without further delay, the Red Scorpion Teminators are complete!

Very nice sculpts with a TON of detail!! The FW model of Culln in particular was a real beauty. Though i have to say, Im glad that Im done with Gray for a while! Here are individual shots- Very big and VERY zoomable!

Bwahaha!! Your end is nigh, devotees of the Tyrant. You "Wardens" shall become prisoners to His divine judgement!

@Novelist47: Thanks! Its actually a Mantis Warrior to fit with the Badab War theme (Its the very army our dear Gitsplitta plays, btw )

So In the gathering of bitz and models sent to me by WM, I got a surprise for my future Counts-as Ezekiel- and my was I surprised...
It was a FW Libby!

From what I understand, Due to a bubble in the cables on his left side WM sent out for a new one from FW. (I removed the cable in its entirety- to be replaced later).
Inconvenient for him, but a great boon to me!!

Also in the pack of bitz was this weird (and rather giant) 2-handed sword. so that got me thinking of a few poses for the model, including this one, which Im quite pleased with:

The sword will be sunk a little into the ground (works well due to its large size), and the left arm will be one of the pointing arms from the assault kit, I believe.

Whatever the case, DAMN I like this model!

Nice. I love that figure. Need to get one myself. Reminds me: place FW pre-order soon!

Instead of sinking the sword in thecearth, how about sticking it in a fallen enemy? You might build up the base a little so 'Zeke is high enough for the sword to rest comfortably.

As to you, Ice.... Well...

You're next!

Originally, I had wanted to use YBs plan of using a marine body at the base of the sword. Unfortunately, the base is TINY and I fear that adding anything else would overcrowd the miniature. Were he a Termi libby, Id of gone with the dead base. As it stands, though, it looks like it'll have to wait for another day.

After a day of scraping off mold lines, the army finally stands!

Daaaamn it this is a lot of footslogging models @_@ *ignores the fact that this is still short of a full squad of Boyz*

I still have arms, heads and backpacks to clean, but at least its good to see some progress beyond a pile of plastic shavings!

I also found a neat way to practice playing online. Its a program called Vassal, and it's essentially a digital tabletop! You can easily download different modules for it that give you the ability to play DnD, 40k, Fantasy.... The best part is that its TOTALLY FREE!! If anyone wants to get a game or two in sometime, gimmie a shout! I can always use the practice!

http://www.vassalengine.org/
^link to the engine- Its a bit difficult to set up. I can help anyone whos interested (Also, Im writing a tutorial... eventually xD)

TO THE PRIMERMOBILE!

FINALLY got every little last bit and bob cleaned, and everything is set up on various painting rigs.

Today we prime! Plus perhaps a little bit o' airbrushing white!

@MauS: Vassal is, quite simply, an online game table.
Here is a sample table I set up, just to show what it can do.

You build the terrain, then populate it with your models (which you can even save as army "lists" )
Its a bit weird, but when you get the hang of it it becomes quite easy. I definitely recommend just playing with it! It even has digital measuring tools and templates, all of which are actually linked to in game dice rolling. Itll roll to hits and to wounds with a click of a button!

First you download the engine from the link above, then you go HERE and download the module for 6th ed 40k.
I haven't much time for a tutorial (trying to keep the paint bench moving right now) but will definitely write one up soon as I can!

A tournament would actually be kinda fun, come to think of it xD

He didnt drop it- he set it there.... for tactical strategery and stuff

The white bases are my own custom casts, originally destined for my Orks. The ME just went and inherited em!

There are like 2 other variants, but most along the same line.

As to the heads- I like painting them separate, especially on the halved scheme. Just lets me get in to all the little details! Hevent decided if the Devs and sergeants will get different color helms or not... Something to mull over

Post by: Ramos Asura

Absolutely SL- Lots of work yet, but small steps I guess....
The parts list is a bit overwhelming though @_@

A few updates though...

Firstly, I got new primer, though I'm slightly worried about it. Turns out its an enamel primer (Rustoleum clean metal primer) and as such is still just ever so slightly tacky, even with a day of drying :/
There shouldn't be any compatibility problems (coverage was EXCELLENT, by the way compared to my other stuff), and Ive read online that it should be perfectly ok. Im giving it another day or two to cure, as the can says "Dry fully in 48 hours." Hopefully that will put my concerns at ease. my earliest test piece shows that its dry enough to handle and probably will handle paints well, though its just that slight bit of tackiness to it.

Secondly- I got my little bro to help me design a layout for business cards for Rollin' All Ones. I'm liking the design, but we'll really see when they come in in a week or two. I managed to string together a bunch of deals and stuff on Vistaprint, so it wasn't too expensive either. I'll update when they come in, to be sure.

Thirdly- Got work started on the Libby and the Nephilim! The latter is a bit rough in spots, as the gray primer I was using decided to go crazy on me and dry with a really unpleasant texture. I managed to sand down the really bad bitz tho, so hopefully its not too noticeable. Also, the Micron pens are apparently SUPER easy to wreck when lining on the white.... I killed one for sure, and potentially another one. I've 2 more good fresh ones to last me the army- I really dont wanna swing out and buy more!

Im going with an ultra bright blue on the libby's armor- I figure that the white and turquoise would overwhelm a darker blue like I used on WMs libby, so Im giving it a huge boost in brightness. At this stage Id guess its a third to about half way done.
As to the Neph, it's only been sprayed on one side with my "white" aka a very light gray, to be highlighted with pure white later.

Looking like a good start. Keep on it though. We both know your normal pace won't work, and you may have to get everything to a playable point, even if not where you'd like it to be.

I picked up a box of microns on eBay for like $25. Might be worth while.

Rollin' All Ones --- A Midsummers Night's Update (7-30-21) @ 2013/03/16 04:00:08

Post by: Gitsplitta

Man that libby is a choice figure! WM's got the right of it. Make sure you get everything to a basic standard quickly. Details can be added as time allows but the initial painting has got to get done my tournament time.

You can always go back and finish them later. Look at what I did with my rhinos... I painted those 3 years ago and they got a near complete re-vamping and look great! Do a good job on what you do... but don't get caught up in the little details... just keep painting.

Rollin' All Ones --- A Midsummers Night's Update (7-30-21) @ 2013/03/16 17:33:42

Post by: Ramos Asura

I know my normal pace wont work, and I definitely know that I may need to make cuts due to time constraints.... But not if I can help it!

At the very least, I want the Libby and Neph to be to my standard. As centerpieces of the army they are the ones that need the most love. Devs would be next, then basic tac marines are the only models that Im prepared to paint to playability, glue together, then finish later (fortunately thats 90% of my army xD ). Devs just have too many areas to get to that are covered by their guns for me to paint em properly after assembly. Bolter dudes are easy by comparison.

I think im definitely gonna get a box of the Microns later... Theyre nice but wear out too easy!

Ah and the Tacky primer problem seems to be resolving itself- The test piece is now very handleable, with the very slightest tack to it. Honestly if you didnt know any better youd never notice. By tomorrow the large scale airbrushing can be started!

Speaking of airbrushing- The Neph is fully basecoated!

Im not sure whats gonna happen to the wings on the wings... I considered a gold but that might be a bit too jarring.... Any thoughts?

Also, the Libby's blues are finished. Although I may yet go in and hit the highest surfaces with a brighter color...

Aaaaand back to painting.

That much yellow will look bad very 80s. The split color is already bright, a third will detract, not add imo. I think gold, or maybe a more neutral color like grey, would be better. Regardless, you should carry it over to the marines as well.

Oh I definitely hear you on that WM... Id never put yellow on the Neph. Horrifyingly bright O_o

I really like the thought of carrying the color over to the marines... Looking at my Libby so far, Gold wouldn't be too terrible on aquillas.... Maybe it wouldn't be bad on the Neph... I think i may just go with that!

Libby progress: Gold started and washed, then metals blacked out.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Aaaand tonight's progress:

At this point its just minor details on him like the tabard, eyes, and purity seals!
The power weapon actually looks a little better in the pic (strangely enough) Im working on smoothing out the yellow. It went on rather streaky, so needs touching up.

The other power weapons will be similar in color (red-orange to yellow-orange), albeit blended in a more traditional manner- this sword was a weird find, but I like it! Definitely a different design...

Basing for guys that arent on the resin bases will be similar to this one- grey sand and rubble chunks, then a Devlan Mud wash just to give a little warmth to the dead grays. Almost an ash wastes scheme. Then its a ring of Adeptus Battlegrey and its done!

Anyways, Thanks for reading!

Termies came out beautifully, librarian is looking great too, it's a fantastic sculpt but what on earth is that sword from? Will be good to see some split scheme marines, it's something I've not really had to face as it seems only loyalists go for that sort of thing, I imagine it's somewhat awkward keeping straight lines on certain areas of detail.

@Gits: Thanks! and hey from what I saw yours looked real good too! I think this is just a case of color and my camera. Somehow my camera is blurring the blade just so much as to make all the colors look more gradual. In reality its a bit rougher.

@Ignatius: Thank you! The sword is from MaxMini I believe... It came in a big bag that WM gave to me for this project xD The halved scheme is definitely shaping up to be interesting.... Im already seeing that SM chest details tend to get in the way of the split sometimes.

@MT: Thanks- and yup! Definitely going with gold!

Almost done- Just minor stuff now... What color should that bit on his tabard be? Considering red, just to bring a bit more color to the front.... like a dark red.

In other model progress, everything else has gotten sprayed "White" (aka light gray) so its all moving along!

Yeah WM- I have to say it was an incredible score! Now I have a one of a kind libby that looks positively bad ass! More than suitable to stand in as Ezekiel!

And geez Gitz... yer gonna give me a big head
Thanks for all the inspiration and motivation.

OK! So last little update for tonight- Zeke is done, and just waiting on his backpack to be painted up (and varnishing, of course). No pictures, as not much has changed on him. Instead, I bring you images of the Razorback and Nephelim- both of which have gotten their turquoise highlighted via airbrush. Im going to go and bring the edges of the plates out in a final edge highlight, like I did on WMs Razors. I ordered a turret kit from Chapterhouse, so hopefully that'll get here soon!

(cockpit bits are magnetized, not glued, for easy access!)

Now on the Razorback, Im about 50/50 on it... I wanted to do something different on it, so I went with an offset diagonal split, though still with a majority of the colors on their respective sides.
Im not 100% on the look yet, but hopefully that'll change when the white comes to a level closer to the turquoise in terms of shading/highlighting. Thoughts?

While the airbrush was still hot I also sprayed the many left arms that needed basecoating. Damn I love this thing.... Easily has paid for itself a hundred-fold!

Now for a bit of a break, then sleep, then back to painting xD
Thanks for reading!

I don't think I'm digging the rhino to be honest. I think a more traditional middle split would have looked great. and still could have done the alt color doors and whatnot. I also feel like its going to look off from the rest of the army that is split down the middle.

The Neph on the other hand looks great! Makes me excited to see the rest of the army, and hopeful you will continue the army past the 1000 points for Adepticon. Not enough well done split color (or quartered) armies out there.

I'll be the odd man out and say I like the split rhinos. It's a unique way to distinguish the two colors. I think it gets too boring if you split everything down the middle.

I'm with SL on this one... the diagonal split is very cool. Makes the figures much more interesting.

@WM: Yeah I hear ya, and thats one of the reasons I was hesitant to do it. In the Badab War books the Rhino/Razor was painted split in half width-wise, so the doors got split colored too, and that evolved into this idea.... Im really hoping it'll work, and that more paint will change your mind (and mine as well!)

@SL, Gits, & IA: Thanks. It definitely sets it apart from other elements of the army, but Im worried it might be TOO apart... Hopefully the addition of more color will work it out.

@GirrafeX: Yup- The ME symbol will be going on the big blue door.

Today I just jumped straight on the Dev squads, figuring theyd be my first batch. Got the Turquoise first coat on, and waiting for it to dry before a second coat.

Also, I got a package in the mail from Chapterhouse:

In addition to a few shoulderpads, I got this kit for the Razorback- designed to be fully magnetic. Initial thoughts are generally positive, and it looks really easy to put together and detail looks pretty sharp!
Plas/Las turret here I come!

I'm liking the offset split on the rhinos, don't think it'll detract from the overall look of the force.

Might even have been interesting to have different splits to differentiate the squads...back right to front left on one, back left to front right on another...lengthways...crossways... But that's a whole other story...

@MT: AGH MORE VEHICLES!?!? One step at a time, definitely... but I really like that idea. just cant think of more stuff to paint @_@

@YB: Thanks, Im really hoping they'll meet everyone's expectations... Im still too ambivalent about the scheme... Just not convinced how itll look...

AND QUIET WM!!

*ahem*

Anyways.... painting continues. Devs are washed and getting second coat of turquoise as we speak. Also, my objective marker is getting colors. Libby is done and just needs some flat varnish on him before I pop him on the shelf.

In other related news, today my cards came in the mail!

Simple and to the point- They could use a bit of refinement, but that can wait. Im pleased with how they came out. Its no Pete the Squig (as featured on Ifalna's cards) but hopefully the MekaTyrant is at least a little bit memorable.
One of these days i gotta get a website... *puts on To Do list*

Paint away!

So I finished the Librarian!
[url=http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/475755-.html]

I also had an issue with blacklining. I had the realization that the Micron pen would be too thick, and I really didnt like the look of it on the marines. So I dug out a bottle of flat varnish and black ink and whipped up what I think can be a pretty good replacement. Plus its a little faster- all I need to do is clean up the white, then highlight!
This pic hasnt had the white cleaned up yet.

You darn kids and your blood feuds.

So... who was the moron who chose a white army?
Ughhhhh....

Such a pain in the ass.... crazy time consuming- though I kinda committed myself to this method at this point.
I really do need to experiment more to find a better white combo. Ive seen online that washing areas with turquoise gives a nice cool white, one that I kinda like the look of. Though at this point its too late to switch and too late for experimenting any further.
Im stuck with black as the darkest points right now, so that'll be the method for the rest of this list. For stuff after Adepticon.... well, we'll see.

Alright, so final bit of progress here- The Dev sergeant, now with his whites cleaned up. Just needs highlights at this point.

I guess it looks passable... If I had the time, Id redo everything and probably go with the cold gray wash techniques. Though too late now! I can only make forward progress- no going back here!
Like I said, crazy time consuming. I think it took me 30-40 mins to do two of them @__@ The white color just covers so slowly over black spots, especially if I want to make it look seamless.

Aye, thanks guys. Eh... I'm just really am not liking the white... I dunno, I'm just being overly critical of the paint maybe.
Anyways, its gonna get done, one way or another.

@Jehan: I considered that, but couldn't figure out what would look best. Plus Im on a time crunch so I couldn't afford to get too elaborate with him, So I went with the traditional libby scheme.

Well.... it took me all day yesterday and some of this morning, but I finished the white touch ups on every last little devastator bit. So I finally get to switch to a different color!

I also messed with wing ideas on the Neph.
Gold looked absolutely hideous, even when I attempted to knock it down with washes and weathering. So I ended up testing out the far more neutral black and grey, almost a inversion of the DW Neph scheme (white w/ black wings instead of black w/ white wings).

This will naturally get neatened up and brightened on the edges with a brighter gray, but I think this might work. It definitely doesn't stand out as awfully as gold did.

Oh! And some important news! In anticipation of Adepticon and my first sojourn into advertising my commission workshop, I'm running a contest!
I will be giving away a lovingly crafted and painted model to one lucky person on Facebook! Just "Like" Rollin' All Ones on Facebook, and you are automatically entered!
Whats more, If we break 100 likes on Facebook, Im adding another, even bigger prize to the pot!! (so TWO people will be winners!)

Names will be drawn on April 6th, so don't wait- Like today!!
Thanks everyone!!

@Gits: Ahhh!! I GET IT NOW!
You know, I actually considered that. Heavily considered that. Though i think what stopped me is that I wanted some different color to pop out on the vast areas of turquoise and white. I might do that on a second flyer if the opportunity arises. For now the black seems to hold nicely.

@SS & SL: Thanks! I actually think Im gonna go with that idea.... Just need to mask the whole thing again!!! Updates on that tomorrow!
And SL.... no facebook!? how do you live man? xD
*ignores the fact that he checks his own page once in a blue moon*

OK! SO!
Have I ever said how much I love not painting white? Cause I really do.

The Dev squad has all of the metals and black areas blocked out, and parchment/cloth areas on the squads and my objective. I decided to go with something different and actually painting the cloth a darker gray, opposed to my usual khaki color.

The backpacks and MLs also got blacked out areas, and I am currently working on blacking out the Lascannons and PCs. Might have gotten a little further but got sidetracked playing Little Bog Planet with my 3 younger brothers (Was celebrating the freedom from white xD )

The end of these squads is within my grasp!

TO DO LIST:
> Finish blacking out LCs and PCs
> Edge highlight Turquoise and White armor areas
> Finish blacks, gray cloth and Parchment
> Gold, silver, and red.
> Bone bits on servo skulls
> Random little details

Then its off to 15 tac marines whose goal is just to get to the Devs' current state! That way I can glue em and come back to em!

Plane looks cool so far Ramos, but I have to tell you, the best part of this picture, THE DRAPES! Or tablecloth or whatever that is. Hands down one of the best backgrounds I've seen for a model. I may have to look at purchasing one of my own.

I will also have to apologize for not giving you a heads up before. I may not be as skilled in the painting as you but I have a lot of experience with painting white marines. I should have warned you. The old method, such as my avatar picture, has been replaced by other methods of which you have already mentioned. You should have used the other methods. It is however, to late. Push forward and you'll get it done. It will still look awesome! In the grand scheme of things you're almost there!

Oh, and I am with Solar. No facebook. Sorry. My wife wanted me to get it a decade ago and I refused, because that's what husbands do, so I then had to hold to my guns and never get a facebook account. The last thing I want to hear is any sort of, "I told you so" nonsense. If I were on facebook though I would totally like your page, for sure.

You know Ramos... looking at that closely... if you wanted the pattern to jump out more... you might have been better off keeping the wing edges black and lightening up the middle, rather than the other way around. That way you'd have maximum contrast between the wing and the pattern.

@Ice: Yeeeeeah thats the hideous 15 year old (probably older) wallpaper in this room...
It's never been renovated as its the "craft area," so called because when my brothers and I were children (>10 years ago) my mom was big into the artsy stuff and scrapbooking, but it has since been abandoned for close to 6 years. Then it shifted to a storage area in the basement. Seriously noone ever went in it for ages, save to chuck another box of crap in it..... I had to spend about a month hacking out even the slightest area to work in! The giant desk alone took a week and a half to clean off (though im glad I did- its great to spread out projects!)

As to the white.... yeeeeah.... Its still a pain in the ass.....

No worries on no FB. Thats as good a reason as any not to have one! Stick to yer guns!

@uk_crow: Much appreciated! Though Id say Im more foolish than brave- Given that I'd have a month to paint an army, what color scheme did I pick? Not the nice easy red and black that the Exorcists were.... no, I picked the WHITE SPLIT COLORED ONES!!! xD

@Gits: Like THIS:

Taking you guys' suggestions, I went back and masked it off, and Im damn glad I did. I REALLY like how this turned out!
I needed to take a break from the Devastators.... onto the silver metal now and nearly done with it. Then its golds and reds! Guess now that this is done, Im off to do that now!

I think it may be because both the black and the silver are so dull compared to the white and teal, especially on the marines. It is more noticeable on the guns for sure (compare those two pics). I am sure the golds and detail colors will bring it home.

Rollin' All Ones --- A Midsummers Night's Update (7-30-21) @ 2013/03/25 04:41:47

Post by: Ramos Asura

Yeah thats probably it.
I did a test fit on one of the marines, and really the scheme does have a very subdued pallette. White, Black, and Turquoise.
It really needs a tertiary color, one that would stand out.... so I spent most of today on reds.

The lascannon "glow" is something im not totally sold on but the heck with it, its painted. Next time Ill use my airbrush and maybe OSL Lascannons and Plasma cannons..
It does its job though, and breaks up the cold colors (as well as making me feel a little better in regards to progress).
I havent done the PCs at this point, but the glow will be a bit more difficult, I think. The ridges are a lot less pronounced.

I will be going back and doing my quick heat treatment to the LC muzzles, and that'll help lock in the colors and make them seem more complete.

Also for todays progress, I brightened a lot of the metals with Mythril Silver, and Im going to start tomorrow by quickly going through with a fine brush and getting at the more detailed areas of metal. Probably going to do the main armor highlights as well, as I guess Ive avoided them long enough. Then Ill finish highlighting parchment and cloth, and finally add in gold areas like the aquillas!

I actually think these guys are only a day or two from completion!

Thanks guys!
Managed to get the white all finished, and the metals too- All thats left for this squad is final turquoise highlights, a little bit of glow on PCs, then a bunch of quick little details. Then the bases, but thats easy.

No update pics (Nothing noticeable has changed), but I did get a game in with panda.

Overall.... I got crushed xD
Ive never been one to write up combat logs, but here's a stripped down version of the basics...

Setup was Vanguard strike, Mission was The Relic. Zeke got Prescience and Forewarning for his powers.

BEFORE (just after first movement phase):

I got first turn, and put both devastator squads in cover, where they picked on the orks from afar. Tac squad hooked up with zeke and moved in on the relic. The Razor with 5 man squad inside moved towards the relic.
Biggest problem were my dice- WORST ROLLS EVER! I botched a ton of my saves, and lascannons hit only occasionally. In turn 1 of ork shooting, all but one lascannon were killed in the LC/PC squad.

At the end of turn 4 we decided to call it, as I was left with this:

AFTER:

Only guys alive were the orphan Lascannon, and 2MLs and a LC from the other squad.

I did learn quite a bit from the match though... and it was a nice distraction from painting!

And for SL:

TO DO LIST
> Finish Devs (as listed above)
> Finish Neph (mostly highlighting and details)
> Finish Razor (mostly highlighting and details, Turret needs assembled and painted)
> 10-man Tac squad (sprayed base white)
> 5-man Tac squad (sprayed base white)

Anyways, Im nearing completion on the Devastators:

As well as the objective marker:

At this stage I just need to weather and shade the gold, highlight the parchment and turquoise, then give the bases a good dusting of rust powders. Should have finished pics by tomorrow.

I also put in some work on the Razor, and got the white highlighted up. I also built up the turret kit that I ordered from Chapterhouse.

Overall the kit is nice enough. the casts are solid and are relatively easy to clean. Its even easy to install the magnets for the various weapons!
My biggest issue, however, is that the gun mounts dont fit the turret base very well. Unlike GWs kit, this one I had to glue in place as otherwise the connection is far too loose. I could have remedied the build with a piece of 1/8 inch pipe, but unfortunately I think I used it all on one of my terrain builds ><
Ah well, it looks fine as is, I just dont get the coolness factor of pivoting it up and down.

Still quite a bit of work to do, and a week and a half before my self-imposed deadline :/
The adventure continues!

That is a sharp looking turret. Too bad about the fit. I'm really looking forward to seeing these last few things come together.

....

So the Devs are done, save for just the slightest detail.....
NO HEADS!

So there's that. Plus I need to paint up some shoulderpads and two backpacks, but that's easy stuff, comparatively speaking. Likely it will just be taken care of with the next batch of painting, which will be the first chunk of a tactical squad! Other than that these guys are finished! (the servo-skulls have since been painted and the bases will be rusted after clear coating)

I think what I might do is give these guys their own little in-game narrative. After each game, provided there's time and motivation to do so, the big scrolls will be updated to show kill markings from their time in the field

We of the Marines Errant prefer to avoid the COWARDLY sniper fire of our enemies by removing our heads, thus removing our weakest points.

What a minute....

*ahem* ANYWAYS!

Got the Razor highlighted up. It turned out kinda subtle, but at this point I dont think I have the time to redo the edge highlights ><

It works for what I need it to do, and I dont think you'l even mind it once its all finished. The Neph will get a similar highlight, though now I know to mix it a smidge lighter.

And I went and lined up my next step in infantry: The 5-man tac squad. They shouldn't take me anywhere near as long as the Devs did. They're only basic Tac Marines, after all.

Well there's only one rhino at this point... Future ones will definitely have a different split to them. That picture is just the same one at different angles.

Goals for today:
> Prime heads, pads, meltabombs, and turret bitz
> Get aforementioned parts at least partially painted- at least to the split scheme base.
> Razorback metal bits
>Tac Squad turquoise based
> Neph turquoise highlighted
> Neph base primed

Hmph stoopid loyalists! Business cards eh very sharp sir, just to be contrary I'm also not sure about the diagonal split, but it is very well done so I could see it growing on me. Keep looking at loyalist blogs today, making me very tempted to do those minotaurs... especially with those pretty devs. Have to resist seeing as I'm not even progressing with the chaos forces thanks to some rather obsessive gardening.

Thanks Gits. Id probably be in a similar situation, as I really NEED to go, not only for the team, but because I paid for the event dang it! Hopefully, though, Ill be in perfect health, so I can go eat, drink, and be merry.

@Ignatius: Thanks! I'd say go for the Minotaurs- A small contingent of them would give you a nice change of color while painting, as well as filling that burning need for painting some Devastators!
And wait.... Gardening? As in... Outside? In the sun...?

You chaos players are weird.....

Anywho, Im alive, despite Nurgle's best attempts. Still very tired, but at least Im not super nauseous anymore...

I even got a bit of work done today:

Every last little pad, head, arm, and half of the remaining backpacks are up to base colors and shaded with wash.
In theory this wash mix I made should speed up the process of painting white. It behaves way different from Badab, and so far, Im really pleased at the results.

That'll wait tiill tomorow, though.

Not pictured are the 5 tac marines and the Razorback turret+ hatch bit which got up to the same level.

Also, I got the Neph's base ready for priming, adding a few details to it. Its gonna be interesting figuring out how to glue the clear stand on there....

If I get the army finished in time, Ill show ya what the magnets are for!
For now, Im gonna go take some meds and sleep a little.

Is the stem mounted straight on the base? Hard to tell from the angle and goodies on there. Just want to avoid the potential bitching or hits to team score.

Alright- So I'm much better now! Oddly enough I've little appetite, but I can live with that ^^

@Gits: Thanks! Im working as fast as Im able to on the army, though this is certainly the most tedious stretch right here. Should be easier to paint the remaining models now that the little bitz are done.
When is the latest I can ship pics of the army to you? I'd like to have as much finished as possible.

@SL: Mhmmmmm. But just wait till ya see what I use for the markers!

@WM: Thanks dude. And it is more or less straight as is, maybe 10 degrees off from centered. I can get it centered easily.

@proto: Thank you! I hope I can continue to deliver

Ok so the white for this particular part is past its hardest stage, namely covering up the splashes of wash. All thats left is a highlight of both colors and its on to the (thankfully) limited details!

I went and painted every head (maybe one extra), so they'll be over and done with when I do the last tac squad.

From here its highlights and details!

On another note, what is the front-left-most head from? I REALLY like it!

Fortunately its only two days, then I'm back to full tilt painting.

As it is, progress will be slow and sporadic today and tomorrow.

Thanks for tuning in!

Aghhhhhh! Lotsa work and little time to do it in! I really wish I didn't lose almost week to being sick and working, but I guess it couldn't be helped...

At this point, my primary goal is to get the 5 man tac squad, heads, razorback, and Neph fully finished by the end of the week. I also want to get the 10 man tac squad to a playable level in that same timeframe. Perfectly doable, as the projects that need completed are just about done anyways.
Im still gonna be putting a lot of late nights into it. I want to get as far as is physically possible!

(And I didnt make a to-do list, if you'll notice. I'M NOT MAKING THAT MISTAKE AGAIN ><; )

Anyways, I made good progress today (even with going out to lunch and a bit of shopping), and several projects are nearing completion.

The Neph's base is complete, and just needs flat varnish and the stand glued in (no pics, but they're coming soon). The Razor is nearly finished, with just the detail work to go, primarily on the front of the hull and turret gun bitz.

I think the weathering really helps break down the large swathes of teal and white. Honestly I think this guy could be finished by tomorrow (well.... Sunday afternoon).

@Gits, YB, and cormade: Thank you! For a quickie job, Im glad it turned out as well as it did. In the future I'd like to pick out some of the details and grates on the rubble piece, but for now its good for the tournament!

@NF: Much appreciated, man, and don't worry- better late than never ^^ Thanks for the kind words on the ME's - Im glad they're turning out as well as they are. Im still having no end of a rough time with the white! Version 2 will be MUCH easier!

Ok so lotsa airbrush work today- touch-ups on various spots on the Neph, painted the Razor's turret guns, and put the power sword colors on! Have to say I really like the color blend on the blade.

Also, the Razor is just about done, save for a decal or two. Its getting its gloss coat tonight, then decals in the morning.

So I'm definitely crazy... Here's what I was working with during the power outage last night:

Painting by flashlight is really hard on your eyes... Got the metal up to its washed state on all the little bitz and bobs, though.

Fortunately, power is on (came on right after I decided to quit last night, actually xD ) and I'm back to making forward progress.

@Gits, YB, cormade, SS, IPS, DC: Thank you!

@WM: That's about right, and ya there's a tac squad 2. I'm at the cusp of finishing a majority of the marines right now- mostly its a lot of bitz painting. I figure for every update I actually take a picture of, there are another 3 things I don't. I'm actually a fair bit further than it may seem.

The Neph is perfectly playable, and well exceeds the 3 color rule... Thats sort of the reason it hasnt got much work on it recently. After the second tac squad is up to playable colors, then Ill go back and detail it if I have time.
Dev squads will both be finished at about the same time as the small tac squad, as all they need are heads and theyre done.
Finally the larger tac squad needs only to get to where the 5-man squad is at the moment, with major colors blocked out. that shouldnt take more than a few days. I plan to have army shots by Saturday, if not sooner, provided my luck holds out!

Matt.Kingsley wrote:The power saw you rollin' so it started hatin'

Poor guy.... All he did was lose his contact and now you guys are all making fun of him... He's gonna get it from the Chapter Master if he loses it!

Thanks everyone!

@Ignatius: My setup is real simple, though it needs a TON of tweaking to look right, lest you end up with pics like mine today ><
All it is is two sheets of black card stock and a good daylight bulb. Then a wash in Photoshop and it looks all pretty! My white backgrounds are the same way, though less finicky about lighting, it seems. Two pieces of white printer paper.
Weathering on the Razor is just Charadon Granite through my airbrush. Same technique I used on WMs Razors, though with his I used Scorched brown.

Adepticon: One week and counting.

Ok, so! Devastator squads (as well as all the heads and pads Ill need) are complete. I just need to do the bases on the Tac squad and they'll be done as well! (Pics of them tomorrow) Details like squad markings, squigglies, and other details like shoulder pad markings will be done at a later date, as at the moment its all about completion to a playable level.

My camera didnt seem to want to cooperate today, so pics are a bit substandard.... I really gotta get an actual lightbox one of these days!

Close ups of the Missile squad:

And close ups of the LC/PC squad:

Thank you everyone!
You guys really keep me motivated. Ok! Almost done now!
Here's the tac squad and its sergeant:

I am officially on the home stretch!
Final project is the 10 man tac squad. A bonus though is all the heads and arms are done, so its just bodies and backpacks!

Thanks! In truth the sword is super simple, and requires only a rudimentary level of skill with an airbrush.

SL: I actually wrote up a tutorial on the technique I used HERE The only difference is color choices. On the sergeant's blade I used a base of Golden Yellow, then blood red, then a bit of chaos black mixed into the blood red!
Seems like that was more than enough to really make the effect pop!

In progress news: Tac Squad 2 is basecoated and washed!

OK!
So I actually made pretty killer time with these guys, all things considered...

May I present the Marines Errant detachment of the Redeemers of the Maelstrom!

(The Neph makes it really hard to get good army shots!)

I also think Ive banged out the various names for the force:
Marines Errant Army List wrote:
(HQ) Librarian: Chief Epistolary Cyraxes
(HVY) Devastator Squad Primus: Sgt. Argos commanding
(HVY) Devastator Squad Secundus: Sgt. Garu commanding
(TRP) Tactical Squad Primus: Vet. Sgt. Nevra commanding
(TRP) Tactical Squad Secundus: Vet Sgt. Vitellius commanding - Razorback "Shield of Vilamus"
(FA) Nephilim Fighter: "Star of Vengance"

And a close up of the second tactical squad:

All around, especially on the second Tac squad, I have a good deal of details to paint in, however I'm finally at that playable level. I'm going to spend the rest of the time between now and Thursday getting some more details on.

Hard to believe its only been a month since I started this project! I'm really surprised how it all came together, even with losing a week due to illness and work.
An army in 3 weeks.... Not something I'd want to do again xD

And think, for the first time (that I know of) you have a fully coherent, fully painted army!

I'm guessing you are going to need a break from marines for some time, but do you plan on expanding outside of future years list? Might be nice to bring it to a 1500 and 1850 point list, if nothing else.

I'll try to get your list all personalized and printed this week, rather than make you do it Thursday night.

Really nice army Ramos, I agree that in the future would be necessary to bring It at 1500 pt or more, just for the sake of It ( and for your fans )

Hahaha Thank you all for the complements ^^ (God I have fans!? You're gonna give me an even bigger head, SS!)

Its been an experience to say the least... Everything jumping in the way, breaking through "The Wall"... And its not even over yet! I still have a tournament to go to!

Honestly I've not thought much on expanding the force, though the idea is not entirely out of the question. (I think much of the reason for this is the lack of time to think!!) But I think that'd be kinda cool to build the list up. Could be fun to organize a larger Battle of Badab Apocalypse-esque match in the future...

For the moment, I think the primary project is to finish these guys 100%... After that, I think Im going to re-think my white technique. Painting over black wash is rough! Depending on how it turns out, I may even start getting rid of some of these guys, replacing them with the "new" marines colors....

Though all that is way into the future, really... For now its focus on Adepticon!!
After that, who knows what commissions will bring

'Ere we go!

'Ere we go!

'Ere we go!!

Final update here before beginning my journey to Adepticon tomorrow:

Just in case any of you missed this post on Gitsplitta's blog (in which case, SHAME ON YOU GET OVER AND READ HIS BLOG NOW! )

 Gitsplitta wrote:
Just wanted to remind everyone...

On the Friday night of Adepticon at approximately 7 PM (or as soon as we can find a free table in the main hall), the Wardens of the Maelstrom and the Redeemers of the Maelstrom will revive the epic stuggle of the Badab war. 8000 points (or two full Adepticon teams), 4 rebels, 4 loyalists will vie for superiority on a desolate battlefield in that far-flung region of space. The Fire Hawks, Red Scorpions, Marines Errant and their Adeptus Mechanicus allies will try to bring the four rebel chapters... Tiger Claws, Lamenters, Executioners and the Mantis Warriors to heal.

We invite all of you to come join us to witness this historic event, and well as joining us in a mixer of sorts. A chance to meet us, see the armies in person & maybe even run one of these storied chapters whilst it's owner takes a pee break! We'll provide some limited quantity of libation and nosh to get things rolling... but it's probably best if you bring your own lest you be disappointed. We'll start to set up 7ish... but if you want to wait until the battle is rolling to swing by, 8 PM is probably a more reasonable time to join us.

Dakkanoughts on our two teams are...

Myself (Gitsplitta)
Solar_lion
Briancj
whalemusic360
Ramos Asura
Yellowbeard
IceAngel
inmygravenimage's... well... graven image!

I hope you can join us... it's going to be a really good time!

Feel free to cross-post this as you like. This is an open invitation to Dakka and the 40k community at large.

See you there!
Gits

P.S. Leaving Friday morning... until then I'm one majorly stressed puppy.

See you guys at Adepticon!

Aaaaand we're back!

Lost every game, but for the most part my opponents were really cool, especially the last couple of folks I played (one even convinced me to buy a contemptor dread )
Not to mention it was awesome to meet the Wardens. I dont think you could get a better group of guys together! plus, Yellowbeard made BEER!

I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of free stuff in the swag bag at the con:

Next year though, Im definitely going to register early- WMs full swag bag was even more impressive!

And of course, I've got a lovely bunch of Forge World goodies

Stuff perhaps for next year.
Mk3 boarding party, complete with big ol shields.
Mk4 armor kit
Emperor's Children Contemptor Dread
A pair of contemptor dread arms (and an assault cannon is on the way)

The list next year will definitely get an overhaul, maybe with the addition of a trio of Rapiers- those things are wicked at popping vehicles!

A day or two to decompress and recover from the awesome convention, then we'll see what gets painted next!

Oh yeah! and dont forget to check out the Wardens' recap page HERE

So, After my latest streak of painting, I was wanting a break. I really didn't feel like painting what I had here, and Adepticon still burned brightly in my mind. Going to the con sparked a multitude of ideas in me, and got my mind racing towards the future. It inspired me to take the first step into a project I've been considering for a long time-

A Space Marine...

Oh yeah baby

As it stands now, this is at a VERY rough prototype stage. The joins are rough and primarily this is to give me an idea of what the process would entail. This is about 6-8 hours of work on and off, primarily with me being distracted by youtube or forum posts. Its a quick version, cobbled together from cheap printer paper. Plans are to fiberglass the surface giving a durable and smooth finish.
If I do continue this project, it will probably drift into its own thread.... For now though, I'll just leave it here.

This could prove to be a very interesting project indeed

Alrighty! So I finally got a little painting done.
I wanted to do something different, as for the past month I'd seen nothing but blue and white power armor, so I started on an old Space Wolf model I picked up at Adepticon:

And a few Zombies that were sitting around my desk:

I decided to try out a new skin tone on the zombies. That'll probably show up best when I get more colors on them and get close up shots of the models. Its actually kind of refreshing to get back into it... After these guys get finished, Im going to whip up a few of my turtle marines!

I've also made progress on the Armor Project:

I decided that I want to go with a Mk4 helmet for the simple reason that I've never seen it done before. Not to mention it looks nice
At this stage the helm is mostly done, and just needs the boxy cheek areas assembled. Pipes will be some kind of automotive hose.

Yeah, post-Adepticon is a great time to try odd little projects. I'm working on my Armorcast pipelines and refinery pieces. Wonderful terrain bits and things I've had around forever. Every time I look at them I see more that needs to be done.

I think that is a good way to do the zombies. The total number of them will be so high, that batches will just blend into a single whole.

Wow.... so that break was a bit longer than planned...

So in addition to painting up the two models for my facebook/tumblr giveaway, Ive been working on preparing the Brushfire minis for the next commission.

Thoughts so far on the models:
Though not my particular flavor of wargame (Im more of a fantasy/sci-fi guy, rather than historical-inspired), The minis are rather nice and have a decent amount of details on them. Where they lose points in my book is in assembly. The heads go on easy enough, but even for metal models they end up with a lot of gaps in the arms. This is especially true on the Bull Mastiffs (the taller dogs), which seem to have a casting defect on their left side. It renders the arms nearly impossible to position, as the socket is completely missing. Hopefully quality of assembly will improve with the models' conversion to resin. On the bright side, On The Lamb's customer service is impeccable. I shot them an email explaining my issue, and they threw replacement models in the mail right away, no questions asked.

As it stands now, the unit has its reds and blues based and washed, and Im currently cleaning up the base colors before highlight.

Oh well pip pip how very British that scheme is, and a bulldog to top it off. I do rather like the look of the insect faction they have planned, but I'm not really a fan of this anthropomorphic stuff usually, especially not combined with historicals, though but I'm sure you'll make it look good. The marines errant came out beautifully, makes me wish I had a bit more spare hobby money! Seems I keep missing this thread getting bumped so I went and searched it out

Thanks IG! I appreciate the vote of confidence!

One of these days Ill get back to the Marines Errant- Still have a ton of detailing to do on them- but at the moment Im still in post Adepticon shock xD I might be ruined for White/Turquoise for a while... haha

Work continues on the Bulldogs, with fur getting painted:

And a close up of one of the Mastiffs:

Theres still some work to go on em, but theyre nearing completion. The only parts that arent base coated yet are the backpacks. Everything else is in various stages of washes and highlights.

Got a huge box from WM yesterday, too... Several very very cool upcoming projects.
I'll be updating later tonight on the full list..... Stay tuned!!

Variety is something I really wanted to emphasize on these. Fur patterns seem to be far easier to make different than faces on, say, guardsmen.
My goal is that every unit will be unique in its own way.

And WM- Its a cactus!

These guys should be done tomorrow, hopefully the weather cooperates with the varnish!

Going through the big box of WMs stuff, There are a number of different projects I could start next. I want the community to chime in and lemme know what they want to see!
So let me know by voting in the poll above, or if you really want something specific, shout it out below!

First off, the INSANELY SHARP Exalted Seeker Chariot of Slaanesh!

A small IG vehicle in need of a tune up (A Tauros, I think it was called?)

An Eldar-themed Aegis Defense line by Garage Models

And of course, Zombicide Survivors and the new Zombivors!

Other stuff includes:
> Eldar Guardians (I think)
> Eldar Wraithlord
> Another squad of Brushfire Bulldogs
> Eldar Farseer
> Imperial Enforcer (even comes with a Mastiff!)
> DKoK Quartermaster
> Screamers of Tzeentch
> Two DE Clawed Fiends

And I dont know about this one- Probably gonna have to call customer support on this one. It has severe casting issues around the chest. There are two random bits on there!

Wait.... Its supposed to be like that!? A girl in my grimdark future!?
IMPOSSIBLE!!!

To be fair, the cactus was white...

Do note, the survivor and zombivor below him are not the same dude. Bottom dude is El Cholo, painted earlier.

Try calling in that model. I dare you. Record the confusion for the rest of us.

Awesome!! Thanks to everyone who voted!

So it looks like the people want some Guard models.... WELL LETS GIVE 'EM SOME!

As to the Cultists who demanded I pay homage to their dark gods, dont worry- Some of them are next up for sure! Now stop trying to turn me into a spawn!

On the bench will be the two FW show only models, the Tauros, and that weird metal model you all seem to enjoy

But first, the Bull Regulars are complete, and ready to serve Axony!

( those cacti really DO look like watermelons.... Shut up WM...)

And finally, a particular Bull that I grew to really like. Something about how the tongue and coloration turned out:

Alright! Sorry about the break in communication- Things have been busy around here lately.
In addition to the normal family obligations around the holiday, I've renewed my post-college job search, driven by the need to escape my family's home. Nice to visit, but its becoming a pain to live in! Not to mention this city is far too small for me, an I am dying of boredom!
Slowly but surely resumes and applications are heading out, and I'm hopefully learning how to write halfway-decent cover letters. I've my fingers crossed on a couple of them... dont want to jinx em just yet by mentioning what they are... *is getting a bit superstitious about job hunting*

If anyone happens to know of anything else, particularly in a bigger city, definitely gimmie a shout.

As far as painting and modeling goes, I've been working on the handful of guard models in my possession.

Most of my time has been spent cleaning the Tauros and preparing it for painting.
It's sure seen a bit of action, as a couple of pieces were busted or missing on it. Of particular note was the rear bumper, the front bumper struts, and one of the rear suspension arms.

They still need a bit more shaping, particularly the suspension piece, but I am pleased with progress thus far. then its a bit more liquid green stuff and they'll be off to primer!

For the Tauros, as well as any other Elysians that might come in later waves, I am thinking of a tiger stripe camo- similar to the one on Forge World. However, as WM would like them in urban camo schemes, I did a quick google search and found something I think I like as far as color palette goes:

Thanks guys! It looks much better now that the edges are smoothed out and the small gaps where it connects to the central shaft are filled now.

The Tauros is now ready for priming, as are the other four models in this group.

Also, Ive started work on a bit of an update for a past project.
You might remember Jaska, my Marine Chrysemys who was transferred to the Ice Angels about 2 (almost 3!!) years ago.

(Oh god that paintjob...... *shudders* )

He continues to fight the good fight and is one of the few survivors of the campaign (much to my surprise and elation )
However, I cant help but feel he is woefully under-equipped, what with that tiny plasma pistol and chainsword. This, along with a bit of hinting from Ice during Adepticon, has given me the push forward with "Jaska II: We Got Bigger Guns"!

Bear with me, as this mock-up is rough and just bluetac'd together.

I wanted to do something a bit over the top (invoking the rule of cool), giving him an upgrade while still maintaining the "feel" of his character.
As such, his armor has been upgraded to Mk8 with a slightly modified helmet. The plasma pistol is now a Cannon, and his ccw has been upgraded to power fist.
I had originally thought to do twin assault cannons (going ALL the way over the top and back again), but changed my mind considering how Ice portrays him. Twin assault cannons would have been too brash and aggressive, opposed to Jaska's more tactical and defensive characterization.

On the other hand, I figured out how to put an AC on a tac marine!

Needs a smidge of touch up, particularly the bottom brace for the AC barrels, but I think I will use something very similar to this if I decide to run an Adepticon list that I was talking to WM about. Running Marines Errant as Codex: CSM- Xenotech weapons all over, and these could count as reaper autocannons in Dev squads!

Why not just mount the dual assault cannons on his backpack?

Daemons took the lead in the poll, in a shocking turn of events! I'd still move forward with the IG, but I guess we know whats next!

At least I've got a bit of a gap to get more of my daemons done before you start churning work out then! At least I'm not the only one who likes the slaanesh chariot , always good to see a slightly beaten up model being revived with the tauros I'm sure you'll do it justice.

The assault cannon looks beastly, love a little bit of over the top with the big guns, and if ever there was a setting for it 40k would be that universe. Plus running them as autocannons is doubly good, they really do tear things up for budget points

Post by: Ramos Asura

@Gits: You most certainly will see a number of these if I run Chaos next Adepticon. Though I think Im gonna go ahead and just build him up as a Marine Errant anyways... For the coolness of the model if nothing else.

@IG: Thanks! And hey, don't feel pressured or anything! You do kick ass work on your daemons! Plus, I think Ill be using your technique for painting Screamers as inspiration on the 6 I have here. With any luck i can have em turn out as good as yours!

Everybody got primed today, and just in time too- Not 15 minutes after I wrapped up we got hit by a pretty good storm.

I'm still deciding on color choices, but should have something started by tomorrow. In the meantime I've been experimenting with how I'm going to tackle the tigerstripe camo on the Tauros. The driver and gunner will be easier brushwork, but on the big vehicle I want something quicker and more consistent over larger areas. Liquid mask was the first thing to pop to mind, but I dont have any, nor am I patient enough to wait for an online order! And so, necessity being the mother of invention, I'm trying out PVA glue. In theory it will peel off perfectly fine, as I managed to pull some off my paint pallette with little trouble. My larger scale test was to put tiger stripes on a Deffkopta I had sitting on my shelf. Half painted, it should be perfect for what I need to test out! Here's fingers crossed!

EDIT:
Results are in!

Definitely like the effect!

AGH! The results keep changing!
Hahaha thats so weird how it keeps shifting. I must have messed something up, as it shoulda closed a few days ago xD

Well it looks like its gonna be these IG, then Daemons, then some Eldar. (Now to figure out how to stop the polls.... not that its all that big of a deal, i suppose haha )

@Ice: Thanks! Glad he meets your approval. Hopefully he has a good bit of fight left in him with the Ice Angels!

@WM: Sure dude. I'm always up for hearing new techniques.

Final bit of progress for tonight- Tauros is airbrushed and ready for frisket. I found a nice light shadow grey color that I think will work well for urban camo.

Well, if you are going two colors (might be hard to do three, at this scale) use some small painters tape, with roughy torn edges. If you wanted the three color effect, you may be able to do it with the glue like you did, or use some of the rubber stuff nerdfest has used for his weathering.

Dude thats AWESOME!
Really wish it woulda been finished though! (I forgot the damn missiles at home during the con

Still though.... on BOLS

Definitely takes the sting out of what Ive been doing today...

This, people, is what happens when the Elmer's frisket fails.... and hard...
After spending the better part of a day carefully putting on the stripes, then spraying the colors.... The glue successfully up the model.
It stuck too well in places, and pulled up everything down to the original paintjob's white primer.... I really thought I had gotten all the loose areas of paint, but I guess not....

Damn it...

I did try masking tape, WM, but it wasnt sharp enough of an edge. ended up looking a bit soft around where the colors met. Not really what I wanted... Had the glue pulled off cleanly as it did in the test, Id be sitting pretty. Unfortunately now I have to paint the whole damn thing over again AFTER pulling off all the little chunks of glue and cleaning it AGAIN.

I think Im done with this thing for a little bit...... ARGH!!!

Bummer, was hoping that would work. Maybe varnishing before the glue? Or maybe check with Damo, find that latex crap he uses.

Lo. Been lurking for a while here. Like your painting. I really liked the white/blue scheme and the diagonal split on the razorbacks.

For an alternate masking material that you may have laying about, have you tried Blu-tac (or an equivalent non-blue variety)?
It may be tricky to get sharp pointy shapes but shouldn't be impossible and would be reusable (possibly). Definitely wouldn't take off the lower layers of paint.

Yeah that liquid crap I use is the bomb! Humbrol liquid mask it's purple and smells like Nurgles anus but it works and well worth the wait in my books dude!

Yeah, I really should get some proper liquid mask. One of these days Ill order some, especially if there are more vehicles in need of camo. I was trying to use things that I had around the house so I could move along on the project and avoid ordering a new item just for the occasion.

It backfired, but maybe it just needs more experimentation. Maybe a layer of varnish would protect the bottom layer. Again, this is one of those things I have to play around with in the future. Definitely putting some liquid mask on order though.

@GiraffeX: I dont think the material underneath it mattered too much. The paint was loose in places on the Tauros, plus the tauros had more surface greeblies than the flat panels of the deffkopta, giving the glue more surface to grab on to.

So i took Dr H's idea under consideration, and I think i found a winner! (Thanks dude!!)

As added insurance I put a layer of varnish on it after the initial medium gray layer. Seemed to have really helped, as the sticky tac pulled right up without incident!

Next Im going to bring in highlights to the base colors as well as add streaks of a lighter gray along the tiger stripes. I might throw in a bit of black or dark gray too, while Im at it.

Alright! So its been busy around here lately. I have been working with my dad a lot recently, leaving me exhausted when I get home (thus no painting). Also, the job search continues. Haven't heard anything from any of the applications except for two rejection letters (which I still count as forward progress. Id rather hear "no" than nothing at all!)

I did get in some more work on the Tauros, though. Its handy for breaks between writing cover letters.

From the previous stage, the whole thing got a black wash, then a light edge highlight and clean up of the medium gray stripes.

Then, using a light gray, I brought up the edges of the stripes. I alternated between the front-most edge of the stripes and the trailing edge, as in theory I think it helps the camo to break up the lines of the vehicle.

Overall, it's turning out vastly different than what I had planned, much in part due to the glue fiasco. Bit of a learning curve, but I know how to better tackle the next camo model.

From here, I'm going to pick out pieces in color, like the missiles and lenses. You can already sort of see the mechanical bits on the top picked out in a brassy gold color.

Thanks all.

Yeah the camo really makes progress seem slow, though fortunately Im used to it seeing as my Marines Errant did the same thing.

Slowly its all coming together. Today I put the start of mud on the tires. I didn't want to just use straight gray, as that would have become lost in the camo. My first thought was brown, like the Razorbacks I've done, but that would have stood out too much.
I think I've hit it right on with this light brownish gray. Just enough color, but it wont look out of place on an urban board, especially after I hit it with some gray and black weather powders.

A head-long view, showing more of the detail coloration:

And the turret:

So job search continues, and my need to escape this house grows more dire.

I decided to paint some bright colors, seeing as most of the recent stuff has been focused on relatively neutral and duller tones.

So I mostly painted red tonight, starting with the DKoK Quartermaster:

And Ms. Commissar

And then some turquoise and white on a random old Harlequin just because.

Tauros is looking good, never been sure on elysian helmets, I blame the internet every time I see them all I can think of is 'deal with it'. I'm happy I've been able to avoid camo up until now, it definitely does sink some time but it's worth it.

The reds on the Krieger are already looking spot on, they look too good to be loyalists! Looking forward to the harly being finished, really want to get a squad just to get some freehand practice.

Thanks guys! Red is one of my favorite colors to paint, and it blends so damn nicely!

Krieger got the start of his primary color (another gray )

Im aiming to get the uniform color to a shade similar to German Field Gray, which I've read is a sort of slightly green/brown gray. Fitting as these guys are VERY German influenced.
Plus it should fit nicely on an Urban themed board.

And I put some decoration on the white areas of the Harlequin...

Obliterated the shading on the white, but as a practice bit, I guess not terrible.... :/ Don't know where to go with it at this point, especially the coat. Absolutely no clue what color to go with. Gonna paint the girdle and mask a weathered gold, probably. Gems probably red?

Aw geez you guys.... Thanks ^ ^

I think its kinda rough, especially compared to some of the stuff Ive seen around here... It is nice to have it so well received, though... So thank you

I really like the concept of Kimono-themed Eldar.... If ever I happen to acquire a few warlocks and farseer I think Ill make a themed seer council or something. Could be really cool!

I do agree with ya WM that theyre uniquely fitting for it. No other army has the feel for it... it just seems like the Eldar have that touch of elegance that really lends itself to the theme.

Bit of a supply drop today: All paints for WMs upcoming Mymaera Eldar. The scheme is really unique, and I think I've found the perfect colors for the job! I also got another pot of Vallejo Liquid Gold, as mine has kinda dried out. Now that I know how to use it, this will be less of a problem. They were out of Old Gold, so I got "Rich Gold", which is a little less orange.

Progress continues on the Krieger:

And the harlequin got some Liquid Gold.

Thanks!!

@nerd: Yeah I love the finish these paints give. I do prefer the color "Old Gold" opposed to this one (Rich Gold), as its much warmer. Though Rich Gold is still a lovely color, and all it takes is a good bit of washing to get it to look proper!

Ok, so the Harlequin and Commissar are complete, and only need to be varnished (hopefully the weather will cooperate. Its apparently monsoon season here!) The Krieger needs only a couple details more and he'll be done too.

With nothing but drying time on my hands, I whipped up a test for WMs upcoming Eldar scheme: The Craftworld Mymaera.

Overall, Im pleased. The Jade Green areas are actually a bit more Green than the pictures indicate, but I think it makes for a particularly striking scheme. We will be going with red gems and white weapons on these guys.
