Maybe you could use the Soulgrinder armors plates?
33159
Post by: tipios
@Slayer le boucher - The plates are a little bit to big, even if a cut down.
Just quickly tried Ven dread front plates as shin pads. I like the shape of them, then the pointy upside down plate fits in.

That looks good! I like the way the plates line up! Sure, it's not scratch made, but it will work...

The plates fit great, the icon's on it... not so much, are you going to scratch build plates to match or fill/file off the imperial stuff from them?

Post by: tipios
Sorry guys, my last posts where a bit rubbish, I was talking to wife while posting. So let me just recap.
@RSjake - Thanks. Graven had the idea for the squarer plates, but while looking at them I noticed these ones and just like the shape. So graven should have some credit for that I really want to try what you suggested, and will try and scratch build them like that on the slannesh or even khorne
@1-i - Glad you like it, the plate shape is perfect, just the eagle is in the way but we have the tools to destroy it!
@knightley - I could try to GS the upper bit to follow the shape all the way up, or I could go made and file it of and put a nice skull there
I feel better now I've replied to every one with a bit more effort. Thanks everyone for c@c and suggestions, I appreciated it a lot!!

Holy sh !
You've done so much work since I last checked your blog, it wiould be hard to comment on all the great stuff I've seen on the last pages!
The GS cables are great, the IW dread legs are on a really good way, and the dreadlord is screaming " steal me!" (but I'll be strong )
Really nice work Tipios
33159
Post by: tipios
Thanks Joe!!! Hope you had a good holiday!
Yeah I really got on with the dreadlord and Iw dread, but bitz orders have slowed it down a bit now. Also trying to paint my pimped wizard, but not getting far with it;(

@graven - It's much appreciated though, because I was at one of those "sitting just looking at it and going nowhere" situations.
Well hopefully the sentinel bitz that were missing from my order last week will come today or tomorrow, then I can get this Iw done, and concentrate on the dreadlord

@Pluxtheduck - the arms look like this so far!
Ok everyone, blame Edios for the lack of progress today. I have been stuck playing deus ex all day
but have managed to pin the legs,
and one eagle has been filed
I tried to get another dreadknight on ebay today, but mega failed the bidding process, I was a cheap because it look like someone had faild on the paint job. I have an idea for a Khorne Dreadlord taker of skulls type thing but that will have to wait:(
Thanks for looking.

Don't know what rules anyone building one of these would plan on using as I don't know what the dreadknight rules are like, but if they suck, you could use the rules for the new Contemptor Dread recently released by FW, rules are currently 'experimental' so you can download them for free from the FW website.

I had a thought today for you. With all these bits that you must have stacking up after the Chaos dreads it would be interesting to see what Ork dreads you could come up with using all the left over parts.
33159
Post by: tipios
@Saintspirit - I'm lucky that I'm not making an army, so I got time to do these.
@Giraffex - Another challenge a looted dread!!! yes, after I finish these dreads, although now you gave me the idea, I'm bound to start it before I finish anything else!!!

Just trying some different armour and leg stuff on the Dreadlord.
Feet look too big, so need to change them, but I want claws that look like that.
Any thoughts?
36667
Post by: Markillius08
Truthfully, I don't like the reverse joint look.
It just doesn't seem to go with the rest of the model. It's an interesting idea, but the rest of the body just doesn't lend itself to complimenting the legs.
It looks too front heavy to me as well. My suggestion would be to try something different. Just my thoughts.
39666
Post by: GiraffeX
Not sure tipios but don't Ork Deff Dreads have clawed feet?
33159
Post by: tipios
Thanks Mark, I want to do a khorn dreadlord, but using defiler parts. Would the legs go with that?
36667
Post by: Markillius08
I think that would work for the Khorn one, but If I might make a suggestion, make it like a dogs hind leg with the double joints.
Would make it look like it has more powerful legs, let it stand higher by default, and also just look like an OP BA. (overpowered BAD@$$ for the lei man).
Truly like the idea and the direction of the lord overall btw.

hehe here's something for you to think about. An upright defiler doesn't have to have only two legs look at the tyranid models, you could have multiple legs but have the model standing up on its back legs.

A less overhead picture would be nice to get a overall good view of the model.
I like the idea, alot as it looks right now I would think that the birdclaw feet are a little oversived/out of place for the rest of the model.

What if you elongate the "toes" from the original dreadnought foot? Am I making sense??
33159

@mikZor - Thanks, I also likr the idea of the reverse knees. It does look more sinsiter
@graven - I always liked ED209, they should have done a film of just him killing everything
@FantasyBob - don't worry he will still look like the old model, this is just a test I'm doing because I had these legs spare, and want to use them to make a Dreadlord without using the dreadknight kit.
@kepora - is chicken not digitigrade
@rogue wolves - all these new words I'm learning today yes I believe I will be going down that route when I get to it.
@nerdfest - Thanks alot mate
@1-i - Thanks, yeah the feet are way too big!!
@dakka_dok - I think the dreadnought feet are too small, but I will have a look, thanks for the idea
Thanks for the response everyone

Sorry Tipios, I'm not digging the Bird Legs for the Dread Lord. I argee with others, they need to be bulkier. I don't have alternate ideas, I just don't know what would look good on that besides what it came with...unless maybe if you put 2 sets of the defiler legs together and straightend them out a bit so they don't look so chicken-leggy? It's a bit more work to hack them up and repossition them, but when have we converters ever done the "easy" thing?

I do agree, the legs need to be beefier!

@RSjake - I'm saving up to get a defiler, so I will have more bits to play with early days yet, may be the montrous claw bits would look better as they are much bulkier.

@zeke169 - Colven feet sounds good, much more chaosy

All looking incredibly awesome. May I suggest you do a Word Bearers Dreadnought next/ I love Word Bearers.
By the way, I notice some parts on your models in the WIP pics are painted (such as the Khorne Dread's skull plate thing, the Iron Warrior Dread's entire upper body) whilst the rest are not. Why is this?
33159
Post by: tipios
@graven - Thanks, It does change the feel of them nicely.
@Squigsquasher - The khorne head was painted first, because I thought it would be difficult to paint after I glued it to the dread, and the IW was started because I was waiting for parts for the arms, and really wanted to try some colours out.
World Bearers has been suggested alot, so I would think he will be next any ideas of what he might look like?

Post by: Squigsquasher
I was thinking for the Word Bearers arm you could give him a big skeletal claw, a bit like the thing on the metal Chaos Dreadnought, but a bit better. Braziers from the Screaming Bell kit would be cool, as would lots of seals and scrolls. Perhaps he could have 2 close combat weapons, 1 a skeletal claw as mentioned earlier, and the other, perhaps a whirling flail thing, like on a minesweeper? Or a big firey wrecking ball.
I LOVE big firey wrecking balls. Even more so when they have spikes.

@monkeyh - I have got lucky with the workstation, once I sort through everything, it will make building stuff much easier!
@limbo - Will have to see how I will make a Crozius

Things done this morning, apart from sorting out workstation.
Green stuffed gaps in khorne dread arms, and final touches to IW left arm. Iw just need legs and left arm primed, then paint. Khorne, nearly ready for prime, but have forgot about his legs, I need to sort out leg plates.

Off the top of my head, flatten down the blade edges and add strips of spikes, either home made, salvaged from chaos/de, or cut from big choppas. Oh, and desecrate the =][= hole.

Hmm. This is an odd idea, but bear with me. You could use the NDK foot and not glue; instead, splay it open at the front, attach the outer toes to either side flush, and then gs over to provide a smooth cleft hoof.
Mebbe.

When I first saw the legs, I thought hooves would be the way, but now that I see this little bugger with his head on, it screams "sharp mechanical talons" to me.
May I ask what you have in your tiny mind for the arms ?
33159

Thanks alot joe!!
"Sharp mechanical talons" sounds good to me
For the arms, I'm gona try and make a hell blade, and I need to fit the cannon on some where. I'm not sure on the main part of the arms yet, whether I use the defiler legs, or get more monstrous arms.
20018
Post by: Hyenajoe
I'm glad you like the idea
tipios wrote: I need to fit the cannon on some where.
The cannon is a real problem on most of these defilers. Some are making an arm of it, others make a shoulder weapon... I didn't know what to do myself (I was going for a 4 ccw defiler), so finally I gave up on this point. I'd be interested to see how you'll deal with this.
tipios wrote:I'm not sure on the main part of the arms yet, whether I use the defiler legs, or get more monstrous arms.
I've tried the defiler leg as an arm for mine, but I felt the proportions were not right with such a bulky torso. I think if you want to go this way, you'll have to work on some extra plasticard armor plates. The monstrous arm is a classic, no risk here.
Great Rust effect BTW!
Cheers!

You could try adding a turret above its head with the battle cannon inside or turn it into an arm weapon.
If you go for the second option I'm going to suggest something I have my eye on for a Khorne vindicator that you can pick up on ebay, search for Ironblaster cannon on worldwide as they are in the States.
Just don't bid on the same one as me lol

Arm-mount the cannon-try using a Vanquisher cannon and spike it up. Make it look big and bulky, a bit like the Ork Mega Dread cannon arm you can get form Forge World.
Also, whilst the Hellblade is a good idea, how about a giant Chainaxe?

THAT HEAD LOOKS AWSOME
21162
Post by: 1-i
If this was a small dread or deamon price concept then I would jump all over the hand with head, but as a defiler I think the hand is out of place.
The entire concept is the kind of thing that my nightmares are subconciously intervined with, yes as my dreams get nasty I have something like this jump in and make all the bad stuff go away or at least seem less bad.
I almost feel like I should just convert all my marines to chaos so I can have this much fun with some concept builds, but I wont.
Giant ChainAxe sounds like a wonderfully twisted and fitting weapon for this guy.
47296
Post by: Biohazard
I like the hand. It needs some work but I can really see this working. Will you be adding cables and things like that to show that the daemon is hardwired to the defiler?
33159
Post by: tipios
@gits - Thats a good point, looking at it this morning it is taking away from the awesome head! and also I've got to get a load of chains on him some how, and the hand may get in the way:(
@matt - It's an idea I've had for ages, I want to do it on a dread, maybe a Word Bearer.
@1-i - You gona have to just start a chaos army as well Then you can bring your nightmares to life!! if there that scary your conversions would look awesome
This head has had a real impact, so I don't want to take anything away from it. Hand will not stay!! it will be back though, on another project Automatically Appended Next Post: @biohazard - he will be chained in and I'll add pipes also.

Not overly keen on the hand but i'm sure you'll make it work.
Coming back to the cannon, have you thought of Armorcast? They have quite a few large cannon/turret things on their website and not bad prices either. I looked at getting one for my Titan but decided they were too small but might work for a defiler.

Haha. Just caught up again with this most awesome Blog. I'm glad that you have a nice work desk now My Wife would let me use the dining room table but i had to put everything away each night *sigh*. But then for christmas she got me a artists / tackle box, to put my paint and tools in, and the GW Workstation lap tray. So i used to paint sat in the lounge infront of the TV. But now My son is 1 years old and all inquisitive, its all moved upstairs. But i have a lovely big desk i got for free from work as they were chucking it out. So now i get to paint infront of my PC, once everyone else is in bed.
The defiler legs looke awesome, having him up on 2 feet looks incredibly imposing. I agree that the hand detracts from the head, but cables / wires behind it, will fill the gap and add to it. :thumbs up: :thumbs up:
It must be hard to clear up all that awesome sauce every night, it just gets every where

@RSjake - you could just sculpt a head, and make up a robot body! or even a flying grot, I havn't seen one yet
@graven - thanks mate oh and the right arm goes out to you, as I was stuck when making the big shooter. To keep it in with the GK looted body, I konverted a GK psycannon into the shooter, which you sent me
@More Dakka - thanks!!
@GiraaX- Yeah I've really enjoyed doing this conversion, so on a bigger scale I think I could go made. Thanks, I was going to have the upper part of the body hanging out the top of the termi torso, but after I chopped the legs of it just made sense having them hanging down, and just have the head on top I might go out and get a set of grots, and make a squad of mini deff dreads
After HF Izanagi told me how he did his rivets. (just roll out GS thin then slice up) it's so easy, I'm putting them every where
I failed at making a scratch build mini big shooter, but I'm happy with the GK themed looted parts.

I really like the "claw" idea on the Defiler, a bound Daemon that may not be as "bound" as previously thought looking to escape and wreak havoc the old-fashioned way. Another absolutely brilliant concept from one of the Dakka Masters of Conversion.
The Mega-Grot is hilarious! It totally deserves a stat line. Great paint job, too.

That is one awesome Grot. I'd love to see more photos taken in more ideal light; there's a lot of detail being obscured by heavy shadow. (I recommend shooting outside on grey overcast day - you get soft white light that way.)
I took the liberty of saving your photos and simulating higher lens exposure in Preview:

Looks like a fun project and you are doing a great job. A suggestion for the top mounted speakers: you could use multiple speakers on each side, in multiple sizes, so that it looks a little like a pipe organ. Then you could find some heavy pipe organ music for to use for background music during your battles.

Looking great, as usual Come to think of it, the new grot looks a lot like a swim coach of mine. The more I look at it the uncannier it gets.....

Doomgrot 2 is looking good. Have you thought of turning the termie legs to stilts? Like by having the tip of the grot's feet appearing just above the knee junction?
33159
Post by: tipios
@Rogue Wolves - thanks, that is my fav grot head
@GiraffeX - thanks mate, I can't believe i stopped for so long.
@prime - thanks does your swim coach flame you up, if you don't train hard enough?
@joe - The termie legs are temporary. I was gona do the legs like my last one, but I like your idea and I will do it woooo yeah, really getting back into it!!!!

@Rogue Wolves - LOL
Trying to get a feel of what I want the defiler cannon to look like.
Also looking for legs for Doom grot!! As Joe suggested, his little grot legs will be attached like stilts. Gona cut them in half and give them knees too.
