Hi everyone,
We are a small start-up company trying to get into the wargaming terrain market.
These are our first steps but we already have some buildings to show and really big plans for the future, depending of course on the levels of interest from the community.
We are starting with SCI-FI terrains for 28mm scale - mainly because Infinity is becoming more popular within our gaming group - but the bigger picture will accomodate any scale and any period. Flames of War, Malifaux, Kensei, WH40K and even boardgames like Sergeants or Samurai Battles you name it. We want to be there to provide more spark for your favorite hobby.
One of our main goals is to keep all these nice buildings and terrain pieces at reasonable prices that's why at the beginning we are going to produce stuff from 3mm HDF and also stiff cardboard with different thicknesses, all of which will be laser-cut.
Our main page is still under construction but if you want to express your interest, comment or just to have a look what we're up to please follow us on our facebook page https://www.facebook.com/zenterrain
Hope to see you soon in our e-store.

These are very nice, but at the same time it's just more mdf/hdf terrain. You need to get something different out there other then said material. I want some sci-fi terrain with curves andd round edges on it instead of blocky terrain. Very nice looking though and you will need a low competitive price for these.

Thanks for the comment overtyrant.
Although HDF could be quite limiting in it's use it is also very cheap and durable, we are planning more complex buildings with curvature / chamfers in the future.
We want to stretch this material to it's limits to keep the prices competitive.
Please watch this space for future releases.

As time goes by lots of new small companies show up, that's very good!
Good luck and I'll agree with overtyrant, you'll need to do something very competitive price-wise.

Thanks for the comment insaniak - I hope you would be happy to know that the available models are in the process of painting by our talented buddy painter, so please watch this space...
As for the engraved lines - those aren't really engraved they are quite deep cuts which speeds up the process of getting the parts out of HDF, and I'm sure they will be clearly visible after painting over.
We have also realised that not all of you might want to visit the facebook page so I will post some more images of our products to get some more feedback from you.

Thank you guys for your comments - always gives a boost too work some more.
We aim to have our store at http://www.zenterrain.com up and running at the end of this month.
We are also hard at work to have as much stuff for you to pick from as humanely (dwarfly, orcly and elfishly) possible at the store opening.
So without further ado another update from our designers desk....
Military barrack / hi-tech tent
Also tonight (GMT time of course) we will probably have one of the buildings painted up so there will be another update today or tomorrow.
Cheers guys.

I hope you like it then...it was the first building we designed.
Awesome stuff. I´d like the windows of the chapel in acrylics, please! :-)
We plan to make upgrade kits for some of the buildings to replace details with acrylics - but this material ain't cheap - we're searching for supplier that can serve us small amounts of it (for starters).
Cheers guys.

Hi there.
After a period of inactivity we can update you on what's fresh on our side of things.
We've put together prototypes for Crab, Tent and Conversion Kit and will soon post pics of it.
Also there is going to be a military version of the Crab...
The stuff that is absolutely new is a basic resi building (which means it's going to be cheap - around 8€ a pop).
You will also be able buy it in packs of 3 (cheaper - around 20€ per pack).
Because you can stack them.
And if you go bananas - you can do something like this.
Please visit our facebook page https://www.facebook.com/zenterrain and if you like what we do, don't forget to share.

Regarding your poll, I'll give you the Zen answer:
I want what I want.
35671
Post by: weeble1000
Regarding the poll: I can't answer that question. I thought about it, and I honestly can't answer it. Simple buildings are great...when they are done well. A poorly designed laser cut building can look like a total POS. On the other hand, I don't want to spend hours and hours assembling an overly complex building, and once a laser cut building gets up to the $50+ range, there had better be something special about it. Once the price point gets up that high (depending on the size of the structure and all) you're entering competition with plastic and resin buildings. MDF terrain generally competes on price. It is fill your table terrain, not make everyone jealous terrain. That said, your pieces look nice. The painted building is done well. Those pillars 'holding up' the balcony are going to get destroyed in storage though. They aint gonna last long freestanding like that. With laser cut terrain, you've really got to use the medium well. One of my absolute favorite laser cut buildings is this building from 4Ground. The design that you have in the railing of your painted building is also a good example. It is a nice design element that works well with the medium. It makes fantastic use of the medium. It assembles in about half an hour, it doesn't require painting, it looks great, it is unique, and it is cheap. Obviously you won't be making buildings like that, but my point is that this type of building takes advantages of the medium's strengths rather than highlighting its weaknesses. This is what the best laser cut buildings do in my opinion. It doesn't make the piece structurally weak, it adds a nice aesthetic touch that is consistent with the overall theme of the piece, it isn't a detail that can be easily added in a different medium, and the slots look small enough to not look really wonky if you can't get paint onto all of the interior surfaces.

Any idea when you'll have these available for sale?
We are aiming to open our shop by the end of August / beginning of September and will let you know as soon as everything works ok.
once a laser cut building gets up to the $50+ range
We're not going to be even close to that. That why at the beginning we want to use MDF/HDF/stiff cardboard. For example the hab should be around $10, if you buy in a bundle of 3 it should be around $27.
Honestly I think the highest price point we are going to get is around $35.
MDF terrain generally competes on price. It is fill your table terrain, not make everyone jealous terrain.
Yes we understand that but we strive to make nice buildings for a reasonable price, so you get the best of the both worlds.
Those pillars...aint gonna last long freestanding like that
That's why we make prototypes first - the final building will have some sort of strengthening around those pillars.
One of my absolute favorite laser cut buildings is this building from 4Ground
Yes that is a nice building but I wonder about transportation and storage though, it looks a bit on the fragile side of things.
As they say in latin ' de gustibus non est disputandum' so everyone has they favorites.
Thank you for such a long answer it really helps us to get better at what we do. I urge everyone to post such in depth thoughts, we want to involve you in the stuff we do. Remember we are gamers as well.
Soon we will post the pictures of barrack model which is our most detailed to date - and as it was a prototype it took couple of hours and swearing to assemble - that's why it got a complete overhaul.
It looks almost the same as the prototype but will be much, much easier to assemble. We will post pictures of the new design along with the prototype.
35671
Post by: weeble1000
I was worried the 4Ground building would be fragile as well, but at 20 bucks I figured it was worth a shot. It is more delicate than my other buildings, but it holds up remarkably well.
My terrain tends to get put through lots of abuse. Between drunk players and frequent setup changes/transportation the terrain pieces take quite a few knocks. But that's fine in my opinion. Terrain is for playing, and if it gets played with, it is going to suffer some rough handling. It is inevitable. You should be able to drop a terrain piece on the floor, pick it up, keep playing with it, and fix it later with some glue.

Well of course it's a walking eye! The benefits of a walking eye are many and clear!
Cool design, but it really *should* be a hexapod A quadruped with that limb layout would have a very hard time moving without toppling over, much less if was carrying cargo...

I hope in the distant future they invent something like gyroscopes and self-levelling servomachines ;-)
Joking aside, we're hard at work administering our webstore and it takes a bit longer than we would like. Until it opens the new designs will show up sporadically, but to sweeten up the wait there will some promotions during the opening. One of which will be a free strictly limited and numbered model for the first 50 registered buyers. We will show the model design soon.

Greetings.
We had a little break from the forums working hard on our web store and (fingers crossed) it should be open this week.
As I've mentioned before there will be 47 free robot models for first customers (pictures below) all with unique numbers.
There were supposed to be 50 but one (No.50) stays with us and No.1 and No.2 will be given away on Facebook - due to a misprint they can only be assembled in a closed version. One is going to a foreign fan and one to polish fan - be on the lookout for posts, they should be coming soon.

My problem with MDF is that it always looks so boxy. You can immediately tell it's MDF, and that's a bit offputting. Curved bits to break up the silhouette are essential. Your barrack is a great example of this, with a relatively small detail like the curved roof supports making it a lot more appealing.

Some really nice stuff there, but shipping is a bit on the spendy side.
Another idea would be to have the prices convert along with the language marker, because otherwise you need a currency converter up to check prices, which might put folk off.
Might make an order nonetheless, but figuring in the shipping could be a pain, especially figuring for a shifting exchange rate....

If you want to make an order the entry level is a bit steep but it scales better with bigger orders.
Will see how things go and maybe in the future we will offer free shipping with bigger orders (something in the area of 350$).

I like the apartments they have a nice design to them and are reasonably priced. The postage to the UK is pretty pricey though at least for small orders to try the product. Means I would probably go for some of the other UK based MDF Sci Fi terrain sellers because for the price of the shipping I could probably get an extra building.
Still wish you guys the best of luck and if I get the cash to put down an order that makes the shipping worth while I will certainly look into ording from you.

The flag is just to determine the website language.
As I've mentioned before I've added more currencies so you can view the prices in your native moneys (there are 3 to choose from).
I know the shipping is a bit on the pricey side but to be completely honest with you, other companies hide their shipping costs in their product price. I'd opted for cheaper products.
On top of that I absolutely make no money whatsoever on the shipping it all goes to the courier. The thing is cost can drop only where there is a certain amount of parcels sent every month, I'm at the beginning of my venture and I cannot guarantee that I make such an amount to the courier - so the answer is - the more you buy from me the cheaper the shipping will become.
Thanks for checking the site anyway - we will be expanding our range soon enough so please pop in form time to time.

I saw on your website that you have a 10mm category. As an avid Dropzone Commander fan, I'm excited to see more companies trying to get into that market. As it is, there are only very few and prices are somewhat high because there's little competition.
As some input, some futuristic, but non-art deco buildings would be nice. Also some non-standard buildings such as stadiums, elevated roadways or such would be something not yet offered by any of the other 10mm MDF manufacturers.

I work for a company that audits shipping (IE fedex ups etc). We recently expanded into Europe. You need to create a shipping profile with one of the shippers available and then negotiate the contract. The reason companies "Hide" shipping costs, is because they are able to negotiate those prices out.
EDIT: just read more thoroughly I understand you now

We've also put to the test a corridor / self supporting bridge system that we will expand with new sections in due course.
That will become a fully fledged corridor system with all sorts of junctions, rooms and doors all modular and simple to rearrange.
The straight sections can support themselves to form a bridge and can be connected and disconnected at will (no glue needed) to span longer or shorter distances. We will be testing T-junctions and cross junctions to see if they can work as a self supporting bridges.
Some elements will also be available in acrylics.

Cheaper shipping worldwide is now in effect.
Packages up to 2 kg had been revised - they are treated as letters by the post so it might take a few days more to ship - in return some of the prices were cut almost in half.
Packages over 2 kg are treated as parcels - quicker shipping but also pricier.
You can check shipping prices on our website under 'Shipping' tab.

Just wanted to say I appreciate the bundles you do. The Hab bundle especially as they are likley things you would want several of.
Separately they come too £19.71 but the bundle deal is £16.89 a two quid saving for buying a few at once isn't a bad deal at all.
Have neither the cash or the space atm but when I have both I think I will put in an order. They look like they would go well with the micro art studio stuff too so you can get plenty of vareity on the table.
What other plans do you have for buildings?
Personally not a fan of the semi clear acrylic for the benches, would they be available in pure MDF? If not does the clear acrylic take paint well?

The acrylic material is clear (like 98% or thereabouts) maybe it's not showing on the pictures properly. We're not considering making it in HDF only but I'm pretty sure you can paint over the acrylics (but why would you ;-)) as it is pretty much like any other plastic out there.
What other plans do you have for buildings?
There will be a few new ones (small) coming for the street set range. I'll post a few pics soon. We will also expand on the HAB range adding bigger base buildings and adding some variations to the old range.

I say semi clear because it's obviously coloured so not completely clear. The reason I would want to paint over it is translucent benches wouldn't really go with the look I want for my table. That's just a personal choice though.
Sounds good, especially the hab expansion. I like the hab concept a lot, the ability to make one big building or several small ones is a great idea.

I've been meaning to ask but wasn't sure it was worth a thread in P&M:
How well does hot glue work for holding MDF constructs together? I've been using regular white PVA glue, but for some structures it takes forever to dry and the buildings fall out of shape before it's done. Would hot glue / glue gun be better?
I really, really like the recent food stand. I need a protectotron to go inside it though...

Post by: drazz
I have not tried hot glue, but I expect it would be pretty poor.
I use wood glue and that works well. Bit of a slow dry as well, but good bond formed. And you can get it really easily at Home Depot or even some craft stores.

Hot glue is a pain and doesn't bond very well to both sides. It will usually bond to one side but cool too fast to bond to the other side, leaving a residue that can pull parts of the MDF off.
For MDF I tend to use wood glue. Put a glob onto a palette and use a brush to paint on a thin layer to what I am gluing. If the glue was too thick and seeps out, smooth with the brush or your finger. Then any excess can be sanded off fairly easily. Then clean the brush with water/paint thinner/alcohol.

The width internally is 55mm (between pillars is 51mm) and length is 80mm. Those are the dimensions for one module. The slot is 3mm wide and 20mm high.

Height of a module is around 63mm.

That corridor set would be really neat for a totally indoor game, you don't get to see very many of those.

Cool. I'm actually assembling some stuff I received from you this week (and already ordered another 100 dollars of terrain - love it so far!). One small complaint: I'm not very happy with the shipping containers. They are proving hard to assemble. The weird thing is: it's not because the cardboard section is too tight....it's actually too loose! I'm having unsightly gaps between the wood frames and the cardboard, and the wood frames slide around (even with glue) because they are not contacting the cardboard enough. I have the cardboard as far "outwards" as it can go and it still isn't a good fit. Very odd.
88704
Post by: ZenTerrain
We've had a few complaints about the fit being too tight before so we made the cardboard slightly thinner. We made checks with that type and everything seemed to be in order. If you find yours being to loose one thing to do might be painting the cardboard before assembly. The cardboard tends to swell a bit after that and the fit should be perfect. It should help with the gaps even if the unit has been assembled already. With the previous type when it was painted before assembly it made it nigh impossible to put together.

Ah, I see. Yeah I assemble before painting and it was too loose lol That said, they are glued now and will be good enough. You might want to make a note on your product page that you recommend painting the cardboard before assembly or something. WIthout that the gaps were difficult to work with.

I like the look but the size of the bar suffers from the size of most 28mm buildings. They just aren't scaled realistically. Yeah, it would mean the footprint of the building should probably be 2x it's current size but if you mentally look at the number of tables and size of the bar in the building, then think about how big most bars or restaurants in real life are, this is just small. I like it, and it's usable it just would look better in my humble opinion, if this were a larger building. I would even consider a second kit if it were easy to link them together. Perhaps offering an expansion with a dance floor and more tables or maybe a few booths and poles.. wink wink

Sure there "are" smaller bars.. the thing is, this one has parking and a fairly large bar given the amount of space.. all I was saying is that it would be nice if there were a way to expand it so it was as large as a normal bar.
As far as gaming in a tokyo-like setting.. I think that crowded of a table with that many buildings is out of the question for your average gamer. That would be a lot of really dense terrain, tall buildings, and while it could be an awesome diorama it would be extremely crowded for moving models around.
In SoCal I'm sure there are bars that are as small as the ones in question as well but the vast majority of the ones I've been in are roomier (usually by far). Fire code limits the amount of occupants that can be in an area based on square footage and clear routes to a safe exit. For businesses this can usually be a determining factor on a lot of things. I'm not really trying to turn this into a thing.. I made an observation and as per freakin usual the internet tries to tell me I'm wrong to have an opinion.. All I was saying is that "again" it would be nice if there was a way to customize the floor space of said imaginary drinking establishment.
On the new vehicle: What is the diameter of the wheels? I've seen a lot of good MDF vehicles and these look interesting but I would definitely want to hunt down replacements for those wheels.
77909
Post by: monders
I wouldn't think that far future bar owners are concerned with modern day US fire codes.
This is a small bar, that may not even on planet earth.
Your idea of a large bar is subjective because the places I drink in are, on the whole, about that sort of size (Country pubs near my home, small dives in city centre). Scaled up, obvs - I don't drink in tiny 28mm venues. What is this? A bar for ANTS?!
edit - please don't read that as me being a pr1ck. I know it's difficult getting a point across on the 'net!
FTR, I'd love to go to place where I wasn't stood in someones back pocket for once!
And another to be On Topic - I like that kit! As my Infinity career expands, I'm sure I could find room for it.

Post by: Dark Severance
MLaw wrote:I like the look but the size of the bar suffers from the size of most 28mm buildings. They just aren't scaled realistically.
There is a reason why 28mm buildings aren't scaled realistically. It is often easy to build buildings in terms of heights with doors, windows and floors but it is rarely done for length. However buildings in length and width to proper scale will take up more tablespace than gamers usually want. That is why buildings are always compressed. It is easier to do in 6-10mm scales but at 28mm (which isn't really a scale) it becomes harder.
Using the example of the bar, in the corner table area, you can actually put 3-6 miniatures there in that space, including one sitting down. You don't get that feeling in gaming though because only one miniature will fit there, this is because of the size of the base. There is a lot of room taken up by a 25mm base, not to mention added height, even though multiple miniatures (without bases) could fit there. When gaming it gives the feeling that it is smaller than it really is. If it was to be realistic with width to fit multiple figures on bases, then the bar becomes gigantic. Although that is great for an RPG setting, it isn't the best setup for wargames even games like Infinity. Yes the bar has parking but it is bike parking, making a place for 5 bikes, so the place is going to e smaller than the normal bar.

Hi. I like the crane a lot but see a problem with realism. I know you shouldn't overdo that in wargames terrain. It still irks me though that it not really possible for the crane to put the container on the flatbed on a truck for example. Or something such. Either the lift gets in the way or the supports between the legs are too low that a truck couldn't drive between them. Changing the supports between the legs so that a truck could drive between them would make the model much more believable and would be a not too difficuilt modification (I think). Still an awesome piece of kit and very playable with the lift and the plaform and the like.

The legs look about wide enough for a truck of some kind. I think it would be clearer if we had a straight side shot.

Yeah, I have plenty of loading style trucks that would easily fit in there... but that doesn't even look like the way this is designed. IMO, it looks like a truck backs up (not between the legs of the crane) and the crane makes a stack of crates inside it's structure. Even better.. if you're doing a trainyard, the rails are beneath where the crate is pictured and the same thing I described happens. I've heard Infinity has a thing for trains..

They keep shoving them in scenarios. Actually seeing trains on Infinity tables, not so much usually (train tracks have a nasty habit of dividing a table in two halves with a cover-starved no man's land in between - which makes for bad scenery for a system like infinity.)
Back to the crane: why does the grippy thing have to go all around the container? Seems like a fairly ineffective way to lift a container and put it down a few yards away? Don't such things usually look more like this, even on 'fixed' shore cranes etc?

Probably for the sake of a removable cargo crate. And since its made of wood or plastic.
82903
Post by: MLaw
There's so many different designs for cranes. It honestly depends on what goes through them most often I would imagine.
You could also just imagine that in the future, stricter safety laws due to some made up incident from the year 2021 or whatever caused docks to become more stringent about their gripper claw things.
Or.. maybe the green aliens from Toy Story took over?
Either way, I think this is more about rule of cool. There's things made by a few other MDF companies like Oil Dereks or other types of crane that have major functionality problems built in but they look like what they're meant to represent and they don't cost a ridiculous amount like a model railroad piece would, so I'd chock it up to a win. Knowing Zen Terrain, it'll also likely be extremely affordable.
This could also solve the problem you mention about railroad tracks. IF you set up a rail with a loading and refueling station, you could have a few of these (one for each side of the track at least if not 2), a fuel pipeline, a huge storage tank, a maintenance shack, and maybe a storage shed or whatever.

Eeeehhh, not sure about that. Not a fan of shipping container boards.

It's a shame the XIXth Century warehouse from MAS is too obviously 19th century. It's fame would work really nicely as a dockside board with the likes of the crane.

Love the command table. Excellent idea.
Any further estimates of when the Police Station will go up for sale?

The Police Station is with the painters at the moment and it's almost done as well. It should not be more than a week or thereabouts.

This terrain looks very nice and all that but the sci-fi terrain market is saturated atm. What we need is more fantasy terrain, ruined buildings, watch towers etc... Any plans on this front?

There will be something on the fantasy front coming very, very soon. Watch this space.
In the meantime, neon city signs available in the store now.

Do you guys have plans on making a battle mat? I see on your Facebook page that you have one but I don't see it in the shops. Was it custom made or a prototype? If it was custom made, would it be possible for you to mail who made it and get a similar product? I really need a mat to go with all the terrain from your store, you guys are murdering my wallet LOL.

We do have such plans and even made some test prints with a supplier but it was not satisfactory. It is on the backburner for a bit as we are going through a slight transition period.

Ooooh, interesting vehicles!
By the way, have you also considered making 6mm scaled terrain?

Are you going to be at salute or one of your stockists?

Are you going to be at salute
No unfortunately we missed the spot for this year - hopefully next year though we will be. We are aiming for Essen this year if all goes to plan.

We're thinking about 10mm - which is already tiny for the medium - someone suggested it will fit 6mm as well. Any particular game you wish it for?

Epic, Tyrants of War, etc.
I'd guess stuff like scifi art deco architecture would work rather well.

Long time no hear I'd say but we have not been sitting on our hands.
For now the MTV 'Badger' is ready to roll and on the store.
Soon we will show more of the upcoming stuff. Keep warm.

I'd like to see a company producing 1/72 scale Cowboy Old West buildings and scenery in MDF/cardboard.
