Well since Soda Pop don't seem to have (a current) news thread I shall see if I can keep this one updated

http://sodapopminiatures.com/

Just posted on Facebook: they clearly have an App for Relic Knights of some sort in the works (image links removed as they are now dead)

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Also here are the August release

and below are the darkspace versions of characters originally intended to be KS exclusive, but since the split from CMON soda pop are making them availabe

Nice idea with the app, think theres any chance they'll put the rules/army lists on it as well?

Could be very useful.

Well since you can download the rules (and the RK starters come with full paper copies of the rules) I don't think there would be any barrier to them doing it

but so far this is all they've shown

Can't seem to find what OS it will work on. My RK came on Wednesday (no thanks to the shipping delays and excuses from CMON) and I am VERY happy with the casts, they are the best Restic out there. They blow Mantics and PP out of the water, with crisp detail and no (thats right NO) mold lines on the vast majority of the parts has left thinking there is hope for the material yet. Will be having my first game this Thursday, Cerci Vs Noh to see what the rules pan out like, they read well but we will see this Thursday. My only criticism is the rule book, it is very well laid out, great fluff and a nice reference and painting section at the back all printed on high quality coloured paper, but the paper is so thin I'm afraid it will rip as I turn the pages! Thankfully they provide a small rulebook in the starter set (shock, I know right!) that I can use whilst gaming. So Mantic, PP the bar has been raised on Restic I will be judging the material by this standard from now on (it only takes two years lol!).

I'm interested in the app as well, this it the first game where I think such an app could be useful (although the dashboard isn't really much of a hassle compared to the off-table logistics some modern games require, for example X-wing).

Also happy to see Darkspace versions are going on general release, my friend forgot to pledge for them and he was worried he might not be able to easily get them at retail.

Are they not selling the cosplay Marie Claude? Weird they'd sell all the others but not hers.

Might just be getting released a bit later, I've got a copy of the mini from the KS it's in a bigger box than most of the single characters due to the extended stat card but theres nothing on the box that would suggest a limited release of any kind.

These are all the restic figures that were kickstarted, right? I like the designs and wouldn't mind grabbing some of them. They look like they'd go pretty well with Infinity.

Post by: Rolt

I wouldn't say their as detailed as the infinity miniatures due to restics naturally softer details, but they as least in line with the deadzone miniatures, which I think are great, so as long as you are happy with those their fine.

They put Marie Claude into the Cerci Speed Circuit starter box as the questing knight so they probably won't release her separately.

Post by: lord_blackfang

Yeah, Marie Claude is our default Knight

And going by the stats, she was the best choice for the starter, easily. She's versatile, reliable and has an army-wide buff that just makes life so much easier. She's also the only Cerci Knight on foot, that might have something to do with it, too.

They've not announced any specific plans,

but since they are putting out even the previous KS exclusives for general retail I think there's a reasonable chance they will (probably depending on them having enough cash to spend on whatever the minimum order is)

send them a message via their website that you're interested, the more interest they hear about the more chance they will do so

The Ninja thing looks interesting - and like it would be compatible style-wise with SDE (and probably why the new Candy & Cola in the SDE kickstarter were ninjas).

But I dunno if I could/would want to support another chibi-game. The art looks nice though, and I'm curious as to what they mean by "league-based."

When I think of a league based board game I think of Mordheim with bought items, experience, and injuries that carry over from game to game. I hope that is the case but my definition may be way off theirs.

These boardgame KSes do move in waves, don't they? Fantasy/Sci-Fi sports, "it's a skirmish game that can be played like a boardgame", dungeon crawls and now ninja games! With this and Rise of the Kage, all we need is a third one to make a trend. I'm completely fine with this.

I'm guessing that "League-based" means that they're going after the TCG market, or something akin to it. A boardgame with enough expandability/flexibility that you can set up Netrunner-like synergies in your team makeup, but without the massive scale and luck factor of an actual wargame. But we shall indeed see!

That strikes me as unlikely - but you'll be happy to know that SDE is heading that direction with a future expansion - they talked about it a little during the KS earlier this year. That's why the new cards they preview have a "crystal path" on them they said.

I suspect you're probably right (they are GWesque in their largeness)

I'd have hoped for 10-20% less as an MRSP, as while people buying from online discounters may well be able to pick they up at a price they'd consider reasonable, I suspect people buying in store may just pass them by as too expensive

(although with the fancy colour boxes & cards they probably do cost a chunk more than a mini in a plastic blisterpack)

Just letting you guys know that those are 3D renders, and not the actual resin/plastic miniatures.

So unless they actually upgraded their miniature production, those will definitely have the same problems as past sculpts.

It's a dungeon crawler basically. Choose a hero, fight monsters, get treasure.

I didn't get the big void mech, but all of those minis turned out great for me- probably top of their line. I was a little disappointed with the gun redesign.

It was pretty fun what little I've played (mostly a painter) - and the new 2.0 rules they are working on (which have been previewed for KS backers) seem like a decent improvement on top of that. I've never played/read the rules of Descent though.

But even the 1.0 rules are among the most straight-forward I've read. And I wish I could talk more people into giving it a go with me.

General tediousness of being the dungeon master. I have seriously never had a more frustrating time playing a board game.

Also a ridiculous initiative system. Imagine this:
The dungeon master has ~16 identical models that are scattered all over the dungeon in small clumps, usually. He activates 4 of them. One of the heroes then activates. Then the DM activates another 4 of his 16 identical models. Repeat until everything has gone. You need to remember for each model whether it has already activated or not.

I'm interested in the status of the Dahon - it's by far the best of the non-Kickstarter models created in my opinion, and it's apparently releasing in 4 days time in the UK via Wayland Games. But I haven't heard a peep about it, and it seems to be massively cheaper than expected in the UK (£14.70 vs $54 in the US).

It's been on Wayland like that for awhile I think it was a holder page that hasn't been updated since. the Dahon is not released until next year (it's not on the release list for the rest of this year) the price is most likely wrong too as it will most likely be Diamondback priced $50 ish. I had thought of ordering at that price I wonder if Wayland would honour the price or cancel the order if it's underpriced.

I'm sure they will go for the 'we are only releasing it in the US, not officially in the EU',

despite the fact that most of the big online sellers will get their stock from the US

so it will indeed upset and frustrate some especially when they said exactly the same thing happening with Relic Knights was not their fault (we didn't know it would be so late, we pushed back the release a month or so but we have a responsibility to our distributors)......

But this time they've know about the delays BEFORE they put up the release dates so they've no excuses left

That's just the art. More often than not the model will not match. Whether that's good or bad is up in the air.

And Orlando's right about space toilets. In all my years reading, watching television & movies, and anime - especially when any of them are set in space - toilets do not feature prominently.

...why?

I will say, for all of the sculpt problems this system has, it's just fun to paint things in bright colours and different poses! I just wish they weren't so very, very, very expensive in the UK, for something that is frankly not of premium quality. I feel no need to go beyond my Kickstarter Pledge, unless Wayland actually honors that £15 Dahon I pre-ordered several months ago...

Their metal releases will be just for their own website

Ninja All-Stars will be a KS in March - I think that's bad timing given everything else launching in March

http://sodapopminiatures.com/news/ninja-all-stars-coming-to-kickstarter-2015-02-23.html

NINJA DIVISION PUBLISHING ANNOUNCES NINJA ALL-STARS KICKSTARTER FOR MARCH/APRIL

Boise, Idaho, February 22th, 2015 –

Happy National Ninja Day! Ninja Division Publishing LLC and Soda Pop Miniatures LLC announces their global Kickstarter campaign to introduce Ninja All-Stars, a new addition to Ninja Division’s lineup of great games. Ninja All-Stars continues in Ninja Division Publishing’s tradition of world class miniatures and great family games.

Ninja All-Stars is a feature rich miniatures based board game exploring the mystical ninja island of Kagejima. In order to maintain peace in this magical land, the Moon Princess holds the Tournament of the Moon to draw together the bickering clans of Kagejima to compete for honor and glory using their elemental energies and mystical skills. Build teams of ninja from six unique clans, each with their own powers and abilities. Hire famous heroes and wandering warriors to join your clan to compete in spirited challenges. Gain experience and learn new skills to make your ninja even more dangerous for the games to come.

Ninja All-Stars features a unique elemental battle dice system, character progression, multiplayer challenges, single game and league play, and an amazing collection of high quality miniatures to represent your ninja in the game.

Ninja Division Publishing LLC and Soda Pop Miniatures LLC are bringing Ninja All-Stars to Kickstarter, this March through April, in order to engage our customers with our best proposal. Our goal is to fund not only the game, but expanded content featuring the many colorful characters, clans, and components we hope to bring to the product range, providing fans and collectors a larger world to explore and amazing rewards to enhance the starting community for Ninja All-Stars at launch.

Ninja Division is excited to add Ninja All-Stars to its powerful lineup of amazing games and products from studio Soda Pop Miniatures makers of Super Dungeon: Explore, Relic Knights: Darkspace Calamity, and Takoashi University.

What else is launching in March?

I have to say - I just really love Soda Pop's Chibi sculpts. I don't think I'm going to be able to resist Ninja All Stars. Especially, if as I imagine, they'll have some sort of SDE crossover during the KS.

I really don't need yet ANOTHER game I don't have time to paint though, so I hope they keep duplicates and whatnot to a minimum and keep the KS rather limited.

A lot of KS running through march

Ninja All stars
Myth 2
Blood Rage
The Edge

Is Shield Wolf's KS running though part of March?

I was hoping they wouldn't go as soon as this,

and although I don't think it will fail like Bunnies & Burrows did I don't see this going nearly as big as I thought it would with the completion (& with Forgotten King not yet at least shipping)

Edit: this is the presumptive March KS list

Wild West Exodus 2 - 1st March.

Blood Rage - 2nd March, 3pm EST.

Myth Expansion - 9th March.

Ninja All Stars - March.

Wasteman - March.

Impact Miniatures Chibi Dungeon Adventures 2 - March.

Raging Heroes 2 - March.

The Edge - March.

If it were another co-op board game it has enough family appeal in the character and art that i would get this is a heartbeat. However, seeing how its competitive and has no players vs everything mode as far as i can tell i'm much more hesitant. I already have a ton of other competitive games.

BTW for anyone interested i've seen the production pieces for Forgotten King and they look amazing for boardgame pieces. Really excited to play this one with my kids.

The key points for me are going to be what else is going to be included.

That Beasts of War interview certainly got me more interested.

Recuitable heroes and monsters?

Persistent characters and upgrades available over long term play?

Then I saw Momotaro and knew that my kids will be seriously tempted. Hell, they drag enough Japanese folklore/ literature characters into the game, I might even be able to get my wife to play.

(I almost want a Japanese edition so I can deem it "educational" and force everyone to play with me)

The clincher for me is if they give any of these characters Super Dungeon stats. All bets are off at that point.

I'm also wondering what price point they want to bring this game in at. The usual 100 bucks for a mini heavy game?

I will be super annoyed if Sodapop is hands-out begging before delivering my TFK product.

Especially since Sodapop who claims to be the 'definitive' chibi sculptor company out there and calls others 'pretenders' actually has a pretty awful track record of actually released products in regards to consistency in their Chibi line. While it is clearly getting better... Core box, Roxor and Von Drakk have serious scale and style consistency issues which shows a lack of product maturity. I do feel TFK will prove that product maturity... but if they are asking for more KS money before delivering TFK, that rubs me the wrong way and doesn't allow potential backers the ability to see the culminations of their previous KS either first-hand or by impartial reviews.

A lot of this does sound like Arcadia Quest clone... Just like in 2013/2014 the 'big thing' was CO-OP Dungeoncrawls with AI mechanics, the new thing is Team PVP combat now. Considering the rules flops from MYTH and we have still yet to see if SDE 2.0 will actually be good and coherent and playable in both regular mode and arcade mode, I am not sure I am ready to accept that these guys actually know how to write rules.

The only good thing they got going for them is good 3D sculpts and a nice theme. So even with TFK mini scale/quality and Rules being a questionmark with lack of TFK fullfillment, this at least has interesting designs.

I feel like this would have a much stronger launch of they had a ton of TFK backers singing praises with product in-hand before launching. Rushing to get more money at KS before launch leaves room for getting cash before a bunch of issues and unhappy backers for TFK get a chance to make informed decisions. (not saying there will be quality issues with the minis or rules, but it is pretty easy to eliminate that as a possibility by waiting)

We also need to temper that 100$ pledge because almost every 100$ pledge release ends up being close to 60$ at retail... and even lower if the gameplay is bad. AQ which is getting pretty universally good reviews can be gotten for 65$, so that 100$ pledge is already front loaded for the 'free' stretches which come later.

I think those are pretty much all but guaranteed to be included. It's so little effort on Soda Pop's part to make a few SDE crossover stat cards to suck in a whole new crowd of people to this Kickstarter. And as you say ~$100 is pretty much "standard" buy-in for these things anymore.

With 6 clans, I really hope they keep things to a minimum (i.e. I don't want 8 of the basic melee ninja and 8 of the basic melee ranged ninja per clan added as stretch goals). A handul of ninjas plus some grunts for each is fine by me. I'm assuming they'll keep their (great) "no exclusives" approach too. So you don't have to worry about buying everything during the Kickstarter.

Regarding the gameplay of TB- the original version is pretty unfun. Once someone gets ahead, they usually stay ahead. I probably wouldn't recommend it.

I can suggest Evil Baby Orphanage if people are looking for something in a similar format but with decent gameplay.

Well it's Kotaku/Polygon*, and their new head of entertainment was the previous head of The Mary Sue (one step above Jezzabel), so it shouldn't be too long now.

I have no problem "running" the thread, if that would be helpful. I just wasn't sure what the protocol was, and didn't want to step on someone's toes by doing it "wrong". Not knowing, and things being very early, I figured it would be best to ask first.

Announcing Relic Knights: Void Break

Soda Pop Miniatures announces the new expansion for the Relic Knights® miniature skirmish game: Void Break. Void Break provides a new entry point to join the Relic Knights® game, with a complete ruleset that incorporates errata and updates from over a year of player feedback and every unit entry, both old and new.

Taking place two years after the events of Darkspace Calamity, Void Break continues the Relic Knights® story with new fiction, backgrounds, and history. Void Break introduces over 40 new units across the existing six factions, greatly expanding players’ options when building their cadres. Among the new units, each faction gains access to a new Questing Knight and Relic Knight to lead their forces and unlock new gameplay combinations.

The final models from Darkspace Calamity will begin monthly release in July of this year, with the first Void Break units beginning in September and continuing through the launch of the Void Break book in early 2016. To better capture their stunning detail and over-the-top anime aesthetic, each new and dynamic model will be featured in resin, with large, centerpiece models in plastic.

.. mutter, mutter, invalidating rulebook too fast, unfair, moan, moan...

actually I'm pleased they are doing this and taking the game forward especially if there's a decent amount of new story/background in there

As to the minis being resin with the large centrepieces in plastic...

Hmm their resin LE stuff has been ok but not brilliant quality wise so I hope they step up the quality (and reduce the parts count) for the new stuff (or reduce the prices)

It's interesting that they have chosen to go back to resin for the miniatures the PVC clearly wasn't holding the anime detail of the faces I'm glad they've decided to go this route but hopefully they don't price the individual models beyond what reasonable to build a force - I know they are small numbers wise but still there comes a price point where you just say no.

Their resin has been a bit hit and miss in the past and as you say to many small fiddly parts that are badly attached to the sprues. They had to retire King Starfire as there was just to many problems casting it.

Oh and I really hope they can keep the scale consistent now the newer minis are clearly a larger scale than the older stuff to the point that stuff like the Prefects are unusable with the Novitiates

This is actually great news.

I really was fond of Relic Knights. It was astoundingly unique in it's way of play. But there were/are still a number of issues that really, REALLY need a new edition. For example, a number of scenarios were simply unbalanced, and many abilities (especially damage re-directs) were just too common.

Also, Squads being utterly useless was a big problem. But all of this stuff totally could be solved with a new edition!

Huh. I might have to check this out.

I'm assuming (hoping?) this is going to be a direct release rather than a Kickstarter?

Would you rather we looked at Imperial Knights as the reference point? That's going to be what? 1 year?

I think 2 years is not a bad timeframe, given that 1E had a few minor issues to iron out and clean up. SPM pays attention to those sorts of things, so I think 1.5E will be a net positive.

In general, if I'm actively playing something, and the rules are getting cleaned up, I would prefer a 1.1 or 1.5 printed ruleset over FAQ & Errata. If rules to my main game were released annually and incrementally refined with minimal changes, I would be OK with that.

Where it's not good is where those are changed for reasons other than cleaning up problems and streamlining play, but rather to change things just because.

Agree - I ended up passing on Relic Knights after wavering for some time and have been glad I did. As they too often ended up on the "miss" side of hit or miss. The problem switching gears now is that they have a crappy foundation to build upon, so even if the new minis turn out terrific you wind up with the range still being a pass.

Ditto. I'm been poking (as have some others) to get errata cards printed for the 2 dozen or so SDE:TFK cards that need updated. I'd gladly pay a few bucks for them too. Minis games have so much to fart with already to play - having to try to reference FAQS/errata for everything on top of that is too much.

I think parts of the LE Relic Knights models were Resin as well.

9 times out of 10, if its a company that isn't GW talking about plastic they mean Polyvinyl.

The RK LE Knights had metal bits.

You should probably add DreamForge Games, Kingdom Death, Wyrd, and Battlefront Games to that list of not-polyvinyl. Also Dust, if they somehow manage to avoid going bankrupt in the immediate future.

If it's CMoN-related (Guillotine Games, Soda Pop Miniatures, etc.), expect polyvinyl.

If we're getting nitpicky, Soda Pop isn't CMON related anymore... and KD has yet to actually release any Styrene kits, they're still Resin (Urethane) and one PVC release. Its still probably safer to assume that when someone is talking about plastic, they're going to mean PVC and then be happy when it turns out they aren't.

Some parts of the LE Relic Knights figs were resin, according to this 2011 review.

They've done a variety of special edition minis (available from their own website long term although they go in and out of stock, but only available to general retailers for a short time or not at all)

the one Ive still got was Candy Rush (below) and I have a vague suspicion that some of the Takoashi university minis were resin originally and then transitioned to metal

I cant help as to whether one shot had resin bits

Looking forward to the new Relic Knights releases. I've not got round to picking up the current book yet, so will wait for this one.

For once I'm on the right side and haven't just purchased the current version to find out its been invalidated, was close though as I was going to get it at the end of the month.

I wonder if they will do alternative versions of the current characters in resin that would be nice.

Quite a bit of the original Relic Knights stuff was resin. Nearly all of the Noh figures were resin, and the last two Knights to be released were mostly resin (One-Shot and Fritz and Sebastian Cross for sure) with metal parts for the smaller pieces.

Jah, I think I have a metal/resin One Shot and Fritz sitting in my garage. They're assembled, but if you want it let me know.

I'm assuming (hoping?) this is going to be a direct release rather than a Kickstarter?

Going by the wording in the announcement it seems a direct release. Specifically, the following statement:
Soda Pop Miniatures wrote:...with the first Void Break units beginning in September and continuing through the launch of the Void Break book in early 2016.

Having said that, I'd be okay with another kickstarter. I thought it was necessary to get the standing Relic Knights line up to par as most of the not-Noh human sized models that I have (and I ended up with every faction except Doctrine) are wanting. It's something I would still be willing to support, a "Get It Right" kickstarter campaign.

Not sure how it would play out, though, and I can understand why Soda Pop would avoid going that route if the first one left a bad taste in their collective mouth. I won't go into the issues surrounding the original Relic Knights KS but it would be interesting to see how a second one would be run especially with what they learned from the first campaign and their other kickstarters since.

Suppose a lot depends on what SPM believe the community reaction would be and how that would affect funding.

I don't see why SPM wouldn't have done a KS for RK:VB. Lock in the preorders to gauge demand, and deliver an on-time / early to maximize backer satisfaction.

Eh, the first kickstarter was a mess, and quite a few people(around here anyway) were a little dissatisfied with the models. I can see why they would avoid that- anyone can pledge a dollar and start hounding away in the comments.

Oh - that's uhm ... interesting. I was expecting this post to be about their new SDE dice/card spinoff game.

The eyes/face need work IMO. One of the reasons I find the Relic Knights line disappointing is that they never match the super cute art of the faces on the actual minis.

In terms of news - lets not forget this:

Spoiler:

Black-Handed Henry, famed reaver captain of the pirate ship Darkest Day, has decided that in order to defeat the Heroes of Crystalia he needs potions of his own. Captain Henry has conscripted various monster alchemists and detained them in his ship. Captain Henry will grant freedom to the first alchemist who completes his potion. As for the others, the plank of the Darkest Day awaits…

We are excited to announce the upcoming release of Black-Handed Henry's Potion Party, a dice matching game for 2-4 players, using the Super Dungeon dice. Players assume the role of a captured alchemist, trying to complete Captain Henry's potion before the others. Of course, as bad guys, a little sabotage may be in order.

This stand-alone, dice game comes complete with a full set of 16 Super Dungeon game dice, rules booklet, 8 unique Alchemist cards featuring new and exciting characters, and 8 unique potion recipe cards.

Black-Handed Henry's Potion Party will be available this August!

While I happily support SDE kickstarters, it's nice to see a game company nowadays willing to release some stuff on their own too.

And...Karate Fight. I'm honestly not sold on the quality of any of them, but I agree that it's nice to see diversity. Even if it's not my sort of diversity.

Oddly enough, not too happy with the news about Relic Knights 2.0, as it invalidates a good chunk of my Kickstarter order not very long after delivery, and Sodapop's UK prices are frankly bonkers! They really suffer from not having proper international distribution. Kickstarter was just about the only way of keeping things affordable.

Remember you can order from them direct via Ninja Ship which is only $11 for a box game or more (much cheaper than anywhere else)

and since I believe Ninja Ship comes from a distribution centre in the UK you probably won't have any tax to pay

(even if you do VAT and £8 to royal mail can still be cheaper than UK soda pop prices)

While she may be a model, she's also an artisan. Her leatherwork/vinyl is, IIRC, all done by hand (from conversations, I think she only doesn't do shoes..yet), and she does all the foam work and construction herself, as well.

Her breadth of knowledge about various methods of making clothing, armor, and cosplay materials is really, really impressive.

Miniatures will be resin going forward with only large centre piece miniatures in plastic

That'd be nice. I'm not sure how feasible that might be, however.

They have the plastic molds already - thank you, Kickstarter! - and I'm assuming they also have the resin masters stored somewhere. They could make resin molds from those masters and start selling the models in resin once the current PVC stock run out, same way they phased out the metal versions. Or they could change the PVC formula and do another plastic run.

No clue how they'll go about things with the existing line.

Slight bit of news.

Relic Knights Goes Resin

With Relic Knights: Void Break approaching, Ninja Division and Soda Pop are very excited to begin the long awaited release of the remaining Darkspace Calamity models, as well as some stunning new Questing Knights for some of your favorite characters.

The resin casts we’re getting on these new models are breathtaking, and bring the anime influence of Relic Knights to vivid life. The level of detail on the new models is crisp, clean and a delight to paint. Even better, they look stunning next to your existing Relic Knights collection. All models you see here are the actual production resins. (Or in Jeanne’s case the production plastic.)

The entire line of Relic Knights models will be available at Gencon. The new resins will be available for early release both at our booth and online at the Soda Pop Shop during the show, July 30 – August 2. See you there!

More pictures of the above models at their website.

Like the detail of the new models but when reading "Even better, they look stunning next to your existing Relic Knights collection" my first reaction was a gut-felt laugh. It's so true. I mean, just look at poor Jeanne next to Sebastian.

Huh - is Nyan Nyan going to be a cross-over character in Relic Knights? Or is that just poster fun?

@ Dentry - I'm guessing he's from the Alchemy dice game they are releasing soon. Previous "scrambles" in the update have previewed characters for that.

I think it's just a fun poster. Though I did notice that she's the only non-RK character there. Could be hints at something more, but probably not.

Also, with regard to the alleged dice game, I'm gonna plant my head firmly in the sand and pretend it's an autumn SDE clue. (Don't recall other scrambles in the FK updates. Odd.)

That's probably it - there was a Nyan Nyan cosplayer on their facebook page recently at the last convention, stands to reason she'd be there again.

To my knowledge SPM have not mentioned converting existing models over to resin. They have stated, however, that all new RK releases going forward will be resin.

No word on any other way to acquire that poster so far. I know you can sometimes buy prints from artists on Deviantart, but Reiq isn't offering it through his DA print store - he does sell a Candy print though. So maybe n the future?

Played the SD:T alpha demo, it wasn't terrible. Ran better than Warmachine Tactics (actually ran pretty well on my gakky laptop). Its definitely an Alpha/Beta build as there is no AI implemented, so you have to play as both heroes and Consul or hand off the mouse/keyboard. It takes a little too many clicks to do anything atm, which slows things down quite a bit, but I can see that being fixed later on. Consul is OP.

I could see picking it up when its released/Kickstarted.

I have to say - I'm super excited about the idea of SDE: Tactics. I assume it's in the vain of Final Fantasy: Tactics, (or better yet, Tactics Ogre)?

Were the characters the named heroes we are familiar with? (as opposed to just generic character classes)

New spawn point I am less thrilled about - namely as I am already DROWNING in SDE stuff to paint. Good gods Soda Pop, the second wave of the Kickstarter JUST shipped. Give me a few years to catch up.

Mention resin going forward for RK and redoing some of the "older" models. Good news I'd say. Wonder if I'm gonna re-buy anything as a result.

Also mentions new SDE stuff in October.

Interesting he mentions scale issues as a reason for redoing some of the older Relic Knight stuff. I wish they'd have taken that into account for some of the Forgotten King stuff!

Still - it's nice to see Ninja Division/Soda Pop growing into a real force here. They've got quite a diverse (and growing) lineup of products.

No, it was more like a gridded XCOM than like FFT/TO. There were no height differences in the one map, it was a lot like just having a video game version of the boardgame.

Were the characters the named heroes we are familiar with? (as opposed to just generic character classes)

I want to say it was a mix? It was the Barbarian and Fire Mage from the 1st edition box, and then the Knight with a Lance and Bloodborne Crossbow dude from Forgotten King VS a bunch of Kobolds

I suggest you read SPM's SDE:FK postmortem.

It's a very good read on the successes and challenges of the SDE:FK KS.

Having seen SPM's Relic Knights sprawl, result in a cap placed on Forgotten King, and the much tighter Ninja All Stars, I think it's safe to say that Legends will be a far more focused product on similar scale to NAS.

Soda Pop Miniatures / Ninja Division, (Web store back up, Masterclass resins available again) @ 2015/08/21 23:23:43

Post by: nkelsch

The problem for me is SDE:TFK failed to fix the issues of SDE 1.0 and added more problems, and their response on their forums was basically "We don't care, we like it this way with 5 hour overcomplicated gameplay sessions."

Without fan re-writes, this product would be unplayable. And Arcade mode is gaarbage.

And NAS has very suspect issues which were pointed out by the community only for "We don't care" response when it was pointed out how core aspects of the rules were broken.

I simply can't trust the Sodapop people as game developers... They make fun models (to a point, they can't seem to figure out how to make consistent scale) but I don't feel they are deserving of backing rules sight-unseen anymore.

And all the post-mortem shows, is they want more profit for figures, which means less and less value. NAS was almost choked twice by stalls directly caused by fraudulent stretch goals which were seen for what they were. And they may not like it, but retail price points have been cemented due to TFK. If you can't fill a 30$ add-on with the same number of models as the TFK boxes, people will not go for it.

Inability to write good rules, Ninja Division's greed and every KS since has been less and less value, Fake stretch goals, Model quality issues... Things are not getting better for them, especially when there is drastically better games with better rules coming out on similar timetables.

I didn't really have a lot of issues with SDE 1.0 - is it still 1.0 if you downloaded their FAQ and updated rules? - but my games were usually very simple core box runs.

I did! But Ninja All-Stars still produced, what? Nearly 100 minis? I feel like I am drowning in SDE minis atm having gotten wave 2 of TFK last month. I need them to focus on Relic Knights or something for a while (say a year or two) so I can catch up.

No doubt, SPM is minis-focused rather than rules-focused, and definitely they were lucky rather than good with SDE 1.0. (Kinda like GW in some ways, but even more scuptor-oriented).

Super Dungeon Legends Kickstarter

Soda Pop Miniatures and Ninja Division Publishing are happy to announce the upcoming Super Dungeon® Legends Kickstarter! This exciting Kickstarter will feature three brand new products in a single pledge: Super Dungeon® Explore: 2nd Edition, The Midnight Tower level expansion, and Super Dungeon® Legends boxed set.

Super Dungeon® Explore: 2nd Edition, brings players the rules from our highly successful Forgotten King expansion, in an all new affordable boxset. The ruleset has been updated to include all of the errata and clarifications from the last year of player feedback, and will continue to be fully playable with all existing cards. Super Dungeon® Explore: 2nd Edition, features new sculpts of the nine classic Heroes, all new kobolds, drakes, Rex the kobold ogre, and Starfire the Ruby Dragon. The classic Dragonback Peaks tiles have been updated and reimagined, featuring all new stunning art, to bring them in line with other 2nd Edition tilesets from Forgotten King, Von Drakk Ghost House, and Dungeons of Crystalia. To further increase replayability, all monsters come with multiple profiles. Battle shadow kobolds from the depths of the Nether Rifts, elemental drakes from the Fire Flows, a mighty armored kobold ogre, among others!

The Midnight Tower level expansion reveals the dreaded armies of The Midnight Queen. Armies of baroque-armored Nether Elves issue forth from the corrupted Tower of the Goddess. Within their ranks, cursed Spider Speakers summon scuttling hordes of spiders, spinning webs of shadow and poisoning their foes. Alongside them march powerful Knights of the Tower on spectral steeds, while Tower Stalkers lurk in the shadows weakening the mightiest Heroes, before their fellows strike the final blow. Three new Heroes take up the call to adventure: the rugged Hearthsworn Tincan, sneaky Cat Burglar, and brutal Riftling Warrior.

Super Dungeon® Legends is the centerpiece of this mighty Super Dungeon® extravaganza. Legends introduces progressive campaign play to Super Dungeon® Explore. Heroes battle through adventures earning crystals to spend on powerful new skills and abilities. Advance in class to unlock even more powerful versions. Dismantle your loot and treasure to craft bizarre and wondrous new items, under the watchful gaze of the Golden Eye of the Goddess. Two new and powerful dice are introduced—Citrine and Amethyst—providing new possibilities to combat. New smaller dungeon rooms and hallways make their debut, increasing the diversity of dungeon layouts. If you have always wanted to roleplay in the world of Super Dungeon®, Legends provides rules for narrative adventures, nonplayer characters, and out-of-combat skills. An all new world guide further expands on the realms, races, monsters, and personalities of Crystalia.

All this and more awaits you in just the starting pledge for Super Dungeon® Legends! As always, we have thought up a wide range of fun and unique stretch goals to further increase the possibilities for your games of Super Dungeon®. Over the next several weeks we will preview content for the upcoming Kickstarter. Be sure to check back every Monday and Thursday so you don’t miss a thing!

I just sold off my Forgotten King pledge, much to the chagrin of my kids. They REALLY wanted me to keep it. Damn the rules, they loved just playing with the figures.

I guess they may rope us back in AGAIN if they can simplify things a little bit. But if the sweet spot pledge has lots of new toys to play with, hell, we may end up with yet another SDE game.

Oops, probably shoulda kept SDE:FK if the kids liked it, but I hope you got a good price for it... Rules-wise, there are a number of houserule suggestions and a few variants to try and simplify and streamline the gameplay (e.g. Retro). However, if you are just playing the game, I don't know why you don't simplify it yourself.

I'm not sold on the sculpted eyes (smooth eyes, please), but I do like the notion of Legends expanding the game. Not likely to re-buy 2.0, though. Definitely going to watch SDE:L pretty closely.
____

Started a Super Dungeon Explore : Legends topic for the Kickstarter, as I know there will be plenty of discussion down the road.

Rail Raiders is a mash-up of sci-fi and classic Westerns in which the players assume the role of “space-train robbers,” competing with each other and with the “lawdogs” defending the trains. The game system is designed to be easy to learn and fast-playing. The box will include more than 30 Soda Pop miniatures, 100 game cards, 10 custom dice, 18 train car tiles, and game tokens. The game will be for 2 - 4 players, and plays in about an hour.

Rail Raiders will be funded through an upcoming Kickstarter campaign, with trade release planned for the second quarter of 2016.

Sounds interesting, but if they are trying to get this together at the same time as writing Legends I forsee issues, I'm also mildly concerned about them running it quite so soon, but we shall see (I also hope Ninja All Stars proves to be a fun game as that's probably going to be key to whether I'm interested in getting involved in another non-SDE game)

MiniaturesMarket is still swearing to me that the Dungeons of Crystalia tiles are on pre-order, and they're holding up a whole order of mine... And yet I see tons of online sellers claiming to have them in-stock.

Can anyone clarify one way or another?

Sounds interesting - but I am already out based on my current and future pile of unpainted SDE minis.

SPM is pushing full steam ahead on all fronts - I wish they'd slow down, or at least branch out more into other things.

I agree. I was hoping for a focus back on Relic Knights. That game really needs some additional attention to gain more interest. Right now, it seems like a one-and-done. And that is even with me knowing that Void Break on the horizon. Not sure if I should even continue finishing my SNCs or starting to assemble my BD forces.

At this point, my backlog of SP miniatures is stacking up. I passed on the latest KS and will pass on this too, unless it is a tabletop game (which it appears it is not).

Looks like they're gearing up for the impending Rail Raiders kickstarter.

And Ninja Division / Soda Pop Miniatures are serving as publisher for several new games:

Spoiler:

Remember The Agents being on kickstarter a while back. Anyone know if it's any fun? Thinking of purchasing it.

Another new game via Kickstarter?

Maybe they should spend time supporting their already released games. There have been a number of games that have died lately that have had better support than Relic Knights.... Golem Arcana, All Quiet, etc. Relic Knights could have been successful, but with the scale issues and unrealistic retail pricing, it needs some real support to be successful. Hoping Void Break comes out soon to address the already discussed rule issues. There is a great game here -- it just needs some attention and love.

Just got NAS and looking forward to trying it out. Reading about the combat dice issues has me worried, but just pushing models around a board might be fun.

Ninja Division Publishing and Succubus Publishing LLC are proud to announce Ninja Division Publishing LLC as the publisher for the Middara board game. Middara will be joining Ninja Division Publishing’s range of incredibly successful products including: Super Dungeon Explore, Ninja All-Stars, Relic Knights, Alien v Predator, Clacks, Raid & Trade, 12 Realms, DrunkQuest, and Crisis Tokyo.

Middara was funded by an incredibly successful Kickstarter and is currently in the final development phases, moving into production. Once Succubus Publishing has completed fulfillment to backers, Ninja Division Publishing will publish Middara worldwide. Beginning immediately, distributors and retailers may contact Ninja Division Publishing with all trade enquiries regarding Middara. Ninja Division Publishing will announce an official release date as production proceeds.

Middara is a cooperative storytelling miniatures board game for 1 to 5 players. Players assume the role of four adventurers in an ultra-modern fantasy setting that exists alongside our very own Earth. During the game, players experience in-depth, fully narrative-driven adventures. Throughout the adventures, players confront real dilemmas that will change the course of the story and its outcome!

one i'd have liked to back but couldn't afford at the time, good to see it should (assuming the ks fulfils) get to retail even if succubus doesn't end up with enough money for a 2nd print run

Interesting. I backed Middara and was worried that its value was out-pacing the experience of the creators. This should probably help ensure the game really happens.

Oddly enough, I did it to heal the wounds left by Relic Knights. I want to love again. So let's hope this turns out of for the best.

Anyone know how long SDE:Legends will be open for late pledges for?

Picked up a super cheap copy of Forgotten King on amazon, and am really enjoying painting up the minis, they look great with a simple basecoat+wash approach. Arcade mode is lots of fun too, so now i'm looking at getting some more stuff.

on 14th Jan they said

The pledge manager will be open for a minimum of 8 weeks. We do not have a firm close date yet, as we tend to let production drive that. We will make sure to give you at least two weeks notice before the pledge manager will close.

so that's basically mid march at the earliest, and keep and eye on the KS updates for the warning from the beginning of march just in case

"We've had many people ask when the Pledge Manager will be closing. Right now we do not have a specific date set. As we promised before, we will provide you with at least two weeks notice before locking down the pledges. At the moment China is still in full Chinese New Year swing, so even if we wanted to get production items started we couldn't. "

Orlando beat me to it - but this is from today's update.

Cheers, going to have a good look through the pledge contents, seems like a very generous Kickstarter!

Legends seems like exactly what the game needs as well, persistent characters and narrative adventures to play through.

RELIC KNIGHTS: PATH TO ASCENSION

Published by Nick Toennis, on February 23, 2016. Filed under News.

Tomorrow marks the long overdue release of the Shattered Sword Castellan. The Castellan is the first model in a line of all new releases for Relic Knights. Rivaling a Relic Knight in sheer presence, this 100% resin model is a massive centerpiece and possesses absolutely stunning detail. If you’re a fan of Relic Knights, you’re no doubt asking, “why did the Castellan take so long?” and “What is next for Relic Knights?”

Publicly, we’ve been very quiet about Relic Knights. (Some might say too quiet) However, behind the scenes we’ve been working feverishly. Relic Knights was Soda Pop Miniatures first line of models, and it carries a very special place in the design studio’s heart. When Relic Knights moved to be published under the Ninja Division Publishing brand, Soda Pop was determined to breathe new life into Relic Knight’s insane, over-the-top anime aesthetic. Achieving that vision meant ensuring each model captured the art perfectly, and was a delight to collect and paint.

Relic Knights began life as a hybrid resin/metal line of miniatures and then shifted to plastic. As Ninja Division took over publishing, the intent was to stick with plastic to finish out the models for Darkspace Calamity. We were determined to refine the process and bring the models to the high quality we demanded. Molds and production samples were made for almost the entire line of remaining Darkspace Calamity models: Asger Faust, Master Wu, Viper, Anthony, and the Rustbucket. Over several months Ninja Division and Soda Pop tweaked, examined, adjusted, and examined again. Concurrently, we began creating our resin 2015 GenCon releases: questing knight versions of Princess Malya, Sebastian Cross, and Calico Kate. When we received the first production samples of these resin models our path forward for Relic Knights became clear.

Relic Knights demanded a return to resin. Relic Knights began its life as a premium collector’s experience for hobby enthusiasts and that is where it belongs. Months of work towards the new plastics was jettisoned. We began preparing the remaining Darkspace Calamity models, as well as our future expansion models, for resin production. The human-sized models were quickly realized, while large models such as the Castellan and Rustbucket required significantly more work. The decision was made to move the release of these two epic models to lead the Relic Knight’s resurgence.

WHAT IS NEXT FOR RELIC KNIGHTS?

First up, it’s time to finish the Darkspace Calamity units. The Castellan will be available for purchase tomorrow, February 24th. Next month, the Rustbucket stomps its way into your Star Nebula Corsair cadres. In April, we begin the release of all-new Relic Knights models. Jenner the Seeker, a black paladin of the Ossyrian Order, further reinforces the corsairs. Releasing alongside Jenner is the Noh Empire Har Ancient, a member of an insane sect of Nozuki’s prophets. Following these two models will be brand-new units for all six factions, as well as expanded Radiant and Void options who can reinforce any cadre.

These releases are only the beginning for Relic Knights. This spring we will release a downloadable version of Relic Knights v1.5 ruleset, leading up to the release of the Void Break two-player starter set, and the Ascension expansion. Both of these products will include print versions of the 1.5 ruleset as well.

Relic Knights may have been quiet, but the Darkspace Calamity never stops. Over the coming weeks and months we will continue revealing the exciting plans we have for Relic Knights. If you are a veteran, now is the time to break out those cadres and start getting them prepared for battle. If you have never played Relic Knights, now is the perfect time to pick a side and begin your collection. Relic Knights is back and the universe will never be the same!

To my knowledge, they haven't stated anything about revisiting the current Relic Knights stuff. If their claim of RK holding a place in their heart is true, I imagine they want to go back and redo some things. Not sure how feasible that is, though.

So...all the old crappy restic stuff will be available in 'real' resin?

Or just the new stuff?

Or just the new stuff and some of the old stuff?

Post by: JohnHwangDD

I sorely doubt that the restic molds will accomodate resin - resin is inflexible, and the restic molds incorporate undercuts that is incompatible with resin or other hard materials. Old restic will continue to be produced as restic.

Although, it could be that they pull a restic "master", clean it up, and then pull resins off that... For micro volume, that might make sense.

Soda Pop Miniatures / Ninja Division, (Web store back up, Masterclass resins available again) @ 2016/02/23 22:24:08

I have to agree with John's assessment. Current lines for Relic Knights models are likely to continue as-is. All the press releases have mentioned the plans are for the Dark Calamity models and other RK stuff going forward.

Nothing's been said about going back. They definitely should, though. Having the core of the game be so lacking is going to make the rest of it a harder sell than it has to be.

I'm shocked you aren't going to snatch up all the mecha, Barzam.

Curious to see what that starter will entail.

Guess we'll find out how much that Castellan is going to cost. Not my preferred Relic Knight faction, but still an impressive looking model.

At least it has actual legs unlike those hunchbacked Menoth jacks.

I actually thought that the material for Relic Knights was fine, some of the best "restic" I've used. My issues were with the price, some of the character designs, many of the actual sculpts, and complete lack of support/community, at least for the EU. So moving to resin and replacing my existing big hardback book wouldn't much help in my eyes, but I suspect that I'm not the target demographic for the line moving forward, even if I was for the Kickstarter.

Being that big and made of resin, I'm sure they're going to cost way more than I'm willing to spend on miniatures. They're cool and I really like that four legged one, but I'm sure they'll be too expensive for me. Space Dandy though, how could I not purchase him? He's far too awesome of a character to not own.

I'd personally prefer restic for big huge stuff. I thought it was fine for anything on a 50mm or bigger. Stuff on the 80+ bases were totally fine in restic, at least from what I've built.

I do agree some of the sculpts and poses were a bit questionable though.

Price- wise, I've seen the stuff all over the place. I certainly didn't mind getting mine for bargain bin prices.

I agree - was super interested in Relic Knights during the KS - and almost pulled the trigger on a huge pledge. But upon seeing the finished minis was very glad I didn't. The new stuff does look great, but it (and future releases) are built on such a shaky foundation. I wouldn't jump into the range until that was rectified. (Though to be fair to Soda Pop - this keeps me from a lot of games - though it's a shame to see it happen to one that's all brand new).

I know! Between this and Sedition Wars, CMON quietly funded a complete range of cheap, good-looking Sci-Fi bases that completely disappeared to my knowledge. Although some "dynamic" models from the RK range were definitely not suited to being glued to them...

You can get the SedWars bases pretty cheap, but you have to take a bunch of other stuff with them!
