Nice! It really seems broken, but everything still looks new. Roll it in some mud, rinse a bit, then let the dust dry for a dirty ruin.
31789
Post by: gwaahr
the materials are broken, but the buildings are not ruins. Im going for a more generic sci-fi look, not so much grimdark skull fetishist Automatically Appended Next Post: undercoated with fluro linemarking paint zenithal sprayed over black and dusted with white
I blacklined them with a fineliner pen + silver/light grey edge highlights + gold bits, nice and quick
they happen to stack quite neatly into a larger structure, so i got that going for me, which is nice
If anyones interested in this set of terrain, ill be selling it off once im done painting it all as I dont actually play any wargames anymore

i did a pretty lame step by step of how im painting these for anyone intrested
spray random colours all over the black undercoat, alternating between cool and warm colours, im using builders linemarking sprays for this
dust with white, dust with yellow, dust again with white to bring the brightness up and is done

Those buildings look great, the colours really seal the deal
What kind of materials do you use for this? I spotted some old computer parts here and there (or at least, what I think are computer parts; I'm no Tech-Priest), but the rest is largely unidentifiable. I'm guessing that has something to do with a "Broken Garage Hole"?
31789
Post by: gwaahr
cheers guys!
ezra, the parts are a variety of components from disassembled dvd players, vcr tapes, cassettes, floppy discs, modems, power supply units, computer mice and whatever else i had lying around
theres a few mdf pieces (grills, doorways etc) added for detail and scale which are leftover parts from cnc miniature scenery

thanks again dudes, glad you like em!
malika are you the same malika from the anargo(?) sector website from ages ago?
and added a claptrapish brobot made out of a dvd laser
9394
Post by: Malika2
Yup, the same Malika! If you remember me from back then, you might also remember the Ork ships and robots I made from e-waste.
I am tempted to delve into that again, I was very tempted to make a model of a hive city of all sorts of left overs from computers, pens, lighters, etc. Maybe I'll do it again, but then more related to this project.
I can't wait to see you also giving it a shot with interior stuff, so chairs, tables, desks, closets, computer panels, etc. Larger spaces might fit vehicles, how about some equipment to lift up vehicles for example, cranes etc. would be quite cool!
31789
Post by: gwaahr
those ork ships and robots were really cool man! i actually hadnt thought of doing interiors, with the new infinity starter set coming out its probably perfect timing to give it a try

Thanks! Does the Infinity starter set include terrain? Personally I find your stuff to be more interesting than most of the terrain I've seen used for Infinity. Whilst their stuff is cool, it all looks like that generic CNC cut stuff, which lacks any real character. So please just keep on scratchbuilding your stuff!

Awesome, and inspiring.
Creative and well achieved use of (seemingly) random parts for a great result. Just keep disassembling if it is going to mean you'll assemble more of this afterwards

Wait is this a tower places on top of the landing pad? Well it could work I guess, but doesn't that defeat the purpose of a landing pad?
One thing that's kinda missing from these designs are the rivets. I mean, I know this stuff seems slightly more higher tech, so rivets might not be needed. However, the stuff does all seem to be scrapped and bolted together, so something along the lines of rivets and such might be fitting.

i like this stuff a lot, with less of a high tech/sci fi vibe it could work really well with necromunda, am sure i have some stuff that can be "recycled"

Post by: soulcow
Wow I've got to paint my Infinity miniatures first, but if I can scavage some e-parts around here, I'm definitely looking into making terrain out of it. The painting you did ties everything together and very sci-fi looking.
Could you explain what the 'dusting' is? Did you spray the colour from a distance to get this effect?

Radu Lykan wrote:i like this stuff a lot, with less of a high tech/sci fi vibe it could work really well with necromunda, am sure i have some stuff that can be "recycled"
Some rivets, spikes and skulls and it's perfect for Necromunda! Note that Necromunda had more of a cyberpunk feel than 40k has. So a lot more industrial and a bit less gothic.

yeah you guessed it, just spray from a distance, to get an overall light coverage that gives the illusion of a light source

I see it as all welded together. No need for rivets all the time. Looks great. Might have to go scrounging for some E-waste now.
9394
Post by: Malika2
Whilst the welded together look might work for Infinity, the 40k/Necromunda aesthetic seems to be more defined by vast amounts of rivets and skulls.
I am really digging this though!

yeah im just using whatevers arouund, Ive found 90's era tech has the right kind of 'futurism' for this terrain. I was doing a sculpture for an exhibition last year that I built out of e-waste parts and then grew salt crystals all over, so I collected a lot of broken electronics from the local dump to make that and ive still got a bit left over.

and im painting that laser beam machine, stupid thing is taking ages didnt predict how detailed it would be

I think the extra time spent on the beam machine is paying off, I'm getting a "Fallout Vault" vibe from it, looks fantastic.
I would like to see some chipping on the floor, or perhaps some small work debris in the corners, papers? Or just good old workshop build up.

Shop? I would just head off to the garbage pile! I don't know how it works in the UK, but here in Holland we have the garbage dump, which is where people bring their garbage which is too big to throw in the bin (old furniture, building waste, etc), they often also have an e-waste department where you can find all sorts of old crap.
However, like the shops they might charge you money or be difficult about it since garbage apparently is very valuable.

Well here in the UK.... well in my city anyway, there is a dump, electrical goods go into a container, they don't come out. If you turn up with anything closely resembling a TV it draws the attention of the dump gnomes and is hurriedly dragged away.
9394
Post by: Malika2
Can you throw the stuff in yourself? Is there a means of taking the stuff out of the container? Perhaps you could talk to the guys working there, tell them you need old electronic equipment for an art project or something. It might just work.

Wow your painting style is soo nice :p
If Infinity did have the anime feel already, I think your gritty style could have been a perfect theme aswell. The detailed minis with realistic tones are a nice addition to all the color many people use, including me :p
Can I ask how you manage to tie every miniature together? Do you drybrush everything with a same light color, or just highlight with a same color? like you dust your buildings?
And I like the skull base detail on the bandaged ghulam. I haven't seen such a thing in Infinity because it seems a bit too dark for the game, but it fits your style very well ^^

thanks man! I always use 'zenithal preshading' to give my minis an overall light source, then I use a lot of washes and glazes in a kind of watercolour style to give me my colours.
