My advice would be not to buy citadel brushes if you've got a regular hobby shop close by :p
I don't think my citadel brush was bad really, but I just found other cheaper and better brushes, so pay a little attention to other products if you want to save some money occasionally.

Your scions look awesome, the cadian colour scheme is way better than the official one
Your cadians look very clean aswell.
I do think you could easily highlight the boots of the scions, and some other leather items really, and maybe drill out the guns or paint a black hole on the barrel, but those are just details ^^ going to check out your tyranids aswell

IMHO, I think the citadel brushes are really not bad and they certainly will help ae1989 achieving even better results than what he already did with walmart brushes, but, in the long run consider investing some money in some like Winsor & Newton Sable brushes: They are expensive, but they will last much longer. Citadel brushes are cool, but they won't last *that* long.

Anyway, like I too said, they look pretty cool so far! Keep up the good work!

Nice looking. I have not been a fan of the new storm trooper models, however, your paint job is nice and makes me review them again.

He has painted the stormtroopers to match his army, not the french blue ones that GW painted.

Finished assembling the Taurox Prime and the first 5 Scions. Five of the Scions in this picture are from my first squad of 10 Scions, they just haven't been painted yet so I figured I'd include them in the pic. The next set of Scions I'll be assembling tomorrow will have a hot-shot volley gun, meltagun, vox-caster, then two more hot-shot lasguns. There's a Officio Prefectus Commissar in there too I need to paint. I'll probably save him for last so I can work on my painting some more. Also, since I have not touched the command squad bits that come with each box of Scions I bought 5 torsos/legs/backpacks/bases for about $7 on eBay. With shipping that's a Militarum Tempestus Scions Command Squad for about $10. I'll definitely be keeping an eye on eBay for some good deals.

Finally finished assembling. It's too dark/cold to prime them right now so I'll start tomorrow. The Scion torsos/legs/backpacks/bases I bought off of eBay should be here next Tuesday so I'll also have a command squad to go along with what you see here.

I like the scions a lot.

I might copy that color scheme (but maybe in darker greens) to make my own scions go with some Dark Angels. What do you think those colors would look like on the old Scion/Kasrkin models?

Wow that's quick work :p Do you think painting them with weapons attached is easy by the way? I'm painting 4 scions atm, and I have the heads/arms separately, because it seemed hard painting behind them.
Can't seem to find your tyranids you told about, do you have pictures/blog of them somewhere else maybe?

I'm currently bidding on a Kasrkin squad on eBay right now. For darker greens I think the colors GW used on their Scions weapons would look great on their armor. I think it's Incubi Darkness highlighted by Kabalite Green.

It's probably not the easiest way but I figured if I can't see right behind the weapons nobody else can. I'll see if I can find my Tyranids pictures, or take some new ones

Standard Cadian scheme looks way better than the colours used by GW, I'd switch the gold for silver / steel tho.

Silver on the trim around the Scions armor instead of gold/bronze? I was actually thinking about doing that. You think that would look better?

I just wonder what they would look like, the gold/bronze works fine as it matches the green and khaki.

Give it a try on the next one you do, if you don't like it, it is not so hard to go over the steel with the bronze

What about a really light grey stripe? Like Celestra Grey? Anyway, basecoated the Taurox this evening. I think I might invest in an airbrush just for basecoating the Castellan Green on tanks.

Except this bank is filled with hot-shot lasguns aimed at your face.

I want to start playing some games for once, but I realized that I have nothing to transport my army in. So I just ordered one of these:

I don't plan on building a HUGE IG/MT army, so this should be enough. I want to start another army once I get to around 1,500-2,000 points of IG.

On eBay yes. Plus about $4.50 in shipping, so it came out to around $15.00. I think I got lucky on this one, I bid at the last minute and won all of the little bags you see. Each bag was up for auction individually, they usually start at $0.99. It depends on how many people bid on it I guess. If nobody is really paying attention to it, you can get some REALLY good deals.

Here's a few other items I bought on eBay a while ago, they come in these little bags. It's pretty convenient if you only need a few bits. But I saw a whole set of Taurox bits up for auction so I had to bid on them. The grenade launcher did not come with the arms, I just put it in there for later.

Too bad ebay or secondhand selling these toys isn't really a thing where I live :/ And when it is, people want to sell full armies at once.
Still, impressed with you finding your bits at those prices. Why would anyone still bother selling those bits at these prices when there's guys like you around? :p hehe
Have you tried painting a scion with a silver trim by the way? Just asking out of curiosity (:

I did try one and did not like it. With the the silver already on the backpack and gun it was just too much. I still want to add a stripe or something. They need something.

I'm still thinking about trying yellow. It would be like the one GW does.

I could live with a Taurox for 10bucks(they are so silly looking by GW), but the ones with tires added, like the Victoria Miniatures set did, helps make them look a bit better.

I see you went with the missile rack on the back of that one.

Here's the four Scions I posted last time. They're almost done, I just need to do the eyes and wrist thing, and then base them. Also, I got the case I ordered today. It's a lot smaller than I thought it would be, but it will definitely have enough room for the size of my IG/MT army will eventually be. I may have to get another smaller one for some more IG tanks.

Comes with 3 infantry foam trays and 1 for tanks

There's room for another Taurox, Chimera, and plenty of space in the middle for turrets.

Nice case, and good painting!

Two things I would suggest, it may not seem like a lot but drilling out the barrels on the guns makes a huge difference, and secondly I would upload your pictures to the dakka gallery as they re size them and will give you the option between the original re sized or a new one that has been re sized and fixes the lighting problems if you are having any.

If you do start a Scion army, make sure you look at the instructions first. The piping that connects the lasgun and backpack only matches up with certain pairs. Same with the arms. It just makes the assembly process a lot faster if you match each piece before cutting it off the sprue. I wish I knew this before I assembled my first set of Scions!

Spent most of today painting, and I think I got a lot done. I'm such a slow painter though! I started sort of a production line with this unit of 10 Scions. After the 2 coats of Zandri Dust, and 1 coat of Balthasar Gold I got tired of painting 10 at a time. So for now I think 5 at a time is what I'll be doing.

Here's 5 of them after a wash with Reikland Fleshshade:

Here's the other 5 I basecoated with Zandri Dust/Balthasar Gold. And the other Scions I need to start painting.

Also, I have a question for you guys. What color should I do my Commander's coat? Or whatever it's called. I'll be painting the berets a dark red.

. @ 2014/12/18 00:22:46

Finished most of the basecoats, and put some washes on him. And I just noticed I forgot to apply a wash to his beret and I missed a few spots with green/gold. Still needs final coats of green/tan and a lot of neatening up. I'd say he's around 50% done. What do you guys think about the grey/red coat with the green armor? And I really wish I waited until after I painted him to glue his coat on!

I can't decide if I want to paint 5 at a time or 10 or 2. So now I'm back to 10 at a time, for now. Finished painting Leadbelcher on all of the silver areas. Next up is Dryad Bark which will go on all of the boots/straps/gloves. Also, today is my birthday. Even though I said I wasn't going to buy anything else until I finish painting what I have I went to the GW store and bought a box of Shock Troops. After I finish this squad of Scions I'll probably paint them next. I need a break from the Scions, and it will be nice to paint something simple like these guys. Should I leave the piping for the hot-shot lasguns black?

Anyway, here's some more pics

I'm gonna need a lot more of these guys so I guess it does make sense to start working on them again.

I'd say the piping is a chance to add some color to the model, obviously something that is totally abrasive maybe a dark blue?

These are the blues I currently have, with a few grey and purples:

Finished the Dryad Bark on all of the boots/straps/gloves today. Also painted the piping on one of the Scions Xereus Purple and washed it with Nuln Oil. How does it look? I like the idea of the piping being purple, but I don't want it too bright

It looks good, but I'd use the purple wash.

That army box will need 3 more Chimeras,,,,,,,Platoon can only fit the single 10 man squad, so another for the 2nd squad, 3rd for command team, and the last for the heavy weapons to get around the same time/speed as the rest of the platoon. But I am a bit of a "tread head" so a motorized company is appealing to me.

Been a lot busier lately than I thought I was going to be. But I did manage to finish the Runefang Steel on the silver areas and bronze. All that's left is some highlights on the green armor, eyes, wrist thing, and base them.

Finally got some stuff I needed to start playing. I think I may get the small format codex. Now I just need to convince some of my friends to get into the hobby so I don't have to drive an hour to a GW store :(

What should I paint next? I'll leave it up to you guys!

Command Squad/Commissar

Another Taurox Prime

Or should I start painting some more Guardsman?

Ugh, I'm so tired of painting Scions! I do need to finish them though. I probably won't be getting any more for a long time because I want to focus on IG. Guardsman are so easy/quick to paint so they won't take too long.

Loving your work and how your tempstor looks id go for a similar sorta scheme with your commissar but use more gold to make him really stand out.
I personally use the colour scheme for the 62nd Rhion Cobras which is similar to the Cadian but with green cloth where yours in tan.

Thanks! Taking a break from the command squad and working on my second Taurox. Finished the basecoat of Castellan Green and am now applying some Agrax Earthshade. After I finish the command squad and Taurox I have a commissar and a few more Scions that need to be painted. Then I'll be done collecting Scions for a while and will go back to working on my Imperial Guard force. I should be getting a Cadian Defense Force box set in the mail soon. That'll keep me busy for a while!

I'll be working on adding some weathering/damage in between periods of a hockey game I'm watching tonight. So it should be finished later tonight. The Command Squad is just about done. I just need to finish the banner and a few more things on the Commander.

I've taken inspiration from your beautiful Scions army to paint some of mine I had lying around for years.
They're the old models , which I think are quite good (what do you think about them?)
I'm putting a few of them here from the gallery, if you don't mind me hogging your thread (if you do, PM me and I'll edit them out):

Worked on a squad of Guardsmen today. I'm such a systematic painter and have to paint everything in the same order. I put the assembled Cadian Defense Force away so it's not as intimidating and am only going to work on one unit at a time. I'm going to try and finish all of my Guardsmen first, one squad at a time. Then I'll treat myself to the Leman Russ, which is what I REALLY want to paint! I might give green/tan camo striping another try.

Been really busy lately with school starting back up. And I ran out of Zandri Dust/Castellan Green and a few other paints. And the GW store by me is in the process of relocating and won't be open until this Saturday at its new location, so I haven't been able to restock my paints. I did get another Squad of Guardsmen. I know I have plenty to paint but I can't pass up a good deal on Ebay when I see one. And I know you guys are just dying to see some more Guardsmen! I noticed the images on the first page have been taken down, that's because I removed them from my imgur account and completely forgot I was originally using them for this thread. I'll probably fix it one of these days. Anyway, I should be getting back to work sometime next week on my IG army.

I didn't glue any of them in, same with the Battle Cannon. They all fit into their slots pretty tightly. So I'm going to paint all of them, including both cannons.

I've always liked Necrons, and with the new codex coming out soon it's a good time to start an army. I'm hoping the Necron Warriors will come with the new 32mm bases, I hate how their feet hang off the edge

A better color scheme? I tought yours was pretty ace already. Standard Cadian, but definitely better than GW's.

I'm only changing my Scions color scheme. I like how they look, but I don't like how they match my Cadians. Which is sort of ironic because that's what my original plan was. I prefer painting, I rarely get to play a game because there's nobody in my area who plays. And I can't convince any of my friends to get into the hobby because it's too expensive. That's one reason I want to start another army, so I'll have one for a buddy to try out.

That does sound very simple, but at this point I don't want to change my bases. I've already based well over half of my force. For my Necron army I'll be doing them a lot simpler

DIY stores for different size magnets and then what i found works best is to file down the weapon slot by the amount of the size of the width of both the magnet your going to put in the slot and the one being attached to the weapon, and use super glue to attach the magnets.

Played Necrons for the first time yesterday. And I learned that they are really good destroying tanks. This was a 1000 point game.

Nice and grouped up for me. I lost count of how many dead 'crons this guy piled up:

Two Chimeras with heavy flamers did some work on these two squads of warriors. Also the vet squads inside had flamers. I need to get some better weapons for my vets.

Command squad barking orders:

His tomb blades learned what First rank fire second rank fire was. Plus a few Autocannons:

His warriors/immortals managed to wreck my Chimeras. I think it was turn 5 in this pic so I just decided to charge him. It's ok, they have bayonets!

Sweet!
Who won?
It's nice seeing your nicely painted models in an actual game. Did you play your scions? I'm curious how they'd fare against 'cons.
What kind of list was he playing? Not wraith spam I hope?

He barely won. I did play my Scions, I used them to deep strike behind him and took out an entire squad of immortals, then died the next turn. He didn't have any wraiths, mostly warriors and immortals. His damn Warriors glanced my Chimeras to death. My Russ survived the whole game and amassed a huge body count.

Finished my last squad of Guardsmen today, and another Sentinel. That brings me up to 50 painted/based Guardsmen now. I should be getting a package tomorrow with some new toys. Let's just say my IG army is going to have a lot more firepower in the next week or so!

Sorry guys, been busy lately. Here's what I'll be working on this weekend:

Halfway into assembling the first Leman Russ I ran out of glue. I didn't realize I was this low. And it's snowing here so everything is closed.

Are you gonna have demolishers or something else?

One Demolisher and one Punisher. And I'll be buying some extra turrets online for all of the other weapons.

Hey mate, nice work

Pro tip for the leman russ demolisher kit, DON'T GLUE THE TURRET WEAPON; it slots in and out without any magnets, so you can have all 3 different variants from the same kit

Other than that, they're looking awesome

Nice looking army! I've always liked the classic guard look and yours are looking great.

I picked up one of the Demolisher kits and mix of guns sit fairly well without glue. I added in some magnets to help improve the hold but really you could get by without gluing them in. Magnetizing them was also fairly simple. I just pushed some greenstuff into the gaps and then pushed the magnets into the greenstuff. For the life of me though, I can't remember the magnet sizes I used.

Thanks for all the tips guys, I really appreciate them. Unfortunately I ran out of glue this afternoon and couldn't assemble everything. I did manage to assemble one of the command squads and the bullgryns. Currently painting the bullgryns and I'm really liking the way they're looking so far.

I'm pretty happy with the color scheme for my Bullgryns. I'm missing a few paints to complete it but I'll have them tomorrow.

Nice bullgryns, have you thought about how your doing your tank turret tops ie with stubbers or commanders siting out the top or just having the commander hatch closed?

Bullgryns finished, just need to base them. Pics coming soon. Starting on my two Leman Russ/Sentinels soon.

Gotta few more toys:

I'd love if you gave us a painting guide on the Valkyrie (and whether or not you needed a paint gun/airbrush). If it's like any of your other stuff, I'd like to learn...

I have an unpainted one, and don't dare to "just try it". I'm too scared to try without an airbrush, because I often have trouble getting a smooth paintcoat on vehicles with paintbrushes.

Normally I paint the green on with a brush, with lots of thin coats. But since the Valkyrie is so damn big I'm having a friend airbrush the Castellan Green on for me.

Few guys at the GW store I go to asked me to paint some of their models, here's the first one I completed:

It's also the fist Space Marine I've ever painted.

And here's what's next:

Astoroth the Grim is for a friend and Commissar Yarrick is for me.

Extremely crisp painting. Just went through from start to finish and I'm very impressed! I don't think that in the 8 years I've been painting I've managed to get anywhere close to this quality. One day maybe.... I'll definitely be following your progress!

That aside I was curious, about 3 or 4 pages back you mentioned you'd want a squad of the old Kasrkin models for your army. If I'm remembering correctly I have a chunk of them that are just sitting around collecting dust. I could let them go for a fair price on the condition I got to see them painted up finally! Let me know if you're interested.

Painting a squad of Dark Eldar Wracks for a painting competition thing at my local GW store. Here's a WIP pic:

Didn't realize until now that I chose 4 identical legs, I have a some more Wracks I can choose from so I may swap a few out.

I've been really busy lately and am finally getting back into painting so expect a lot more frequent updates.

Yeah I kinda want to get one of those for my krieg and space marines, but I am afraid the foam will rub the paint away.

That's why you gotta seal your models... Besides, the nice thing about this foam is that you push it open to get the models. There should be minimum friction between the model and the foam, whereas pluck-fill foam will leave room for the models to rattle around, or will be too tight and will cause friction.

You should do a little review on the case.
