All brilliant suggestions werkind and nevelon... I shall order the moon-paint immediately. And if you can come up with a dwarf joke no more than 8 characters long I'll think about it!
Hi beebopdrums, thanks. Good to see you around.

Yes, 2 dwarves is an argument, 3 dwarves, a war... Pratchett quote from the book I'm reading
Hey that could go on the flag if I shortened it.
2dwarf, arguement, 3 dwarf, war.
I'll put it in runes and see if it works.

Loving the conversions Weety!
The difference the bit of extra detail on a skeletal horse makes is unreal. They look so much more full of character now.
29449
Post by: weetyskemian44
Glad you liked them!
Here is a bundle of stuff I did this weekend.
A Necro-mage arrived in the post.
This ancient beast emerged from the fairy power spray. This one was truely lagged in paint and I've been soaking it for months. Does it herald a return to sci-fi?...
Quickly finished the eternal champion guy.
And finally finished my bright wizard. I'm very pleased with his everything.
I've just noticed that his coin-purses look kinda dodgy. I wonder if that's were he keeps the family jewels. Nudge nudge.
Went ahead and purchased more skeletal horses, Vallejo metallics and some vallejo metallic medium, so I'm not always doing NMM, it can get tiresome after a while.

Post by: Anvildude
Ah, perhaps I should have said 'bare' skeleton horses- the sort that you can do up in whatever scheme you want (like ancient egyptian, mongol, plowhorse, etc. etc.). There's plenty of skeleton European Warhorses out there.

Post by: Dr H
Will be interesting to see you do a Dread'.
Champion (like his red and purpleness, metal is great too) and wizard (nice staff) both looking great.
29449

Anvildude - its all sorted now I got some defunct tomb kings horses for a knockdown price.
Dr H yeah I think it will be the heaviest model I ever painted! Hands will get tired.

The wizards everything looks great weety, including his dangly bits
The champion looks nice as well, that was one of the models I wanted when I was a kid but never picked one up for some reason.
What chapter is the dreadnought going to be, something bright?
29449
Post by: weetyskemian44
Good question! I used to do SMs white and green with a red stripe but I might just paint this one a vanilla chapter colour. Painting white marines is a drag.

Old plastic beastmen. Can anyone remember if these chaps are supposed to have shields?
1
72556
Post by: Red Harvest
I never saw them with shields. But that arm position-- with an early version of rage-fist -- makes me think that they could have them if you wanted to add them on. Units could not use shields with Halberds in 4th ed WHFB, which is what I was playing when I first saw those (1997?). I would not worry about getting them shields.
That bright Wizard had a mounted version too. All the Empire wizards did at one point. Purple is the perfect color for wizards Looks very good.
Great banner on that Dwarf. Very nice work.

Post by: Nevelon
I just had a quick look over at Stuff of Legends, and there are pics in different catalogs both with and without shields.

Cool I'll go with no shields as I might play 4th ed rules with them one day and anyway I need the shields for other things.

Post by: bbb
If I recall correctly they were originally for Talisman, but got repurposed (like a lot of Talisman plastics) for single pose Warhammer regiments. So when originally released for Talisman they did not have shields, but when released for Warhammer they did.

Post by: weetyskemian44
Cool - I thought I remembered him from somewhere board-gamey.
Here is a prototype. I might do them all with different coloured skin and hair - sort of a 'mixed herd' look. But I'm pleased with this one - this marks a reintroduction to metallic paint for me.

Well I had a fun day thinking up varieties of beastman. We've had the blond sunburned one already.
A grey-skinned variety, complete with a fiery mane
This one is obviously a favourite of Khorne.
Some more common beastman types
Three more left to paint. Maybe I should do a piebald one...

I am a getting a strong vibe of either "You kids get off our lawn!" or a game of rock, paper, scissors and everyone chose rock.
Oh, maybe that is why Beastmen are so angry and hate humans, because Ole Farmer Giles taught them how to play Rock, Rock, Rock as a joke on the poor beasties.

Yeah but I'll always have pictures.
For some reason I really want to paint them in the old RT vanilla scheme - grey with yellow and blue stripes. Red is too cheerful. And they need dirt, lots of dirt, and scenic basing.
Also I broke the bank and got a couple of original sentinels for support.

Hiya Mymearan thanks for looking. They were a bit more original and sci-fi than today's guard weren't they. The sculpts are a little gritty though and reward a dirty, weathered paintjob better than a clean one.
Here's two more I painted. Its getting the helmet stripes straight that's slowing me down.

29449
Post by: weetyskemian44
Sentinels! These guyz are infinitely pose-able thanks to ball and socket joints and three part legs, also almost impossible to stick together thanks to a stupidly heavy body! It takes Green-stuff, drilling and patience. Probably understanding center of gravity helps. I cannot imagine everyone in the 80s having these skills which helps explain how horribly mangled and covered in weird epoxy glue these were.

Yes, this is one of the disadvantages of metal. But they never let that stop them! Oh no. What I need is a zero G environment in which to assemble the little blighters. Book me on the vomit comet I have a sentinel to assemble.
Actually I've done the next best thing and rested them upside-down on their heads while the glue and GS dries.
Yeah these are the really pre-historic sentiels Girrafex. Its amazing I can still find them for under a tenner.
I loved those 90s imperial guard Llamahead. Especially valhallans. What I love about the RT stuff is its sci-fi look. You get the impression that these are dystopian future warriors with lasers, not just ethno-military stereotypes like the 90s guard(especially valhallans).

Very sad. I'd of loved to see you repaint that. Hope you got a fair price!
The sentinels are on their feet, for now...
I think the subtle differences in how I stuck these two together illustrates its flexibility. If only they had made the body plastic it wouldn't have been such a pain to assemble. All I need is a third one to complete the squadron. I could make it sprinting with enough wire and patience.

Looking good! I remember the typical way to assemble the Sentinels back in the day was with a kind of "Z-shaped" layout.
I got about $500 for my large infantry army, made of RT models as well as the carapace/plastic arm-era guys and a decent sized detatchment of Squats on and off biked with a Warlord and Hearthguard in "egg" armour. I bought a Commodore Amiga with the money. At least I've managed to pick up a few of the RT guys again since then for eventual strip and repaint. JB wrote:Good thing that the Amiga is still cutting edge. What?
It's one of those things, I guess. While I regret selling the IG, but I don't regret getting the Amiga - aside from just spending a lot of time playing games, I used it for a hell of a long time since I learned how to type, and bolt more things onto it which helped me learn about computers and how to use them to the degree that they're part of my work today - and it was a great piece of hardware for friendships and bonding with people and other such fun that came out of it.
I only got around to binning it earlier this year. Unfortunately more work than it was worth to me to try and sell or resurrect.

Seriously, I understand what you're saying. Hey, you want an old sentinel still in the box? Not the original egg model that you have, but the newer chicken walker from the 90's? Plastic guardsmen to the rescue. The old guard never had a model for a flamer so I stole this one from the beaky marine kit. I'm waiting for pistols to finish the others and I've got two more torso's in the post. I really am going to have a whole assault squad!. Now all I need is ten jetpacks...

The red WD compendium had a section where you could photocopy a few banners and then paint them. Here is a link to mine as an example. Page 155 if that helps. They are specifically for the 5th Arcadian Regiment, F Company, but follow the same pattern as the ones flown by the 9th Necromundian.

Llamahead yes they do look just a bit sciony.
Thanks Valhalla.
Well heres the second squad, squad 1. Well they are the second squad I painted but they get a 1 on their badges... erm.
I have to hold my breath when I paint the stripes.

Thanks Azazelx, It was fun.
Squad 3 is next, The assault squad. And sentinels. I've got two more but with missing parts. I'll try and think of a way to replicate them. I only have one foot. Maybe I can press mold it.

Argh! I'm extremely jealous. I've got a bag full of those old plastic guys, but I just can't find the time.
The pedant in me demands that I point out that two of those guys with bolt pistols haven't bothered to take them out the holsters, but other than offending my OCD, they all look good.

Hi Shas!
More imperial guard painted. These guys are assault troops. I chose lots of swords to give them that gothic look.
These three are (from the left) medic, artillery captain and another mercenary I never got round to painting.
Another medic, with arms from empire militia, and assault trooper, this time with guns from a forge world steel legion dude - they look right for RT.

They look great. I also like the facial expressions and poses of the three gentlemen on the left side of the top photo. They appear to be distracted from their pistol shooting by something coming at them from the direction of the viewer. I like to imagine that something funny is happening in front of them that they haven't quite figured out yet.
29449
Post by: weetyskemian44
They do look a bit distracted from what they're shooting at.
This guy is never distracted from shooting, ever.
I went all out on his highlights. He has a base coat of the same blue-grey mix I've been using for the guardsmen. I wanted to tie him in, visually.

I love my repaints, think of it as a second chance to do a model justice.
I find fairy powerspray is the best for stripping. Monkeytroll recomended it and it smells of lemons unlike dettol, which to my mind smells like whiskey mixed with vinegar..

Hi evildrcheese and azazelx.
Well I've been busy but I'm stalled on the assault squad due to needing two more torsos. I bought some but then noticed the seller was on holiday, so patience is needed.
Instead I turned to the sentinels. Here is progress so far on the first two:
In an effort to get two more sentinels on their feet, I've been experimenting with press molding. Here is a press mold of the foot.
Apart from needing more feet I'm short on assault cannons. I'll be using the one from the space crusade marines as its the same size once excess plastic is removed.
Also I need another pilot. I think I might have a tank commander somewhere who would fit.

Well. Its been a while. Busy busy real life has been getting in my way, boo.
I had trouble setting up international sales. E-bay seems to think its enough to set a blanket rate for the whole bloody world. Maybe they reserve a better system for business sellers?
Anyway I finally moved forward on the imperial guard, which is great because I have a hankering to do some RT space orks.
One complete assault squad
Third sentinel is ready for paint! Note his space crusade assault cannon. Its hard to find complete sentinels so I have to adapt, improvise and overcome:
A swashbuckling Medic and heavy weapon for the command squad. They just need a flag and some finishing touches:
I actually have enough guardsmen now for a whole other tactical squad, but according to the lists that means I need another command squad. Might paint them anyway and sd the list. Also managed to score 3 RT era ratlings, so very rare I can't find two more to complete the squad!

Post by: Azazelx
This guy!
The Guardsmen are looking great, Weety. How many squads all up now? Three plus command section? The SC AC works perfectly on the Sentinel. It'd be hard to tell at a glance once it's painted.
29449
Post by: weetyskemian44
Yes three squads plus command, and the ratlings will be the auxiliaries if I can find two more. I've even got two RT tech priests to justify the sentinels. And two commissars which I painted last year. So basically a complete 2nd edition list imperial army! I don't think I've ever painted a complete army before. Technically two techpriests lets me take 3 more vehicles or support weapons, so room for expansion.
Group shots soon, I've started the flag and the first 2 sentinels are nearly finished.

Which list are you using? I just had a look at the Imperial Guard Army List in the Red Book (the one that goes with the models you're using) and it asks for 1-4 Command Sections (plus 1-4 Lieutenants to go with them), 4-12 Tactical Squads and 0-4 Assault Squads, so you're good there.
29449
Post by: weetyskemian44
I'm looking at the second edition list. I guess its not important but I like the idea that the army should be roughly correct, so it looks right. I'm glad it fits with one list at least.

Ok, I've got some days off before my new job starts, and a big pile of freshly fettled and primed 1980s space orks. So I'm gona paint some orks. make heaps of curry, and play skyrim as an orc.
Gone get some onion and garlic, blend them into a thick paste, chuck it in some gently sizzling butter and BAM! hit it with the spice weasel. Mmmmmmmmmm.
So what skin colour should Orks be? I've seen them done other colours and was wondering what you all thought?

I like the idea of giving Orks "realistic" green skin; tinting a normal skin tone with greens instead of reds/browns. See the couple of Orks I've painted or the many that Nerdfest has painted for examples.
Also, whatever kind of green you go for, vary the tones as you would with normal squad skin tones, rather than making them all the same, identical, green.
That's my opinion, might not be old school, but there you have it...
115
Post by: Azazelx
The flag looks great, as do the Sentnels. I wouldn't add more dirt to them, though you could perhaps add some rubble or bigger rocks (or flock) to break up the larger bases, but the walkers themselves look fine.
As for the Orks... if you're doing RT-style then there's really only one choice...

Post by: Red Harvest
This color?
Something bright and cheerful at any rate. Orcs are the embodiment of the power of positive thinking, y'know.
And coincidence of coincidences... just the other day I found some RT orcs buried away in my basement.
115
Post by: Azazelx
Well, green at any rate. There are a few variations that fit the RT ethos, which is actually a little darker and duller than people tend to think. 2nd Edition is where things really brightened up - before it all darkened again a fair bit with 3rd Edition.
There are a few versions of "Goblin Green" floating around, but Vallejo's or Army Painters both make good starting colours.
29449
Post by: weetyskemian44
Well I'm going with what you said Dr H and experimenting with different skin shades washed in green. I think they need more pink around the lips n cheeks n warts before I wash with green.
Red harvest - Its a sign from Gork and Mork that you should paint them!
Thanks Azazelx. Yeah it was less dayglow in the beginning looking at the catalog pics. Maybe the paint was just a different colour back then?

The paints were different colors. Much brighter. I think Mike McVey was the one who was in charge of that. The grimmer palette came when the Company switched to those abominable hexagon paint pots with the domed lids. The ones in which paint dried out readily.

If you can’t find any locally, I can check the bits box. I have a box of those plastic orks that have been sitting partially painted/assembled for over a couple decades now. But shipping them across the pond can’t be cost effective.

First day went well. Looks like I'll be driving a van. Not quite what I signed up for but it pays better wages and affords a little more status than checkout staff! Happy days.
Meanwhile in the world of rogue trader, an ork waargh is coming together, many clans congregate under a powerful warboss.
The blood axes will provide tactical mid-range fire with trademark discipline.
Snakebites, they are supposed to be primitive so I didn't give them any wargear. Just the axe, stikbomb and boltpistol for them. They will provide cheap close assault cannon fodder:
The Goffs are scarboy veterans and so get the the best killykilly stuff, enough to take down the toughest opponents up close and personal:
Deathskulls take on the role of long range support. They need more big guns I think.
Got lots of bits left over so I'm not done yet. Also I may add some GS details to give them more character.
Finally the army gets some tunes to stir them to battle!

Azazelx; White van man is a legendary uk stereotype. He will read the sun, but only page three, he has a skin-head but only to hide his balding patch and he always tailgates the car in front and swears in a cockney accent. Not the ideal role model for a new job!
Joshinjapan I'm building the army according to second edition rules as I have a copy. Probably never play with it, but wouldn't rule it out.

Well that was back in school. My first job at 16, up until my first year of Uni; till tart in Somerfield. Then I worked in Weatherspoons during Uni holidays. I think everyone should have to work in one of these kind of jobs; would probably make them better customers to know what it's like on the other side of the till or bar.
Teacher, no, not for me. Although I did do some demonstrating during my PhD and Postdoc (that's watching the undergrads perform experiments, teaching them how to use equipment etc.).
But until I find something to do with chemistry research, I'm an artist... of sorts.
Enough about my CV though, back to Orks.

Excellent work on the classic Orks - I love those guys. My favorite on this page is the blood axe standard bearer with bare feet. That guy is classic! He seems to have the outline of a bandaid on one foot though - if it is you should definitely paint it in. : ) I think the snakebite skin is very good, especially the open mouthed screaming one. Great job picking out their gear - one of the best things about classic orks is the random crud they lug around.

Whered the feathers come from?

Post by: weetyskemian44
Hey thanks kestrel thanks - I hadn't noticed the sticky plaster!
Hi cam, the feathers are the small leaves from the GW brass leaf sprue.
I really want to paint more orks but the people need their turkeys delivering and I'm very knackered. Hope to get a day off soon!

Anyway glad you enjoyed the orks.

Terrific work! I like that they are not just blue, but still recognizable as deathskulls.

Post by: weetyskemian44
Thanks wherkind.
High Novasetri, it was the style in the 80s for deathskulls to be multi-colour, with only the facepaint being definitely blue. I think the new style is for everything to be blue or white, which looks a little sad to my eyes.

Nice Deathskulls. The blue face paint is great, I really like how they've all got a different style too.

Somewhere between 10-20. Depends what I can rustle up.
I'm taking a break from orks now to do a horde of zombies! Its a commission job which is nice, and the regiment is made from a mixed undead/empire kit. A regiment of the fresh battlefield dead risen to fight again! Should be fun.

Merry Xmas everyone!
The long hard slog to provide the people with frozen turkey and prawn rings is finally over. Now the heavy drinking and movie trilogy watching will commence.
Hoard of zombies is coming on.

Cool, I love a good gretchin, especially these old ones and the newer ones. the single pose autogun ones from 2nd ed are fairly awful, and space crusade made them lanky and they look like hopping frogs. Hey maybe I should lop off their ears and make a frogman squad?
Anyway I've been furiously batch painting the couple of dozen orks I had left to do so watch this space for pics. I'm doing goffs and yet more bloodaxes.

Hello back again... getting a lot of work in the new job. I'm back on tills again but now I have a chair at least. Retail, its a bee-atch.
Hey graven thanks! I enjoy making them special.
First day off in a week tomorrow and I am stoked about some multipart plastic kits that came today. I've got some frostgrave soldiers who will be ideal for adv heroquest or just for armed civillians. They are too scruffy to be proper soldiers whatever they call them. Nice models, good quality plastic, kinda skyrim-ish in style.
Also picked up a sprue of samurai from Warlord Games. Stuck them together already. People have complained that they have boring poses, I've tried to make mine as interesting as possible. One of them has taken a head as a trophy, I heard it was a samurai thing:

Hi Doc. The client is very happy with the skelly regiment. I enjoy painting undead so its win-win.
Frostgrave soldiers are stuck together. Might have to get another sprue of these, they are perfect for fantasy roleplay.
I've tried to give them archetypal characters:
Paladin, fighter, thief, rogue or barbarian, choose your adventurer!

Cheers for the compliments! These guys will be new heros for adv hroqst as the earlier lot are all dead as doornails.
I went ahead and bought the frostgrave cultist sprue as I was very happy with the quality. They can be chaos thugs or something. While I was at it I looked at the sellers other stuff and fell in love with some tiny dogs and a donkey. One day I shall create a diorama for them maybe... Meantimes they can be a dungeon encounter, hireable henchdogs or something like that.

Nice work!
I’m quite fond of the not-quite old school wights and armored skeletons. I think that era is a sweet spot between sculpting quality and character. Modern stuff is technically nice, but often soulless. Ancient stuff is full of character, but often soft on detail.

Lots of work posted here recently!
I like what you've done on the old-school orcs. I've got variations on a couple of the Kev Adams ones, and I see the hand of Nick Lund there quite a bit.
The Skeleton Halberdiers are great, I really like the wight-ish armoured skeletons as well, and I'm always a sucker for proper oldschool/oldhammer metal skeletons.
Samurai have come up really nicely as well. That's your February pledge done now?

Well I've got 8 days left so I might get my frostgrave cultists done as a stretch goal. But Im covering peoples holidays in work so have very little time.
When it comes to boring jobs there is never the right amount of work. Its always too much to cope with or too little to pay the bills!
After the frostgrave chaps I've picked up a box of modern plague bearers to practice diseases on.
Glad to like them fifty. That's what goffs were supposed to look like!
