http://www.neoseeker.com/news/26434-mysterious-warhammer-the-end-times-vermintide-revealed-the-horned-rat-smiles/

Finnish gaming magazine Pelaaja has released the cover of their upcoming magazine, revealing an as-yet unannounced title set in the Warhammer universe. Introducing Warhammer: The End Times - Vermintide, a Games Workshop licensed title apparently themed around the race of the rat-men known as the Skaven. Leaked scans of the game imply it is likely an FPS, but little information is available. A countdown website has gone live with less than 24 hours remaining at vermintide.com.

The cover-art for Pelaaja features a horde of Skaven warriors carrying what looks to be a Skaven prophet of The Horned Rat god, a Grey Seer, on a litter. The Grey Seers are like the shamans of the Skaven race, they speak for The Horned Rat and push the respective clans into war as needed. I say it's likely a Grey Seer because of the skull cap the Skaven is wearing, which has four horns much like The Horned Rat is supposed to have. Of course, it could also potentially be a Lord of Decay, one of the 12 clan leaders of the Skaven race, but it's much more likely to just be a Grey Seer.

As of yet I don't believe there exists an FPS set in the Warhammer fantasy universe. THQ published a series of action games and even an FPS set in the Warhammer 40K universe, so perhaps Vermintide is Game Workshop recuperating from THQ's bankruptcy and finding another developer and publisher wanting to make this type of game. Rumor is the game developed by Fatshark, the Stockholm studio responsible for both Lead & Gold and War of the Roses -- shooting and melee first-person combat games.

Expect more information on Warhammer: The End Times - Vermintide in the next 24 hours. How did a Finnish magazine get the exclusive reveal for what sounds like a potentially hype game, anyway? No news on platforms yet, but my bet is this is a console and PC multi-platform title.

Scan of some gameplay, apparently.

It'd be neat if you played as a Skaven killing everything else in the name of the Horned Rat. Sadly more likely you'll be playing as a human killing hordes of Skaven.

Hmm, if this ends up on either Xbox at a reasonable price, I might be tempted. If you can play as an Imperial swordsman armed only a blade, pistol and feathery hat, hours of fun could be had... Although I do hope it features more than just Skaven. Some Orcs or Beastmen would be nice.

meh, would have been cooler to be a group of Eshin assassins or something working FOR the skaven.

I mean, as a human/good guy, you know what you're doing in the game is essentially meaningless. The End Times hasn't been kind to them.

Edit; The Heroes page on Vermintide has shadows of the PCs. Looks like a Witch Hunter, second one might be some kind of elf, third is definitely a dwarf, fourth I would guess is some kind of knight and the last is maybe a ghoul or something? Doubt it's a greenskin, but it could be some kind of flaggelant or something.

Just watched it again and noticed they set it (at least the beginning of the trailer) in Ubersreik, where FFG's Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 3rd edition focussed on as a launching off point for new players. 'The Edge of Night,' set in Ubersreik, was an adventure module that had an awesome Skaven twist to it. Man I need to get that RPG going here again...

I may have to buy a 4th Gen console now, just for this game.

The developers have made War of the Roses, which is their only really critically successful game, and it wasn't a smashing success.

Judging from this and the Deathwing game by StreumOn, whose only commercial release was EYE: Divine Cybermancy, it looks like GW is still going for very obscure and small third party development studios.

At least these two have a conceivable reputation to salvage and perhaps it could have a real outcome that is beneficial to these studios with potential, but I hate to say it does look like GW is going for a low budget approach with their video games.

Edit: And of course, the entire game is about Empire and Elves slaughtering Skaven. Who would have thought otherwise. The trailer almost seemed like it was going to be from the perspective of Skaven. I almost got excited. Oh well.

I think it's very much a mistake to say GW is going to these small developers,

more that these small developers are going to GW who are all to happy to say yes as they don't have a major developer who have paid for all the rights any more

If a big developer came along with a big sack of cash I'm certain GW would be delighted to say yes, but most of the big ones are only willing to make sequels at the moment (or their own new IP which they can try to sell to Microsoft or Sony in the future ala Bungie)

I played the crap outta War of the Roses for awhile, but I wouldn't say it's a well put together game. Definitely didn't have rousing success. EYE: Divine Cybermancy was fantastic in theory, but its actual execution was really, really flawed. So two studios who very much need a big hit, but are likely using the GW license just to get funds to further other projects.

And yeah, I'm not really at all excited about Vermintide. Had it been a thief-esque game with the player being an assassin or Gutter Runner against the humans and elves, that would have been awesome. Instead for skaven players get to follow the Skaven success in End Times by wiping them out by the droves. *yawn*

http://www.develop-online.net/press-releases/e3-vermintide-q-a/0207759

Q: What kind of game is this?

A: Warhammer: End Times - Vermintide is a first-person 4 player co-op game set in the city of Ubersreik during the End Times of the Warhammer fantasy world. It is the first time players will be able to experience the Warhammer fantasy world from a first person perspective.

Q: How would you describe the gameplay style?

A: Vermintide is an action-focused co-op game, where you and your team shoot, swing and bash your way through the Skaven legions who have overrun the city.

With Vermintide we are taking first person melee combat to the next level. We have put a great deal of effort into creating a truly visceral and impactful melee combat system along with a variety of different ranged alternatives.

We wanted the combat to be up close and personal and have created multiple systems to support this. Since we feel that the most important aspect of melee combat is feedback, players will be able to decapitate their enemies in a variety of ways and blood will splatter on any surface it touches to make sure that the player really feels their attacks connecting with the target. This also heavily ties into the gritty aspect of the Warhammer universe which is something that we wanted to portray in the game. And come on, its the End Times, the world is going under as we know it! The gloves have come off quite some time ago.

In addition to melee combat we have a wide selection of ranged weapons that players can utilise to become effective at all distances. Each character has access to a wide range of firearms, stretching from bows and crossbows to pistols and repeating handguns.

We want players to always feel like they are fighting against overwhelming odds to create a game where cooperation is the central focus. Players will need to constantly be aware of their surroundings and make sure to stick together and watch other players backs in order to to survive in Vermintide.

Q: Why are you making this game?

A: Cooperative games have always been a favorite of mine, there simply is nothing that can beat the experience of playing with friends and together overcoming overwhelming odds. Combining that style of gameplay with the incredible richness of the Warhammer brand is truly a dream come true for me personally and for us as a company. We jokingly say that Warhammer is in our DNA but quite frankly the truth.

Taking our expertise in melee combat from previous games and elevating it to the next level in a first person co-op experience has been hugely rewarding and exciting. Seeing this world take shape in a first person perspective, letting players experience the Warhammer fantasy world up close and personal is something that makes going to work each day a true joy.

Q: How has it been working with a licensed product?

A: We have had a very close relationship with Games Workshop throughout the development of the game. They approve every asset that go into the game to make sure that we stay true to the Warhammer brand. Its been great to have them there to support us in making sure we deliver something that the fans will react well to.

Q: Tells us about the setting

A: Vermintide is set during the End Times of the Warhammer Fantasy universe. This is quite literally the end of the world as we've known it. Our game is set during the beginning of this world shattering event, so the inhabitants of this world are still not really aware of the mayhem to come.

When the players arrive in the town of Ubersreik the city has just been overrun by the Skaven army. So it is up to them to join the resistance and fight back. Its really a story about how these five characters band together against impossible odds to become heroes.

Q: Do you have a favorite character?

A: It is hard to pick one since they all have their own unique weapons and personalities that make them special. But if I hade pick one it would have to be Bardin Goreksson our Dwarf Ranger. One thing that I love about him is that his perspective is lower than the other characters which puts the player at equal height with the Skaven. There is nothing quite like being able to look a clan rat straight in the eye as you bury a great axe in their skull. I also love going to town with his Grudge-raker (which is a double barreled shotgun) on an unsuspecting group of rabid Skaven slaves. I recently listened in on the voice recording session and quite frankly it's going to be hard not to fall in love with this stout fellow.

Q: Will I be able to play solo?

A: Yes, if you prefer to play alone we have bots that will take the place of the human players. This will allow you to experience the game on your own, while simultaneously removing any issues with players dropping out of the game mid session, since their place will simply be filled by a bot until another player comes in and takes over.

Q: Will you be able to play as the Skaven?

A: At this point in time we decided to focus on having the Skaven as our enemy so we could put more effort and detail into the 5 characters we have. Trying to create playable Skaven as well would simply have forced us to limit the effort we could put into creating a better experience for the players.

Q: Which platforms will the game be released on?

A: Vermintide will be released on PC, Playstation 4 and Xbox One.

Q: What engine are you using?

A: The Stingray™ game engine, which is an Autodesk Gameware product.

Q: When will Warhammer: End Times - Vermintide be released?

A: We aim to release Vermintide during the Fall of 2015

Q: Will there be any microtransactions in the game?

A: No.

Q: Will the game be released through Early Access?

A: No.

Q: Will there be a beta?

A: Yes! To sign up, check out http://vermintide.com/newsletter/

When War of the Roses first came out it was great, sadly it then went free to play and they fecked over all the people who actually paid for the game and then felt the need to try and change all the weapons to stop people complaining.

The Bright Wizard is spellcaster with an interesting mechanic – her spells are not powered or limited by mana. She can cast as many fireballs as she wants, but if she gets too greedy, she risks immolating herself. “She’s the only character in the game that can kill herself,” admits Liam.

http://www.vg247.com/2015/07/30/behind-the-unique-characters-of-warhammer-end-times-vermintide/

Perhaps due to the severe culling of its active product lines, Games Workshop has been free with licenses in recent years and suddenly we’re drowning in new and upcoming titles like Space Hulk: Deathwing, Mordheim: City of the Damned, Warhammer 40,000: Space Wolf, Battlefleet Gothic: Armada, Blood Bowl 2, Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr and of course Total War: Warhammer – to name just a few.

Of all of these, the one that’s really caught my eye is Warhammer: End Times – Vermintide, a first-person co-op action RPG where payers battle an infestation of the rat-like Skaven.

I don’t know that much about Warhammer, and one of the reasons I didn’t get on board was how generic the whole thing felt. Sure, some of the models were super cool, hinting at a more interesting fantasy universe, but in general it just looked like the standard Tolkien-esque elves and humans versus orcs and monsters set up – something all too common in fantasy in general, from Dungeons and Dragons through JRPGs.

Vermintide feels different, maybe because it’s the first video game take to be set during the setting’s apocalypse. My attention was first drawn when developer Fatshark revealed its mage character, choosing not the usual Gandalf knock-off but a sarcastic older woman with pyromaniac tendencies (see: my life goals). To my pleasure, the other characters similarly avoid lazy fantasy tropes.

Here, perhaps, is my gateway to the Warhammer universe, which according to friends in the know, is a lot more interesting than I had believed. For example: did you know that Rangers in Warhammer aren’t agile, sneaky archers? That’s why Vermintide’s ranger, Bardin, is an axe-wielding dwarf.

“Warhammer dwarf rangers don’t merely sneak around the forest, they come prepared for everything,” game director Anders De Geer told me.

“Clad in long chainmail and armed to the teeth, they turn the expectations of what a ranger is supposed to be on its head. The Warhammer universe is full of such surprises, and we like to showcase them.”

Even the most straight forward-seeming characters have a twist. Take Markus, the Empire Soldier: he’s a big gruff dude with a sword who just screams “default character”. De Geer confirmed that of the five Markus is definitely the one “closest resembling an average citizen of the Empire”, and yet his approach to life isn’t what we’d expect of the default warrior.

“He is a weary and disillusioned war veteran, fed up with military life, bloodshed, and most of all, incompetent leadership,” De Greer said. “He now seeks to reconnect with his family who lives on a farm near Ubersreik, so he is essentially on a journey home.”

Yeah: the typical tough guy just wants to get back to the farm and put his feet up, because war is for numpties. I don’t expect any fistbumps or shouts if “bro” out of him.

De Greer said that more complex characters are a natural extension of Warhammer lore, in which “there is seldom good or bad, only shades of grey”. Take the Witch Hunter, who is “least liked by the other heroes”, and in fact begins the game by arresting one of the others – but of course sees himself as the hero.

“If you would ask the Witch Hunter himself, he would tell you that he is of the highest rank in the group and therefore the natural leader,” De Greer said. “He would be quick to add that his cause is far more important than being nice to his underlings.”

In addition to the Bright Wizard mentioned above, the five-strong team includes a second playable female character, the mysterious Waywatcher. When you put the elven archer next to her magical colleague, what’s especially striking about them is that they’re not overtly sexual. Their boobs aren’t strapped under their chins; they aren’t shoving their bums and tits at the viewer through some amazing spinal choreography, they’re not stuck in permanent duckface.

This is almost unprecedented in fantasy video games, although not terribly surprising coming from Fatshark, the team who insisted on historically accurate warrior women in War of the Vikings.

“Since this is our own project, we can focus on what we want and think is best for our game, instead of being forced to comply with what external parties might think is commercially viable,” De Greer said.

“Our deliberate choice was to concentrate on creating interesting characters, and the results is what you see in the game. I think sexualization often feels like it’s used as a quick fix or shortcut instead of putting in a serious effort to create complex and appealing characters.”

In designing this motley crew, FatShark studied classic Warhammer class and race designs, hoping to ground characters in the setting “and make them believable in universe”, De Greer said.

“From smaller symbols and decorations to what material or hairstyle a certain race or class prefers,” he continued.

Fatshark didn’t feel shackled by its determination to faithfully recreate Warhammer’s lore – quite the opposite, in fact.

“The amount of available lore only helps us, in my opinion,” De Greer said. “It creates a frame of reference and a backdrop to work with, where we are free to explore the specifics in any way we want, as long as it fits in the Warhammer Fantasy world.”

Now that the Warhammer universe has been retired, it’s possible Games Workshop will give licensees the creative freedom to take it in new directions – but that’s not something Fatshark is inetrested in right now.

“Making games in the Warhammer Fantasy universe is what we’ve always wanted and we do not seek to change anything,” De Greer said. “We’re passionate Warhammer Fantasy fans, and we try to portray that amazing world as faithfully as we can.”

And there’s still so much of that world to explore.

“The Warhammer world is full of places, heroes and races that would be very interesting to work with,” De Greer said. “Of course we hope that Vermintide is just the beginning of our mutual journey in the Warhammer world.

“But what we want even more than that is to give the community a good, polished game, in fact we want to give them the best game we ever made.”

Warhammer: End Times – Vermintide is coming to PC, PS4 and Xbox One later this year.

Bonus points to Fat Shark if at some point the skaven are destroying a workshop that makes weighted, combat balanced spear points.

Then one of the characters sagely says "My god. When this is over, points will be a thing of the past."

It looks like it could be good, or at least fun, but I still don't know what they're doing with the Warhammer universe being destroyed (not "retired," destroyed). The whole point of making a licensed game is the appeal of the licensed property, and by the time this game comes out, the Warhammer universe will be long dead. At this point, why bother?

Looks like this game has launched already. Early reviews on Steam are surprisingly positive, so I'll be keeping an eye on this. Maybe it'll be on discount during the Steam Christmas sale.

Saltzpyre is by far my favourite character to play as. the only downside is I don't get to see the awesome witch hunter in action myself, but I am fine letting my allies witness his glory.

Loving this game so far. Only real criticism I have (which I don't even think is a criticism) is that the game is quite difficult even on normal. If you're with a bunch of players who want to lone wolf it, you'll fail probably 7of ten times. That being said, if you're with players that stick together and play to their roles, it can be really satisying to break through a difficult mission.

Highly recommended

Ok you guys convinced me, picked it up and having a blast so far

Yeah agree the difficulty is a notch above what I'd normally expect, but its cool, enjoying the challenge ^^ I like the loot system too, interesting take on risk vs reward

While you're at it, you guys shouldn't skip out on Mordheim either. Its AMAZING.

Yes, it isn't a technical marvel, but it perfectly captures the old game, and they are still adding new content all the time.

As someone who has been playing a lot of Frostgrave, it has really helped me scratch an itch when I can't find an opponent.

Have had a lot of fun playing so far, but some suggestions to people starting up:

- Two-handed hammers are terrible at everything except killing special creatures (and even then a rat ogre will most likely just shrug off the damage), avoid at all costs, swap out for a two-handed sword or just go the shield option until you get a good drop.
- Get a weapon with a decent 'Targets' rating (the width of the strike).
- Stick to the fastest firing ranged weapon possible unless you can get your hands on a weapon capable of one-shotting the odd packmaster, gutter runner, ratling gunner or globadier. Even the fastest firing weapon will still one-shot a clanrat.

Just got into Vermintide yesterday. Everyone is right when they say its a blast. They are also right when they say 3rd person would have been better. That being said, there's actually a fair bit of technical nuance in how you go about every fight that can keep things interesting. Even when its not and you are just standing at a choke point with a two handed hammer power swinging this way and that creating a WALL of rat corpses it never really fails to satisfy. Definitely a tick harder than most games on normal although i think that's because you always get one person who goes off on their own and starts events too soon or doesn't help the rest of the party. Grabber rats and assassins are pimp. Globideers, and gunners are either meh or WTF depending on the when/where. Rat ogres could have been a bit bigger honestly, and they don't really LOOK like the rat ogres i used to put on the table. The Stormvermin/Black Skaven look a bit uniform to me. Great start to their game but i fear in a month i'm going to be totally bored killing rats.

Yeah, I've been pleying for a few days and am enjoying it.

Really had to tone down the graphics and resolution though. I thought I had a decent system till I played Vermintide! I never saw both symbols on the Gamma setting screen so get some white surfaces sometimes but that's life!

The Blunderbuss is great fun but I desperately want something with a bit of range. Buying basic weapons rather than random weapons would be nice.

The Elf and Pyromancer both seem very powerful.
, not sure why I always choose the basic soldier in these types of game!

Rocking this game on Extreme settings (glad my computer is still good enough for this considering how much money I put into it... damn expensive hobbies!). I am having a lot of fun with it. I'm playing the Empire Soldier with a greatsword. Hacking apart rats in this makes me want to build Mordheim-esque table and make some rules for a tabletop version!

Actually the Two-Handed hammers are great at killing specials, Rat Ogres and cleaning up whole groups of rats. It's either Sword/Shield or Two-Handed Hammer for me. Piercing weapons ftw. You'll ALWAYS want a weapon with the piercing stat.

Today we are happy to announce our first meaty DLC, set to be released at the end of February.

In this DLC, we are introducing the new game mode Last Stand, where the heroes will battle wave upon wave of Skaven until they finally fall. With this gamemode, we will also release its first map – Town Meeting. Both the map and the gamemode will be FREE!

On top of that, we are releasing another map with a mouthful of a name – Schluesselschloss. This awesome new map is set outside of Ubersreik, on top of a roaring waterfall amidst the Grey Mountains. This will be our first paid DLC, but since we don’t want to split up the community you will be able to play the game if your join someone who owns it.

How long do you think you will survive the Last Stand?

Yes it is, the A.I isn't going to rock your world or anything but it's plenty doable. It's almost a carbon copy of Valve's 'Left 4 Dead' zombie blasting game, except with Skaven and swords. It's really great, I'm giving it a go on the Steam free weekend promotion and whilst I won't be buying it for a while (Just bought Overwatch and Doom is next on the list) it's a very solid game and I'm really impressed with it, the different types of Skaven foes ranging from assassins to poison wind globadiers and rattling guns was unexpected and really, really brilliant!

How do you even play the bloody thing solo? The only way I can find to start a game dumps me into multiplayer, there's no mention of bots/AI in the options I can see, and starting the game with Steam in Offline Mode just boots you back out again.

If I recall correctly, you go into the lobby (inn), walk up to the map and select your mission. There should be a bar along the top of the screen with the character portraits and an option on the bottom right I think (or maybe it says it in the top / middle just under the portraits) that says private game or private server. Start the game and nobody can join your game; Bots will fill the other player slots automatically.

I got it yesterday, and yes... it was very easy to figure out how to play solo. Checked a box, launched a mission, and that was it.

And wow... what a fun game. I find it hard even on easy, and I do wish it randomized the map-layouts and not just enemy spawns, but I can still see myself spending a lot of time on this.

Can anyone explain how the Forge works? I unlocked it, but they didn't explain it at all. Also, is there really only one piece of loot rewarded per mission?

"More than half a million PC gamers have already taken Vermintide to their heart, and this fall it's time for console players to do the same. The consoles will get an extended version that includes all DLCs released for the PC version to date" says Martin Wahlund, CEO at Fatshark, and continues". We are over the moon to be working with Nordic Games on this release as their experience and expertise are incomparable."

“The combination of Fatshark and Warhammer seems too good to be true. We do have quite a few fanboys in our team, who played Krater, Lead and Gold, and – of course – also played the hell out of Warhammer Vermintide on PC. To say we are stoked to work with Fatshark on Warhammer Vermintide for consoles and the physical edition for PC is the understatement of 2016 in my book” comments Reinhard Pollice, Business and Product Development Director at Nordic Games.

The console version will include the super challenging Last Stand game mode as well as its two maps, where the players fend off horde after horde of Skaven in intense and increasingly difficult battles. It will also include Sigmar's Blessing as well as the Drachenfels DLC, which contains three additional adventure maps set outside of Ubersreik.
