The yellow glows with it's own inner light. While I'm not a big fan of that head, I've never seen one painted better.

Thanks fellas, I really like how Kantor turned out, I've painted the purity seal I missed pointed out by Whaley and I've started Lysander but the casting is pretty crappy in parts didn't look so bad before priming but there's a lot of slippage and a few rather rough patches that I'll have to use some shading to disguise, but I'll still make him look pretty cool!

Now the next thing I'm going to ask is again about my GK army I'm looking to sell can you guys ask around and see if anyone is interested for the whole lot including codex and spare parts for $350 Aus? (plus postage) I need to sell it rather quickly now as I didn't realise i'd get a bill from ebay for selling my BA army that's be quite so high I was under the impression I had my first three listings for free but it seems I didn't and I really want to reach my goals this year of saving enough to renovate our kitchen in the new house

thanks guys, appreciate your help and I'll get some Lysander updates up soon for you.

Great work on Kantor. The work on the head is amazing as well. I think it still looks a little big, but that might be because he's shouting. The shading on the Yellow looks great.

What's in the GK army?

I know, I'm trying to remember what I have as Whaley's built half of it for me over yonder I think I've got these models for the GK's but I can check when I'm home tonight what I actually have and then pair it with what Whaley's sending me down

* Kaldor Draigo
*StromRaven Gunship
*Dreadknight
*10 Purifiers
* 5 Paladins
* 5 Terminators
* 10 man strike squad

That's what I think I've got at home, i'll have a look tonight though and write it up, then combine with what Mr W has

Just thinking about Devs for my IF's would it be a good move to have 2 Lascannons and 2 Missile Launchers with extra Marines so I can split it into two squads with dual heavy weapons in each? or just have a squad with 4 Missile Launchers?

*10 Purifiers (4 Incinerators & 6 marines)

I've had a look at Whaley's suggestions! and I may just have to get those two models to paint up myself! Pollux is awesome! and I also listened to Whaley again (why do I keep doing that!) and assembled a Tac squad, a Sternguard squad and a Dev squad for my fists using all random models I've not used yet and were lazing around in my bits! now I'll see when I've some spare money and might just make a purchase of a Land Raider, a Predator and a couple of rhino's (Whaley, you helping me on this dude? )

The IF looks great nerdy! I'm sad to see you give up on the BAs but I think you've done a even better job on the yellows in this new army. As others have said, your bare heads are fantastic and give a lot of "character" to the models. Keep it up!

Post by: nerdfest09

Thanks guys, I can agree with Gits that he doesn't look very chaplain and I attribute that to not having a skull helmet I was going to use the plumed Enkomi head but I think I lost in the vacuum cleaner and I'm yet to find any other heads that spur my creativity at this stage.

Glad you got to see Whaley's Admech RiTides and glad you liked it! it was a more gritty style than I usually paint but I really liked how it came together on those models, it just felt very 30K

Eggy don't fret mate, it just means you need to lift your game and continue the Red tide! I gotta say the yellow on my Fists is really enjoyable to paint, totally different in application to my BA models, this is a much more blended style but is easier due to the staining qualities of each successive lighter yellow

Face painting hey guys!? honestly I would love to do a proper tute, but I really need to actually show you but I am having no luck finding a way to video close work and pop it on the computer with my limited knowledge a step by step would be a bit too subtle for you I think as the whole process isn't a hard one it's just a base, a wash, and lighter highlights up to a final one with darker colours mixed into the skin tone to represent stubble and hair but if you can point me in the direction of a small video camera i'll buy one.

My camera can apparently do video, too. Very nicely at that! Thats actually an experiment for later this year... But yeah, most people use their phones nowadays for stills as well as videos.

Usually where people run into problems is uploading them. Takes a wee bit of data to do so. Or time... Depends on what your situation is.

I started LittleH's Orcs and wanted to use a style or colours that were reminiscent of what the models reminded me of, which was the early copies of white dwarf magazine! the muted browns and earthy greens just seemed to fit with the old sculpts, so far i've been working on the skin, it doesn't look much but it's a subtle blend of desert brown, olive green and rust red, the chainmail will be rust brown and cloth will be dirty leathers at this stage

it's a break away from my usually brighter style, even more muted than the last models I did for LittleH but we'll just keep going and see what becomes!

Thanks Cam, I do indeed follow Weety's work always a great source for inspiration and techniques especially on her old skool mini's! I like these guys skin too, i'm glad you think it's a good choice I was a little tentative as I usually do my normal green on Orkish models but this just looks right to me. lets hope I can continue in the same vein with them.

any colour I can't master? hmmm lets see I haven't painted white/bone before? and I don't like blues at all, even my Libby's are crappy compared to my other models I did toy with the thought of a bone coloured jungle Tau force a while ago.......

Lovely work! To be honest, that's much closer to what I reckon Fantasy Orcs should look like, the bright and 'loud' green is fine for 40k, but in most fantasy settings I like my orcs nice and muted,

I also applaud the fact you can so competently switch painting styles at the drop of a hat, going from the bright. colourful IF to these old-school Orcs so quickly and maintaining the same quality on both!

Can't wait to see these guys done!

Its an interesting start, I guess the problem I see with the Pic's is the skin tone very closely matches the rest of the model so at this point I can't clearly see your genius at work. Perhaps once the other colours are blocked in that'll happen.

So, if they're in a Rhino with Kantor how should I arm them? likewise they may see some action with Lysander too. The only two I know I want to make is a Company Champion & the Apothecary but the others i'm not confident on how to gun them up!

Thanks so much as always! They do look pretty cool all bunched up together :-) I started Bilbo and I was really looking forward to doing his face but one side has a large (for the model size) metal ridge :-( I've tried to clean it up as best I could but the positive thing is it's sort of hidden behind his little sword :-) I also started the two SH Termies and accidentally started them in metallic Red/gold thanks to not watching where I was putting my paint! Lol, s'o.k though I'll fixy :-)

I am going to put some feelers out there to do some commission painting of any character models if anyone has any they need done? I'm trying to earn a little extra money and if I do some smaller jobs of between 1-10 miniatures I can do them fairly fast. if you know anyone then shoot me a PM and we'll work out a price etc.

I do find it quite amusing you've painted a Frodo model with Bilbo's trademark jacket and waistcoat, but frankly you've done such an awesome job it doesn't matter, especially as part of a generic fantasy model collection. Lovely work on what I know is a very tiny and quite fiddly model!

Even if it IS a great looking little piece and I love the idea (very gritty whites, love em!), This is a tragedy and utter fiction!
We'll need to have words on how real history ended, nerd. A few choice words.

My people will contact your people.

(Seriously, though, nerdo... Great work on the diorama. Love how quickly you got your idea fleshed out. Very gritty, grimdark style, as we've come to expect from you. Im looking forward to seeing this finished... Looks like I'll have my work cut out for me in this competition =)

Nope, it was all me! as soon as I had my idea I just knew I had to get in with a swift jab at Ramos and his Errant Marines and keep in mind that the Marines Errant have the word 'Err' in their name.......

ERR
əː/
verbformal
verb: err;

be mistaken or incorrect; make a mistake.
"the judge had erred in ruling that the evidence was inadmissible"
synonyms: make a mistake, be wrong, be in error, be mistaken, mistake, make a blunder, blunder, be incorrect, be inaccurate, misjudge, miscalculate, get things/something/it wrong, bark up the wrong tree, get the wrong end of the stick, be wide of the mark

Finished the Mantis Maker entry, I wanted a moody atmosphere for it so went with a quiet almost slow composition with the mantis walking slowly away from the Errant marine as if in thought about his actions and what it means to be a mantis Warrior.

so without further hesitation I present my entry:

"Who am I to prove brother Ramos wrong?"

Nerdo, I love it!! Its just.... Wow....

Painting is excellent as always, and your composition is excellent. Its sparse, but every detail matters.
I hadnt noticed before, but the cape trails blood! Thats some brilliant attention to detail. The freehand on the cloak is fantastic, too

The MW has a perfect expression for your title as well. Not proud of what hes done, but he had to do it. Resigned to the fact that his "brothers" were to be his enemy. Its deeply moving.

Gonna be a top contender, I can already see that...

I'm so happy to hear those comments (well, read them) I really wanted to get more of a 'feel' into this piece with the models and where they were situated so to keep reading that it conveys the sense exactly as i wanted it really makes me happy! my favorite pic is the second last one with the deeper shadows it's the shot I saw in my head

the 'fancy' shoulder was a simplified version of my usual swirly things I do, I used white paint to trace the design elements and then washed with cassandora yellow!

I have an idea and I'm just spit balling here, it may or may not come to fruition one day but it keeps intriguing me to want to do it, the suprising part is it's not a loyalist force or faction, it's those nasty old Khorne guys and demons! I know they're nothing new and everyone's done some great conversions and forces but I have an urge to Nerdify them in my own special way, I've got this thing for Khornate hounds.....

The Barghesi ones from PuppetsWar and the ones with the Ogryn handler from FW all I want to do is paint them really really pale with veins under the skin and their extremities fading into a darker red flesh, black eyes and gums with aged bone teeth, creepy and nasty looking!

Daemon Prince kitbash using the FW Fire elemental head as a base, body perhaps loosely based on a Tyranid model with additions of armour and smoothed out musculature positioned to be crouching as if he's just hit the ground from falling through a warp rift!

Bloodletters, just painted different, pale like the hounds with black gums/tongues and the limbs painted as if they're charred getting hotter towards the fingers and feet where they'll be red or flame painted

Terminators based on the FW Butcher models just with added Damo! arm and head swaps to give the poses more flair, sounds simple but would probably be one of my faves to do (look at my Lysander, just a head and arm swap and it's a new model!)

Bezerkers FW upgrade kits on different bodies than normal, just not sure which ones?

Any other ideas you guys could think would be good? I'd love to play around with some gory bases too.......

but while we discuss my hobby ocd, even if I do eventually follow the dark path for a while i've got some more pressing painting matters to attend to first which may take a little bit of time, but be well worth the effort Whaley is sending me his 30k Salamanders army to paint up for him in the candy green I did Vulkan in I think the words '65 marines' and '20 terminators' were mentioned......

and I have some more Admech to paint this time for Gitsplitta a chicken walker, a crab walker and a bunch of the tracked guys as well as something that may be amazing and that i've wanted to paint for a few years now, I believe I've now got enough skills and know how to do this model justice for him. I won't say what it is just yet and leave you guessing but if Gits wants to drop a hint I'm cool with that

Little work on LittleH's models nothing too earth shattering but they won't take much more once I get a bit more time on them, the metal armour i'm trying a more glazed approach which is subtle but will come to life with some more shading and highlights.

first is a couple of 'boring' progress shots where it's not that exciting

LittleH's stuff is looking nice!
I'm liking the colors of the brownish-red armored guy. Care to elaborate on your new glazing experiment?

I really admire how you've really developed your own style. Between the gritty colors of these minis and your orks, the beaten look of the metals and Admech (which I finally got to see in person... really like the orange!), and the candy colors, it just really screams "Nerd painted this". I admire how you developed your own sort of distinctive style, and you just make it look so effortless! Im really jealous, you know that?

O.K thanks to Bebop and bloody AMAZING painting I'm really really keen to push my own work and do some more different styles or techniques, this has led me to be very excited about my next two or three projects which I will tell you guys about now

PROJECT#1
So, I have two commission jobs to do in the next couple months, first up is for Whalemusic and it's his troops heavy 30k Salamanders army done in the candy green that I painted Vulkan in previously this also includes a couple of dreadnoughts one of which I believe is Ashmantle! as well as a bunch of Terminators

This army is large and a rather scary prospect when you consider the amount of models, the good thing is the majority will be all of the same colour so the main part shouldn't take too long and then i can go squad by squad and blend in the flames and trims, gold trims I'm thinking? and instead of stylized flames I'll blend the flame colours into the actual armour plates, should look pretty sweet.

PROJECT#2
This one's for Gitsplitta, it's two linked projects, the first being a small Admech force consisting of (correct me if i'm wrong Gits) 1 magos, 3 breachers, 3 destroyers, 1 ironstrider walker & 1 Onager. The second part is a much larger endeavor but along the same lines as the admech and will be following the same theme. Yes, that's right I will be painting a REAVER TITAN! I got tired of waiting for Ramos to build a titan so I had to take matters into my own hands all these models will be done again in the candy style paint which I think will look stunning on the Titan in the same red as I painted Kiera

These two projects will be my main focus for the foreseeable future and leading up to them I'll finish LittleH's models and clean up my workspace ready for the painting onslaught

PROJECT#3

Not so much as a project but an experiment, after seeing Bebop's latest work I realised I need to try and move forward with my own painting, he has some amazing skills and the latest models he's done have made me feel somewhat lagging behind in the painting stakes so I've decided to paint some models that are different than I've ever done which should hopefully push me to do different things, I've always loved fantasy models but never like the idea of the game and now with AoS I still don't feel inclined to pick it up and have decided to try my hand at HORDES models particularly Circle Orboros the models for the most part I am drawn to, the warp wolves etc make me want to paint them as my own furry wolf pack and the griffons I just have always loved in any form or mythology and hopefully one day I can use them in a game. I won't be rushing them but will be using more of a wash method to get smoother colours and try some things out.

Raaaaargh! suprise, I finished a flying Hive Tyrant! don't really know how I did it I was only going to put a wash on the body and then I thought I'd just pop a little highlight on there then another wash just to get some shading and then before I knew it...... she was done

I wanted to focus on some real life creepy crawlies and the fact that a lot use bright colours to show a warning and danger to other animals , so that's the background for this model (her name is Bianca Bone-Chomp, after Bianca Beauchamp....... don't google that at work guys..... )

I'm not sure if I could copy the theme across more, I think if I did any more i'd paint them each on their own merit and what they said to me when I looked at them, but I really hope you like her

Great work on the Flyrant, Damo. I approve of the name. Or the origin of the name, at the very least. The model ain't too shabby, either. You've achieved a really nice organic touch on it with things like the veins and slightly mottled colouration.

Cheers guys, the Flyrant Bianca was a slow process since I really didn't know how to tackle her all I knew to start with was I wanted to have a crack at those Monarch wings, then it just went from them to the reddish brown ladybug-ish chitin and finding a colour that worked with the main body, so I kind of just picked her up every nowand then and did a little more, the drool is quite a bit but I had the image in my mind of her landing with her wings wrapped around her and slowly straightening up stretching them out and hissing as she raises her head, a thick slow dollop of gelatinous drool rolling from her darkened maw! her size and standing in the horde lending her the laconic arrogance of Alpha Nid!

I got a little package in the post today and it contained the primers and brand new brushes for the model i'm doing for Gits so now ive enough to do the Titan and the Admech without worry but we do have to do ONE thing if I may ask? we ALL need to go around to Git's place and help him look for the Reaver he seems to have misplace a TITAN! only a man who obviously has too much hobby to bury a model of that magnitude! but he has managed to send the Admech on the way so I'll be able to make a start on that while I bide my time.

also bought two Circle Orboros models with my paint so I'd reach free shipping nice little guys I've started assembling and begun some base coating which I'll show you progress tomorrow, I got a Gorax, and a Rotterhorn Griffon so I can play with some different styles and colours

And now for something completely different

it's a Gorax from Hordes, I wanted to see how I did with a fantasy style model and I must say I don't mind this not armour rage beast! lots of skin and the main body is nicely cast the head had some issues but I tried to hide them and it turned out o.k I had Panthra from Thundercats in mind as well as Oscar my black Lab so it's not how they're normally painted (from what I can see)

hope you guys like him

Mate... Stop it. I can't keep up.

It's like painting ADHD and there is only so much amazing painting I can take in for a month, first it was LittleH's admech baby stroller and chaos warriors? next was completed old sculpts (probably from LoTR but with all the amazing that's been posted I blame you for me not being able to place it)

Follow that up with Bianca (also I googled that at work... thank you again) who blows the water out of the pool when I was just getting settled. Now you post this hordes model...

I want it to stop, but I don't want it to stop.

Thanks EDC, I figured a very angry beast who barely controls his rage may, just may have lashed out and grazed his knuckles on something or someone

Hey Az, thank you very much! it was the skin or rather large expanse of skin that drew me to that one, I wanted to do some blending and see how I went and i'm glad your little package arrived safely, hope you like them, you've had a rough time lately and just wanted you to know others are thinking of you

O.K I suppose then that i've done a good thing? taken a crappy model and made it somewhat decent to look at with an appraising eye? was my first foray into Hordes models and I can certainly see your grievances with the sculpt it is rather top heavy and certainly cartoony, but I wanted to try and de cartoon it a little bit with the colours and while it's still bright I hope you can bear seeing a few more

Yeah, I meant no offence, your paintjob is up to scratch as usual (by which I mean stunning!), I just really don't get on with the WMH aesthetic. The skin and metal work on that model looks spectacular, and I definitely look forward to seeing you take on some more... That sculpt kind of has everything I don't like, I get a feeling plenty of the others are a little more to my taste.

Thanks mate - I hope you won't be offended if I do a little bit of touching up to make them fit in with the other Minotaurs I have been working on? Just little touches, very much in line with when I redo bits of my own older models while trying to leave the "heart" of the original paintjob plain to see. And of course, 32mm bases.

More work on the Griffon today, pretty much got his body done, just the armour, feet, talons, eyes and tongue to do then it's wings and finished I do really like this model but I know I'll never use it, I must have some kind of mental psychological block that lets me paint models but the rules just escape me so I can never get into another system, which is sad as I do enjoy looking at the fantasy models maybe i'll just do a random model every now and again to give away or something?

but until then, here's your update on the Griff.

Smashin' stuff!

If you're wanting to just branch out model wise without investing in games, then you're painting at a standard where even on a slow day you'd be selling for 2-3 times the price of the model in the first place, so it would essentially fund itself. Or just do what I do, paint all kinds of random stuff and embark on a 5 year mission to seek out new shelves to put it on...

Nerdfest09's Blog now with terain building shenanigans and a Mino Command. @ 2016/05/23 16:58:22

Or pick up more standalone stuff like Silver Tower, Zombicide Black Plague, etc in a fantasy setting without the hardcore investment.

Thanks for the advice guys, I might even look at doing my painting more like Ramos, doing some commissions to sate my interest and try new things, plus I can use it to acquire funds to buy myself some toys if I do indeed find something I want to do :-)

I have some more Orboros models to paint now thanks to Gits, he was sending them as a gift as i'm doing some work for him but I had beaten him to the punch by telling him I was going to gift him the models I painted for Orboros lol! so now I get to have the fun of painting them up and also the fun of returning them to a young man who can use them to crush his foes!

as well as the Orboros, I got a bunch of boxes of Admech to assemble and paint, so stage 1 is under way, we'll be going with the candy red armour and tarnished metals and I should have them all done in a few weeks then on to the Reaver when it arrives :-)

I really enjoyed the wings, they were a bit of fun and if I was to paint them again i'd go deeper into detail and spend much more time on them but as they are I think they add a nice bit of colour :-)

Not miniature related but I'm guessing a few of you guys would appreciate this

I've recently bought a Nintendo64 console which my mates and I used to play a LOT when we were in our early 20's and i'm really loving the level of fun that's so easily migrated to present day! my best mate and I started our rivalry as soon as we got back onto those controllers first we played Mario Kart and I whooped him every time, races, battles you name it I beat him which only added fuel to the smack talkin' fire he plays Princess Peach and i'm always Wario, so i trawled the web for memes on Peach and Wario then proceeded to flood him with message after message one night until about 2am then I went online and bought a Princess peach T-shirt which I hid at home under the couch until the race he beat me, there was much jumping from the couch and pointing at me while screaming 'Finally, got you you prick' I then casually reached under the couch and threw the 'prize' at him...... needless to say our rivalry is still strong.

next up we started the amazingly fun and addictive Perfect Dark a-thon Oh boy this is where it gets serious! since we can save our battles and increase in ranking it's a very serious game now so much cursing and laughter just because I killed my best mate with multiple head shots from a tranquilizer gun last time he arrived to play some PD I dressed in combat gear and a balaclava mimicking the clothes you can wear in game then ran out my front door and spun in circles ran into the wall a few times and slapped him like a novice playing the game with no gun (trust me that was funnier in person)

So, next time I've got 4 bunches of bananas i'll peel and lay banana peels all down my driveway and down the street Ala Mario kart

But the best one is under construction! I've a friend making me a custom pair of purple overalls and i've bought a Wario hat/shirt/gloves/shoes to make a sweet costume (thanks China), I also bought two large plush 'Red Shells' as you know these are potent weapons in the game! , Now, Adam works at a bottleshop with a drive through part (you can see where i'm going with this) So the plan is to get dressed up and run through the drive through laughing like Wario and throwing red shells at him before shouting "Imma Gonna Win!!" and running off into the distance!

I do realise this isn't the normal behavior for a 35 year old man but eh!.... it's gonna get a laugh

Also get the window writing paint at your local gift shop and write princess peach on his cars rear window while he is sleeping. When he wakes up in the morning and jumps in the car to go to work he'll see it in the rear view mirror and if he is one of those last minute people he won't have time to clean it off his car before work.

Well, I'm not sure how much internet he can get to at the moment, so I'll answer for him. Where Damo lives in Tasmania is getting wrecked by floods at the moment. Like, pretty hardcore. I had a quick chat with him yesterday, just to make sure he and his was ok, and he is. Sounds like he is on high-ground, so not hitting him directly, but it is, not surprisingly, effecting people he is close with.

Thanks for all the thoughts everyone much appreciated but we are all safe at home although some friends and colleagues had to be evacuated and the hotel I work at offered some free rooms for those affected on the worst night so we had a massive afternoon but thankfully there was only a few families that had serious damage or sadly loss of life Whaley picked a pretty accurate newsreel.

I have been grabbing the brush in random spare moments and took a couple of really bad photos to prove it

Gits Admech are well underway and should be finished in a few days time with some proper photo's once all the metal is highlighted i'll add the gold banding and green lenses then add some minor weathering and details .

Great progress on the admech too; even more so given the circumstances. I love the blue/purple weathering on the barrels!

The admech are looking great, the only thing that I find different is the purple on the barrels. Will that stay or is that phase 37 of 73 for the finished look? There's nothing wrong with it, just different looking than what I've seen other places.

I think the color on the barrels isn't really weathering, it's the heat from the gun taking the temper out of the metal. It would go from a deep purple by the muzzle to a light golden yellow before fading into the normal steel color (depending on the intensity of the annealing).

Thanks Brother, you're not wrong about the storm being a bit of a prick mate, she really did a number on us down here in the Apple Isle and indeed down the whole coast, I watched the radar as it came down towards us across the straight and we just braced for it and knew it may raise the levels as bad as 100 years ago, which it did even with the flood gates in place! crazy stuff!

Ha! thanks Theo mostly the affected animals were livestock along the river so we didn't see any Drop Bears or Tassie Tigers come looking for warmth and a dry towel

Don't worry about the barrels, the colour is quite light at this stage and will be darker when finished, Gits is right, I'm going for a burnt heat damaged effect but I'm not following it as closely as real world weapons since these guns are Martian and can have much varied pulses of weaponized energy or solid projectiles.

Gitsplitta wrote:I think the color on the barrels isn't really weathering, it's the heat from the gun taking the temper out of the metal. It would go from a deep purple by the muzzle to a light golden yellow before fading into the normal steel color (depending on the intensity of the annealing).

Correct Mr Splitta, as I touched on above with Theo i'm just sort of playing with the finish to see what I think feels correct for Martian tech

Big H wrote:The heat burn on the barrels is pretty sweet mate, all paint or some weathering powders thrown in too ?

Hey Andy! just washes for the blue and purple down the barrels and then watered purple paint to strengthen the colour, also LittleH's last two guys are still there nearly done so expect them soon!

Hey Fab, Demented workshop! I take it you refer to the Slaanesh phase I went through and showed everyone my Hels'ak? punching babies and kicking kittens I probably won't condone, but it does make me want to listen to Psychostick again......

I know i've said it a hundred times but I do really like painting faces and they're not that hard to do, I follow a pretty basic method and could push my technique further like the really good face guys but to be honest I like the way I do them and it's quick and only requires a good brush and a steady hand Ferrus was wicked fun to do in a day and the attempt at blending his metal arms seemed to have worked well if you liked it! and that's all I can ask for

Welcome to Admech heaven finished Gits army and I hope he loves them! (i'm pretty sure hell be happy) So here they all are, Candy style paint with a few little touches of colour here and there with the shock lances and weapons burn, the missile pods i've given a rougher look as if they've been fired so there's some chipping on edges and a bit more grime around them. The Breachers and Destroyers I thought were going to be too simple with mostly metals constructing them but I was happily proved wrong when they were finished

anyway now I'll just soak you with way to many photo's

Well, I need to say sorry for lack of updates the last week or so I'm just about to start on the salamanders for Whaley and the Titan should be en-route to me from Gits shortly and then things will progress in earnest I also may have picked up another small commission for a gaming club down the other end of my state, I was suggested to them via a facebook page and they may need me to paint 40 savage Orc with a command so that's nice that others are interested in me doing some painting for them, i'm really leaning towards doing more commission painting seriously so i'll say again if you know anyone who may want anything painted, be it a character or an army shoot me a msg and we'll talk

Now, i'm not the most cleverest man around, especially with technology, in fact i'm probably one of the most inept people you could meet all my internet workings are done on a old laptop and my internet connection is a postpaid broadband thingy you plug into the side of the computer, which as you may know means it's slow, I only get 15gig a month (I did only have 7) and it's unreliable. In this day and age it seems everything and everyone needs to be connected online more and more, with smart t.v's, ipads, watches, computers. well i got sick of it and decided to grow up and flow with the young kids yep I've signed up for the NBN internet with over 100 gig a month woohoo! and the price was pretty reasonable as well! so...... what do i do with it all? where do i go for cool games and movies to download and programs and all that exciting stuff I'll be able to do? i'll even be able to use the video function on facebook and actually talk to you guys!

I did also order some models for my Imperial fists command squad......

All marks from II-VI are in there at least once. There are lots of "Pure" armor marks, but I also used lots of MKIII pads on MKIV dudes, and did do some full mixes in there. I tried to make it fluffy with weapons as well. Lots of melta, flamers and hammers. Even on the Contemptor.

Yo, over the last couple of days I've had a chance to start some work on a couple of projects , Whaley's Sallies are now all primed and i've started washing the first green over them as well as doing a bit of experimenting on the dreadnought's arm using the blue horse blanket I did on LittleH's model a while ago as inspiration with scales painted underneath the washes to give a subtle effect to the armour which looks quite good with the gold over it (it's hard to see though in pics)

And I also did a bit more on my Imperial Fists Gave them the first highlight after the wash of sepia and started the metal bits on the bikes (they'll count as bikes as i just really don't like the current ones) and before anyone says anything, all the IF models i've used have been rescue models so there are and will be some models that are a bit worse for wear under the paint and i've cleaned the up as well as I could.

I used the Grey Knights packs with the antennae cut off the top to give them a sort of look as if the bottom ones are stabilizers.

IM genuinely intrigued by the scaled effect... Its subtle, but really REALLY adds something to the scheme.

Im surprised to see how light you start them, especially to get that super saturated candy green like Vulkan... Always a pleasure to see your process.

And your yellows go without saying... Love the color you've got on the Fists. I really dig the jetbikes. Are those really FW or third party?

Great stuff dude! This I can tell is going to be a fantastic army. Whale is a lucky fella. AS far as your ability to mantiain inspiration to beautifully paint another marine army is just beyond human lol. I only could paint one army in my entire live so far

In regards to the scale tech, I can imagine this in my mind that it's going to look killer, but I do wonder if maybe adding those scales when you've got a stronger intial color under it, as maybe you'll end up needing to cover up the scale effect more than you want to which might wash it out and in the end and it'll to be "too subtle" ? Again, just a thought and I know in the end it doesn't matter because it's you and it's gonna look freaking great.

Finally got some time and a hotspot to upload some pics! i'll be brief but I hope you like the progress, I started the banner bearer for the sallies and i'm not real good at flat work but it's coming along o.k

also I often mention how Ian Watsons Space Marine novel is my favorite book every it's so gritty and real even if it does contain things GW don't want you to know like Talking Tyranids and Squats and Ambulls, it's still awesome and gives some real life to the darker realities of being a space marine. In the novel it's described that the Imperial Fists are also artisans who get the itch to scrimshaw the hand bones of their fallen brothers, I wanted to show my unfaltering loyalty to Rogal Dorn by doing as much

Here's what i just posted in the painters thread
Hey guys I've started a rundown of my yellow here's part #1 of how I paint them, still a few more steps!

Prime with Army Painter desert brown

wash with sepia.

when dry use very diluted yellow to start highlights.

then vallejo lemon yellow to strengthen the highlights

and a basic of my greens with a candy effect. lol writing was smaller than I expected

green wash over white zenithal style spray

watered gold over pad

green wash over gold

deepen the effect by gold over the pad again

Thanks as usual guys! I think Rogal Dorn's fists are somewhat fluffed by GW as in the current fluff they only found one fist and in the book I read they have his Skeleton and his fists separate as holy icons in the book the chaplain also drinks a mix of the initiates blood and resin scraped from the tomb of Dorn then poops it out into shiny nuggets and reads the portents.

so here's part #2 of the yellow

Vallejo yellow green final highlight

then wash with GW Cassandora Yellow

Hand is looking cool. Are you going to integrate it into a display board or anything?

Thought I remembered it but I couldn't find it lol. I will have to skim through at some point.

It probably should get a sticky in the tutorial forum

I am so happy with what I've been mucking around with this week! I painted up 9 bare heads and started on a backdrop for my mini's to just experiment and see how the terrain stuff i got works and looks

so, firstly, what do you usually do when you get a remote control car? throw away the packaging right! not if you're a Nerd you don't a guy from security bought one and had it at work in the box and was going to throw the packaging out but i rescued it seeing potential straight away!
here's the plastic insert the car came on in the box:

I then grabbed some scissors and cut the two long edges off to make a shallow rocky mountain ridge like this:

I then cut some plywood to form a low backdrop which can be painted to resemble a horizon and anything i want to convey the skies of Evandalus Prime and then I used some pre mixed polyfilla or spackle to glue them on, it's still drying so i'm not sure how it'll actually hold them onto the board? I'm going to use more filler to create explosion craters where the models wheels used to sit:

And I tried my hand at making some cheap broken concrete, worked o.k I thin too, it's just plaster mixed with some black paint so when it breaks you don't get the white telltale showing!

Now, onto the head painting! I really tried hard to get work in progress shots but I couldn't get really good pictures so i'll just write as much or as clearly as i can to go with the couple of shots i did manage
firstly I undercoated them black and painted a slightly thinned coat of Tallarn Flesh on them all:

then i washed them quite heavily with Ogryn Flesh wash, this toned the skin and shaded the recesses so I can see where to highlight them next:

Next step was to create the first highlight we work with, it's roughly equally mix of shadow grey, dwarf flesh, bleached bone.

then I did the first highlight, don't worry if it appears quite rough, subsiquent highlights will fix it nicely and in the end we should have quite nice tabletop ready heads!

Next add some more bleached bone to the mix and water it a touch more so it blends better.

Next I added some more bleached bone, it's a really subtle method and as these pics show you shouldn't be able to see a really sharp change in colour, Once i'd done with the highlighting i added some black to the flesh mix and painted his shaved head and a little stubble.

I also added a small amount of Mechrite red to the same flesh mix and watered it down and painted the bottom lips on them all and the bared teeth on those that had them on show:
then lastly I just painted another wash of Ogryn Flesh over the skin on the face and did the neck seals metal and any bionics.

finally, here is how they all look when finished, i'd love to see which ones you all like and what you think of them? I have a good collection of different ones now!

Now, what troops should each one go on? who'd look best in Termie armour/assault marine/tac troops?

hope you liked todays update i enjoyed it immensely

until next week, and i'm working on something I haven't done before....

Yeah I really need to re do that head tute don't I :-) I just can't figure out how to get decent pics with the camera i'm using that show the mix of paint as well.

I could indeed use the hand in a display board Whaley I hadn't thought of that idea, it has a small stand I was just going to put it back on as a display to keep me motivated but would work as a backdrop for my guys.......

KC i'm using a engraving tool to etch into it the dremel I have is a bit wobbly and cumbersome so i bought a little pen style engraver and it's working well, I just do a few lines every now and then when I go past the Nerd cave :-)

Yo EDC the hand is just a little side project I thought of doing it probably will just end up fully etched and washed on a stand in my Nerd room

I have some finished pics of that IF sarge I was using for the small yellow tutorial and also some WIP of the squadmates he will lead!

IF looking stunning, thanks for sharing your yellow technique, looks so good, and easy when you do it!

Like to add, you have made the fact that they are Yellow work, what I mean is, I have a thing about the silly Space Marines and their silly mega bright colours standing out like a sore thumb in any environment, (pauses for trolling of how they are so brave they like being stupidly brightly coloured!) HOWEVER, your brilliant yellow looks actually passable in real world, could see that working, not silly garish yellow, instead they are mellow yellow peril. Brilliant work yet again.

Damn, that yellow is very sexy. Great job on the fists, I've got the 'yellow blues' right now personally. I look at my Fists on my table and go 'le sigh' then look at another plog on dakka

Is there any chance you could do a step by step for the Fists or a few quick little wip's?

Edit, saw them in the DakkaDakka Society of Fine Painters thread....very nice tuts and wip's

I got the models and bits for the creation of my Command squad for the IF's 3 Combi plasma guns, an Apothecary and a company champion! I really like the way they look and will be a cool unit when paired with Lysander or Kantor

So lets run through them shall we

Group shot

So the first guy is the Champion, he uses Pollux' head on Garros body with Sigismund's shield arm and a terminator shield, I do need advice with an issue I had with him though my superglue had a little bubble or something and when I went to use it it ran all over his chest which obscured some of the details and I don't know if it can be fixed or if I should just try and paint fix it?

next up is my favorite Vet, using the games day praetor as a base a 30k SoH bare head and sigismund's left hand I think

number 3 is combi plasma vet, uses a Palantine Blade body and a IF helmet upgrade with a mix of pads.

number 4 is a giant of an Astartes, an exceptional soldier with a humane streak and a sworn oath to mend his brothers under any circumstance, his bulk and single mindedness has seen him advance to where he is today at an exceptional rate. I still need someparts for him to finish him but I thought I couldn't leave him out.

lucky last Combi Vet uses Palantine Blades body again with IF helmet and cool sneaky pose!

There we go guys hope they're o.k!

whalemusic360 wrote:What's with the not bases?[/quote

Hey Whaley, so far all the IF's are rescue models and I've cobbled together heaps of different bases to use them with that's all

Eggroll wrote:Damn nerdy! 230 pages of models now...I really need to step up my game. IF guys look good, looks like you got a good scheme and process down. Now time to start up a big army!

EGGY! yes mate, 230 pages I know right! it's a lot thanks for the props on the IF's they will certainly end up as a big army but still nowhere near your level of collection

Thanks Cam, the yellow is inspired again from the Space Marine novel where they describe it as Mustard or Pus yellow, it's still bright but a bit deeper.

Cool compositions there! If the Champ's chest is an issue, and these are 40k rather than 30k marines, I'd just whack a purity seal or two over the offending area. I can't think of anything that would remove the glue without destroying the resin as well.

Nice minis! The finished yellow is great. Beautiful job on him. Yea id agree with Para, you could probably cover up the offending areas with SM bricabrak, it might err on this side of overly busy though, but maybe not too....you could also try and paint it as some kind of battle damage? Maybe some like bright green plasma melting...could be a nice chance for a spot color...but i think ultimately the fastest way to fix is to cover it up;

I'd probably have at it with a knife and make it battle damage.

Or paint his face pale and pasty and then paint the glue area as vomit.

One of those two options is not serious.

I actually tried nail polish remover very carefully then washed the model and it's not perfect but better than before so I'm happy to have a go with it. I was going to paint the chest eagles red like the troops but I might go with black/silver to camouflage any imperfections. I've done a little more on the Sallies dreadnoughts but haven't time to upload yet i'm struggling whether I need to keep layering to get more depth to the colour or if it will be fine once the other colours and details get added and I can shade some more ink in the recesses?

These models are awesome, cant wait to see what you do to them. Sorry to hear about the superglue, if it was a regular marine is would say who cares?! But with the detail and your skills, I can just hope you got most of it.

I have a fine cast Libby that has really bad flash on his face..theres nothing I can do. it's also one reason I haven't worked on my grey knights, don't get discouraged like me lol

Bit extreme maybe, but could try soaking in Dettol for couple days. I have left models soaking for days and it it has broken down super glue and green stuff. Careful work with a sharp pair of tweezers and pop. It is what I would try.

Thanks for the advice and help guys with the glue issue! it's not that bad now so once I get the rest of the bits for the Apothecary i'll hit them up with some primer and see how they look

but for now I have a finished model to show you all, one of Whaley's Sallies, the contemptor dreadnought, I was a little unsure about whether i'd done enough green and gold washing to get the depth I wanted so the only way to see was to actually continue and finish a model to see how it looks all together I'm happy with the way he looks, I think it's a good point to get them done in a timely manner while maintaining a decent tabletop standard of paint that still should turn a head or two ( Whaley to confirm )

So do you think this level across the entire army would look good? any little touches I can/should do?

Boy Damo, your technique really looks phenomenal with the gold on the green. Really love it. I'd caution a light touch with the gold rather than too heavy. You don't want to lose the green in all that gold.

Kinda an accident when laying some lighter colour down to shade it but it reminded me of another way i'd seen the hammer done so I went for it

whalemusic360 wrote:Looking good! The scale details really come through well. Is that something you are going to replicate throughout?

Thanks dude, if you want me to do some throughout then sure! I mean they're yours after all I should have added a few lighter accents to the scales as the darker parts blend in too much, still looks good though.

Thanks Gits, it's a funny technique where you think you're going ott but it ends up o.k I find pure gold on the edges gives the impression without covering to much!
