right, but he did 1 layer of grey and added a white edge highlight. thats not "working your way up to white" - thats just "forget about white, just paint them grey"

I'm pumped for these. I find these painting tutorials very useful and am excited they're doing a new one everyday! Never would have thought to start painting white with grey - but then I am relatively inexperienced in painting - so I found this first video useful. A quick, easy technique I'm sure I'll find a use for later.
That's more or less how I paint white; Ulthuan Grey is a great color to highlight up. Actually painting models straight up white means you don't get to highlight at all, and Ulthuan Grey is close enough. Personally I like using a blue wash instead of a brown one, but that's a perfectly functional tutorial to get a good looking white.
Who's this? Where's the manchildboy we're used to?!!!!
Really glad they're doing this wee tuts in the run up to Christmas - do hope they throw in some ....more advanced stuff too though. Anyone here send in an e-mail with suggestions?
I sent one asking them to show some alternative skin recipes for Orks. I painted loads of boys up using the current video tutorial for Ork skin but I've come to really loathe the colour Warboss Green or whatever it's called.
I specifically asked for a darker more menacing skin tone that could be used for some battle-hardened, grizzled Nobs.
Januine wrote: Who's this? Where's the manchildboy we're used to?!!!!
Probably taking the week off after filming that 90-minute Archaon video! I'm glad to see another friendly face doing a painting tutorial for Warhammer TV though; with two painters filming, perhaps we can expect to see more frequent painting tutorials even after the Advent calendar?
Automatically Appended Next Post: I wouldn't hold my breath for more advanced techniques to be featured in these tutorials though. I don't think the Citadel system lends itself to advanced techniques - it's just "basecoat, shade, highlight" then move on to the next color. These videos seem more about showing you which Citadel paints to use and where/how to apply them to achieve results similar to the studio models.
I, for one, am totally okay with that I like using the Citadel paints and following the studio color schemes, and since I don't have a collection of old White Dwarf magazines, these Youtube videos are the best source for tutorials for me.
A pretty poor guide really, the armour looks grey in the end, not white. Need a lot more contrast with more than just a few token white edge highlights.

A girl that likes to paint miniatures? I wonder if she's married...
Seriously, both of these tutorials are very good for what they are. They are aimed at beginners, and so they keep the paint jobs from being overwhelmingly complex. I'm reminded of the KISS principle of engineering: Keep It Simple, Stupid! Good advice for many budding painters out there.
Not sure why GW does that to be honest. I got that from the WNT post on GW NZ. I've already had to edit the link for the white power armour video cause they fiddled with it.
Yeah - I've had the same problem. Don't show up on YouTube after video 3 and if I watch through here - just a black screen. Can watch them on my ipad though
They have them unlisted initially for some reason. They seem to make them listed from anywhere between when they go up on the UKGW news feed or sometime the day after.
There are exceptions, though. The 2nd one I believe never was unlisted.

Perfectly true. Though the bit about the ink on the sleeves for the red robes was interesting and not something I'd thought of doing. Should help when I paint my 2nd Balthasar model or a Watcher.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Day 10: Pale flesh tone using a witch elf as the example with Duncan Rhodes
Loving these tutorials so far! The day 10 one will be useful for when I do my Chaos Cultists, as I planned to make their skin very pale (like they've been living at the bottom of a hive city). I may use Pallid Wych Flesh instead of Kislev Flesh, as it will make them look more pale than that elf that Duncan did, but otherwise I will probably use the same technique.
The lava base thing seems very difficult, but you can't argue results! Not something I'm likely to ever do, but it is cool.
A nice series of videos so far, bar the grey "white" scars. Good to see them covering some techniques such as blending.
My only pet peeve is the fact they always water down the base paints. The whole point of that range is the base paints can be applied straight from the pot and they are thick enough to cover any other colour. Watering them down just turns them into a layer paint, so why not just use a layer paint?

Becuase 1) GW paint is really thick, which is nice because 2) watering down makes the paint smoother when you apply it, and it makes the pot in general last longer since your using less paint per layer.
I thought the FW scheme (which I was really hoping that would be) was done with an airbrush, two toning the silver first then two layers of a clear blue then a clear green over that from above.
Emma seems cool but when I watch the videos it feels like she is trying to do a Duncan impression with her mannerisms and intonation. I thought the benefit of having two different presenters would be two different presentation styles. Still she seems like a great painter just like Duncan. I would like a bit more individual flair, is all.
Day 13- Dark Skin tone with Emma- interesting that she used Druchii Violet to shade with. Wouldn't have have even considered it myself but it does look pretty nice!..
Day 14: Yellow power armour with Emma ie Imperial Fists
Also- I don't know about anyone else here but I thought the yellow armour tutorial was pretty nice! Add some weathering to it and that's a pretty nice scheme!

Agreed, but what about the red bits? How do we paint them?
Matthew wrote: You know what? Emma is annoying. What's that hand thing she's always doing?
Ha, I think Duncan's annoying tbh.
Not very impressed with the yellow or the dark flesh tone video - I guess I was hoping for more =/ I know you can do a lot of different dark flesh tones, but the one they picked (using Dryad) just seemed lifeless.

I think with an additional layer colour, those two would pop pretty nicely. Emma does mention that you could take it further with the IF one and use (I think it was) White Scar. The main purpose of these tutorials is Keep-It-Simple-Stupid.

Good point, I keep forgetting that quite honestly and hoping for more.
Maybe it's just that they are giving her the crappy topics but I've found Emma's tutorials aren't as impressive. A few that Duncan has done I've actually learned a cool new trick (painting on top of Martian Earth, or the lahmia medium+dawnstone for stubble) whereas Emma's are always just 'heres an armour colour scheme...." and some of the schemes don't look particularly good at the end (looking at you, alpha legion).
It really does feel like Emma is getting the gak end of the stick... painting Black Templars... black power armour again??!! Appreciated that it's a different tone, but still.
angelofvengeance wrote: It really does feel like Emma is getting the gak end of the stick... painting Black Templars... black power armour again??!! Appreciated that it's a different tone, but still.
I feel like this tutorial is kind of pointless, its just highlighting black which is simple enough to do.
I don't see why everyone is so negative about Emma. Yes, she has a bizarre hand motion tic, so what? A chick that knows how to paint miniatures and is enthusiastic about it is pretty cool in my book. It doesn't hurt that she's reasonably attractive (at least to me).
I think the problem is that they stick her with the less-than-spectacular painting tutorials and let Duncan do the really cool stuff. Many on this thread have already said this, but I thought I would chime in as well.

Spoiler:
I wonder if she's single...
Her being a woman is irrelevant. If I want to look at women on the internet I'm not coming to a warhammer painting tutorial. She could be male, female, or anything in between, makes no difference.
I just hope that her tutorials are bland because they give her bad topics, and not that they give her bad topics because her tutorials are bland.
woman or not - couldnt give a monkeys barring the fact that it's nice to see more women being into hobby and on the frontline. There are, as we all well know, a lot of female artists who who whip my and all of ours painting butt with a brushstroke. I would just like to see them being featured more. folk how have a sudden and (imho) ridiculous reaction to women being in the hobby..well...that's they're problem and I really have, as I'm pretty suremost of here are of the same opinion, no time for their purile nonsense. respect the paint not the gender.....if that makes sense.....does in my head......
I can see why women have no interest in this community
Easy, easy! It was meant to be a joke! I should have known I would get flamed for saying anything about Emma being a woman. Although, you have to admit there are FAR more men than women involved in all aspects of this hobby. So that is why I like it when I see a woman involved in it. I'd be thrilled to death if a woman showed up to play in a 40k tournament at my FLGS, but I would not immediately start hitting on her or anything juvenile like that, as that would probably run her off. I like to think I'm not that shallow. Still, the gender discussion is best left for another time, so let's just continue enjoying these tutorials, shall we?

I'll put it this way, there are more women on Dakka than most people know about.
On one hand Dakka is a great equaliser. On the other, it isn't because there's a blanket assumption everyone here has one hand on a paintbrush, so to speak.
Very grateful for the stubble tutorial, back on topic. Been looking for something like that for a while.
Mmm as with most of these tutorials, the checks and dags vid is a good starting point but I was left feeling a little underwhelmed. A couple of optional extra stages surely wouldn't've hurt. As is, I think Emma's end result looks nice and neat but very flat.

Again- keep it simple stupid.. it's the basic concept that they're addressing, not the full shebang.

How 3D do checks and dags realistically get though?
Liking the base tutorial! I don't use the gray texture, but I'm sure I can use similar methods for mine. I currently use Blackfire Earth (which has now been discontinued unfortunately ), Agrax Earthshade for the shading, and Terminatus Stone for the drybrush part. I should probably make use of the little rocks I got with the Badlands basing kit like he did, it does look better than just a flat base.
The marble tutorial is awesome! Think he is a bit too liberal with the strippling of the snow over the rocks and skulls. Almost no point in painting them in the first place.
Bottle wrote: The marble tutorial is awesome! Think he is a bit too liberal with the strippling of the snow over the rocks and skulls. Almost no point in painting them in the first place.
Yeah I thought that too, but I suppose it is more realistic, and if you didn't basecoat them properly it would probably show (and there would be bugger all you could do about it).
I really wish no-one had pointed out Emma's hand movement, I can't see anything else now :/
That's a fantastic one. Very useful.
I think it's probably nerves, I'm pretty sure I've met the lass at the larger open days when they have all the staff they can grab on the tills, and she was quite a quiet lady. That or they have other very quiet ladies. It's all good, everyone is super polite.
Quite like this one, except the chip part - just didn't look right to me, but maybe it's just the size. The scratches look great the way she describes/does it tho.
Yeah I am sure she is a sweetheart but I am glad I am not the only one who can't see anything but her hand gesture during her vids. It's a lot more distracting that I thought when I first saw it. Her paint skills are not in question and I understand these are instructional and need to be short and to the point. I just wish she did not parrot what Duncan says, wish she had her own thing so it does not appear as if they just wanted to show diversity of the hobby or something like that. Not sure how else you say "spin your brush to get a good sharp tip on it" either though. All of these are great fun and the short time frame is great for helping people learn to do something. Really enjoy these all and all.

I know what you mean, those scratches are great, going to add some soon(tm)
They're stuck between keeping a consistent and easily followed channel, getting 25 vids out in a month, and allowing people to shine. I'm sure over time it'll allow her to become herself, if indeed it's something either of them want to pursue.
Honestly I listen to the instruction and look at the mini, it could be presented by bugs bunny and I'd get the gist of it.
as long as her hand's rock steady when she paints, as it is, I really don't care about what motions she makes before hand. I think one thing that is a bit much about these is if you watch a bunch in one go - just about anything can get annoying. Like the whole spiel about getting a point on your brush. lol but I'm a bit impatient and just want them to get to the point (no pun intended).
Nice job getting all the vids together and up here AoV. Really been enjoying this advent series they've been doing. Some good stuff in here that folk of all levels can take away
Also note that they appear to have pointed the camera at Emma at a slightly different angle so you don't see her arm waggling about as much in the Kabalite video.

They should do a "40 days of tutorials" for Lent haha
