Figured to start with my newest WIP - Necron Warriors for my son's Necron army (& 4 Swarms)

Base coated, bases done (magnetised & put a washer on the bottom, so they can all fit in a cookie tin I happen to have available).

he has requested blue =D

If I can figure out how to fit it in, likely I'll do the little bits blue. I'll post a couple versions I think, get opinions before I do the whole lot. I have a couple blue paints I want to try out as well, one is an actual metallic blue from Reaper I really liked the look of, have to see how it looks in use though.

These are three of the colour schemes I've come up with (the blue is a metallic blue paint)

the first is just basic blue washes - not sure the colours come out in the pic :(
the second is (blurry!) blue on the gun and the chest piece only, no wash
the third is quite a lot more blue, the chest piece, the shoulders, helmet, and bits between major limb areas

Which one do you like? Or what combo would you like better? I'm thinking of going with the last one, except I don't quite like the helmet as it's so dark

Post by: TP^DC Deputy Manager

The blue washes are a nightmare to photograph and I'm sorry to say that I can't really make out the blue in the two other pics.

That said, I'd definitely vote blue gun pipe because the it makes some sense that the energy is flowing through three from the blue crystal. Blue eyes are a must. Blue shoulders and silver head would make a good scheme. I worry the joins between body parts may not come off. Have you thought about making up some templates or masking off sections of limb parts to colour in blue? Could work as an identification means between warriors? Other than that you could try painting the ribs blue, but it would make a lot of blue on the torso.

I've just realised that I've probably thrown up more confusion, sorry! :(

hah no, it's np - it's really really hard to show the colours in a pic, I'm not sure why >< Too subtle I guess. I did throw it in a lightbox with three lights but meh.

Anyway, some variation on #3 might be good, the more I look at it the more I dislike the all blue head as well >< Anyway, back to work Worse case, I can repaint them and if my #3 son is really into them, like I'm hoping, I'll undoubtedly be doing more soon! These are for his birthday at the end of the week so I really need to get moving lol

Awesome Doomscythe!!! The blue looks so good contrasted against the black. That's one of the reasons I went for blue too. Also I was fed up of being conformist!!!

Thanks guys!

Should have close to final pics up later today - like *right* before I give it to my son lmao. I'm supposed to be done now >< almost, just waiting on some washes to dry to do final highlights on metals. Thinking about the edge highlighting on the black panels. Not sure if I should just go for the lighter blue or put an undercoat of the darker and then the lighter. Might have to test first.

I got the last black layer on the panels, which muted the blue glowy a bit down, but I think it still looks good. Since I couldn't get my airbrush to cooperate anymore I did them by hand <ouch> thankfully it's not that large of a vehicle. It looks ok I think, but needs must and all that. Sigh.

Almost done with the guns, and I'm going to wait on the final gun or portal to see which he really wants. Knowing him tho, it'll be the BIG GUN lol

Top two/three boxes are empty. Then we have Manufactorum, Balewind Throne thingy, and Garden of Morr. IoB set behind all those.

Reaper stuff for some figures I'm attempting to make for my RP group in a couple campaigns we're doing. I expect to hopefully have these ready for Christmas presents this coming December.

bunch of my reaper minis - bones on the right, mostly giant, orc, goblins and familiars.

most of my old school and other metal minis for my Skaven army, censor bearers, named characters on left; bits and a ton of giant rats in the rubbermaid containers on left.

bunch of stuff for my son's VC army, more Skaven stuff (Thanquol is up there somewhere, the new Stormvermin), Skitarii and a few more terrain pieces, like the promethian pipes and the GW trees. Couple of random boxes I got in trades and some empties as well, mostly full tho. Malifaux Gremlins and Arcanists are tucked into the left corner.

just another view of the corner

80 plague monks - give or take, a pack of Stormvermin primed, another Hellpit, Hexwraiths on hold atm (working on OSL), and my box o shame, random miniatures I haven't yet done much with, that aren't GW or for one of my RPG things (yet). Plus a box of warmachine bits (Bell, WLC, etc) under the plague monks.

Now to see what we can get done this year!! ^_^

I like the colouring on the Doomscythe. I have an Eldar Falcon done in a similar way, except with yellow, orange, red instead of shades of blue.

That is an epic amount of models you have. Are they all to be painted????

I Paint This... And That @ 2016/02/15 00:11:06

Post by: Guildenstern

@Fifty - thanks! I almost was going to do a red but my son requested the blue heh

@TC^DC - umm <looks shifty-eyed> that is the plan <cough> we'll see how it goes! On a plus side as I always say, I have plenty incase of the Zombie Apocalypse - no fear of running out anytime soon!

I've been working on putting my BaC box together (our LGS is having a contest but dunno if I'll make it by the end of the month!) - I'm trying to come up with a colour scheme for Luna Wolves that I like. I am *not* doing a white, I hate white. So I'm going to go like really light grey with maybe white highlights, that's probably the best I'll be able to manage honestly.

Couple WIP shots from this w/e:

Spoiler:

Some of the black bits are going to be metals, not stay black, like the weapons. I just don't like to use leadbelcher over white (which was what I primed with) maybe because I've done Skaven and primed black so long, I really prefer darker primers usually.

I also had a bit of a flow aid accident with my paint so yeah, even messier basecoating than I usually do lol

I Paint This... And That @ 2016/02/15 06:13:22

Post by: TP^DC Deputy Manager

Looking good so far. Like how many contrast points you have there. The black/Leadbelcher areas compliment the grey well

I feel you on white primers, unless my model is going to be white or ethereal I prefer black primer as the white can show too easy if you miss even the tiniest spot. Also great job on the Luna Wolves so far! The not white is looking very smooth.

Thanks all! it's going really slowly atm sigh

Anyway, here is my prototype, if you will, for my paint scheme. (In a bad phone pic, sorry)

I'm liking it so far in its not whiteness hah Still need to do weapons, some edge highlighting and I think it'll be pretty much done. I haven't decided on weathering as of yet.

Yeah I'd rather paint than do my house work >< really supposed to be cleaning right now but anyway, I decided Mr Dread need more work. I just love this model!

So of course I decided that's not enough - I want to do white edge highlighting in a few places, grey on the black. I plan to weather the exhaust pipes on his back with "soot" later. Also looking for ideas about his ribbon? (I mean the thing that looks like a ribbon on his chest, I dunno what to call it) I've been considering doing it with silver, or gold. Gold to match the brass, silver to match my theme though... and what to 'write' on it? I was thinking legion mottos, like Lupercal but I'm not really sure. I don't have a lot of (any) reference material for space marines so help is appreciated!

Ayup, son's ghostark

he's wanting a kind of brushed gold look to it, so I started with a balthasar gold base, black with blue trim and I'm going to probably drybrush a layer of Vallejo Old Gold over it (my fave gold colour tbh). Started a test piece in the above pic.

It's meant to look a lot more like an Amarran ship - for any who've played Eve Online - and for those who haven't here's a ref pic of my little punisher frigate:

Post by: Guildenstern

mine as well actually :( I'm hoping the black bits with blue will help pull it off... I guess we'll see. Playboy really likes it so that's good (it's his army).

I'm thinking about the death immortals he wants done as well, having more bronze plates (to set them apart more plus match), with the same bases as the other necron warriors (from earlier). Not sure if that'll work or just look strange. I may have to just go for it with one and see how it turns out.

Just for fun, he came by my desk while I was painting and started commenting how the necron warriors I was drybrushing to go inside the ghostark, needed to have different coloured wires leading to their chest piece, which should be glowing... I gave him the mommy stare and was like, "Do you want to paint these?!" he quickly departed

I Paint This... And That @ 2016/04/30 14:12:04

Post by: TP^DC Deputy Manager

Lol. Hilarious. My children are just a bit too little for that to be in any way effective, I can't wait til the "daddy stare" has full effect

Your idea with the Inmortals will be very effective. Shame the ship is already black otherwise you could have done that bronze too to signify that "big" (size and status) has those colours. As you say, carefully introduce it elsewhere and it will all fit together in the end I expect.

Thank you! am quite pleased it's finished that's for sure! Hopefully my son will get to use it this sunday in his first game - we're still not 100% on the rules so we're just bringing everything completed plus a couple HQ proxies til his birthday order comes in (Necron Get started box)

Also we have a unique (sort of) solution to the whole issue with his nightscythe/flyer being black and blue... I'm buying more lol well I will. Eventually (probably Christmas). His younger brother (my #3) is quite enamored of ships, as well, and I'm half-way hoping I can talk him into actually playing (he also likes Necrons, in case it's not obvious... so he's keeping the black one for now.)

Need to work on a colour scheme for #2's Deathmarks, which I just finished putting together. I'm thinking mostly black with the copper/bronze highlights - he wants them stealthy, but at the same time they need something to help tie them together with the main army theme. [I'm horribly tempted to paint them with Cylon eyes though...]

Other current projects: a Luna Wolves Rhino, which I'm doing a little converting on; 5 more Luna Wolves; 10 Giant Rats (out of my Skaven Stash of 69); finishing my Portal Terrain of course, erm... yeah so lots going on. I'm a take pics in the morning when the lights better.

yall be grateful! toddlers are CUTE... I have teenagers now... ugh lol Pros: they can play with me Cons: they tend to not understand the value of money and not in a cute way like toddlers!

Still there's always grandkids, but hopefully not too soon lol

I'm very tempted to make this a trukk - got orks on the brain now! Was going by one of our major streets and yet another military truck for sale by the wafflehouse (they all park them there...) Anyway, I could see welding some plates on that bad boy... Funny because my kids got home after being out with dad and were like, "mom! we saw your truck!" lol cuz they all know I love big trucks

Anyway, overall plan for the rhino at this stage is as a kinda prop for my luna wolves diorama/base. I'll probably magnetise it so it'll come off easily, or just set it on the base, but I want it to look eventually like it's come in, landed some troops, and is fixing to take off. Idea eventually is to get all my guys weathered up and put on a diorama base like they just landed on Isstvan III. Smaller than a normal game board of course, something I'll be able to hopefully store and if I do end up getting time to take up 30k, use.

I'm going to do a bit of damage on the rhino, since I already marred it a bit, I'm not as worried now. But most of the weathering will be done after I think. I want to do the whole army at the same time so it's more consistent.

I can't bring myself to pay the money for Flayed Ones, but they are cool. I'm trying to work out if I can mod some Warriors with some GS work. A bit of GS skin and BFTBG and it could be a far more cost-effective way of doing it. The GW sculpts are beautiful though and I am very jealous.

And the gunner/driver dude are still pretty much sitting in just their primer coat yet. Otherwise he's coming along well I think! I added a few of brass etching bits, still working out how to paint some of them.

took a bit of a break and finished off a model I really want to throw in my Gremlin crew, Burt Jensen. Plus, he's a really cool, fun model anyway:

lol yeah I'm prolly getting Wong's box and Merris next. Still need to paint my pigapult and piglets!

I think Gremlins' 'motto' is Leeroy Jeeeeeeeenkins! Burt fits very well lmao

I have been thinking, I'm going to improve his base, since I put him on a very basic one only atm - I'm going to add all the discarded shells I can, and maybe some 'live' ammo - wish I could sculpt! I'd love to give him a bandolier of shells (especially since that gun apparently doesn't really have a way of loading!)

Automatically Appended Next Post:
This is what I came up with, to try to make a Loken for my Luna Wolves. He's made out of the named character dude from the BaC box, and spare parts from it as well. Most of the conversion was removing the head, making room for the replacement, giving him a sword instead of his whatever it was, and a bolter in his opposite hand, also instead of the previous weapon.

I'm not currently thrilled with the neck, but not sure what to do about it. I took off this big grill/cover part that would have covered up the facial features, but also hid where the neck joined into the model. So, yeah, dunno.

Thanks TP^DC! I'm fairly excited, hoping to start an actual board up - only had it planned over a year now <rolls eyes>

Got my kits built, tho I've not taken a picture of the skull tower thingy as it's buried on my desk atm (cuz I got bored waiting for the terrain pieces to dry and started building an ork trukk:

I really have model ADHD):

And I did a bit of work on my Loken conversion - added a collar to hide the neck join. It may not be fluffy at all, but it's about the extent of my GS skills, and hopefully will look good when painted.

Did some more work on my Magewrath Throne (aka now to be known as "Skullz")

^^ the base ala pink insulation foam, great stuff

^^ how it looks initially with the skullz on it; also painted the base brown after using gesso to prime it, not very exciting shot tho lol

And here's the start of my son's Frostgrave terrain/diorama/display base for his warband:

^^ it's going to be a ruined Library, I've yet to make the books, bookcases etc.

And here's my first attempt at making flock, quite pleased with how it came out, there's a bit of uncoloured sawdust still in it, but not too bad:

I am working on making vegetation (vines) for my terrain atm, but I realized I'd also forgotten to post the pics of the minis I think I'm doing for the Wyrd IP (to go with the Frostgrave Terrain above, and my son's warband).

So 'ere they are ^_^

arms are actually on now, figures are primed... just really need to get paint on 'em.

They are Darksword miniatures, by the by, from their anthropomorphic collection. Great service from them, very quick! Also excellent sculpts and not very much flash/mold lines.

First time I've tried to do trees ... not totally happy with them, but they are starting to look better (will get pic up, of current state, when flocking is dry)

Also did a test fit so to speak of stuff for my son's Frostgrave terrain/display board and his warband, it's based on a ruined library:

working on the base for my Manufactorum now! The kit itself is complete but I want to add a modular sort of base. The main piece will have a crater, inside the back building, the edge of the whole pink foam will be beveled down to make the Manufactorum stand on a hill of sorts. The front piece of the manufactorum, which isn't attached, will be able to be removed from the base, either for access or to give us more terrain options.

My son's Triarch ^^ (and it's driving me nuts it has the improper number of legs but oh well)

Started hubby's Perdita crew last night ^^ omg such little parts, so glad my tiny tiny drills came in, already lost an arm off perdita just taking this shot!

^^ Not really looking forward to putting Nino together lol Still, I'm consoling myself that it's not more gremlins!!

Did this up really quickly, don't like the blue. I'm going to repaint it in green I think, which will go better with the gold I think. First time I used rub n buff on the top bit, was interesting.

Aaaaaand per usual I may have gone a bit overboard...

spent last night constructing 11 more boyz from ebay bits and spare parts, plus a few gretchin and some nobz from leftover bits of a box of the new ironjawz. Got some pretty good mileage from that box tbh even tho it was expensive. Also, I have a couple of weirdly shaped legs I got from some bitz exchange, they look like they'd make good riders, so I may try to make a couple more bikes to add to my 3 ebay purchases.

Scraped more paint off my ork trukk bitz and chucked them back into the simple green to try to get the rest off. Someone took "red paint" a little too seriously and had an ungodly amount of red paint and super glue on these. Tooth brush be damned I'm about to get a wire brush ><

I've found those kind of things to be hit and miss. I have a few; one is rubbish (may be a duff pot as it doesn't seem to dry properly and makes no difference when buffed), one is ok, and one is brilliant. All Humbrol. *shrugs*

Best results come from a really smooth basecoat, smooth application of the paint, being patient to leave it long enough that you don't rub it off, and then a good buffing.

Yeah... patience... haha oh dear, that was a fun time indeed, although at least it does come off your hands eventually, I really should have worn gloves, I'm notoriously bad about getting paint/glue/stuff all over me.

Any advice on sealing btw? I usually use a liquitex matte varnish but I'm wondering if it'll take any of the rub n buff off, if I get it wet?

Also, I forgot to post these:

^^ It's painted anyway, but I can't help looking at it and wanting to add stuff to it, so I think I'll be putting moss on the rocks and a few other things likely.

Also, painted. But I'm adding a base to it, to make a crater, and allow me to keep one of the pieces of the building on the base, while still removing the other, in case we want to set it up differently. Plus, rubble. It needs rubble.

Otherwise, I'm just working on basecoating my orks, hubby's Guild stuff for Malifaux and probably a half dozen other projects so I don't get bored lol

As is often said; "Don't wear anything while painting, that you don't mind getting paint on"

Any advice on sealing btw? I usually use a liquitex matte varnish but I'm wondering if it'll take any of the rub n buff off, if I get it wet?
It will depend on the type of paint you are using. I've found with my Humbrol Metalcote paints (the rub'n'buff type) can be removed easily if I try and brush a varnish over them. The solvent in my paints/varnish will dissolve the Metalcote, even once as dry as they will ever get.

However, you shouldn't have a problem if either your rub'n'buff or varnish is water-based:
Acrylics tend to cure to a point that they can't be re-solvated and/or a water-based varnish is not going to dissolve a solvent-based rub'n'buff.

However, the varnish will affect the finish (as they do to any paint), and not just as a matt vs. gloss, they will darken them slightly.

Spraying on the varnish is probably the best bet anyway.
Although, it can also be argued that leaving the rub'n'buff paint unsealed is best. So long as it's thick enough and tough enough to not be worn off completely, it's only going to get shiner the more "wear" it gets. thereby looking even more realistic.

Sorry lost this thread a bit! I get quite sidetracked easily, as is probably readily apparent.

Those trees are the Citadel Wood kit - which I believe they've now called something slightly different due to the new tree stuff in AoS Sylvanth? I can't spell it sorry!

I really wanted to do each leaf invidually but realized that wasn't feasible, for one thing, and for another, autumn leaves don't tend to be a single colour anyway! So I decided to base a dark green or brown and then use yellow, a more rusty red (it's a vallejo colour red leather I think) and try to keep them random. I just kind of held the end of the paint brush and bopped the top of the foliage with it, to help it stay random lol Although I did do a few places deliberately as well to break up accidental patterns. Because humans love their patterns, even unconsciously. And I overlapped the colours a bit as well, as like I said most autumn leaves have more than one colour. Obviously not all of them, which is why I left a lot the green/brown as well.

From a distance it looks really good, which is pretty much the range of the picture I think. Up close it starts to break down, but that's par for the course really.

also @Dr H - I kind of like that idea of leaving the rub n buff to become more shiny as it's handled. I actually think I will do that! At least so long and until it's looking too shiny or whatever, but that could take a good long time. It isn't in an area you really handle a lot I think.

Couple more shots of projects in motion:

And, "Bob" my new HPA - really really love this model, it's just so grotesque and horrific it's cute!! He's going to be an (AoS) friend for Pretty Boy, my other HPA.

Automatically Appended Next Post:

Forgot my hubby's Perdita crew (Malifaux, Guild faction) - they're basecoated, eyes aren't done or any fine details, colours are going to be purple and green, with some black and highlighting up to a good bit lighter lilac and light green eventually. Which may take a really long time as we're actually using the models for a game currently lol

Thanks I'm trying! Got a child heading off to college after this year, likely, and since I hate playing with unpainted plastic trying to get both our forces done so we can enjoy what time we have before Life happens.

Got the first boys done, including bases - going for a seashore theme, to fit with the pirate idea. It came out ok, I think. A couple things I wish had gone better. I only had one base leak its watereffects so that was good at least. I wish GW didn't use beveled bases, it would make the whole taping it up thing a lot easier. Going to try to add a few extra bits for stuff like the Nobz (driftwood maybe etc).

not great pictures, sadly, I will take better when I finish him up. He's almost done, just a few clean ups etc. This is a test of a colour scheme for a chess set I'm working on for a friend. I decided to finish him off, and my Reaper FB mini contest entry (which I can't post pics of atm due to anonymity of the contest). Got my workdesk cleaned up so I could try to really get back into my languishing terrain entry for the latest Terrain Comp! @EDC - Dis Meny ^^

Well, I'm trying for a minimum of 3 but maybe as many as 5 total atm.

And now I'm trying to decide how to do the colours as well. I want some of the panels to have random colours, as orks wont to do. I'm thinking as of this moment of putting some chipping fluid on top of those, paint them up, and then chip/weather them that way. I quite like how Jan's metal idea came out with these guys tbh.

@thanks for the encouragement guys! makes me feel almost brave trying some of this new stuff (to me) out lol

Thanks guys! I like how bright the orange came out. I'm kind of surprised it's not a colour I use a lot, like at all heh

Anyway I did some decals on them, first time. Thanks to forumites here for helping me get the instructions straightened out. They came out ok I think. Couple spots got messed up but not too bad, overall.

I still need to finish the pilots off and a couple details. I don't actually have bases for these guys. not sure if it's really necessary. I kind of like them sitting on the ground like this tbh.

Anyway, linked cuz pics a bit large: Clicky meh

I'm just trying to finish weathering etc. I did go ahead and paint the rockets different colours/patterns. They came out ok I think. It was a fun experiment that's for sure!

So trying to work on a couple large metal beasties - one's going well, the other not so well.

Jabberwock is going ok:

Imrik's dragon is not :( While I was trying to get the wing that's now off reinforced, its neck fell off >< arrrgh. I'm going to trim the wing join I think so it's more flush with the body, then redrill another hole for a pin, and then GS the hell out of the whole thing. And hopefully that'll work. Sigh.

And while I had the GS out I started messing about with hats for my Orks, trying to do some piratey style hats. I did one with a eyepatch, one with a skullcap and two with tricorne hats (although one turned out rattier than the other).

Thank you very much!

Putting up a couple finished pics, which I'd forgotten:

Sir ForScale (Garrick the Bold, Reaper bones, finished picture)

And my finished Deffkoptaz:

Little minor piece, really, that I'm worked on terrain wise this weekend:

Post by: Guildenstern

Took a bit of a break after the deffkoptas while waiting for glue to fully cure on my metal monstrosities.

I did some work on my Trukk conversion -- which has really become a battlewagon now lol

Added a turret for the gun, on top of the trukk on a rack, added some sides to hang the armour onto, I'm working on the cab and the tailgate as well. Slowly adding many rivets and other doodads.

Deff Kopters are looking ace, I really like what you've done with the rockets.

Nice work on the free stuff hats, suitably pirate-y.

Nice work on the battle wagon, I like the idea that it started as a Trukk then you just channelled Gork (or Mork) and it became a battlewagon.

Thanks EDC!

It's slow progress I know but it's becoming a lot like my terrain projects - where they tend to literally grow well beyond the simple little thing I was starting with lol "Oh what if I just added *one* more thing?!" hah

Anyway! back from vacation - went ok. Only ok, had some family issues, not to bore anyone, but anyways I'm back and yay! finally starting some painting again omg. I've been away from my painting desk so long! Almost 4 weeks.

Spending too much time catching up on the interwebs and seeing all the juicy new stuff GWs etc come out with - argh. They're killing me! I just started reading "A Thousand Sons", slowly getting all the Horus Heresy novels I can - and boom, Burning of Prospero 30k board game! Swwwwwweeeeeet!

So hobby progress:

1. broke an airbrush
2. got spare working
3. primed a ton of stuffs!

Win

Got this stuff in while I was gone from a trade on Wyrd FB group (a wyrd place, great bunch of peeps):

Got a bunch of stuff built and ready for priming, including a dakkajet:

Also snagged a couple Deathrunners from GW's Silver Tower box set to use as Gutter Runners! I'm liking the idea of using them in AoS vs. my 8th Ed army because I already have a ton of metal gutter runners, and this way they look quite different as well as already having the round base thing.

Also a little actual paint slapped on my Jabberwock model from Reaper:

Thought I'd already posted this but guess I'd forgotten, anyways, this is a swamp or marsh board I've been planning for over 2 years I think now. I finally got the gumption to actually start making it.

I used some pink insulation 2x2 sheets to start:

There's going to be a small mountain or hill over there on the right, between the boards. I'm considering leaving it off so I can also play with it in a different area, but havent' decided yet.

This is a view of the left side, where I'm having the terrain be higher, but still flat enough to put armies (or other terrain pieces) on. It's going to have some forest, but likely not very "thick" really, compared to what you'd expect.

This is after all the sanding etc I did to help give it some more character and blend it in a bit. Those extra pieces in the center are going to be modular islands, that I can move around in the swamp.

I just got some paint on this today, as it wasn't very humid in GA for once. It's mostly on the land areas. A lot of washes are going to go over top as well, so it's just a basecoat really.

And my current state: waiting for glue to dry. Well, watered down PVA. I've added a lot of the rocks/sand etc. I didn't want to add too much, because I'd like to focus on it being a more water environment but I felt like not having any was just very boring and not as realistic. Plants will be coming up shortly as well. I still have quite a lot I want to make for it as well.

Welcome back! Sorry to hear that your vacation was only okay.

Also suck that you broke an airbrush, but some you clawed it back by getting a spare working and a load of priming by the sound of it.

The army shot of the orks looks rad, many dudes to paint!

Thanks

I'm getting excited about the horde, I promised myself the forgeworld biker boss if I get the rest of the boyz done lol

Also, did the wash for my board (can't wait to see my armies on it!)

Just a basic black/burnt umber craft paint, but it already is giving it a lot of depth etc.

It's probably going to take quite a bit more time on the next couple of stages as it's mostly making the plants and getting ready to add the water effects.

Thanks guys Having a lot of fun with this

Here's last few progress pics.

^^ Getting the swamp water painted on. I am going to use water effects, and tint the water which will mute the brightness of the yellows in this.

^^ Just a quick pic of it with the modular hills I'm making to use in it

Finally got flocking on!! I used a couple of greens of fine turf.

Got some static grass on the modular hills - haven't decided if I like it yet. It's not as dark as I'd hoped (it's still drying in this pic tho so it'll take a bit longer to see true colour). I also washed the 'dirt road' and haven't yet DB'd it. I got the plants on and started adding little tufts here and there. I want to keep it realistic but at the same time make it easy to play on (without crushing grass tufts during play etc).

Sorry I missed your question!

Yup it is meant to be. It's really paint though I did a few layers of dark green going up to lighter green, dabbing it on so it came out mixed a bit. It helps give it some depth when the water is applied I find, as well as show as if it's moss on the top a bit. A little primitive but the other method is throwing some flock in on the top, which works I've seen it, I've just not tried it. I'm going to try and give it a go on a smaller project here soon I hope though

We get areas out here in GA that look like this:

http://www.forgottenplanet.com/guildenstern/SwampTreesGA.jpg

which I think would be really cool to try to model. And yes, that's water ^_^ I've another pic somewhere of the gators in that swamp too lol

Anyway, thank you all for the kind words!

I've been busy the last bit, playing on the new board lol so I've not gotten as much done as I usually do, or been around on the boards quite as much.

I did finish these guys up tho, for my #3 son, so maybe he'll deign to give us a game later this week (he's unfortunately discovered girls so not as much into Warhammer as he was )

He's a very colourful chap indeed. Good work.

Nice rank&file.
Is the banner getting some freehand in the future?

I prefer the brown background for them in particular.
It's always worth trying out every possible background for each miniature though. I've had some surprises in the past as to what has worked best.

Thanks Dr H. Yup! I'm gonna do some freehand on the banner when I can get it together. At this point I just wanted to get them to where my son could use them lol. My other son is into different scripts and is working on some Elvish for me (too bad I can't get him to paint it on the banner )

I need to pick up some more foam for backgrounds! I think you're right it's surprising how they change the pic. I used a black on on this next bit because I couldn't find the others at the time lol Go figure.

Anyway finished Mr. Skittles finally! This is officially the biggest model I've every painted - in metal, of course. I've done a few Hellpits.

Mr Skittles. Okay, I smiled at that. Thanks.

For eyes that are that large-- like Mr S's -- I've found that a thin application of glazing compound gives them a nice sheen without being glossy. Makes them look a bit more realistic.

The board looks too good for gaming. Very nice work.

Thanks! I think it needs a touch more weathering but we'll see. I tried a couple new things, which I kinda almost liked... the spattering of red paint for blood, that worked ok, once I figured out how much water to use to get it to actually splatter, instead of drip or stick to the brush. The other thing was scratches with paint to represent places where the metal wore... I didn't like that as much :(

Anyway! next... well I do have 6 bikers sitting on my desk calling to me but first I need to do more Boyz

More immediately I'm going to work on finishing my son's Mortis Engine.

They're a bit further along now, but that's the base coat and wash. I wanted to do some thing a little different on them so I am messing with the green/purple combo and one is more an albino, or light flesh coloured one.

Also these guys got put together a bit ago:

Thanks!

I mainly use Forge world but I do have some from Secret weapon miniatures - both work really well!

I did two things in this case, to get it to look like that:

first thing, was add isopropyl (sp) to a small amount of weathering powder. It makes a wash that dries quickly (as the alcohol evaporates) but leaves behind a more powdery effect than say a technical paint.

You can do this successively till you get the effect you want.

The second thing I did to get the really really really dirty look, was just using a dry brush, dip it into the weathering powder and carefully 'paint' it on - you'll likely also be kind of tapping it on, it's more a stippling motion than a true painting motion. The brush is just to carry the powder.

Again you can do this again and again til you get the look you want.

I don't recommend doing it a LOT for a model that's for gaming - you have to carefully seal those and it can come off. It'd be more for display. Depending on how much you put on of course.

To seal all that in, as best I could, I used secret weapon miniatures pigment fixer. It's basically just mineral spirits, so you can buy it directly if you like, I got it in a set of theirs and quite like it.

I should note, some pigment loss is simply inevitable that stuff is *FINE*. Also, wear a mask, did I mention it was fine? Unless you want to experiment with interesting colours coming out your nose

Also, I've not used them but MIG makes some great weathering stuff from what I understand.

And thank you, Cam, as well

Just did another set of Munitorum crates

They're really a cool set! I've started some light weathering on them, but it doesn't show up very well in pics. I am tempted to get another set just to play with heavy weathering as well. Plus they're just great terrain!

Thanks guys! hoping to get a game in this weekend as well, depending on boy's schedule

I found the base! And I'm working on my SMs for the monthly dakka contest, and a reaper fig for a partner exchange...

But now I'm trying to decide what ot do for myself:

More grots?
More boyz?

I need both, and I've been falling behind a bit tbh, getting distracted by other armies and my terrain lol

Automatically Appended Next Post:
WIP on my reaper exchange mini - it's a conversion of Alastriel, based on my partner's wishes. She had a sword in her left hand first, but it's supposed to be a wand/mace type thing. So I cut it off a good bit, turned the hand and made the wand with a snake on it (yes, that's supposed to be a snake)

Did a set of these for our Terrain needs, we're pretty lacking in actual non-fantasy stuffs (though these will work for that as well). Lovely little kit, but the rivets are a bit tedious

Rivets ! Tedious! I beg your pardon!

Very nice work they look beautiful. You could try scratching some extra bits together for the set, for the next round of the comp

Nice work on the pole dancer, she looks great, great colour work.

Snickers! yeah, I like making rivets... painting, not so much.

And it was hilarious about the comp actually. Just in time!

I got my hubby and sons together for the first time ever, to help me in my hobbying: they ate three canisters of Pringles so I could have the tubes. It was a tough job but they did it well. lmao

And I'm working on a bit of Necron Terrain, to match my son's necrons:

The crystals are from Horizon 3D on ebay (fairly cheap 3d printed terrain bits); the cover stuffs is coffee grounds, sand and various rocks; the base is a piece from a sewing kit.

Here's the almost done stage, with the dark purple/blue wash applied to areas, a couple layers of blue paint and a lot of watered down PVA. Most of the time for this project is waiting for the glue to dry. I've done two rounds of it, to make sure the material lays down to paint well, and it's taken overnight each time, so it's best to do this sort of project whilst working on other things. Which is how I do most of my terrain, really.

Anyway, next stage is going to be a light blue/white drybrush to make it pop, and match my son's bases.

**edit** oh I meant to mention, I am using Student grade acrylic paints (the kind that come in sets for painting pictures). I do most of my terrain in it, or craft acrylics, including washes. So hopefully the colours will match up ok with how I did my son's bases. I'm kind of estimating here.

Just a quick update, just got back from a trip so no time for hobbying. Plus I picked up a stupid summer cold >< grr. Anyway, Iron Hands begins! I've not decided on a base theme yet, I've already done the whole broken urban thing for my Luna Wolves so I want something different. I may go more like a starship theme, I've not decided.

Took the guide from Sperian on MWG on how to convert a deffkopta to a bike and came up with this beast: (head and wheel are from Kromlech, head's just tacked on atm so it looks funny)

Need to let GS dry so I can sand it, fill more gaps prolly, remove moldlines I"ve missed etc etc. But it won't get any paint til after I finish my son's Terrorgheist.

thanks! I'm really liking the look of the conversion. And if you guys haven't ever checked it out, you really really should take a look at Sperians WIP thread on MWG, he has the most awesome stuffs!

Also, just starting in on this guy for my son - he wants it to be red (wings) with black, necrotic flesh. I have no idea how to pull that off. I swear my son loves giving me challenges!

Forgot:

finished the scatter terrain for my son's Necron themed table (still on the drawing board)

I Paint This... And That @ 2017/04/03 21:10:21

Post by: Camkierhi

All great stuff, the ork bike is brilliant.

As a suggestion for the flesh, maybe try working the opposite way around to normal but a pale grey to a mostly black "highlight", could add a little green in the grey end. Just an idea.

Post by: Guildenstern

Oooh that sounds interesting...

I dunno wtf I'm doing atm (evinced by messing with airbrush first pass, first time) \

Also re: bases for my Iron Hands - I'm thinking I may use window screen to make sections of "grating" and cover it by either plasticard strips or some sprue, or both, wth lots o rivets etc. Kinda to go with the starship flooring theme

I Paint This... And That @ 2017/04/10 17:43:27

Post by: Guildenstern

So here's the original base I made from a spare rectangular one (so I could get different sides/orientations and make different bases). I used window screening for the grid, some sprue and greensstuff. As well as quite a few bits of cut up styrene rod (for the rivets)

This was one of the first attempts I did to make molds, but the milliput didn't give me quite the detail I wanted

So, I tried some Greenstuff instead, which worked better but was quite a lot of it, so probably not really economical for a huge bunch.

I'm going to be getting more Milliput (since I ran out) to make the actual bases from, using the above like stamps and see how it works out.

I also tried doing some resin casting with a mold, but that's quite tricky. I found I was getting a whole lot of bubbles in the end result so I need to set up a better vibration table (instead of just banging on a board with sponges like I do with plaster)

I Paint This... And That @ 2017/04/10 19:10:01

Post by: Camkierhi

Excellent work those bases look really great.

On the casting you could try using talc as a flow agent/mould release, I use baby talc and get excellent results.

Also why not use plaster, its a base after all, does not need to be flexible and if you use dental plaster it will be plenty tough enough.

I Paint This... And That @ 2017/04/10 21:41:46

Post by: Dr H

If you are looking at making moulds like this often (or even not that often), have a look for Oyumaru (also known as instant mold, but cheaper). I have declared my love for that stuff on numerous occasions.

It's reusable silicone mould material. All you need is hot water. GS / milliput won't stick to it with a little water. It captures really fine details (like fingerprints kind of fine detail). And it's reusable. It can be cut with a knife (for smaller moulds or to modify moulds). It can be stuck together (after cutting or to make larger moulds).

For this kind of thing, it's perfect.

Nice work though.
Gems and dragon-thing are good too.

thanks Dr H & Cam - some really good points, I'm trying a lot of things. Curiousity atm is mainly why, though I have used plaster before (lots of hirst arts stuffs). I've been reading up on about how many good impressions each material can do. I'll tell you too I have a lot more respect for people who work in resin etc!

Anyway, my latest projects on that front are waiting more materials (I ran out lol) so I'll keep you all updated =D

I did do some shots of my other projects WIP (not very good lighting atm tho)

First is my deffkopta warbike conversion - almost done painting, just need to finish base and fix it to it.

Then I chose some minis off my shelf o shame (they've been carrying my warlord's litter for forever, least I could do is paint them!):

I also went up to one of the FLGS semi-near my house Saturday with Playboy (my #2 son) and picked up a canoptek spyder for him and an Ork Mek for me (since GW is *always* out). I was very very tempted to pick up a new trukk, but decided to wait. I may get a Gorkanaut for my birthday anyway. Trukk 2 - has been chipped, needs crew finished and a bit of weathering powder on wheels
Trukk 1 - needs weathering (I didn't use chipping fluid on it, going to use painted dents and powders as I'm curious as to differences in look from other style of weathering)

Great job on the trucks. Nice and grubby.

Something you can try on that axe is to add some fine white lines down the centre of those light blue lines and maybe some spreading out from those lines. May give it more intensity and electro-looking. Is a good start.

Welp, I'm back from vacation

my #2 son and I drove from GA to WA to visit my sister (and also to see a lot of the states, kinda a graduation present to him). He got to see a lot of his relatives on the west coast that we'd not seen since we moved to the east coast, so it was all cool.

I also got a lot of lovely reference pictures for my terrain etc (as well as the usual vacation ones).

And, more on point for these forums, this is what was waiting for me when I got back home (Except a LOT of Malifaux guild models I bought from Dez, which are still unpainted sadly as they arrived just about before I had to leave)

Did a good bit more work on the Ork Mek really than the Tankbustas (painting) as he's meant to be more of a character. I really really need to get a lot more of my boys painted up so that'll probably be my next project.

Thanks Captain! Feels very good to have them finally done. Though technically I have 15 more to paint, to bring my wanted two groups up to 30 each (at 45 right now)

Anyway here's my latest boyz in all their seaweed strewn splendour!

Learned a lot doing these bases, I should note. They're supposed to be seaweed... and I think it kinda works. Hopefully next iteration will be even better! To make them, I used tie wraps, twisted them up, primed them and painted them green. I also used a bit of water effects in places to make it look 'wet'.

To make the polyps I dotted water effects on a piece of wax paper*, waited for them to dry, then painted nurgles rot technical paint over top of that. Once all that was dry, I stuck them to various places on my 'seaweed' using the water effects again to 'glue' them down.

*one exception - one of the times I dropped water effects on the seaweed, I got a great bubble effect that didn't pop. I didn't even realize til I'd come back to check and it was dry! So I painted that with nurgles rot, like I'd done the flatter spheres I'd made on wax paper. Now if I can figure out how to do that on purpose, I think I'll really be on to something!!

Things I plan to do better next time: use thinner tie wraps, get nylon thread (like fishing line) to use to make the droplets for the polyps. It takes a lot more time and is finicky, so I didn't do it this go around, but I think even just a few orbs made this way would make the polyps look even better. I'll also probably twist up the tie wraps a good bit more. In bulk, as I laid them out over all the bases, they looked pretty good, but when I had to cut them up to actually fit on the bases, it made it look not quite so good. Anyway, thus we learn!

Hehe yeah, I understand that. I may extend the use of the seaweed a bit here, since I'm doing a diorama based on an undersea scene (soon TM) - maybe I'll be able to pick up some more ideas as well.

I'm really supposed to be working on the aforementioned diorama... and my BRUTAL entry for our dakka monthly painting but now that I have the ork boyz pretty much done, I'm very distracted by this guy. His name's Bubba.

He's so cool. I'm actually sad the building time is over. I love building the big kits, like the trukks and such.

I really want another for a Morkanaut too lol but that'll definitely have to wait til I get more actual work done on my orks, play a few games etc.

I'll probably be slowing down a bit here soon, going to Washington in September.

But in the mean time, progress!!

We had a miraculously low humidity day ('only' 59%) so I took a chance and sprayed Bubba with leadbelcher. It did really well, though I was fairly conservative about spraying, as any build up out here, tends to leave "fuzzy"s on the paint job.

Then I started the rust effect (aka burnt sienna paint sponged onto the leadbelcher):

I'm currently waiting for the chipping fluid to dry, so I can start his basecoat.

Nice rusty base, love the furries from earlier, got a soft spot for the rodents myself.

Ohh, nicely done! This kinda makes me want to dig out some of my old ork army (which contains more meks than actual boyz...) and repaint some of them.

@Cam - thanks!
@EmberlordofFire8 - Dooooooeeeeeeiiittttt
@TerrainWalker - thanks! Thank the lord it seemingly went well thus far.

On to progress sadly these are from phone pix so keep in mind lol

one of best images:

Here Bubba is in (most) of his basecoat. It's quite thin so you'll see the rust through it. It's a side effect of the chipping fluid as well. I have to really let the first coat dry well when basecoating over chipping fluid because of course the water activates the chipping effect! Or can, anyway. Plus I broke another airbrush needle and I'm painting with a hairy brush, so thinner coats helps me keep brushstrokes out (hopefully).

Another minor set back, third times the charm?

This is his claw arm obviously. I had trouble getting the plastic melt glue into all appropriate areas before it dried out (as this was a very long surface for it to work on). I do really like how you can melt edges together with it, but in some places it's hard to get right. This was one. I did the best I could and where I haven't been successful I tried first to use the glue by itself in the cracks but it wasn't quite working. Then I did the superglue fill method, but ended up with still a few places with gaps. Not a technique I've mastered. I'm out of contour fill so I ran down the FLGS and picked up some liquid GS. That was a pain because it had solid layer of GS on top, and after prying it off, mixing some water in, I finally got it to be actually "liquid"y. Thanks GW.

Anyway TL;DR - gaps were eventually filled. Mostly. Still need to sand etc and repaint and see how successful I was this time.

And on a final note - remember the whole K.I.S.S. thing we all learned about in Kindergarten or thereabouts?

I'm probably throwing that out the window because nothing says, let's make it more complicated than deciding, hey! LED lights would look cool here! Maybe.

lol

So yeah, I'm planning on getting some LEDs and figuring out how to maybe backlight the head of the Gorkanaut, hopefully not so as to make it really really overshadowing, just you know, visible back there. And maybe the lower area too. Not sure yet. We'll see.

Good start, and like the LED idea.

thanks Dr H!

sadly I won't be able to work on him much longer for a bit, heading to my sisters for a couple weeks. So he'll have to get done in October but the kit should hopefully be here by then too.

Anyway, just about forgot to update this with my new MANz unit (Kromlech Juggernaut) - only have 1 in progress atm, the other 2 are just primed. I was dithering about what weapons to give them til I got my xenos book but finally just decided to go for it and worry about it later. Planning on buying more MANz anyway - I do like the GW version too, I just wanted some variety and Kromlech orks are awesomesauce.

This guy is a bit further along than he is in this picture, I'm currently working on pinwashes and edgehighlighting as the contrast isn't as bright as I liked it in areas. Even with highlighting, which just seems to be blending in.

@TerrainWalker - thanks =D I have two more to do, but I think I will be finishing the Gorkanaut first

While I wait for the LED kit to come in I've just been working on some edge highlights on the Gorkanaut, and my Kraken for Reaper forums diorama contest

Working out a colour scheme atm - I'm thinking I like it so far. It's not a very solid basecoat atm at all. I may play with some of the ghost tints I think as well. I'm thinking about doing the backs of the tentacles in purple as well

Spoiler:

Still finding moldlines sigh. Bit of a curse with bones - and some of these are in awkward spots on this particular model

I didn't like the warbuggies that much that came in the kit, so I started converting with some bits I had. Can't recall what back end is from, front is from a Gorkanaut, most other bits either original warbuggy kit or from a deffkopta (or plasticard, obviously)

Made another buggy (Or warbike, depends)

Waiting for bits to dry on my warbuggies, GS and what not. Also still haven't gotten Bubba's LED kit in yet, so I'm working on my Kraken Diorama for Reaper's forum contest again.

I got the seafloor base done, messed with layout a bit, and a couple bits of terrain done for the floor itself. My aquarium plants are all ready to go as soon as I get the critters that are going to inhabit the diorama painted, so I can figure out what I want to put where and what'll look good. Then back to painting the Kraken itself. Urge to shout 'release the Kraken' is growing however!

and a close up of the Dead Men's Treasure reaper piece:

It's a lovely little piece, definitely worth picking up. Lots of detail! (This is just basecoated atm, I'm still finishing it off)

@Dr.H - thanks =D Board's coming along, got more aquarium plants to put it in it later

I'm working on my Orks atm (mostly waiting for LED kit for Gorkanaut at present), my Wyrd Iron painter entry, and my Reaper diorama - and I got my #2 son's DE starter army box coming Monday. So he's pretty thrilled. He's going to do them himself tho I am going to help where needed.

Anyway so a few bits n bobs to update this thread, so to speak:

Random munitions crate

^^ scorpion I painted up, meaning to use for Iron Painter, but I don't htink it's going to fit now

The Kraken for the diorama I'm doing for Reaper forums (it's a bones model, a huge beast!)

^^ and some of the friends that are going in this diorama later

You really are producing some amazing minis, this is like visiting Ramos's thread, never know what you will get.

Great work on the sea beasties, they are wonderful.

The ork buggies are a pure delight for me, brilliant work.

I just finished my Iron Painter entry for round 2 - lotta good stuff this time (as usual) so we'll see. Anyway, at least I finished which is really my goal

Also Bubba's LEDs came in!!! So I'm looking forward to putting them in, and finishing him up!
