Very sorry to hear this =/. This thread might actually get more views in Dakka Discussions so we can move it there if you like.

Do you have pics of any of the models? This list covers much of 40k and since it's not specific would be really hard to spot... if you have pics folks can keep an eye out for them if the thief tries to eBay them / etc!

Another update: I believe we have tracked down. The GOBSHITE that stole my stuff, he tried to sell my dwarfs (I lost so much I still don't know everything he took) and my nib tamiya panzer iv ausf g and puma, cash converters called me and I've passed on my crime number and informed the police, they are now looking into it.

Will update when I know more, again, thank you all for your support.

Just to echo what everybody else has said - Really sorry to hear about this, would be my absolute worst nightmare but to lose something with sentimantal significance is far worse.

I really hope you get your stuff back and the guy gets caught.

I'm guessing you're based in the Norwich area and have contacted the local clubs etc just in case?

I used to live in Norwich and still have one or two gaming contacts up there so will put the word out on Face Book just in case.

Good luck.

Horrible Situation that I do hope comes to a satisfying closure. Stories like these make me glad I record all my stuff for insurance purposes. Pictures of every squad to cut down on pictures of them all.(still very time consuming for over 500 models). and a description list of all that army includes. Name, model count, weapon loads, MSRP price based on what is included in a box. and Total model count and total and overall price. then upload them online. This is more for If my house gets broken into and computer is stolen too, that way its online and accessible from any PC. My isurance covers if anything happens to any property regardless of where it was stolen. Not all insurances cover that way. and I increased the amount covered by insurance up by 4000$ to cover the models alone.

Really hope you get your stuff back, I guess one of the big advantages of being in a niche hobby is that stolen items are much easier to identify and less easy to sell on.

I hope they catch and charge him but more importantly that you get your stuff back.

Fingers crossed you get most, if not all, of your models back! And that the thief gets locked up for a long time - here in the USA that amount of stolen property would be a much higher level of crime (a felony, versus a misdemeanor) with a much harsher sentence!

Sadly uk law doesn't work that way, unless they can prove he stole the items the worst he will get is handling stolen goods.

Sadly he'll be able to claim that a friend gave him them, he'll never have to say who this 'friend' is but if they cannot prove he was the one to steal them directly he'll be charged with handling stolen goods. Our legal system really is this messed up.

Another recent ploy that some people have been trying is to claim that they thought that they had the owners permission to take the goods, some juries believe them and let them off, or the judge gives them a reduced sentence as 'they didn't realise they were stealing'.

Hope the original poster gets all his stuff back, but to expect anything more than a slap on the wrist for the thief is just wishful thinking.

i have so many other questions

- police actually investigate such things? over in america they say they will look into it but really they don't give a gak

- people broke in and stole a niche sensitive item like models? I would almost certainly start pointing fingers at people i knew

sorry to hear about this though I once put a case under my car to go back inside real quick and came back to find it gone. It was dark so someone just saw me place something down and leave and so stole it because they could. could be a similar sittuation : /

I though his stuff was in a shed. id assume some one was after tools or something and felt like they had to take something to make things worth it.

though im not a criminal or anything.../shifty eye

But yeah in the muricas its honestly better to just get insurance and let them give you money to re try instead of getting back things stolen.

Asides from a very small town situation you basically cannot count on the police. not that its there fault or anything. tooo thinly spread.

I have a feeling people often steal models without knowing what they are. Locked up black cases just screams valuable.

Guys who break into sheds and try to fence property like that are usually rounders. He's probably a meth or heroin addict.

I can almost guarantee this guy is a low level property rat with previous convictions for break and enter, theft, and possess stolen property (or whatever the UK equivalent of those offences is).

UPDATE: so ladies and gents, after chasing up the police several times I finally got a reply, they have caught the suspect, almost 2 weeks after the tip off was given, they actually did something about it, the person has declined to comment and will likely get away with the crime due to the inept behavior of the officer in charge of the case, I've also been told it's very unlikely I will get any of my property back at this point.

Chain of events:

I received a tip.off that my stolen property was brought into cash converters.
I informed the police, they said they would send an officer immediately to look into it.
A week later I call to ask as to the progress as I have not received the update I was promised.
The officer on the phone informs me that A: nothing was done the week prior and B: the report was filed incorrectly, so can I tell them again.
I was then informed that I would be updated that night, they did indeed call me and told me they had been to cash converters and had a suspect, they would call me later in the week with more info.
2 weeks later, I am informed they basically won't get my property back, even though they have the subject in question, and that he will likely get away with it.

I am now waiting for the case to close, and then suing for mishandling of the case, right from the start it wasn't taken seriously and I have had several officers admit fault via telephone and email, had they acted upon the tip off when they claimed they were going to, the suspect would have been caught with the items on his person, giving the person 3+ weeks is not acceptable.

And there dakka, is the update.

Darn, that sucks. Depending on what the army's worth, I do hope that you succeed in sueing the police office and getting the money back; if you really want your models back, you'd be better of trying to get...more direct and less legal help, but that usually is more expensive than your army would be worth.

Alternatively, if the police keeps prolonging the whole thing, consider having a talk with the press. They often love stories like these as they engage readers and exploit the general desire of a "The state leaves us alone!" feeling.

Ah dude that sucks. Hopefully you can get some satisfaction in the end.

I had a similar problem with police not following things up, had an accident that wasn't my fault and the other driver did a runner on me, went to the police with the registration number of the vehicle, they said they'd follow it up and never did. Apparently the only thing Australian police are good for is operating speed cameras and mailing out fines for trivial traffic offences.

Thankfully I'm legally trained, so it will cost me almost nothing, a few strongly worded letters to the independent police complaints commission and I should be ok, this is such a clear cut case of mishandling of an investigation they will likely want it over and out the way ASAP.

Sad thing is the more I realize I lost, the higher the tag is going, entire dwarf army is gone, chaos warrior one too etc. It's just adding up and up.

How do you price hard to find or OOP items? If a sum is offered in compensation will you be be able to use something like completed eBay listings as benchmark?

I would imagine he should be able to. That's the current going price, and there is no real way to prove what was paid for it, only the price to replace it.

Formosa, that sucks man. Good luck, and hopefully the suit gets you full new armies. If you find your armies on eBay, make the cops buy them back for you; send them links and ensure they pay whatever the cost.

As someone who is very well trained in the legal field, yes, yes I can, this is a very clear cut case of not following procedure and breach of trust, both are grounds to sue for the lost property, as all I need to do is prove there is a "chance" I could have had my property returned to me, which is also clear cut, as phone recordings, cctv, witness are available for evidence.

If they "lol in my face" I then have grounds to further pursue the case with the ipcc.

If they had followed through on there promise to investigate when they claimed they would, I'd have said "fair enough" they tried, they didn't, they lied, they dragged there feet, and now they are liable.

I sympathise deeply but there is a difference between incompetence and your crime just being a low priority one. I'm sure you would rather see the police dealing with violent and sexual related crimes rather than pushing shed break ins to the top of the queue. The simple fact is that in the modern world public services have to perform triage. Pursuing legal action just takes resources away that could be spent on tomorrow's victim.

Besides your insurance will cover the financial value to buy them back anyway.

Yeah I wholeheartedly agree, however I'm not flailing looking for someone to blame, they have genuinely mishandled the case, and as they have already admitted fault, I have no recourse but to hold them responsible for the error, the way I see it is, if they get away with this, who else's case will be dealt with in an inept manner next time.

Better the police are held accountable for their errors with a 'trivial' case so that victims can have confidence in the force going forwards than having bad habits set in.

sorry to hear about this though I once put a case under my car to go back inside real quick and came back to find it gone. It was dark so someone just saw me place something down and leave and so stole it because they could. could be a similar sittuation : /

I have a feeling people often steal models without knowing what they are. Locked up black cases just screams valuable.

Hope you get your stuff back Formosa.

This is super true, I had a realy sketchy guy follow me once because of my warhammer case.

Latter I found out apparently he thought I was selling watches. Alot more carefully about were I walk with my cases now.

All the time spent assembling and painting. . .if someone stole my, admittedly, small collection of AoS Nurgle models the loss would be incalculable to me.

Y'know, this blows.

But when calculating the 'cost' of something like this, I don't think, is even really possible. I mean yeah, check retail values, ebay, etc for the price of the actual models...but the time and effort into collecting, building, and painting all of these is, as Coldhatred said, incalculable.

I say, sue for the monetary loss and then find out the personal information of the guy who stole them and arrange for him to fall down some very interesting, shoe shaped, stairs.

I've had some unfortunate somewhat related experience in this area too, and I found that police departments rapidly lost interest once they found out they were dealing with 'toy solider' theft, for whatever reason.

You could almost hear them smile and then mentally check out, even though 'value of goods' and 'theft' is all they should really need to hear and focus on.

Still, it sounds as if you've got a sound basis to move forward with them on, so good luck!

I would note, that thanks to the number of miniature painting studios that exist now, it is very easy to get price quotes from several of them, for the models that you lost and turn that in a proof of value for reimbursement of "time and materials invested" as well.

That entirely sucks. And there, ladies and gents, is why I have always made sure to have a few handy friends with the capacity to deal effectively with this sort of situation, because the rozzers don't care. I was badly beaten up as a young teen, the men who did it were known to the police, there were witnesses and yet, because they were in a local sports team, belonged to the right circles and wore the right ties, nothing was done. 'Lack of evidence' said the policeman who visited my hospital bed and spoke to my dad. My dad got them sorted though, properly. I learned the lesson.

I hope you sue them into the earth.

Probably a drug addict. They will steal anything not nailed down. I'm glad to see there is some recourse in your country when police drop the ball. I've had to explain to victims why I don't have a case to prosecute, and usually it's because a lazy cop didn't want to do his job properly. Thankfully that rarely happens due to a strict local police chief and sheriff who both do a good job.

It's very important to make clear the value of what's been stolen very early on. Petty theft is a lot easier for the police to brush off but often times when a collection of anything has been stolen it breaches the threshold and turns it into felony theft, where the police then have much more rigid procedures they have to follow. In my area someone had several binders of magic the gathering cards stolen from their car while they were unloading carrying things to and from their vehicle. The police just dismissed it until he explained the value; just one binder was his trading stock of Magic the Gathering Alpha cards and were worth well over $15k... The police conducted a week long sting operation recovered the property, caught the thief, and put him away in jail for 5 years. The thief thought they were Pokemon cards and worth a few bucks, so he pretty much confessed thinking he'd get a slap on the wrist since he cooperated.

UPDATE: Yeah, this is still going on.

The case has been closed without conviction sadly, the police are unable to recover any of the stolen goods, which is gut wrenching to say the least, we are now at an estimated £7000 worth of items taken from my shed, as I have continued to discover more and more that is missing (I own a garage that I also store items at).

But good news of a sort, the complaint has been put forward to the police, and they are not investigating it.
And strangest of all, GW PLC are not talking to me and seeing if they can help, I am quite surprised by this most of all to be honest, but I thank them and am truelly shocked that they would even consider offering any kind of aid, hats of to them and there amazing customer service team.

That's amazing. If you get a replacement for your loss, either through their offer, insurance, or out of your own pocket, I volunteer to paint one unit or character to help get you going again. I'll never win a golden daemon, but I can paint to a decent standard. It's a genuine and open offer (and no hard feelings if you'd rather not).

A (somewhat) happy ending to a very sad story. I'm very touched to see that GW cares enough about a customer to replace stolen miniatures as opposed to ones that were lost in shipping or damaged. Very good PR move on their part. While nothing can replace the sentimental value of the actual stuff that was taken, this should go a long way to easing that pain. Again, I'm very happy to see this end well.

That is really generous of GW (and FW). It is good to see the people side of the company in little acts of kindness like this.

Wow that is nice of them! Sadly I, too, have been viciously burgled. I can't believe they took all 6, I mean 7 Warlord Titans! Not to mention my complete Primarch collection!

Well a nice silver lining at the end. Very nice of GW and FW.

Formosa, how did GW get involved if you don't mind sharing? Did they contact you first?

I sit here in my painting area full of minis and just a thought of having some minis missing sends chills up and down my spine. I feel for your loss mate and I am really glad that GW had an employee that could feel for your loss too.

I am a part time commission painter and I will gladly paint a squad or two for you to help you make up the lost time mate. If you need my help just PM me.

Really glad on how this turned out and really good move on behalf of GW.

Thank you very much, I'm a good painter but I simply haven't the time these days I may take you up on that, just waiting for my dark angels upgrade sets to arrive and I'll give you a shout.

Once again dakka, thank you all for your support!

ok something else has happened now, when speaking to Lydia at Warhammer world I told her what I lost, I also mentioned that the only thing I really wanted back was the old screamer killer my brother gave me for my 5th birthday (yes ive been gaming since I was 5, 28 years this September), anyway long story short I went away on a short tour, came back to another package, a 2nd ed screamer killer, in original packaging, freshly moulded......

I'm not ashamed to say I blubbered like a little girl, games workshop and Lydia CAST ME A BRAND NEW SCREAMER KILLER, let that sink in people, this isn't just good customer service, its so far and beyond kindness I simply didn't know how to respond.

I'm without words right now.

Nice to hear about a good ending every now and then, and doubly so when it involves GW going above and beyond too!

Actually that's really cool and I'm jealous.. now I just wish I could get about 50 old metal hormagaunts.

Well, let me just add my commiserations for the theft, and my shock and amazement at the way GW has handled this. Lydia deserves a raise, or at the very least a bonus. That is some incredible work on their part, and well done to GW for going above and beyond to help you out and even to replace the Screamer Killer. Top notch and hats off!

Seems like there is a big silver lining after all though, congratulations!

One of the reasons why I stay with GW when I was oh so ready to quit them once and for all. Customer Service always seems to fix what I have wrong with their products.
