A while back, I started a job that lasted around 150 hours and over eighteen months to complete. So in the end I decided to use some of the payment on something physical. And so I indulged my long and distant romantic interest in a Reaver Titan.
She is going to be a functional gaming piece with diorama base.
Titan name: Caput Inter Nubila In more recent years renamed to the Caput Inter Nubila ("Head in the clouds"), this Titan was originally named Vindex Manus. Retired after centuries of punishing warfare, and then restored through several centuries more, by a dedicated band of Tech Priests, the Nubila is part of an Explorator team. They work diligently to reclaim both long-forsaken Imperial worlds, and the immeasurably valuable bounty of long-lost technology they may hold. The presence of a Titan is often all that's required to remind any inhabitants that they are indeed, loyal Imperial citizens. For those with an unfortunate or persistent lapse in memory, it is usually a very short reminder.
How does a Titan earn a second name? Upon finding themselves brought forward less frequently for frontline battle, and spending their years exploring these forgotten worlds, the Nubila’s Princeps and closely bonded machine spirit began to slowly change over time. An otherwise entirely reliable servant of the Emperor, much to the chagrin of her crew and dedicated techpriests, the Nubila has through these years, developed a curious habit of entering long periods of total meditation when left alone. During these times she refuses to respond to any and all issued commands.
The Nubila continues to perplex and mildly frustrate her crew, but as she is yet to perform any less than ferociously in battle itself, they have deemed ironing out her eccentricities more problematic than allowing them to develop. Bewildering them further however, are the occasional alerts from the sensor arrays during those periods of rest, which indicate her more than casual interest in tracking local wildlife.
The Explorators, determined that there must be a discernible meaning behind these readings, have tasked their novice engineseers with logging her discoveries. Unwittingly creating the Imperium's first and only field guide of Terran species long thought extinct.
To describe the scene: She will be standing amongst trees, with one foot resting upon a long abandoned Chimera. The ground will be full of banks and burrows, and along with the chimera and trees, will be home to many tiny creatures and wildlife.
One one side, her arm will be raised to "eye" level, and resting on an outstretched finger will be a kroothawk, it's wings fanned out like a butterfly to catch the sun.
If you were to pop the hatch, you'd see the crew are all watching (in mild frustration, perhaps) through the view screen as she indulges this curiosity.
The base will be custom cut acrylic, and layered in slices, so that at one end, a printed field guide to the critters living in her base can be slid out.
Because I've never done this before, this is part blog, part SOS topic, hence it being in P&M proper.
So let's start.
Part one was making sure I understood what everything was. As Forgeworld give you bag after bag of mixed parts, I laid it all out end to end, swore a lot, and eventually mapped out her body.
The legs are definitely going to be the hardest part.
Detail sheets, both cool and horrifying to contemplate.
And no titan is complete without weapons, so lets map one hand out.
And the other.
Part two was bagging that all away into halves, which was pretty satisfying.
With all my heart I wish you good luck. The hardest part is trying to take your time when such a big toy gets there and you want to do nothing more then tear it open and put it together. lol
Thanks guys. I'm going to photograph and label all the parts as I go along because the FW instructions are terrible.
While people may not agree with how I assemble or use her, the build I hope will be useful.
I was all Jack Skellington trying to get that spread done.
"What's this? What's this? What the everloving feth is that?"
In all seriousness I'll be following this along in earnest. Good luck, and as others have said: Take your time, enjoy the process, and don't rush through any part of it. It'll be all the more satisfying when you reach each milestone as you move toward completion.
My only rush will be trying to get the base size worked out by Thursday. If I don't, I won't get to do it for possibly a few weeks, as I'll be using scrap material from work.
Looking forward to seeing this take shape! Even if I could afford a Titan I'd have no place to put it and I would hardly, if ever, get to use it in games. So I just envy everyone else's.
bubber wrote: Make sure you don't snip off the pistons rams like I did....
I feel your pain. Snipped the supporting spokes off a Doomwheel to remove the central rat, and then realised that means no axel. That was a fun reconstruction.
This doesn't scare me as much as leave me frustrated as I haven't got a drill, magnets or brass around yet. This weekend is gonna be like a steampunk scavenger hunt.
Iechine wrote: I've oft' thought of doing one of these, this has helped me to decide not to.
Are the instructions really that terrible?
They're basically a B&W photograph of the parts for a section (already clipped so it's not intensely helpful) and then a picture of that part fully assembled.
It's not the worst I've had. But it's certainly not actual instructions either.
Ah I feel you, I just got a FW Vulture commission and the instructions are just two pages of a basically assembled model with arrows labeling the parts, sort of. If its anything like that, then WTF.

I get that they fixed their new stuff (A Ta'unar instruction book is a novel with color coordinated instructions and tips, its beautiful) but they should really go back and fix the stock they are still selling, especially something as huge (and expensive) as this.
Buttery Commissar wrote:It's pretty much that. The worst I've ever seen is the Tauros jeep.

I still have parts for that which I am unsure where they go.
If you really want to know, let me know which bits and I'll try to get a decent photo of mine. I assembled three and didn't have any bits left over.
Iechine wrote:I get that they fixed their new stuff (A Ta'unar instruction book is a novel with color coordinated instructions and tips, its beautiful) but they should really go back and fix the stock they are still selling, especially something as huge (and expensive) as this.
That's because the new stuff is all sculpted on a computer - the instructions are created using the same 3D image files (same with the instructions for all GW's kits nowadays). They can't really go back and replicate that with the physically-ssculpted models, unfortunately.
They could however photograph things from more than one angle, or in fact give pictures more than 2" across to demonstrate what part you're looking at...
Anyway, the hard part isn't the build, it's the prep, I reckon!
I don't know why you're all complaining about the old FW instructions, that's half the fun! It really encourages imaginative modelling solutions and sculpting skills, particularly when you realise that a bunch of what you thought were vents and sprue are actually critical details...
It's even better when they have instruction sheets that appear to have been through the photocopier 1,000 times; fuzzy pictures at a wonky angle are the best(!). *looking at you XV9*
I swear there's a video on youtube I watched that had a unpacking and etc instructions - can't find it now =/ but you might give it a search, Buttery, case you have better luck better than FW instructions anyway

I'll take a look.
Honestly, broken down its not too bad a job. The difficult part is finding tools. I fear drop impacts and bendy pinning.
Also magnets are fething expensive. I know you don't use a £1 tripod to hold a £600 camera, but I was quoted £69 for enough to do the arms.
whalemusic360 wrote: Welcome to club Titan. Which Legion are you going to go with?
I don't know anything about legions. The fluff I shared in the DCM good news topic is her backstory, she belongs to a group of Adeptus mechanicus Explorators.

That doesn't sound right the magnets.
just how big and many are you going?
edit: i always felt like if i ever got a titan id use big counter sunk magnets and probably some bolts to keep the thing together instead of just letting it free hold with the magnets alone. id bolt in the arms from the top of the shoulder and hide the bolt using the big pauldron would honestly never trust magnets for anything that big and resin
I'm a little confused by the topic move, truth be told. There are a lot of individual build discussions in P&M itself. Plus I had intended this to be a bit of a multi purpose (SOS and documenting Titan instructions) thing. Guess the title was entirely unclear about either of those things.

Yeah, moving it was wrong imo. Looks like P&M has earned the attention of a mod with an itchy trigger finger.
Wrote this on your building the impossible thread but, it gave me the necro message:
Spoiler:
"Buttery, how did this go? I am necroing because you linked to this from your titan plog. I'm not ashamed either, as I'm sure those subbed here would love to know if it was sold or finished. (For thread closure.)
Did the cat win? :C"
So yeah, I am posting this here lol so I don't get in trouble, I think only the OP can bump really without irritating people.
Anyways, how do you think your titan's base slide out will work? I'm kinda curious about that as I can sorta do the same thing to my dropship's base (it has a slot on one side due to the way the glue went, and I am thinking about adding a campaign sheet to it to describe why it is deployed, etc.
whalemusic360 wrote: That was at my suggestion. You are likely to get way more traffic in blog land, normal P&M is more a place for resources like base size and whatnot.
For instance Jan showed up.
No worries, I can always siphon out the parts that are useful to people and make a Titan resource topic when this is done, so folk don't have to read pages of "help!!! It's gone wonky."

And to answer KB, yep it's the same idea.
Buttery, I wish you luck, I am not much into new-age stuff but...
Spoiler:
I looked around: very little Google kung-fu would be needed, there are a fair number of assembly guides so it is looking good!
<edit>Ah, I looked back and it was you who put the lander together.
That was a labor of pity if I every saw one... well done.
Thanks!
The only reason I never saw the bird to completion, was I realised my painting limits, and I started doing some more work to get there. I will likely finish her shortly after this, or get a quote from a Manchester studio.
The canopy is still evading my abilities.
Eh, only thing to really warn about it dry-fitting. Holy Terra, if you think you're overdoing it on dry-fitting, you're about halfway there. The body is a considerable amount of weight once it's all assembled, so getting a good stance with all those pistons in play...yeah, dry fitting.
Yeah, I'm dry fitting the legs alone tomorrow, so that I may try and work out the base size. Got some 1/8" brass rod and some drill parts. Here's hoping.

Good luck, Emperor be with you, and one of these days I'll make the Great Pilgrimage out to WHW and challenge you to a Titanicus smackdown
Looking forward to lots of BC reports on the build! Really wanting to get a Warhound at some point but backlog needs to be addressed first. If I can shift enough by Oct, my wife has siad she'll buy me the body. Paint, paint......must paint faster!!!!
I haven't built a titan, but I've done other large FW models and I'll suggest this: if you think you've done enough pinning you've probably done 10% of it. You don't assemble big FW kits with glue, you assemble them with pins and use a bit of glue to keep the pins from sliding back out of their sockets. If you do your pinning right you should be able to glue a titan together with the kind of cheap white glue they give to small children and still have it work just fine.

Yeah, I'm thinking the glue should never be the thing taking the weight. I'm only using putties and epoxy because I was told superglue was too brittle and might tap apart if knocked. I wasn't too keen on using the two part glue.

That'd be awesome. My friends nearby have enough knights and big guns that it could be quite an event. Whw allow table bunching if you ask nicely.
There will be some joints where the glue will inevitably have to do some of the hard work - socketed joints on arms in the vertical are the usual culprits; as smooth metal pins offer less resistance to pulled or twisted forces so setting the whole socket is important.
A small tube of two part epoxy resin/glue is best for this - I've had some Araldite for nearly 20 years and its still going strong as you use very little. Its a bit messy what with having to mix it and it smells to high heaven but will hold most things instantly (important for heavy resin parts) and for a strong bond in a way the even gel superglues just don't.
I've found on occasion that it's easier to drill a pin hole through from the outside, then fill it over with Milliput than trying to drill from inside the cavity. It can also be done with the other piece in situ, so it all lines up properly.
My hate for FW kits not withstanding, I wish you luck Buttery, this truly sounds like a project, that when finished, will be one for the books.
Also, I read your other thread about the Aquila...if your cat gets anywhere near this titan you have the authorization from the High Lords to initiate Aqua-Bottle Exterminatus.

Buttery has known this for a long time. Way back when the Aquila was "sanctified," by the cat.

I dare say you could have the Tanith sniper 'sneaking' right out in the open on that base and 90% of people looking at the finished product won't even notice the sniper because of the ruddy-great Reaver Titan standing there.
Subscribed! Also, my condolences - I build a trio of Ordinatus engines recently and they were a joy to build, but they're tanks, which means that they're much easier to build. We should share our resin cast-offs and make an entire city of trapezoids.
They've got to be Citadel animals.
I want to one day take it to whw for a painty contest, and I don't want to get ruled out due to having third party kittens.
I'd be much obliged. I'm mostly looking for creatures that could pass for relatively natural.
Ollie shall explain what's been going on for the past week. At the moment I get home at 7pm and sleep at 12, so it's been a little slow, to say the least.
"It is important to exercise your Titan. Failure to provide sufficient stimulation and outdoor activity for your Titan may result in problematic behaviour, such as indoor missile discharge, static build up and cable nipping.
As you can see, for this purpose we have provided this Titan with a step to perform aerobic exercise.
The Mechanicum believe in recycling the gifts we are given, so in this case the step will be an old Chimera which has been retired from front line battle."
(I had to jimmy the back off this with a spoon, I'm pretty glad it worked. It's completely foxed by the previous owner's over enthusiastic application of glue and primer)
"Many creatures make their home in abandoned machinery. These giant rat- err- these veteran Fenrisian Wolves, have decided the chimera would make a fitting den for their no doubt irritatingly adorable babies.
These wolves are in fact Leman Russ's own companions, Freki and Geri. Quite how they ended up so far from Fenris is unclear."
(To be repainted)
It is also important to bathe your Titan in sudsy water because they enjoy the tickling sensation.
"That is not in the manual."
One leg...
Other leg and groin parts.
And lastly, here is the Kroothawk's beginnings. Kroothound head, Lizardmen mount body.
It needs a lot of quills fitting and the neck muscles reworking yet.
I'm surprised how well the Kroothawk fits the head. My planning ability is almost entirely on the fly, and quite often correct. But it surprises me still.
I'm going to build up spines down the back and shoulders, much like the hounds have. Blackjack, do you have any strong visions of how a Kroothawk looks?
I picture some feathers along the wings, but it wouldn't be coated in them, and perhaps some on the head/neck area as well. Spikes along the back are fitting as well. The skin itself would be leathery, like actual Kroot. As for colors, that could be any color of the rainbow, and more, as they are Kroot creatures.

I think I might put feathers in the tail "fan", but my sculpting is not up to doing them on the wings.
I was torn between this head and the screeching one, I think this is better balanced.
That would still be cool to see. And the head is a good fit, it makes it look like it's basking in the sun, and enjoying it's place as an apex predator in the wild.
i am massively intimidated by the sheer number of pieces that make up a titan. still, i suppose you could make it even harder by building a scenic base for it as well.
working on a titan myself, I can definitely say that ensuring to THOROUGHY clean off the releasing agent is mucho important. I have had so many painting issues for not being serious enough when I was cleaning it up!
Very little process but some significant steps.
Got the thighs built, which allowed me and a friend to pose and work on the base shape. All things going well, I should have the base on Tuesday.
If you're looking for GW birds, you can check out the Dark Eldar Razorwing Flock(temporarily out of stock unfortunately). Pretty expensive for 4 birds though.
I bow to your understanding of the Mechanicum, so now there's pressure!
I'm going to update the OP with her story, now the contest is over. You'll see why I didn't place.

All materials are fair as long as paint sticks to it...
<edit> ...as well as what glues you intend to use work on it.
I keep looking at the bits for that titan model and I keep wanting to reach for screws, forget glue, I have no trust in bonding to resin.
I want to get a long shaft drill bit and make a skeleton of rod for that monster... just to be sure.
I have this really bad OCD thing with models of only wanting to put them together once... no pieces falling off allowed.
The metal Vindicator after a hot day in the car sent me down this dark path.
Though resin in a hot car will ruin anyone's day (got a titan sized car fridge anywhere?).
I'm thinking about setting some glass cabochons against it, and running small tape LEDs under the felt I'm basing it all with.
Get some twinkly stuff going on.

Just remember - Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.

Back on the horse. (in the cockpit)?
Got the base to finish sanding and gluing. It's a weighty and ugly looking thing right now, but it'll make perfect sense once built up and primed.
Were you going to do a water feature on the base? I know you are planning a nature theme, but forget if you mentioned that.
If you were planning on doing a lake, you might want to get some paint in before you glue that base together. You could do some neat layered effects by painting little dashes of color for minnows swimming under the surface, but above the lake bed.
I don't think I'll be doing a water feature, with the Titan being so big, I'm wary of making things that could "blow" the scale. A lake looking like a puddle for example. I'll see how it goes with spacing.

Vanden, it's up to you. I appreciate any input, and if it weren't for the fact I want to enter it in painting competitions, I'd be asking folk to paint any bits they send in.
I may yet build a wildlife sanctuary and start a Dakka zoo.

I meant for glueing down sand/gravel if that is your plan.
It's not going to be flat.
I'm building banks of earth and woodland on there. So the pins grounded in 15mm of acrylic will also be working as rebar for the banks and scenery,
Okay, we're starting to get to the point where you can actually see my progress.
Today I've been working on the feet again and got them cleaned up, and the various clips placed.
Once the glue has dried... It's time to airbrush metals onto all the areas you don't see once it's assembled.
While that's drying, I'll be clamping and puttying the chimera to the base.
I can't get over all the details they put in areas you'll never see!
3/4 of this will be hidden under pistons and the shin guards.
I don't want to skimp, but damn that's a lot of effort for no reason.
I always liked that they put some much detail everywhere, if nothing else for stuf fto get giddy and happy with during the buiild even though a huge amount of it will never be seen on the finished product
The manufactorium issues forth much blessed offerings from the machine-god.
There was much rejoicing.
When combined with the ritual of "assembly" it shall please the machine god.
It is enough to know the fine works are there, some may be obscured from the visible eye but the faithful will believe it all good and just and the machine god will know all is right and shall give greater fire into the spirit of the machine.
Yeah, verily we live in incredible times to witness the beginnings of the birth of a god!
What is an airbrushing session, without the mandatory complete strip down and cleaning to solve the mystery issue...

( Hello there, I can't wait to see your take on this BC. )
Okay so. No more painting this week.
I use a dark black-blue under my silver metals instead of a black. I find it looks more oily and gives a truer steel.
I don't have enough, which I discovered after I started.
Thursday is my last day of employment, and I'm then going home to my parents for a few days. I'll come back with nothing but free time and a raging urge to get this done.
Started building the base. I used some 3mm rods sunk into it to anchor the chimera.
It's with genuine sadness that I have to say there will probably be no more Ollie captions or posts.
I left home for a week and he is missing. I have no idea if he was stolen, kittened, borrowed or just misplaced. I've searched for him around the house, and will try again today.
I'm really down, as he was a custom build.
He can only be somewhere here, but I've looked everywhere. Under furniture, in all my cases, despite knowing it's daft to... I don't use him for gaming because he's pointless with no servitors.
He will turn up, I just don't want to forget and give up. :/
The build on the base is going very well. I need some resin or real rocks, next. Pics when I return from getting enough paint to do both legs.
Well, in a bid to get this at the very least built by the 27th, I've gone at it with a saw and dremel tonight. Here's how much spare resin goes into just the body.
Lol. Hope be had a nice trip!! How goes the reaver?
The amount of excess resin from the gates etc is just nuts. If the pound drops just a little more - I'm warhounding!!
So, actual building has occurred. Don't do it the way I did it. You're meant to build the ankle covers and foot and shin then slide the toes on. Because my guy is doing a crazy dynamic step, I did it myyyyy way. And it's really hard.
Alright, I glued the feet and toes down, which means I couldn't put the pistons in without repeatedly removing the leg, placing the pieces back in, then testing it and gluing it. Four times.
Question, maybe you know the answer Buttery now that you're the proud owner of one: they list the model as being 40 CM tall, does this include the Apocalypse launcher on the carapace, or is that another few CM's on top?
If it's the FW site, then it doesn't include the pepper shaker.
Because you can use the Warhound arms as back weapons, they don't assume that's standard.
Buuuut the composition really emcourages you to squat the build. You can do totally straight legs without difficulty, so it's all about pose.
Buttery Commissar wrote: So, actual building has occurred. Don't do it the way I did it. You're meant to build the ankle covers and foot and shin then slide the toes on. Because my guy is doing a crazy dynamic step, I did it myyyyy way. And it's really hard.
I've only ever seen a Reaver with straight knees - is this pinned or is there a slot/groove it can stick to?
The knees are like smooth rollers with a groove in them, they can go to a certain angle and back again. Mine is as severe as you can go with the knee.. The hips also have a limitation to stop you making it so that you cannot fit the pistons. I had to push that limit very much.
The base hasn't shattered, I meant the cd would!
It's a long story as to why that base is actually six half pieces rather than three identical triangles.
The short of it is my friend cut the pieces at work where we made signs for a living. He used scrap so we were limited by size.
The hand is pinned but not glued. The engines are glued as a block, and pinned but not glued to the back yet.
I'm struggling to work out how the cabling will work at this angle. :(
You might have to custom make or extend the current cables. I would suggest green stuff world for their cable and tentacle roller, it is really top notch
Buttery Commissar wrote: These cables are as wide as a pencil though. Can you make those with a tool.
Just make a snake out of the green stuff and roll it with the two pieces of the roller gently so you don't squish it out and eventually you will make a cable
If you can get some copper or aluminum wire that will hold a bend you can wrap Green Stuff around it and bend it once it's cured if you don't make the bends too sharp.
You could also use actual cables. Grab some cat5, strip the outer casing so just the 8 inner cables are visible. Put some GS bands every so often to hold it together and glue the wires when you are set. You can add or remove as needed if it needs to be thicker or thinner.
cat5/e wires are 24 in american wire guages, which shakes out to .51mm
Given the join point raised earlier, how feasible do you think it would be to use an actual metal hinge? The hip/thigh joint looks like it could come open and be assembled around a mounting plate lodged in the lower leg- that correct?
How about extending the existing FW cables with exposed bundles of smaller smooth wires made from paperclips, brass rod or whatever thin materials you can find.
Seems to make sense for your project, as if the rubberised outer coating has perished or metal outer cable has rusted away over time.
Here's an awesome diagram that I spend ages on but I think it makes sense.....

I'm not sure I'm following you. I will take some photos of the knee for you when I'm back at the desk. Everything sits and grooves very smoothly and tightly together.

Ah, I get you!
In all honesty I'm not a fan of exposed cabling. I am not a fan of the cabling full stop! What enterprising enemy wouldn't just slice it off and kill your God machine?
That's a small shelf of my Digimon. It's all the original rookies and blobs in "Digi pal" beanie form, plus Hawkmon, Impmon and Terriermon.
The Pokemon are Entei, Mewtwo and Charizard "paki paki" plush which have a ball jointed skeleton inside. I never really wanted to collect them, but on s technical level they're very cool.
I also had an obscenely large Pokemon collection themed on Lucario (I sold it last year to pay rent), and another of Plusle and Minun (boxed up as I ran out of space), plus I have a Pikachu from every World's TCG event for the past 5 years, they amuse me greatly.
The shelf above the beanies is hand sculpted MLP statues, my black library limited editions, and a Canis Wolfborne.
You have no idea how much I want to pull out my PS1 and start playing Digimon Rumble Arena...You just hit me with nostalgia BC. Thank you so very much...
WHERE IS YOUR WAR GREYMON! ALL YOURS DIGIMONS BELONGS TO US!
I wouldn't actually half mind another thread which is just you showing off your plushies...Although Idoubt the MODS would allow it...

How about a thread in Geek Media or Dakka discussions of things we collect other than minis?
And she went out for a game today, I tacked on all the covers and plating with superglue.
The hips broke, and Pistons fell out, because too much weight was purely on the hip ball joint. I pinned it once home, through the pelvis into the joint about six times, and it's secure again.
She is freaking beautiful and shows a lot of leg!
From a distance the model looks very clean.
Humbling that you donate some pretty "dear" components for charity even though you have had some challenging financial moments.
Good to see this thread get going again.
I am still jobless, but I have my health.
Tommie is painting a Reaver Titan to auction for a child in his family with deadly cancer. I gave what I had, because I knew it was right. If you see it online, don't mention it was me.
