2016's "A Tale of Many Gamers Painting Challenge" MkII: July-December @ 2016/06/17 06:06:32

Post by: Azazelx

After what I think I can fairly say was the success of the previous “Tale of Gamers Painting Challenge” that I started in mid-January until June, I’m going to launch another one that will run from July to December.
The point, once again is to go beyond the usual "painting goals for 20xx" that many of us - including myself - typically and set up a voluntary painting challenge for a bunch of us to participate in.
The point being to help focus at least some of our efforts on projects that we want to finish. With that in mind, there's no "defined" project that we all work on like Zombies or Board Games or 40k armies. We'll each set our own goal.

Criteria:
The criteria is simple. We each choose a "thing" or perhaps a couple of things to work on that can last us for approximately 6 months of painting - from January to June. That thing could be:

A specific army for any "large" system.
i.e.: Space Marines, Ogres, Orcs/Orks/Orx/Orruks, Romans, Samurai, a fleet for Halo or Dystopian Wars - or even a fleet for X-Wing if you're repainting.

A warband/team for a smaller system. (and perhaps a backup since these often tend to cap out at 16-40 models)
i.e: SAGA Normans followed by Vikings. Bloodbowl Orcs followed by Elves. A Frostgrave or Mordheim Gang followed by a different gang or even a bunch of random encounter miniatures. (Ice Spiders and shizzle)

A bunch of stuff for a specific game.
i.e.: Deathwatch: Overkill, or The Dungeon Saga box (with or without expansions) or Space Hulk or Descent or Wrath of Ashardalon or "All the Zombies in Zombicide" or "the entire Box of Zombicide" or "all of the things I own for Zombicide" or even "anything I own relating even vaguely to zombies" or "My Warhammer Quest Silver Tower Box that I just picked up." – similarly, “D&D Monsters and PCs for my campaign.” Is just as valid as “The contents of Descent 2.0.”
It could even be scenery - If you're making, say, an urban or desert, etc table and have enough stuff to paint over 6 months in discrete and meaningful chunks.

Month to Month:

Each month, participants will complete a "unit" for their chosen army/game. Complete is the key word here. You might have a unit just missing it’s standard bearer and/or leader. Paint that one or two figures – it completes the unit – that counts! You might have a couple of random painted zombies sitting around and add a few more to make them into a legal unit for your game of choice – that counts!
You can nominate it at the start or procrastinate for 3 1/2 weeks and nominate it when you're showing your "finished" pictures. There’s no requirement to show “before” photos, because as stated – the point is to finish stuff. A model might have just needed the final touch-ups for 2 months or 2 years – if this challenge helps you get that sucker done, then it’s done it’s work.

A "unit" should be theoretically legal - or at least thematically close to it
- we don't care if your Devastator Squad has only three heavy weapons, or if a guy has melta-bombs for some reason, or if only half of the Lizardmen have 2-handed weapons.

A "unit" that is “rank and file” should be at least 3 models. No upper limit
- if you wanna do 60 goblins, we're not gonna hold you back! Then again, if 10 goblins or zombies is enough for you in a month, that's cool as well.

A "unit" for a boardgame is something that you decide makes thematic sense.
- 10 Zombicide runners? Sure. 6 Fatties? Sure. A trio of Ravenloft monsters? Sure.

A "unit" can be a hero model, or a hero model with his retinue, or a monster, or a war machine.
- Marneus Calgar with or without his little gang? Sure for both. Gob-Lobber? Sure. Dragon? Sure? Army Standard Bearer? Sure. Chariot? Sure. Necromancer? Sure.

If you finish your unit, can you start another one as a stretch goal for that month? You sure bloody can!
- Especially encouraged if your unit was a smaller number or a simpler hero model. But hey, gak happens in life - as I certainly know - so there's certainly no recriminations if you get one, or three or none models painted in a given month. Having said that, if you’re probably not going to participate at all, then maybe hold off on the signup.

If you finish your entire project - particularly something like a boardgame
- you can choose to chill and take a well-deserved break - or continue by painting some similar/associated models. Like more Genestealers or Terminators or Zombies or D&D Monsters.

Very Important Stuff – to reiterate:

IT DOES NOT MATTER if you've already started the army/force/project/whatever.
IT DOES NOT MATTER if you've already half-painted all of the miniatures.
IT ONLY MATTERS that you're prompted to do some painting and get stuff finished.

The objective is simply to help motivate us all to complete those many unpainted models that we have, to support each other and perhaps some constructive advice or good-natured ribbing.
It also doesn't matter if you do a unit for this project each month and then fritter the rest of your time away on completely unrelated and random models.

If you'd like to participate, just add a post here stating what game/system/army/etc you want to focus on. If you'd like to nominate your first month's target, then feel free to do so. I'll update this post over the next few days while people rejoin, join and work out what we're going to spend time painting. Please don't just post on a lark, though - it's obviously better to have people on board for the duration rather than signing up and then never being seen again. Based on that, I reserve the right to allow late entries, remove non-participants and vet participants, etc.

We now have 34 participants, so in the interest of keeping updating this thing vaguely manageable, I've closed it, barring anyone from the first challenge that I missed, etc:

I had reasonable success with my plan to paint at least one Gondor and one Undear unit per month – I managed it but sometimes I only got a single character model done for one or the other, and I found the drawback was becoming amazingly bored with both Gondor and Undead. Though I still want to finish the damned armies one day. With that in mind, and inspired by how some of the participants in the first challenge “cheated” I’m going to keep with the two units a month target, but this time it will be:
Minimum:
• 1 unit of Gondor OR Undead OR Ogres
• 1 unit of anything else from any game.

The unit rules above will still apply – a single tactical marine doesn’t count, but an apothecary does. This will also give me a chance to revisit some of my “2016 painting resolutions” where I talked about things like getting my Dark Angels tableworthy, not to mention not killing myself from boredom painting the same stuff.

I'm glad that you're starting up another round. I'd like to start this challenge with something ancient-- Citadel Melniboneans from the mid '80s.

Helbrute and chosen are 80% done, the rest is in a basic state of assembly (mostly on sprue).

I'm in, again. I'd like to just claim my entire painting pile as my pledge. But, seeing as you want a game system, I'll choose three that I currently want to get through: Infinity, Deep Wars/Shadow Sea, and Mercs: Recon. I may choose to do some Mantic in there every now and then as well, but those three are my main choices. I'm also going to place a minimum challenge of at least 1 box, or 5 blisters per month.

This is perfect timing, as I have a great six month project cooking: a rehabilitated demi-company of basic space marines. http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/60/675393.page#8708059

My main goal is going to be to complete a full squad each month, with the two Rhinos and the captain counting as the six squad.

My secondary goal is to finish my 30k, which comes down to a BaC box still on sprue, three MKI rhinos, and a MKI vindicator.

Hey Azazelx,

I'd like to join in. I have a whole bunch of stuff to do for our Tribal game. There are several different genres/cultures/periods I'd like to cover.

I have i) prehistorics/cave-wars, ii) african masai and lion warriors, iii) street gangs, iv) gladiators and v) vikings to do.

I would like to do one unit (5 figs) of short weapons, one unit of long weapons and three heroes, per month, for each of the above.

I have some stretch goals as well... I have some lasercut terrain/pieces from Knights of Dice and Dark Ops which I would like to put together and paint.

I've made a start on the neanderthals, painted a unit of short weapons and a hero (lucid eye mini's, now bought out by Warlord mini's):

I'm currently having problems with the undercoat (Army Painter black)... I'm not sure if I shook the can well enough or something, but it's coming off the figures WAY too easily. The above figures are already starting to show big chunks of metal through the paintjobs. I don't want to strip and paint them again... any suggestions as to do what to do? I'm currently thinking of slathering on some satin varnish, letting it dry really well, touching up the paintjob, and then a coat of testors dullcote to finish it off.

For the future, my friend is suggesting I should wash my metal figures in warm sopay water before undercoating... another friend (a caster) says it'll make no difference...

Definitely down. I'll be trying to finish as much fantasy wargame (KoW) orcs as the first run of the challenge.

I wanna get six (or more) units done but I'll be allowing for flex goals of skirmish forces (probably TNT) in case I need a break. This leg will have more infantry I think so I may have to push and then fall back a bit. Or work out a horde over a couple of months and post a small team from another system for the month.

The remaining 1750 points of Epic Speed freaks for my 4k list
The UCM and PHR stuff from the Dropfleet Commander Kickstarter (whenever it arrives)

I am in. The real question is what army I should work on... Nids, Brets, 30k, LotR... Considering I have a (supposedly) active blog for my 30k Raven Guard, I guess I should go with them.
My pledge will be 10 tac marines and 1 "other" each month. That will at least keep me busy until October.

First up will be 10 marines and the chaplain.

So... planning phase.

I've decided that I'm going to start off working on the figures from the Iron Kingdoms Unleashed Roleplaying Game Adventure Kit and Super Dungeon Explore: Forgotten King as my initial two games. I figure getting one "set" of fogires out of the way for each in a month is a reasonable goal.

For those who aren't aware, here's what is in each box.

Iron Kingdoms Unleashed:
Spoiler:
* 4 player characters
* 2 Razor Boars
* 4 Farrow Brigands
* 2 Slaughterhousers
* 2 named Farrow NPCs

SDE: Forgotten King:
Spoiler:
* 5 Hero models
* 6 pets
* 1 Forgotten King Dungeon Boss
* 1 Trent the Treant Mini-Boss
* 1 Bashful Boris Mini-Boss
* 2 Bramble Knight Spawning Points
* 14 Bestial Chimera monsters (which seem to be a mix of figures - split TBD)
* 2 Old-Growth Hollow Spawning Points
* 12 Kodama Forest Spirit monsters (which also seem to be a mix of figures - split also TBD)
* 6 Rabid Squirrel Creeps
* 3 Boo Booty
* 5 Treasure Chests

July is a bit of a short month for me, as I'm away for a week at the end of the month. As a result, I'm not looking to be too ambitious in the first month of this Tale. As a result, I think my initial goals will be:

IK: Unleashed - 2 Razor Boars
SDE: Forgotten King - Either the Old-Growth Hollow Spawning Points or the Trasure Chests, once I've had a better look at the Spawning Points. If I do the Treasure Chests, I'll also bundle in the one I have from a metal SDE Dwarf, and possibly the ones from my SDE 1.0 set. Pretty repetitive work in that case, but it'll bulk them out a bit.

This is the first time I've worked with the IK board game plastic, and I can see it is going to be more of a pain than the plastic kits. There are clear injection sites on the back of the bases for the Razor Boars, but attempts at cleaning them up with clippers (for the big bits) and a file don't seem to have worked. Time to break out the modelling knife, methinks...

The IK:U figures are also fairly shiny, making me suspect the presence of release agent, so they'll be getting a warm water bath before basing/undercoating. The polearms for the Slaughterhouses will need straightening out as well, and I may need to break out the Liquid Green Stuff for a couple of gaps on some of the figures.

Anyway - why am I doing the Razor Boars first? Well, this won't be the first time I've painted Razor Boars, though obviously these won't be metal. In fact, I'm now wondering if I got the heads on my metal ones the wrong way round. Fortunately, it means I've got a pretty good idea what I need to do to get these painted up - I figure I have a reasonable shot at getting the pair done in a week, once the prep work is done...

I'll put in my pledge for the coming month while I'm at it: more tanks!

On the bench right now are a pair of Leman Russ tanks, a half-done Stormsword, a new Vanquisher turret for my ace, three tank commanders and various smaller bits and bobs like banners and the like to make these boring slabs of grey armour pop a bit more.

I'm hoping to at the very least get the two Russ tanks done, along with one of the tank commanders.

I'm starting with... well, a whole lot of things that have been rudely shoved aside as I focused on Skeletons and Gondor to the exclusion of finishing other models.

I've just started working on a trio of push-for CSM in Iron Warriors colours from the Assassinorum: Execution Force boardgame. I'll try and get that first bloody Minotaurs SM squad done (4 models to go), and I've got another dozen Zombies on the go as well as another unit of a dozen Brigade Models' skeletons that I've just sprayed bone over the past few days. Along with 9 Reaper Bones Skeletons from Bones II.

Dunno how much of that I'll get done in July. I'd like to get all of it, but hopefully at least a few. I'm hoping my more eclectic approach to round 2 will keep me from getting bored as I did in the first challenge.

Well, if we're announcing our July goals, then mine is going to be Deep Wars. My goal shall be to complete at least five Dark Mariners. Basically, I'll be finishing my Dark Mariner Shadow Sea starter set, which has three of the four figures left (I finished the Cavern Crawler a long while ago) and I'll try to do two additional blisters. Should be fun painting them again, though I don't look forward to the Dagathonian.

Time to reveal the mystery project. I spent this evening working on the early stages of my new portable game board. It's 75cm by 50cm, perfect for taking a game designed for 28mm scale minis and inch based measurements and scaling down to 15mm scale or below and switching to centimetre. For example the Sharp Practice stuff I'm doing at the moment.

So here's the step by step so far, step 1:

Get a piece of MDF, I got this cut to size for free at B&Q saving me a job I'm useless at. Thanks tiny B&Q employee (seriously she was like 4 foot tall at most).

Step 2:

Stick some cork to the top, this will help deaden the noise made by rolled dice and things like that. I used spray glue (the sort you'd use for car headlining or something like that) as it's quick and easy.

Step 3:

Glue your chosen ground cover on top of the cork, I used the sort of flock covered roll normally sold to railway modellers. It's cheap stuff and it will wear out eventually, on the plus side though it's nothing that can't be fixed with some glue and flock. I used a combination of glue and staples to hold the edges on the back of the board. Looks messy but it'll keep it in place. Most of it will be covered with the edging material though.

Next step preview:

So next I will be cutting an edging material to size (need to borrow my parents mitre saw for that), staining it a nice colour and nailing it to the board.

So yeah that's my mystery project revealed.

Hi Az.

I am a bit ashamed of dropping out last time round. I had a pretty huge RL load (annual job assessment, job interview, new job and Masters dissertation) culminate in the last 3 days and I now have time to think (and more importantly hobby!).

Please feel free to tell me to get lost, but if you'll have me I wanted to have a more focused pledge for Space Hulk.

I figure it's a clever setup because I will pledge to complete the 23 Genestealers (incl Broodlord) over the six months with the remaining 225 (if I counted right) elements (door edges, termies, tile edges counter edges, door bases, dead termie, chalice and C.A.T.) that I have not finished yet counted as stretch goals.

That works out as 4 stealers a month plus whatever else I can get done.

Does that sound ok?

Ok so shamelessly switching topics for my entries... gonna switch to small squad/team/warband/unit/etc's every month. Ideally what I'll do will range from minimum:squad (3-5 minis, whatever actually makes a squad of the thing I'm doing) to maximum:faction (involving a squad or two, plus independent support figures, or possibly 10-15 loosely collected minis making up a TNT warband or Infinity force).

I want to focus on things that look at least somewhat at home in a ruined city because I've got a 4x4' board worth of battle systems coming in a month or two (or three?)

Probably work on the additional figures I've gotten for my USAriadna Ranger Force, maybe my Morats, possibly my Get Started: Tau, and so on. We'll see what I can do.

I also want to try to do at least one small-medium piece of scenery each month that either fits the theme of the group I'm doing, or that fits a secondary theme: deadzone demo kit. If I can finish 4 forge father models and get enough painted terrain for a 2x2' deadzone board, I'll have a nice compact demo kit I can lug around to show off deadzone. So any time I can't think of a suitable terrain piece for the faction I'm building...I'll just work on one for my demo kit.

Stretch goals will likely include additional scatter scenery to go with the post apoc city terrain, unaffiliated survivors, and zombies.

Wish me luck because finding time to paint is like pulling teeth right now

And I've finished the board.... well mostly anyway I need to track down some dark wood filler to get the corners looking really good and paint the brass nails brown but aside from that it's done.

So here's an overall view of the board, the 15mm minis which were my June entry for the last thread should give an idea of the size.

And a cheeky side view with the bonus of a little piece of one the otherwise useless weights (a 6th ed 40k BRB ) I used to hold everything down as the glue dried.

I reckon the total time I've spent working on this aside from waiting for stuff to dry is little more than 2 hours. I'd say that's a pretty good use of my weekend.

I guess I'd better paint some actual minis now.

Rohan
Anglo Dane (Saga 4 point starter plus extra levie troops)
Ork Nobs
Undead vikings
Dwarfs

Miniaturemarket was closed today for the holiday . Guess I'll have to pick up my birthday project tomorrow on my actual birthday. Then this months build and paint can begin. I've kind of burnt out on zombies so I need a crafting break. Plus I've been working on my gaming area which got ruined last fall when we had water in the basement and I gave up my shelving/gaming table base.

My first 8 of 12 Skeletons are done, barring the bone that I'm saving to do at work. And their shields. Unfortunately I've somehow lost my tub of shields. I spent an hour looking for it yesterday. Not bloody happy!

I've added Scarper and Huginn. And with that, we hit 34 (35 if Da Boss returns) so in the interest of keeping it manageable for me in doing the "paperwork", I'm closing participant entries - barring anyone active from the first challenge I've missed, etc.

Ok here's how July is shaping up......or should be

Front row - main event for the month. Need to get 4/5 Space Hulk figs done per month.
Second row - supporting acts - stuff that needs to be finished up but not at the expense of the main event - skitarii Dracosan, DW:O Raven guard marine, and Casket
Back row - groupies - stretch goals and maybe hopefuls - chaos sorcerer Lord, familiar and tech priest enginseer. Only get paint if main event and supporting act are totally sorted.

Fingers crossed

My Rhino, ready to be painted! And yes, that is a twin linked bolt gun from the old Land Raider crusader kit.

Now to decide on a paint scheme. I was thinking bronze with white weapons but would that look too similat to the Minotaurs?

Go for whatever you want TheCustomLime, there's a huge amount of repetition amongst the official chapter colour schemes anyway. There's at least 3 official "minotaur" chapters all with similar colours schemes, the Minotaurs, the Brazen Minotaurs and the White Minotaurs. Though admittedly you don't see the latter two that often since Forgeworld started featuring the Minotaurs in IA books

Looks like there's going to be a lot of interesting stuff this month, I can't wait to see the finished minis.

To give an idea about what I'll be working on, here is a demi company of marines, lovingly stripped, broken down, and reassembled:

The same Marines after a nice coat of white primer:

I didn't get a group shot after the Army Painter Ultramarine blue, but here's a representative squad:

And that same squad, painted up aside from decals:

For those curious, here's a group shot of the army prior to stripping:

That's fair. There's a chapter that looks almost identical to the Ultramarines all save for their chapter symbol.

Edit:

Slight project update. As it turns out, Balthasar gold does not work well as covering large, flat surfaces. So the Rhino needs to be redone. In the mean time, I'm going to paint up a Storm Talon instead for your viewing pleasure in a new paint scheme.

I am going to shift my painting focus this month to my RG contemptor. But i have a good reason rather than laziness! A recent blog has inspired me to true-scale my 30k marines. So while I'm taking a lighter load painting-wise this month, I will also be chopping up my marines' legs so that they will be ready next month.

And for those curious, the 30k blog that inspired me is linked here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/694362.page

EDIT: I've attached a picture of the dread pre-paint. Some minor conversion work and battle damage has been added.

Awesome stuff guys

Here's what I've been working on:

12 figures from Mars Attacks, 4 USAriadna grunts, primed.

Their accompanying scenery pieces, simple quonset huts, base coated.

I've just received 3 more figures for the batch and the first 16 have all gotten the first base coat. Still want to grab a few more figures to round out the force but they may have to wait and become stretchgoals for other months.

The quonset huts are gonna get doors/windows on the ends and maybe a bit or two thrown on (radio antenna or a flag denoting the building's purpose, whatever, maybe nothing extra) and then dipped and matte sealed so they aren't so shiny. I do want them to look relatively new-ish, just not that bright.

Might as well post a quick WIP photo of what I've been getting up to since completing the board last weekend.

12 15mm Seven Years War Skirmishers and an officer to lead them. I've got most of the base colours done, just faces and the little details to do (hopefully I'll get most of that done this evening) then it'll be down to tidying up, washing and basing.

And as a bit of a sneak preview of future months here's a complete army shot of everything I've got so far.

So still to come (not this month I hasten to add!) is an artillery piece, some hussars and another load of line infantry this time musketeers to provide something different to the previously completed grenadiers. Once that lot are done it'll be time to start thinking about doing another army to fight against this one.

EDIT: Those Anglo Danes are looking very good Huginn

I think I've added I dunno 7 more minis to my attempt this month? Got some in the mail and I'm converting a few old haqqislam ghulam to be 'civilian contractors' or mercs standing in for the 112 emergency doctor, dozer engineer, and wardriver hacker. I've still got a couple of unit types that don't have any models to represent them so I'm probably gonna try to convert the lone/mysterious/whatever ranger and one of my azra'il is becoming a blackjack heavy ranger.

Yeah so... still gonna try to get em all done though I'm stacking the odds against me

Work, so far, on my prehistorics range.

My Clan of the Cave Bear has a chief, two heroes and a skin-walker/shaman. The figures are from Lucid Eye, which was bought up by Warlord who now do the distribution.

The chief, skin-walker and hero up against a Cave Bear (Arcane Scenics and Models)

The rest of the warriors - one 5-man unit of long spears and one 5-man unit of clubs/axes etc.

Still hoping to finish some Mammoths before the end of the month. I'd really like some big cats - sabretooths and lions - for a scenario/mini-campaign I'd like to do based on 'the hunt'.

All around good jobs everyone . It's always good to see other projects going and new/old models that I have never run across.

While I might be working on some terrain for the league of extraordinary riveters "let it flow" competition I am still churning along with batch painting zombies. My next herd of 26 berserker inmate zombies started off primed this week (8 were primed and had some paint), but now have all zombie flesh done and green washed, as well as orange jump suits on.

They still need to get their panties painted , those prison chicks just show everything. Hair and the exoskeletal grows painted.

Also built a fountain as the base for the terrain competition and painting has begun on that as well.

As per usual I got sidetracked from my intended project.
I have been able to find a group that plays Dropzone Commander and as I never liked the look of my old UCM (they were some of my first resins and I didn't wash off the mould release agent...) I decided to repaint them. I tried out a new technique with these models. I used a white undercoat (which is something I haven't used for about 20 years) and the paint itself was heavily diluted and applied in 2-3 layers and then given 2 washes of heavily diluted flesh wash. I quite like the technique but the coverage is slightly patchy, I obviously need to work on getting a satisfactory dilution.

This is everything that I repainted.

This is everything including the medium dropships which I left as they were. This is about 1500 points (ish).

I have also decided to resurrect my old Plog and I will post more pics there.

Nice! Love the color scheme of these guys. They look natural yet somehow alien (besides the whole four-arm thing ) Mind sharing how you painted them? I'd love to give it a try for my own nids, slightly changed with some beetle-like rainbow sheen on the armor.

Nice job on the DZC. I always find painting anything below 28mm quite a weird experience. You have pulled off a nice balance of detail and overall scheme.

So, time for my end of month 1 photo (as I'm away after today):

Completed: 2 Razor Boars, 4 SDE Treasure Chests.

Not as much as I'd hoped, but getting myself in a position to start those chests was surprisingly touch - and I only started those four last night.

For next month, I'm going to be slightly more ambitious with my goals:
SDE - Remaining chests + 5 Boo Booty
IK: RPG - 4 Farrow Brigands
Misc. - Finish Garden of Morr wall segment; 6mm Fort from Leven Miniatures; Hermann's Tortoise from Oathsworn Miniatures

I won't be surprised if stuff is changed or added to that list as the month goes on, though.

Progress! Stuff for the month coming along nicely. 'Stealers finished, Deathwatch fella finished, Drac ....nearly finished, termies......coming along and Casket.....started! And Turmiel who I keep forgetting about ....is just about done - just need to make his lightning and base. Gonna get as much done as I can on these this weekend as next week is all about getting entries for competion checked over, final touched if neccesary and then photographed in time for closing date. Oh yeah....... I ordered/bought a Warhound

Wow, loads of progress guys!
Danes are looking very smart, I like the variation in the fabric colours

Just a quick post before I'm away in Cornwall for a few days. Finished my models for July:

A unit of creatures:

(Hasslefree Mawe and Lesser Mawes with a little green stuff)

And a scavenger mini

(One of the Last Heroes from Lead Adventure)

More info and a few more pictures on my blog. Please let me know what you think!

Here is my complete July pledge:

More here I have another eight Melniboneans primed and ready to start, but I doubt that I'll have time to finish them off before the end of the month.

Progress but on the wrong unit equally the last archer will be finished by the end of the month and next months unit will probably just require transfers although I've still got to design and print the sheet.......

Since it's almost August, I'd like to announce my next pledge and I'd like to add finishing up my Mechanicus to my overall goal for this challenge in addition to Mantic stuff, Deepwars, Infinity, and MERCS. So, my August pledge will be to do 1 larger Deepwars figure, an Antipode Assault Pack, and a Thallax Meltagun Cohort.

First of my Danes finished, pretty happy with them. The minis are by Saxon Miniatures, pretty simple (some might say crude) sculpts, definitely in the gaming not display category, but that's reflected in the price. The shields are a mix of transfers and hand painted. Mounted on one penny pieces (UK), which are handily magnetic.

In game terms, this is two points of a Saga force. The next two points will be the elite troops, so just 8 figures plus the warlord to complete in this little starter force. That's my objective for August, plus I want to complete some Rohan troops I have had almost finished for a few weeks.

I have good news and bad news. The bad news is that I won't have my dread done by tomorrow. The primary reason is that I didn't finish it before I left for an extended weekend vacation. However the good news is that I'll finish it up and have it posted a day or two into August. Fingers crossed

Great work everyone else. Its inspiring to see people work hard and finish things that have been on their painting desk anywhere from a few weeks to a few years.

Best of luck to those getting any last minute work in today. I set myself a rather meagre goal this month of 5 Blood Angel Tactical Marines, managed to get them done this morning:

Luckily I was able to hit a fair few stretch goals, namely:

Captain Tycho
Lord Relictor
3 Stormcast Retributors
5 Liberators
Numinous Occulum.

Spoilered shots to not take up the thread:

Spoiler:

Next month? I take on the new Shattered Dominions Realm Of Battle Board.

Just got this unit finished last night and photographed today.

An Archer Troop completing a unit coincidentally selected because it did not require shield transfers. Next months pledge is a Knight Troop and a Pole-Arm Troop both of which just require shield decals.

While I had some delays, I was able to get one full squad complete. Between having to learn how to use transfers, waiting for Micro Sol and Set, and the dealing with high humidity, I made a ton of progress on my Demi company, but only one squad is fully complete:

I'm having a blast painting these old school marines. I think the early third edition models are in a sweet spot between the character of the early stuff and the high production values of the more modern models.

Wow, great job everyone.... this is a fantastic challenge and im stoked to see what everyone can do. Work has kicked the feth out of me this month, but I did finish off the Fists drop pod. I got a airbrush and this is my first model using it. I am not happy with the yellow on it. I had a good shade of yellow but I did say good enough, I thought well I can do a little better if I just do this...and....ugh...should of just left it as it was.

This was also the first time I tried to use the sponge method for weathering. I think I over did it a little but over all I am happy with it.

My next months pledge is going to be the Inq scale Witch Hunter Tyrus... or the Inq scale Brother Capt Atrimus I have done some converting on the Artimus so...maybe we will see where this goes...

Cant wait to see what happens next month everyone

That Dracosan is just aaaaaaaaaace.

The other entries for July are looking sharp and inspiring as well, good jorb!

On my end, I've almost managed to wrap up two Leman Russ tanks and the Stormsword (just need to tidy them up and do the decals), but I've been neck-deep in work these last few weeks and the coming two weeks to come, so I'm going to try and do my best to get them done before the end of this month, which should be possible with my official week off in two weeks time.

So yesssss, on the desk right now are..

- 2x Leman Russ tank
- Stormsword super-heavy tank
- Stormlord super-heavy tank

Some great work this month!

@FabricatorGeneralMike: I like the weathering on the pod. The yellow is more greenish than I'm used to seeing for Fists, but it really pops!

@Llamahead: Those archers are fantastically dark and gritty, perfect for old school empire.

@Josh: the Melniboneans are cool, very rich color scheme on some vintage models.

Sadly the only thing I managed to complete in July was the portable board I posted a couple of pages back, the 18th century skirmishers I started were sadly not finished because real life got in the way (curse you real life!!!). So hopefully I'll find the time to polish them off over the next week or so then see what I can rustle up from the lead pile.

Ty for that... the weathering really didnt come out in the pics...it looks much heavier irl. Maybe it was the light i used but it doesnt look that green irl again.

Hey guys, I've been updating the June Showcase post now.

If anyone has posted their monthly pics and I've missed them, please LMK and link to your post with the pics (it happens).

If anyone else has finished stuff but hasn't photographed them yet, please LMK when you do. You might have to PM me when you get them up so they don't get mis-filed into August. (I myself am in this boat. Still need to spray varnish my Undead entry, let it dry, flock and then photograph.)

If anyone has additional models since the earlier post (Mana Press? Throphony?) post a new one and LMK to update the June thread.

For those who posted to let us know you didn't get the month's pledge done, y̶o̶u̶ ̶s̶h̶o̶u̶l̶d̶ ̶f̶e̶e̶l̶ ̶a̶w̶f̶u̶l̶ ̶a̶s̶ ̶t̶h̶i̶s̶ ̶m̶a̶k̶e̶s̶ ̶y̶o̶u̶ ̶a̶ ̶t̶e̶r̶r̶i̶b̶l̶e̶ ̶p̶e̶r̶s̶o̶n̶ no biggie, it happens. See if you can use it as additional motivation for the coming months, like Grimdork.

For those who entered and haven't posted since, try to let us know if stuff just happened and you're still in even though you got delayed this month - which is fine. I'd rather just remove anyone who has withdrawn rather than sort through usernames that are never to be heard from again after the sign-up, which happened a bit with the last one of these.

Ryngan - That's a ton of photos - could you take a group shot and I'll link it to your post with all of the individual shots?

Okay, first few for July in brief!

@Azazelx - Really nice clean painting work! I particularly like the detail on the bolters of the minotaurs - the variation individualises them whilst still looking uniform.

@JoshinJapan - I had actually not seen the Melnibonean line before, classic Citadel I imagine? They're lovely models! I like the freehand dragon designs on your shields, and the way you've picked out the details on the helmets. Nice scheme.

@Archer - Fantastic unit! All the clashing heraldry is very characterful, and again some beautiful freehand. Have you taken the heraldry designs from historical houses, or are they your own designs? I'm seriously impressed that you knocked them out in a month!

@Barzam - More models that I've never seen, and very interesting they are! Reminds me of the Pirates of the Carribean Davy Jones crew, maybe thrown forward a few hundred years?! I really like your gribbly skin tones, and the tarnish on the copper. I enjoyed the PACman nod on the TAG!

@Thraxas - Wow, you're a prolific painter! That's a lovely shade of blue / green on the liberators, meshes really well with the gold detailing. Lovely gemwork on Tycho, and again, great tarnish on the rifle barrel.

Will comment on some others if I have time after shift

My August WIP is the rest of the demi-company:

I got most of this done in July, but only one squad fully complete, so I'm excited to put the finishing touches on these lads and get them done. Right now the two tactical and assault squads are fully painted with transfers, they just need to be dull coted, flocked, and have banners added. The Devs need yellow on the trim, blue clean up/highlighting, and then details, transfers, etc.

A friend pointed out that I painted my helmet stripes yellow, when studio Ultramarines usually have solid blue helmets. I never noticed that, but I kind of like the look, and I'm pretty sure I don't want to repaint thirty-some helmets! Any thoughts from the thread?

Work on my Razorback is...finished. Ripped through it in a day, which in reality would only be about four hours steady work. Pretty happy with the result, though I do realize the assault cannons are a bit out of sync (must have happened during the gluing process when my back was turned! Heresy!)

My final July models - which happen to be from my "Mandatory" army-building section (undead). Finished at the wire, and not photographed until this morning. Because I'm sick and have only been posting sporadically in N&R.

A trio of Reaper Bones' Bat Swarms as a Swarm Unit for KoW Undead.

Worked on in parallel, but finished later (ie, in August) are a trio of Reaper Bones Vermin/Rat Swarms - again as a Swarm Unit for KoW Undead. I'll move them to Skaven later when I have an actual, functional Skaven army.

You're a painting machine, Josh.

So far this month I've managed to do most of the prep work on the new figures for this month - need to clean up an injection site on two Brigands, and glue the front steps onto the keep, them I'm good to undercoat.

Next thing - working on some of my Perry Samurai. Have a bad back, which is slowing things down, but I'm wanting to have a Tribal game with the samurai this coming weekend so I'll have to get cracking on them. Pics soon, hopefully

Those Iron Warriors are breaking my brain...so fancy.

Awesome work lately everyone. Apologies for being so slow, but it's been killer hot lately and I just can't get myself to paint stuff. Still working on doing *something* for the second month of the challenge, just slow going.

I have anew motivation now for this tale of painters - I have a game of SH booked in for very late on 3rd September. Very very excited!!!! Exactly the same

Some more DZC from me as my Dropfleet stuff is no where to be seen.

Heavy Hazard suits. When I varnished these something odd happened and they look a bit mottled now even though they were completely dry when I sprayed them.

AA teams

Praetorians, 27th century SAS and one of the best close assault units in the game despite being armed with nothing more than SMGs.

Post by: Huginn

Great Danes - that's great banter.

Shield designs are a mix of transfers and free hand. The more complex ones are obviously the transfers, though quite a few were simple patterns too. The leader with the horse shield, that was a real bugger, could not get it to peel off and had to stick the plastic coat to the shield (this is supposed to come off). No problem, bit of superglue and it's fine, but when I painted round the edge some of the paint seeped under the transfer. So there's some extra weathering and scratches to hide this, mostly along the top. Great Scot!

My July challenge is now finished. Here are my entries:

Thallax Cohort

Dark Mariner Close Combat Biomech

Infinity Antipode Assault Pack

I've also cleared two Stretch goals, both Mantic items. As mentioned in my initial post, I would be doing the odd Mantic figures here and there.

Blaine

The Survivor

For the rest of my stretch goals, I'm going to attempt to finish as many more Mantic figures as I can. Next month though, it's going to be very Mantic heavy.

Just a PSA.
I took some photos tonight of the Obliterators I finished a couple of weeks ago, but I find that I've just got no interest in all the hassle of uploading them, writing about them or posting them. So I figure I need a break.

While I'm still painting and will very likely manage to keep up on my monthly goals for this ToG challenge, I'm really burnt out on blogging for the time being and very tired and grumpy (a large understatement) in general, so I may not post much or at all for awhile. Similarly, I'm not likely to keep up on all the P&M blogs for those of you I usually keep up on, or this thread, or even my own threads. So I probably won't be commenting or even reading them. I just don't have the energy, and my general demeanor is not great right now.

My best guess is I'll be back closer to the end of September when the weather here is a little better and I've had a chance to rest. I'll update the monthly showcase thread at that point.

Apologies, but I'll be back to P&M when I can.

A break from regiments for me this month, working on two characters. Well, first one is done, here is Gunnar Gunnarson, leader of my dwarf gunners.

And the other character, predictably maybe, is this chap. Minor alteration - removed the skull poking out of his shoulder, it's now gently resting against the rock.

Starting a personal countdown myself, one week of work to go, then three weeks of vacation in which I plan to make something of a comeback after all those weeks of inactivity due to work.

I finally completed the Devastator squad, which was the last full squad needed for my first demi-company:

I also finished the captain, who is resplendent in all of his third edition glory:

One interesting fact here is that I used the new GW gemstone technical paints, and I really liked how they look. The green gen on his chest, the eyes of the backpack eagles, and even the power nodes on the sword are all hit with one of them.

When I began my major rehabilitation project, half the vehicles were the older MK I style, and I decided that I wanted my Ultramarines to use the newer kits. Instead, I broke out my Emperor's Children Brass etch and turned them into second line vehicles for my 30k force:

Rhinos:

The original Vindicator, which has held up amazingly as a model!

I should be able to finish a Dreadnought for my Demi-company this month, and hopefully my Betrayal at Calth tactical squads.

Nice job Polonius my man! But I can't help but feel the Captains sword could do with a contrasting colours sword glow.
Equally on the subject of models with poor contrast
Sir Montalban Zombicide Survivor

Spearman Troop

Still want to get the light cavalry done.

I was going to post that blue power swords were de rigeur in 3rd edition, but looking at some old catalogs at Stuff of Legends, plenty of models had either red power weapons or, more commonly, metallic sliver power weapons. I might try a nice pure metallic.

Nice skeletons there, Azazel, especially for Bones.

Work continues on the five Boo Booty models from my two SDE sets - I may even try to get the last four treasure chests done, if I can figure out what colour I want to do the "wood" panels.

Hopefully when October rolls around I can get more Tau stuff done.

Here is my September progress. The final unit of Questing Knights and a Paladin pretty in pink. So this brings to a close to my Bretonnian army. I will shortly be posting the whole army up on my plog so feel free to stop by. For the rest of the challenge I will be focusing on the next army in my Army Challenge which is going to be my first Chaos Space Marine army: Alpha Legion.

Nice deep pink on the Paladin, Archer - too often it looks pastel or fluorescent, but that has great tone.

I think today is dedicated to metallics on the Booty, and seeing what I can do with the other set of chests.

Time to make some progress...

It is indeed a space marine power sword. Needed something that looked huge.

Not entirely sure how I will do the alphas yet. In the assembly stage.

No, it was just a silencer I put on there, it looks alright IRL but a little odd in the photo's. That's one thing im trying to work out. Stuff that looks good IRL but doesn't look good in photo's...meh ill get it eventually

Here is my Sept entry. It's a Fists Leviathan Dreadnought, I rather like the way it turned out, its not as glossy IRL it's got a nice matte finish on it.

Ty on the yellow. It's primed black, with a heavy drybrush of averland sunset then shot with thte Airbrush of Vallejo Premium airbrush 62.003 Basic Yellow, then shaded in the recesses with Vallejo game colour wash 73.200 Sepia Shade.

It wasn't the quickest and I dunno how well it will work on a fully army of Fists, but I guess we will find out next month as I am going to work on my Fists between putting together a friends Warhound Titan ( yes pics will be on my blog )

Dunno why the quote is comming out so wierd...

For October, I intend to finish up those Stealth suits, as well as paint as many Kroot as I can stand to paint. I'm gonna do the Kroot anyway as part of Paradigm's monthly challenge, so might as well put them here as well (two birds with one stone and all that). Now I have to decide what color to paint the Kroot skin. Decisions, decisions.

Here's the remaining part of my September pledge. These are the Junktown Scrappers, my Dreadball Mechanite team. The pic is bad and all of the colors are washed out to the point of not even being visible, unfortunately. But hey, it's a full team shot. If you really want to see them in all their rusted, filthy glory, check them out in my plog.

For October, I'm going to attempt to do my old Haqqislam Starter box and the Red Veil Haqqislam starter. With luck, I'll get both starters done.

Just two figures for me this month, as I switched to single figure mode. Gunnar Gunnarson to lead a unit of (surprisingly) gunners, and Vorghan the Slayer to lead my chaos retinue into action in a little campaign. True Warhammer nerds will recognise the name of the chaos dude.

Next (this) month, back to dwarfs for me, Gunnar's gunners if I can drum up some motivation.

Looks at your models...looks at mine, looks at yours again, looks and mine.....burns mine

Fantastic job on the skin tones on both models. I really love chaos but I don't like the direction of the new khorne stuff from GW, but that paint job just makes it look fantastic. I love the use of the gold/bronze and the black. The skintones, what else can I say about them other then wow...just wow.
